Grand Theft Auto is hijacking a new service: Netflix Games. Announced today, Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy -The Definitive Edition is making its w?ay onto ?the Netflix app in December.

//twitter.com/netflix/status/1729913002491834389

According to the Netflix website, players will get to experience the definitive editions of Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas all from their phones. Players can pre-register for each title before they launch on December 14. The news comes weeks after games like Hades and Braid were announced to arrive on the service next year.

For some, these games are staples of the video game world, as they redefined the series to what it is today. GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas came out in 2001, 2002, and 2004, respectively. Each of them launched on the PlayStation 2 and became the highest-selling games on the system. That's saying something given the console's immense success. Rockstar Games raked in the money, and the controversies, and became legends in the industry.

Grand Theft Auto III follows down-on-his-luck Claude as he enters the crime-filled world of Liberty City on a quest for revenge. Vice City, on the other hand, tackles its version of Las Vegas with Tommy Vercetti's rise back into the mafia scene after being released from prison. Finally, San Andreas showcases a more re??alistic world as we see CJ Johnson's reluctant return to gang warfare.

For many people, the thought of accessing any GTA from your phone is amazing, even more so from Netflix. You'll get that fantasy, though there is one problem: it's Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy. Yes, the one that came out last year to abysmal fanfare. Its horrendous launch and low quality made even?? die-hard fans wince. Fortunately, it seems like changes were made, as the collection is set to be 'updated' for mobile devices.

Still, this is a huge hit for Netflix Games, as their platform hasn't been as out-there with their games as other services have. Their section of games includes titles like Immortality and Oxenfree, among others. As mentioned before, the acquisition comes after announcing ??a few 2024 additions during Netflix Geeked Week.

December is shaping up to be big for Grand Theft Auto fans, as it was revealed last month that a Grand Theft Auto VI is on the way. Grand Theft Auto V has been the face of the series for 10 years and sold millions of copies over its lifetime. Now, finally seeing the next generation of open-world crime simulators will ?be nothing short of exciting.

Netflix subscribers can access their game catalog from the app. Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy is ??available for pre-register now and launches on Dec??ember 14.

Or are we all washed up?

Playing through Super Mario Odyssey, a strange thought comes to my mind; is this game as good as Super Mario 64? I don’t mean in the sense of quality or direction or anything that a review might cover. What I’m talking about is, will Super Mario Odyssey be remembered the same way as Super Mario 64? For as rough around the edges as Mario’s first foray into 3D game worlds might be?, that game release might be the single most significant mom??ent in the entire industry.

Few games define how other developers and publishers set out to make their own works. I can list off the games I’ve seen in my lifetime that have fundamentally changed gaming as a whole, but when was the last time that truly happened? After a long discussion with a bunch of the staff here, I’ve accepted that Minecraft is ??a pretty damn big deal, but what else in recent memory has truly defined a generation of games?

A lot of you may point to Dark Souls, but that is basically iterating on Ocarina of Time. Some people may even say Gears of War, but that was a riff on Resident Evil 4 (another game that might be just as influential as Super Mario 64). Hell, even Rockstar Games hasn’t really done anything wildly different since Grand Theft Auto III, a game that spawned a bazillion clones and practically created another genre. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds just might be the newe?st title to really shake up the industry, but even that is following in the footsteps of other “Battle Royale” games (one of which PlayerUnknown actually worked on!).

So my question to the community is this; will there ever be another game that is so wholly unique and se??ts so many trends that, despite its rough edges, we’ll still be talking about it decades later? For what it’s worth, I’m optimistic someo??ne will make something, but I don’t think it will happen until a console manufacturer radically alters the way we interact with a game (i.e. VR or something along those lines).

Buy GTA: San Andreas and receive 2000 Amazon Coins

The Grand Theft Auto Trilogy is now available on Amazon Fire TV and Kindle Fire. GTA III and GTA: Vice City are $4.99 each, and GTA: San Andreas is $6.99.

There's a special going on however where you can just buy GTA: San Andreas and you'll receive 2000 Amazon Coins along with the purchase. You can then use those free coins to pick up the other two GTA titles, and there should be enough coins left over to spend on other conte??nt on the Am??azon Appstore.

The ESRB has rated both Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for PS3 releases. Sony Computer Ente??rtainment America is noted as the publisher, since these g??ames are slated to arrive on the PSN as "PS2 Classics."

We had recently learned that the original Killzone was coming to the PlayStation Network, and this new informatio??n indicates that Sony's stepped up its efforts in getting PS2 games in a digital format. Hopefully we'll get some real classics, like the Altered Beast remake, or Shadow the Hedgehog. You know what I'm talkin' about.&n?bsp;

In all seriousness, this is cool by me. I quite fancy playing Vice City again.

We live in a privileged age indeed. Less than years ago, something like Grand Theft Auto III was amazing to behold on a home console. Its size, sense of fr?eedom, and explosiv??e production values were so amazing, one could scarcely believe it was running on a PlayStation 2.

Now, we can get that on our mobile phones.

Gaming has come a ridiculously long way in the ten years since Grand Theft Auto III first released, and the fact that such a game is now a??vailable on iOS devices is nothing short of amazing.

Grand Theft Auto III 10 Year Anniversary (iOS, Android)
Developer: Rockstar North, War Drum Studios
Publisher: Rockstar Games
Released: December 15, 2011
MSRP: $4.99

Grand Theft Auto III effectively defined a?n entire genre of game, one so popular that many games today still desperately attempt to ape its success. The open-world "sandbox" style of game may seem like a dime a dozen today, but back in 2001, the idea of a living, breathing, 3D city was staggering. We're used to it now, but opening up such a game on an iPhone or iPad goes some way toward bringing that magic back.

As the silent Claude, players are busted from a prison transport van and let loose into Liberty City. An increasing variety of missions unlock as players undertake jobs from a rogue's gallery of nefarious crooks, but they can always earn money by driving taxis, posing as paramedics, or just beating people to death and robbing them. Doing these things still carry that simple, often sadistic, satisfaction that it had a decade ago, with GTA III provin??g once again that being the bad guy is jolly good fun.

The 10 Year Anniversary edition of GTA III is more than a simple port. The game has been enhanced with fresh graphics, improving the look of characters and vehicles. While the game is still obviously dated in the visual department, the higher definition and richer textures make for a far more visually appealing game than fans are used to. Nothing has been skimped in the shrinking process either -- radio stations are all present and correct and cutscenes are fully voiced. This is Grand Theft Auto III in its entire?ty, only better looking, and ?tweaked to work with touchscreen controls.

The touchscreen controls, however, are something of an issue, providing by far the biggest barrier toward enjoying this updated release. Despite a r??ange of control options that make use of both the screen and the iOS device's accelerometer, there's no comfortable way to play the game. Be it walking or driving, every control scheme has its own set of unique problems, contributing to a more difficult and frustrating experience.

There's no fixed virtual movement pad while walking, the screen instead placing one where you put your thumb. While such input can work in certain titles, I feel this particular game would have benefited more from a definitively placed pad, as allowing it to appear anywhere in such a densely packed screen often leads to one's thumb dragging off the device while trying to walk. The camer??a is also unhelpful, wildly swinging to accommodating the player's awkward movements. Manipulating the camera means placing a finger on Claude and dragging in a desired direction. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess how much the interface can get confused between walking and camera controls.

While driving, one can either use virtual direction buttons to steer, or physically tilt the device, but either choice will be problematic. The buttons are too sensitive, causing vehicles to swerve violently left or right, while the accelerometer isn't sensitive enough, requiring exa?ggerated tilts in order to turn a corner effectively. Coupled with the game's alre??ady hyperactive and unrefined physics, this can lead to some annoying driving indeed, especially when racing against the clock.

Grand Theft Auto III requires a lot of patience and practice to play on an iOS device, because despite claims of optimized controls, there are similar games on the iPhone with far more effective interfaces than the one presented here. However, those games lack the one trump card Grand Theft Auto III has that cannot be beat -- it's Grand Theft Auto III. Despite the dodgy controls and ?the very real frustrations present, this is still one of the most outrageous and entertaining games ever developed, and the sheer novelty of carrying it around inside a phone is worth the price of admission alone.

Once you get used to the annoyances, all the fun of GTA III is still in place. You have to work a little harder for it, but it's all there. All except for cheat codes, unfortunately, which means that you can't spawn a rocket launcher and go crazy like you used to. With a little luck, future updates may bring these back, because let's face it, one of the best things about GTA III is dropping?? a tank from out of the sky and crus?hing cop cars.

For a mere three bucks (Edit: This is a current sale price, regular price is $4.99. Sorry!), Grand Theft Auto III 10 Year Anniversary is very much worth picking up, even if its controls could use an overhaul. Once you get used to its awkward input, the shee??r joy of riding through Liberty City is nigh impossible to deny, and the improved visuals certainly help. At the end of the day, few games are as iconic and amusing as this one, and to carry it in your pocket is somethi??ng truly quite special.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary, Grand Theft Auto III is now available on iOS for $4.99. The game that popularized the sandbox craze is regarded as a classic these days, and while later GTA games would?? replace the silent Claude with increasingly complete protagonists, let's face it, we all love Claude.

More than a straight port, GTA III for iOS h??as updated graphics, with better looking ch?aracters and vehicles as well as a coat of HD paint.

It's amazing to think that a?? game once considered a huge, ambitious project is now available to download onto a mobile phone as if it's no big deal. It's a shame so many "hardcore" gamers are against iOS, because things like this are breathtaking when you step back and think about i??t.

It's like coming back to an old friend. This new trailer for Grand Theft Auto III's 10th anniversary was very nicely done.

As you've likely heard, to commemorate the game’s 10th anniversary, Grand Theft Auto III will be coming to iOS and Android devices this fall. Never would I have imagined back then that we could be playing games with cutscenes, ful??l narrative and dialogue on a phone. Or a tablet.

Being in the future is awesome.

I saw the iOS version Grand Theft Auto III this weekend. It looked great on the iPad 2, but the launch details only list it and the iPhone 4S as compatible devices for the iOS version. What about all the single-core devices out there? No worries, as Kotaku says R??ockstar plans to b?ring the game to "single core iOS devices in the future."

The ??initial launch details also listed some of the newer, higher powered Android devices as compatible. This news could mean that single-core Android device users will see a version later on.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of Grand Theft Auto, Rockstar is bringing the third game to iOS later this fall. They had an early iPad version running on the New York Comic-Con show floor this weekend, and from my short time with it I have to tell you that it looks really good.

The original PS2 version of Grand Theft Auto III was no slouch in the graphics department, but that was a long time ago, and things have changed. For this iPad version the graphics have been upped to HD, bringing this classic up to date. My first impression was that it looked like a brand new game with its clear edges and sha??rp detail. It's definitely one of the better looking iOS games out there already, and it's not even finished yet! Sorry -- they wouldn't let me take pictures. I'm guessing it's high-??end visuals have something to do with the game being limited to the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S so far, though Rockstar says they'll make more device announcements later

This game w??as made for a controller, so getting used to the virtual joystick and action buttons took a bit. They worked as expected. Camera is controlled by screen swiping, which I suspect some won't love. Other contextual controls will pop up when needed, and you'll only need to touch/hold/swipe the screen to use them. For example, car pedals come up in driving segments. They're still working on the control, so we'll hold judgement for something closer to final code.

It would be nice to revisit GTAIII ??in an on-the-go version, so we'?ll look forward to seeing more of this one.

To celebrate its tenth anniversary, Rockstar Games is bringing the classic Grand Theft Auto III to select mobile devices. In addition, a limited edition Claude action figure is available to pre-order right now

GTA III will be restricted to the latest mobiles on the market, only available for the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, Droid X2, HTC Evo 2, LG Optimus 2X, Motorola Atrix, Samsung Galaxy S2, Acer Iconia?, Asus Eee Pad, Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. If your trinket of choice isn't on the list, then no GTA III for you.

The Claude action figure is ??limited to 1,500 pieces and comes courtesy of Sideshow Collectibles. He comes packed with a load of weapons, an alternate prison jumpsuit costume, and a cost of $149.99, which is about average for a Sideshow toy.&n?bsp;

I wish I could justify the expense of the figure, because I really want one. My wife would kill me though. Is it?? worth the gamble?
