Company couldn't have predicted Fallout 76's failure in 2015

The announcement of Obsidian Entertainment's The Outer Worlds at last year's "Game Awards" seemed like a clear jab at Bethesda and Fallout 76. Sporting a tagline of "From the Creators of Fallout," the message was almost that this was the real successor to the once beloved series instead of whatever Bethesda was doing. In a recent interview with Game Informer, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart wanted to set the record straight that the studio isn't happy with fans dunking on Bethesda with The Outer Worlds.

"People even said things about our trailer: 'Oh man, just slamming it home to Bethesda!' because we said the original creators of Fallout," Urquhart told Game Informer. "I have no ill will for Bethesda, I love playing Fallout games... We're not fighting for the same dollars." The biggest point Urquhart stresses is that Obsidian couldn't have possibly known the backlash Fallout 76 would have had when it started work on The Outer Worlds in 2015.

Continuing on, Urquhart said, "Bethesda is looking to take the Fallout brand in a different direction. There's nothing right or wrong about that. That's their choice. They own it, they get to do what they want with it. But in our mind, there are people that enjoy where Fallout was. That is what we wanted to do with The Outer Worlds, to give people that."

You can watch a video interview with Urquhart over on Game Informer's website. The Outer Worlds is this month's cover game, so the current issue i?s chock full of information on Obsidian's upcoming RPG.

The possibilities are endless

In a live stream event today, Sega's CCO Toshihiro Nagoshi revealed that Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios (famous for the Yakuza series) will be revealing a brand new IP next month. With the studio's latest game, Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise, being heavily based on the Yakuza series' gameplay, Nagoshi stressed that this will be an entirely different project with no ties to older games (which rules out a Binary Domain 2, dammit).

Nagoshi stated that the idea for this new series has been in various stages of development for the last three years. Everyone is?? excited to show off more in September, which will likely be happening at the Tokyo Game Show. That event will run from September 19 to September 23, so you better believe I will be tuned into everything to get a glimpse of Ryu Ga Gotoku's future.

Fascinating!

Game Informer's September issue has revealed juicy details about the upcoming Call of Duty: WWII, including mission details and new aspects of the game. Players will get the opportunity to impersonate a Nazi Soldier, take part in an allied campaign set in France, as well as fight through the forests of Rhineland. You'll even get to pretend you're in Saving Private Ryan and play through the events of D-Day for the millionth time!

In a mission named “Wolf's Den,” players will get the opportunity to relive the events of Spock in the season 2 episode 21 of Star Trek and impersonate a Nazi soldier in order to infiltr??ate a German base. According to the article, the mission will have players attempting to blend in with other Nazi soldiers and remain undetected.

According to Game Informer, the game will also very much attempt to replicate the tone of Saving Private Ryan, starting with the D-Day landing operation on the beaches of Normandy. The game will be set all across Europe, from France to the Hurtgen Forest along the Rhine in an attempt to reach Berlin.

Sl??edg?ehammer Games boss Michael Condrey also discussed with Game Informer the use of Nazi icons within the game. According to him, the studio had debated the topic for a long while, but decided that only the campaign will have any Nazi iconography like the swastika. However, the multiplayer and zombies mode will not.

"It was important for us to balance the authenticity of the game and era, and the dark notes that come with the genocide that the Nazis brought to bear," he said. "We need to balance and respect that but also recognize this is a piece of entertainment and not dishonor the loss o??f life that happened there."

Call of Duty: WWII will be releasing November 3, 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Those who pre-ordered the game will get access ??to an exclusive beta, coming to PS4 first on August 25 and then Xbox One on September 1.

A lot of history in that room

Game Informer may be a competing outlet, but it's also a relic of the video game industry -- a relic tha??t's very much still relevant. Those dudes have been around for a long time. They've seen a lot of stuff. That should be celebrated.

Starting way back in 1991, Game Informer started collecting the games that it got a hold of. It's still doi??ng that. ??25 years later and it has 12,000-some games stashed away.

Take three minutes to virtually tour? Game Informer's vault. It's a neat look at some of the best archivists the video game industry has -- even if they didn't keep all of those big PC boxes.

Obsidian explain what tickles its funny bone

Obsidian struck me as an odd choice for South Park: The Stick of Truth, an unprecedented epic RPG and comedy. With only a hint of comedy in games like Alpha Protocol and Fallout: New Vegas, I wondered if Obsidian would even get what makes South Park so great. Apparently, they do.

In this video interview with Game Informer that went up on its YouTube channel today, the key faces behind Stick of Truth discuss their favorite episodes, going so far as to geek out over a ?goofy run animation and boldly claim that shark rape is, indeed, funny (a truth).

It's strange but this video has me more excited for the ??game, as I now feel confident in trusting Obsidian to hit the same co??medic beats and cutting cultural commentary of the TV series.

Game Informer's January cover is of...South Park? Wait, don't laugh. South Park: The Game is a real game, a collaboration between THQ and Obsidian. This isn't some crap cash grab, either. Instead you'll get a full-blown RPG for PS3 and Xbox 360, with series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone writing the script and performing the dialogue. In it you'll play as the new kid in town, where you'll ??have to make friends and protect the town.

This has to be something to be a cover story. GI says that their January issue will have all the details, including an interview with Parker and Stone. ??;

This could be good.

To give people a taste of what the Digital Edition of Game Informer is all about, the June issue has been made available for free until May 30th. More importantly, it gives you the Assassin's Creed: Revelations (or: AssRevs) cover story.

There is a ton of info about the game, like being able to craft and use different types of bombs, Ezio's new hookblade that helps him in combat and navigation through the city, the city's areas, how taking control of a city segment is more comple?x than taking out a Borgia tower, and more.

Interestingly enough, there's also a bit that sounds like the game will have Inception-style levels where Desmond traverses his subconscious in order to try and figure out how Ubiso??ft is going to?? continue the franchise after 2012.

If you are a fan of the franchise, then go give it a read here! Just remember it's no? longer free after the weekend.

Game Informer has kicked off its Assassin's Creed Revelations cove?rage with a massive three-part video interview with the game's creative director, Alexandre Amancio.

According to Amancio, Ubisoft is looking to put a pretty little bow on the stories of both Ezio and Altair with the upcoming title. That means all of your burning questions (my b?iggest one being a candid "What the f**k?") will be answe?red.

"This game is where w??e're setting the record straight," he explains. "We're closing all the loops that have been s?tarted, [those] that have been left in suspense. And we're going to reveal no only a lot of stuff about the first civilization plotline, but we're also going to conclude the Ezio and Altair storylines."

More importantly for fans waiting for the next "true" installment of the series, it also means we'll see an all new character focus in Assassin's Creed 3.

Game Informer's got the lock on Assassin's Creed Revelations info for a bit, but we'll have more as we lead into E3 wher?e we'll get a chance to see the game in action.

Game Informer has two new screenshots for Mass Effect 3. The screens show Cerberus forces opposing Shephard on the Salarian homeworld, which we all know as Sur'Kesh. Given that planets in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2 were either homeworlds (like Tuchanka) or economic hubs (Omega, Illium), perhaps Mass Effect 3 will feature all of the other ??races' homeworlds? I'll take one Elcor homeworld please.

The Salarian settlement or city depicted in the screenshots seems to be under attack, so it's anyone's guess why Cerberus would be there in the first place and why they are actively opposing Shephard's quest to? rid the galaxy of the Reapers. Or how they got past the Salarian Special Task G??roups.

Let's hope th??e Illusive Man hasn't done one of those "We have to join <evil force> or be destroyed, and they promised to give me <high ranking position of power devoid of meaning in a dead world>" thing?s.

Game Informer will have the scoop on a lot of Mass Effect 3 stuff, which means two things. First, now you'll have to buy that issue because it's MASS EFFECT. Second, that makes me sad because I'm not bloody likely to find a Game Informer in?? a local store here in The Netherlands any time soon.

The magazine's website is claiming that the May issue will have 12 pages of Mass Effect 3 info, screens, and art, as well as some other stuff about games that are not Mass Effect 3. And like with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, we'll probably have to wait while they drip feed us information through some exclusivity deal. Which we'll still all eat up like famished orphan children of course, as this is Mass Effect 3 we're talking about.

Please, Game Informer, use the new Call of Duty as a future cover s??tory so we can all stop caring about one of your covers for once!

They've managed to increase their circulation 33 percent in 2010, ranking them higher than T?ime and Sports Illustrated.

GI's doing something right. Circulation fell 1.2 percent in 2010 and newsstand sales fell 7.3 ?percent in the last half of the year, but they're still climbing. Could it be that all that rabble you hear at the register at Gamestop is getting through to some people?

Is Game Informer like, your f??avorite thing ever? Do you ?just read it open and read it with excitement every month? I mean, they're the top gaming mag.

The upcoming Silent Hill sequel, previously known as Silent Hill 8, has been officially named Silent Hill: Downpour in an upcoming issue of Game Informer

First details of the game reveal a town so vast that it needs a Subway system to explore, with areas that include the never-before-seen Southeastern side of Silent Hill. There are no hospitals or schools in this area, eliminating locations that have been part of the Silent Hill experience since inception, but there will apparently be optional si??dequests this time around.

Combat seems to take a page from earlier Silent Hill games, in that it's possible to avoid most encounters, and avoidanc?e is advised. You get one melee weapon at a time (an ax has been confirmed) but enemies are hard to kill and weapons break easily. The only mandatory fights are boss battles, which take the form of quick-time-events.

Water will take a major role in the game, and GI spotted a room with water r??unning upside-down o?n the ceiling. In another nod to earlier games, the puzzles will have their own optional difficulty levels.

Interesting ... sounds almost like they want to make Downpour more like the older games, but introduce an open-world setting. That's actua??lly pretty okay with me. It's too early to judge yet, but I'm really hoping this turns out well. I love Silent Hill and I'm desperate for a game that doesn't suck.

The front cover has an ultrav??iolet coating which will make the Skyrim logo pop out, thus demonstrating that even m??agazines are getting in on that 3D lark.

Every now and then, a game magazine will bring out a cover that I really like. This is one of them, and that's in no small way helped by the fact that I love me some Elder Scrolls. I can't wait for the game, and while I'm jealous of GI getting the skinny, I'll be delvi?ng into that mag like a bitch.??

As per Game Informer's style, its set to reveal a new game on December 6, and it just be Crystal Dynamic's next Tomb Raider title.

The reveal is teased in the latest issue of the magazine, with a two page spread depicting the image of a crashed sea vessel washed up on the shores of an island. The words "A Survivor is Born" are printed across the pages, and there's even a website to support the hype.

Back in July of 2009, concept art and details of a new Tomb Raider title appeared online. The plot involved a young, treasure ??hunting adventurer Lara Croft stranded on a mysterious Japanese island after a storm destroyed her research vessel. Budding Veronica Mars' of the Internet have also noted that the last two digits of the teaser website's Google Analytics account number match those of a number of Square Enix/Eidos websites.

December 6 isn't that far off, so we'll know for sure so??on enough.

The latest issue of Game Informer has been quite, uhhh, informative. Not only did the mag bring us details on LittleBigPlanet 2, but it also revealed our first details on Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Some of you may be a bit disappointed with what is about to come, some of ?you may be elated.

The big news is that MvC3 is going to play a lot like Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, and by a lot I mean it's pretty much using the same simplified scheme that TvC uses. However, things like Hyper C?ombo cancels, Snapbacks and assists will all still be present in the game. The game will a??lso include simplified launch attacks that will be triggered by an "Exchange Button," and can be countered by the opponent guessing the correct exchange move executed.

Aside from this possibly divisive bit of information we have confirmation (in some cases double confirmation) that The Hulk, Chris Redfield, Iron Man, Dante, Captain America, Felicia, Morrigan, Wolverine and Deadpool are all in the game. Seems that Chris Redfield will be bringing along his shotgun and shock stick from Resident Evil 5 while Deadpool will ?be breaking the fourth wall aplenty with ?attacks like beating his opponent with his health bar. I love Deadpool.

New details on the officially confirmed upcoming LittleBigPlanet 2 have been leaked onto the web from the latest issue of Game Informer, and damn, this ain't your younger-self-from-just-over-a-year-ago's game. From what was relayed onto NeoGAF LBP 2 isn't just a platformer with a very, very robust level editor, but a simplistic basis to design almost any type of game ever. Game Informer was demoed an RTS style game made with LBP 2 to prove it, but Media Molecule says you can make anything f?ro??m racing games to first-person shooters.

It's a little crazy all the advancements that are purported to be made in the sequel. Not only will you be able to assign controls far better, but you'll be able to design your own responses with a tool called the direct control seat. Level designers won't be constrained to using the signature gameplay mechanics of LBP. For instance, if you were remaking a classic Mario lev??el you could even make the Sackboys jum?p exactly like Mario.

On top of this is an enemy creator that is far more robust than the original, and has an AI editor, a robust sound creator, PlayStation Eye integration for loading levels using QR codes, ???the ability to string levels together, a crap ton of gadgets, the ability to make cutscenes, and an overhauled storyline mode that at the moment features the same platforming style gameplay as the original's. The post at NeoGAF also has some level and plot spoilers if you're really tempted.

Looks ?like Sackboy has really sacked up.??.. I'm sorry. I had to.

And so the trademark becomes a game, and there was much rejoicing.

The next issue of Game Informer will be revealing Bulletstorm, which is being developed by Epic-owned (Gears of War) studio People Can Fly (Painkiller), and published by EA (Harry Potter). As if the name didn't summarize it for you, the artwork on the cover should do the trick. Bulletstorm is about shooting people and killing monsters.

Next month's issue of the mag will reveal all, but the tiny blurb in the post about the cover tells us that the game will be a shooter (duh) that focuses not just on capping fools in the head, but also on racking up awesome combos through a variety of different kill types. The guys at Game Informer seem pretty impressed with it, as were the folks at Epic, who reportedly bought a majority stake in People Can Fly after simply ??seeing a demo of the game.

I'm digging the art a lot, if only because it reminds me of Doom's box art.

Team Bondi's L.A. Noire is a reality, and this month's Game Informer is the proof -- a ten-paged spread detailing the game which is rumored to ship this year. The magazine didn't only just get an exclusive in print, but an exclusive online as well, as it's published the first five official screens to hit the net.

While it may not be apparent from the screens, Team Bondi's title is aiming to make a breakthrough in how actor's performances (and looks) are translated to games. Team Bondi's Brendon McNamar?a says that simple motion capture wasn't doing the trick, instead working with ?its sister company, Depth Analysis, to design something incredible and new.

The result is a process that captures actor's perfor?mances from every angle, dumping all of those details directly into the game with zero work from human animators. While a single minute of facial animation used to take animators months, the new ?process can blow through 20 minutes in a single day... and presumably more accurately.

Team Bondi employed 200 some-odd actors to fill the roles of L.A. Noire, which apparently spans 2,000 pages of spoken dialogue. One actor, Mad Men's Aaron Statan, will play the role of the game's lead, Cole Philips. Looks like you can see Statan's chin in?? the image above. See? Technological breakthrou?gh.

You won't need to sit down for this one, as it should come as no surprise -- Rockstar Games' L.A. Noire is no longer a PlayStation 3 exclusive.

The title, which will be revealed in full in the next issue of Game Informer, is now confirmed to be coming to both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The info comes from Game Informer writer Matthew Kato, who in a comments thread ??on the magazine's Web site responded to questions regarding exclusivity.

"It's not a?? PS3-exclusive," he writes. "It was at one point, but it's coming out for the?? PS3 and 360."

The issue should be hitting mailboxes and store shelves soon, and I can't wait. The entire staff at Game Informer seems pretty amped up about what they've either seen or read... even if it's probably not coming to the iPad.

Surprise! Rockstar Games L.A. Noire actually exists!

Game Informer has revealed its March issue and as some had expected, the cover features the billion-years-in-development ??title. The magazine's 10-page spread mentions that the title will feature an "astonishing reconstruction of 1947 Los Angeles," and uses a "grou?ndbreaking facial-animation system." Lip curling and eye-brow twitching confirmed.

You know what this means? Expect a flood of L.A. Noire details soon, as the magazine hits shelves and mailboxes, and Game Informer (two words) likely backs it up with some solid onl??ine con?tent.

Really, Game Informer? Really? Is this what we're doing, now? We're comparing Wii game?s to PS3 an??d Xbox 360 ones? Apparently we are!

Yes, Game Informer has seriously run comparison shots between Modern Warfare: Reflex on the Wii and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare on the Xbox 360 and PS3 in order to prove ... nothing. Aside from being two totally different games on systems that have no justifiable comparison, I really don't know what anybody would get out of contrasting a Wii game and a?? HD console game.

Surely we all know that the Wii is not capable of the same graphics as other machines. Are there really people out there that need to see a visual demonstration before they'll understand it? I can't even imagine fanboys getting upset by this stunt, considering how hilar??iously pointless it is.

Anyway, just thought you'd like to know that something like this has happened on the Internet today. Somebody visually compared a 2009 Wii game ?to a 2007 Xbox 360/PS3 game, and it was the mos?t ridiculous thing in the world.

So ... which game do you think looks better?

Check out the hotness! That right there is Game Informer's teasing cover image for the long-awaited Warren Spector-developed "Epic Mickey" game. Rumored to be a steampunk Wii game that gives grown-up Mickey Mouse fans something to really chew on, the "Epic Mickey??" project is an incredibly exci??ting one, and this ludicrously cool art is most tantalizing indeed.

Now all we need, of course, is some actual gameplay to look at. This thing has been a concept for a very long time, and hopefully Game Informer will finally shed light on the ??whole thing. Still, I can't wait to see this thing in motion and find out if truly the expectation is worth it. We're going to have to sit tight until such Intel comes out way, so I guess all we can do right now is ??fap over that artwork.

Well? Get fapping!

[Update: GI accidentally loaded a full page to the Internet before promptly tearing it down. Luckily, however, we nabbed the page and can now spill some first solid details. Firstly, it's confirmed ??for the Wii as a single-player title and will be released in Fall 2010??. Check out the page, shown in our gallery.]

Here are some facts about inFamous:

  • In addition to the kitchen espresso, the inFamous team traveled to Starbucks approximately 18,200 times. Two groups of 10 people per day, five days a week.
  • There were 10 inFamous babies born during development. One employee had two during that time.
  • It took over 70,000 separate art, code and media check-in submissions to make inFamous.
  • The inFamous team consumed 17,472 cans of diet Coke and 13,104 cans of diet Pepsi during development.
  • There were no less than 14 high rise buildings constructed within 3 blocks of Sucker Punch’s offices during the inFamous development cycle.

Aren’t those facts fun! Actually it’s a little stunning to hear?? how much time and caffeine goes into the making of one of these blockbuster games. I don’t drink coffee, but if you’ve got an espresso machine in your office why do you need to go get Starbucks? Maybe it was for those sandwiches they have, those are good. Also, who keeps track of the number of sodas consumed?

In some actual news, the same post that informed us of these fun facts from Game Informer also gave news that inFamous will be coming to Home. No details yet on it, but if Home is really growing I suppose some people will be looking forwa????rd to it.

P.S. Overlord II also has facts.

Game Informer will drop yet another exclusive in their July issue, this time with Rockstar's Max Payne 3

The issue's cover shows off the new look of the "dark hero rebo??rn." Seems like the guy needs a shave and to find a laundromat; looks like he got spaghetti sauce (or something, who knows with this guy) on his shirt and pants. It looks like our friends over at ScrewAttack's Hard News have gotten their hands on the latest issue of Game Informer a little early. You know, the one with Assassin's Creed 2 on the cover?

Knowing how excited we were about the game, they were nice enough to pass along some key information on Ubisoft's game from the Game Informer cover story. OK, OK... they pretty much passed along all of the info. The key details are that the game will ??take place in Italy, as expected, with locations like Saint Marks Basilica and The Grand Canal included. Players play the role of Ezio Auditore de Firenze, a nobleman of Florence who can wield an axe, a hammer, a mace, and a spea??r, among other instruments of death. Oh, and he can also glide using DaVinci's flying machine

If you want more information on Assassin's Creed 2, you can find it after the jump. But be warned that it's potentially "spoiler" heavy. We'd also recommend that you pick up the magazine when it hit shelves this month; we're sure the folks at Game Informer bus??ted their asses to put together a killer article?? that's certainly more engaging than the list you'll find after break. Oh, and pretty pictures... lots of them.
