Gunk sat alone in a boggy marsh

The Industry's Chris Moyse and I often have conversations about reviewing games and routinely agree on the idea that the most difficult games to review are those middle-of-the-road, milquetoast titles. With games that you love or hate, it’s easy to find the words that articulate your feelings toward them. But when the experience is rather blah, the type of game that begins to evaporate from your memory the moment you put down the controller, that’s when this job is at its most frustrating. Because there are only so many eloquent ways you can say “eh, ’s’alright.�/p>

That’s where I am with The Gunk.

The Gunk takes place in the deep reaches of space on a desolate rock not yet populated and exploited by humans. Two scrappers, Ran??i and Becks, are drawn to the planet by the faintest of energy readings. Struggling to pay the loan they own on their ship, the two gamble their future and what little fuel they have left following that reading, hoping to score a huge payday and a chance to climb out of poverty.

Rani and Becks have a somewhat fractious relationship. As you take control of Rani and her trusty bionic vacuum arm she affectio??nately calls "Pumpkin", you’ll listen in on the conve?rsations the two have, learn a bit about their history, and see the seams that are slowly splitting between them. These two are not exactly in a good place, and the presence of the titular Gunk isn’t really helping things.

Neither is quite sure what the Gunk is or how it ended up on this planet, but they quickly learn it's strangling the life out of this rock. As Rani cle??ans up the Gunk with a suction ability, not unlike Luigi’s Poltergust 3000, the alien fauna of this planet springs to life and uncovers paths that will lead Rani to learn the truth of just what happened here.

Sucking up Gunk and listening to Rani and Becks bicker is how you’re going to spend a majority of your time with The Gunk. The developers at Image & Form have managed to craft an entire adventure around the concept of cleaning up this hazardous waste, and to its credit, there is something indescribably gratifying about va??cuuming up junk in video games. Cleaning up every little area ?on this planet to unlock the path to the next never really gets old, and the experience manages to feel rewarding throughout the few hours of this adventure with the way washed-out, pastel flora springs to life around you once the Gunk is gone.

Clearing out this slime isn’t all that troublesome initially, but the game does try to challenge you by introducing new forms of Gunk that don’t take too kindly to your spick-and-span ways. Rani can vacuum up her foes with P??umpkin, but she can also suck up objects?? that she can then throw at her enemies, or at switches within the game’s many puzzles.

It’s clear, from the great art direction to the well-developed characters, that developer Image & Form was shooting for the stars with its first 3D game. Unfortunately, The Gunk is never really able to escape the gravitational pull of “good enough.�The gameplay, the setting, and the story are all perfectly sound, but I never got the sense during this short adventure? that the developers were trying to take these elements and push them in new and interesting directions.

There’s really nothing you’re going to be doing in hour five that you didn’t already do in hour one. It’s fine that the developers wanted to craft a game around this central gimmick of vacuuming up Gunk, but it’s never explored beyond its most basic implementation. The addition of enemies and a boss battle to the formula does not improve things. If anything, their inclusion feels out of place to the rest of the experience. Hell, the G??unk doesn't even r??eally pose a threat, as I was able to walk through most of it without suffering any sort of negative repercussions.

I would be willing to overlook that if the rest of my journey ??provided me with some memorable moments, but on the whole, it’s pretty one-note. The puzzle solutions remain the same more-or-less through??out Rani’s quest, and the narrative features a bit too many familiar story beats and concepts to be considered original. One of Rani’s abilities lets her learn more about the world around her with a scanner, but this is woefully underutilized. And that’s a shame because I think this planet has a far more detailed history to it than the scant bits of info we’re allowed to learn.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with The Gunk. It works from a technical standpoint and it isn’t the worst way you can spen??d about five hours of your time. But I just can’t muster up any sort of authentic excitement about it. If it were funnier or cleverer or more challenging, I could maybe start to see it as a title I could recommend. But as it is, the best I can do is pay it that slightly backhanded compliment of saying it’s perfect for Game Pass.

The SteamWorld studio dives right into The Gunk

2021 is coming to a close, but The Gunk is sliding right under the wire. Today, Thunderful Games announced that The Gunk is coming to Xbox and PC on Dec. 16, and it will be on G?ame Pass at launch.

Announced during today's Thunderful World event, The Gunk is a new game from the SteamWorld developers Image & Form, all about dealing with all the gunk. It has frequently given me Super Mario Sunshine vibes, which is a hefty comparison. But given the studio's past work on SteamWorld games, it seems like one to at least keep an e?ye on.

The Gunk will hit both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, as well as PC via the Windows Store, on Dec. 16. It's coming to Game Pass on day one too, so if sucking up the gunk seems interesting, there'???s something to do over the holidays.

A few other Thunderful games were confirmed for Xbox today too. Moody monochromatic puzzle platformer White Shadows was locked in for Xbox Series X|S on Dec. 7, the Half-Life inspired Industria will come to the next-gen Xbox in 2022, and the gorgeous-looking Planet of Lana is still set ??as an Xbox console exclusive in 2023.

As for the SteamWorld folks, they had a few announcements aside from The Gunk. They showed off SteamWorld Headhunter, the next game in the SteamWorld universe, and SteamWorld Dig 2 is free-to-keep for a short time on PC.

If you haven't played SteamWorld Dig 2 yet, I implore you to do so if you have any affection whatsoever for metroidvania games, action-platformers, or digging gameplay. The "dig, explore, collect, and resurface to sell" loop is so?? much fun. It's hard to put down.

I consider this to be one of the best metroidvanias out there, and just hearing its name again makes me want to fire it back up for a full playthrough. I liked SteamWorld Dig 1 ??a lot, and y??ou should play that too, but you don't strictly need to finish it first.

The SteamWorld series (including SteamWorld Heist!) rules. I'm rooting for The Gunk, too.

Has anyone else been wondering what's up with The Gunk? We haven't seen much of Image & Form's upcoming 3D game, a major departure from the SteamWorld series, since its reveal a year ago. I'm not trying to r?ush 'em or anything, I'm ??just genuinely curious about this game, and wanted even a small sign of life. As such, I was stoked to see it pop up at Gamescom today with a new trailer and December 2021 release window.

The trailer isn't ??revelat?ory, but it gives us a better idea of the scope.

Game director Ulf Hartelius is calling The Gunk a "story-driven sci-fi exploration game that really focuses on character development," to give you a better idea. You're part of a "space hauling duo" in search of anything and everything that can bring in cash from around the galaxy, and the titular gunk, an "undiscovered substance," could be their big br??eak.

I'm fully on board with the vile-goop-cleaning mechanic as a passionate Super Mario Sunshine defender, and aside from ret??urning a desolate planet back to its former fl?ourishing self, I also like the sound of scanning my surroundings to fill in a logbook.

The new footage is a little?? rough in spots. The Xbox One version is aiming for a "stable 30fps," while the Xbox Series X/S and PC versions will support a "smooth 60fps" up to 4K.

When The Gunk comes to Xbox and PC at the end of the year (including Game Pass!), it'll be an exclusive, and it doesn't seem like that status is going to change.

A little strategy, some platforming, and another card game RPG

In case you missed it, a few years ago Image & Form Games merged with ??Zoink under the banner "Thunderful," an arrangement that continues to this day. In fact, the new conglomeration actually acquired Headup Games, so they're continuing to grow! And a Twitter update today is now reminding us of what's to come.

So the official Image & Form account (which still exists) is teasing out "several new SteamWorld games." That's nice!?? We knew they were coming, but it's good to hear that they're still in the works as of today and moving full (don't say it) steam...ahead. Images for the entire SteamWorld universe were shared in the tease.

But the account also talks a little shop, explaining that Thunderful is indeed the daddy of the situation, directing folks to that handle, while telling fans that Image & Form is stil?l under their purview. Here's the rub: "The Image & Form teams are part of Thunderful since a while back. While we're no longer a separate studio from Thu??nderful, you can count on quality games from the same people (and new faces) for years to come! Thanks for all these amazing years. We can't wait to show what's next!"

That said, the Image & Form account has 22K followers, it wouldn't make much sense to trash it. According to the tweet this morning, they're "dedicating this space to SteamWorld games old and new." Fine by me! It's the thing that interes??ts me the most out of all of Thunderful's offerings by far.

"New SteamWorld games" could include any number of new subfranchises, as well as sequels to Dig 2, Heist, Quest, and even SteamWorld Tower Defense, if they really wanted to get retro.

I'll take...a sequel to every SteamWorld please

The SteamWorld series has been near and dear to my heart since 2013 (sorry SteamWorld Tower Defense), ever since I first played SteamWorld Dig on my 3DS.

Developer Image & Form really had a hit on their hands, which they've expanded upon to great success with SteamWorld Heist, Dig 2, and Quest. Moving into strategy and RPG realms was a big move fo?r the company, but th?ey pulled it off and managed to craft a fun and unique shared universe along the way. Now, after around a year of near-silence regarding the franchise, we could see it expanded even further in the near future.

Speaking to a fan on Twitter, Image & Form explained that they are "making new SteamWorld games" (first of all, yes) and they are?? "not ruling out sequels." Going a tad further, the studio says that they would "love to r??evisit earlier games in the series." Boom. That's like, triple-confirmation!

Obviously our imagination could run wild here, but I think turning SteamWorld Dig into a trilogy is the most obvious move. Next, a whole new game in a completely different genre would be my next bet. Either way, the world is Image & Form's oyster. They seem to have a firm foundation of a fanbase around them and are expanding far beyond the confines of the SteamWorld universe, developing titles like Gunk on PC/Xbox.

It's also coming to PC

It's been a bit since we heard of The Gunk, which was revealed last month, but the game's director, Ulf Hartelius, recently sat down with Pure Xbox to set the record ?straight on the adventure game.

As expected "the core feature is getting rid of the gunk itself." Straight-forward a??nd effective! But in terms of where the game is going to show up, that Microsoft stream really was the best place to put it: because it's not coming to ot?her consoles.

Hartelius clarifies that the game will be a "permanent exclusive for Windows 10 and Xbox consoles," leaving no wiggle room for a PS??4/PS5/Switch port. He also plays up the Xbox daddy, stating "the gunk itself is using an advanced rendering technique that should benefit a lot from the added power of the Series X." "At least 60 frames per second" on Series X is the go??al.

Seems pretty cut and dried? Or gunky? We'll find out when the game?? launches in September 2021. That's over a year away!

I'll play this game once a year nearly every year

SteamWorld Quest enjoyed roughly a month of exclusivity on Switch before it jumped to PC this past May, and since then I've heard tales of quite a few people picking up this ??little gem and enj??oying it.

If you haven't yet now is a good time, as version 2.0 i?s now upon us! Image & Form is using a new developer diary to give us the dirty details, which includes a limited time 20% discount for the Switch and PC editions. 2.0's Big Deal is New Game Plus mode, which allows you to keep nearly all of your equipment and cards on subsequent playthroughs. "Legend Remix," a new "super hard" difficulty is also in, which you can opt to tackle y??our New Game Plus run.

As Image & Form points out, this mode is actually exclusive to NG+ and has "gameplay twists" to boot (um yes, this is instantly getting played).? 2.0 also adds in more concept art in?? art gallery form, a jukebox sound test menu option, HD rumble for Switch, more items at the vendor, lax requirements for the Midas Grand Prix tier in the optional Colosseum, and card balance tweaks.

For an indie game that's a huge update that actually earns the moniker "2.0." I was already planning on revisiting this game basically f??or the rest of my life, and this makes that choice so much easier.

I need more of this world

The SteamWorld series has been going strong for nearly a decade now and it's going to continue on in 2019. Its creators Image & Form have dabbled in tower defense, platforming and tactics-based combat, now they're seemingly going full JRPG for their next interconnected SteamWorld game.

Announced today by way of the Nintendo Indie Highlights presentation it's called SteamWorld Quest (with the subtitle "Hand of Gilgamech"), and it?'s due "first on Switch" sometime this year. Based on the short trailer it looks t??o be a straight role-playing game with JRPG style combat focused around card mechanics.

In the clip we see a band of heroes of various classes battling mech-based takes on classic fantasy creatures, with an aesthetic that really reminds me of Dragon's Crown. We get a brief look at the loot and card system as well,?? showcasing different abilities that seem to be linked to party members/roles. Image & Form clarifies that there are "over 100 unique punch cards" in the game and that combat is turn-based.

Bring on more of this series

Image & Form has a lot to be proud of. They've won a heap of awards for their critically acclaimed SteamWorld series??, and both core platformers have worked their way into annual playthroughs for me.

They'd be crazy to stop this series while they're ahead, and while they don't outright confirm a new entry, something is coming "sooner than [we] think." Delivering a New Year's message, the company notes that they've been fairly inactive publicly since SteamWorld Dig 2 and the SteamWorld Dig Switch port in 2018, but that will change.

A Twitter address explains, "We'v?e been quiet at Image & Form for a really long time now we think, but very soon we have some news for?? you. In the meantime we just wanted to say Happy New Year, and see you sooner than you think."

Whatever it is, it's prob??ably going t??o be Switch-bound!

Roughly a year after the Switch launch

SteamWorld Dig 2 rocks. It's one of those games where you'll pick it up on a rainy morning and play until the rain?? stops. While it feels natural on a portable device like the Switch or Vita it's perfectly playable on a TV, and now you're going to have an extra option to do that this week.

Image & Form has announced that out of the blue, SteamWorld Dig 2 is now availabl??e on Xbox One??. It took over a year to do it but it's here nonetheless, so now you have no excuse if you haven't played it yet given that it's basically on every platform under the sun. This is Game of the Year material folks.

SteamWorld Dig 2 was previously available on Switch, PC, PS4/Vita and 3DS. So basically everything but the Xbox One.

I hope this pair stays on the map

Image & Form and Zoink made waves in the indie community when the??y announced that they were going to be forming a Voltron of a company together -- Thunderful.

For reference the former is the creator of the masterful SteamWorld Dig series, and Zoink crafted the hilarious Stick It to the Man!. They definitely have a l??ot of potential??, and now they've increased their cachet a bit with a new addition.

Thunderful just announced that they've brought on&nbs??p;Ed Valiente as Director of Publishing -- as in, the former Nintendo of Europe business development manager. Valiente specifically has a lot of experience working in the indie scene, making strides to improve the 3DS and Wii U eShop compared to the original DSi and Wii incarnations.

It rema??ins to be seen what Thunderful will cook up next, but I think they're in good hands so far.

Can you dig it?

Nintendolife are reporting that Image & Form's excellent burrowing title, SteamWorld Dig 2, will be a?vailable for download on the Nintendo 3DS eShop next week.

The game stars the pickaxe-weilding Dorothy, a hard-working robot who must venture into the depths of the earth to mine resources and fight swarms of enemies, all while hoping to locate her ?buddy Rusty, who went missing after the events of the original game.

SteamWorld Dig 2 released last year to very hig??h praise from critics and fans, even bagging itself Game of the Year nominations. Though it has already seen release on Switch, the game will be just as well suited to Nintendo's 3D handheld. It will be available to purchase on the eShop February 22, priced at around $20/£20. Image & Form and Zoink

I was just writing about how Image & Form was rapidly making a name for itself, and here we are. As announced this morning by Image & Form CEO Brjann Sigurgeirsson, the company has merged with another leader in the Swedish gaming industry, Zoink, to form the new studio Thunderful. Sigur??geirsson clarifies that Thunderful is owned by Bergsala Holding, Brjann Sigurgeirsson and Klaus Lyngeled.

Zoink is no slouch either, as they developed the universally loved Stick It to the Man!, and are working on the anticipated EA-published Fe. Sigurgeirsson says that the partnership was almost a given, as they "already work together on a daily basis in PR, marketing, intelligence, and publishing," and that this i??s basically a formality. Zoink CEO and now CCO of Thunderful, Klaus Lyngeled, explained that the company is "cl??ose to 50 people" large, and that they'll move into growing internationally.

As long as this gets us more SteamWorld faster, I'm all for it.

Image & Form has had a pretty good run since 2010. Once it pivoted into the SteamWorld universe, which is now comprised of a tower defense game (yep, on DSiWare), two platformers, and a strategy title. It's a grea?t stable ?for sure, especially since they're all connected in one big likable universe.

With the Switch taking off it made sense why Dig 2 and Heist made the cut on the new platform, and now, the original SteamWorld Dig will hit Nintendo's latest too. It's set to arrive on February 1 according to a reveal from Daan ??Koopman's eShop Action Committee podcast, and will be priced at $9.99.

I'm alre??ady in on the PS4 and Vita, and I may triple-dip for this one. Both core games are just so easy to replay on a dime.

Condoning piracy

Image & Form Games have announced on twitter that 2015's SteamWorld Heist is coming to the Nintendo Switch at the en??d of this month, released as an all-inclusive Ultimate Edition.

The critically-acclaimed side-scroller has the player take charge of a band of ?nefarious steambot pirates, who board and capture a succession of spaceship?s, engaging in strategic, turn-based shootouts. Ostensibly this is to loot said ships of their precious booty, but you'll probably find it becomes more about obsessively collecting hats.

Heist is already available on multiple platforms, including PC, PS4, 3DS and Xbox One, and will be coming to Sw?itch in its complete form, featuring all of its previously released DLC, along with optimised touchscreen controls. It's a great-looking game and an addictive challenge, well-worth checking out if you missed it first?? time around.

It pushes you

I've been playing a lot of SteamWorld Dig 2 this past weekend?. I've expired my Switch battery at least once sitting by my wife (who's also playing it on PS4) just taking it in, and now I'm going for a full completion. The thing is, it's not tedious in the slightest.

In the early days of adventure games, you needed to pixel hunt, and in some cases, basically just guess what "100%" completion entailed. Eventually more detailed maps were added, as were percentage counters, and incentives to actually reach that Herculean task (see: Castlevania: Symphony of the Night).

But it's gotten better in the past decade or so. Now there's plenty of tools at your disposal to ensure that you haven't missed anything -- radar-esque items that help you inch up from say 90 to 100%. Now not every game needs that, but the way SteamWorld Dig 2 does it is appreciated.

Tiny checkmarks on the map that help you figure out when a challenge room i?s completed? Yeah, that's useful. Full percentage points on the pause screen for individual maps? Even better. A late-game ??upgrade that also faintly shows gleams where hidden entrances might lie? It's the best.

All the while you're earning more currency, buying new gear and upgrading your abilities constantly. Gear that not only makes you more ferocious in combat, but better at traversing the world. Kevin was spot-on in his assessment of SteamWorld Dig 2. It's a clean, fun Metroidvania that I'll be revisiting yearly a??long with the first.

CAN YOU DIG IT?!

The release date for the Switch port of SteamWorld Dig 2 was already known, but developer Image & Form was unsure about the PC and PS4/Vita versions. We were given a slightly vague "few days later," ?but now the date is out. You can nab the prequel/sequel on PC startin?g September 22 for $19.99/€19.99/£14.99.

If you're a Sony fan, then this is a good day for you, too! The latest entry in the SteamWorld series will be hitting PS4 and PS Vita on September?? 26. I suppose its nearly a week after the Switch port, but at least it is still coming within a decent time frame. It will also be the same price, though I'm unsure if it supports cross-buy. Either way, it won't be long before we're digging again.

Work your way up and down the shaft

The first time I played the original SteamWorld Dig, I completed it all in one sitting. Calling it “addicting” would be an understatement. Image & Form recently showed off a demo of its sequel, SteamWorld Dig 2, du??ring a live stream with Nintendo of Europe, and it looks absolutely fantastic so far.

Dorothy, a character from the first game, is the star this time around. Mechanically, this appears to be very much an extensio??n of what made the original so special. The most immediate, noticeable change is the fluidity and speed of movement. Everything looks great as you sprint and wall jump your way around the environments.

A new feature, not shown in the demo, is the ability to reassign cogs used to upgrade various gear. Some situations will ??call for more armor rather than weapon damage, and it&rsqu??o;ll be up to player discretion how to divvy up their stats in each scenario.

Brjann Sigurgeirsson, CEO of Image & Form, made a point ??of stressing that boss battles will be much more prevalent as well. Towards the end of the video, we get our first real glimpse of what he’s talking about. This boss is supposed to be something of a throwback to the last boss from the or?iginal game and seems to lend a sense of scale as to what we can expect. It's already clear that Dorothy is going to end up a lot more powerful than her predecessor. 

The last juicy tidbit is that SteamWorld Dig 2 actually takes place between the events of the first game and SteamWorld Heist. Image & Form appear to be creating some kind of overarching story across the series. The gameplay ha?s always been the most important aspect, but it’ll be interesting to see how well they can pull this off.
