A solid showing of indie games

Microsoft held their ID@Xbox Showcase today showing off the lineup of upcoming indie games heading to P?C, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. We got a good look at some promising-looking indie games that are coming out over the next year.?? Alongside world premieres we also got a few surprise today releases.

Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients

Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients is third person action adventure RPG about a mysterious powerful monolith threatened by dark forces. Embark on a dangerous adventure with the power of the Runic Swarm and crush minions of evil on your path to save the planet. Monolith is coming in 2024 on Xbox?? One and Xbox Series X|S.

Hellboy Web of Wyrd

Hellboy Web of Wyrd is an upcoming action-brawler-roguelite where you can punch, dodge, and blast your way through the mysterious Web of Wyrd as the comic-favorite Hellboy. While no exacty timeframe was given, Hellboy Web of Wyrd is coming soon to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.

Everspace 2

Space action RPG Everspace 2 will finally be leaving e??arly acce?ss and receives a full launch on August 15, 2023 on Xbox Series X|S. It is also a Day 1 on Game Pass title. Though it wasn't mentioned, we also know it's releasing on PS5 the same day. The full release will feature a 30+ hour main campaign story that is fully voiced in English and German.

Sea of Stars

We got another look at the Sea of Stars announcement trailer that was released a few months ago. The turn-based RPG inspired by the classics still looks as beautiful as ever. Sea of Stars tells the story of two Children of the Solstice who combine powers of sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic and fight back the evil Fleshmancer. Sea of Stars features special guest composer Yasunori Mitsuda who is well known for his music in Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, and Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The retro ??RPG will release on August 29 and will be day 1 on Game Pass. A d?emo is out now on Xbox.

Solace State

Take on the role of a young hacker confronting political plots in Solace State. The visual novel-style game claims choices will be important as you build relationships and support communities attempting to revolutionize against a corporate biotech conspiracy. Solace State is coming this summer to Xbox One and Xbox Serie?s X|S.

Worldless

Timejinx and Hypnotorious were revealed as two of the five games coming in Jackbox Party Pack 10. We've already seen Tee K.O. 2 and FixyText revealed as two of the other games, meaning we're still waiting on one more. Jackbox Party Pack 10 releases this fall on all major platforms.

Roman Sands RE:Build

This is a very unique-looking title. Roman Sands RE:Build is a delirium-charged journey into an apocalypse. Play through a variety of genres including visual novel, adventure, puzzle, horror, and survival simulation games. Roman Sands RE:Build? is coming to Xbox? One and Xbox Series X|S in Winter 2023.

Scarlet Deer Inn

Scarlet Deer Inn is a narrative platformer featuring an emotional story and an interesting cast of characters. Explore a dark dungeon full of monsters and branching dialogue options where all character's animation frames have actually been embroidered. Furthermore, all backgrounds have been hand-painted. The Studio Ghibli-inspired Scarlet Deer Inn is coming to Xbox Series X|S but no ??release timeframe ju?st yet.

Rain World: Downpour

Second Wave

Wait, this isn't an Overwatch skin pack? Apparently not. Second Wave is a free-to-play online multiplayer hero-based shooter MOBA in the world of Armantia. Choose from Domination or 3-Way Battle as you fight other heroes and exiles in an endless war for the Arcane Stone. Second Wave is com??ing to Xbox Series X|S but no release time??frame was given.

Vampire Survivors

Even though it was revealed a couple of weeks ago, we got another look at the Vampire Survivors couch co-op mode. Dust off your couch and jump into the bullet hell Vampire Survivors with up to four total players. The new mode is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass on A?ugust 17.

Axiom Verge 2

You can now explore the award-winning alien world of Axiom Verge 2 on Xbox. Our very own Eric Van Allen thought this was a beautiful Metroid-style game so it's definitely worth checking out. Stray Souls

Ok, this probably has to be the best reveal of the showcase in my opinion. Stray Souls is a creepy-looking indie game that looks like a mix between Silent Hill and Resident Evil. The spooky third-person shooter features new music by legendary Silent Hill composer Akira Yamaoka. Stray Souls hits Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S in Fall 2023.

Birth

I'll be honest, Birth definitely looked unique but I wasn't too sure exactly what I had just seen by the time the trailer was over. Apparently, it's an adventure puzzle game about constructing a creature from spare bones and organs you find around a city. The art is hand-drawn and the gameplay involves you solving physics-based puzzles as you discover secrets around town. Birth releases on Xbox One on July 28.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Like the film, Texas Chain Saw Massacre is a game based on true events. Try to survive in this insanely chaotic survival game when it releases on Augu??st 18 on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It will also be a day 1 Game Pass release.

The Making of Karateka

Based on the 1984 martial arts action game by Jordan Mechner, The Making of Karateka is an interactive documentary that also includes four pixel-perfect versions of Karateka. It will also feature an all-new remastered version of the game with new features. The Making of Karateka releases later this year on Xbox Series X|S.

A bunch of new games to keep on your radar

Today, ID@Xbox and Twitch Gaming spotlighted some up-and-coming games to look out for. The showcase ranged from ghosts and magic to turnips robbing a ban?k. It was wild.

There were plenty of cool?? games to see and interesting projects either revealed or more greatly detailed. And a bunch of them are coming to Game Pass as well, making for a good weekend binge candidate when they arrive.

In order to keep track of all of them, we've put together this handy recap. It makes it a bit easier? to scroll through them, catch back up, or find that one you're looking to wishlist.

Highlights from the ID@Xbox Fall Showcase

• Eville is a multiplayer social deduction game, shown off by Black Girl Gamers on the pre-stream, where players have to unmask the conspirator among the group. It's hitting Game Pass on October 11 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

• Turn-based battle fans will probably like Born of Bread from WildArts Studio, where a flour golem can take on different abilities and meet a ton of characters. No release window set just yet.
• Moonscars is a 2D action game with some Souls vibes, but some cool mechanics around its progression and death. I got to demo this at PAX East earlier this year, and am interested to see how the whole thing comes together. Moonscars hits Game Pass on September 27, which isn't too far off either.
• Valheim, the Viking game that's enabled many terrible ideas of mine, is coming to PC Game Pass on September 29. It'll hit Game Pass for Xbox once it launches on Xbox, sometime in 2023.
• Homestead Arcana is a gorgeous-looking magical adventure from Skybound Games and Serenity Forge. It has you growing, cultivating, crafting, and creating. And wow, does it have a look. That's coming "soon" to PC and Xbox Series X|S, and will be headed to Game Pass.

• Song of Iron 2 mashes steel and dark fantasy together for another stylish side-scrolling adventure. A demo's available if you check out the link in the new teaser.
• Explore a new life of crime as Turnip Boy escalates his bad deeds. No longer content with just tax evasion, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank sees, well, Turnip Boy robbing a bank. Hopefully this battle with the vegetal police goes well for him. The heist kicks off on PC and console in 2023, and is coming to Game Pass.
• We got a look at some Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, an asymmetrical ghost-nabbing video game.
• Ynglet is a game that's currently available and has just sailed under my radar until I saw it in the ID@Xbox showcase. It's mesmerizingly gorgeous, with sights and sounds melding together into an almost hypnotic experience, even just watching it. Ynglet has been kicking around for a bit and is apparently out now, and now you know that too. It's on Steam and Xbox for just $4.99.

Xbox and Twitch are hosting a new showcase for indies

A new ID@Xbox showcase is on the way. Xbox and Twitch are collaborating to spotl?ight a h?eaping helping of indie news on Wednesday, September 14 in the ID@Xbox Fall Showcase.

The event will air on Twitch, both through the /twitchgaming and Xbox channels.

Prior to the showcase, Black Girl Gamers will host a pre-show featuring the upcoming multiplayer deception game Eville. That will start at 9:30 a.m. PT / 12:30 p.m. ET, on the Black Girl Gamers, Twitch Gaming, and Xbox channels.

Then, the main showcase will start at 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET. Xbox says it's expected to run? for over ?90 minutes, and it will be open to co-streaming.

What's new in the world of indies

As for what to expect, ID@Xbox has already announced a few title appearing in the showcase. Metal: Hellsinger and You Suck at Parking will be in attendance, as will gameplay for the upcoming Ghostbuster: Spirits Unleashed.

There's also going to be announcements, trailers, deep dives and developer interviews. There will also probably ??be a fair amount of games announced as coming to Gam?e Pass.

Traditionally, these showcases have spotlighted some pretty cool stuff. The ID@Xbox showcase this last March, for example, had Half Mermaid's Immortality, the fun escape room sim Escape Academy, and the powerbomb-RPG WrestleQuest.

It's safe to say that something here will probably pop up an?d surprise someone. If you're looking at the fall games lineup and not really seeing anything that strikes your fancy, this might be worth a watch. You never know when a neat indie game might come out of nowhere and surprise you.

The indie gaming side of Xbox is hosting another demo event this year, the ID@??Xbox Summer Game Fest Demo event. Starting June 21, the ID@Xbox team says it ?will have over 30 demos of upcoming games playable on Xbox.

These demos will be up from June 21 through the 27th, so be sure to check them out while the window's open. And ID@Xbox notes that these demos are not the average demos you'd usually see on stores. While those usually come from fairly completed games, the ones in ID@Xbox are more akin to "show ?floor demos" you might catch at PAX or something. Basically, these are early-stage projects, so be constructive if things seem a little rough.

Xbox has highlighted some of ?the games arriving in this demo eve??nt, including:

• Batora: Lost Haven: An isometric action game where you journey through colorful planets and fight to save Earth using your physical and mental superpowers.
• Broken Pieces: A time-based thriller that seems ideal for Control fans, where you have to solve the mystery of this bizarre French village.
• Severed Steel: One for the blood-pumping FPS fans, it's got bullet-time and destructible environments.
• Tinykin: A Pikmin-style game that we've had our eye on for a while, with an incredible look and tons of little helpers.

Dozens of demos galore

It's already been a pretty good summer for demos. The Steam Next Fest is on right now, and there are a ton of upcoming projects to discover and add to your wishlist there.

Last year's ID@Xbox demo event had some pretty great hands-on previews in the lineup too. Games like Tunic, Lake, Sable, and more were all part of the 2021 demo fest. These are worth giving a shot, especially if you're looking for tha?t next ?big indie to watch.

There were golfers, snowboarders, and even half-mermaids

Microsoft and Twitch partnered up to deliver another ID@Xbox showcase today, in partnership with Twitch Gaming. The showcase highlighted new games, updates on anticipated titles, and of course, plenty of futur????e Game Pass games.

We saw some cool new games like action RPG Flintlock, wrestling RPG Wrestle Quest, and escape room adventure Escape Academy. I'll never get stuck in a room again. Whalefall from Whitethorn Games seems right up my alley—a Suikoden and Lord of the Rings-inspired SR??PG with great art and plummeting sky whales.

Her Story creator Sam Barlow and Half Mermaid showed off more of Immortality, ??which will see investigative players diving through lost movies to discover what happened to a missing film sta?r. It's due out this summer, and coming to Game Pass.

Plus, there were some previously announced titles like Tunic�a href="//jbsgame.com/reviews/review-tunic-pc-x??box-souls??like-finji-indie-game/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">out today—and the console version of Crusader Kings III. Not quite as dark as Super Fire Pro's story mode

During today's Xbox Indie Showcase, publisher Skybound Games and indie outfit Mega Cat revealed WrestleQuest a fun-looking new title that will blend the 16-bit RPG adventures of yesteryear with some of pro wrestli?ng's most legenda??ry in-ring performers.

Developed by Pittsburgh-based indie outfit Mega Cat Studios, WrestleQuest will put players in the spandex singlet of a budding young wrestler, as they embark upon their dream of becoming the biggest superstar that the business has ever known. As they pick their way through the terrifying backstage politics of a pro-wrestling locker room, our hero will find help and inspiration from a roster of licens??ed legends, including "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Jeff Jarrett, Andre the Giant, The Road Warriors, and Diamond Dallas Page (who I assume will be on-hand to crack your back).

WrestleQuest will combine the narrative adventure of old-school RPGs with turn-based in-ring action, as the player makes a name for themselves in the glory days of Sports Entertainment. In keeping with its old-school themes, WrestleQuest is rendered in cool pixel visuals, reminiscent of the glorious 16-bit era. James Deighan, the founder of Mega Cat, says that the team grew up lovin' wrestling, and hopes that WrestleQuest will cap?ture the wild and colorful h?alcyon days of both wrestling and video gaming.

It's a really fun concept, and having an array of licensed stars featured in-game will really help to put the title on the map. If you aren't feeling the current trend of wrestling sims, then perhaps WrestleQuest will encourage you to climb back into the ring �in an altogether different manner �when ?it steps through the curtain later this summer on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch platfor??ms.

This Is Not An Exit

During today's Xbox Indie Showcase, we got to check ou??t an intriguing new puzzle adventure - pub??lished by iam8bit Presents and based upon those "escape room" activities that you hope and pray you won't be invited to when Amy from finance announces her leaving 'do.

Developed by Coin Crew Games, Escape Academy will test the intuition and adaptation of teams of players as they attempt to solve myriad puzzles in order to escape a variety of strange confinements. Tackle brain-teasing conundrums that will require patienc??e under? pressure, lateral thinking, an eye for detail, and a nose for exploration.

Coin Crew has itself designed multiple real-life Escape Room scenarios, so fans can expect an authentic experience. Much like their IRL counterparts, Escape Academy will have a running narrative concerning ??a team of escapists in training, who find themselves in a high-stakes situation way beyond their initial expectations.

Escape Academy will ??launc?h in June on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. It will also be made available on Xbox Game Pass on launch day.

More indies get the spotlight in a new ID@Xbox stream

The indie games are taking the stage again next week. Xbox and Twitch?? are airing a new ID@Xbox showcase featuring updates and announcements centered around indepen?dent developers next week.

ID@Xbox and Twitch Gaming are airing the show on Wednesday, March 16 at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT. It will air on the Twitch Gaming and Xbox Twitch channels, and will also be open to co-streaming.

Updates, trailers, and gameplay are all on deck for the showcase, as well as some new announcements. Finji, the publisher behind Chicory: A Colorful Tale and Tunic, will be in attendance, as will Whitethorn. The first game from iam8bit's publishing label will also be revealed. The teams behind Shredders, Roblox, and other games will also have news to share.

The indie-focused shows are always an interesting time. More often than not, I'm surprised by something in the lineup, or find a new gem to keep an eye on. Showcases like these are where I first heard about neat projects like small-town mail delivery sim Lake and fishing RPG Moonglow Bay.

Even with a massive lineup like past showcases have had, there's a good chance that something in there will appeal to someone. Plus, odds are good that at least a few will go to Game Pass, and that's a win all around if you already have a subscription for ??Xbox ?or PC.

More than 35 "show floor"-style game demos will be playable from December 7�1

Not to pile more games on your already full plate, but you might want to set aside some time in December for a bunch of limited-time demos. Starting Tuesday, December 7, the ID@Xbox Winter Game Fest event will offer up 35+ demos for upcoming Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S games. You can also expect ??to see some limited-time PC dem?os, too.

For instance, Nobody Saves the World, the next title from Guacamelee studio Drinkbox, will get a demo on Xbox and Steam. It's the one I'm most interested in personally, and the demo will even have online co-op with access to "the opening hours of the game," which sounds great. It's an action-RPG with wild-looking forms and mix-and-match abilities.

The full ID@Xbox Winter?? Game Fest demo list isn't out yet (we'll update this article once it is), but here's a preview of several featured games courtesy of the event organizers:

• Death Trash â€?a fleshy post-apocalyptic RPG full of punks and unspeakable horrors.
• Loot River â€?a fantasy action roguelike title with a Tetris-style twist.
• The Tale of Bistun â€?an action-adventure game about a stone carver inspired by the Persian poem "Khosrow and Shirin."

"Many of these demos are early, and some are for games that won’t be out for quite some time," according to Xbox's Jessica Ronnell, the ID@Xbox event and community man?agement lead. "Think of these as akin to “show floor demos,�and not necessarily indicative of the final product. What that means is that you’ll get to experience these games early �some way early �which is awesome, but you should also note that these games ??will continue to evolve and be polished as they near release."

Again, these demos are time-limited �they'll "evaporat??e after December 21" �so this is our chance in a lot of cases. That said, some might return at a later date.

Some farms, skateboarding, and some weird science

Microsoft hosted another Twitch Gaming and ID@Xbox showcase today, spotlighting some of Xbox's upcoming in?dies. Across several ho??urs, it featured several notable indies, ranging from the unlaunched to those already out and coming to Game Pass.

Among the upcoming games, there were some neat-looking indies, like the cyberpunk action-platformer Aeon Drive and the previously showcased OlliOlli World. While I got a chance to look at the skateboarding of OlliOlli World a few months ago, today we got a look at customization in the game. Turns out, there's a lot of different ways to deck y?our skater out in sick gear.

The pencil-sketched adventure RPG Time: The Legend of Wright also looked pretty cool, and is set to arrive sometime this winter. And Lab Rat will subject you to test after test with a metrics-obsessed AI sometime in 2022, for fans of p?uzzle games and sadistic robots.

Of course, there are also some games coming to Xbox Game Pass that were confirmed during today's ID@Xbox stream. Library of Ruina is hitting Xbox Game Pass today, in what can best be described as a librarian battle sim. Collect books, gain knowledge, utilize your collection to win, and profit? I'm really interested to see how this one plays. Also, Stardew Valley is coming to Game Pass sometime this fall.

Remember, E3 now lasts 14 months

Xbox had so much that it wanted to talk about this year that it scheduled itself an Xtra slot to cram it all in. Kicking off in around 15 minutes, the Xbox Games Showcase Extended live stream will focus on some of the incoming titles missing from Sunday's presentation.

Players can expect updates on titles from Obsidian, Rare, Double Fine, Playground Games, and other studios. While it would be unwise to expect any major reveals or surprises, a lot of folks �yours truly included �will be very excited to hear/see new updates regarding the emotional and evocative Ninja Theory sequel, Senua's Saga: Hellblade II.

A whole lot of indies to try

Xbox has unveiled the lineup for its ID@Xbox Summer Game Demo Fest event this year, and it's a doozy. Alongside already announced games like Tunic, Lake, and Sable, there is a total of 40 demos to check out.

The demos are available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, starting today (June 15) and running through June 21. They're early looks at games, so they may not represent the final build, and keep in mind it's ID@Xbox; don't expect a Halo or Redfall in here.
