GTA Online is an inevitability.

It will always be here, no matter how many games rise and fall around it. While so many other publishers are obsessed with keeping their projects alive, Rockstar has pretty much perfected the art thanks to a tireless community and a perfect decades-long crescendo of the GTA brand. It's so potent that it even steers people away from Rockstar's other active online game: Red Dead Redemption 2.

So it's no surprise that after the big casino update a few weeks ago, it would be getting another content drop. The Rune Zhaba is now live, which is a wacky new off-road vehicle with custom tires. The gist? It can tackle pretty much any terrain in the game, and you can buy it now from Warstock Cache & Carry.

Also GTA Online is offering triple rewards for all freemode events, as well as double payouts for business battles and bunker series matches??. All of this will run through January 8, and you can spin the lucky wheel at the casino to potentially win a car (the Pfister Comet Safari).

A celebration of excess

A single game with staying power is a difficult achievement to obtain in this industry. With dozens of titles launching each week, most of them in the Switch eShop, the spotlight tends to move quickly as new hits surpass the current crop of favorites. It's a process that repeats itself on a yearly, monthly, or even weekly basis. A game will trend on Twitter one day,? ?then it'll be as if it never existed the next.

Few games can buck that trend, can break the wheel. With more than 115 million copies sold worldwide since it launched, Grand Theft Auto V has done just that. Since it debuted on the PS3 and Xbox 360, it's been one of the top 20 selling games every year. And with good reason. Grand Theft Auto V is not only one of the best, classic-styled open-world games ever created, but its companion game, Grand Theft Auto: Online, has evolved into the persistent, crime-ri?dden world fans of the series have wanted.

After writing the rulebook for the open-world genre, Rockstar decided to make some revisions to it for GTAV. Using the power of the then current generation systems, it set out to give players a world with the scale of San Andreas but with details that could? only be provided by an unimaginably large production budget. Though since surpassed by Rockstar's own late-decade efforts, the scale of Los Santos was something to behold on the PS3 and Xbox One. Even when it was dirty it was beautiful, with every neighborhood feeling alive with personality and culture. It is a living, breathing world, one that encapsulates the paradox of the American Dream Rockstar so persistently attempts to mock. And tying that expansive open-world together was a storyline and heist system that broke new grounds for the franchise.

If prior games in the series took their influence from old school gangster movies, V found its inspiration in Hollywood heist films. The Sting, Usual Suspects, The Killing, and many more films shaped the genre and Rockstar didn't shy away from taking generously from these resources. Protagonists Michael and Franklin embodied the type of anti-heroes Rockstar had cultivated in prior games while Trevor was pretty much a stand-in for the more sadistic fans of the series, those who like to turn on cheat codes and just watch the world burn. They had nothing in common, but like any good heist film, that's what made them the perfect partners for the centerpiece of the GTA V experience.

While a majority of the missions found in the game follow the formula Rockstar wrote two decades ago, it's the heists that make GTA V memorable. Sure, the franchise had heists before, but nothing of this caliber. Planning a heist like you were a sadistic Danny Ocean is the most involved mission process the series has seen. Getting a crew together, choosing if you want well-versed criminals to join the team for more money or sticking with newbies to the world of crime for dependability, meant players could experiment with how to pro??????????????????????????ceed with each heist, breaking these missions away from the cookie-cutter tasks that make up the rest of the Los Santos experience.

The past decade was home to many impressive open-world games from the Saints Row series to Ubisoft's uneven Assassin's Creed franchise. Grand Theft Auto V on its own may not be enough to be one of those titles that defined the decade, but the inclusion of Grand Theft Auto Online sets it apart from most of the other open-world games that blew up big over the past 10 years. Where regular GTA titles tied progression to a linear storyline that had a definitive beginning and end, GTA: Online let players loose to make their own fun without e??nd. If you wanted to be a race car driver, you could spend all day mastering Hot Wheels loop-the-loops in the sky. Want to be a professional gambler? As of 2019, you can so long as the mode isn't banned in your state or country. Even a job as menial as a driving instructor is a possibility (and one of the most necessary jobs in the game given how nobody obeys traffic laws). Oh, and there are heists. Lord are there heists.

Though it was grounded at the beginning, GTA: Online has morphed into an impossible amusement park. There are still raids, missions, and street races, but there are also werewolves, rocket cars, and an ugly-ass SUV known as the Freecrawler. Perhaps the defining aspect of GTA Online is that it took the foundation of GTA IV's online mode and turned it into a hang-out game, a way for adult gamers to connect with distant friends and strangers outside of social media chat groups and forum threads. The rise of social gaming is perhaps the most important development of the past 10 years and GTA: Online was at the forefront of it.

The success of Online didn't come without any sacrifices. Rockstar's continued devotion to the game pushed any possible single-player DLC to the wayside. The lack of something as compelling as The Ballad of Gay Tony in the world of GTA V was a point of contention for fans who had no interest in taking their crime sprees online. With V easily being the? most well-written game in the franchise, we're only left to wonder what type of stories could have been, and what type of heists could h??ave been added.

These two companion titles rewrote how Rockstar approached game development. While it put out several titles in the seventh generation of gaming, its output in the eighth generation consisted of mostly ports of its older titles to new hardware. Grand Theft Auto V represented an all-hands-on-deck approach for the company, tying together its various studios worldwide on a single project with Rockstar North taking the lead on Online u??pdates. If it failed or if it only equaled t??he success of its predecessors, it's hard to say what Rockstar would have and could have done.

But Grand Theft Auto V? succeeded more than most people could have anticipated. While many of its sales can no ??doubt be attributed to people rebuying the game for PS4, Xbox One, or Windows PC, it's undeniably been the unstoppable force of the decade.

Crime pays

Rockstar is feeling charitable right now. All the wranglers and six shooters in Red Dead Online are getting a little richer thanks to a big boost to currency gains this weekend. The slumdogs of Los Santos get an equal (and ma?ybe? better!) opportunity to become millionaires.

GTA Online players are ??getting double GTA$ (cash) and RP (essentially XP) this weekend for all sorts of stuff. Contact missions; the Doomsd??ay Finale scenario; the Occupy, Hardest Target, and Juggernaut Adversary modes -- all of these grant twice the rewards through April 24.

There's also an in-game promotion next week that even the most fiscally inept know to take advantage of. Starting on April 25, anyone who owns a biker clubhouse will be gifted GTA$250k. After Hours

Tony Prince, a/k/a Gay Tony, is making the move from Liberty City to Los Santos. Last seen in the GTA IV add-on The Ballad of Gay Tony, he's headed to Grand Theft Auto Online next week as part of the free "After Hour??s" update.

"After Hours" has players running their own nightclub alon??gside Gay Tony. The introductory trailer makes it seem like he's in charge of the neon-drenched atmosphere, the concussive bass-laden ?music, and maintaining a stellar line-up of DJs; you're in charge of running criminal enterprises out of the basement of the club.

Even though Gay Tony still parties like a young man, he'll be 60 at the time "After Hours" takes place. How much longer can he keep up this lifestyle? How much more does he have left in the tank? We'll find out when "After Hours" releases for GTA Online on July 24.

Shocking, I know

Over the last few days while playing GTA Online on PC, a message window was being displayed in-game about the release of Grand Theft Auto VI. It had an official Rockstar logo and everything and made people wonder what was going on. While I'm pretty certain Rockstar is actually developing the next entry in its car stealing simulator, the studio is gearing up to release Red Dead Redemption 2 ?this November. There is no way they would c??annibalize the sales of one game with the release of another in such a short span.

Well, if you needed further clarification about this obvi??ous hoax, Rockstar responded to a fan query? on Twitter with the following statement:

Get the golden gun

Rockstar has a new in-game item that ties its most recent, relevant, and popular games together (sorry LA Noire). John Marston's iconic sidearm is spanning across Red Dead Redemption, GTA Online, and the upcoming Red Dead sequel.

As of today, Rockstar has officially started a new treasure hunt event in GTA Online. It's for Red Dead's double-action revolver. Players can find it in GTA's Los Santos a?nd use the gun to th?eir heart's content.

Proficient use reaps more rewards, though. The revolver has a challenge associated with it for getting 50 headshots on anything. Anyone who completes the challenge earns $250,000 in in-game currency. More importantly, doing it unlocks the gun in Red Dead Redemption 2 on PS4 and Xbox One. (It seems as if everything's funneled thro??ugh Rockstar's Social Club.)

There's no mention of this being a timed event, so it seems like you're free to wait on your six-shootin' as long as you want. But it'll he?lp Marston's ghost rest easy k??nowing that you're thinking of him while terrorizing the fine citizens of Los Santos.

New buildings, missions, and more

Grand Theft Auto Online has been thriving these past four years, an??d today it hosts one of ?its biggest updates yet.

Dubbed "The Doomsday Heist," this free expansion of sorts hosts a new storyline over three acts, which involves billionaire entrepreneur Avon Hertz. As soon as your crew unlocks an underground IAA facility you can partake in the two to four-player crew missions. Rockstar promises three "ruthles????s heists" in this storyline with an "over-the-top" finale, which also involve new weapons and futuristic tech. Orbital cannons are even mentioned specifically.

It's good to see that Rockstar is still supporting Online, especially after the lengthy delay of Heists near its launch??. I'm sure Doomsday isn't the end of Rockstar's massive run.

Blonded

I first discovered Frank Ocean in 2012 after listening to the song "Crack Rock" off his album Channel Orange, a record I've been listening to weekly since. And coincidentally, that's the first song that's being teased for his new GTA radio station.

According to Ocean's Tumblr, "Blonded Los Santos 97.8 FM" is being added to Grand Theft Auto Online, based on his actual Beats radio station, Blonded. Crack Rock is being teased so this will ??have actual Ocean joints, as well as whatever else he decides to curate.

Blonded is likely going to be released alongside of the major Heist update today, so GTA Online players have a lot to be excited for, over four years s??ince the launch of the game no less.

Hillbilly Agenda is like a giant family

Noclip has been low key making some great documentaries recently, including my favorite, the redemption story of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. The channel's latest centers around a tight-knit Grand Theft Auto Online&n?bsp;community called Hillbilly Agend??a, which consists of all sorts of players with different backgrounds, who meet up in person and form a family of sorts.

When Warren "KnoxNerd" Scott came back from the navy, he put his passion for gaming to good use and created a 3,000 square foot gaming location. From there he started playing Red Dead Redemption online and learned about "crews" from family members, before eventually getting into Grand Theft Auto Online and creating his own crew.

He also hosts a giant soiree for his GTA crew Hillbilly Agenda, in Knoxville, Tennessee each year via his friend's gigantic house. This s?hort forty minute video is worth watching as it perfectly encapsulates the phenomenon and the benefits of online communities.

The planning stage was two years

Grand Theft Auto Online is? about to get a brand new heist. Launching next week on December 12, "The Doomsday Heist" will see players attempting to stop the mass destruction of San Andreas by traveling all over the cit?y. You'll be heisting in the streets, in the sea and even inside of Mount Chiliad.

What makes this DLC notable is that it's the first?? new heist in roughly two years. Since Rockstar added heists in 2015, there hasn't been any expansion to the game mode. Whether this is signaling a return t??o Heist DLC is yet to be stated, but at least you'll have a reason to reassemble the crew next week.

Player who?

It seems Rockstar Games have caught wind of the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and added their own take on it in the form of “Motor Wars” in the latest "Smuggler's Run" update for Grand Theft Auto Online (which is available now). This? new game mode they've introduced essentially mimics the mechanics of other battle royale games and will most ?likely continue to secure GTA V's weekly top 10 sales ranks across the world for years to come.

The players?? are broken up into four teams, parachute out of a plane, and a giant kill box periodically shrinks as the game goes on. Players will be able to find various weapons strewn about, as well as explosives, and weaponized v?ehicles to spice things up.

Personally, when I fi?rst began to witness the rise in popularity of PUBG, I remember immediately thinking to myself: “I bet this w??ould be pretty cool in GTA Online.” It seems Rockstar Games thought the exact same thing. I'm just amazed how quick they w?ere able to implement it.

I wonder if Red Dead Redemption 2's multiplayer will have a similar mode as well? A wild west variant to PUBG just sounds like a money-printing idea if you ask ?me.

New features include crime, vehicles and shooting

Do you remember Trevor's paranoid neighbour, Nervous Ron, from Grand Theft Auto V? I personally don't, but that game feels like many mo??ons ago??.

Anyway Ron will be returning to the world of GTA: Online next week as part of  new update, Smuggler's Run (a cute throwback to the Rockstar-created 2000 PS2 game, no doubt). The update will see players team up with the twitchy one to build a trafficking empire. The emphasis will be on flight, with various aircraft, from World War bombers to sleek Ultralights, being both available and customisable.

Rockstar also took the opportunity to announce an upcoming revamped race mode, Transform, which will see you race players across land, sea and air, with?? your vehicle changing across the respective checkpoints. This mode is expected to hit in Autumn.

Rockstar have really squeezed every drop out of this release, with "Shark" in-game currency cards making Grand Theft Auto V one of the world's most consistently high-grossing properties. With Red Dead Redemption 2 penciled in for 2018, it will be interesting to see if Rockstar continue to pump out features and content for the GTA: Online world. Clearly it would be remiss of them not to at this?? r??ate.

This is the real heist

Nearly four years into its life cycle, Grand Theft Auto Online refuses to die. In ?fact, it's only getting stronger. Its continued success comes to the surprise of almost everyone -- including the parent company that it's practically printing money for.

Take-Two Interactive released its first quarter 2018 investor's report today, and it's GTA Online that's leading the charge. Year-over-year revenue grew 34 percent, up to $418.2 million from $311.6 million. Take-Two points directly at digitally-delivered revenue for the spike, as that segment is up nearly $100 million over 2017's first fiscal quarter. The games responsible for pushing this trend are cited as: GTA Online, Grand Theft Auto V, NBA 2K17, WWE SuperCard, and WWE 2K17.

It's worth noting that Take-Two neglected to outline any specific sales figures for any individual game, so it's tough to quantify exactly how well GTA Online is doing. (Confusingly, other outlets ran that GTA Online had its "best quarter ever," a claim that can't be substantiated by this report.) But, this statement is telling: "Due to the continued success of Grand Theft Auto Online and other factors, [T??ake-Two] has determined that it is necessary to extend the life of ??;Grand Theft Auto V and Grand Theft Auto Online."

It also feels pertinent to point out that Take-Two didn't release any new games during the last quarter. Despite the lull in launches, it's raising its forecasted annual net revenue by $100 million and net income by $28 million. To everyone's surprise, GTA Online isn't facing the decline that usually impacts aging games. As long as it continues to make money hand over fist, Take-Two has made it clear that GTA Online isn't going anywhere.

Move over Micro Machines!

The original Grand Theft Auto and its first sequel employed a different viewpoint to the games we have today. Instead of being third-person, they went for a top down view due to hardware limitations of the time. PC's and consoles weren't able to render massive cities with huge draw distances, so limiting the view to only the gr??ound cut down on the need for a skybox and any verticality in level design. It was a compromise that gave Rockstar the confidence it needed to keep pushing themselves to do better.

While some people prefer that style of game, the only other GTA title to even attempt it was Chinatown Wars on the DS, PSP and iOS/Android. Rockstar basically moved on from that style and relegated it to the past. That is, they were content doing that until this new expansion for Grand Theft Auto Online got a surprise announcement.

Launching on April 25 (just a few days after the long anticipated return of Micro Machines), Tiny Racers sees the cars shrunk down and the viewpoint shifted to make for some childlike toybox shenanigans. Players will hav??e access to various courses with pow?er-ups, stunt maneuvers and head-to-head competition. In all honesty, this looks better than heists to me.

The update will only be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. GTA Online has long left the confines of last gen consoles.

Remember that game

Anyone still play GTA Online? I hop on every so often to see what's up, but if you've quit at some point due to rampant cheating, know that Rockstar is cracking down even further on ill??-gotten cash ho??rdes.

As of this week, a massive purge has occurred, where in order to "keep the gameplay environment fair," ill?egitimate cash has been removed from players. Note that this is basically a slap on the wrist as you won't get banned for it, and you'll get to keep any cash you've purchased -- it merely gets rid of the cheat money. Which, according to players who are still active, includes exploits and glitches, not hacks.

All told it's great that they're doing something, but this is a pretty soft stance compared to other publishers.

Brace yourself - there’s a load of “massive, feature-rich” content heading to Grand Theft Auto Online. 

In a recent update, Rockstar stated there’s “a lot more to come in 2016” in the “weeks and months ahead”, including more in-game specials and bonuses, “such as the Versus Missions Week and Co??ntact Missions Week – with opportunities to get coveted vehicles, weapons and other items on sale, and reap bonus RP and GTA$”.

The developer states that there will be a wide variety of different conten??t across a range of different modes and missions. There’ll also be Double RP Playlists, new Adversary Modes, chances for bonus "GTA$," big discounts on vehicles, properties and “lots more happening regularly”, including new locations for In and Out.

Rockstar has generated over half a billion - yes, billion - dollars through microtransactions on Grand Theft Auto Online.

The news was revealed as part of ex-Rockstar North’s president Leslie Benzie’s $150m lawsuit against the studio. 

Grand Theft Auto V’s ??multiplayer mode is free to play (??well, once you have the base game, anyways), and it seems people are happy to fork out for add-ons courtesy of the various microtransactions.

The lawsuit states that “GTA Online has the potential to achieve the greatest profit margin of any game created in the GTA franchise," (via Gamespot), chiefly because there a “??nearly 100 percent profit marg?in” on these vanity items. 

In contrast, we've spent "only" $1.5 million on microtransactions in Halo 5: Guardians.

So don't expect a new GTA game just yet

If you thought the hype around Grand Theft Auto V - and specifically, the multiplayer component GTA Online - was over, think again.

Addressing an earnings briefing (via Gamespot), CEO of Rockstar’s publisher Ta??ke-Two said that even two years on, players continued to be “highly engaged” with the multiplayer game.

Though he didn’t back up the statement with concrete figures, CEO Strauss Zelnick said the game had it’s?? highest ever period of active players - and revenue - over the rece?nt holiday period.

Zelnick attributes the success of this “s??ustained engagement” to Rockstar’s free add-on content and plentiful in-game events, stating the Hallo?ween and Christmas update, along with Lowrides and Executives and Other Criminals, were “key contributors to the game’s record results.”

Server functionality remains 'limited'

PlayStation 4 servers for Grand Theft Auto Online has been offline for several hours.

Rockstar's status page acknowledges on the official site that the issue persists, but does not give an indication as to why the servers are down, or when full functionality may return - troubling news for PS4 players who have daily and mon?thly objectives to maintain.

All other platforms are up and operating.

Snowballs and Beast vs. Slasher mode

Today is Christmas Eve for those who celebrate the holiday, and many folks are preparing to see their families and drink entirely too much egg nog. They'll also get into political argum?ents, Uncle Billy will get embarrassingly drunk, and at least one person will practice their poker face when they unwrap a gift that they're obviousl?y upset with.

Instead of the usual Christmas Eve antics, you could also spend some time revisiting a freshly snow-covered Los Santos in Grand Theft Auto Online. Snowball fights have made their glorious return, and all players will receive both a Santa outfit and a Fireworks?? Launcher with five rockets. There will also be more gifts if you choose to play on Christmas day.

PC, PS4, and Xbox One players get a few extra stars on top of the tree, as it were. A new Adversary mode called Beast vs. Slasher is now playable. As a Beast, you must flee from the Slashers using super speed, temporary invisibility, and Hulk-style jumps. Slashers are split into three classes: Demolitions, Heavy, and Assault. They get to use the regular weapons from GTA Online in addition to Railguns and ?T??hermal Vision. 

The Declasse Tampa vehicle is also available, but it's hard to get excited for a car when thermal vision and super powers are on the table. As of now, the??re??'s no date marking the end of this festive update. Better jump in while there's still snow left to ball!

Ahem. Sorry. I watched Halloween 3: Season of the Witch last night and that jingle is stuck in my head. Also, what an odd movie. I like the idea of Halloween becoming an anthology series before Season of the Witch's failure brought about the return of Michael Myers, but I don't think doing it with your third iteration helps, nor does the name, wh?ich is so dang non-descript and seemingly unrelated to this weird sci-fi flick. At least the doc gets it in.

Anyways! Grand Theft Auto V is kind of ancient history for me -- it's two years old already. But Rockstar is still doing Grand Theft Auto Online stuff and damn, the Hallo?ween-inspired Slasher mode looks pretty great.

One player runs around with a shotgun, the rest just have melee-capable flashlights that could just as easily give away their position as help them meander about. The flashlight crew needs to survive, the hunter needs to pump them full of led lest the tables be turned and one of the survivors get a gun, and everyone wears spooky Halloween masks.

Next week, certain areas of Grand Theft Auto Online&nbsp;will look less like societal mayhem and more like a west coast rap video. Car after car will be lined up with owners standing proudly next to thei?r virtual popped hood.

The Lowriders add-on brings, well, lowriders to GTA Online. A bunch of vehicle customizations will be available (yes, including hydraulics) ??to deck out your '64 Impalas. Once properly outfitted, players can put their whip on display in a car show.

But, Lowriders isn't just car?? mods. It also has new mission?s, a fourth purchasable property, three new Adversary modes, and more. But bumpin' down the street is a big part of it, too.

Curiously, this DLC won't be available on legacy consoles; it's only coming to PC, PS4, and Xbox One. It'll be added as an automatic update on October 20. Maybe spend the weekend with "Still D.R.E." on repeat to get you in the right mindset.

Temporary characters = permanent chaos

A new PC exploit may enable banned players to return to GTA Online anonymously.

A modder on the forum se7ensins [currently offline] claims that Rockstar's plans to reintroduce temporary characters into the game may be exploitable with new code scripting -- an exploit similar to the troubles in last-gen GTA Online, too.

“You can create disposable characters, cheat cash and stats and troll other players as much as you’d like and it will not be saved or recorded – this means it’s basically a way to play anonymously,” said LondonTown2004 (via VG24/7).

Other exploits potentially in the reach of cheaters include bypassing bans, Bad Sport st????????????????????????????atus, Cheater Pool status and mic-mutes, free from banning even if you're caught.

The modder adds that even if Rockstar fixes the issue immediately, a modder need only revert to a version before the u??pdate and still be able to cheat in-game.

“GTA Online will become one big playground wi??thout Rockstar Games dictating what we can and cannot do without being punished,” they added.

Rockstar has released a new PC patch to address the framerates issues plaguing Grand Theft Auto V Online since the release on the Ill-Gotten Gains DLC.

"We also received some reports linking decreased performance when using Story Mode mods to TU?? 1.28," said Rockstar. "As mentioned previously, we are not actively targeting players using mods in Story Mode, nor are we explicitly implementing protections against them in-game.”

The 91 MB patch is available now but if you download it, be mindful that it may negatively affect any story mode mods (including that kick-ass Just?? Cause 2-esque grappling hook).

Our primary focus is on protecting GTA Online against modifications that could give players an unfair advantage, disrupt gameplay, or cause griefing. H??owever, as a reminder, mods are still unauthorized and as such, Title Update??s may cause Story Mode mods to behave in unexpected ways because they are not supported or tested, and players run them at their own risk.
