Sink into a one-bit revival

Many games have tried to capture the charm and quaint interactions of older online forums, from AIM to webrings and message boards. Videoverse takes the same nostalgic approach, mixing asp?ects? of the Miiverse and other gaming console networks.

The latest from One Night Stand developer Kinmoku (thanks for the spot, NintendoLife), Videoverse is a trip back to earlier day??s of the internet where fan forums and online so??cial networks, embedded within consoles, were all the rage.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVeXrnP_-P8

Games like Hypnospace Outlaw and Emily Is Away have tapped into older forms of online communication for storytelling before, and often to good results. Videoverse takes aim squarely at t??he Miiverse-like?? message boards, with some MSN messenger and classic message boards mixed in for good measure.

The whole affair takes place in a one-bit, pixellated tone that reminds me a bit of World of Horror. It also has some tunes from Slay the Spire and Kind Words' Clark Aboud.

Status update

Videoverse plans to be ?a decision-based narrative adven??ture, running about six hours. There are also multiple side stories, and other things to mess with like your avatar and personal quote. Hopefully I'll be able to set ambiguous song lyrics as my profile quote. Y'know, for authenticity's sake.

Accessibility options are also on board, with closed captions, self-voicing, colorblind-friendly themes, and?? clear fonts.

I'm pretty into this pitch, both on its face and the more I read into it. Up front, it's nostalgic and fun, with a gorgeous art style and great concept. The more I dig though, the more I enjoy the fun little notes you can see in the interface, and the variety of drawings shown off on the game's store page. Videoverse could resurface a lot of nostalgia fo?r this era of internet interaction, and I'm interested to see what story Kinmoku tells ??with it.

Videoverse doesn't have a date set yet, but is "coming soon." You can wishlist it on Steam here.

We hardly knew ye

Miitomo, Nintendo's first smartphone app, is finally closing shop after a little over two years. The app launched with the promise of making your Mii's more interactive and it barely achieved that. While I had some fun with Miitomo, I couldn't tell you the l??ast time I actually logged in to answer some?? funny daily questions. For any fans, today will be your last day to even take a glance.

As a reminder, basically everything you've done in Miitomo won't be saved. All those answers, cosmetic items, Sidekick Mii's and even Miifotos will be lost. You can back up your photos by saving them to your smartdevice, but everything else is kaput. Even the Miitomo themed Super Mario Run items will cease to be, which is a little odd.

The app will officially cease operations at 12 am PST on May 9, so anyone on the east coast does have a little extra time to tinker with the app. I doubt this will get the kind of send off that the Miiverse had, though.

Let's take a trip down Rabbids lane

Miiverse may be dead but it's not gone. Nintendo shut down its bizarre and lovable social network service last month, and in the lead-up to that closure, app developer Drastic Actions got to work archiving as much content as possible for posterity. The open-source end result, Archiverse, is staggering -- both in its breadth and its ??ease of use??. It works just as you'd hope.

You can dig up user accounts, posts, repl?ies, and whole game communities. There are even search options to show just drawings or just user-taken screenshots. It's like the memes never left!

This isn't a full archive, but it's huge. "While we attempted to download and store as much as possible, given the amount of time to do the archive and the crawling we had to do to get what we ended up with, there is no way to know precisely how much we missed. From Miiverse administrators deleting users and posts, users who hid their profiles, new communities created after the shutdown notice went out, to stability issues with Miiverse itself, many? things would stop a complete archive of the site."

But enough talk. Go relive the silliness that was Miiverse.

Ye old video game oddities - issue #4

In the last issue we looked back at various spooky mythos in video games, PC Gamer's continuing ?unprofessional attitude towards a plea fo??r help, and the topic of death itself!

However, for this issue we'll be mourning the death of the Miiverse (which shut down earlier this month) and looking back thr?ough the years at the pure?? insanity and magic of it all.

...But first, a groundbreaking discovery from Usenet in '96!

Prior to the release of Final Fantasy VII in early 1997, many were speculating whether or not the next entree in the series would even be on a Nintendo platform altogether, due to how expensive manufacturing cartridges became compared to CDs. However, a user named Brad Shoemaker (maybe a distant cousin of Alyssa Hatmaker!?) of Usenet in February '96 broke the news of Final Fantasy VII being announced for the PlayStation! Also, remember that if you do not believe this man, be sure to head on over to “vidgames” and go ??to news. (Oddly e?nough, I can't find anything from before 2008!?)

This “Shoemaker” in later threads would go on to discuss his findings from Jump issue #11. Giving us great insights such as: “The grafx are awesome and it looks like this will sell LOTS of Playstations!” and “I agree, this game looks REALLY cool. I forget the names of the girl and the guy with the big gun, but the guy with the swor????d, Cloud (Claude?) seems to be a wandering mercenary.”

The announcement for a Final Fantasy game st??arring “C??laude” outside of a Nintendo platform sparked a great deal of outrage in the community at the time, with tons of threads in the following days discussing the announcement and with wonderful posts such as: “This must be a joke! A cruel, sick, unfunny joke!” and “You know what this means. We will never get those games we've wanted for SNES. If we are unlucky, ??we won't get FF7 for N64. I say, LET'S MAILBOMB SQUARE!”

I bet that mail bombing did the trick! It did come out on Steam after all...sixteen years later. I'm just glad that Brad fellow had an excuse other than Dragon Ball Z Super 27 to buy a PlayStation. With that said, le??t us go back to the wonders of the Miiverse and reflect on what?? lessons these jewels of the past may teach us going forward.

H2O video game coverage will never be the same

With the Miiverse now officially shutdown, how will I get my video game water insight from MARIO WiiU? I believe this is possibly the greatest injustice of the Miiverse being gone, as nobody else in the industry is giving the hard facts on water within video games. Take for example our own Chris Carter with his "review” of Super Mario Odyssey. Sure, he delves into the journey being th??e draw over the narrative and gives his take on the complexities and mechanics of the game -- but does he ever mention the water? How ??do I know if it's amazing or nice!?

With t?he Miiverse dead and MARIO WiiU's video game H2O insight along with it, I now had to purchase a co?py of Super Mario Odyssey with unknown expectations of what I may encounter wit??h the game's water aesthetic. But, fear not, after having spent countless hours moon hunting in both the Lake and Seaside Kingdom -- I feel I can give a fair and ba?lanced insight on the water within Super Mario Odyssey for other fellow video game H2O enthusiasts.

Squids were a mistake

If you're a kid, who also happens to be a squid, you can now quit your education and legally obtain a firearm! Truly, we're in the darkest timeline. So, next time you se??e a squid kid, back up or get shot up.

I have so many questions

With the Miiverse gone, we'll never truly know all the answers. For example: when did Mewtwo gain the ability to see and go through inanimate objects? Was this a new feature in recent games? Do poké balls even work on Mewtwo with this new ability? And, of course, ?why is Zero Suit Samus twerking? Maybe it was intended to be a mystery from the start.

You know you're "weab" if...

Yes, if you feel or think this, one could describe you as a "weab." With the Mii??verse now gone, I sure hope Sam never loses his way and does something he might regret.

I know these feelings well

When I was growing up, my mom and dad sometimes really get on my nerves. But man, let me tell you, my "mom dad" really gets to me lately. Especially when they're all in the same room yelling at one another over custody (despite the fact I'm 25 years old). Things do ??get better though, eventually the mom dad will absorb you and your family into its collective, then let the good times roll!

Yeah! Rub that 13.9 million life time sales in their faces!

Sometimes I?? wonder if there are kids out there that only have acce??ss to the internet through their Wii U. You know, the type of kid with the insane over protective soccer-mom or super strict parents in general that don't let them have a smart phone or access to the computer.

I feel like KartKing 2 might be one of those kids. I can p??icture him going to school, day in and day out hearing his friends and other classmates talk about their PS4's and Xbox's. Finally, KartKing 2 comes home and turns on his Wii U, excited to hop on the Miiverse to escape his "real" friends...

...Only to still get that offline message and not know what's going on. Man, he's really going to hate that one kid with the Switch afte??r the holidays, huh?

Morph what?

If there is one thing I will genuinely miss about the Miiverse, it'll be that sense of superiority I had (because I rarely get that) reading the various Miiverse posts on some of my favorite classic games that were re-released for the virtual console. Super Metroid is one of the finest examples of this, as many players within the first few days of the virtual console release were stuck, only minutes into the game, because they had no idea how to morph? ball.

However, one such user known as PaulyU that hit internet stardom with his iconic “y can't metroid crawl” post, ended up doing arguably what most of these people couldn't -- beat the game! In an article from Kotaku back in 2013, Patricia Hernandez dug deep into the Miiverse (something I wouldn't even do) and through Pauly's profile, to discover he actually managed to beat Super Metroid...in slightly under eight hours... But dammit, h??e actually did i??t!

"This is the end... My only friend, the end..."

“Lost in a Roman wilderness of pain and all the children... Are insane... All the children... Are insane...”

But??, while those poor children are stuck forever in the Forest of Illusion, what are your favorite Miiverse posts? Share them down below and be sure to tune in next mo??nth for my special holiday issue!

Did we ever discover Y cant Metroid crawl?

It's the end of an era, as Nintendo's fun social interaction service, Miiverse, has f??inally switched out the lights.

Miiverse, which launched in 2012 on the Wii U console, then later on the 3DS, allowed players from all over the world to chat, hang-out and share messages, screenshots and amazing (and not-so-amazing) hand-drawn pictures. Over t?he years the service gave birth to various dank memes and was even used positively to show love and support of various causes and agendas.

Recent days have seen the service inundated with goodbye messages, some of which are genuinely pretty sad. As we previously reported, Nin?tendo has gathered up hundreds of these fond farewells and collated them into a thank-you image, shown below.

I wasn't a Miiverse user myself, but I ?always thought it was a nice haven for fans, and I got a kick out of some of the great art that people created for the community. Were you a regular? Hope you are left with some fond memories.

So long, farewell

We are just 10 days away from the end of the Miiverse. At 10:00 pm PST on November 7, the service goes dark just a couple days short of its five year anniversary. Starting with the Wii U and spreading to the 3DS just over a year later, the Miiverse played a wonderful role in connecting gamers with one another through art, memes and funny messages. I treasured every time I would see some crazy message on a billboard in Splatoon or got a glimpse of some stranger's achievements through the use of stamps in Super Mario 3D World. It's a nice feature, but just like other nice features from Nintendo (Everybody Votes channel, Flipnote Studio 3D) its longevity just wasn't meant to be.

As a nice send off for the service, the Miiverse team has put together this massive collage of users saying "thank you."It's nice to see there is this much love for it from both its users ??and developers. Click the image below to see the full ??picture and all the little posts that make it up.

Plenty of memes to go around

I completely forgot about Cars 3 until yesterday, when Destructoid's Nick Valdez took it upon himself to catch a day drunk buzz and watch the movie. I think it's about sentient cars and coping with life after horrific accidents, but I'm not entirely sure. I saw Cars once, but it was during a high school Spanish c?lass, so I might be a bit off on the series' plot.

One thing I am sure of, however, is that the Miiverse Community for Cars 3: Driven to Win is popping off. I stumbled across it last night when I turned my Wii U on for the first time in ages. I intended to watch some Netflix but instead spent an hour combing through different Cars 3 posts, drawings, and messages.

There's no shortage of quality content (read as: bad memes) coming from the Cars 3 community, and I figured some of them are worth sha??ring.

Shoutouts to Bobby, something ??tel??ls me he's going places in life.

RIP funny drawings and confused young boys

Much to some fans' dismay, Miiverse and StreetPass, Nintendo's rather novel communication systems for Wii U and 3DS, weren't mentioned last night during the extensive Switch presentation. If that absence left you anxious about the fate of thes??e features on the system, your fears were well-founded.

"I can answer that we're not going to be using Miiverse for Nintendo Switch," Nintendo of America's David Young informed VentureBeat, also noting a similar fate for StreetPass on the Switch. In place of Miiverse, the console will rely on existi?ng social media, but Nintendo didn't name names.

Str?aight up, that's so disappointing. These features weren't perfect, but they sure had charm.

At least we'll always have BadMiiversePosts.

And to a lesser extent, Miitomo

The day finally came -- the replacement for Club Nintendo is live -- My Nintendo. Rather than solely provide users with the bulk of their points from purchases, there's systems in place to provide rewards for checking into Miiverse and the eShop once a week, as well as (35 possible daily) points for playing Miitomo, Nintendo's first mobile app.

Personally, I'm happy with it so far, having amassed 1400 Points in just over a week, which is enough for roughly one and a half free 3DS games. Of course without the massive bonuses in tow my accrual rate will s?low over time, but for now, I'm satisfied with ?it.

So what's the bad news? Well, it seems as if physical rewards are out. In fact, even if there's a "one year Platinum" reward bonus like Club Nintendo has had in the past, I seriously doubt it will be physical, as even that program phased out physical items in its twilight years. Also, points expire in just six months, which isn't ideal.

I want to hear about yo??ur experiences with the system though -- whether you've refused to link social accounts and think the reward pipeline is too slow,?? and so on.

It's also fair

One of my favorite things about the 3DS is its innate ability to get me to turn it on even if there isn't a hit game out for it. Whether I'm tending to my plants in the Miiverse, trying to finish a puzzle, or sending pictures in Swapnote (RIP), there's always something to do on Nintendo's newest portable. Nintendo Badge Arcade is the newest kid on the block, and it ??provides players with even more activities to do on a daily basis.

In short, the app allows you to win badges as prizes, which can be placed on your home screen, either as a "block" or on top of folders. Players start with five free plays, and you'll earn bonus plays for reaching certain milestones or earning special points in the game's practice mode. If you want, you can spend $1 on five tries, but I wouldn't recommend doing so. Crane/UFO games are a huge part of Japanese culture, and are sort of notorious for ripping you off. At times, it can feel the same in Badge Arcade, but as a free distraction, I'm completely okay with it. Plus, on a few oc??casions I "knocke?d off" multiple badges into the prize area at once, so you can beat the odds.

The possibilities are nearly endless, as you can customize badges with a theme to your liking, like kart racers on a track, or coins on a Mario level background. It's a notorious way to sell people more themes for sure, and there's even an "limited time exclusive themes" section ?to boot.

It also shouldn't go unnoticed that Nintendo has basically found the best way to sell DLC -- with cute mascots and catty dialogue. The bunnies in the Streetpass Plaza and the badge arcade are?? hilarious, and are completely cavalie?r about their intention to sell you real money products.

There have been plenty of lawsuits regarding predatory advertisements to children in the past though, and having the bunny claim that the money goes to "keeping the lights on [to the cute arcade]" might be going too far in the eyes of any given judge. I'm interested in se??eing how free-to-play games are regulated in the future, but for now, a little restraint and child supervision will go a long way.

If you have a 3DS, go download it for free.

[Bonus tip: in the main mode, you can scroll around each board and try out different machines. Make sure you return to boards that you've played periodically in any given session, as badges can randomly wiggle free and fall off into the prize area over time.

Cute Pets Pick Berries and I get aroused

This Thursday, the game with the greatest Miiverse stamps of all time launches on the Wii U. Cutie Pets Pick Berries is an E-rated puzzle game that has hunky humanoid deer -- officially known as Mandeer -- matching berries while smiling intensely.

I'm seriously considering buying this game for these stamp??s. Just look at them:

The best trailer since Who Let the Cat In? starts innocently enough before suddenly showing off the glistening bodies ??of these musclebound daddy-deer laying bare and giving us fuck-me eyes. Woof!

I'm typically more of a dinosaur man myself, but suddenly I'm considering getting some of that sexy deer cologne and attempting to seduce myself a Mandeer with a huge rack, though it would probably go about as well as this guy's encounter.

Miiverse is a wacky place full of strange people. I love it. But I don't know t??hat I'll ever fully understand what is and isn't considered inappropriate in the eyes of moderators and users who seem to arbitrarily report posts. "Spoilers," for instance. I tend to do far more loo??king than talking.

Nintendo is updating the way it handles restrictions and bans on ?Miiverse. Under the old system, punished violators could simply create a new Nintendo Network ID and continue ?on their merry way.

Not anymore. "To pre??vent this in the future, we have decided to implement a new system in which the restriction applies to all accounts that use the same Wii U console or Nintendo 3DS system. This will also apply to accounts created after the restriction has been issued."

Restriction periods vary, so you're not screwed if you slip up. Still, reactions to the policy are mixed.?? Some people ??who share a console with their family aren't thrilled. Also, hahaha, "#savemiiverse."

It's not much, but it's something

It seems like the Miiverse gets a small update every other w?eek, but progress is progress! Yesterday the service was given a minor patch that changed the search function's place in the UI, and made? it a little easier to find.

Also, you can now search for users in the web version of Miiverse. Before, you could only do it on the 3DS and Wii U. Feature pari??ty is a great thing, and hopefully Nintendo will expand this uniform concept to an official Cross-Buy system.

Minor, but nice

Just a few hours ago Nintendo jumped onto the Miiverse to post a quick update regarding ?some new functionality on the PC side of the service. It turns out that you'll now be able to display your favorite game genres in yo?ur profile, up to a limit of three.

To show them off go to your user page, then user menu, then profile settings. This option has been available on the Wii U and the 3DS for a while ??apparently -- I just never used it!

As well as extra lined posts

The Miiverse is c?onstantly evolving with smaller qualit??y of life updates, and that's just fine by me. Posted on the Miiverse itself, Nintendo has given us info on a new update that adds a few extra features.

Most notably, you can now write posts and comments on multiple lines. Si?mple, but? great in terms of making posts more readable. You can also list your three favorite game genres by going to your User Page, then Profile Settings.

It??'s a nice way to get people to know you better without giving out too much personal information. The Miiverse has some limitations for sure, but for Nintendo I think it's a great compromise, and a resounding success.

Now Little Mac is as fearsome as Peach, Kirby, and Jigglypuff

When people think of Little Mac, they generally think of one of two things: punching and that radical pink sweatsuit he wears in the training scene of the original Punch-Out!! In a Miiverse post (embedded below), Super Smash Bros. developer Masahiro Sakurai shows off the snazzy outfit as it will appear in the upcom??????????????????????????ing Wii ??U release.

I got to try out Little Mac at E3, and I found him to be pretty beastly in the limited time I had. It might just be that he has such a small learning c??urve to take on, but I was able to wreck my opponents with him without much difficulty. I can only imagine the insult added to injury when players do just that while we??aring this hot pink getup.

Spread the joy

As of the latest update to Miiverse, it's now possible to embed posts online. Just click the "Embed" link at the bottom of a pos?t near the Facebook/Twitter/etc. ic??ons, copy the embed code, and then paste it on your website of choice. This can only end well.

Other changes: the Activity Feed now shows what post you received a "Yeah!" on, and the feed will show less "Yeahs!" than before; "Yeah!" notifications can be disabled in User Page > User Menu > Miiverse Settings; and the user page layout on the web version of Miiverse has be??en updated such that you can select and display your favorite hand-drawn post.

Thanks for the good word, "Tom at Nintendo."

Minor tweaks

The Wii U's Miiverse is making minor updates all the time, and this week, it's getting a few more tweaks. Firstly, you can now fo?llow or unfollow users directly, rather than opening up their profile in a two-step process.

Null screenshots will also now show up as an "X" rather than a blank section. Lastly, you can now press a high quality icon to play high-res videos on the Wii U if ??at all possible. That's not anything substantial of course, but it's nice to see Nintendo cons?tantly improving their infrastructure.

Now?? can you get to work on a real unified account game ??ownership system, Nintendo?

Draw cute birds and win a spot in-game

Two Tribes is holding a rather unique contest for Toki Tori 2, challenging gamers to draw Miiverse illustrations for a chance to have your drawing appear in-game. All you have to do is go to the Toki Tori 2 community, adhere to the weekly topic, and reply to your own drawing with the phrase "#contest." If you're selected as one of the four winners, your entry will appear as a "hidden cave drawing?" by way of an up?date.

The developer will be updating their site constantly with weekly top 10 en??tries, if you're so inclined to check?? them out.

Guys, why can't Metroid crawl?

If you're a jaded hardcore gamer, and if you've ever complained that the new generation of "dumbed down" console gamers are the bane of life, prepare to feel justified. The arrival of Super Metroid on Wii U demonstrates the depths of mental degradation humanity's su?ffered since you were a child.

The Super Metroid Miiverse community is currently littered with people asking why Samus can't crawl through a small gap. They've all taken screenshots, they're all stuck at the same place, and they all seem fully unaware of how to play Super Metroid.

Some of them think this is a glitch. It's quite possible they all think this game was released for the first time yesterday ... just imagine that. Imagine it long and hard.

You hate it, don't you? But also, you love the sense of superiority. You are at once disgusted with the simple-minded idiocy on display, and thrilled that you're better at videogames than these people. You're furious Call of Duty literally murdered the brain cells of these goons, and yet you feel so validated by what you see as proof? of everything you believe.

Today ?is your best and worst moment. Enjoy it.? Loathe it.

DENIED, SUCKAS!

Nintendo made Miiverse accessible via PC and mobile browsers yesterday, giving you the chance to interact with the (not so wide) Wii U online community while away from your console. But as Nintendo notes at the bottom of the Miiverse page, "[S]ome devices may not be able to access it."

What devices, you ask? Why, the Wii U and 3DS bro?wsers, of course!

Why you would want to visit the Miiverse website on the Wii U when the native app is sitting right the??re, I have no idea. Still, attempting to do so will display the above message, politely asking you not to return t?o the home menu and open Miiverse from there.

The 3DS message is a little more harsh, reading, "Browser error: The Internet browser you are using cannot be used to access Miiverse." Nintendo is planning on releasing a proper Miiverse 3DS app in the near future, but in the meantime, there will be?? no sneaking around Nintendo's carefully constructed walls! Shame on you hooligans!

Oh, and if you were curio??us, DSi and Wii browsers are likewise locked out.

Social network available now on PC and mobile devices, comments to come later

The Miiverse is now accessible via PC and mobile devices. Just as promised, folks can now per?use Nintendo's social ne??twork can from web browsers.

Functionality is somewhat limited at the moment. The service is presently in beta and user??s can't reply to threads just yet. Rest assured though, that ability will be made ava??ilable at a later date.

To view the Miiverse from? a browser users will ?need to create a Nintendo Network ID on a Wii U console. Those without access can still get a feel for the community as a number of threads are available via a sampler.

Nintendo will also bring the Miiver??se to 3DS someti??me later this year.

No mention of the Dafoeverse, sadly

In a recent interview, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata dove into some interesting topics, most notably the Miiverse and how it came about. Iwata also reiterates that the ?Wii U GamePad can transcen?d just a gaming audience with multimedia.

Although the history of the Miiverse has been touched on before, he also remind?s us that a 3DS Miive??rse is coming:

Once the Miiverse hits the 3DS, it will be huge. Just imagine the possibilities of playing ??Animal Crossing: New Leaf while sharing your experiences on the Miiverse. Now that’s something!

In some ways it's easy to get snarky about how Nintendo?? is finally c??atching up with the rest of the industry from a technological infrastructure standpoint: but mostly, it's just nice to see Nintendo actually heading forward and trying new things.

The 3DS already has a ton of software and a booming eShop -- with the Miiverse to augment that, it will become an unstoppable portable force. If you're interested in the Miiverse in general, it's worth checking out the transcribed interview at Siliconera.

The Wii U's Miiverse community network is my absolute favorite thing about the console thus far. This is in no small part due to our very own Jim Sterling's declaration that the community for Rabbids Land would see better use as a community honoring the immensely talented Willem Dafoe. The inter??net heard the messag?e (mostly) and the content you'll find in the "Dafoeverse" is some of the most creative and entertaining stuff you'll find in the whole of the Miiverse.

I'm absolutely hooked on it, but what about all those who haven't been able to purchase a Wii U and join the fun? On Saturday Morning Hangover, we're here to help and have been making weekly visits to the Dafoeverse to discover all t?he strange and wonderful art and comments.
