The original Legacy Collection did

The original Mega Man Legacy Collection came with cheat sheets (it also had a 3DS version, but that's neither here nor there), so when people popped open Legacy Collection 2, they were disappointed that Capc??om didn't do the same with the sequel.

Fret not though, as the official Mega Man Twitter account has them, which run down the "correct" order for Mega Man 7-10. Personally, I always started with Burst Man in 7, Clown Man in 8, Concrete Man in 9, and Sheep Man in 10.

I don't think anyone wanted this though so much as a Switch version, as that Twitter account is getting lit up with Switch requests. I think the Disney Afternoon Collection would have been better suited though, given that everything on there was released on the NES.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 review

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 (PC, PS4 [reviewed], Xbox One)
Developer: Digital Eclipse, Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Release Date: August 8, 2017
MSRP: $19.99

I could talk for ages about any given Mega Man game, but I think the one I've debated most in my lifetime is 7. It's included in Mega Man Legacy Collection 2, and I think it's going to be j??ust as polarizing as i?t ever was.

The sprite work is zoomed in and clunky. The sound effects are sometimes muted or tinny. Depending on who you talk to it's either "part of the charm" or just janky design, and I'm more inclined to label it as the latter. Yet! The more you play it, the more it grabs you. It has some really great weapons like the Wolverine cosplay Slash Claw, some wonderful stages like Shade Man's silly castle of horrors, and a lot of series "firsts" like the inclusion of Bass, a proper shop, and a built-in one-on-one?? fighting game mode (which is still in!). It's worth going through at least once, is what I'm saying, and maybe more! I fa?ll under its spell in a crescendoing fashion as each year passes.

on the other hand I fell in love with immediately. From those horridly acted but adorable anime cutscenes to the haunting "see you in my dream" ?death cry from Clown Man, it was a treat. Having Ro??bot Masters actually speak to you made a world of difference, as did the vibrant animations that were full of life.

It also has a strong case for one of the best arsenals in the history of the series, bolstered by the highly technical Mega Ball weapon. Even the hotly debated "jump, slide" portions felt like a fun challenge to overcome, especially when coupled with one of the best soundtracks in Mega Man history. Don't sleep on this one!

Moving on to 9 and 10, things get even more complicated. Heralded as a return to form for the series, the core Mega Man line was subsequently put on ice after the latter, but the former is low key one of the best platformers ever made. Nearly every zone is made with speedrunning in mind, but if you never partake in leaderboards or YouTube uploads you wouldn't even notice it. I play through it every year as a tradition because of how clean it is -- it's like they assembled every 2D platforming prodigy in a room one day and they came up with Mega Man 9.

10 is still just as underwhelming as it always ways, but by no means a bad addition to the lot. Levels lack punch, Robot Masters are often reaching, and even with the inclusion of Bass on top of Proto Man, it feels like Capcom is just throwing more things at the wall to see what sticks. More development time would have really done them some good, as it often feels like a low-end fan game (which has been topped many times by the community since Mega Man was put on ice).

Exclusive to the Legacy Collection you'll find a challenge mode, museum, and an "extra armor" (less damage) toggle, which is a nice touch for people who think Mega Man is "unfair or cheap" (which it rarely is, but hey, if it gets them in it's done its job!). Save states also help back up the existing checkpoint system, which is nice even if you're just using them to re-live your favorite moments like the Proto Man boss fight in Mega Man 7. They need to really kick it up a notch though, becaus?e museums and other small additions aren't quite cutting it when there's so much more that could be done. Maybe even a minigame or two or an unlockable that was previously only available in Japan could sweeten the deal.

I'd be remiss then if I didn't mention the non-inclusion of Mega Man & Bass. Given the heavy presence of Bass in every game but 9, it made perfect sense to sort of unite the entire storyline togethe?r. The Game Boy Advance port would be the easiest to replicate, or Capcom could just put some effort into localizing and reworking the better-looking SNES edition. It didn't influence this review but it's something you should be aware of, and a topic Capcom has skirted in recent years by just claiming that the game isn't canon (even? if that only applies to one of its two storylines).

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is worth it for 9 alone, but you'll also get to experience several legacy games that were passed by. I'm still holding water for 8 all these years later, and due to some amazingly camp artwork and stellar animations, it's one of the most "showable" Mega Man games to date. I think a lot of people are going to be pleasantly surprised by it, as well as the near flawlessness of 9 -- even if 7 and 10 are just as wart-filled as they always were.

Why am I telling you this? Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is out!

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 is out on PC, PS4, and Xbox One this week, and one of its four included games is also one of the most polarizing. It's none other than Mega Man 7, which has a lot of shortcomings on to?p of a ton? of amazing Easter eggs like Proto Man's shield and of course, the famous fighting mini-game.

I've tested it out extensively in Legacy Collection 2 and can confirm it still indeed works. All you need to do is enter the following password, then hold L1+R1 (or LB+RB) and press start. Boom, you're in, ready to pit Mega Man and Bass against each other, m?ano-a-mano (boto-a-boto?).

Have fun!

Great art

Recent Mega Man games have been killing it with their art. Just look at the concepts for 9 and 10. Now, Legacy Collection 2 joins the fray.

As revealed by the PlayStation Blog, pre-ordering Legacy Collection 2 on PS4 will net you a free theme, which features artwork from Udon's Jeffrey "Chamba" Cruz. The text gives us a bit of background on Chamba's career and his experience with various childhood franchises, and why he gravitates toward Mega Man's robot masters -- there are even individual break?downs of several facets of the piece.

I really have to agree with the praise for the character design, as I always felt that Mega Man artists drew some of the most emotive eyes in the industry. I have a memory of fighting nearly every one of them from the very first time I took down Bomb Man through Sheep Man in 10.

Blue da ba dee ba

Putting it simply, you know what you're getting with Mega Man Legacy Collection 2. Essentially sharing the same package as its predecessor, Collection 2 gathers Mega Man 7 through 10 in one place. Nevertheless, curiosity persisted ?and I had to?? see whether or not it would be a fun time later down the line.

It pretty much is, but there's a little bit less excite?ment this time around.

If you've played the first collection, Collection 2 should feel strikingly similar to you. It includes the aforementioned titles, an art gallery, a music player, and several remix stage challenges. Mega Man 9 and 10 also include all of their post-release DLC for a more comprehensive package. Everything is unlocked from the jump, however, so only pure mega love of Mega Man will drive you toward completing each game. For the sake of this preview, I played through Mega Man 8 and 9 to see how?? the differing art styles were translated.

Mega Man 8 comes with the hilarious animated cutscenes, and it was quite a jolt of nostalgia when I laid eyes on it. The game itself is as solid as ever and hasn't lost anything in translation. Since I've played Mega Man 9 fairly recently, I tested out some of the visual gimmicks included in Collection 2 to see how they'd affect gameplay. Choosing to go wi??descreen and stretching my poor little pixelated bomber resulted in a quick death.

Regardless of how still-solid the Mega Man games are, only a few peopl?e are going to be drawn to this pac??kage. Since this kind of collection has been done in exactly the same way once before, the little additions definitely have less fanfare to them. And regardless of the DLC content included in the last two titles, there's just something extra missing from this.

6,900 yen

In typical fashion Capcom is going all out for a retro collection and not a new ??entry of something.

Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 was just announced this week for PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and the publisher already has a special edition planned in Japan, clocking in at 6,??900 yen (roughly $63, wheras the core ??game is $19.99). It'll sport five alternate covers, a rockin' thermos, a Robot Master cheat sheet (I dig these for collectible value), and the game.

Capcom did something like this for the ??first game, but with a Gold Mega Man amiibo on 3DS.

PC, PS4, Xbox One

The way Capcom has been handling legacy collections is interesting. They went all out on Mega Man Legacy on 3DS, even producing a limited run gold amiibo for it, but didn't return the favor with the Disney Afternoon Collection. It seems like 3DS owners aren't going to get the follow-up to Mega Man Legacy either.

Announced today by way of Capcom Unity, Mega Man Legacy Collection 2 will arrive in August on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Priced at $19.99 it'll include Mega Man 7, Mega Man 8, and Mega Man 9/10. There's also an "extra armor" half damage setting, checkpoint saves, and hardc?ore options on the other side of the spectrum with remi??xed stages and challenges, as well as the token museum mode.

That's not a bad collection, really. 7 and 8 are relatively obscure by general standards as most people tend to have nostalgia for the original NES series, and Mega Man 9 is one of the best in the entire genre. But i?f you want in you'll have to deal with a lack of a Switch version until Capcom sees ??the platform as a viable option.
