Although it's a hugely successful and much-beloved game, Fallout 4 sometimes gets criticized for its continued scaling back of more traditional role-playing elements. It's these elements that arguably made the series such a cult hit in the first place. Since Bethes?da took over for the third installment, it definitely feels like things have slid into more action than straight-up RPG.

Of the later Fallout games that have come about, New Vegas is almost universally considered the best in the series. People are always keen to return to this modern classic, and that includes the modding community, where Nexus Mods user bp42s (thanks, DSO Gaming) brings us "REPUTATION."

Fallout 4: a green message on-screen explains how the player's repuattion in Diamond City means the are now "liked."
Image via bp42s/Nexus Mods.

Aside from being spelled out in a way that makes it feel like you should shout it out loud with your arms held aloft, this mod adds one of New Vegas' much-missed features into Fallout 4. Specifically and as th??e name implies it adds reputation, allowing you to gain fame or infamy among known fa?ctions.

Just like in the good old days

This means you can now achie??ve good standin?g with a number of settlements across the nuclear-annihilated city of Boston, which can yield rewards. For example: having a positive reputation may "provide you with access to their gear, materials, or a tribute chest in your honor."

You can also? get access to supply crates, which can become unlocked if that particular faction sees you in a more favorable light. Additionally, you can get unique perks for reaching an "idolized" status. These perks are said to be powerful, but "not game-breaking or unbalanced."

Alternatively, if you decide to be an utter bastard on your Fallout 4 travels, you can earn such negative esteem, that people will send out hit squads, similar to the Legionary Assassins in New Vegas. Vendors will also increas??e their prices for both buying and selling depending on what they think of? you.

Also, salutes have been added to the game, and bp42s says ?that generic NPCs "in the more organized or militaristic factions will have a chance to salute you when you look at them, depending? on how liked you are." It's all about making friends or enemies, then.

It's a nice little revival of a role-playing element that seems to have gone away completely in the Fallout series. The fact that your actions and antics can once again influence how citizens and other wastelanders regard you and whether they want to shoot you in the face is something I think a lot of fans of the series will be keen to see in Fallout 4.

As with any RPG, customization is at the heart of Starfield. But for many players, the game doesn't quite? go far enough in this area. This is pretty typical of customization in Bethesda titles.

Luckily, the Starfield modding community is on the case. We're going to take a look at the 10 best Starfield customization mods you can download right now to bring your pe??rfect protagonist to life in Bethesda's space ??RPG.

Extended Facial Sculpting

There's a lot to enjoy about any video game character creator that allows you to go wild and create some absolute monstrosities. Starfield puts the brakes on that a little, but don't worry - that's where Extended Facial Sculpting comes in.

Simply put, it adds even more sliders that you can use to customize your Starfield protagonist. Now, you can pull your character's facial bones almost as far as you want in any direction, for some truly terrifying results. Real??ly, isn't that what character creation is all about?

Starfield Hair and Beards - RTFP

best Starfield customization mods
Image via zone79/Nexus Mods

Of all the Starfield customization mods on this list, this might just be the best. Starfield Hair and Beards - RTFP adds tons of? standalone hair and beard options to the ga??me, which can be used on both male and female characters.

What really makes this mod stand out is how unique each style is. They're all different from what you can expect to find in the base game of Starfield, yet they still look like they totally belong i?n this universe.

Cyberpunk Eyes - RTFP

best Starfield customization mods
Image via Nyvrak/Nexus Mods

There are no prizes for guessing what you get when you install Cyberpunk Eyes - RTFP. 97 new eye colors in Starfield, covering just about all the bases you'll ever need in th??is? regard.

While the vibrant new eye colors are great, the cyberpunk-themed ones are the highlight here. Some eye textures look like they're integrated with various pieces of technology, while others even have a deep black sclera for a unique look you won't find in vanilla Starfield. This one's a must-have.

Starfarer's Makeup - RTFP

best Starfield customization mods
Image via Nyvrak/Nexus Mods

In total, Starfarer's Makeup - RTFP adds six blushes, eight eyeliners, eight tattoos, and six lipstick accents to Starfield's charac??ter creator. All are completely standalone - no re?placers here.

Ultimately, Starfarer's Makeup - RTFP won't completely revolutionize your Starfield character creation experience, but it can enhance it, even a little bit, meaning it's?? wor?th having.

More Piercings - RTFP

best Starfield customization mods
Image via Nyvrak/Nexus Mods

More Piercings - RTFP is perfect for adding that final piece of personality to your Starfield character, with 14 new piercing options for females and 12 for males. Earrings, n??ose rings, septum piercings - you name it, this mod has it.

Bethesda games have often missed out these more minor details of character customization, but this mod from Nyvrak is a great option for Starfield players.

Tattoo Recycle - RTFP

best Starfield customization mods
Image via Nyvrak/Nexus Mods

Tattoos! How can you complain about more tattoos? Tattoo Recycle - RTFP is straightforward stuff, giving you 22 new tattoos to experiment with during Starfield character creation.

Some of these tattoos are minor variations of others, but there's enough variation here that there's something that every player can use. One thing is for sure: th??e tattoos found in Tattoo Recycle - RTFP are loud, so if you're searching for more subtle designs, you won't find them here.

Vivid Hair Colors

best Starfield customization mods
Image via GothikaGeist/Nexus Mods

You can absolutely make the argument that Starfield's hair options are a little too dark by default, but Vivid Hair Colors is here to address this. All 15 o??f the game's hair colors have been replaced by this mod, providing brighter versions instead.

This includes beard and eyebrow hair, too, extending this Starfield customization mod a little further. Since the hair textures are now just solid colors, creator GothikaGeist has been able to half the texture size, meaning Vi?vid Hair Colors is a?lso a slight performance optimizer.

Subtle Moles and Freckles - RTFP

best Starfield customization mods
Image via Nyvrak/Nexus Mods

If you're a gamer who likes to dive into the nitty-gritty details of your Starfield character customization, then Subtle Moles and Freckles - RTFP could be right up your alley.

Adding six freckle and nine new mole options, this mod is intended to be used alongside others to provide the final touch of detail to your Starfield protagonist. It's standalone, too, so it d?oesn't replace any of the game's existing options in this regard.

Better Backgrounds

best Starfield customization mods
Image via senterpat/Nexus Mods

Better Backgrounds isn't a mod that changes your Starfield character's appearance. Instead, it's all about changing their background, making big changes to the vanilla options as well as adding 20 new ones. Creator senterpat felt the original offerings were "pretty lackluster, with no real impact on gameplay at al??l."

They've set out to fix that here, with backgrounds now encouraging players to change their playstyles to reap the rewards. I'm counting this one as a Starfield customization mod.

Shattered Space Headparts

Starfield: Shattered Space mods

Starfield: Shattered Space mods have already made a ton of additions to Bethesda's latest expansion, and Shattered Space Headparts is one of many. This is a pre??tty small addition, but one that's worth adding to y?our load order.

But what does it actually do? Shattered Space has six new hairstyles used exclusively by NPCs, and this mod simply makes th??em usable for players, too.

Are you tired of me talking about Half-Life mods yet? Good. I actually have no idea how you responded, as?? this was written in the past. I'm essentially time-traveling right now. Hmmm...best not to think about that concept.

Anyway, Valve's 1998 shooter not only set new heights for what was possible in the FPS genre, but it remains steadfast in the limelight thanks to a dedicated modding community. For this installment of "How Long Can I Keep Harping On About Half-Life," I present a mod which is set in the Aliens universe.

//youtu.be/H65aYRHseVY

Yes, that's "Aliens" with an "s." As noted by DSO Gaming, Team Lambda has just released the first episode of Solitary Echoes; a single-player campaign that pits you against the iconic ?Xeno?morph creatures and is set on LV-513.

Hopefully, it won't be game over, man, game over

The team behind the mod says they are both "extremely proud and to be honest also a little scared" about the release of the first episode. The description on ModDB ?says they've "worked on this for one and a half years now," and "hitting that up?load button" has given them the heebie-jeebies.

The images alone really put me into the mindset of this being an Aliens game, with its familiar set pieces, while the above video will easily make you forget this was made in Half-Life. In fact, I'd go so far as to say this almost looks like it could be an Alien vs. Predator game. The report from DSO says the 3D models used in Solitary Echoes may well have come from AvP2.

There doesn't appear to be any mention of when the next episode will release, or how many there will be in total. Suffice it to say, this is definitely one to check out if you like a horror-based first-person shooter set in a James Cameron-esque universe. I realize that could describe pretty much any Alien video game, but it's worth repeating that this was all done in the original Half-Life engine. Impressive, says I.

It must be a huge weight off the collective shoulders of everyone at Bloober Team to see the remake of Silent Hill 2 is doing pretty well for itself. Steam shows the game as "Overwhelmingly Po?sitive" for all reviews, so it definitely proves the wait was worth it in the end.

As a survival horror game, Silent Hill 2 is dripping with mood, atmosphere, anguish, sorrow, and grotesque denizens. What it's not dripping with, however, is a potassium-based snack. This is where Nexus Mods user Stevebg23 comes to the rescue with ??a mod that changes the pistol James finds into a large banana.

Silent Hill 2: James Sunderland wields a giant spoon like a weapon.
Image via Stevebg23/Nexus Mods.

As if that wasn't enough, you'll also find that the lead pipe a classic of the original 2001 release, many would say has also been changed. Now, the player will find themselves beati??ng the snot out of monsters with a giant spoon.

Because of reasons, I guess

The reason for the "Banana Gun and Spoon Pipe" mod is simple: the creator "always wanted to have a silly mod," and this is the result. They also ?reassure us you can reload the skin of ??the gun, and that the spoon is "shiny and silvery and nice to handle against the hordes of evil coming your way." Comforting to know.

Despite its seriousness, anyone who's played the original Silent Hill 2 knows the developer was not afraid to get a little silly. The infamous dog ending showed a kind of light-h??earted irreverence for this drab horror experience that many of us were absolutely not expecting the first time around.

Of course, the game is still the same, even if you do swap out the pistol for a healthy-looking, half-peeled banana??. It's nice to know James is getting his vitamins while battling t??he inner demons of his guilty conscience.

There’s mischief and spooks in the air as we arrive at Halloween, and The Sims 4 is taking it up a notch by releasing the Life and Death expansi??on pack. Play as a Grim Reaper to reap souls, and guide S?ims to the afterlife.

Of course, even if you don’t plan on getting the new pack, you can still enjoy some terrifying fun in The Sims 4 with some amazing mods. And they’re free! Here are some of ?the best spooky mods you can add to your game for Halloween.

Best scary mods for Sims 4 for Halloween

Image via Sacrificial Mods

Haunted Mirror

What fits better in a haunted house than a creepy haunted mirror? If your Sims are looking for something horrific, this mod is perfect. The Haunted Mirror mod by Sacrificial Mods lets your Sims unleash a ghostly bride named Hannah by chanting her name in??to the mirror.

Beware, though, since Hannah will then make it her mission to kill your Sims. She’ll use methods like her demon powers and even a chainsaw to get the job done. Make sure to protect ??yourself. Sacrificial makes some amazing mods, a lot of them horror-themed, so it’s no surprise we’ll see them again on this list.

Image via Zero

Island Living Sirens

Unlike the other occults in the game, unfortunately, mermaids are pretty basic when it comes to skills and powers. But, with the Siren mod from Zer??o, you can turn your regular mermaid into a man-eating horror fr?om the deep ocean.

By having your mermaid eat the Siren Kelp, they’ll ??transform into a horrific creature capable of drinking the blood of any helpless Sim in the water. They can lure them in using a siren’s song, and drink blood just like vampires??. Even more, sirens can even drink enough blood to kill the Sim.

Image via Sacrificial Mods

Zombie Apocalypse

If you’ve ever wanted your Sims to face the challenge of the walking dead, then the Zombie Apocalypse mod from Sacrificial Mods is what you n??eed. You can cause your ent??ire world to be infected with a zombie plague that requires grit, cunning, and plenty of supplies to survive.

If you wan?t to take the villain route, you can spread the virus yourself to end the world. It’s up to you how your Sims survive, or don’t survive, the zombie apocalypse. It even includes an in-depth survivor system so your Sims can become saviors in a world taken over by the hungry undead.

Image via Necrodog

Monster Factory

Frankenstein is one of the most ubiquitous creatures when it comes to Halloween, and now you can have him in your Sims 4 game. With the Monster Factory mod from Necrodog, your Sims can become the ultimate mad scientist and craft a terri??fying monster to lurch about.

Your Sim wi??ll need to purchase body parts to craft their monster, and using the various scientific objects will create a brand new life, with bandages and all.

Image via Sacrificial Mods

Extreme Violence

This one is definitely not for kids. Extreme Violence, another great mod by Sacrifi?cial, brings all sorts of violence and gore to your game. Not only does it include endless ways to kill other Sims, ranging from stabbing to beating, but it also includes a reputation system and the ability to ??join gangs.

It’s the best mod around if you’re looking to make a creepy serial killer terrorizing the town, or even just spice up your vanilla gameplay. Each death comes with its own animation, and there’s plenty of blood included in each one. While this mod is great year-round,? Halloween is a particula??rly great time to bring some violence to your Sims.

Image via Necrodog

Cannibalism

You can give your Sims a taste for human flesh using the Cannibalism mod from Necrodog. When standing at the cannibalism altar, your Sim can choose to eat the heart of a dead canni?bal to begin their cul??inary journey into eating other Sims.

Once you’re a cannibal, your Sim can choose to kill and eat any Sim they want or perform autopsies on already deceased Sims to harvest their flesh for consumption. If you have the Monster Factory mod from above, you can?? even use those same harvested parts to create your m??onster. What a crossover!

Image via Sacrificial Mods

Possessed Child

A young boy named Jonathon Colby had a short, horrible life, but now he’s back for revenge. With the Possessed Child mod from Sacrificial, if your Si??m chants Jonathan’s name at his grave, his spirit will be unleashed to wreak havoc and horror on any Sim that gets too close. He can stab, bite, and even steal your soul.

Not only does this mod let your Sims take on this horrifying ghost, but they can even choose to ?become the possessed child themselves to go on a most horrible murder spree. There’s nothing spookier than demon children during Halloween, and that’s why this mod is perfect for this time of year.

Image via Sacrificial Mods

Nights of Terror

Another mod from Sacrificial Mods, Nights of Terror allows for a great scary challenge for your Sims. For three hours, a terrifying entity known as The Blood Huntress will cause untold chaos and horror during a Night of Terror. She’ll kill anyone who get??s in? her way, in some truly horrifying ways.

Your Sim?? is able to fi??ght back and protect themselves from The Blood Huntress, but it won’t be easy. And, if your Sim is killed by her, they don’t even get a visit from the Grim Reaper. They just become a pile of bones as their soul is lost. How horrifying!

Image via Zero

Vampires Can Kill

Vampires are definitely an in-depth occult in Sims 4, but unfortunately, they aren’t particularly dangerous because they can’t kill any Sims. The Vampires Can Kill mod from Zero changes that and allows your vampires the ability to drin?k so ?much blood that they kill their victims.

Not only does this mod include a custom dea??th animation for those who have fallen prey, but they’ll get a?? custom ghost as well. If you want your vampires to be more dangerous for the spooky season, this mod is the one you’ll want.

Image via Sacrificial Mods

Life Tragedies

From the name of this mod, you would think it would be more sad than terrifying. And you’re partially right, but the Life Tragedies mod from Sacrificial Mods has an e?dge you can release famous serial killers onto your Sims world like Jason Vorhees, as well as some original serial killers.

K??illers might show up in your town as part of the tragedies of life, and there’s a chance your Sim could get murdered by one?? of them. It’s pretty realistic, seeing as how there are ways your Sims can escape the killers, and how they can be caught. It’s never been easier to turn your Sims game into a slasher film.

Let's play a game. Let's see how long we can talk about Half-Life without bringing up the elusive third entry yet to emerge. Wait. Damn, we've already lost. How long was that? Anyway, yes, despite continued hopes that Valve may still make a third installment in its iconic FPS series, we're still not there.

So why bother with HL3 when we have Half-Life at home? More specifically, we have mods. And even though Halloween is now over (just), we can still get our spook on with this download from ModDB user ScriptedSnark.

Half-Life: a small flashlight shines on a piece of paper that contains creepy text.
Image via ScriptedSnark/ModDB

This one may actually spark a bit of nostalgia in some especially those with an interest in indie horror games as it reimagines Slender: The Eight Pages in the original Half-Life engine, GoldSrc. From the images alone, it does look to be a faithful take on the cult Slender game, which, by the way, is more than 12 years ol?d at this?? point.

What even is time?!

I remember The Eight Pages quite fondl??y. Though short, it very much left an impression on people who dared to open up the .exe file. If you're not familiar with the game, it came to prominence around the time the whole Slenderman "mythos" started to take off.

The game itself placed you in a wooded area in the mid??dle of the night, with naught but a flashlight to help you see your way through. The object was to collect eight pages that have been scattered around the area, stapled onto a tree, for example.

The twist was that each one you picked up would ramp up the scares. The creepy Slenderman would begin to emerge, teleporting closer to your location to try and capture you. The music would thump, your heartbeat would race faster, and, for some of us, collecting just a f??ew pages was en??ough to close down the application.

It's nice to see Slenderman despite him no longer being the horror darling of the internet coming back via Half-Life's engine. H??owever, it remains to be seen whether the mod gives ?you a crowbar for you to slap the ghoulish creature silly.

Although it's not the largest video game ever in terms of map size (not even when compared to other Elder Scrolls titles), Skyrim still boasts a hefty amount of land to explore. Its vastness gives plenty to see? while out and about on (mostly) fun quests, but there's no doubt that it could stand to be a bit bigger.

That's where Nexus Mods user Nevah comes onto the scene. As noted by DSO Gaming, we've got an opportunity to explore a brand-new island, thanks t??o "Nevah’s Isle Redux." Not only is t??here an island/world to explore, but the mod also contains a ghost village, complete with a home for the player.

Skyrim: two green-armored soldiers stand by a wooden ship at the docks in Solitude.
Image via Nevah/Nexus Mods.

The description on Nexus says to g?et to the island, you'll need to head to the do??cks at Solitude. There's also a memorandum to the creator's father at the northwest point of the island, as well as "many secrets and hidden rooms."

To cleanse or not

Eagle-eyed readers will have spotted the word "redux" in the mod's title. This is because it's a redo of a previous creation. While it's pretty much the same as the older version, this time around, they've added an optional side quest that lets you restore the island/gh?ost village to its former glory.

Nevah strongly recommends going through with the quest, as the island is "far more beautiful that way" and, once restored, will have "no more cobwebs or decay or o?vergrowth." Of course, it's entirely up to you, so if you don't mind wandering around a new island that's home to ghost vendors, that's an option as well.

It's also recommended to install the mod manually, with the ESP ideally at the bottom of your Skyrim loadout list. It should also work alongside any other modifications you've got install?ed, but, as anyone will tell you, there's always a slight risk with these things.?? We like to live dangerously, yeah?

Reeve’s Furniture

Image via Yablon

One of the most fun aspects of Minecraft is building, and the Reeve’s Furniture mod by Yablon gives you plenty of new decorations and pieces of furniture to design with. The Halloween update is what gets it p?ut on this list, and it gives you tons of spooky décor.

There are cobwebs, graves, pumpkins, and more. While this mod is mainly cosmeti?c, it’s one of the best for players who prefer building their homes in peace. If you’re looking to build the perfect haunted house or a charming Halloween village, this mod is one you need.

Beware The Rain

Image via TheBladeNinja

Terrifying mobs are a great way to celebrate Halloween and Beware The Rain by TheBladeNinja adds four horrifying o??nes. You’ll come across these demons during the rainfall, hence the na??me. It makes this mundane weather a ton more exciting, and dangerous.

These mobs will stalk you, chase you, and kill you for getting too close. It makes your world feel much more threatening, ?and the designs of these mobs in particular are incredibly well done. It’s a great mod for a little?? more challenge and a lot more scares during Halloween.

Vampirism

Image via maxanier

The Vampirism mod by maxanier lets you turn into a vampire, and we don?’t mean the sparkly kind. When you get bitten, you can drink blood from animals and villagers, become stronger and faster, and plenty more.

However, you can also choose to become a vampire hunter and take on these cla??ssic horror icons. Both vampires and hunters have a progression system that allows them to get stronger and more powerful, and the mod even includes a new biome to explore. Perfect for spooky season.

That’s Not a Deer

Image via CEOofAUTIZMZ

This mod adds some adorable deer into the game! But they are acting very? strange in the woo?ds. They keep staring at those passing by, and why was one standing on their hind legs like a person? These deer are acting very odd, but it’s probably nothing, right?

That’s Not a Deer by CEOofAUTIZMZ adds what seems like cute deer into your world, but they aren’t what they seem. You’ll begin finding corpses of all kinds, and the deer will begin to follow you. It’s one of the best horror mods you’ll find for Minecraft, and perfect All Hallow’s Eve.

There aren't many games that mix heavy-handed literature with first-person shooting. BioShock is one example that springs to mind. Not so much Half-Life 2, but someone is in the midst of creating a mod for Valve's iconic FPS that seems to??? take cues from the classics.

ModDB user GRÆMAMËTH is currently working on "Goethe's Last Laugh," a full-conversion modification for Half-Life 2 that, from the images alone, looks wonderfully bizarre. Oh, hell. I don't think I could do it justice, so here's what the creator ha??s to say? about the project (after you've checked out the footage below, of course):

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9CldFfHbjI

In the abstra?ct, it’s a working class power fantasy about addiction and revolution...

T??ake control of Jackson Ian Faust, a 300 year old, self destructive, misanthropic vampire, and investigate the many unusual phenomenon of Gondolas city, a fictional civilization set on the sinking monster island of Duciano.

No mention of a Mephistopheles-inspired gravity gun

It's still in development at the moment, with no release date yet. However, you can keep an eye on progress from the ModDB page linked above, or follow it on Itch.io. This one definitely seems too good to miss out on, especially with its proposed theme?s.

Now, I've never read Faust, so I can't say how certain this Half-Life 2 mod will match up with the original text. But I do know that it must have inspired the?? project, given that it's titled after the play's author, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and has you play as someone literally called Faust.

It's also where we get the term "Faustian" from, to?? refer to any kind of deal or barter that leads to dire consequences. I'm hoping there'll be some of that in GRÆMAMËTH's mod. If not, at least we get to play as a cynical vampire that's three centuries old. That's always dope. Do people say "dope" t?hese days?

Thanks largely to the recent Shattered Space DLC, Starfield has been enjoying something of a resurgence. SteamDB shows? there has been a bit of an uptick in player count on PC, even if the game overall is not exactly beaming w?ith universal praise.

All that aside, people are still playing it and modding for it. A recent bit of fan-made content as spotted by DSO Gaming injects a little bit more realism into Starfield, thanks to NPC schedules and business ope??ning hours.

Starfield: an NPC lies on a bed with soft toys next to them.
Image via FlippingEggs/Nexus Mods.

Created by user FlippingEggs, "NPC?s Have Routines and Stores Have Schedules" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue as a mod title, but it does exactly what it says on the tin. It effectively gives a bunch of non-playable characters a bit?? of vim, which uses custom AI to give them their own schedules.

"Sorry, bud. I'm closed now."

It should be noted that not every Starfield ch?aracter has been given the gift of a timetable. The description over on Nexus Mods has the f??ollowing to say:

36 named characters now have daily schedules
4 unnamed but unique characters now have daily schedules
10 new robots work in various stores, so you can buy stuff when the store owner isn't there (Styx included)
57 data slates added to various store countertops and NPCs' personal spaces. Some of these slates are simple notifications of business hours, while others offer you a window into the lives of characters and where you can find them when they aren't working.
1 of these data slates is an Easter egg for The Ex?panse

Oh, yeah. That's the other thing. Because the mod gives many businesses in the game actual opening hours, robots can be on-hand to wo??rk through the night while the proprietor gets some much-needed r??est. You'll find that stores and their owners in places like New Atlantis, Akila City, Neon, and more have been given these schedules.

The creator goes on to say:

If you f?ind a shopkeeper while they'r?e away from their store, or sleeping, their normal dialogue tree will not be available and you won't be able to trade with them.

They've also been careful to make sure the mod doesn't interrup??t vanilla quests and should be compatible with a lot of other instal?lations you have installed. But it's best to check beforehand.

I don't know why, but "NPCs Have Routines and Stores Have Schedules" puts me in-mind of Oblivion. Remember in the early 2000s when Bethesda was promoting its upcoming Elder Scrolls 4? Todd Howard and his team were so excited about its new "Radiant AI" system, which essentially gave NPCs their ow?n daily routines, including eating, sleeping, and practicing their archery. Ah, to be young again. And also a non-playable character in a role??-playing game.

Ah, Skyrim. If it weren't for the fact that you were a genuinely good ?(albeit buggy to hell) game that stays afloat thanks to the modding c??ommunity, you probably would have disappeared into obscurity long ago. Also, hey, here's something you never, ever hear in the game: "Oh no! Look out for that tank!"

Until now, that is. If your WW2 artillery needs are not being met by Skyrim, perhaps this mod will scratch that battle scar. As reported by DSO Gaming, Nexus Mods user MixedMartialArtist brings "World of Tanks" to The Elder Scrolls 5.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=63g7KvBLaWE

It is, as you can imagine (and as the above clip shows), a means of combining the fantasy world of Bethesda's creation with the ability to and I quote "partake in The Greatest Tank Battles in history." Did I mention the dest?ructive tanks? I'm pretty sure I mentioned the destructive tanks. It sort of answers the question of what would happen if you mashed up fanciful role-playin?g elements with world war re-enactments.

"You're finally awake. Here's a Mauser."

To put it in the creator's own words:

Now Skyrim can be played as a War-Tank Battle Game with an endless amount of epic battles. Skyrim is now full of action and chaos as armies of both si??des continue to press into enemy territory with their squads of infantry and armored vehicles. Take part in the war by joining the civil war, and destroy your enemies with the plethora of weapons at your disposal - guns, rockets, tanks, bombs, artillery, you name it. Build your army with new troops and tanks at forts, or simply use your abilities to take control of nearby patrols to follow you. Shoot your machine gun from your commander's cupola, mowing down hordes of bunched up infantry, and fire your main gun to eliminate enemy armor.

I haven't had a chance to download and try "World of Tanks" myself yet, but the clips are putting me in mind of the old Medal of Honor games. Rem??ember those? The idea that we can inhabit a fictional realm where World War 2 tanks and dragons can duke it out for moral supremacy is th?e sole reason we keep on gaming, I feel.

That and The Elder Scrolls 6 still feels like a long way off from releasing. Yeah, yeah. I know. Change the record, already. Or change the Instagram Reel. I'm not sure how to modernize retro sayings. Anyway, what was I saying? Oh yes. Skyrim.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a game that lives and dies by its companions. The characters in Larian's RPG are arguably its biggest strength???, but they can be even better.

This collection of the 10 best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods alters both the ??look and behaviors of the game's followers. These are the must-haves, the cream of the crop.

More Reactive Companions

Image via LightningLarryL/Nexus Mods

More Reactive Companions is a Baldur's Gate 3 mod that makes the game truly feel like a group adventure. It doesn't even add any new content, instead repurposing many of the throwaway dialogu?e lines used by the characters when playing as them.

These lines will be used as "companion chatter" when using this mod. Each one has been hand-picked for every scenario by mod author Lig??htningLarryL, giving it a real feeling of authenticity. It makes a massive difference to make your party feel more alive than ever.

Full Custom Companions (Hirelings)

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via adriant1978/Nexus Mods

Full Custom Companions (Hirelings) expands the hireling system in a huge way. Instead of being constrained to the same old hirelings offered by Withers, this allows you to customize your own. You can even use Baldur's Gate 3 race mods to create extra unique hirelings.

That's not all this mod does, though. It also allows you to duplicate regular NPCs and use them as companions. These custom hirelings can also use tadpoles to gain illithid powers, making them feel much more like a regular BG3 companion.

Summon Guenhwyvar - Drizzt Legendary Panther Companion

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via GothHolliday/Nexus Mods

If you're a Dungeons & Dragons lore fanatic, Summon Guenhwyvar - Drizzt Legendary ?Panther Companion should be right up your alley. The panther Guenhwyvar is a popular figure in the Forgotten Realms lore, ??and with this mod, you can summon her to fight by your side.

Upon installation, you'll be given a figurine of Guenhwyvar. This can only be used to summon her once per Long Rest, so it's not entirely overpowered. Overall, it's a solid, lore-friendly addition to Baldur's Gate 3.

Adjustable Party Limit

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via PixellBytes/Nexus Mods

Oh, you want a party? Adjustable Party Limit can give you a party. As the name suggests, it allows you to change the number of companions allowed ??in your party at a time, selecting from anywhere between 1 and 16.

There are a few similar mods that do this, so why's this one the best? According to mod author PixellBytes, it's the only one that has "built-in ways to prevent yo??u from encountering some of the most infamous party limit extender bugs, such as the Act 1 lake boat bug and the long? resting bug." So, there.

JWL Scratch is Back

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via UmbralJewels/Nexus Mods

We all love Scratch; he's the best boy. But he isn't the most useful boy in combat scenarios. You can fix this with JWL Scratch is Back, which adds 11 elemental-themed variants of Baldur's Gate 3's cutest pup.

This is done in a lore-friendly way, giving you 11 enchanted collars to collect throughout the game, each of which offers a different buff to BG3's canine companion. R??ecommended if you want to bring Scratch along for the adventure.

Fireproof Karlach

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via Belinn/Nexus Mods

If you think about it, even on a surface level, it doesn't make sense that Karlach takes fire damage in Baldur's Gate 3. She burns so hot that you can't even touch her!

Obviously, resistance doesn't always equal immunity, but I reckon Fireproof Karlach makes more sense to have than not. It simply gives her the Hellish Resistance trait, nullifying ?all ??fire damage.

Really Shadowheart

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via iamy0urdad/Nexus Mods

Really Shadowheart might be one of the most considered Baldur's Gate 3 mods out there. It completely alters her character in Act 3 t?o be more consistent with Acts 1 and 2. But wh?at does that actually mean?

For starters, romanced Shadowheart no longer tolerates cheating. No more casual fun with Halsin or the Drow Twins for you! It's much more in line with the Shadowheart we meet earlier in the game, but that's only the tip of the iceberg for everything this mod does. She'll try to save her parents no matter what, sh??e'll take a lot more persuasion to kill Viconia, and you can even propose to her if you do choose to save her parents. That's right: you can be married to Shadowheart in the epilogue with this mod. 10/10, no notes.

Karlach Overhaul WIP

Image via vyrelis/Nexus Mods

Nexus Mods user vyrelis has seriously cooked with Karlach Overhaul WIP. It's by far and away the best overhaul of the tiefling companio?n's face, making it look a little softer than the bas??e game.

It also gives her a cool new hairstyle that, in my opinion, trumps the vanilla one. Overhauling the appearance of a fan-favorite character will alwa??ys be controversial to some players, but this one's pretty tasteful.

A Visit with Volo - Astarion Reimagined

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via yveslight/Nexus Mods

Now, for something a little more dramatic. A Visit with Volo - Astarion Reimagined de-ages Neil Newbon's popul??ar vampire a good 20 years, giving him a look closer aligned to something you might see on a runway or the front of a magazine.

This pretty-boy-Astarion aesthetic won't be for everyone, and understandably so. But for those who do like it, it could prove to be one of the best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods out there.

Lae'zel - Alternate Faces

best Baldur's Gate 3 companion mods
Image via Seracen/Nexus Mods

Of all the Lae'zel overhauls on Nexus Mods, I reckon Lae'zel - Alternate Faces takes the crown. This one offers numerous face options, each based on a different Baldur's Gate 3 race.

The differences from the base game v??ersion of Lae'zel are pretty small, so you won't be left feeling like she's a totally new character with this mod.

Starfield's Shattered Space expansi?on may be brand-new, but that hasn't stopped talented modders from getting busy adding and changing content in Bethesda's latest ?expansion.

Let's take a look at the 10 of the best mods made just for Starfield: Shattered Space, shall we?

Shattered Space Delayed Start

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via Solshura/Nexus Mods

It's recommended that players be Level 35 before starting Starfield: Shattered Space. However, the game itself gives players the option to do it early, albeit underleveled. Unsuspecting gamers could be caught off guard by this, findin?g themselves stuck in areas they simply can't progress through.

Shattered Space Delayed Start solves this problem. Using this mod from Nexus Mods user Solshura??, the quest to begin the DLC won't trigger until you're at the recommended level of 35. A s??imple quality-of-life fix, but one worth considering in your load order.

Shattered Space No Red Fog

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via MrTroubleMaker/Nexus Mods

If Starfield: Shattered Space was a little too red for your personal taste, then this mod has you covered. Shattered Space No Red Fog simply removes the red tint ?from the fog, rather than removing the mist altogether.

While this is an extremely small Starfield mod, the? abundance of red in this DLC means it should make a huge difference to the visuals in your game. But maybe you love the overwhelming red hue, in which case, you should probably leave this mod.

Royal Leveled Enemies - Shattered Space

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via JaeDL/Nexus Mods

The creator of Royal Leveled Enemies - Shattered Space, JaeDL, is the talented modder behind the base game's Royal Arena - Leveled Enemies mod. This is simply an?? expansion of that mod, adjusting the AI and leveling of the game's enemies.

This mod is ideal if you feel that some of the DLC's combat encounters become too easy, especially in the latter stages. JaeDL is continually updating the mod to?o, tweaking each NPC to make sure they're fun to fight.

Shattered Space Headparts

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via Neyr/Nexus Mods

In Starfield: Shattered Space, there are several hairstyles worn by Va'ruun NPCs that players can't access. Luckily, Shattered Space Headparts is here t?o save the day. Whether you like them or not, having more options is always a good thing.

According to creator Leyr, they were already marked as playable in the files and just ne?eded to be moved to the right place for players to use them for character creation.? That's a classic Bethesda moment if I have ever seen one.

Shattered Space - Better Rewards and Consequence

best Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via pietro0games1/Nexus Mods

You'll feel the effects of Shattered Space - Better Rewards and Consequence throughout your entire playthrough of Starfield's first DLC. As the title kind of implies, it i??mproves the quest? rewards during the DLC, adding seven new unique items as well as a new ship.

According to creator pietro0games1, it also "reworks some features of the DLC to increase the reward for completing it and the agony of your decisions." This is done to give Shattered Space even more replayability. You're welcome, Bethesda.

VaruunKai Reimagined - A GRiNDTerra Mod

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via ItsmePaulieB/Nexus Mods

VaruunKai Reimagined - A GRiNDTerra Mod might be the biggest Starfield: Shattered Space mod released so far. It alters existing a??nd adds new biomes, randomizes the size of biome flora and fauna, and switches things up with?? some different weapon patterns in the DLC.

That's a lot of change in the environment, and you're going to notice an immediate difference if you've played a lot of Starfield: Shattered Space. We'd recommend y??ou experience the base game's environments first, but ?this is perfect for a repeat playthrough.

Xeno Master - DLC Support Addon

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via Ghostrider231/Nexus Mods

The original Xeno Master mod for Starfield allowed players to tame and capture creatures from around the galaxy. Xeno Master - DLC Support Addon extends this to Shattered Space, although it will also serve as a hub for future Starfield expansions, too.

Frankly, this might be the coolest mod on this entire list. Who doesn't want to tame even more Starfield creatures?!

Dazra - Vacant House Furnished

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via Nizon/Nexus Mods

Can't be bothered to decorate the vacant house in Dazra for yourself? Dazra - Vacant House Furnished does the job for you, matching the player home to fit the overall Va'Ruun theme. Sometimes, you just want to kick back without worry?ing about decorating, and that's okay!

There's no denying that c??reator Nizon has create?d something super cozy here, making this a perfect home for any Spacefarer.

Rabbit's Real Lights Dazra

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via RabbitDoesStuff/Nexus Mods

Rabbit's Real Lights Dazra might be one of the best Starfield graphics mods available right now. This is a comprehensive lighting overhaul for Dazra, adding over 400 hand-placed light sources while removing Bethesda's fake ones. Unlit decals have also been r?emoved.

The overall effect is stunning, making Dazra's lighting feel much more realistic. Your brain picks up on fake lighting sources. Even if you don't know exactly what's wrong, you know something's not quite right. Rabbit's Real Lights Dazra solves this issue for this particular Starfield: Shattered Space location.

Royal Weathers - Va'Ruun'kai

Starfield: Shattered Space mods
Image via JaeDL/Nexus Mods

Royal Weathers - Va'Ruun'kai is gorgeous, adding many new weather effects to the Starfield: Shattered Space planet. ??This should make exploring it far more interesting, especially while playing through the DLC multiple times.

It also comes from JaeDL, the modder behind Royal Leveled Enemies - Shattered Space. They've clearly got an eye for detail when it comes to Starfield: Shattered Space mods.

The one thing about the original Doom and Doom 2 was they really liked to emphasize the dreary colors to match the guttural 90s viole?nce. Combined with some of the murkier, bloodier hellscape levels, id Software's iconic series is not exactly known for its liberal use of br??ight colors.

Until now, that is. As you can see, ModDB user DoomMate is currently in the midst of creating a mod for Doom 2 ??that can only be described as "neon." While it's still a work-in-progress, "Volt Laser" is promising a large selection of custom maps that have taken cues from a more synthwave/cyberpunk aesthetic.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=AmWfEZo92iw

This "megawad" will contain 35 levels, featuring a city, underground, some outskirts, and more. You can see the progress that's been made in the vid??eo above, and I, for one, am looking forward to running around maps that have purple floors and teal buttons.

Deus-Doom? System Doom?

As mentioned, "Volt Laser" is still being worked on. Its creator did say they wanted it out by November, but have had to delay releasing the mod due to other commitmen??ts. At this time, there's no definite launch day, but it should hopefully be before the end of the year.

However, DoomMate did post recently with some updates from the project, including some more images. I don't know about you, but that skyline in the distance is giving me mad original Deus Ex vibes. Or ??some other throwback piece of dystop?ian science fiction.

In any case, I'm here for it. Honestly, I'll be surprised if I ever get bored of seeing Doom mods. We've all played the games to death and I know I go on about fan-made content a lot, but i?f I had even an iota of investment and talent as a lot of modders d??o, you wouldn't be reading this article right now.

The remake of Silent Hill 2 launched yesterday and judging from the current review scores on Steam, it's going down a mighty treat. Bloober Team seems to have done the original a great service with its reimagin?ing of the iconic 2001 survival horror game. However, it's not perfect.

For example, the developer has ensured that the cutscenes in Silent Hill 2 are locked to 30 frames per second. In this modern era of gaming, this can be something of a bugbear. Fortunately, as noted by DSO Gaming, someone has alread?y fixed that. At least on the PC?? version.

Silent Hill 2: James Sunderland looks at himself in a dark mirror as he touches his cheek.
Image via RoseTheFlower/Nexusmods.

Nexusmods user RoseTheFlower has created "Cutscene Improvemen??ts," a modi??fication for the remake that unlocks the FPS during the cutscenes on PC. This means they can now be viewed in higher framerates. The mod also removes the "black bars from the cutscenes in anything other than 16:9."

Unlocking Silent Hill's full potential

According to the report from DSO, it does work pretty well, though they've only tried it on a few of the earlier cutscenes, with the writer adding that th??ey "did not spot any framepacing or speed issues." This potentially raises the question of why the developer and/or publisher made the decision to lock the scenes to just 30fps.

Such a small detail may not be a huge issue for some gamers. However, those who want more bang for their buck are willing to play something that makes the most of their hardware.? Bethesda raised similar concerns when it turned out that Starfield would be locked to 30fps on a console. At least the PC version still has it unlocked.

It seems there may not be any one reason why a modern studio would limit frame rates in this day and age, but it is far from me to speculate Bloober or Konami's rationale. In any case, if you are playing Silent Hill 2 on PC and you have a system with decent specs, "Cutscene Improvements" seems to ??be one mod that's worth trying out.

Let's face it, when playing Doom or Doom 2, the only reason to start punching enemies is that you've ??just picked up the Berserk power-up. Either that or you have a sadistic, unquenchable desire to know how long it takes to down a Cyberdemon with fisticuffs. Hint: it's probably a long time.

Anyway, if you're tired of being given the easy route with weapons, ModDB user Tortilladude has the solution. With? "Gunless" installed, ?you can strip away the need for pistols, shotguns, and rocket launchers, as this mod only allows you to use your punches to quash the demons of hell.

Doom 2: a zombie is downed by Doomguy's punching fist as though it's a pistol firing a bullet.

Making a case that guns in Doom 2 are (and I quote) "for wussies after ??all," this download replaces all weapon sp?rites with just the Doomguy's fists, which includes numerous variations on the punching animation.

Mano a Imp-o

Now, I haven't had a c?hance to check out the mod myself, but from the images on the download page, it looks like you still get projectiles. It's j?ust they're now coming from your knuckles instead of from the business end of a plasma rifle or something.

In any case, Doomguy will no longer have to worry about lugging around al?l manner of arsenal. Not when he can mow down the denizens of the underworld with naught but his mitts and a "duke it out" mentality.

Once again, we find ourselves drawn back to the allure of classic Doom. The modding community has kept us coming back for more with some pretty interesting ways of playing id Software's iconic FPS. We may be moving forward, what with Doom: The Dark Ages coming in 2025, but it'll be a cold?? day in hell before people stop playing and tinkering with the OG entries in the series.

If you're playing Starfield, there's a good chance you've experimented with mods. And if you ha?ven't already, you should, as it can add a lot to the experience.

Since launch, talented modders have added tons of new weapons to Starfield. Some are f?rom existing franc??hises, while others are totally brand-new. These are the 10 you need to add to your load order!

Plague's Optics Reimagined

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via PLAGUEW4LKER/Nexus Mods

Plague's Optics Reimagined is a full remake of almost every reflex and holographic sight in Starfield, making them much more usable in combat. Creator PLAGUEW4LKER felt that "Vanilla red dots are pretty awful in some areas," and they'v??e taken it upon themselves to fix them with tons of customization options.

The plan is for this mod to get even better, too. PLAGUEW4LKER intends to allow you to pick a specific reticle per weapon in the future, whereas right now, you've got to pick one per weapon category. Despite this current limitation, it remains one of the best Starfield weapon mods on the Nexus.

Immersive Sabers

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via somberX/Nexus Mods

Starfield Star Wars mods just feel right, and Immersive Sabers is one of the best out there. This mod adds what creator somberX calls "lasersabers" into the game, a lore-frien?dly attempt at lightsabers.

It's pretty great, to say the least, with a full perk tree and workbench upgrades for each lasersaber. If you're running a Starfield melee build, this could be th?e right weapon mod for your playthrough.

Weapons of Fate (Ballistic Overhaul)

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via Seb263/Nexus Mods

Weapons of Fate (Ballistic Overhaul) gives Starfield a little more of a hardcore shooter feel. By adding bullet drop ??and weapon tracers, it makes the game's combat feel like a real warzone, with each shot feeling much hefty thanks to the visual feedback.

Creator Seb263 boasts no performance decrease either, so you're not sacrificing anything by installing this mod. Players looking for a realistic Starfield experience must get this mod in their load order.

Craftable Weapon Skins - CWS

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via frogs345/Nexus Mods

Craftable Weapon Skins - CWS does precisely what it says on the tin, and it's a little surprising it wasn't already part of the base game. It makes all Starfield's weapon skins available for craf??ting, giving player??s more options and customization.

Who doesn't want that? Some of the best Starfield mods are abou??t making small quality-of-life changes, and Craftable Weapon Skins - CWS? fits the bill perfectly.

AK-47S (Futuristic AK)

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via sabbath7991/Nexus Mods

In terms of individual Starfield weapon mods, AK-47S (Futuristic AK) is a remarkable piece of work. Featuring a new weapon modeled from scratch, this mod brings one of the most iconic assault rifles of all time into Starfield in a l??ore-friendly way, complete with v?arious attachments to boot.

It replaces the Old Earth Assault Rifle, so it's not entire?ly new. You'll have to make t??he choice between the two if you're planning to add this to your load order.

Weapon Balance Revised

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via samuel181093/Nexus Mods

Weapon Balance Revised has one ma??in aim: "to re-balance all vanilla weapons, so every weapon is viable regardless of what level you are." It does this by making simple tweaks to weapon tiers, quality levels, accuracy, and weapon modifications to ensure you're not always looking for the next shiny new gun to use.

If the looting mechanics are a big part of your Starfield experience, this may not be the mod for you. You'll still be able to find new weapons at the same rate as before; they just might not be as significant an upgrade as they were pre??viously.

Halo AR (Tombstone Replacer)

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via SeasoningSenpai/Nexus Mods

Put a little Halo into your Starfield. Halo AR (Tombstone Replacer) adds Halo's most iconic weapon as it appears in Halo: Reach, Bungie's final e??ffort in the series. Visually, these two franchises have a lot of similarities, so it doesn't look out of place at all here, even if i?t's not 100% lore-friendly.

Using this mod will replace the Tombstone rifle, but let's be honest: Halo's assault rifle is legendary for a reason.

Project Warfare - Hardened Edition

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via 510deshawn/Nexus Mods

If you're here for lore-friendly Starfield mods, you can skip Project Warfare - Hardened Edition. If you don't care either way, it's one of the best weapon mods out there right now. It adds eight weapons from Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered, all of which instantly become some of the most detailed and visually interesting models in Starfield.

Creator 510de?shawn has done a great job picking the right weapons for this mod. Again, they're not technically lore-friendly, ??but they all look right at home here.

Laser Replacements and Remove Laser

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via sabbath7991/Nexus Mods

Is the default red laser not good enough for you in Starfield? Maybe you don't want them at all? Laser Replacements and Remove Laser has you covered. You can swap ?out the game's red laser with various different colors, or remove them completely with this mod.

It's not the most enormous Starfield w?eapon mod by any stretch of the imagination, but anything that gives you more choices is a great addition in my book.

Avontech Munitions

best Starfield weapon mods
Image via kaosnyrb/Nexus Mods

Last but not least, there's Avontech Munitions. This great mod by kaosnyrb adds three entirely new weapons named Tiberius, Janus, and Nitrophaser, each with their own unique strengths and weaknesses. They've got a striking look, unlike anything else you'll find in vanilla Starfield.

Using another mod titled Real Time Form Patcher, you can even give the Avontech Munitions weapons out to NPCs in the world, making them feel like an integrated part of Starfield's vast galaxy.

A few days ago, Sony let God of War Ragnarök run free on Steam, nearly two years after its debut on PlayStation 5. However, there's been a bit of contention regarding the publisher's insistence tha??t players need a PS??N account, even if they don't have the console version. Or even the console itself.

Still, trust the modding community to come to the rescue. As spotted by DSO Gaming, Nexus Mods user iArtorias released an unofficial tool for the game that allows PC users to boot up Ragnarök without having to sign up for a PlayStation Networ??k accou?nt.

//twitter.com/SonySantaMonica/status/1837180773780029897

The modder says the download is a "tiny library that fully strips the PlayStation PC SDK runtime requirement," after some players encountered problems with the port of the g?ame. They do make it clear that the mod is not intended to encourage piracy, nor does it "touch or modify any original game code."

A quick look at the mod's history demonstrates that it may not be a guaranteed fix for everyone, or at least not a permanent one. A few comments raise issues around sudden curveballs to nav??igate from Sony, like getting stuck on account linking threads, but iArtoriasUA has since patched the issue. Regardless, as future patches roll out, it's worth noting Sony may introduce or change requirements that could result in modded PC copies getting locked out.

Sony strikes again with its PSN demands

At the time of writing, God of War Ragnarök has a Steam review score of "??mixed." Indeed, while a lot of people seem pleased with the game, there have been a few comments regarding Sony's PSN account requirement.

This is also not the first time Sony has come under fire for this tactic. Earlier this year, it was announced that those who wanted to play Helldivers 2 on PC would also need to connect up a PlayStation Network account. There was quite the backlash from the community, and Sony eventually backpedaled on the idea.

As for God of War Ragnarök, developer Santa Monica recently published Patch 2, with the update intending to fix some issues with Nvidia Frame Generation and Reflex, as well as tweaks to the UI. You can see the full patch notes here. The developer also recently announced that Ragnarök has been verified on Steam Deck.

Whether Sony will change its mind about PC players having to link to PSN remains to be seen at this stage, but we saw what happened with Helldivers 2. For now, you may have to use iArtorias' mod.

According to scientific theories, such as those in Popular Mechanics, it's estimated that the last particle in the known universe will decay after 10²â°â° years (a long time, basically). However, I reckon people will still be modding Skyrim. You just can't stop the unbri??dled tenacity of gamers.

Here's one more for all you hip cats to add to your TES5 loadout. Remember when ninjas were all the rage in pop culture? Well, Nexus Mods user Q10isarobot is bringing them to Skyrim. Replacing the rebellious ???Forsworn, these NPCs now know kung fu. Or something like that.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbWFdtJlq3M

This mod changes all the Forsworn outfits for the more traditional ninja getup. This also includes giving them weapons worthy of any stealth warrior. Check them out in the video above, although it's pretty cle??ar the player is more than capable of dispatching them. Look at all that blood!

Nin-ja or Nin-nein?

The reason why the Forsworn have been replaced with ninjas is, according to Q10isarobot, because they "fight kinda like ninjas and hang out in clans so I think it fits well in the game." Makes sense, though they do admit they're not a lore expert when it comes to Skyrim.

This also looks like a good mod for anyone who doesn't want to interrupt their current save file. The creator says it just replaces the mesh, so it's "s??afe to install or uninstall," and also doesn't require an ESP file for expanding scripting.

Right. Okay. We've played and modded The Elder Scrolls 5 for quite a?? long time now. When's the sixth game coming out? No, I will not stop harping on about this.

If there's one thing you can say about Doom, it's that it's never boring. Sure, you've clocked the classic games more times than you've eaten soup, but the vanilla experiences are just the beginning. Modding is? where it's at?, yo.

Look, you know how this works. I tell you about a Doom mod and you all go and check it out. This one is not quite like the others, though. It has colors, for starters. Spaceverse: Bunny Maze from ModDB user SmilingFaceMedia off??ers something a little different to just a graphics tweak or some modern innovations.

Doom: a teak world that shows bunny-type women and the player pointing a gun at them.
Image via SmilingFaceMedia/ModDB.

It's a rather bright (red: very teal) FPS that has you playing as a "virtual man" who's stuck in a vir?tual maze, full of habitants known as "Lunar Bunnies." That sounds fun, until it beco?mes apparent that these humanoid bunnies are out to kill you.

Always with the killing

As the creator says, there's more to Spaceverse than just shooting and surviving. You also have to use your intellectual moxie to navigate the maze. Oh de??ar, thinks? I.

The mod has been built for GZDoom, specifically, and does come with a warning. I'll let SmilingFaceMedia fiel??d this one:

Spaceverse: Bunny Maze contains imagery, flashing colours, and other content that may upset some players. If you happen to be epileptic or easily offended, then we discourage you from playing this gamefor your own good. Spaceverse: Bunny Maze is also NOT ?compatible for mobile as it is only intended to play on PC.

Probably best to make that mes?sage loud and clear.

As we move ever closer to the release of Doom: The Dark Ages this time a medieval-themed entry in the iconic series we should ne?ver forget where Doomguy came from. Yes, even if he's been turned into a virtual man who has to fight bunny girls.

We've seen it all from the Skyrim community. We've had everything from new quests, better visuals, bug fixes, and that one mod that turns the Giant Spiders into a creepy looking Spider-Man, complete with gangly limbs. But maybe it's time we had something more scatological in our TES5 experience. Or so one person felt, at least.

In what can only be described as something of a head-scratching moment, Nexus Mods user nakano52 decided to replace Skyrim's vegetation with literal poo. Referred to as DIY (or Doo Ingredients Yuk), this mod is potentially suited for those who often find thems??elves thinking, "there's not enough shit on my travels" while adventuring?? across Tamriel.

Skyrim: giant piles of poop on some dry land near buildings in the city of Whiterun.
Image via nakano52/Nexus Mods.

Specifically, nakano52 says the mod replaces shrubs ?and plants "at a certain rate," whatever that means. However, it's not just for the aesthetic grossness of it, though the modder admits they thought it would be fun to see vast piles of poop in the game.

Not quite healing powers

You see, Doo Ingredients Yuk does have something of a purpose. As noted in the name, the piles of plants-cum-feces can actually be harvested for those who consider themselves quite t??he budding alchemist.

What can it be used for in this context? Why,?? nothing more than a simple poison, of course. According to the description page, poop has a gold value of one, a weight capacity of 0.1, and has the following effects:

  • Ravage Health
  • Lingering Damage Health
  • Lingering Damage Magicka
  • Lingering Damage Stamina

There are, however, a few additional mods you'll need to download and install before this one will work, such as SkyPatcher and Base Object Swapper. Other than that, you're good to go, because we've all run out of things to do in Skyrim, it seems. Not that I'm above a poop-?based modification, you understand.

With Year 2 DLC on the horizon and the Shattered Space expansion pack almost upon us, Starfield is getting a bevy of official content. The uno??fficial goodies - mods - are where it's really at, though, and the WIP Dune - Project Arrakis mod is a prime example of why that's the case.

Produced by modder Questionthis, Dune - Project Arrakis is precisely what it says on the tin, and then some. It's a comprehensive planet replacer mod that attempts to overhaul the backwater world of McClure III into glorious Arrakis from the mind of Paul Herbert and Dune. This means Spice, Sandworms, sietches, Fremen factions, and lots more. As this is a one-person job, though, it's going to take a long while before Questionthis makes good on their ambition. The good news is that the bits that are currently there are extremely promising in their own right.

Image via Questionthis

Starfield's getting a Dune/Arrakis mod that replaces a whole planet

Questionthis has a very long road ahead of them, though I will say that they're on the right track from my point of view. You can - and should - check out Dune - ??Project Arrakis on Nexu??s Mods right now, where you'll be beset by a series of surprisingly atmospheric screenshots. Some of them even include? the ?embodiment of Shai-Hulud, the sandworms themselves, and they are absolutely horrific.

I will say that the filter-feeding version of the creature ?from Villeneuve's recent silver screen adaptations makes more biological sense than the multi-jawed super-predator monstrosity created by Questionthis. Yet, it's hard to argue against the modded variant's sheer awesomeness ??and creepiness, so I'm quite happy with how Questionthis's work has been turning out.

And, really, they're thoroughly dedicated to this mod: "This is more than a planet conversion mod," they say. "It's a comprehensive and hand-crafted overhaul of McClure III to bring the world of Frank Herbert's Dune to Starfield."

Comprehensive indeed!?? Here's the planned feature list:

  • Hand-crafted POIs and settlements.
  • Player homes.
  • New mineable materials (e.g. Spice Melange).
  • New creatures, factions, NPCs, and even abilities.
  • New quests

As of update 1.4 for Dune - ?Project Arrakis, you can already plop down Spice Extractors to harvest Melange on Arrakis, enjoy your very own customizable sietch, and even find mini-worms out and about. Plenty more to come, of course, but Questionthis's work is already plenty impressive in my book.

With that all out of the way, where's that DOOM questline mod we saw almost a month ago?? The expectation was that it would be released?? sometime around the admittedly awesome REV-8 vehicle update late in August, but it's nowhere to be seen so far. Stay tuned!

The STALKER series has a long, complicated, and extremely storied history of development. From the earliest days of Oblivion Lost all the way to the release of the open-source port of GSC Game World's X-Ray engine, it's quite fascinating. How likely, though, is it that STALKER 2 tops all that?

Here's the thing about STALKER 2: the odds of it truly substituting and improving upon every single aspect of its predecessors are remarkably slim. I've said before that, following the latest developer deep dive, I'm way more keen on the state o?f the game than ??ever before. The developer, GSC Game World, is obviously doing its best to replicate the immaculate vibes of the old STALKER titles in every possible way, but I just d??on't see it ha??????????????????????????ppening across the board, and modding is one of the reasons why I feel this way.

Now, obviously, this article may well prove to be incorrect within a couple of years: STALKER 2 may well be the title that will kickstart full-fledged Unreal Engine 5 modding in an unprecedented way. You're going to want to keep a pinch of salt at hand as you read, is what I'm getting at. Yet, having been at the ground zero of each and every one of STALKER's PC releases,?? I can't help but be skep??tical of UE's ability to host this franchise's burgeoning modding community. Down below, I'll explain why that's the case.

Image via GSC Game World

STALKER 2 replaces X-Ray with Unreal Engine 5, but is it for the better?

Obviously, this header is a bit of a stinker when you think about it, because good grief was X-Ray an absolute mess in its Shadow of Chernobyl build. Yet, as years went by and OpenXRay came into its own, the community ended up fixing and improving upon every single aspect of the old, original STALKER t??itles while developing a new standalone experience along the way.

This materialized in the form of Call of Chernobyl - a free single-player mod that unifies all the content from Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, and Call of Pripyat into one A-Life simulating super-sandbox. It is phenomenal, and if you haven't yet given it a chance, I highly recommend doing so. Avoid the usual assortment of Anomaly and GAMMA modpacks that players often recommend, too: just give STALKER a chance for its ecology to start popping off. Now, had STALKER always relied on third-party engines, this wouldn't have been possible, and I firmly believe that, in turn, we wouldn't be so vigorously discussing the merits of a full-featured STALKER 2 to begin with.

Don't get me wrong: Unreal Engine 5 is obviously going to be a huge improvement to the core stability and feature-set of STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl. Its tech-stack is so massive that GSC Game World didn't have to spend time producing their own custom engine that would, inevitably, come apart at the seams if X-Ray is anything to go by. Yet, in moving over to a mainstream third-party solution, GSC Game World is without a doubt losing something that's been absolutely crucial to STALKER: modding capacity.

Image via GSC Game World

The STALKER modding community is almost guaranteed to suffer

Certainly, there are moddable Unreal Engine 5 games. The engine lends itself to third-party customization way better than its immediate predecessor, but it'?s still not even close to the flexibilit?y of Unreal Engine 3. UE3, in turn, was a pale shadow of some other game engines when it comes to modding, and X-Ray is one of them.

It's crucial to understand that STALKER games have had prolific modding communities basically from day one onwards. True, we didn't get to enjoy the golden age of Call of Chernobyl until after the release of OpenXRay in 2020, but that's beside the point: deep modding is a crucial implement for a STALKER game. It's a pillar of the franchise's community, and I sadly do not think this will continue with STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl.

Here's the jig: it all has to do with Unreal Engine 5 and how moddable it is or is not. Now, obviously, all of this depends entirely on the developer, a game's community, and whether or not they end up releasing the mod-kit/SDK for a game in the end. Some UE5 games are moddable, to an extent. Take Ready or Not, for example, which has map mods, gun mods, AI mods, and a variety of ot?her thingamabobs players can install throu?gh the integrated modding UI.

Thing is, though, that virtually everyone recommends manually installing mods regardless, because the in-game UI is simply unreliable and doesn't work properly half the time. I can vouch for this, too: the mods will not reliably load in Ready or Not if you don't put in some elbow grease.

Technically, the possibility of modding is on the table for STALKER 2 and, certainly, GSC Game World has promised to support it, as per the official website. Given UE5's track record, though, I just don't think the game's modding community will ever reach the ridiculous heights of its predecessors. Predecessors which, note, did not come with SDKs of any sort, only for modders themselves to reverse-engineer the??m into being.

STALKER 2 will continue the franchise's legacy, but jankiness and free-form modding may be a thing of the past

I fear that this article's tone may suggest that I'm somehow skeptical of STALKER 2 in general. Not at all, though: not after the latest batch?? of gameplay trailers and showpieces. Heck, I was absolutely thrilled when Scar of Clear Sky fame made a triumphant (and surprisingly jolly) appearance in his own dedicated trailer.

No, I genuinely believe that STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl will deliver a true STALKER gaming experience that meaningfully riffs on what came before it. I just don't think the game's new tech-stack is going to allow the modding community to spread its wings quite as much as it did with Call of Chernobyl.

Gun skins, armors, and perhaps even some new content? I'm sure it'll drop in, sooner or later. Something resembling a full-scale retrofit such as GAMMA, though? No shot. At least not from what we've seen of Unreal Engine 5 so far. And, really, it's hard to argue that this hypothetical scenario wouldn't be a marked loss for the STALKER community.

For the time being, let's wait and see what comes of all this. Even if STALKER 2 does manage to find its footing as a proper modding platform, it'll take years before we know how far modders can take it. In the interim, we just gotta hope that GSC Game World can d??eliver the base gameplay experience we're all hoping to see.

Doom is just one of those games that feels like it's always been there. Indeed, some of you reading this weren't even born when id Software dropped its now legendary FPS onto our collective faces. It's still hanging around today, and one of those reasons is because people keep modding the OG?? releases.

Some of these people are figurative monsters, however. If you've played the older Doom games on Nightmare difficulty, you know what a challenge it can be. Well, ModDB user immistyer decided that wasn't enough, so has given us a new "Impossible" s??kill to select.

Doom: the player holds a BGF weapon as enemies attack from down a corridor.
Image via immistyer/ModDB.

One of the key things that makes the original Nightmare mode so hard is the fact that enemies keep respawning, so you can never truly get rid of them. Kind of like flies in the summer; they j??ust always seem to be around!

A buzzin' nuisance

However, with this impossible skill level, the ante has been upped by making it so the monster respawn time has been halved. They come back twice as fast this time round. Here's everything immistyer's mod (which is currently available in Early Access) does for the original Doom:

  • Increases monster "Aggressiveness" to 0.95 (ZDoom default is just 0).
  • Makes it so you only get 75% ammo without a backpack, and also so that you only get 1.5x ammo with a backpack.
  • Increases ALL damage by 2x.
  • Increases monster health by 2.5x.
  • Makes it so you only get 0.65% of the armor and health.
  • Makes ALL knockback 2.5x stronger.
  • Replaces all medkits with stimpacks.
  • Enables fast monsters.
  • Disables infighting!!!
  • Makes monsters respawn twice as fast as in Nightmare!!!
  • Sets the spawn preset difficulty to "Hard"

Note that even monster infighting has been disabled. Now all the helli?sh creatures have nothing to focus on except the most efficient?? way to turn your meaty body into a fine paste.

I haven't tried the mod myself, but I bet it's a doozy. I've only ever really dabbled with the game's official Nightmare difficulty a few times over the years, so a s??etting that labels itself as "Impossible" does not sound like a particularly chill time for me.

Of course, as well as tinkering with the classics, Doom, as a series, keeps moving forward. We already had the 2016 reboot and the equally well-received Eternal. Now we're getting a new one: Doom: The Dark Ages, which takes us back to a medieval period. I don't particularly care where we go, so long as the killing?? is brutal and t??he monsters' insides go well with the décor.

Sure, surviving the frosty tundra of a frozen Earth is rough enough, but what if you add dinosaurs to the mix? Well, that may just be an option when the post-apocalyptic sequel Frostpunk 2 launches in September. Developer 11 bit studios teased mod support for the survival city-builder via Twitter earlier today wi?th ??a brief video clip.

//twitter.com/frostpunkgame/status/1828063904729096331

Mod support would be pretty chill-y

Throughout the video we see a variety of, let's just say, not normal Frostpunk entities including a T-Rex, a dragon, the massive circular roaming base from 11 bit studios' other upcoming title, The Alters, as well as an army of adorable pink creatures from their recently released Creatures of Ava.

Frostpunk 2 already looks to b?e a quality sequel to the original, putting players in the role of building a prosperous settlement in the Arctic wastes, managing the various factions that reside inside instead of focusing purely on surviving. But the official mod support always has the potential to add a ton of new content as well, once players are able to learn how the modding works and start pushing what can be done with it.

The video teased that we will learn more in just a couple of days on August 28. Popular mod solution mod.io also commented on the tweet asking, "What could it be?👀". With more recent titles adding mod.io support, it's quite possible that's the route that 11 bit studios have taken with integrating mod support into Frostpunk 2. But as the video says, we will find out more on Augus?t 28.

I already have a ton of ideas of what types of mods I'd love to see in Frostpunk 2, but dinosaurs and dragons aren't a bad start. Frostpunk 2 is set to release on Sep?tember 20, 2024, on P??C via Steam, Epic Game Store, and GOG as well as on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. It will also be a Day One on Game Pass release.

One of the key things about Skyrim indeed, about thousands of games is getting to live out the life of?? a capable hero. All that questing sure goes a long way to maxing out your skills while you expl??ore vast worlds. But what if hear me out someone else could do it for you?

Say hello to Skyrim Outbound Shipments by user Eudalus, a mod for TES5 that allows you to employ the help of a, shall we say, lesser person to carry out certain duties. Namely, by finishing quests for a small fee. After all, the Dragonborn has more important thing??s to be getting on with. Rom?ancing Lydia, for example.

Skyrim: a courier in Whiterun is asked to deliver the Golden Claw to Lucan Valerius.

Why carry that important item all the way back to whoever sen?t you out for it when you can pay a courier to do it in your stead? What this mod does, essentially, is let you hire an NPC to "progress or complete quests by delivering quest items or messages for you."

You'll still reap the benefits

Of course, you'll still get the rewards ??and possibly the kudos as well. According to the mod's description, any monetary remuneration you're owed for the quest will be delivered to you by the courier within six to 36 hours.

There are a couple of price tiers, though, depending on what you want the hired help to achieve. Eudalus says most jobs will fall under "normal delivery," which costs 10 gold coi?ns by default. For more complex quests, you'll pay "hazard delivery," which is three ti??mes the normal rate, but does include hiring the courier to trek dangerous territory, such as Castle Volkihar.

The mo??d is still being worked on, so there may be a few issues with compatibility when it comes to others that you may have installed. Also, not all the quests are supported, such as ones that reward skill points, but it looks like Eudalus is going to keep working on it.

To quote the modern day poet that is one Marshall "Eminem" Mathers: Hi kids! Do you like violence? To add onto that, do you especially like Skyrim violence? While TES5 has its brutal moments, it evidently wasn't enough for one per??son who felt the aging RPG needed just a soupçon of additional gore.

Hacking and slashing is the name of the game with "Dismembering Framwork," created by Nexus Mods user Seb263. If you're tired of striking at foes with all your might only for them to just get ?knocked back and maybe bleed a little, this one's for you.

//youtu.be/VSKBiIw9Pos

You see??, this mod adds in "real time dismemberment," as well as "realistic blood? splatters." It's even said to have "adaptive sound effects based on armor and weapon types" for when you really want to hear your sword connect with your opponent.

Become Skyrim's own freelance butcher

The above video is but a dangling hunk of tasty meat to really entice you in. Now, we all know the vanilla version of Skyrim already has a decapitation feature. However, it's reserved for a kind of finishing move, whereas with "Dismemberi?ng Framework," it all happens in real-time.

Note the ability to remove limbs with a swing of a sharp weapon. Any Khajiits giving you trouble? Simply lop off their tail and watch them dance around in agony, blood spewing fr??om the wound. Dance. Dance in an aquifer of your enemy's ichor!

Got a bit carried away there. Anyway, yes. As I was saying: Skyrim needs more violence. I honestly never realized how much I wanted the ability to sever off limbs when out and about in Tamriel. You really get to find out about yourself when you play ga??mes, yeah?

Considered to be the greatest Fallout game ever made, Fallout: New Vegas is simply screaming out for a follow-up from Obsidian Entertainment. Sadly, nearly 14 years later and we still haven't had a new Fallout from the Avowed studio. Oh well, at least we still have plenty o??f mods to ??keep us amused.

And amused I am, thanks to this one from Nexus Mods user SadWeeble in which NPCs in New Vegas literally explode randoml??y. The game itself is already known for its dark humor and elements of the slightly absurd, so this ??should basically fit right into your normal playthrough.

Fallout New Vegas: an NPC flips into the air with no legs as they explode.

SadWeeble describes it a????s turning the wasteland into the "tensest game of Hot Potato." Imagine just strolling through the Vegas Strip or the Mojave Desert itself, only to see the denizens and Wastelanders flip and ragdoll via an explosion that leaves very little time to say goodbye to personal limbs.

Customizable booms

It gets better, as well. The mod creator has also added in some custom settings to allow you to configure the randomness of NPCs exploding. You can, for example, change the delay before said NPC goes all boom. You can change the explosion "type," reward yourself some XP each time someone explo??des, and mark essential characters as ones to ignore.

The only downside perhaps is you do need a few more downloads for this one to work. SadWeeble says in order to get "NPCs Randomly Explode" to work, y?ou'll need the following:

I recently replayed Fallout: New Vegas, having not picked it up for a few years. One thing people typically praise the game for is its story and writing. It has a certain levity to it that offsets the somewhat bleak aspects of living in a post-apocalyptic world, something that Bethesda can't quite measure up to. I know I'm definitely not alone in hoping Obsidian will give us a New Vegas 2 at some point.

The legacy of Skyrim is such that it feels as though there will never be a time when it's not in the gaming limelight. I'm partly to blame for that, given all the articles I do about fan-made mods. But what can I say? The community does a lot of work to keep TES5's head above the water, improving on Bethesd??a's original release. Oh hell, let's talk about one more.

This one comes from Nexus Mods user Enneal (as spotted by DSO Gaming), and is for those who like a little sea travel with their (specifically Special Edition of) Skyrim. The "Functional Ships" d??ownload essentially adds point-to-point travel between t?he game's ports via the use of ships.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OkjgjyzLFw

The video a?bove gives a brief idea of what you can expect, with the mod even allowi?ng you to explore the inside of your vessel as it sails across the water. Enneal says it adds six new ships, though apparently not all of them include interiors.

Skyrim by sea..."Searim"

It seems as though "Functional Ships" is best paired with other custom additions to the game, so it's unlikely that it will work with the basic, vanilla version of the game. Still, if you've been playing The Elder Scrolls 5 for the last 12 years, chances are your version is modded to Oblivion (little TES humor there) already.

As for features, here'??s what Enneal's offering comes with:

  • Point-to-point travel
  • Ships reflect quest progress & world events
  • Accessible interiors from moving ships
  • Real-time(-ish) travel while inside ships
  • Ships travel between all ports on the Sea of Ghosts, including Raven Rock

Maybe one day I'll stop talking about Skyrim mods. Today is clearly not ??that day. Onwar??ds we go!

These days, it's all Skyrim Skyrim Skyrim. A fine game it is, obviously, but sometimes it's good to look back at some of the older entries. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion was a landmark entry in the long-running series, being one of the best RPG??s of its era. To that end, I'm?? pleased that people are still finding the time to give it some love.

As noted by DSO Gaming, a fan-made mod will boost your TES4 experience by quite the margin. Uploaded by Nexus Mods user Vorians (and created by Lariatius), Citadel of Madness is a pret??ty hefty download, adding a ton of new? content.

Oblivion: a grim image from the Citadel of Madness mod, showing people being hanged by a stone building.
Image via Vorians/Nexus Mods.

According to the description, it adds the followi?ng:

  • A new quest line, comparable in duration to any Cyrodiil guild. 38 new quests (23 in the main line, 15 side quests).
  • A huge fortress on a floating island.
  • Hundreds of new characters.
  • More than 3000 lines of dialogue.
  • Over 25 hours of play.
  • Powerful bosses and new opponents. The Knights of Order among them are far from the strongest.
  • New game territories: the Archipelago of Madness, the lands of Jyggalag and one more (you’ll see for yourself later).
  • On the Archipelago of Madness there are three small but well-developed islands and, accordingly, three new settlements: a city, a village and a fishing village.
  • Lots of new drinks and alchemical ingredients.
  • A new gaming faction with its own career ladder, several non-playable and hostile factions.
  • Many well-developed locations: more than 180 new internal cells (interiors).
  • New types of caves and crypts.
  • New magical artifacts and familiar old ones.
  • New in-game literature, as well as books from other parts of TES.
  • New music and sounds.
  • New weapons and armor.

It even incorporates the lore from the Shivering Isles DLC.

Oblivion will never die

Okay, I should probably point out at this point that this isn't technically a new mod. According to Vorians, this is actually an English translation of a Russian fan project. I found what I believe to be the original download, which was uploaded quite some time ago. Sti??ll, it being a translated version re-uploaded to Nexus Mods techn??ically makes it new, right?

For all its flaws, Oblivion was a banger. I say flaws in the way that most Bethesda games come prepackaged with their share of bugs and errors. TES4 was pr????obably one of the less egregious examples, but even so, it's aged.

However, it continues to hold a special place in the hearts of many, typically ranking high on lists of the best Elder Scrolls games ever (Morrowind usually takes the top spot). Modders continue to deliver the goods to keep us going back for more, so Oblivion's legacy c?an continue unabated. Is that too much of a kiss-ass s??entiment? I don't care. I love this game.
