Like many others in these awful times, the people behind the legendary Mega64 YouTube and Twitch channels saw their revenue drop drastically in the last?? month. They only have enough to keep both the cool RGB lights and even the regular ones on for a couple of weeks.

Yesterday, in a Twitch stream that proved spooky for the wrong reasons, Mega64 reveale?d a bunch of serious unexpected hurdles that the group is dealing with.

What happened to Mega64?

Declining ad revenue - The Internet hasn't been kind on content creators lately, and Mega64 has been having it unfairly rough. Though their content re??tains the same level of quality, YouTube just isn't as lucrative as it once was.

Merchandise Problems - While the group takes the bl?ame for ??taking longer than it should to deliver some of its merchandise, merch also saw an unrelated decrease in sales and profitability due to inflated production costs.

Bad Faith actors - The group has sad??ly fallen prey to a yet-unknown scammer or party of scammers whi??ch has stolen thousands of dollars in donation money and also prevented the group from getting further donations on their regular donation channels.

What is Mega64?

Mega64 began as an innocent project by friends Rocco Botte, Derrick Acosta, and Shawn Chatfield that turned into one of the most beloved gaming-relat?ed channels on YouTube.

I was already an adult when I was f??irst exposed to Mega64's content, but I'd be lying if I were to ignore the group's influence over my work and overall desire to make video game-related content.

Among many other things, Mega64's YouTube channel is a trailblazer of video-game-related parodies. One problem with Internet comedy is that it tends to grow old fast. We all know that. I re-watched some of my favorite Mega64 videos of the pas?t to av??oid getting dunked on for my possibly outdated humor, and can gladly say they absolutely hold up.

The first Mega64 video I ever saw, VG Fact Checkerz?, is a staple of Internet comedy. It does a great job of spoofing a??nswers to ridiculous questions not even the highest-level Redditors were asking back then, and features a contender for the best ending for a YouTube video ever:

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtxK6fKpJpo

Mega64 is also unique in that it somehow managed to get actual video game personalities to go along with their hilarious spoofs. Below you can find Final Fantasy creator Hirono??bu Sakaguchi himself spoof?ing his own history at Squaresoft just because he gets it.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuWkvyeAu0E

They even got Hideki Kamiya,?? one of gaming's most volatile personalities, to poke fun at his own infamous need to block anyone who so m?uch as says anything he doesn't vibe with on Twitter.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=lzNl3Yq5G8Y

The holy grail, to me, at least, is possibly their Death Stranding spoof. There's a twist where?? we learn it was at least partially filmed by Hideo Kojima himself, who then got fired by the Mega64 crew for his poor workmanship.

If you're not familiar with Mega64 a possibility, considering the unbelievable reality of how one of the best things on YouTube for over 20 years has never managed to break one million followers You might think I'm tr?olling you, but it's real. It's all real:

//youtu.be/84SABJJhfZw?t=99

Right now, joining the Mega64 Patreon is the best way to directly contribute to the channel. You can also help via Ko-Fi donation. Sharing your favorite Mega64 videos on Twitter will s?urely remind at least a few people of some of the best moments they've had on the Internet, and that's alre?ady something.

This past year in the gamin??g industry has been riddled with disheartening closures of great studios and layoffs of professionals we dearly miss many even on a personal level. Mega64 is giving us the rare chance of actually preventing something good from disappearing, so consider doing with that information the coolest thing you can think of.

The Viewtiful Joe series used to be one of Capcom's most promising franchises. After a big debut outing on GameCube and PS2 (the later featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series), it got a direct sequel, a multi-console Smash-l??ike spin-off, and side story exclusive to the Nintendo DS.

For a while there, it felt like Joe would be around forever, and in some ways, he has. Like the cast of Capcom's similarly ill-fated Darkstalkers series, Joe got an anime adaptation, loads of merch, and multiple guest spots in crossover titles like Tatsunoko Vs. Capcom, Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, and the most recent iteration of Puzzle Fighter.

But what's really puzzling is why Capcom let the series die after that. Unlike Okami, also developed by Capcom's former studio Clover, none of the Joe games have ever been ported to modern consoles. Fans have never stopped asking for more of both though. Those fans also include Hideki Kamiya, Joe's humble creator. In a recent YouTube video, Kamiya-san lamented:

"I’d love to work on them if I ever get a chance. I actually had the story for a third Viewtiful Joe all thought out. I’ve always wanted to make it. I wonder if Capcom would let me make another Viewtiful JoeOkami, too. I feel like I left t??hat unfinished, so if we could make that happen as well, I’d be happy."

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=allSt9I3H0E

The beginning of Viewtiful friendship?

Okami did continue on in the form of Okamiden in 2010, another DS exclusive, but Kamiya wasn't involved there. By that time he had already moved on to co-found Platinum Games, a team born from the ashes of Clover, which was dissolved in 2006. Platinum's initial releases were all collaborations with publisher Sega, including MadWorld, Bayonetta, and Vanquish.

Th?ey'd later partner with Activision, Konami, Square Enix, and even Nintendo, but never with Capcom. It's been assumed that there may be some bad blood between the two companies, preventing them from revisiting any of Clover's former franchises.

But now that Kamiya-san has left Platinum, the door may open for the legendary director and his former employer to make viewtiful music together again. With its Fred Durst-meets-Power Rangers lead character, 2.5D cel shaded graphics, and gameplay that bridges the gap between the platformers of yesteryear and the character action games of today, everything about Viewtiful Joe screams early-2000s. It's an era that many people today are nostalgic for, proven by the runaway success of Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, Metrid Prime Remastered, and that "Woman is my favorite guy" song everyone liked for about a month.

Testing out the waters with ports of ??the first two games on modern consoles couldn't be such a risky move, right? Has the re-release of a GameCube game ever done poorly on Switch?

Last month we learned that Hideki Kamiya would be resigning from PlatinumGames on October 12. Well, the day has come, so what's the mind behind games like Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and more to do next? Why, start a YouTube channel, of course! Kamiya went live with the appropriately named Hideki Kamiya Channel, and the first vid??eo is up in both Japane?se and English.

The outspoken, block-happy creator didn't waste any time getting to the question on everyone's minds. The inaugural video addresses why he quit PlatinumGames and what his plans are next. In fact, the first thing we see is Kamiya walking out with a box full of items from a f??reshly-cleared desk. "Oh well, I'm done (with Platinum)," he says. "I left. I'm over it. I'm so over it."

With a tongue-in-cheek attitude, Kamiya inv?ites us to take a seat and have a quick chat about what's ne??xt. Let's join him and his Robocop and Mazinger figures in the video below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=zrYQY_JeY-A

"I am Hideki Kamiya, unemployed"

After reflecting on his career which started at Capcom as a planner on Resident Evil he touches on what he's been up to since leaving Platinum. Kamiya says he's been very "refreshed," and has been watching Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, and other stuff??. But surely he isn't just going to stream movies and TV shows for the rest of time, right? All that matters to ??Kamiya is that he doesn't have to attend any more boring meetings.

As for why he quit, after some hemming and hawing he says he wanted to "follow (his) beliefs as a game creator." He's not going to ?retire yet, he just wants to choose the right path and move on. So, for those worried, he does plan to keep making games. He jokes around a bit, wondering if Hamster will hire him and saying he'll do anything. "I'll even do debugging," he pleads.

Time well wasted

In the meantime, Kamiya isn't allowed to work in the video game industry for the next year. It's not stated outright, but this is likely due to non-compete clauses. As such, it'll be a while before we hear anything exciting from the creator. Kamiya will no doubt stay busy between video game jobs, though. He plans to go home and do some cooking. What will his "infinite free time" inspire? Maybe next time we see Kamiya in th?e industry we'll be treated to an intense curry-cooking action game.

For those head-hunting, Kamiya says he's willing to consider any offer "above 100 million yen a year." The ball's in your court, vi??deo games! The rest of us will be keeping an? eye on Kamiya's YouTube channel for more "completely education-free" content.

Hideki Kamiya, one of the founders of PlatinumGames and the creative mind behind Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and the Viewtiful Joe series is le?aving the studio he helped create, according to a post on Twitter made by Kamiya and one made by PlatinumGames. Kamiya’s resignation is effective October 12.

//twitter.com/platinumgames/status/1706201875564130785

“We are truly grateful for [Kamiya’s] creative ideas, leadership, and contribution to the growth of PlatinumGames from our start-up to this very day, said the Bayonetta and Nier: Automata developer in a post on Twitter. It goes on to wish Kamiya success “in his future endeavors as a game creator./p>

//twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/1706202627531489367

In a post made to his personal Twitter account, Kamiya elaborated on his decision to leave Platinum, saying “this came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs. and was by no means an easy decision to make, while also confirming in a reply that he will? ??continue to create “in my Hideki Kamiya way. This, plus the studio’s well wishes, seem to suggest that Kamiya will continue creating games.

Kamiya has become notorious on Twitter for his liberal use of the block button, making it very clear that, among other reasons, responding to him in any language other than Japanese would earn an insta-block.

Kamiya’s career began with Capcom, where he served as a system planner for the original BIOHAZARD, known in the west as Resident Evil. He then went on to become the chief game designer and director for the sequel, BIOHAZARD 2 / Resident Evil 2. Kamiya, Viewtiful Joe producer Atsushi Inaba, and the creator of Resident Evil Shinji Mikami would create Seeds in 2006, the studio that would merge with Tatsuya Minami's Odd Inc. to form PlatinumGames in 2007. It was there where Kamiya would work on titles such as Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, and Astral Chain.

Hope you brought enough lollipops

Bayonetta fans might have had to wait a helluva long time to get their hands on long-in-development sequel Bayonetta 3, but they can seemingly be assured that their favorite witch is set to run and ru?n at least if creator and director?? Hideki Kamiya has his way.

Speaking in a new interview with IGN, Kamiya passionately espoused his love for the high-energy, high-violence franchise, going as far as to suggest that he wants to see many, many more sequels hit the shelves before the demonic diva takes her final bow... if she ever will.

"I love Bayonetta more than anyone," Kamiya told IGN. "Ipersonally can’t conceive the Bayonetta series ever ending. I want to make a Bayonetta 4 and Bayonetta 5, and I intend on pitching them to the company. We often talk internally about how we could make nine of them. I want people who love the Bayonetta series? to believe me when I say: 'I’m not going to do anything that will betray the players'."

/??/www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RlGQM6PvHY&??ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

Elsewhere in the interview, Kamiya seems to suggest that he has Bayonetta's entire universe her adventures, friends, enemies, and overall lore essentially stored in his head and ready to rock. Kamiya notes that he would love to see spin-off games e??xploring other elements of the franchise, perhaps focusing on Bayonetta's litany of sidekicks, such as newcomer witch-in-training Viola or Bayonett'a long-time companion, Jeanne.

"It’s an established part of the character Jeanne that she also works as a superhero named Cutie J. I’d even like to make a spin-off for that," continues Kamiya. "Keeping the Bayonetta series going is of the utmost importance to me, so I’m not fixated on what numbers are attached to a game’s title. I want to be able to depict the extensive world of Bayonetta that is inside my head."

So there you have it, fans. You might have been twiddling your thumbs for the longest time while waiting for Bayonetta's return, but, in Hideki has his way, you'll be gui??ding the sassy sorceress and her army of pals through the seven hells for the rest of your lives. So looks like it's gonna be worth sticking ar?ound. The world will never become too grey while our favorite witch is live and kicking.

Bayonetta 3 is available now on Nintendo Switch.

"I personally do hope that they still have this portable element"

Bayonetta 3 is nearly here after a years-long wait, and amidst its release, we have some Hideki Kamiya Switch thoughts. Those are arguably the best kind of Kamiya thoughts.

Speaking to VGC (alongside of Platinum vice president and CBO Takao Yamane and CEO Atsushi Inaba), vice president Kamiya chimed in ??on several industry topics (as he does!) and touched on a theoretical follow-up to the Nintendo Switch: as well as how he currently engages with his current hardware, and the hobby in general.

Here's Kamiya's full rundown on the issue:

"And that’s exactly how we approached Bayonetta 3: we had to make use of the full potential of the hardware that we have. And as I said, this mentality will be the same on every hardware platform that we’re developing games for moving forward, ??and not a mentality that is limited to the Nintendo Switch. Personally, this is a very lifestyle-oriented preference for myself, but right now I feel it’s really difficult for me to actually 'sit' still in front of the TV and play games. For me, I lie down and play games in portable mode and I enjoy games that way, and that’s the biggest reason why I like the Nintendo Switch. Whenever the new hardware that Nintendo decides to launch next arrives, I personal??ly do hope that they still have this portable element so that it can support my lifestyle of playing games as I lie down!"

So there's several things to unpack here. Obviously Kamiya is going to boost up the current hardwa??re of something he's released several big games on, but the "lifestyle-oriented preference" bit is really interesting. Although portable handhelds have existed for decades, the ability to play many AAA games lying down, for him, ushered in a new way to mesh with the hobby. I've met myriad people who feel the same way, who even play their Switches in portable mode despite being right next to a dock/a TV.

He also mentions "new hardware" from Nintendo, and how a portable element is on his wishlist. I think it's safe to say that if Nintendo does do a Switch Pro to wring out every last drop of the Switch series line (or goes for a Switch 2 in the future): either way it'll likely have a portable focus. Nintendo struck gold with the ability to sell mu??ltiple pieces of hardware to families, and likely won't want to give it up anytime soon.

Basically all they need to do is forge a "more powerful Switch," and most ?of the hard work is done.

No BayoNFTta anytime soon

PlatinumGames head honchos Atsushi Inaba and Hideki Kamiya have slammed the NFT trend, criticizing the controversial blockchain technology for having "no positive impact for creators." The duo's opinion was stated, in no uncertain terms, in an interview with gaming outlet VGC.

"I understand it's a hot topic right now and it's really starting to ga??in momentum," said PlatinumGames CEO Inaba, "but the way that it's gained momentum has been focused on profitability for the company, but with no positive impact on the creators or the users in any sense. So that's frustrating to see happening.

"[The] conve??rsations seem extremely one-sided. 'Hey, you're going to make money!' But how does it benefit the user or the creator? If I want to spend my time on something, I want it to benefit making good games."

Former Capcom producer Kamiya was equally unenthused with the NFT trend, candidly calling out studios such as Konami for hopping on the ultra-?fragile cash-carrying bandwagon.

"If it smells like mone??y," noted the Bayonetta creator "Konami's going to be there in a heartbeat!"

As a major studio, PlatinumGames are somewhat in the minority when it comes to opposing NFT technology. Companies such as Ubisoft, Square Enix, Electronic Arts, Team17, and even some independent developers were quick in their efforts to get on the "bottom rung" of the NFT ladder. While some of the aforementioned studios performed embarrassing about-turns in the face of public derision, others have doubled down, convinced that it's simply the public's fault for not getting with the program.

Alongside the hot button topic of NFTs, Inaba and Kamiya also commented on the upcoming Bayonetta 3,  as well as Platinum's recently released shmup Sol Cresta, the canceled Scalebound, and the studio's overall legacy within the action genre. You can check out the full interview over on VGC.

No Foolin'

PlatinumGames' flashy shmup Sol Cresta has been officially delayed to an unknown future date, and will no longer meet its originally stated release window of December 2021. Director Hideki Kamiya announced the delay on a "Very Sorry" live stream presentation held last night.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ehlJBEk1m0

Sol Cresta, the sequel to 1980s arcade classics Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta, began life as a mere April Fools' Day joke back in the spring of 2020. However, following fans' appreciation of the title's potential, the vertically scrolling shmup sequel was eventually confirmed as an official, upcoming PlatinumGames release with the studio having released several flashy trailers of the old-??school/nu-school title in action in recent months.

The new sequel will see the mighty Yamato space vessel take to the skies once again, battling against the forces of Mega Zohar as it procedurally swallows up entire regions of the galaxy. With humanity currently hidden away on planet Neptune, and? the threat of galactic civilization under threat, it will be the duty of the Yamato and its pilot to make one last assault on the Mega Zohar forces, lest the last flicker of mankind is snuffed out like a candle.

We'll be sure to let you know when the new release date is announced. The title already looks very cool and should definitely prove worth the wait. Sol Cresta is currently in development fo??r PS4, PC, and ?Nintendo Switch.

A mysterious live stream has popped up on the PlatinumGames YouTube, which seems to imply that bad boy auteur Hideki Kamiya will be making an appearance to apologize. Apologi??ze for what??? Well, I'm not actually sure.

The "Hideki Kamiya's Very Sorry Stream" as spotted by VGC's Andy Robinson is scheduled to take place tomorrow, November 2, and seems to be pertaining to Sol Cresta the April Fools' Day joke turned awesome-looking shmup. Perhaps the star fighting space blaster is set to join the long, long, looooong list of video game releases that have seen their launch date pushed back into 2022. Obviously, this delay is purely speculation on my part, but here's hoping that it isn't a full cancellation, what we've seen of Sol Cresta so far has been excellent. I'm sure it won't be.

The Very Sorry Stream will kick off at 20:00 PT / 23:00 ET / 04:00 BST and can be watched over on YouTube or at the embed below. We will be sure to keep you up to date on Kamiya's apology and any relevant news. I'm sure this will be a mere delay for Sol Cresta but for lulz why not frighten a Bayonetta fan by suggesting a Bayonetta 3 cancellation?

Platinum is busy

Earlier this year, Platinum rockstar producer Hideki Kamiya explained that they would probably have something to show for Bayonetta 3 at some point this year. So what better time to check in on that than (??checks watch) two weeks later?

Speaking to VGC, Kamiya explains that it's still very early in the year yet for updates: "It’s not really our position to say, but… it’s January. We’ve got to have something c??ome out, right? I guess it’s safe to expect that something will come out. There’s still a lot of the year left is what I’m saying."

Bitingly, VGC asks about providing something "more substantial than another CGI logo." At which point Kamiya laughs and responds, "I understand it’s driving the fans crazy! In light of that, my suggestion would be that maybe we should all reset and forget about Bayonetta 3. Then when something finally d?oes happen, it wi?ll be a nice surprise, won’t it?"

Truth! But like Square Enix has learned many times before it, showing something far too early can have repercussions. The problem is that Bayonetta 3 is so heavily hitched to the Nintendo wagon, which creates all sorts of problems with expectations. Every time a potential Nintendo Direct "leak" (most of which are bogus or guesses) happens, Bayonetta 3 is almost always on it or speculated on.

That's not necessarily Platinum's fault (especially if it was Nintendo's decision ??to show it early to drive Switch hype), but tha??t energy is out in the universe now. You can't put it back in the bottle!

'Many people are worried about Bayonetta 3'

One of the things I look forward to the most during each holiday season is Fa??mitsu's massive "end of year i??nterview" initiative.

Typically, Famitsu taps? nearly every major Japanese publisher for brief comments on their 2021 goals; some of which dish up huge direct or indirect teases. This year, we got a ton of that. Platinum Games is checking in to tell us a bunch of stuff we already know, but it's generally go??od news nonetheless.

Speaking for Platinum, famed producer Hideki Kamiya noted that although "many people are worried about Bayonetta 3," "verification??s of new systems have been going great and development is going very well." Kamiya admits that this is a "copy" of prior comments, but? the point still stands.

But what about their future endeavors? Well, Project G.G. (working title) is actually happening in earnest, and has moved on from just an idea. Kamiya says that work has "finally started moving, so please look forward to it." Remember, Platinum is also developing Babylon's Fall, and possibly some secr?et projects?? we don't know about yet.

Kamiya's "keyword" for 2?021? "D??o my best." He always does!

Kickstarter backers left disappointed

Platinum Games has apologised for an oversight which saw a batch of faulty Switch codes sent out to backers of The Wonderful 101: Remastered. While it appears that the majority of Switch-owning backers received working codes for th??eir platform of choice, some were left disappointed when their email arrived with a blank code box.

"We have identified the cause of the error situation with The Wonderful 101: Remastered Nintendo Switch codes going out to backers of the Kickstarter," said Platinum Games on Twitter. "(We) are working to get the codes out properly. We apol??ogize for the inconvenience.?"

No specific time-frame was offered for the replacement codes, but no doubt the team is on the case and will hopefully be making amends in th?e immediate future.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered
has had a rough start. Scheduled for release on May 19, Platinum Games was forced to delay shipping physical copies due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The studio will be sending Steam codes to all physical edition backers, so they'll at least be able to play the game while they wait for their discs, which ??are cu??rrently expected to ship around June 30.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered wi?ll launch digitally on?? PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch on May 19 in North America and May 22 in Europe.

Making the best of a not-wonderful situation

Some people who helped crowdfund the Wonderful 101 Kickstarter campaign are going to find themselves with one more copy of the game than they intended. It's a make-good for Platinum -- through no fault of its? own -- not quite being able to deliver on its promise.

Platinum has announced that the physical release of The Wonderful 101: Remastered has been delayed because of manufacturing difficulties raised by COVID-19. As plants halt production on a global scale, Platinum isn't the first company to find itself unable to get physical copies of games ready to ship. It's the very reason Sony chose to delay The Last of Us Part II yet again.

However, whereas Sony delayed because it wanted everyone playing at the same time, Platinum wants to fulfill its original promise. The game is done, after all. Digital copies of The Wonderful 101: Remastered will still go out in time for a May 19 launch in North America, followed by May 22 in Europe. Right now, ??the expected dates for the physical editio??n are June 30 in North America and July 3 in Europe.

Although the logistics problem is perfectly understandable, Platinum is issuing an apology bonus for people who backed the physical edition. They're going to receive an extra code for The Wonderful 101: Remastered on PC so that they, hopefully, can experience the game at launch with everyone else. Platinum plans to start sending digital versions out next week, with the? intention of getting them in all backers' hands by the May 19 launch date.

Henshin-A-Go-Go?

I can credit a lot of games with having a major impact on my view of the hobby. Dragon Warrior was the first major game I played where I felt overwhelmed and had something to work toward. Chrono Trigger opened up how I felt about narratives in the medium. And games like Viewtiful Joe const??antly reminded me of how a bit of simple style can go a long way when it comes to crafting pure joy??.

Viewtiful Joe, a platformer about a regular guy who becomes a super hero, was released in 2003 as Clover Studio's first game (or what would eventually become the legendary Clover). It was so popular that it spawned a sequel a year later, as well as two spinof?fs in 2005. Several years later the director of the original, Hideki Kamiya, and his crew moved away from Capcom ?and into their current outfit of Platinum Games; the series has remained dormant. Kamiya would like to change that.

Speaking to Nintendo Enthusiast at PAX East, Kamiya says that although he has "no control" over the series anymore as it is in Capcom's hands, he'd love to see it return, specifically on Switch. Kamiya opines, "Personally, I really hope that it comes back. I don’t want it to be lost in the sands of time, so to speak. I’m requesting it! I would love it if that would happen." He goes on to say that he would love to "finish that trilogy" with Viewtiful Joe 3.

You don't hear about how Kamiya has unfinished business with this series that often, so this is a pretty big moment for Viewtiful Joe fans. With all the talk of a potential Okami follow-up, maybe the possibility of Platinum and Capcom collaborating is becoming more and more likely. At the very least, Platinum is taking matters into their own hands with a new IP, Project G.G.

Being eaten alive by corpses isn't as bad if they're adorable

Hideki Kamiya, director of Resident Evil 2 and originator of such franchises as Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101, is no stranger to seeing his characters in the hands of other developers. Dante from Devil May Cry, Amaterasu from Okami, and of course, Leon and Claire from Racoon? City are just a handful of his creations who have been taken in new directions wit?hout him.

It's less often than he has one of his games recreated scene-for-scene, but that's exactly what happened with the Resident Evil 2 remake. I asked him what he thought of the new game, and he said "There are some videos of me playing it somewhere, but you have to know that the director of the Resident Evil 2 remake is actually a f??riend of mine. We were coworkers, we used to go out drinking after work, so before the game was announced, he let me know of his intention to remake it. He asked if I have any recommendations or advice, and I told him 'You're the designer. It's up to you.' and that was the last time we talked about it before it was released."

So, what did Kamiya think of it? "..??.after it was released, I was like 'Holy Shit, this is really scary!'" he told me. "The next time I see him I'm going to ask 'Can you make some DLC that's a little less scary, with maybe some cute zombies or something like that? (laughs)"

If it?? was me that remade the game, I'd take that as a compliment. I'd buy that cute zombie DLC in a heartbeat.

Resident Evil 2 is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

The final entry in Kamiya's 'Hero Trilogy'

[Update: Platinum Games has updated the Platinum4 website and released a teaser trailer for Project G.G., which you can check out at the foot o??f the article.]

Platinum Games has dropped new, mysterious information regarding the second title of the fabled "Platinum4." As revealed in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu, "Project G.G." will be a brand new video ga??????????????????????????me directed by industry legend ?Hideki Kamiya.

The new endeavour is set to be the third and final entry in Kamiya's "Hero Trilogy," with the first two entries presumably being 2003's Viewtiful Joe and 2013's The Wonderful 101 (which Platinum is currently remastering as the first Platinum4 release).

Kamiya - along with Platinum Games Studio Head Atsushi Inaba - notes that Project G.G. is in its pre-development stage, and that it is expected to launch on "all existing platforms." The duo also says that Project G.G. is a "giant hero-esque title" that will "go ag??ainst user expectations in a good way." Asked what genre the title would ?fall into, Kamiya says he'd put it in the "something-something action something-something" genre, as it is not a game solely focused on action.

Project G.G. is the second entry of the Platinum4, the third and fourth announcements will be revealed at some point in the futu??re. Inaba notes that the final announcement, in particular, will be "very Platinum and intere??sting."

Further Stretch Goals added

The crowdfunding campaign for The Wonderful 101: Remastered continues to go from strength to strength. Having recently surpassed the $1.5 million USD mark, developer PlatinumGames has confirmed the addition of a new 2D side-scrolling mode: Luka's First Mission.

The spin-off story concerns Luka, a young student who attends the class of Will Wedgewood (aka Wonder-Red). Luka has a chip on his shoulder, as well as a major problem with The Wonderful 100, but Platinum says that you'll have to wait to play the new mode to find out Luka's story, as well as how he ultimately fits within The Wonderful 101 universe.

Understandably, given the initial success of the crowdfunding campaign, Platinum has added several further Stretch Goals, including a remixed soundtrack at $1.75 million, and a second Luka adventure should funding hit the $2 million mark. At this rate that heady amount seems a legitimate ??possibility.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered is in development for PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch. There is no official release date, but Platinum is optimistically aiming for? an April 2020 launch.

Here comes the science part...

The technical specifications for Platinum Games' remaster of The Wonderful 101 have been added to the official Kickstarter page. According to the new info, Platinum is aimi??ng to have the returning title running at 1080p and?? 60 frames-per-second on all platforms.

In an incredible, whistle-stop week, Platinum announced that it would be utilising Kickstarter to get the long-requested remaster off the ground. The crowdfunding campaign began on February 3 with a relatively humble starting target of $50,000 USD. Mere days later, the figure now stands at well over a millio??n dollars, with 29 days still remaining on the clock?.

This figure guarantees that The Wonderful 101: Remastered will now see the light of day on Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC, and will also include bonus extras such as a Time Attack mode. A small push would pop the $1??.5 million mark and also unlock all-new 2D side adventure, "Luka's First Mission." To say the Kickstarter campaign has been a resounding success would be an understatement.

The technical specifications are as follows:

Switch:
Resolution: Portable 720p / Docked 1080p
FPS: Targeted 60fps

PS4:
Resolution: PS4 1080p / PS4 Pro 2160p
FPS: Targeted 60fps

Steam:
Resolution: 1080p with Super Wide monitor support planned
FPS: Targeted 60fps

While there is no specific release date for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, Platinum notes that it has penciled in April 2020 as a tentative laun??ch window.

Switch now, and possibly on PC and PS4 too

Platinum's beloved-yet-overlooked Wonderful 101 is being remastered on Switch. That statement is technically a little presumptuous, but it'll probably end up accurate before I'm don??e writing this article.

Originally published by Nintendo and released on the Wii U in 2013, Platinum is now turning to crowdfunding for a Switch remaster. The bar is super low, though. Platinum is only asking for $50,000 to make it happen; mere minutes after the campaign went up, it's already sitting at $26,000 as of time of writing. So yeah, The Wonderful 101 is coming to Switch. [Update: It's already well over $50,000.]

Other platforms are in the mix too. The Kickstarter's stretch goals include a PC release on Steam if $250,000 is raised, and a PS4 port if it hits $500,000. The Wonderful 101 is a strong cult classic, and this campaign is off to a blazing start; both of these stretch goals are a good bet. [Update 2: It hit $250,000 within an hour, meaning the PC port is officially going to happen.] [Update 3: And...it has now passed $500?,000, so we officially have a PS4 port too. That clears out all the current stretch goals, but Platinum has added a time attack mode at $1 million, and Luka's First Mission which is "a brand new 2D side-scrolling adventure starring a young hero" at $1.5 m?illion.]

In terms of contribution tiers, $36 will net you a digital copy when it releases; bumping it up to $41 will get you a physical copy. There are many tiers, all the way up to $5,000, but one of th??e more eye-popping rewards comes at $102. That's where Platinum's famed director Hideki Kamiya will block you on Twitter.

Also of note, the Kickstarter pegs the reward delivery date as April 2020. If this is accurate, that'd mean?? the remaster is already? nearly finished. In that sense, this campaign serves more as an elaborate pre-order venture for the Switch version, while drumming up funding for the eventual ports.

The Wonderful 101's remaster also clears up a bit of other Platinum-tinged mystery from this morning. Platinum's "4" website turns out to be referencing some sort of four-pronged initiative. The Switch remaster of Wonderful 101 is merely part one?. Stay tuned for the oth??er three.

'Okami is going to be back!'

Developer Ikumi Nakamura (who rose to internet super-stardom following a memorable appearance at E3 this year) has tweeted her desire to make a brand new game based on the mystical - and much beloved - Japanese franchise Okami. The new tweet sees Nakamura stood alongside industry veteran Hideki Kamiya, who directed the original Okami for PlayStation 2 back in 2006.

"Okami is going to be back" states Kamiya simply, offering a big thumbs up. "Really?" inquires Nakamura, with Kamiya nodding in confirmation. Nakamura then leaves the frame, presumably to START MAKING THE GAME RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK... Well, perhaps not, but given the adjoining text, which reiterates Nakamura's excitement at the possibility of a new Okami title, it looks like there's reason ??enough fo?r fans to keep the hope fires burning.

Also of note, this wonderful photograph.

Hideki Kamiya is the ultimate Ninja-Kid

They say that three things are inevitable in life: Death, taxes and Hamster re-releases. In fact the retro-loving publisher has been so d?ogged in its efforts to bring classic arcade and Neo Geo titles to modern platform?s, that it is bagged itself a World Record for its efforts.

Awarded at last week's Tokyo Game Show, Guinness World?? Records recognised Hamster Corporation for the most consecutive weekly releases on the N??intendo eShop, currently standing at 133 and counting. These releases, (which I've personally found myself recording every week for almost three years now) include classics from the golden era of arcades, alongside a string of fantastic Neo Geo fighting games and shmups.

To be fair, Hamster set out this battle plan a long time ago, openly announcing in 2017 that it hope??s to re-release at least 800 games in all. Hopefully, we'll see the company push a little further into the late '80s and early '90s with their Arcade Archive release, bringing a se?lection of some of that era's entertaining and memorable titles.

Also, in related news, Hideki Kamiya of Resident Evil and PlatinumGames fame also picked up his own World Record after attaining the highest score on Arcade Archive's release of 1984 platformer Ninja-Kid. Kamiya notched up an impressive 158,680 in Caravan Mode, demonstrating that even industry legends can find ??time to rock the classics.

Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Ammy (Amaterasu) or Wonder Red

Famed producer/director Hideki Kamiya has had his hand in a ton of iconic works over the years, and this recent fan Twitter poll proves it. Asking "which [character] do you want for Smash," Kamiya provides the following options: Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Ammy (Okami) and Wonder Red (Wonderful 101).

Now it's been intimated that the five fighter pass DLC characters (four really, since Joker was revealed) have already been picked. Either Kamiya knows something we don't, is having a bit of fun, or he's gearing up to pitch an idea to someone: after all, there could easily be more Smash Ultimate DLC on the way. Right ?now Dante is dominating with nearly 40% of the vote, followed by Ammy at 25%, Viewtiful Joe at 21% and Wonder Red at 15%.

Given that Bayonetta is (still) in Smash, anything is possible, really. While Kamiya probably doesn't h?ave the power to make it happen himself, as a highly re??spected producer and director, he is in the position to argue for or against a potential guest character. The only real holdup is Capcom (Dante, Viewtiful Joe, Amaterasu) for all but Wonder Red.

Tears of joy or sorrow?

Capcom's upcoming Devil May Cry 5 will be releasing on March 8, 2019. Along with the news, a new trailer from Gamescom has come out and it looks promising. I kind of dismissed DMC5 after E3 (the art style is really not doing ?it for me), but the actual gameplay looks reminiscent of the classic seri?es.

For starters, Nero has the power to freeze time, which is always cool. I'm also digging the terrible music (a series staple) and highly destructible environments. The boss battles look seriously big, too, which is just bringing back memories of throwing my controller in the PS2 days. Maybe I was a bit?? too hasty in my dismissal of this game.

Oh yeah, Dante rips his bike in half and uses it as dual wield chainsaw swords. I'm pretty sure this is the DMC we've been wanting for awhile.

Time to import for that sweet box

The upcoming Switch port of Okami HD has not been confirmed for a physical release in the US. In Japan, though, you can grab a regular or collectors edition that comes with a very snazzy box and cart. If you don't mind paying a little extra? for peace of mind, that Japanese version h??as an English localization on the cart.

Nintendo Soup has confirmed the news via some unnamed sources of theirs. Amazon Japan currently has the game available for pre-order for ¥2,636 standard and ¥4,309 collectors, thou?gh you'll need an Amazon Japan account to actually order from the??re. There still is a chance that Capcom may release a physical copy, but we would have likely heard of it by now.

Let Nintendo know you want it too

Last year, Platinum Games tweeted an image that very clearly teased The Wonderful 101 for Nintendo Switch. It seemed like an announcement was coming a??nd fan??s got excited about the possibility of having one of the Wii U's overlooked gems make more of a name for itself on Switch.

Except, nothing has come of that tease -- at least not? yet.

Today during a Reboot Develop 2018 talk about Platinum's past and future with action games, director Hideki Kamiya said he was "super proud" to be able to make The Wonderful 101. Through a translator, he asked the audience who had p?layed it before. A not-insignificant number of hands shot up in response. Kamiya joked?? that he assumed "only about six people on the planet had ever played."

He then expressed interest in a Switch release, but it would have to go through Nintendo. So, Kamiya asked for more audience participation: would we buy it??? If so, clap. (Almost) everyone did.

With the Bayonetta games making it over to Switch, it really seems like 101 should be next.

A picture paints a thousand words

Hideki Kamiya is a strange and interesting man. When he's not busy being the vice president of Platinum Games or randomly blocking people on Twitter, he's at the helm of some of the best action-adventure games in the industry. Prior to his time at Platinum, he worked at Capcom on the Resident Evil games, before being made director of a planned spin-off series now known as Devil May Cry.

This is important, because in 2004 when Clover Studio was founded and the staff started on Viewtiful Joe 2, they also began work on Okami -- with Kamiya directing it. Originally, Okami was conceived as a simpl?e minute-long tech demo of a wolf running while leaving a trail of flowers behind it. Capcom showed interest in making this a full-fledged game, with the premise built around “depicting nature.”

Once development bega??n though, the premise of simply "depicting nature" was too boring for Kamiya and they instead focused on making Okami an action-adventure game in the same vein as Zelda. The actual task however of replicating the Zelda formula is a huge endeavor in and of itself. But??, not only? did Kamiya and Clover Studio completely nail that formula, in my opinion, they created a game that rivals -- if not exceeds -- any Zelda game prior to it and one that would forever cement Kamiya's status in the industry like no other before it.

Okami HD (PS4, Xbox One, PC [Reviewed], PS3)
Developer: Clover Studio, HexaDrive
Publisher: Capcom
Release: December 12, 2017
MSRP: $19.99

Set in the land of Nippon, with a heavy?? emphasis on Japanese folklore, Okami tells the tale of a white wolf deity named Amaterasu and her little bug artist companion Issun. To keep things brief, an eight-headed demon has been awoken after 100 years and (of course) has spread darkness and bad vibes across the land. So, it's up to Amaterasu to gather all the celestial brush techniques to become powerful enough to stop it and save the land.

If you can get past the painfully long 20-minute introduction, you're gonna be in for one hell of an adventure spanning a little over 30 hours with the most memorable cast of characters I've had the joy of encountering in recent memory. That goes for everyone from Susano, who believes he's the greatest warrior in the land and constantly attempts to save the day (when in reality Amaterasu does all ?the work), to even minor characters you might come across, such as a possessed old woman with kni?ves who wants to chop you up and turn you into wolf-stew.

Okami's quirky cast of characters alone kept me progressing, simply because I was interested in who I'd m?eet next. Overall, the?? story does have some pacing issues, especially with its stop-start momentum, constantly leaving you guessing if the game is actually over or not. But, easily the most redeeming (and obvious) quality of Okami is simply how gorgeous this game looks, thanks to its uniquely cel-shaded ukiyo-e inspired art style.

If you want a more detailed breakdown of the PC-specific release of Okami HD, be sure to check out my review-in-progress. In short though: this release now supports 4K resolutions, but is still capped at 30 FPS due to game-specific things such as collision detection and animation speeds being broken at hi??gher frame rates. It's disappointing that this version still doesn't support 60 FPS, however, I never felt like I was hindered in anyway due to the frame rate.

Originally, Okami was intended to be rendered in a photo-realistic 3D style. However, due to the hardware limitations of the PlayStation 2 at the time, this concept was scrapped in favor of the aforementioned ukiyo?-e inspired cel-shaded art style. This eye-catching aesthetic only benefited Okami in the long run, as it still easily holds the test of time, even today, thanks to its unique art ??direction -- now only bolstered with HD resolutions.

Ironically, if they went with ?the photo-realistic ro?ute as originally intended, Okami would have i?mmediately looked dated within half a year thanks to the PlayStation 3 se?t to release that same year.

It's not only the aesthetic of Okami that holds up so well, but also the gameplay thanks to the unique Celesti??al Brush mechanics that make up the core experience and backbone of Amaterasu's abilities.

Throughout your adventure, Amaterasu will unlock various brush techniques that range from restoring objects in the environment for puzzle-solving, to?? combat abilities, such as cutting away at opponents or creating bombs to use on enemies or uncover new areas. The C?elestial Brush also helps with traversal, allowing you to create lily pads to get across water or even change the time of day.

As you progress, you'll unlock most of these techniques in various dungeons that you'll then use on accompanying bosses, which is ?obvious?ly where a lot of the Zelda comparisons come in. But, where Zelda has Link utilize various tools he finds on his journey, Okami has you instead remembering different brush strokes with the Celestial Brush -- which feels all the more satisfying and unique with the? PlayStation Move controls on PS4 and even more so with the mouse on PC.

It's a brilliant mechanic that? literally draws the line on where it differentiates itself from Zelda and other action-adventure games in general. Thr?ow all this in with a gorgeous art style, a classically intertwined Japanese ??soundtrack, and memorable characters and writing, and you have one of the best games from the PlayStation 2 still going strong over a decade and two console generations later.

Aside from a few minor gripes and this re-release of the game not offering much else from the 2012 PlayStation 3 re-release (other than higher resolutions and the return of loading screen mini-games), Okami HD is still a near-perfect game. If you haven't alread??y beaten or played it yet, then now is a better time than ever before...

...Unless you're ??waiting for? a Nintendo Switch port.

Amaterasu is still lookin' good

Truth be told, I've never beaten Okami. I've played it twice over in the past, first on the Nintendo Wii and got about halfway through the game, around that same time though, I got a Pl?ayStation 3 and simply never found myself returning to finish it. Then with the PlayStation Network release in 2012, the same result ensued; I got about halfway through it and ended up getting distracted by another game altogether, never finding myself coming back to it.

Perhaps third time's a charm?

Okami HD (PC [reviewed], PS4, Xbox One, PS3)
Developer: Clover Studio, HexaDrive
Publisher: Capcom
Release: December 12, 2017
MSRP: $19.99

With the massive critical acclaim Okami has ga??rnered over the years, I feel pretty guilty about never actually having beaten the game. Thankfully, now I have no excuses. But, if there is still one major takeaway I've had in my roughly eight hours or so of playing the game so far on PC, it's how gorgeous this game still looks, considering it was origin?ally released on the PlayStation 2.

Okami HD is another example of how a game with a distinct art style will always look better in the long run, than a game simply attempting rea??lism, because in terms of graphical prowess, there will always be something more “realistic” within a couple of years. Meanwhile, Okami's cel-shaded art style still looks incredible and holds the test of time, an art style that utilizes thick black outlines and is heavily ins??pired by Japanese water coloring and woodcarving techniques known as Ukiyo-e.

Mind you, all of this in an HD resolution certainly helps, playing Okami again all these years later in a native 1080p resolution really showcases what I mentioned above. This particular release of the game also supports a 4K resolution on PC, PlayStation 4 Pro, and Xbox One X. So, if you're lucky enough to have a 4K monitor or TV setup, then you can't go wrong with having Okami HD being a showpiece.

Although, I am a bit disappointed the framerate on this now third re-release of the game, over a decade later no less, is still locked at 30 FPS. Capcom had this to say regarding the choice to lock the framerate:

“We actually experimented with 60FPS and uncapped frame ??rate mode, but unfortunately it breaks the game logic, collision detection, and animation speed in certain areas of the game. The reality is that it would take a Herculean? effort, time, and cost to manually fix and QA by trial and error since we’re working with legacy code from PlayStation 3 that was originally intended with 30FPS in mind.”

As for the PC version in particular, I am also a? bit disappointed in terms of the amount of graphical customization at your disposal. There is no specific options for basic things such as anti-aliasing or draw distance (the game still has loads of pop-in issues, even on the highest settings), it all ??just boils down to a tab labeled “Graphics Settings” -- with the only options being: low, medium, and high. Chances are, what you'll be getting on PC on the highest setting, is going to be no different than what you're getting on current consoles. Which is to be expected for an 11 year old game, but the lack of deeper graphical settings may disappoint PC enthusiasts none the less.

Notably, I also couldn't seem to get my PlayStation 4 controller working on th??e PC release of the game, either natively, or with third party software, despite my controller working fine on other games and ended up just sticking wit?h the mouse and keyboard. Which at first, I dreaded the thought of, but the moment I was able to use the Celestial Brush with the mouse, it immediately felt natural and instantly became my proffered method -- even over the Wii Remote and PlayStation Move motion controls.

That said, I'm not exactly crazy about the default key-mappings, such as &l?dquo;Backspace” being utilized as the cancel option, thankfully you can still re-map keys. Using both the right and left mouse buttons for combat also took me a few moments to adjust, but soon afterwards, felt natural as well. Notably, all the in-game menus of the game also don't support the mouse, so you'll have to navigate them with the keyboard.

Aside from this, after playing the PC version for a short time, I genuinely think the PC controls are my new preferred way of playing Okami overall, simply for how well the Celestial??? Brush translates to the mouse and how natural it feels to use. Okami HD's PC port ?does come ?off feeling rather lazy overall, especially when compared to other Capcom releases on PC, take for example Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, which had a host of graphical options for its PC?? release last yea?r.

But, if more re-releases of Hideki Kamiya'??s masterpiece on other platforms potentially? lead? to a proper sequel one day (yes, I know Okamiden was a thing) -- then I'm all for it. For those of you curious about my full opinion on the game overall though, then stay tuned as I continue my journey into collecting all ?13 Celestial Brush techniques and beating the game for my full review. (Expect a video review as well!)

I'm your prom date

Hideki "BLOCKED" Kamiya is legendary in more ways than one. Many (myself included) like his approach to action games, and are constantly awaiting his next project. Speak?ing to Dengeki PlayStation, Kamiya threw out a few ideas:

“I want to work on a Devil May Cry and Viewtiful Joe remake, or a true sequel for Okami. A cooperation with Dante (from Devil May Cry) and Bayonetta might also be fun. Dear Cap??com, i?f it’s okay with someone like me, I will help anytime. Best regards. Everyone, bow down your heads with me!”

They're all noble causes, and all things that could happen. Capcom loves remakes, especially for proven IP like Devil May Cry (Viewtiful might be a harder sell, but given its appearance in Dead Rising 4 recently there's hope). The Okami remaster is coming sooon and sales could possibly spur a sequel, and that Dante vs. Bayonetta concept could come to life on a Switch version of Super Smash Bros., given that Bayonetta is?? already a cast member and Capcom has a good relationship with Nintendo (and Mega Man is in).

I mean, never say never! Who would have thought that Cloud, ?Bayonetta, Sonic, and Mega Man would be in the same game 10 years ago?
