Tactical RPG Triangle Strategy is headed to Meta Quest, Square Enix announced today. The popular RPG is currently only available on PC and Nintendo Switch, but this Halloween you'll be able to manage the battlefield of Triangle Strategy in full VR on the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5Y7dKcwZnY

I'm still not really on the VR train, but for those who are, Triangle Strategy could be an actual solid entry onto the platform. Even though it's not necessarily a traditional idea, being able to get a birds-eye view of the grid-like battlefields could be very advantageous with the experience Triangel Strategy offers.

According to Square Enix, the Meta Quest version of Triangle Strategy will ut?ilize 360-degree 3D movement on the playfield and supports the Meta Quest's Passthrough feature which meshes the gam?e environment with real-world surroundings to further the immersion even more.

Triangle Strategy is a deep tactical RPG from the team behind Octopath Traveler and Bravely Default. With its stylish HD pixelated art style, Triangle Strategy could be a solid choice for porting into VR. Eric Van Allen reviewed Triangle Strategy when it was released on Switch back in early 2022, calling it "a perfect blend of strategy and RPG" and stating that despite its faults, "Triangle Strategy is ultima?te??ly the tactical RPG I was hoping it would be."

Pre-orders are available now on the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 with a 13% discount ahead of Triangle Strategy's ??Meta Quest release on October 31, 2024.

Back in 2021, we shared the news that GTA San Andreas would be making its way to the Meta Quest 2. That was a head scratcher from the get go, because despite being the highest-selling PS2 title of all time, San Andreas already felt quite dated to b?e announced as one of the biggest things in the platform's horizon.

The good news is that you now have plenty of time to ponder the choice, as IGN has just confirmed that the development of San Andreas VR is now on indefinite hold.

One of the most mind boggling parts of San Andreas VR, is that even three years later we never really learned much about it. The only written intel anyone ever got about it was Meta's claim that it was a project long in the making. The on??ly visual information we got was ?the logo that the company showed during the announcement.

The San Andreas logo

It's extra strange because Meta had previously seen success in bringing Resident Evil 4 to VR, and Rockstar had previously published LA Noire: The VR Case Files, an apt reimagining of the original game that was meant to be played on the HTC Vive. You'd expect that over three years later, the company would've at least provided us with one relevant update on the project, but this is all we have so far, and could be the last we end up hearing out of San Andreas VR.

This news comes after we learned that Meta's VR games endeavor is costing the company immense amounts of money, with losses of up to $16 billion dollars in 2023 alone. The reported hiatus in the development of San Andreas VR migh?t be a direct result of a cost-cutting action, though Meta only states that its working on other projects.

Though this is not officially a cancellation, it would not be the first time that we'd see the cancelation of ports of highly successful Rockstar titles. Back in 2022, we learned that the company had reportedly cancelled a much in-demand PC remaster of Red Dead Redemption in response to the poor reception of the Grand Theft A?uto: The Trilogy ?The Definitive Edition. Then again, anyone actually interested in experiencing San Andreas in VR need not feel that bad, as we just very recently learned via a slip-up that the Red Dead Redemption PC port might be in the cards once again.

Today Meta announced “a? new era for mixed realityand unveiled a surprising plan to let third-?party developers use its operating system.

The newly rename?d Meta Horizon OS will bring the Quest and Rift OS to new, more specialized devices, and the company already announced some of its new collaborators. ASUS is working on a “performance gaming headsetas part of its Republic of Gamers brand. Lenovo is making “mixed reality devices for productivity, learning, and entertainment, and Microsoft is partnering with ??Meta to make an Xbox-inspired Quest device. Handy, considering you can use a beta version of Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Quest.

Meta is taking some inspiration from Google’s Android OS here, and the company drew a clear parallel in its announcement, writing: “As we’ve seen with the PC and smartphone industries, consumers are best served by a broad hardware ecosystem producing both general-purpose computing devices and?? more specialized products, all running on a common platform. This move could make Meta’s OS the go-to platform for VR and AR devices, and its hefty suite of partnerships is sure to push that front.

At the same time, Meta is also making some changes to its App Lab, a platform that lets just about anyone publish an app on Meta devices. The App Lab will now be openly featured in the also-newly renamed Meta Horizon Store, which should make finding the newest, strangest VR apps quite a bit easier. Alongside that, Meta is trying to promote more mixed reality experiences by allowing developers to apply for access to its “spatial app frameworkthat’s designed to make bringing mobile apps to the ?Meta Horizon OS easier.

It’s unclear how open Meta is going to be with its OS, but even if it’s only working with certain companies on Meta OS-powered devices, this could still be hugely impactful for VR and AR development. The Metaverse hasn’t really taken off, but with new devices like the Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3, and PlayStation VR 2, it’s an exciting time for VR in general and VR g??aming in particular. Personally, I’m still not sold on strapping a headset to my face to workout or jump on a Zoom with my coworkers, but any move that leads to even more high-quality VR games has my interest.

The Samba de Amigo Party Central DLC pack featuring a handful of K-pop bangers is out now. It includes tracks from popular bands BTS and FIFTY-FIFTY. Additionally, there's a pack highlighting Sega's own IP, like Rhythm Thief.

Publisher and developer Sega also confirmed a Persona DLC bundle arrives in October. This includes costumes based on Persona 5's Joker and Morgana.

You can download the following K-pop tracks now for Samba de Amigo Party Central:

  • "Dynamite" by BTS
  • "Permission to Dance" by BTS
  • "Cupid (Twin Version) - Sped-Up" by FIFTY FIFTY

For the Sega Music Pack, you'll get:

  • "Baka Mitai (Taxi Driver Edition)" from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio
  • "Go Go Cheer Girl!" from Space Channel 5: Part 2
  • "Rhythm Thief Theme" from Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure

At the end of October, the library grows again with the Phantom Thieves of Hearts Music Pack. As noted by Persona Central, Sega's Japan release includes Life Will Change, Rivers in the Desert, and Colors Flying High. The trio of songs are all from Persona 5 Royal, but there's still s?ome announcements left for fans hoping for other Atlus or Sega titles.

We'll also get the Virtual Singer Music Pack along?side the Joker and Morgana Costume & Accessories Pack next month.

Sega has two more music packs on the way sometime in November. We don't know what they entail just yet, but should see that confirmation soon. Nevertheless, there's a lot of Samba de Amigo Party Central DLC to look forward to.

Samba de Amigo: Party Central has previously included songs from the Sonic the Hedgehog series. They are "Escape from the City" from Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Frontiers' "I'm Here," "Open Your Heart" from Sonic Adventure, and "Reach for the Stars" from Sonic Colors: Ultimate.

As for those of you who've yet to dive into the party, Destructoid gave Samba de Amigo: Party Central a 6/10 review. "The controls are certainly an improvement from the Wii game,? but the game still suffers from a lack of input when you move sideways," the reviewer s?aid.

I can show you the Worlds

VRChat is a very interesting place. Perhaps it's not the first thing someone thinks of when it comes to a "VR Game," as the title originally started out as a social hub. It's birthed many memes and content through its years of life on the Oculus DK1 and Steam (and 4 on Meta Quest), but it's also evolved. Thanks to the introduction of Udon, VRChat's in-house coding language, players are now able to build more complex worlds. This has led to a slew of new experiences, and most importantly, very impressive games. Here's a collection of 10 worlds that you need to see if you ever log onto VRChat.

[caption id="attachment_386986" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

10. Eccentric Rooms

Author: suzuki_i

Compatibility: PC Only

While this room is PC Only, it's a great way to start off this list. It's not a game, nor is it a hangout spot. Rather, Eccentric Rooms provides exactly what is shown in the title: a collection of rooms that bend the mind and show players what VRChat's Udon coding is capable of. Some of the highlights of the world incl??ude a room where you can walk on walls, a planetoid? where gravity allows you to walk on its surface, a third-person VR Camera, and a Recursive room, where a small room in the middle is a mirror of that exact room, and looking out from the open ceiling reveals a larger you staring in.

This world is fun to explore on your own, but it's recommended you grab some friends (and surprise them with this world) and try out the many rooms available, as some of them won't make sense without other pl?ayers.

9. Power Stars!/Power Stars 2!

Author: DSMT

Compatibility: PC & Quest

These two worlds share the same spot, as they're technically the same idea. Power Stars (and Power Stars 2) ports two levels from Super Mario 64 into VRChat using Udon. Power Stars includes Bob-Omb Battlefield, while Power Stars 2 contains Whomp's Fortress. Both worlds include every star from each level, including the 100-coin star, as well as functional can?nons, boss fights, and Mario's ground pound, triple-jump, and long jump.

The world i??sn't co-op, so each player will have to complete each star on their own, but having everyone in the same instance will allow players to race. Completing the world will net you? the wing cap in Power Stars 1, and the Owl in Power Stars 2 as a reward. Author DSMT has also listed speedrun times on Power Stars 2, so if you're a fan of speedrunning, attempt to snag a spot on the leaderboard!

8. Udon Sword II

Author: KOMETARO

Compatibility: PC Only

Udon Sword II brings classic dungeon crawling into VRChat, allowing four players to make their way through a dungeon, each with their own intricate classes. Players can take on Udon Sword II as a Tank, Healer, Archer, or Monk, each with their own abilities. The Tank can pro??voke enemies to attack them, while Healers can cast multiple spells from their book.

It's a lengthy dungeon, and it's best if you bring along some friends for the quest. It's a must-visit for? players who want to take on hordes of enemies with a band of adventurers.

7. Instagib Tournament

Author: ville672

Compatibility: PC & Quest

Instagib Tournament is exactly what it says in the title. This brings the classic action of Unreal Tournament's Instagib modifier into VRChat. Supporting up to 12 players, (or bots if you're playing solo) you'll spawn into two high-rise towers with a railgun. It'??s a free-for-all deathmatch where your only chance for survival is your quick reflexes and fast moves, as the clock ticks down and the frag limit determines the winner.

Instagib Tourname??nt also include?s a double-jump modifier, so players can really test out their movement abilities, as well as an announcer for when you go on a killing spree.

[caption id="attachment_386989" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

6. Scanner

Author: Trixelized

Compatibility: PC & Quest

Transitioning to a more cerebral world, Scanner allows players to team up and uncover a hidden environment using LiDAR scanners. The world is completely pitch-black, and impossible to see; though, by using the LiDAR scanner, you can unveil the world and explore its hidd??en secrets.

Multiple players can see what other??s have scanned, and you're able to choose how long the scan lingers before de-spawning. There are multiple hidden areas to explore, as the world is quite large, and while you can see through the walls, you can't pass through them. Your onl??y means of navigation being the Scanner in your hand.

Also hidden throughout the world are floating qu??estion marks, each one unlocking a new theme for your scanner. With environments like a bedroom, a library, and even a graveyard hidden in the world, you'll spend a lot of time trying to find everyth??ing Scanner provides.

5. Super Tower Defense

Author: DragonCookie

Compatibility: PC & Quest

Super Tower Defense is a simple world, but it's a highly engagin??g one. Players can work together to defend their stack of hearts from the oncoming invasion of small cars using powerful weaponry. Using items like a Minigun, a Rocket Catapult, or even the powerful Miracle, this simple tower defense game becomes m??ore complex as you work together to find which towers synergize as you take on the endless waves of cars.

However, even after you beat the game at wave 50, you can continue into an endless mode as?? cars become more and more powerful. Some upgrades require you to sacrifice heart?s in conjunction with your cash, but boast an even higher tier of power.

4. EvolvedAnt Arcade

Author: EvolvedAnt

Compatibility: PC & Quest

EvolvedAnt Arcade bring??s the delightful memory of arcades and indoor playpens into the VR experience. The world spans multi??ple sections, allowing players to explore and play to their heart's content. Sporting an indoor play space with climbable walls, a ball pit, and enough tubes to make your head spin, players can either explore the play space or engage in a game of tag, complete with silly chase music emanating from the person who's "It."

Also included in the world is a trampoline park, allowing players to bounce around and toss large billiard balls int??o hoops, the hoops themselves are in the same spot for everyone, so trying to score into the hoop before? someone else can is a great way to challenge your friends.

Furthermore, the arcade provides multiple games for players to try. While this section of the world is the most unfinished, it does sport a functional version of Tetris (called Udontris), Flappy Bird, and Pop the Lock. With its most recent update, the arcade also introduced its own take on Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, allowing players to take on a custom bomb ??wit??h its own manual.

Lastly, walking down the hallway (where the floor fun??ctions as a working piano) players reach the Party room, complete with a video player to upload your own tunes, and a dance fl?oor for when the party really starts!

3. Gun Em Down VR

Author: Dinky_

Compatibility: PC & Quest

Gun Em Down VR is a high-stakes 8v8 team deathmatch game inspired by old-school World War 2 Call of Duty titles. The game sports a fully functional ranking system, with each level unlo?cking something new.

Players can save? their progress by snapping a picture of the code found on the typewriter next to their l??oadout, allowing them to leave the world, and pick up right where they left off.

The title sports fo??ur weapons for the Axis and Allies teams, as well as multiple perks, and functional killstreaks like a Scout Plane, a Care Package, and of course, plenty of Air Strikes.

Each w?eapon is manually reloaded, having players chamber rounds with the bolt action of their sniper, or insert the clip into their Garand, hearing the classic ping when they run out of ammo.

For players wanting a classic Call of Duty experience in ??VR, Gun Em Down offers this in spades.

2. Maple's Kuso House

Author: MapleJava

Compatibility: PC & Quest

Stepping away from games, Maple's Kuso House is a classic VRChat hangout world, pe??rfect for when you're? winding down after world hopping with friends. The world sports a cozy home, with plenty of simple trinkets and locations to enjoy.

Inside the house, player??s can find a video player in the living room to play some videos or music, and the bar in the back allows players to mix together colors to make fancy drinks. Upstairs in the house, you can find a functional billiards table, supporting 1v1, or 2v2 games. Also upstairs is a bedroom with a computer, a couch, and a bathroom with a working faucet and shower head.

While the room is mostly for show, the hidden harmonica behind the bedroom couch unlocks a portal in the living room to a mystical island in space, with a mirror for players who want to admire the???ir avatars.

However, the main attraction of the world is outside. The house sits on a beach, where?? players can take a crack at Suikawari, or Watermelon Splitting. Out on the dock of the beach, players can also find four fishing rods, which can be cast into the water, and allow players to fish? for some of the many creatures in the sea.

However, if you're u??nlucky (or lucky) enough, you may find yourself reeling in a sandal, or ev?en a boot!

1. Fate of the Irbloss

Author: xCirrex

Compatibility: PC Only

The final spot on this list goes to Fate of the Irbloss. It's a fully functional co-op space adventure based on FTL: Faster than Light, Eve Online, and Freespace. Up to five players will take one of many roles?? as the crew of the rickety spaceship, The Irblo?ss.

Players can join in on the ship as either the Pilot, Weapons, Shields, or Hacker, each with their own duties and responsibilities. However, space isn't a forgiving place and ple?nty of people are out to blast you into stardust. As your ship is attacked by enemies, you'll need to make repairs. Whether it's fires in the hallway, breaches in the ship draining oxygen, or invaders hijacking your teleporter, you'll need to use your secondary class to determine the most effective way to solve these problems, using your?? blaster to dispatch the invaders, or using your welding gun to repair crucial parts of the ship.

Each victory nets you scrap, which you can use to upgrade your ship, increasing its evasion, its shield capacity, or the power of your hacking. You can also spend your scrap at shops as well to repair your ship, buy some new weapons, or purchase passive abilities that make your voyage easier, such a?s the ability to not consume missiles upon us??e, or drones to help repair your ship.

Fate of the Irbloss is the closest thing to a full game inside VRChat, complete with three separate endings, which you'll have to discover yourse?l?f.

The Impact of VR on Resident Evil

[Everyone welcome Smangaliso to the Destructoid front page! They'll be working for us in a freelance capacity, and they have an extensive career in games writing; most recently producing some really interesting work on the Horizon, Zelda, Pokemon, and The Last of Us franchises. They're a great fit for Destructoid, and we're excited to have them.]

Over the years, Resident Evil has repeatedly reinvented itself. Some experiments, like the focus on action-oriented gameplay, haven't always been a hit, though some changes, such as the use of a first-person perspective, have managed to breathe new life into the franchise. In recent times, Resident Evil has bee?n dipping its toes into virtual reality (VR), and the results have been nothing short of phenomenal.

Since Resident Evil 7 received its VR mode in 2017, the series has remained the go-to spot for the scariest virtual reality experiences. Most recently, Resident Evil Village's VR mode has continued carrying the torch on the PS VR2, and gamers can look forward to Resident Evil 4's remake also receiving a VR mode. Judging by the success of Capcom's experiments, VR could be an integral part of RE's future if wielded correctly.

Resident Evil 7 is already a pretty terrifying game when played in pancake mode. When things are taken to into VR, a whole new realm of horror is introduced. It isn't possible to simply turn away from a scary scene anymore, leaving players feeling truly trapped in Ethan's nightmare as he tiptoes throughout the Baker family's house. The action elements that the franchise has increasingly embraced also benefit from VR, as the gunplay is far more realistic. Players now have to physically reload and cock their weapons before firing, which become?s an overwhelmingly intense task when hordes of enemies are approaching.

[caption id="attachment_370562" align="alignnone" width="1200"] Screenshot by Destructoid.[/caption]

Perhaps the greatest impact that VR has had on Resident Evil can be found in the way it has been able to revitalize titles, giving gamers a good reason to return to games they've already completed. This is true for Resident Evil Village which feels brand new when played in VR. The scares are taken to new heights, the gunplay is more involved, and the environments feel more immersive than ever. The same is also the case with Resident Evil 4, a game that was originally released in 2005. Its VR version, released in 2021 for the Quest 2, was more than enough of a reason?? to revisit the classic.

VR in Resident Evil 4 Remake and Beyond

The size of the player base the Resident Evil VR games have generated gives a good indication of just how powerful virtual reality has been in intensifying the franchise's popularity and dominance within the horror genre. According to Capcom's official stat tracker, Resident Evil 7 VR has been played by over 1.17 million players, and this is a shocking number when one remembers that the PS VR has sold around five million units. Furthermore, at launch, Resident Evil 4 VR was the fastest-selling game of all time on the Quest 2. This is a clear indication of how well the franchise thrives in virtual reality, and the potential it has as a trailblazing VR h?orror franchise.

What is most striking about the franchise's foray into VR is that, despite providing unmissable horror experiences, the games are undeniably flawed. With Resident Evil 7, this is most apparent with the visuals which take a significant nosedive in VR mode. In Resident Evil Village, interacting with one's surroundings is sometimes an immersion-breaking experience because not everything is manipulable. Resident Evil 4's upcoming VR mode has a chance to learn from the mistakes of its predecessors, though it is not likely to be flawless as, like RE Village, it is not a native VR title.

Nevertheless, VR paints a deliciously dark future for Resident Evil. The platform could continue to be used to revitalize classics, with Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake being prime candidates. The revitalizing power of VR could also be applied to some of the less popular entries in the series, including Resident Evil 6. In addition to bringing renewed attention to the franchise's best titles, it would also help to cement RE's reputation as one of the scariest experiences available in VR. With virtual reality gaming still in its adolescent stage, RE has the chance to establish itself as a leader in VR horror, much like it has, through years of impa?ctf?ul entries, made itself synonymous with the survival horror genre.

Although virtual reality gaming is certainly not new, it still feels like the platform is gaining its footing as it tries to establish itself as a worthy companion to traditional gaming. Resident Evil has made the transition easier for some, as it illustrates that the platform is not only capable of providing full-scale AAA experiences, but it is also able to greatly enhance them. Though the franchise still has a long way to go before it presents a p?erfect VR horror experience, it already seems to be miles ahead of many of its competitors.

The OG Zelda game like we've never seen it before

Of all the games to be modded into VR, the original Legend of Zelda game was near the bottom of my list in terms of expectations. Usually when a game goes VR, it's already got a 3D art style, but I have to admit adding a whole new dimension to a title, especially such a classic one, is a really intriguing idea. Now we get a chance to see what that experience is like, because Japanese modder and retro gaming enthusiast Sugar Noe posted a video of themselves playing The Legend of Zelda to both Twitter and YouTube, as originally reported by Nintendo Life.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vNA8-UE780

In 2021, a user named DeTwelve created a mod called The Legend of Doom, which faithfully recreates The Legend of Zelda in the engine of the original Doom. Then Sugar Noe took that mod and made their own tweaks so that it would be playable on a Quest VR headset. This thing has layers, but the final result has to make for one of the most immersive Zelda experiences ever.

I played through The Legend of Zelda with a friend a few years ago on his SNES Classic, but admittedly I wasn't too intrigued considering how much the game showed its age, if you can pardon my blasphemy. We never finished it, but I will say that the added twist of playing it in VR might just be the push I need to get the very first Zelda game under my belt once and for all.

A side iteration, Quest Pro, was launched at the end of last year, with Meta tentatively sugges?ting that its next technology, Quest 3, will arrive at some point later this year.

Sony's own virtual reality technology, PSVR2, is set to launch worldwide on PS5 February 23.

Capitalism is coming for us all

We've all grown accustomed to the hellscape that corporations have created for us over the past few years, which is why I'm so intrigued by Martha is Dead publisher Wired Productions' new narrative adventure game, The Last Worker. The title, developed by Wolf & Wood, will explore "end-stage capitalism" in a setting that's "centered around our struggle in an increasingly automated?? world."

The Last Worker will feature a star-studded cast of voice actors, including Zelda Williams (The Legend of Korra), Tommie Earl Jenkins (Death Stranding), Jason Isaacs (The Death of Stalin), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Deep), Clare-Hope Ashitey (Children of Men), and David Hewlett (The Shape of Water).

Writer and director of The Last Worker Jö??rg Tittel expressed his excitement to be working on a game that the team fee??ls so passionately about:

"Work?ing with such a stellar cast would be miraculous enough on a major feature film or series. But to have such world class actors lend their talent to an indie game must make me the luckiest man alive. But ultimately this game has been an equaliser, w?ith every team member pouring heart and soul into every minute detail. No matter how dystopian they want to make the real world, ours at least will be full of colour and crafted with love."

The game's trailer shows off a bleak yet comedic tone and a cel-shaded art style similar to that of the Borderlands series. So far the gameplay is a bit of a mystery, although we know that exploration will be a big draw, as The Last Worker's Steam page boasts an environment that players will explore that is "the size of the ?sunken city of Manhattan."

Players will get an exclusive hands-on preview of The Last Worker this week at PAX East, and the game is set to?? release sometime in 2022 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Meta Quest 2.

The virtual reality Sorcerer's Apprentice gets underway this summer

Some games need a little bit of explanation to define, and others, it's easier with just a short clip or GIF. The Last Clockwinder falls somewhere in the latter area.

Developed by Pontoco and published by Cyan Ventures, The Last Clockwinder is a VR automation game. That's automation, like Factorio or Opus Magnum, crossing over with the world of virtual reality. It's coming to Meta Quest 2 and Ste??am VR, and well, you basically build a factory of yourself.

Players can do motions and then lock them in, making them loop in the form of an automaton. It starts ??with simple m??otions, like picking an object and tossing it to another person. And then it keeps growing. Here, just watch the trailer and see:

An army of one

There's just something really mesmerizing about this concept. Seeing all the motions start to flow together into a longer chain, then adapting to new steps in it. I think of all the times I had to pull up the roots of a system and re-do them in Satisfactory. Well, what if all those systems are little automated me's? Plus, look at the band playing. That ?looks like a hoot.

Pontoco is getting some publishing help from Cyan Ventures, the publishing arm of Myst studio Cyan Worlds, as well as additional support from Robot Teddy. The idea is ??to team up with yourself and gradually restore the clocktower, creating massive assemblies using magical gloves that can automate?? your motions. It seems cozy, chill, and puzzling.

Basically, it seems like something fresh and unique in the world of virtual reality, and that's worth keeping an eye on. Look out for The Last Clockwinder's arrival on the Meta Quest 2 and Steam VR sometime this coming summer.

And that creature is you

Devolver Digital and VR are a combination I'm curious to check out, and the publisher is stepping back into the Immersion Zone with a new game that puts you in control of a giant creature with big, meaty tentacles. But instead of rampaging, in Firepunchd Games' Tentacular, you're a gentle giant. I??t's a pleasant? game about a cozy island, in fact.

To anyone who has played indie classic Octodad before, the appeal is ?clear. Being a well-meaning but out-of-place weirdo is something video games can do really w?ell.

You'll see the world through the eyes of a towering creature, but what do you, like, actually do? There's "action" and "construction" gameplay, so it's a smidge sim-y, which isn't nec?essarily what I was expecting at first given the premise and presentation. But it works! As for the story, there's a reason the Great Tentacled One isn't out to get people.

As the developers explain on the Steam page for Tentacular:

"Raised among humans on the bustling and eccentric island of La Kalma, the time has finally come to unravel the secrets of your mysterious origin while working as the world’s strongest handyman. Help your human friends to research a strange and an incredibly powerful energy source through a colossal collecti?on of action-based activities and constructions puzzles, using your titanic tentacles to aid your quest for answers and unlock elements for your very own playground in the creative sandbox mode."

Good VR games don't bite off more than the??y can chew (but also aren't too "tech demo"-esque either). Framing the scope a bit, we can expect "50+ puzzle and ac?tion levels."

Tentacular is coming to Meta Quest and Steam VR (that's Valve Index, Vive, and Rift as well) in spring 2022. (I hope you read that subheading up top in the style of Hoobastank.)
