Over the decades, fans have asked numerous questions about Mario's origins as a character, actual plumbing abilities, and even about his last name, which we've previously answered just to get your brain high on very important knowledge. Sometimes, however, we get answers for questions nobody would ever think to ask, such as "Does Mario happen to have around 254 more brothers who are not fit to be in the game?". The answer is "Yes, and what a good guess!" Mario has ??exactly 254 more brothers.

Because of a recent tweet by Supper Mario Broth that revives a 2022 thread from BWGLite, many people are learning a strange little detail in Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels. The first Super Mario sequel has Luigi (who's just Mario with a different coat of paint that you can play as) and then 254 other iterations of Mario whose fashio??n ?sense they apparently did not vibe with.

This happened because there were only meant to be two playable character sprites: Mario, the one whose value started with "0", and Luigi, who started with "1". The game uses a "brother byte" to de??termine the brother we're playing as, but a byte holds 256 values in total, which resulted in over? two hundred unwanted Mario clones.

To me, if they were just different-colored sprites in a ??game, I'd see them as nothing more than cosmetics. But the game's code actually gave them names. Granted, most of those names are wacky number and letter mix-ups, but a rare few seem like they could've been picked by Mario's parents, such as Iolui and Uigiy. This detail makes this example of family erasure so much more heartbreaking.

//twitter.com/MarioBrothBlog/status/1801616946837823790

If you'd like to see wha??t these brothers would look like in classic '80s Mario art style, then you'll probably be happy to learn that BWGLite went through the trouble of illustrating them all:

//twitter.com/BWGLite/status/1609065238506229760

Sadly, there's no mention of any datamining effort discovering similar sprites in any of the other Mario games. I'll just choose to believ?e that every single one of Mario's brothers that Nintendo didn't see as f??it for plumbing have since moved to a mushroom farm where they are all very happy and alive.

?Join us next time to learn if Bowser has a lea?ner and meaner brother called Wowser.

Block Brothers

One year on from the product's initial release, The LEGO Group and Nintendo are finally bringing the (previously leaked) Luigi to the LEGO Super Mario range. Arriving Augus?t 1, LEGO Luigi can be synced up with both his brother and all previously released LEGO Super Mario sets for new adventures and cutesy two-player action.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYt1v5_mSf8

A new advertisement starring two talented children with far more energy than I ever had shows the siblings working in tandem. The ad also features a lot of highly ambitious dancing, which seems to provide a veil for the fact that the LEGO sets don't actually do very much. The c??ommercial ends with the official reveal of a cool new playset, which is a recreation of Bowser's Airship. Check out LEGO Magikoopa! That's fun.

The not-just-interactive but "super interactive" figurines can be used in cooperative play to gather extra coins via a variety of in-game actions. Players can attempt new set-based challenges, defeating enemies to earn extra rewards. The Luigi figurine does look a little different to his brother, sporting a different mustache and a slightly elongated head, but unfortunately, there's no sign of a Luigi's Mansion playset just y?et, which feels like a missed opportunity, but fingers crossed.

In related news, the first LEGO Con live stream will take place on June 26.

Several notable Mario games are 35 percent off this week

With Nintendo still pledging to stop selling "Mario 35th anniversary celebration" games like Super Mario 3D All-Stars at the end of March, our attention is elsewhere in the Mushroom Kingdom this month, but it wouldn't be MAR10 Day – March 10 – without several discounts on "Mario games" for Switch.

If you're in the mood for a Mario romp – or want to show your support for Luigi instead – the following Nintendo Switch titles are discounted until March 13 at 11:59 pm Pacific on the Nintendo eShop:

35 percent off during a ??35th anniversary? You lucked out on this one, Nintendo.

Strangely, Super Mario Odyssey – arguably the best Mario adventure in a good long time – isn't a part of Nintendo's MAR10 Day eShop sale. That said, Amazon and Walmart have it for $38.88 right now.

You can make a case for any of these games, especially Luigi's Mansion 3 and Mario Maker 2, but I'll add that Super Mario Party is a real I-guess-I'll-get-i??t-at-that-price sort of jam. Go in expecting that the game is what it is – there won't be content updates – and cook some meat cubes. The mini-games are fun, just don't forget that you ??need a Joy-Con for every player since Pro Controllers are prohibited.

Me? I'm too busy ignoring Super Mario 3D World in favor of Bowser's Fury.

It sounds like this is it

It looks like we aren't getting any solo DLC for Luigi's Mansion 3. I'm kind of bummed, but what are you going to do? Next Level Games seem to have their priorities straight, and recently spoke to Kotaku about how the decision came to be to focus entirely on multiplayer.

As creative director Bryce Holliday pints out, despite the fact that "most people" want a campaign ?focus when initially buying the game, Next Level, as a studio, loves making multiplayer games, calling them the "experiences we wanted to share." Holliday also feels like adding solo content "might break up the flow of the game" as the story has a clear structure to it and a conclusive finale.

Immediately ?after reading this I thought "well what ??about a second location?" Holliday read my mind, noting difficulties with development, specifically time constraints. He says that despite some pressure from Nintendo to develop a solo DLC, the notion "faded quickly," especially after they pitched their multiplayer concepts.

Expect those costumes and minigames to appear soon enough: the two packs will arrive in April and July. I'll give them a whirl, but I h?ope they're far more expansive than the ones included in the base game.

Luigi's Mansion and Mario Maker were stars too

Nintendo has a lot of can't-miss properties to its name, and Pokémon is as bulletproof as they come. This is a series that prints money anytime a new game launches. That's proven yet again as Nintendo has revealed sales data for Pokémon Sword and Shield.

In its third quarter earnings release, Nintendo announces that Pokémon Sword and Shield predictably led the way in sales, racking up a cumulative 16.06 million units sold between its mid-November launch and the end of the 2019 calendar year. That's broken down between 4.21 million sales in Japan, and 11.85 million sales throughout the rest of the world. It's enough for Nintendo to single out the new Pokémon, calling it a "huge hit."

Sword and Shield actually fared a bit better than the previous Pokémon, Sun and Moon, did during its launch quarter. Sun and Moon combined for 14.69 million copies sold on 3DS; it currently sits at 16.18 million sales, meaning that Sword and Shield has quite possibly surpassed Sun and Moon's lifetime sales once January's total is? figured in.

Nintendo also seems pleased with some of its high-profile games during the holiday quarter. Luigi's Mansion 3 (5.37 million sales) and Super Mario Maker 2 (5.04 million sales) both got shoutouts for their performance. The Link's Awakening remake weighed in at 4.19 million sales, which Nintendo might consider underwhelming for a new Zelda?? game, e?ven one as relatively niche as this one.

Elsewhere, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe keeps trucking along, as it was the second-best seller of the quarter, racing to another 6.27 million sales; its lifetime total is now at 22.96 million. Impressive when considering that the original Mario Kart 8 on Wii U has 8.44 million sales to its name. Other newcomers to Nintendo's vaunted one million sales list are: Fire Emblem: Three Houses (2.58 million), Ring Fit Adventure (2.17 million), Astral Chain (1.03 million), and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 (1.02 million).

Who you gonna call?

This Christmas season is, in some places, traditionally a time for ghost stories, but if you have ??one too many of the spooky-ookies floating around your manor, then perhaps you need one of these nifty Poltergusts, as designed by the ??talented team at Volpin Props.

As used by your boy Luigi in the Luigi's Mansion t??itles, the Poltergust G-00 is a powerful suction device that allows for the swift ??- if chaotic - removal of ghosts, spiders, and other creepy creatures from every nook and cranny. Unfortunately, the Volpin Props model doesn't appear to have genuine ghost bustin' capabilities, but still, you have to love the meticulous attention to detail and slick design of this smart replica.

Luigi's Mansion 3 is available now on Nintendo Switch.

Coming in 2020

Have you enjoyed your time with Luigi's Mansion 3? The winner of this year's Best Family Game at The Game Awards -- and one of the nominees for Destructoid's Best Switch Game of 2019 -- has been a huge success since it first launched on Halloween. I love it. Our community loves it. Chrissy Teigen loves it. It's just a ?love-fest all around ?for Luigi's latest, and easily greatest, ghost-hunting adventure.

That love looks like it'll continue to flow in 2020. As previously announced, Luigi's Mansion 3 will be getting paid DLC for its ScareScraper and ScreamPark modes. Nintendo was mum on exactly what this additional content wo??uld be, but today it pulled back the curtain on the the f??irst part of its multiplayer pack.

I am living and breathing for Disco Luigi.

Arriving by April 30, 2020, part one will include ??three new costumes for Luigi in the Sc??areScraper mode along with three new floor themes to match. ScreamPark will also be getting three new games, but we'll have to wait until later to find out exactly what they are. Part two of the multiplayer pack is expected to launch by July 31, 2020 and will bring with it three more costumes, floors themes, and mini-games.

For anyone who does drop a Hamilton on the DLC set??, they'll receive access to the Flashlight Type-P in the single-player campaign that replaces Luigi's normal flashlight with one that shines Polterpup's face.

This ain't no Holiday Inn

In 2014, Next Level Games announced it would be working with Nintendo exclusively on its future projects. For fans of its games, the move made sense. Next Level Games has a rich history of creating outstanding products with Nintendo at its side, but on its own or working with other publishers, it's actually put out some pretty awful titles. Nintendo and Next Level Games is a partnership that works, and there is no better example of the boundless creativity of their collaboration than Luigi’s Mansion 3.

Luigi's Mansion 3 review - Destructoid

Luigi's Mansion 3 (Nintendo Switch)
Developer: Next Level Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: October 31, 2019
MSRP: $59.99

After having to trek through dirty, dingy, and dangerous mansions in his previous two outings, Luigi has earned himself a vacation. Traveling with Mario, Peach, a couple of Toads, and his beloved Polterpup, Luigi heads to the country for some rest and relaxation at The Last Resort, a massive hotel that glistens with gold and is completely free of cobwebs. Unfortunately for Luigi and the rest of his crew, this ??won’t be a restful vacation as it’s quickly revealed that Hellen Gravely, the proprietor of this establishment, is working with art-aficionado King Boo to once again trap his enemies in paintings. After discovering the new Poltergust G-00 and freeing a captured Professor E. Gadd, Luigi sets out to find his friends and catch any ghosts that float in his way.

Only this time, he doesn’t have to do it alone. Not long into the story, E. Gadd upgrades the G-00, giving Luigi access to Gooigi. This gives players the option of turning this single-player adventure into a couch co-op experience. You have the choice of limiting your control options by splitting the Joy-Con for co-op or the second player can join with their own controller. While the addition of Gooigi to the Luigi's Mansion mythos makes co-op an obvious inclusion, it's clear throughout the campaign this is designed to primarily be a single-player quest. Co-op is a welcomed addition, sure, but not what I consider to be the ideal way to experience Luigi's Mansion 3.

Both Luigi and Gooigi have access to the same tools of the Poltergust, including the suck and blow features, the Strobulb, the dark light, the suction shot, the burst, and the slam attack. The latter three tools are new for Luigi’s Mansion 3 a??nd are essential to defeating the different types of ghosts you’ll encounter. Some protect themselves with shields, others wear their sunglasses at night. Knowing which tool is required for the right situation will keep you from losing too much health as you find your way through this wretched resort. They’re also necessary for solving the many inventive puzzles the developers have cooked up. Most puzzles give players unlimited chances to solve them, but a choice few result in instant death if you’re unable to find the solution in time.

The layout of The Last Resort is Next Level Games’ attempt at combining the singular location of the original Luigi’s Mansion with the variety of the mini-mansions found in Dark Moon on the 3DS. While many of the floors are typical of what you’d see in a posh and luxurious hotel -- a gym, a shopping center, a nightclub, etc. -- a few defy logic and physics in their design and inclusion. Not only does this hotel house its own miniature desert, but in that desert is an entire pyr??amid complete with hidden tombs. Couple that with a pir?ate’s grotto, museum, movie studio, and castle, and this hotel starts to feel like one of those motels with the themed rooms, only with a much bigger design budget.

What’s nice is these massiv??e themed areas?? aren’t all grouped together. The structure of this hotel keeps it varied with these extraordinary stages sandwiched between the more standard floors. Most of these locales are 100% on point in design and execution, though some I feel are better ideas on paper than in practice. The aforementioned pirate’s grotto doesn’t offer much in the way of exploration, resulting in one of the shorter floors in the game’s 15-hour campaign.

However, just because it’s over in a flash doesn’t mean it’s easy to forget. In fact, the shorter stages make up for their lack of length with brilliant puzzles and some wonderfully designed boss battles. In particular?, the fights at the end of the pirate's grotto and movie studio floors are without a doubt the most entertaining boss bouts I've encountered all year. The same rings true for most of the boss fights here as they either excel in their design and theatrics or in how well they test the player’s competency with the tools at Luigi’s disposal. There are a few misses, such as the ghost you fight at the end of the desert stage, but for the most part, these fights are above and beyond anything the series has seen before.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Above and beyond is actually a great way to describe most of Luigi’s Mansion 3. Nearly everything the franchise has done in the past, it does better. A giant hotel isn’t as intimate as the mansion in the GameCube original, but the amount of detail found in these haunted halls is unrivaled. From its most basic areas to its most extravagant, there isn’t a spot in this place that isn’t exceptionally decorated with bespoke lighting that gives credence to Luigi’s unease about this whole situation. Interactivity has always been a key component of the Luigi’s Mansion experience and it’s no? different here. Nearly every piece of décor you encounter holds a second purpose. Some will grant you money, others are to be used in the puzzles and secrets scattered around the hotel.

The best details, however, are found in the character animations. While E. Gadd can be a bit unsettling to look at in HD, Next Level Games is putting the power of the Switch to good use with how it injects humor into the movements and facial expressions of Luigi, the Toads, Polterpup, Hellen Gravely, and every other spirit bound to this hotel. If you found the Possessors of Dark Moon lacking personality, the staff and guests?? of The Last Resort have it in spades.

Beyond that immaculate animation, credit must be given to long-time voice actor Charles Martinet. While Luigi still doesn’t talk in complete sentences or utter anything more complicated than a three-syllable word, Martinet&rsq??uo;s delivery of every scream, shout, sigh, sniffle, and shriek showcases a talent that has not only confidently settled into this role but is also having an absolute gas with the variety of vocal expressions this series allows him.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Martinet’s voice work only becomes more charming when there are four Luigis sharing the stage in the ScareScraper. Returning from Dark Moon, ScareScraper?? is an online multiplayer mode where ??up to four Luigis work together to clear randomized floors of a five- or ten-floor tower. Each floor has its own objective like catching all the ghosts or saving all the Toads and a time limit it must be completed in. In addition to those tasks, each floor houses a bevy of secrets that can reward players with money, more time on the clock, or special tools they can use on that floor.

If there is any aspect of Luigi's Mansion 3 that pales in comparison to prior entries, it's the lack of options in the ScareScraper. You can play locally or online in co-op or solo, but without a difficulty selector, true solo play is basically a non-starter. The mode does not adj??ust its challenge to how many players are attempting to complete it, so without a team of Luigis to pick up the slack, it will be difficult for people to clear a single floor by themselves, let alone an entire tower.

While ScareScraper options are more limited here than in its original incarnation, the fun factor remains near identical. Teaming up with four people online to hunt ghosts is an exhilarating experience. Without voice chat, I had to use button prompts to alert my fellow Luigis if som?ething was wrong or I needed them to come join me. The system worked well enough if my teammates were actually paying attention. Even when we failed, and during this review period we failed in all but one instance to reach the top of the t??ower, I was ready to go again because of how much I was enjoying myself.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Not only is the ScareScraper the best online multipl??ayer experience I’ve had all year, it was also a near-flawless one as the framerate barely budged during the time I was able to test it out with three other players. The only time I distinctly remember a drop of any kind was when the four of us were in a room filled with? mini ghosts and two of us had our Gooigis out. But even in that moment, the slowdown lasted only a few seconds before everything was back to being smooth as butter, which is a great relief given Nintendo’s uneven history with online gameplay.

The big new addition to the Luigi’s Mansion series is the multiplayer ScreamPark mode, but the less said about it, the better. Unlike the ScareScraper, this mode supports up to eight p??layers -- four Luigis and four Gooigis. While this could make for an interesting party game experience, none of the included minigames are deserving of anything more than a slight glance. Coin Float is something that should only be played to prepare you for one of the more irritating boss battles in the main campaign. Cannon Barrage needs a minimum of four players to be even remotely fun. And Ghost Hunt is pretty much just a simplified version of the ScareScraper. More minigames are on the way with upcoming paid DLC, but unless bots are added, I don't see myself visiting the ScreamPark again.

The Luigi’s Mansion franchise has come a long way since the original was criticized over its lack of content. With an absorbing single-player campaign and a Scarescraper that still packs a punch, Luigi’s Mansion 3 is the most content-rich entry in the series, and one of the best times I've had with? my Switch in 2019.

Gooigi-spin

Continuing its use of Tetris 99 to advertise the newest first-party games coming to the Switch, Nintendo has announced a Luigi's Mansion 3 Tetris Maximus Cup for this weekend. The event will run from Friday, October 25 through M?onday, October 28.

Like previous Tetris 99 cups before it, the eighth Maximus Cup will be a competition to see who can obtain the most points in the allotted time. Players obtain points based on wher?e they finish in the ?battle royale, ranging from 1 to 100 each match.

As was the case with prior cups, any players who score a cumulative total of 100 points get to keep the Luigi's Mansion 3 theme for future use. Nintendo of Japan dropped a preview of the theme in action and it's pretty great. After the boisterous Fire Emblem: Three Houses one in the sixth Maximus Cup, I'm glad to see Nintendo continuing the trend of ??more subdued themes that don't take away from the game.

Tetris 99 is available now for the Switch via the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service. Luigi's Mansion 3 will release on October 31.

If you wanna go faster

Have we seen the entirety of Luigi's Mansion 3 via gameplay videos now? Well, probably not, but Nintendo certainly hasn't been shy when it comes to showing off extended segments of action taken from the Switch spook 'em up.

This latest video, titled "ScreamPark," focuses on three multiplayer modes headed to the game, which will see Luigi and his jello-loving pal Gooigi take time out from exploring the dank corridors of the haunted hotel to engage in a little friend?ly competit?ion. Each mode supports up to four players and offers added attraction to complement the game's story mode.

"Ghost Hunt" is a race against time where each player must capture as many ghoulies as possible in a creepy cemetery. Special ghosts offer big bonuses, so keep an eye out for those. "Cannon Barrage" sees players team up to take down a series of targets, using slick teamwork to gather cannonballs, load, aim and fire the cannon, watch out for your opponents trying to wreck your flow though! Finally, "Coin Floating," perhaps the weirdest fit, sees Luigi and friends paddle around a swimming pool, gathering coins and avoiding floating mines... Was that one just a left over from Super Mario Party or something?

The first five floors of The Last Resort

Despite its faults, I will always look back on my time with the original Luigi's Mansion fondly. After being forced to play as Luigi for years as my older brother would always get to be first player, it was nice to see Nintendo put him in a game of his own; one full of personality and ghostly characters that felt as though they had a long, family history. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon got r?id of a lot of that personality, replacing ??it with more -- specifically, more mansions, more variety, and more replay value.

In my discussions with Luigi's Mansion fans, I've found many have a strong preference for either game, some favoring the characterization of the first while others go for the wonderful Scarescrape mode of the sequel. It'll be interesting to see what these groups think of Luigi's Mansion 3 when they get their hands on it at the end of the month. Becau??se it's shaping up to be the best of both worlds and so much more.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Things go south for Luigi and company pretty quickly at the beginning of Luigi's Mansion 3. After checking into The Last Resort -- a posh and isolated hotel he's staying at with Mario, Peach, and a couple of Toads -- Luigi quickly discovers this resort is all a ruse. The ghosts he valiantly caught in Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon are on the loose, with big baddie King Boo looking to make the entire Mario clan the latest entries in his ?art collection. After narrowly escaping down a laundry chute, Luigi finds a hidden Poltergust G-00 and sets off to do what he does best: wrecking the shit out of a building like it's demolition day on a home improvement show.

The first five floors of The Last Resort don't feature any of the themed decor later floors do, but this hotel is one exquisitely designed building. The opening sequence when everything is bright and sunny is extraordinary and perfectly sets up how dark and twisted it becomes once night rolls around. The elegant lobby transforms into a vexing vestibule, the rooms turn into crime scenes, and t??he haughty hallways become haunted by ghosts and the serie?s most creepy-looking spiders to date.

To deal with the creepy crawlers, alive or otherwise, Luigi has a set of new tools he can use to defeat them. The Polterguist G-00 retains the abilities from Dark Moon, including suck and blow features, the Strobulb, and the dark light. New to the G-00 are the suction shot that is used mostly in puzzle solving, the burst which allows Luigi to jump, and the slam attack he can use to pulverize ghosts like he's the Hulk at the end of Avengers. Also new is Gooigi, returning from the 3DS remake of Luigi's Mansion

Luigi's Mansion 3

In two-player mode, the second player can take control of Gooigi as the players work together to advance through the game. Now, I am going through the campaign solo right now -- I will be giving co-op a shot for the final review -- and I'm interested to see how some of the situations are handled. Because while Gooigi so far has mostly been used for light puzzle-solving and accessing areas Luigi can't squeeze through, there is also one battle against a hilarious Paul Blart-esque mall cop in the hotel's shopping sec??tion that could only be done as Gooigi. How this w??orks with two players, I don't know.

That boss battle is far the best I've encountered and it's another example of how the developers are injecting genuinely good comedy throughout. This is a funny game and that humor rests on the shoulders of the character animators who are clearly putting the power of the Switch to good use. One of the most compelling aspects of the Luigi's Mansion series is how the developers have utilized the available technology to give Luigi a personality through his actions, voice, and facial expressions. In 3, Next Level Games is taking Luigi far beyond what we've seen him d?o before, infu??sing his reactions with movements that would fit right in with a Buster Keaton comedy.

Progress through the Hotel hasn't been as simple as you might expect it to be. Various ghosts, mostly the boss characters, have taken the floor buttons to the elevator and hidden them on their used-to-be persons. Those buttons are not recovered in any sort of order and you jump around from floor to floor as you explore. Areas not accessible earlier in the game become urgent destinations once you unlock certain tools in your Poltergust G-00. There is ??always a reason to return at least once to a floor you've already conquered.

Luigi's Mansion 3

Like with the previous two games, Luigi's Mansion 3 isn't just about catching ghosts. It's also about getting filthy rich. Every room in the building is loaded with coins, cash, and gold bars with special critters scattered throughout that reward you heavily if you manage to suck them up into your Poltergust. Looting th??????????????????????????e crap out of each room might seem like it would get tiresome, but it's actually a great way to discover hidden puzzles. The Last Resort is full ?of secrets and I'm routinely rewarded for experimenting with my vacuum thingamajig in each room I enter. These puzzles, along with hidden gems and hidden boos, provide a great reason to explore every nook and cranny of this hotel.

There are still so many floors for me to see and ghosts to catch, as well as the Scarescraper and Screampark multiplayer modes. Expect to find out about all that and more when the full review of Luigi's Mansion 3 hits later this month.

There's something strange in the neighbourhood

Nintendo Japan has released a lengthy trailer taking a look at the upcoming spook-fest Luigi's Mansion 3, which i??s heading to Switch in time for the creepiest night of them all, Halloween.

The n?ear-six minute video features a little bit of background plot as to the events of Luigi's?? latest ghostbustin' adventure, followed by gameplay highlighting some of the haunted hotel's locations, puzzles and, of course, ghoulish denizens. Fortunately, Luigi isn't alone on this journey, as he will be helped out by his delicious looking jelly friend, Gooigi, who can be controlled by a second player for co-op action

You can check out the new footage below, although fa??ns eager to get in on the action might want to stay spoiler-free. There's not too m??uch longer to go until release day, after all.

October 2019: The Month of Our Lord

All the wa?y back in 2013 Nintendo held?? a really fun, really oddball event for one of gaming's biggest oddballs: Luigi.

It was quite simply called "The Year of Luigi" and soared above mere meme status, as Nintendo actually gave us a ton of Luigi-centric games (most of them are good) like New Super Luigi U, Dr. Luigi, and Luigi Bros. remixes. They even extended the festivities through 2014!&nbs??p;In all, it ran from January 1, 2013 through March 18, 2014.

Previously known as the "SuperMario_UK" account, the description has morphed into "Welcome to Super Luigi’s official UK & Ireland Twitt??er," and Luigi has taken over. It's? not quite "Year of Luigi" stakes antics, but the account is celebrating the character with retrospectives of sorts, as well as looks back on the "Year" event itself and Luigi facts.

Enough time has passed wher??e Nintendo could feasibly do a "Year of" for another iconic character and not have it look desperate. Hopefully we get a typically unloved stable member next, like Fox or Samus.

Remember when he DIED during that Direct?

Saving one of the coolest videos for the end of the Gamescom week, Nintendo has released a near 30-minute gameplay overview for its spooky sequel, Luigi's Mansion 3, coming to Switch on? October 31; Hallow?een, suitably enough.

In the video, we get to see the greener Mario Brother make his way through a new locale filled with ghosts, ghoulies and other weird creatures. Armed with his trusty Poltergust, Luigi has a range of moves and abilities that?? can be used to adapt the environment around him to help him on his way. Here in the botanical gardens, Luigi enc??ounters a flower-watering custodian, and uses the light from his torch to cause plants to bloom into cascades of coins.

Not alone on his supernatural quest, Luigi is joined later in the video by his jelly-like doppelganger Gooigi, as Luigi's Mansion 3 shows off some of its co-op multiplayer gameplay. The video is presided over by hosts, which blocks the sound and immersion somewhat, but it's a safe bet to suggest that Luigi's Mansion 3 is looking good, and sure to recreate the fun of the GameCube and 3DS cl??assics.

Luigi's Mansion 3 launches on Nintendo Switch October 31.

No, not Tax Day

Most of Nintendo's release calendar was set in stone at E3 this year, with its biggest titles of the show getting comfortable release dates throughout 2019 and into March of next year. The one exception was Luigi's Mansion 3, the Next Level Games-developed threequel to Nintendo's wonderful Mario haunted house spin-off. We knew it was coming in 2019, it didn't get pushed into 2020 like Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but we didn't know exactly when it would be playable o?n our Switch consoles.

Now we do. Nintendo confirmed this morning Luigi's Mansion 3 will launch on October 31, 2019.

There really isn't any other day it would be right to release this game. Jordan Devore previewed it at E3, calling it a "gooey good time." I was able to test the demo at the show this year as well and as someone who did finish Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon -- the shade is real, Devore -- I believe this might be the best Luigi's Mansion yet.

It's not Nintendo's best series, but I'm happy it exists

Is there anything better than Luigi's scaredy-cat whimpers? Yeah, maybe – but not much! E3 2019 was my reminder that Luigi's Mansion is a good, wholesome, unlikely series worth supporting. This year, Nintendo's ghost-bustin' action-adventure franchise tiptoes onto Switch with Luigi's Mansion 3.

What's new? Plunger attacks! In a move straight out of QuackShot Starring Donald Duck, Luigi can fire a plunger onto a ghost (say their shield) or an object in the secret-rich environment (say a monstrous melon) and then yank the thing around.? The move was satisfying to pull off in the demo, and I get the impression it'll continue to feel that way throughout the full game. It's got that Nintendo touch.

The other focal point of note for Nintendo's E3 demo was Gooigi, who isn't wholly new to Luigi's Mansion 3, but seems to be a bigger focus this t??ime around. He's Luigi, albeit made of ??green goo.

The man of the hour, Gooigi

Yep, that's our boy. Plea?se take a moment to consider the sticky noi?ses he makes when he walks.

Gooigi hates water, but he loves helping you through familiar (but still perfectly adequate) puzzle scenarios that revolve around two playable characters working together to progress. You might send Gooigi through spike traps or team up with him to tug a particularly heavy obstacle aside. A click of the right thumbstick let's you swap back and forth between the duo, and if you're playing Luigi's Mansion 3 in local co-op, your partner can take charge of our cowardly hero's ??gooey doppelganger.

Pr??essed for time, I wasn't able to test out story co-op or the up-to-eight-player ScareScraper mode (in which you scour floors for Toads to rescue and apparitions to dispatch whil??e under a time limit).

I was able to slam a bunch of ghosts around after blinding them and reeling them in, and sucking up stray money with the Poltergust is still oddly compelling. The level on display was a castle-themed locale, but the scenery in Luigi's Mansion 3 will vary quite a bit – it's set in a twisted, towering hotel.

My favorite bit was a fortified jousting boss that fit the medieval theme and required me to vacuum up fallen armor chunks before he could reclaim them. It was a nifty little battle, perfect for a quick demo.

It's too early to tell if Luigi's Mansion 3 will make good on prior criticisms concerning samey enemy designs (see: the first thing CJ asked me about when I told him I saw the game at ??E3), but it sure put a smile on my face. That might not be a compelling enough reason to go all-in, but I'm listening.

I didn't finish Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on 3DS, but I feel like Luigi's Mansion 3 won't suffer the same fate. Part of that is just having the game playable on Switch the 3DS was never my go-to platform of choice, if I'm being honest and part of th?at is, well, timing. ?(I hope.) I'm crossing my fingers that Nintendo releases this in a slow month, preferably away from other more zeitgeist-y games.

Worst-case ??scenario, I'll get around to this eventually for my beloved Polterpup.

These lights are not my friends

Luigi's Mansion games are not really known for being scary. Sure, they may have a few jump scares scattered throughout their haunted halls, but Resident Evil they ain't. If anythin??g, the series is wha??t you'd get if you could "play" Disneyland's Haunted Mansion ride.

However, at E3 this year, Nintendo set up a massive hotel-themed demo booth for Luigi's third ghostly game and managed to create something so frightening, so revolting that I cannot in good conscience recommend anyone else visit the booth for the rest of the convention. Because if you do, you just end up in a catatonic sta?te when you see the eldritch tragedy that is me under a dark light.

I apologize for e????xposing you all to this monstrosity, and by monstrosity, I mean a guy who looks like a parent chaperone at a rave.

I ain't scared of no ghost

If 2013 was the Year of Luigi, 2019 is the Year of Gooigi. When Luigi's Mansion 3 launches on Switch later this year, Goo?igi will be a big part of the puzzle s??olving.

During this morning's E3 Direct, Nintendo revealed that Gooigi's back to help Luigi clean up the hotel. He's a goo clone, able to clip through cracks and walk over spikes. Basically anything that would hur??t flesh but won't hurt a gelatinous pile of goop.

This isn't Gooigi's first appearance. He was introduced in the 3DS remake of Luigi's Mansion. Clearly a hit, now he's back.

Nintendo confirmed a few more Luigi's Mansion 3 features. The Poltergust G-00 has some new functionality. There are ghost sla?ms, a plunger attachment for smashing furniture, and an area of effect burst attack. Also, there's a four-player mulitplayer mode called ScareScraper.

The haunting happens before long. Luigi's Mansion 3&nb??sp;will release sometime in 2019 on?? Nintendo Switch.

I ain't afraid of no boo

I'd go far as saying the GameCube is the best cube-shaped electronic device with a handlebar of all time. With it came the launch title that would put Luigi back into the spotlight once more after nearly a decade since Mario is Missing.

Finally, he'd have a game bearing his name and one that had him busting boos with a literal vacuum. Overall, it was a huge departure from the platforming roots the Mario series had become so well known for and the GameCube would only continue to cement the versatility of Ninte??ndo's cast of? characters.

Nearly two decades later and we're returning to the mansion once again at the tail-end of the 3DS's lifespan in what is a surprisingly updated and modified version ??from developer Grezzo. This updated version includ??es new visuals, quality of life improvements, and even a couple of other surprises that make the trip worthwhile for both fans of the original and newcomers alike.

Luigi's Mansion 3DS review

Luigi's Mansion (3DS)
Developer: Grezzo
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: October 12, 2018
MSRP: $39.99

Luigi's ghastly tale?? is a fairly simple one and ?it begins after winning a mansion from a contest he never entered. Soon after, he heads over to the mansion to meet up with Mario, only to discover his brother isn't anywhere to be found. That isn't to say the mansion is empty, though, because soon enough Luigi finds himself fending off ghoulish spirits with a tricked-out vacuum.

After acquiring the Poltergust 3000 f??rom Professor E. Gadd, Luigi discovers his brother has been captured by King Boo and must rid the mansion of the boos, ghosts, and other foul creatures to save him. This classic tale and formula haven't changed in the 3DS version of the game. You'll still clear each room of its spooky inhabitants just as you did on the GameCube, but with some quality-of-life improvements that make the game a tad more enjoyable to play

Most notably, coins now take longer to vanish when hit by ghosts or when made flat by those pesky trap doors. In the original GameCube release, the animation for those trap doors squashing you, in general, would take longer than your coins would even stic??k around for. Making use of both screens of the 3DS, the Game Boy Horror, Professor E. Gadd's communicator and radar for invisible boos, is now assigned to the bottom touch screen. It can also now be controlled with the gyroscope ??or even with nifty touch controls on the bottom screen.

Even more unique to t??his release of the game, though, is local co-op. However, the second player isn't taking control ?of toad or Professor E. Gadd. No, instead they take control of an abomination known as "Gooigi," which is some sort of green, goo clone of Luigi that I honestly believe is some sort of eldritch horror not fit for a Nintendo game, but, here we are. On the topic of this specific release of the game though, as I mentioned it's not an exact port of GameCube release, but instead a heavily updated version utilizing both new and old assets.

Luigi's Mansion 3DS review

Even right from the start of the game, the design of the mansion has been slightly tweaked from the original GameCube release. Most opinions of the aesthetic changes will be pretty different from person to person, but I honestly think Grezzo did an incredible job with the new assets. The opening glimpse of the mansion i??s more imposing and dark compared to the original release, while lit areas within the mansion now have a warmer color palette overall.

But, not everything is for the better. Most notably, the frame rate tends to drop well below 30fps at times, and there are some additional load times between areas or events. Overall though, Luigi's Mansion looks fantastic on the 3DS, especially in person. The new aesthetic updates and texture work still look solid an?d comparable to the original GameCube release. But, you will still get a higher resolut??ion and sharper image on GameCube compared to the 3DS if you're rocking some component cables.

Luigi's Mansion 3DS comparison

However, if your 3DS supports it, this version of Luigi's Mansion now also boasts stereoscopic 3D. It never does anything really too crazy with the effect, but the added depth of field in the opening scenes and other areas of the game is a nice touch. So, if you're after that, it's there. Also, the spooky Nintendo start-up from the GameCube release is sadly not present in the 3DS version and that's upsetting to? probably me and me only.

Nitpicks aside (which is exactly what these are, minor nitpicks), the biggest issue I have with the 3DS version of Luigi's Mansion is simply the c-stick analog nub on the New 3DS just isn't a good replacement for the GameCube's c-stick controls. Whether you're controlling the flashlight or attempting to suck up various objects with? the Polter??gust 3000 -- it just feels clumsy and nowhere near as precise on the New 3DS's analog nub.

Luigi's Mansion 3DS review

It's even worse on older 3DS models without the analog nub, as these controls are instead assigned to the d-pad. So, you'll have to take your thumb off the left analog stick (and stop moving) to use the Poltergust 3000 or flashlight. If you're playing on an older 3DS, I highly recommend using the Circle Pad Pro if you have access to it?. You'd think the simple solution would be to use gyroscope aiming (like you do with the Game Boy Horror), oddly enough though, it's not really a viable control option for either the flashlight or Poltergust 3000 as you can only point up or down with the gyroscope.

Some technical and control issues aside, I still think the 3DS version of Luigi's Mansion is a solid option for newcomers or for people looking to revisit this GameCube classic. Catching various ghosts and completing Professor E. Gadd's gallery is a perfect time burner on the go and Grezzo have done a solid job bringing Luigi's Mansion to the 3DS. I just don't know if I'd?? prioritize p??laying the 3DS version over the GameCube version in the future.

Ask an grown-up to help though

The art of the Jack-o'-Lantern has really come into its own ?in recent years. When I was a wee nipper you banged in some triangles and you were done, time to go and eat toffee. But now, the internet is full of excellent examples of clever carving, as people adorn their candle-lit pumpkins with the faces of all sorts of pop-culture characters.

Nintendo, in a convenient bit of cross-promotion for the 3DS release of Luigi's Mansion, has released a template that you can print out, allowing you to carve the plumber-come-ghostbuster's terrified face into your own pumpkin, scaring away ghouls and paying tribute to the fact that Nintendo practically killed him earlier this year.

I'm not allowed knives anymore, but you can have a go if you fancy it. And if you do, be sure to post a picture here so we can all see your handicraft skills in action

The battle that could end video games as we know it!

That's right! Two men (and maybe a Sex T-Rex)! One stage! Only one surv?ivor! As well a??s today's video game news you need in all the right places:

  • KFC Gaming is just another sign we're in the worst timeline!
  • The Quiet Man still looks completely absurd!
  • Gooigi could be an eldritch horror and more!

Challengers to the throne come and go all the time, and this crudely drawn individual will be no different! What chance does this "Yahtzee" have against our own sleep-deprived and caffeine-addicted yellsman? Well, thankfully, I've done the math! I k??now Yahtzee's tricks! That silly Australian upsid?e-down fighting technique won't mean a damn thing in the correct time zone!

In any other form of competition, one could argue there is a 50/50 chance of whoever winning. But, Lyle ain't normal! You've got a 25% chance at best of beating him, then you add caffeine and pop-punk to the mix, and those chances drastically go down! On the main stage at EGLX, with ??the potential of the Sex T-Rex getting involved, you've normally?? got a 33 1/3% chance of winning.

Fact is, though, Lyle has a 66.7% chances of winning because the Sex T-Rex already knows he can't win against Lyle. So, Yahtzee, you can take your 33% 1/3 chance of winning, minus Lyle's 25% chance, and you've got a 8.1% chance of winning at EGLX (if you're lucky). But, then you take Lyle's 75% chance of winning (if this truly is one-on-one), and then add 66 and 2/3 percents chance of winning -- Lyle now has 141% and ??2/3 (+tax) chance of winning!

The numbers don't lie Yahtzee ??and they spell disaster for you at EGLX??!

'Liked it, despite absence of Flubber'

During a recent Nintendo Direct, we learned that the Nintendo 3DS remake of ghost bustin' classic Luigi's Mansion would feature an all-new co-op mode, where Luigi would be aided by what appeared? to b?e a ghostly green outline of himself.

As it turns out, this second player helper isn't just a lazy ghosted outline, but in fact he appears to be his own canon character! As seen in a video hosted by GameXplain, player two is in control of a green gelatinous blob, which has been formed into the shape of Luigi's handsome visage b??y a future version ??of Prof. E.Gadd.

This new character is named, naturally, "Gooigi".

Now that this second player avatar has been given backstory and a name, and has already got a page on the Super Mario Wiki, no doubt that qualifies him for an amiibo, his own spin-off title, and a place on the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster. Luigi's Mansion launches on Nintendo 3DS October 19.

Except you kinda have

Luigi's Mansion holds a very near and dear place in my heart. It was the first game I bought for my GameCube... or technically second because the cashier at WalMart scanned Star Wars Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader first. Eith??er way, it was the first GameCube game I played, the first one I beat and the first new series of the 128-bit era that I absolutely fell for.

The series has been stuck in my mind as of late. Since the announcement of Luigi's Mansion 3, I've felt myself gravitating back towards my original copy of Luigi's Mansion and its 3DS sequel Dark Moon, only able to resist the urge to drop everything and play them, because this website keeps me far to?o busy with other games. More specifically, it keeps me busy with new games; games I haven't played before. Life's short and I can't spend all my time reliving the past greats when there are so many new titles? I've yet to experience.

No, if I'm going to enjoy a Luigi's Mansion game right now, it will have to be one ??I've never played before. As luck would have it, such a game exists about five blocks from my apartment.

In 2014, a year after the release of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Capcom pulled back the curtain on an arcade spin-off of the franchise. Luigi's Mansion Arcade&??nbsp;takes the ghost-sucking action of th??e series and puts it into an on-rails shooter. I've been dying to play this since it was first announced but only got the chance recently when I learned the Round 1 Bowling & Amusement Center at my mall had the cabinet among its impressive line-up of Japanese fighting and rhythm games. With $20 worth of credits, I set out Friday night to see what it was I'd been missing all these years.

Calling Luigi's Mansion Arcade an original game would be something of a lie. The locations within are all modeled after mansions from Dark Moon. There is the beginner-friendly Gloomy Manor, the slight??ly more difficult Old Clockworks, and the unlockable final Treacherous Mansion. Only small bits from each mansion are explorable. Gloomy Manor features branching pathways while Old Clockworks and Treacherous Mansion are more or less linear in design.

Luigi's Mansion Arcade can be played with two players and features two settings: a normal mode and an easy mode. Normal mode requires players to flash ghosts with the Strobulb before sucking them in with the Poltergust 5000. Easy mode removes the requirement to use the Strobulb. I went with normal mode and dove into Gloomy Manor (though I did have the option to skip i??t and go straight to Old Clockworks).

My first thought, as I sucked up the easy Greenies I encountered right out of the gate, was how much Nintendo missed out by not making a Luigi's Mansion sequel for the Wii. Or even the Wii U. ?The Poltergust 5000 guns in the arcade cabinet mimic a Wii remote almost to a "T." There's a button on top to activate the Strobulb and a trigger to start the sucking action. That's just the "A" and "B" buttons of the Wiimote, only I have to grab this gun with both hands. It even uses the same type of pointer controls that made on-rails shooters such a heavenly genre to play on the console.

Anyway, Luigi's Mansion Arcade'?s mansions are split into individual rooms that are explored one at a time. Gloomy Manor feels like the selected areas were chosen at random w??hile the latter two mansions are more adequately interconnected. Just like in the original games, there's money hidden throughout each room you collect using the Poltergust vacuum. There are also safes and treasure chests to be opened by charging up the Strobulb and flashing them. Money is importable because it, along with how many ghosts you suck up, combos you get -- sucking up more than one ghost at a time -- and how many hits you take factor into your final score.

Ghosts found t??hroughout the mansion include the Greenies, Slammers, Hiders, Creepers, and Goobers, as well as stronger variations of the first three listed. At the end of each mansion is a boss battle and these sections are actually easier than the rest of the house. Gloomy Manor's Brain is a snap to defeat if you keep using the vacuum on anything he throws at you and the ??Three Sisters of Old Clockworks operate in a predictable, through increasingly speedy, pattern. King Boo is waiting at the end of Treacherous Mansion, for any players able to make it that far into the game.

Now, because this is an arcade game, it does its absolute best to drain players of as many credits as it can. Luigi has two hearts and a hit from a ghost takes usually takes half a heart away. Four hits and you have to pay if you want to stay and play. Because the mechanics of the game are relatively simple, Luigi's Mansion Arcade overwhelms players with an abundant amount of ghosts. On easy mode, this would ?have probably been no issue. On normal, it's a delicate balancing act of knowing when to stop sucking up ghosts so you can flash the ones about to hit you.

It's easier said than done because the game can throw an immense amount of enemies your?? way. Not just ghosts, but also spiders, bats and ectoplasmic projectiles. While the variety of ghosts you face is relatively low, they do grow more difficult towards the end of Old Clockworks and right at the beginning of the final mansion. There is a Strobomb you can use if you're inundated, but you're limited to just two of them with every credit.

Unfortunately for me, $20 wasn't?? enough to reach the end of the game. Halfway through Treacherous Mansion, I ran out of credits. Because the machine uses cards instead of quarters or dollar bills, there was?? no way for me to refill my card and return to the game before the "Continue?" counter reached zero. My final score was good enough to put me into 286th place...which is actually pretty bad.

After four years of waiting, finally playing Luigi's Mansion Arcade was absolutely worth the time and money. Not in a way I'm going to claim it's the greatest arcade game ever. That would be silly because Star Wars Episode 1: Pod Racer still exists. But it certainly reminded me of why I love this series so much, and only furthered my anticipation of the crazy hotel we'll be exploring when Luigi's Mansion 3 launches on Switch next year.

Society!

Pregame Discharge will never reach the point of including or imply??ing symbolism because that is the language o?f cowards. Instead, we'll stick to the news that today features the following:

  • Nintendo had a Nintendo Direct
  • Definitely not checking why Toad and Mario Kart were trending on Twitter!
  • Loot box stupidity and criminal activity!

Toad has been met with a terrible, terrible fate. However, on the topic of symbolism, thankfully our own Lyle Wrath has yet to reach the equivalent of being compared to a pres?ident's penis? -- at least not yet anyway. Then again... Imagine the branding possibilities!

So, while I still have you here and that image is sitting in your head: I'm gonna attempt to coax Lyle back into his cage with the soothing sounds of pop punk, alcoholic beverages, and a new supply of snow globes for him to shatter and then later consume ?the liquid from off the floor.

This isn't the Toad I know and love anymore

Microsoft's decision in adding a subscription fee to a service most peopl??e already pay for has finally come full circle in the realm of industry-changing consequences. Sony soon followed suit and now, more than a year into the Switch's lifespan, Nintendo is jumping on the gravy train with the Nintendo Switch Online service. Bizar?rely enough, it's just coming off like an unnecessary paywall tied to an NES library subscription service.

We already covered most of the recent Nintendo Direct in the premiere of Impulse, but Associate Editor Peter Glagowski and I had so much to say about this new service that we gave it its own bonus episode. Is it worth $20 a year? Will Luigi's torment ever end? Will Toad stop being a corporate whore? How many “families” will be created within the jbsgame.community for cheaper online se??rvices?

These are the questions that keep me awake at?? night.

Two times terrified

We got a new bit of news about the upcoming port of Luigi's Mansion for Nintendo 3DS during today's Nintendo Direct. The spooky ghost-bustin' title will feature a new two-pla??yer co-op mode!

Player one steps into the shoes of the taller Mario brother, whilst player two controls a spooky green outline (but not the spirit that left Lui??gi when he was MURDERED during the previous Nintendo Direct). Players ??who each own a copy of the game an play through the entirety of the adventure together. If only one of you owns the title, then it's just the boss battles.

Various amiibo are compatible with the new remake, including Boo, Toad and, of course, Luigi himself, all of which will provide you with help and secrets on your journey through the ghost-filled homestead. Luigi's Mansion launches on Nintendo 3DS October 12.

Spooky

Luigi's Mansion i??s a staple of? the GameCube lineup. Hell it was a launch title!

Whenever I think of picking up that 'lil mach??ine I usually recall memories of Nintendo throwing Luigi to the (ghost) wolves in an abandoned mansion without the help of Ma?rio. While he had plenty of appearances up until then this was the moment where Luigi became a truly beloved character for many: worthy of his own "Year of Luigi" celebration (which was extended!) down the line.

Not keen on letting the original die on the platform Nintendo has opted to remake it on 3DS, which is now set for an October release in the west. Grezzo, who has worked with Nintendo many times on projects like Majora's Mask 3D, will be handling development duties.

Both the US and Europe will get it in time for Halloween: it arrives on Oct?ober 12 in the former region, and October 19 in the latter.

How do you do, fellow kids?

If ther??e's ??one thing I know about Luigi, it's that he's a man of the people. He's one of us. Just a normal dude who's stuck in his brother's short, rotund shadow.

But in Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Luigi finally has a chance to step into the limelight for the first time since Nintendo's Year of? Luigi in 2013.

And how, exactly does Luigi prove once and for all that he's the mos?t chill Mario brother? By hitting a fucking d??ab.

That's right, Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, a video game about, well, I'm not entirely sure what's going on with that one quite yet, has Luigi dabbing ??with some real vigor. He hits it hard. Proper form and all.

As of today, Twitter users seem pretty torn on whether or not Luigi's dab is fire or not. You can check out the Dab Discourse here
