Forza Motorsport still isn't a perfect game, not by a long shot, but it is much better than it was on day one. Vehicle selection is still questionable in some respects, though things are looking up. The first order of business is new-generation NASCAR, surprising a?s it may b?e.

I was already quite fond of Update 13'?s assortment of content both new and old and a huge roster of quality-of-life updates, but Update 14 aims to properly outpace it. If you thought we have plenty of Mustangs in this game already, boy howdy has Turn 10 got news for you. Featuring the 2024 editions of NASCAR next-gen Mustang, Camaro, and Camry vehicles, Forza Motorsport is about to become the single most cutting-edge ??NASCAR racing game on the market. And, honestly, I didn't see this coming at all.

NASCAR season ramps up in Forza Motorsport's Update 14

Update 14's seasonal batch of content is the aptly titled American Thunder Tour, featuring the latest generation of high-end NASCAR stock vehicles. While oval racing certainly has its detractors, the fact of the matter is that NASCAR is a well-respected automotive event with loads of history behind it, and having it properly represented in Forza Motorsport is a massive boon. The buck doesn't stop ?at NASCAR, mind, as ??Turn 10 is pivoting Update 14 into a proper celebration of American autosport.

To get into the nitty-gritty of this new release, Week 1 of the American Thunder (??which kicks off earlier than expected, on November 6) will feature all three of the fancy new NASCAR stock cars available in the Showroom:

  • Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Next-Gen NASCAR (2024)
  • Ford Mustang Dark Horse Next-Gen NASCAR (2024)
  • Toyota Camry XSE Next-Gen NASCAR (2024)

Note, too, that you'll still be able to purchase all three of these cars via the Showroom later on! They're just going to be available at a neat little discount during Week 1 of Update 14's seasonal content. It's a lovely step away from seasonal FOMO that I enjoy greatly, and the community will?? as well.

Upon picking up the vehicles featured above, you'll be jumping into the Modern NASCAR Cup of the American Thunder Tour, which will then be followed by American Road Racing, American Le Mans, and Daytona Prototypes cups. Exciting stuff all around, if I may say so myself. Wrapping up the American Thunder Tour in tot?al will reward you with the delightful 1988 Chevrolet Beretta Trans Am #77, due to release on December 25, 2024. Very appropriate!

There's lots of other content worth discussing here, too, including the 2019 Hennesey Camaro Exorcist, which is available as the Cycled Class Series reward in Featured Multiplayer, but I'll let you discover some goodies at your own pace. Instead, I'd prefer to highlight some sorely needed improvements to the game in general. In?? Update 14, w?e're getting all of the following boons:

  • Improved track-side global reflection probes.
  • Resolved sporadic spin-outs that could happen upon hitting a curb in Mugello and certain other tracks.
  • Resolved a variety of crashes and performance problems.
  • Improved Drivatar AI pitting logic in Endurance Races and beyond.
  • Tuned Drivatar AI on oval races, including boosted trailing ability and collision handling.
  • Revamped downforce physics and the multi-car aero model.
  • Introduced rolling starts in Featured Multiplayer races.
  • Introduced NASCAR branding on the Homestead-Miami Speedway track layouts.
  • Improved Forza Race Regulation model.
  • Added Advanced Ghosting to multiplayer matches.

Certainly, it's a bummer that there's no new track available as part of Update 14 but Turn 10 has already made it clear that Update 15 will mark th??e return of the awesome Mount Panorama Circuit. Further, the update will be called "Australia Month," which is a wholly different flavor of exciting. Not much to complain about this time, I reckon.

I can't help but feel that every car aficionado might find it funny that Turn 10 has chosen the legendary Mustang as the featured vehicle of the new Drift Mode update. All cheekiness aside, Forza Motorsport is celebrating its first anniversary in a surprisingly delightful way, with ponies a?plenty.

Now, I've been quite vocal in my displeasure with how the recent Forza games have been handled. Between an annoyingly excessive reliance on FOMO and a dearth of permanent, non-timed content, it wasn't looking good earlier this year. Yet, Turn 10 has managed to turn things around and I'm now happy to say that Forza Motorsport is in a reasonably good spot. Its anniversary celebration, specifically, will be ??all about custom-built Mustangs and drifting, and I'm hard-pressed to imagine a better coinciding update. Well, not really, but that's a diffe??rent can of worms.

Claim free Mustangs in Forza Motorsport and prepare for Update 13's imminent release

For all of its many, many faults, Forza Motorsport is now a fairly enjoyable game if you're not keen on Forza Horizon 5's ultra-cheery attitude. When Turn 10 announced late in August that it wo??uld return a bunch of previously sunset content and cars, introduce the long awaited Drift Mode, and a variety of ??other goodness, I was thrilled.

Now, to cap its first year of existence, Forza Motorsport has shared a whole assortment of somewhat interesting statistical trivia and (more importantly) told us what its anniversary content and Update 13 will deliver, specifically. To begin with the lovely new goodies, we're gettin?g three free new versions of the Ford Mustang:

  • Ford #25 Mustang RTR (2024)
  • Ford #88 Mustang RTR (2024)
  • Ford #130 Mustang RTR (2024)

These are technically "just" different builds of the same car, granted, but they're neat regardless. All owners of the Forza Motorsport Car Pass, Deluxe Edition, Premium Edition, or the Premium Add-Ons Bundle will also have a chance to get the 2024 Mustang Dark Horse, the reputation of which needs no explan??ation.

If?? unlocking a host of new ponies isn't your forte, though, the other big part of the Update 13 equation is, obviously, the introduction of Drift Mode. Drift Mode is a whole new category of races??/events that's going to add a load of variety to the game's meta. We'll have to wait and see how it works in practice, but I expect it to be a fairly standard, if engaging way of interacting with certain vehicles. Besides, more variety is never a bad thing.

Pl??ayers can also expect a bunch of new options for Multiplayer Races, as well as the hotly anticipated Sunset Peninsula race track. The update's rollout is going to kick off on October 14, with Turn 10 subsequently releasing more information and the patch notes. Good stuff, overall.

I'm usually the first to bemoan the modern Forza games' ridiculou??s insistence on temporarily adding new content to the game, only to yank it back out in a few weeks' time, but this time I've got better news. Turn 10 announced that Forza Motorsport is un-sunsetting its timed content.

Well, alright, it's not all timed content that's coming back to Forza Motorsport, and there are still some problems left for Turn 10 to discuss, but this is excellent news regardless, and it ought to be celebrated. In a recent blog post on Steam bearing the mysterious, initially equally ominous and promising title to "A Message to the Motorsport Community," this blog is basically all good news through-and-through. Between new tracks, the new Drift Mode, more ways to unlock timed rewards, and Builders' Cup upgrades, Forza Motorsport fans have got much to look forward to.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Turn 10 announces oodles of good news for Forza Motorsport, including the big un-sunsetting of content

To get the elephant out of the room first, the un-sunsetting of Forza Motorsport's annoyingly timed content isn't going to be comprehensive. Not yet, at least, as Turn 10 is currently only going to add select temporary cups and rewards from prior seasons to the game: "Later this year, we will add select series and rewards from previous updates as pe?rmanent additions to the Builders Cup," says the announcement, adding that "next year we??'ll be introducing a number of permanent race car-focused Tours to the Career."

Not bad, right? This builds on top of the announcement of the new Challenge Hub feature, too, which will allow players to unlock specific timed and permanent rewards in a variety of different ways. Upgrades to Builder's Cup and the Challenge Hub should help alleviate some of Motorsport's most annoying FOMO, in theory. If Turn 10 continues to upgrade Builder's Cup on a yearly(ish) basis, though, ther??e won't be much to complain about in this regard.

Be??fore the ??end of the year, Turn 10 has also promised all of the following boons:

  • Weather options for Free-Play racing (ranging from Partly Cloudy to Rain Lightning)
  • Sunset Peninsula race track, slated for Update 13 (mid-October)
  • Bathurst race track, slated for Update 15 (December)
  • a substantially improved Spectate Mode
  • Drift Mode, accompanied by Formula Drift vehicles being added to the Showroom
  • Creative Hub for vinyls, tunes, photos, replays, etc.
  • Share Codes for custom-made content

And loads more, which you can read about in the full blog post over on Steam. Should many of these features have been in the game on day one? Absolutely. Is it still good that Turn 10 is looking to continue improving Forza Motorsport for the foreseeable future, though? Absolutely. "In 2025, we? will continue to update Forza Motorsport, and as in 2024, this will include new features, bug fixes, and additional cars and tracks," says the blog.

As I mentioned earlier, there are still some problems that Turn 10 needs to deal with outside of adding more permanent content to the game. Forza Motorsport's performance and stability are still somewhat iffy on PC, to begin with, and its always-online nature leaves much to be de?sired for those of us who are on shoddy, unstable Internet. So, perhaps, the next time Turn 10 posts a "message to the Motorsport community," they might tackle these issues head-on. In the interim, kudos!

Though it's still not nearly perfect, Turn 10's Forza Motorsport has slowly but certainly shaped up into a genuinely compelling simcad?e racing game over the past year-or-so, as promised. The game is now getting its Update 11, featuring the legendary Road Atlanta track an??d a host of other goodies.

Forza Motorsport's eleventh major content update is titled: "Road to Race," due to it featuring paired-up racing duos of road vehicles squaring up with their more competitive counterparts. It's about as interesting of a seasonal theme as it gets, to be honest, and though it's still FOMO at its worst, at least Turn 10 is trying to keep things spicy. The crux of Update 11's seasonal theme will be applied on Road Atlanta, the new featured track, and I'm happy to report we're gettin??g a bevy of solid fixes and improvements, to boot.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jqlm9fO5I0I

Update 11's Road Atlanta is a lovely highlight of the quality-of-life focused patch

The campaign highlight of Update 11 is the new Road to Race event, featuring the latest Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari 458 Italia, Lamborghini Huracan,?? and Porsche 911 GT3 and their respective race car variants. Players will need to eke out wins with each of these vehicles to unlock the Aston Martin AMR Vantage GTE #97 (2018) in the end, which is a lovely prize to be sure.

For vintage car fans, though, the Aston can't hold a candle to the final reward of the Featured Open Class Tour: the Nissan Pennzoil NISMO Skyline GT-R - R33 (1998). This coveted car has been a highlight in many a different Gran Turismo titles, and it's just wonderful that we get to drive it in the new Forza Motorsport as well.

Setting the new cars aside for a little bit, those of us who have been sticking with Forza Motorsport from day one onwards can look forward ??to an impressive list of improvements to the core gameplay loop, various fixes, and quality?-of-life boons:

  • Official support for Logitech Trueforce devices
  • Livery fixes (following the matte-glossiness slider bugs introduced in recent updates)
  • Shader precompilation improvements on PCs with Nvidia GPUs
  • Dynamic position changes, race data, lap counter, and driver info panel availability in Replay Mode
  • Resolved various crashes in multiplayer
  • Introduced multi-class racing modes via the Featured Multiplayer Mode

All in all, it's a decently sized update that, while it won't shock players with how good and content-heavy it is, does improve upon Update 10's fairly unexciting offerings. A good showing, then, but as we near the first anniversary of Forza Motorsport's release, I can't help but hope that Turn 10's got something sp?ecial cooking for it. Time will tell, as per usual!

True to its promise from early this year, Forza Motorsport developer Turn 10 has been hard at work improving the game with each subsequent update, delivering some much-needed wins in this respect. The new Update 9 continues this trend with endurance events, but?? with a huge asterisk in tow.

As I myself have bemoaned time and again here at Destructoid, Forza developers are huge fa??????????????????????????ns of transient, temporary content. The introduction of proper, full-blooded endurance races that take a fair bit of time to wrap up and force the player to consider their tire compound, fuel economy, and other such items has got to be a permanent addition though, right? Well, no, because Forza Motorsport absolutely insists that all of its post-launch content has got to be time-limited. That's right: endurance racing is just a timed event in Forza Motorsport, and it will be available for the duration of Update 9, from June 12 unt??il July 24.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnrMF3CKNcM

Enjoy endurance racing in Forza Motorsport's Update 9, for about a month

Endurance racing is not everyone's cup of tea, that much should be a given, but the fact that these events are being relegated to a mere footnote on one of the pages of Forza Motorsport's post-launch support is disappointing indeed. Had Forza Motorsport simply kept around even just one half of its monthly events instead of permanently removing them from the game with each new update, it would by now have one of the biggest, most varied career modes of all modern simcade racing titles. But, here we are, with Update 9's admittedly impressive roster of endurance races coming out with a sunsetting timer attached by default.

The fact that endurance events are being done dirty in such a manner, then, does put a hefty dampener on Update 9's flagship feature: the Sebring International R?aceway track. This comes after Update 8 did not have a new race track attached to it, making the release of a legendary new raceway that much more importan??t for the game's long-term health and variety.

Update 9 also introduces some minor tweaks to the Laguna Seca and?? Nürburgring Nordschleife tracks, improving their real-wo?rld accuracy, as well as the option to disable temporal anti-aliasing on PC. The VRAM use estimator, too, has been updated to be useful, as Turn 10 is actively looking into the shift timing problem that has persisted up until now on PC.

There is one last thing that could either prove to be a big nothingburger or yet another point of contention for the community: Forza Motorsport's Update 9 is the first piece of post-launch content to come with a purchasable DLC attached to it. Notably, the game's Car Pass DLC is now done and dusted, but Turn 10 seemingly aims to continue releasing bonus vehicles as the game goes on. The new Porsche 963 Combo DLC, for example, includes the titular racing car and a Porsche racing suit for the low, low price of $4,99. Granted, you can claim this DLC at? absolutely no charge until June 19.

Note that Forza Horizon 5 has already nurtured a steady cadence of DLC-locked cars on top of its timed content structure, which can get expensive if you're out to collect all or most of them. Whereas Horizon usually nets you at least a handful of cars for $4,99, though, Motorsport's first outing of this type is far, far weaker in comparison. Interesting times ahead, for s?ure.

Forza Motorsport has been making some serious strides forward as of late, believe it or not. Between improved progression mechanics, AI, and general content, Turn 10 has been putting in work to make things better, and fixing car models is now on the doc?ket, too, believe it or not.

For those who are not in the know, and not the biggest deal in the grand scheme of things, some of the Forza games' legacy vehicle models are rather inaccurate when compared to their real-world counterparts. Gran Turismo 7, too, is way better in this regard than either of the contemporary Forza titles, and fans have ??been asking for Turn 10 and Playground Games to fix things up for quite a while now.

Now, out of the blue, Turn 10 confirmed it is working on updating its vehicle model library, with almost a dozen classics already on the docket for a fix. The downside? These updates aren't coming anytime soon, and they won't be implemented into the current Forza Motorsport, either.

//reddit.com/r/forza/comments/1cs35hw/theyre_going_to_remodel_cars/l42k4ip/

Turn 10 confirms that legacy Forza car models will be fixed... in future games

Turn 10's plans for Forza Motorsport have been to make it a long-lasting live-service game, and though the game is now substantially better than it was on day one, it seems it still won't be getting all of the team's planned tech and content upgrades after all. So far, Turn 10 has confirmed that the future Forza games will receive? updated and accurized representations of the? following vehicles:

  • BMW M3 E30 (1992)
  • Dodge Viper GTS ACR (1999)
  • Ferrari 575M Maranello (2002)
  • Ford Focus RS (2003)
  • Mazda RX-7 FD3S (1997)
  • Mitsubishi Lancer EVO VI MR (1999)
  • Nissan Silvia Spec-R S15 (2000)
  • Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 V-Spec (1993)
  • Toyota Sprinter Trueno Apex AE86 (1985)

Kudos to Redditor red_fuel for their list! It is, of course, disappointing to hear that the current live-service Forza Motorsport isn't likely to receive ?up-to-date models of these cars, but Turn 10's reasonin?g is understandable in its own right.

Notably, the team's comment explains how finding a museum-quality car they need to scan is non-trivial by default, and that's without taking into account all the licensing and technical issues that come part and parcel with the job. Heck, even the inevitable Forza Horizon 6 might not be privy to some of these up??dates, depending? on how hard it is to source some of the faulty vehicle models.

That's not to say that Forza Motorsport hasn't already made improvements in this area, ei?ther. Some car models, such as the legendary Impreza 22B, have been updated to better reflect their real-world inspirations, and this is bound to have thrilled fellow car aficionados when they discovered it:

//reddit.com/r/forza/comments/1csfs01/fh5_vs_fm8_22b/

I have bemoaned Forza's car paint shader before, so it stands to reason that I'm fairly nitpicky when it comes to real-world car representation as well. Certainly, the news that Turn 10's hard work updating all the problematic models isn't likely to be reflected in Forza Motorsport is disappointing, but I myself am happy to hear that the franchise's roster of car models will inevitably be improved a??nd iterated upon. For the time being, that's good enough!

While the majority of Forza Motorsport's post-launch content updates have included flashy new tracks and such, Update 8 foregoes anything of the sort. Instead, it's quality-of-life o'clock, and Turn 10 aims to deliver. Included are an improved racing AI, vinyl editing boons, a revision of ?safety ratings, and heaps more.

As usual, Forza Motorsport's Update 8 comes alongside a new seasonal content revision, this time focusing on vehicles that walk the knife's edge between being a full-blooded track monster and a production-tier road car. One of the most exciting new cars on the roster is the legendary Ginetta G40 Junior, to illustrate what you ought to be expecting. Oh, and lest we forget: Mobil 1 is celebrating its 50th anniversary by partnering up with Forza Motorsport for a series of themed Rivals events and more.

Forza Motorsport Update 8 is loaded with quality-of-life goodies

As promised early in 2024, Turn 10 has slowly but certainly been iterating upon the core gameplay loop of Forza Motorsport with each new update. While Update 8, specifically, isn't as transformative of an upgrade as Update 6, which totally reworked the game's ??c??aRPG systems, it is qu?ite massive when it comes to quality-of-life improvements and the general quality of gameplay.

Notably, here's just a short list of some key improvements that have made their way into Forza Motorsport with Update 8:

  • Vinyl Material Tool has been added to the livery editor, allowing you to define how matte or glossy your vinyl design will be.
  • Tire Wear Scale option for private multiplayer and free-play modes.
  • Featured Multiplayer modes' Safety Ratings have been revised, increasing the number of races taken into account from 10 to 20; also improved the matchmaking algorithm to search for a narrower range of Safety Ratings in the player pool
  • Several vehicle racing category revisions, with plenty more to come (such as a recategorization of Forza GT vehicles into dedicated spec divisions, slated for Summer)
  • Improved the Drivatar AI's propensity for unnecessary braking in situations of attempted passovers, wide turns, corner apex encounters, and straight racing scenarios.
  • Introduced the Mobil 1 partnership with an appropriate Maple Valley race track update.

For a more comprehensive list, be sure to check out Turn 10's Steam blog post, but that should give you an idea of what to expect. The Mobil 1 partnership is interesting, too, though the value of this partnership will hinge mainly on the upcoming Rival events, which Tur??n 10 is yet to explain in greater detail.

As for the new vehicles and events, here's the full list of Feat?ured Tour events running through late June:

  • May 15 - June 26: Ginetta Juniors (Spotlight: Ginetta G40 Junior)
  • May 22 - June 26: Weekend Warriors (Spotlight: 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS)
  • May 29 - June 26: Kit Caterhams (Spotlight: Caterham Superlight R500)
  • June 5 - June 26: Track Toys (Spotlight: Elemental RP1)

Completing all four of these series will not only allow you to nab their respective Spotlight cars at a low price,? but also the delightful 2019 Porsche Motorsport 935 #70. As for the latest Open Class Tour refresh, the final reward there is the BMW M1 Coupe from 2011. Not a bad offering, but a fair bit less exciting than t??he 935.

While all of the fixes, tweaks, and improvements outlined above are already available in Forza Motorsport as of May 13, the seasonal batch of Update 8 content won't be going live until May 15. From that point onwards, you've got about a month's worth of time to unlock all of the FOMO-bound rewards until Upd?ate 9 comes out, such as the aforementioned Motorsport 935.

While Forza Motorsport is trying its best to improve its tech stack, content, performance, and a variety of other aspects, Forza Horizon 5 is speeding by at lightning speed and stealing Motorsport's thunder. Almost literally this time, in fact, as Series 33 is all about motorsport.

As impressive as Forza Motorsport's Update 7 might've been on the technical side of things, it's a simple statement of fact that Forza Horizon 5's Series 33 is far more exciting in comparison. Series 33 is also known as Apex AllStars, focusing mainly on asphalt-based race cars. To support such a motorsport-heavy season, Playground Games is adding 5 new collectable cars, a race car-themed ?DLC with 7 exclusive vehicles, and 23 free new props for track builders to have fun with.

First things first, then, the most obviously exciting bit is the free unlockable vehicles that'll drop into Forza Horizon 5 throughout Apex AllStars. The?y are the following:

  • April 25: Ford #66 Racing GT Le Mans (2016)
  • May 2: Hyundai #98 Bryan Herta Autosport Elantra N (2021), Chevrolet Summit Racing Pro Stock Camaro (2013)
  • May 9: Mitsubishi #1 Sierra Enterprises Lancer Evolution Time Attack (2005)
  • May 16: Porsche #92 GT Team 911 RSR (2017)

As ever, all of the above is tied up in Forza Horizon 5's specific brand of FOMO, so if you're interested in enjoying these cars, you're only going to have a week's worth of time to permanently unlock them. It's not ideal, but I'll be the first to admit that Apex AllStars is positively loaded with some really interesting cars, and it'll be curious to see how they fit into FH5's immense roster.

The dedicated Apex AllStar??s Car Pack DLC, on the other hand, isn't leaving the game anytime soon, but you do need to purchase it with real money. It's a tad more expensive than most other Car Pack DLCs, too, at 9.99$ / 9.99/ 7.99£, and it's going live later today, on April 23. Here's what you get for your trouble (and money):

  • BMW #2 M Motorsport M8 GTE (2018)
  • Cadillac #3 Racing ATS-V.R (2015)
  • Chevrolet #3 Corvette Racing C8.R (2020)
  • Mercedes-AMG GT3 (2018)
  • Lexus #14 Vasser Sullivan RC F GT3 (2020)
  • Ferrari #62 Risi Competizione 488 GTE (2019)
  • Porsche 911 GT3R (2018)

So, while it is more expensive, the DLC also nets you a few more cars than is usual for these DLCs, so it's a give-and-take. Don't forget, either, that almost all of these cars are available in Forza Motorsport, which may be of interest to some.

Back to the free side of things, all Forza Horizon 5 players will now be able to purchase the 2024 Corvette E-Ray via the Autoshow for only 181,000 credits. This car was previously exclusive to Forza Motorsport owners, so it's go?od to see it more widely available acro??ss the board.

Gameplay-wise, Playground Games is reworking the community events to no longer have to sunset the old ones. To check them out, visit the new version of the PlayGround Editor's Choice tab in Forza Horizon 5's EventLab, which will feature a growing selection of curated ?events every week.

Following the massive improve??ments released ??as part of Update 6, Forza Motorsport's Update 7 isn't quite as monumental as that, but it's a big deal nonetheles??s. The highlights are the Brands Hatch track and a huge reduction of the game's installation footprint, cutting it down by a whopping 25 GB.

Forza Motorsport released in a questionable state in October 2023, and it wasn't until early 2024 that the developer Turn 10 came up with a plan to resolve the game's many, many problems. Now, with Update 7 rocking about, Forza Motorsport is indeed in a much healthier - albeit not perfect - state. The new update's unquestionable headliner is Brands Hatch, one of the most iconic European sporting venues of all time. Alongside Brands Hatch and the ensmallening of the game's installation, Update 7 also comes with updates to the active Forza Race Regulations, revised proximity arrows, and a variety of ??much-needed technical fixes, which means it's a ??hefty upgrade no matter how you look at it.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6KTUATmGoA

Forza Motorsport is way smaller with Update 7, but with more content

First things first, we're getting two Brands Hatch layouts at this time: the Grand Prix Circuit and the Indy layout, meaning it's going to be great both for super-fast and relatively slow vehicles, respectively. The all-new Retro Racer Tour is now available, too, in Forza Motorsport's tried-and-true FOMO format, with the featured spotlight car??s being the 1981 Ford Racing Capri Turbo by Zakspeed, the 1969 Lola T163, the 1967 Brabham BT24, and the legendary Jaguar XJR-9 #1 from 1988. It's an exciting vehicle roster, for sure.

As it's been a fair few months since the game has been out, Forza Motorsport's Car Pass is also slowly winding down, with three all-new vehicles slated to release over the next co?uple of weeks:

  • April 10: Ginetta G55 GT4 (2019)
  • April 17: Matra-Simca #146 Equipe MS650 Tour de France (1970)
  • April 24: Ligier #11 Euro international JS-P3 (2016)

It's possible that Turn 10 intends to follow in Playground Games' footsteps for future vehicle DLC. Notably, after Forza Horizon 5's Car Pass wrapped up, the game ended up receiving a bunch of relatively cheap four-car DLCs. This has not been officially confirmed by Turn 10, mind, and there are some key differences in how Horizon and Motorsport titles have been historically moneti?zed, but it's good to be ??aware of the precedent.

Turn 10 also claims it's fixed the infinite loading bug on PC that would sometimes appear when attempting to create custom livery designs for cars you didn't own. Further, Update 7 includes a PC-specific setting to tweak the audio sample rate and buffer size, which might improve CPU usage depending on how you set them up. Finally, as of Update 7, Forza Motorsport's total installation footprint has been greatly reduced on both Xbox Series and PC platfor?ms by 25 and 29 GB, ?respectively.

ASUS' ROG Ally was the first big brand Windows portable console following on the heels of Valve's Steam Deck launch. All of a sudden, handheld gaming saw a massive resurgence with devic?es that look like portable c?onsoles but wield the full power of PC gaming.

So, what games make the most of what the ROG Ally has to offer? To start, the Ally is more powerful than the Steam Deck, but that isn't the gadget's real strength. Running Windows means the ROG Ally has access to a whole host of services that the Steam Deck does??n't. So, here's our list of games capitali?zing on both the Ally's beefy hardware and software.

Starfield concept image showing a ship landed on a dusty planet.

Starfield

Starfield is among the most demanding games of 2023; it doesn't even run at 60 FPS on Microsoft's most powerful Xbo??x Series X. That came as quite a surprise s?ince 60 FPS had become an unspoken standard on the Series X up to now.

You'd be forgiven then for thinking that Starfield is? out of reach of handheld devices, but that's not the case. The ROG Ally runs the spacefaring RPG just fine at 30 FPS with the graphics turned down, equivalent to what the latest Xbox co?nsoles are limited to.

It doesn't look as good as on the Xbox, but on the Ally's much smaller screen, that's less noticeable than you'd think. Another big reason why Starfield tops our list is that the game is available ??w?ith Xbox Game Pass, which the ROG Ally can access through Windows.

Assassin's Creed Mirage

Assassin's Creed Mirage is, for some fans, a long-awaited return to the roots of the Assassin's Creed franchise. It's a traditional Assassin's Creed game based on stealth, parkour, and ??taking down templars.

It's disappointing then that the game isn't available on Steam. It's currently exclusive to Ubisoft's store, Ubisoft Connect. However, that'??s not the end of the world for ROG Ally owners. Not only c?an you install Ubisoft Connect on the Ally, but it runs magnificently to boot. I've played at a steady 60 FPS while plugged in on low settings, using 1080p with FSR mighty impressive for a AAA game on a handheld device.

Mirage is also available as part of Ubisoft's PC subscription service, Ubisoft+, giving gamers access to every new Ubisoft game on day one, as well as a libr?ary of 100+ games. If you have the subscription on your desktop PC, you can also use it on your Ally.

Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon 5

Forza Motorsport and Forza Horizon 5 share a spot on this list because?? the one you choose depends on your driving style. Are you a wannabe Lewis Hamilton who needs to hit every apex perfectly, or do you enjoy cruising around in your favorite car? Whichever one you prefer, you can't really go wrong.

I tested Forza Motorsport on the ROG Ally and got up to 60 FPS, depending on the track and conditions on medium settings, at 900p with FSR balanced. In dozens of hours of playtime, the game performed as smoothly as you'd hope a racing game would. Forza Horizon 5 is the same story, sporting smooth gamepla?y as you traverse around Mexico.

Both games are available on Xbox Game Pass, so you can try them both out to decide which you prefer if you're subscribed. The only downside to the two Forza games is the hefty download sizes that are bigger than you may think. Motorsport comes in at around 124GB, and Horizon 5 at a whopping 140 GB.

EA Sports FC 24

If you're a futbol fan, EA Sports FC 24 is probably already on your radar. As the first "FIFA" game not to bear the name, FC 24 is still the? same game that dominates sales and playtime around the world.

It's also a must-have play for the cross-section of soccer fans and Ally owners. In fact, the only way to play FC 24 on a portable PC is to do? so on a Windows one. The game won't run on the Steam Deck due to EA's anti-cheat software being Windows o??nly.

That's not a problem on the Ally, and once you're up and running, it's easy to forget you're not playing on a PS5 or desktop. FC 24 ho?lds a steady 60 FPS on the Ally and f??eels just as good to play as on beefier hardware.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor

If you're downloading the EA app, you might as well check out the best EA game of 2023, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. It's another game that really pu?shes hardware on PC, so it's not the most obvious ROG Ally-friendly.

While you'll have the best time if you're plugged in and using t?he All?y's 30w Turbo mode, it's perfectly fine unplugged and on the go. In my testing, I was able to get between 30-40 FPS at 720p, on low settings, and with FSR set to Quality.

You can lock Jedi Survivor to 30 FPS for a consistent framerate, but it is able to hover around 37-40 FPS most of the time. If?? you do want to play in a truly portable (i.e, unplugged) manner, then lock the game at 30 FPS on both 25w and 15w modes for a decent enough experience.

Once you're set up and running, you'll find that playing Jedi: Survivor on the Ally is an absolute blast. The game is available through EA's subscription service, EA Play Pro, and like with Assassin's Creed Mirage, that's plenty of time to finish.

Modern Warfare 2 Season 4 release date and information
Image via Activision

Call of Duty

Call of Duty is a game that isn't easily available on the Steam Deck due to the Battle.net service being incompatible due to the anti-cheat s??oftware it has. You can't play a??ny of the newer titles on anything but Windows on PC.

We should note right off the bat that, at the time of writing, there have been reports of ROG Ally players getting erroneously banned for playing the latest game, Modern Warfare 3. The problem is supposedly being looked into by Asus, but it's not the case for the other recent titles. Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, Modern Warfare 2, and Warzone c??an all b??e played on the Ally without falling afoul of the anti-cheat system.

In fact, those games don't just play well on the Ally. They play exceptionally well. I tested Black Ops Cold War on the handheld and was able to get an incred??ible 75-90 FPS at 1080p, low settings on the 15w performance?? mode. That's a truly impressive feat for such a big game on a handheld device.

If you have an ROG Ally and want to get your Call of Duty fix on the go, you're in for a treat. You may have to cough up for a bigger SSD, though. Black Ops Cold War is a whopping 175GB on PC, but if you're happy to only install ??multiplayer, that's a more reasonable 50GB.

Update by Elliott Gatica: Since you've had plenty of time to chew through your ??picks from our original list of seven, how about three more games to play on the ROG Ally? This rounds our best-of list to a nice, even 10, adding to the Steam Deck's growing competition with more RPGs and multiplayer challenges below.

Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3.

Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 needs no introduction as to why it should be played on more capable devices. Larian's entry to?? the series easily steals over 100 hour??s of your time, and if you don't want to be at your desk all day, why not bring that world with you on the go? A little pocket Astarion, portable sass.

Sure, you'll sacrifice some visual fidelity to land a more stable framerate during and out of combat or run it at a stable 30 FPS at 1080p. It's not a game where your best experiences relies heavil?y on a higher framerate. It's up to you whether you want to choose performance over graphics and vice versa.

Is Palworld on Xbox Game Pass?
Image via Pocketpair

Palworld

Palworld is another Xbox Game Pass game worth at least a look. With its rise in popularity, seemingly out of nowhere, it took PC gamers by surprise as its concurrent ??users on Steam skyrocketed for weeks.

Personally, since this is an action game, the higher the framerate, the better. Even if you have to sacrifice texture and asset quality a bit to get a stable 45 FPS and up, it'll be worth it. It seems that getting the game around 900p is the sweet spot to get just that. It's certainly got some performance woes, so you'll have to play around wi?th it, but thankfully developer Pocketpair has?? slowly fixed some of those since launch.

Helldivers 2 soldier standing on top of bug-like enemies

Helldivers 2

Democracy jokes aside, Helldivers 2 is another game that took the world by storm this year and it's a must-play if you like shooter games in general. Even then, it's worth giving it a go just for some of the wild community stories coming out of the online play.

There's a lot that goes on in this game that can easily tank your performance. Despite saying that action games should be at a higher framerate, you should probably sacrifice some performance for better graphical quality. You can get Helldivers 2 running at 45 FPS at best.?? Setting your Render Scale at Balanced and putting most other settings like textures and lighting at medium or low will make this a blast in handheld mode.

Transient, temporary video game content is the bane of a comp??letionist’s existence, and it just so happens that live-service titles thrive on their playersability to not access content. In Forza games, in particular, FOMO (fear of missing out) comes part and parcel, though in two meaningfully different flavors.

Banking too heavily on FOMO is, obviously, a serious concern in a video game whose core appeal is, at least to some extent, reliant specifically on one’s growing collection of cars. Making those cars come and go willy-nilly with extremely tight scheduling will, inevitab??ly, lead to some players missing out, all the while creating a system of artificial scarcity. Certainly, one could argue that a “livegame ought to have some type of exclusive timed content going in and out of rotation to make it feel genuinely different from one season to another, but it doesn’t take a brainiac to dismiss this line of thought: why is all-new content being added to a game just to effectively jank it back out after a week?

Discussing the extremely hypothetical merits of FOMO is not what we’re really interested in, thankfully. Instead, our attention falls upon one of the two ways in which Playground GamesForza Horizon 5 and Turn 10’s Forza Motorsport tackle this problem. Even though the principle of FOMO is very much the same between the two franchise entries, its execution is not, and that’s the really curious bit. Which of the two approaches to FOMO is bet??ter? Or more palatab??le, as it were? Only one way to find out.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Comparing the FOMO in Forza Horizon 5 and Forza Motorsport

I’ve bemoaned Forza Motorsport’s excessive reliance on FOMO time and again here at Destructoid, but the simple truth is that Forza Horizon 5 is every bit as bad in that regard. Worse, even, if you’re a car aficionado that can’t really keep up with Horizon’s remarkably punishing seasonal format.

Look, I get it: most players won’t see the point in appreciating the practical difference between the 2020 and 2017 versions of Nissan GT-R, as the two cars are extremely similar. Since the 2020 version has only been made available for a single week of Forza Horizon 5’s Series 5 season, however, it is desirable by default, and if? you weren’t around at the time, you don’t get to unlock, drive, and tune it.

The example of the 2020 R35 is emblematic of Forza Horizon 5’s approach to FOMO: Playground Games releases huge, meaningful batches of content at an impressively rapid pace, and then chunks of this content are taken back out for however long Playground sees fit. Every season, there are big new things coming out and a handful of exclusive, time-limited cars to chase after. And, of course, once the season wraps up, you won’t be seeing those new cars for a good long while, as they generally do not get added to the game’s car marketplace.

In comparison, the new Forza Motorsport is less FOMO-laden if you can believe that. Notably, its championships stick around for weeks at a time, and every new season only adds two or three exclusive new vehicles to chase after. Indeed: Motorsport is less punishing than Horizon if you’re a collector, and it gives you more of a shot at keeping?? up with the game.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Dealing with Forza’s reliance on temporary content

The obvious caveat to the claim made above, of course, is that Forza Motorsport’s timed events are way more meaningful than Forza Horizon 5’s timed events. Setting aside the game’s Free Play option for a little bit, Motorsport’s cups genuinely add interesting and exciting solo and multiplayer events with every new update. For example, the mid-January update - the Italian Challengers - was all about racing against Italian vehicles. It was a niche situation that spiced things up if you’re into these things. More importantly, simply sliding this bundle of events over into the game’s permanent campaign roster would’ve massively improved Motorsport’s long-term value proposition.

This, naturally, did not happen. Quite the opposite, in fact, as Turn 10 conti?nues to release batches of themed campaign-tier content that gets taken back out of the game once a new update rolls out.

Harkening back to the availability of the Free Play mode, you most definitely can race whatever you want wherever you want via this option. I’d like to argue, however, that Turn 10 wouldn’t have lost anything (except for banking on the playersfear of missing out) had it set up a permanent library of past events in Forza Motorsport’s remarkably underserved Builder’s Cup campa?ign m?ode.

Similarly, it’s a known critique of Forza Horizon 5 that the game’s baseline roster of vehicles was made up mostly of cars that weren’t new to Forza at all. The majority of new-to-Forza cars were, instead, added into the game via those aforementioned weekly challenges, so if you weren’t actively staying on top of most of its events, you were missing out on a lot as a car enthusiast.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Things aren’t set to change anytime soon for Forza

It’s a given that I’m hardly the only player annoyed by how Playground Games and Turn 10 are handling their respective Forza offshoots. For years now, players have been complaining about Forza Horizon 5’s extreme FOMO, though this doesn’t get brought up often in the more casual game discussion opportunities. Forza Motorsport, in comparison, has been getting dragged over the coals for this very same - arguably less pronounced - problem f??rom day one. How is it possible, then, that the popular discussion surrounding these two games is so wildly different?

My theory is simple: Forza Horizon 5 adds such large quantities of content on a regular basis that the sheer scope of most updates overshadows what’s temporary and transient about it. In comparison, Motorsport is more clinical and dry: you get a new tra??ck and a few new cars, with temporary events to fiddle aroun??d with, and then you’re done.

So you get to pick between two types of FOMO if you’re a Forza fan: do you prefer oodles of content coming in and out of the game on a weekly?? basis, or do you prefer a slower approach where “onlythe championships get rotated out of existence every so often? Either way, the odds are good that you won’t get to play or unlock everything either of these two games have on offer, and that’s not going to change anytime soon.

While its sister franchise is busy throwing dinosaur props into the mix for good measure, Turn 10's Forza Motorsport has been dealing with far more serious issues as of late. The game's progression system, for one, has now been totally revamped, and the community is positively thrilled abou??t the development.

As Turn 10 promised early in 2024, Forza Motorsport is due to receive some much-needed improvements over the course of the year. For some time now, we've known exactly what the developer's plan for Motorsport's questionably received car progression mechanics was, but the rework was announced a fair bit earlier than you'd think. We received a full-fledged title update in the interim, which was nice but couldn't truly come into its own with the shadow of caRPG systems looming over it. Now, though, Update 6 is rolling about, and it is a hoot.

Screenshot by Destructoid

Forza Motorsport now offers an alternative to its car progression RPG systems

While one could certainly argue that Turn 10 has compromised its core vision for Forza Motorsport's vehicle leveling feature now that the whole system can be essentially side-stepped, the community is extremely happy with the end result. Up until now, players needed to level up their cars one by one, slowly unlocking new upgrade types and a special currency to purchase them with. This whole system, it's important to keep in mind, is still present and accounted for: Turn 10 still allows you to enjoy Forza Motorsport's launch-day caRPG progression if you so desire.

The big difference, as of Update 6, lies in the fact that the upgrades are now all accessible from level 1 onwards, and you can purchase the upgrade currency for in-gam?e credits. You can expect to spend 4,500 credits on 500 Car Points, which is a very player-friendly exchange rate, all things considered.

This whole shindig results in a situation where you can finally upgrade your vehicle however you see fit from day o??ne: no more faffing about with shoddy tires and a questionable differential setup for 10ish levels, for example, which is a huge change of pace for the game.

In other related news, Update 6 does not come with an all-new track to race on. After Update 5's Nordschleife, we'll be stuck with the current track roster until Update 7 launches sometime in April. Of course, there is a full suite of temporary new solo and multiplayer events to enjoy while they're available. Turn 10 has also published this month's lists of Spotlight and Car Pass vehicles, ??their respective highlights being the Alfa Romeo 4C (2014) and Toyota 86 TRD-SE (2019). The? 86, in particular, will be accessible from March 20 onwards and should be an interesting track toy if its real-world performance is anything to go by.

Now, with one of Forza Motorsport's biggest problems resolved, Turn 10 can move on to the rest of the problems waiting for attention: race regulations and AI perfor??mance, to be specific.

Early this year, Turn 10 promised to improve Forza Motorsport in three key areas, one of which was its controversial car progression system. Less than a month later, the car progression revamp was outlined, but the studio also noted that i??t wouldn't be released until Update 6 h??its.

In the interim, we just received Forza Motorsport's Update 5, and though it has introduced the long-anticipated Nürburgring Nordschleife track, the simple fact that there's no car progression revamp makes this release feel somewhat deflating. Generally speaking however, the community response to Update 5 is broadly positive, thanks to the new track and some perform?ance improvements.

Image via Turn 10

Can Forza Motorsport's Update 5 tide players over to Update 6?

As is usually the case with Forza Motorsport's major monthly content updates, we're getting an assortment of (temporary) new events and cars to keep things interesting, with Nürburgring Nordschleife being the obvious headlining feature. The track is coming into the game in two separate layouts: Nordschleife proper and Nordschleife combined with the GP raceway. As Nürburgring is a fairly prestigious histo??rical track, it is a very important addition to the game and should keep players interested for some time.

All Car Pass owners have four? more all-new vehicles to look forward to over the course of the season:

  • February 14: Lotus Type 35 (1965)
  • February 21: Cadillac ATS-V.R #3 (2015)
  • February 28: Ford Mustang TA #98 Breathless Pro Racing (2018)
  • March 6: Audi TT RS Coupe (2020)

And, naturall??y, there's a new assortment of Spotlight Vehicle??s to choose from:

  • February 14 - 21: BMW M2 (2023)
  • February 21 - 28: Audi RS7 Sportback (2013)
  • February 28 - March 6: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG (2011)
  • March 6 - 13: Porsche 911 Turbo S (2014)

It's a reasonably e?xciting assortment of vehicles from ??many different categories, and it should make for an interesting racing season across both solo and multiplayer events, most of which are now themed after the German automotive industry.

Sadly, the shadow of Update 6 does hover over these goodies in a way. Update 6 will make it so that Forza Motorsport's car progression system is almost entirely optional, allowing players to not only choose any given car upgrade from level 1, but also to purchase the upgrade currency using earnable Credits. This change should, in theory, make Forza Motorsport much more of a pick-up-and-play sort of racing experience, as ?players won't need to grind levels for every vehicle they want to race in.

If Nürburgring Nordschleife itself and the assortment of new cars aren't enough to keep you entertained in Forza Motorsport until Update 6 hits, we'd recommend looking into the game's fascinating car colour community. If nothing else, it sho??uld make tweaking your car's looks a bit ?more interesting.

While the most topical discussions about the Forza franchise at large usually have something to do with the latest game's many fumbles and stumbles, now's the time to take a look at something different. Did you know that the Forza community?? maintains a humongous list of real-world ?car paint specifications?

Indeed, there's a small, but extremely dedicated community of Forza players that's spent hundreds, if not thousands of hours meticulously recreating real-world car paint swatches for virtual use. It's widely accepted that Gran Turismo generally offers a more pleasing and accurate car paint shader, and the fact of the matter is that some of the default manufacturer paints simply don't match up to their real-world inspiration. These issues have been around since Forza Horizon 4, at least, which is when this community of car paint enthusiasts kicked off their long-lasting project.

Screenshot by Destructoid

The massive car manufacturer color spreadsheet for Forza games

Setting aside the incredibly impressive car paint recreation of Gran Turismo 7, it's a given that many - if not most - players simply won't care enough about the difference between Ferrari Red and generic red glossy paint. Yet, the issue of correctly replicating the complexity of car paint is a problem for high-tier racing games, and the Forza community decided enough was enough by the time Forza Horizon 4 ??came out. The prob??lem, at the time, was twofold:

  • Video games struggle to accurately replicate real-world car paint
  • Forza games, in particular, don't always do the finest job of recreating certain paint swatches

Obviously, there was nothing that players themselves could do about the first part of the problem. As for the second, though... that's where the incredibly impressive Forza Colour Sheet document comes into the picture.

Featuring a grand total of 10,902 unique real-world paint swatches (as of February 12, 2024) taken from manufacturer libraries, third-par??ty ve??hicle modders, and various other companies, this document is a testament to one dedicated community's plight against car paint inaccuracy.

If, for example, you decided that you wanted an almost pixel-perfect British Racing Green Aston Martin in Forza Motorsport, and felt that the developers' official rendition of it was ever-so-slightly off, simply look it up in the document and follow the recreation directions. Every little important bit of information is listed here, from the type of color you should apply (normal, glossy, flake, etc.) to the exact slider values you should input. It's all in there, kept safe and sound and, perhaps most importantly, still being worked on.

That's right: even though the community that kicked the project off began their work years ago, when Forza Horizon 4 was mucking about, GTPla??net members such as MadaraxUchiha are still actively updating the sheet for future reference. And don't forget, since all the modern Forza games share the underlying paint application system, the swatch customization is?? essentially unified from the ground up.

Obviously, there are still downsides to the system. For example, no matter how much you tweak your car paint values, it's entirely possible that Forza games' respective car paint shaders simply cannot display all the nuance of a given swatch. This, sadly, is unlikely to be on the developer Turn 10's docket of things to fix about Forza Motorsport, but at least you now know where to look if you want to get your Forza car paints as accurate as humanly possible.

Forza Motorsport's Update 6 - due to release in March 2024 - is shaping up to be a huge step forward for the live-service racing game from Turn ??10. Notably, the developer has just revealed that?? the game's entire Car Level progression mechanic will be getting upended in accordance with player feedback.

Notably, Turn 10 has gone back to the drawing board with Forza Motorsport's Car Level mechanic, as promised earlier this year. From the very start, a vocal portion of the player base has been highly critical of Turn 10's decision to lock vehicle upgrades behind level gates that, granted, do take a while to reach. The issue was so serious at one point, in fact, that player??s discovered a way to fully automate the process just to side-step it. That's all set to change with Update 6, however, which will make thi??s entire feature essentially optional.

Image via Turn 10

Turn 10 fixes Forza Motorsport's Car Level progression

As outlined in Turn 10's new Car Progression blog, players will no longer need to grind levels to upgrade their vehicles as of Update 6. There are two main changes being de?livered here??:

  • Every car upgrade will be accessible from level 1 onwards
  • Players will be able to purchase Car Points, the vehicle upgrade currency

More specifically, Car Points are basically an upgrade currency that can be spent on specific parts and tweaks to change how a vehicle behaves. Up until now, the only way to stack up Car Points was to grind races in a given car until you have enough CP to invest in your desired upgrades. Each level brought in a set amount of CP, as well as unlocking particular parts. The interesting bit is that CP ??is fully refundable. If you decide that spending 700 CP on a new set of tires was a bad investment, you can simply retrofit the original set onto the vehicle, and reinvest your CP elsewhere.

Once Update 6 hits, on the other hand, you'll be able to spend earnable Credits (the car purchasing currency) on CP for a specific vehicle. And, since all the upgrades will be accessible from level 1, a huge portion of the game's grindin??g loop will be made entirely optional.

"We’re testing a ratio of 4,500 Credit??s for 500 Car Points and based on the feedback we’ve collected, we expect this to provide a healthy balance," Turn 10 explained.

It's a great change for those? who didn't like how the game handled its RPG-esque progression system, but it being optional means those who enjoyed the grind ?will still be able to participate in it. Quite player-friendly, at least on paper.

There's still some time to go before Update 6 hits Forza Motorsport, of course. Update 5 is coming out around mid-February, for one, and it's going to include the long-anticipated Nürburgring Nordschl??eife track. A single new track isn't a huge deal on its own, granted, but it does build upon Turn 10's reasonably impressive post-launch track record, with each major new? patch introducing a new raceway. That, at least, has been satisfying to see, and it appears set to continue for the foreseeable future. Presumably, Update 6 will have its own new track for players to race on, but that remains to be ?seen.

While there's certainly something to be said about Turn 10's overreliance on temporary, live-service content in Forza Motorsport, the studio has been adding lots to the game post-release. All-new tracks are usually the highlights of their respective upd?ates, and Update 5's Nürburgring Nordschleife will be no different.

Slated for release sometime around mid-February, Forza Motorsport's Update 5 seems to be positively loaded with fixes and improvements. Important as they may be, these fixes aren't nearly as exciting as the long-anticipated release of the legendary 20.8-kilometer Nordschleife track, coming as a follow-up to Update 4's Daytona International Speedway and Update 3's Hockenheim. In comparison, Nordschleife is suppo??sed to be a fair bit longer and more? challenging, hopefully rivaling the racing heft of its real-world inspiration.

Image via Turn 10

Forza Motorsport's Update 5 features the Nürburgring Nordschleife

Previously demoed as part of January 2024's Forza Monthly livestream, Nürburgring Nordschleife is one of the most popular and interesting racing tracks in the world, and the fact that it wasn't available in Forza Motorsport on day one was, arguably, a serious misstep for racing a??ficionados.

Thankfully, Turn 10 is now aiming to resolve this fault once and for all, allowing players to race on the Nordschleife in any of Forza Motorsport's available game modes.

Whether you're looking to try and beat 2022's production car lap record (6:35.183, for posterity's sake) or simply level up your vehicles on a fun and challenging new track, Nordschleife will be yours to do with as you please as soon as Update 5 hits your download qu?eue.

In a broader sense, Forza Motorsport's Update 5 also marks the beginning of Turn 10's long-term fix-up plan for the game, as outlined in the studio's announcement from earlier this year. More specifically, Turn 10 promises that Update 5 will include?? all of the following improvements:

  • Option to skip practice in Career Mode events via the pre-race menu
  • Practice Session save point
  • Livery Editor fixes and quality-of-life improvements
  • Resolved letterboxing while using Photo Mode on non-baseline aspect rations (e.g. 21:9)
  • PC performance improvements (reduced CPU spikes and better GPU utilization) and framerate consistency
  • Resolved crashes caused by multi-threaded rendering
  • Fixed performance issues caused by video setting changes

The full list is, of course, far more exhaustive, but this should give you an idea of what to expect o?ut of Update 5.

Naturally, players should still expect the majority of newly added content to be of the temporary sort, with new Career Mode championships replacing the currently available roster. That is the nature of Forza Motorsport's live-service approach, however. As long as there's some evergreen content dropp??ing in with large batches of fixes for all platforms, most players should find the game's FOMO relatively easy to ignore.

While Forza Motorsport?? may well insist on steering well c??lear of permanently adding new events to its roster, the developer Turn 10 has been able to deliver on some key fronts regardless. After the release of Hockenheim in December, in comes the Daytona International Speedw?ay, at long last.

More broadly, new race tracks are the most notable repeat additions to Forza Motorsport's selection of content following its October launch window. Almost every major new patch has introduced a new track so far, and with Daytona coming in as part of Update 4 later today, on January 16, this seems poised to continue. Sadly, the rest of Update 4's ??content ros??ter is way more transient after all.

Image via Turn 10

Forza Motorsport's Update 4 adds the legendary Daytona

The Daytona International Speedway is, of course, the crowning jewel of Forza Motorsport's Update 4, but there's more to the patch than just that. For one, all three of the game's post-launch tracks (Yas Marina, Hockenheim, ??and Daytona) will now be integrated into existing evergreen Builders Cup events. This should help refresh the game's permanent race roster to some extent, though there's plenty? of temporary content being added as part of Update 4 as well.

The Career Mode is, for example, being updated with the all-new Italian Chall??engers Featured Tour, pitting players against Italian vehicles in key motorsport niches. These are as fo??llows:

  • January 18: All-Wheel Driven
  • January 25: Roadster Renaissance
  • February 1: Alfa Performance
  • February 8: Prancing Power

All four of these cups will, of course, get phased out of the game's rotation of active content on February 29.?? Players interested in racing against iconic Italian powerhouses ought to jump into the game before the time is up.

Naturally, Forza Motorsport's Open Tour mode is being refreshed as well. Whereas the last update featured races against vehicles built in the United Kingdom, players will now have the opportunity to face off against classic racing cars. The Open Tour refresh is kicking in on January 18, ??and players who complete all four of its events (C, B, A, and S-tier, respectively) will unlock the Alfa Romei Giulia Sprint GTA from 1965.

Now, there is an assortment of multiplayer events being added to the game as well, but Forza Motorsport is in a bit of a pickle in that regard. Notably, while Turn 10 may have promised massive improvements to the game's core systems for 2024, online racing communities TORA and Racing Haven have paused FM events until all of their qualms with the game are resolved. As Forza Motorsport banks heavily on its multiplayer features to keep players coming back for more, this is bad ne??ws for Turn 10, who will? need to fight tooth and nail to get fans back into the game.

As good as Forza Motorsport's driving physics and core gameplay may be, Turn 10 still has a long road ahead of it before the game could be considered one of the greats. For those who are sticking with it, Update 4's Daytona should be a joy to race? on, at least.

Everyone knows by now that Forza Motorsport launched in a less-than-stellar state in October last year. Developer T??urn 10 has since pulled up its sleeves in the int?erim, delivering a series of solid updates over the last few months, but the best is yet to come.

At the very least, that's what Turn 10 itself claims in its latest development roundup. The studio is planning major revisions to three areas of Forza Motorsport's gameplay: the car progression system, AI, and race regulations??. These should be getting revamped "in the coming months," though the extent of the ch?anges isn't clear.

Image via Turn 10

Turn 10 aims to continue improving Forza Motorsport in 2024

Naturally, Turn 10's window into what's going on behind the scenes with Forza Motorsport is great news. All three of ??the major gameplay aspects th?e studio highlighted do indeed need further revisions, with car progression, in particular, being a bit of a sore spot from day one.

"Addressing [the feedback on car progression] is a top priority for the team goin??g into 2024, however it will take some time to properly evaluate options, make the necessary code changes, and thoroughly test those code changes," notes the blog.

Additionally, Turn 10 has seemingly reached out to experienced community members for help with Forza Motorsport's implementation of race regulations: "It’s important that we capture all the data that we can about a race when FRR rulings happen in error, so over the next few months, we will be working with some long-time competitive Motorsport players to gather direct telemetry from them while t??hey’re playing."

As for the ga??me's sometimes shoddy? AI, improvements should be dropping in soon: "We understand how important it is to have fair and competitive AI in Motorsport and our top priorities in early 2024 are addressing overly aggressive AI, while also getting a cleaner race start into turn 1 where many of the issues above most severely manifest and impact players."

Great news across the board, but perhaps telling that not a word was said about Forza Motorsport's reliance on FOMO and timed events. Timed unlocks are unlikely to be changed anytime soon, of course, but ??if Turn 10 can deliver on all three of the frontlines promised, then the player base should have a far superior product at hand, regardless.

Following its fairly problematic release, Forza Motorsport has slowly but surely started turning things around at the rate of a first-generation Bugatti Veyron, as it were. While the new updates have been adding lots? of content,?? it just so happens that much of it is temporary, at best.

More specifically, even though the developer Turn 10 has been hard at work producing new events and adding them to Forza Motorsport's roster of available content, none of them are going to be permanently available as part of the game's relatively barebones Career mode. Updates 2.0 and 3.0 have both introduced two new Career Tours each (with four unique races featured in every Tour), only to have th??em taken out of the rotation as their respective seasons get wrapped up.

Screenshot by snakedbr

Forza Motorsport's Career championships are pure FOMO

As Forza Motorsport's Career Mode doesn't offer racing opportunities for many of the game's vehicles, this sets up a situation where Turn 10 introduces distinctive events and Tours as temporary additions, which is a clear signifier of FOMO (i.e. fear of missing out) player retention tactics. Even the Forza Motorsport community has caught wind of Turn 10's take on temporary content, and players are unhappy about it.

Naturally, there are unique, temporarily accessible rewards attached to these temporary Tours. Players who have missed out on getting the 2020 Acura ARX-05 and the 2020 Audi R8 V10 Performance mo??dels while their respective Tours were up can no longer obtain these cars, for example.

Even though this strategy is relatively novel to Forza Motorsport proper, it's not new to Forza at large. Playground Games' Forza Horizon 5 is infamously loaded with seasonal exclusivity and time-limited events, for example. One could argue that the new Motorsport's take on FOMO wouldn't be so problematic if its Career Mode had races for all of its vehicle types, but as it stands, there's just no reason why all of the game's? post-launch content would have to get yanked out of rotation?? every so often.

Turn 10 has just announced its plans for Forza Motorsport's Updates 3 and 4, with Update 3 already jotted for release on December 12. Its highlight feature? The iconic Hockenheim race track, featuring three unique track layouts and a whole suite of n?ew vehicles to test on it.

Even though Forza Motorsport launched with a huge array of problems, especially on PC, the developer Turn 10 seems to be juggling both game fixes and the introduction of all-new content fairly well. The game's first post-launch track, Yas Marina, was released as part of Update 2 on November 14, and Hockenheim is being?? added into the mix almost exactly a month after it. As Update 3, too, promises a suite of stability and performance improvements alongside new content, this sets a steady pace for fans of the title.

Forza Motorsport gets the Hockenheim track on December 12

As per Turn 10's official announcement, Update 3's Hockenheim track for Forza Motorsport comes bearing three distinctive track layouts for p?layers to choose from:

  • 2.8-mile Full Circuit track
  • 2.3-mile National Circuit track
  • 1.6-mile Short Circuit track

On top of being featured as part of new championships, Time Attack missions, an??d other assorted content, players will also be able to experience Hockenheim using the open?-ended free-play options, should they choose to do so.

Hockenheim isn't the only truly new bit coming as part of Forza Motorsport's Update 3, however. Notably, Turn 10 is introducing unique Driver Level milestones at levels 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and 100, each with its own unique race suit customization. Further, there's a selection of interesting ??new vehicles being added to the Spotlight roster over the next couple of months:

  • December 14-21: Automobili Pininfarina Battista (2020)
  • December 21-28: Ferrari 296 GTB (2022)
  • December 28 - January 4: McLaren Sabre (2021)
  • January 4-11: Aston Martin Valkyrie (2023)
  • January 11-18: Lamborghini #63 Squadra Corse Huracán LP620-2 Super Trofeo (2015)

Those who just want a slew of new races to burn rubber in, the exciting Contemporary Tour is featuring top-end sports and super-sports vehicles from across the world. The Contemporary Tour, note, is a timed offering and needs to be completed before January 31. The British Marques is, on the other hand, being added to the game's Ope??n Tour cup roster, and completing its C, B, A, and S race series before January 18 will unlock 2015's McLaren 650S.

Turn 10 is also adding a slew of other Rivals and Featured Multiplayer events, each of which tackles a different aspect of automotive sports. Plenty of variety is in tow for Update 3, then, and Turn 10 has already confirmed that Update 4 will be released sometime ??around mid-January, giving us some insight into the game's longer-term content pipeline.

Forza Motorsport launched in a less-than-stellar state, with performance problems, bugs, and graphical glitches galore. Turn 10 is aware and working on some of those iss??ues, but Forza's community is also hard at wo??rk improving how the game looks.

According to Gabriel Corrêa's Reddit post, they may have discovered a way to improve Forza Motorsport's shipped ray tracing capabilities by a fair margin. After snooping through files, Corrêa explained how they pieced together that Motorsport's configuration still use??d low-definition textures even when set to Ultra. Corrêa also shows they fixed the rendition of wheels at extreme speeds, along with other issues discovered combing configuration files.

"I compared the files in FM with those in FH5 and found these problems," wrote Corrêa. "512x512 cubemap texture (how can they promise realistic reflections if the texture of the reflections has?? no definition?), shadows/paintings of opponents/skybox all in low definition even in ULTRA, wheels becoming a .PNG with blur inst??ead of the 3D model, several LOD levels but with super low change metrics (a texture at 200m had no definition due to LOD adjustments) and many other problems that were adjusted based on values from FH5 and Assetto Corsa."

As Digital Foundry pointed out in ?its technical review (hosted on Eurogamer): "Early preview footage from the game - as well as some of the shipping game's real-time cinematics - showcase expanded RT reflections, with the environment displayed as well." These expectations were not hit in regular gameplay, even on PC, with the game's real-time ray tracing instead launching in its subdued, less impressive form.

On YouTube, Corrêa goes into more detail about their "nerfed" Forza fix. The footage demonstrates the better reflections, textures, and wheels all in actio?n.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tQ8GV26xf0

Official fixes for Forza Motorsport are coming

While Corrêa's "unnerfed" ray tracing implementation is very welcome indeed, Turn 10 isn't sitting on its laurels either. As per the studio's announcement, Forza Motorsport players should expect patches soon. Among those fixes include: "tweaks to the gameplay sys??tems, features and quality of life improvements, as well as new content th?at will be introduced every month."

Forza Motorsport had a suite of far more comprehensive ray-tracing features. Turn 10 specifically mentioned Global Illumination (or RTGI) in an earlier version of its FAQ, only for it to never materialize. This, combined with Forza Motorsport's seemingly broken and/or partial RT implementation, suggests that Turn 10 may end up delivering big graphical updates to the game later down the line. Forza Horizon fans may recall something similar happened with Forza Horizon 5's in-game ray tracing, too.

As one of the more hotly anticipated games of 2023, a lot has been riding on the new Forza Motorsport. A soft reboot for the long-lasting franchise, it has taken a whopping six years for the developer Turn 10 to push out a new entry. While this would usually be cause for celebration, things aren't looking great as it currently stands, with an impressive list of known issues in Forza Motorsport for Turn 10 to acknowledge and resolve.

On day one of the game's release, Turn 10 published a comprehensive list of known issues in Forza Motorsport, counting dozens of problems big and small. This, of course, isn't a problem in and of itself, but the sheer number of bugs ?on show is rather impressive.

It does get worse, too. On top of backend bugs, balancing issues, and performance problems, Forza Motorsport also suffers from a whole array of visual problems. Community members have been reporting extremely muddy textures and instances of car cockpits loading only partially, for example, but there may well be bigger fish for Turn 10 to fry. More specifically, Forza Motorsport can look remarkably unflattering at times, and no one knows yet whether th??at's the intended eff??ect or not.

Forza Motorsport releases in a rough state

On a technical level, Forza Motorsport does indeed deliver the sort of experience that racing game fans have come to know and expect out of the franchise. It's a highly technical and engaging racer that feels appropriately similar to its wackier cousin, Forza Horizon 5, all the while being more serious and grounded. The fact that Motorsport comes with such a massive list of bugs on d??????????????????????????ay one, tho?ugh, has left a bad taste for some.

Some of the most egregious examples include t??he follo?wing:

  • Matchmade individuals are matched using the incorrect values (lowest safety rating & highest skill rating instead of average safety rating & skill rating)
  • Party host can't move between different events after a race without disbanding or having to matchmake & exit
  • Player on Eaglerock Full Circuit may hit wall before receiving control
  • The game may not stay in fullscreen when playing on a non-primary monitor if the monitors are not the same resolution.
  • AMD machines running the PC builds will perform the entire shader precompiling step at every launch. Faster machines should be done in a minute or so, but older machines can take several minutes.
  • Playing offline due to not being able to connect to the Forza servers may result in an endless login retry loop.

Again, these are just some of the highlights from the full list of known issues in Forza Motorsport, as outlined by Turn 10. Further still, it appears unlikely that Turn 10 has identified all of Forza Motorsport's bugs at this time. On Reddit, players are reporting issues that haven't yet been added to the official list. I?n other words, as bad as the official list looks, it likely should be a fair bit longer still.

It's a rough day for Forza Motorsport, then, and Turn 10 has a long road ahead of it.

Xbox's spring plans are set in motion

The curtains have closed on Xbox and Bethesda's Developer Direct. The roughly 45-minute showcase spotlighted a taste of the year ahead for Xbox studios, running the gamut from updates on big launches to an out-now su??rp??rise.

It was, I think, a pretty solid showcase. Direct and to-the-point, the studios under Microsoft's banner showed off just what's in store in the coming months and year. Granted, this isn't all that Xbox has in store; we didn't see Starfield, though we knew we wouldn't going in.

This felt like a nice check-in for the new year. A few games finally locked in their release dates, the Forza team at Tur?n10 got to show off their rad tech, and Tango Gameworks dropped a surp??rise. Here's the rundown.

Everything shown at the Xbox & Bethesda Developer Direct

Minecraft Legends kicked the show off with a spotlight on its multiplayer. I'll admit, while the action-RPG hadn't hooked me in before, the build-and-battle set-up of its PvP looks like it could be fun. Brawling with mobs and ransacking the enemy's base, or forging an impenetrable fortress of your own, could be a good time for gaming groups with disparate tastes. Mojang and Blackbird Interactive's new Minecraft spin-off arrives April 18, 2023.

Next came the Forza Motorsport team, highlighting the work its putting into the next Motorsport entry. No? date on this yet outside 2023?, but the cars look and sound great. Big fan of the red convertible Mazda they highlighted during the stream.

Tango Gameworks was next on the mic, and they used their time to reveal Hi-Fi Rush, a departure from their usual horror-inspired games. It's a rhythm-action game with a ton of style and color, and if you like the look, I have great news for you: it's out now on Xbox Series X|S and PC. A nice little "out now??" surprise!

The Elder Scrolls Online revealed that its next expansion, Necrom, is on the way. It's a very Morrowind expansion, set in the Dunmer City of Dread. And what's more, all previous expansions will be free for a limited time. Seems like a decent thing to check out if you can't wait for Elder Scrolls VI.

Lastly, Arkane Austin took the stage with Redfall, its vampire-infested RPG-shooter. The co-op action looks solid, and there's a lot of town to retake from the dreaded horrors. It won't be long until your party can venture into Redfall either, as the new Arkane adventure arrives on May 2, 2023.

Big first-party Xbox Series X|S titles will see a price hike, including Starfield

Xbox manufacturer Microsoft has confirmed it's bumping up the price of its major first-party games. The tag on a new major Xbox game in 2023 will be g?oing fr?om $60 up to $70.

IGN broke the ?news that Microsoft's major, built-for-Xbox Series games are seeing a tick up to $69.99 USD. Regional pricing may differ, though specifics have not been outlined yet.

A spokesperson told IGN that the price reflect "the content, scale and technical complexity" of the games. Titles seeing the bump will st?ill ??be available on launch with Xbox Game Pass.

This $70 price point will apply to some of the Xbox heavy-hitters for the new year, including Forza Motorsport, Redfall, and Starfield.

The price of the game

Xbox head Phil Spencer said in October that he did think the company would, at some point, have to raise prices "on certain things." The price point was going to stick headed into the holidays, but once we're ?into 2023, that will see the tag finally shift.

It's a bump that several other companies have already made, too. PlayStation has hiked its prices up to $70 for its blockbuster first-party games, and publishers like Ubisoft have made similar moves. Others, like Capcom, haven't made the shift.

This comes amid a move to hike the price of hardware, too. Sony has also increased the price of the PlayStation 5 in select regions. And on the VR side of things, the Meta Quest 2 saw a price hike earlier this year.

Microsoft declined to comment to IGN about a?ny pot?ential console price increases.

Frequently, the rising cost of development has been cited as a factor in price increases. But as those ??initial t?ags go up, it certainly does make Xbox Game Pass seem like a good offer.

That's the eighth game in the series, not the franchise itself

When Microsoft unveiled "Forza Motorsport" back in 2020, a few heads turned. Not just because the trailer looked good! But because of the confusing name. This is the eight entry in the franchise, but Turn 10 and Microsoft are sticking with tha??t title.

Turn 10 says it's the "most technically advan?ced racing game ever made," and includes ray tracing, and "fully dynamic time of day" mechanics. It'll also feature tire and fuel management, tire compound nuance, and "advanced materials and shaders," with ray tracing making the game pop a lot more in terms of engine bay detail.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=7hrsYu8Vy04

The enhanced damage mechanic is also a huge focus, which gets as literally granular as dirt buildup. Microsoft says that the ray-tracing elements are via the "Xbox Series X and S consoles." The insane environmental upgrades are obvious based on the trailer, as they confidently showcased a zone that seemingly looked like a real-life area. It's convincing! I thought Gran Turismo looked great on PS5, but the differences between some of the Forza stuff here seems like it'll look even better.

Forza Motorsport is coming spring 2023 on PC, Xbox consoles, and cloud?? devices. And on Game Pas??s.

Imagine that

Simulation racers, by definition, are rooted in reality. They are approximations of real-life racing in video game form. Forza Motorsport is a series that has staked a claim over t?he years as one of the v?ery best at simulating the experience of being on the road and track.

That's why an announcement-adjacent developer video for the new Forza Motorsport might strike you as odd. Turn 10 creative director Chris Esaki says "The new Forza Motorsport is a reimagining of the franchise. It's taking what has made Forza great over the last 15 years and pairing tha??t wit??h great new game concepts."

How can you reimagine a series whose first-and-foremost goal for seven titles was inching closer and closer to complete and utter realism? What "new game concepts" are out there for a sim racer? Forza Motorsport has already been reimagined once, and it resulted in the superbly fantastic Forza Horizon franchise.

Anyway, Esaki mentions that Forza Motorsport is in early development which means there's plen??ty to show over ti??me. We've only gotten a confirmation it exists and a few performance targets. Maybe it'll make good on Esaki's vague claims. But, for now, it's hard to imagine a reimagining of something with so little creative wiggle room.

4K, 60FPS, raytracing

It was hardly the surprise of the show, but that didn't stop it from looking any less sterling. As many expected, Forza Motorsport was unveiled as part ?of the Xbox Games Showcase.

The one surprise, however? Xbox is evidently dropping the numbering conventions for this Forza game. It's simply called "Forza Motorsport."

Racing games always look great and they're some of the most impressive examples of new-gen visuals. Xbox head Phil Spencer says Forza Motorsport will hit 4K resolutions at 60 frames per s?econd ??with raytracing effects on Xbox Series X. This trailer was captured in-engine, which might give you some idea of what it's capable of.
