Dillon rolls into the sunset

Vanpool Inc. is closing its doors. The Japanese studio, known for both its support work on Nintendo games as well as its own games, such as Dillon's Rolling Western, has announced it is shutting down.

The news was posted on the studio's official site, saying the team has decided to disband. No overt reason was given, but the studio does expre?s??s gratitude for its fans.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNUer6t0bl4

Vanpool was one of the studios started by former Love-de-Lic developers, alongside studios like Punchline (Chulip, Rule of Rose) and Skip Ltd. (Chibi-Robo!, LOL).

Back in 2001, Vanpool released its first game with Endonesia on the PS2. From there on, it made some fun, unique games; Dillon's Rolling Western, for one. And there's also the bizarre, memorable Freshly-Picked Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland.

A slight tingle

Alongside its own games, Vanpool also supported several Nintendo titles. The Kirby series (including Forgotten Land and the recently released Return to Dream Land Deluxe) dots Vanpool's resume. The studio also contributed to Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash.

It's a shame to see a studio like this go. It's hard not to think of Alphadream, or the curiously quiet Skip Ltd. mentioned before, too. These studios, and their history, represent a different kind of games than we usually see. And it's a team that played a role in Nintendo's recent success with Kirby, too.

Hopefully, everyone involved lands somewhere new.

It "might've been something that's maybe slightly too steep"

Did you play through Kirby and the Forgotten Land yet? What did you think of the final boss? Well, director Shinya Kumazaki thinks that maybe things were a little too intense at the end there. IGN spoke to Kumazaki at GDC, and he had som??e really interesting thing??s to say about the difficulty curve as a whole.

On the concept of difficulty, he notes:

"When you're thinking about maybe your childhood experience playing video games, there might have been games where you just feel like it's impossible to beat because it's so diff?icult. And I think the idea is that to be able ?to provide something that you can enter easily and is approachable, but also provide that sense of achievement in that you might have an experience where you're playing a game as a younger self, or even now. There comes a moment when you achieve something or you did something and you're like, ‘Okay, I can get it now. I did it.And that sense of achievement is as a result of the person playing the game their skill level is going up, and also becoming used to how to play that game."

All of this leads to the point in the curve where it reaches its apex: which is arguably the final boss in Forgotten Land. On the efficacy of that realizat??ion of said apex, he notes:

"For the first time in the Kirby series, we provided two different difficulty levels to really try to also provide an option for the experienced gamer audience to get a more fulfilling gameplay experience. And I think we were abl??e to do that. But perhaps the steep uphill curve towards the end of the game, especially the final boss, might've been something that's maybe slightly too steep, and perhaps we can look into maybe balancing it out a little bit. ??That's something that I want to continue to explore"

I get it. Given how accessible Forgotten Land is at its co?re, I can see how the boss? design (not just the final boss) could scare away some folks.

What a finale!

Without spoiling anything, the final boss (really, the final area as a whole) of Kirby and the Forgotten Land is wild. Once everything started going down I laughed at the absurdity of it all, and had an amazing time navigating it. It was one of the highlights of my Kirby-game-playing???? career, dating all the way back to the original on Game Boy during road trips as a kid.

I'd love to see the series experiment more with this (or even a spinoff somehow with a different character), but given how streamlined Kirby games are supposed to be by design: I get the need to pause t??o refle??ct on what tact the franchise should take going forward.

It sold over four million since March 25

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is the fastest-selling Kirby ever, according to a new passage from Nintendo's latest financial report (page 13).

Here's Nintendo's breakdown:

"Kirby and the Forgotten Land, released on March 25, saw global cumulative sellthrough in its first 15 weeks of over 4 million units. This marks the highest sellthrough of any entry to date in the Kirby series, which celebrated its 30th anniv?ersary in April of this year.?"

Despite being the fastest-selling Kirby ever, as of right now, Kirby's Dream Land /em> the 1992 Game Boy original is the only title in the series that is towering over it. Dream Land has held the title since the series started, and has peddled over five million copies to date according to Nintendo. Having beaten it at least 100 times on car rides for over a decade (the "Extra Game" playthrough addition was genius), this checks out! It's crazy to think that all those years ago there was a Kirby game where Satoru Iwata served as a programmer, and Smash boss Masahiro Sakurai directed it.

How does this new figure relate to the overall big picture of Nintendo software? Well, Forgotten Land is doing pretty great overall! It has a long road ahead to crack into the top 10 all-time Switch list, and puts things into perspective where Kirby is, franchise-wise. The same thing goes for Metroid! These are big-time properties, but the g??ames are generally smaller successes.

Thankfully, Nintendo isn't pulling a Square Enix and is still putting Kirby games out. These numbers are definitely enough to keep things moving on this series, and we even have a ??spinoff coming in the next few months. Although a lot of franchises have peaks and valleys of popularity and are occas??ionally shelved, you really can't keep Kirby down.

This motion-based Kirby and the Forgotten Land mini-game is harder than it looks

One of the hardest bits of Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a simple little motion-controlled puzzle board. No joke: I'm struggling more with the Tilt-and-Roll Kirby mini-game than I ever did in the Ultimate Cup Z, a boss-rush arena with harder variants of th??e big baddies.

All I have to do is avoid pitfalls and tap the Kirby ball into the hole by tilting my Nintendo Switch ~just so~, but my nerves refuse to chill out. I'm wasting a bunch of time and coins trying to com??pletely f??inish this content the final "Extra Hard" variant has other ideas.

To back up a bit, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, like many Kirby games before it, has some cute side activities to bolster the main adventure. This one Tilt-and-Roll Kirby starts out that way at least. If you're playing along right now and haven't come across any of this yet, you'll need to save 180 Waddle Dees before this mini-game tent comes to town.

[caption id="attachment_316322" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Tilt and Roll Kirby second gyro puzzle board The second board is a cinch, even with two Kirbys.[/caption]

There are three motion-controlled puzzle boards to complete, and the first two aren't bad at all. The third one, though... I spent dozens of attempts and I'm still not sure how to reliably pull off the last zig-zagging stretch. Thankfully, you only need to get through the (much more forgiving) Normal versions of these boards to score a Game-Shop Waddle Dee figure for your capsule collecti??on, so the Extra Hard variants are for bragging rights.

I'm having such a blast savoring every morsel of Kirby and the Forgotten Land, so I can't stop now. I just need to get through this EX course once. That's what I keep telling myself.

Are you too good for your home?

[caption id="attachment_316292" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Tilt and Roll Kirby third gyro puzzle board The Extra Hard variant of the third Tilt-and-Roll Kirby board is intimidating.[/caption]

I've tri??ed playing with perfect posture, slouching a bit, slouching a lot, laying down on my back, laying on my stomach, the works. I always over-correct in the final few seconds.

You get 999 Star Coins and a checkmark for beating the Extra Hard third board in under 30 seconds. Does it "matter?" No! Will I ever look at it again? Absolutely not. But I need that validation. I won't let the sunk-cost fallacy deter my me??aningless gaming o??bsessions.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8qJtruSz2U

Here's footage of an Extra Hard clear captured by YouTube user MewtwoStruckBack, just in case. Sometimes, watching another person beat a challe?nge is literally all that's needed to stroll into another attempt and knock it out of the park. I wasn't so fortunate this time.

I don't have any particular advice for this third round I'm not aware of any Breath of the Wild-style maze-subverting strategies but I thought it'd be fun to share our pain.

Maybe I'd have an easier time if I had grown up playing Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble on Game Boy Color. As neat as it seemed at the time, that translucent pink cartridge was too much of a risky prospect with a super lim??ited gamer kid budget. I'm not cut out for these gimmicks!

An easily overlooked ability helped me clinch it

The more I sink into Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the more I love it and it already left a strong impression after the first few worlds. I'm nearing 100%, and I can't stop now. If you're working toward that goal and haven't qui??te been able to survive the Ultimate Cup Z in the colosseum, I've got a small tip that might make all the difference; it did for me!

Like prior Kirby games, it's relatively smooth sailing on your first run th?rough the main story but the post-game "boss rush" content is??n't afraid to push back hard.

I really respect that duality, as it makes Kirby feel approachable yet deep. I also think Kirby and the Forgotten Land, specifically, will put a magnifying glass on the series' longstanding design principles. If you've kept up with games like Planet Robobot and Star Allies and survived their fiercest challenges, you know the drill. But this Switch title is going wide.

In case you missed it, Kirby has a perfect dodge

Case in point, without even realizing it until it was too late, I went through basically all of the main quest without dodging. Flash forward to the post-game, and I'm now in a place where I use this move constantly dodging ?is so ridiculously powerful as a way to avoid ?damage and also dish it back out with last-second "perfect dodge" counter-attacks.

You might be thinking, "Wait, that's the tip??? Just dodging? I already knew that!"

I'm saving the real tips for below the spoiler gate, but I was curious if anyone else accidentally overlooked Kirby's dodge for way too long. Just in case you're reading this article and you haven't picked up on it yet, you can dodge by holding one of the triggers (I personally find the L button most comfortable) and then tapping the left analog stick in your preferred direction. There's a very generous window in which Kirby won't take damage while escaping, and if you wait to dodge until just before a hit? would land, you'll get some slow-mo and a chance to counter-attack. Try? it out! Punish 'em.

**Spoilers below**

[caption id="attachment_315603" align="alignnone" width="1280"]The Ultimate Cup Z is a boss rush with 12 fights The Ultimate Cup Z is a boss rush with 12 fights.[/caption]

Okay, so, Ultimate Cup Z it m??akes the Ultimate Cup seem like a cakewalk!

It's a back-to-back boss rush featuring 12 battles against phantom versions of Kirby and the Forgotten Land's beastly baddies, and t??here are minimal healing items between bouts, so you have to a??void death by a thousand cuts. The multi-phase true final boss is a doozy.

If you're at this point, you've finished the main story, gotten through the remixed levels in the post-game Isolated Isles: Forgo Dreams realm, and survived the boss fight against Morpho Knight. Let's just take a moment to process that gosh, this game goes places.

My best b?et for finishing Ultimate Cup Z the first time was a multi-pro??nged approach.

Give yourself the best odds against this boss rush

[caption id="attachment_315599" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Deep Sleep Don't underestimate Deep Sleep's boons.[/caption]

  • Make sure you have the Deep Sleep ability ready to go at Waddle Dee's Weapon Shop. You can find the blueprint in the Burning, Churning Power Plant level, then use Deep Sleep whenever you need it back at the town. It can give you an attack or speed boost, but the most useful perk for colosseum purposes is a second HP bar.

[caption id="attachment_315605" align="alignnone" width="1280"]The Maxim Tomato costs 100 Star Coins Swallow your pride and bring a Maxim Tomato.[/caption]

  • Get some extra breathing room with a Maxim Tomato to-go order from the Waddle Dee Café, and save it for an emergency. If you need a quick 100 coin top-up, I'd recommend the fishing mini-game (unless you're bad at it, which, fair enough).

[caption id="attachment_315602" align="alignnone" width="1280"]The Morpho Knight stats in Kirby and the Forgotten Land A beautiful weapon with a beautiful moveset.[/caption]

  • The go-to weapon for Ultimate Cup Z is the Morpho Knight Sword, especially its upgraded form (a costly fee of 2,500 Star Coins and 5 Rare Stones). Not only does the sword hit hard, and have an even better dodge, but it also slightly heals Kirby after landing a string of strikes. This can add up and give you more room to recover from mistakes while you're still perfecting phantom bosses' alternate movesets.

[caption id="attachment_315601" align="alignnone" width="1280"]The Morpho Knight Sword's homing attack The Morpho Knight Sword's homing attack in action.[/caption]

  • If you already knew all of these pointers, here's an overlooked tip that helped me beat Ultimate Cup Z: the Morpho Knight Sword has a ranged homing attack. While holding a trigger (again, I prefer using the L button), also hold down the B button and let go â€?Kirby will be circled by phantoms, then they'll chase after the boss. In fights like Phantom Forgo Dedede, Phantom Sillydillo, and the final phase of Chaos Elfilis, this ability is a godsend. You can whittle them down from a safe distance.

[caption id="attachment_315598" align="alignnone" width="1280"]The final phase of Chaos Elfilis The final phase of Chaos Elfilis is a war of attrition.[/caption]

  • Generally, it's smart to play it safe until you're confident. Instead of trying to go HAM on a boss 100% of the time, learn their attacks, then punish them with a perfect-dodge follow-up. It's a balance, and it pays to know exactly when to go all-in.
  • You're probably on top of it already, but if you're short on Star Coins or Rare Stones needed for Copy Ability upgrades at the weapon shop, here's a list of present codes.

I'm not exaggerating when I say that the first time I got through Ultimate Cup Z in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, I had just one HP left and so did Chaos Elfilis. Without Morpho Knight Sword's homing attack, I wouldn't have m?ade it. Talk about a sigh of relief.

If you're struggling, you can get there too. I had my doubts, but the closer I got, the more determined I became. Now I can beat this arena without sweating bull?ets, which I never would've expected given how badly my first attempts we??nt. Practice paid off.

[caption id="attachment_315604" align="alignnone" width="1280"]The victory screen for Ultimate Cup Z in Kirby and the Forgotten Land No matter how you reach it, this victory feels so freaking good.[/caption]

Now that I'm just trying to unlock the final ??dozen or so capsule figures (and Morpho Knight Kirby is honestly OP), I'm finding the colosseum to b?e an oddly relaxing grind. It's been a blast learning all of the boss attacks and figuring out how to shave seconds off the clock.

All around, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a game of the year contender they did it!

Eat the Music

In ??an odd but fun little headline, beloved bottomless pit Kirby has bagged himself an official Grammy Award, becoming the first Nintendo character to do so. The pink puf?fball picked up the gong at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, which was held Sunday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Strictly speaking, the award was won by the talented duo of Charlie Rosen and Jake Silverman, who were nominated in the "Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella" category. The winning tune was the big band composition of the Jun Ishikawa theme "Meta Knight's Revenge," which appears in the 1996 SNES release Kirby Super Star.

You can check out the winning track, as performed by The 8-bit Big Band, below. PARP!

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=E-gTlQn8wec

Rosen and Silverman, who are well-known for the jazz and big band covers of famous video game themes, were understandably over-the-moon with the Grammy win, failing ?to hide their excitement i??n an announcement on social media.

"HOLY SHIT WE WON THE GRAMMY!! LONG LIVE VIDEO GAME MUSIC!!" wrote the duo on Twitter. "Thanks to everybody who’s ever listened to [the8bitbigband], ALL of (the) artists who have contributed their time/talent and of course?? HUGE thanks to my co-arranger the one and only Button_Masher!! MUCH LOVE!"

The 8-bit Band rendition of "Meta Knight's Revenge" is only the second piece of video game music to win a Grammy Award. Back in 2010, composer Christopher Tin won "Best Instrumental Arrangement with Vocalist" for the track "Baba Yetu," which appeared in strategy epic Civilization 4. A few years later, Journey composer Austin Wintory was nominated in ??the "Best Score Soundtrack for Visua??l Media"  category, a surely deserving nomination that unfortunately failed to score the win.

I guess the only question that remains is who truly won the Grammy, Kirby or Meta Knight?

Maybe we have the dramatic crux of the next Kirby release lyin??g right underneath our noses.

Biggest series launch in Japan and UK

Nintendo's latest smash release, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, is continuing to break records around the globe, such is the international love for the bemused blob. In new data reported by Famitsu, the 3D Switch release sold 380,000 physical copies in Japan since launch, already making it the biggest launch for a Kirby title within the territory.

In Japan, Kirby and the Forgotten Land is already 2022's second-biggest selling video game to date. As noted on Twitter by Game Data Library, the new game's sales numbers now surpass even those of FromSoftware's blockbuster fantasy adventure Elden Ring. Only Nintendo's own Pokemon Legends: Arceus stands in Kirby's way, so the period piece release better watch its ba??ck lest it gets gobbled up!

//twitter.com/GameDataLibra??ry/status/15095330779235?81952?s=20&t=CdipwVCLNiB_IK7I2RvfaQ

These latest accolades sit alongside the recent news that Forgotten Land is the UK's biggest-launching Kirby title, with the pink puffball usurping Rockstar's unwavering crime sim Grand Theft Auto V from the top of the charts. It's a mighty feat not only given the single-format nature of Forgotten Land, but also the increasing push away from physical game sale??s on the Switch platform. It will be?? interesting to see if Kirby can hold on to the top spot of the UK charts for a second week running.

Pink puffball floats to the top of the UK Charts

The smash-hit Switch release Kirby and the Forgotten Land has been a clear hit for Nintendo, having raked in praise from critics and fans ever since its launch late last week In fact, the cuddly hero has debuted in the UK Charts' number-one spot, immediately becoming the most successful launch in franchise history, reports GamesIndustry.biz.

While Kirby and pals have poured themselves onto UK shores since the late 1980s, the pink puffball's latest endeavor is the first title to reach number one. In terms of initial sales, Kirby and Forgotten Land has already sold 2.5 times that of its closest series rival, 2018's Kirby Star Allies. Lest we forget, Nin??tendo keeps tight-lipped on digital sales, so it's very like?ly that the number of total sales is far greater.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oTBOQ5rp58

Kirby and the Forgotten Land fought off competition from 2K Games' shooter Tiny Tina's Wonderlands to claim the number-one spot with its UK launch, usurping perennial favorite Grand Theft Auto V and the still mega-selling fantasy adventure, Elden Ring. Even if physical sales drop off?? in the coming days and weeks, it seems that Kirby's newest titl??e is easily on track to become the best-selling Kirby game of all time.

Some would say this magnificent feat has been achieved thanks to the series' experimental transition to 3D environments. And some would tell you that the world has been thirsting for another Nintendo Switch AAA release. And some would, quite simply, point the finger at the game's delightful, colorful visuals, dynamic gameplay, cute characters, and overall sense of ?fun and silliness...

...But, let's face it,? it's all because of that car, isn't it?

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is available now exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

Get an early start on Star Coins and Rare Stones

Pretty early into Kirby and the Forgotten Land, you'll rescue enough Waddle Dees to unlock a password exchange building called Waddle Dee-liveries. (This game is too darn adorable.) With the right password, Kirby will get a little present delivered to his home, and there are quite a few codes floating around. It's sort of like the Mystery Gift online feature in the Pokemon series, except you can cash in a bunch of ??stuff right off the ba??????????????????????????t.

As compiled on Reddit, here are Present Codes to get you started:

  • CLEARDEMO â€?Star Coin x300
  • NEWADVENTURE â€?Star Coin x300, Rare Stone
  • MOUTHFULMODE â€?Star Coin x100, Car-Mouth Cake
  • KIRBYMICROSITE â€?Star Coin x150, Attack Boost
  • KIRBYGAMESTOPCAN â€?Star Coin x150, Maxim Tomato
  • BRAWLINGCOLOSSEUM â€?Star Coin x500, Attack Boost
  • FIRSTPASSWORD â€?Star Coin x100
  • KIRBYSTORY â€?Star Coin x300
  • KIRBYTHEGOURMET â€?Rare Stone, Car-Mouth Cake
  • THANKYOUMETAKNIGHT â€?Rare Stone x3
  • KIRBYNEWSDESK â€?Star Coin x150, Energy Drink
  • GAMENEWS â€?Rare Stone
  • THANKYOUKIRBY - Star Coin x1000, Rare Stone
  • ADVENTUREGUIDE â€?Rare Stone
  • KIRBYADVENTURECALI â€?Star Coin x300 and food items x4
  • ICONELEMENTS â€?/em> Star Coin x300, Kirby Burger
  • THIRTIETH â€?Rare Stone x1, Car-Mouth Cake
  • CRYSTALSHARDS â€?Star Coin x150, food items x2, Maxim Tomato
  • NEWWORLD â€?Star Coin x150, Car-Mouth Cake
  • MUSICFEST â€?Star Coin x300, Maxim Tomato

Note: these passwords are case-sensitive, so ??stick with all caps it's easiest to double-tap the shift arrow so that it stays active ??the whole time, and you may also want to type out your codes on the touch screen, if it's more convenient. They're pretty long!

Another heads-up: while passwords can be found in-game, certain Present Codes, including MOUTHFULMODE (April 25) and KIRBYMICROSITE (June 10), will expire.

[caption id="attachment_313783" align="alignnone" width="1280"]Kirby and the Forgotten Land passwords You'll need to unbox and collect a gift before redeeming your next Present Code.[/caption]

Or just collect five presents for the Delivery Waddle Dee figure

You might not need a Rare Stone top-up if you've been diligent about completing the tricky Treasure Road challenges (I love how fierce the target times can be), but the day might come, especially if you like upgrading Kirby's Copy Abilities as soon as possible at the Weapons Shop. I'm a few worlds into Kirby and the Forgotten Land and i??t's my favorite aspect so far. I like how everything keeps tying back into the Waddle Dee Town.

Either way, it's worth inputting five passwords upfront so you can unlock the Delivery Waddle Dee figure for your Vol. 1 collection. Once I started filling out that list, I couldn't stop. My obsession has gotten out of hand. Also, I only just learned that you can store the figures in Kirby's house (by looking at one up close from your collection list and then pressing the + button). I've got watermelon, candy, and a Maxim Tomato above my fireplace. Speaking of which, the moment I tried burning those logs and realized there was a reward for doing it was the moment Kirby and the Forgotten Land truly sold me.

From that point on, I knew I had to look everywhere. Chris tells me it only gets better, so I'm stoked. I forgot what it felt like to be this into a Kirby game. Genuinely.

Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii

I remember the first time I stumbled across the existence of Kirby. It was in a Nintendo Power magazine, promoting the NES game, and I knew I just had to play it. The whimsical designs were so different compared to a lot of other platformers at the time, and once Kirby Super Star rolled around, I became a fan for life. For the most part, Kirby has been good to me throughout its 20 year existence. Kirby and the Forgotten Land keeps that streak going.

Review: Kirby and the Forgotten Land 1

Kirby and the Forgotten Land (Switch)
Developer: HAL Laboratory
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: March 25, 2022
MSRP: $59.99

Kirby and the Forgotten Land keeps the same "pick up and play" simplicity of past games in the serie??s, but it also had the added ability to keep s??urprising me.

Forgotten Land's secret ingredient is that it's as relaxed or as involved as you want. Levels have hidden tasks to do so you can rescue all of the Waddle Dees (the main "collectible") in any given zone, but you don't need to do them. Worlds provide ample challenge rooms that task you with mastering individual forms (both of the copy ability and Mouthful variety), but they're optional. Going har?d on the former will open up more of the hub village (which includes shops, minigames, and such), and the latter will provide more copy ability evolutions, which level-up and alter Kirby's powers.

It's a loop I can really sink my teeth into, and adapt to. If there's a particular level I really dug, I was happy to go back and comb over every nook and cranny. If there was a location I didn't feel the need to do again immediately, I'd move on, and feel like I missed nothing. The pacing is absolutely mesmerizing, and when you add in the ability to do drop-in/drop-out co-op at any time, Kirby's your uncle.

While scurrying around the map you'll take on core levels and optional challenges, culminating in a boss fight that unlocks the next world. The formula is straight-forward, but there's a lot of layers involved at each step. That said, I’ve always appreciated the simplicity of a level based map. Galaxy 2 did this wonderfully and Kirby traditionally does t??oo, so I'm glad they kept it.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oTBOQ5rp58

The secret Waddle Dees are where things start to get more complicated. During the course?? of a level you'll typically see "???" prompts showing you that some of them are available to find, and only when you actually uncover them or finish a level will those question mark prompts reveal themselves, or provide a hint, respectively. It's a chill vibe that encourages you to seek out the road less traveled, but doesn't force you to tediously run down every path if you don't want to.

Some of them are skill-based (like "don't drive off the edge during this portion of the level where you're controlling a car"), some of them are seek and finds ("eat three snacks off tree stumps"), and others are straight-up "find this hidden area." Many of them are so well hidden you'll miss them the first run through, and I love the idea of people potentially using a guide for a Kirby game.

Hidden Waddle Dee challenges even apply to boss battles, including a time trial "finish the boss before this time" requirement, or "kill the boss with [x] copy ability." It drives the replay value up and compliments the hassle-free gameplay. These quests/missions for each stage add some depth to the otherwise straight forward foundation of the Kirby formula.

Those challenge rooms I was talking about earlier are actually called "Treasure Road Challenges," and they're timed courses centered around one power: they remind me of the Mario Sunshine FLUDD-less levels, but less intense. Because they're timed you can try and get the best possible score, and although t??here isn't much pressure to actually clear them, the "recommended" par times for b?ragging rights can get pretty tight.

Review: Kirby and the Forgotten Land 3

The Waddle Dee Town hub is a lot more fun than I expected, and I found myself going back every few levels or so just to check it out. You can dine at the local cafe (and do a Diner Dash-esque minigame with three difficulty levels and co-op support), go watch movies in a to??wn theater, buy items to take with you at a store, challenge the colosseum, fish, collect gacha (the other main collectible)??, upgrade your copy abilities, and a few other surprises.

It feels like everything funnels into one clear path of progression, since levels innately reward Waddle ??Dees and provide you with a little extra oomph for unlocks without even trying to laboriously finish every secret challenge. Upgrading? (evolving) abilities is another huge hook. Initially I skipped over a lot of challenges, but around the second world or so I after I had started acquiring "blueprints" to unlock more copy alterations I got addicted and cleared all of the Treasure Road levels out.

Copy ability evolutions are incredibly fun to experiment with, and you can even set a "default" option for them when swallowing up enemies. In other words you don't need to worr?y about needing to find "Blade Knight B" enemies to use the second evolution of the Blade Knight: you can just swap to it in the hub town, go into a level with it, and get it back every time you swallow any form of the Blade Knight. By the game's end I had a wide array of evolution defaults that I mixed and matched.

The base copy abilities feel great mechanically, and so does the new "Mouthful Mode," which basically amounts to Kirby choking on a car or vending machine temporarily without being able to swallow it to use it as a temporary means of travel or attack. The car is self-explanatory, as Kirby can drive around in the specific portions of the game that Kirby and the Forgotten Land lets you use Mouthful Mode, but other ?objects let him spew projectiles that can open up walls, glide, or fit in tight spaces.

Review: Kirby and the Forgotten Land 4

I found that at its absolute worst, it never got in the way; especially since you can use Mouthful mode and keep your original copy ability (a good quality of life choice that makes it a lot less annoying). In all it reminded me of when Yoshi would occasionalyl morph into a vehicle in Yoshi's Island or I'd pilot animal friends in Donkey Kong Country. Often times, especially in the mid-to-late game, it would lea??d to a few interesting level designs.

Again, the entire game can be played in co-op after the short tutorial, and I played roughly 50% of the game with a Waddle Dee by my side (which has a limited moveset and can't use copy abilities). It's convenient, ??optional, and if the second player dies, their life bar slowly refills and they respawn: easy. It's a perfect way to involve a family member whenever they feel like joining you, but I can't help but wish that co-op had a meatier presence. It would have been even better if there was a character select option that highlighted different playstyles, as the person controlling Kirby is constantly swapping around and doing drastically new things multiple times per level.

If you try and do everything: as in finish all the evolutions, get every gacha toy, and save every Waddle Dee, it could take up a good chunk of time. Again, it's old school in that there's a lot of stuff to do in the base game, b?ut it has a new school approach of not gating a lot of it off. Sometimes HAL and Nintendo really show up a lot of the competition with a retro mindset.

I'm an easy sell when it comes to Kirby, but Forgotten Land is easily one of my favorite entries in the series, and possibly my top game outside of Kirby Super Star (an all-time classic). I came in expecting a very serviceable Kirby adventure and got a lot more, but with those same st?raightforward and effortless virtues that past games have commanded.

Kirby-themed concert incoming

Kirby is one of the most beloved video game mascots out there, and for good reason he's adorable and round, his games are fun, suction-filled romps, and his music always goes hard. That's why, to celebrate the little pink blob's 30th anniversary, Nintendo is putting on an official concert later this summer.

The event will feature a "large big band-style ensemble of 35 musicians performing in a variety of genres," as well as an LED screen with a giant moving Kirby. The concert kicks off on August 11, 2022 at 18:00 (JST) at the Tokyo Garden Theater, but don't worry, it will also be streaming?? live to Kirby's official YouTube channel free of cost. It's certainly one of those events we wish we could see in person, so it's nice that they thought to open it up to those who won't be able to make it.

//twitter.com/NintendoAmerica/status/150343831?7349654530?t=6LJDPjDPSibzXWiYrkZ7Zg&s=19

The 30th anniversary is officially on April 27, which was the Japanese release date of Kirby's Dream Land back in 1992. We're anticipating that the concert will also feature music from the newest mainline game, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, whose re??lease date is quickly approaching o??n March 25.

30 years is a staggeringly long time for a series to be around by video game standards, and it's not even Nintendo's oldest franchise by a long shot. Kirby is younger than Donkey Kong, Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and Fire Emblem, to name a few other properties that are still hanging in there after all these years.

Kirby's music has already been making headlines recently, as a big band arrangement of "Meta Knight's Revenge" from Kirby Super Star by The 8-bit Big Band was nominated for a Grammy Award last year. Tunes have become one of the most iconic parts of the Kirby brand, especially after the theme song from Kirby's Dream Land became a meme in recent years. Personally, I can't think of ?a better way to honor our favorite circular video game protagonist.

Waddle dee is the latest

If you're keen on some Kirby amiibo restocks just in time for The Forgotten Land, Amazon h?as been getting some lately in waves, s??eemingly without warning.

Those Kirby amiibo restocks include the Smash edition of King Dedede, the blue base Kirby figure (on a star), blue base Meta Knight, and Waddle Dee. While several of those are out of stock or are now above MSRP, Waddle Dee is currently available with Japanese packaging. All of these are being recirculated as a result of recent CPSIA certificates, and extend to five total amiibo reprints (the aforementioned four, and Byleth). It's possible more will shuffle in, so keep an eye o??ut and set up some alerts.

Keep in mind that this PSA mostly impacts collectors, as the amiibo gameplay functionality as it relates to The Forgotten Land is very minimal. As we discussed in our preview writeup, tapping amiibo to the NFC point will grant you bonus item?s, which you can otherwise find in-game. You can tap five figures per level, and you can't repeat the same figure until you've finished a stage.

So you can skip them! But if you don't own many amiibo yet, grabbing a Waddle Dee fo??r under MSRP at the moment isn't a bad deal, as long as your expectations are in check.

2022 confirmed Kirby amiibo reprints (and others) so far:

  • Kirby (Kirby line)
  • Meta Knight (Kirby line)
  • King Dedede (Smash line)
  • Byleth (Smash line)

It's just coins and power-ups

Itching to see how Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo functionality is handled?

Well if you were worried that it would gate off some content or be crucial in some form, you can rest easy. It's just as we expected based on the info from the official Japanese site.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo 1

The gist is that they are entirely used for menial power-up bonuses.

You can scan amiibo immediately after starting the game, ev??en in the tutorial area. All you need to do is press the "+" [start] button, then select "amiibo" ?from the menu. That pause menu can be seen above.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo 2

After selecting the amiibo option, the above screen will pop up, and it ?will ask for a confirmation prompt.

You just press the amiibo against the scan/NFC point and it??ems will pop out around Kirby.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo 3

I test??ed all of the "supported" amiibo and some random ones.

Without further ado, here is how Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo tapping worked out, on a figure by figure basis:

  • Rosalina (as a test) - Dropped coins and fruit in an area around Kirby, that you can immediately pick up off the ground
  • Meta Knight Smash line - Coins and a speed boost power-up
  • Meta Knight Kirby line (blue base) - Same thing as the Meta Knight Smash amiibo
  • Kirby Smash line - Coins and a life up power-up
  • Kirby blue base - Same thing as the Kirby Smash amiibo
  • King Dedede Smash - Coins and an attack boost power-up
  • Dedede Kirby line - Same thing as the Dedede Smash amiibo
  • Waddle Dee - Coins and health potion
  • Qbby - Coins and fruit

Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo 3

A few notes:

As you can see, it's a lot like how amiibo chest drops were handled in Zelda: Breath of the Wild, but with even less intensity.

There's also a temporary limit to the madness. If you try and use an amiibo twice in a row (or multiple times in the same level), the game will tell you that you need to clear a stage before you use it again. If you ??use ??five amiibo in succession, the game will also tell you that you need to clear a stage before you can use more

And that's pretty much it. If you have some figures lying around, have at it! If you don't, no ?worrie?s.

It's three levels long

"A Kirby and the Forgotten Land demo is coming to the eShop today" is just the phrase I needed to hear right now. And having played a bit of the game so fa??r, I'm happy with how it's turning out.

You'll get to see the very light and lightning-quick setup of Kirby getting whisked away to the titular Forgotten Land after being sucked into a ?black hole on his homeworld of Planet Popstar: then it's off to ?the races. Upon booting up the three-level demo (full stages with secrets in tow, and a boss fight), you're greeted with a prompt: wild mode (normal difficulty), or spring breeze mode (you get more heath, and according to a Nintendo spokesperson, you can "play through the game at your leisure").

The demo showcases Kirby and a Bandana Waddle Dee (with the classic spear), who can cooperate via two-player local co-op (Player 1 is always Kirby, and Player 2 is always Bandana Waddle Dee). While co-op technically opens up after the 10-ish minute tutorial in the core game, in the demo, you can play it immediately as Kirby enters the extremely Crash Bandicoot 1-esque beach intro zone. A N?intendo spokesperson stresses that co-op is l??ocal only, in case you were wondering.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land demo 12

As far as copy abilities go, the demo gives us tried and true access to powers like sword, cutter, ice, and bomb. Bandana Waddle Dee doesn't use copy abilities, and adopts mo??re of a sidekick format. It wields a spear which it can use to poke people, or fly around with a helicopter move that rains spears below it. If it dies, it comes back after a timer (which doubles as its health bar) ticks up. Just like classic Kirby games you can "share" health via bumping up against one another and high-fiving.

Kirby is the real star here of cour?se. There's a full dodge suite that players can utilize to accommodate the 3D shift, but HAL has done a fantastic job at not breaking too far from [good] tradition. There's classic boss battles where the game lets you choo??se between two copy abilities, but this time instead of shifting into a locked 2D screen, it cordons off the arena. Later on in the game, copy abilities can be evolved through the main Waddle Dee town hub (mouthful mode doesn't have the same evolution track): something I'm really eager to find out more on.

Mouthful mode, one of the main gimmicks that lets Kirby eat huge objects that take up his entire body, starts early. Yo??u have a car that can dash to get around and discover secrets through slamming into walls, and co-op makes this whole mechanic even better; as Waddle Dee rides on the back and throws spears. Sometimes mouthful mode is a formality, like eating a dome and ripping it off of a structure to uncover a secret. When Kirby drops mouthful mode (in this case, a car), the object po??ps out, and you don't lose your copy abilities when eating things: thank goodness.

The second level of the Kirby and the Forgotten Land demo opens up and starts to show people the main gameplay loop. You have five different objectives. There's a core goal of finishing a level, which saves three captured Waddle Dees. Then you have secret one??s that aren't revealed on the first run, of the "break this pipe" variety. It's a clever way to implement some form of replay value in each stage without getting too collectathon-ey. A few examples in the demo involved seeking out mouthful mode abilities to break open walls and unlock optional new areas.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=_B-qk4_V2jY

As a note, the demo grants "present codes" that you can use in the full version to connect online and get a few innocuous items from (think mystery gifts in Pokemon). A Nintendo spokesperson clarified that you don't need a Switch Online membership to use this feature, but you will need one in the final version to access Forgotten Land's leaderboards.

The final part of the demo showcases boss battles, which, when cleared in the full game, open new chapters. The Gorimondo gorilla boss takes place in a bigger arena, and you're constantly able to attack it and whittle down its huge health bar. It's here that you get to see the nuance of the copy abilities, as ice freeze bosses with a visual effect that impacts gameplay. Bosses also have phases, where they do an animation and gain an extra ability. I can see this getting repetitive over time, but the bosses themselves are fun, unique looking, and well animated. In true Nintendo fashion, it has that first-party polish and puts some other titles on the platform to shame. Forgotten Land sports bold and crisp colors, and the close-ups are detailed. There's still a lot of personality pres??ent with Kirby and this is definitely another example of that.

I'm not surprised that it's turning out well so far, because it's really hard to mess up a Kirby game. Stay tuned for our coverage in the future beyond the Kirby and the Forgotten Land demo.

I hear a resounding 'good' from many of you!

In case you were wondering what Kirby and the Forgotten Land amiibo functionality would entail, we now hav?e details from the offi??cial Japanese site. And like most modern amiibo features, it's kept to a? minimum?.

Here's the very quick sentence blurb: "With every amiibo, you can get items that are useful for your adventure." That seems to be it! We have the typical "tap the figure and get a quick power-up you can normally get in-game" formula that Metroid Dread most recently used.

And here's the full Forgotten Land amiibo functionality list so far (and possibly the complete list):

  • Kirby (Smash)
  • Kirby (Kirby series)
  • King Dedede (Smash)
  • King Dedede (Kirby series)
  • Meta Knight (Smash)
  • Meta Knight (Kirby series)
  • Waddle Dee
  • Qbby

So that's eight amiibo in all, and five unique characters (Kirby, Dedede, Meta Knight, Waddle Dee, and Qbby). As a reminder, some of these are getting reprints ahead of the March worldwide launch of Forgotten Land. A few of them, Qbyy included, are not. So why Qbby? Well, it's probably included as an Easter egg given that HAL Laboratory produced the BoxBoy series.

If you were hoping for more Forgotten Land amiibo functionality, you're out of luck. But I have a feeling most people are over amiibo in general these days, so not linking a crucial feature or mode to them is probably a good idea not just now, but going forward.

Nintendo kicks off the year with some big surprises

Today's Nintendo Direct has concluded, and dang, that was a pretty good Direct. From known upcoming games to comp?lete left-field reveals, it felt like it flew by at a blistering ??pace.

The company has become quite good at pulling a few surprises out for every stream, but usually a few items leak out ahead of time. There were certainly rumors around this one, same as any other, but the lineup is honestly still baffling to look at. Live A Live, Chrono Cross, Front Mission; heck, even a Wii Sports follow-up! And some of the best meme fuel in town thanks to Kirb??y's new Mouth?ful Mode.

With all that in mind, let's run down the quick list of? what got shown today.

Nintendo Direct February 2022 news recap

  • Fire Emblem Warriors is back, and with a Three Houses setting in a new version called Three Hopes. It arrives on June 24, 2022.
  • If you wanted more tactics than Warriors, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp arrives on April 8, 2022.
  • The infinite void of No Man's Sky comes to Nintendo Switch this summer.
  • Soccer is back in style for Mario sports spin-offs when Mario Strikers: Battle League hits the net on June 10.
  • No firm date yet for Splatoon 3, but we did get a Summer 2022 window alongside a new trailer for this game's take on the co-op Salmon Run mode.
  • The first two Front Mission games are getting remade. Giant robots? Tactics? I'm in. The first one's out this summer.
  • Disney Speedstorm arrives this summer for Nintendo Switch, putting beloved Disney characters behind the wheel of their very own karts. Surely no other kart racer will show up in this Direct to steal Elsa's thunder.
  • A few ports are in store: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is coming to Nintendo Switch on April 20,  Assassin's Creed: The Ezio Collection hits the Switch on Feb. 17, and mobile suits roll out when SD Gundam Battle Alliance hits Switch later this year.
  • Chrono Cross is alive and well in 2022, and it's coming to the Nintendo Switch on April 7.

  • MLB The Show cover star Shohei Ohtani showed up to spotlight this year's iteration, which is coming to the Switch.
  • A few game collections are on the way. We already knew about Kingdom Hearts, but Klonoa and Portal are also getting Switch collections.
  • Live A Live is finally coming to North America on July 22. Seriously, I'm still shocked this is happening.
  • Wii Sports is back to break more televisions with Nintendo Switch Sports on April 29. There are even some more sports packed in with this version, like Soccer and Badminton.

  • Metroid Dread is getting two new difficulty modes, Dread and Rookie, later today. A Boss Rush mode is coming April.

  • Finally, Nintendo closed the show with the reveal of Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

There was nothing new on Breath of the Wild 2, but overall, it was ??a pretty exciting Nintendo Direct. Let us know what you t?hought below!

A new adventure through some mysterious ruins

After its leak earlier today, the new Kirby game from HAL has been officially revealed. Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a 3D adventure coming to the Nintendo Switch in spring 2022.

Shown off during today's Nintendo Direct, Kirby's latest adventure is in full 3D, with the pink puffball r??oaming around a seemingly ruined world. Of course, Kirby is still doing Kirby things—sucking up enemies, absorbing powers like "Ice" and "Sword," and being an adorable and powerful ancient being.

The existence of this Kirby game leaked out earlier this morning on Nintendo's site, albeit under a different moniker. Whi??le we d??on't know much more for now, this definitely looks like a cool step forward for Kirby, and I'm definitely digging the post-apocalyptic look.

Officially, lore-wise, this is a "mysterious world with abandoned structures from a past civilization—like a shopping mall," and that raises all sorts of questions. But if Kirby can survive the cataclysmic events of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, he can cut it here too.

We'll see what Kirby has in store as Nintendo puts more info out about Kirby and the Forgotten Land. 2022?? is shaping up to be quite a year for vid?eo games.
