It's paired with the direct sequel Metro Last Light Redux, which again remasters the base game while including 10 extra hours of gameplay via its DLC. Finally, we have Metro Exodus Gold Edition, upgrading the base game with ray tracing features and including the DLC episodes Sam's Story and The Two Colonels.?? For those wondering, the whole sh??ebang comes in at roughly 45 hours if you ignore the extra stuff. It's a lot of game for less than a tenner.

The sale may have flown under the radar for some folks, especially since there's another game set in a post-apocalyptic Eastern Europe that's coming in hot. STALKER 2 is just around the corner, launching on November 20. But if you're looking to explore some hellish badlands on the cheap, or if you're worried about your PC catching on fire, the Metro Saga Bundle is a good alternative. During today's PlayStation State of Play, developer Vertigo Games and publisher Deep Silver revealed the next entry in the post-apocalyptic Metro series is headed to VR. Metro Awakening serves as a prequel to the original Metro games that has been built from the groun??d up?? for VR as a story-driven first-person adventure.

"This origins story is so essential to me," said Dmitry Glukhovsky, who is also serving as a lore consultant for Metro Awakening. "It feels like returning to the foundations and roots of the series - now at the level that VR technology ca?n? bring."

Survivors of Nuclear Armageddon cling to life in buried subways of the Moscow Metro where ghosts and spirits haunt the living. Players will quite literally—via VR—step into the role of Serdar, a doctor and rationalist. Players have to brave the darkness, crippling radiation, and deadly threats of Metro in search of Serdar's wife and the medication she d??esperately needs?.

I'm still not 100% sold on VR but Metro is a pretty creepily immersive series, so I think this could turn out to be a good experience if done right. It's promising that rather than doing some sort of port, Vertigo Games is developing Metro Awakening with the features of the PlayStation 5 and PS VR2 in ??m??ind from the start.

Metro Awakening ?is set to release on PS VR2, Meta Quest 2 and 3, and PC VR in 2024.

A Moscow court has found Dmitry Glukhovsky, the author of the original Metro 2033 novel and its sequels, guilty of "deliberately spr?eading false information," leading to a hefty eight-year prison sentence. The charges state Glukhovsky posted texts and videos on his social channels claiming that Russian servicemen have been committing crimes in Ukraine.

As reported by the Associated Press, Glukhovskey was tried in absentia as he is not in Russia. A famed journalist and author, Glukhovsky was pronounced a "foreign agent" last year due to his critique of the Kremlin and Putin himself. This case falls under the law passed by Russian parliament shortly after the invasion o??f Ukraine, imposing jail terms of up to 15 years for spreading "fake" news about ??the military.

Dmitry Glukhovsky has been a vocal critic of the Russian regime for some time, and he hasn't been hiding it at all. The author has talked openly and critically on social channels about the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which started in February 2022.

Within games, Glukhovsky is well-known as the author behind the Metro series that spawned the video game adaptation. These dystopian novels follow survivors l?iving in the metro of Russia, as rival factions vie for power beneath a post-nuclear wasteland.

Even within the gaming world, Glukhovsky is hardly alone in his critique of Russia's behavior. Metro 2033 developer 4A Games called for support among many others, helping shine as bright of a limelight on the situation as possib??le for the indust??ry.

Some of the developers have, of course, had first-had experience with the war. Some of the devs have fought and even reportedly died on the frontline.

On the midnight train to Night City

Modders have been working hard on Cyberpunk 2077, doing everything from implementing helpful tools to new visual filters. And others like the Metro System mod add new ways of seeing Cyberpunk 2077. Like from the inside of the Night City Train.

This mod from 'keanuWheeze' adds a fully useable metro system to Cyberpunk 2077, with 19 stations and both first and third-person views while you ride. Just head off to one of the in-game stations, marked by the Metro sign signifier on the map. Wh?en you interact with the fast travel gates, you'll enter the station.

Then, text at the bottom of the screen informs you where the currently incoming train will be headed, with a map pin to help as well. Entering a train is as simple as walking up and hitting interact,?? and you can swap between seats and viewpoints during the trip. Heck, you can even turn on the radio.

Mods can be over the top, like inserting Thomas the Tank Engine or creating a complete, massive overhaul. But I really like the Metro System mod because it adds more of that city life feel I'm looking for in Cyberpunk 2077. Being ??able to just hop on the tr??ain and ride around, taking in the sights, sounds great. Or maybe simulate a little bit of what life is like, especially when you don't have future-bikes or luxury A.I. cabs to take you everywhere.

Cyberpunk 2077 itself, meanwhile, is still ramping back up from its launch. The next-gen versions of the futuristic RPG are still "on track" for 2022, as CD Projekt has reportedly entered settlement talk??s with investors who sued over Cyberpunk 2077's launch.

It seems like there's been an upwards trend of players going back to Cyberpunk 2077 and now, after many patches and updates, finding things to? enjoy. Ma?ybe it's time for another run? And now, one that can include a soothing, radio tunes-filled ride on the Night City metro.

Dead Island 2 remains lost at sea

Koch Media is ?already getting set for E3 2021, and will be taking a moment out of the jam-packed weekend in order to make some big announcements. These announcements, however, will not involve subsidiary Deep Silver, nor any of the latter publisher's upcoming releases.

As confirmed by the publisher on Twitter, titles such as the Saints Row sequel, the recently announced TimeSplitters entry, the next Metro, or even the long, long, loooong in development Dead Island 2 will not?? be putting in an appearance at any point during either E3 or the Summer Game Fest. It appears that Deep Silver's catalogue will be taking a b?ackseat during this summer's important media blitz. Deep Silver ends the tweet by telling fans that it will be sure to inform them when it has new news to share on the aforementioned releases.

Instead, Koch Media will be dedicating its airtime to revealing what it has been referring to on social media as "THE big announcement". Koch will play its hand on June 11, when it sits down with Summer Game Fest host Geoff Keighley for the mysterious revelation. As for Deep Silver, while it is a shame we won't be seeing any of the above titles, it is also a much different media world now, with new streams seemingly taking place every few weeks. While perhaps not at the forefront of the first-person adventure genre, Metro Exodus was, without a shadow of a doubt, one of the most atmospheric games I'd played in recent years. And real scary to boot. That bar is only set to rise, with the launch of Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition.

Now available on PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG.com, and the Microsoft Store, Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition takes 4A Games' 2019 post-apocalyptic adventure and gives it a fresh coat of paint for next-gen technology. The new edition includes additional ray-tracing and global illumination effects, improved load times for SSD drives, the implementation of 4K textures, and support for DLSS 2.0 on Nvidia video cards. Best of all, Enhanced Edition arrives as a free update to all Metro Exodus owners.

Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition is also in the works for console platforms, and will launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. A new physical release, Metro Exodus Complete Edition, will also include DLC expansions The Two Colonels and Sam's Story.

If you fancy a miserable jaunt through a Fallout-style universe, packed full of terrifying monsters, scummy humans, and an endless need to scavenge, then it might be more than worth your time to check out Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition on the platform of your choice.

Ray trace the Metro

Artyom's exodus from the Metro is getting a pretty big overhaul next week. 4A Games has confirmed that the PC Enhanced Edition of Metro Exodus will launch on May 6, 2021.

The upgrade is free for all owners of the original game, whether it's on Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, or the Microsoft Store. It also requires Windows, so Linux users and Google Stadia or Amazon Luna players won't be able to check this out just yet. (4A notes that Mac users can play the PC version via GeForce Now in its blog.)

The PC Enhanced Edition will also require Ray Tracing capable hardware, and you cannot run it without Ray Tracing on. It's estimated the install size,?? including the base game and its two DLC packages (The Two Colonels and Sam's Story) will come in around 80 GB. So what are you getting for all that heft and storage?

Well, according to Digital Foundry, who got an exc??lusive first look at the upgraded PC version, it's a "phenomenal improvement" over the 2019 game. And just watching the video, that's pretty easy to see.

The Metro series has been a visual powerhouse for a while; Last Light was one of the first games I played on my first gaming PC build, and it was a wonderful showcase for it. The Ray Tracing requirement might seem a bit over the top, but if you're looking for a way to show off how awesome your rig is—and play a good game—this might be your Crysis.

Celebrating a whole decade of Metro – oh my gosh, it's really been that long? – developer 4A Games has decided to give out free PC copies of Metro 2033 on Steam this week. It's free to keep for good.

All you need to do is claim the game by Monday, March 15 at 10:00 am Pacific.

In a fun twist, 4A Games is giving out the original version of Metro 2033 from 2010, not the Metro 2033 Redux release that showed up four years later – so if you ever wanted to go back, now's the time to act. Some fans prefer the d??istinct look and feel of the original over the glossed-up, optimized remaster.

Meanwhile, the rest of the series is on sale right now, including the most recent game, Metro Exodus. With the anniversary discounts, you can get the Redux titles for $3.99 each and Exodus for $13.59.

Ten years ago, I wouldn't have expected Metro to be where it's at. 4A Games has do??ne well for itself.

Going deeper underground

Publisher Deep Silver has announced that the PC edition of its Scary-As-All-Fuck first-person adventure Metro Exodus will receive a major upgrade this spring, with the launch of Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition - arriving as a standalo??ne release or as a free upgrade for those who already own the apocalyptic epic.

It sounds like you're really gonna need a hefty engine to get this train runnin', as the Enhanced Edition will require a ray tracing-capable graphics card even at its minimum specification - significantly boosting the game's visuals and special effects and making Metro Exodus' already smothering? atmosphere starker and more frightening than ever before.

"It is not a simple 'patch' to the base game," noted developer 4A Games in a blog post. "Instead it will be offered as an extra entitlement to all existing Metro Exodus PC p??layers. The PC Enhanced Edition will offer additional ray tracing features, including Advanced Ray Traced Reflections and support for DLSS 2.0 on NVIDIA hardware, which offers sharper image details and increased framerates and display?? resolutions."

In addition, work continues on a similar upgrade for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S editions of Metro Exodus, including new lighting effects, 4K textures, and support for hardware specific features such as spatial audio and Haptic Feedback. Crucially, the upgrade will severely reduce Metro Exodus' brutal load times, optimizing tra??nsfer tim?e for SSDs.

Metro Exodus is a dark but interesting dystopian adventure. And it sounds as if some of these new upgrades will definitely improve some of the issues that held the game back from achieving greatness on release. If you didn't give Metro Exodus time of day back in 2019, it might be worth checking out this Enhanced Edition - provided you have the juice necessary to get it up to steam, of course. The new Metro game is being built for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S with a 'complete overhaul of our engine and renderer'

4A Games is ushering in another decade of Metro with a new entry and a free next-gen upgrade for Exodus while also branching out with a "new AAA experience that can sit alongside the Metro series."

In a blog post, the studio announced its plans for the next Metro sequel �a PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S release with?? a "complete overhaul of our engin??e" and the potential for multiplayer.

Preemptively assuaging fears, 4A Games says it is exploring multiplayer with a "dedicated team" at Saber Interactive so that "it's not to the detriment of our single-player ambitions." That said, there's no guarantee the next Metro will even have the stor?y campaign and m??ultiplayer "in the same package."

"We are still figuring things out, but know that we are absolutely committed to more single-player, story-driven experiences in the Metro universe that our fans have come to know an?d lov?e."

As for the more immediate future, Metro Exodus is leveraging the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S for a "faster frame rate, increased resolution, reduced loading times, and stunning Ray Tracing features" �the works. Exodus will offer an upgrade from PS4 to PS5 and Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S in 2021. I'm not at all surprised this is happening, and I'm a?lso not surprised it's going to be free. Good on them.

These creators have a lot of ambition, and it's gratifying to see them inch closer to reachi?ng it.

You might've heard that Metro Redux – a two-game collection featuring Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light – is coming soon to Nintendo S??witch. It's true! And the particulars of the por?t are refreshing.

Deep Silver is releasing the Switch version of Metro Redux on February 28, 2020, for $49.99.

If you're going the digital route, you'll be able to download the two games individually from the Nintendo Switch eShop for $24.99 ea??ch. If you'd rather go with a physical copy, not only will that be an option, "both games and all DLC [are] on one cart with no additional download required."

We shouldn't have to commend a publisher for getting everything situated on a single Switch cart, but that's the world we live in. Deep Silver will also offer a Ranger Cache Pre-Order Pack at select retailers.

Beyond the trailer, we've also got some screenshots taken from both games running on Nintendo Switch. There's going to be an adjustment period if you're used to seeing Metro on even a modest gaming PC, but I'm gl??ad to see the series branch out wherever it?? can and reach new players.

The Pan European Game Information (PEGI) board has released a new listing for double-pack remaster Metro Redux on Switch, implying that the creepy shooters are headed to the Nintendo console in the n?ear-future.

Metro Redux, previously made available on PS4, PC and Xbox One, features remastered editions of 2010's Metro 2033 and its 2013 sequel Metro: Last Light. Redux features boosted visuals and tweaked gameplay for bot??h titles, along with? all previously-released DLC.

No details or secure release date is offered for Metro Redux for Switch, which bagged itself a PEGI "18" rating. Probably just because of the massive spiders, oodles and oodles of massive spiders. We will?? keep you updated if an official announcement is made by THQ or Koch Media.

This week's free Epic Games Store titles are an unlikely pair: David OReilly's Everything, a simulated adventure about playing as, well, (almost) everything, and Metro 2033 Redux, the start of 4A's atmospheric shooter series. If you're reading this a?rticle before Oc?tober 3, you're not too late!

Everything is a novel experience – one I think many of us can appreciate but plenty of people didn't necessarily want to pay full price for at launch. It's the type of attention-grabbing concept that will continue to find fans for years to come, thanks in part to de?als a??nd giveaways. Watch the trailer!

Metro 2033, on th??e other hand, can be brutal. I often feel like I need to be in the right headspace to get the most out of these games, for better or worse. You tend to get back what you put in.

I'm particularly excited about the next freebie, Minit, given that not nearly enough people played it. This charming, condensed take on Zelda-l?ike adventure??s will be free to claim starting Thursday, October 3.

Underground film

Gazprom Media are currently putting together pre-production plans for a movie based on Dmitry Glukhovsky's novel - and subsequent video game series - Metro 2033. As repo??rted by tinseltown mag Variety,? the film is expected to begin shooting next year for a 2022 release.

First published in 2002, Metro 2033 tells of the aftermath of a? apocalyptic nuclear war in Mother Russia, which forces the remaining civilians of Moscow undergr??ound, where they cobble together a civilisation within the subterranean transport system. The novel follows the story of Artyom, who is investigating the origins of a horde of mysterious creatures known as "The Dark Ones."

Glukhovsky noted that this isn't the first time he has been approached by production companies wishing to adapt his work, but this is the first time he has agreed to an offer. "In Russia, I didn’t see any producers who could make a good [adaptation of] this book," said the author. "It j??ust seemed impossible. But now I finally met a team that I can entrust Metro with. Our ambitions turned out to be similar: to create a world-class blockbuster and stun even those who have read the trilogy and know it by heart. So as not to disappoint them, I am ready to become a creative producer of the movie and help create it with both my advice and action."

Metro 2033 begins shooting?? in 2020 for a scheduled January 1, 2022 release ?date.

Tales of two survivors

Metro Exodus players will be stepping into some unfamiliar shoes in the game's two planned DLC chapters. Developer 4A has pulled back the curtain on the Metro Exodus&nbs?p;expansions, and they both feature a protagonist other th??an Artyom.

The first, coming this summer, is titled The Two Colonels. Here's 4A's description: "The Two Colonels, is [the story] of Colonel Khlebnikov, just below the surface, under the? dead city of Novosibirsk, as he makes his way home to his son, Kirill, for New Year's Eve. But all is not well with the people here: the slime is further consuming the tunnels, mutant attacks appear to be on the rise and the precious 'green stuff' that protects the people from radiation poisoning is runni?ng low. In order to secure the survival of the people, those in charge may need to take drastic measures. 

Following the journey and experiences of Khlebnikov during the last days of life in Novosibirsk, which Colonel Miller retraces a year later, players can expect the classic story-driven gameplay of the Metro series in this new linear chapter, ??complete with a brand new weapon, the deadly flame-thrower; claustrophobic environments; and the all-too-familiar hair-raising tension."

The second expansion takes a different approach. Sam's Story, which will launch early next year, is less linear and more sandbox survival. Here's that description: Sam's Story is the brand new sandbox survival level based on Vladivostok. Sam, a U.S. marine at the Moscow embassy before the bombs were dropped, has long dreamed of returning to his homeland, and maybe finding his family alive. The prospect seemed impossible in the darkened tunnels of the Metro, but when the Spartans discovered that Moscow was not the only city left?? alive a?fter the war, holding out hope didn't feel so foolish anymore.

Sam makes his way away from the Aurora in search of a way back to the U.S., arriving at the remains of Vladivostok's tsunami-ravaged harbors, ruined ??industrial buildings, ?and crumbling residential districts. To complete his journey, Sam will discover that he needs every tactic he has learned so far to survive, as his surroundings prove to be far trickier than expected. Players will forge Sam's path through the sandbox survival landscape of Vladivostok, as they take a brand new journey across the wasteland of post-apocalyptic Russia."

The two add-ons are bundled together as the Metro Exodus Expansion Pass, which is?? available to purchase now for $25 on the Epic ?Games Store, PS4, and Xbox One. Alternatively, each expansion can be bought separately, presumably at $15 a pop.

Going deeper underground

Currently, dystopian underground adventure Metro 2033 can be? grabbed on Steam for the grand total of no money. All you have to do is boot up Steam and register the game to your acc??ount, and then it's yours to keep.

Released back in 2010, the first-person title was based on the Russian novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky, and tells the tale of post-nuclear war Moscow, where what little humanity remains must live within the city's Metro lines, scavenging for supplies and avoiding hordes of dangerous m?utan??ts.
