The best PS5 single-player games make the platform one of the greatest consoles to own today. With exclusives like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and God of War Ragnarok, there are many outstanding experiences on the beloved system. While it's sad that some double-A exclusives like Gravity Rush 2 and LittleBigPlanet 3 have fizz??led from Pla??yStation's priority list, there are still grand single-player campaigns that will take your breath away. Marvel’s Spider-Man series

If you're a big comic book fan or just like action games in general, you can't go wrong with Marvel's Spider-Man series from Insomniac Games. Web slinging feels the best it's ever been, evolving the system from the beloved Spider-Man 2 PS2 game and letting you do tricks in the air. Boss battles are immensely important and truly up the stakes of the storyline. Finally, this Marvel version of New York is so detailed as you're beating up foes across the stunning map with a glorious battle system. The follow-up based on Miles Morales is also stellar, perhaps outdoing the original game, with an elevated battle system and intense, drama-filled story. Now's a good time to get into the series as Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is getting a standalone release on PS5.

God of War series

If you love single-player games on PS5, you owe it to yourself to play the Norse God of War series. I personally found the PS2 and PS3 entries hard to get into. The action gets repetitive, there are oddly placed puzzles, and the harsh overtones of Kratos' personality repelled me. However, this new reboot-quel with Kratos as a father is a game changer. The way Kratos evolves past his violent origins and grows as a person is refreshing. Both of these games act as a fantastic coming-of-age story for his son Atreus as well. The combat takes a slower, more methodical third-person approach. The axe feels satisfying to wield, and the powe??rs Kratos attains over the course of the series make you feel strong. There are plenty of cinematic bosses that amaze you too.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart hosts some of the best PS5 graphics, bar none. Reviewers often say this series looks like a Pixar film for a good reason, and I ??agree. But it's not just a tour-de-force of graphics, however. This sci-fi game features two engaging platforming heroes trying to save the multiverse from Dr. Nefarious and company. Most of the guns on offer pack a punch, like the Shatterbomb, while other weapons turn your enemies into cute objects like pixels with the Pixelizer. The storyline is also impactful and gets surprisingly emotional.

The Last of Us Part I

Talking about emotional stories, The Last of Us Part I will leave you weeping. This post-apocalyptic has you play as Joel, a father who lost their child, and connects with a girl named Ellie as they face the harsh zombie-filled environment. Yes, they're called the Infected (not zombies, per se), but what makes them unique is how they have to? listen to the environment to know where you are. It gets creepy as you have to slowly work your way through dark hallways to succeed. Otherwise, they'll come rampaging toward you, and you need your wits to shoot them in the correct spots. What's even scarier, perhaps, are the people you meet along the way, and the storyline gets very heavy as Joel and Elli?e try to keep themselves alive. It's one of the best PS5 single-player games because of how intense it gets. I haven't even gotten into the impressive graphics, either.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is a tough S.O.B., but the grind is well worth your time as you defeat tough bosses with a big smile on your face and scale across a dangerous fantasy landscape. I've personally never connected with a Souls game, but for some reason, Elden Ring grabbed me. The open world allows you to explore, challenge other bosses, and level up at your own speed. You can find mysterious areas naturally, get awesome loot, and then attempt to defeat a tough boss once more. That game loop is absolutely engrossing and far better than the linear Souls style as you finally have options. You're not stuck with one boss over and over and over agai??n. The world-building is also a strength of the game, with gorgeous scenery and architecture to gaze at.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

I'll say it. This game is better than the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The characters are written so well and are different enough from the Hollywood versions. There's a fantastic character arc for Eidos Montreal's interpretation of Starlord, and you truly feel the connection between all of the members of the group. The script is also quite funny. The third-person shooting gameplay ??is thrilling as you're zooming around foes with your jet boots and instructing the squad on what to do. Bosses also feel like a big deal in this game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade

If you need an RPG to play on your PS5, Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade is ready for you. With spectacular visuals, fast-paced yet strategic combat, and an engrossing storyline, this game will grab you from beginning to end. The music is also phenomenal. The Intergrade edition comes with a ch??apter that introduces Yuffie into the mix that ?you can't play on the PS4.

Astro’s Playroom

Want a game that the kids (or your inner child) can play? Astro's Playroom is a wonderful pick. It fully uses the DualSense controller's functionality, such as the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, to make a memorable experience. The platforming is some of the best the PS5 has to offer, as well. Additionally, it references great moments in PlayStation's long history. The best part is that Astro's Playroom is free to download!

Resident Evil 4 Remake

This is an almost perfect horror game. Stunning graphics, a creepy environment, an epic story, tough bosses, and stellar third-person shooting gameplay. The puzzles are also a treat in Resident Evil 4 Remake. There's not much else to say other than?? pick this game up.

Horizon series

While the sequel, Forbidden West, covers familiar ground in terms of its gameplay, it's still a tour-de-force of graphics. The unique robot-filled post-apocalyptic setting is striking. You also have some stellar performances by Ashley Burch (Aloy) and the rest of the cast. The storyline is also intriguing as we learn bits and pieces about why our civilization failed many years ago. Horizon: Zero Dawn is an incredible open-world game as you upgrade your gear and defeat titanic robots along the way, strategically breaking their parts until they fall. Forbidden West is still impressive, but to me, fails to capture my interest ?as much as the? original.

Honorable Mentions

There are some other stand-out titles that didn't quite make the Best PS5 single-player games list. One of them that is likely mentioned in the comments is Ghost of Tsushima. It presents a gorgeous open world inspired by the Mongolian invasion era of Japan. However, it strikes me more as a PS4 game rather than a PS5-specific entry for this list. It has received a remaster with additional content set on Iki Island. Additionally, there's Returnal. It's gained a large fanbase since its release, but can arguably be considered a co-op game, following one of its post-game updates.

5-minute warning

Edios Interactive is warning that Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cloud Version is being temporarily delisted from the Switch eShop starting on February 27, 2023 at 1??0:59pm EST. Wow, that's really short notice. This is due to a "publisher transition," and it's expected to be back up on April 1, 2023.

The announcement goes on to say that if you already own the game, you will be able to continue to play ??uninterrupted while the transition takes place. However, if you've deleted the gam??e, they recommend that you re-download and archive it to ensure that you can still access it.

This isn't super-great for anyone who was holding off on purchasing the game on Switch, but it's not the most profoundly bad news. A little more warning would have been nice, but at least the publishers are being upfront about how long the downtime is expected to bad, and if you already own it you won't have your access to it disrupted. I can't really editorialize beyond that, since I definitely don't have a horse in this race.

To reiterate, you have until 10:59pm EST tonight to purchase Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: Cloud Version. If you miss that window, you'll h?ave to wait u?ntil April 1, 2023.

I got the music in me

A few months ago, the Recording Academy announced it was adding five new categories to its annual Grammy Awards, including a new category solely for soundtracks to video games and other interactive media. A video game grammy award has been a long time coming, given how the medium has produced some of the most outstanding musical scores of the past 20 years. Just yesterday, The Game Awards announced its top picks for Best Score with Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Metal Hellsinger, Elden Ring, God of War Ragnarock, and A Plague Tale: Requiem making the cut. None of those games are up for the inaugural video game soundtrack Grammy, but that probably has to do with release scheduling and other requirements that m??ight not have been met.

Instead, the five games nominated for Score Soundtrack for Video Ga?mes and Other Interactive M??edia are:

• Aliens: Fireteam Elite (Composer: Austin Wintory)
• Assassin's Creed Valhalla: Dawn of Ragnarok (Composer: Stephanie Economou)
• Call of Duty: Vanguard (Composer: Bear McCreary)
• Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy (Composer: Richard Jacques)
• Old World (Composer: Christopher Tin)

Your guess is as good as mine as to what Old World is, but there are few recognizable names on that list. Bear McCreary is perhaps best known across the industry for his work scoring films like Godzilla: King of the Monsters, as well as video games like God of War and God of War Ragnarok. Austin Wintory is also a name you should know, given his work on titles like Journey and The Banner Saga trilogy.

Grab your Awesome Mix Tape

A wicked bit of news for Game Pass subscribers this morning, as Xbox has revealed that Square Enix's critically acclaimed comic book adventure Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy will be?? joining the paid subscription?? service later in March, leading a charge of new titles headed to console, PC, and cloud.

Seven titles in all were revealed today, all of which will be rolling out on Xbox Game Pass over the month of March. Today sees the addition of immersive adventure on land, sea, and air, as Okomotive's Far: Changing Tides sets sail while Microsoft Flight Simulator takes to the skies. These are not the only additions to the library this week, as Square Enix's dramatic adventure Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII arrives on console and PC on Thursday, March 3.

Come March 10, four more titles will be added, led by the aforementioned Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. Joining Star-Lord and his long-suffering pals will be Annapurna Interactive's Kentucky Route Zero, Skyhook Games' surprisingly enjoyable Lawn Mowing Simulator, and 1P2P's adventure brawler Young Souls, which will be l??aunching?? on Xbox Game Pass and looks pretty darn funky.

As for the titles that will be waving bye-bye, March 15 will see NieR: Automata, The Surge 2, Phogs!, and Torchlight III leave the service. Please, no objections

Well, then. 2021 is over. A series of 365 days that decided, "what if we did 2020, again?" It was the remaster we did not need. But all that sai??d, in spite of the continued effects of the pandemic and other nonsense, it was a good year too—one with good times, fun stories, and a smattering of new games to call my favorites of the year.

When I ran down the list of what I've played last year, I realized how all over the place it's been. There weren't a ton of tentpole games like there have been in recent years. Maybe Halo Infinite, but Xbox's heavy hitter launched a little late in the year for me to feel like I know where I'm at with it. I got to dive back into the Mass Effect series with the Legendary Edition, an honorable mention for this list; I didn't include it because it was my umpteen??th time playing through the whole thing, but I'm gl?ad those games have a unified home now.

2021 was another year of stellar indies. 2021 was a year of surprises, even in the AAA space. 2021 was the year of revivals, group plays, and long, late-night visual novel reading binges. Heck, by the end of it, I was even into Final Fantasy XIV. Never say never.

It was also the first year of my words finding a home here at Destructoid, and I just want to take a brief moment to thank all of y'all. If you've been hanging around in the comments, reading our work, and supporting the cool stories, interviews, reviews, and silly blogs we did here in 2021, thanks a ton!

Well, let's get this going? Here are some of my favorite games from the year 2021, in no p??articular order except the ??final one.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy

Holy flark, I did not see this one coming. I had admittedly written off Guardians of the Galaxy after the launch of Marvel's Avengers, and the Guardians aren't exactly my usual cup of tea when it comes to Marvel content anyways. Something about its Mass Effect Andromeda?-ness appealed to me though, and after hearing enough people showe?r surprised praise on it, I gave it a shot.

What a pleasant, surprisingly heartfelt, and genuinely funny game. Honestly, Guardians of the Galaxy could still use a tune-up on the combat side. But the massive appeal of Eidos Montreal's Marvel journey is its writing and its characters. They got me to genuinely care about Drax, Gamora, and Rocket, with some genuinely fantastic writing at times. And all the barks! It was a good year for combat barks. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was the surprise I did not expect this year.

Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

After Nier Automata put the Nier series on my radar, I was very, very eager to see what its predecessor was like. And Nier Replicant did not disappoint. Though maybe a little bit more tedious than Automata, the modernizations of this year's Replicant rema?ster went a long way toward ?making an old game very fun to play through again and again.

It was also great to see additional ties made to Automata with some added content. Both games serve as halves of a whole, to me; Replicant can gut-punch you about something, then hit you again in Automata, or vice versa. I'm curious to see what's next for Yoko Taro and the crew behind these games, and especially eager to see how the heck Nier plays out inside a critically acclaimed MMORPG. But Replicant felt like I was tying off a loose end of gaming, mining the depths of sadness and despair as I ??went.

The Forgotten City / Inscryption

This one's a two-parter, and I'll explain why: earlier this year, I wrote about my ne?wfound joy in playi?ng games with a group over Discord. Since I was young, I've always enjoyed the many-people, one-controller way of playing certain games. It doesn't work for everything, but it can ??make some experiences really click.

In the driver's seat portion of this entry, The Forgotten City was a wonder to pick apart. In a year of time loop games offering all kinds of approaches to mystery and narrative, The Forgotten City stands above the pack. It's such a concise, contained loop that still finds so much space to work in. It waxes on and on about philosophy and history, with so much detail and care put into framing the story at hand within the world at large. And the revea?ls are still just incredible.

On the flip-side, Inscryption is the game I still haven't played myself, but have back-seated through multiple friends. It's a refreshing take on the deck-building genre popularized by games like Slay the Spire and Monster Train. But it's also not just a good deck-builder; it's a good mystery, a good adventure, a good puzzle game, and oh so much more. I've been a fan of developer Daniel Mullins for a few years now, a??nd it's been great to see him ge??t so much recognition for the kinds of games he does oh-so-well.

Before Your Eyes

Honestly, I feel like I got this take out best a little while ago. Before Your Eyes is simply the one game from this year that I think everyone, and I mean everyone, should play.

In the time it takes to watch a modern movie, Before Your Eyes takes you through a life, one blink at a time. The way that developer GoodbyeWorld Games uses the blinking mechanic is so simple at first and becomes so clever as the story goes on. It's really an experience that I th??ink anyone and everyone should try at least o??nce. Get a webcam, hook it up, and experience one of the most genuinely moving games of the year.

Dungeon Encounters

Sometimes a game shows up and it is exactly what you needed, despite being something you'd never think to ask for in the first place. Dungeon Encounters feels experimental. It feels fresh and new. It's like getting to see the results of an internal game jam, only it's coming from the minds behind some of Final Fantasy's best.

The minimalist approach can seem sparse?? at first, but it really lets you fill in the spaces as you go. The deeper into the dungeon you go, the less it feels like a barren, unfinished game world, and the more it feels like a dive into a virtual tabletop. Its battle system is so brilliant and twists on itself in interesting ways. And the way systems and menus intertwine creates such a compelling experience of building and managing not just a party, but a whole company of adventurers. Everyone remembers their first Petrified journeyer, or when they discovered how?? to recruit more members.

I truly hope Dungeon Encounters is a? sign of more to com??e from Square Enix. More offbeat, interesting games like this from big publishers, please!

Life is Strange: True Colors

I've fallen a bit behind on Life is Strange. I loved the first season but never got around to the others. I think by the time Life is Strange 2 was releasing, I was burned out on the episodic model. One of the smartest things Life is Strange: True Colors does is keep the episodic structure, b??ut deliver them all?? at once. You know, like what streaming services used to do.

The other smartest thing it does is introduce Alex Chen, the heart and soul of True Colors. Between the incredible voice acting and really spot-on motion capture, Alex just feels like a relatable, endearing protagonist that carries the weight of the small-town mystery so well. Deck Nine really found a winner in the small-town story of True Colors, and it's givi??ng me hope that more adventure games from the episodic era can keep it going into the f??uture.

Gnosia

Going into 2021, Gnosia was already on my radar. Its announcement at a winter Nintendo Indie World showcase was so exciting because I'd heard whispers about this game from a small studio in Japan that was making the rounds, one of the last Vita exclusives making its mark and now finally coming to Switch. And to me, Gnosia did not disappoint.

Gnosia is what I loved about old Flash dating sims, mixed with modern rogue-lite narrative ideas. It's another looping game, only this one has you getting stronger run over run, a??ble to sway debates, and discern impostors at a glance. And all the while, you get smarter too, learning more about these characters. Who they are, their preferred method of verbal warfare, and what they're hiding about the predicament you're all in.

If I had to pick the most overlooked game of the year, it's Gnosia. It's also decidedly not going to be everyone's cup of tea; I have a feeling this is one from 2021 that will have video essays made about it years from now. It's as much a game to analyze and dive deep into as it is to play in the moment. But it really did so many things that took me absolutely by surprise. And what a true ending, too. Gnosia is the little indie you shouldn't overlook.

Wildermyth

Speaking of small indie projects that up-ended my world, Wildermyth is both a game I can't yell about enough and a game I'm excited to see keep growing. Its melding of XCOM-like tactics and D&D narrative, with a hint of overworld management, might seem a bit de??nse. But it all works in conjunction to make a tabletop campaign come to ??life before your eyes, with procedurally generated engines driving the story behind it.

Wildermyth is, to put it bluntly, an engine for building myths and legends. Every campaign is a new story, and a new opportunity to see a humble farmer called to greatness. And then turned into a part-crow wizard with a penchant for archery. Or a stealthy huntress able to set enemies ablaze with her hands. Or a warrior, warm and cheerful among friends, slowly fading away thanks to the stone that pierced her heart. These are all stories that Wildermyth served to me on a silver platter.

The team at Worldwalker Games LLC has been doing a good job at updating Wildermyth too, adding new events and options. And it has Steam Workshop support, where the modding ??scene is only growing. This game has a lot of potential to become even more in the years to come, and?? I can't wait to see it happen.

Tales of Arise

This was the revival the Tales series needed. Tales of Arise isn't just a show of force for Bandai Namco, putting in a si??gnificant budget and graphical upgrade compared to previous entries. But it scales up ??without losing its soul in the process.

Characters still loudly declare DEMON FANG and call out long incantations in the heat of battle, a symphony of special moves and responses. The story is grand and moving, yet there are still so many wonderful skits to uncover. Cooking is still here! And the cast is a genuine all-timer lineup of Tales party members.

Tales of Arise ultimately falls prey to some of the series' known shortcomings too. Its last act sags a good deal, and there are still odd spikes in levels and one very annoying recurring villain. But despite the falters, some of my favorite moments this year were seeing the animations for Boost Strikes over and over. The Boost moves felt like the glue for Tales of Arise, bringing the party together and really making fights feel like an all-out brawl. The horizon is very, very bright for the Tales series, and that's a good feeling.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles

When I finished the final case in The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, I knew two things. One, I needed a ??moment to ju??st breathe and take it all in. And two, there was no way this game wouldn't be on my end-of-the-year list.

I've been a fan of Phoenix Wright for a while, from the original trilogy up through the newer games. And as much as I love Phoenix, Apollo, Athena, and the crew, Great Ace Attorney is a breath of fresh air. No high-tech mechanisms or spirit channeling—the focus is solely on some basic forensics and deductions. And oh, the deductions. ??Herlock Sholmes and Ryunosuke Naruhodo doing the dance of deduction is such a treat.

The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles benefits greatly from being two games packed into one. And where I can see how fans wouldn't like the cliffhanger and obviously unanswered threads of the first game leading into the second, as a duo they are nigh-unstoppable. The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is a ten-case powerhouse that weaves threads and stories throu??ghout its entire run, building up to huge showdowns in court with honor, reputation, legacy, and even lives on the line.

This is the game I'd hand to anyone looking to get into the Ace Attorney series. It's a lengthy one, but so, so worth your time. ??And there's no doubt it's my favorite game I've played this year.

Colorful comic adventure jets off October 26

Square Enix has released the PC specs for its incoming comic book epic Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy revealing, among??st other tech facts, that PC players will need to find a meaty 150GB of free?? HDD space for the install.

[Update: In the "last stages of optimizing the final game," the file size will now be "approximately 80 GB at launch," according to Eidos Montreal.]

The weighty file size exceeds that of many other AAA PC titles, though is thankfully still smaller than that of Activision's Call of Duty series �which currently weighs in at around 240GB. Still, for a linear, single-player adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy's space requirements are pretty eyebrow-raising, especially when huge titles such as IO Interactive's Hitman have actually managed to reduce their footprint. Essentially, this ?is just the way of gaming in the new age. Hopefully, in time, developers will find better compression techniques �as titles are only set to grow in size in the coming years.

You can check out the full Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy PC specs below, ahead of its October 26 launch. I have it on good authority that both the PlayStati?on and Xbox editions of the game have a smaller install size.

'No Microtransactions,' says Square Enix

We're still a good fortnight away from the release of Square Enix's newest Marvel Comics adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy, but that hasn't stopped the publisher from dropping the title's "launch" trailer, which sees our?? ragtag mob of unlikely heroes preparing to do battle with some of the baddest dudes and ??dudettes of the outer reaches.

To the tune of Motley Crue's excellent "Kickstart My Heart," we see Star-Lord, Drax, Gamora, Rocket, and, of course, plant pal Groot as they lay a severe smackdown from pillar to post, coast to coast. The action-heavy trailer highlights the team-based combat of Guardians of the Galaxy, with players controlling our boy Quill and micromanaging the actions of his compatriots. The trailer ends with rapid-fire cuts of some of the characters set to put in an appearance over the course of the story, including beautiful empath Mantis, the Grand Unifier Raker, and Cosmo �with a final tease confirming the appearance of the Guardians' part-time enemy and long-time r?unning bu??ddy, Adam Warlock.

Developed by Eidos Montreal, Guardians of the Galaxy certainly looks to be a vibrant, chaotic, and literally colorful adventure. It has the potential to be a rip-roaring time, provided that it captures that charisma and excitement of the GOTG brand. Square Enix has been parping its horns about the title's lack of online requirements, DLC, and microtransactions �but, frankly, you don't get the make that promis??e anymore, fellas. I put less stock ?in hearing that from Square as I would hearing it from Agatha Harkness.

Square Enix has dropped a fresh cinematic for its upcoming comic-book adventure Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, currently in development for PlayStation, PC, Xb??ox, and Ninte?ndo Switch platforms. The new video spotlights one of the many villains our misfit rogues will battle while on their epic journey, the almighty Grand Unifier Raker.

Grand Unifier Raker �also known as Cardinal Raker �is the Head Cardinal of a sinister prophecy known as the Universal Church of Truth. Raker serves under the mysterious and all-powerful "Matriarch" who, (in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic) ordered the Guardians' death following the destruction of a Church of Truth temple on one of their typically bombastic jaunts. Raker will blindly follow the Matriarch's bidding, at any cost, thy will be done of the Church of Truth. "The Promise" must be? kept.

The new cinematic does not offer much in the way of storytelling, and no gameplay whatsoever, but it seems more likely that Square Enix and developer Eidos Montreal are just demonstrating that the new game will remain true to the characters, events, and worlds of the Guardians of the Galaxy comic, rather than the recent movies, hopefully pleasing die-hard Marvel fans. I'm still not quite sold on this release myself, but I am intrigued and am looking forward to hearing more about the strange encounters ?that await our zero heroes in the f?uture.
