What improvements will the PS5 Pro add?

It seems like the improvements the PS5 Pro will add will vary by game. However, it is supposed to support ray-tracing at higher resolutions and AI upscaling called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. Some fans have complained that the Performance Mode for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is blurry while the game runs at 60 frames per second (FPS). The PS5 Pro supposedly gives the game higher-quality visuals (via Digital Foundry) while running at that pace rather than 30 FPS.

The Bloodborne-esque Lies of P has quietly removed the anti-tamper DRM Denuvo, as indicated by the changelog on SteamDB. The reasons for the change are currently unknown, though there probably won't be any com??plaints about it.

The DRM was added on September 15, just a few days before the game's official release which resulted in a bit of controversy. Fingers have often been pointed at Denuvo for affecting the performance of games that implement it, though the company itself has repeatedly denied these allegations. At the very least, it doesn't seem to be the case with Lies of P which runs smoothly on PC.

There are a few reasons why Denuvo has earned itself a bad reputation. In addition to being blamed for the poor performance of games such as Resident Evil Village and Tekken 7, it also has the potential to leave games unplayable which happened in 2021 due to "domain issues." This impacted several games, including Shadow of the Tomb Raider and Guardians of the Galaxy.

Denuvo or not, Lies of P has earned itself an ardent fan base despite the game's difficulty. With over a million copies sold, it's an undeniable hit?? for Neowiz Games, and it also has the honor of having been nominated for several awards, including the Golden Joystick Award and The Game Awards.

The praise isn't universal, however. Our own Zoey Handley gave the game a rating of 6.5, pointing out that it's rather unoriginal, th?ough she does add that it "pales only slightly in comparison to FromSoftware’s titles, and that’s a feat in itself."

The removal of Denuvo may draw in more players interested in the dark reimagining of Carlo Collodi's timeless tale of the lying puppet. If you've been curious, now's a good time to give Neowiz's game a chance, as it is currently on sale on Steam as of February 19.

For those who have been playing already and are looking for more action, on February 14, Lies of P gave players new weapons and armor as part of the free Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty DLC. A sequel is also in the works??, though no details re?garding what to expect have been officially shared yet.

After Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty received Lies of P-themed DLC back in September, now the puppet souls-like will reciprocate. Neowiz revealed today that a new free Wo Long-themed DLC pack will hit the game next week on February 13. Here is the pack?? in action which includes weapon and armor costume cosmetics.

The two Souls-like action RPG's are going to collide once more as Lies of P fans will get acc?ess to several pieces of cosmet??ic DLC as part of the free pack including:

• Azure Dragon Crescent Glaive weapon
• Armor of the Honorable and Bandana of the Honorable costume

Also launching today is the Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty Complete Edition which includes all the released Wo Long DLC including the Lies of P weapons that were released in September.

It's always great to see two great games come together for a fun collab. It's a bit basic with it just being a single weapon cosmetic and an armor costume, but f??or free DLC I'll take what? I can get these days.

Souls-like games seem to be more popular than ever. One of the newest additions to the genre, Lies of P, had a very successful launch back in September—and now, the project's director has confirmed a Lies of P sequel is on the way.

Game director Ji Won Choi broke the news in a newly released director's letter video. He began by thanking fans for their enthusiasm and reiterated that the game broke the million copies sold mark following its September 19 launch. He then stated that the team's "highest priority is dev??eloping the DLC and wo??rking on our sequel."

The director? confirmed that the game's next patch should be arriving in November. Within it will be balancing to the Weapon Assembly System, as "certain blades and handles were not meeting expectations."

Ji Won Choi also mentioned that the team at Neowiz Games is aware that some players were having problems with the early difficulty of th?e game. The?? upcoming patch will make the Rising Dodge Ability a default skill that players can select to help alleviate any early struggles. In addition to that, Polendia will now sell two additional quartz from the first state of his shop.

The November Lies of P patch will also include free cosmetics to look forward to. Alidoro's costume, including his mask, is being added, as is the Alchemist's Hat and a pair of glasses. To provide more character cust??omization, an extra facial accessory slot is being implemented so both glasses and hats can be w??orn at the same time going forward.

In late September, a collaboration between Neowiz Games and Team Ninja saw a pair of Lies of P weapons being introduced into the world of Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. The director's letter con??firmed that the duo will work together once again for another collaboration, with details coming a bit further down the line.

The Lies of P soundtrack is officially on the ??way, too. The team is working to deliver it "as swiftly as they can". It will feature over 60 tracks? in total, which incorporates nearly all of the game's music.

As the video wrapped up, Ji Won Choi stated that Neowiz is "fully dedicating ourselves to the development of the DLC" and revealed the studio is actively hiring to bring the project to fruition. It was then that Choi teased the game's upcoming DLC again, saying he "secretly sneaked sketches" for viewers to enjoy. You can see the pair of concept art screens below. It will have to hold fans over until more details on the Lies of P sequel or the upcoming DLC trickle out.

Developed by Neowiz Games and Round8 Studio, and released on September 18, Lies of a P is a soulslike that has managed to stand out in its oversaturated genre by offering a unique take on Carlo Collodi's The Adventures of Pinocchio. De?velopers have revealed that the game has already sold a million copies globally.

This achievement comes with relatively good critical acclaim, and it currently has "Very Positive" user reviews on Steam. Commenting on the milestone in a press release, Neowiz CEO Seungchul Kim stated that "this incredible milestone for Lies of P proves the potential ??of Korean conso?le games on the global stage."

Both South Korean studios should be very proud of their success, though it did not come easily, and Kim reveals that "the Lies of P project was a challenging endeavor for Neowiz and Round8 Studio." There were also a few minor controversies along the way, including the removal of an anti-cop sign in the game.

Developers are just beginning to enjoy the fruits of their labor, as the game has also received some notable award show nominations. This includes a "Best Visual Design" nomination at this year's Golden Joystick Awards ceremony.

Based on my review in progress, I was hoping Lies of P would improve over time. It didn't.

No matter how much I play Lies of P, I can’t get over how heavily it borrowed from FromSoftware’s Souls series. I get it. The video game industry is built on trends. In the wake of every big success, there are always a number of followers who try to capitalize on the newfound hunger. But this isn’t Cities: Skylines borrowing the zoning system from SimCity 2000. This isn’t even Final Fantasy using the party system from Dragon Quest.

Lies of P borrows everything from FromSoftware’s titles. Movement, combat, right down to the aesthetic. A brief glance at Lies of P, and you could easily mistake it for Bloodborne. Lies of P is Bloodborne with puppets, and that is ?such ??a waste of Neowiz’s obvious talent.

Lies of P is inspired by The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi, but darker. It’s like how American McGee’s Alice is a dark reimagining of Alice in Wonderland or how Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland is a dark reimagining of Alice in Wonderland. Taking a children’s story (even if The Adventures of Pinocchio is a pretty dark children’s story to begin with) and making it nightmarishly twisted is kind of storytelling easy mode. What’s worse is that they darkened it by crossing it with, of course, Bloodborne.

You’re dropped in the city of Krat, where a one-two punch of plague and puppet rampage has left it desolate. The city had risen to prominence ??on the back of some forbidden discovery,? and it eventually backfired. Sound familiar?

Your goal is to follow the orders of some rich people in a hotel as they try to save what remains of their valuable assets. Or, I guess, figure out what went wrong with the puppets and put a stop to that. It follows the minimalistic storytelling of the Souls series, so plot points and lore are delivered in tiny morsels??. In a world of cutscenes bloated with exposition, I still prefer this?? method of storytelling, I just wish it wasn’t so obviously borrowed.

Then touch the puppet inside me

I said in my in-progress review that it would be easier to list the things that Lies of P doesn’t lift from FromSoftware’s games than it would be to list the things that ?it does. That remains true th??roughout the game. If anything, as you progress, you start to notice more facets and mechanics that it uses.

Look, the 1979 movie Alien was pitched as �em>Jaws in Space.�A lot of creation is iteration; it’s unavoidably part of the process. But Lies of P isn’t an iteration. It’s so much the same. The moment I was handed a sword in the game, I knew what to do. The movement, the animation, and the secondary mechanics feel so familiar you could swear they were part of the same series. Your damage scales with two separate charact??er stats, with weapons favoring one or the other. The vitality, dodge rolls, and health systems are all exact replicas.

Even the aesthetic is unmistakable. The desolate streets and murky forests. The grand architecture and broad vistas. The soft-spoken people who speak from lit windows. Hell, even the music is largely the same. It’s complete silence until you enter a boss room, and then suddenly, the Latin choir shouts itself to life. Now, you can collect records and play them in the hotel, and they are fantastic. Absolute gold star there.

Ye've got a heart of brass

The contrib?utions to the genre that Neowiz actually made are easily my favorite parts of the game. That would be the puppets. The ornate animatronics go a long way in balancing the typical grotesque monsters. At the same time, there’s a lot of inhumanity in the world. You pick up snippets of lore scattered throughout the environments, and they largely lack personality, as if they were written by the puppets t??hemselves. I'm not sure that was intentional.

I’m not intimately familiar with The Adventures of Pinocchio, but I feel like th?ey tie in its themes rather well. There’s a lot of emphasis on finding the puppet protagonist’s humanity through lying and smal??l acts of kindness. You’re given a lot of choices, which seem to reflect on the protagonist and those around him.

I'm not quite so hot on being shackled to a supporting character, though. You’re given a device with a cricket named Gemini (pronounced gem-mini to make it sound like Jiminy Cricket), and I really do not appreciate his input. He’s there to add background and context to what you’re doing, but?? it’s really needless, and?? I find it annoying.

Ma??ybe Gemini is supposed to make up for the lack of ?multiplayer. You might feel lonely without all those messages scrawled on the floor.

Oilborne

Beneath that, yeah, Lies of P is a decent game. It pales only slightly in comparison to FromSoftware’s titles, and that’s a feat in itself. Some of the environments are boxier and less imaginative. The progression is starkly linear compared to the Souls series. There is less diversity in the enemies you go up against. The story is more rote than what you’d find in the nebulous tales of dead Gods that Miyazaki favors. But those are al?l rather small complaints that can add up.

Neowiz manages to land a lot of nuance here. The boss battles have that same intensity as you try to recognize and counter its movements and patterns. It has a lot of that same unforgiving challenge that its progenitors are known for. Those aren’t easy things to replicate. I can bang on all day about how unoriginal it is, but at least it’s executed well. It doesn’t taste like Bloodborne Lite, nor does it taste like Bloodborne Dark. Lies of P is just off-brand Bloodborne.

So, if you’re the type of person who thinks that “fun�is the only relevant criteria for what makes a good game, then have at it. I sincerely think you’ll find a lot to like, and that’s rad. However, if you’re someone who yearns to see growth and advancement within the medium, then this is going to just befuddle you. I think Neowiz shows off a great deal of talent with Lies of P. I just hope what they com??e up with next is something actually original.

Lies of P is a dark fantasy soulslike that retells Pinocchio's story with a grim twist. It's replicating Bloodborne's vibe which not many other big-budget games have tried. The parallels are so blatant between the two that it almost comes as a detriment to the game.

What Bloodborne doesn't have is a hanging puppet with a sign reading "APAB" on it. Lies of P doesn't have one either now, as it was removed from the game before re?lease.

The sign appeared in one image, referencing the saying "All Cops Are Bastards" or ACAB. It stands out so much that it caught the eye of videogames.si's Georgina Young, who interviewed Lies of P's director Ji-Won Choi about it.

Despite being such a small part of the game, Choi was happy to talk about it. He clarified that the sign stands for "All Puppets are Bastards" befo?re jumping into its removal.

The sign's removal came down to not wanting to be "judged based on following trends," according to Choi. Lies of P?? had several other "risky factors" removed to not aliena?te players.

If left in the final product, it could have echoed something like Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's "mechanical apartheid" which was seen as being in bad taste. Lies of P differs ?in that APAB never took a large role its marketing.

A part of me wonders?? if other in-game signs took real-life inspiration since the other signs had no elaboration. Puppets are the game's antagonists, and their depictio??n could have also taken more real-world inspiration at one point.

This hypothetical version of Lies of P and the sign are not in the final product. At least the game's message still appears to be that all puppets are ba?stards.

I remember when Demon’s Souls was released back in 2009, there were many people who called it a market-unfriendly game. There were pushes to get people to buy it just to experience this s?upposedly brutal and novel take on action RPGs. Flash forward 14 years, and it’s one of the biggest sub-genres in the industry.

On one hand, I love Demon’s Souls and most of the games that FromSoftware followed it up with. On the other hand, my favorite games to play are the ones I have?n’t played before, and a lot of the Soulslikes that followed stick a little too close to the formula for my case. It’s something that nags at me. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but at what point does it cross into plagiarism?

Lies of P is one of the slickest Soulslike games that I’ve seen follow in FromSoftware’s wake. On the other hand, it’s also one of the most derivative, and I’m havin??g trouble reconciling those two competing perspectives.

Lies of P is based on The Adventures of Pinnochio by Carlo Lorenzini. It’s not a story that I’ve internalized, so most of the references are lost on me. I get the basics. It takes place in the ostentatious city of Krat, where its prized autom??atons have gone berzerk and, with the aid of a mysterious disease, have killed most of the inhabitants.

You play as one of Gepetto’s puppets, who is unique in being able to break the rules that most other puppets are supposed to be bound by. In a uni??que storytelling angle, there’s a lot of weight put onto breaking these rules. The game visibly hesitates when the protagonist is presented with an unavoidabl??e lie or conflict with a human. These are difficult concepts to give any impact to in video games, so this is a rather unique way of bringing them back around and making them meaningful.

However, much of the storytelling is incredibly similar to the Souls series, and Bloodborne in particular. It’s hard not to feel deja vu when you speak to a person through a lit window that you only became aware of due to their coughing. Likewise, I absolutely cannot believe how similar the NPCs act compared to the ones in the Souls series. Their mouths are poorly animated, as the Lies of P does not change?? perspective to zoom in on them during dialogue. They’re largely locked in place. And they speak ?in this hushed tone; a perpetual indoor voice. It feels stolen.

It’s not the aesthetical choices never bleed into other games, but Lies of P feels like it has lifted things wholesale.

It’s telling how quickly I settled into gameplay, relying only on my familiarity with FromSoftware’s formula. The campfires and torches are replaced by “Star Gazers.�The estus flask mechanic is practically carried over wholesale. I think the list of things that Lies of P does differently i??s much shorter than the things it copied.

I also find it interesting that, with Elden Ring, FromSoftware has iterated on its world design to a point where I find it unlikely that they’ll go back to the classic Dark Souls method of interconnected pathways. Lies of P is, therefore, carrying that torch. There are ladders to extend and doors to unlock to allow one to more easily bypass the riffraff they already waded through. Probing the nooks and crannies of the world results in additional loot. It doesn’t help that the Victorian aesthetic evokes Bloodborne’s gloomy world.

There’s no multi-player, however, which is fine by me. The note system was helpful once upon a time, but every tim??e I pick up one of those games now, it feels like most of the player notes are just tiresome jokes and nonsense. Weirdly, though, you can still summon spirits to assist you during boss battles. However, these are AI controller dummies, and I found they were mostly just useful in distracting the bosses while I repeatedly jammed my saber up their butts. It’s a weird half-measure.

Honest to a fault

I wouldn’t say I’m not enjoying Lies of P so far, but what I’m trying to get across is that I’m conflicted. The video game industry is extremely susceptible to falling into trends, so something that follows an existing formula is hardly rare. Most recently, I’ve been sorting through a glut of Banished-inspired city builders. It usually doesn’t phase me.

However, usually, when a game follows after a popular title, the intention is to build on that foundation. The developer often brings their own spin to a property. It often feels that they felt something was missing from a beloved title and seek to add their own personal spin on it. That’s not something I feel with Lies of P. Someone saw Bloodborne and felt like the market could use another Bloodborne.

On the other hand, Lies of P is at least well-executed and enjoyable. It quite often falls short of its influence, but it’s still enjoyable in its own right. If you’re a fan of the Souls title and are hungry for another competent take on the formula, this fits the bill. For me, I’m still hoping to find a spark of novelty buried in there. I want that one moment where I finally understand why I should be playing this alongside or instead of Bloodborne. Right now, I feel like I would be better off replaying Bloodborne. Onc??e I finish solving the puppet problem, I’ll let you know if that has changed.

In this open-world game, we'll be racing through the city of Honolulu. Additionally, we'll be able to "test [our] off-road skills on the ashy slopes of a volcano [and] master the perfect curve on the tracks," according to the game's official website. ??We'll also ??be able to drive on the beach and adventure through "hidden paths of the luxurious rainforest." With over 400 cars as well, Ubisoft's racing open-world title sounds like a nitro boost to the soul.

You play as Pinocchio, a puppet that's trapped in a horrific world. As he explores it, he'll "untangle the unfathomable secrets of the city's elites and choose whether to confront predicaments with the truth or weave lies to overcome them on the journey to find [himself,]" according to the Steam page. Hopefully, the game lives up its impactful demo from ea?rlier this year.

Starfield is the kind of game you desperately want to be good before it releases. There's so much potential. You can travel to over 1,000 planets with all manner of cities and environments to explore. There are quests to complete, hopefully with many intriguing characters to meet. You can even customize your own spaceship to your liking. It's a sci-fi fan's dreams come to life. I really hope it lives up to everyone's expectations, just like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim did in 2011. It would be a huge win for Xbox Game Studios if Starfield lands with players and critics.

Flipped for your pleasure

If you've been keeping a close eye on the Steam Next Fest (a triannual event that gives developers a chance to showcase their upcoming games), you'll have seen a host of demos go live. As it turns out, there's been one particular demonstration that's stood out above the rest, and that's House Flipper 2.

If you haven't had a chance to check out the original game, you're missing out, especially if you're into methodical, job-based simulations. The sequel is due for release sometime in 2023, and a recent update on Steam shows that not only was House Flipper 2 the most downloaded demo of the recent Next Fest event, but it came top ahead of Lies of P.

Now, maybe you're not overly familiar with Lies of P, but given that it's described as a Bloodborne/Soulslike game that tells the story of Pinocchio, it's gained quite a bit of interest. However, Steam fans felt otherwise, as they seemed to prefer Frozen District's home renovation title. Other games that feature on the Next Fest list of most played demos include the reimagining of the 2002 Adobe Flash game Alien Hominid.

Homes under the hammer

House Flipper 2 was announced a year ago, but it was just recently that the demo went live. Much like the original, the sequel tasks you with purchasing ru?n-down properties that you can then fix, redecorate, and hopefully flip for a profit.

It's part of a growing list of games that take what would otherwise be considered a job and turn it into a surprisingly fun simulation. Titles like Farming Simulator, PowerWash Simulator, and Lawn Mower Simulator (are you s??ensing a pattern yet?) have enjoyed their ?own successes thanks to their more chill gameplay mechanics.

If you want to get to grips with the original, you can get it pretty cheap on Steam at t?he moment. That's good because you're going to need to be good with money when it comes to renovating dilapidated homes.

Collaboration coming in September

Publisher NEOWIZ has announced that it is collaborating with Koei Tecmo in a partnership that will see the former's incoming adventure Lies of P cross swords with the latter's semi-recent release Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty. The two Soulslike titles ?will crossover in curious fashion this Septe??mber.

Outside of noting the collaboration, neither publisher offered any information whatsoever as to what the hook-up will entail, with details expected at a later date. While both games feature ??challenging action-RPG combat, they could perhaps not be more diametrically opposed in regards to characters, settings, and style �Though both games host a typically heav?y and somewhat downbeat mood.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, which launched in March of this year, sees a lone protagonist battle a bevy of demons and monsters from ancient Chinese folklore, set against the background of the Han Dynasty. Developed by Team Ninja, the adventure received critical praise across the board, earning a mighty 9/10 score from our own Chris Carter and selling over a ??mi??llion copies in its launch month.

Lies of P, a retelling of the Pinocchio fable, is currently turning heads thanks to a demo released on PC and console platforms last week. Developed by Round8 Studios, this Gothic tale has players guide young android, P, through a dismal, Belle-Epoque city, in search of answers to their own existence and on the run from a battalion of mechanized enemies. While feedback at this early stage has been a little divisive, Lies of P has great promise, an??d could prove t?o be one of the year's sleeper hits.

A Wax Moustache

Good June, Good Summer, and welcome to Whatcha Been Playing? I hope that the season is bringing more warmth and brightne?ss to your neck of the woods than mine, and I hope that you've been enjoying all of the news, reveals, an?d updates offered by the Not-E3 digital entity that is Summer Game Fest.

Frankly, I ain't too down with it. Covering streams is stressful at the be?st of times, but while E3 required you to go HAM for three days and then coast, SGF marks the start of three straig??ht months of sporadic, randomized showcases. Don't these people know I have a Master Rank to attain?

Still, I hope you've been enjoying the streams and ensuing coverage and, if you're about, then the crew will be on deck on Sunday for the Xbox Games Showcase. Let's see what t??he Black-and-Green brand has in its pockets for the remainder of 2023 and beyond.

And a Beaver Coat

Almost the entirety of my spare time, (what little I could find between the coverage), has been spent kicking names and taking ass in Capcom's excellent Street Fighter 6. These foolish evenings of glory and embarrassment have generally rolled into the early hours of the morning, which was fine when Alpha 2 dropped, but maybe not so much in 2023. I can't help it though. It's hard to tear away when I'm on such a red-hot losing winning streak.

Additionally, I also spent some time wandering the grim, clanking, and oddly charming streets of Neowiz Games' Lies of P, a demo for which is available now on PC and console platforms. This strangely-conceived Soulslike is a retelling of the Pinocchio mythos, reimagined in the dark Belle-E?poque-inspired city of Krat. If you want to hear my own thoughts on how the title is shaping here, then you can check out my preview next week.

I ain't fibbing

As part of this afternoon's Summer Game Fest event, publisher Neowiz Games launched a surprise demo for its upcoming Gothic fairy tale, Lies of P �Th??e grim-looking soulslike �an adaptation of the Pinocchi?o fable �can be checked out right now on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.

Lies of P will put players in the mechanical mantle of android boy Pinocchio,? who must battle his way through the Belle Epoque city of Krat in order to reach his creator Geppetto, who has gone missing amid the darkness that is enveloping the town. Equipped with all manner of weaponry and a penchant for bending the truth, Pinocchio will face an army of nightmarish contraptions on his odyssey to find his "father" and gain true humanity.

The new demo, which is available to download right now will? give interested players a chance to check out the first two chapters of the game. This will include introductions to several main characters, a feel f?or the general gameplay and intense combat, and a face-to-face with a few challenging bosses.

Lies of P will launch September 19?? on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series? X.

Bullshit Artist-ry

Publisher Neowiz has tightened up the release window for its upcoming steampunk soulslike, Lies of P, and now expects the intriguing-looking adventure to launch on PC and consoles in August 20?23.

Developed by South Korean studio Round8, Lies of P is the latest in a long line of adaptations of the Pinocchio story, and sees a puppet mechanoid endeavoring to find his lost creator, Mr. Geppetto, who is located somewhere within the dark, overbearing, Belle Epoque ficti??onal city of Krat. Utilize Pinocchio's mechanization to adaptively combat your opponents, while twisting elements of truth in order to further your goals, survive the hunters, and reunite with your "father".

Appealing to me on a variety on conceptual and aesthetic levels, Lies of P is one of my most anticipated titles of the year. While I'm not yet entirely sure of its quality, the world, characters, style, and interesting use of the Pinocchio lore have piqued my interest, and I'm very much looking forward to seeing whether Round8 has successfully created a worthy entry to the rapidly over-stuffed Soulslike genre. While "August" is not exactly a release date, it'?s the closest to a definitive launch we've had...

...Provided, of course, that someon??e isn't fibbing to us.

As long as yer boy's lyin' nose

One of the more intriguing titles on my (and many others) watchlist is Round8 Studio's Lies of P �this gothic retelling of the famou?s tale of Pinocchio is currently in?? development for PC and console platforms, and promises a dark-yet-faithful take on the story of the puppet child and his endeavor to become human.

Publisher Neowiz has taken the bold step of releasing a huge gameplay showcase, which features no less than 40+ minutes of Lies of P in action. The video spotlights the opulent but miserable architecture, grim splendor, and frightening oppression of the city of Krat, the backdrop to our young hero's quest. Pinocchio must battle violent automatons, engage with what remains of the local community, and harness the?? power of falsehoods in order to come face to face with their ultimate destiny with humanity.

As you can see from these two videos, Lies of P has chosen to embed itself within the Soulslike genre, with deliberately paced gameplay and challenging, rhythmic combat. Pinnochio has access to a wide array of tools and w??eaponry with which to defend himself and, being a doll, is capable of replacing and upgrading components of his own body to better stand up to the challe??nges that lie ahead of him.

And, speaking of lies, Pinnochio must also weaponize truth and dishonesty in order to reach his fate. During his journey, Pinocchio's moral fiber will be repeatedly tested, with his ability to speak both truthfully and untruthfully reflected in the outcome of his tale, changing the fates of himself and those around him. How effective this mechanic plays out in the final game remains to be seen, but I can't be but hugely intrigued by almost every element of Lies of P, from its characters and world to its grim adaptation of a classic fable, married to the uncompromising Soulslike genre.

The (other) Game Awards

And so the sun sets on another Gamescom �and it seems that this year's event was something of a successful comeback. Making a grand return to Germany's Koelnmesse complex, the first physical Gamescom in over t?wo years saw players, press, and publishers gather together to show off and/or experience some of the top titles currently working their way toward an eager gaming public.

While some, this author included, found the Opening Night Live stream a tad underwhelming, there was a large selection of interesting games and projects showcased both online and on the show floor over the course of the week-long event. As is tradition, a jury of Gamescom's peers and employees has put together an awards list, shining the spotlight on a selection of titles showcased during the event that stood out to the panel as b??eing particularly promising, impress??ive releases.

Now, of course, we don't need to put too much weight on this list. It is, after all, an honors list of Gamescom games as decided by Gamescom. But it's still interesting to see which of the 100+ games in attendance this week have been selected as featuring some special promise, and it may help them find their way onto your own personal radar. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing more of Lies of P.

True or dare

From the minds of studio Round8 Studio and publisher Neowiz, comes a bizarre-looking but very intriguing game called Lies of P �shown off again at the Gamescom Opening Night Live stream today. As an action-adventure game with a crazy post-apocalyptic steampunk world, this is instantly going to be popping up on some radars, if it hasn't already. In fact, I kind of just forgot about it for a while.

In any case, we have more to go off of than the prior early gameplay and the promising story trailer. Now we have more cold hard footage. While it's hard to truly tell how the innards of an action game work until you're actually playing it (and the framerate is revealed and laid bare), it's promising so far. I mean even if the action bits aren't up to snuff, the story seems like it'll go to some cool places. That's the hope anyway! Maybe they can na?il both; they have plenty of time to get it right.

As for updated Lies of P platforms as of August 2022, Round8 lists PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Game Pass support is in, and it's due in 2023. If you're interested, there are semi-regular updates on Twitter from the team.

Master of puppets

When Lies of P was first announced, I was awestruck by its concept. An action RPG Souls-like set in a dark Victorian world, where you play as essentially Pinocchio with weapons. It sounds wild! Now, after seeing some gameplay, Lies of P has left me with some weird lingering questions.

Developer Round8 Studio showed off some alpha gameplay of Lies of P today, setting both the tone of the world and displaying some combat. It's?????????????????????????? got a real good look to it, with a ruined city and dark alleyways, softly lit?? by nearby lamps.

But I really have to ask: what was up with that "APAB" sign? Its similarity to real-world acronyms is the sort of sudden fourth-wall breaking moment that reminds me of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided's marketing campaign, and not in a good way.

It's a jarring aside for a game that doesn't really need any help. The concept is already Pinocchio meets Souls. That's already got my attention. Pulling in ?a real-world phrase, with its own connotations and meaning, rarely grafts well onto fiction.

Anyways, the rest of the trailer looks pretty solid. Lies of P looks to have some fast, hectic combat, and ??your puppet protagonist can wield different weapons. Plus, there are some cool-looking animations wh??ere Pinocchio kind of revs up his sword on his arm, and it looks rad.

So it's a bit of a bummer that an otherwise neat trailer has such an odd, lingering aftertaste. Granted, this is all early on in development, but now I'm just wondering what the general shape of Lies of P is? going to be, and what i?t's going to be going for once it launches.

I've got no strings to hold my souls

It's always entertaining to see classic tales reimagined in video games. But today, Neowiz and developer Round8 Studio have announced a mash-up I never thought I'd see: the story of Pinocchio, in the form of a Souls game.

Lies of P is an upcoming entry in the "Souls-like" genre, hit me with a one-two punch. First was the trailer, which appears to show Geppetto entering a fallen city and presumably beat up an automaton? We only smash-cut ?to the aftermath, but Geppetto certainly seems to have given the robot a good walloping.

We then cut to Punished Geppetto, as I'm calling him, standing over a small boy he calls "son," who has a mechanical arm. And after the title drop, the "son" is s??een w?alking towards a wall of various weapons.

This is already a wild trailer, but then you can over to the Steam page for Lies of P, which gives us some more solid details. Playing as Pinocchio, a mechanoid puppet, you seek out Mr. Geppetto in the city of Krat ??and find a way to become human. Alongside the late 19th century aesthetic and swapping ou??t body parts for new skills, there is also a "lying" mechanic. According to the store listing, quests will play out depending on how you lie, and those choices can affect the story's conclusion.

I have to say, I'm intrigued! It feels like a throwback to dark fairy tale games like Alice: Madness Returns, so a Pinocchio Souls is honestly not that hard to? imag?ine. But the lying system is another level, adding some nuance that's both thematic and really wild.

Lies of P is coming to PC, Play??Station 5, and Xbox Series X|S, though it has no release window just?? yet.
