I genuinely despise writing negative reviews. There are real ??human beings behind every project, and bad games are seldom the product of moral failings, but instead ar??e typically caused by an unfortunate convergence of factors both predictable and otherwise.

With that said, the gaming industry isn't a charity, and people deserve to know what they're potentially spending their hard-earned money on. Here's what you need to know: the problem with Flashback 2 isn't merely that it is buggy, sometimes to a hilarious degree. Instead, the main issue is that even if the bugs weren't present??, it still wouldn't be worth its current price tag.

The silver lining

Let's start with the positives. Flashback 2 is the follow-up to the cult classic 1992 game by Paul Cuisset. Flashback found popularity through its simple but effective level design, as well as its adventurous story. Despite its age, the art style can still be appreciated, and the wide range of movement??s available ensures you can engage with several aspects of the environment. It's a game I enjoy, which is why I was looking forward to this title.

Like its predecessor, Flashback 2 manages to capture that sense of adventure. It has varied environments that each present a unique aesthetic, with my favorite being the jungle which instantly reminds me of the 1992 game. The cities are cyberpunk communities with industr?ialist archi??tectural styles, and when racing between locations on a motorbike, you'll be treated to bright colorful lights and neon signs.

City in Flashback 2.
Screenshot by Destructoid.

It's also a game that looks good (sometimes). On PS5, the game runs at 60 FPS most of the time, though you can expect some pretty significant framerate dip??s, especially when new enemies are spawned. There aren't many graphics options on consoles (exactly zero to be precise), but that's not too much of a downside, as the game isn't graphically intense.

The cutscenes, which are ocassionally presented in comic book-style panels, are also aesthetically pleasing. It would have been nice to have more of them, as they help give you a better sense of the kind o?f world the developers were attempting to create. The soundtrack and ambiance complement the visuals nicely, and the voice acting is also satisfying.

Lastly, I like the mini-games that are present. To get through some doors, you'll have to engage in some hacking. This involves completing a mini-game that has you moving blocks around until the blocks with the same symbols collide with each other. These puzzles aren't particularly hard, but they are satisfying to solve. You'll also have?? a mecha battle to get through, ?which is short but kind of entertaining, at least compared to the rest of the game.

These are all the positive things that c?an be truthfully stated.

Artificial stupidity

For most of the game, you'l?l be exploring different environments and completing tasks on your quest to stop the shapeshifting Morphs that threaten humanity. Of course, you'll have a trusty weapon on hand called A.I.S.H.A. that also doubles as an AI companion.

I hated the shootouts. Every last one of them. Flashback 2 takes on a 2.5D style and then is brave enough to throw in some gunplay. It is painfully awkward to aim from this perspective, and oftentimes I found myself just rapidly tapping R2 and relying on the spray-and-pray method. As time progressed, I got a little more comfortable with aiming, but at no point?? did it ever feel li??ke I wasn't in a constant battle against the camera perspective.

The enemies don't make things any more enjoyable. They're stupid, uncoordinated, and sometimes just plain broken. Instead of having enemies that strategize against you, Flashback 2 instead attempts to inject some difficulty by flooding you with foes. The problem is that whether there are two aliens or twenty, the spray-and-pray method still applies. There is no strategizing when most of th??e gunfights take place in empty corridors - you just shoot and shoot until there are no m??ore baddies.

There is at least one saving grace when it comes to gunplay, and that's the fact that when you die, you're not forced to restart the encounter. You can pick up where you left off, with a full health bar this time. Normally, this would be a bad thing, as it would make the game too easy. However, in the case of Flashback 2, it helped sh??orten what was an agonizingly frustrating experience.

Things reach a peak in awfulness with the last battle where the game suddenly decides to entirely change the perspective into... I don't know what this would be called. It's kind of fully 3D, but way too confusing to call it that. Attempting ??to aim go?es from being hard to being wholly impossible. Trying to explain it won't do it justice. Just know it's painful to deal with.

Flashback 2 ugly perspective.
Screenshot by Destructoid.

It should be mentioned that stealth is technically an option, but practically it's not, and in the end, it's inconsequential because you'll be barraged with enemies at some point either way. You do?n't have to worry about ammo either so there's rarely a reason to not just blast your way through any problem.

The gameplay is belo?w average, but it would have been far?? more acceptable if it weren't for the bugs...

The bugs/h2>

The bugs... there's a lot of them. They're not just annoying, they're game-breaking. They will bring your progress to a screeching halt and sometimes even make you lose hours of progress. Trust me, I learned the hard way. Flashback 2 shouldn't be on sale in its current state.

Let's start with the subtle bugs first. Arrow buttons don't work on the main menu, forcing you to use analog sticks. Don't press any buttons while the game is loading. You could accidentally pause while on a loading screen. Why is this possible? On that note, be aware that you'll be running into far too many loading screens, and they last far too long. Why is this 2.5D title loading slower than Spider-Man 2?

For significant parts of the game, you'll have an NPC with you as you ge?t around. They're not quite escort missions, as your companion can't die, but they do come with most of the same problems. If you're getting anywhere, you'll have to wait for your cruelly slow companion to catch up with you. NPCs frequently get stuck, or sometimes just decide they're not following you anymore. Wit??h AI this rudimentary, this should never have been attempted.

Now onto the bigger bugs. More than once, I got stuck in a wall, forcing me to load up an old save, costing me hours of begrudgingly earned progress. You see, there are a limited number of save points, and they're spread out quite thinly. It is an archaic style of game design likely meant to hearken back to the 1992 classic, but it only?? succeeds in triggering frustration. Some things are better left in the past.

Flashback 2 glitch.
Screenshot by Destructoid.

I als??o just fell through the floor a few times, landing me in a black void. At some point, I hoped the game would just stay that way, and I'd have an excuse to not finish it. Unfortunately, reloadi??ng an old save fixed the problem.

Toward the later hours of Flashback 2, it felt like I was intentionally being punished. The frequency of bugs increased, and eventually, the game didn't bother even giving me my next mission objective. This forced me to search for a playthrough online so I could figure out what I needed to do next to finally end this ordeal. I’m so glad I had an obscure French YouTube channel to help me because the game sure wasn’t.

Flashback 2 presidents.
Screenshot by Destructoid.

That wasn't even the most ridiculous moment. The peak of my frustration hit when the game was actively giving me incorrect instructions. That image above is a spoiler but it doesn't matter at this point. What's important is that it's telli??ng me ??to press the Right button. That's false, I'm supposed to press the Down button. Eventually, it glitched so badly that the text in the message box stopped appearing at all.

On the French YouTube channel, you can watch a despe??rate soul struggle with this portion for over 15 minutes. They go to the controls menu to see if they missed anything, and they even reload a save file from far earlier multiple times before they realize just how badly they've been bamboozled.

Flashback 2 game over screen.
Screenshot by Destructoid.

Some of the glitches and errors just feel like a lack of quality assurance. The sequel ??blindly reuses game over messages, even when you've lost for reasons other than Conrad dying. The game is lying to you in the image above. Conrad didn't di?e. You can see him standing right there.

Flashback 2 security check
Screenshot by Destructoid.

Mission objectives annoyingly remain on the screen even when cutscenes play, but that's not the end of the long list of bugs. During battles, if you pick up an item containing text or get stuck in some dialog, Conrad will stay frozen until you've worked through all the text, leaving you vulnerable to enemy attacks and with no means to defend yourself. Also, remember that cool hacking mini-game I mentioned? Flashback 2 eventually manages to ruin that by overlapping images and turning the screen into a visual mess, as ?you can see above.

Conrad in Flashback.

Just play the first game

It's decades later, and Flashback hasn't magically become a bad game.? You can still pick it up o?n Steam for about $10, maybe less when it's on sale. I guarantee you'll have a better time with it than the sequel.

It took me 10 hours to get to the end of Flashback 2, but I suspect I could have cut that down to 5-6 hours if it wasn't for bugs frequently forcing me to lose progress. I didn't enjoy much of it, and?? I barely paid attention to the plot because it didn't matter. You c??an't focus on the plot when the game is so broken.

I cannot in good conscience rec??ommend this. Your time and money is better spent elsewhere.

Earlier this year we saw the first gameplay trailer for Flashback 2, and now our hero Conrad B. Hart is back for more. With Gamescom underway, a new trailer is here to show off more of the s?eque??l's action and intrigue.

Flashback 2 has original creator Paul Cuisset teaming up with developer Microids Studio Lyon to put players back in the role of the young GBI agent, and this new trailer shows more of how the new release differs from the 1992 original. Previously confined to methodical side-scrolling movement and quick and deadly gunplay, Conrad's freedom has expanded. You can see the 2.5D potion in motio?n as Conrad rolls, jumps, and shoots below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7ei5RIgyzI

Hangin' tough

Flashback 2 has other original team members on board in addition to Cuisset. This includes Thierry Perreau on game design and Amiga composer Raphael Gesqua.

While it looks like a faster-paced take on the classic, it's nice to see Flashback 2 clinging to cinematic adventure game animations. The way Conrad hangs from ledges an?d performs all-important combat rolls should look familiar enough to?? longtime fans. Sure, they may have misspelled "Washington" in one of the cinematics, but it looks like a lot of care was put into bringing the battle against the Morphs to 2023.

Flashback 2 spins its dystopian sci-fi yarn on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC on November 16. It's going physical and digital on consoles, too, and the Collector's Edition packs in some extras for those who want to shout their Flashback love from the heart of their shelves.

Stomp stomp stomp

Microids has announced that Enroad’s adaptation of the classic anime, UFO Robot Grendizer: The Feast of the Wolves, wil?l be released on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC on November 14. A Switch release will follow in 2024.

//youtu.be/7d241nAsP8I

What a weird trailer. To be honest, UFO Robot Grendizer is one of those classic animes I know of but don’t know anything about. The trailer doesn’t really answer any of?? those qu??estions. A mean-looking robot stomps around an idyllic countryside, then fights a bunch of robots. Tell me more, press release.

UFO Robot Grendizer: The Feast of the Wolves will follow the first narrative arc of the anime series. It will feature re-orchestrated music from the show “for an even more im??????????????????????????mersive experienc??e.Oh gosh, that’s all the press release says.

Shoot Them Up

Okay, the Steam page has more. You play as Umon Daisuke, who pilots the Grendizer, and the rest of this is sort of a word salad. I then did my due diligence and compared this information against the Wikipedia synopsis o??f the show, and the ??result is just bonkers. I mean, look at this:

“A new gaming experience is offered to you in multiple game phases: Action/Brawler, 3rd person Shooter, Shoot Them Up and Exploration./p>

Ignoring the egregious lack of an Oxford comma, I find the term “Shoot Them Upto be so quaint. I don’t particularly like the “shoot-em-upn?omenclature (and you’ll never hear me saying “shmup, but “Shoot Them Upsounds like something an out-of-touch mother might say to sound cool.

All right, well, what we can glean from this is that UFO Robot Grendizer: The Feast of the Wolves is tryi??ng to be true to the show/manga. It looks like it mainly involves exploration and brawling, with Shoot Them Up sections where you pilot the Spazer. Most importantly, however, you get to stomp your big metal boots around an idyllic countryside, and that’s pretty cool.

UFO Robot Grendizer: The Feast of the Wolves will la??un?ch on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, PS5, and PC on November 14, 2023. The Switch release will come after in 2024.

From Game, to Page, to Screen

Cult adventure story Syberia is being adapted into a new animated series The announcement was made by game publisher Microids and production company WHAT THE PROD, who will work together to see Benoit Sokal’s tales of exploration and myste?ry brought to life in a whole ??new medium.

While details are slim at this time, the animated series is expected to be a direct adaptation of the long-running adventure series, that began in 1999 with the release of PC adventure Amerzone, itself an adaptation of Sokal's 1986 comic-book series of the same name. In 2002, the first Syberia game was ?released for PC, PS2, and Xbox, following the escapades of explorer Kate ?Walker, as she journeys across Europe and into Russia in a tale of mystery and self-realization.

These releases were then followed by three sequels, which further depict Walker's odyssey ??as she delves into unexplored terrain and forgotten civilizations. Sadly, Sokal would pass in 2021, during the development of the most recent entry Syberia: The World Before, but this animated series is hopeful of introducing a whole new generation of fans to their world and characters.

"My husband would have been honored to witness his work being developed as an animated series," said Martine Sokal of the new project. "With Syberia, he created ?a magical and out-of-time world and I am glad it will reach a ?new audience with this new adaptation."

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4CIrBygieg

The new series producers spoke of their drive to deliver a high-quality, authentic series that will please fans and newcomers, citing the critically acclaimed adaptation Arcane: A League of Legends Story as the standard that they are looking to a??chieve.

"20 years after the release of the first episode of Syberia, our ambition is to craft an animated series inspired by the game’s incredible universe, speaking to the fans as well as newcomers thanks to ?a modern writing style paying tribute to these very best dystopian and uchronic masterpieces," said WHAT THE PROD President Ashargin Poire. "The art direction, the type and quality of animation will guarantee a mind-blowing experience halfway between reality and fantasy."

The Syberia ani??mated series is in pre-production. A release window was not announced.

Totally Spies! which originally screened in the very early '00s, sees World Organization of Human Protection (WOOHP) agents Sam, Clover, and Alex embark on a series of deadly (read: silly) missions in order to protect the free world from a rogues' gallery of terrorists and villains, while also attemp??ting to balance their death-defying deeds with the upscale Beverly Hills lifestyles. While Totally Spies! has been off the air since 2015, with the end?ing of its sixth season, it was revealed just last week that a seventh season is now in production at Cartoon Network, and is scheduled to premiere in 2024. While no details are currently available on Microids' tie-in video game title, the game has been licensed and commissioned specifically in line with the TV show's return.

"Microids is committed to faithfully and innovatively adapting well-known IP and it is a real honor for us to work on the Totally Spies! license," said Microids CEO S?tephane Longeard in a press release. "Thanks to the skills of our studios and in-house teams, we will do everything we can to offer the community a game that meets its expectations."

Budup bep... Beddabedda Budup bep...

Publisher Microids has released the first gameplay trailer for Flashback 2, the run 'n' gun sequel to the iconic 1992 Delphine adventu?re In addition, the publisher announced a release window of November 2023, which will see the sequel launch on PC and console platforms.

Initially announced back in the spring of 2021, Flashback 2 will see returning federal agent Conrad Hart once again take up arms against a shapeshifting alien race, The Morphs, in a sci-fi noir adventure set against the backdrop of the 22nd Century. The sequel will feature characte??rs, mechanics, and locales familiar to fans of the groundbreaking original, while introducing all new elements such as Conrad's powerful new A.I. firearm, A.I.S.H.A.

//www.youtube??.com/watch?v=B-arkUwWxs8&ab_channel=Microids

As you can see from the gameplay trailer, Flashback 2 is taking something of a 2.5D approach to its platform-based, run 'n' gun action, featuring all the of ledge scaling, dodge-rolling, abyss-leaping excitement of the original, while affording combat new depth through the use of cover systems and the ability to move and shoot both into and out of the geometric plane. Interestingly, the game this footage reminds me of the most is Epic's great 2009 release Shadow Complex, and while Flashback 2 is most certain??ly set to be something of a modest productio??n and release, this early trailer has promise.

Microids also revealed that it will be releasing a physical edition of the new sequel, which will include a physical copy of Flashback 2 on PlayStation or Nintendo?? The original Space Cowboy

Microids, a publisher with more than a slight obsession with old-school licenses, has announced that it has signed a deal with legendary anime studio TMS Entertainment to produce a video game based upon the classic manga and anime franchise Space Adventure Cobra.

Drawn and penned by Buichi Terasawa and released in 1978, Cobra detailed the dangerous, action-packed adventures of a rogueish, interstellar badass, who has made so many enemies over the years that he alters his appearance and wipes his memory in order to start a new life. However, those old familiar feelings come creeping back, Total Recall-style, and soon Cobra is back in ?the stars, battling badguys and wooing women, accompanied by his sexy android companion, Lady Armadroid.

//www.youtube.com/watch??v=nMPp2NPSntQ&ab_channel=??Sentai

Influenced by westerns, samurai films, and the James Bond franchise, Cobra would receive a television anime adaptation in 1982, as well as a theatrical film the same year, both titled Space Adventure Cobra. The franchise would be revisited in 2006 with a short, six-episode OVA. There were also several video games, produced for the Japanese market, on PC Engine and Sega CD. The latter was released in the west under the hilariously bland title of The Space Adventure.

"We are extremely excited to work on this adaptation of Space Adventure Cobra, a legendary anime which has inspired a whole generation of fans," said Microids CEO Stephane Longeard of the deal. "We are committed to respecting the universe and characters created by Buichi Terasawa, while providing an immersive gameplay experience, faithful to the spirit of the anime series. The Cobra game promises to be a great adventure for fans and gamers looking for a rich?? and compelling uni??verse."

It's a small world after all...

Publisher Microids, in association with Rochelais indie studio Tower Five, has released the first scre??enshots for the intriguing-looking insect adventure Empire of the Ants, which is currently in development for PC and console platforms, with a tentative 202??4 release window.

Based on Bernard Werber's 1991 sci-fi novel Les Fourmis, ("The Ants"), Empire of the Ants will see layers don the form of a soldier ant, charged with leading its lost colony to safer, finer pastures. Utilizing the p??ower of Unreal 5, Tower F?ive is attempting to construct a photo-realistic macro world one that will hopefully encompass the dangers and struggles that face our hard-working friends on a day-to-day basis.

As the self-appointed colony head, the player must guide the ants over and acros??s a variety of different environments, battling various predators and threats, as well as surviving the powerful?, all-consuming seasons. Keep your "people" alive, fend off aggressors, and find a new home in which to thrive.

These first screenshots depict the protagonist as they confront ladybirds, scour for sustenance, and face down rival colonies. Even at this early stage, it looks pretty fascinating, and brings to mind the unique, small-world joys of 2009 Wii release Deadly Creatures.

And even without a windswept Joan Collins screaming and swinging around a boat oar, or a small, midwes?tern town populated by pheromone-controlled rednecks on patrol, Tower Five's creepy-craw??ly title has definitely made its way onto my radar.

Empire of the Ants is currently in development for PC and consoles. It is scheduled to launch in 2024?.

Headed to Nintendo Switch on November 15, Smurfs Kart will see the garden-dwelling dopes take to the racetrack in a variety of ramshackle vehicles, all seemingly made from the shit they just had lying around, (although Smurfette seems to have built herself a pretty snazzy roadster, ??at least when compared to most of the abominations on display).

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljKTN1NuRyw&t

In regards to gameplay, you know how it works. Hit the turbo start, drift corners, find shortcuts, and take out your opponents with a variety of special weapons, including shells (Conker, not Koopa). Smurfs Kart features 12 tracks from the Smurfs universe, including Smurf Village, ??Smurf Forest, and Smurf ??Dam. Smurf.

Gargamel's house is also in the mix, so you can irritate his ass too. Seriously, just leave hi??m alone. 12 selectable characters include Papa Smurf, Smurfette, and the ones nobody k??????????????????????????nows the names of. You can't be the French Goth one that I absolutely don't fancy no matter what you've heard.

Look, I'm being flippant, (with good cause, because it's 2022 and fucking Smurfs Kart exists) but, honestly, it looks perfectly... serviceable as a kart racer. Smurfs Kart looks to "tick all of the boxes", so to speak. It supports up to four players. It has a variety of challenges and alternate modes to enjoy. It's fine.

I just can't help but think why anybody kids, or families, or racing game fans would choose to pick this up over, say, Crash Team Racing, or Mario Kart Deluxe, or Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing,?? or any number of more prestigious, polished examples.

Roll on TinTin.

You have sustained a lethal injury...

The best thing about publisher Microids is its utter devotion to dice-rollin' retro reveals One minute it's Tuesday, and then, BAM!, Denver the Last Dinosaur battle royale. Today's bizarre surprise comes in the form of a VR remake of Taito classic Operation: WOLF, coming to PC and consoles in 2022.

operation wolf returns

Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission is a reimagini?ng of the legendary 1987 rail shooter, which sees hardy Green Beret Roy Adams embark on a do-or-die mission behind enemy lines to rescue a group of hapless hostages, held captive by some evil force that isn't America. The remake will tweak the characters, locations, and objectives of the coin-op classic, but promises to retain the trigger-pumping, quarter-guzzling action that made the original such a smash over three decades ago.

First Mission will feature a one-or-two-player story campaign,?? a wide arsenal of?? explosive weaponry, and a frenzied survival mode, alongside new enemies, stages, and cutscenes. No trailer was released for the title but screenshots have been made available for player perusal. I see the soldiers and the helicopters, but as of yet no hapless nurses, cats, or blatant Schwarzenegger rip-offs. We'll get there.

Operation Wolf Returns: First Mission lau??nches on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Nintendo Switch in 2022. A Meta edition is planned ?for 2023.

Ahead of the November 2022 launch, here's a bit of gameplay from the remake

Certain video game sound effects never quite leave us, and I can safely say that the "smacking a caveman" noise from Joe & Mac 2: Lost in the Tropics is still living in my head rent-free all these years later. It may not be my favorite arcade-ish action-platf??ormer series, but I've got a soft spot fo??r it in a surprisingly deep sea of retro caveman games.

As previously announced, Joe & Mac is coming back this year with a remake called New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja and here's a (ridiculously) quick l?ook at it in action.

//youtu.be/VEtrfSIQCPQ

This Data East revival is being developed by Mr. Nutz Studio and Microids, who also handled the Toki remake, and ??while the spruced-up new art will be a hard sell for some, I'm happy to see this dinosaur-whacking duo back in action; I'??ll take what I can get!

After seeing this footage, I'm not any more or less "sold" on the remake's clean new art than before. It's something I'll ?likely get used to over time. It is an adjustment.

Along with the original arcade experience, New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja will have a "longer version of the story mode" under an Extended banner. The remake is also bringing back two-player co-op and including?? a speedrun mode, training, and even a boss rus??h.

Microids showed off the physical T-Rex Edition

The PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch physical copies of New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja come with two sticker sheets, a retro tr??ading card, and a?? tyrannosaurus keychain.

[caption id="attachment_342249" align="alignnone" width="1128"]New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja physical edition What's included in the T-Rex Edition for PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.[/caption]

The game is also launching on Xbox Series X/S and PC, albeit only as a digital releas??e.

In all cases, New Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja will release in November 2022.

If you're feeling nostalgic and you've got a (basic) Nintendo Switch Online subscription, you can revisit Joe & Mac and Joe & Mac 2 in the SNES library. I vastly prefer the sequel, especially after c??omparing notes with Chris Moyse, but? you do you.

Spinnin' them Smurfs bangers

Publisher Microids, perhaps best known for its love of classic gaming franchises and media IPs, h?as announced that it is launching its own music label, Microids Rec??ords. The new in-house venture will focus on releasing soundtracks from the French publisher's litany of PC and console games.

"Microids Records and the new Entertainment Division are testaments of Microidswillingness to develop the company’s brands and contents wider than the video game medium," said Microids' VP of entertainmen??t, Fré?déric Claquin. "Being able to launch this label with two original scores signed by Inon Zur is a blessing and a true honour, especially as we celebrate the Syberia series' 20th anniversary."

As noted in the above statement, the first two releases from the la??bel will be Inon Zur's dramatic scores to adventure titles Syberia 2 (2004) and Syberia 3 (2017). Going forward, fans can expect further releases from the new label, which has been formed as part of Microids' ongoing desire to increase its merchandising output beyond the realm of the physical video games themselves.

"This music label launch is a major milestone for Microidsadds company CEO Stéphane Longeard. "We have always had at heart to offer music scores enhancing the games we are creating and paying tribute t??o our great I?PS, collaborating with renown artists like Inon Zur for instance. We are fully aware about the importance of a great musical atmosphere for players, and we cannot wait to share what will be released next under the Microids Records label!"

Microids' next release, Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram From Hibernia, will launch on October 13.

Physical 'odditions' are also on the way

Publisher Microids and developer Oddworld Inhabitants have announced that 2021 sequel Oddworld: Soulstorm is preparing to bring its quirky adventure and grim fantasy world to the Nintendo Switch platform in the form of Oddworld: Soulstorm Odditimized Edition.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yvwwcwFe74

Already available on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox platforms, Oddworld: Soulstorm is the sequel to 2014's Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty and is itself a "reimagining" of the 1998 release Oddworld: Abe's Exoddus. The side-scrollin??g stealth adventure tells the story of Mudokan Abe as he once again risks life and limb to protect the sanctity of his people from armies of greedy, capitalist overlords. Outnumbered and outgunned, Abe must use cunning, guile, scavenged goods, and his fellow escapees in order to turn fortune i??n his favor, lest his race is wiped out by the miserable Glukkons.

oddworld: soulstorm switch collector's edition

In addition to the Nintendo Switch port news, Microids also revealed two physical "odditions" that are also in production. A standard Limited Oddition includes a physical boxed copy of Oddworld: Soulstorm, three art prints, and a metal carry case that holds up to 24 Switch cartridges. For die-hard fans, the Collector's Odd?ition includes the aforementioned items, b??ut also adds a hardcover art book, a keychain, sticker sheet, and a figurine of our hero in full-on tiptoe mode.

Pre-order customers will also receive a digital soundtrack as well as a digital version of the art book. While pre-orders for the physical odditions are live, Microids seem a little closed on where exactly the physical version can be pre-ordered with different territories carrying different participating retailers. In addition, neither a price nor a release date for the Switch edition of Oddworld: Soulstorm is available.

PAFF!!

Microids and its strange love affair with niche, old-school licenses continues with the news that the publisher has yet another Asterix the Gaul video game in the works Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram from Hibernia is currently in production at Osome Studios, with a PC and console release sche???duled for the fall.

Following on from 2021 side-scrolling brawler Asterix and Obelix: Slap Them All, the new title The Ram from Hibernia is a top-down action-adventure, and sees the two rebellious friends on a mission to recover a sacred golden ram,? stolen by the nefarious Roman Empire. Explore the land of Hibernia, (which we know as Irelan??d today), lay waste to armies of Roman soldiers, and save the day for the land's oppressed people.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvLYsEpw_PQ

As you can see from the trailer above, The Ram of Hibernia is packed out with the fr??anchise's trademark, fist-flying chaos. Studio Osome also promises to mix some exploration and puzzle-solving elements into the adventure, along with some magic and alchemy from Asterix & Obelix's druid pal, Getafix. The adventure will also support four-player co-op action, though this trailer only features two selectable charac?ters, which seems a bit of a missed opportunity.

It has to be said that Asterix the Gaul is something of a specific franchise for a specific audience ala Microids' other current point of interest, The Smurfs. Still, at least those faithful Asterix fans are eating well for the time being. Asterix & Obelix XXXL: The Ram from Hibernia launches this fall on PlayS??tation, PC, and Xbox platforms.

It doesn't even have the French Goth one

When esoteric publisher Microids announced that we were getting five Smurfs games in as many years, we all laughed, then we cried a little, then laughed more to alleviate the pain. But it seems that we all had a lot of growing up to do, as Microids has channeled that bemusement into sadistic determinati?on.

Following up the fall 2021 release of platform adventure The Smurfs: Mission Vileaf, the French publisher has now moved on to that second video game genre detailed in the Big Book of IP Licensing: Kart Racing. Smurfs Kart will?? see the little blue buggers taking to the rural raceway in a selection of ricket?y-looking wooden karts, loaded for bear with special items and unique abilities.

Players can choose from The Main One, The One With The Chef's Hat, The Old One, Smurfette, or The Others. (Kinda 'sus that I only know Smurfette by name, frankly), before hitting a series of woodland tracks in what is sure to be the bog-standard Mario Kart template that has been previously adopted by The Simpsons, Wacky Races, Garfield, Family Guy, Shrek, Angry Birds, LEGO, Nicktoons, Hello Kitty, Woody Woodpecker, Danger Mouse, and fucking M&Ms.

Honestly, once Sonic and Sega All-Star Racing Transformed was released, we already had a grandstand champion. Still, now we've done platformer and kart racing, we have no choice but to go to the obligatory next stage: Smurfs Wrestling.

Smurfs Kart is currently in development for Nintendo Switch. It is expected to launch th??is winter.

Wascally Weaponized Wabbit Weturns

[Update: According to Game Source Entertainment, (via Gematsu), the Nintendo Switch edition of F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch will launch in Japan July 14, sug?gesting that a western release will not be far behind.]

Publisher Microids has announced that it has signed a deal with bilibili to produce a physical edition of 2021's excellent but under-the-radar release F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch. In addition, it was announced that a Nintendo Switch port of F.I.S.T. i??s in the works, w??ith a scheduled late-2022 release window.

Any Destructoid regular will know that yer boy Moyse is very much a proponent of F.I.S.T., which was one of, if not my actual favourite release in 2021. Set in a dystopian, steampunk, anthropomorphic world, F.I.S.T. sees an old war veteran don what remains of his well-worn battle armor?? to take the fight to the oppressors of Torch City’s slum-dwellers. What follows is a stellar metroidvania sporting impressive visuals, dee?p and satisfying combat, and an air-punching tale of anarchy and redemption.

//youtu.be/ngNZBo8rpw8

"After the launch of F.I.S.T. Forged In Shadow Torch we’ve received many good reviews from players world??wide,? and one of the frequently asked questions was about its physical release in Europe and America,said TiGames CEO Zhang Tao. "Thankfully, with the help of bilibili and Microids, the question can finally be answered. We hope the physical versions will provide challenge-hungry players with an enjoyable adventure in Torch City. Thank you as always for the warm support!"

While F.I.S.T. has previously received a physical release in Asia, the title has only been available in the west in digital form. Microids hopes to publish a localized physical edition on both PlayStation and Switch platforms in alignment with the release of the new Switch port. I have to admit that, despite how it might look in screenshots/trailers, F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch is a deceptively hefty release from a tech standpoint, so it will be interesting to see how the epic adventure is scaled down for Nintend??o's hybrid p?latform.

F.I.S.T. Forged in Shadow Torch is available now on PlayStation and PC. Check out our review right here.

Big Fat Hairy Deal II?

Microids, curiously driven by a passion for old school licenses, has announced that it has signed a deal to produce three three new video games based on Jim Davis' comic book creation, Garfield. The superstar moggy joins Microids' portfolio of retro IPs that already promised new games based on Asterix, Tintin, and The Smurfs.

"We are thrilled by this new agreement with ViacomCBS Consumer Products!" writes Microids editorial director Alain Milly in a press statement. "Garfield is a well-known and family-friendly intellectual property fitting perfectly our portfolio made of popular franchises for all ages. Following successful collaborations on Garfield: Wild Ride and Garfield Kart Furious Racing, we are incredibly honored to work with ViacomCBS Consumer Products on three new games.?"

//twitter.com/Microids_o??ff/stat??us/1484186503970385922?s=20

The new releases will not be the sardonic feline's first foray into the realm of video games. Even as far back as the 1980s, Garfield was rocking home computers with titles such as Big Fat Hairy Deal and Winter's Tale. More recently, Garfield was added to Smash-like fighter Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl as the title's first DLC character. Garfield's gaming ca??reer hasn't exactly been five-star, but what do you what? He's a lazy cat living a perpetual existential crisis.

There are no details at all pertaining to Microids' new Garfield games. Not release windows, platforms, or genre. So maybe we'll get some mobile games, maybe a lasagna baking sim... it probably won't be a pachinko machine, we can at least be grateful for that. Whatever the spoils of this new deal, the new games better not drop on a Monday. He hates those, y'see? Even though he doesn't actually have a job.

Take it to the streets

Publisher Microids has announced that it has signed to distribute a physical release of Sloclap's incoming brawler Sifu. The martial arts adventure will get a hard copy on PlayStation platforms in spring 2022, following Sifu's digital release in February.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0quUPdpYb7U

Sifu tells the well-worn tale of a young martial artist on a violent trail of revenge. Following on from the ruthless killing of their family, our hero lays waste to battalions of thugs, gangsters, and other dangerous folks who all have a speed date with the protagonist's fists and feet. While the tale is typical, Sifu brings a fascinating time-based gimmick to the party, as the hero ages with each and ev??ery defeat. As we all know, however, with age comes ?knowledge; with knowledge, wisdom; and with wisdom, all new ways to wreck some heads. Can you deliver your vengeance before your time runs out?

Sifu looks pretty wild, and I'm really looking forward to checking it out. We had a preview, but I didn't get the memo. Still salty. But it's all good I'm just waiting for the PC release so we can have homebrew folk insert Etsuko Shihomi from Sister Street Fighter, Angela Mao from Lady Whirlwind, or hell, even Franco Nero from Enter the Ninja. With its blend of environmental carnage, confined spaces, and bone-breaking martial arts action. Sifu is looking to be an exciting and cathartic action-adventure, and hope??fully, a highlight of February's packed release schedule.

Sifu launches digitally February 8, 2022 on PlayStation and PC via Epic Games Store. The Sifu physical release will follow on PlayStation in spring 2022. You can check out our own Eric van Allen's thoughts in his preview report right here.

Another Brick in the Wall

Microids, who will not stop until every single classic franchise has made a comeback, has announced that Taito's famous bat-and-ball classic Arkanoid is getting set for a comeback in 2022, with the arrival of the all-new Arkanoid: Eternal Battle. The announcement was accompanied by a slick, electric teaser trailer, which you can check out below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-xxHOiZkbc

"We are very pleased that Microids, a company we trust, will be releasing a modern version of a popular title that Taito released 35 years ago," said Taito director Masakazu Suzuki of the project. "We’re confident that both old fans and new players will be very satisfied with the game." The project is very likely one of two new Taito comebacks Microids is preparing for 2022.

While there isn't a whole lot to see right now, (well, nothing, actually), Arkanoid: Eternal Battle promises to mix the classic block-busting gameplay of Taito's 1986 original with a flashy modern aesthetic and a host of ?new mechanics. Once again, the vessel VAUS will be forced to defend its mothership the titular "Arkanoid" from attack by the nefarious being DOH. This "fully modernized" take on the franchise is to be developed by French studio Pastagames, and is expected to feature a variety of solo and multiplayer modes and instantly recognizable old-school action.

Arkanoid: Eternal Battle is currently in development for unspecified platforms with a 2??022 release date.

Originally released to arcades in 1991, before later being ported to a variety of home platforms, Data East's Joe & Mac sees two totally radical and tubular cavemen embark on a quest to save their gal pals, kidnapped by a rival cave tribe. One or two players control the duo as they traverse a series of hazardous stages, battling?? cavemen and dinosaurs while utilizing a variety of rudimentary power-ups such as firebrands and stone wheels. The end of each stage sees our heroes come up against a mighty boss character, before saving one of the cave babes and moving on to the next level.

The new title is a pseudo-remake of sorts, and will be developed by Microids veterans Mr. Nutz Studio, also responsible for the remake of Toki and the upcoming brawler Asterix & Obelix: Slap Them All! Described as "more than a remake," Joe & Mac: Caveman Ninja will retain the narrative and gameplay of the original release, brought screaming from prehistory with fresh new visuals, new mechanics, and ??an all-new adventure mode, complete with new stages. This is all fantastic news, as the original game was cumbersome and dry. No, don't at me. Go back and play it.

A selection of early screens looks very promising, sporting the cartoon style that is fast becoming Mr.?? Nutz Studio's trademark. Damn, there's that bas?tard plant boss. Hopefully, we'll see a video of the boys in action very soon.

Let's Go, Mr. Driver?

Busy times for retro-loving outfit Microids, fresh off of a selection of old-school announcements including a Flashback sequel, a TinTin video game, an Asterix brawler, and no less than five Smurfs titles, the French pu??blisher has now revealed it is partnering with arcade legends Taito to produce two new games based on the latter's huge ?catalog of famous franchises.

"Microids international development strategy is going strong and we are proud to collaborate with Taito," said Micro??ids CEO Stephane Longeard in a press statement. "We are delighted the Jap?anese giant fully entrusted us with the development of these titles. We cannot wait to unveil the two projects we’re working on and we strongly believe they will surprise a lot of people!?"

Taito president Katsuhiko I?waki also spoke of the??ir pleasure with the collaboration.

"We have full confidence in Microids capability to revive two of our licenses through the titles they will offer in the coming months," said Iwaki in a ??brief statement. "Gamers will be amazed to experience these games come back on today’s consoles."

According to Microids, the two new games are already in development at "experienced studios", with an eye to launch in 2022. Taito has a slew of fantastic old-school licenses tucked away in its nostalgic portfolio, including Bubble Bobble, Operation W.O.L.F. New Zealand Story, Elevator Action, Darius, Arkanoid, and my personal favorite Chase H.Q. The two new games could be sequels/remakes of any of the above classics, or something else entirely. I'm excited to see which of Taito's legendary? back catalog a staple of my childhood is raring to make a comeback.

Like many titles in the murder-mystery genre, players will explore the crime scene, gathering evidence, solving puzzles, and interrogating suspects and witnesses in order to piece together the crime. A unique "Mindmap" mechanic will let players experiment with their findings to find links and connections between suspects, testimonies, and other evidence, ultimately gathering everyone together for what will proba??bly be a lot of j'accusing, confessing, and fainting.
