Shrunken Stealth Action

Kalypso Media has announced that Yippee Entertainment's remaster of classic PC stealth title Commandos 2 will come crawling through the bushes and onto Nintendo Switch on December 4, foll??owing on from its previous release on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Commandos 2 HD Remaster features all of the strategic action from Pyro Studios' 2001 release Commandos 2: Men of Courage, revamped with improved visuals, a new interface, and an overhauled control scheme. Players guide ?a small squad of military specials on ??a series of assassination, theft, espionage, and sabotage missions deep in enemy territory.

Outnumbered and outgunned, players must rely on expert planning, on-the-spot adaptation, and each squad member's various skills in order to pu??ll off the perfect operation and get out from behind enemy lines unharmed. It's no picnic, and notoriously one of the trickiest and most intense stealth titles ever released. You can check out a new trailer for the Switch release below.

It should be noted that the remaster removes all references to the Nazis, all depictions of the swastika, and all depictions of the Japanese "Imperial Sun" insignia from the campaign. Kalypso Media has stated that it v?oluntarily took the decision to remove these elements, stating that "We do not want to encourage racism, discrimination or exclusion ??with our games."

Fight the Power

Oddworld Inhabitants Inc. continues in its quest to bring the classic Oddworld adventure series to Switch. As previously noted by the ESRB back in January, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee is next in line for the Nintendo p??latform, and will launch digitally in May.

Munch's Oddysee is the second release in the "Oddworld Quintology," beginning with 1997 PlayStation release Abe's Oddysee. When the Vykkers st??art harvesting hapless Gabbits for the eggs and other organs, one such Gabbit - th?e titular Munch - decides its time to fight back. Utilising a rusted wheelchair, and accompanied by original hero Abe, Munch embarks upon a quest to take down the Vykkers' airborne fortress and liberate his species from their clutches.

Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee for Nintendo Switch will feature HD visuals and 60 FPS gameplay, but otherwise seems to be a direct port of the original 2001 release. Munch's Oddysee will launch digita?lly on May 14, with a physical release to follow later in the year.

In the meantime, Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD is available now on Nintendo Switch.

Monster Munch

At the start of the year, developer Oddworld Inhabitants announced that, alongside the recently-released Stranger's Wrath HD, two further classic Oddworld adventures would be making their appearance?? on the Nintendo Switch.

Thanks to the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB), it seems that we now know the identity of one of these titles. Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD has just recently re??ceived a fresh "T for Teen" rating, all but confirming the 2016 PS3/PC remaster is headed to the Nintendo console, no doubt with additional features ala Stranger's Wrath HD.

Released back in 2001, Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee was the second chapter in the "Oddworld Quintology," following on from 1997 PlayStation release Abe's Oddysee. It tells the story of a small Gabbit named Munch, whose species is being ha??rvested by the brutal Vykkers for their eggs and other organs. Escaping from a laboratory, Munch teams up with Abe on a mission to take?? down the Vykkers and destroy their airborne fortress.

While there has been no official confirmation of Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee HD for Switch from the developer as of yet, this new rating, combined with the aforementioned plans of further HD ports, makes the release a sure thing. We will keep yo??u informed when we hear an offici??al announcement.

I remember trying to play Oddworld: Abe's Odyssey back on PS1. I totally didn't get it lol. I couldn't figure out the gameplay, got frustrated, and wound up going back to Blasto or something. As a result, I never really got into the Oddworld series.? Pathetic, I know, ?but look -- I was 10 when it came out. I just didn't have the patience for it.

Well, here's my chance to atone for my sins by giving you the chance to check out one of the series' most lauded titles! Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath HD? just h?it Switch, so we're giving some copies away so you don't make the same mistake I did.

This one's a little out there, which I really dig. Stranger is an old, wounded bounty hunter who has to? take on new gigs to pay for your surgery, lest he winds up dead. Also, he doesn't use deadly munitions, because he doesn't believe in guns. Instead, he uses organic matter -- like rodents and eels and stuff -- to take down his enemies. The game also blends third-person exploration with first-person combat, adding yet another unique trait to the already-crowded field.

Time to draw up those battle plans

Kalypso Media has revealed release windows for the HD remasters of classic strategy titles Commandos 2 and Praetorians. Both titles are set to launch on PC in January 2020, with console ports for P??S4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch to follow sometime in spring.

Commandos 2 first launched back in 2001, and tasks players with overcoming immeasurable odds in a series of difficult an??d taxi??ng stealth missions. Controlling a small squad of soldiers, each with their own very unique skills and abilities, players must perform assassinations, recon missions, and acts of sabotage behind enemy lines, with scalpel precision and expert timing required to complete the task at hand and make it back home alive.

Praetorians, which launched on PC back n 2003, is a real-time-strategy title set on the ba??ttlefields of the Roman Empire. Selecting from one of a number of factions, players must maintain effective garrisons while training a variety of specialised units to fend off attack and conquer their enemies. The remastered edition will retain an updated online multiplayer mode.

Closed betas for both games will begin on December 13. Commandos 2 HD Remaster and Praetorians HD Remaster will  launch on PC in January, and PS4, Xbox One ?and Nintendo Switch in spring.

Ten-hut!

Kalypso Media has released a gameplay trailer for Yippee Entertainment's upcoming HD remaster of classic strategy title Commandos 2, which?? ori?ginally launched for PC and consoles back in the early '00s.

Much like its companion series Desperados, Commandos tasks players with guiding a small group of highly skilled specialists th??rough a series of complex missions against the backdrop of World War II, using each characters knowledge of stealth, subterfuge, explosives and weaponry to complete a series of objectives behind enemy lines. Clever coordination, expert timing and a knack for adaptation under pressure is requ?ired to complete each mission and bring your squad home alive.

To accompany the visual overhaul, Commandos 2 HD Remaster will also be getting a new UI, as well as a fully reworked control system and a new tutorial. The latter feature should come in very handy as I remember this game being preeeetty tricky. But fans on pinpoint strategy games should definitely keep an eye out? for this if they missed it first time around.

PC release still TBA

[Update: Publisher GungHo Online has confirmed that dual language support won't launch with the Grandia HD Collection. In an update post-launch, the feature will come as free DLC ??for owners of the main game.]

The Grandia HD Collection will be heading to Nintendo Switch next week. Releasing on August 16, 2019, the collection packs both Grandia and Grandia II in a single package with remastered visuals and audio. A PC release of the original Grandia will follow but is still TBA.

As noted in a press release, both releases will contain enhancements to the UI for widescre??en, dual audio, full French and German translations for text, updated sprites and?? texture art, and completely remastered cinematics. It sounds like the definitive version of these games, which should make fans of the Saturn/Dreamcast originals very pleased.

R.I.P. Adam West

[Update: Publisher of this remake, Microïds, has confirmed that XIII will be coming to PC, PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and Mac OS when it launches in November. The title will be developed by PlayMagic Ltd.]

PlayMagic Ltd will be resurrecting the old Ubisoft cel-shaded FPS XIII this November. In a remake coming to all major platforms, PlayMagic is rebuilding the entire game from the ground up to take advantage of new??er graphical technology. While no actual gameplay was shown off, a teaser trailer confirms that the art style isn't being dramatically overhauled.

Based off of a Belgian graphic novel, XIII has grown a cult following over the years. While I was absolutely enamored with it upon release in 2003, I've grown to not really enjoy it in the following years. A lot of that has to do with how clunky the gunplay is, not to mention its cliffhanger ending that leaves the plot completely unresolved. The whole thing ??was a mixed bag of great technology and outdated design that created an odd whole.

What I really won?der is if th??e original voice cast will be retained. While I don't care if David Duchovny reprises his role, it'd be a real shame to lose Adam West as General Carrington. I know he can't re-record lines, but it would be a fitting tribute to the legendary actor to keep his work for the game.

Not a sequel to the Maiden song

The point-and-click adventure genre has slowly been coming back into prominence over the last console generation. Starting with revivals of old LucasArts games from Telltale, the legendary Secret of Monkey Island got an HD port in 2009 and gamers were able to relive the glory days on modern platforms. With the success of that re-release, i??t was only a matte?r of time before more games in the same vein came to life.

There have certainly been ups and downs with these newer titles (Broken Age was a massive disappointment), but no one has quite nailed the LucasArts vibe of the '90s (Thimbleweed Park being an exception). When I got an email about checking out 3 Minutes to Midnight, I initially didn't know what the?? hell I was in for. The name sounds like a play on an Iron Maiden song and I thought ??this was going to be some weird, heavy metal inspired shooter.

Turns out it's a point-and-click game in the style of LucasArts classics. Think a combination of Monkey Island with the aesthetic of The Brady Bunch and you're kind of close. Taking place in the 1940s, 3 Minutes to Midnight tasks players with uncovering a mystery in New Mexico after a freak explosion wipes everyone’s memories.? Solving that mystery will require you to talk to citizens, combine odd items together, and click on literally everything in sight.

While demoing the title at PAX, I had a chance to speak with Jan Serra, game director on 3 Minutes to Midnight. We both talked about how disappointed we were in Broken Age and how the puzzles in 3 Minutes seem to be a better realization of what made classic point-and-clicks so engaging for fans. You won't find super easy solutions or totally obvious clues, but puzzles that rew??ard worldly knowledge.

For instance, the demo available took place in a secluded segment of the game's second chapter. Wishing to avoid spoilers, this small slice of gameplay was completely devoid of context and relatively free of any character explanations. It took place in a camp named "Crystalline Lake" and tasked protagonist Betty Anderson with getting a key from the camp counselor, named Pa??m. Obviously asking her would be too easy, so I needed to scour the small area for some items to trick Pam into letting her guard down so I could get the key.

At one point, I was on a screen with the path blocked by a bunch of angry-ass mosquitos. Doubling back to the main camp, there's a section on the left that contains citronella plants. If you know anything about bug spray, you'll know that citronella is a prime ingredient for how it repels mosquitos. I went back to the mosquito gathering and noticed a candle on the table. There was a small grinder on? the floor near the candle, so I fed ??the citronella plant in there, dipped the candle, and had my solution.

If you couldn't figure that out, though, 3 Minutes to Midnight has a really organic way of informing the player about potential solutions. Instead of using a guide system like in the Monkey Island remake, talking to different characters multiple times or using an item inco??rrectly a few times will result in unique dialogue that should point you in the right direction. Givin??g another example from the demo, there is a point where I needed to use a plunger attached to a rope to drag a boat across the lake.

When you unsuccessfully throw the plunger, a diver in the lake comments that "You lack core strength." While a little vague, it does clue you into the fact that simply hurling the objec??t across the water isn't going to cut it. I remembered from an earlier section that I had gotten Pam to bring out a fire extinguisher and there was some kind of shute available from a portapotty I exploded, so I figured combining all of that would MacGyver a plunger launcher together.

That isn't to say the demo was perfect, because a few triggers for specific events didn't work correctly. Getting the chute, for instance, tasks you? with coaxing the diver out of the portapotty. I only spoke to him once and figured he wouldn't have anything else to say, so I left. Turns ??out I needed to interact with him a bunch of times to initiate the sequence that would launch him from the toilet. This was more down to the game being a demo since Scarecrow Studios hasn't put in enough lines of dialogue to aid lost players just yet.

As Serra told me, the voice actress for Betty caught a cold a week before PAX, so they weren't able to get her to record more lines for the demo. If she had, Betty would have likely stated that something fishy was going on in the portapotty. Little touches like that are something Serra prides himself on. As he explained to me, every NPC will have extra dialogue for convenience sake. Certain players will never see some of these interactions, but the goal with 3 Minutes to Midnight is to keep players engaged instead of frustrated. The answers won't be obvious, but t??he verbal clue??s should be enough to point you in the right direction.

That is something I can appreciate, too. I can't tell you how many classic games literally drop you when the going gets tough. I love Monkey Island as much as the next person, but who the hell ever thought to combine the rubber chicken and pulley together? On what planet does that kind of logic make sense? Serra laughed when I said that but was quick to point out that that kind of absurdist humor is what made LucasArts so popular. 3 Minutes to Midnight isn't abandoning those kinds of solutions but will ha?ve better hints to guide players alo?ng. Really, that's all you could ask for.

The humor of the game is right in line with LucasArts' golden days. When you first speak to Pam, you quickly realize that she has?? multiple personality disorder. She starts holding a conversation with herself and Betty just sits there with a confused look on her face. Another character you can interact with is a raccoon and Betty will suggest a trade to get his fancy garbage for dinner. She then pauses and realizes she's talking to an animal, noting that she's going insane.

In a way, she reminds me of Guybrush Threepwood. She's a bumbling idiot but somehow overcomes her ??own inadequacies to make progress. She's also very affable, never getting bogged down or angry. It's hard not to like her, even if you have no basis of comparison to classic adventure games.

If you're a fan of those games, though, 3 Minutes to Midnight pays homage to them in a wonderful manner. Even the art style feels like an evolution of LucasArts titles, opting to go for hand-??drawn HD sprites instead of pixel art. LucasArts may be long dead, but their spirit will live on when Scarecrow Studio releases the game later this year. It will launch on PC with ports coming to all major platforms sometime next year.

Skybound and Beamdog team up to port BioWare's classics

A whole slew of classic action RPGs are coming to consoles in the near future. Skybound Bounds has teamed up with developer Beamdog to port over its enhanced editions of Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate II, Neverwinter Nights, Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate: Siege of Dragonspear to multiple co?nsoles. Specific platforms weren't named, though it seems likely it wil?l be PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

In a press release from Skybound, retail and digital are mentioned among the options available for purchase. This will likely be the first chance fans will have of acqu??iring boxed copies of these enhanced editions ports, which is goo??d news for everyone.

Skybound's CEO, Ian Howe, said, "We're excited to bring Beamdog's incredible slate to new platforms for both the dedicated fan and those who will soon discover these adventures for the first time. As longtime fans of Baldur's Gate and Dungeons & Dragons, it's fantastic to partner with Beamdog as the newest member of the S??kybound family."

Our fi??rst look at these new versions will be at PAX East next month. Each title will be on display at Skybound's booth from March 28 until March 31. I'll have to make sure to take a look because I'm very curious how these complex RPGs will be translated to gamepads.

Since last September, fans have been dying to find out more about Final Fantasy hitting the Switch. It's been a long time coming for the series to return to a Nintendo console, so when would we finally be able to take these games on the go? April 2019 is the answer, as Nintendo has tweeted out that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster and Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age will be coming to the eShop then.

X/X-2 will be released on April 16 and XII will be available on April 30. No prices were given, but I'd assume they'd?? be the same as the previous re-releases on PS3 and PS4. I think it's also safe to assume this will be the same date the games are made available to Xbox One fans, as well.

Bundled up under the Hitman HD Enhanced Collection banner

If you've somehow run out of silly things to do in Hitman 2 or you're feeling nostalgic, IO Interactive is bringing Hitman: Absolution and Hitman: Blood Money to PS4 and Xbox One with a remaster two-pack.

This isn't the first time we've seen older Hitman titles resurface on newer consoles, and it won't be the last. I mean, as long as it's a decent conversion, why not? Utilitarian name aside, the Hitman HD Enhanced Collection promises 4K ??resolution and 60 frames per second support along with higher-res textures, super-sampling, better lighting, and "updated controls for?? a more fluid experience."

Those features are all to be expected, but the real surprise is the release date: the Hitman HD Enhanced Collection is?? fast approaching PS4 and Xbox One with a $60 digital launch planned on January 11, 2019. There wasn't any mention of a possible PC counterpart in Warner Bros. and IO's announcement today. For that matter, they haven't shown footage or screenshots of these remasters yet.

As a refresher, here are some old clips of memorable missions from Absolution and Blood Money:

Given the games involved, I feel like folks are about to duke it out in an M-for-Mature Splatfest. Absolution has its dedicated fans, but it's hard to top a near-everlasting icon like Blood Money.

I'm just not sure how many people will be willing to rush out for this collection on day one given the recent steep discounts for last year's still-very-fresh Hitman 2. It'd be a no-brainer for Hitman fans if IO were selling a full remake of Blood Money using its latest tech and know-how, but that's easier said than done. A relatively quick ??and cheap-to-produce remaster is less of a risk for Warner Bros.

Zone of the Enders is a surprise

Sony has announced the free titles available for PS Plus subscribers next month and there seems to be something odd going on. Each platform has one quality game mixed with an underwhelming one. On PS4, you'll get Ubisoft's open-world sports game Steep and the quirky craftathon Portal Knights. For PS3, Zone of the Enders HD Collection stands out amongst the disappointing Amplitude reboot. On Vita, you'll get the amusing Super Mutant Alien Assault along with the half-sequel Fallen Legion: Flames of Rebellion.

That is quite a mismatch of quality. None of the games are outright bad, but there are clearly superior outings sitting aside weaker games that aren't really begging to be played. I can't say I'd recommend you play Steep over any of the other games, for instance.

As with last month, Digital Extremes is still handing out the Warframe: PlayStation Plus Booster Pack III. This will be available for subscribers until January 15, 2019, and offers ??100 platinum, 100,000 credits, an extra laser rifle, a skin for that rifle, a seven-day affinity booster and a seven-day credit booster. It's a pretty ?nice package for anyone still sinking their teeth into the free-to-play shooter.

My, Earth really is full of things!

It’s been 14 years since Katamari Damacy graced us with its bizarro charm and broken family dynamics, but the King of All Cosmos is back in full HD? and it’s up to you to do the (literal) groundwork so the universe can be whole again.

For those who haven’t experienced the original Katamari Damacy, the general purpose is to roll around a small ball that magically picks up things like ants and candy, eventually growing to consu?me humans, houses, and well...everything on Earth. Once complete, the Katamari is shot up in the sky to replace a celestial body that your father, the King of All Cosmos, destroyed through what was essentially a raging, drunken escapade through space.

If only half of the words in that paragraph made se??nse to you, don’t fret; you now have the chance to read this review and decide if you’d like to experience it for you??rself in HD.

For me, revisiting Katamari Damacy was akin to revisiting an old family friend after 14 years -- I wasn’t sure if the feelings of gratitude and love would still remain or if it would be awkward as hell. Fortunately, it's the former as the game’s mechanics, blocky environments, weirdly delightful music, and cheeky dialogue have aged surprisingly well. Coupled with the remastered graphics and HD cutscenes, REROLL feels like a game that could have very well?? come out in 2018 as a new, funky enterp??rise.

The updated graphics and assets are truly the shining star of this remaster. Every object from a thumbtack to a giant squid is crystal clear and bright in all its blocky glory. Outside of the graphics, I found REROLL also features vastly improved load and save times, which are lightning fast when compared to the original??. The movement and physics of rolling the Katamari feel extremely similar to the PS2 version, which can be a benefit or a burden depending on yo??ur preference as the game can still feel a little 2004 clunky at times.

There are a few other minor changes, like the cutscenes being in their original Japanese with subtitles and an added tutorial screen reminding you to save your game manually (remember when that was a thing?). There’s also a new control style, called the “simple” style, which is anything but simple as it places the rolling mechanism on one joystick while the other ??moves the camera. On PC, you’re able to play with the keyboard as well, but it was so counterintuitive I wasn’t able to get past the tutorial.

Other than that, Katamari Damacy is left simply as it was. Which means of course that you can only edit settings, including display resolutions in the Steam version, on your Home Planet after you complete the entire tutorial, just like in 2004 when most games had physical landing spaces for the options menu. Although I see it as charming, I imagine most people will find this frustrating. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to review it on the Switch, but I imagine the added benefit there is to have Katamari Damacy on the go.

The joy and insanity of Katamari Damacy are just as alive as ever, if not more so, in REROLL. I felt just as energized playing it as I did nearly a decade and a half ago, whether it was from rolling up a perfectly sized bear or creating a brand new moon made from Japanese islands. Katamari Damacy is ??ageless in that way, the simple goal of growth sliced a million different ways to form an infinitely replayable game.

For those who haven’t yet given Katamari Damacy a shot, if you long for the unexpected and uncomplicated, Katamari Damacy REROLL offers r??espite from the norm of today’s games. If you’ve always had a soft spot for the s??eries, this is your chance to relive the joys of proving yourself through a brighter, more clearly defined lens.

Field of Screams

Square Enix has dropped new gameplay footage for PS4 upcoming PS4 release The Last Remnant Remastered. The new vid??eo shows off the RPG's turn-based battle system, as our squad of heroes face off against som??e nasty beasties.

This remaster of the 2008 Xbox 360 and PC release is built on the Unreal 4 engine has completely revised textures, lighting, skin-tones, and other under-the-hood tech. It will hopefully be a wonderful trip down memory lane for fans of?? the original whilst in??viting new players, who missed it the first time around, into its world of swords and sorcery.

The Last Remnant Remastered will be made available f??or downloa?d tomorrow, worldwide, on PS4.

HD PUZZLES!

Announced just a few days ago, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is heading to mobile devices in Ja??pan next month. We now have a trailer to show us how it will look and I'm super jealous. Is it too much to ask Level-5 to port these to the Switch?

In any case, the mobile format is perfect for replicating the dual-screen layout of the DS in portrait mode. It seems like this is a perfect way to experience the Layton series, especially with those snazzy HD cutscenes. Those are,?? honestly, my favorite part ?of the whole experience.

Since the first game's mobile port did eventually head West, we likely won't need to wait long for our chance to experience the Professor's second outing on our phones. I'll likely bite the bullet when Unwound Future comes since that is my favorite of the series.

Earlier this year, the first Professor Layton game came to Japanese smartphones as an HD port before heading West a few months later. Now, the second game in the series, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box (or the much cooler international name, Pandora's Box) is getting ??the same treatment. Announced only for Japan so far, this new port will feature th?e same updated visuals and cutscenes as the original, though no new animation is being teased.

The game will hit Japanese app stores next month for 1,200 yen. If you've never played the sequel (most people seem to ignore it in favor of the incredible Unwound Future), you're in for a treat. I'm mostly curious how the one very specific DS puzzle will work without a clamshell device, but this game is a real joy with so?me better-integrated puzzles and a very compel??ling plot.  It also has Luke yelling, "PROFESSAH!" in a way that only he can.

We'll?? likely see this sometime next year in the US, so keep your eyes out for it.

What did you say, Spyro?

Subtitles serve a lot of different purposes in our media. They can be an aid for people with hearing deficiencies, they can help us understand foreign languages without the need for dubbing and they can even be used when we need to mute audio and be kind to the other people in our homes. I may not personally use them in English language games, but I'd never call for them to be removed from a title. For some odd reason, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy doesn't feature subtitles during certain periods of its ??duration.

GamePitt noted this in an article a few days ago. Subtitles are present when talking to NPCs in the game world, but are completely absent in all of the pre-rendered cutscenes. While the original Spyro didn't use pre-rendered cutscenes for its story, Reignited Trilogy does a?nd there can be some crucial information missing for players with impaired or?? no hearing.

GamePitt reached out to Activision and received the ?following statement:

When Toys For Bob set out to make an awesome game collection, there were certain decisions that needed to be made throughout the process. The team remained committed to keep the integrity and legacy of Spyro that fan??s remembered intact. The game was built from the ground up using a new engine for the team (Unreal 4), and was localized in languages that had not previously been attempted by the studio. While there's no industry standard for subtitles, the studio and Activision care about the fans' experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities, and will evaluate going forward.

That doesn't outright dismiss the possibility of subtitles coming to Spyro, but it certainly sounds like Activision has no interest in adding them. I really don't understand why they would be left out, especially if localization teams drafted up scripts for different languages. Whatever the case, if enough people complain about this, we could see the feature come in the future.

There's a headline I always hoped to write

Not long ago, we reported on how a full-size, fire-breathing, talking Spyro the Dragon drone was been sent on a quest to reach legendary rapper Snoop Dogg and deliver him his copy of upcoming Sony release, Spyro: Reignited Trilogy.

Well, I'm happy to report that Spyro braved the skies and made it, without being hit by lightning or shot down by paranoid alien hunters. The little dragon that could arrived at Snoop Dogg's estate, where he was bestowed a gold chain and posed for a photo with the global superstar. Looking at his eyes, I'd say Spyro has already been chilling there for a while... which would make sense, given that, frankly it doesn't even look like the same model from the previous article. Still, look at the header image; Snoop Do??gg posing with a fire-breathing drone of Spyro the Dragon.?.. That's a thing that happened.

Of course, this bizarre-but-fun publicity stunt helps drum up word for the release of Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, which brings together three PS1 classics, freshly cleaned up for launch on modern platforms. The package features Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon, though the physical release requires you to download a whopping chunk of the latter two titles According to one Resetera user, the patch weighs in at around 19GB on PS4.

Highway to hell

The awesome indie roguelike Road Redemption, inspired by Road Rash, is now available on PS4 and Switch. It will be heading to Xbox One in the coming weeks. The game can be yours for $19.99 off of the PSN or eShop (depending on console). It will pack the same single-player campaign, online multipla??yer races and offline co-op mode as the PC ??version.

The PC version of Road Redemption recently saw an update that brought content from Killing Floor 2 into the fray. If you own both games on Steam, you'll be able to unlock DJ Skully and Hans Volter as riders in Redemption and a spiked bat in Killing Floor 2. This content will be heading to consoles in the W?inter.

Turn-based gunplay galore

For the most part, Japanese role-playing games are like video game comfort food. For those of us that enjoy them, they're a known quantity and rarely stray away from the flagpole franchises that we're all familiar with like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. 

We might have seen something of a resurgence in these sprawling JRPGs recently, but back in the Xbox 360 and the PS3 era, new games of this caliber were few and far between. Resonance of Fate initially released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2010 and I never did find time to play it. Though a 4K rerelease of the gun RPG seems entirely out of le?ft field, it's great to see ti?tles like this getting a second chance to thrive.

Resonance of Fate takes place on an Earth of the distant fu??ture where, surprise surprise, we've destroyed the environment t??o the point where our atmosphere can't support human life. To get around this little setback, humans create Basel, a massive air purification system controlled by something called the Zenith system.  Eventually, humans build cities on the massive tower of Basel, but Basel doesn't just control the environment. It controls every aspect of human life. 

Society on Basel is broken ?up into a caste system. A person's class is determined at birth and the higher your class, the higher in the tower you live. At the very top of the tower are the Cardinals, who otherwise act as the ruling class of Basel. Zenith even programs a "quartz system" that controls ??every citizen's exact lifespan.

The protagonists of Resonance are Vashyron, Zephyr, and Leanne. They're part of the middle class of Basel and work as Hunters, hired guns who make a liv?ing doing odd jobs. Everything from monster extermination to letter ?delivery. 

The world of Resonance of Fate is fascinating but is quickly squandered by its storytelling. The steampunk city has the potential to be great, but the plot takes forever to get off the ground and relies too heavily on canned character moments that don't land. While you're trying to fi?gure out what exactly the fuck is going on, the narrative keeps jumping back to moments of off-color humor between our three protagonists that are more cringe-worthy than they are funny. I also wouldn't come here looking for well-written villains. The ruling Cardinal class seems to spend a good portion of their time plotting and laughing about how evil they are.

The best part of Resonance of Fate is its combat, an insanely unique and complex system even the most seasoned JRPG veterans will require more than a few minutes to wrap their heads around. For starters, where most role-playing adventures are filled with swords and spells, Resonance of Fate is dominated by guns and grenades. It combines some classic turn-based combat with elements you would more commonly find?? in action RPGs.

Players are ?given full control over all three party members during battle. You have all the time in the world to plan out your moves, but when you're moving or using an ability like readying an attack, a timer starts draining. This allows you to quickly interrupt enemy attacks or have yours interrupted if you're not careful. It also means one bad move can be the difference between victory and defeat; feeling pretty rewarding when things go your way.

The battle system is very confusing at the outset and is made harder to get a grasp of considering the optional tutorials aren't directly accessible from a menu but have to be sought out at the local arena. You'll have to balance learning complicated team attacks, mastering machine guns and pistols that deal different damage types, and in the end, Resonance is still one hell of a grind. There are plenty of enemy types in Basel but not enough to k??eep things fresh through the fifty or so hours of game. 

Dungeons in Basel ar??e laid out like one long encounter in which you move from battle to battle. An idea that is interesting on paper, but it ends up being a series of bland almost identical rooms in which you fight some basic enemies and then finally a boss. Also, if you end up deciding to leave and grind out a bit it means you'll have to start the whole encounter over next time, and if ??you happen to find yourself low on Escape Hexes, the item that teleports you out of a dungeon, you'll have to backtrack all the way out upon completion. 

More interesting than the other varying systems in Resonance of Fate is Babel's world map. The entire city is laid out in multiple levels on a giant hexagonal grid. The city is falling into disrepair, and certain areas have become untraversable. To combat this, you'll need to lay down energy hexes you earn in combat??. As you light up different areas of the grid, you'll find hidden items, gain access to new towns, and opens lifts to other levels of the tower. Certain areas block progress by using color coated hexes only obtainable via story missions. 

Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition is definitely a visual update from the original, but even in 4K, it's st?ill sort of an ugly game. The character and city design are just fine, but the whole color palette is muddy and dark. I understand going for an apocalyptic vibe, but it can't hurt to pop a little more color into things. 

If you're a hardcore fan of Japanese role-playing games, then Resonance of Fate might be for you. The storytelling is far from remarkable, and the battle system requires a whole lot of patience and commitment. It wasn't groundbreaking in 2010 and isn't groundbreaking now, but there are a handful of neat ideas. I can't help but wish they had done the work to make this updated version a bit more approachable via updated tutorials, but for those looking for that classic tale of a group of teenagers out to murder god, you'll find comfort in Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition.

Arthas was always the Lich King!

Fans were stunned after yesterday's announcement of Warcraft III: Reforged. Not only did Blizzard remember that Warcraft was once a strategy game, but they were going much farther in updating the classic than last year's StarCraft: Remastered. This could almost be considered a remake of the quality of textures and cutscenes going on. That touch up is extending to a bit more than just aesthetics, thou??gh.

As reported by Polygon, Blizzard's Brian Souza and Pete Stillwell elaborated on the changes coming to Reforged in a post-presentation interview. The biggest announcement is that Reforged will be compatible with the original release of Warcraft III. Even community developed maps and mods will work with th?e new remaster. You won't need to buy the new version to play?? online, either, though doing so will obviously net you more modern visuals.

Stillwell explained the difference between this and StarCraft: Remastered. "When we went to Korea [for StarCraft: Remastered] and talked with pros and people still playing in game rooms, the overwhelming feedback was 'Please don't change the game.'...But with [Warcraft III: Reforged], we've talked with the communities in Europe and in China [who say]??, 'Hey, we don't think t??his game is done.'"

To that end, Blizzard will be introducing a wide range of balance tweaks and even expanding on the options available in the game's editor. In a move that will likely be controversial, Blizzard is also working with writer Christie Golden (famous for her Warcraft novels) to tweak aspects of Warcraft III's story to fall in line with established World of Warcraft lore.

This move is being done to give, "renewed focus to a few central characters that we thought deserved a little bit more time in the limelight," as Stillwell puts it. Stillwell then mentions characters like Jaina and Sylvanas, whose roles in the original campaign were pretty thin. He even brought up the Murloc creatures, which were basically a reskinned enemy before becoming an entire race in World of Warcraft.

"A lot of stuff in Warcraft III was just kind of put in as 'Hey, isn't this awesome? This is cool,' Stillwell recounted. "Like the Murlocs for instance. One of the artists back in the day, he came in over the weekend because he felt that there needed to be more creeps on the maps ... so he just retextured what the g?houl was and he made a Murloc."

Along with that, some of the landscapes in Warcraft III will feature more defined architecture to better capture what World of Warcraft has on off???er. The biggest can be seen in the trailer for "The Culling" mission, which features a Stratholme more in line with the popular MMO than the original. Stillwell mentions, specifically, that Stratholme originally had Greek columns and a small river that didn't make a whole lot of sense for the village.

Whether or not these changes are what you want is another matter. I'm not sure how I feel about rewriting entire bits of lore, seeing as how World of Warcraft was built off of Warcraft III and not the reve??rse. I guess it would be interesting to see that backstory ??become more fleshed out, but nothing in WoW directly contradicts the RTS classic. This just seems like a bit of meddling to better justify the "Reforged" moniker.

At the same time, the classic Warcraft III isn't going anywhere. Reforged is based on that and while balance updates will make their way to the original, players will still be able to access that version in all its 2002 glory. You can already boot it up in HD thanks to a patch from earlier this year, so it? isn't like Blizzard is demanding you move over to the new version.

All in all, I'm not quite sure what to make of this. I'm still pretty excited since I love Warcraft III. Those tweaks might get o??ut of hand, though, and that wouldn't be good.

There's a sentence I never thought I'd write

We're bearing down on the release of Spyro Reignited Trilogy, which compiles three classic PS1 adventures??, polishing them up for a return on modern platforms. Though most buyers will pick the game up from their local store, or perhaps order online, legendary rapper Snoop Dogg has his own method of delivery.

Activision has commissioned the building of a full-size, talking and fire-breathing drone of the titular dragon, which is apparently flying to locations that inspired the levels of Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Way of the Dragon. As seen in the video below, Spyro has already ch?ecked out the castle that was the inspiration for the first game's "Ston?e Hill" area.

Once his sight-seeing tour is complete, Spyro will fly to Snoop D-O-Double-G, delivering the life-long fan his own copy of Reignited Trilogy. As far as publicity stunts go, this has to rank as one of the most bizarre ??but, somehow, one of the best. Godspeed Spyro, please don't c??rash and burn down the countryside.

The rest needs to be downloaded

In a statement given to IGN, Activision was clarified what will be contained on retail copies of the upcoming Spyro Reignited Trilogy. Alongside the entirety of the first game, portions of Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon ??will be contained on the disc. Users will still need to download the remaining levels from both sequels, but it should cut down on the size of t?he download required.

"The trilogy will ship with content from each of the three games, including the entire first game and a subset of levels from games 2 and 3. In order for the full Reignited Trilogy offerings, a day one update is required," Activision told IGN. Activision didn't specify which levels would be playable, so? it could be the final one for all we know.

This means that if you can't immediately connect to the internet to download the remaining content, you'll still be able to play some of Ripto's Rage or Year of the Dragon. I don't think that matters much, though, as a physical version? of the game typically contains everything needed to play the game. People who are holding out for a disc? probably don't have the best internet or just want to have their game for a time when servers aren't available.

Whatever the reason for this decision, at least the download shouldn't be stupidly large.

Activision Clarifies Spyro Reignited Trilogy Download Requirements [IGN]

WOAH! FIRE!

Cropping up last week from seemingly nowhere, multiple retailers have a listing for a Spyro Reignited Trilogy and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy bundle pack. The compilation is listed for PS4 and Xbox One with a November 13 release date and is going for $59.99. It contains all six games in one package, though curiously Spyro still makes mention of requiring a content download.

That last bit is concerning since the Spyro trilogy was delayed seemingly to fix that issue. While never officially stated as such, if cramming the other games on a single disc wasn't the reason, then what happened with Spyro? In any regard, this bundle is likely the cheapest way you'll get to experience both trilogies with little to no hassle. $10 per game is a great deal and barring any huge technical hurdles with the remaster, Spyro's original games still hold up well.

You can view listings for the bundle from Walmart, Bull Moose, Provantage and Blowitoutahere. Walmart currently does not allow you to pre-order, though the other sites still have active listings.

DOCTOR!

Two Point Hospital is a really great revival of the quirky Theme Hospital. It captures all of the humor and charm of the original classic while injecting i?t with a modern art style that will constantly have you smiling. The one thing it left out, though, was a sandbox mode. For whatever reason, you were limited to the 15 hospitals the game had and the missions associated with them.

In a new update, though, Two Point Hospital will finally be jumpin??g into the upper echelon of? classic management sims. As the YouTube description for the trailer reads:

So… what is Sandbox: Freeplay? Essentially, it's Two Point Hospital your way. All you'll need to do is play through the first 3 levels of the game to unlock it, then you can create sandbox hospitals in any of the 15 levels availa?ble in the game!

Along with the freedom to create your perfect hospital, you can tweak a number of parameters to have th???e game mesh with your specific style. Don't want epidemics breaking out? Turn them off. Tired of seeing patients queue up outside the doctor's office? Get rid of them! You can even copy and paste room layouts to quickly expand your hospital to other buildings.

All in all, it should make for quite the update to Two Point Hospital. I'm al??ready in love with the title, so having a chance to tinker around with i??t will likely suck me right back in.

Tanimura is definitely odd looking

Sega has uploaded some footage of Yakuza 4's PS4 remaster to YouTube. Along with showing off a much higher resolution and a rock-solid framerate, this is also the first look we're getting of protagonist Masayoshi Tanimura's new actor. Famtisu had revealed ??screenshots, a release date and details about the remaster days ago and some fans were left scratching their heads at the recasting of a main character.

In all honesty, I?? had a hard time distinguishing him in the first shot of the trailer. From his side profile, new actor Toshiki Mas??uda bears resemblance to original actor Hiroki Narimiya. It's everywhere else that comes off odd to me. I'm too used to Narimiya's voice and I just cannot get on with that weird face in close-up shots.

Those nitpicks aside, everything else looks just as I remember it in Yakuza 4. The game has some excellent ambiance and that is being completely retained. Seeing as how this isn't a Kiwami style redo, that makes perfect sense.?? It stil??l sucks about Tanimura's complete change, though.
