It's finally happening: the widely acclaimed Forza Horizon 4 is now officially being sunset for good, as per the official announcement on the game's support forum. The UK-set title will thus only be available until the end of 2024, but funnily enough, now's the b?est time to be playing it.

Indeed, as is the case with every single Forza game released in the past - all of which end up getting delisted sooner or later - Forza Horizon 4 will remain accessible to all license holders for the foreseeable future, with just a few tweaks put into place to accommodate its former live service features. It's these tweaks, in particular, that help elevate the game from the? celebration of digital artificial scarcity that it used to be up until now. Didn't expect that, did you now? Let me explain!

Forza Horizon 4 is getting delisted from Steam and Xbox
Image via Xbox

Now's the time to buy Forza Horizon 4, if you want a complete experience

Even though Forza Horizon 5 is arguably the superior product, Forza Horizon 4 comes with some wildly different vibes that are, for some players, far preferable to the hyper-upbeat Mexico theme of the newer title. FH4 is, instead, a tiny bit more grounded and comes with a stiff upper lip that precludes the sort of positivity that Playground Games banks so heavily on in FH5. It's different enough to make it interesting, is what I'm getting at. Something similar could've been said about Forza Horizon 3's take on Au?stralia, mind, and that game went the way of the dodo?? years ago, back in 2020.

For those that have been keeping track of Forza content here at Destructoid, this shouldn't come as a surprise: the franchise is knee-deep in virtually every manner of FOM??O, and not all of it is by design. The games' inevitable delistings, for example, are likely due to a wrap-up of their respective licensing deals: keeping all those licensed cars, manufacturers, and sponsors around is never indefinite.

I did promise that there was a silver?? lining to this whole business, and I aim to deliver, however. Here's the good news, from an anti-live-service point of view:

  • All owners of Forza Horizon 4 will still be able to play it, including the game's online multiplayer modes
  • The game's Festival Playlist is getting a (presumably) glamorous sendoff with Series 77, which will wrap up on August 22
  • All limited-time vehicles from Forza Horizon 4 will be re-released as permanently purchasable options either for Credits or Backstage Passes
  • Playground Games will set up a rotating selection of daily and weekly objectives you can complete to earn Backstage Passes

It's pretty conflicting, in a way. Time and again, I've complained about Forza's deeply annoying insistence on not adding virtually anything truly permanent outside of post-launch DLC. Now that a legacy title is being officially delisted, it's going to be available as a fully-featured game, with all the FOMO tactics scrapped out of it. So, I do recommend getting Forza Horizon 4 now that it's on deep sale. Doubly so, if the newer titles' FOM??O ??makes you unhappy.

What this means, in practice, is that you will be able to play and enjoy all of Forza Horizon 4's years' worth of rewards. For some, such as myself, that means finally completing our car libraries in a Pokémon-style "gotta have 'em all" obsession that's totally not bordering on problematic. For others, it's all about accessing FH4's treasure trove of community-created content. The world's your oyster, as it were. Or, in this case, a particular fantasy region ??of the UK is your oyster, but who's to complain when you can plow through a massive field of corn in a one-off legacy Ferrari model, right?

Heck, by the time you're done with FH4, its successor may be about to get delisted as well, and it too will presumably end up getting all its content permanently re-rele??ased after that happens.

Note that I'm not happy that Forza Horizon 4 is being taken off sale. After December 2024, new players simply won't be able to experience this huge, wonderful celebration of cars at all. And I don't need to tell you just how ridiculously unlikely it is that any old Forza game ends up getting re-released anytime soon. I am, however, happy that those of us who do end up jumping back into Forza Horizon 4 after it's sunset will get to?? enjoy it at its absolute best.

You better bend before I go in the first car to Mexico

Last month I had the pleasure of previewing Forza Horizon 5, the latest in the Forza spin-off series from developer Playground Games. It was my first time playing anything related to the Forza franchise, so when I referred to it as a "racing sim," many people were quick to point out how wrong that description was. Not wanting to make that mistake again should I be called on to review the full game, I spent the last month playing Forza Horizon 4 to better fam??iliarize myself with how others see the serie?s.

And yeah, I get it now. While I would argue the unique handling of each vehicle, realistic road conditions, and fine-tuning options of Horizon 4 sets it apart from pure arcade racers like, say, Cruis'n Blast, the sheer number of ?jumps I went off and hovercrafts I raced would certainly make me refrain from referring to it simply as a sim. It's more than that. It's a playground for anyone who loves to get behind the wh??eel and drive.

Playing around two dozen hours of Forza Horizon 4 certainly prepared me for what Playground Games had in store for the sequel, but it also put a spotlight on just how similar the two games are. Jumping from the UK to Mexico felt like nothing more than a palette swap at first, with the same activities I completed on the snowy hillsides outside Edinburgh showing their face here. But those feelings of been there/done that dissipated when I discovered Forza Horizon 5's secret weapon: the weather.

Forza Horizon 5 (PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series S [reviewed], Xbox Series X)
Developer: Playground Games
Publisher: Xbox Games Studios
Released: Nov. 5, 2021 (Early Access), Nov. 9, 2021
MSRP: $59.99

Forza Horizon 4 is most notable for its introduction?? of the season system to the open-??world franchise. Every week, the look and feel of its English countryside would change from winter to spring to summer to fall. It was a stunning effect as the trees and forests of the U.K. would absolutely glow with yellow autumn leaves and shine with a fresh pack of cold winter snow. Arguably, the season system in Horizon 4 was more of an ??aesthetic advancement rather ?than something that changed how you played the game. With Forza Horizon 5, the seasons are less visually stunning than the last game, but the weather e??ffects have been pumped up to the extreme??.

Playground Games has been hyping up its new local weather mechanic, and with good reason. It is, in a word, stunning and possibly a game-changer for those who've been following the series since 2012. The gist of how it works is that the weather can change on different parts of the map at different times. So while it might be bright and sunny on the sands of the Baja, over in the beautifully rendered city of Guanajuato, it could be overcast or raining in the Rivie?ra Maya. As storms move in and out, the conditions on the road can go from dry to rain-slicked while dirt paths will moisten with mud that'll cake your tires and send cars sliding if they don't adjust to the weather conditions.

My review period was limited to just the summer wet season, giving me a good glimpse at how storms can slowly move across the map and how cloud coverage and overcast skies alter the colors and light of the landscape. I live in the American Southwest, so much of what I see in my area is similar to what is found in several locations throughout the map. The skies I see in this ga??me are pretty much the same skies I see every day, which is why my jaw dropped when I saw just how eerily accurate Forza Horizon 5's depiction of changing weather conditions and the day-to-night cycle is. It is astoundingly realistic, ev?en on an Xbox Series S and even when playing in Performance Mode, which prioritizes framerate over graphics.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uMrkp32W2w

But of course, the weather isn't here solely to be admired. Its real purpose is to alter how players attack each race and challenge they find on the map. Rain-slicked and muddy roads will require a different strategy than the bone-dry pavement you'll travel on during the game's hot and dry seasons. While I was stuck with just the slick summer roads, several of?? the events I took part in gave me a proper look at how the other seasons will work and just how extreme the weather can get.

I got to race through a monstrous sandstorm, which is the big draw of the hot season, and escape the soggy jungles of Cascadas de Agua Azul during what can only be described as a monsoon. These moments highlighted the impact extreme weather events can have on driving conditions and your field of visio??n. Both of these storm types, as well as the thick fog you'll encounter in the twilight hours of the wet season, can greatly obfuscate your view, adding even more challenge and opportunities for visual splendor to the task at hand. And as muc??h fun as I had with the events the developers created, I can't wait to see how the community uses these new weather features in their creations.

It is a good thing Playground Games put so much time and effort into implementing this incredibly effective weather system because when you strip that away, there isn't much separating Forza Horizon 5 from its predecessor.

You're still competing in a wide variety of races that are divided into four categories (road, cross-country, dirt, street) and trying to score three stars in all those death-defying PR Stunts like big jumps and speed traps. There are still seasonal events and story missions to complete, online competitors to drag race, hundreds of cars to collect, several houses to buy, and Horizon Arcade activities you can enjoy. It can be overwhelming when you see just how many different activities are available at any given moment. Thankfully, the game's menus have been streamlined, making it e?asier to focus on earning the accolades that'll unlock more races and events, including the big Showcase Events.

Forza Horizon 5

Those showcase setpieces might actually be the most disappointing part of Forza Horizon 5 as they retread ideas the series has used before. You're going to race a plane, a train, and several types of automobiles, none of which feel all that original or really tap into the Mexican setting. The game's story missions do a better job at implementing this country's culture into the gameplay, even if they do so by limiting the elements of Mexico on display to those that are most easily recognized by us gringos. You'll hear a lot about familia and vochos and lucha libre ??wrestlers, all of which is delivered with the type of Spanglish your dad would use to show off to the hotel staff while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta.

Even if Forza Horizon 5's storylines and dialogue only reference a small portion of Mexican culture, I think you still get a great look at the diversity this country has on offer with its all-encompassing landscape. This rendition of Mexico is huge, with deserts, farmlands, jungles, ruins, mountains, rivers, a city, towns, and brilliant beaches to explore. There is a great deal of variety to be found here, and the many events and races that dot the map do a spectacular job of making sure you see every last inch of it. Also doing a good job of making sure you see as much of the map as you can is the navigation system, which will routinely recommend a slow, winding route to your destination rather than what is the quickest ??option. I mean, there is a highway that runs east to west through most of the ??map, yet the nav system seems to think I should always be taking my Apollo Intensa Emozione on the backroads of an agave field.

While I didn't care to try and operate my Apollo or Bugatti or any of the other vehicles I own that are classified as "Track Toys" on the backroads, the lack of barriers throughout the map—combined with the abundance of d?irt and muddy paths—kept me behind the wheel of my off-road vehicles more often than those made for street racing.

In Forza Horizon 4, I felt compelled to stay on the pavement as much as I could with all the cobblestone fences that lined the streets, almost as if they were a visual-mental restraint on how I should be going about exploring the world. Remove most of that fencing, and you have a game that rewards you for breaking off th??e beaten path. It's freeing to know that I can get behind the wheel of my GMC Jimmy and attempt to drive straight up the ?side of a mountain, and no matter what happens, I still make some sort of progress, either by gaining XP for myself or unlocking new features for that vehicle.

Forza Horizon screenshot

Any issues I found with Forza Horizon 5 are minimal at best. The game does have a nasty habit of vanishing NPC cars from the road or fre??ezing them in place, and the nav system, as mentioned before, can be pretty lousy. I mean, it once sent me careening through an outdoor dining space like an old man whose family desperately needs to take away his license.

I spent most of my review session playing in Graphics Mode on Xbox Series S, which locks the frame rate at 30fps and features a minimal amount of pop-in when ?compared to Performance Mode. That mode runs at a nearly silky-smooth 60fps, but ?the pop-in is abundant, and depending on what you're doing, can be very distracting. I actually had to use the rewind feature in one of my races after the shadow of an evergreen tree suddenly appeared on the road as I was driving over it, completely throwing off my concentration.

It would be foolish of me to say that Forza Horizon 5 is the best game in the? series given my very limited knowledge of its history. However, I can say with confidence this is the most fun I've had with a racing game that doesn't involve a plumber and a princes?s. There is just so much to do and so much to see that I can easily lose hours of my day exploring all it has to offer. And with continued support from the developers and community, I'll have no reason to stop playing anytime soon.

Viva México

The opening moments of Forza Horizon 5 are like something out of a Fast & Furious heist. Arriving in the sunny stretches of this microcosmic Mexico, vehicles are dropped out of a cargo jet, parachuting down to the ground to make their grand entrance to the big Horizon festival. It’s meant a be a grand spectacle to kick ?off the festivities, but it’s also a showcase of the types of environments and roads you’ll experienc??e in the latest from Playground Games.

In just the first eight minutes, I barrel down a snowcapped volcano in the new Ford Bronco, drive straight into a sandstorm in a Corvette Stingray Coupe, navigate a rain-soaked jungle in an off-road Porsche, and fly by the sunny sands of Baja California in a Mercedes AMG-1. All in less time than it takes me to make my morning cup of tea. As somebody trying out the Forza series for ?the first time, it’s a hell of an opening that’s really forcing me to look at racing sims in ?a new light.

Admittedly, I’ve never been one for the genre. I am not a car person, neither in gaming nor in real life. For the longest time, I didn’t particularly enjoy driving. I’ve always owned commuter cars, so the call of the open road never spoke to me. Even when I’d meet people who were really into cars, I’d just mindlessly nod along as they talked about installing new brake systems or valves that do whatever it is valves do for a vehicle’s engine. As for racing games, I’ve mostly stuck with the karting variety, occasionally dipping my toe??s into more authentic experiences with Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2, Need for Speed: Most Wanted on the Wii U, and Burnout Paradise ?on Switch. They’re all games I can appreciate but not necessarily find myself? obsessed with.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=YY2GX_7wR7Y

Truth be told, it’s too early to tell if this will be the title to do the trick, but I do know the opportunity is there as my attitude toward driving has shifted over the last year or so. I live in an area with a lot of bumpy dirt roads now. They’re the type of roads I’d never take in my old Chevy Cobalt, but with my Subaru Crosstrek, I’ve begun to appreciate the experience of an off-road jaunt. And I think that newly found appreciation of the driving experience carried over to the fake cars I tested during my preview week with Forza Horizon 5.

For the preview, I was given access to just a small slice of the game’s campaign and the entirety of the open world with its 11 different biomes. Following the spectacular opening, I ??got to m?eet some of the people who’d be joining me on my journey. My character is apparently returning from Forza Horizon 4, as my cohorts and I all carry British accents. As for the locals, they speak with that type of Hollywood Spanglish that only uses the most common Spanish w??ords and phrases so ??we gringos don’t get lost.

After creating my character allowing me to choose their nickname, style, and pronoun I set off on my first race against the plane from the opening that dropped me into the festival. Right out the gate, I have three vehicles at my disposal Ford Bronco, Corvette Stingray Coupe, and a Toyota GR Supra and I'm awarded a fourth vehicle following this first race. Like the opening, the race is epic and intricate in its execution, reaching dizzy speeds as I wind my way through the streets of a sprawling city chasing af??ter a plane and two dirt bike racers. It’s the type of adrenaline-pumping action I would experience a lot over the preview week.

Forza Horizon 5 preview

For the sma??ll sliver of campaign available to me, I got a look at some of the different races and events I’ll be attempting to complete in the final game. There is a nice mix o?f short, lapped races and long cross-country treks. The game is very welcoming of players of all skill levels as it lets me set the difficulty for any race I participate in. I also got a chance to experience two adventure missions that are more character-driven. In one, I help a photographer grab a bitchinshot of my car in action during a sandstorm. In the other, I help a local locate an old vocho. While neither are all that interesting, they are decent showcases for the types of cars you’ll be able to unlock in the game and just how varied and detailed this recreation of Mexico is.

Like ??with any open-world game, the biggest draw for me in Forza Horizon 5 is the potential for exploration. I love nothing more than setting out on my own and seeing what interesting sights and sounds I can find. And this map is ripe for exploration. There are old churches to discover, abandoned airports, Mayan ruins that the game respectfully won’t let you drive up and down, and so many more little points of interest. You can just pick a point on the map and the navig?ation system will show you the way.

It’s quite the trip to go from the white sands of the sunny beaches to the deep jungles of the rainforest in only a matter of minutes, but with this miniaturized version of Mexico, you can do just that. And ?it truly is drop-dead gorgeous at times. Even something as unexceptional as a f??ield of corn or agave is just gorgeous to look at. Racing games have arguably always been the best-looking video game genre, and Forza Horizon 5 is just more evidence of that fact. Not only is this world beautifully designed, but it’s jammed with small technological achievements that just make the game shine, like the way it reflects your surroundings on the hood of your car or how the wet season casts a believable ?dewy sheen over the environment.

Forza Horizon 5 screenshot

The wet summer season was only made available to me in the back half of the week, and it really highlighted the difference in the vehicleshandling when compared to the dryer spring season. I unlocked around 10 cars in total throughout the preview, which was enough to showcase how differently the cars of this game wi??ll handle. The Stingray Coupe ended up being my favorite of the bunch, but that’s probably because it was the fastest car I owned that was available from the start. The 0s Dodge Charger I unlocked on Friday did not handle those wet roads so well. Or, at the very least, I didn’t handle them so well when driving it. But it sure did look beautiful in action.

Like with most AAA titles these days, Forza Horizon 5 will let players choose between a performance mode or graphics mode on the Xbox Series of consoles. For the Series X, both modes output in 4K with the graphics mode having a maximum frame rate of 30 while performance mode bumps this up to 60 with some adjustments to the graphics settings. On the Series S, the frame rates for the modes are identical to what’s found on the Series X, but the resolution maxes out at 1080p. If you?’re playing on an Xbox One X, you’ll be able to output in 4K but at a max of 30 fps. Weaker last-gen consoles max out at 30 fps and 1080p. With exception to the original model Xbox, all consoles support HDR and raytracing is available in t??he ForzaVista mode when playing in graphics mode on a Series console.

Forza Horizon 5 screenshot

That’s a lot to get out, but from my experience with the Series S, the most noticeable difference for me wasn’t the frame rate, but rather how capable each mode was at rendering the objects on the screen as I shot through each area. As you may be able to predict, the graphics mode handled rendering at this speed with far greater precision than the performance mode. The latter had a lot of very not??iceable pop-in of the small shrubs and bushes that line the desert highways. Playing in performance mode ultimately felt like I was playing on last-gen hardware, so after a brief flirtation with it, I went crawling back to the greener pastures of graphics mode.

Obviously, this preview is only a soupçon of what is in store for the final product. A lot of it simply wasn't unlocked and the big open world wasn't connected to any other drivers, so I was testing out the offline version of the game. The much hullabalooed emergent weather system also didn't creep up in my preview outside of the two scripted sandstorms. But outside of that, this was a pretty fantastic preview. Forza Horizon 5 makes a?? great first impression, and I can’t wait to see what else I’ll see at this festival south of the borde??r.

Forza Horizon 5 releases on November 9 for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and ??PC. It will la??unch day one on Xbox Game Pass.

Playground Games' crowd-favorite racing series Forza Horizon is coming to Steam. The studio is collaborating with Sumo Digital to bring the latest entry, Forza Horizon 4, to Steam on March 9, 2021.

If you've held off with the Windows 10 version, there you go. The Steam edition of Forza Horizon 4 will have cross-play, so Xbox ??One, Windows 10, and even Android players (using the c??loud) can compete.

For those of you who don't closely follow the series but might be inclined to change your ways with this news, Forza Horizon 4 is the one in Britain that leans into shifting seasons. As our dear friend Brett said in his review at the time, "winter can be a pain in the ass and not nearly as enjoyable as the other three seasons," but it's the "only season that feels truly unique and actually affects the way?? driving works."

DLC like the Hot Wheels Legends Car Pack and expansions like Fortune Island and LEGO Speed Champions will be sold ??separately on Steam, but that's business as usual. I wasn'??t expecting otherwise.

Technically the game's first Polish car

[Update: It'll be available t?omorrow, seemingly for everyone who ?plays the game.]

Forza Horizon players can rip around England with some futuristic flair. CD Projekt and Playground Games have collaborated to make the Cyberpunk 2077 car playable in Forza Horizon 4.

Judging by the naming convention from Forza Horizon 4's car tiles, its make is "2058 Quadra" and its model is "Cyberpunk 2077 Quadra." That's just specific stuff. Everyone knows it as "The Cyberpunk car." It probably has a V-Tech. Get it? V-Tech.

Here's what it looks like, courtesy of user acreamymeme on reddit:

Technically the Quadra isn't available yet. It's supposed to be some sort of Game Awards surprise planned for tomorrow and Playground Games is denying it with a wink, the way companies do when their secrets have been spoiled. It's unclear who will get the Quadra. It might be everyone, it might be Cyberpunk buyers, it might be a reward for some ??sort of season??al challenge.

However, the Quadra is totally available right now. It was accidentally implemented early as part of yesterday's Super7 update. Players can use the Quadra while going through the Super7 challenge mode, but not in the larger game. That'll have to wait until tom??orrow (or whenever it's officially added).

Probably no huge rush, though. Everyone will be too busy playing Cyberpunk tomorrow to take time to cruise the Cyberpunk car up and down the lef??thand side of the road.

Super7

Forza Horizon 4 is one of the best Xbox games in years and it just keeps getting better. Playground Games has supported it far beyond the treatment these games usually get -- that might be a pleasant byproduct of being an Xbox Game Pass standout -- with a couple major expansions, a free battle royale mode, a bunch of big title updates, and weekly content upda?t?es.

Tomorrow, it gets a little wackier and a lot more dangerous. Forza Horizon 4 will receiv??e a new game mode called Super7 that places floating out-of-place ramps all over England. Check out the trailer above to get an idea?? of how it looks.

Here's the description from the Forza forums: Introducing the Horizon Super7, an all-new game mode that celebrates community-created challenges. Create individual challenges based on drift, speed, air, and more. Then, when choosing to play Super7, seven randomly selected challenges appear, with each being a total surprise. If you can win all seven challenges in a row, you'll get your hands on an exclusive reward. You'll be able to enhance your challenges with Blueprint Builder, a first in Forza history, that lets you place stunts, structures, and scen???ery in your challenge -- whatever you want, wherever you want."

So, it's part stunt extravaganza a?nd part level editor. And part infuriating randomness when you need to knock out seven challenges consecutively with no way to practice them. It's?? also worth noting that this isn't a PvP mode. Super7 seems to be strictly singleplayer (aside from the fact that you're playing other people's creations). You don't need to compete with other players while trying to knock out these stunts.

It all arrives December 8 as part of a free update. Playground gets a little closer to its vision of turning England into an amu??sement park.

Mach my day

The essence of a lot of the Forza Horizon experience is "Go fast, go as fast as possible." That's not always true for racing and its strategic braking and positioning. But, for speed traps, stunt jumps, drag races, etc? Yep, j?ust go really fast.

Reddit user CarBoy0001 has figured out how to go faster than anyone else, making him the de facto best Forza Horizon 4 player of all-time. Making use of the ga?me's constantly-running train, he positioned his car on the tracks while wedged against a brick wall. When the train hits him, the physics sort of pinch him against the corner of the wall, sending the car instantly flying and nearly hitting 700KPH. That's about 430MPH,? I did the maths for the Americans.

Check out the clip below. (Sorry, you have to? click through. There's no way to ?properly embed reddit clips.)

I knew the glitch was g?onna be wild but not this much from r/ForzaHorizon

Land vehicles can go a lot faster than that though. The sound barrier is broken when something reaches Mach 1, which is achieved at 767MPH. CarBoy0001 falls well short of that. On a related note, give us some Thrust SSC DLC, please. That's the cheat code? for winning all the dra??g races.

Microsoft's taking it Outback behind the shed

Forza Horizon 3 is not long for this world. We're quickly approaching the four-year anniversary since it launched, and that's probably when it'll run out of gas -- at least for new buy?ers.

Microsoft is delisting Forza Horizon 3 sometime in the near future, probably around or on September 27. It's formally called "End of Life," indicating that no one will be able to buy Forza Horizon 3 or any of its DLC. However, multiplayer and online services will still be ??acc??essible, meaning that Microsoft isn't pulling the plug on the servers.

This is an annual story in some form. Last year, Forza Motorsport 6's imminent delisting was announced when approaching the game's fourth year on the market. In 2018, it was the same with Forza Horizon 2. Microsoft works out four-year licensing deals for t??he cars and/or music in these games, and they have to be delisted when those licensing rights expire?.

So, while Forza Horizon 3 takes its victory lap, anyone who doesn't yet have it can pick it up for cheap. It's on sale right now with the base game going for $9.89, the expansion pass going for $10.49 (includes the Blizzard Mountain and Hot Wheels add-ons), and the Ultimate Edition is $20.99 (which includes the car pass and VIP perks but doesn't include the expansions).

Although, you might want to press your luck and wait just a bit. Forza Horizon 2 was included as a Game with Gold freebie right before it was delisted. With no more money to make, why not just give it away and call it a good get for the month? However, that might not be what happens with Forza Horizon 3 because it has to be pulled before September ends. It can't quite fit into the month-long giveaway any??more, so maybe it's not destined to be in the Game with Gold lineup.

I'd like to use this as one last opportunity to remember the time I advo?cated running over crocodiles in?? your Lamborghini. I stand by my words from four years ago.

Lexus and Scion too

As it turns out, a driver's license isn't the most important license when you're making a racing game. The licenses with all the individual car manufacturers to represent them in-game is far more important. When Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 4 launched?, Toyota was conspicuously missing. It was a glaring omission because Toyota has some of?? the more iconic street racing cars.

The reason for the absence is because Gran Turismo Sport inked an exclusive deal for the rights to Toyota's cars. That agreement appears to have expired because Playground Games  has just announced that Toyota is returning to Forza in December.

During today's Forza Monthly developer stream, it was revealed that Toyota, Lexus, and Scion are all coming back to Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport. They're sticking around too. The d??evelopers say this trio is back "for years to come."

It's starting with an absolute legend. As part of the Series 17 update on December 12, the 1998 Toyota Supra RZ is being added to Forza Horizon 4. The fourth generation Supra is ridiculously beloved because of its big inline-six twin-turbo engine; its ability to be tuned to a stupid amount of horsepower; and its relatively cheap pricetag, with new ones hovering around the $40,000 mark. The Supras from the 90s looked cool, were fast as hell, were well-built, and were affordable. Their legend doesn't wane either, as a 1994 Supra sold for more than $170,000 at auction earlier this year.

It's an exciting day for the Forza&n??bsp;diehards. Soon enough, some of the most recognizable and admired street racin?g vehicles will again be represented in the best street racing game. And it's going to stay that way for the foreseeable future.

Delist her? I hardly knew her!

[Thanks to user Rabite for the tip]

Forza Horizon 3 will be releasing next week and the original Forza Horizon was recently added to Xbo?x One backward compatibility. Everything seems to be going swell for the spin-off series. There comes a time, though, when we need to part ways; it looks like Turn 10 has decided to put the forerunner out to pasture.

As noted in the Forza Hub, Forza Horizon will be getting delisted from the Xbox Live Marketplace soon. This includes the digital sale of the game and all of its expansions. If you have any interest in getting a digital version of this title, you have until Oct??ober 20 to grab it.

Horizon was featured in this month's Games with Gold promotion, though its time in the spotlight ended a few weeks ago. This isn't as dramatic a case as with Castle of Illusion, but I find it so strange how Microsoft works to add a game to backward compatibility a??nd then stops selling the titl??e.

New challenges for every car added

The free "1000 Club" DLC is live today for Forza Horizon. Essentially, it's a challenge mode that tasks you with besting literally 1000 tasks, with every existing car in the game. There's speed tests as well as other technical challenges, and the DLC? itself comes with two cars (the RUF CTR2 and the 1956 Ford F100).

Once downloaded, the game will suggest challenges for you based on the cars you have available. This is a pretty sweet addition if you ask me, and a decent start in offsetting the offensively priced $49.99 Season Pass.

March Meguiar's Car Pack launching March 5

The amount of DLC for Forza Horizon is really beginning to mount up. I mean, Turn 10 Studios hasn't quite reached Forza 4's level yet??, but it's certainly getting there; and thanks to the recently announced car pack, we're getting even closer.

The March Meguiar's Car Pack, which launches on March 5, will feature six new cars: the 2013 Audi RS4 Avant, 2013 BMW M135i, 2012 Mercedes-Benz G65 AMG, 2003 Ferrari Challenge Stra?dale, 2004 Peugeot 206 RC, and 1998 Nissan R390 -- the Nissan R390 acts as the pack's sample car and is free to download.

Those who own a Horizon Season Pass not only be able to download this for free but will also be treated with a migh??ty fine-looking exclusive bonus car, the 2010 Joss JT1. For those without a Season Pass, the car pack will cost 400 Microsoft Points.

You know I love you, Forza

While Gran Turismo 5 is showing off with their day-after announcement DLC for the awesome looking 2014 Corvette Stingray (see above story), Forza Horizon announces that they'll have a... Civic?

Not hatin'. I'm a huge Honda fan, actually, and the Honda Civ?ic is a fine vehicle. The new 2013 Civic Si Coupe is no slouch, though the original 1986 Civic Si is closer to one.  More my speed, the Honda Performance Development B-Spec Rally Fit is also included up the upcoming Honda Challenge car pack. You'll get all three.

The best part is that this car pack will be free for Xbox LIVE members, thanks to Honda ?and Microsoft. It will be available for download on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

Read on below for detail??s on how to win a Civic-themed Xbox 360.

A challenge contest has players can racing virtually against Honda IndyCar driver Scott Dixon, trying to beat his time in a 2013 Civic Si??. The winne??r of this contest gets to meet him in person and receive a custom Civic Si-themed Xbox 360.

If you're not the best racer,  a photo contest will launch in Forza Horizon looking for the best in-game photo of the 201??3 Civic Si. The best photo will be featured on Honda's various sites and outlets, and the winners of the contest will receive a custom Civic Si-themed Xbox 360.

Turn 10 and Microsoft have worked it out so that you can welcome the new year with six new cars for Forza Horizon with their Recaro car pack. In this pack, which launches on Jan. 1, 2013, you'll get a 2012 Cadillac Escalade ESV, a sexy 2012 Logus Exige?? Oh??, and a 1983 GMC Vandura G-1500, a.k.a. child abductor van, as shown above. Hi?de your kids.

Dan Greenawalt of Turn 10 discusses Forza's change of gears

The Forza Motorsport series is known for its dedication to realistic physics and simulation-style race driving. Forza Horizon, released this week to Xbox 360, represents a considerable departure from the formula established by the first four entries to the franchise. Featuring an open world with hundreds of miles of road to explore and race upon, and challenges which measure style as well as speed, it's markedly different but still undeniably Forza.

Turn 10 wanted to do more than make another game about racing, fun as that can be. Their goal was to create a game which was about the fun and freedom of driving cars; A game that would, in the words of Creative Directo??r Dan Greenawalt, "turn gamers into car lovers and car lovers into gamers."

Simulation was a means to this end, but it's certainly not the only path. Horizon is built on the same physics as Forza, but the motivation is different. In traditional Forza, the goal is to shave seconds off your time, while Horizon's focus is a?bout the experience of driving the car as an exercise in enjoyment, bringing together music and driving, to create a road trip atmosphere.

"Motorsport has a set candor," said Greenawalt in a recent conversation with Destructoid. "We have some very big ticket features which are expected for the genre. We prided ourselves on doing a lot of innovation in [Forza 4] because we established some of those core features. Horizon had no ?expectations.

"We needed to develop a vision and features which fulfill that vision," he continued. "We went to the [Playground Games] guys hoping that would bring new things to the franchise. The concept they brought was 'summer?? music festival,' which lead to the open road, and building relationships with cars."

Centering the game around the fictional Horizon Summer Festival provided ample opportunities to get creative. Drawing inspiration from open-world titles such as Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed, the environment (based primarily on the US state of Colorado) is designed to evoke a sense that there's a new adventure ?around every corner and give freedom to the player to explore that.

It's not just the roads which offer opportunities for fun, but the spaces in between also, particularly when combined with the variety of modes found in the Playground Games. "Parts of the world have guard rails, but there are lots of open areas and when those are the arenas for playing these modes, it's a totally different feel to [Forza 4]," Greenawalt remarked. ?"We do that all the time here in the studio where we're playing 'Cat-and-Mouse.' I think players are going to respond really well to that."

Social engagement was clearly a focus, as well, and Greenawalt anticipates that Horizon's Facebook integration and photo sharing features will be a big hit within the game's community in the coming months as players begin flooding their networks with pics of their ??sweet digital rides.

??Turn 10 is hoping that the concept of the Horizon Summer Festival instills in players the i??dea they are on an journey centered around the joy of driving. It's all digital

We've popped open a copy of the Forza Horizon Limited Collector's Edition so that you c??an peek inside for yourself. While the casing is nice (a steelbook and slip case), the innards of this package aren't much to look at as all the goods are digital.

With each Limited Ed. you'll get a shiny ticket with three codes that unlocks a VIP membersh?ip and accompanying car pack, a day 1 add-on pack, 5 more car pack liveries, and an accelerator token pack that will give access to new cars, maps and other goodies. So there's a sh*tton of content that comes with this $79.99 editio?n, though it doesn't look like much in the unboxing video.

Forza Horizon is in stores now.

Forza Horizon is available today

The latest behind-the-scenes look at Forza Horizon digs into the festival atmosphere that the game is centered around. It's fireworks, lasers, dubstep, and bros, which may be right up your alley, or not at all. It didn't fit my tastes exactly, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the game.

In related news, the Forza Horizon demo crossed the one million download mark. Those that?? download and play the demo will get a 2013 SRT Viper GTS in the full game. And that full game is available today.

Are you picking up Forza Horizon today?

With co-driver calls and everything

Upon seeing the price of Forza Horizon's season pass, you had to know that a bunch of post-release content was planned. One of the more appealing packs -- as someone who has not yet played the game, but likes going off-road -- is the Rally expansion.

The Forza Horizon Rally Expansion Pack isn't inexpensive at 1600 Microsoft Points, but the promise of driving rally cars in Colorado is an enticing one. New cars, events, Achievements, and co-drive?r calls are all that's been teased so far.

We'll hear more leading up to the December 18 release date. If you are looking to get the season pas?s, know that this rally content will?? be included.

A new kind of Forza

I've been trying to peg Forza Horizon since its announcement earlier this year, but Turn 10 and Playground Game?s never gave it to us straight. Is it more of a racing sim? Or a casual, a??rcade-style thing? Somewhere in-between?

Now that I've spent some quality time with the game, I can give it to you straight. Forza Horizon is an open-road (like open-world for cars) racing playground. It takes the Forza Motorsport engine and physics and plugs it into something more casual, and way less serious. Imagine a Forza game with a? story and dialogue and a dubstep radio statio?n. Weird, right?

But it works. As a guy who pr??efers his racing games to be of the simulation variety, this game took a bit of getting used to. But now, I can't put it down.

Forza Horizon (Xbox 360)
Developer: Playground Games
Publisher: Microsoft Studios / Turn 10
Release: October 23, 2012
MSRP: $59.99

Set under the clear, open skies of Colorado, Forza Horizon has you playing as an up-and-comer attending the Horizon racing festival. The game is structured to work as an open-world racing sandbox, but it opens with a sort of storyline, complete with characters, dialogue, introductions, and other things you'd never expect to see in a Forza game.

This festival is a celebration of car culture and and all that comes with it, including music, modification, and street racing. Imagine an oasis of thumping beats, colored tents and lights, partying attendees, and at night, fireworks. It's very festive, and serves to bring some excitement to the world of Forza Motorsport, which has always felt a bit sterile to me.

The heart of the festival serves as the game's main hub, where you'll go to get race assignments, peruse your garage, buy and upgrade cars, and enter car clubs. From there you'll drive around in this open world to race locations, where you'll meet up with others for official events. Winning brings about money, experience, new cars, and respect. You'll use these to rank higher, earning wristb?ands that get you into even bigger race??s, eventually working up to taking on the best of the best at Horizon.

The very first race puts you up against others on the open road to get the last open-entry tickets to the festival. Once you're officially entered, you're mostly on your own, free to race and explore as you wish. A world map lets you select desired race locations to call forth a waypoint, but you'll have to get in your car and drive the full distance, traffic and all. A GPS and guidelines will guide you to the location, and you'll need these, as th?e world is quite large.

This is a big change from those that expect to select a race from a menu and magically be teleported to its location. As an impatient gamer that just wants to get into the next race, I found this frustrating a?t first. But? that was before I learned to love the open road.

Half the charm of Forza Horizon is the open road, though it took me getting over thinking of the point-to-point travel time as a burden to appreciate this. The game is structured so that everything you do in this car lover's sandbox is eventually rewarded. You start out at the very bottom of the festival's ranking, in 250th place. But by doing things like speeding, drifting, blowing through speed traps, or catching air, you'll earn experience t?hat gradually takes you up through the ranks.

And really, just about anything is fair game. Things like taking on other racers in time attacks are a given, but the smaller stuff is what really makes it fun. See a road sign you'd like to plow through? Destroy it and earn points. I love seeing how close I can come to a car without clipping it while passing. This also earns you points. It didn't take long before I was so wrapped up in the playground-ness of it all that I was forgetting about the offici??al race events.

The world that Playground Games created for Forza Horizon is so vast and varied that I know I'm spoiled now, and going back to a city-only or racetrack-only racer is going to ??be a downer. Everything from open freeways to tight city streets can be found among the countless miles of drivable road. Places like ranches and old mining towns are set under scenic mountains a??nd shimmering waterfalls. If real Colorado looks anything like this, I'll have to visit someday.

Forza Horizon is packed with all kinds of race events to keep you entertained. The Festival Events are free to pick from, with the only requirements being that you have the proper wristband and vehicle type. You can attack them in any order and even skip the ones you don't like. These are the races that will earn you the most experience points, which go directly toward ea??rning you the next highest wristband, which then opens up more races.

After a few official races are under y??our belt, some extra types open up to mix things up. Street Races pop up all over the map during play. They're a bit rougher, with looser rules, but they?? give you the opportunity to earn cars and cred. Expect to be rammed into walls or cut off.

Outposts are also scattered all over the map, and it's here that you can change out cars or upgrade them. These points can serve as teleport locations if you spend 10,000 credits to use them, but choosing to participate in PR Stunts can earn you discounts on that price. These stunts have you doing things like speeding, pulling off skills, or even snapping photos. The Stunts are fun, and I get that Playground Games wants players to enjoy the open world that they've created, but I don't think that players should have to pay out of their h?ard-earned credits to teleport. Is the cost supposed to be a lesson in patience or something?

Just about everything you do in Forza Horizon is compared to the existing standings of others in Rivals Mode. After most races, you'll be prompted with the option to go up against the time of someone else (friends, rivals) in the Forza universe, and your results will then be added to the leaderboards. There's always someone faster, so you'll never be without the option to jump into a rivals race. I enjoyed always seeing my standing against others in the world as I raced aro??und Colorado. This served as a constant, gentle push to be a better racer.

I started out as a pretty good racer, though. This was mostly due to the fact that Forza Horizon's racing feels a lot like the Forza Motorsport games. The cars feel like Forza cars. To me this is pretty much the same approachable, great-feeling engine that powers the Motorsport games. You couldn't really call Horizon an arcade racer as you won't get far by keeping that gas pedal mushed the whole time. You have to use the brakes, and you have to at least try to negotiate corners with some sense. There might be some forgiveness padded in some places like off-road sections and corners, and there's always the many assists to switch on or off, but I approach this game's control exactly like I would playing Forza Motorsport 4, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

All of that said, I would hate for a potential player to write off Horizon's control as that of a racing sim's. The open-world setting and the nature of the road types makes this game much more forgiving than any sim. Whizzing down wide highways and speeding for long stretches feels quite a bit different than the calculated turns required on the race courses. Besides, catching air, sideswiping and plowing into stop signs is quite the opposite of simulation racing. The key takeaway here is that Horizon's racing never stops being approachable or fun.

And there's rarely a moment where it doesn't look amazing. Forza games have always looked great as far as car models were concerned, with the previous entry, Forza 4, sporting impossibly detailed interiors and exteriors. But Horizon ups the ante even further with its settings and lighting engine. I was blown away the first time I witnessed the game's transition from day to night, watching as the sun-drenched ground gave way to moonlight. Headlights took over for a bit as I overtook some country hills, but the wow moment came when I rounded the last corner toward the festiva??l, where I saw fireworks lighting up the sky. No racing game has ever looked this nice.

For as much as there is to do in single-player mode, I think most players will be drawn to multiplayer side of the game, as it makes full use of Horizon's open world. There are several different race types to set up for ei?ght-player online matches, most of which put you at one of the courses from the single player mode, with your ga??rage cars available.

I liked the free-roaming match mode more than any ??other standard racing mode. Here, all players have the entire game map available to drive around in, doing whatever they wish. Explore together, set up point-to-point races, play bumper cars -- whatever you'd like. In a couple of test sessions, I worked with seven others to try to acquire 1,000,000 credits in a challenge that required that all eight of us blast through a speed trap together with a top speed above 190 mph. We could never pull it off, but we had fun trying.

The Playground multiplayer games are also a blast. This set throws traditional racing r??ules out the window for pure craziness. Imagine darting around a golf course in a Lamborghini as the 'King,' racing to not be rammed by any of the seven other players out to get you. When they finally do hit you, they become king, and the focus turns on them as the new target. Another mode, Infected, has one car tagged as a carrier, and every car they hit also becomes infected. The goal is to drive as fast as you can to stay a survivor for as long as you can. Finally, Cat & Mouse has two teams of four working to complete a race. Each team has one slow car (the mouse) and three fast ones (cats) that are out to hinder the other team's mouse in any way p??ossible.

It's almost always racing bliss with Forza Horizon, but were a few bumps in the road. First, the loading times, while not the worst we've seen, still often felt annoyingly long. I'm sure if I tallied how long I spent looking at loading screens while playing this game, I'd have a depressing total time logged. And while the presentation and voice acting of the game's story bits are top notch, there's probably too many of these instances for a racing game. Between the cutscenes and the pre-race taunts, Horizon comes off as a very talky game, and it wasn't too long before I became tired of the constant taunts and interjections. These are both things that got in the way of what this ga??me is supposed to be about -- racing.

Forza Horizon mixes authentic racing with an open world to create a unique game that will appeal to both hardcore car freaks and casual racers. Playground Games took a humungous, beautiful world, packed it full of entertaining challenges and events, added in tons of personality and style, and built it all around the proven Forza tech,  giving racing game fans an exceptional automotive experience that they didn't even know they wanted. For as much as I love Forza Motorsport, it's going to be hard to go back after this.

If you're looking forward to checking out the latest iteration in Microsoft's racing franchise, Forza, a demo has been released on Xbox Live for Forza Horizon. The demo is set in the Colorado region of the game, and will allow players to drive in a few? different types of ??races, including a street race, and with a small smattering of the cars available in the full game.

Additionally, players who experience the demo will receive a 2013 SRT Viper GTS car to drive in-game when they fire up the full version. That full version of Forza Horizon will release October 23.

I'm actually in Phoenix right now to see Forza Horizon and I'm looking forward to it. I'm not generally one for technical racers, but I love driving fast on open roads and it s??ounds like this will allow me to do that.

Get a bonus car for playing

"Relaxed" and "laid back" are words we've used to describe Playground Games and Turn 10 Studios' Forza Horizon. That's cert??ainly the vibe I got from this launch trailer, which shows some of the nice vistas?? you'll be able to look at while racing throughout an open-world slice of Colorado.

Ahead of the October 23 launch itself, fans can check out a demo of Horizon starting October 9. Xbox Live Silver members will have to wait a week, though I'd recommend sticking around: by playing the demo and then purchasing the full game, you'll receive a free, custom 2013 SRT Viper GTS. Well, that settles it.

Microsoft, Turn 10 Studios, and Playground Games have revealed new pricing details on Forza Horizon's season pass. You'll gain access to the Forza Horizon expansion pack, six car packs (each containing six cars), the lau?nch day pack, and a bonus five exclusive vehicles for the price of 4,000 Microsoft Points, or $49.99.

That's a butt-ton of money to pay for DLC! A press release for the game says that this price represents a 17 percent overall savings over buy??ing all of the content separately.

If you've got that kind of scratch, the season pass for Forza Horizon will be available starting October 23.
