300 people will be really happy

Deep Silver have announced that Metro: Last Light will be included with the 300 Steam Machine prototypes that will be shipping to lucky people soon. Just the other day 4A Games released the game for Linux, and now it makes a lot of sense why they decided to randomly port the game. 4A will be working on tweaking the game for SteamOS and for the Steam Controller.

The fact that a game of this size will be on SteamO??S is a really good sign for Valve's plans to invade your living room. Hopefully we'll see even more games get ported over to Linux in the future. Maybe SteamOS will have a better launch library then we ?first thought.

Will support SteamOS and the Steam Controller

The Linux version of Metro: Last Light i??s now available and, if you own 4A Games' post-apo?calyptic shooter on Steam, it's all yours at no extra charge.

A welcome addition to the platform's library of Linux titles, particularly in light of the upcoming SteamOS. 4A Games has pledged support for the operating system, the goofy-looking Steam Controller, and said that Last Light will be included with Valve's prototype Steam Machines that are going out to beta testers l??ater this year.

Even if you aren't interested in Last Light per?sonally, it's good to see a substantial game like this supporting Linux. Now we just need other big-budget developers to follow suit.

Three new single-player missions from three perspectives

Faction Pack, the new story based add-on content for Metro: Last Light is now available. This pack features three new single-player missions, with each mission focusing on a different faction from the game. So you'll? be on the side of the Red Line, the Reich, and the Polis Rangers.

This is the first of?? four piece of add-on content. The next packs will give you a challenge based mode with online leaderboards. After that is the pack featuring a shooting gallery, AI arena, Metro Museum, and a new solo mission. The last DLC will feature original single-player missions that will have you exploring the side-stories of Pavel, Khan, and Anna.

The Faction Pack is going for $4.99 on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Grabbing the season pass will net you all this for $14.99, saving you $5 if the rest of the packs are priced the same as Faction.

There's more single-player content on the way

The first of four planned add-ons for Metro: Last Light drops on Tuesday, July 16 for Xbox Live, Steam, and PlayStation Network in North America. European PSN and everywhere else will get the Faction Pack ($4.99 / £3.99) a day later. This DLC is centered around three single-player missions, each of which puts you in the shoes of ??different character.

Should you want more out of Last Light, expect to play as a Redline sniper i?nfiltrating a Reich Outpost, a Reich "Heavy," and a Polis Ranger in training. The remaining three DLC packs have also been detailed by 4A Games and Deep Silver. Here are t?he official summaries:

  • The Tower Pack presents a unique experience for seasoned Metro gunslingers -- a challenge based game mode, with online Leaderboard support, as players fight their way up the combat simulator known as The Tower.
  • The Developer Pack boasts a fully stocked Shooting Gallery, the AI Arena and Metro Museum…  And a bonus solo mission -- The Spiders' Nest -- offers some new tools for dealing with an infestation of the skittering Spider mutants.
  • The Chronicles Pack will feature original single player missions that cast the player as three of the game's standout characters -- Pavel, Khan and Anna -- and explore their side-stories away from Artyom's adventure.

All together, these four pieces of content are $14.99 / £11.99 when acquired through the game's Season Pass. I like that it took this long for the post-release rollout to happen. We're actually ready and willing to play more Last Light, in most cases.

Deep Silver revealed that Metro: Last Light has been kicking some serious ass. In its first week alone, US retail sales eclipsed 2033's lifetime sales. Last Light sales on the PC tripled Metro 2033's worldwide, and across all formats worldwide Last Light has sold more units in its first week than Metro 2033 managed in three months.

“4A Games are honoured by the reception our latest project has received,” said Andrew Prokhorov, Creative Director at 4A Games. “We are a small ?but dedicated team who are lucky to have been given the creative freedom and support to make the kind of experience we dream, as gamers, of playing. Our work on Metro: Last Light continues with new single player DLC, and we look forward to revealing future projects from the team. We want to thank all the Metro fans for support we have received.”

This is great news, and bodes well for 4A Games and the future of the Metro franchise.

Details on the DLC rollout

Four downloadable content packs are in the works for Metro: Last Light, starting with the Faction Pack in June. It and the Chronicles Pack will introduce further story content, followed by "a unique solo challenge to Metro veterans" with the Tower Pack and the Developer Pack, which offers tools intend?ed for "creative players."

Deep Silver and 4A Games have a $14.99/£11.99 Season Pass that packages all four add-ons on sale now. Additionally, the ??pass includes a semi-automa??tic shotgun rifle called the Abzats. PlayStation Plus members can save 25 percent on the pass between May 21 and June 4 in the US, and May 22 and June 5 in Europe.

"Artyom's story may have been concluded in Metro: Last Light, but there are other characters with stories to tell, some familiar locations that fans of the Metro series wanted to revisit, and some new challenges that 4A wanted to explore," said 4A creative director Andrew Prokhorov. "Since completing?? the game we have been working on these new stories and hope to release them throughout the summer."

While I've only just scratched the surface of Last Light -- so far, so good -- this so?unds like a nice, varied content mix. I'm hopeful!

Better performance on AMD cards as well

The lack of a customizable field-of-view is understandably a sticking point for certain PC gamers. It was no surprise, then, to see a big release like Metro: Last Light take some heat for not having a FOV slider. Today, an update went out on Steam that allows for FOV customization -- adju??st the "r_base_fov" attribute in %LOCALAPPD?ATA%\4A Games\Metro LL\ -- and fixes issues with AMD hardware while also offering improved performance.

According to publisher Deep Silver, "The main reason for maintaining a fixed FOV is because we have 3D elements like the watch and weapon ammo that need to remain visible. Changing the FOV would break all the cut-scenes and animations -- you would be able?? to see inside Artyom's arms, or they would appear to float in? the air in front of you. Or worse."

With all that said, expect a little funkiness depending on how far you take your FOV??.

Tunnel vision

Metro 2033 is a game so good, Destructoid reviewed it a year and a half after its release, finally giving it a scored assessment after the original reviewer made it to chapter three and gave up. The claustrophobic Ukrainian shooter, fueled by an engrossing story and highly effective horror elements, was truly one of the great story-led shooters of?? its generation.

Despite its dedicated fans, 2033 was nonetheless subject to a number of recurring criticisms, and these criticisms are all addressed in Metro: Last Light. The ?sequel is a humble game in many ways, going out of its way to improve?? upon everything laid forth in the original.

The result is a rewarding and visually beautiful shooter, but one that goes so far in the refinement process that it risks missing the entire point of Metro 2033. Indeed, while Last Light is quality in many ways, it may disappoint those looking for more of what 4A Games of?fered last time.

Metro: Last Light (PC [reviewed], PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)
Developer: 4A Games
Publisher: Deep Silver
Released: May 14, 2013 (NA) / May 17, 2013 (EU)
MSRP: $59.99
Rig: Intel i7-3770K @3.50 GHz, with 8GB of RAM, GeForce Titan GPU

Metro: Last Light thrusts players once more into the boots of Artyom, one of?? humanity's last survivors in the underground Metro tunnels of Russia. The narrative sees our hero dealing with the consequences of wiping out the surface-dwelling sentient creatures known as Dark Ones with a missile strike, while also working to suss out a plot involving three of the Metro's major fa??ctions: Polis, The Reds, and The Reich.

Last Light goes deeper into the culture of the Metro than before, and indeed some of the game's best moments are those scenes of civilization between dangerous territories -- densely populated towns and settlements packed with completely ancillary surrounding characters with huge amounts of dialog that inattentive players could easily miss. The world feels more alive and considerably deeper than that of 2033. It's a world where there's just as much to be gained from simply wandering around or ?sitting?? down than rushing into the combat sequences.

Though much of the game is thematically similar to the last, changes have been made to balance, A.I., and difficulty to create a very different experience. Where before, enemies almost always had the advantage ove??r Artyom and stealth was a necessity, now there is plentiful ammunition and more powerful weaponry to the point where?? sneaking around is simply an option as opposed to a vital survival tactic.

With a lot more ammo, weaker enemies, and boosted damage resistan?ce on Artyom's side, combat can be a lot less frustrating, but also far less challenging. Weapon kickback has been reduced, while regular ammo is no longer weak enough to make spending "military grade" bullets tempting. Indeed, most sections can be comple??ted more quickly by simply running in with an assault rifle and slaughtering the opposition.

It's quicker to run and gun, but it's not necessarily more fun. Stealth might not be so crucial now, but it's still the most enjoyable way to play. Blowing out lamps and shooting lights to create a nocturnal killing field is as fun as ever, and slowly picking th?rough the darkness, flinging knives at opponents, or sneaking up behind them for a one-hit blow can be both empowering and tense. Darkness does a far better job of concealing Artyom, and those enemies with lamps or night vision goggles are clearly defined, allowing for a better command of the combat zone.

However, Last Light has again gone a little too far in its overhaul. Stealth, like combat, now gives Artyom a distinct advantage over his enemies. Throwing knives and silenced pistols are powerful to the point of being damn near game breakers, turning Artyom into something resembling a deadly CIA operative as opposed to a vulnerable and?? embattled survivalist. Enemies barely react when a light is shot out over their heads, and darkness renders you so invisible that you can sneak around practically under somebody's nose. These changes make for a game that is far more welcoming to newcomers but completely tosses all the survival horror ideas out the window.

For those wanting a more familiar Metro 2033 experience, there is Ranger Mode, which reduces available ammunition, takes away the HUD, and generally makes things far more oppressive. Unfortunately, despite being labeled by 4A as "the way Metro was meant to be played," Ranger Mode is only available as a pre-order bonu??s or a piece of extra paid-for content. As su??ch, it has not been reviewed here, as it is not part of the default experience. If you find yourself unwilling or unable to access Ranger Mode, your best bet is to up the difficulty level. It won't be the same, but it'll at least be a bit tougher.

Although Last Light is a wholly different type of game, it's not necessarily bad. Indeed, with a far more interesting story, a gorgeous atmosphere, and a few moments of genuine terror, Last Light has a lo?t to offer. By far, those chapters taking place on the post-nuclear surface world are not only highlights of this game, they also provide some of the best action-horror sequences seen in games for a long time.

The surface areas of Metro 2033 were interesting but often irritating sections, where the lack of ammo could be a truly damnable thing and enemies were more annoying than intimidating. Last Light's less claustrophobic environments are, by contrast, absolutely terrifying. Despite many of them taking place in daylight (or the grey misery that constitutes daylight in Metro's world) and ??featuring large, open arenas, surface sections are littered with debris, monsters lurking in grass?? or water, and haunting sounds. Several areas are also infused with ghosts of the past, inflicting flashbacks on Artyom that one could only describe as downright harrowing.

This is where Last Light truly shines -- not in the underground tunnels that made Metro 2033 what it was, but in the blasted wasteland populated by harsh acid rain, mutated ani?mals, and disturbing echoes of the past. Once again, some of the terror is undermined by the fact that filters for Artyom's gas mask are far more plentiful, but the intimidating atmosphere is such that it works wonders in demolishing any sense of safety or complacence. Here is where I got a lot of th?at old feeling back, that creeping sensation of vulnerability and fear.

Another early highlight is a chapter involving spider-like beasts that hate the light. Making their home in dark and abandoned sections of the Metro, t??hese creatures must be driven back with Artyom's flashl?ight and have a nasty habit of sneaking up from behind. Once again, these sections exploit the player's paranoia and feelings of exposure with a level of devilish expertise.

It should also be said that, while Metro 2033 fans might not have wanted it to be so useful, the combat is pretty damn good. Enemy movements are sensible this time, and while they're easier to take out, cutting down twisted Nazi and Communist descendants&??nbsp;rarely fails to satisfy. There's also a terrific sense of variety in a game that could so easily have just gone through the regular motions. Those moments of wonderful downtime, intense combat sequences, sections of travel by boat or rail car -- the?? game's structure and sense of pacing are worthy of praise.

Hammering home the game's crucially intense atmosphere is a commitment to gorgeous graphics. Running at high settings on my PC, this is a game so good-looking it easily gives Crytek's efforts a run for their money, with some utterly lovely lighting effects and bustling, densely populated areas full of motion and eye-catching scenery. The graphics would mean nothing without solid design backing it up, however, and this is where Last Light truly capitalizes on the technology powering it.

Few games can pull off grey and brown in a way that manages to feel unique, especially in a generation famously scorned for such color schemes, but this is one of those releases that make a harsh, bleak world look fresh and even stunning. Chapters taking place during heavy surface world ??rainstorms are particularly pulchritudinous, and simply take one's breath away, despite taking place in a world so depressing and blighted.

And of course, the soundtrack is a fitting accompaniment, a?s baleful as it is beauteous, while the voice talent, naturally running thick with Russian accents, is top-notch stuff. The sound design is married perfectly to the visuals, creating a rare example of total cohesion in aesthetic that you don't see done so well in many other games.

Despite looking and sounding beautiful, a few grievous bugs threaten to tarnish otherwise polished package. At various points, A?rtyom will be accompanied by an ally who is required to open certain doors and lead the way. At one point, I had to restart an entire chapter because a checkpoint saved after one of these allies decided to stop moving. He was needed to lead me to a door and trig?ger an event, but he wouldn't do so no matter how many times I reloaded the checkpoint. Fortunately, individual chapters aren't especially long, but it was still quite inconvenient.

My PC copy was also subject to a number of crashes, including one in the very final battle of the game. Overall, I crashed to the?? desktop three times during the course of the eight-hour adventure -- not an unplayable?? number of times, but enough to merit a stern mention.

Metro: Last Light is a disappointment in several respects. That simply has to be said. Its design painstakingly addresses criticisms of Metro 2033 to such an overzealous degree that it actually undoes many of the things 2033 was praised for. The fact you have to pr??e-order or pay ?to access a game closer to the original's heart is also damn near inexcusable, and again I emphasize that I will not review a mode that has been tacked on in such a fashion.

However -- and it's a big however -- Last Light is also a fine game on its own, and if we're to judge it without the shadow of 2033 looming overhead, we can say it's a game packed with structurally sound combat, a rewardingly fluid narrative, and an atmosphere that runs the gamut from i?ntriguing to chilling.

As a default experience, Metro: Last Light is a good game that forgets why Metro 2033 was a great one.

Minimum specs it is!

Metro 2033 looked impressive on PC years ago, and if you've been keeping up with its sequel, you'll know that it is similarly going to require a powerful system to achieve those coveted maxed-out settings at a decent resolution and frame rate. A blog post by NVIDIA gives it to us straight:

Minimum

  • Windows: XP (32-Bit), Vista, 7 or 8
  • CPU: 2.2 GHz Dual Core e.g. Intel Core 2 Duo
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Direct X: 9.0c
  • Graphics Card: DirectX 9, Shader Model 3 compliant, e.g. NVIDIA GTS 250 or higher

Recommended

  • Windows: Vista, 7 or 8
  • CPU: 2.6 GHz Quad Core, e.g. Intel Core i5
  • RAM: 4GB
  • Direct X: 11
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 580 / 660 Ti or higher

Optimum

  • Windows: Vista, 7 or 8
  • CPU: 3.4 GHz Multi-Core, e.g. Intel Core i7
  • RAM: 8GB
  • Direct X: 11
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA GTX 680 SLI / NVIDIA GTX 690 / NVIDIA Titan

For what it's worth, select GeForce GTX cards will include a complimentary copy of Last Light. Sounds like 4A Games' latest will put them to good use. Like the last game, I'll probably end up playing t??his long after launch once these requirements aren't quite so high-end.

We're just over a month away from Metro: Last Light releasing on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. As we get closer to release, the Metro YouTube channel will be releasi?ng a series of survival guides expl?aining what players can expect.

The first chapter here details how players will underground, and how to deal with the var??ious factions cont??rolling the different parts of the metro.

Trouble in the tunnels

Here's a new trailer for 4A Games' Metro: Last Light. It's called "Salvation" and it's all about the forces struggling for dominanc?e in Russia's post-nuke subterranean tunnels. Expect some plot hints and lots of images of men in masks shooting other men.

The game's out May 14, under its ??new publi??sher Deep Silver, and I'm quite looking forward to giving it a go.

Transition from THQ has been 'kind of quite banal'

When THQ's properties were auctioned off earlier this year, it was easy to become worried about some titles -- especially those that had been shown publicly before and weren't terribly far off from being completed -- despite many of the intellectual properties and studios finding good homes. I would put Metro: Last Light in that category of games it would've been painful to see suffer from the sale, but its new publisher, Deep Silver, reassures that it is on track after the delay.

"Obviously the release date has been pushed back a little bit as the studio re-engages with a new publisher and tries to figure out QA, submissions and all the stuff you have to do behind the scenes," Deep Silver global brand manager Huw Beynon told VG247.

"We've not lost too much time on the development of the game, and it's essentially going to be the same product we planned to release in March. We're just really excited that it's not been too traumatic for the studio -- the game is coming out -- I'm confident t?hat it's going to be great. And I'm just really glad that we can be showing it again."

Europe gets it May 17

Metro: Last Light is still in development despite the demise of THQ, and is now on track for a May 14 release date in? North America. ??Europe will be able to sink back into the post-nuke depths on May 17.

"The new release date is the ideal way to strike the balance between bringing the best out of Metro: Last Light and not keep the fans waiting longer than necessary," said Koch Media CEO Dr. Klemens Kundratitz in a press release. "We won’t leave that time unexploited and will work c?losely together with 4A Games to make the game even better. It will receive all the attention it deserves."

Deep Silver will now be publishing the game, a sequel to the rather great Metro 2033. It's been a long time coming, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it holds ??up. My fingers are crossed.

Includes hardcore "Ranger Mode" difficulty

Those who enjoyed the challenging "Ranger Mode" setting in Metro 2033 will have to get Metro: Last Light's Limited Edition -- announced today -- to get it in the sequel. The good news is that it's not one of those extravagant, hundred dollar boxed ed??itions -- it's all digital stuff, and has had no extra pricing announced.

As well as Ranger Mode, the Limited Edition includes a "Ranger load-out," complete with extra military-grade bullets to use as currency, and a powerful AKS-74U rifle.

For PS3 users, anybody who preorders the Limited Edition on the PlayStation Network from December 18 will also receive a free PSN theme and a digital copy of Homefront. So far there's no option to just take t?he theme ... which is really unfortunate.

More like Metro: No Available Light

I'm really looking forward to Metro: Last Light, and this lovely and somewhat haunting new "Genesis" trailer turns that up a??nother notch.

The trailer does a nice job of showing off the game's environ?ments and some beasties in the calmer first half, but then gets crazy in the second half with attacks in dark, confined spaces. Gotta love those! I predict that I'll be blindly wasting ammo by shooting in the dark most of the time.

I'm so ready for Metro: Last Light. What about you?

No Metro sequel on Nintendo's hardware anytime soon

Hoping to get Metro: Last Light on the Wii U? Keep dreaming, because according to 4A's chief technical officer, Nintendo's system is no good. Criticizing its slow CPU,&nbs?p;Oles Shishkovtsov said the Wii U could be a detriment to his ?game.

"Wii U has a horrible, slow CPU," he told Now Gamer.

"We had an early look at it, we thought we could probably do it, but in terms of the impact we would make on the overall quality of the game -- potentially to its detriment -- we just figured it wasn’t worth pursuing at this time," THQ's Huw Beynon added. "It’s something we might return to. I really couldn’t make any promises, though.

"We had an initia?l look at the Wii U, but given the size of the team and compared to where we were last time, just developing ??for the Playstation 3 is a significant addition."

Ouch. Compared to the early praises developers had for the system, things are looking a bit dire for third parties. So far, there are reports of ported games running slow and looking jaggy (which I'll agree with in an upcoming review of Warriors Orochi 3) and things like this won't help.

Reminds me of previews versus reviews in my lin?e of work -- how it's all compliments until the thing's actually out, then the criticisms arrive. I h??ope it's something developers can work with, in any case. I still have a lot of faith in the Wii U, and love using it. I want it to do alright.

Don't shoot the messenger

In reporting its second-quarter fiscal 2013 results, THQ announced the delay of South Park: The Stick of Truth. Originally scheduled for March 5, 2013, the Obsidian Entertainment-develop?ed role-playing game is now looking to rel??ease "early fiscal 2014" -- in other words, at the earliest, in April 2013.

Unfortunately, there's more where that came from. Company of Heroes 2 and Metro: Last Light are now expected to ship in March. "Our fourth quarter releases are the first titles that I have had the ability to materially impact," stated THQ pr?esident Jason Rubin, "and experience told me that the games needed additional development time to be market-ready."

Disapp??ointing news to come home to, no doubt about it. Hopefully that extra development time can be used effectively. Obviously we want every game to be good -- who wouldn't? -- but I do have high hopes for these three titles in particular.

Disposable mode is disposable

Metro: Last Light will be abandoning the multiplayer aspect of its game, taking out the frankly unnecessary mode to concentrate on a polished single-player campaign. 4A Games admitted on its blog that the announcement was probably a mistake.

"Right now we’re 100% focused on the single play?er campaign and not thinking beyond that," revealed the studio. "We don’t like throwing away work tho??ugh, it’s a project we could potentially return to after Metro: Last Light ships.

"We are gamers at the studio and really wanted to bring the world of Metro to life in a multiplayer enviro?nment. It was a decision made by us at 4A from the o?utset and THQ have since been supportive every step of the way, including our decision to put multiplayer on hold. In hindsight, it was probably a mistake to announce it when we did, but we’re an enthusiastic team and wanted to be open about what we were making!"

4A said it never dedicated too many resources to multiplayer, so the quality of the campaign shouldn't be negatively affected by the w??asted work. It believes the single-player will "benefit" as a result of th?is.

I shook my head at the announcement of multiplayer as soon as it happened. Like BioShock, Metro 2033 was a game that just didn't need it. The game's success hinged solely on a fantastic solo experience, and throwing in a multiplayer mode wo??ul?d add nothing -- except an inch or two on the end of a marketing manager's penis.

So yeah, I'm fine wi??th this. Never want?ed it, ain't gonna miss it.

Sad news for all you Wii U owners: Metro: Last Light may not be coming to Nintendo's co??nsole after all. What's that you say? You don’t own one ? yet? Ha, losers!

A Wii U release is not currently in develo??pment and, as you may expect, won't be shipped alongside the game's release on other consoles and PC next year, according to Mark Madsen, global brand manager at publisher THQ.

For those unfamiliar with developer 4A Games' rather divisive first-person shooter, Metro 2033, you may want to check out Hamza's preview for its sequel Last Light. In this sequel, the developer seems to be focusing more on intense Call of Duty-esque gunfights and over-the-top scenarios without doing away with the original's peculiar features, such as?? using a pump to power your flashlight and wearing highly durable gas masks that can crack.

Th??ough the Wii U's unique interface could open the door? to new possibilities for the game, Madsen implies that there are no set plans on how to go about this.

"??The verdict is out on what we can do to maximiz??e the code for the Wii U, and we'll see [what happens]," he said.

With no version currently in development, one can assume the game may never make it to Wii U. But, what about you lot who think traditional controllers and mouse/keyboard are booooring? Here are some ways to spruce up your Metro experience next year with some household items.

A Paper Bag

Whenever you exit the colonized cities of the game and enter Metro's desolate, poisonous outside world, wear a paper bag on your head and breathe really fast. This will help immerse you ?in game's ruthless world. Go ahead and fill your bag with some spray paint for more luxurious results. You deserve i??t!

Hand Grip

Some (boring) people claimed the need to pump your flashlight in the original Metro was tiresome, so why not make it even more tiring by doing the act with a hand grip in your other hand. Soo??n your hand will be strong and overwrought with manly calluses. Post them on your OKCupid profile and ??you'll never be lonely again!

Actual Bullets

The original Metro had an economy where your ammo doubled as your currency. Many players found this confusing, so 4A Games is revamping it in Last Light. But, we can make it much mo??re understandable right now by stocking up on bullets and spreading them out before us. Then, while we play, we can easily keep track of our virtual bullets by having our real bullets in front of us. Sure, our landlord may think we're crazy but we’ll show him how good we are at videogames!

Metro: Last Light has slipped to a 2013 release date, according to THQ's latest release schedule. The Metro 2033 sequel is slated for first quarter -- sometime between the begin??ning of January and the end of March.

With people expecting this generation to wrap up soon, every delay's starting to really cut it close. Still, there's nothing wrong with a developer getting extra time to polish a game, and hopefully this will make the already promising Last Light a far better experience.

No????w I shall wait impatiently for another chance to shoot bipedal rat mutants in their warty faces.
