So we haven't done one of our "where is our review" posts in a while, because frankly, we generally get copies of AAA games on time. Although there have been bumps in the road every so often, most gaming publishers want people to try out their games early, from the press to content creators, to any number of other fo??lks in this modern media landscape.

So why does no one seem to have Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League? I don't really need to spell it out, but just in case: consider waiting on revie??ws for this one (from who??ever you get your opinions from).

The lack of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League codes is not only worrying, but strange

In the weeks leading up to the game's February 2, 2024 release date (hey, that's soon!), we've heard more and more about how press outlets are not getting code. We typically have issues with sorting WB due to our historical criticism of the publisher's handling of...well, you name it...but it seems like every other major outlet also does not have access t??o the game in any capacity.

IGN's Destin Legar?ie even shared his frustrations this ??past weekend, noting that his negative preview (you and practically everyone else's!) could have led to a lack of access, but it goes deeper than that. Legarie contends that the game's sponsored stream over at IGN had major quality control issues (like characters straight-up not showing up in cutscenes), and alleges that community managers (CMs) deleted comments critical of the game. Many of my peers are in the same boat, and no one I personally know has had access to the game prior to the early access launch. We went through a similar process with Gotham Knights.

Well, the worrying was warranted!

So I've described the confusion leading up to launch, but said launch isn't going swimmingly either. The official Suicide Squad game social accounts have shared that "a number of players are currently experiencing an issue" where "full story completion" is granted after logging in. Great start! An emergency maintenance period is already underway, and folks are reporting that even the offline version of the game is impacted.

While we're perfectly content waiting this out and playing the game alongside everyone else, it just goes to show the importance of early access. It allows folks to be the canary in the coal mine, providing a watchdog-esque role so people don't buy a?? $60 (or more) broken pile of code, with context for questions such as "Is there offline play?" and the like.

Naturally, WB will get the game back?? in a workable state (to avoid a lawsuit at the very least), but how workable will it end up being? Stay tuned!

Here they are fighting the Wind Temple boss. And the Water Temple boss. And astonishingly, the Lightning Temple boss. Their goal is to beat the whole game with said Ocarina controller, which subs ?for ??a traditional control method for the Switch.

How are they doing it? As gvmimi notes: "I have a program on my computer that allows me to map different musical notes/frequencies to different inputs." They also pointed out that they've cleared Breath of the Wild wit?h an Ocar??ina, so their determination is now tenfold.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be talked about for years

When I first experienced Tears of the Kingdom in complete isolation during the review period, I knew it was going to be big when it came to showing off emergent gameplay online (bold claim, I know!). There are just so many divergent puzzle solutions that it's a blast to see how someone else handled a problem. In fact, I specifically sought out other people who also cleared a lot of puzzles by throwing a bunch of stuff in a pile until it built a giant contraption. It was straight out of that scene in Home Alone 2 where Marv builds a little structure to help???? him and Harry get out of the basement of Uncle Rob and Aunt Georgette's townhouse.

Where was I? Oh, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is a fun game to both play and watch: which is becomin??g a rarity?? as many other AAA games rely on old open world tropes.

Your Starfield ship might be great, but there isn’t even the slightest possibility that it’s as great as the Planet Express Ship. We can fix that. User SP74 has shown on Reddit the process for creating the ic??onic electric mucus-colored, goldfish-shaped spacecraft.

The Planet Express Ship (sometimes known as Old Bessie) first appeared in the pilot episode of Futurama. It was designed and built by Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth as a replacement for the previous ship piloted by one of his many doomed crews. It is often portrayed as either a technological wonder??ment or a slapdash jalopy, depending on the episode.

The one created by SP74 is a pretty decent likeness. It’s sort of chunkier, less sleek, and it kind of lacks the retro sci-fi fins. I guess it’s the NASA-punk version. But you can definitely tell what it’s supposed to be, and it even ??includes the window placem??ent. You could make some pretty wiz deliveries with that bad girl.

I’ve paid so little attention to Starfield’s build-up to launch tha??t I missed the fact that you could build your own ship. I still haven’t reached the point in the game where it lets me play around with ships, but I’m pretty excited to have the opportunity. I’m sure I’ll make a few butt-ugly ??configurations before finally saying screw it and just building the Planet Express Ship, even if it has a mobility rating of zero. So, thanks SP74, this looks great.

Just a heads up, though, it might be hard to build with an un-modded parts merchant. "It will probably be a huge pain in th??e ass to try and build this in vanilla�? says SP74.

Starfield is available right now for Xbox and PC platforms. There’s a good chance that you’re already playing it, considering it seems like half t??he world is currently ?enraptured.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a massive CRPG that can engross you for hundreds of hours. It’s chock full of adventure,? romance, and creative shenanigans that take multiple playthroughs to experience fully. But what if you’ve got dinner in the microwave and only have a few minutes?

Well, if you’re like Mae or ImTaiyl, you can beat Baldur’s Gate 3 in less than four minutes (not counting loading ti??me) using a technique known as “Shadowboxing.�?/span>

What is Shadowboxing?

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you ca??n typically only throw objects a certain distance from you. If you try to throw an object to an? invalid location, the game simply won’t let you and the object will stay at its original position. However, the game will store the location you tried to move the object to.

Let’s say the object i??s a box tha?t has an opening animation. For some reason, this animation breaks all logic. If you open the box, trigger the animation, and move the box to a valid location, the box will instead?? mov?e to the invalid location you chose earlier.

This is already brimming with possibilities, but how is this relevant to the speedrun? Well, let’s say you want to trigger a cutscene at the end of Act 2 that takes you to one of the game’s endings. You would normally trigger the cutscen?e yourself by walking into it, but walking is slow and boring. Why do that when you can throw the corpse of one of your companions into the cutscene tr??igger? It turns out that a dead companion counts as a valid entity that can trigger the ending cutscene.

Unfortunately for Shadowheart, she is the easiest companion to fi??nd and kill for speedru??nning purposes. The route for the Baldur’s Gate 3 speedrun involves brutally murdering your companion, stuffing her corpse into a box, setting the box on fire, and then launching the box across the map to the end of Act 2. Because the box is on fire, it will break soon after it lands, releasing poo??r Shadowheart’s corpse and activating the cutscene for one of the endings.

The current world record actually uses this tech??nique twice during their run to transport the party to where they need to go. If you’d like to try this for yourself, ImTaiyl has put together a helpful tutorial.

Where do Baldur’s Gate 3 speedruns go from here?

Baldur’s Gate 3 is still a very recent game, and Shadowboxing was only discovered a few days ago. It’s ??hard to imagine the route becoming more optimized than it is now, but there’s still plenty of time to discover new glitches or strategies that can help bring the time even lower. Mae and ImTaiyl are the first speedrunners to break the four-minute barrier, but there will certainly be others as more players perform their own ?runs!

In the meantime, enjoy your microwave dinner and ?marvel at what people can achieve in the time it takes to reheat it.

Realm Reborn Red is old news; I'm after the FFXIV whiskey now. In celebration? of the MMO's 10th anniversary, Square Enix is launching a new line of liquor as part of a collaboratio??n event in Japan.

Thanks to @Aitaikimochi on Twitter, we've got a glimpse at the FFXIV whiskey labels and the starting cities they're repping. Apparently, it comes in three variants with labels for Gridan??ia, Limsa Lominsa, and Ul'dah from Nagahama Distillery.

The Amahagan whiskey collection comes from the Japanese department store Isetan and is one of several items available in its anniversary collection, A Decade's Journey. On September 28, both the Shinjuku location and its online store will sell goodies from its FFXIV anniversary event. Bottles cost $60 USD—easily five times the price of ?my usual ??wine.

For international buyers, yo??u'll have a harder time. Shipping alcohol between borders is a pain, and it looks like Isetan's? international shipping vendor doesn't work in this case. However, you may still have better luck once the event begins with other collaboration goodies. I'm kind of eyeing the Warrior of Darkness shirt myself, and don't laugh at my Mother Crystal earrings.

In 2021, the MMO launched its very own Reaper-themed wine shortly after Endwalker made its debut. As I was reorganizing my Mega Man collection after a move �?which is a perfectly normal thing for a human being to say �?I paused a minute when looking at the Mega Man X series. While the original Blue Bomber made a return to the spotlight in 2018 with Mega Man 11, his edgier successor still hasn't made a come??back in a? mainline game. It's a shame that Capcom hasn't figured out how to do that yet, but in the meantime, the 1993 original still holds up.

Mega Man X rules, that is all

It's incredible how often Mega Man X comes up in regular conversations with my peers (you're talking about retro platformers all the time too, right?). Recently, I gabbed about how I mistook the Armored Core 6 tutorial boss as a classic From Software "you're generally supposed to lose" ?fight �?half-asleep �?trying to accelerate my run-through of the first level. Whelp, the subsequent game over screen was a wake-up call, to say the least!

I was conditioned to look for these types of battles early on in my gaming career through Mega Man X, where you cannot defeat Vile, the intro-level boss. Like a true anime shonen hero that forced failure gives you something to wo?rk toward, and every single weapon you acquire and armor piece you find is an accomplishment. By the end, donned in X's fully upgraded suit, it can feel like you're cheating. The power-progression system was unrivaled at the time, and Capcom manged to do it while creating a world filled with vibrant visuals, tight controls, and sprawling (but not ov?erly big) level designs.

Beyond that clean intro, Mega Man X is nearly spotless. It wasn't just the first time I had seen the phrase "Kuwanger," I was also blown away by the level-based s??cavenger hunt system, which tempted players to find all four subtanks and all eight hea?rt containers like a Siren's song. It wasn't until I started sharing my exploits around the schoolyard that I even learned there was more to discover.

I still feel that rush when playing Mega Man X for the 100th time.

Mega Man X is super easy to play, even now

If I sold you (or you're feeling whimsical and want to play it again), the original Mega Man X is very easy to find. It's not only a part of the Mega Man X Legacy Collection (which is o??n a ton of platforms), it's also very cheap on the secondhand market if you're looking for an SNES copy.

Unlike Mega Man X2 and X3 which can go for $100+ and several hundred dollars respectively, X1 SNES c?opies are roughly $30 on average. Get on it!

When I first saw the "dog" mechanic in Pikmin 4, I was skeptical that it would even work. After playing Pikmin 4, I want the dog modded into every game before it. Yes, that dog, adorably named "Oatchi," is arguably the start of the game. Not only does it look cute: it also heavily factors into the storyline of the fourth main iteration, and i??t's one of the most useful game mechanics I've experienced in a long while.

It took very little time to get acclimated to how the little pup worked, and before long I was riding along with him, sending him on odd jobs while I split up my Pikmin force. Dandori (the art of organization, essentially) is a huge part of the game's philosophy and level design, and Oatchi slots perfectly into that ethos. As someone you're able to independently operate alongside of the different types of Pikmin, it's a blast to discern what jobs he's best for, and what upgrade tracks you want to tackle first. "Build potential" is not something I ever thought I'd be tinkering with in a Pikmin game, but here we are. Did I mention Pikmin 4 rules and you should play it?

I love it when Nintendo gets weird

All of Oatchi's glory is reflected in a new promo titled "Oatchi, the Space Dog of Tomorrow," which you can view below. Expect lots of old-school sci-fi references, not unlike most of Bethesda's Fallout marketing. It's also not a bad way to see what the ga?me actually? entails, and what Oatchi does in-game.

When playing through Pikmin 4, I generally didn't want to stop. The joy of treasure hunting, discovering new ar?eas, and taking breaks to hang out at the home base (or go on Castle Defense-esque night missions) was too enticing: and now its ?existence has spawned a real-life treasure hunter.

A self-described "clay artist with a love of Pikmin," Twitter user ZatchMehr is trying to eventually locate and acquire every in-game Pikmin 4 treasure in real life. They've noted that they started their quest roughly three days after ??the game?? came out, and it's taken them about a month to get this far.

How many treasures do you have?

In terms of the electronic stuff, I own that exact Wavebird, the small Game and Watch portable, the GameCube Wave Race disc, the SNES mouse, the red/blue Switch Joy-Con set, and that blue GBA SP. It was a blast going through Pikmin 4 and pointing at the ?sc??reen like that Leo meme: the idea of collecting Earthly "treasures" during your adventure is genius.

The attention to detail is impressive, as some of these items are exact replicas, and many come as close as humanly possible without resorting to making a Pikmin-specific Etsy store. As for the food items, ZatchMehr explains that "fake fruit comes in clutch," so?? don't worry about it spoiling!

People can't get enough of Yoshi. He's happy, he's an incredibly useful power-up from time to time, and he's cute. What more could you want out of a companion? Well, more official artwork would be a start! New art of the adorable dino popped up on the Nintendo UK Twitter account this?? week, showing off a straw-hat-donning Mario with a yellow Yoshi pal. Nintendo is ca??llin??g it an "Original Mario wallpaper" work, celebrating this very-hot summer of 2023.

We're big Yoshi fans in my household. Not only do we constantly relive games where Yoshi is playable, but we also can't help but smile every time he turns up. I also spent an inordinate amount of time in Yo'ster Isle in Super Mario RPG and will do so yet again when the remake arrives later this year. I'm really feel??ing ?the vibe of this artwork, though my summer experience doesn't look anything like this!

Pikmin 4 is hitting the Switch, and Nintendo is celebrating in all sorts of ways. They've marketed this one more than any other entry before it, and they're not done yet! Hot off of the My Nintendo shop is a new product: shoe charms. This is in addition to the prior sticker reward.

Nintendo usually provides? some stats or info for My Nintendo drops, but not this time! The shoe charms?? are pretty much as advertised: it's a trio of charms that you can put on footwear to stand out, and the set comes in a baggie with three characters (Red, Yellow, and Blue Pikmin). The charms themselves are rubber and have a small latch on the back. They're a bit like Croc's Jibbitz charms. It'll cost you 500 Platinum Points for the privilege, plus shipping. I got them for my daughter!

The other reward is a kitchen towel set for 600 Platinum Points. This one has some info: "Add a touch of Pikmin decor to your home with this microfiber kitchen towel! Decorated with a pat??tern of Red Pikmin, Blue Pik??min, Yellow Pikmin, and Ice Pikmin along with touches of greenery, this absorbent towel makes for an easy and fun way to carry off minor spills." From Software knows what they're doing at this point when it comes to flashy character designs. They've seen the memes, the fanart, and the fanfare from all sorts of creations; with the trend arguably popping off with Solaire of Astora, aka the "Praise the Sun Guy." Well, Elden Ring added a ton of characters to the pile, includ??ing the Turtle Pope.

Yep, toy and statue purveyor Youtooz has an officially licensed plushy on the way of a fan-favorite NPC. Youtooz notes that this particular release is 9 inches tall, and is modeled after Miriel, Pastor of Vows, also known as "the Turtle Pope" from Elden Ring. ??It's priced at $29.99, and it'll ship sometime within a window of September 9 through October 9 (for the US and Canada only).

Uh oh. It looks like CERN may have fired again. We're now in a timeline graced by the existence of Fiddlebert. Of course, you remember Fiddlebert from Pikmin, right? For those that don't; Fiddlebert was supposedly Pikmin 1's second captain. He was "rushed" since he was just a smaller and green version of Olimar. He would sometimes randomly speak another language and was removed from the Wii and Switch ports of the game...at least, that's what folks on the Pikmin subreddit would have you believe.

Pikmin fans are currently debating the existence of the green character. Some claim they certainly remember him from the original Pikmin. But let's be honest here. Fiddlebert is as real as Curious George's tail, Oscar Meyer, and the Monopoly Man's monocle. You know, as real as the cornucopia in the Fruit?? of the Loom logo.

Do you "remember" Fiddlebert?

The creation of Fiddlebert is what happens when a dedicated fan base gets together and wants to pass the time before a highly anticipated game release. We saw a similar situation in the Diablo 4 community. It's honestly great! You have a large group of people all excited for Pikmin 4 and willing to take something silly and run with it. Why you might ask? Because it's fun, it's entertaining, and most importantly it's more Pikmin.

Look, I know the Mandela effect is a real thing. I mean at this point who can argue it? But I have to admit, I don't remember Fiddlebert ever existing. Maybe I just didn't play Pikmin as much as I rem??emb?er, but surely I'd recognize this green Olimar, right?

Pikmin 4 releases ??on Nintendo Switch on July 21. I'm willing to bet Fiddlebe?rt will not make an appearance.

I didn't get it on my first playthrough

Diablo 4 has ??been out for a few weeks, and folks still haven't discovered a possible cow level for it. But weird stuff is popping up, old school Blizzard style.

According to several reports, including a full video from YouTuber An??ActualSadTaco, there is a secret very brief hidden scene at the end of the credits, but it doesn't always pop up. Blizzard creature artist Jamir Blanco sounded off on the frenzy on Twitter, confirming the scene:

"Sounds like some people are finally starting to realize ther??e’s a post-credit cutscene in our game...Not sure why some people aren’t seeing the post-credit shot..will find out for u guys."

Given how many people skip credits (wh??en possible), and how it's not showing up for everyone (myself included), it makes sense why this took a whi?le for the news to become widespread.

AnActualSadTaco has several theories:

"Got this after completing [the] campaign on [my] second character. Went back and checked a random Twitch stream of someone who watched the entire credits their first completion and someone who skipped them, the extra scene didn't seem to pop up for either of them. Friend and I had a small theory that maybe the cutscene would change in someway if you beat more times. Can confirm that was not the case. However, I will note that the character I beat it with this third time had?? skipped the campaign and only beat it via my friend's first time campaign completion. I got the little cutscene again but they did not."

What is the character in the Diablo 4 post-credit scene?

While Lilith is the main star of the game's core campaign, there are multiple expansions in the works for Diablo 4. Fans think the figure in the post-credit scene could be Mephisto, Inarius (demon form), Lucius, or Lilith resurrected (maybe she'll take some of Diablo's power somehow and come back stronger). My take? Blizzard can't resist putting Diablo ba??ck into the fray at some point, possibly via a new host body, or someone embodied with the spirit/soul of Diab?lo in some way.

Either way, we'll likely get more hints on where the story is going through the s??easonal drip-feed model??.

Kickflip your way to the stars

In the run-up to Starfield, many of you will be anticipating the antics you can get up to in Bethesda's space-faring RPG. While it's unlikely that the game will let you "hang ten" (or whatever) while exploring alien worlds, you can still pull some moves with a skat??eboard themed on the game.

Over on the Bethesda website, if you wish to relive those glory days of the Tony Hawk games you can pick up an "aerial skate deck" while you wait for Starfield to come out. Featuring the logo and artwork ins??pired by the upcoming game, the item itself does no?t actually come with wheels. But don't worry. The site says you can still hang it on your wall.

This is just one of many Starfield paraphernalia objects that you can buy (so?? long as it's in stock), such as a journal, "constellation" jacket, desk m?at, and, of course, a mug. If you do want to pick up the skateboard deck, currently priced at $75, you will need to purchase the wheels and grip tape separately, unless you have some spare lying around.

Much of the gaming world is eagerly awaiting the arrival of Starfield. Originally set to release in November 2022, the date was pushed back to sometime in 2023 before a final lau?nch date of September 6 was officially announced by Bethesda.

It represents something a little different for the Elder Scrolls and Fallout studio, so a lot of people are curious to see what Todd Howard and his team have been working on these past few years. Then, and only then, will the studio give news about the whereabouts of TES6. Maybe!

We're still writing about Zelda: Breath of the Wild news on occasion despite the fact that it's over six years old at this point, and Tears of the Kingdom's reach just might outlast it. Amid all of the frank?ly insa?ne devices and creations we'v??e seen the community come up with, this new wave of videos showcases another creative element: music.

How the community is creating music in Tears of the Kingdom

What the community is essentially doing is using stakes and lasers [beam emitters] (or other things) to create musical notes, which are then strung together through specific stake placements and item manipulation. Given how easy it is to head to a Zonai device dispenser??, amass stakes, and save/quit in a field while experimenting, anyone who is willing?? can give it a shot.

People don't like to die in video games �?unless there's a payoff accompanying the inevitable Game Over and loading screens. Some developers know that and went out of thei??r way to create slapstick death situations just to sabotage players in ways they'll hopefully find funny... in retrospect.

Trying to get Lara Croft naked in Tomb Raider 2

Nude Raider is one of the most prevalent myths in gaming history. Yeah, total myth, not worth Googling at work??.

It stems from the wishful thinking that there totally was a way to get Lara Croft to take off all of her clothes during the first game. There wasn't, but developers totally made it a thing for Tomb Raider 2!

They decided to give players a cheat code that would totally make Lara strip naked for no reason. But in reality, this code actually made Lara explode into tiny pieces that would then also explod?e when hitti??ng the floor.

Eating the forbidden fish in Nier: Automata

Nier: Automata puts players in charge of androids so awesomely capable one would think them devoid of weaknesses. They are indeed devoid of serious weaknesses, but they have a really domb one. 

Probably as a way to accommodate for world-saving and alien god-killing capabilities, these android bodies never received ?a digestive system capable of dealing with a threat such as the mackerel. Even though the game states that androids shouldn't try to eat them, it doesn't ever prevent players from trying. Eating the mackerel won't simply hurt the android, it will kill it and bring ??about one of the game's many bad endings.

Shooting the lake in Resident Evil 4

Players should shoot most things in Resident Evil 4, both for the sake of fun and safet??y, but not the lake. Never the lake.

You see, in this lake lives the "Del Lago", which translates to "Of The Lake" �?ugh, that's not a very scary name??, is it? No way the developers will deter anyone from shooting at the fishies with that. It's almost as if they wanted players to mess with the lake just so that they'd get eaten whole by a huge lake creature.

The Scroll of Icarian Flight from Morrowind

When exploring the world of Morrowind on The Elder Scrolls III, players might witness a man plunging from the sky to his death. A strange occurrence, sure, b?ut one that brings free loot, so that mostly evens things out.

Inside the corpse's stash, players will find something called "Scroll of Icarian Flight". Upon ac??tivating the scroll's ability, players will gain 1000 points in acrobatics, meaning that as soon as they press jump, they'll shoot up to the skies. That's really cool, too bad the scroll doesn't also shoot up players' abilities to sustain fall damage. Players will plunge to their death much like the man they had just looted.

That's what you get for stealing from the dead, and also from not knowing your Greek Mythology �?although there are no other signs that Greek Mythology even exists in the world of Morrowind.

Sonic Adventure 2's eternal death loop for pirates

Thought you could take advantage of the Dreamcast's seemingly weak anti-piracy measures to breeze past Sonic Adventure 2 for free? Not so fast.

The most efficient anti-piracy measure might be to just not allow pirates to experience games at? all, but that's far from the funniest-possible idea. The best moment to catch a pirate is just as they think no one can prevent them from taking their treasure home. The developers at Team Sonic knew that. Just as they reach the final stage, people playing pirated copies of the game will witness Dr. Eggman falling through the floor to never return.

This strategy proved a perfect way to get pirates to out themselves. First, they would wonder if they were doing somet?hing?? wrong. Then, they'd ask the internet if the game had any flaws, which would immediately prompt them to get dunked on by everyone for stealing from the poor gold ring-hoarding hedgehog.

?Do you think Liberty City is a fun place? Well, you'd be right provided your idea of fun revolves solely around massacre and mayhem.

If you're the kind of person who'd rather just go to a park and sit on a swing set, then this is not the place for you. Due to either a hilarious coding oversight or a devious trap,?? Liberty City's swing sets will murder whoever gets too close.

Try to sit on one and your character will get catapulted hundreds of feet up ?in the air. These swings are so powerful they can even work on cars.

Max Payne vs Rats

Most gamers would probably agree that Mr. Payne already has enough on his plate, but the developers disagree. In the subway section, if players either decide to or accidentally throw a grenade into a specific hole, the game will respond by having rats kill Max. How do these rats even stand a chance against this painkiller-fed? one-man army? Well, because these rats have guns, t?hat's why.

Best of all is how Max uses his overtly serious noir tone to explain how screwed players are as soon as ??the grenade explodes.

Bring it back, Nintendo

With a full suite of Super Mario Game Boy Advance titles hitting the Nintendo Switch, it's really easy to perk up and go "but what about that [X] other GBA thing I liked?" That system had so many bangers it's nearly impossible to keep track of them all, but one that really wormed its way into my heart forevermore is The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Four Swords: emphasis on the Four Swords bit.

This little sub-franchise ended up having a relatively long (albeit niche) lifespan, as it was brought back in anniversary form on the DS and the 3DS for a limited time. But what about the still-trapped-on-GameCube classic Zelda: Four Swords Adventures? Well, we might be waiting a bit longer for that one, which?? is a shame.

So what's the impetus for all this Four Swords talk (besides, I don't know, a massive Zelda release)?

Well, the Destructoid video team has cooked up a wonderful little retrospective on Four Swords Adventures, and it's definitely worth a watch. I have a lot of personal experience with this oddball project, complete with the full setup of the GameCube hub + Game Boy Advance controllers. At launch, I spent the entire weekend at my friend's house playing it, hosting various other people who dropped in and dropped out as we continued to forge onward. Years later we reunited for Four Swords Anniversary on the DS, and it felt so good.

Given that Four Swords Adventures came out in 2004 and has never seen the light of day on another system; it makes sense that a lot of people likely wouldn't have played it, or only heard its name in whispers. If you can't get a copy of it, at least you can relive those glor??y days by proxy with the video above!

Don??'t blame us, though, as the world of Pokemon really did use to host some of the weirdest glitches in the history of gaming.

The seas of Kanto hid a real Lovecraftian nightmare

There's no better tale of terror set at sea than an encounter with MissingNo. That's not a myste??rious or edgy name the developers came up with for an intentionally mysterious Pokemon, but rather a cry for help from the game itsel?f.

MissingNo. Stands for "missing number", meaning that the game spawns that tetromino-shaped eldritch abomination when it doesn't know what Pokemon to put in front of us. The results of the encounter with th?is anomaly will vary depending on the version of the original game trainers are playing. ?He can either mess up our Pokemon stats for a while or completely ruin our save file. We'd advise players against capturing MissingNo., but if you do, never store it in a computer, as that's logically how he'll take over the world.

The scariest part of it all? MissingNo. doesn't inhabit the far se?as of the Pokemon world. You can find him by the coast of Cinnabar.

The endless sea glitch

Ok, we don't want to sound like total past-our-prime people who exhausted all the "fun" one could possibly have in the past. We're happy to tell younger players that they too can find horrific glitches that might scar them for life. Look no further than Pokemon Legends: Arceus, one of the most recent entries in the franchise. In Arceus, a battle glitch might render players stuck in an?? endless ocean they cannot? escape from.

What kind of?? chemicals are they dis?charging in the seas of the Pokemon world?

Even the TV show was glitched!

We're assuming that since glitches have always been a part of the game series, they had to find their way into the animated series as well. Back in '97, Japanese tv aired an episode called "Dennō Senshi Porygon", which featured a high amount of strobe lighting effects. This annoying-at-best aesthetic choice induced epileptic seizures in hundreds of Japanese kids. The studio immediately pulled the episode, never released it outside of Japan, and made sure they toned down t??he series regarding edgy effects.

We could rescue Mew from the game's digital entrails

Ok,?? enough with the glitches that screw up your day. This is the one when we take the power back.

For several years, Mew inhabited our collective ima?gination as little more than a myth. A playground story people would tell and?? laugh at. A few managed to achieve Mew via Nintendo-sponsored events, but the small pink creature illuded every trainer who tried to catch it in the game.

But it turns out Mew wasn't something we could only get from events or from cutting the tire of some van like that kid in school told you. Getting it from events meant that he always existed inside?? the cartridge since there was no actual way to transfer? new Pokemon into the game back then. This brought players to the realization that we could actually fool the game into spawning it for us to catch. The process is pretty complicated so may Arceus bless whoever discovered it; but it's totally doable.

When trading, we were actually mechanically cloning Pokemon

We have good news for thos?e among you who want more than to just extract certain Pokemon from the game. Why just ha??ve one Pokemon when you can have an army of them? The very first Pokemon games for the Game Boy lied to us when they said we could transfer Pokemon from our game to the game of one of our friends. That's not what the game did. It didn't move data, it copied both Pokemon that players were trying to swap, then, we assume, burned the original ones alive. What a prestige move!

There's a good way to prevent this, however: unplug the link cable mid-transfer. This made sure both players would gain a Pokemon without losing anything. This was only possible fo??r people who owned a link cable, which serves to prove how much of an advantage those who possess the means of Pokeproduction have over the rest of us.

Y can't Sims crawl?

Thanks to a reader, this lengthy thread of Sims 4 fun facts from Twitter user OnlyAbiDoang came across my desk and I couldn't look away. Even if you haven't played The Sims series yet you likely know someone who has: or at least experienced it by osmosis through some sort of weird factoid throughout the years. ?It's that ubiquitous. But I didn't realize just how wacky I could get.

Here are a few choice facts from the thread:

• If you get struck by lightning in The Sims 4: Seasons you either die outright or you can wield the power of electricity like a superhero
• You can spy on the Grim Reaper (yes, Death himself) using a listening bug and hear his conversations
• Normally only child Sim characters can see elaborate imagination sequences playing out, but an adult with the childish trait can secretly view them too
• You can complain about food poisoning and get compensation

The thread goes on for a long while, and it's great "weekend read??ing" material. It's essentially a series of Easter eggs and glitches/exploits, some of which yield some crazy?? results that are hilarious both in and out of context.

Every so often I dive back into The Sims and marvel at how well it's been supported over the years, and how? many quality of life features have been implemented since launch. It doesn't hold my attention as much as a lot of other games, but it's a decent reminder of how great Maxis could be as a studio.

I hope we get nearly as much mileage out of Tears of the Kingdom

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is just a month away, and we're finally moving out of the era of Breath of the Wild dominating the Zelda conversation. Not to say that it'll never return! In fact, I suspect a lot of folks will be comparing and contrasting the two worlds with magnifying glasses, and Breath of the Wild will?? still live on for many years (decades even).

On that note, let's look at this awesome trick shot from Twitter user ambi. One-upping many of the "rising up in the sky" trick shots, ambi uses the Master Cycle Zero to flip up in the air, then blow up three (hurt) Guardians simultaneously. Of course, it even has the killer finisher with the cycle: which is just behind the all??-time greatest anime style finisher of walking away from an explosion.

I'm a huge fan of Master Cycle Zero anything, and thankfully, folks can seemingly create their own vehicles on a whim in Tears of the Kingdom. It's weird to think of how Nintendo will follow up Tears of the Kingdom with DLC: and I hope it's slightly different than how Breath of the Wild was handled. Maybe we'll get a huge proper non-sh??rine/challenge room-centric expansi??on this time?

Let 'em fly

In what is arguably the most important discovery of the recent Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom overview, we learned that Link now has the power to fuse items together. This Dead Rising-esque mechanic seems fairly fluid and extends to multiple objects: not just weaponry. Of course, you can use it to forge new weapons and ammo...like the meat? arrow.

Folks have been talking about raw meat arrows ever since the aforementioned walkthrough hovered over them ever so slightly, and the community has now made that a reality in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Popular Zelda m??odder Waikuteru just put out a new video detailing their meat arrow mod, which...adds meat arrow??s into the game.

Alt?hough you can get the gist in the first few minutes of the video below, Waikuteru walks us through all of the possibilities these new toys can bring to the table.

I'd welcome adding some of Tears of the Kingdom's mechanics back into Breath of the Wild

Adding a rudimentary fusion element into Breath of the Wild seems simple enough: and even if it doesn't have the same fully-featured functionality as Tears of the Kingdom, you're still flinging a meat arrow at an enemy at the end of the day. And based on this mod, they actually seem pretty viable. Plus, ammo is eas??ier to find than ever!

Timely, with the remake around the corner

I would watch pretty much anything Resident Evil 4 adjacent. That world was a whirlwind of action and silliness, and lends itself well to all sorts of mods, parodies, and projects. There's a reason people are still talking about it all these years later, and why it's basically Skyrim-tier in terms of its multiplatform port proliferation. That fan fervor likely led to this new ?delightful LEGO animation from creator Cara Aleatorio, who re-imagined the game's intro sequence.

Simply titled "Resident Evil 4 Animation," we're once again whisked away to the intro a lot of us have experienced 50 times or more since 2005: as Leon Kennedy arrives at the initial village in Spain. He quickly discovers the aggressive inhabitants, and the game never really stops from there on out. According to Cara Aleatorio, the project was made in Blender, with the Mecabrics add-on. It took "??around 3000 images" to finish up the nearly four minute video, and "1-2 months" of work.

It's amazing how burned in my brain this intro is, and how big of a shock it was to see how things were changed (both subtly and not-so-subtly) in the remake. I can't wait to see all of the reactions from first-timers and long-time fans,?? but little things like the tower floor in th??????????????????????????e village square demo collapsing really got me.

Go west, young Sliggoo

If you've ever watched the Pokemon anime, you're probably used to seeing cheeky antics, and more mischievous Pokemon who don't actually want to get crammed into tha?t itty bitty living space trainers call Pokeball??s. But seeing it play out in the heavily orchestrated games is just amazing.

Reddit user sentrous shared a recent anecdote (with video!) on how they attempted to open up their kid's copy of Pokemon Violet to help them fill up their Pokedex. Sweet, right? Well, the Sliggo that popped out, presumably in follow mode, made a run for it. The below video is smile-worthy at minimum,?? as the Sliggo just completely makes a break for it (the trainer looking ominously at us at the end just makes it). Of course they're not ??lost forever (it would be kind of funny it they were), and folks are using this opportunity to talk about the time their personal Pokemon similarly ran off a cliff (and miraculously survived).

A "bounty PVP flag/Ultimate Online" type FFA Pokemon MMO world would be wild to see. Imagine fighting over Pokemon pink slips! It'll be interesting to see how all the Pokemon act in the new iteration of the anime, which is playing out sans Ash. The captain-hat Pikachu is especially intriguing to me, as it'll take me quite a bit of time to get used to a Pikachu in-universe that's not the sweet protagonist Pikachu we've known and loved for years. Maybe there's room for the Scarlet & Violet cast to get a little fiesty!

What will the next few years bring for Nintendo?

As we wait to see what Ninte?ndo has up their? sleeve next in terms of hardware, fans have endlessly created concepts based on that specula?tion. Not only have they come up with mockups for brand new systems; they've also crafted incredible official-looking spino?ffs of existing hardware.

That includes this "Switch Lite OLED" (from Redditor willierthanyou) themed after the upcoming Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Would you buy a Switch Lite OLED?

So far, Nintendo has released a Switch Lite, and a Switch OLED: but not a Switch Lite OLED. There's no such limitations in mockup land though, as this Switch Lite OLED goes with the color scheme from the logo (and the general aesthetic of the Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sheikah tech). The back is adorned with a Triforce symbol, along ??with a cool little neon effect. Since it's a ??Switch Lite, the Joy-Con do not detach.

The same creator also dabbled in a custom Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Joy-Con mockup (as well as a Switch Dock) if you're interested in these designs. More of their designs c?an be found o??n their Instagram account if you dig them!

It's just a matter of time until Nintendo unveils more official creations for all of their AAA games coming this year. For now, we can enjoy some more works from ??the community.

Sorry, "Space Applebee's"

Waking up in the morning to the phrase "help I'm stuck in an Applebee's" would normally be a terrifying prospect: but since it's taking place in-game in High on Life, it's a little less serious.

As pointed out by PCGamesN, some High on Life players seem to be having issues getting stuck in the Space Applebee's location: one of the many absurd parodies the game offers. Normally you're supposed to go inside the Applebee's as part of the critical path storyline (which is normally closed/locked), then leave (with the option to pay your check). But some folks on Steam are reporting that they cannot exit the space, ??and are doomed to an eternity of eating digital jalapeno poppers?? and potato skins.

Here's a great recap of one person's predicament:

"I had just paid the bill in applebees and rescued a human in a cage outside of the store in the ?slums. i jumped into the portal where the humans go and was jetpacking up the ledges above them when i was teleported into applebees with all closed doors and no way out. i have relo?aded save, stuck in applebys [sic] still. Reinstalled, same deal any way to get out of here??"

Not once did I expect to write anything remotely like this in 2022, espe??cially since my nearest Applebee's is abandoned.

This is one of many technical issues with High on Life

Jokes aside, I ran into many technical oddities in High on Life, both before the day one patch during the review period, and after. It really helps that it's a Game Pass game, b??ecause spending $60 on this and having it glitch this badly for some folks wouldn't be great! Hopefully there's a patch on the ??way for the Applebee's fiasco.

The best part of Christmas: waiting for clogged servers!

It's Christmas time, and that means it's the season of giving...and getting! I assume some of you out there are gifting hardware to relatives or immediate family members, and with modern hardware comes a certain degree of responsibility. Yep, updates! This Reddit thread from Letmeplat reminded me of something really important: cons??ider updatin??g your hardware before you gift it.

Often times, Christmas day servers explode with demand

I think it was the 3DS era that I?? started thinking about updating gifts ahead of time. It ha??d gotten to the point where nearly everything needed a hefty amount of firmware updates: on top of game updates. I think the worst experience I've ever had with this was updating my PS3 after a long hiatus. The PSN would take hours to download each update, and would turn around and download an update on top of that update. It was exhausting, and would just leave it running all day.

As an extra tip: if your console comes with a free game like Mario Kart, consider updating that too. Or as a matter of fact, consider updating any game you're gifting. With few exceptions (like The Witcher 3 fitting on one Switch cart), many games require huge updates to even play, which could mean wait times, or bugged out servers preventin?g someone from dow??nloading a crucial day one patch.

Of course, you could also leave it to the giftee to do it, especially if you're aiming to give th??em a sealed copy. It's your choice!

Prepare yourself!

If you played Mega Man X4 sight unseen, the cutscenes will stay with you forever. Like a few of Mega Man 8's anime story videos, this is a collection of some of the wackiest scenes and voice acting in video game history, and that infamy spread far and wide among the Mega Man community. Now, Capcom is leaning into it, like many other brands (Sonic Twitter immediately comes to mind). Further proof of that is this official standee for the "What am I Fighting Forrrrr" moment in Mega Man X4.

This came across our desk thanks to the official Mega Man Twitter account, which announced a new acrylic standee designed by artist Mikoto. You can pre-order it now on the site Yetee for $15, and it's expected to "ship in early December for customers in North America." My Mega Man shelf is completely full, but for all of you w??ho have the space, this could be a funny conversation starter.

Just do it in an app

Back in my day, our 3D Sonic games had Chao Gardens. OK, so maybe it was only really for Sonic Adventure 2, and anyone who was caught in that web at the time just eternally associates Chaos with Sonic (ha). To be fair, they have appeared in various games as mascots of sorts, and as several higher-ups in Sega have pointed out: they are present in spinoffs like Team Sonic Racing. Sadly, Sonic Frontiers continues the trend of not having an in-game Chao Garden. But I think it's time to change that.

I know some of you are probably sighing at the idea of digging up an old 3D Sonic trend, but there's so much potential here. Most people liked the Chao Adventure gimmick with the VMU, right? While not quite a "garden" per se, the idea of getting a whole extra game within a game was mind blowing at the time. I mean, the VMU was way ahead of its time too, but learning that you just bought Sonic Adventure and got a free digital Tamagotchi pet was insane: and part of the reason why the Dreamcast earned its re?putation as a quirky and enduring console. All of that can be done within an app now, which can interact with any given future Sonic entry.

Funnily enough, producer for Sonic Frontiers, Takashi Iizuka, laughed when asked about Chaos earlier this year. Game Informer spoke to him with a "rapid fire" question format, and asked "is there a Chao Garden in the game," he replied firmly with a "no." The next rapid fire question was "are Chaos just extinct at this point?" which he also replied with "no," while laughing. You can find that segment here a?t this timestamp (4:50).

It takes place in a haunted version of the Korok Forest

Famous modder Waikuteru is at it again, this time with a Zelda: Breath of the Wild Halloween "DLC" mod that injects some spookiness into the mix, and adds a ne??w questline and major enemy.

It all starts with a quest called "The Halloween Hunt," which is picked up in the Korok Forest. Apparently the residing Koroks are "in distress," and it's up to you to solve the mystery of the haunted zone and square off against a new foe called the Ghost Rider. If they appear you need to outrun them, or head back to the Korok Fores??t to get them off your tail. When the appear, the screen goes dark purple, and there's a sufficiently scary freak-out sequence.

The gist is that you'll embark upon a journey to collect 30 Cursed Pumpkins, which a friendly Korok named Socki can use to make a stew to dispel the magic therein. You'll don a spooky outfit for the occasion (which is required to avoid the detection of the ??aforementioned monster), and the quest has a 30-minute timer on it. Once you're finished you can take out the Ghos??????????????????????????t Rider once and for all!

As usual, everyone involved (including Waikuteru and their friend Sockpoppet, who worked on custom enemies and items for the mod) is a talented bunch: the Zelda: Breath of the Wild modding community is outstand??ing in t??erms of scope.
