The best PS5 single-player games make the platform one of the greatest consoles to own today. With exclusives like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and God of War Ragnarok, there are many outstanding experiences on the beloved system. While it's sad that some double-A exclusives like Gravity Rush 2 and LittleBigPlanet 3 have fizz?led from PlayStation's priority list, there are still grand single-player campaigns that will take your breath away. Marvel’s Spider-Man series

If you're a big comic book fan or just like action games in general, you can't go wrong with Marvel's Spider-Man series from Insomniac Games. Web slinging feels the best it's ever been, evolving the system from the beloved Spider-Man 2 PS2 game and letting you do tricks in the air. Boss battles are immensely important and truly up the stakes of the storyline. Finally, this Marvel version of New York is so detailed as you're beating up foes across the stunning map with a glorious battle system. The follow-up based on Miles Morales is also stellar, perhaps outdoing the original game, with an elevated battle system and intense, drama-filled story. Now's a good time to get into the series as Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered is getting a standalone release on PS5.

God of War series

If you love single-player games on PS5, you owe it to yourself to play the Norse God of War series. I personally found the PS2 and PS3 entries hard to get into. The action gets repetitive, there are oddly placed puzzles, and the harsh overtones of Kratos' personality repelled me. However, this new reboot-quel with Kratos as a father is a game changer. The way Kratos evol?ves past his violent origins and grows as a person is refreshing. Both of these games act as a fantastic coming-of-age story for his son Atreus as well. The combat takes a slower, more methodical third-person approach. The axe feels satisfying to wield, and the powers Kratos attains over the course of the series make you feel strong. There are plenty of cinematic bosses that amaze you too.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart hosts some of the best PS5 graphics, bar none. Reviewers often say this series looks like a Pixar film for a good reason, and I agree. But it's not just a tour-de-force of graphics, however. This sci-fi game features two engaging platforming heroes trying to save the multiverse from Dr. Nefarious and company. Most of the guns on offer pack a punch, like the Shatterbomb, while other weapons turn your enemies into cute objects like pixels with the Pixelizer. Th??e storyline is also impactful and gets surprisingly emotional.

The Last of Us Part I

Talking about emotional stories, The Last of Us Part I will leave you weeping. This post-apocalyptic has you play as Joel, a father who lost their child, and connects with a girl named Ellie as they face the harsh zombie-filled environment. Yes, they're called the Infected (not zombies, per se), but what makes them unique is how they have to listen to the environment to know where you are. It gets creepy as you have to slowly work your way through dark hallways to succeed. Otherwise, they'll come rampaging toward you, and you need your wits to shoot them in the correct spots. What's even scarier, perhaps, are the people you meet along the way, and the storyline gets very heavy as Joel and Ellie try to keep themselves alive. It's one of the best PS5 single-player games because of how intense it gets. I haven't even gotten into the impressive graphic??s, either.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring is a tough S.O.B., but the grind is well worth your time as you defeat tough bosses with a big smile on your face and scale across a dangerous fantasy landscape. I've personally never connected with a Souls game, but for some reason, Elden Ring grabbed me. The open world allows you to explore, challenge other bosses, and level up at your own speed. You can find mysterious areas naturally, get awesome loot, and then attempt to defeat a tough boss once more. That game loop is absolutely engrossing and far better than the linear Souls style as you finally have options. You??'re not stuck with one boss over and over and over again. The world-building is also a strength of the game, with gorgeous scenery and architecture to gaze at.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy

I'll say it. This game is better than the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies. The characters are written so well and are different enough from the Hollywood versions. T??here's a fantastic character arc for Eidos Montreal's interpretation of Starlord, and you truly feel the connection between all of th??e members of the group. The script is also quite funny. The third-person shooting gameplay is thrilling as you're zooming around foes with your jet boots and instructing the squad on what to do. Bosses also feel like a big deal in this game.

Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade

If you need an RPG to play on your PS5, Final Fantasy VII Remake: Intergrade is ready for you. With spectacular visuals, fast-paced yet strategic combat, and an engrossing storyline, this game will grab you from beginning to end. The music is also phenomenal. The Intergrade edition comes with a chap?ter that?? introduces Yuffie into the mix that you can't play on the PS4.

Astro’s Playroom

Want a game that the kids (or your inner child) can play? Astro's Playroom is a wonderful pick. It fully uses the DualSense controller's functionality, such as the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, to make a memorable experience. The platforming is some of the best the PS5 has to offer, as well. Additionally, it references great moments in PlayStation's long history. The best part is that Astro's Playroom is free to download!

Resident Evil 4 Remake

This is an almost perfect horror game. Stunning graphics, a creepy environment, an epic story, tough bosses, and stellar third-person shooting gameplay. The puzzles are also a treat in Resident Evil 4 Remake. There's not much else ??to say o??ther than pick this game up.

Horizon series

While the sequel, Forbidden West, covers familiar ground in terms of its gameplay, it's still a tour-de-force of graphics. The unique robot-filled post-apocalyptic setting is striking. You also have some stellar performances by Ashley Burch (Aloy) and the rest of the cast. The storyline is also intriguing as we learn bits and pieces about why our civilization failed many years ago. Horizon: Zero Dawn is an incredible open-world game as you upgrade your gear and defeat titanic robots along the way, strategically breaking their parts until they fall. Forbidden West is still impressive, bu?t to me, fails to capture my interest as much as the original.

Honorable Mentions

There are some other stand-out titles that didn't quite make the Best PS5 single-player games list. One of them that is likely mentioned in the comments is Ghost of Tsushima. It presents a gorgeous open world inspired by the Mongolian invasion era of Japan. However, it strikes me more as a PS4 game rather than a PS5-specific entry for this list. It has received a remaster with additional content set on Iki Island. Additionally, there's Returnal. It's gained a large fanbase since its release, but can arguably be considered a co-op game, following one of its post-game updates.

A great value, in concept

PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium are kinda like Xbox Game Pass. You can play a variety of games available in the service's library you wouldn't otherwise check out. Games are expensive, and a subscription service can help alleviate that pain. But is PlayStation Plus Extra worth it, and should you upgrade to Premium?

Let's find out!

What the heck is PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium?

I don't blame anyone for being confused! There are multi??ple tiers to PlayStation Plus' subscription service.

• Essential ($9.99/month) gives you online multiplayer access, discounts, cloud storage, Share Play, and of course monthly games. For example, you'll be getting Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Meet Your Maker, and Tails of Iron in April of 2023.
• Extra ($14.99/month) is the next step up from that. You'll gain access to a wide selection of games in a catalog, in addition to all the prior benefits. This includes big exclusive titles like Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Demon's Souls, and Spider-Man: Miles Morales and third-party titles, such as Ghostwire: Tokyo and Immortals: Fenyx Rising. 
• Premium ($17.99/month) offers everything from the previous tiers but also adds classic titles from the PS1 and PSP (like Tekken 2, Super Stardust Portable, and Syphon Filter), trials, and cloud streaming into the mix.

PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium

So is PlayStation Plus Extra worth it? Well, the games library has a wide range of game genres and experiences to choose from. There's the whole Life is Strange series, NEO: The World Ends with You, the comprehensive Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, the open-world Dragon Ball Z Kakarot, and of course PlayStation's first-party offerings like Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Horizon: Forbidden West. You'll also be able to play major indie darlings like Haven, Untitled Goose Game, and the recently released Tchia. ??PlayStation touts there are hundreds of games available on the service. If y?ou want to save money and don't mind missing out on playing games on day one, PlayStation Plus Extra is a good option.

PlayStation Plus Premium is slightly more expensive but it does widen the library even further with streamed PS3  games and downloadable PS1/PSP games that are up-rendered to 4K. With Premium, most PS4 and PS5 games can be streamed to your console, PC, or phone too. You can play forgotten PlayStation franchises like Killzone and Resistance on the service, in addition to the beloved PS2 Ratchet & Clank games through streaming. The selection of PS1 games is admittedly brief but it does have some favorites like the original Ape Escape and Tekken 2. Some of the PS1 games ??even have trop?hies you can unlock.

The trials from PlayStation Plus Premium also give some value. If you've ever considered trying out Marvel's Midnight Suns, you can play a two-hour trial of the strategy game with PlayStation Plus Premium. Once you purchase the game, you can then begin where you left off. But really, that's about it if you don't want to play the retro titles.

Are PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium worth the price?

PlayStation Plus Premium is arguably not worth the price. The selection of PS1 games is lackluster and lacks big titles like Metal Gear Solid, the original Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon trilogies, and the best entry of the PS1 Tekken games: Tekken 3! It is getting better with inclusions like The Legend of Dragoon and Worms: Armageddon, but ??they ?come few and far between, similar to the drip-feed formula of Switch Online.

The quality of streamed games can vary as well, dependi??ng on your connection. It does get spotty from time to time even with?? the best internet, and with key precision genres like fighting games, that is certainly a no-go.

PlayStation Plus Extra has a good selection overall, but it does pale in comparison to Xbox Game Pass. While Microsoft offers all its first-party titles on day one, you'll have to wait a long time for PlayStation to offer their games to their subscription service, if that even happens at all. Horizon Forbidden West was a nice surprise in February, but it took nearly a year to make it to PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium. It's inconsistent, however, as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is still not availabl??e on the service, a year and a half later.

Meanwhile, Hi-Fi Rush was announced and immediately released on Game Pass to great acclaim. There are a few select games that have launched day-and-date with PlayStation Plus like Tchia and Stray, but they come far between and aren't as high-budget as Halo Infinite or Gears 5. 

For dedicated PlayStation fans though who love to check out the cool third-party titles on the service or go back to old franchises like Ratchet & Clank, PlayStation Plus Extra is certainly wo??rth it. You may want to skip Premium unless the PS1 and PSP classics library expands greatly.

We've missed you, Spidey

As part of an end-of-year post from PlayStation, Marvel's Spider-Man developer Insomniac has returned to give us the newest update on the game's sequel: a release window. The PlayStation blog is meant to highlight the platform's upcoming highlights for the new year, and what better way to start it off than with Insomniac's announcement that Spider-Man 2 will be coming in fall of 2023. Okay, so that's a pretty big window, and there's always the chance that the game could be delayed. At the very lea?st, though, it's nice to that development is coming along nicely and, for now, we can expect to play the game by the end of next year.

Insomiac's 2018 title Spider-Man, and its follow-up, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, are some of the best-loved games to come out of the last console generation. Based on the swinging mechanics alone, I have to agree. I've never played a game that made me feel more like a superhero, and I've been known to return to the game even after completing it just to swing my way around Manhattan. While Marvel had already taken over the box office, Insomniac secured the studio's hold on the newest console generation with the best superhero games since the Arkham series.

I think it's safe to say that Spider-Man 2 has been one of the most anticipated upcoming titles out there, so getting confirmation that it's on the way is going to be a huge boost for fans. We've got plenty to keep us busy in the mean time with all of the awesome releases headed our way in the first half of 2023 (I'm personally keeping an eye on Breath of the Wild: Tears of the Kingdom and Hades II), but I think it's safe to say that when Spider-Man 2 finally drops, we're ready to drop everything to sli??p back into the suit of our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Happy holidays, everyone

It's almost always difficult to dole out seasonal video game re?commendations, and never is that challenge more apparent than now, at the beginning of the holiday season. We're only a few days out from Hanukkah, which means the holidays are here in full force. But with so few festive video games in existence, it's hard to figure out what,? exactly, to play with hot cocoa in hand.

L?uckily for you, I've got ten solid candidates for your playing pleasure over the next couple of weeks. I've tried my best to include something for everyone here, whether you're home fo??r the holidays or stuck someplace you'd rather not be.

Let me make two things clear: For one, I'm only focusing on games that are readily accessible in 2022. Wii Sports is obviously the best holiday game, but, unfortunately, it is disqualified from this list (and Nintendo Switch Sports is not quite a worthy successor). Sorry, bowling stans. I'm also not simply compiling a list of Christmas-themed games or games with Christmas levels. While I would love to put Kingdom Hearts 2 on this list for its excellent Nightmare Before Christmas world, that game doesn't feel very holiday-ish to me. There are some Christmas-?themed games here??, but there are also games that simply feel like they belong in the holiday lineup. It's all about vibes. With that in mind, let's dive into the ten best games to play during the holiday season.

1. RuneScape

The holiday season can be a lonely time for many, so it's natural to want to find an online community of some sort. While my personal favorite MMO is Final Fantasy XIV, I think Final Fantasy will get its due on this list. Instead, I'd like to point to a particularly nice little title: RuneScape.

RuneScape is one of those rare MMOs where the community is generally friendly and inviting, and the game itself is downright charming. If you're like me and the falling snow outside always makes you a little nostalgic, then Old School RuneScape, an early-00s time capsule, is a??n even better option.

2. Spider-Man: Miles Morales

The older Spider-Man is taking a well-earned working vacation, and he's left the new guy in charge... just in time for Christmas. Yes, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is, indeed, one of the few proper Christmas games out there, and exploring a thoroughly winterized take on the gorgeously realized Manhattan of 2018's Marvel's Spider-Man is an absolute treat.

At its core, this game isn't all that different from the 2018 tit??le, but the 2018 title is great, so that's just fine. Swinging and flipping around Harlem is a blast, and there are plenty of engaging side quests that make this a perfect game to burrow into.

3. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney

Another rare game with some bona fide Christmas action is Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney. I will forever associate this game with the holidays simply because I got it as a Christmas present in middle s??chool, but the final case in the game is a genuine Christmas story! It's also very good.

Murder mysteries have always been a perfect winter excursion, and the Ace Attorney series has some of the most engaging murder mysteries in video game history. Weeding out the killer from an ensemble of well-realized characters is an absolute delight. This first game in the series is great, but if it leaves you wanting more, you can always do what I do at least once a year and play all five of its sequels in quick succession immediately afterwards. The two newly-localized spinoffs, released as The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, also have some winter-set cases, so you should probably give those a shot, too. Oh, and Ghost Trick, while you're at it.

4. Cave Story

Something about Cave Story will always scream "holidays" to me. Maybe it's the cozy sprite art, or the sense of wondrous exploration. Maybe it's the adorable bunny-like Mimiga and the sense of comm??unity in their little village. Mayb??e it's the holiday overlay the game receives every year. Maybe it's just because one of the main characters is named "Santa."

Whatever the case, Cave Story is an excellent way to spend a few cool winter evenings. There's also a free-to-play side story, Cave Story's Secret Santa, that is explicitly about Christmas, which is neat. As a side note, I've found a healthy handful of Christmas games fo??r this list and absolutely no games centered on the other winter holidays. Curious.

5. Christmas Massacre

I know the holidays are usually a time for cheer and high spirits, but I'm also a horror fan, so I know people who enjoy horror do not rest for the month of December. So once you're done watching Black Christmas and Krampus (and Adult Swim Yule Log, a new but worthy addition to the canon), why not try out Christmas Massacre?

Puppe??t Combo, the one-man army behind a wave of VHS-inspired low-poly horror games, delivered a very Puppet Combo-ish Christmas present with this title. If the idea of a serial killer dressed as Santa Claus appeals to you, you'll probably get something out of this one.

6. Final Fantasy IX

A lot of people find themselves with a bit of extra free time on their hands right about now. School ??breaks are beginning, folks are taking time off from work, and things are winding down before they get hectic all over again. What to do?? with all that space in your schedule? Why not tuck into a big old JRPG?

Realistically, any Final Fantasy game could fill this space. Final Fantasy VI and VII are two of the greatest JRPGs ever made, so if you haven't already, you really should give those a shot. I'm currently in the midst of a Final Fantasy XIII replay (and I'm gonna finish it this time, I swear). If RuneScape wasn't your speed and you still need an MMO, XIV is great. But for my money, if you want a game that feels like it was made to be played with a blanket and a warm drink, Final Fantasy IX is the game for you.

7. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

It's not always easy to get the whole family onboard with a video game. When I'm at my folks' place, it can?? be tough to convince anyone to buckle down and play somethin??g together - video games just aren't their speed.

You know what everyone can agree on, though? Mario Kart. It is an indisputable fact of life that everyone loves Mario Kart. Your mom loves Mario Kart, and your grandma does, too. Your cousins? Huge Luigi-heads. Anyone who's coming to visit will be happy to play Mario Kart. That's just reality.

8. The Last of Us

I know The Last of Us doesn't exactly mesh well with "Feliz Navidad," but I still think now's a good time to give it a shot. At its core, The Last of Us is a game about a cynical, lonely old man learning to accept love and family into his heart. That is, to be clear, the exact same story as Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol.

I'm only half-joking with this one. Obviously, The Last of Us is neither whimsical nor cheery. Still, it's the kind of non-traditional family narrative that I get a craving for right around this time every year. Plus, you're probably going to want a refresher before the HBO s??how next month.

9. Super Mario 3D World

Yeah, I put two Mario games on the list. Sue me. Super Mario 3D World is one of those games that just makes you feel like a kid agai??n. It's not too big, it's not overly demanding, and it's just a dang good time. The unparalleled warmth of a bite-sized Mario running through bite-sized levels is exactly enough to ward off that pesky winter chill.

10. Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics

When you've exhausted every track in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe but you still want something to play with your gaming-repulsed family, it's probably time to turn to Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics. This collection of games (mostly board and card games, some faux sports) is the perf??ect remedy for a t??ired holiday gathering.

Every game in Clubhouse Games is simple enough that everyone at your party will be able to understand it. In fact, they probably already know the rules to a lot of these titles. Quite frankly, if your family is like mine, you're going to be spending a lot of time playing board games anyways. Why not play them in this extremely charming and polished package? It's even got bowling! And it almost feels like Wii Sports bowling!

Even more Spidey action is on the way for PC players

Another Marvel's Spider-Man has locked in a date for a PC port. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales hits PC on November 18.

The PC version of Miles Morales will have PC features and settings, similar to the Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered port that hit PC earlier this year.

These include some fancy graphics options, like ray-traced reflections and new ray-traced shadows. NVIDIA DLSS 3 is also being supported, as are other options like DLSS 2, DLAA, and NVIDIA Reflex. And hardware-wise, Miles Morales will support ultra-wide gaming with ratio??s of 21:9, 32:9, or even 48:9 through triple-monitor setups.

That's on the extreme end of things though. According to today's PlayStation Blog, Insomniac is also supporting other configurations aside from high-end PCs; namely, portable PC gaming devices. DualSense haptics will a??lso be supported,?? if you wire one in over a USB connection.

A shocking spin of the web

If you don't own Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered, then no worries. This is a standalone entry. It's going for $49.99 on Steam and Epic, and pre-orders will net a few in-game goodi?es a little earlier than you'd norma?lly achieve them.

Miles' Spidey adventure is one I never got around to finishing on PlayStation 5, so the prospect of revisiting it is pretty appealing. It's received some high praise, and I like the idea of a short, cinematic Spider-Man game to zip through.

Nice to hear that portable PC devices are a consideration too, for those who have been picking up a Steam Deck now that they're extremely available. The Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered PC port wound up being pretty good, an??d I'd hope the same holds true for Miles Morales' hop over to?? computers.

Sony Interactive Entertainment and Insomniac Games have released a short trailer teasing the arrival of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC. The new port of the smash-selling PlayStation title will come wall-crawling onto Steam and Epic ?Games Store platforms sometime this fall.

Released in November 2020 as a PS5 launch title, The Marvel's Spider-Man pseudo-sequel follows the adventures of young Miles Morales, who is forced to step up his game as Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man when his home ??district of Harlem is severely threatened by the collateral dam??age of a war between greedy capitalists and a violent criminal element, led by the malevolent Tinkerer. Having only just discovered his calling as Spider-Man, Morales is pushed to hit the ground running in order to save his community from annihilation.

Much like its beloved predecessor Marvel's Spider-Man, Miles Morales was celebrated by both video game and comic-book fans for its authentic replication of the Spiderverse and its popular cast of characters. Critics praised the follow-up's slick and engaging gameplay, fluid combat, and improved range of side-missions and activities. This new port will represent the latest in an increasing catalog of PlayStation titles that are making the leap to the PC platform �a library that also includes games from popular Sony franchises including Uncharted, God of War, and Horizon Zero Dawn.

The console is the fastest-selling in the company's history

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced ?today that sales of the PlayStation 5 have passed 10 million units globally since its launch last Nove?mber.

In a press release, the console manufacturer confirmed the PS5 is outpacing its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, which was Sony's previous record holder for fas??test-selling consol??e.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan also addressed ongoing shortages of the consoles. "??While PS5 has reached more households faster than any of our previous consoles, we still have a lot of work ahead of us as demand for PS5 continues to outstrip supply," said Ryan.

Ryan also spoke to Reuters, saying the current chip shortage is "definitely a challenge that we are all navigating" and th??at it may take a little while for PlayStation 5 demand to be m??et.

"We've built more PlayStations faster than we ever have before which ma?kes me happy," Ryan told Reuters. "But on the other hand, we're some time from being able to meet all the demand that's out there, wh?ich makes me feel bad."

Sony also provided some new sales numbers for its first-party titles in today's announcement. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has sold more than 1.1 million copies since its launch on June 11, while Returnal from Housem?arque has sold more tha??n 560,000 copies.

Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales has passed the 6.5 million copies sold mark since its launch on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 last November, and MLB The Show 21 has become the fastest-selling title in the franchise, with more than 2 million copies sold and 4 million players reached. This year also marked MLB The Show's debut on both Xbox and Xbox Game Pass.

The year ahead still has a few big-name PlayStation 5 games, including Deathloop from Bethesda and Arkane, which is a PS5 console launch exclusive. Horizon Forbidden West is also still waiting to get its release date. Hopefully chip shortage issues can get cl??eared up by the time these big games start rolling out.
