Those valkyries must be getting pretty tired

One of gaming's most recent success stories is that of open-world crafting adventure Valheim. Despite existing within an undeniably overcrowded market, Iron Gate Studios' viking themed sandbox title has won over a huge conglomerate of fans, all of whom have journeyed to Valheim to carve out a home and habitat for themselves, borne against the?? backdrop of Nordic lore.

The Swedish developer has announced that over five million players have logged into the title since it released on Steam Early Access a mere month ago. This community, enough to fill many a longboat, have reportedly been active in Valheim for a combined 15,000 years, have watched over 35 millio?n hours of in-game footage on Twitch, and hav??e solidified the title as the 39th "Best Reviewed" game in Steam history.

The fact Valheim has been such a success is further validated by the fact Iron Gate Studios consists of only five employees, who eventually found publishing for their passion project via Coffee Stain - renown for its support of all things indie. Like many crafting games, Valheim starts each player out with very little in the way of tools and resources, before tasking them with build??ing a home and sustainable (after)life for themselves within its paradise of slain warriors.

"We watch with pride and excitement, and struggle to find the right words to express our gratitude to you, the community," said Iron Gate of Valheim's immediate success. "Exciting new milestones lie ahead, and we for one cannot wait to show you more of the game as we journey through our 2021 Roadmap... May Frey bless ?you with a plentiful harvest, and may Heimdall watch over your settlem??ent."

"Oh, and if you see an oversized mosquito, run."

How many Vikings does it take to clean up a realm anyways?

When I first started up Valheim and began chopping down trees? and picking up rocks, my immediate rea?ction was, "Ugh, another one of these, huh?"

That attitude quickly changed once I invited a few friends along, b??uilt a simple?? enough base to call home, and began exploring the tenth realm.

Next thing you know, we'd battled our first boss, explored burial chambers and troll caves, and began hunting said trolls for their skin. Th??e hooks were in deep by this point. Time seemingly slipped away from me altogether, and right when I thought I was ready to take a break, another group of friends started their own server and wanted me to tag along. Before I realized it, I'd clocked in over 11 hours into Valheim on my first day.

So, in today's Impulse episode, your local video dudes (Justin Moore and myself) break down and showcase our experiences within Valheim&n??bsp;after spending more than 50 hours with it so far. From the visuals and building mechanics to why we think the progression is so addictive, this episode covers that and so much more.

No matter who you are!

Game Pass is arguably one the best deals in gaming, but saying the same about the Xbox Series X at the moment is pushing it. It's difficult to gloat about the Series X hardware when it really doesn't have muc??h to show for it yet, aside from making last-gen games look and run a lot better.

However, that is also where Xbox Game Pass shines even more on the Series X. Today on Impulse, Justin and myself are breaking down what we think about the ?console so far and showcase the various games we've been playing in 4K HDR! We also take a stab at making some predictions on how this box named X could s?hake things up down the road.

On today's Impulse, Justin and I discuss and share our past and current experiences with this wonderful gem of a game. It's just too much fun for a limited time

I brought my Switch with me to bed last night. No, it wasn't to check on my Animal Crossing villagers I haven't visited in over a month... It was to maliciously wreck 34 other players in Super Mario Bros. 35 by outlasting them and sending as many hammer brothers their way as I possibly could. Now that's what I call a fun time under the sheets!

I managed to rack up two more first-place victories last night in Super Mario Bros. 35, and I can't get enough of it. Nevertheless, regardless of whether I get bored or sidetracked by another video game, Super Mario Bros. 35 has a limited lifespan set in place by Nintendo. Why? I haven't the faintest clue. Perhaps they believe the skill ceiling could become too high? Maybe they plan on fully expanding this idea with a different and more fleshed out release (levels from World and 3 would be glorious). May??be it's just Nintendo ??being Nintendo.

Regardless, Super Mario Bros. 35 is only "playable" until March 31, 2021. So, today on Impulse, Justin and myself share our first impressions of the game so far! So, sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of glorious Mario background music and gameplay as we share the experiences we've had playing Super Mario Bros. 35 during its launch!

Not quite fully assembled

From the moment Marvel's Avengers was first showcased at E3 (in what feels like forever ago), a lot of people had their doubts about the game based on what we saw at the time. Well, now that it's finally here, it's a clear-cut example ?of a game that should have been left to cook for a lot longer.

Whether it was Marvel and S?quare Enix attempting to get it out of? the oven before the new consoles arrived or just too much feature creep (or both), it's all conjecture for now.

However, the road ahead for Marvel's Avengers has plenty of content in store. Crystal Dynamics claims it plans on supporting the game for years to come, and data miners have discovered a list of new characters coming in ??the future. But, before they start dropping content, ther??e are plenty of ongoing issues in the base game as it is, and that's what we're going over today on Impulse!

So, sit back and enjoy the sights and sounds of Justin and myself (now in 4K!) sharing our experiences and issues we've encountered this past week while playing Marvel's Avengers.

Eight-legged bullies

We built walls from blades of grass. The spiders tore them down. We constructed weapons and went to battle. T??he spiders defeated us with little effort. We fled to a new home. The spiders just followed us.

Honestly, the spiders in Grounded are straight-up assholes and as someone who already hates spiders to begin with, Obsidian Entertainment isn't changing that opinion a??nytime soon.

Justin and I spent the weekend sight-seeing and exploring the backyard of Grounded in online co-op for this Early Access impressions video. We saw everything from beautiful giant blueberry bushes and peaceful ladybugs, to even a gigantic Battletoads figure! There's plenty to see in Grounded, but you have to be v??igilan??t while exploring because spiders are always down to ruin pretty much everything.

Eight-legged problems aside, I think Grounded has the potential to become my favorite survival game once they've added more to do around the backyard. But at the moment, the Early Access version is pretty bare-bones (much like our teenage protagonists' corpses after the spiders were done ??with us).

Sit back and enjoy the?? sights and sounds of Justin and myself sharing our first impress??ions so far!

Valorant won't be good until 1.6

Counter-Strike is a series I've sunk a stupid amount of my life into, and since I stopped playing CS:GO roughly three to four years ago, nothing has taken its place as my immediate go-to time-waster between games. I played Overwatch at launch and fell off after a few weeks, and that's pretty much been the same story for every big FPS game this generation. Admittedly, it's because I'm regularly playing new games or ticking off games fr??om my backlog, making it feel li??ke I can no longer justify the time to become competitive again and genuinely stick with something.

However, the folks over at Riot Games have seemingly mastered what I like to call "maximum money optimization." Think of it as search engine optimization (SEO) – but instead of trying to nail specific key terms for better Google listings, Riot attempts to improve upon specific game formulas and existing mechanics to make insane amounts of money. Valorant is completely unoriginal ?(and a bit lacking at the moment), but it has potential that I'm sure Riot will continue t??o capitalize on.

Valorant is undoubtedly scratching an itch for me that I haven't felt in years. How long it will last, though, I'm not sure. For now, take a seat, and enjoy the sights and sounds of Justin and myself flexing our CS:GO muscle memory for ten minutes while sharing our impressions of Valorant so far!

No Man's Sky is a game that I hold in high regard now lately for a lot of reasons. However, back when I originally reviewed the game for a channel me and my friends started I absolutely tore into it for all the numerous and very obvious issues. You gotta run, and don't look back

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a fantastic single-player video game and one of my personal favorites games from this generation. Red Dead Online, however, is maybe Rockstar's worst online component to date and I genuinely believe if it launched alongside the single-player -- that Metacritic score would be looking very different. Red Dead Online doubles down on the things that people genuinely didn't like about Grand Theft Auto Online (grinding, in-game currencies, etc). All while offering up very little in the way of compelling content and being do??wnright broken in many area?s.

The PVP is a hard lock free-for-all shitfest most of the time, horse racing boils down to whoever survives the first horse pile-up, and the grind to for money is absolutely insane. Most folks just abuse exploits to gain money and gold, leaving them with nothing of interest to work towards or do. So, despite now being out of beta and claims from Take-Two that Red Dead Online is “performing better” than GTA Online around the same period, I can't say I agree.

From what I've seen, the player base has fallen off a cliff. At one point you could walk into the larger cities and towns (such as Saint Denis and Blackwater) and find numerous folks who would gladly shoot you on sight. Now and days, I'll maybe see the odd person or two wandering around selling things. Even certain PVP modes are all but completely dead at certain times of the day and I can't honestly blame folks for abandoning Red Dead Online. It only takes a session or two to see everyt?hing worthwhile and you're left with very little to work towards and the dri?p-feed of content isn't bringing folks back.

Believe it or not, this is only a sample of my complaints from Red Dead Online. So, it's time to relax, pou??r a glass of your favorite alcoholic beverage (unless you're CM Punk??), sit down in your favorite chair, and enjoy the sights and sounds of a person who spent well over a hundred hours in this mess ranting about it on the internet!

So, it's time to relax, pour a glass of your favorite alcoholic beverage (unless you're CM Punk), sit down in your favorite chair, and enjoy the sights and sounds of video games be?ing discussed on the internet.

The boiled and punished crabs will have their revenge

Today on Impulse, Dan and Sam from over at Infinite Backlog sit down and discuss the current state of Sea of Thieves and whether or not it's still worth playing in 2019! From the early days and drama aro?und the lack of content to going in-depth with what's been added sinc??e launch.

From tales of encounters with krakens and sharks, fighting off the terrifying skeletal creatures (that some say live inside each and every one of us), and how things got heated when we encountered a volcanic island! I think if you have the right mindset and a few friends hungry for an adventure on the high seas -- you'll be in for a good time with Sea of Thieves.

A not so disco inferno

In today's episode of Impulse, I'm joined by my good friend Justin Moore to discuss our brief time spent in Battlefield's first crack at the battle royale genre known as Firestorm! After putting in a?? solid couple of hours this past week, we've co??me back from it feeling more disinterested than burned.

Firestorm certainty isn't bad, hell, it's a solid mode and great addition to Battlefield V -- I just don't think it'l??l be as hot as the name suggests. This mostly bo?ils down to the fact Firestorm doesn't do much different from other games within the genre and it also handles other things far more poorly (such as matchmaking and the terrible looting system).

It's certainly a looker, though, as it's easily the best looking game within battle royale thanks to the Frostbite Engine. Combine this with vehicles, destructible environments, and objectives -- it does play to Battlefield's strengths.

Ultimately, it's still nice to have a game that takes a more grounded approach to the genre outside of PUBG and Call of Duty's Blackout. But, I can't help but feel like this mode would have been much more appreciated at launch and that Apex Legends? easily stole th??????????????????????????e show this year when it comes to battle royale games.

The chosen one? More like the over powered one!

Sure, Electronic Arts have won “Worst Company in America” in previous years (twice in a row, in fact), but I can't think of a worse year than 2017 for EA. Mass Effect: Andromeda was downright embarrassing on launch and straig?ht-up shelved the ent??ire franchise for the time being.

The faces of gamers everywhere grew tired as EA proclaimed single-player games weren't pro??fitable enough for their own stup??idly high expectations. Ultimately, this half-baked theory of theirs directly fed into the closure of Visceral Games and cancellation of their single-player Star Wars game.

It's not hard to see why, though, when executives over there are throwing around alleged quotes like “FIFA Ultimate Team makes a billion dollars a year.’ Where’s your version of that?” If that wasn't bad enough, following that came the shit storm to end all shit storms in the form of the Star Wars: Battlefront 2 lootbox controversy that broke mainstream news all over the world.

Ever since then, whenever I'm talking about games with friends or family -- if the topic of EA pops up -- I've noticed almost all of them have an absolute disdain for EA lately. Apex Legends seems to be the exception to that rule as of late, but it just seems like the core gaming community has no tolerance left for EA and ?I can't blame them.

Well over a year later, though, DICE have been committed to making Battlefront 2 a good game with numerous updates and fixes. So, in this episode of Impulse, Justin and I discuss the current state of Battlefront 2 and whether or not it's worth revisiting! From the release controversy,? the campaign mode, the current multiplayer, and the new Clone Wars content -- we shoot the shit about it?!

Greed is a demon, apparently

Over the weekend we ventured into the D.C. ruins within The Division 2! We shot things (mostly people), climbed over trash, and came to the conclusion that the Joker himself was responsible for ?all of this. As for the ga??me itself, out of all the looter shooters I've played so far, I think this one has me the most invested.

I've never played the original, but the Division's Dark Zone risk/reward concept of exploring in search of better loot at the risk of potentially running into hostile players is a solid idea. Combine this with an open world structured PVE experience that has you searching high and low for better ge?ar and completing various missions -- I can see?? how some folks can get hooked.

After watching plenty of previews and reviews from the original, though, it's not hard at all to see the glaring similarities in The Division 2. From the UI and HUD to the near identical gameplay loop, at first glance, The Division 2 just feels like they've introd??uced a ?new setting and not much else.

I'm hoping I'm proven? wrong with the full release and future content plans, but I??'m curious to hear from folks who played the original if they had straight up déjà vu vibes from the open beta. Also, shouts out to Justin for co-hosting this episode with me!

Mario and Smash and Zelda, oh my!

Nintendo's Direct presentations either go one of two ways: they are chock full of surprises no one saw coming or kind of meander along until they reach the finish line. Thankfully, this week's Direct was full of a lot of good?? info and it led to some g??reat banter between myself and Dan. We figured talking about our highlights and dislikes from the February presentation would make for some great discussion below.

Personally, I'm beyond stoked for that Link's Awakening remake. I know rumors had been passed around for years, but I didn't think Nintendo would be crazy enough to do it. The last few remakes have all been of 3D entries and I would have put money on Skyward Sword getting an HD release ahead of any of the Gameboy installments. With this absolute classic of a game getting the modern treatment, hopefully, this means Minish Cap won't be far behind.

Since this is a longer discussion (almost a full half hour!), I could understand not wanting to sit in front of your computer and listen to me and Dan prattle on about video games. Thankfully, Impulse is available on SoundCloud for your portable listening pleasure! You can even play this in the background while checking out those demos for Yoshi's Crafted World and Daemon X Machina. That sounds like a goo??d companion to?? this episode.

Respawn isn't done yet

From out of nowhere, Repsawn Entertainment released Apex Legends. Set in the Titanfall universe, this new take on battle royale has been doing exceptionally well for EA. After hitting a staggering 10 million players in just a few days, it starts to become silly when you think that Titanfall 2 almost sunk the company. Is this all just the hype train working its magic, or is Apex honestly good?

Well, Dan and I sat down to discuss our thoughts on the game and we've both walked away fairly impressed. You can read this review-in-progress to go really in-depth, but suffice to say, EA and Respawn might have a legitimate shot at stealing PUBG and Fortnite's thunder. Call of Duty, eat your heart out.

If you a?ren't keen to watch Dan's feeble attempts at winning a round, why not check out Impulse on?? SoundCloud? It's all the same great discussion with less of the visual distractions. It's also perfect for your morning commute to work.

SERVER ERROR

This past weekend marked the first public demo for EA and BioWare's upcoming Anthem. Being set up to directly tackle Bungie and Destiny, a lot of people were expecting big things from this game. I wasn't sure exactly where I stood, but I thought the demo would give ??me?? some insight. Turns out Dan and I both found that insight, just probably not in the way EA was hoping for.

I understand this is a demo and things could always change, but Anthem didn't play very well. There's nothing wrong, mechanically speaking, but those server issues are staggering. I should clarify that nothing is wrong on consoles because Dan had a h??ell of a time with the PC version. You can see just a bit of his headaches in the video below.

If you don't want to sit and watch Dan clipping through environments or getting blasted by invisible enemies, why not check out Impulse on SoundCloud? With our handy audio version, you ca?n hear all of the debate without dealing with vi?sual hiccups and hilarious mishaps. The sight of Dan getting aced by no one is pretty great, though.

Whoever loses, we win!

Ever since launching its own storefront, Epic Games has been making a big push to corner some of the digital markets on PC. Clearly aiming some of Valve's pie, this push has seen Epic not only acquire some pretty big exclusive launches but poach others right from Valve. There's a lot to be said on the subject, so Dan and I sat down to discuss our thoug??hts on Epic's move into Steam's backyard.

Ultimately, consumers w??ill come out on top. Whether or not Valve actually learns anything, this is likely to get different publishers thinking about how they can clean up their own digital storefronts and provide more user accessibility. Steam didn't get to the place it is over??night, so hopefully, we'll see that same kind of growth happen for Epic.

If you aren't a fan of videos and don't like staring at Dan's Half-Life 2 footage, why not check out our SoundCloud page? You'll get the same great discussion minus the Gordon Freeman camera. You can even lull ??yourself to sleep with our comatose voices. We're a great sleep aid.

Light Vs Dark...or Anime Vs Disney

Kingdom Hearts III is almost here and I don't know? if I can breathe! While I'm not exactly a die-hard fan of the series, I got into the original two in my youth an??d have been eagerly awaiting the third entry for almost half of my life. That's quite a long time to be anticipating a sequel, but the wait is nearly done.

To help tide myself over until III is in my hands, I dragged Dan along to reminisce about our memories of the series. Going back to 2002 and when the world thought this was an elaborate joke to how absolutely convoluted and drawn out the series is now, we hit all the bases on today's Impulse. You could say it's a perfect mirror of the "complex" narrative that Squa??re Enix has created.

LEON!

Since both Dan and I listed Resident Evil 2 as one of our most anticipated games for 2019, we obviously had to the play the new "One-Shot" demo over the weekend. After a grueling 30 minutes spent running through the renovated ruins of Raccoon City PD, the two of us sat down and discussed wh??at we loved about Capcom's re-imagining of this horror classic. Needless to say, we were impressed.

I'm particularly in awe of the gore effects, which look positively gruesome.? Shooting off specific limbs and even fingers has never been so grotesquely rendered before. Leon's also got a lot of charm for being the baby faced hero he once was. I can't wait to revisit the blossoming sort of romance be??tween him and Ada Wong.

I'm heading back to the mansion not once, but twice!

In today's episode, I sat down with Associate Editor Peter Glagow??ski once again to discuss the games from years past that we'll still be playing in 2019! Personally, I have a massive backlog of o?lder games that I'll probably never complete. In previous years I'd normally focus on that backlog over newer games.

Lately, though, I'm playing new games on a constant basis, ei?ther to find topics to discuss, or just for video reviews. It's rare for me nowadays to even consider delving into past games. However, I do make an exception for sequels and re?makes by trying, at least, to play the previous or older iteration.

So, with the upcoming release of Resident Evil 2, I've found myself returning to the mansion once again to fend off zombies, giant spiders, and snakes alike -- including tank controls! I've forgotten just how genuinely difficult the original Resident Evil is on the original/normal difficulty.

But, what games will you folks be still playing this year? Are there any new series you plan on jumping into? I'm planning on playing through the God of War series for the fi??rst time! I'm looking forward to seeing Kratos go from being an angry asshole to a slightly ?less angry father. It's the natural course of things, generally.

Two of the most requested games of all time are real and will be in our hands in less th??an three weeks! That is insane! What about the rest of the year, though?

The monkey's paw strikes again!

After our glowing review of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate from Chris Carter -- which primarily focused on the single-player components -- I decided in today's episode of Impul??se we'd discuss our impressions from the online multiplayer! So, I sat down once again with Associate Editor Peter Glagowski to discuss our time spent wrapping our heads around it.

And boy oh boy, maybe they should have taken a note from Ro?ckstar and slapped the word “beta” on this thing -- because it's arguab?ly the worst online multiplayer the series has had on offer to date. From the questionably bad UI to an online matchmaking system that straight up spoils the competitive scene.

It's the most on-brand Nintendo online experience and has me questioning why anybody should be p??aying for their online s??ervice in the first place.
