Past Monster Hunter games have offered extensive customization options for both the player character and animal companions. The newest entry to the series, Monster Hunter Wilds, lets players ????create their Hunter’s look, as well as that of their Palico. But what about your Seikret?

Seikret customization in the open beta

When starting Monster Hunter Wilds, you’re met with elaborate customization options for your Hunter and Palico, but not your Seikret mount. You find a Seikret during one?? of the opening cutscenes, after which it beco?mes your trusty companion. This Seikret is green and purple and comes with a predetermined set of gear.

In the Monster Hunter Wilds open beta, the Sei??kret is not customizable. You can change the appearance of your Hunter and Palico at any time, but not your Seikret.

Keep in mind that the open beta is just that: a beta. Players are only given access to a small slice of the full game. The full release of Monster Hunter Wilds will be much bigger with lots? of additiona??l features.

Seikret customization in the full release

Despite what we can see in the open beta, there are many indications that the full release of Monster Hunter Wilds will include some degree of Seikret customization. Some of the DLC bonus packs include special accessories for your Seikret, and one of the developer showcase streams included a striking red and yellow Seikret. Duri??ng this stream, it was confirmed that not only can you dress up your Seikret, but you can change its color too!

//youtu.be/SZ3L0-Q5tHw?t=1235

How exactly this will work remains a mystery. Perhaps players will find new Seikret mounts as the story progresses, or somehow gain the ability to dye their Seikret’s feathers. Some accessories can be bought in DLC cosmetic packs, but I expect other accessories to be obtainable via gameplay. All we know for now is that Seikrets can indeed be dressed up it’s just a matter of how.

Monster Hunter Wilds multiplayer can be co??nfusing because it also has this feature called Link Party. If you want to know what Link Party is and how to actually go on hunts together with your friends, here’s what you’ll need to know.

How multiplayer works in Monster Hunter Wilds

First, you will have to enter a lobby. Whether it’s any type of lobby will be up to you. Preferably, you’ll want to create a Privat?e or an Online Single Player one.

Monster Hunter Wilds invite friends
Screenshot by Destructoid

Once in a game instance, perform the following to invite fri??ends:

  • Press your options button or bound key to bring up your “Items & Equipmentâ€?menu.
  • Head over to the Communication tab.
  • Hit either “Link Partyâ€?or “Invite a Friend.â€?/li>

  • Invite your friend(s) to your instance.

Your friends are now in your lobby but no??t in your current mission or hun??t.

This is the part that may confuse some, so you have som?e options here. If you are looking to take on a specific quest via Alma, you can do so by picking it and having people in your lobby join.

However, if you want to go ?out and do open-world activities together in real-time or seamlessly, you’re looking at Link Party and Environment Link.

Monster Hunter Wilds Link Party
Screenshot by Destructoid

Link Party is a new feature in Monster Hunter Wilds where up to four people in the same matchmade? lobby can do quests and hunts together.

It’s similar to World and Rise, where if someone posted a hunt, people would be notified and could join. However, with a more open-world aspect to this game, you can do that and even venture out together in a shar??ed instanc?e.

Link Party is for hunts and a private group chat with your members. However, Environment Link is for open ven?turing.

If your party consists of onl??y four people, you might as well default to Environment Link to get access to all of the above. In this scenario, just invite your exist?ing members in your lobby to an Environment Link, so then you’re all set.

The o??nly downside is that the invitation system allows you to select one person at a time, making this a bit of a hassle.

Monster Hunter Wilds is going to occupy the gaming sphere for a long time, with many returning franchise players and many new faces. For newer players, getting into Monster Hunter Wilds can ??be a lot, so here are the best starting weapons.

Best starting weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds, ranked

Just because this list will show what we consider to be the best starting weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds does not mean that these are overpowered or better than the others. This is more for ease o??f use and getting accustomed to the game’s mechanics.

Great Sword, Long Sword, Sword and Shield, and Dual Blades

These weapons are quite flexible and can be under?stood rather easily. They also pair well as primary or secondary weapons for something mo??re complicated.

Monster Hunter Wilds Great Sword
Image via Capcom

The Great Sword is kind of the most versatile weapon class in Wilds. It ex??cels in damage and doesn’t sacrifice a lot. There’s definitely a skill ceiling to learning more advanced techniques, but beginners can?? get by just fine by doing some slashing and defensive maneuvers.

Monster Hunter Wilds Long Sword
Image via Capcom

The Long Sword is very similar to the Great Sword in that it has just a??s good damage. However, it has a “spiri?t gaugemechanic where once it’s filled up, you can use that to deliver devastating blows to the monsters. It also has a counter mechanic for more defensive play.

Monster Hunter Wilds Sword and Shield
Image via Capcom

The Sword and Shield is?? more for people who may find it difficult to dodge attacks. You sacrifice attack power for sturdier defensive options. Playing with something more defensive c??an slowly help you study monster attack patterns.

Monster Hunter Wilds Dual Blades
Image via Capcom

Contrary to the Sword and Shield, the Dual Blades are more for players who want a more hyper-aggressive playstyle. There are fewer defensive options for these players, so the nam??e of the game is knowing when to dodge, run away, or wait for an opening.

Hammer, Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Lance, and Gunlance

These weapons mig??ht seem a bit straightforward, but h??ave some major strengths that require more setups in mind.

Monster Hunter Wilds Hammer
Image via Capcom

The Hammer is a really strong weapon and sort of the heavy version of the Dual Blades. It’s all about going on the offensive, but you have to coordinate your ??attacks better, as the attack animations a?re a lot longer.

Monster Hunter Wilds Charge Blade
Image via Capcom

The Charge Blade is like a more complex Great Sword, except it has two stances that go hand-in-hand with each other. It can block during the Sword stance, which is what you will use to charge your phials. These phials are then ??used when switching to the Axe stance, where you’ll deal big damage. Mobility might be a problem, but it’s very much compensated by the amount of damage you can potentially deal.

Monster Hunter Wilds Switch Axe
Image via Capcom

The Switch Axe basically feels like the combination of the Long Swo??rd and the Charge Blade. You build meter in Axe mode to turn your weapon into a giant sword, but there’s another meter you build up during the Sword mode to become amped. It’s like evolving your weapon twice, with varied moves along the way.

Monster Hunter Wilds Lance
Image via Capcom

The Lance is a more defensive weapon to take if you want something heftier than the Sword and Shield. It’ll be great in a team setting to take aggro and perform good pokes while your teammates can more safe??ly approach and damage monsters.

Monster Hunter Wilds Gunlance
Image via Capcom

If you like the Lance and want something with more oomph, then the Gunlance is just that. It’s really slow and has it?s drawbacks against faster monsters, but it ca??n be a beast with proper setups.

Bow, Heavy Bowgun, Light Bowgun, Hunting Horn

The Bows and Bowguns are very powerful ranged weapons in Monster Hunter games. How you shoot isn’t like a traditio?nal FPS or third-person shooter, especi?ally having to take ammunition and crafting into consideration. Still, even if you need to go a bit out of your way to make these work, the ranged weapons are excellent choices as secondaries for ranged play.

Monster Hunter Wilds Hunting Horn
Image via Capcom

Hunting Horns are what would happen if Hammers became support weapons. Though that may sound ??really cool, you need to have good timing for getting buffs; otherwise, you’re just using this as another Hammer alternative.

Insect Glaive

Monster Hunter Wilds Insect Glaive
Image via Capcom

Lastly is the Insect Glaive. It’s the most complicated weapon class in Monster Hunter games in general. You hav?e three different buffs that you ideally want to have on at all times for this? weapon to really shine.

It excels in aerial combat, allowing you to? mount monsters a lot better t??han other weapons. It’s also one of the better weapons in terms of mobility overall, but without those aforementioned buffs, you’re not going to get a lot out of this weapon.

You can’t mash around with your ba??sic attacks and some dodging to get results. You really need to learn thi?s, or you’re going to have a hard time dealing any damage.

Famous RPG developer Obsidian is launching its next fantasy roleplaying game, Avowed, into the wild on February 18. This game is a new action RPG that takes place in the acclaimed Pillars of Eternity universe but doesn't necessarily require you to play those games to get into this experience. You'll be investigating a plague that has afflicted the Living Lands, and it is up to you to thwart it with your melee and magical skills. Back in November, our preview called the game a "masterpiece in the making."

"Its accessible mechanics make it a welcoming experience for newcomers to the genre, while its diverse combat tactics provide a satisfying challenge," said the article by Kristina ?Ebanez. "In just a few hours, I found myself lost in its expansive world, filled with a variety of activities." Hopefully, it can deliver, despite its limitation to 30 frames per second on Xbox Series X|S. It's one of those February 2025 games to be excited for, regardless.

Starting with any leader, you can start your own civilization, build its cities, and create new technologies to make your civilization competitive against others. You'll have to deal with each Age as time progresses, adding new gameplay mechanics to learn and adapt to. The leader you choose, like Benjamin Franklin or Lafayette, has a unique ability, and according to the Steam page, "can further be improved with customizable?? attri??butes earned through gameplay." They are no longer tied to a specific society.

"Firaxis probably could have gotten away with a safer approach with this installment, opting for just better graphics," said our 9/10 review. "Instead, it boldly revamped a lot of the core systems to make the entire game?? more streamlined for both newcomers and veterans alike."

This ope??n world game is advertised to feature "bustling cities" and "lush forests" as you exp??lore the historic-themed areas.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 seems to be the first big critical hit of 2025. It currently has an 88 Metacritic score from 53 different outlets for its PC version. "Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is one I often dreamed of existing when I was growing up watching a ton of medieval-time movies and TV shows," said our review. "One where you get to actually make decisions, and have complete control over your choices, right or wrong." It ?also says that the game has "such a satisfying and rewarding combat system," despite some bugs along the way.

The wacky adventures of Goro Majima continues in Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii as he forgets who he is and becomes a captain of the sea. After getting shipwrecked and saved by a kid named Noah, he finds himself on the high seas taking on modern-day pirates and criminals along the way in an eccentric adventure that features dual-blade action and a customizable ship. It may put the extremely dull Skull and Bones to shame as it also features naval combat.

As this is a spinoff, fans are expecting the game to be shorter than the mainline Like a Dragon/Yakuza titles. Thankfully, it will be around 1.3-1.5x longer than Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name, according to a Famitsu interview (via GameRant) with Ryu Ga Gotoku boss Masayoshi Yokoyama, so there will?? be?? quite a lot of content to scour through.

This time, it all takes place in the Forbidden Lands, which has drastically changing weather than can dynamically alter our gameplay experience. "Not only will hunters have a multitude of weapons and armor to choose from, but the art of the hunt itself has evolved as hunters learn to anticipate monstersbehavior and familiarize themselves with their environment," explains the Steam page.

You'll be able to get a sneak peek of the action when the second open beta begins on February 6 and ends? on February 9. Another starts a week later on February 13 and runs until February 16. When the game fully launches, it's likely going to be one of the most popular February 2025 games.

We've known for some time now that Capcom's next flagship release, Monster Hunter: Wilds, ma??y be a pain in the butt to run. The previous beta wasn't performant at all, and though Capcom has performed some optimizations since the new set of hardware requirements doesn't give me much hope.

I haven't been hiding my annoyance at how hard t??o run Capcom's more recent RPGs have been, and so I was hoping that the team would manage to do some black magic to make Monster Hunter: Wilds easier to run. Thing is, it doesn't seem like Capcom's been able to do much in this respect after all, because the new set of system requirements is a real disappointment. The bottom line is that we should generally expect it to run more or less the same as Dragon's Dogma 2 did. Poorly, in other words.

//www.reddit.com/r/nvidia/comments/1ii0jcf/monster_hunter_wilds_new_updated_pc_system/#lightbox

Expect to have to use Frame-Gen to get 60 FPS in Monster Hunter: Wilds

Don't get me wrong, the "Recommended" set of PC system requirements for Monster Hunter: Wilds has been reduced by a smidge. Targeting the "Medium" settings preset at 1080P with a goal of maintaining 60 FPS, Capcom now recommends the RX 6600 or the RTX 2060 Super graphics cards (as opposed to the previous requirements' RX 6700XT and 2070 Super GPUs). Solid, right? The problem is that this 60 FPS target is still relying o??n some manner of frame-gen to actually reach the c??ap.

I've previously explained why relying on frame generation is a bad, bad time if you're even remotely sensitive to input latency, and Capcom just doesn't understand how frame-gen is supposed to be used in the first place. Broadly, even Nvidia recommends for its own branded, AI-driven DLFG to be used when you already have at least a baseline of 60 na??tive FPS. Otherwise, you're just inviting extr??eme input latency, and games feel slow and sluggish. To say nothing of the extreme artifacting you're bound to get at such low frame rates.

And heck, if you take a gander at the "Ultra" settings preset for Monster Hunter: Wilds, we see the same exact problem pop up again. To run the game at an upscaled 4K resolution with a 60 FPS target, you'll still want to rely on frame generation to even reach the target in the firs?t place. To accomplish this, Capcom recommends the RTX 4070Ti Super or the RX 7800 XT or higher, and it strikes me as quite ridiculous that these GPUs cannot ge?t a reasonable frame rate without resorting to "fake" frames.

It's a mess, frankly, and this is precisely why AI-generated frames are getting a bad rep. All in all, then, I'm not happy at all with what Capcom is doing here, and if you're hoping for things to get better on launch day, I recommend taking a gander at what kind of performance people with RTX 5090s are g?etting. Heck, the Steam Deck can only reasonably run Monster Hunter Wilds at a striking 213x132 rendering resolution. I know it's a low-spec device, but good grief. So, in summary, I hope you've got a great rig, because Monster Hunter: Wilds sure does seem like a pain to run.

Even though Monster Hunter Wilds launches at the end of February, you can tune in for an early start with the next beta. Find out how to join the MHW Open Beta 2, including ??what to expect in gameplay.

How to participate in Monster Hunter Wilds Beta 2

You can participate in the MHW Beta 2 by installing the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta file on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or Steam. Download ??the file to play during the test's two phases:

Open Beta Period Start Date End Date
Phase 1 Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. PT/6 p.m. CT/10 p.m. ET Feb. 9 at 6:59 p.m. PT/8:59 CT/9:59 p.m.
Phase 2 Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. PT/6 p.m. CT/10 p.m. ET Feb. 16 at 6:59 p.m. PT/8:59 CT/9:59 p.m.

The file should arrive closer to Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta 2's launch, so look out for it in the library by then. There don't seem to be any registration requirements, as the download should be available for anyone who has compatible devices. You don't need a PlayStation Plus or Xbox Game Pass to participate in the Open Beta, but it will be necessary to play the full version upon MHW's release.

To prepare for the download, ensure y?our preferred device has a minimum of 29 GB of free space. Steam users should install the latest driver on their PC, specifically for those who use an AMD GPU.

What's included in the Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta 2 test?

Monster Hunter Wilds' second Open Beta test primarily features content from the game's first-ever test in November 2024. This includes Character Creation, Story Trial, and, of course, monster hunting. If you participated in the first beta, you can look forward to the new Gypceros Hunt. This bird wyvern is a returning creature that first appeared in the original Monster Hunter.

You can carry over your builds from Character Creation to the full game (those who participated in the first beta can also transfer content from here). Once you've created your character, you'll embark on a Story Trial that allows you to experience the game's opening cutscene and a tutorial for the Chatacabra hunt. Additionally, you'll unlock the Doshaguma hunt, which can familiarize you more with weapons, monsters, and the Seikret mount.

All progress you've made during this time, excluding Character Cre??ation, will not transfer over to the full game. That means you'll need to start from scratch upon launch. There are a few more surprises for the OB2, but they will be kept under wraps until the beta is released. However, be aware that some issues may come up in your playtest, as there are known problems with performance, weapon mechanics, and game balance. The development team continues to polish these features, which will hopefully be fixed for its official debut.

All Monster Hunter Wilds Beta rewards and how to claim them

Anyone participating in the Monster Hunter Wilds OBT 2 earns the Open Beta Test Bonus Pendant and OBT 2 Bonus Item Pack. It's crucial to complete yo?ur Character Creation for it, or else you may lose out on these exclusive valuables. The pendant provides a decorative animal charm, attachable to your we?apon or Seikret. As for the OBT 2 Bonus Pack, here's what you can expect:

  • 10 Raw Meat
  • 3 Shock Trap
  • 3 Pitfall Trap
  • 10 Tranq Bomb
  • 3 Large Barrel Bomb
  • 5 Armor Sphere
  • 10 Flash Pod
  • 10 Large Dung Pod

When Monster Hunter Wilds officially releases, use the same plat??form account you used during the beta to c??laim these rewards.

Only on?e pendant and pack can be acquired for each account. However, if you participated in the first beta, you can claim both Beta Test Item Packs from the November and F??ebruary periods.

Monster Hunter Wilds currently has 14 weapons to use in the game. Each weapon brings its own use to the table, but not all of them can help you excel in the battle. To help you find the ideal weapon, we have created a tier list of all weapons in Monster Hunter Wilds.

Monster Hunters Wilds weapon tier list

Here is the tier list of all weapons in M??onster H?unter Wilds:

Tier Weapon
S Long Sword, Bow, Great Sword
A Dual Blades, Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Gunlance
B Heavy Bowgun, Hammer, Insect Glaive
C Light Bowgun
D Sword & Shield, Lance, Hunting Horn

S-Tier

Great Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds

These weapons are incredibly strong and if you have them, then you are already a? beast in this game. However, it is not easy to unlock them. Here is t??he list of all S-Tier weapons:

Weapon Description
Long Sword The Long Sword is great at melee range and it inflicts devasting damage to enemies.
Bow The Bow is incredibly fast and a beast at ranged attacks.
Great Sword The Great Sword is incredibly powerful but is a slow and heavy weapon.

A-Tier

Dual Blades in Monster Hunter Wilds

Sometimes, you can opt for these weapons as they can easily compete with an S-Tier weapon. Something else to note is that they offer better handling than?? the S-Tier weapons, but obviously fall just short?? in terms of damage. Here is the list of all A-Tier weapons:

Weapon Description
Dual Blades Dual Blades are light and are great at unleashing a flurry of attacks.
Charge Blade The Charge Blade is incredibly fast and powerful.
Switch Axe The Switch Axe inflicts elemental damage.

At the time of writing, Capcom has confirmed the following monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds, including known habitats:

  • Oilwell Basin:

    • Rompopolo
    • Ajarakun
    • The Black Flame

  • Scarlet Forest

    • Uth Duna
    • Lala Barina
    • Congalala

  • Windward Plains:

    • Balahara
    • Quematrice
    • Doshaguma
    • Chatacabra
    • Rey Dau
    • Ceratonoth
    • Dalthydon

  • Unknown Habitat:

    • Rathalos
    • Rathian
    • Yian Kut-Ku
    • Arkveld (The White Wraith)

    • Gypceros

Most creatures have already been established in the Windward Plains, Scarlet Forest, and Oilwell Basin ecosystems. However, a few of them have unknown habitats that may be unveiled closer to the game's release. Let's break them all down to give you a better understanding of each confirmed monster in Monster Hunter Wilds.

All Oilwell Basin monsters

Rompopolo

Rompopolo in MHW

Rompopolo is a brute wyvern that lingers in areas of deep oil silt. The mon??ster utilizes a toxic gas spray with its tongue and tail. Watch out for its explosive attacks that trigger from the ground.

Ajarakun

Ajarakun in MHW

The fanged beast, Ajarakan, is ??a master of agility, swiftly moving around the battlefield using its claws. This monster ha?s similar features to that of the Black Flame, harnessing the element of fire. When it powers up, the creature emits a molten-like effect, creating flames from its back.

The Black Flame

The Black Flame in MHW

Monster Hunter Wild's fifth trailer gave us a sneak peek into the Black Flame's combat strategy. This co??lossal creature unleashes a deadly, fiery attack, grabbing anyone who stands in its way with its tentacle-like arms. Given its brute force, it seems more potent than the other two Oilwell Basin enemies.

All Scarlet Forest monsters

Uth Duna

Uth Duna in MHW

Uth Dunda is a levi?athan a?pex predator that lingers around water-rich environments. It tends to show up more frequently during Downpour storms, taking advantage of the moisture to produce a protective veil.

Lala Barina

Lala Barina in MHW

The Lala Barina falls under the arachnoid species Temnoceran, introduced in Monster Hunter 4. When its thorax is open, it almost resembles a ?rose blooming. However, don't be fooled by its beauty; it proves fatal when getting too close.

Congalala

Congalala in MHW

The fluffy fanged beast, Congalala, from Monster Hunter 2, makes a triumphant return in the latest iteration. Its hysterical fa??rting tactic, a signature move fr?om its predecessor, is back to challenge and potentially blow away your entire team.

All Windward Plains monsters

Balahara

Balahara in MHW

Embark on a desert adventure to encounter the leviathan, Balahara. This cunning monster, known for its quicksand traps, can turn your exploration into a tense battle. The surprise element of its traps, triggering an unexpected attack on those who fall victim, adds a thrilling tension to your encounters??.

Quematrice

Quematrice in MHW
Image via Capcom

Like the Rompopolo, Quematrice is a brute wyvern with fiery strikes. Its extended tail can lay a flammable substance on the ground to inflict?? damage on your team. The monster often figh?ts against smaller creatures around Windward Plains.

Doshaguma

Doshaguma in MHW

During the PlayStation State of Play 2024, we got our first look at the fanged beast Doshaguma. The lion-like creature is the deadliest when standing on its tw??o legs, resulting in a damaging claw strike. Moreover, the Doshaguman can sometimes come in packs, m??aking them stronger together.

Chatacabra

Chatacabra in MHW
Image via Capcom

The Chatacabr??a's tongue is a lethal weapon, enhancing its combat strategy. The monster's saliva, with its stone-inducing effect, makes its forelimb attacks even more dangerous by furthering its powe??r.

Rey Dau

While exploring the Windward Plains, you may come face to face with the Rey Dau, a formidable apex predator that soars high in the sky. The Rey Dau's electric powers, a result of its unique adaptation to storms, could potential??ly zap you out of existence.

Ceratonoth

Ceratonoth in MHW

Male Ceratonoths take center stage in large herds, protecting females from lightning. They utilize their dorsal horns to take in lightning strikes and unleash them on?to the ground.

Dalthydon

Dalthydon in MHW

Even though the Dalthydon is a small herbivorous wyvern, it can still pack a punch with its defensive head shell. The ?beast occasionally changes its habitats, so you may not always find it in the same place.

All monsters with unknown habitats

Rathalos

Rathalos in MHW

Considering that the Rathalos has appeared in every MH entry, it's no surprise to see it in Monster Hunter Wilds. You can briefly see this flying wyvern at the end of the reveal trailer, confirming the King of the Skies comeback.

Rathian

Rathian in MHW

Rathalos isn't ??the only returning creature with the reveal of the Queen of the Land, Rathian. As a flying wyvern, it unleashes a flame-filled attack, hitting you with multiple blasts. There could potentially be other types of strikes in the newest version, but we'll have to see how it'll play out.

Yian Kut-Ku

Yian Kut Ku in MHW

The Yian Kut-Ku is one of the last known returning monsters of Monster Hunter Wilds. This bird wyvern of??ten travels in packs, spouting out lava-like projectiles from its mouth. You must always be on the move with these creatures to reduce the risk of encountering flammable attac?ks.

Arkveld (The White Wraith)

Arkveld in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Arkveld, also known as the "White Wraith," makes its debut in Monster Hunter Wilds. This scaly creature was presumed to be extinct, ?but now it's confirmed to be alive and well in the latest entry. Unlike most on this list, there's not much information regarding this monster, so its habitat remains a mystery.

Seikret

Seikret in Monster Hunter Wilds

The Seikret species is the newest mount introduced in Monster Hunter Wilds. Given that it is a flying wyvern, it can glide you around the Forbidden Lan??ds to reach higher plac?es. It also has a superb sense of smell that takes you to places you've marked automatically.

Gypceros

The Monster Hunter Wilds Open Beta 2 announcement revealed the return of the bird wyvern, Gypceros. The creature has been with the franchise since the beginning, with the first-ever MH installment. If you want to familiarize yourself with this wyvern, participate in the beta testing in early February.

Following up on the first round in October 2024, Capcom is getting ready for another Monster Hunter Wilds open beta test. This one officially kic??ks off on February 6 with ??content from the first test and a new hunting opportunity.

The meat of the new content is the ability to hunt Gypceros, a returning monster from the series. Features from the first test include Character Creation, Story Trial, and the Slay Doshaguma Quest. If y?ou ??already made a character in the first test, fear not, because that data can be carried over to the second. It can also be carried over to the full game when it launches, but that doesn't apply to game progress.

Watch as ??producer Ryozo Tsujimoto announces the test and schedule with his own eerily accurate custom characte??r below.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXWAYmEQKso

There are two sessions planned, and you don't have to be subscribed to PlayStation Plus or Gam??e Pass Core/Ultimate to try it out. Here's when you'll be able to play, complete with crossplay between the three platforms:

Monster Hunter Wilds open beta 2 schedule

  • Starts: Thursday, February 6, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. PT
  • Ends: Sunday, February 9, 2025 at 6:59 p.m. PT

  • Starts: Thursday, February 13, 2025 at 7:00 p.m. PT
  • Ends:  Sunday, February 16, 2025 at 6:59 p.m. PT

There are also special bonuses in store for everyone who participates in the beta test. A decorative charm for your weapon or Seikret, as well as an item pack, can all be rede?e?med in the full game.

According to Tsujimoto, they heard from a lot of players who either missed out on the first test or just want to play again. That prompted the planning for the upcoming test. He added that the team is still hard at work finishing the game, with adjustments and improvements underway that won't make it into the second beta in time. We'll see how those improvements stack up when Monster Hunter Wilds launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, an?d PC via Steam on February 28.

Early last month, Monster Hunter Wilds, the newest mainline entry in the long-running series, had an open beta on all platforms to give players an early taste of the action (and the developers some much needed feedback). While the beta was received well, many players agreed on one thing: something about the combat felt.. off. Things were a little limp, and the culprit quickly became apparent: a near total lack of hitstop.

For the uninitiated, "hitstop" is a period of freezeframes that games and animated media employ during a big impact to really sell the weight of the blow. It looks unrealistic, but it's ultra-satisfying when done appropriately, and it's a Monster Hunter staple.

Image via Capcom

A new interview over at PC Gamer with the game's director, Yuya Tokuda, reveals that the change was ironically the result of us Westerners complaining too much. "Many of the users from overseas commented that the hitstop was way too [intense]," Tokuda said regarding Monster Hunter: World. He expressed rel??ief that players? wanted it back, saying the feedback was "very positive."

Newer previews of the game's latest playable build have already reported vastly improved hitstop, making combat feel weightier and more satisfying. Speaking of combat, some weapons are getting "big changes" ahead of release, those being the Insect Glaive, Swi??tch Axe, Lance, and Sword & Shield. As a lance player who heard less-than?-favorable things from the open beta, this makes me very happy.

I wish I could throw my two cents into the opinion well but unfortunately I was out of town during the open beta. From the sound of it, I too would've been disappointed by the floatier feeling combat, but I'm almost glad I was spared that month of gnawing anxiety before learning about these positive changes. Monster Hunter Wilds ??is shaping up to be a series great, thanks in no small part to the team's enthusiasm for feedback.

The next entry to the beloved Monster Hunter series is on its way, continuing the hunt that started from the original. Here's everything you need to know about Monster Hunter Wilds, including a release date, platforms, and more.

When does Monster Hunter Wilds come out?

As per the PlayStation State of Play, Monster Hunter Wilds launches on Feb. 28, 2025. Pre-orders are availab?le for purchase, prov??iding you with the Guild Knight Set (Layered Armor).

What platforms will Monster Hunter Wilds be on?

Monster Hunter Wilds will be available to play on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Each system provides various editions, including Standard, Deluxe, and Premium Deluxe. Those who purchase the Premium Deluxe obtain two Cosmetic DLC Packs, which will be released at a later date. Additionally, anyone who has saved data for Monster Hunter World or Monster Hunter Iceborne earns the Felyne-based armor and weapons.

As for Switch, Monster Hunter Wilds isn't currently planned for it. Monster Hunter Rise did appear on Switch, but it currently looks like PC and beefier consoles are where Wilds is staying for now.

Monster Hunter Wilds trailers

The Game Awards 2023 revealed the very first trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds. It gave us a short sneak peek of various monsters and the formidable Forbidden L??ands.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyoBA0aCRNk&t=1s

We also see the playable character riding the new mount, Seikret. Not only is this creature used for traveling, but it can be an excellent asset for hunts. You can utilize it to stash away mu?ltiple gear, allowing you to heal and equip several weapons.

The Sony State of Play 2024 also gave us a first look into gameplay. It focuses more on the game's combat side, presenting severa?l brutal showdowns.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=2u6VmVmhh-k

The trailer ?shows creatures like the Doshaguma, a fanged beast that lingers in the Windward Plains. We also get a glimpse of the rept?ilian-like Chatacabra, which uses its saliva to power up its attacks.

In more recent news, the Release Date Reveal trailer dives further into the Monster Hunter Wilds world. You'll see how the Guild handles a few special assignments that put them against a fearsome new foe (not the adorable Palicos, of course). The monster is known as the "White Wraith," the primary subject of the Rese??arch Committee.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dJpKRWYNkE

Will Monster Hunter Wilds be open world?

Since there is little information about Monster Hunter Wilds' gameplay, it needs to be clarified whether the game wi??ll be open-world or not. However, t??he trailer may hint at this feature, mainly because it includes changing environments.

The Monster Hunter Wilds page mentions two hunting locales: a formidable location with c??hallenging monster??s and a much more peaceful area. Creatures also have designated ecosystems, where you'll primarily start in the Windward Plains.

Due to these unique environmental attributes, an open-world feature may pan out for Monster Hunter Wilds. We'll have to wait and see what Capcom confirms.

Thank goodness it's not a Leap Year! The highly anticipated Monster Hunter Wilds revealed its official release date as February 28, 2025, during today's State of Play. Pre-orders are available now with a MH Wilds Digital Mini Artbook for those who do so.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dJpKRWYNkE

I'm so excited for Wilds but until now it only had a 2025 release date, so I assumed it would be mid to late next year. I'm glad that's not the case! Wilds is also getting three unique editions: Standard, De?luxe, and Premium Deluxe. The Delux includes a Deluxe Pack DLC, while the Premium Deluxe inclu?des the Deluxe Pack, two COsmetic DLC packs, and other "premium bonuses".

The trailer also showed off some gameplay including some new monsters, but what caught me by surprise was how much story there appears to be in Wilds, based on the dialogue segments. Which to be honest, I??'m all for.

Monster Hunter Wilds is set ??to release on Play??Station 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on February 28, 2025.

Capcom has neglected to include crossplay in many of its past Monster Hunter titles, so some fans have given up hope that the next entry would have it. However, there may be a change in direction that lets us have Monster Hunter Wilds crossplay.

Monster Hunter Wilds crossplay is supported
Image via Capcom

Does Monster Hunter Wilds have crossplay?

Yes, Monster Hunter Wilds will have crossplay from day one. The game's official website confirms the feature, stating that?? all "players will be able to match with other players across all available platforms." You'll also be able to become friends with these players, no matter the system. If you don't like the idea of crossplay, it can be disabled from the in-game options.

Crossplay is a significant boost to the Monster Hunter community as it allows everyone to play together, no matter their console or PC set up. It will also surely keep Monster Hunter Wild's community thriving for many years to come.

Is there Monster Hunter Wilds cross save?

There is some bad news to deliver you, however. Monster Hunter Wilds will not support cross save, at leas?t? at this time of writing. "Save data (game progress, paid DLC etc.) will be managed separately by each platform," says the official website. "For this reason, it will not be possible to share save data across the different platforms."

If you're playing Monster Hunter Wilds on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S systems, you'll need to purchase either PlayStation Plus Essential or Xbox Game Pass Core to team up online. It's certainly a benefit to play this game on?? PC, in this inst?ance.

Perhaps the most exciting reveal at the event, at least to me, is a new trailer for Little Nightmares III. The upcoming sequel will feature online co-op gameplay, allowing you to ‘face your childhood fears together The third game in the Little Nightmares franchise was announced at Gamescom 2023, and the development team made the decision back in May 2024 to delay release until 2025, so I’m excited? to see what the new trailer will reveal.

The next phase of the Monster Hunter series is beginning to kick off with the PlayStation State of Play's Monster Hunter Wilds trailer. In it, we get a few breathtaking cine??matics and a first look into gameplay.

Prepare for an adrenaline-pumping adventure as the trailer introduces a host of formidable mo??nsters. The f??irst battle showcases a massive bear-like creature, promising a challenging boss fight. The reptilian adversaries are equally menacing, adding even more formidable showdowns.

Monster Hunter's classic combat still holds true in this next iteration, where we see the brutality of a gun first-hand??. And, of course, the?re needed to be at least one gigantic sword, as one of the characters deals a deadly blow to the creature.

Unfortunately, we didn't get an exact release date for Monster Hunter Wilds, as the trailer only depicted cinematics and gameplay. However, we do know that it is slated for 2??025 at le?ast, and wishlists are currently available.

Similar to past iterations, Monster Hunter Wilds?? has you hunting down for, you guessed it, monsters. Given that it's in the wilds, the environment will change constantly. That means extra challenges are ahead, bringing out unique wildlife across the Forbidden Lands.

For those who have journeyed with the series in the past, Wilds brings a wealth of n?ew moves, weapons, and equipment to master. Get ready to explore fresh strategies and unleash devastating attacks with these exciting? additions.

While we eagerly await an official release date, one thing is certain: Monster Hunter Wilds will be a multi-platform adventure. You can look forward to embarking on this thrilling hunt on ?PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime in 2025.

The Game Awards 2023 have come ?to a close, and it was another night filled with trophies ??and trailers. Even before the show started, there was a sheer glut of game reveals to watch.

With all the news, reveals, speeches, a??nd more, it can be hard to keep up with it all. So we've put together a list of every major reveal from The Game Awards 2023, so you can catch back up on the news you missed? or remember that neat-looking game you forgot the name of.

Here's all the headlines from the night.

Everything shown during The Game Awards 2023 pre-show

  • Josef Fares and Hazelight's origins return in a new form, as Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is getting a remake developed by Avantgarden. Expect to struggle balancing dual-stick efforts with all the tears flowing on February 28, 2024.
  • Daniel Mullins, the dev behind Inscryption, revealed the next project for the studio: Pony Island 2: Panda Circus. Suffice to say, I can't wait for this one. It looks just as mechanically eerie as the original Pony Island that put me onto this studio.

  • Color Gray Games, hot off The Case of the Golden Idol, has another mystery around the golden statue in The Rise of the Golden Idol. Quite a few surprises to kick this show off, and it's welcome!
  • We've got one more surprise in a new game from Finji and Sweet Baby: a third-person action/adventure game with some ghostly vibes called Usual June. That's set for 2025.
  • The Odd Gentlemen have an accessible music journey in Harmonium: The Musical. There's some really neat ideas here, from the great tunes to use of sign language throughout.
  • From the makers of Dead Cells comes Windblown, headed for PC early access in 2024. It seems like a co-op action brawler with a ton of character. It'll be interesting to see how this turns out.
  • The violet hyper-rhythm game Thumper gets a follow-up in Thrasher, a new but equally surreal and aggressive-looking game, in 2024. Heck yes.
  • World of Goo goos again with The World of Goo 2. Our own Timothy Monbleau says he'll only play it if it's on WiiWare, and I gotta say, I agree with him.

  • We close out the pre-show with a new look at Metaphor: ReFantazio, the new RPG from the makers of Persona 3 through 5. It's got a lot of new gameplay footage and a new release window of Fall 2024, and also looks fantastic. On to the show!

Everything shown during The Game Awards 2023

  • Exodus is the debut sci-fi time-bending game from Archetype Entertainment. It's from a team of BioWare veterans, and will apparently have Matthew McConaughey in it. No word on a release timeline yet.
  • God of War Ragnarok gets some DLC, Valhalla, for free on December 12. Seems like a good reason to pick the axe back up and go back to warrin'.
  • Big Walk is a new game from the Goose Game studio House House, and it's a cooperative adventure. Given their proclivity for immediately engaging mayhem, I'm intrigued. That's targeting 2025.
  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown is getting a demo on January 11. I was pleasantly surprised by the demo at SGF 2023, and I think you should have this on your radar as we head into the new year.
  • Senua's Saga: Hellblade II shows up with a new trailer and now targets 2024 for a launch. It's been a long road for this Xbox game, but hopefully it sticks the landing as well as the first did.

  • Ikumi Nakamura takes the stage again to show what her studio, Unseen, has been up to. It's called Kemuri, and though we didn't get to see much, it looks fantastic just from the slice here. I'm keen to see where this goes.
  • Moon Studios, the makers of the Ori series, debut a new action RPG dubbed No Rest For The Wicked. It's a different vibe from Ori, but after the excellence that was that duology, this could be one to watch.
  • Sega has thrown the kitchen sink at retro-heads everywhere, announcing a ton of new games in beloved series like Shinobi, Golden Axe, Crazy Taxi, and Jet Set Radio. Surprise!
  • Remember there's a new Budokai game on the way? Well, it's called Dragon Ball: Sparking! Zero, and it looks like some classic Budokai action. No release window for this yet.
  • Supermassive Games' Dead By Daylight crossover game is called The Casting of Frank Stone, and it looks positively creepy. Get excited for your actions to have horrible, horrible consequences in 2024.

  • Bah gawd, that's the Mana font! Square Enix is back with a new entry in the series, dubbed Visions of Mana. Rather than read my words, which would be positively enthused for this development, read up resident Mana fan Timothy's take on it here. That's set for 2024.
  • Team Ninja's Rise of Ronin sets a date for March 22, 2024. Which is exciting, but heads into a stacked Q1 2024, and directly against a release date for Dragon's Dogma 2. March is going to be a good one for action RPG fans, I guess.
  • Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele take the stage to show off OD. I'm still not really sure what it is. There were famous people and faces, and then screaming. Sure!
  • Jurassic Park Survival asks, could you really survive Jurassic Park? I'm really not sure why people keep trying to, when the evidence doesn't support their success. But you can still try in Survival, when it arrives on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
  • Black Myth: Wukong also appeared, to lock in a launch date of August 20, 2024. It still looks like a giant, electrifying action game, though recent reports about the studio might have shifted the tone around it.
  • Warframe is queueing up some new content with Whispers in the Walls, which features two Game Award-nominated voice talents in Ben starr and Neil Newbon. Is there any better reason to check Warframe out than that? Whispers arrives on December 13.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=bg_WUK4iaik

  • Tales of Kenzera: ZAU is a colorful, gorgeous-looking new Metroidvania under the EA Originals label, and looks like it's worth keeping an eye on when it lands on April 23, 2024.
  • Don't Nod and the team behind Life is Strange are back with more angst and emotions in Lost Records: Bloom & Rage. It ticks plenty of boxes fans of the Strange series probably dig, so hopefully it comes together just as well for late 2024.
  • The First Berzerker: Khazan is an action RPG in the DNF universe. I'm still not sure what all that entails, but it seems neat for those who dig DNF / Dungeon & Fighter. It's headed to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
  • We get some new Final Fantasy VII Rebirth footage amid an orchestra presentation, and it still looks fantastic. I think that's our first peek at Cid? Anyways, that's set to carry on with the remake trilogy in February. Also, Apex Legends gets a crossover with FF7 on January 9.
  • We get a brief tease of Honkai Star Rail's new area and characters, as well as some new monsters coming to Monster Hunter Now.
  • Blink and you'll miss it, but Skull and Bones finally arrives on February 16, 2024. For real. Seriously, this time.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXT9Lzrt7E8

  • In a match made in vampire heaven, Arkane Lyon is crafting Marvel's Blade, putting their own spin on the vampire hunter as Marvel pushes further into video games. Not many details were shown, but this does seem like a fantastic proposition.
  • Lightspeed LA's Steve C. Martin is here to talk about a new project, The Last Sentinel. Not much info for now, but it looks pretty neat.
  • Nexon's The First Descendant promises some sci-fi battles and eerie robot designs in summer 2024.
  • Zenless Zone Zero will arrive in 2024. That's it, that's all we know.
  • For the mecha sickos, Mecha Break looks like a fun indulgence in crafting, flying, and scrapping. All those lasers and missiles certainly seem like a good time. A closed alpha test is on the way for that.
  • Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2 arrives on September 9, 2024. So if you've been eager to stomp on some tyranids and wield a chainsaw sword, that will be the date to do it, and not a second sooner.
  • The creators of GTFO announce a new chapter coming to the game, as well as a new game. It's another heist project, called Den of Wolves. Not much info, but looks neat.
  • There's another extraction shooter on the way too, in Exoborne. More is coming in 2024 on that, though the extraction genre is definitely starting to feel crowded.
  • Matt Mercer takes the stage to present Asgard's Wrath 2, a sequel to Asgard's Wrath. It's a VR game that's got some fantasy vibes, and it arrives on December 15, 2023.
  • We get a quick look at the Fallout TV show again, and more importantly, Walton Goggins.
  • Palia heads to Nintendo Switch, for free, on December 14.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKQem4Z6ioQ

  • Light No Fire is the next big project from No Man's Sky team Hello Games, and it's no less ambitious, attempting to create a massive singular world. I respect this team's drive to keep chasing massive, titanic goals. No release date or window yet, though.
  • RTS project Stormgate wants to bring back the glory days of StarCraft, and i say we let them try. The team is targeting a summer 2024 launch, and is currently on Kickstarter.
  • Elphelt Valentine is the next combatant to enter the ring in Guilty Gear Strive, trading the bridal gown for idol attire. Plus, Strive is getting a three-on-three team battle mode. Sounds interesting. Elphelt is out on December 8, while team battles hit sometime next year in 2024.
  • Final Fantasy XVI is getting two pieces of DLC. One, Echoes of the Fallen, shadow-drops tonight. The other, The Rising Tide, arrives sometime in spring 2024.
  • Remedy, while accepting the award for Best Game Direction, announces that New Game Plus is coming to Alan Wake 2 on December 11. Love a good podium surprise!
  • The Finals from Embark joins the shadow-drop train, as the new shooter is out tonight. Boot that up if you're looking for a post-Game Awards hang-out game with pals, I suppose.
  • For one final announcement at The Game Awards 2023, Capcom takes the stage to reveal Monster Hunter Wilds, a new entry in the legendary Monster Hunter series that arrives in 2025. I already love the chocobo-like bird you ride around everywhere, plus all the giant monster fighting.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyoBA0aCRNk

  • But just because the show's over, doesn't mean the drops don't stop. GOTY award winner Baldur's Gate 3 stealthily dropped for Xbox Series X|S after the show ended. Man, imagine if they hadn't won? That would've been awkward.

Those are all the big highlights from The Game Awards 2023. Let us kn??ow what some of your favorites were down below!
