We all know cats have nine lives, but Umbraclaw is on the way to prove they also get successively cooler powers each time they die. The latest side-scrolling action game from Inti Creates (Azure Striker Gunvolt, Blaster Master Zero) is set to launch on consoles and PC on May 30, 2024.

Specifically, Umbraclaw is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, a??nd PC. A demo is on the way to the February 2024 edition of Steam Next Fest, and you can see how much ass this little cat kicks in the release date trailer below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-ri1gNZN0c

Umbraclaw follows a house cat named Kuon, who awakens in the Soulplane after dying in our world. In order to return home, she'll have to brave this rea??????????????????????????lm of the dead, which has a really cool art style to ??it. While cats do have nine lives, those lives come and go rather easily. Whenever Kuon takes a hit she dies; simple as that. Thankfully, she has an "Anima Revive" power that can bring her back to life with a new skill each time, paving the way for different play styles and leading her toward multiple possible endings.

Some of those skills are animal transformation skills like the Crow, Tyrannosaurus, and Elephant (take that, Mario). Kuon can also change into a humanoid form for "full fighting action," switching the focus from enemy avoidance to direct combat. Blaster Master Zero director Satoru Nishizawa is at the helm for this one, and hopefully, it's as fun to play as it is to watch. We'll see how the sampler pans out next month ahead of the May launch. We'll also find out more about the other mystery game Inti Creates is working on During PAX East 2024!

Gal Panic

Inti Creates has announced that it will be retitling its recently released platformer Grim Guardians: Demon Purge as Gal Guardians: Demon Purge in all English-speaking count??r??ies. The action-packed Gothic adventure will be briefly removed from storefronts while the name change takes place.

The need to pull the ol' switcheroo comes in response to a legal claim from the owners of fantasy franchise Grimguard a series that utilizes the similar sounding name for its range of tabletop and mobile titles. It's no doubt a frustrating situation for Inti Creates, but given the Demon Purge is part of the Gal Gun series, the name change is still a snug fit.

Released last month on PC and consoles, Grim... Sorry, Gal Guardians: Demon Purge is a metroidvania-like title that weighs in a little heavier on the arcade action over the RPG elements. As noted in our review, it offers dynamic and engaging co-op action, punctuated with good humor, and dressed up in ??lovely pixel art and a cool, Castlevania-lite soundtrack. For fans of the classic Konami series, as well as SNES aficionados everywhere, it's definitely worth checking out.

Gal Guardians: Demon Purge is available now on PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. A physica?l edition is also in the works, though no doubt it will now be delayed while the artwork is changed to reflect?? the new title.

Exorcise Class

For the students of Sakurazaki Academy, it looks like school's out outta luck, outta time, outta this dimension. The discovery of a dusty old mirror by mischievous demon girl Kurona has led to the popular place of learning somehow fusing with the dark arts, resulting in both the interior and the exterior of the building forming a cavernous, gothic castle, whil?e replacing textbooks, playgrounds, and chalkboards with iron maidens, candlelit chandeliers, and a mass menagerie of demons, ghouls, and specters.

That Kurona... what a dickhead.

And while one would imagine that, for any young student, these events would be a positive boon, rivaling even the longest of snow days, it seems that most of Sakurazaki's students and faculty have found themselves trapped within this nightmarish world, lost deep in its centuries-old design and perpetually hounded by unholy creatures. However, all is not lost. The brave and noble Kamizono sisters were yet to arrive for class when the stran??ge phenomenon first occurred. And, fortunately for our damsels in distress, Shinobu and her younger sibling Maya also happen to be part-time professional demon hunters duly honed in the fine art of kicking serious monster ass.

And thus, armed with an array of ancient magical arts, some surprisingly violent origami skills, and more than a round or two of good, old-fashioned lead, the Kamizonos don their finest demon-hunting armor (i.e. Goth Lolita outfits) and set out to teach Kurona and her newfound army of minions a lesson they won't soon forget. One thing's for sure, it's going to be a hell of a semester for our girls.

grim guardians: demon purge review

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge (PlayStation [PS5 reviewed], PC, Nintendo Switch)
Developer: Inti Creates Co. Ltd.
Publisher: Inti Creates Co. Ltd.
Released: February 23, 2023
MSRP: $24.99

Developed by anime-lovin' studio Inti Creates, Grim Guardians: Demon Purge is a spin-off title to the cheesecake series Gal*Gun, specifically Gal*Gun: Double Peace (note the initials). There is an irony here in that the Gal*Gun franchise was originally intended to fit within a 2D adventure genre, before the executive decision was made to make it a super-sexualized rail shooter instead. As such, Grim Guardians arguably sees the franchise experiment with?? what could have been, should the initial design plan have been followed.

And, in something of a d?ouble irony, ??it just might be the best game in the series.

At first glance, Grim Guardians looks to be a dyed-in-the-wool metroidvania, with a design that openly and happily apes the aesthetic of Konami's much-loved vampire hunting franchise. But while there are certainly elements of backtracking and exploration at play here, Grim Guardians is an arcade platformer first and foremost. It chooses to focus on forward momentum, level negotiation, and bullet-pumping action, rather than attempting to mimic the RPG elements of its inspiration. Grim Guardians is, in many ways, quite comparable to Castlevania /em> in debt, even /em> but is more content to focus on '90s style p??latforming action, than single map exploration. Much to its own benefit.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7uWrjl95k4&ab_channel=INTI?CREATES

Gals 'n' Guns

One or two players step into the frilly skirts of The Kazimono Sisters, Shinobu and Maya. While younger sister Maya uses mythic origami arts creating weapons and familiars out of paper with which to slay ??the enemy, Shinobu favors real-world weaponry such as machine guns, grenades, and rocket launches. This makes the elder sister better for ranged, long-distance combat, while Maya offers up powerful melee attacks, while also holding the key to traversal, thanks to her ?skill at making platforms, stairwells, or, *checks notes* umbrellas.

Both characters synergize as they make their way through the castle's stages, combining their offensive and defensive abilities as best serve the given situation. In single-player, the characters are played simultaneously, tagging in-and-out as the moment requires. Additionally, if one of the girls falls in battle, then her sister can get her back in the action with a handy dose of button-mashing CPR. It's no River City Girls' "Kick their souls back into them", but? ?it gets the job done.

And so, the Kazimono sisters race through several distinct areas of the ghastly castles, battling a multitude of monsters, as well as end-of-stage bosses, while pressing ever closer to the ultimate showdown with Kurona in the castle's tower. As they press through the dingy realm, our heroes are also tasked with rescuing their schoolyard chums, all of whom will be very familiar to Double Peace fans, and some of whom reward Shinobu ??and Maya with new weapons, skills, and abilities. It is with these additional items that exploration elements come into play, with the girls able to revisit previous stages and uncover various secrets??, bonus items, and the most sequestered of their lost friends.

Monster High

If this all sounds simplistic, then it's by design. Grim Guardians, at least initially, has no aspirations of being anything less than a simple platform actioner. In fact, for the first few hours, it almost seems a little too simplistic. An enjoyable game in its own right, but a little humdrum. In addition, the challenge also leans way too far on the side of easy, (I implore you to play on "Veteran" mode, and even then you shouldn't have too much of a struggle.)

Intriguingly, however, Grim Guardians does actually evolve as you play it, offering up a little more adventure, exploration, and mystery than what appears to have been initially on offer. To say more would give a little too much away, but while Grim Guardians seems a little bland on its first viewing, the game does expand somewhat, with some fun surprises and gameplay t?weaks rearing their head as our sisters venture deeper into its splatteriffic kingdom.

Importantly, Grim Guardians is simply a joy to play. Uncomplicated? Absolutely, but it offers fun and dynamic action especially in co-op while wooing players with some wonderful pixel visuals, very cooly-designed monsters, and a variety of different locations and scenarios. While the storyline itself is thin, the dopey dialogue is great often laugh-out-loud funny and is accompanied by attractive character portraits and top-quality splash art. Speaking of splashes, Demon Purge is also su??rprisingly gory, at least in pixelated fashion, with buckets of the red stuff as well as a penchant for head-splitting and body scissoring.

'Not a Scooby Clue...'

Grim Guardians wears its love for the games that inspired it on its sleeve, with many a familiar "stand-in" for that series ghouls, stages, mechanics, locales, and effects. (Yes, Virginia, there are Medusa Head variants). A cool score replicates the famously smooth basslines and frantic piano bashing of Super Castlevania IV, while stages set in underground waterways, labyrinthine libraries, and moonlit clock towers come off as a tribute to, not a rip-off of, t??he Belmont family adventures. Hell, even a floating orb closes out each sta?ge, only it has its own fanservice twist. Naturally.

Grim Guardians loves Castlevania, and that certainly counts for something, at least where its own design is concerned. It might not have close to the epic scale, dramatic weight, or prestige class of a Symphony of the Night, but, importantly, Demon Purge does not attempt t??o overreach, instead choosing to focus on its own, more attainable goa?ls.

Outside of its main campaign, Grim Guardians: Demon Purge does not have many extras to offer. Completing the game on Veteran unlocks a "Legendary" difficulty setting which, frankly, should have been available from the get-go. Grim Guardians retails at a relatively easy price point, and while I initially thought it still might be a pinch too high, I changed my mind as more of the game's secrets unfurled. Players can choose from English and Japanese voice tracks, (although the cutscenes are only available in Japanese). Both tracks feature fun, quality voice acting, imbuing life and personality into the game's cast of comical heroes and villains. I really want to join the curry club.

Class is in Session

Grim Guardians isn't Castlevania, or Bloodstained, or even Gal*Gun, ironically. But it is easily recommendable for fans of all of the above... Perhaps just fans of video games. Capturing the aesthetic of a 16-bit horror platformer and marrying it with a questionable rail shooter franchise seems like a bad fit, and, indeed, Grim Guardians is not without its fair? share of flaws. For the most part, however,?? this spin-off experiment has been a success, offering up a fine tribute to old-school platformers while still stamping a sense of its own identity onto the proceedings.

It's fast, cute, and funny. It has great co-op action, nostalgic visuals, solid sound design, and is ready to rock at a fairly modest price. It's just, as the idiom goes, good, old-fashioned fun. And in a world of billion-dollar budgets, HBO adaptations, legal acquisitions, and endless social media discourse, maybe gami?ng could use a little 16-bit exor??cism right about now.

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge is a hearty tribute not only to early '90s platformers, but to video gaming itself, offering up stress-free thrills, comedic characters, cool co-op action, and even a fistful of secrets and surprises, all visually and aurally punctuated with delightful, nostalgic style. While not as deep, as complex, nor as prestige as its inspirations, Grim Guardians achie??ves its humble goals handily, offering up a cheerful dose of retro action while sporting ??a likable personality all of its own.

Girls with Guns

Inti Creates has announced that its incoming release Grim Guardians: Demon Purge is just about ready to unleash its flurry of pixelated horror on the world. The Gothic anime actioner will launch on PC and console platforms on ?February 23, 2023.

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge sees two young sisters venture into a foreboding castle on a quest to purge their school from its demonic presence. One or two players control older sister Shinobu, who is locked and loaded w?ith a crazy arsenal of long-range weaponry, and her younger sibling Maya, who has mastered the deadly art o??f... erm... origami. Combining the destructive capabilities of the former with the precision and adaptation of the latter, our two heroes will head deeper into the grim locale, battling a gallery of monsters, ghoulies, and terrifying and unholy boss characters.

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge looks to combine the run-and-gun action of the 1990s with the classic Gothic overtones of the Castlevania series, dressed up in a pleasing anime cheese aesthetic. An array of secrets, weapons, and spells await, while a "Style" based scoring system will reward those who utilize a sense of fluidity in their relentless monster-mashing. Sporting delightful pixel-based visuals and classic arcade sound, Grim Guardians simpl??y looks like good, unabashed fun, particularly in co-op, and has quickly found its way onto my radar for the first quarter of the coming year.

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge launches February 23, 2023 on? PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

There will be five 'big content updates' in all

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 DLC is confirmed and Inti Creates is announcing it in a pretty big way today.

Here are the two main things coming on August 25. From there, Inti Creates promises "five big content updates," which will come "once a month over the next four months." Additional content teas??es include new boss fights, more modes, and "more story content," including "Epilogue ATEMS." The planned end date at this time for free update support is December 2022.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 DLC 3

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 DLC #1 - A playable Kirin XX character

Kirin XX is a souped-up version of the main character from Azure Striker Gunvolt 3.

She can't utilize passive image pulses, but she does have a greater "variety of abilities." To unlock her you'll need to clear the game and witness the true ending. An "XX Trigger" option will let you swap to her before sta??rting a mission.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 DLC 2

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 DLC # 2 - D-nizer Mode

This mode, quite simply, lets you p??lay as Gunvol?t the entire time.

Here's the rundown from Inti Creates: "D-nizer Mode tasks you with playing as a special version of GV to see how far you can make ?it in a highly challenging survival mode. In this mode, GV plays similarly to playing the main story with the Passive Image Pulse 'Primal Dragon' GUNVOLT equipped. It's strongly recommended that you practice by using this Image Pulse in each stage before tackling D-nizer Mode."

The full roadmap

  • August 25, 2022 â€?New playable character “Kirin XX,â€?new mode “D-nizer Mode,â€?and more
  • Late September 2022 â€?New boss, new mode “Trial Mode,â€?and more
  • Late October 2022 â€?New boss and more
  • Late November 2022 â€?New boss and more
  • December 2022 â€?Additional story “Epilogue ATEMS,â€?online scoreboard, and more

Oh and there's one more thing! Inti Creates is bringing back the "grab the DLC quick to get it for free" program: "In addition to updating the game with new free content, a new DLC pack will release around the sam??e time with a two-week free download ca?mpaign! Download in the first two weeks to keep the DLC free."

Announced at BitSummit

Inti Creates is at it again, continuing to corner the 2D market with the new action platformer Grim Guardians: Demon Purge. The game is ac?tually being shown this weekend at BitSummit in Kyoto, Japan, on August 6 and 7.

Grim Guardians will feature two playable characters (who are sisters) in the form of demon hunters trying to rescue their school from peril: Shinobu Kamizono (ranged attacker) and Maya Kamizono (melee). Inti Creates says "swapping characters is key to gameplay," and in addition to solo play, there's also a two-player co-op mode. As our own CJ Andriessen points out, those two names are from Gal Gun: Double Peace.

Amazingly, Inti Creates is calling this "the beginning of a brand new series of 2D action games," hence the obvious subtitle. Whereas Azure Striker Gunvolt is their own take on the Mega Man franchise, so too will Grim Guardians mirror aspects of Castlevania (like their Bloodstained tie-in projects). Hey, if Konami isn't going to do it, so?meone e??lse should!

Grim Guardians: Demon Purge release date and platform info

As for a release date and platforms, the former is listed as "TBD," but the latter includes PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The official website will?? likely b??e the first place we'll get that info.

Just as I said in my recent Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 review, I'm game for basically anything Inti Creates that even looks remotely like Grim Guardians. This is an easy sell.

Lightning strikes thrice

I say this so often, but it's hard to imagine a gaming landscape without Inti Creates preserving old school experiences for new audiences. Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 keeps that train rolling.

Review: Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 1

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (PC, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch)

At this point, we're flush with Gunvolt games. H??ere's a recap since t??he series kicked off in 2014:

And yet, I'm not sick of it all. Still!

While the story still plunges into the depths of insanity at times in Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, we're once again grounded by the addition of a new playable character: Kirin. Smartly, Kirin is the focus this time, as she's the core playable character, with Gunvolt serving as a swappable "bonus" of sorts. Playing as Kirin gives the game a completely different feel, since you can pretty much p??lay the entire game with just her.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVuRvCQr0kY

Her hook is throwing talismans (kind of like how Gambit throws cards in X-Men), which latch onto enemies similar to Gunvolt's lock-on feature. Except this time, those talismans are "softening enemies up" for sword slashes, giving Kirin a "Zero to Gunvolt's Mega Man X" gameplay juxtaposition. The entire "battle priestess" angle works through and through, an??d her attacks have a lot of flair to them that make her feel different not just compared to Gunvolt, but prior characters in the series.

It's also really intuitive. You gauge how much damage you're going to do to enemies by marking them for death, and a little indicator comes up on their health bar showcasing the damage you'll deal if you hit them while talismans are attached. You can load up enemies while you're dodging around and then close the gap and slash away. It's a nimble and fun mechanic in practice. Then you add in a dash slash for locomotion (namely triggered? by chucking talismans at either enemies or specific objects that can be t??argeted, like lamp posts), on top of more abilities for Kirin to continue a combo without touching the ground, and you got a stew going.

As previously mentioned you can swap to Gunvolt, who is more like a timed cheat code. He has infinite jumps (thus allowing you to clear large platforming sequences that Kirin has to work to get through) and extremely powerful attacks, mimicking his older style of firing a targeting gun at enemies, so that he can unleash homi?ng lightning attacks that do all of the real damage.

With this system, the idea is that Gunvolt spends time in a wolf?? form (which is part of the story, gleaned early on), following Kirin around, but with the aid of a separate power meter (which can typically go from 0% to 300%), you can trigger a transformation and control Gunvolt directly as long as you have 100% meter or above. From that point on the clock is ticking, and d??ropping to 0% (or manually swapping back) will bring Kirin back into the fold.

It's clever because you only have to use Gunvolt as much as you want to. If desired, you could basically just play as Kirin the entire time. But if you need a little pick me up (because Kirin is low on health, struggling with a boss, or you keep falling down pits), Gunvolt is a quick button press away. Making Kirin the focus is ideal, because fans who may want an air of familiarity can still get it, but Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 forges its own path with a new hero. I wouldn't mind seeing Inti Creat?es repeat this formula going forward.

Much like other Gunvolt entries, a score attack element is very much front and center. Kirin not touching the ground, or not swapping to Gunvolt it all makes for better clear scores, and I can't wait to see what the community has in store with Kirin, Gunvolt, and Kirin/Gunvolt speedrun categories. From there, it's a traditional Gunvolt game with an intro level, four bosses that can be done in any order, a mid-point stage, more selectable bosses, then a finale. You'll acquire new abilities for Kirin along the way (mostly in the form of blade abilities and passives that adjust your stats or abilities), as well as power-ups of sorts that can call in friendlies like a Marvel vs. Capcom assist.

Review: Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 4

As is the case with several other Inti Creates projects, you won't be too confused jumping right into the threequel, as things are explained via quick bits of expository dialogue in cutscenes. In other words, you won't be lost, but there are direct narrative continuations and references to past games that prior fans will enjoy (not to mention that the series as a whole,?? especially if we're just talking about the two prior main entries, isn't that big of a time sink). A full (serviceable) English dub will make that all the more palatable to first-time audiences.

Not everything lands story-wise, but it does have this very tight cast-driven feel, as part of the narrative relies on converting people on the enemy sid??e to your cause. Silly dialogue (including one boss and later companion that's obsessed with muscles) propels some of the less fun fights forward, though it can obfuscate a few boss encounters with all the HUD elements turned on. Sometimes th?e entire screen is full of insane text/effects to the point of parody, but those effects do help set this series apart especially the spoken word special moves that almost all have proper names.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 is very reminiscent of past games as a baseline, but I'm more than okay with that because it does deviate where it counts (and hardcore fans will find a lot of other nuances too). Inti Creates can keep making tight action platformers for an indefinite amount of time as far as I'm concerned. I'll keep parroting this until the cows come home, but give them Mighty No. 9. Keep giving them spinoff projects like Curse of the Moon. This studio has a chokehold on the genre.

Console editions coming next week

This coming fortnight sees the arrival of explosive action sequel Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, which will be bringing its hi-tech carnage to Xbox and Nintendo Switch. But if you're a PC owner wanting in on the fast-paced, retro-styled action, then fear not, as Inti Creates has announced that the cool-looking re?lease will be getting a Steam port this winter.

As we have previously reported, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 is the long??-awaited third chapter in a saga that began on Nintendo 3DS way back in 2014. This new chapter will see dual heroes Gunvolt and Kirin hack, slash, and shoot their way through flashy 2.5D platform action. Switching between the two characters on the fly, players will be encouraged to synergize each character's respective skills to fight off an army of dangerous droids and towering end-of-stage guardians.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=3icCimtZdLI

Adding to this anime-infused chaos, an intriguing new mechanic known as "Image Pulse" will enable Gunvolt to utilize his memories of battle to call upon the sk??ills of his former opponents, arming himself with the skills of over 150 allies and enemies from the entire trilogy. Additionally, Gunvolt and Kirin will be g??uided by the evocative, dulcet tones of their virtual oracle, Anthem, whose song will spearhead the duo's assault and even boost their battle abilities. Some fascinating little features there.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 launches on Nintendo Switch July 28. An Xbox edition will launch on August 2, with the PC port scheduled for this win??ter. A physical edition is currently in the works at Limited Run Games, with price, details, and releas??e date still to be revealed.

Full trilogy headed to Xbox One and Xbox Series X

Inti Creates has announced that the Azure Striker Gunvolt trilogy is headed to Xbox platforms over the coming months. The first?? title in the hyper-kinetic serie??s will be available to purchase on Xbox One and Xbox Series X today, with its two sequels scheduled to roll out over the summer.

Already available on PlayStation, PC, and Nintendo platforms, Azure Striker Gunvolt is a fast-paced and highly electrifying platform adventure that found fame as a Nintendo 3DS? release wa?y back in 2014. It tells a tale of a highly-skilled, superpowered mercenary, (the titular Gunvolt), who embarks on a mission to eliminate a squad of equally skilled special agents, guided by their mysterious musical muse, Lumen.

Of course, this simple premise merely sets the stage for a dramatic tale of love, loss, revenge, and redemption set alongside action-packed retro-infused gameplay. This popular release would be followed up by Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 in 2016, which continued the story while offering improved gameplay and other dynamic features. A second sequel, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, is in its final product??ion stages, with a release date scheduled for just a few weeks from now.

Azure Striker Gunvolt is available now on Xbox platforms, Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will launch on July 14, while Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will arrive on August 2, five days after its 28 July Switch date. Physical edition coming from Limited Run Games

We are exactly two months out from the launch of the dynamic Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, which is currently in development for Nintendo Switch. Japanese outfit Inti Creates has revealed som?e new tidbits regarding the actio??n-packed sequel, ahead of its anticipated launch on July 28.

First and foremost, it is to be noted that this second mainline sequel will see the Azure Striker Gunvolt series receive a fully scripted English voiceover for the first time in series history. Popular voic?e actors Sean Chiplock, Kelly Baskin, and Ryan Colt Levy will step into the metallic shoes of Gunvolt, Kirin, and Black Badge respectively, while singer Diana Garnet will portray overseer Lumen, aka "The Muse."

Inti Creates als??o offered a first look at the sequel's unique "Story Mode+" option, which will see the entire gameplay out in real-time, seamlessly posting plot details and dialogue directly into the action, without the need for pausing, cutscenes, or any other interruptions. This mode will surely be popular among budding speedrunners, while delivering a non-stop take on the sci-fi action for all other players.

Finally, Limited Run Games revealed that it has opened pre-orders on physical editions of Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 for Nintendo Switch. PhysEd fans can bag themselves a standard boxed copy of the title for $39.99 USD, or splash out on the Collector's Edition, which includes an official art book, double CD soundtrack, and a cute "Dogvolt" keychain for $79.99. Both editions are available to pre-order now from the Limited Run Games store.

Oh, and speaking of soundtracks, be sure to check out the music video below, featuring the Japanese voice of Lumen, Megu Sakura??gawa, performing one of the sequel's many compositions "Trace??s."

Teamwork makes the Dreamwork

It's been a long time coming, but Gunvolt fans finally have cause for celebration, as Inti Creates has announced that the anticipated sequel Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will be bringing its sword-swinging sci-fi mayhem to Nintendo Switch on July 28. The title will be available to purchase digital?ly via the eShop, priced at around $40.

The third chapter in a saga that began on Nintendo 3DS way back in 2014, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will see more dynamic and highly kinetic 2D action as returning protagonist Gunvolt is joined by the deadly and acrobatic Kirin for another tale of magic, machines, and mayhem. Players can switch between the two heroes on the fly, syn??ergizing Gunvol??t's explosive close-combat abilities with Kirin's swordswomanship to lay waste to an army of enemies and mammoth boss characters.

//youtu.be/3icCimtZdLI

In addition to the arrival of Kirin, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will feature a nostalgic "Image Pulse" mechanic, which allows Gunvolt to call upon their memories and utilize the talents of over 150 characters and fallen foes pulled from the entire trilogy of games. And should our heroes perform particularly? well in battle, they will be treated to the beautiful music o??f virtual idol "Anthem," whose songs will then boost the duo's talents in battle. So Anime.

While much of the new sequel remains relatively under wraps particularly concerning its plot, bosses, and chief antagonist Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 is looking pretty durn snazzy in its latest trailer, and fans who have been waiting for the newest chapter of this saga will hopefully be pleased with what Inti Creates has shown to?? date. Speaking of fans, they should take note that a physical edition will follow from Limited Run Games, with details expected on contents and price at a later date.

Looks great, plays great

Where are my Gunvolt fans at? It's crazy to think that this series has been in the mix for nearly eight years now. It's been a whopping 30 years since the original Mega Man X was released, and so many games have attempted to fill the void: even within Capcom's own wheelhouse. After playing Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2, I still feel the same way about Gunvolt: I want this series to live on forever.

Review: Gunvolt Chronicles 1

Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 (PC [reviewed], PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X)
Developer: Inti Creates
Publisher: Inti Creates
Released: January 27, 2022
MSRP: $24.99

Inti Creates has had a crack at a number of different characters in this universe, and although Copen (the star of the spinoff Luminous Avenger) is back, everything is different. The creators take a really cool ??approach here, and set everything in an alternate universe. Copen is enjoying a relax??ing break at home and then BAM: we're suddenly sucked into a different dimension, and we're two months into his explorations there.

It's a framing device I'm a huge fan of, especially since it gets us into the 2D action immediately, and although it's a spinoff of what some would call an obscure series, it's an easy ask for someone to dive into an alternate timeline and not feel like they mi??ssed much. It's animated, too and I mean that literally and figuratively. While I'm sure some will find it annoying, having your AI constantly cheer you on with a fully voiced performance is smart, and injects a lot of personality into an otherwise stoic Copen.

Even the footstep noises on different types of ground are accounted for with stellar sound design, and some of the music tracks would be welcome in a proper Mega Man game?. While stories in 2D games are often pageantry or set dressing, everything comes together here to showcase a lot of personality and draw you in??: even if it's for a moment.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDJBtY6atrA

Copen has some tricks to go along with the new framework. One immediate comparison I thought of when I was thrust into the desert region of Luminous Avenger 2 was Mega Man Zero: right down to Copen's starting melee focus. Once again Copen's ferocity is represented in-game, particularly with the "impact dash," which can be used in mid-air to bump into objects or enemies; then initiate a lock-on sequence where you can unload. As usual, this Gunvolt-franchise joint is streamlined, in a good way. You won't spend copious amounts of time in menus or in tired RPG mechanics. There's a few things you can upgrade, several abilities to swap between, and that's it. Instead, I found myself focusing on actually playing the game, much like a classic Mega Man X series romp.

It's always fascinating to see modern game design in what is ostensibly a retro enthusiast game, too. Luminous Avenger, similar to Shovel Knight, has a system in place that rewards veterans with skipping checkpoints (you keep a higher combo avoiding them), which of course means that death will set you back to the beginning of a stage. Self-imposed challenge systems that don't inherently take away from ??the flow of the game, or require you to fiddle with menus, are very much welcome, if done right.

Likewise, you can avoid healing or using supers to rack up more score; and there's a small amount of hidden objects (four per stage) to encourage exploration without getting overwhelming. "Balance" has always been one of Inti Creates' strengths. They know how to cater to both long-term players and complete newcomers, and I think Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 will satisfy a large spectrum of people.

Review: Gunvolt Chronicles 2

It was especially fun bouncing between both ideologies. On some levels I'd ?let all my special abilities rip, then ??on a repeat play, I'd try and tough things out. Given that Copen is capable of both (excess and lean mechanical use), everything flows no matter what your aim is.

Inti Creates can just keep making games throughout my lifetime. While a lot of studios are making retro-tinted projects, many of them don't hold a candle to what the studio is doing right now. A lot of their works are slept on, but I wouldn't be surprised to see a bunch of Gunvolt games end up on a lot of all-time platformer lists throughout the next decade. Now where's my Mighty Gunvolt Burst sequel? I don't care if Inti Creates has to buy the Mighty No. 9 name and do it right.

Double the pleasure, double the fun

I've been writing for this website for a little more than six years now and there is a lot I've done in my time here that I don't fully remember. That's especially true of many of the games I've reviewed. There is only so much space in my brain for the myriad of 6's that have crossed my path, but one review that will always stand out for me is when Chris Carter and I jointly reviewed Gal Gun: Double Peace. I took the PlayStation Vita version for our review and was in constant awe of just how silly and bawdy that game got. In my opinion, it's the best entry in the series. If you want to judge for yourself, you can buy it right now on the PlayStation store or just wait to pick up the Gal Gun: Double Peace Switch definitive edition early next year.

If you haven't played Double Peace or any of the prior Gal Gun titles, the game is an on-rails shooter starring Houdai, an unseen protagonist who has to fend off hoards of girls who want to love him until it hurts. Armed with a Pheremone Shot, players will travel through?out Houdai's school and beyond looking? for his one true love or else risk living alone forever. The game features multiple girls Houdai can choose and secret endings for those willing to put in the work to find every available path in the game.

//youtu.be/7d4p_x1oLSE

So what are you getting with this "definitive" version of Double Peace? Well, a lot, actually. Not only will it contain the full game from 2015, but nearly all the DLC costumes released for the original release will be included as well. There will also be a new opening animation, and if you own either of the two previous Gal Gun titles for Switch, you can expect some goodies as well. Inti Creates is teasing exclusive content for those who own Gal Gun 2 and/or Gal Gun Returns.

What hasn't been confirmed yet–at least not in any language I can read–is whether or not Double Peace on Switch will have the touch screen control option of the PlayStation Vita version. Touch controls were not available in either Gal Gun 2 or Gal Gun Returns, so it wouldn't surprise me if this is a touchless affair as well. It's not a? dealbreaker without it, but some parts of the game definitely benefit from being able to finger your way through them.

Gal Gun: Double Peace will arrive on Switch on March 17, 2022.

During Inti Creates' BitSummit stream

In case you missed it, Inti Creates had a jam-packed Gunvolt announcement showcase last night as part of this year's BitSummit festivities. In it they announced their newest project: Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2. But what about Azure Striker Gunvolt 3, the main??line entry? It's still due for 2022, but it got narrowed down just a?? bit.

According to the stream (captured by Gematsu), Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 is going to take "??a little longer." Although it did have a nebulous 2022 date to begin with, the statement implies that it was going to arrive sooner in the year; now, it's slated for "summer 2022." The team is?? "confident it will be an excellent game," and intends to "continue [working] at this pace" to ensure that it does launch next summer.

Amazingly, the stream (which is in the Level 5comcept conference room) also features a blast from the past: Keiji Inafune. After the Mighty No. 9 and Red Ash (I never forgot) debacles he was in hiding a bit at Level 5, but he's continued to work on the Azure Striker Gunvolt mainline g??ames as both an executi??ve producer and "action supervisor."

In any case, Inafune is serving this series better than some of the more high-pr?ofile projects he's been attached to in recent years.

A sequel to Luminous Avenger

I'm shocked that Inti Creates is able to keep the Gunvolt series running this long: in a good way! They're at the point where they're doing spinoffs upon spinoffs, and now one of those is getting a sequel! Announced today at Bitsummit, Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 is coming in 2022.

Itself a follow-up to 2019's Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX, Copen returns as the hero once again, but will sport new tricks to take on enemies. One of the new gimmicks is the "razor wheel," a weapon Copen is donning to "traverse an enormous tower" as part of the new narrative. After beating a boss he can gobble up new weapons, following in the same Mega Man style as some past entries.

Inti Creates specifically tells us that his dash power has been "powered up" in Luminous Avenger iX 2, allowing for more technical maneuvers, including? air dashes that sport quicker movement overall. Your companion Lola will also return, who h?as enhanced healing capabilities and will continue to bring you back from the dead.

So here's the full info dump from Inti Creates. Gunvolt Chronicles: Luminous Avenger iX 2 is due out on January 27, 2022, priced a??t $24.99. It'll be available on PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Yes! No exclusives here, it's on basically everything; though a physical rel??ease is still "TBD" according to the studio.

You can find a full gallery of screenshots below, and the official site is set to go live here shortly.

Blasting off again

Blaster Master is a series that's near and dear to my heart, mostly because of the impact the 1988 original had on me. Being able to swap between 2D traditional platforming and top-down on-foot sections was mesmerizing, and beating it felt like a triumph. The Blaster Master Zero series by Inti Creates has significantly cut down on some of that retro-flavored frustration (for good reason), and added a bit of their own signature sauce into the mix. It's hard to believe we're on Blaster Master Zero 3 at this point.

It's been?? a ride watching this animefied version of Jason evolve, but I think the release of the third game is the perfect time to end this saga.

Review: Blaster Master Zero 3

Blaster Master Zero 3 (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Switch [reviewed])
Developer: Inti Creates
Publisher: Inti Creates
Released: July 29, 2021
MSRP: $14.99

After watching the recap and reminding myself of the past antics of Jason and his friends, I thought I was prepared for what awaited me in Zero 3. Nope! The story is kind of out of control at this point, with mixed results. We're still mostly following Jason as he pilots his modified Sophia tank, but now he's marooned and captured on the planet Sophia and all bets are off. The?re's enough "wait, you're still aliv?e?", "whose side are you on, anyway?!", and mutant clones to fill a football field.

Of course, a series about a boy who drives a techno-tank and befriends a mutant frog was always a bit askew, and the original Japanese edition of the game more closely followed the epic war on Sophia between Kane and the evil Goez. The new Zero line has wonderfully crossed these two storylines over, but there's a lot of babbling to wade through. If you're a Zero lore nut, the good news is there??'s tons of dialogue full of little tidbits that shed more insight into this universe.

The thing is, for me, I was thrilled at the prospect of starting over with the first Zero, but my interest waned a bit over time. Seeing where Inti Creates could go, and how the reimagining could diverge from the source material was a fascinating prospect. In retrospect, some of the choices they made earlier were going to make it tough to really secure a payoff. While they've delivered on some fronts, a few story beats didn't really land for me. The good news is that Blaster Master Zero 3 is mostly an action platformer, and y??ou?? can skip through most of the story scenes if you want.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=KgmGp7nalUM

Zero 3 strikes a very familiar tone, marrying classic 2D sidescrolling platforming sections with top-down shooter action. The whole "I lost my equipment from past games" trope is out in full force, but it's totally excusable here and even has a story-based justification for it. It also leads us down a path of unique upgrades, some of which take advantage of the new dimensional rift gimmic??k. There are a few tweaks, like a jetpack for on-foot Jason, a very generous counter/sword slash mechanic, and a VRV (vision reversal visor) toggle for the aforementioned rift system but for the most part, the core is the same as it has been in the prior two games.

What's especially neat is the flow of combat. By slamming down into the ground from a high point with your Sophia tank, you can recharge your energy reserve, which is used to hover and pay for special?? weapons like missiles, or puzzle-solving tools like electricity blasts. The on-foot sections are especially dynamic in the sense that you have a selection of weapons to choose from (like a wave blast that goes through walls, a short-range whip, or a lock-on tool), all of which need to be wielded to best some puzzle sequences. The smooth animation of Jason's dodge is also very sty??????????????????????????lish while keeping its effectiveness intact.

Even though I vastly prefer the on-foot sequences, Zero 3 does a decent job of balancing the give and take of its tank platforming and vehicular action pacing, as you really start to find a groove of when to use each ability or Sophia power when the situation arises. The spider-treads are a perfect example, as you can use them to get past obviou?s sequence-halting areas, or to walk over p?oison water without submerging your tank.

Review: Blaster Master Zero 3

While the action/platforming is fun in both systems, several portions feel extremely linear to the point where I was sleepwalking through tunnels with sparing enemies just to move on and hope the next area was more exciting. Bosses are surprisingly plentiful, but a few of them have the same vibe as those same simplistic zones, and are just going through the motions of a few greatest hits retro enemy concepts. Inti Creates is generally known for their memorable boss fights, but there were a handful in Blaster Master Zero 3 that I'm struggling to recall.

Despite some gripes, the legacy of this trilogy is fully secure. Inti Creates can kind of keep making these types of platformers indefinitely, and I'd keep playing them. But in the case of Blaster Master Zero, at this point, it's totally OK for them to take a break. So long as we keep getting mainline Gunvolts, Curse of the Moons, and maybe another Mighty Gunvolt Burst.

Blaster Master Zero III promises to deliver another megaton of NES-styled carnage, as protagonist Jason once again takes to the pilot's seat of the powerful G-SOPHIA SV all-terrain vehicle. Setting off on an epic mission that will see him return to where it all began the planet Sophia Jason begins an all-out effort to save the life of his friend and long-suffering companion, Eve. It's been a surprisingly dramatic tale, juxtaposed against Blaster Master Zero's simplistic and destructive gameplay. Here's hoping for a happy ending for our hero??es. They've most definitel?y earned one.

Blaster Master Zero III will launch on the aforementioned platforms in the west on July 29. In Japan, Inti Creates will also release the Blaster Master Zero Trilogy: MetaFight Chronicle set, which will include all three adventures, alongside all previously released DLC and newly recorded Japanese voiceovers for Blaster Master Zero I & II. Unfortunately, there appear to be no plans to release this inclusive package in western territories. Additionally, today sees the launch of the original Blaster Master Zero on Xbox platforms, with Blaster Master Zero II to follow on July 15

Is this the end for Blaster Master? Possibly. But it should be noted that Inti Creates has frequently referred to Blaster Master Zero III concluding the "Jason Saga", and thus the series may return in the future, simply under the guise of an all-new narra?tive arc. Let's ke?ep the tank a-rollin', I say. There are few modern franchises that can trace their roots back to the halcyon days of 1987.

Tanks for the memories

Inti Creates has announced that it will be bringing the first two Blaster Master Zero titles to Xbox platforms next month, in preparation for the arrival of new release Blaster Master Zero III on July 29. The original 2017 release, Blaster Master Zero, will launch July 1, with 2019 sequel Blaster Master Zero II to follow on July 15. Both titles will retail for around $10?? USD each.

Originally launched on the 3DS and Nintendo Switch, the Blaster Master Zero titles are old-school action-adventure titles that retain the aesthetic quality of retro gaming platforms such as the NES and the Super Nintendo, while being spruced up with modern mechanics, attractive anime artwork, and dramatic, character-driven storylines. Players control the G-SOPHIA tank as it travels through dangerous alien terrain, negotiating hazards, fighting off enemies, and exploring strange, colourful worlds in a series of mi?ssions that place both friends and the galaxy's fortune at stake.

In Japan, Inti Creates will release a special edition titled Blaster Master Zero Trilogy: MetaFight Chronicle, which will include all three titles, all previously released DLC, and even newly recorded voiceovers for the first two titles in the series. Unfortunately?, there is still no word of this edition being made ava??ilable in western territories.

Blaster Master Zero launches on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S July 1, it will be followed by Blaster Master Zero II on July 15 and Blaster Master Zero III on July 29. Pre-order customers will receive a 20% ??discount on the first two titles.

All-Terrain-Violence

At the start of March, we received wicked news that Blaster Master Zero III was currently in develop?ment, and getting set to bring its interstellar action to PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Publisher Inti Cre?ates has now confirmed that this climactic chapter will also release on Xbox One alongside its aforementioned brethren on July 29.

This third and final entry in the resurrected retro franchise will see protagonist Jason get behind the wheel of the G-SOPHIASV battle tank one last time, going all-out in a do-or-die mission to save the life of his dear friend Eve. The new title will see the action return to the planet Sophia, as well a?s s?panning several galaxies and dimensions. It sounds like an epic, and a great way to cap off a very enjoyable trilogy.

In Japan, Inti Creates will also release the Blaster Master Zero Trilogy: MetaFight Chronicle, which will include all three titles in the series, alongside their respective DLC. In addition, MetaFight Chronicle will feature newly recorded dialogue for the first two titles in the series. Unfortunately, ther?e has yet to be any confirmation that this compilation will be hea??ded west at any point.

Arcade-action chaos returns in 2022

One of the most pleasing announcements from this week's New Game Expo Plus (NGPX) presentation was the confirmation that gorgeous pixel action series Azure Striker Gunvolt will be making its return next. Currently in development at Inti Creates, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will come explo?ding onto Nintendo Switch at some point in 2022.

A sequel to Nintendo 3DS releases Azure Striker Gunvolt (2014) and Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (2016), the new title will bring a new slew of hyper-kinetic characters and missions, with series director Yoshihisa Tsuda teaming up with both LEVEL 5 supervisor Keiji Inafune and Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon director Hiroki Miyazawa to create an actio??n-intensive, dramatic, and pulse-pounding new sequel.

You can check out the announcement video below, along?? with a few clip??s of a demo build in action. It's looking pretty darn slick.

Getting ready to roll out this summer

One of the most pleasing announcements from yesterday's New Game Plus Expo (NGPX) presentation was the surprise news that retro-infused sci-fi actioner Blaster Master Zero is getting ready to blast off for one final chapter. Blaster Master Zero III is in developme??nt for  PS4, PC, and Nintendo Switch, and is scheduled to launch on July 29.

The third and final entry in the resurrected retro franchise will see protagonist Jason return to where it all began, the planet Sophia, in a last-ditch effort to save the life of Ev?e in the dramatic climax to the interstellar story. Once again piloting the sturdy and heav??ily armed G-SOPHIASV battle tank, Jason will face off against hordes of new enemies and boss characters in an adventure that will see our heroes not only cross the stars, but dimensions.

In addition to this second sequel, Inti Creates also announced that it is producing a compilation title, Blaster Master Zero Trilogy: MetaFight Chronicle. This release will feature all three titles in the Blaster Master Zero franchise, along with all previously released DLC. As a trilogy-exclusive feature, new voiceover work will be added to the first two titles in the series. It has not been made clear whether the trilogy release will be made available in the west, but is scheduled to launch in Japan alongside Blaster Master Zero III.

Japanese-centric publisher stream returns

You might remember that during the months and months of E3's 2020 live stream showcases, (which I dubbed "Endless3" because I'm a talented man), the New Game+ Expo made its debut presentation - a special stream?? featuring a glut of news and reveals from Japanese-centric publishers such as Arc System Works, NIS, Aksys, Natsume, and others.

And it looks like the show is set to return, although this time you won't have to wait until the summer, as New Game+ Expo 2021 will be taking place as soon as? next month, Ma??rch 4 to be exact. Not all of the previously featured studios are returning, (SNK, Spike Chunsoft, and WayForward are among the missing names), but 10 studios will be on-hand to showcase some of their 2021 wares.

Tune in to the official Twitch channel on Thursday, March 4 at 08:00 PT / 11:00 ET / 17:00 BST and check out some of the colorful titles gracing PC and console platforms late??r this year. The full list of attendees for New Game+ Expo 2021 is as follows:

  • Aksys Games

  • GungHo America
  • Koei Tecmo
  • Idea Factory International
  • Inti Creates

Young girl, you're out of your mind

I never thought I'd be the type of person who'd enjoy a game where you pump high school girls full of pheromones to satisfy their needs, but here I am reviewing my third Gal*Gun title. Despite clearly not being in its target demographic, I've always enjoyed the absurdity of it all. It's nice to have something downrigh?t outlandish to revel in while the rest of the industry pushes toward that homogenized center.

Of course, that absurdity and outlandishness come at a price, and the Gal*Gun franchise has always been in the middle of one controversy or another. Gal*Gun Returns is no different as a few weeks ago, we learne??d the Xbox One port of the title had been canceled after ??some "productive discussions" with Microsoft.

Having seen wh??at this series can do, the move didn't surprise me. But now that I've played it, the cancellation seems even more ridiculous as this is easily the tamest entry in the ?franchise.

Gal Gun Returns

Gal*Gun Returns (Switch [reviewed], PC)
Developer: Inti Creates
Publisher: PQube Games
Released: February 12, 2021
MSRP: $49.99

Gal*Gun Returns takes players back to where it all started 10 years ago. Apprentice cupid angel Patako is nearing her graduation, and her last task to shoot a student with a Pheromone Shot. Unfortunately, her equipment goes haywire and unloads a bevy?? of arrows into the back of Tenzou Montesugi, an unpopular student who's about to be the hottest kid in school. Because of how many times he was shot, Tenzou has until the end of the day to profess his love to the girl of his dreams or risk being alone forever.

It's a premise later games in the Gal*Gun series have tweaked upon, but in Returns, the set-up is at its most basic. There are no branching paths here. You simply pick the girl you want to pursue fr??om the start and get going after?? her.

Standing between you and a happily ever after are?? throngs of students and few faculty ?members you need to satiate with those Pheromone Shots. As you move through the school, girls will ambush you unless you can pump them full of enough mojo to satisfy their needs. If there are too many girls to handle, activate Doki Doki mode, and you'll get a chance to give one of the girls some personal euphoria. If you manage to hit all the right spots within the time limit, pleasing her will satisfy the rest of the girls on screen.

While Gal*Gun Returns is technically a rail shooter, it's a very primitive take on the genre, and in practice, it's closer to a simple shooting gallery than anything else. That's not a bad thing as it's quite a decent shooting gallery game. My favorite shooting bits happen when you and your chosen waifu have a one-on-one moment with its own unique set of rules. Shoot the sheep, pick the lyrics, defeat the tentacle monster; I only wish Returns featured more moments like this as the main narrative is a bit too limited and repetitive. You'll see some locations multiple times running through?? the story mode with each girl.

In fact, most of this game is pretty basic compared to what's come after it. It's not nearly as scandalous as Double Peace or Gal*Gun 2 as it lacks some of the features that made those games as naughty as they are. You can't vacuum the clothes off the girls, Doki Doki mode is very hands-off, and while the game boasts 423 different pairs of panties, they can be difficult to see without heading into some of the other modes or changing up the girls' costumes. This definitely feels like Inti Creates putting its toe in the water to s??ee what it could get away with rather than diving straight in.

As is the case with all the Gal*Gun titles, the girls in Returns look fantastic. The character models here are very bright and distinct, and while they may be weari?ng the same uniforms, I got to know most of them through my repeated playthroughs and return trips to Doki Doki mode. The school itself looks noticeably better than it did back on the Xbox 360, even if the art direction is rather sterile. Most of the school is barren, empty, and lacking in vivid colors or lighting.

While it isn't the best looking Gal*Gun title on Switch, it runs well enough with no noticeable drops in the framerate, smooth reticule movement, and a control scheme that makes sense for the type of simple rail shooter it is. There are, however, far too many loading screens to sit through. It would have been nice if more of the Switch's features were worked into this remaster. There are no gyroscopic controls, no touch controls in handheld mode, and, most bizarrely, Gal*Gun Returns man?ages to screw up one of the main selling points of the Switch.

Gal Gun Returns

When playing on my? television with my Pro Controller, I took my console out of its dock to play in handheld mode while I made dinner. Unfortunately, after I picked it up, none of the controls worked. Couldn't shoot, couldn't exit back to the title screen, couldn't work the menu. The only thing I could do is hit the home button to exit out of the game and manually remove my Pro Controller so I could actually play in handheld mode. It's a strange oversight on the developer's part and something I hope they fix in an update.

If you find the experience to be to your liking, there is quite a bit of content to dive into. Gal*Gun Returns has a ridiculous number of p??ortraits to unlock, a fantasize mode where you can fight the controls to get the girls into the right position you want so you can "observe" them, and a post-story campaign called Doki Doki Carnival that's mildly amusing and only moderately entertaining. You get all that, plus most of the DLC that was released for the original game and new story elements that flesh out the narrative.

Gal*Gun Returns is a pretty decent remaster of a so-so game barring a few issues. I don't think anybody is going to walk away from it?? arguing it's the best in the series, but it's worthwhile for fans who've wanted to see where this franchise got its start. And if you're anything like me, it'll make you appreci??ate what's come after it all the more.

There's a lot of ways they could go here

When Inti Creates speaks, I listen.

They've proven themselves time and time again; not just with their own company, but with their work on countless Capcom classics, like the Mega Man Zero and ZX series. They're a force to be reckoned with in the platforming space, and they're still pumping out hits like the Blaster Master revival and two Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon games.

Speaking to 4Gamer, company president Takuya Aizu explains that in addition to Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 (which looks enticing in its? own right) there are "three new titles in development." It's entirely possible that we'll see the announcement of these three in 2021.

So what's next for the company? Well, they could sequelize a lot of their games until the cows come home. I'd take another Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon, as well as another Blaster Master Zero. Gunvolt seems to be their bread and butter though so a spinoff could be tucked ??away in one of those three reveals; and they're also perfect??ly capable of making an original title.

I also want to see them collaborate directly with Capcom again on Mega Man. Now that the franchise is back from the? dead, I'm sure they can work something out.

Super Sexual Shooter suffers 'consistency issues'

Developer Inti Creates has announced that it is cancelling the Xbox One port of its upcoming remaster Gal Gun Returns, despite development havin??g reached completion on the Microsoft platform.

In a statement posted to Twitter yesterday, Inti Creates said that while Gal Gun Returns has a fully fi??nished master ROM ready for review, ongoing discussions with Mic??rosoft have led to the decision to cancel the Xbox port altogether, citing that the developer could no longer "ensure consistency of experience" across all platforms. Hmm...

Gal Gun Returns is a remaster of the notorious 2011 rail shooter Gal Gun, which sees the player step into the role of a male student - armed with a barrage of "Pheromone Arrows" - on a quest to hook up with the gal of their dreams. To achieve this end, the protagonist must fend off the obsessive desire of an entire school full of girls, bringing them to a state ??of "euphoria" with well-placed "Ecstasy Shots".

While Inti Creates remains (slightly) obscure with its comments, it's not hard at all to read between the lines of what has happened here - especially considering that the original Xbox 360 version of Gal Gun w??as issued a Microsoft-decreed patch to restrict camera controls.

As far as Inti Creates is concerned, Gal Gun Returns is still scheduled for launch in the west, February 12, on PC and Nintendo Switch. Pre-order customers will bag a limited edition "Smells Like a Girl" bookmark. Lordy.

Dragon and on and on...

Inti Creates has released a huge update for its platform adventure Dragon Marked for Death. Available to download right now on all platforms, Version 3.1.3 brings a huge list of ??adjustm?ents, bug fixes, and balance tweaks to the multiplayer title on PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.

First and foremost, 20 new quests have been added for Le??vel 120 players, offering increased XP, rewards, and a higher percentage of rare loot for top-tier adventurers. All of the player characters have been tweaked across the board, with Empress, Warrior, Shinobi, Witch, and other classes having gone through an intricate re-balance. For the most part, all characters have been left in a better?? position than they were before.

The huge catalog of weapons, gear, and accessories has also been re-balanced, with changes made to the stats and effects attached to both Dragon Marked for Death's arsenal of death-dealers and its sharp wardrobe. In addition, several nagging bugs and issues have finally been corrected. There are far too many individual changes to list here, but hardy adventurers can check out the full patch notes over on the official website.

On November 29

It's kind of amazing how far the Azure Striker Gunvolt series has come.

I've talked about it quite a bit over the past few years, but multiple core iterations and several spinoffs: that's quite the win for Inti Creates, who has managed to craft multiple new IPs and revivals in recent years. They're really killing it year after year; and hopefully Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 will continue that trend.

Due out on Switch at some point next year, Azure Striker Gunvolt 3 brings back the titular Gunvolt af?ter Copen took the ??spotlight away with his spinoff, as well as the sword-wielding newcomer Kirin. As is tradition it was announced at BitSummit earlier this year, but since then we've been waiting for any real news beyond the ?basics. It? won't be much longer now, though.

Inti Create says that we'll get to peek behind the curtain soon enough, as the game will be shown to the public for the first time ever at the Akihabara UDX digital games expo on November 29. The studio says that "playable demos will be on-hand" ??as well. That's a little over a month! I'm beyond excited, as I'm pumped to see how Kirin plays. Hopefully she does the old school melee style justice: I know Inti Creates is capable of it.

It was also on PC, 3DS, PS4, Vita and Xbox One

Bloodstained: Curse of the Moon is pretty good! So is the sequel. ?But as it turns out, Inti Creates says that the first game so??ld pretty well too.

Speaking to Nintendo Everything, Inti Cre??ates has confirmed that the game has sold "over 600,000 copies." Studio CEO Takuya Aizu explains that the boost is "in part powered by the relea??se of [the sequel]." Aizu also states that "more than half of those sales" are from the Switch edition. Quite the feat given that it was also released on every other major platform.

Note that Curse of the Moon came out in mid-2018, so it has some long legs if it's just now reaching that milestone. While it was available on PC, 3DS, PS4, Vita and Xbox One in addition to the Switch, the sequel shored up so?me of those platforms, only appearing on PC, PS4, Xbox One and Switch.

It makes perfect sense that if there is m??ore of a global s??aturation of Switch users in 2020, folks who picked up the second game on the platform would mosey on over to the original.

Get your love gun cocked and ready

Western audiences may have got their first taste of Gal*Gun with Gal*Gun: Double Peace, but the roots of the titillating series go all the way back to the Xbox 360 with its Japanese-exclusive debut. Even as its sequels found their way to audiences worldwide, that original never left Japan. Next year, however, that'll change with Gal*Gun Returns.

From Inti Creates, this remake of the? original title will feature improved graphics, more than 250 illustrations??, voice acting for every girl in the game, all the DLC from the original release, new CGs, multiplayer Doki Doki mode, and underwear out the wazoo.

These are the types of out-of-the-blue announcements I just love. Gal*Gun Returns wil??l launch next year for Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and PC.
