I must admit, despite not being the biggest fan of the overall franchise, I've been thoroughly enjoying Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. Troy Baker's solid impersonation of the titular whi??p-slinger is absolutely spot-on. However, it appears that some players have had problems making use of Indy's iconic item.

In the most recent patch - the aptly named Update 2 MachineGames has sent forth a few fixes for The Great Circle. There have been a couple of tweaks to some of the missions in which Gina isn't pulling her weight,? for e??xample.

//twitter.com/bethesda/status/1869054845589614841

However, the one that stood out for me in the official patch notes is the bit that says the studio has fixed an issue in which the player "may be unable to equip Indy’s whip." I've been lucky not to have experienced this problem, but imagine a world i??n which you get to play Indiana Jones but are unable to use his whip. It'd be like Spider-Man without his web-shooting abilities, Doom Guy without the Super Shotgun, or any Keanu Reeves film where he doesn't get to say "whoa."

Couldn't bear it!

Update 2 also fixes a few PC-specific things in the game, mostly related to Nvidia. For example, the patch should sort out performance problems ??for DLSS and Low Latency Mode. So, if you're playing on PC, hopefully, you'll see some improvements going forward.

For any str??eamers out there, there is one note at the bottom of the patch notes that says content creators "may have experienced crashes in the game if using OBS Stu??dio software to capture video." Updating OBS to version 31.0.0 should sort this. Thought it was worth mentioning here.

Other than that, it's business as usual. As I said above, I think Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a solid game overall, and I say that as someone who hasn't really been overly keen on MachineGames' past work (save for the Quake 2 maps the team did for the recent remaster). It's been getting some pretty great reviews overall??, and it might actually inspire me to go back and watch the films again.

Almost four years after being announced, the next canon adventure for Indiana Jones is here with the release of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This isn't Indy's first foray into the gaming world, but it's been a decade and a half since the daring archaeologist ?had a playable adventure.

Now I'll admit, I'm not a diehard Indiana Jones fan. I've seen all the movies and enjoyed them—yes, even Kingdom of the Crystal Skull/em>but it's not a franchise I've found myself rewatching many times over the years like Lucasfilm's other IP, Star Wars. However, I am a huge fan of Wolfenstein and, therefore, developer MachineGames. I didn't realize just how awesome the concept of a MachineGames-developed Indiana Jones would be u?ntil the developer, with publisher Bethesda Softworks, revealed the title in 2021 as b?eing a developer in close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games.

Across my roughly 20-hour journey, I explored dark tombs and ancient archaeological dig sites while fending off Nazi soldiers and navigating deadly traps. And while the journey wasn't flawless, it was a lot of fun. From its gameplay and mysteriously grandiose story, to the witty and quirky quips you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the most authentic playable version of Indy y?et, and one I'm happy to h??ave experienced.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (PC [reviewed], Xbox Series X|S)
Developer: MachineGames
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Released: December 8, 2024
MSRP: $69.99

The story of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is set in the year 1937, between the events of the original Indiana Jones film, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and the third film, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. After a brief intro where you explore a South Am??erican tomb and get introduced to the controls of being Indy, which, of course, includes you making use of his trusty whip a??nd escaping a giant boulder that comes tumbling after you, Indy returns to Marshall College only to find it's been ransacked.

After cleaning up the place, Indy discovers one of the artifacts he previously found is missing, and with only a medallion referencing Vatican City being left behind. And thus the events of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle begin, with Indy heading to the Vatican to track down the sto??len artifact and determine why it was stolen in the first place.

While the argument can be made that developer MachineGames has historically taken a gameplay-driven focus in its previous titles (Wolfenstein and Quake), with somewhat of a more backseat approach to the story, that's not the case in The Great Circle. With four hours of cinematics, the s?toryline is the focal point here, and it's a good one.

After tracking down the stolen artifact, Indy realizes a long-standing secret order in the Vatican is working with the Axis powers (Fascist Italy led by Benito Mussolini and Nazi Germany led by Hitler) to try and uncover and bring to life some sort of spiritual event that is connected to a series of sites built throughout history that form a perfect circle around the world, AKA The Great Circle.

Look, I'll say it, this may be the best Indiana Jones story yet. Throughout The Great Circle, you'll encounter classic staples of the franchise, like comical quips and deadpan stares from Indy, all while exploring beautiful parts ??of the world like the Great Pyramids in Egypt and the ancient Sukhothai Kingdom in Thailand. I was worried that the plot taking place in the year between two movies would make it feel rather redundant. After all, logically speaking, if this story mattered so much wouldn't we have heard about it? But thankfully, that's not the case, as the story continues to ramp up throughout Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, culminating in a rewarding and impactful ending that, in my opinion, leaves its mark on the franchise. This is canon, after all.

My only gripes with the story were essentially afterthoughts by the end, but is certainly worth mentioning. The pacing of things is a bit off at times, especially at the beginning of Indy's adventure. After the introduction, you head to Vatican City, which I expected to be a quick way of further setting up the story b??efore heading out on an epic Indy adventure. However, your visit to the Vatican is far from quick. You'll run around Vatican City interacting with various characters and uncovering hidden tombs for a while—for me, it took about four hours—before heading to your next destination.

Don't get me wrong, Machine Games created a beautifully dystopian Muss??olini-controlled Fascist Vatican City, it just feels like you're there a bit too long, and I was definitely ready to leave well before you actually do so. In the end, the events in the Vatican are important, and it does introduce you to a lot of the characters you'll continue to interact with over the rest of the game, it just felt a bit offputting to be kick off the ??adventure running around the Vatican for a few hours.

Of course, a proper Indiana Jones outing can't rely on story alone. At its core, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is a stealth-focused game. As you sneak into various Fascist-controlled tombs, dig sites, and even entire cities, you'll have to do so while navigating around patrolling guards and s??oldiers.

As someone not so good at stealth games, this was a bit daunting at first. But thankfully, stealth isn't necessarily required in The Great Circle. If you manage to get spotted, you initiate mostly hand-to-hand melee combat with the soldiers. You can block, parry, and even dodge attacks while managing a stamina bar to swing back at your opponent. Of course, the noise will often attract other nearby soldiers, so you'll often end up taking on a small army before you can proceed. But while this is often a near-impossible task in most stealth-focused games, The Great Circle is very fair at letting you fight your way out of blowin??g your cover and still get back to the task at h??and.

You'll also find a ton of melee weapons scattered throughout every area where you can pick objects like a shovel, a pickaxe, a hammer, or even just a plunger and use it to stealth-takedown or even engage in melee brawls with your opponents. There are various guns you can find as well as loot off of enemies you defeat, but they are often very limited in ammo. Oddly enough, the gunplay in The Great Circle feel??s very tight and well-designed. I didn't ??engage in many firefights as Indy, but when I did, they were a lot of fun although a bit short-lived.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle combat

Overall, the combat in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle fills its purpose: to ????provide some fun gameplay elements while exploring Indy. It's nothing game-changing, but it works. With it being a lesser focus compared to the story, exploration, and puzzles The Great Circle has to offer, I think it was a great choice by MachineGames to make combat less hassle and more fun. It's nice not being forced to stealth or feeling like you're doomed when you get?? caught.

The real gameplay strengths of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, though, is its puzzles and exploration. Each of the three main areas you explore—Vatican City, Giza, and Sukhothai—are open-world hubs. You're free to roam around them as Indy as you wish, taking on side quests, exploring on your own, or progressing the main story. There are actually quite a few optional activities available in each of the three hubs. I did some of them, which resulted in my roughly 20-hour playthrough. For the most part, they will build on backstories for certain characters or areas, but the optional content doesn't really affect the main story. If someone wanted to ignore all the side content, I expect they could get through The Great Circle in 10-15 hours, whereas a completionist loo?king to do everything might be lookin?g at upwards of 30 or more. There's plenty of content here, and it's up to you how much you want to explore.

Regardless of how much you explore, there's one thing you can expect to find in both the main story and optional side content: puzzles. I have to hand it to MachineGames, every puzzle was unique and assuming I missed out on some through?? the optional content, there are a ton of puzzles in The Great Circle. For the most part, they get more and more creative as well, as you progress further through the game. There are a couple that were tricky to solve, but using a Camera item you get early on, you can take pictures of key parts of the puzzles, and Indy will essentially think out loud, which provides you with clues on how to proceed through the puzzle.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle cutscene
Screenshot by Destructoid

At times, the puzzles were so easy I thought for sure I was missing something, only to be shocked to see that I had the right solution and that was it. At other times, I found myself real??ly scratching my head on how to proceed. In all of those moments, however, taking a picture with the Camera provided enough of a hint to get me thinking in the right direction, and I never had problems progressing.

Aside from the early pacing issues, I did encounter a handful of bugs. Nothing game-breakin??g, thankfully, but they often ranged from silly to annoying. More than once, I'd be engaged in hand-to-hand combat with enemies, and they would seemingly just get overwhelmed and stand in place. It's like I broke them, and no matter what I did they would just stand there and let me hit them while circling around me.

Another very comical bug I experienced early on while in Vatican City at least made for a good story. After sneaking around Vatican City doing tasks for an Indiana Jones-ally named Antonio, I returned to his location to find him sitting in a chair with an object impaled through his chest, staring at me, eyes open wide. Assuming he was murdered for working with Indy as part of the story, I moved forward to try and get a better look at the situatio?n when suddenly Antonio spoke: "Well, Indy, did you bring me any photographic evidence?" Turns out that somehow, an interactable melee object had just glitched out and was just clipping through him.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is an incredibly authentic Indiana Jones experience, and MachineGames really makes you feel like you are Indiana Jones. If you're looking for an epic journey of exploration with a fun and mysterious story, that's exactly what you'll get with The Great Circle, and with a high level of polish to boot. The combat can feel like window dressing at times, but it doesn't really take from the adventure. The exploits of Indiana Jones are all about exploring, puzzle solving, and having some laughs, and there's plenty of that to go around in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle.

Denuvo anti-piracy tech has often been a sore point for gamers, especially on PC. However, many of you will be pleased to know that MachineGames' Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will not be s?hipping with the offending DRM software when it ??launches on December 9.

This was confirmed by publisher Bethesda in a post on X recently. The message seems to be a reply to a now-deleted comment from a user, prompting the studio to say that The Great Circle "does not include Denuvo." This was then followed by a statement declaring that it wa?s?? only ever used in "review builds for leak precautions."

//twitter.com/bethesda/status/1864341765668372673

Indeed, if you look on the game's official Steam page, you c??an see down the right-hand side that a third-party EULA needs to be agreed to before playing the game, but there's no mention of DRM in use anywhere. This should be good news for PC users.

Indiana Jones and the Stuttering Framerates

If you're not familiar with it (you lucky, lucky people), Denuvo is a form of Digital Rights Management software that became mo?re abundant during the early days of the internet as a means of protecting data on music CDs. These days, however, it's typically associated with video games.

While publishers and studios implement it as a way of preventing intellectual properties from being pirated or tampered with illicitly, it can often lead to issues for the user. Denuvo is especially egregious on this front, with it being linked to low performance and persistent drops in framerates on games like Deathloop. Ergo: Denuvo is often seen as controversial, especially from a consumer/gamer perspective.

As such, many games have it removed post-launch, which is exactly what happened with Back 4 Blood, Lies of P, Doom Eternal, and more.

Given this, PC gamers will be pleased to know that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle shan't be shipping with the contentious DRM so?ftware. However, that doesn't necessarily mean it won't ever be put in. If Denuvo can be removed after a game's release, does that mean it can also be implemented after the fact? Only time will tell.

Last week, many of us were excited to see the official reveal trailer of MachineGames' upcoming Indiana Jones title The Great Circle. But footage shown at Developer Direct last week appears to be hinting at the return of Quake.

During the showcase of the upcoming Indiana Jones release at around the 11:35 mark we see a quick shot of a whiteboard, covered in barely legible red ink. However, among these scrawls you can clearly make out the iconic logo from the first Quake game.

//youtu.be/Yp7_ImMV1Iw?t=694

Just above that, it's also possib?le to make out the characters "AKE 6." Given that the first letter is almost cut off from the screen, it could be inferred that this is the other half of the word "QUAKE."

Indy goes gothic

This could easily be nothing more than a throwaway reference, but the fact that it appears at all is interesting. Now, you don't need me to tell you that there's been no confirmation of any Quake projects in the pipeli??ne. At least none that w??e're aware of.

Having said that, with developer MachineGames taking the reins on the modern Wolfenstein titles not to mention last year's Quake 2 remaster, in which the studio contributed new maps no one would be surprised if the team turned its attention to the original Quake.

Whether this would be a reboot or a new entry cannot be said, but given that the number six is present in the Indiana Jones trailer, it could be a continuation. If you're thinking there are only four games in the Quake series, consider Quake Champions the fifth installment. Or even Enemy Territory: Quake Wars.

In any case, these are just rumors at the moment. Chances are, if anyone was going to bring the legendary FPS back, who ?better than id Software? But MachineGames would definitely be a solid choice,?? so we'll just have to wait and see if the hidden clue in the video is more than just an Easter egg.

As part of the Xbox Developer Direct Livestream, MachineGames showed off their upcoming Indiana Jones project, Indiana Jones and The Great Circle. Most importantly, it involves Harrison Ford('s likeness) and punching Nazis. Two awesome th?ings.

Actually, there’s probably everything you’d expect from an Indiana Jones game. There’s a whip, torches, the Wilhelm scream, a travel montage, a female sidekick, and ancient (but still functional) puzzles. Interestingly, it’s mostly done in the first person, except when you’re doing more agile activities or looking at Harrison Ford? in a cutscene.

//youtu.be/0e17p2IVDUU?feature=shared

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle takes place between Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade. In it, ??Indy witnesses the theft of an artifact from the College he works at. He follows its trail and discovers that it’s central to a? deeper mystery.

MachineGames is trying to capture the look, feel, and sound of an Indiana Jones movie, and I’m convinced. I’m not sure if I mentioned this, but Harrison Ford is in it. They promise th?at you’ll be ??able to enjoy it, even if you haven’t seen the movies. That’s good because I skipped that last two.

Indiana Jones and The Great Circle is coming to Xbo?x Series X|S and PC later this year.

Though Game Pass may pick up the slack

Both Starfield and MachineGames' Indiana Jones are going to be exclusives for the Xbox. As such, not only will a lot of PlayStation owners be pissed off they won't get to play either of these games, but some may question whether Microsoft ha??s considered that this move wil??l likely mean less sales.

However, the Xbox company has anticipated this, it seems. Screenshots from court documents used in the Microsoft vs. FTC case (as uploaded by games journalist Stephen Totilo) reveal that Tim Stuart, chief? financial officer ?for the tech giant, believes exclusivity won't be a problem.

//twitter.com/stephentotilo/status/167930795??0706372611

In fact, Microsoft is confident both Starfield and Indiana Jones would sell "more than 10 million units" if they were going to be released on PlayStation. Testifying in court, Stuart said that the company had "evaluated exclusivity of ZeniMax [parent company of Bethesda??] games in December 2020".

Ten million is a huge potential loss

Having said that, Microsoft is certain it can offset such a potential loss through Game Pass. By making Starfield and Indiana Jones available on the Xbox cloud service, the company hopes to make up for not selling 10 million units via its ??biggest competitor?.

In the?? grand scheme of things, it doesn't seem like Stuart or Microsoft are concerned about not being able to shift millions more on the PlayStation. Given the immense hype surrounding Bethesda's upcoming sci-fi RPG, there's no question about it being able to make a significant profit.

Starfield is due for release on September 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. If you want something to do until then, may we suggest this 1,000-page compendium?

There's a curious job opening at MachineGames

For all you B.J. Blazkowicz fans out there, it's possible that Wolfenstein 3 could currently be in development. While Cyberpilot and Youngblood came ?out in 2019, the last mainline entry in the revitalized series was back in 2017. Since then, many of you have wanted to see more exploits from the Nazi-killing protagonist.

The existence of a new job opening comes from Reddit user Hard2DaC0re, who points to a new vacancy posted by developer MachineGames. The studio has been responsible for the modern wave of Wolfenstein games, so the fact that the company is advertising a new position suggests something is on the horizon (indeed, the MachineGames website s??hows a number of job openings). The senior animator listing specifically states that applicants must be famil??iar with the developer's prior releases.

Is B.J. back?

It's still early days to say for certain if Wolfenstein is poised for an immediate comeback. At the time of writing, there's been no confirmation from official parties about whether Wolfenstein 3 is currently in the works. We already know that MachineGames is making an Indiana Jones game. These new positions could be related to that project. But it's really just a matter of when in terms of Wolfenstein's triumphant return.

While 2019's Youngblood wasn't as well received,?? it was still a welcome continuation of the rebooted series. Plus, it's nice to see i??d Software's iconic FPS franchise is still finding a home in the modern gaming world. Things have certainly changed a lot over the decades, but it seems what hasn't changed is people's desire to take on the Third Reich.

Just to reiterate, the rumors about a new Wolfenstein game being in development are just that. F?or now, it's best to hold off any excitement, but hopefully, there'll be some official news to gorge on at some point.

"Now, I get a chance to do what I [originally] hoped to, but this time I get to do it with some of my oldest and best friends," said Andersson. "Joining MarchineGames is like coming home—amazing people I worked with during Riddick and Darkness, but also teeming with new ones, whose talent daily [blow?s] me away."

Alongside Riddick and The Darkness, Andersson has also worked on Colors Live and the surprisingly fun Metroid-meets-pinball game Yoku's Island Express.

"I'm so excited about what we are building, and the way [we] get to do it—featuring one of the most iconic characters ever, in collaboration with ??my friends at Lucasfilm, published by one of the biggest publishers in the world, and doing it at an amazing studio like MachineGames," said Andersson. "This will be something special."

A new adventure for Indiana Jones

The new Indiana Jones project was revealed to the public in 2021, and it's been fairly quiet since. MachineGames, of Wolfenstein fame, is developing the new take on Indy. Presumably, there are top men work?ing on it. Top. Men.

It does seem like the new Indiana Jones is a ways off though. With a n??ew design director on board, we'll hopefully start to see more of what MachineGames ?is putting together.

Horde and Honey are here for Quake

The remaster/re-release of the original Quake from NightDive Studios is still getting new content. Bethesda announced that Update 2 is out today and contains both a new Horde Mode and the Honey add-on, alongside some other new improvements to good ol' Quake.

In a Bethesda blog, the publisher breaks down what's all in the update. The Horde Mode added to Quake today is a new experience designed by MachineGames, letting one to four players or bots take?? on waves of enemies together. There are multiple difficulty levels, four new maps specifically designed for Horde play, and even boss monsters that let you unlock new weapons and items.

And for the solo players out there, Quake is also adding the Honey add-on. MachineGames senior level designer Christian Grawer created Honey, a trip through a village with a sinister secret. Originally released years ago, it's getting added back in as an add-on for Quake. Much like the add-ons for the Doom re-releases, these seem simple enough to boot up and play, so you get to enjoy some new Quake content like its 1996 all over again.

As time has rolled on, it's been nice seeing these classics of PC gaming past get so much attention. The Quake re-release left a strong impression on us, and even outside Bethesda, companies like EA have gone back to their vaults for some PC gaming revivals. Plus??, the addition of new co??ntent really shows how timeless some of these games are.

Other improvements to Quake include text chat and push-to-talk support in pre-game lobbies, crosshair color and type options, and improved auto-aim to reduce the amount of snapping and view-locking. If you still needed an excuse to play some Quake, well, take this as your cue.

Just in time for QuakeCon, here's some Quake

After popping up on the radar a few times ahead of this weekend's QuakeCon, a remaster of the first Quake game is out now. The remaster brings Quake to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch with next-gen versions (and a free upgrade) on the way, and?? it's got some extra content in store, too.

According to the store description on Microsoft and the Nintendo eShop, this version of Quake will get higher resolution (depending on platform) and widescreen support. There are?? also some visual touch-ups, like anti-a??liasing and enhanced models. The remaster will also still have its soundtrack, including the theme by Trent Reznor.

On the single-player side, there's obviously Quake's campaign. Also included are the Dark Fantasy campaign, The Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity expansion??s, and two more expansions developed by MachineGames: Dimension of the Past, and the all-new Dimension of the Machine.

In Dimension of the Machine, you? travel across space and time to bring together lost runes, powering a long-dormant machine to open a portal that's ??hiding the "greatest threat to all known worlds."

If multiplayer's more your speed, the Quake remaster will also have both online and local multiplayer. There's support for four-player local split-screen, dedicated servers for online matchmaking, and peer-to-peer support for custom matches. Crossplay is also enabled, so you can match up against both your Switch pals and?? PC pals.

Quake will also have some more content in store too, as this remaster will support free fan-made and official mods, starting with Quake 64. Bethesda says more fan-made an??d official mods and missions will be coming soon, too.

All of this, plus gyro-aiming on the Switch and a pretty reasonable $9.99 price point (or available simply as part of Xbox Game Pass), is a pretty rad announcement for nostalgic Quake players like myself. It's been literal decades since I first picked this series up, but I?'m very ready to hop, strafe, and frag my way back in.
