In a blink or you'll miss it moment ??at the end of?? the January 2024 PlayStation State of Play stream, Hideo Kojima confirmed that he was working on a new "stealth espionage" game, due after Death Stranding 2. I know!

All the Physint details we can muster

Sony isolated the announcement with the brief view below from their YouTube channel, and most of it just involves talking about the reveal.

We did get a bit of PR that we can glean some additional information from, even though it's slim pickings. Kojima Productions has announced that the project will be "in partnership" with Sony Interactive Entertainment, and that "preparations are underway" for its development, which will "begin in earnest after Death Stranding 2."

Curiously, Kojima specifically notes that he has been collaborating with Sony for some time (dating back to the Metal Gear Solid/PS1 era) and that Sony "also produce[s] music and films, and this will definitely be a strong collaboration." Kojima boasts that? this project will use "cutting-edge technology" and will sport a "stellar cast." He mentions that this title will be the "culmination of his work" (nothing to read into from that phrase!), and calls it "an interactive game, but...also a movie at the same time."

The video then zooms out to show an aerial view of Columbia Pictures studios, with the Physint logo emblazoned on the marquee sign. Sony seems to be sinking a lot of cash into this production, which is insane given that Death Stranding 2 already looks like a marvel based on an early trailer. ??Expect lots of Hollywood shine, from audio to video quality.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=WEpK67JDLu8

Is Kojima just going to make a Konami-free Metal Gear Solid?

So with al??l of the major motion picture hubbub and the Columbia Pict??ures tease, it's obvious that Kojima will continue to hire Hollywood actors for this next project. The real question is: Does he just convince Kurt Russel to finally come aboard and make the true-to-life inspiration for Solid Snake?

We likely won't hear more about this project until after Death Stranding sh?ips (in 2025!), but for n?ow, Kojima is up to his old tricks, building hype.

After hoping for a release toward the end of 2023, we now know when the Death Stranding Director's Cut will be landing on iOS and Mac de?vices. 505 Games, the team handling the port, has confirmed the title will be delivered next week.

The release will make the definitive version of Hideo Kojima's 2019 hit available to a substantial new audience. It's playable for everyone with an iPhone 15 Pro or iPads and Macs with the M-series chip. It will b??e available for download via the Apple App Store on January 30.

The Director's Cut was initially released for PlayStation 5 in September 2021. It was then followed with a PC iteration in March 2022. Within it comes the base game, as well as a new underground factory location, expanded?? story missions, and various delivery assists to make navigating terrain a bit easier.

505 Games is publishing the port. The Death Stranding Director's Cut is being listed on the App Store for $39.99. However, those who preorder ahead of the January 30 launch can enjoy a nice 50% discount on their purchase. It's the first of potentially many future titles that Kojima has committed to bring to Apple's platfor?ms.

Players who own multiple newer Apple products should be aware that the game incorporates Apple's Special Delivery feature. This enables those with Mac and iOS devices to purchase the Director's Cut once and have it playable across all platforms. Though the studio remains forever secretive, Kojima Productions has been gracious enough to provide fans a sneak peek into two upcoming projects: the Death Stranding sequel and OD. On Twitter, Hideo Kojima recently gave an update on Death Stranding 2's development.

He explains that 2024 entails another year of development for the game which is being produced at the same time as OD. Death Stranding 2 still "has some ADR left" and after that, the studio will focus on doing Japanese voice-overs. There's still no official release date for Death Stranding 2, but with Kojima discussing "another ye?ar of development," a 2025 launch wouldn't be out of the question.

A busy year for Kojima Productions

During The Game Awards 2023, Kojima spoke a bit about OD which is described as a title that will defy exp?ectations and expand the medium. He's enlisted the help of movie-maker Jordan Peele, and we've received a cryptic teaser trailer, though we're still stuck without a release ?date.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yi-5xTlWiiM

Although Kojima intends to limit his business trips this year, he's still busy turning Death Stranding into a movie, collaborating on the Avengers, and working on OD in addition to other video projects. He also mentions a writing project along with the possible reviva??l of Hide Radio and "a special program on 'HideTube'."

//twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1741588777410375912

It appears it's a busy year ahead for Kojima Productions, but we may see the fruits of the studio's labor soon. Plenty of the upcoming projects intrigue me, but I'm particularly interested to see how Death Stranding's movie adaptation will be handled. Although the game is teeming with lengthy cutscenes, it'll be a tall task to capture the unique atmospher??e established by the gameplay.

Follo?wing his departure from Konami, Hideo Kojima launched an independent career. It seems ?to have been a smart choice though, as he recently revealed, it wasn't easy to convince others that it was possible.

According to his recent Tweet, his peers, colleagues, and relatives expressed doubts concerning his plan to go independent. It appear??s that it wasn't that they had no faith in his abilities. Instead, it was because they held the belief that it "was impossible without the financial and organizational strength of a company." Despite this, Kojima proved that it is "an old-fashioned way of thinking."

//twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1736154?165292990910

It should be noted that Kojima wasn't facing unanimous discouragement, and there were a few who believed in his ideas. As he explained in a 2019 interview with Time Magazine, following his departure from Konami, he felt alone. However, these feelings were dispelled when he realized he had built relationships with other creatives like Guillermo Del Toro and F. Paul Wilson. Consequently, he knew that he wasn't alone. This experience would go on to influence Death Stranding.

Kojima has no plans to retire

In the same Tweet, Kojima declares, as he had in the past, that he has no plans to retire because for him "crea?ting is living." This year, he had expressed this idea on his birthday which falls on August 24. In his Tweet, he declares: there is no retirement age o?r retirement in my way of life."

//twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1694665273981460991?lang=en

He is certainly proving his claims, as he has a game called OD on the way. It is being made with Jordan Peele, and while not much is known about the project at present, the official announcement on the Kojima Productions site reveals that Xbox's cloud gaming ??technology is being leveraged to create not just a new game, ??but rather "a new form of media."

It's quite fortunate ??for his fans that Kojima has no retirement plans, as it means we'll be getting more eccentric experiences for a whi?le.

There aren't many video game developers who are as popular as Hideo Kojima. He left an indelible mark on the gaming world through the Metal Gear franchise, then managed to reboot his career following his departure from Konami. A new studio, Kojima Productions, was formed, and its first game, Death Stranding, was released in 2019. The studio's mascot is Ludens, and he wears a spacesuit, making him look ready for?? any adventure.

//twitter.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1701086304359031103

Recently, a fan took inspiration from Ludens and created a ha??ndmade ring for Kojima. The ring, which Kojima show??ed off on Twitter, features the Ludens helmet, and the words "60th anniversary" are engraved, likely a reference to Kojima turning 60 this year. The eccentric game creator expressed great gratitude for the beautiful ring.

The significance of Kojima Productions' Ludens mascot

Ludens is the Latin word for play, and it beautifully captures Kojima's driving philosophy. The mascot's name is a reference to the 1938 text by Johan Huizinga titled Homo Ludens. The text theorizes that it wo??uld be more accurate to characterize humans as a species of play, as play and imagination form integral parts of human societies and culture.

The concept weaves its way into Death Stranding, as seen with the Ludens sungla??sses players receive early on. It features the following relevant description: "Sunglasses designed with 'Homo ludens' in mind, their form encourages the wearer to never forget their playful side".

//twitter.com/Kojima_Hideo/status/1701103983409102885

Despite turning 60, Kojima has certainly not forgotten his playful side, as he recently posted a picture of himself holding a Concorde Lego set. He's also shown his love for Starfield, suggesting he's been quite star-bound lately.

What accomplishment doesn't he want to achieve?

Being one of the most recognizable faces in all of game development, Hideo Kojima is known for his outlandish ideas. While he rose to fame with the Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid franchises, his legacy continued with 2019's Death Stranding, a game synonymous with surrealism.

Now, the man himself has shown an interest in literally reaching for the stars. In a recent YouTube video, Hideo Kojima was asked by Geoff Keighley about achievements he still has in mind as he approaches 60. Speaking through an interpreter, the dir?ector said that he wants to go into outer space. The comment inspires some laughter from the audience. Kojima then goes on to say that he wants to make a game in space that the player can play while also floating about in the cosmos.

To hear the quote, skip ahead to around 23:19.

//youtu.be/fAAbAAqHEic?t=1299

Anybody who knows the man and his work can say for certain that this is probably not a surprising dream. If you're a fan of his games, you may describe him as a "visionary." He's not always appreciated, but he definitely leaves an impact. Of course, seeing as Hideo Kojima likes to tease, it's entirely possible that this ?comment about going into space is a bit of a joke on his part.

Still, it's interesting to imagine what a game in space would be like, and if anyone's going to do it, it may as well be Kojima. However, we seem to be some way off before we regular folk can take trips to the stars. A video game that's been developed and is playable o?ff-planet sounds kooky in a way that a?? lot of Kojima's ideas sound kooky. But, at the risk of bursting any bubbles, the prospect of such a game would probably be only suitable for the ultrarich. So Bezos could play it, but not you and I.

Besides, Kojima still needs to finish Death Stranding 2, not to mention that Xbox game he's said to be working on.

Future Kojima Productions titles to hit the platform too

Today was the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference and while I’m disappointed I’m going to have to wait even longer for an M1-powered iPad Mini, there was a lot to be excited about if you’re a Mac gamer. For anyone who’s been using a Mac as long as I have (20+ years), we know that Apple and gaming haven’t always synced up as?? well as they s??hould have. Sure, games are a cash machine on the iPhone/iPad, but when it comes to playing the biggest PC and console games, the Mac has often felt like an afterthought. With today’s presentation, it looks like Apple is making a good effort to change that with Game Mode and the reveal of Death Stranding Director’s Cut for Mac computers.

Game Mode is part of the upcoming macOS Sonoma operating system. The idea behind the feature is it will automatically give games the top priority of CPU and GPU to improve the gaming experience and reduce latency. The new macOS will also include features for game developers, including Metal tools for Windows, which will help developers port their high-end games from PC to Mac. Some of the games that popped up in the presentation include Resident Evil Village, Layers of Fear, and Stray. Oh, and Kojima dropped by to announce Death Stranding Director’s Cut is coming to Mac computers.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=rc46cO3spSE

It’s always fun to see Kojima pop up in places where you don’t expect him to be. I certainly didn’t have him showing his face here on my bingo card, but it is nice to know Kojima Productions is planning to bring future titles to the macOS platform in addition to Death Stranding.

Between this and Apple’s continued suppo??rt of the Apple Arcade subscription service, it’s clear the company has turned a corner on gaming. Maybe it’s all that money it’s made from other people’s games on the App Store or the fact that the MacBook Air is, according to Apple, the world’s best-selling laptop, but as a lifelong user of the platform, I'm happy developers might be taking it seriously again. I don’t know if it’ll last, but I would love to get rid of my Windows laptop that I only keep around for the occa??sional Steam game.

Althoug??h, I guess I could do that now and just bu??y a Steam Deck.

Kojima is partnering with Hammerstone Studios for a strand adaptation

The strand genre is moving to the silver screen. Kojima Productions is teaming up with Hammerstone Studios to produce a film adaptation of Death Stranding.

Hideo Kojima will produce alongside Hammerstone Studios' Alex Lebovici, who executive produced this year's surprise horror hit Barbarian. The film is being fully financed by Hammerstone (per Variety), with Kojima Productions US and All??an Ungar as executive?? producers.

The plot, according to Variety, is being kept ??under wraps, though the outlet's heard that it will introduce new elements and characters. No writer or director is publicly locked in yet.

"We are thrilled and honored to ?have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation," said Lebovici. "Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic 'Hideo Kojima' production."

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=tCI396HyhbQ

An interesting twist to a Death Stranding film adaptation is the source material itself. Kojima Productions' 2019 game has a lot of stars in it. Norman Reedus plays the lead role of Sam "Porter" Bridges, Léa Seydoux plays Fragile, and Mads Mikkelsen plays a certain antagonistic force as well. Additionally, several side roles feature stars like Margaret Qualley, or Heartman's likeness Nicolas Winding Refn. Whether or not any of those?? actors return for their roles in this version is up in the air.

A new strand

Alongside the film adaptation in the works, Kojima has also confirmed his studio is working on the sequel to 2019's game, Death Stranding 2. The Game Awards 2022 reveal s??hows actors like Reedus and Seydoux returning for the follow-up, as well as som??e big ships and a creepy new character.

This also adds Death Stranding to the growing pile of adaptations in the works. We just got confirmation that Amazon's God of War series is moving forward, and elsewhere, Netflix is working on a Horizon Zero Dawn adaptation and HBO's The Last of Us is set to premiere in January.

BB has come to

Another strand game is finally on the way. Kojima Productions officially unveiled Death Stranding 2 at The Game Awards 2022 tonight.

Studio head Hideo Kojima took to the stage tonight to introduce the project, a sequel to 2019's Death Stranding. The trailer featured several famil?iar faces, including Norman Reedus as Sam Bridges and Léa Seydoux as Fragile.

As for what's happening in the trailer? I couldn't tell you if I tried. But really, that's the appeal of Death Stranding to begin with, and Death Stranding 2 is c??arrying on the bizarre, vague trailer ??tradition.

Not many more details have been revealed just yet. As is the case with a Kojima trailer, I'm sure eagle-eyed viewers will pick the video apart for hints and clues about what's going on, and what's transpired in the dystopian American future of Death Stranding leading into Death Stranding 2.

Lea upon layer

Kojima Productions has dropped another character teaser for its unannounced new project, ahead of whispers that tonight's Game Awards will ?offer up a full reveal of the next title coming out of the esoteric d?eveloper.

Much like its previous teasers, the new image depicts the shadowed face of one of the game's cast, emblazoned with a simple question "How Come?". The mysterious image follows on from the previous reveals of actors Elle Fanning (The Neon Demon, Maleficent) and Shiloli Kutsuna (Deadpool 2). While the identity of the new face is yet to be confirmed, fans are strongly convinced that it is that of Lea Seydoux, (No Time to Die, The French Dispatch) who has previously portrayed "Fragile" in Kojima Productions' Death Stranding.

Does this latest teaser confirm that the new Kojima title is a Death Stranding sequel? Ehh... Hardly. I know we live in an era where people seem to recognize Characters and not Actors, but it's just as likely that, if it is indeed Seydoux, Hideo Kojima simply wished to work alongside her again. Either way, it probably won't be too much longer before we hear a little more about the project, as Kojima himself has been seen in Los ??Angeles, all but confirming the scampster's appearance at The Game Awards.

You can watch along with us tonight right here on Destructoid. The Game Awards 2022 kicks off at 17:00 PST / 20:00 ET / 01:00 BST, and promises an evening of live performances, awards ceremonies, ??and lots, and lots, and lots of advertising.

Alongside the image, Kojima wrote a simple message "Start a new journey", once again shrouding his studio's next game with intrigue and mystery as the Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator is wont to do.

While we still do not have a title for the new game, we do know that it will star Elle Fanning of The Neon Demon and Maleficent fame, as well as Shioli Kutsuna, who eagle-eyed readers might have spotted in Marvel's R-rated movie Deadpool 2. While there is no telling exactly when Kojima will play his hand and offer up more clarity on the new game, it should be noted that The Game Aw??ards will take?? place next week an annual event which Kojima has used frequently as an opportunity to offer updates on his studio's work.

Ain't no time like the present. I'd be ve?ry surprised if we don't hear more info come December 8.

You were expecting somebody else?

Kojima Productions has revealed the identity of the movie star previously teased to appear in the studio's newest mysterious project Elle Fanning, of The Neon Demon and Maleficent fame, will be taking her first steps into Hideo Kojima's strange and esoteric universe in ??the as-yet-unnamed release.

Admittedly, this will not come as much of a shock to anybody, as the initial teaser, which features an extreme close-up of Fanning's head with the features in shadow, was quickly identified as the young starlet, thanks to her distinct ear shape and jawline. Kojima Productions as QR codes posted at PAX Australia were found to link to a new, uncensored version of the same headshot, with some variants replacing the phrase "Who Am I?" with a new question: "Where Am I?"

elle fanning kojima

Fanning will join a list of notable Tinseltown actors who have worked with Kojima Productions on its releases. Most notably, 2019's Death Stranding, which featured appearances from Norman Reedus, Mads Mikkelson, Lea Seydoux, Margaret Qualley, and Lindsey Wagner, among others. There was also a role for film director Nicholas Winding Refn, who coincidentally directed Fanning in the aforementioned psych-horror film, The Neon Demon.

It is very l??ikely that we will hear more about Kojima Productions' new project and the involvement of Elle Fanning at The Game Awards, which is scheduled to take place December 8 at the Microsoft Arena in Los Angeles. I wouldn't start the hype engines just yet, however. Given that this is yer boy Hideo that we're talking about, there is likely to be something of a long haul ahead before the new title is even likely to be viewed in a playable s??tate.

We can see other people

Hideo Kojima, Metal Gear creator and all-around eccentric game-making dude, has offered further clarification on his studio's relationship with industry giants PlayStation and Xbox, following on from his recent announcement that he will be working with the latter on an as-yet-unannounced new g??ame.

Kojima made the initial announcement during Sunday's Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, where the auteur appeared in a pre-recorded v?ideo to reveal that he would be working with Xbox to make a challenging, "never-before-seen" title that will be at the cutting-edge of Xbox technology.

"It's a completely new game that no one has ever experienced o??r seen before," noted Kojima in the video. "I've waited very long for the day when I could finally start to create it."

And that was that. Except it wasn't.

Because The Internet, a small cabal of PlayStation users took Kojima's comments as some kind of bizarre "betrayal" toward them, seeing his new Xbox project as a sign that he had left Sony behind to "chase the money" with some strange non-sentient idealization of a new lover. Many of these infuriated "fans" took to social media to voice their abject rage concern, with one aggrieved party going so far as to found a Change.org petition calli?ng for the cancellation of the new Xbox project.

//twitter.com/Ko??jiPro2015_EN/status/1536227678352973824?s=?20&t=fhnbYKpThJufVOhugCrxdw

Following this online outburst, Kojima Produc??tions took to Twitter yesterday in a bid to allay fears that the studio had become an Xbox-exclusive company.

"After the announcement of our partnership with Microsoft using the cloud technology, many people have asked us about our collaboration with SIE," reads the tweet. "Ple??ase be assured that we continue to have a very good partnership with PlayStation as well."

"As an independent creative studio, #KojimaProductions will continue pursuing work on creations for o?ur fans. We will explore various possibilities with games, movies, and music through platforms that evolve with time and technology. We look forward to your continued support!"

While Kojima has now clearly clarified that he will continue to work with PlayStation and Xbox (as well as any platform he or his studio chooses), it is likely that this still will not be enough for the naysayers. Y'see, for some people, it's not even just about Kojima P?roductions being Xbox-exclusive. It's simply about Kojima Productions collaborating with Xbox period. PlayStation vs. Xbox, WWE vs. AEW, Cat vs. Dog. Online tribalism in action. Come back Team Edward vs. Team Jacob, all is forgiven.

Kojima Productions' Xbox project is in dev??elopment. We will no doubt hear more details later in 2022.

Game-making man making game

During today's Xbox and Bethesda Game St?udios showcase, Hideo Kojima of Kojima Productions mailed in a short vi??deo to announce that he was making a new title in collaboration with Xbox... And that's it.

I guess for many that will be more than enough news, but I can't help but admit it was pretty funny to just see Kojima basically say he was making a game, and then simply bail. No "Overdose" trailer? Nothing at all? I guess not. But, for fans of Kojima Productions, you can at least take heart that yer boy is once again back at the dra??wing board, preparing another undoubtedly odd tale in collaboration with the black and green brand.

We'??ll no doubt be hearing more about the game in the coming months.

The not-so-Nice Guys

In a week expected to be jam-packed with rumors and leaks, the loudest whispers of the past 24 hours concern Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima and his studio, Kojima Productions according to the word around town, the studio is preparing to reveal a brand new horror title, going by the nam??e of "Overdose."

The rumor was sparked by professional spoiler Tom Henderson, who has an uncanny knack for being very right in these matters. Writing on Try Hard Guides, Henderson claims to have already seen the first teaser trailer for Overdose, which sees a young woman played by Margaret Qualley of Death Stranding, The Nice Guys, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood picking ?her way through a creepy corridor by torchlight.

While this remains a mere rumor at present, Henderson's word has been proven correct on numerous occasions. In fact, (as noted by VGC) Henderson has gone on to claim that Kojima Productions has directly requested the removal of his words, in a tweet that has itself been removed. If Kojima and pals are preparing to reveal Overdose, then one would surmise that we can see it during this season's gaming news dige?st perhaps during Thursday's Summer Game Fest, hosted by Kojima's speed-dial buddy Geoff Keighley.

Either way, it's exciting news, people have been linking Hideo Kojima to horror for many years, (lest we forget P.T.), and he has already proven he knows his way around a creepy character or two in the Metal Gear and Death Stranding titles. If Overdose exists, then it could prove to be the realization of the scary, Silent Hill-type adven??ture that has eluded the studio thus far.

2 Death 2 Stranding

Well, it looks like more Death Stranding is on the way. Norman Reedus, star of The Walking Dead TV series who played Sam "Porter" Bridges in Death Stranding, seems to have just confirmed a part two in a new ??intervi?ew.

In an interview with LeoEdit (spotted by GamerUP), Reedus is asked about filming for the Death Stranding video game. To which he respon??ds, "We j??ust started the second one."

In a follow-up question, Reedus tells the story of how he and Hideo Kojima met through mutual friend Guillermo Del Toro. He describes seeing an early version of Kojima's Silent Hill project. Reedus committed and well, the rest is long, fraught video game history.

"It took me maybe two or three years to finish all the MoCap se??ssions and everythin??g," said Reedus. "It takes a lot of work. And then the game came out, and it just won all these awards, and it was a huge thing, so we just started part two of that."

Well, that certainly reads like two confirmations of a new Death Stranding.

Bridging the gap

Kojima has teased a bit about his next project in the past. In June 2020, he posted some images of his workspace as he worked on a new title with Yoji Shinkawa, one of his longtime collaborators. Fans at the time even spotted the word "Bridges" on some concept art.

But Kojima has also been rumored to up to several different projects. A report indicated he was working with Microsoft for an Xbox game. And he also told Famitsu that his next?? project is a big title that is a "n?ew challenge."

Death Stranding did get a Director's Cut last year, adding new content and tools for Sam to make the journey across America. We haven't had any indication of a sequel until now though. But according to Norman Reedus, I guess we can look forward to a possible new Death Stranding.

Kojima rebuffs the PlayStation rumors

A theory running around got a little traction last night, before being put down by Kojima himself. Following up a previous tweet, Hideo Kojima assured followers that Kojim??a Productions is still an independent studio.

For context, some folks have been speculating that Kojima Productions could be next in line for a Sony acquisition. PlayStation has been picking up studios, from Housemarque to Bungie. And a recent refresh of the PlayStation Studios banner, as spotted by ResetEra, fanned the flames.

So last night, when Kojima tweeted the PlayStation Studios logo—with Death Stranding now part of it—without context, spe??culation kicked into gear??.

In a follow-up tweet not long after, Kojima clarified. "I'm sorry for the misunderstanding, but Kojima Productions has been and will continue to be an independent studio," he wrote on Twitter.

//twitter.com/HI?DEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/151484419081937305??6

Stranding alone

Though Kojima Productions has had a good relationship with Sony thus far, with its debut title being a PlayStation console exclusive, it looks like nothing major's shifted. It is pretty funny to see a context-less tweet rile up the s?peculation machine, though.

Acquisitions have been on the rise, with some major moves like Sony nabbing Bungie and Microsoft going for Activision Blizzard. Even outside the console manufacturers, others are picking up smaller studios and bringing them in. Publishers seem keen on build??ing up their studio presen??ce.

Kojima, meanwhile, remains independent. The word, according to GamesBeat's Jeff Grubb, is that Kojima Productions could be collaborating with Xbox. That doesn't rule out a potential move down the line; just look at Bethesda's situation with Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo for that. ?But Kojima has assured that at least for now, the studio will rema??in independent.

Honestly, I'm more interested in seeing what hallway Kojima Productions concocts for its next studio. What could possibly top the Ludens hallway?

'We decided to store it as digital data'

The Koj?ima Productions offices are moving, after five long years at the? incredibly memorable Tokyo location.

Odds are you've seen pictures of the aforementioned office at some point, whether it's the super long "Ludens hallway" or via the numerous shots in the Conan O'Brien tour. Well, now that exact layout is gone. Several days ago Kojima confirmed the news, stating:

"Today is the day we say goodbye to the entrance, the Ludens hallway, and the kitchen that have been our home for a little over five years. Many memories come ?to mind. Farewell ????????"

Suffice to say an exact reason wasn't given for the move, or how the new Kojima Productions offices will stack up: all we know at the moment is that he's hard at work on a new game. Oh, and in true Kojima fashion, he's "storing part of it in the Metaverse." Several days after announcing that he had packed up and left, Kojima himself tweeted out that the "iconic entrance" (but is it as iconic as an Ubisoft hat?) was being stored as digital data via video? and VR, since it "could no longer be physically moved or stored."

I wouldn't put it past him to just straight up put the hallway in a playable opening credits scene in his next game; or e?ven a random hallway in a random section of s??aid game as an Easter egg.

Death Stranding and Metal Gear creator honored

Kojima Productions announced that its director, Hideo Kojima, has received the Award of Fine Arts from Japan's Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology??.

The honor is awarded by the Japanese government to individuals who excel in the c?ultural arts. Categories for the annual award include film, music, literature, dance, broadcasting, critique, and media arts. Kojima is only the second video game developer to have received the Fine Arts award, following Nintendo veteran Shigeru Miyamoto, who was handed the honor back in 2010.

As reported by Siliconera, Kojima was the recipient of this year's award due to the director's work on esoteric sci-fi adventure Death Stranding, which was praised by the cultural arts committee for its dynamic vision and scope with attention paid to its overall narrative of segmented?? societies reconnecting through the protagonist, Sam Porter Bridges.

In addition, Kojima was praised for his esoteric approach to game design, and persistent desire to implement new and intriguing mechanics and narratives to his titles a design methodology that resonates all the way back to his earliest works, including the 1987 release Metal Gear.

Death Stranding is available now on PS4 and PC. A "Director's Cut" edition featu?ring additional content is now available on PS5, with a PC port launching on Steam and Epic Games Stor?e on March 25.

Steam and Epic Games Store upgrade available for returning PC players on March 30, 2022

The enhanced Death Stranding Director's Cut has been exclusive to PlayStation 5 since September, but it won't be much longer before PC players can check out some of these new features like ultra-wide support and the Cargo Catapult structure. 505 Games and Kojima Productions are releasing the Director's Cut of this unnervingly accurate American adventure for PC on March 30, 2022, across Steam and the Epic Games Store.

How much does it cost? The upgrade is just like before on PS5.

  • If you're an all-new player, Death Stranding Director's Cut will cost $39.99 on PC.
  • If you're a returning player â€?with the "base game installed" â€?then Death Stranding Director's Cut will be a $9.99 upgrade on PC.
  • Worth noting if you're planning to upgrade in March: the original PC version of Death Stranding is $17.99 right now in the Lunar New Year Steam Sale.

"There will be the option to transfer your progress and we’ll provide more information closer to launch," according to the developers. That's how it was for the PS4-to-PS5 transition as ?well, albeit a bit mo??re involved than the typical seamless save-data-in-the-Xbox-ecosystem experience. (Like other PS4 games, the data first had to be "exported.")

New to Death Stranding on PC, players will be able to tap into Intel's Xe Super Sampling (XeSS) tech for "high? graphical detail along with elevated performance."

As for the Director's Cut release in general, you can expect some neat but not necessarily "game-changing" additions. My favorites were the admittedly very powerful Maser Gun that could KO-zap the Mule menace, the Firing Range time-trial drills, and the Ruined Factory storyline that fleshes out certain characters, as well as Kojima and co.'s wider lore about this crazed world of delivery people, time-altering rain, and freaky a??pparitions.

Death Stranding Director's Cut PC ultrawide screenshotThe BB picture up top is a PS5 capture (I couldn't resist), but this is an official PC screenshot.

You can hear my extended impressions of the Death Stranding Director's Cut PS5 version over here, although you might find those images to be too spoilery if you're totally unini?tiated. This expanded and tweaked version of the game makes an already awesom?e hiking adventure game a little smoother without feeling too heavy-handed.

It's worth the $10 upgrade, but don't?? fe?el obligated unless you're willing to replay it all.

Just leave it with a neighbor

[Update: 505 Games has officially confirmed that Death Stranding Director's Cut is coming to PC on both the Epic Games and Steam storefront on March 30, 2022.]

This version will incorporate Intel's new Xe Super Sampling technology, as previously noted, for an "enhanced experience." It will also have "high frame rate," Photo Mode, ultra-wide monitor support, and cross-over content from Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077.

Our original story follows.]

Kojima Productions' enhanced release Death Stranding Director's Cut may be headed to PC, at leas??t that's the good word doing the rounds after PC company Intel seemingly leaked the existence of the port via an alleged press release.

Tech website Videocardz.com published a yet-to-be-official press release seemingly sent to the website by an anonymous source that focuses on Intel's upcoming range of Intel Arc GPU chips. The press release, supposedly scheduled for the CES 2022 trade show, features a list of publishers and games that will be taking advantage of the Intel Arc's "XSS Super Resolution" technology. Death Stranding Director's Cut is among the listed titles.

Now, there's a lot of salt to be pinched here. The press release is unconfirmed and the source is anonymous. But it's hardly a stretch to imagine that the re-released edition of Kojima's weird dystopian tale would eventually find its way to PC. After all, the "vanilla" edition of Death Stranding hit Steam in July 2020, eight months after its PS4 release. Given that Director's Cut arrived on PS5 in September 2021, a similar window would see it ported to PC late ??spring/early summer.

That is, of course, assuming that it is co??ming at all, but the truth will out soon enough. CES 2022 begins tomorrow, January 5, and will run until Saturday, January 8. As such, we can expect confirmation either way in the very near future.

Kojima Productions is working on another 'big title'

Although we might be waiting a bit for Kojima's new game beyond Death Stranding, w?e do know that it will "challenge different mediums and expressions," according to the auteur himself?.

Speaking to Famitsu as p?art of the outlet's annual New Year check-in, Hideo Kojima took some time to reflect on his next project, which is currently underway at Kojima Productions. Here's what he had to say when asked about future plans (as translated by Gematsu):

“A big title, and a title that’s a new challenge. As the boundaries of entertainment disappear in the near future, I’d like to make this a year that we take a step forward into challenging different mediums and expressions./p>

While we already knew that Kojima's new game was happening, it's always fun to check in with Kojima and see where he's going to zig and zag. He's constantly talki??ng up his projects, but hopefully this one will actually follow through with the above missive.

Kojima's last thing is the Death Stranding Director's Cut, which came out earlier this year and built upon the foundation of the base game from 2019. But I think folks are ready for something new, especially those who weren't taken by Death Stranding in the first place.

While I appreciated the delivery simulator with a twist for what it was, I hope his new project is a little less esoteric from a gameplay perspective; at the very least, it'll be easier to talk about wi?th more people!

Ooo, piece of candy

If you played Death Stranding, either back on PlayStation 4 or more recently with the Director's Cut, you're more than familiar with the BTs. These appari??tions are a mix of spectral foe and environmental hazar?d that hamper Sam on most of his treks. But there are lots of BTs, and some are not necessarily all bad.

In fact, you might have seen a specific variant of BT that's rather helpful during your travels. And to uncover their true nature, player "thangpv2" on the Death Stranding subreddit undertook a science experiment to catch a "white BT" in action.

By luring an NPC into an area and then blocking them in with bikes, leaving them unable to escape by normal means, this Death Stranding player summoned the white BT. The inky goop appears underneath one of the bikes and moves it out of the way, freeing the NPC to ??resume normal NPC actions. It's like the world is setting itself right.

In the comments, other players share stories of these pale BTs appearing in their own playthroughs of Death Stranding, removing obstacles that were blocking paths. Reports have existed for a while of their appearances in the game,? but with this neat little experiment, we're a little closer to dis?covering the truth.

It's cool that we're several years in, with an added Director's Cut, and people are still finding out cool little nuances within Death Stranding. I've enjoyed following along as players start to mess around with the cargo catapult and the other new tools the PS5 version added, but even still, I have to wonder if any deeper mysteries still linger. Well, aside from any more surprise jump-scares.

Impressions: It's worth upgrading to the PS5 remaster for $10 if you're a returning PS4 player

Death Stranding Director's Cut is a remaster for PlayStation 5 with 4K60 support, new quality-of-life features like a Firing Range with a bunch of weapon-specific time-trial drills, a Buddy Bot follower who can carry Sam, and a Cargo Catapult to launch h??eavy shipments over dicey terrain plus a few new quick but lore-impacting story Orders.

It's out September 24, and I've played it. A lot of it! This iscovn't going to be a beat-by-beat breakdown of every single addition, upgrade, or tweak, as I'm sure a wiki will have that covered soon. Instead, I've just got some non-spoilery impressions to share about what to expect from Death Stranding Director's Cut as a veteran player and a first-timer.

The zip-lines are my favorite open-world game mechanic in the last decade

If you're coming in fresh, it's $50. If you're a returning Porter, the Director's Cut is a $10 upgrade from the PS4 edition. (Sorry, PC players, but this is a PS5 exclusi?ve for now.)

Some quick housekeeping: You can bring your save data over from the PS4 version, which is great, because this is not a short game though you'll need to do so from within the PS4 edition via an in-game pause -> System -> Export Save Data option. Yes, it's a bit annoying to need to (probably) download and install the game again rather than just have it just effortlessly mig?rate from the cloud. Set aside some time (and storage) accordingly.

Having completed Death Stranding on PS4 in 2019, that's what I did, and a whole bunch of PS5 trophies popped back-to-back. That said, I ended up starting a fresh file to see how the new Director's Cut content and features would be doled out. As it turns out, it's a very gradual rollout to the point where, if it's been a while, you might not realize some of this stuff is even new. For instance, the Support Skeleton that wasn't here this whole time?

An upside-down rainbow is just business as usual in Death Stranding Director's Cut

Before I go any further, I should share some of my general thoughts about Death Stranding. Chris reviewed the PS4 versio??n at la??unch, so where do I stand on this game?

I loved getting wrapped up in the tantalizing mysteries of Death Stranding before it launched in 2019, back when we had no context for the naked man with the child on the otherworldly beach. Those eye-catching trailers, ethereal and anachr?onistic themes, and masterful song selections were something else. The pre-release buildup from Kojima Productions felt like an experience in and of itself, even now, in retrospect. They elevated it. Hideo Kojima can get my imagination whirling like no other game director.

I also loved going on the wild (but sometimes too meandering?) ride that this cinematic-h??eavy open-world delivery adventure game ended up being. The story wasn't what I expected hell, neither was the "conscious hiking" gameplay but overall, I got a lot out of it. Some emotional moments fell flat for me, while others really resonated.

This game had (and still has) some one-of-a-kind moments. It was bizarre to play Death Stranding a game about reconnecting disparate and guarded people across the US in the time before Covid. It's bizarre, in a different way, to play it again mid-pandemic.

Before getting the opportunity to play Death Stranding Director's Cut for this site, I honestly wasn't sure I'd ever want to replay the game. In some ways, it's the equivalent of a hard-hitting movie you only need to watch once in your life. But I went for it, and I'm ultimately glad I did. After a few slow-burning introductory chapters, Death Stranding kicks off, and before I knew it I was (once again) building an elaborate network o??f zip?-lines to ferry my Sam, and maybe yours, around the treacherous area surrounding Mountain Knot City.

Shooting off a shipment with the Cargo Catapult

At this point, you're probably wondering when I'm going to get to the actual Director's Cut impressions. Well, I ki?nd of already have! This isn't a huge story expansion or anything.

PS5 features like few-second-long load times are a huge upgrade, as some of that waiting around really added up in the original PS4 version, while haptic feedback on the DualSense controller is more of a nicety than a mind-blowing inclusion. It builds upon Death Stranding's existing gamepad-trigger-clenching perilous-mailman ?immersion, for sure.

I will say, if you've got headphones, use 'em the 3D audio is fantastic w??hether you're trudging through a snowstorm, wading through a chilly river, or vibing out to Low Roar.

When it comes to the new content and playthings, don't be afraid of the Director's Cut somehow mucking up the purity of the original Death Stranding experience. I was ?a little worried about that coming in, but after completing a full story playthrough, I don't see it?? that way at all. Some of the sloggier missions can be sanded down now if you want.

Death Stranding Director's Cut adds a race track, but you've got to build it yourself

Yes, certain additions like the Maser Gun are going to make things easier initially. The gun lets you one-hit KO the Mules with a well-aimed and I do mean well?-aimed zap to the head at close range, and it can temporarily ground vehicles. When it comes to decked-out late-game foes, or even ??just the ghostly BTs, you won't be using it.

The Support Skeleton is an all-rounder for hauling heavy cargo; I used it as much as possible until I was better off with the All-Terrain Skeleton. The Buddy Bot is like a souped-up version of t??he Floating Carrier wi??th more freedom of movement.

And really, that's the bulk of what to expect: more options for Death Stranding's various hostile-terrain-traversal situations. I didn't find a great need for the skinny Chiral Bridges, the pretty short-range Cargo Catapult (which seems best for building projects), or the wacky trick-enabling Jump Ramps, though? I'm sure some players will find clever uses.

While I like those additions from a "if another asynchronous player builds it I'll definitely use it" perspective, I'm not a fan of the race track, which you can build south of the Timefall Farm. Does it look neat? Absolutely. Is it fun to drive any of these vehicles, including a roadster designed with the track in mind, in multi-lap races? Not particularly. And I say that as someone who likes mountain biking in this game.

On the other hand, the Firing Range is great for what it is a risk-free opportunity to get good with every weapon (as you unlock them naturally in the game) and put your skills to the test against targets and simulated enemies for leaderboard glory. Yo??u can access this room from any delivery terminal once it becomes a??ccessible very early into the game.

Taking aim at a target in the Firing Range

Worth stressing: you aren't just going to start a new game and have immediate a??ccess to this new stuff. It'll show up? when it's supposed to show up. It's all woven in.

Speaking of which, you can start the new Ruined Factory storyline, which is three cool but normal-length Orders, pretty early on in the first region of Death Stranding.

I'm not going to go into specifics any more than I should the trailer with a Metal Gear Solid joke showed plenty as is so I'll just say that this stuff is one of the most human-combat-heavy bits of Death Stranding. Ultimately, you'll make three trips to a factory with interesting story implicati??ons and some big connections to existing characters. The first two trips can happen right away, and the final one won't be possible until after you've completed the main story. The Ruined Factory includes new cinematics, too.

??Is it enough to single-handedly warrant the $10 upgrade for returning players? Maybe, maybe not. But I think overall, with the PS5 ??refinements and some of the new tools, it is.

Using the Maser Gun in the Ruined Factory

My advice? If you've got a partial PS4 save file ready to go, or even an endgame file that's not at 100 percent completion, Death Stranding Director's Cut is a wonderful way to tie up loose ends. Some of the additions are interesting distractions at best, while others are genui??nely helpful tools that provide alternate plans of attack as a futuristic delivery man. The short but memorable line of new side-quests is essentially icing on top.

Brand-new players, by all means. Tear into this poignant??, artisanal, off-the-rails hiking video game, even if it's slow at first. And don't forget to smash that "l?ike" button.

Warning: Spoileriffic Trailer

Later this month, Kojima Productions will release the enhanced edition of the studio's bizarre 2019 adventure Death Stranding. In keeping wit??h the release's "Director's Cut" subtitle, Hideo Kojima himself has gone and made his own final trailer in order to get fans old and new hype for t?he returning Sam Bridges and his strange and otherworldly odyssey.

You can check out the video below, with Kojima recommending the preview be enjoyed "in a sound environment". Ye be warned: While mostly free o??f any context, the final trailer is?? chock-a-riffic with scenes taken from Death Stranding's main story.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=EV53lnCzP1w

Releasing on PlayStation 5 on September 24, Death Stranding: Director's Cut will be a remaster of the cult PS4 and PC release, boasting 4K gameplay in Native Mode, support for Haptic Feedback, faster load-times, ultra-wide monitor support, and the inclusion of several previously exclusive DLC items such as the Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077 crossover items from the PC release. And it's not all tech polish, as Director's Cut is also packing plenty of gameplay goodies.

Out in the wastelands, players can enjoy new missions, discover new equipment and weaponry, engage in hazardous new encounters and battles, and even take to the all-new Fragile Circuit for an amusingly out-of-place spot of stunt car racing. For long-term Death Stranding fans, it seems that there's a lot here to warrant a fresh run, ?while all-new visitors will receive a finely polished vi??sion of Kojima's modern classic.

Death Stranding: Director's Cut launches on PS5? September ?24. A PC port is likely, but yet to be officially confirmed.

And it's a $10 upgrade with save-transfer support

[Update: Closing out Gamescom: Opening Night Live, Kojima Productions dropped off an in-depth overview of the new features and gameplay in Death Stranding Director's Cut.

It looks like an awesome upgrade, especially the MGS: VR Missions-esque combat training facility and some?? of the easier traversal options like the ridable Buddy Bot and Sam's thrusters. I'm not sure I have the mental bandwidth to return to this rui??ned world anytime soon, but if and when I do, I can see myself using a lot of these new delivery playthings.

//youtu.be/-usmP3hjK8k

All-new players have? a hell of a game waiting for them, that's fo??r sure.]

The first trailer for the Death Stranding Director's Cut was a silly skit meant to get t??he word out, but this second trailer, from today's State of Play, delivers the goods.

I wasn't expecting to want to replay this great but long-winded game again from the beginning I've already gone back once and didn't come anywhere close to finishing Sam's journey a second time but here we go. There's kind of a lot going for Death Stranding Director's Cut, enough that I'm about to jump off the fence.

//youtu.be/6tgsz7WbidU

You can pinpoint the second I flipped from "I'll pass??" to "well..." the Cargo Catapult. Let me launch your bulky goods into the sun for the heck of it.

I also dig the ?strange yet fitting Fragile Circuit with multiple vehicle types to race, tracks to master, and medals to earn. That seems like a potential crowd favorite.

Other new features:

  • New battles (with a scream straight out of Bloodborne? Not really, but still!)
  • Upgraded melee attacks
  • An electromagnetic Maser Gun
  • Mounted machine guns
  • Firing Range
  • The Support Skeleton
  • The Buddy Bot
  • The Jump Ramp
  • New story missions
  • UI enhancements
  • New online features like Friend Play and Leaderboards (details TBA)

Death Stranding Director's Cut will be out for PlayStation 5 ?on September 24, 2021.

I'm curious to see how all of the new tools, weapons, and playthings fit into the existing Death Stranding foundation without feeling tacked-on or unbalanced. There's also the million-dollar upgrade ques??tion. Do we need to pay full price if we own the original PS4 version? Thankfully, no. The upgrade is $10, according to Kojima Productions.

New storyline content with a grave site in Death Stranding Director's Cut

Today's PlayStation Blog post from the studio also confirmed a few other details: upscaled 4K60 in Performance Mode, native 4K in Fidelity Mode, haptic feedback and adaptive trigger support (of course), the inclusion of the Half-Life and Cyberpunk 2077 items (from the PC version), and the ability to carry your save over from PS4 to?? PS5.

Also, there's ultra-wide support, which is not an everyday bullet point for a PS5 game. Hopefully Death Stranding PC players don't have to wa??it too long?? for their Director's Cut.

I'm not seeing the upgrade discount yet, but Death Stranding Director's Cut is listed on the PlayStation Store, and it's $50 fo?r new players. Th?at's a surprise in and of itself!

It has performed 'quite well' from a sales perspective

Death Stranding is getting its Director's Cut in September, but it's apparently already performed well on PlayStation 4 and PC. According to Kojima Productions, Death Stranding has sold through over five m??illion units? on PS4 and PC.

Kojima Productions' head of publishing Jay Boor told GamesIndustry.biz that the studio is optimistic about the release of Death Stranding Director's Cut on PlayStation 5.

"With Death Stranding being the first title developed out of Kojima Productions, from a sales perspective, it has performed quite well," said Boor. "As of March 2021, Death Stranding has sold through?? over five million units worldwide on PlayStation 4 and PC."

Boor also notes that while the core Kojima Productions team hasn't changed significantly since the launch of Death Stranding, its operations h?ave changed, as a result of the pandemic.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tgsz7WbidU

Death Stranding first launched in 2019, as Kojima Productions' debut game about Sam "Porter" Bridges trying to reconnect the world, carrying massive amounts of cargo on the way. The post-apocalyptic delivery sim arrived on PC last year, with a few new pieces of content like a headcrab from Half-Life included.

The Director's Cut will be adding even more content to Kojima's tale of trekking across America. There's some new equipment, like the Buddy Bot who can roam the vast landscape of the U.S. with you, the Jump Ramp, and the Cargo Catapult. There are also some new story missions in store, some upgraded melee attacks, and also a ra?cing circuit? I mean, it'd be a shame to let all those big, open highways go to waste.

Even if Kojima takes some umbrage with the Director's Cut label, the new version of the game will be bringing a fair amount of new content to Kojima Productions' debut when Death Stranding Director's Cut goes live on Sept. 24, 2021 for the PlayStation 5?.

Building more Bridges

During today's Summer Game Fest 2021 Kick-Off Live, Hideo Kojima appeared to discuss a little bit about what Kojima Productions has been up to. Part of that, apparently, is even more Death Stranding.

Kojima confirmed that a Death Stranding: Director's Cut is on the way, with a full reveal weeks away. There was also a trailer which, if you're a fan of Kojima's previous work, will probably get a good laugh or two ??out of you.

Not sure Sam is as up to a sneaking mission as Snake. That's all we know for now, but hey, that "Captured on PS5" mark at the beginning of the trailer is pretty promising. Death Stranding was pretty great on PC, so hopefully the PlayStation 5 could do ?the same. We'll see more when Kojima Productions shares it.
