It’s fair to say that there are a lot of different versions of Monopoly on the market, and there are even previous iterations with a Pokémon twist. Now there’s a new version joining the fray, and it’s as close to a full-on Pokémon board game as we’re likely to get. 

Pre-orders for Pokémon Monopoly are open now through Hasbro Pulse, and it won’t break the bank either. The game retails for $24.99 USD, so it’s a solid choice for a Christmas gift if there’s a Pokémon fan in your life. It's set to begin shipping on D??ecember 20, so there's even a chance you might ??get it before the big day.

If you’re a Monopoly naysayer, try not to let the title put you off. You could pretty much remove the �em>Monopoly�part and this board game would work on a standalone level, mostly because it has ditched most of the typical Monopoly gameplay in lieu of more Pokémon-esque tasks.

Okay, so there’s still ??a jail and free parking, which doesn’t necessarily fit the vibe and I’m not sure how they’re going to work exactly, but other than that there’s a whole othe?r way to play. Instead of traveling around the board to buy properties and ripping off your tenants, this version has you exploring locations and capturing Pokémon.

The aim of the game, and what will eventually make you the winner, is capturing eight Pokémon. ??You’ll need to get one of each of the following types:

• Grass
• Fire
• Water
• Fighting
• Psychic
• Rock
• Electric
• Ice

There are 48 Pokémon available to capture in total, which spawn in designate??d locations around the board. Exploring these locations is done by obtaining Adventure or Challenge cards, which can also allow you to steal Pokémon from other players, take over their obtained locations, and more.

You may have noticed that among the listed Pokémon, one certain yellow electric mouse is missing. Well, the good news is that you can actu??ally play as Pikachu, as it’s one of the player pieces. The bad news is that there’s likely to be some arguments over who gets to play as the OG cutie pie, but it’s not as if the other choices aren’t great as well. Generation 9 starters take center stage.

There’s no money, with replacement Pokéballs filling the gap. There are even battle en?counters that can take place if you land on a location t?hat’s controlled by another player. You can fight to knock out their Pokémon, and if you win, you gain control of the location and have a chance to catch more Pokémon.

The evenings are getting darker, the thick sweaters are being pulled fr??om the back of the c??loset where they’ve been hiding all summer, and spooky season has officially begun. With Halloween in mind, here are some great board games to get in the spirit of things.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year (in my opinion), and there’s nothing better than cozying up next to a crackling fire and whipping out a board game or two. I’ve got a cupboard full of them, including the ultra-spooky Ouija Board. If you’re too easily creeped out to give that a try, here are my 10 favori??te, loosely Halloween-themed choices. 

Stupid Deaths

If you’ve ever witnessed the joy that is Horrible Histories, you’ll know what to expect from the Stupid Deaths board game in?spired by a specific segment of the show. Each player takes turns to read out a Stupid Death Card, and the rest have to decide whether it’s actually a way in which someone died or not. Did I mention that the Grim Reaper is chasing you to give you your own Stupid Death? 

Horrified

As a player in Horrified, it’s your job to protect the village from the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monst?er, The Mummy, and other suitably creepy Monsters. Each Monster has challenges that must be overcome as a group, with the fight taking place in locations such as the Lab?oratory, Institute, or Church. 

Cadaver

Cadaver is a card-based game in which players duke it out to reanimate as many corpses as they can. Up to three players can play with a single deck, and each player has to gather as many arcane resources, coffin locks, and terrifying ghouls as they can. It’s a really quick ?game to play, and the illustrations on the cards are really pretty to look at, if not a little creepy. 

The Night Cage

The Night Cage is different every time you play, thanks to the mechanic of area tiles, which can be put down in any combination. As a player, it’s your job to escape the ever-changing ma??ze with nothing but the light from candles to illuminate the way. You’ll need to work together if you’re going to get out and try not to double back on yourse??lf.

Hocus Pocus

Another card-based game, but this time, there?’s a cauldron and Binx the cat involved. You’ll need to work together in Hocus Pocus to try and stun the Sanderson Sisters three times, but it’s not as simple as it sounds. You’ve got objectives to meet, and each sister has her own special rule??s because, of course, they do. The Sanderson Sisters are nothing if they’re not awkward.

Monopoly: Ghostbusters Edition

If you’ve played any of the hundreds of versions of Monopoly, you pretty much know what you’re doing in the Ghostbusters Edition. It gets a place on this list for simply being Ghostbusters-themed, and rather than Chance and Community Chest cards, you have Roaming Vapor and Ghost Trap cards, both ??of which sit atop a replica Ghost Trap that plays Ray Parker Junior at the touch of a button. Perfection. 

Jumanji

Although not necessarily the first thing you think about when it comes to Halloween, Jumanji honestly terrified me as a child and put me off playing any board games for years, lest I end up getting ?sucked into them. Plus, what’s scarier than a bunch of giant bugs and rampaging creatures coming out of a game to tear your world apart? 

Mysterium

Mysterium?? is essentially a cooperative murder mystery in which most of the players are Mediums, while one of them is the ghost of the murder victim. The Ghost can provide Mediums with vision??s, helping them to guess the suspect, location, and murder weapon. Imagine Clue but with a spooky twist. There’s also a bunch of expansions available.

Psycho Killer

Psycho Killer is a card based game in which players take turns to draw a card from the top of the deck. These cards can give you useful perks, equip you with ??weapons, or, at worst, be a Psycho Killer. If you pull a Psycho Killer card, everyone in the group needs to use the cards in their hand to get away with their lives. 

Jumping Spiders

If you want a?? family-friendly fun game to play this Halloween, then Jumping Spiders is an excellent choice, and it’s ?really simple. If any adults reading this have ever played tiddlywinks, then you’re going to master this real fast. There’s a web set up between two trees, and you take it in turns to push down on spiders until they fly forward and, hopefully, attach themselves to the web.

Monopoly is a board game that, in a horrific and ironic twist, has dominated the minds of the people. So much so that over 1,500 editions of the game exist. If you're going to play Monopoly, at least make sure it's one of the better e?ditions available.

Please note that I'll be going over more obscure and interesting variations of Monopoly, as the last thing you'll want if you're bored of classic Monopoly is classic Monopoly but with a differe?nt coat of paint. If you're after something more faithful, then search up "Monopoly" and your current favorite franchise in Google. I'm sure they've got something.

Monopoly City

Starting off strong, Monopoly City is a much more "gamified" edition of Monopoly, as the center of the board has been refurbished into different grids. When p??layers land on a space, they c??an build a variety of different buildings on the respective area of land in the middle of the board.

As the game progresses, players will be building up residential houses, factories, and even special projects like stadiums. Upon owning a monopoly, a player can then build ??skyscrapers and even towers. Hazard buildings can? also crop up, which makes all residential buildings in that area redundant.

Monopoly City allows players to tangibly see their progress and build much more ??exciting buildings, adding real strategy to an otherwise largely luck-based game.

Monopoly Hotels

I know Monopoly Hotels doesn't use a board, but out of all the stranger and divorced Monopoly board games, I thought this one was pretty good.

In Monopoly Hotels, players will try to be the first to construct a five-story Hotel with rooms in each (without any bill cards, either). It costs to build new floors,?? although the rest of the game, such as sabotaging your opponent and adding rooms and celebrities to your Hotel, are?? done purely from a deck of cards.

A faster-paced and more interesting way to enjoy Monopoly, Monopoly Hotels takes the core principles of Monopoly and turns it ?into a card game with psychological warfare and you both try to bluff each other about?? the values of the rooms of your Hotels. Wonderful stuff.

Monopoly Gamer

Monopoly Gamer, to my initial surprise, is so much more than a reskin, although it's less of a "gamer" edition and simply is a Super Mario edition, which may be a shame to some.

In Monopoly Gamer, the game will only last around eight rounds, as every time someone passes "Go!" a boss will be brought into play. They'll get tougher as the game goes on, and upon defeating a boss, rewards are given. Coins are ??used instead of cash, which can be dropped onto the board for various reasons.

Each character in Monopoly Gamer has a different ability, and the winner is the player with the most points, which are accumulated from buying properties and defeating bosses, meaning a p??layer's coin count is meaningless when it comes ??to deciding a victor.

Monopoly Longest Game Ever

Hilariously, Monopoly Longest Game Ever really leans into the franchise's reputation. Although the base game is likely the worst Monopoly game ever con??ceived, I can't help but find it incredibly amusing.

This edition of Monopoly comes with a board with double the spaces and only one dice. The only way to win Monopoly Longest Game Ever is by owning absolutely eve?rything on the board. Better yet, players can forcibly purchase other players' properties by paying merely $10 more than the base price.

I feel like Monopoly Longest Game Ever is perfect for a one-off night of torture for you and your friends. Better yet, you can make it into a drinking game or have other silly challenges associated to it to turn it from a genuine slog into an experience so nightmar??ish and grueling it becomes hilarious with the right people.

Monopoly The Lord Of The Rings

Monopoly The Lord Of The Rings, like all good Lord of the Rings games, has the One Ring and some sort of tracker that leads to Mount Doom. As players go around the board acquiring properties and engaging in classic 21st century capitalism, they'l??l also be ??escorting the ring.

?The One Ring will be held by a player a??t all times, offering advantages. However, the dice now has a Sauron side. Every turn that player doesn't roll the Sauron side, the Sauron tracker increases. Upon finally rolling the Sauron side, that player will need to pay money equal to the value of the space the Sauron tracker is on.

However, should the Sauron tracker reach the end (when a?? player manages to hold the One Ring for six consecutive turns), the game ends and a winner is decided. The pieces, especially the ring, are of great quality and?? games are less likely to drag on for too long thanks to the ring mechanic.

Monopoly Star Wars

Monopoly Star Wars is the only team-based Monopoly on this? list, and does a great job at having a winning side? and an "ultimate winner."

Firstly, t??he board is spherical, which is very cool. Instead of placing houses and hotels, players will instead be building a base, and will place a token of their side on the planet. The moment all the planets have a base, the game ends and the side with the most bases wins. It's that simple.

To make the game even more interesting, if you owe another player in Monopoly Star Wars, they'll take over your most valuable base. Bounty Hunter spaces can also be used to repossess enemy bases, making this edition a much quicker, yet much more strategic and tense, game of Monopoly.

Monopoly Gamer Overwatch

Unbelievably, Monopoly Gamer Overwatch is a very interesting edition of Monopoly where combat takes center stage. Players will construct teams of three Overwatch characters?? to take to the board to gain points?? and defeat opponents.

Using a smaller board, players will duke it ou?t to claim objectives (the spaces) for points whilst dealing damage to other player??s. In place of money, players now have "HP." Throughout the game, loot boxes will be dealt to players, and when the last loot box is dealt, the game will end.

With each character having their own abilities, Monopoly Gamer Overwatch allows for a surprising level of replayabilit?y, and as each game has a hard limit, it's not so daunting bringing back to?? the table.

Monopoly Tropical Tycoon

Monopoly Tropical Tycoon is a more premium experience, even if it is a little dated. This game is to be played with the provided interactive CD (which, depressingly, some groups may not be able to us??e). The CD takes players through the game, with explanations and news broadcasts that give players interesting choices to make.

There are four new different types of buildings to build in Monopoly Tropical Tycoon, m??aking this more than "Monopoly but with old animations in the background." Also, the winning condition ?has changed from having the most cash, to having the most Fortune Points.

For a more immersive, involved, and strategic experience, Monopoly Tropical Tycoon is one of the best Monopoly? games out? there. And the CD is a great touch if you can stand the old graphics.

Monopoly The Mandalorian

Strangely enough, Monopoly The Mandalorian is a very interesting edition of Monopoly that includes combat, Grogu, and villains. Oh, and the board is smaller too for those wanting more ex??press experiences.

The Child will be moving around the board like ??the players, and players sharing a space will receive unique benefits. However, sooner or later one of the three Imperial villains will enter the board (Storm Trooper, Dark Troo??per, and Moff Gideon). You'll need to keep The Child safe from them, as encountering them will lead to combat.

If The Child gets captures, no one will win. Conversely, upon defeating Moff Gideon, the game will end and a winner will be decided like normal. Having combat and special abilities thanks to The Child makes this version of Monopoly infinitely more interesting.

Monopoly Gamer Mario Kart

Upon first glance, I wrote Monopoly Gamer Mario Kart off as likely another reskin, until I looked closer. This edition provides a quicker game of Monopoly that has lots ?of interesting and thematic additions.

Using coins, players will use their chosen racer (e??ach with special abilities) to drift around the board and purchase tracks with their coins. Each property is worth points, which is what counts instead of col??d hard coins. Upon passing "Go!" players can pay to enter a randomly selected race, which they'll then compete in.

With the powers from Mario Kart and the racing, Monopoly Gamer Mario Kart offers a strangely refreshing and infinitely more enjoyable variant of Monopoly that people of all ages can enjoy.

The Luxury Edition of Monopoly doesn’t have any differences in gameplay from the classic game, but the board and its components are beautiful collector’s items. Return of the Jedi Monopoly takes players back to the classic? Star Wars film in style. Each player character has a unique power that activates when you roll the Rebel Alliance icon on the dice, which gives the game more replay value. Properties represent key locations from the movie, while railroads are converted to some of the franchise’s most iconic vehicles, including the Millennium Falcon and the AT-ST walker.

12. Monopoly: Ultimate Banking

If dealing with all the paper bills was a part of Monopoly that got on your nerves, the game’s Ultimate Banking Edition is the answer. Pl??ayers will have their own bank card, and can simply tap? to purchase the properties on the board. In addition, the value of these properties can change with the market, which ultimately makes the game of Monopoly even more volatile and exciting.

Board Games will always be a mainstay of family entertainment. They offer not only bonding time, but learning experiences and ??a lot of laughter. For younger children, they may not always have the longest attention spans, so playing long winded, strategy-based games is pretty much out of the question, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t options. 

Whatever the age of the kid you’re trying to play with, there’s a board game suitabl?e for them. As a parent, I feel qualified to discuss some of our favorite choices, the ones that get pulled out of their dedicated cupboard more often, and why we love them. The suggested ages here are all the ‘officialâ€?ones suggest??ed by the game itself.

Clue Junior (Ages 5+)

Of course, the original, adult version of Clue is wildly inappropriate for children. Nobody wants to introduce their five-year-old to the concept of murder. However, the Junior version of Clue involves a much more?? child-friendly ‘whodunit�- find out who ate the last slice of cake, when, and what they drank t??o wash it down. The main characters are still there, even if we're missing out on the iconic murder weapons.

Clue Junior promotes critical thinking, discovery, ??and discussion, so it’s perfect for a spot of family bonding. It’s even better if you decide to partake in a slice of cake as you play.

Monopoly Junior (Ages 5+)

I debated whether or not any form of Monopoly should make an appearance on this list, due to my own memories of how competitive this game would become during family Christmas celebrations. However, there’s now a Junior version of the game that woul?d have prevented many tantrums back in my day. 

In the Junior version of Monopoly, children have the chance to buy properties such as the Pet Store and the Video Game Arcade using only single dollar bills, to avoid too much math-based confusion. The biggest argument that will come out of Monopoly Junior will be ‘who gets to play as the Dinosaur?�/p>

Scrabble (Regular & Junior) (Ages 5+)

I’m not sure this one needs too much ex??planation, but I’ll give i?t a go anyway. 

Scrabble is an amazing way of expanding a child’s vocabulary and helping them with their spelling. There’s no better way of inspiring a child’s desire to learn than doing it with them, and I have many fond memories of sitting with my Grandparents, a dictionary beside us, as we battled it out for domination of the Scrabble board. 

There’s also a Junior version of Scrabble, which aims to promote independent thinking by giving so??me half pre-made words for children to fill in the gaps. The board is cuter, too, with animals and other illustrations to inspire their love of words.

Mouse Trap (Ages 6+)

I never claimed that everything on this list would be a learning experience for the children in your life, and Mouse Trap might be the most fun of any of the games here. That said, it ?does help children to practise their construction and fine motor skills as they work to set up the board and, short of anything else, it?? might help them to gain some patience. 

That said, if your kids are anything like mine (or myself, as a youngster) they might get more fun out of Mouse Trap purely by setting it up and then wa??tching everything fall apart to trap the mouse. Laughter is pretty much g?uaranteed.

Candy Land (Ages 3+)

A simple game of counting and racing, Candy Land is suitable for very young children and will help them to develop not only their counting skills, but also th??e?ir ability to take turns, which is always welcome in the eyes of any parent. 

In case you’re wondering, Sugar Rush, the arcade game that’s home to Vanellope lives in Wreck It Ralph, was very much inspired by Candly Land. The board game, too, involves characters such as King Kandy and locations such as Candy Cane Forest and Gumdrop Mountain. If your kids love Wreck It Ralph, this game might just blow their minds. 

Chutes and Ladders (Ages 3+)

This one is pretty self explanatory and a staple of childhood worldwide (although known by different names, such as �em>Snakes and Ladders�in the UK). It’s simple, you roll a dice and move that number of spaces. If you land on a Ladder,? you go up. If you land on a Chute, you go down.

To this day, I’m not entirely sure what this teaches kids. Perhaps that, it’s okay to lose, sometimes, and things? often happen that we can’t control, like falling down a Chute and ending up miles from where we were. That’s life, I suppose. Regardless, this one is a fun and quick game to play with th??e kids when they’re bored and feeling restless.

Guess Who? (Ages 6+)

At first glance, Guess Who might just seem like a fun game to get the kids focused and talking about something. However, Guess Who builds memory retention, helps very yo?ung children work on their vocabulary, and also helps them to build the skill of critical thinking. 

As a side note, there’s also many variants of this game which work on the same concept and you’re likely to find one for your childs favorite franchise - the Paw Patrol version is a favorite in my house. If your child is a fan of potty humor, there is a version called �em>Guess Poo�which I won’t try to describe, but I’m pretty sure you can figure ou??t the aim of that game.&??nbsp;

Jumanji (Ages 5+)

Okay, so maybe this one isn’t the best for very young children and, if I may offer some sage a??dvice, maybe don’t let them watch the movie before picking up the game to actually play. I probably wouldn't disappear for too long during play either, lest th?e kids start to think you’ve been sucked into the jungle.

However, with that said, Jumanji is excellent for teaching critical thinking as it involves cracking codes and also encourages children to take turns, as all good board games do. Perhaps the biggest draw of Jumanji, though, is the fact that it’s nostalgic ??for parents who were young when the movie was released in 19?95. 

Trouble (Ages 5+)

Any game that has a dice or multiple involved carries a certain amount of risk of losing said dice. That’s just a fact of life, especially when you’re playing with kids. However, Trouble removes this risk by enclosing the dice in a little dome in the middle ?and, as someone with a bag full of extra dice, that’s a solid selling point.

I mean, it’s also good for helpin?g kids perfect their counting skills, at least as far as six, instills what I wou?ld consider a healthy amount of competitiveness and the race to win is always sure to get kids excited. 

Fun fact, Trouble is known as �em>Frustration�in the UK and I can confirm that the name is?? appropriate.

Operation (Ages 6+)

Operation is an undeniable classic for children. It’s got jump scares, which never fail to elicit laughter, is a great way of helping little ones fine tune their motor skills and, of course, it’s simply fun. The design has been the ??same since I was a child, and I can’t see i?t changing any time soon. 

Any game with a jump scare element is sure to be beloved by kids. Buckaroo and Pop-Up Pirate are in the same vein? a??nd get honorable mentions, here.

It depends on your version of Monopoly, but the classic version (and many derivatives) has you start with $1500.

There’s also a suggeste?d way to divvy out the bills, which has changed over the years. The way I ?remember it from years ago is:

• 2 x $500
• 2 x $100
• 2 x $50
• 6 x $20
• 5 x $10
• 5 x $5
• 5 x $1

If someone tells you that’s the way they remember it, they’re not wrong. However, some time in recent years, this changed. It now often looks like:

• 2 x $500
• 4 x $100
• 1 x $50
• 1 x $20
• 2 x $10
• 1 x $5
• 5 x $1

A bit harder to remember, but who carries small change these days? Really, it doesn’t matter how you choose to hand out the bills. That’s just what’s suggested in the manual. What matters is what they add up to: $1500. You can give everyone three $500s and make change from?? there? if you want to.

The distribution of bills was largely just to avoid running out of a particular value. However, the amount of money contained in a new box of Monopoly has changed over the years, so that’s ??less of a problem.

Note that this only applies to classic, vanilla Monopoly, as well as versions that follow the same values. Others, like Monopoly Empire and Monopoly Junior have different economies that require differen??t amounts, and it isn’t always even.
