When game development legends Suda51 and Swery65 team up for something, you know it's gonna be wacky. And likely exceptionally violent. Sadly, we won't see the fruits of the collaboration until next year. Their game, Hotel Barcelona, has been quietly delayed until "early 2025."

Swery revealed the news in an interview with Gamereactor. Hotel Barcelona was originally planned to launch in 2021 but got pushed to late 2024. Dela?ys in game development aren't un??common (we've seen a fair number over the years), so hearing that it's getting held back just a bit longer shouldn't be shocking. According to Swery, the move was made to give the game a bit more touching up.

"Right now, we're bug checking the game? and we want to keep polishing it and making it better," Swery tells Gamereactor. "But ideally, we want to release the game in early 2025."

White Owls released a gameplay trailer for the game in 2023 to?? mixed results. We said it looked "pretty rough," and viewer comments on YouTube seemed to agree. The gameplay seemed fine for a 2D hack-and-slash game, but visually there was plenty of room for improvement.

The following year, the studio dropped a new trailer and gameplay preview out of nowhere during the Indie Live Expo 2024. Hotel Barcelona had been baking for about a year at that point, but I can't say for sure if it was looking any better. The footage bitrate isn't quite up to par with an official trailer, so the blurriness may not be the game's f??ault. Either way, it looks cool and, yes, i??ncredibly violent.

Regardless, I'm still looking forward to seeing how the game fares. As a former frequent enjoyer of Swery65 and Suda51 games, I'm hoping their super-powered fusion doesn't disappoint. It's up in the air, though. Deadly Premonition, D4, and Lollipop Chainsaw are famous for being very rough, yet al??l boast an unmist?akable charm that attracts a niche fanbase. I mean...

Hotel Barcelona is a hack-and-slash Metroidvania that stars a federal marshal, possessed by the ghost of a serial killer named Dr. Carnival??, who must kill other serial killers and escape the eponymous hotel. So, yeah. That's a weird enough elevator pitch to arrest my attention. Hopefully, the goofy premise isn't wasted when the game launches next year for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

During today's Indie Live Expo 2024, Hotel Barcelona, a game in development with the renowned creators Swery and Suda51 studios, received a brand new trailer and a gameplay demo that details exactly what you can expect w?he??n the game launches later this year for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Hotel Barcelona got its first trailer late last year, dividing fans with its intriguing concept that's juxtaposed by harsh visuals that would look more at home on the Nintendo Wii. The game is the result of an original idea by Suda51 but written and directed by Swery. The concept of the game is as bonkers as you might expect from the creators of Lollipop Chainsaw, The Good Life, and No More Heroes 3. It's a time-looping horror action title where you face off against serial killers and aliens inspired by?? slasher films.

In Hotel Barcelona, up to four ghost characters can help you each time you die and jump back into the world. These characters are based on your past runs, but the enemy placement in the world will change every time you jump in, meaning you've got to work with yourself if you want to beat the game. Protagonist Justine has an insane serial? killer living inside of her, and she's got to slash her way through every serial killer in the US who has all gathered at a luxurious hotel just outside of Pittsburgh.

The style on show in the gameplay demo is amazing, pulling together Suda51's comic bo?ok and video game visuals with classic slasher movie posters. Every boss is an experience packed with a character inspired by some sort of villain, be it a killer alien or a murderous baseball player.

The game looks like it'll subvert every expectation you have for it, with giant metal sharks, a huge alien monster, and superpowers that transform the player character into a raging monster that clears the field. I love the 2.5D view, and I think it's a great fit with the incredible Metroidvanias we've had in 2024 so far, such as Tales of Kenzera: Zau and Animal Well.

The most recent game I've played from either creator behind Hotel Barcelona is The Good Life, a slice-of-lif??e title about a journalist who can also transfor??m into an animal to help solve problems around the village they've become trapped in. I'm looking forward to jumping into this demo today to get another taste of that zany style that you just can't get anywhere else.

White Owls Inc. has shown off a new trailer for the long-anticipated Hotel Barcelona, a collaboration between Deadly Premonition’s Swery65 and No More Heroes�Suda51. It’s, um, not looking so hot.

The trailer starts off by telling us that Hotel Barcelona is written and directed by Swery65 and “original idea�by Suda51, which could mean any number of things. Considering the premise invol?ves facing off with a series o??f serial killers, you can definitely locate Suda51’s idea.

I consider myself a fan of both Swery65 and Suda51, but this trailer is kind of repellent. The graphics have this ugly blurry look that reminds me of a Wii title, the?? animations are uneven, and the voice acting is a little concerning. The gameplay looks a little routine, though the idea of playing side-by-side with your previous failed attempts is pretty cool. I’m interested to see how that turns out.

At least the HUD looks cool.

To be fair, most of Swery and Suda’s games are ugly. The actual gameplay an mechanics are typically a little shaky, as well. I prefer their approaches to storytelling, with each having the capacity to write extremely deep and unique characters. The trailer doesn’t really show Hotel Barcelona’s storytelling approach, nor do we see any real character interaction, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t there. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. It would be a real challenge for me not to play a Swery65 and Suda51 joint.

Hotel Barcelona is coming to Xbox, PS5, and PC sometime in 2024.

Further fuel has been added to the rumor ?fire concerning Suda51, Swery65, and an as-yet-unannounced horror project allegedly involving both �As whispers ?persist that the developers may be joining forces for a grim new video game, some newly-filed trademarks add further possibility to the supposed project.

As spotted by VGC, White Owls, (the studio h??elmed by Hidetaka “Swery 65�Suehiro), recently secured international trademarks for both "Hotel Barcelona" and "Death Game Hotel". Both terms had been previously secured for use in Japan back in March of this year, and while all has been quiet in regard to any such game, these new, international filings would suggest that the project is still at the forefront of the developers' minds.

"Hotel Barcelona" is, seemingly, a placeholder name for a project that Goichi "Suda51" Suda has wanted to develop alongside Swery65 for some time. The project was initially referenced during an IGN live stream back in 2019, where it came across as an improvised, pie-in-the-sky idea. Since then, however, various clues have pointed to the possibility that the game is, in fact, in development. Just last week, for example, a behind-the-scenes video shot at Suda's Grasshopper Manufacturer studio showed an artist working on some grotesque monsters.

Regardless, both dev??elopers remain tight-lipped as to what Hotel Barcelona is, whether it is definitely in the works, or when we'll be hearing more about it. It's a tantalizing prospect, at any rate. We shall see.
