Never let anyone sever us again!

I’m of the opinion that the Mega Man X series went into a slow decline after the first game. 1993’s Mega Man X on Super Nintendo is easily one of my favorite games, then they just started getting progressively worse. Yes, I know there are many out there who love Mega Man X4 as much as the Super Nintendo titles. I am not among them. But that’s okay because I’m not here to badmouth Mega Man X4, we’re talking about Mega Man X6, which is two magnitudes worst than the lowest opinion of X4 could ever reach.

Ask anyone who recently decided to tackle the entire Mega Man X Legacy Collection in sequential order. It’s an absolutely miserable experience. To see a game series go from the most exciting things since a bread slicing machine to the most excruciating experience since a septic tank explosion; it taxes you. My husband requested I stop, as it was beginning to show signs of agitation, but I couldn't comply. Like reaching for the last pickle with a lacerated hand, it’s a great deal of pain for a small reward. What, I’m saying is: don’t do it. I’ll just tell you all about Mega Man X6 so we can move on with our lives.

Mega Man X6 Plain old fighting

The long-time captain of the series, Keiji Inafune, has said that he planned on the series ending with Mega Man X5, which is hilarious because that game is similarly terrible and he’s listed under the credits as “special thanks.�All the series' horribly blatant foreshadowing falls apart in X5, and it ab?solutely fails to bring resolution to anything.

Not that the Mega Man X games ever really told a coherent story. It starts off promisingly enough. The titular X was Dr. Light’s last invention; a robot with free will (implying the original Mega Man didn’t have free will, which does not compute). He’s sealed for diagnostics after Dr. Light’s death, but some guy comes along and puts a stop to that so he can reverse engineer X into a mass-produced line of knock-off androids called Reploids. The Reploids start going crazy, and humanity isn’t down with extinction, so a unit of non-crazy Reploids is created to hunt these “Mavericks.�/p>

Just to show you how daft this entire idea is, the humans try to move to the moon in Mega Man X8 using Re??ploids to help them build. The whole thing is tough to swallow to begin with, but then it just keeps fraying like an elevator cable.

Mega Man X6 Bromance

Speaking of which, the plot of Mega Man X6 is so mystifying to me, that I have to look up a synopsis every time I need to describe it. It’s three weeks after Sigma was defeated and X’s best friend, Zero, died in X5. It’s important to remember that both Zero and Sigma have di??ed before and come back, so what does death even mean in this universe?

Apparently �and I don’t actually remember this as part of the plot �Earth has been rendered uninhabitable, and all the humans have migrated below the surface to survive. A Reploid named Gate goes mad after searching the ruins of space colony Eurasia, weird nightmares start happening, and X misses Zero. It sounds like H.P. Lovecraft went through a bad break-up, got drunk, and wrote a Mega Man X fanfiction.

It gets worse, but it really hurts my head. There’s this other scientist aside from Gate who sends Reploids out to investigate the nightmares, but they go insane, too. And Zero is tied into this and is maybe the cause of the nightmares, be he pops up again, much to the unhinged delight of X and they promise to never be apart again. I’m not even exaggerating for comedic effect, I really can’t make sense of the narrative. I feel like I’m untangling Chr?istmas lights and one strand of them is c?onnected to a bomb that will go off if I can’t separate the nest of cables within three minutes.

Mega Man X6 Trauma

At the very least, the gameplay is standard Mega Man X. Nothing has really changed on that front. You charge your buster, dash jump across gaps, and pelvic thrust your way up walls. But then they apply all that tried-and-true action-platforming onto some truly ghoulish design. Some of its problems are blatant, and the others just beg the question “how did no one in testing find this annoying?�/p>

The defining moment of my playthrough was when I made my way through one of the final stages, found myself unable to complete a jump, and had to look up a solution. It turns out, I needed to be wearing a particular set of?? armor, and t??o equip it, I had to back out of the level and start over. Good game.

But this extends to all levels, which seem to be designed to communicate a strong discomfort. The most egregious are these moments where the screen goes dark, and the ?entire section is lit by these crossing beams of light that swivel from fixed positions. It’s not like you have any control over what portions of the screen you can actually see, so you’re just waiting on whatever is in front of you to become visible. Sometimes you take damage because there’s no way of avoiding it. It’s the game telling you that it doesn’t care if you have to eat shit, it’s still not giving you a spoon.

Mega Man X5 had this wrinkle in the formula where you had to beat four bosses to complete a project, then it had a random chance of succeeding. If it failed, you challenged the other four bosses for another random chance, and I’m? not joking when I say it could fail to and you could get the bad ending because the game hates? you.

Mega Man X6 isn’t that outwardly hateful. It highlights certain levels as red, meaning they're under the influence of the nightmare. This just means things within the stages have been rejiggered, which can sometimes allow you to reach different areas. It sounds like a great way to encourage multiple playthroughs,?? but really, there’s usually very little change. Oftentimes, blocks will just appear where they weren’t before.

The worst part is that there’s a greater focus on saving Reploids. X5 had the same thing where you saved people from the environment for bonuses, but X6 just uses it as a way to tell you to screw yourself. It will spawn enemies right next to the hapless Reploids the moment you step on screen, so the only way to reach them without knowing their position ahead of time, is to throw caution to the wind and dash?? towards them. Failing t??o reach them means a bonus item is removed from the game entirely unless you load and try again.

Avalanche

The Mega Man X series is like a meteor hit a landfill. From the highest point at the rim of the impact, it’s hard to believe that you’re a short decline from utter garbage. Playing X6 immediately a?fter playing the original title wo?uld probably give you whiplash. You can recognize them as related games, but the difference in quality is such a stark contrast.

Things improved slightly with Mega Man X7, then again with X8, but the series never recovered and just faded away after that. After Mega Man 11, a lot of people, including myself, are hopeful for a return of the series, but if we do that, I think we need to take a flamethrower to large parts of the series. There are things better left buried, but X6 is better left dismantled and melted for scrap.

Re-releases of retro games can be super finicky, especially depending on the platform and who is handling them. Technology that existed back then (think CRT monitors, legacy graphics processors like the Super FX chip) might not run as smoothly now -- a case that's most evident in the emulation community when folks try t??o ??get older projects running on newer hardware.

The Mega Man X Legacy Collection works great for me on PS4, but apparently on PC it has a few latent issues that need cleaning up. Capcom has just launched a new patch on Steam as a matter of fact, which addresses "screen blackouts" that impacted some users after launching the game up, and sets up an appropriate resolution. There's also another huge get: a V-Sync toggle. You can find this in the graphics section of the options m?enu now and Capcom notes that it may fix framerate issues on its own.

Super future fighting robot

I have thoughts on Mega Man. I mean, I've played every western release in the franchise, spinoffs included, but the entire saga has been a roller coaster ride; and that's putting it lightly. Like most of my all-time favorite properties (Zelda, Resident Evil to name a few) the quality of each game wildly varies and in some cases, plummets into the depths of the darkest oubli?ette.

Strap yourselves in, because it's time to talk about a particularly mercurial subseries thanks to the release of two new Mega Man X Legacy Collections. It's a double-review, folks!

Mega Man X (Collection 1)

The first collection is an absolute monster and Mega Man X is undeniably the biggest draw. This is a compilation of four of the greatest platformers of all time, and in the case of the original that kicked off the entire X universe, possibly the greatest.

Every time I play Mega Man X it feels like the very first time I picked up an SNES remote and discovered its secrets. It's one of the cleanest platformers ever made with quick responsive controls, a dash mechanic that pretty much set ??the tone fo?r every platformer after it, and an engaging upgrade system that doesn't fundamentally change the way you control its main character.

The far-future setting works so well because it reminds us enough of the era when Mega Man reigned supreme over the genre, but also provides its own spin on things with metropolis-laden backgrounds, new tech, and its own mysteries. Its baddies are more competent without getting into edgy territory, another natural evolution that helped make Mega Man relevant again for a new era.

There's no bloat here -- I can pick up Mega Man X at any point in my life and not feel bored playing it, despite having every single screen memorized. In 25 years absolutely nothing has changed; this is platfor??ming perfection (or as close to it as you can get).

Mega Man X2 (Collection 1)

Smartly Capcom didn't break a whole lot in the sequel. X's locomotion is still fluid and you even start the game with the dash maneuver -- a rare? instance of allowing the player to feel powerful at the start of a sequel without going overboard.

Every other facet of X2 follows that smart principle of slight iteration. There's more secrets to be found (most of which are a tad trickier to fi??nd), there's a hovercycle now, three boss "X-Hunters" are scattered across the game to give var??iance to each playthrough, and all of the upgrades are snappier. Capcom even stuck a processing chip (the Cx4) in to push the SNES and add wireframe effects. They tried everything basically, and at its worst its changes are harmless.

It's just enough to not enter the aforementioned bloat territory, and like X before it, X2 made its mark on the series with its memorable locales. I can vividly recall every single level, from the high-tech security vault of Magna Centipede to the shiny caverns of Crystal Snail. Even with the pressure to keep adding more the team took a tempered appr??oach to the series a??nd never went overboard.

Mega Man X3 (Collection 1)

X3 begins to approach that line of excess but never c?rosses it.

At this point the little subseries that could has built up its own fanbase, and with that burden comes fanservice. Vile is back from the grave after his defeat in Mega Man X, and Zero is now a su?mmonable character with limitations -- ?you can use him in some levels, and not the entire way through. X can also upgrade himself even further with select uber abilities beyond his normal capabilities -- but only one at a time (unless you get a special upgrade that's basically an Easter egg) -- allowing for more variety from run to run. Again, you can see Capcom's unwillingness to screw with the working formula too badly.

Give?n that it came out just a few m??onths before the Nintendo 64, this is an entry that deserves more recognition. An original SNES copy of X3 is exceedingly rare, so the more versions of it ??floatin??g around the better.

Mega Man X4 (Collection 1)

It took me a long time (about a year after its release) to come around to X4, but as I slowly began to pick up on its nuanc??es it grew on me.

Capcom had the Herculean task of converting a series that was ostensibly at home on the SNES (I know X3 had PS1/Saturn ports four months later) to the PlayStation. Unintentionally bad anime cutscenes weren't even a new thing -- they were perfectly present in Mega Man 8) -- they just went for it again, creating an early set of memes (prepare yourself?!) that turned large cro??wds off from the new direction entirely.

Under the surface of silly accents X4 was an impressive platformer that would continue to redefine Mega Man as a whole for years to come. They went with the bold move to make Zero fully playable from the start, without strings, and it paid off. The narrative took a grittier turn, and vocal performances aside, it was one of the first times I was actually invested in a Mega Man storyline. Bringing back the personality of the Mavericks (bosses) in the same vein as Mega Man 8 was a brilliant move.

Amazingly the visual style and gameplay hold up even today, but the X series? would only go downhill from here -- a turn that's conveniently housed on its own collection.

Mega Man X5 (Collection 2)

Excuse me for a moment while I go to bat for Mega Man X5. While it's mostly known for voice actress and localization team member Alyson Court's infamous Guns N' Roses references (which are now gone), there's a lot to like about X5.

It houses one of the best soundtracks in all of Mega Man from the talented trio of Naoto Tanaka, Naoya Kamisaka, and Takuya Miyawaki. You can swap between Zero or X whenever you want between stages. Ducking, a staple concept that's was extremely polarizing at the time, is in, and adds new nuances to boss fights with an additional movement ability. The overarching narrative, which was supposed to be the culmination of the entire Mega Man sa??ga, has an air of finality and tension to it, complete with multipl??e endings.

Its main strike against it is that several stages are bland and lack the unique punch the X series? typically brings. You cou?ld really see Capcom running out of steam here in real time even if the engine was still running.

Mega Man X6 (Collection 2)

The story of how Mega Man X6 went into production can only be described as unfortunate. The father of the character, Keiji Inafune, had given Capcom so much since he and his team crammed for the original NES series, and as eventual payment, X6 was greenlit without his involvement. Remember, this is after he had given us his definitive end to the series in X5. Oops!

While a disjointed story isn't going to make or break a Mega Man game, this series of events spilled over into X6 as a whole, which leaned far too hard on borrowing existing ideas and made them worse. That said Mega Man X6 is far from "unplayable." It has its moments (fighting a half-insane rebuilt Sigma is pretty incredible) and several levels are impressive by any measure. Like X5 several themes encroach memorable territory, like Commander Yammark's chill stage music that sounds like it would fit in a Pure Moods CD.

The real damage wasn't done until X7 rolled around.

Mega Man X7 (Collection 2)

I get why Capcom felt the need to force 3D elements into Mega Man X7 so it didn't fall behind the times, but it just wasn't good enough for the 3D platformer market at the time as it had been surpassed bef??ore?? it was even out. It's even worse by today's standards.

Capcom went the way of "Sonic Friends" by adding in Axl: a character that would eventually become more fleshed out in Command Mission (which isn't part of either collection, sadly), but felt largely pointless here. Axl's sluggish lock-on gun is painful to use, and Zero's melee style is slightly more engaging. Mega Man X, the titular character that you c?an start off with in every game...is gated behin?d a collectathon. The hits keep coming!

It hasn't aged well in just about every respect. An option to skip the slow-moving frequent in-game cutscenes should have been available in this collection and the pain of having to watch them again after a death is unreal. Heck, it almost would have been better if there was a blank menu option instead of X7. The experiment went so poorly that Capcom backpedaled with the improved X8

Mega Man X8 (Collection 2)

You get an immediately sunnier vibe starting up Mega Man X8. Every bit of dialogue can be skipped for one, the UI looks better, and the flow is so much quicker. Oh, and all three characters are available from the start, the 3D bits (with a few exceptions) were removed in favor of full 2.5D platforming, and there's some attempt at innovation with team-attack supers. The way Capcom completely undid every stumble from X7 is poetic.

Even with that in mind you can see the desperation in moves like bringing back Vile again, a classic X character that had been retired since X3. The Maverick (boss) roster, which had started to decline ever since X5, is still stuck in a murky mire of unmemorable designs. X8 gets unfairly lumped in with X7, but as a? ?result of this collection it can make its mark on history again.

X Challenge and extras (Both Collections)

If you happen to loathe some specific bits of any game you can swap to "Rookie Hunter Mode" at any point, which reduces damage and in some cases neuters spikes and pits. There isn't an instant save state function but you can save after every level (in addition to the password system from X-X3). That's all small potatoes -- expected fundamentals ??from a compilation.

But you really have to hand it to Capcom for including the X Challenge conceit -- a full blown boss arena mode -- on top of the usual gallery content (which is fantastic and informative, littered with text on top of artwork). There's a handful of stages with two bosses each, which are battled at the same time. You get to load up with three weapons first (in addition to your standard X-Buster, or, if you choose, just your X-Buster) and swa?p between easy, normal, and hard difficulties with no strings attached. It's the enhanced boss gauntlet mode I've been wanting since the start of the series.

I think what I love most about it is the juxtaposition of the character models from later series entries with the very early 1993 spritework of the original Mega Man X. It works far better than it deserves to, and Capcom managed to hand-pick enemies that are not only thematic, but mesh mechanically (it's fun getting knocked into an ice breath from Chill Penguin by a Frost Walrus slam). Likewise air-dashing over bosses or locating brand new weaknesses where it wasn't possible before (because those upgrades didn't exist in their games) makes these decades-old games feel fre?sh again.

Keep in mind that this mode spans both compilations, so even with the several lackluster choices in the second X Collection you're still getting X Challenge. While it's clear that Capcom tried to think of every possible way to help sell the second pack when the fir?st compilation sells itself, it's a valid addition nonetheless. Just don't get too excited for all the pageantry -- the rumored story is basically nonexistent.

Mega Man has a long and storied history as an alienating series. Although i??t can be easier to pick up if you stick with it, some opening segments for select games have proven to be a pain for some; an?d for years folks have left the memories of them abandoned to rot. No more!

Since it's by far the most requested entry for a tips guide from readers, here's a short rundown of how to nab some of the more difficult trophies/achievements in the first Mega Man X Legacy Collection.

Reconnaissance Complete - View 20 images across all four titles, then change the wallpaper to the secret image

This is a poorly worded bit of text. Based on th??e phrasing you'd thin?k that viewing 20 images would unlock the secret image. Nope!

You have to beat a game then make the unlocked image your wall??paper after viewing 20 images in the options menu gallery.

Note: You get one secret w??allpaper for finishing one game, and another for finishing all four.

Audio Signal Incoming - Listen to 10 tracks for long enough with the Music Player, and then listen to the secret track

Same thing here: you don't pop the challenge by listening to 10 songs.? Instead you'll need to unlock the secret track by completing the new X Challenge Mode.

Nobody Nose My Sorrow - Cut off Flame Mammoth's trunk in Mega Man X

This one is a bit unintuitive since Fl??ame Mammoth's weakness is Storm Eagle's Storm Tornado, but if you use Boomer Kuwanger's Boomerang Cutter, it'll lop his nose o?ff.

If you miss out on this one during your first run through every stage you can kn?ock the challenge out in the Sigma levels when you fight Flame Mammoth again.

Take Your Time - Watch Morph Moth's metamorphosis in Mega Man X2 without interfering

Another simple challenge that's not immediately obvious. Just don't attack Morph Moth at all until he changes his state. The same principle ??applies ?for Sigma stages, you get another crack at this.

He Brought Fists to a Mech Fight - Use a Ride Armor to score the final hit against Magma Dragoon in Mega Man X4

Near the end of the Magma Dragoon level there's a ride armor suit available. Grab it and carefully make your way through the flames so the ??armor doesn't lose all of its health before the boss battle. Go under the main ??route and punch open the rocks to start the fight.

Then, simply jump out of the ride armor and battle Magma Dragoon as normal. When he's? very low health hop?? back in and kill him with it. You'll unlock the challenge.

Mega Man X guide

In the Heart of Battle - Learn the Hadoken in Mega Man X

Capcom really hid this special Street Fighter move Easter egg well -- so well that the process is really wacky and involves dying several times on purpose.? Oh, and if you reset your ?game you'll lose your ability to wield it.

What you need to get the Hadoken is at least four lives and every item in the game (all levels completed, all heart and subtanks). If you need lives fast the video method linked here works well.

Then head back into Armored Armadillo's level and leap off of the final cart ride onto the ledge just above ??the boss door and jump off the cliff. Repeat that three times and you'll see a new upgrade waiting for you (use the down, quarter-circle forward, shot motion to use it when you have full health). Y??ou can also quit the level instead of dying and repeat this process, but using the checkpoint to unlock the Hadoken is much faster.

Attack Me if You Dare - Learn the Shoryuken in Mega Man X2

Mega Man X2 has a similar Street Fighter homage with the Shoryuken move. To unlock it you'll need to beat every level and acquire every upgrade (just l?ike last time).

Then progress to the third Sigma level until you g?et to a ladder outside of your reach just after the floating platform section. Use the Crystal Hunter weapon to freeze the bat and boost up. Then after the spikes slide down the left wall into a hidden room.

Zero Squared - Gather all of Zero's parts and get rescued by the resurrected Zero in Mega Man X2

If you go for the above challenge you'll unlock this by default with the Zero parts. Near the culmination of the story you'll? have saved Zero and will pop the trophy/achievement.

He Wanted You to Have This - Receive Zero's beam saber in Mega Man X3

This is probably the easiest spec??ial item to unlock.

Locate Vile, an optional boss, before? you finish all eight Maverick stages (my recommendation is to just find him in the easy to locate Crush Crayfish pod, which is in a false floor directly following the bit where the spike enemy smashes through the construction site).

Fight the mech as normal then kill Vile with the Ray Splasher (from Neon Tiger), his weakness -- this will permanently destroy him. To be clear, you should not fight Vile until you have the Ray Splash??er. If you need a bit of an edge you can finish seven stages, get a ton of upgrades, then go ba?ck and fight him whenever you want. Near the start of the second Dr. Doppler stage (read: Sigma levels after the usual eight), press start, swap to Zero, and defeat the bug miniboss. You don't want to get grabbed by it -- so make sure y??ou dash to the right immediately w?ith Zero and unleash a charged shot/saber combo. Ding! Zero's saber is yours, just fully charge up your X-buster to use it.

I won't use it, but it's nice that it exists

The "should easy mode be a thi??ng" debate is so incredibly basic that I kind of just brush it off every t?ime I see it.

Having been raised on hardcore platformers and having spent hours analyzing iframes and combos in action games, I'm happy when something puts up a fight and gives me a challe?nge. If there's an opt?ional easy mode available so someone else can enjoy the same experience with me, it doesn't magically negate the fun I just had.

That's why I'm surprised at the reaction to the "Rookie Hunter Mode," an easy setting that was just unveiled for both Mega Man X Legacy Collections. Due out later this month the sets contain Mega Man X-X8, and Rookie Hunter is an option for every game. It halves damage, but it also removes spikes and pit deaths for X4-X8.

I know a ton of people who were turned off from X4 and X6 in particular by their difficulty, and now they can either just play on Rookie Hunter or practice on the setting and work their way up to a normal clear. More Mega Man X fans? Yes please.

Rock is dead

One of the weirder things about Mega Man X5's localization is that all of the Mavericks were named after members of washed-up rock group Guns N Roses. The decision actually came from Alyson Court, the voice actress behind Claire Redfield for a number of Resident Evil titles. She was married to Capcom USA's localization writer at the time and he was a massive GnR fan. He had asked her to name them after members of the band and the rest is history. Thankfully, the upcoming Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 will be more faithful to the ori??ginal intention of the games.

In a statement given to GameSpot, a Capcom spokesman said, "In our mission to make these collections an authentic Mega Man X experience, we took the opportunity to better align the naming of the Mega Man X5 Mavericks across all regions for better narrative cohesion across the series, making the names more aligned with the original Japanese version release. We hope that fans appreciate our intent to unify the Mega Man X Maverick-na??ming conventio?n all these years later."

While I don't personally hate Guns N Roses, it never really made sense to have these incredibly stupid names in Mega Man. It was so out of place with the rest of the series and didn't even really pay homage to the group in a passionate way. This isn't like how Lemmy Koopa is named after Lemmy Kilmister, for instance. Also, Axl Rose is a colossal asshole, so I'd rather we not even pay homage to him.

X Gon' Give It To Ya

A lot of things seem to be going right for the Mega Man X Legacy Collection. The first pack especially contains some of the most incredible platformers? of all time (X1-X4), and we've learned that the packs are com?ing with a gametype unique to the re-releases -- X Challenge.

This mode will pit Mega Man X against enemies from various points in the subseries' history, and mishmashes several games together. Earlier this? week it came to light that it will have a story mode of some kind, and thanks to Famitsu a few more details are now known.

Evidently the rumored new armor type is confirmed, as X will don a new white/blue variant armor based on the Ultimate Armor that debuted in X4. You can also choose up to three special weapons to bring along when you start the challenge (of nine), which range from X1-X6. This all but confirms that X7 and above will not be included in th?e set of challenges, both in terms of weaponry and bosses.

It'll also sport 27 stages, difficulty levels (yes!), and different bosses depending on which volume you're playing (1 or 2), as well as online leaderboards. Yep, this is pretty much a hardcore Mega Man fan's dream.

Linked with X Challenge

Some people criticize Capcom for farming nostalgia, putting up classics of yesteryear in a compilation with little to no extras to show for it. I guess it depends on what you're looking for in a compilation, but Capcom is seemingly going the extra mile for Mega Man X Legacy Collection 1+2 wh?en it's released in July on PC??, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.

We already knew about the rad new "X Challenge" mode that showcases bosses from several different eras of the series, but according to Famitsu, X Challenge will also sport its own story mode. Now we don't know what that will entail, and whether or not the "story" will be told through a few quick dialogue boxes, but the rumor is it'll feature a new armor type never seen before in the X franchise.

So far Duff McWhalen, The Skiver, Commander Yammark, and Blizzard Wolfang are confirmed for "X Challenge 1," and nothing is confirmed yet for "X Challenge 2." Yes, each X Collection entry will have its own challenge mode.

For the two legacy collections

Both Mega Man X Legacy Collections are coming on July 24, and as it turns out we're getting a decent amount of original content alongside of the standard re-releases of Mega Man X1-X8.

In addition to some new gallery extras and the brand new "X Challenge" mode that pits you against multiple bosses, we're getting new music, to??o. Capcom just put up a quick sample on their YouTube channel, which you can listen to below.

I'll say it definitely sounds like something more inline with something the series would host from around the X5-X6 era -- combined with a hint of SNK at the start -- I can dig?? it.

I'm really into the idea of X Challenge

Capcom TV did another one of its lively streams, and in addition to showing off some upcoming features for existing games like Monster Hunter: World, they also gave some screentime to the Mega Man X Collection series, which will be hosting Mega Man X-X8 by way of two packs.

Starting at roughly 3:16:00 of the four hour long video, the publishers gives us some insight into?? the extras of the pack (mostly artwork and the Day of Sigma ani??me short), as well as a brief look at the games and the concept of the "X Challenge" game mode.

As a reminder, the latter pits Mega Man X against two bosses at once -- the demonstration involves Frost Walrus from X4 and Chill Penguin from X. An important aspect of this mode is that ?you're using advanced X kit from future games on old bosses like Chill Penguin. It's almost like an official ROM hack!

Nintendoes

You'll find a lot of debate on what the best version of Mega Man X3 is, but for the purpose of Capcom's upcoming Mega Man X Legacy Collection, the SNES original is going to be represented over the PS1, Saturn or PC ports. Maybe this has to do with music or licensing issues, but I'm sure some people will be upset over this decision (while other a?re probably rejoicing).

Capcom has also confirmed it is working internally on the collection, instead of Digital Eclipse. This will come as a surprise considering the previous Mega Man collections, the Disney Afternoon collection and the upcoming Street Fighter Anniversary collection are all developed by Digital Eclipse.

Oddly enough, the PS1 port was included in 2006's Mega Man X Collection released for the PS2 and GameCube. I'm not sure why that was (??or why this is being changed now), but if you've never tried the SNES version, now is your time.

The ratings board rumors have been confirmed: the Mega Man X Legacy Collection will actually be two collections, as officially stated by the below video from C??apcom.

The first pack will contain X1-X4, the titles most X fans consider to be the bread and butter of the series, and the second will house X5-X8, the collective black sheep of the franchise. As usual art gallery extr?as are included, and the platforms are re-confirmed as PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Switch for a July 26 release date in Japan.

At the end of the video Capcom also teases a wacky new mode -- the "X Challen??ge," which has two bosses from different games on-screen simultaneously.
