Toho, the legendary studio behind the Godzilla franchise and the Haikyu!! anime is now set to adapt the odd and creepy Nintendo Switch hit Exit 8 to the big screen.

Via a scoop caught by Gamesradar, we learned Exit 8's creator has just written a message to fans, celebrating the surprise of learning the small title would be adapted to the big screen just a year after re?lease.

If you don't know anything about the game I'm talking about, that actually speaks loads about Exit 8's prowess as the perfect indie sleeper hit. Exit 8 is a very simple affair, one where players are tasked with navigating a labyrinthian maze of liminal spaces that make up a nightmarish version of Tokyo's subway system. On top of the natural anxiety that comes from feeling lost, players will also have to deal with certain anomalie??s that are sure not to help them in their quest for freedom.

Even though it was this year's second-most downloaded Switch title, many still don't know about it. That sounds strange, but it is actually great if you're looking for a mysterious and creepy theater experience that?'ll have you on the edge of your seat.

Recent times have shown us that good video game adaptations can be a thing. While I have no idea how Toho manages to tackle such a title, I'm down to see what such a s?tudio will try to pull with the adaptation of this creepy internet copypasta-inspired indi??e hit about making the mundane terrifying.

Whether or not you care about the upcoming adaptation of this spooky indie, you can get Exit 8 for the Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, ??and PlayS?tation 5.

Earlier this year, Mintrocket and Toho announced a free Godzilla DLC for one of 2023's biggest surprise hits: Dave the Diver. Simply titled Godzilla Content Pack, this collaboration was completely out of left field, but both fans of the game and the Godzilla franchise reacted quite positively to it.

However, not everyone is aware that this DLC has always been time-limited. As disclosed in its original announcement trailer, Dave the Diver's Godzilla DLC is only going to be available until November 23, 2??024. After that date, it's seemingly going to disappear completely from online stores.

Both the base game and the DLC are currently available on PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, and ?both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. If you are a Godzilla fan and you only care about the DLC, the g??ood news is that you can download it for free on the Nintendo Store or the PlayStation Store, keep it, and buy Dave the Diver later. This doesn't apply to Steam, however, since you need to own the game before downloading its DLC.

In case you didn't know, Dave the Diver is a 2D adventure game about the titular professional diver, Dave, who catches fish so he can later serve them in his sushi restaurant. The game has a big focus on oceanic exploration, so the appearance of Godzilla - a famous amphibian monster who resides in the ocean - is not that out of place. However, the King of the Monsters is not alone, as Mintrocket managed to get the license of another classic Godzilla monster.

Dave the Diver also features Ebirah, a crustacean kaiju, and the main antagonist of the 1966 film, Ebirah, Horror of the Deep. While it's not as popular as other iconic monsters (Like King Ghidorah, Mothra, or Mechagodzilla), Ebirah's aquatic nature makes it fit right in with the game's atmosphere, themes, and overall vibe. On top of that, the Godzilla Content Pack also includes 20 collectible figurines of other classic kaiju for players to find. This DLC is a real treat for fans of the Godzilla franchise, so they should definitely try to grab it before Mintr??ocket and T??oho delist it tomorrow.

Yep, you heard that right. Godzilla has been unleashed on the world of Minecraft. Mojang and Microsoft released the Godzilla-themed DLC by Japanese studio Team-KYO on the Minecraft Marketplace today. According to the Minecraft blog, players will start in movie theater screening rooms before picking one of four adventures from the iconic Godzilla films.

Godzilla!

Look, I know Minecraft gets a ton of DLC. And honestly, I'm usually not too interested in it. But come on, it's Godzilla! Obviously, the King of Monsters himself is featured in the DLC, but based on the trailer, other monsters will be making an appearance including Gigan, King?? Kong, and King Ghidorah. Maybe we'll even see Mechagodzilla, right?

It looks like each of the four adventures in the DLC has its own gameplay modes. The blog told us about two. In ?the first, players have to flee from Godzilla in an escape mission. In the second, players are tasked with speed building to create walls and obstructions in an attempt to contain Godzilla and save the city. All four adventures can be played in multipla??yer and have unique rewards for completing and exploring them.

The Minecraft Godzilla DLC is available now on the Minecraft Marketplace for 1510 Minecoins. The closest amount to that you can purchase is 1720 Minecoins for $9.?99.

Kaiju vs. Titan

There has been a lot of good Godzilla news as of late, no matter which version of the big green monster you prefer. Apple TV+ is developing a Godzilla and the Titans streaming series, the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel wrapped up production last month, and Toho confirmed it's working on a new film set to release in 2023. Unfortunately, we're going to have to wait months, even years, to see what comes of those projects. Arriving far sooner than any of those is the big collaboration between the monster brawler GigaBash and the Godzilla universe. After weeks of ?speculation, ?we finally know what's coming as part of this DLC update, and it's a good bunch of kaiju.

Starting tomorrow, GigaBash owners will be able to download the Godzilla 4 Kaiju DLC pack and get immediate access to Gigan, Destoroyah, Mechagodzilla, and, of course, Godzilla. In the trailer below, you can see a lot of work went into these kaiju as film accurate as possible and I for one love that the Godzilla flying kick made the cut.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWMpfRJF5H4

In addition to the DLC pack, GigaBash will also be updated to Version 1.1, which includes some of the most requested features for the fighter. First and foremost, the game is getting an Arcade Mode, something I mentioned as sorely missing in my review earlier this year. It'll al??so receive a new Onsla??ught Mode that'll have players facing off against endless waves of enemies. This mode can be played solo or with a friend in couch co-op. Mayhem Mode, which includes several fun minigames, will go online with Version 1.1 and the game is getting cross-platform matchmaking.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5y4MYSlSzw

With all these new features and characters, it's a pretty good day to be a kaiju fan. The GigaBash x Godzilla DLC will launch tomorrow, December 7, along with the Version 1.1 update. GigaBash?? is now available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam or the Epic Games Store.

I hope this means Bambi isn't too far behind

One of the most enjoyable games of 2022 to play with a group of friends will soon get a lot more enjoyable. Not too long ago, Passion Republic Games announced it had secured a collaboration with the Godzilla brand for its party-brawler GigaBash. Details were scarce at first, but in the early hours of Godzilla Day–which marks the nationwide release of Godzilla/Gojira in 1954–the developers dropped a new teaser trailer giving fans their first look at the GigaBash Godzilla DLC.

He may be shrouded in shadows but that is the big green monster that's been saving and/or destroying cities since the '50s. As I stated in my review, GigaBash already has its own spin on Godzilla with the kaiju Rawa. But I have to imagine getting the big green is certainly a boon for the developers. I mean, he'll certainly make more sense here than he ever did in Warzone. Looking at his silhouette, I can't quite put my finger on which of?? the many different Godzilla costumes the character is modeled after, but it does seem to be taking cues from the Heisei era of the fr?anchise.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5Iqm0z5WWk

Obviously, it's a brief look at the big green, but I can't wait for him to join the action. Godzilla stomps his way into GigaBash starting on December 9. [Update: According to a press release, Godzilla will actually be one of four characters that will join the game next month as DLC.]  GigaBash is now avai?lable for PlayStation 4, Pla??yStation 5, and PC.

As long as it's not 'Zilla

Now this is a crossover that just makes sense. Passion Republic Games, the team behind this summer's sleeper GigaBash, announced it's working with one of the world's oldest movie stars. Though details are extremely scarce, GigaBash is collaborating with Godzilla on "something really special." Outside of the trailer below, that's about all we have ??to go on.

Does this mean Godzilla is coming to the game as a DLC character? It's possibl??e. Heck, the entire Toho roster of kaiju could be joini??ng in on the fun. But we just don't know because the only information Passion Republic Games has given us is that it's collaborating with Godzilla on "something really special."

In fact, wi?th such little information, this arguab?ly isn't a story worth reporting on. But I love Godzilla so much that I will find the 300 words necessary to meet the minimum SEO requirement for this article.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=rvyojs33gn4

If you haven't played GigaBash–now available on PS4, PS5, and PC–it's an entertaining 4-player monster brawler in the spirit of games like SNK's King of the Monsters and Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee. The game features a variety of Titans that all have unique gameplay styles, and while there is a single-player component to the game as wel??????????????????????????l as online play, it's best experienced locally with a couple of friends.

Admittedly, the game already has a heaping dose of Godzilla ?influence throughout it, including the set??ting for several of its stages, the Titan Rawa, and a couple of picture filters meant to mimic the films of the Showa era.

Should any iteration of Godzilla come to the game (I have my fingers crossed for Millennium Godzilla or the long-lost Ghost Godzilla), they would be a welcome addition to a game that could use a few more characters. The same goes for other Toho creations, like King Ceasar, Hedorah, or Orga. I'd love to see them and more find their way into this wonderful little brawler before people completely forget about it and move on to, let's say, Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher.

Godzilla is more than just a fighter

As a sheltered and awkward child growing up, I really have to hand it to my childhood friend Tristan. Our friendship was always tricky (he was my best friend, but I wasn’t his), but growing up, he helped me come out of my shell. He also introduced me to so many of the things I love today, like ham and cheese Hot Pockets, orange soda, potato chips on sandwiches, Super Smash Bros., and a giant beast known as Godzilla.

My first exposure to that radioactive lizard was over at his house, watching Godzilla 1985. The American cut, not the superior, Raymond Burr-less The Return of Godzilla on which it’s based. We didn’t know any better at the time. We j?ust saw a giant lizard stomping shit, and it was the coolest thing ever. There would be many weeke??nd sleepovers with VHS-dubs of all the classics, watching Godzilla fight everybody from the Thing to the Smog Monster to Mechagodzilla.

Super Godzilla

We also rented the video games, but those hit decidedly different for us. Starting with Godzilla: Monster of Monsters! for the NES, we were continually disappointed by big green’s games. Well, at least the ones that we could play. Godzilla saw more than a dozen outings during the ‘90s across a wide array of hardware, and not everything made it overseas. It wasn’t until Godzilla: Destroy All Monster Melee hit in 2002, long after my friend and I drifted apart, that I would finall??????????????????????????y be able to experience what is commonly known as the “good” Godzi??lla game.

But that was nearly 20 years ago. And following two inferior sequels, the franchise bottomed out with Godzilla Unleashed: Double Smash for the Nintendo DS. Since then, it’s been pretty dire for Gojira. He’s all but been relegated to shotty mobile titles like the idle clicker Godzilla Defense Force, Run Godzilla, and the recently released Godzilla: Destruction. The last console game for the kaiju to see a worldwide release was 2014’s Godzilla for the PS3 and PS4.

Why is that? Why has it been so dif??ficult for Toho to find a developer that can really do something with the IP? Why are we limiting cinema’s biggest beast to the sm?allest screens possible? Finally, why is it when a majority of Godzilla games are made, we play as Godzilla?

I mean, yeah, I understand the idea behind it. Put players in the control of ‘zilla and let them wreak havoc on Tokyo while fighting other kaiju. I get the appeal there and how it directly corresponds to the post-1964 ShÅwa Era of films whe?re Godzilla was always battling something across Japan.

City Shrouded in Shadow

But destroying shit isn’t exactly a rarity in games. The only thing Godzilla does differently than, say, Red Faction, is it lets us level a city as a giant beast. But when you play as Godzilla, you lose his scale. Godzilla is supposed to be a massive prehistoric sea monster, but you really don’t get that when viewing him from a top-down angle like in Melee. Nothing about him seems formidable or god-like when players are in control of h??im.

I truly think the only people in the past 40 years who’ve been on the right track with making the first great Godzilla game were the developers at Granzella. Back in 2017, they released Kyoei Toshi, or City Shrouded in Shadow, for the PlayStation 4. The game adapted the developer’s niche Disaster Report franchise for the giant monster genre, putting players in the shoes of a Japanese man or woman who tries to escape a city besieged by massive beasts and mechs. Of course, watching 20 minutes of actual gameplay from the title tells me it’s something I shouldn’t bother with. But still, if there is any formula that is on the right track, I’d wager it&r?squo;s that one.

I’m not sure what the future holds for Godzilla. On film, his time in the MonsterVerse is allegedly over, which means we might finally get a follow-up to the best Godzilla film to date, Shin Godzilla. There are also the Netflix anime movies and series that Toho has been producing for the past couple of years. As for ??games, there’s really nothing on the horizon outside of another free-to-play mobile title. I can only hope, with this new generation of hardware, some developer out there i?s starting work on what could be the first great Godzilla game.

Or if not, at least we have PlatinumGames’ Project G.G. A Go-Go to look forward to.

Free-to-play silliness from TOHO Games

TOHO Studios will three free-to-play titles starring the iconic King of Monsters: Godzilla. Available on iOS and Android platf??orms, the three games will see old nuclear-breath engaged in his trademark activities of smashing cities, battling ??Kaiju and... competing in foot-races.

The first title, Godzilla Destruction, is pretty self-explanatory, and will see players with Doing the Stomp all over a variety of cities and neighborhoods, leave a path of annihilation in his wake. The second release, Godzilla Battle Line, is more of a strategy title, where players build a custom team of monsters from T?OHO's long lineage of films to take on other teams in short three-minute dust-ups.

The third and final title, Godzilla Run, decides to just go totally off the deep end, and allows players to raise an??d nurture their own Godzilla and other Kaiju, with the apparent goal of making them as strong as possible "before they say goodbye." This also includes pitting your?? Kaiju against each other in the 100-meter dash and other athletic escapades. Wow, just like the movies...

Godzilla Destruction is available to download today on iOS and Android, with Godzilla Battle Line and Godzilla Run to follow later in 2021. I can't deny I don't have a whole lot of faith that they're going to be five-star releases, (there'll be no Matthew Broderick for a start). Any attempt to keep the King of Monsters in the public zeitgeist is fine by me, but... this is a legendary franchise with a wealth of inspiration and over 50 years of source material to draw from. There has to be a developer out there to do it justice.

Happy Godzilla Day, Destructoid! And what better way to celebrate the King of the Monsters than by stomping all over your fellow competitiors in Mediatonic's battle royale phenomenon Fall Guys...

...Well, you could always replay Destroy All Monsters, but just humor me.

A costume representing building-bashing lizard is now available to purchase in the Fall Guys in-game sto?re, costing a pretty meaty 10 crowns. It looks great. He's even carrying a litt?le car, which is a nice touch. Sadly, you can't blast opposing beans out of the way with radioactive breath, so you'll just have to keep pushing them off The Whirlygig instead.

Devolver Digital released a new trailer showcasing the Shinjuku Cultural Ambassador (no, really) in full effect. According to the publisher, the video also contains a few sneak peeks at other content coming to Fall Guys in the future, so be sure to keep those eagle eyes peele??d.

That headline goes for all of you just as much as it goes for me and my bad ?habits.

Don't be tempted. Don't waste your crowns on patterns, poses, or other frivolous shit you'll never use (even though you secretly enjoy adding fluff to your collection). You gotta earn 10 crowns and hold strong until Tuesday, November 3 – that's when Fall Guys is getting a sweet-as-hell Godzilla costume.

Why not ??unleash it this week, just in time for Halloween? November 3 is officiall?y Godzilla Day.

Our minds will very much be elsewhere next Tuesday, and I'm as dread-filled as they come, but I'm still going to try to take a quick Fall Guys break with the?? King of Monsters. I have to show? some respect.

As much as I still prefer to wear wild patterns over costumes ("as a symbol of my individuality and my belief in personal freedom"), I think I'm going to put on the Godzilla costume and never take it off.

I'll play anything if it has Godzilla in it

At the end of this month, film audiences around the world will be treated to what is my most anticipated movie of the year: Godzilla: King of the Monsters. As the third film in Legendary Pictures’ Monsterverse, King of the Monsters will introduce at least three more Toho legends to the franchise: Mothra, Rodan, and King Ghidorah. Every trailer for this film has been a pants-tightening experience, and while I know I’m getting my hopes up given I didn’t particularly care for 2014’s Godzilla, I’m too much of a franchise fan to be bothered by the potential that i??t might actually be a bad movie.

It’s the same for Godzilla Defense Force, an upcoming Nexon mobile game. There are a lot of red flags in the description of the game that should make me want to avoid it. It’s an idle clicker. It’s also a bas??e builder. It also has some card collecting elements. It’s free-to-play. It’s being made by Nexon. Any of those are reason enough for me to just forget about it and move onto a more worthwhile app, something 2019 has certainly been lacking.

And yet…Godzilla. I look at these screenshots, see the gigantic monsters, and I’m just absolutely giddy, like the first time I saw Bambi Meets Godzilla.

Godzilla Defense Force is available now for preregistration on Google Play. The game will be free-to-play with microtransactions. It’s probably not going to be good, but I’m going to play the ever-loving shit out of it because I just can’t say no to my big green husbando. And as much as I’ll probably hate the game, I’ll hate myself more for how much I’ll actually ?secretly love it.

Featuring a three headed monster speaking of our sins

I am a staunch defender of the 2014 Godzilla soft-sequel-reboot as a worthy member of the Godzilla family. Sure it wasn't great but for a westernized adaptation of a purely Japanese creation it held onto some of the more subtle themes, such as birth from destruction and embracing the monsters you cr?eate.

When we last saw the titular villain (hero?), Godzilla was leaving the ruins of San Francisco and returning to the sea from which he came. In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, we will see him return after our rampant sacking of our planet through industrialization and mining for natural resources causes the planet to go into defense mode, bringing forth legendary protectors to flush us out like a bacteria. Today at the Warner Bros. Comic-Con panel we got to see the first full-length trailer which showed off Earth's defenders as Mothra, Rodan, and ultimately King Ghidorah, all of whom will do ??battle with Godzilla in an effort to save the planet by destroying us. Perfect!

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will be the third in Legendary's surprisingly well done MonsterVerse that so far comprises the aforementioned 2014 Godzilla, and 2017's Kong: Skull Island. This will ultimately lead to Godzilla vs. Kong which is supposed to tie in with King of the Monsters but how at this point is still unknown.

Even just from this small snippet, I can tell we are in for another great monster movie that hopefully manages to bring some of the social commentary that was present in science fiction for years back to the forefront. Unfortunately, King of the Monsters won't be out until May 31st, 2019 so like Godzilla himself, we will have to lay in wai?t to see how it all turns out.

Taro, Zero, and Belial

This week's edition of Famitsu magazine reveals three more incarnates of Ultramen will join the superstar monster cast of City Shrouded in Shadow. They are Ultraman Belial, Ult?raman Zero, and Ultraman Taro. We're still h??oping for an English localization, but it will release in just over two weeks on October 19 in Japan.

I'm continually surprised by the number of Ultraman variations are out there, but I guess it should be expected when there are so many iterations of Godzilla and Super Sentai. This comes from ignorance of the franchise, but I find the name "Ultraman Taro" a bit amusing compared to "Belial" and "Zero." Taro is more than just a common male name in Japan, it's the common name: Taro Yamada is the Japanese?? equivalent of John Smith.

?In any case, I think there's going a little overboard with all the Ultramen and possibly Evangelion Units. Probably hard and expensive to get rights from tons of franchises (and then model, animate, and program different types of cr??eatures) but having like eight Ultramen seems maybe redundant.

Cory can confirm a Coco Curry collaboration

I've never played the Disaster Report games, whose naming conventions often confuse me like Final Fantasy I-VI, but they have a place on my backlog as something to check out eventually. To my knowledge they are pretty straightforward in tone and gameplay, playing like I Am Alive (at least in my head, possibly completely wrong), but City Shrouded in Shadow looks like the spin the genre needs.

Of course running around a Japanese metropolis from Godzilla, Ultraman, and Evangelion units while being an asshole to people would appeal to me. So it was at the top of my to-play list for Tokyo Game Show 2017. Of the 250,000 visitors, 240,000 of them were in line for Monster Hunter World, so I didn't have long to wait.

I was able to play the same opening section of the?? game that you've seen in gameplay videos before. Right off the bat the game tells you "This is goofy, rather than scary or serious" when you set your character parameters. You choose if you're a male or female, what business you were just attending to, your relationship with the girl/guy you're going to meet, and other options I forgot. I chose a guy, and after every further choice he made an exaggerated gesture and silly remark.

Once you get playing you feel the stiffness that comes with so many budget Japanese games: you're confined in boxed corridors, surrounded by invisible walls, and there are no physics to speak of. Cars don't hit? you and no-one reacts physically or?? verbally when you roll into them or crawl around them like a freak.

The main interaction you are capable of is conversation, but most NPCs just have one line of unspoken text that they repeat to you. Not until I walked into a convenience store did I have ??my first real interaction. It was a voiced cutscene with a girl working the counter, and I chose to pretend to know her. She asked me to get something for her, but instead I walked around the store looking for something or someone to interact with, only to be disappo??inted.

Back outside sudden chaos erupted as Ultraman began attacking the city and the game's framerate. Naturally I ran straight for him to see what sort of ways I could interact with him, or whether I could climb onto his foot. Nothing worked, so I at least wanted to see if he could kill me or if that much was limited to certain events in the game. Sure enough, he stomped on me, which ended my? demo because apparently there wasn't a time limit like in most event demos. I di?dn't have time to come back later to play more, but I got the gist of the experience.

The fun of City Shrouded in Shadow will not derive ??from any horror or gameplay, but rather from the story and the interactions you have with people. There are a lot of silly choices that will likely make it fun to play with friends, or of course stream and watch on Twitch or YouTube.

That's one unfortunate city

This Disaster Report follow-up sure it loaded with a bunch of wild monsters. Now it just got a bunch more announced via the weekly issue of Famitsu magazine. They are Mechagodzilla, Unit-00 and Unit-02 from Evangelion, Griffon and Abraham from Patlabor, and Dada from Ultraman.

Seems just about anything is on the table anymore. I won't be surprised if they announce Tetsujin-28, King Kong, or Demolition Girl next.

And take selfies

City Shrouded in Shadow is a survival game that has been gaining more and more attention in the west with its diverse cast of monsters, and now we finally have a first look at actual gameplay. From the makers of the Disaster Report series (but unrelated), City Shrouded in Shadow has you playing a couple trying to evade Godzilla??,? Ultraman, Evangelion units, and many more.

The live gameplay demo being played by the developers sho??ws the young businessman protagonist avoiding being stepped on by Ultramen, shopping at a convenient store, and interacting with other survivors. Dialogue choices include caring or helpful responses, insults that provoke some to fight you, and comical options such as taking the rare opportunity to get a selfi?e in front of two battling Ultramen.

Early on, they di??scover a florist whose shop has been destroyed. Instead of choosing to offer her money or simply leave her alone, they insulted her for laughs. In another scene, inside a burning building people are choking on smoke. You have an option to help people to the roof, or secretly go yourself.

I think it looks like an overall enjoyable experience, given the human interaction, choice system, and sense of humor. I'm getting somewhat of a Yakuza vibe from this too oddly enough.

Monster party

This crazy game that has you evading giant monsters is developing a Super Smash Bros. style roster of all-stars. Mothra, Battra, Gyaos, and Ultraman Tiga will join a cast that already includes Godzilla, Gamera, Ultraman, Evangelion Unit-01, King Ghidorah, Nise Ultraman, Alien Zarab, the Fourth Angel (Neon Genesis Evangelion), Legion, and Soldier Legion.

All these tokusatsu (Japanese term for media focusing on special effects, typically refers to monster movies, Super Sentai, etc) films are things I would love in indulge in if I had the time, but if this game is as good as it looks it would be a better introduction to them than the 2014 Godzilla&n?bsp;game. We'll get a first look at gameplay on August 3.

When thinking of creatures I'd like to see appear, my mind just goes straight to Reptar from Rugrats. It would never happen but it's? so dumb I'll hold on to my drea??m.

The rent must be mad cheap though

Growing up my dad and I watched a ton of Godzilla movies. Before Godzilla's huge fights with his foes gave into the tokusatsu (basically the person in a rubber suit genre) genre tro?pe of fighting in open fields and quarries, I had always wondered what it'd be like for someone living in the city Godzilla runs rampant in.

According to City Shrouded in Shadow, it's a miserable experience. The Japanese debut trailer for the title follows a man and woman as they try and survive attacks from fighting Ultramen, Godzilla, King Ghidorah, friggin' Eva 01, Gamera, and I think even a character from Patlabor

Either way, this looks like a terrible place to live but a super cool idea for a game. I haven't played developer Granzella's previous work, Disaster Report, so I don't know if this cool idea is in good hands. It looks neat, so hopefully it gets a Western rel?ease some time down ??the line.

Oh no, they say he's got to go

The Nintendo Switch has become a hot commodity here in the United States, and it's no less so in its home country. Japanese fans who've been trying to order the hybrid console thro?ugh Nintendo's online store have been seeing an error message for the last couple of days, accompanied by a si??mple drawing of a large lizard attacking Kyoto tower.

The creature bears some resemblance to Toho's movie monster Godzilla, though it doesn't have his dorsal fins. That hasn't stopped fans from calling the creature "Nin Godzilla," a play on the most recent movie, Shin Godzilla. The creature has become quite popular, inspiring fan art, needlepoint samplers, and even an endless runner game where you have to dod?ge towers and shoot error messages at bu??ildings.

The last Godzilla game on an Nintendo platform was the four player fighting game Godzilla Unleashed in 2007, a Wii followup to the GameCube's Destroy all Monsters Melee. It's unlikely that this sighting will lead to ?anything more, but it's kind of cool to see how fans' imaginations have been captured by a simple line drawing.

Try not to get crushed

City Shrouded in Shadow is an upcoming PS4 and Vita collaboration between Bandai Namco and Granzella, the developer currently working on the renewed Disaster Report 4 project.

The story centers around a couple trying to escape the city as it's being destroyed by shadowy giants. The last time we saw City Shrouded in Shadow, Ultraman was introduced as a potent??ial mischief-m??aker along with a subtle hint towards Godzilla.

According to the latest issue of?? Famitsu, Godzilla will indeed be making an appearance, and now we have an??other hint at a different giant. In the bottom right corner of the page... could it be an Evangelion?

I wonder what other monstrosities we migh?t?? see? Ghidorah? Mothra? A Titan? Personally, I'm rooting for the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

Better luck next time

This was supposed to be the game for Godzilla fans -- an authentic adaptation that captured the look and feel of the films. In some ways, it is. There's a satisfying cast of playable characters including Mothra??, Destroyah, and Jet Jaguar (he can even shrink!). The camera is staged to give the kaiju a worthy sense of scale. Buildings and tanks are toppled as if they're mere props.

These are high points of the game. Some people have expressed concern over the graphics -- we're talking PlayStation 2 visuals, at times -- but I was okay with that going in. Actually, I still am. It turns out Godzilla has far bigger issues.

Godzilla PS4 review

Godzilla (PS3, PS4 [reviewed])
Developer: Natsume Atari Inc.
Publisher: Bandai Namco Games
MSRP: $59.99
Released: July 14, 2015

Half an hour and several levels in, I wasn't sure Godzilla could really be hurt, much less die. That's not an inherently bad thing, as he's supposed to be tough, but I wondered where the challenge was. A few hours later, I found it. Godzilla is? far too easy e?xcept when it veers into overwhelming, unfair, not-fun territory. Then it becomes a boring battle of attrition against the same old kaiju.

A lot of frustration lies in the controls. You use L1/R1 to turn?? Godzilla, which is weird at first but eventually feels fine. He's got a forward-charging attack (that you'll frequently use given his normal plodding pace), a standard three-hit punch combo, a heavy ta??il whip, and atomic breath. The latter needs to charge up before you can fire it, but the cooldown isn't terribly long, especially with upgrades. Aiming, however, is a total nightmare; you don't have exact control over it.

Say you want to shoot down a helicopter. You'll need to position Godzilla close to it -- but not too close! -- and line up his body. Next, you can turn the camera to confirm his head is more or less tilted in the correct direction. Now fire away and hope that a) the helicopter hasn't moved and b) the blast doesn't just hit the ground. That's my best strategy and it's not even consistently successful. Thankfully, it got me throug??h the aggravating fights in which you're f??orced to take down a kaiju while multiple aerial vehicles (Super X, X2, and X3) come close, shoot you, then zip away.

For some baffling reason, there's no blocking in the traditional sense. While Godzilla's roar acts like a block to an?? extent, initiating it is by no means instantaneous. You have to know in advance that an attack is imminent or you'll be too late. There is also this odd invincible dodge move, but it runs on the same gauge as your atomic breath, so it's often unavailable when you need it most.

The end result is a slow, awkward fighting system that effectively recreates the movies but is annoying in practice. Although your attacks can and will be? interrupted by strings of combos, you can't always interrupt your enemy's moves. To that end, I stuck with Battra whenever and wherever possible (Versus, King of Kaiju, etc.) -- the moth is quick, easy to control, and cheap.

The main mode, God of Destruction, is something out of an arcade game. Levels are tiny, bland, and feature the same goal: destroy the generators. That's the focus. Generally, you'll also need to fight a monster, work within a time limit, or both. As you blow up vehicles and buildings, you'll earn points ??that fuel Godzilla's growth. There's a multiplier to encourage you to move quickly from structure to structure. By the end, he'll be about twice as big as when he first came ashore.

Branching levels give you control over which kaiju you engage as well as the overall difficulty. You're mean?t to replay this mode several times to see all of the (super-light) story and unlock characters, but environments are so similar, so unengaging. I've literally punched hundreds of generators to death. There are variations on God of Destruction that have you invading as another beast, or defending as a protector like Jet Jaguar or Mothra. The format doesn't help.

The game's extensive character upgrade system requires even more replays. Godzilla has quite a few moves that are locked until you can find and defeat specific monsters, some of which appear under myster?ious circumstances. King of Kaiju mode's six quick back-to-back fights help with gathering resources, but tied to such repetitious content, the progression system is flat-out awful.

Godzilla PS4 review

It was also disappointing to learn that the Versus mode for up to three players is online only. No split-screen support. There are Godzilla-obsessed fans playing, at least, so it's not a total wastel??and.

The only other bright spot is the Kaiju Guide, a colle?ction detailing the playable creatures as well as quite a few not featured. I adored seeing old stills from the films and, sure, there is a certain appeal to playing as a bunch of these guys. But the feeling fades before long. A love of the movies can only get you so far when the experience is this frustrating and hollow. What a letdown.

Hail to the king, baby!

I've dabbled in Godzilla games since the NES game Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, a game that for some reason took place in space; Mothra and Godzilla fought monsters and literally kicked rocks in this fondly remembered title. None of the Godzilla games have really given me that "giant lumbering king of the monsters" feel I've been looking?? for; that is until I played the latest title from Bandai Namco Entertainment.

The king of monsters is back i?n a big and cinematic?? way!

Godzilla (PS3, PS4 [tested]
Developer: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Publisher: Bandai Namco Entertainment
Release: July 14, 2015

Fans of the classic Godzilla movies will be pleased, as the development team at Bandai Namco Entertainment has focused on making the new game as close to the original films as possible, and it has mostly nailed it; the monsters feel huge and lumbering, the cities crumble and the fights are epic, camera angles mimic the look and feel of the original movies. Buildings exploding is especially on point, as it looks like the fake, firework-esque explosions from the original Japanese films. The presentation of Godzilla as a whole is really impressive.

When I first laid hands-on with the PS4 version of the game I was confused. The left stick makes Godzilla walk forwards or backwards, but the right stick only rotates the camera. After investigating the cardboard instructions stuck to the demo television I was surprised to find that the shoulder buttons, L1 and R1, are used to turn Godzilla slowly left and right. At first I was perplexed. "What a stupid control scheme" I thought, then after smashing through a few buildings and starting a fight with Ghidorah it finally clicked. The turning mechanic mixed with the cinematic camera makes you feel like a giant fucking monster and it is the first Godzilla game I've played that achieves this.

Godzilla isn't the only playable monster as every monster in the game is controllable, each with its own variation of the story. Radio communications by humans during the battles paint a story of destruction and desperation. Each stage has an objective, typically destroying specific buildings, but while doing so can lure up to two other monsters for battle where the game keeps a su??rprisingly solid 60 frames-per-second. Monsters include Mechagodzilla, Destroyah, Jet Jaguar, Mothra, Mothra Larva, Gigan, Biollante, Hedorah, and more. Even Space Godzilla made it in as one of the exclusives for the PS4 version.

The game will be launching this July for PS4 at retail and PS3 via digital. The PS4 version isn't just a direct port of the PS3 game as it has more monsters, an exclusive multiplayer mode, and the ability to battle two monsters at once. Those who preorder the PS4 version will receive Hollywood Godzilla, or the Godzilla model from the recent film, as DLC. If you've been waiting for the defining Godzilla game, this might be the one.

NECA is on a roll with these videogame-inspired toys, though admittedly Godzilla looks a bit like he's decked out in camouflage here. The 6" figure is modeled after Godzilla: Monster of Monsters, and it comes packaged in a cool faux-??weathered box based on the NES game's co?ver art.

It's expected to ship in July 2015, and p??re-orders are open for $21.99. Don't make eye contact.

Summer 2015

Each new trailer for Bandai Namco's Godzilla PS3 (and now PS4) game has looked better than the last but I didn't want to get my hopes up knowing it was only confirmed for release ??in Japan. I mean, I did anyway, but everything's going to work out: it's being localized for the West after all.

The announcement happened at the Game Awards which, god, it's been two hours now and the show isn'?t over. If I'm going to find strength to continue watching, I'll nee?d to stare deep into this gif.

Yeah, that's the good stuff. #dothekaiju

Still only confirmed for Japan, damn it

Am I going to have to import this Godzilla game for PlayStation 3, Bandai Namco?

(Psst: That's you?r cue to announce its lo?calization.)

It's out in Japan on December 18, so ...

Nothing?

Waiting indefinitely for the game to possibly release in the West feels less and less feasible with each new trailer. Seeing the likes of King Ghidorah, Mothra, Biollante, Hedorah, and that nimble goofball Jet Jaguar has me too excited. Those retro special effects are s?o dang ??cool.

Releasing in Japan on December 18 for PS3

It may not be technically impressive, but like Brittany, like Elliot, I say that's okay -- it's Godzilla!

Frankly, I'm just happy to see this project exist even if, for now, Bandai Namco is bringing it to Japan only. This trailer gives a much better feel for the game as it features city-destruction gameplay and fights with ??Mechagodzilla, King Ghidorah, Biollante, and Mothra.

If all else fails, I may just have to import Godzilla for Jet Jaguar.

Weighty and janky, just how I like it

Fun fact. When I was a child, my mother sat me down in front of Godzilla films and subsequently burned the??m into my brain. As a result, I ended up learning Japanese and moving to Japan as an adult. It's not a stretch to say that I'm where I am because of the ??big G.

So you can imagine my excitement when I heard that Bandai Namco was developing a Godzilla game for the PS3. The big monster has had more than his fair share of game appearances, but none of them have ever been any good. I recall playing Super Godzilla on the SNES and trying my best to convince myself that it was the best game I had ever played. Needless to say,?? I had some issues believing my own words.

Despite my not-so-great history with Godzilla games, I rushed toward the Bandai Namco booth at TGS to get my hands on the latest title. The demo was about ten minutes long, and I played as Godzilla in what appeared to be some kind of power plant or oil refinery. I was tasked with destroying as much of the area as possible, all while fending off military attacks and annihilating defense structures. After a brief appearance by Super X (of Godzilla 1985 fame??), King Ghidorah appears on the island as the final boss of the demo. The whole experience was relatively short, but it gave a good indication of what the various missions might feel like.

More than anything else, what stuck out to me the most in my time with Godzilla was the authenticity of every sound effect, piece of music, and monster animation. Much to my surprise, rather than composing original generic themes for?? the game, Akira Ifukube's legendary music tracks have been utilized. There's something empowering about watching Godzilla stomp around to his own memorable theme. Even the sound effects appear to have been taken straight out of Toho'?s vault. King Ghidorah's cackle, the sound of his energy beams, and even the maser sound effects are 100% accurate to what fans of the series know and love. The two giant beasts in the demo have been modeled and animated lovingly, with little touches like finger and mouth movement standing out the most. This feels like Godzilla, and that simple fact helped to elevate the whole experience. It's safe to say that they were going for nostalgia, and it works.

Controlling Godzilla wasn't difficult, but it took some getting used to. The left analogue stick on the Dual Shock controls G's primary movement, while the L1 and R1 buttons rotate him left and right. Square button is the basic arm attack, and moving the analogue stick while attacking resulted in a wide-reaching tail swipe. The triangle button fires off Godzilla's signature breath attack, while the circle button is used for grabs and throws. The X button functions as a charge/dash attack. I was impressed by how weighty the monster felt, especially compared to some of the older 3D Godzilla games. You can feel ea?ch step, each hit, and each fall; this is no high speed character action game.

It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows though. While the city destruction felt and looked great most of the time, Godzilla has some major slow down problems when too much is happening onscreen. At one point, I used the breath attack to lay waste to a set of buildings, and the game struggled to keep things moving at a decent framerate. Additionally, the textures on some of the environments and buildings weren't too hot. This wasn't immediately noticeable while playing, but during some of the in-game cutscenes it was certainly a bit jarring. The two PS3s running Godzilla froze multiple times while I was waiting in line, so I'm crossing my fingers that that won't be ??an issue in the final game.

I came in with low expectations, but I walked out of my time with Godzilla both hopeful and excited for the final release. The world needs more games about playing as giant monsters, and this looks like it might fit the bill. Hopefully the recent film's success can convince the folks up top to give Godzilla a chance in the west.

Looking pretty awesome, honestly

Remember that new Godzilla game that everyone seems to think will fail? I'm still interested, because Godzilla. And since the Blue Öyster Cult saw fit to write a song about Godzilla, everyone knows you should pay attention. Plus, didn't you just love Bryan Cran?ston's part in the new movie? Loved it to death, didn't we?

At any rate, these new screens reveal some fire battles that I want to be a part of. It doesn't look super polished or like?? any sort of innovative endeavor, but it's got Godzilla vs. Godzilla, and honestly that's all I need to know I want to give it a try.

What do you think about this new collection of screens? Are you humming "Godzilla" now? You should be. You know you tore it up when you played Guitar Hero. Don't even try to play.

Will the big lizard be localized?

The King of The Monsters is stomping his big dumb lizard feet all over the Playstation 3 this winter, but only in Japan. Bandai Namco hasn't really given us much else to go on for this game. Will it come out in the west? No idea, but the recent Godzilla movie from Legendary Pictures did pretty well, so who kn??ows.
