Despite numerous controversies over the years, Twitch remains the biggest platform for streaming and broadcasting video game content. However, the Amazon-owned site has recently tried to implement better features to ??help users moderate their channels, and it looks a new tool is on the way.

According to a screenshot uploaded by streamer and partner Lowco (thanks, Eurogamer), Twitch plans on adding a way for content creators to block banned viewers from watchi?ng their streams. The image depicts a new setting that "when enabled, b?anned users will not be able to watch your live broadcasts."

//twitter.com/LowcoTV/status/1691893134609813526

Currently, a Twitch ban only stops users from chatting, but they can still watch. Note that this new feature is not considered an IP ban, but Twitch's senior product manager Trevor Fisher says the company will look into feedback from streamers with the hope of mak??ing mod??eration tools more powerful.

When are Twitch ban changes coming?

Updates to Twitch bans should roll out in September, available to all users interested in the new featur?e. We don't k??now what date exactly, but details should trickle in as Twitch implements changes from its Patch Note streams.

Blocking users from watching streams (and chatting) won't stop them from ??being able to watch VODs or clip??s, though. Just as Fisher noted, maybe that's something the platform could implement in the future with enough feedback.

With viewership up, amassing around 1.8 billion watched hours for July 2023, Twitch retains its position as the number one place for streaming content. Alternatives like YouTube Gaming are trying to compete,? but the purple site in its current iteratio??n still rules the market. For now.

Despite Twitch being embroiled in controversies (seemingly on a constant basis), it's still the number one choice when it comes to streaming or watching streamers. T??his ?is evidenced by the fact that viewership seems to be on the up and up, with millions still tuning in each month.

Cold hard data seems to back this up, as a report from Gamesindustry.biz states that Twitch has recorded 1.8 billion hours for July 2023. This represents a 5% increase over June, with daily viewership having gone up since March of this year. The figures come from StreamElements and Rai?nmaker.gg.

[caption id="attachment_396076" align="aligncenter" width="640"]A hand holding a phone with the Twitch logo on the screen. Image via Backstage.[/caption]

On top of that, GTA 5 is still the number one game to watch, with 139 million hours logged. Other top titles for the Amazon-owned platform include League of Legends, Minecraft, CS:GO, and Dota 2. Basically, a lot of PvP and/or otherwise multiplayer games.

Recent Twitch backlashes

However, it's not all peachy for Twitch. The site came under fire from streamers recently when its new Partner Plus program was announced. Ma??ny felt that qualifying for the better revenue split was unobtainable for a lot of?? people who rely on the service for income.

Maintaining a recurring subscription count of 350 for three months already sounds like a lofty ask. Add to that the fact that Amazon Pri??me subs and gifted subs don't count, and it's easy to see why a lot of streamers find this target difficult.

That said, from a viewer's perspective, things seem to be going pretty well. With close to two billion hours in total watched for July alone, gamers are evi??dently finding plenty to watc??h on Twitch. It's just a shame the company continues to disappoint many of its broadcasters.

Another Diablo 4 developer update livestream

Mark your calendar. Blizzard has set the date for the next Diablo 4 developer livestream: July 6th at 11AM PST. The stream will feature Lead Game Producer Timothy Ismay and Associate Game Director Joe Piepiora as they detail some upcoming quality-of-life updates and officially announce Season 1 of Diablo 4.

Apparently Diablo Immortal will also make an appearance in the stream to discuss a new class coming mid-July. This is a bit strange as the two games certainly don't share the same player base, even if they are both Diablo games. Either way, you can catch the dual livestream on the official Diablo Twitch channel.

Quality-of-life and Season 1 details are coming for Diablo 4

I have to admit, Blizzard's handling of Diablo 4 post-release has been pretty spectacular so far. The recent patch 1.03 we received on June 27th fixed a lot of bugs, provided a ton of class balance ??changes, and added a ton of quality-of-life (QoL) features to the game. Experience gains have increased all over the game, and Nightmare Dungeons are?? more rewarding to run. With quality-of-life updates being a focus of the livestream, I imagine we'll see even more improvements on the way.

More importantly, Season 1 information is on the way. Executive Producer Rod Fergusson already confirmed we'd be getting the release date next week, which will probably be in this livestream. Furthermore, I think we'll get some details on the new features and content coming in the first season. This will probably include details about the Season 1 battle pass. Unfortunately, we know there will be no leaderboards just?? yet.

If you're interested be sure to check out the Diablo 4 developer update livestream on July 6th at 11AM PST.

Most expensive BlizzCon yet

Blizzard has revealed ticket details and pricing for their upcoming BlizzCon 2023 event. This will be the first in-person BlizzCon after a four year hiatus. The conference is usually an exciting meetup for fans of Blizzard's biggest games including their Warcraft, Diablo, Starcraft, and Overwatch franchises.

In the past the event also included new game announcements and World of Warcraft expansion reveals.

[caption id="attachment_389827" align="alignnone" width="640"]BlizzCon 2023 Banner Image via Activision Blizzard[/caption]

BlizzCon 2023 Ticket Prices

The General Admission ticket is a whopping $299 for the two-day event. The ticket includes access to all halls during the event, earl??y access to the BlizzCon ?Store, event-specific in-game goodies, and a BlizzCon backpack.

Those looking to spend more money can opt for the Portal Pass ticket for $799. The Portal Pass includes everything the General Admission ticket as well as access to the Portal Pass Loung??e. According to the ticket page, the Portal Pass Lounge is a private viewing lounge with private concessions, gameplay experiences, concierge support, Blizzard employee meet-and-greets, and more. You also get access to a separate registration and security line.

With previous BlizzCon's, there was also a charity dinner which included a Portal Pass ticket. There d??oes not appear to be any reference to? the dinner this time around, however.

Virtual Ticket returns but will be optional

The entire event will be livestre??amed for free this year. In the past a $40 to $50 Virtual Ticket was required to watch the stream after the opening ceremony.

Alth?ough not required to view the livestream, it appears a Virtual Ticket will still be available as an optional purchas??e. Purchase of the ticket grants you access to the event-specific in-game goodies as well as early access to BlizzCon merch and more.

At $150 per day for the General Admiss??ion ticket, this seems like a very expensive event. The Portal Pass looks as though you're giving Blizzard an extra $500 to skip the registration and security line. That being said, it's great they are opting to livestream the entire event for free. The developer panels and community contests can be very entertaining, so it's great fans don't have to purchase the Virtual Ticket to watch along.

BlizzCon 2023 will take place in Anaheim, California on November 3??-4. Tickets to the event go on sale Saturday, July 8 at 10AM PDT. A second wave of tickets will go on sale Saturday, July 22 at 10AM PDT.

And it's only for Partners

Twitch is forever altering the way it allows content creators to make money, but it usually comes with a drawback or two. Take the recent changes to revenue splits. Some felt that this was a step in the right direction, but given that the new program comes with a bunch of boxes that need? to be ticked, not everyone can benefit.

Now, there's a new feature that's being implemented, which could also be seen in a less-than-good light for most. According to a recent blog post, Twitch is introducing "Hype Chat," a feature ??that gives viewers the chance to literally buy chat messages. The idea behind it is to let users "stand out" in the overall chat.

[caption id="attachment_388337" align="aligncenter" width="572"]An example of Twitch's new Hype Chat feature. Image via Twitch.[/caption]

Am??ounts that can be paid for messages vary from $1 to $500 (though T??witch says that streamers can set a minimum amount up to $100). Depending on how much a viewer pays will depend on the duration of the pinned comment, as well as character length, and the visual design. All this while affording the person streaming the ability to "earn a share of the revenue from each Hype Chat purchase."

But, as usual, not everyone will get the benefit of this new feature. The blog post goes on to say that Hype Ch??at is only available to Partners, so smaller channels will miss out. However, the Amazon-owned service does say that it may look into implementing this "more broadly" in the future.

For some, though, it may be too little too late to win back support. With big streaming names like xQc and Amouranth already jumping ship to rival platform Kick, things are looking a bit tough for Twitch right now, though it should be noted that ??it is still pulling in millions of users each month.

A much needed update to Nightmare Dungeons

In their first Campfire Chat stream since release, members of the Diablo 4 development team sat down to highlight some big upcoming changes to popular action-RPG. The primary focus of the one and a half hour livestream was the near future of Diablo 4.

Let's be honest here: Diablo 4 end-game is in a weird spot right now. One of the biggest features, Nightmare Dungeons, is currently practically useless to do. In the current state of the game it's simply more efficient to spa??m run non-Nightmare versions of the dungeons for more experience and rewards. Thankfully, Blizzard has some changes in mind to make Nightmare Dungeons a more rewarding experience.

"We want them to be a great place to farm, including if you want to farm dungeons over and over. If you want to loop dungeons, Nightmare Dungeons are setup to be good at doing that," Diablo 4 game director Joe Shely stated. "So, what we're going to do there is where going to increase the amount of XP that you get from Nightmare Dungeons and our goal with this is to make Nightmare Dungeons more efficient to do than side dungeons. Be??cause, they are designed to be mo??re replayable."

This is a much needed change. It's not that players don't like Nightmare Dungeons. It's just that in their current state, they aren't worth doing. They also plan to change how the Nightmare Sigil's work. With the new system, using a Nig?htmare Sigil will open a wayp?oint at the Nightmare Dungeon it is for, allowing you to teleport directly to it. This will greatly reduce the downtime between running them, helping to improve their efficiency compared to standard side dungeons. They are hoping to have these changes implemented before the start of Season One.

Addressing the concerns of upcoming Seasons

It was originally stated that every Season will be a fresh start in Diablo 4. Understandably, fans have had some worries as to what that would entail. The idea of rediscovering the entire world map and finding all of the Altars of Lilith would not be fun each Season. This will no longer be the ??case, as they plan to make that progress carry over between seasons, as well as their renown reward. However, side quests, strongholds, and optional dungeon completions will reset each season, but may be changed in the future.

Furthermore, the devs confirmed each Season will bring new features and content, not just bug fixes. The plan is for Diablo 4 ??to evolve over time with each new Season release.

A few other important goals moving forward

Nightmare Dungeons and details about the upcoming Seasons were certainly the high??lights of the stream. But there were a few other important notes to discuss.

First off, they plan to roll out some changes to the invent?ory around the start of Season 2. Primarily, the plan is to ch??ange gem management in the inventory. The goal is to have them work more like materials, as opposed to taking up an inventory slot.

Also, they plan to implement some more social features to the game. Although they don't think these systems will?? be ready until later Seasons, they plan to eventually add the ability to jump into dungeons with random players.

Overall the Campfire Chat was promising and has me excited for the future of Diablo 4. The Nightmare Dungeon changes are exactly what players have been asking for, and it's great to see them willing to backtrack on resetting world map and Altar of Lilith progress. Season One should be a great opportuni??ty to try a new class!

And it's capped as well

Sometimes it's difficult to know what's going on at Twitch at any given time. On one hand, the streaming platform has made attempts to remove hate groups. On the other, it's also been embroiled in a series of controversies. This is especially true when it comes to the streamers?? themselves.

However, there is some good news on the horizon, as it turns out?? that the Amazon-owned company is increasing its revenue split, returning to the old 70/30 divide. The new program is being r??eferred to as "Partner Plus." But before you start celebrating, there are a few provisos.

According to a recent Twitch blog post, streamers will be entitled to a bigger share of the streaming pot earned so long as they "maintain a sub count of at least 350 recurring paid subscriptions for three consecutive months." This means the sub count cannot drop below this number for that period of time. To clear any questions on that front, a report from PC Gamer says that Amazon Prime subscriptions will not be counted, so only monthly and gifted subs will work.

//twitter.com/Twitch/status/1669383315558891525

Going into more detail, Twitch also says that Partner Plus will cap the new 70/30 split at $100,000 US over a 12-month period. Once these conditions are met, content creators will be a?utomatically enrolled in the program, which will come into effect on October 1, 2023. It's also worth noting that once you qualify, if your subscription count dips below the 350 sub threshold over the 12-month period, you will still be entitled to the split.

Twitch has notoriously had a difficult time pleasing streamers in the past, especially when it comes?? to money. The fact that you won't qualify for the Partner Plus scheme if you earn too much may seem bittersweet to some. There are probably a few famous names on the site that will automatically be discounte?d, but for the rest, it sounds like an opportunity to earn more of a lion's share. Providing you tick all the boxes, of course.

Serious injuries occur during 'Gladiator' game

Streaming site Twitch and PC merch manufacturer Lenovo came under fire this weekend, following a series of serious and devastating injuries that occurred at the former's live event TwitchCon 2022 The separately occurring accidents all took place at Lenovo's "foam pit", where attendees were taking part in pugilistic combat similar to that of '90s TV game show Gladiators.

The battles, which were live streamed? by Lenovo and other con attendees, saw players fight it out on small raised podiums placed above a "foam pit" ostensibly a large area filled with foam cubes to prevent the loser from injuring themselves when falling from said podiums. However, it appears that the pit was much shallower than it appeared, with no dismount assistance, which lead to several players severely injuring themselves when falling, jumping, or simply dropping down from their raised platform.

//twitter.com/adrianachechik/status/15790989477794??07877?s=20&t=KjK??gwbkdtnI8-hqjslwnTg

The worst incident took place on Sunday, when streamer and adult film star Adriana Chechik suffered a horrific back injury. Following her victory over streamer opponent EdyBot, Chechik did an excitable "ass-bump" into what appeared to be a deep swamp of? soft foam, but was, in fact, a fairly thin layer on a matted, hard floor surface. Immediately hurt, Chechik calls out for instant assis?tance, saying "I can't get up" while commentators jest and tell onlookers that the actor is, in fact, "ok".

Tragically, it turns out that Chechik had broken her back in two places on impact, and has since undergone surgery ??to implant a metal rod in her back to ??????????????????????????provide support.

"When it rains it pours and I am definitely feeling the rain right now." said Chechik on Twitter.

Soon after the news of Chechik's accident broke, it became apparent that numerous other injuries had taken place before her own. EdyBot said that she hurt for the rest of the day following her loss to Chechik. Another streamer, LochVaness, actually dislocated her knee while dismounting the platform, while another unconfirmed image shows what appears to be a woman in great pain, her ankle in a soft cast this photo was reportedly taken during a separate "balloon-catching" game.

//twitter.com/loch??_vaness/status/1579165914670374912?s=20&t=KjKgwbkdtnI8-hqjslwnTg

These testimonies have, of course, led to utter bewilderment on the part of attendees as to why the foam pit remained open following these earlier injuries, ultimately allowing the circumstances which led to Chechik's incident. Furthermore, attendees have claimed that the pit remained open even after Chechik was injured, though a statement to Kotaku suggests that the feature was eventually closed.

"We are aware of the incidents of TwitchCon? visitors who sustained injuries in the gladiato??r game soft foam pit at the Lenovo booth," said Twitch in the statement. "The area has since been closed for any further use while we work with event organizers to look into the incidents."

While attendees had reportedly signed a waiver for injury before entering the Lenovo foam pit, the constant string of worsening accidents, combined with the decision not to close down the attraction, may render said waivers moot in the eyes of legal teams. Hopefully, recompense can be doled out to those ??hurt during the weekend, especially to Chechik, whose incredibly minor action has ??had potentially life-changing consequences. Here's hoping for a strong, swift recovery for all those injured.

Another developer is joining the list of showcases set for next week. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, the developer behind the Yakuza and Judgment series, is hosting the RGG Summit 2??022 ??on September 14.

The RGG Summit will air on Sega's Twitch channel, going live at 19:00 JST?. That's 10:00 UTC, or 3:00 a.m. PT for those on the west coast. East coasters have it a lit??tle bit easier, with a 6 a.m. ET air time.

For those who are awake and tuned in, the stream will have live Eng??lish interpretation and subtitled assets for those outside of Japan.

//?twitter.com/RGGStudio/status/1567830960133099520

No indication's been given yet as to what will be announced. Though, given the recent tease of some footage from the next Yakuza, that seems like a likely candidate.

The studio has confirmed it's working on the next Yakuza game already. It will be a follow-up to Yakuza: Like a Dragon, and it will retain a turn-based RPG approach.

Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio will also be without Toshihiro Nagoshi, who left the company and has established Nagoshi Studio under NetEase. It'll be interesting to see what's next for Ichiban and the crew, and the Yakuza series in general, if we g??et a glimpse during the RGG Summi??t.

Summer's end gaming news blitz

That's far from the only showcase next week, too. Next week is the 2022 Tokyo Game Show, and companies like Capcom, Square Enix, and Bandai Namco are all lined up to air streams.

Xbox and Twitch are also airing a showcase next week for ID@Xbox, too. This weekend will even have a Marvel and Disney showcase, and an Ubisoft Forward. Plus, the ever-present rumors of a potential September Direct (which may or may not be happening, who's to say).

With the holiday seas??on just over the horizon, seems like we're getting one last wave of gaming news and announcements. We'll see what RGG Studio has in store next week.

Set to broadcast on February 17, the "All Aksys" stream will spotlight a number of incoming releases, with perhaps the brightest light shining on the rad-looking 2D fighter, Blazing Strike.

As we have previously reported, Aksys' Blazing Strike is a slick-looking smack-'em-up inspired by the Capcom and SNK classics of the '90s. With colorful, stylized pixel visuals, a rocking soundtrack, and a deep and complex fighting system, Blazing Strike hopes to recall grand memories of King of Fighters '98, Street Fighter III: Third Strike, lines of quarters? on arcade cabinets, and cigarette butts stubbed into garish carpets. It's looking pretty special, and I'??m definitely keeping an out for this release.

There will be several other titles showcased during the stream, all of which are for Nintendo Switch, and all of which hope to tweak the joy handles of anime and visual novel fans. Aksys will be offering up gameplay and details for several releases including Variable Barricade, Lover Pretend, Paradigm Paradox, Piofiore: Episodio 1926, and the yet-to-be-localized Kimi wa Yukima ni Koinegau. So even if you're a lover, rather th?an a fighter, it will be worth your time and effort to tune into the stream.

The All Aksys Showcase will be broadcast February 17 at 09:00 PT / 12:00 ET / 18:00 BST. You can check out the action over on Aksys Games official Twitch channel. And, of course, we'll be sure to bring you any particu??larly exciting details, trailers, or updates here on De??structoid.

'Groundbreaking' reveal coming Tuesday

Top-notch ?indie developer Yacht Club Games has announced that it will be holding its third "Yacht Club Games Presents" presentation on Tuesday??, February 1. The studio states that the show will feature exciting updates and an exciting and groundbreaking "mega announcement."

"You've been patient and we've been hard at work!" said the studio in a blog post. "We're proud to announce that the 3rd official Yacht Club Games Presents will be host?ed on G4’s Twitch channel. We’ll be focusing on a selection of games that have brand new content cu??rrently in development! We also have a hair-raisingly exciting MEGA ANNOUNCEMENT! You do not want to miss this historic event!"

Historic? Groundbreaking? Mega? It certainly sounds like the Shovel Knight developer has something pretty mighty up its sleeve. While it would be very easy to leap to the conclusion that Yacht Club is preparing to reveal a Shovel Knight sequel, there is a lot of interesting entendre at play here. "Groundbreaking" suggests a possible team-up, but also references the act of digging itself, "Mega" has connotations with Mega Man, which ??is a key in?fluence in the YCG world. It's quite the riddle.

Or maybe my meds just haven??'t kicked in and I'm looking w?ay too deeply into all of this.

Either way, it's sure to be an exciting reveal. If you want to check it out live, then tune in to the G4TV Twitch channel on Tuesday, February 1 at 14:00 PT / 17:00 ET / 23:00 BST to catch all of the hot scoops. And if you can't make it, then sweat ye not, as we'll be sure to bring you the lowdown right here on Destructoid. In the meantime, maybe check out the great Shovel Knight: Pocket Dungeon, w?hich is now available on PS4, PC, and Nintendo ??Switch.

Sad Emote

Twitch has posted a new statement concerning last week's major site hack, which saw the entirety of the streaming service's website including its infrastructure, dev tools, and pay records laid bare as a public torrent file. Having conducted an investigation, Twitch is saying that user passwords and p?ayment info should not be considered at risk.

"Twitch passwords have not been exposed," reads the statement. "We are also confident that systems that store Twitch login credentials, which are hashed with bcrypt, were n?ot accessed, nor were full credit card numbers or ACH / bank information."

"The exposed data primarily contained documents from Twitch’s source code repository, as well as a subset of creator payout data. We’ve undergone a thorough review of the information included in the files exposed and are confident that it only affected a s?mall fraction of users and the customer impact is minimal.??"

The hack, believed to have taken place on Monday, October 11, came about after an infiltrator made their way inside Twitch's walls during a server switchover. Among the data dump that subsequently appeared online was Partner pay records, Twitch.tv's desktop and mobile builds, associated Twitch properties, and even unreleased projects such as a "Steam-style" dashboard created by Amazon Game Studios. Twitch has since suggested that the hack was perpetrated by a "malicious third party," though no further? details to the hacker's identity have been released.

Regardless of the above statement, it is probably wise for users to change their passwords and switch out their stream keys regardless better to be safe than sorry, etc. The hack 'n' dump of Twitch is, frankly, one of the biggest video game stories of 2021. It's momentous. Yet I can't help but feel it's already becoming yesterday's news, destine??d like so many headlines to be forgotten by next month, despite being one of the biggest security breaches in internet history.

Hopefully a foot-stompin' good time

[Update: Today's livestream is?????????????????????????? over, and while we didn't get any news on a date, we did some pretty early lo??oks at development. Motive walked us through some early gameplay and its "dismemberment gym," while confirming a few points:

  • The Dead Space remake has overhauled zero-G movement, taking inspiration from Dead Space 2's thrusters.
  • Weapon-limb interactions have been overhauled, so picking apart Necromorphs looks as gruesome as ever.
  • There will be no microtransactions.
  • Gunner Wright returns as the voice of Isaac—with some special rules in place for Isaac's dialogue in the remake.

Our original story follows:]

Today, we're getting a first look at an early development build of EA Motive's upcoming Dead Space remake. And, well, I'm certainly hoping for ?some ?creepy crawlers and limb-slicing blasters.

The stream goes live soon, at 1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT over on Motive's Twitch channel. We'll update the post here as ??news gets shown during the event.

The oft-rumored Dead Space remake was confirmed during this year's EA Play Live 2021, where it closed out the show with an eerie, atmospheric tone-setting trailer. A trailer that, of course,?? included Isaac Clarke's famous back-HUD.

Hopefully we get to see some gameplay during today's Dead Space remake livestream, though how far away this remake will be is still up in the air. A report from VentureBeat indicated that the cur?rent plan is for late 2022, though that obviously comes with a caveat: game development is a fickle thing, and COVID-19 has certainly exacerbated that in some ways. Any expectations on a date should wait on something off?icial from the studio itself.

That said, good lord, I'm excited about the prospect of some more Dead Space. The first two games were memorable parts of my gaming intake in the early 2010s, and after recently playing some Alien: Isolation for the ??first time, I'm in the mood for ??some space station-based horror.

We'll see what EA Motive has in store for the return of Isaac Clarke in today's Dead Space lives?tream. Let us know in the comments what you think of it!
