The founders of Moon Studios have allegedly been causing issues for years

Moon Studios, the developer behind the Ori series, is allegedly yet another studio that is rife with mismanagement, according to an in-depth report by GamesBeat. This stands in stark contrast to the content of their award-winning indie-darling games, which has landed the series on a countless number of "wholesome games" lists, and has been described ??as a heali?ng experience to play by some.

The report paints a picture we know al??l too well at this point crunch, emotionally manipulative bosses, and incredibly rude, inappropriate jokes.

Allegedly, most of the issue lies with the two heads of the studio, Thomas Mahler and Gennadiy Korol, who were known among staff to withhold any positive feedback about their work, as well as make inappropriate jokes i??n public work chats, among other things. One Moon developer said, "Were the founders both belligerent? Yes. In my opinion. Was it limited to those two? Yes. Unprofessional on an hourly basis? Yes. Harassing? Yes."

Although Moon had become a big part of the Xbox brand, as the Ori games served as a big draw to a mostly barren exclusives landscape for ??Microsoft, the dysfunction between the two parties had dated back to the start of their partnership, with missed deadlines, disputes over budget, and constant, large-scale changes to the projects cited as a few of the reasons for the tension between Moon and Xbox.

While Xbox will continue to own the Ori IP moving forward, Moon will be working in partnership with Private Divi??son on their next project, which will reportedly be a?n action RPG.

This is only the newest report of mistreatment and abuse in the games industry and unfortunately one of many. Last we heard Activision Blizzard is still being investigated by the state of California, and People Make Games just released an exposé on the famed publisher Annapurna and some of the studios they worked with. Personally, I'm glad that the victims of this abuse are finally starting to see justice, but it seems that we haven'?t even scratched the surface of how dee?p the rot goes in this industry.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

As the saying goes: Where there's a will, there's a wisp. And as the other saying goes: Where there's an Ori, there's excellence.

Maybe neither of those are quite household phrases, but the latter is undeniable. A full five years after Ori and the Blind Forest captured hearts and minds, Ori and the Will of the Wisps did it again... just better

Will of the Wisps is everything you could want from a sequel. It's bigger, it feels more alive, it's more deliberate, it tells a better story (through a minimalist approach to exposition), its action sequences are grander, and it's more refined. It's simply a better game, and it improves on Blind Forest which was already quite excell?ent. Those five years were well-spent.

Moon Studios has certainly proved that it knows how to make one hell of an indie platformer metroidvania. Whatever's next -- and all signs point to the developer taking a break from Ori -- we can probably rest assured knowing it'll be qu??ality and it won't be rushed. ;

If this was Ori's swan song, it was a fantastic way to go out. If more Ori awaits us someday, we'd gladly welcome it. Whichever way it goes, Ori and the Will of the Wisps was absolutely fantastic, and that's why it's our 2020 Xbox? Game of the Year.

The Tree of Life

Moon Studios - the indie outfit behind beautiful platform adventure  Ori and the Will of the Wisps - has announced that it is partnering with charity Rainforest Trust for a short-term driv??e to benefit the preservation of the planet's tropical rainfor??ests.

From now until December 13, Moon Studios will donate 5% of all sales of Ori and the Will of the Wisps on Nintendo Switch to the non-profit organization. In addition, publisher and merchandiser iam8bit will be donating a lump sum of $2?5,000 to the charity, which works to purchase and protect acres upon acres of rainf?orest, as well as the endangered wildlife that resides within.

"iam8bit's very first game as a publisher is Ori and the Will of the Wisps on Nintendo Switch. As a publisher, we considered how best to spend the game's marketing budget, and decided to shake things up to try and make a positive difference with that money," said iam8bit co-owners Jon M. Gibson and Amanda White. "As we've worked with Moon Studios to publish the Ori series on Nintendo Switch, we've been struck by their?? dedication to expressing nature as a living, breathing entity worthy of protection. Following their lead, we wanted to do our part to preserve nature, and are excited to work with the wonderful and dedicated people at Rainforest Trust to do just that."

The 5% donation will be made regardless of whether Ori and the Will of the Wisps is purchased in physical or digital format, provided that the sale is on the Nintendo Switch edition and is made before December 13. The Xbox Series X version touts a wild-sounding '6K Supersampled mode at 60FPS outputting in 4K HDR'

Moon Studios updated Ori and the Will of the Wisps today in preparation for the Xbox Series X/S, and I have a feeling it'll be just the kick in the pants some people needed to check out one of the year's best video games. The t?eam calls it a "huge upgrade" for the new Xbox consoles.?? It's easy to see why.

Xbox Series X can pull off 4K HDR at 120FPS, and there's even a "6K Supersampled mode" that runs at 60FPS. On Xbox Series S, Will of the Wisps offers 1080p HDR at 120FPS and 4K at 60FPS. Beyond that boost, there are extra niceties like faste??r load times, high-fidelity audio, and "instant input response."

For anyone still struggling with lingering bugs or crashes, there are new performance and stability impro?vements "across all Xbox One SKUs," including extra polish "throughout the game experience."

Moon Studios updated the PC version of Will of the Wisps, too. You can dig into more graphics and audio modes (on both the super-high and low end) and benefit from some of those same sta??bility fixes.

Funny enough, I just started playing it this week. The buzz was legit??.

Well alright then!

Oh hey Ori, didn't see you there! I was too busy looking at the recent news article about not expecting m?o??re Microsoft-led games to come to Switch.

As it turns out, Ori 2 was excluded from that whole thing. After the original Ori arrived on Switch, all eyes were on the sequel, and when it might actually hit the Switch. Well, that day is today! You can find it here for $30.

As their "one last thing" announcement in today's Nintendo Direct Mini, Nintendo unveiled that? the sequel is not only hitting Switch eminently, but it's also getting a collector's edition, which you can check out below.

It'll run you $150 and you can find it here. The colle?ctor's edition (and the g??ame) is also available for PC and Xbox One.

'Later this year'

Ori and the Will of the Wisps ruled, but when it ??was released on Xbox One, things were kind of rough visually.

I'm grateful I was able to play it on PC first, but over time, Will of the Wisps was smoothed out more on consoles. That rough landing probably isn't going to happen later this year when the game his Xb?ox One X.

As revealed in the Xbox Games Showcase, Moon Studios is working on a 4K version of Ori for Series X, with a?? "120hz" refresh rate. You can get a look at what's in store for us later this year with the trailer below. Thank goodness for Smart Delivery!

'We don't have anything to share'

Ori and the Will of the Wisps and the original Ori are fantastic games to play in rapid succession.

While that's entirely possible on the PC and Xbox O??ne platform??s, you'll have to adjust a bit if you played the first game on Switch: currently, the sequel is not available on Nintendo's platform. While that could change, developer Moon Studios has nothing to confirm at this time: in fact, they think it'll be downright difficult to get it up and running on Switch.

Speaking to fans via a Reddit AMA, Gennadiy Korol, co-founder of the studio and current lead engineer, noted that they still "love the Switch" (a go-to answer for studios these days), but "don'??t have anything to share" on a Switch port of the se??quel. Korol possible portended how long a theoretical Switch Edition would take though, further explaining that it would be an "extremely difficult port" to run at 60FPS.

Never say never. Plus, if Nintendo ever does announce that long gestating "Switch Pro" project (my money is on next E3 after the PS5 and Series X have been around a bit), it should be a lot easier to manage (unless this is all just a ruse to b?ack up Microsoft's prior statements of cooling off on Switch ports).

Work smarter, not harder

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is an excellent metroidvania. After Blind Forest, there was no doubt that the followup would be quality. However, like any metroidvania, it's most enjoyable when you're most capable. Unlocking new abilities unlocks new locations, and being able t??o quickly zoom around the map and dispatch any threat is the ultimate reward.

A lot of this is found along Ori and the Will of the Wisps' critical path, earning essential abilities to deal with that area's theme. But, there are a couple other ways of bettering Ori. One character sells combat skills, and another sells Spirit Shards and upgrades to those shards. Buying al??l of it is very expensive though. (There's also Lupo, the map salesman, who gives you the option to purchase the locations of all the major collectibles.)

For anyone who wants to make short work of buying all these upgrades, there's a fantastic place to quickly farm all the Spirit Light (Ori and the Will of the Wisps' currency??) needed to nab everything -- provided you have the shards to make i?t worth your time. It's in Baur's Reach, just a freefall away from the area's only fast travel spot. Here's where it is on the map:

And here's what it looks like:

We're goi?ng to kill that troll thing over and over again, because he gives about 1,500 Spirit Light each time and he respawns instantly. This method will literally take you like five minutes to earn an absurd amount of Spirit Light. It makes all the collectible containers hidden around the map seem like a joke.

This is the setup you'll want. First, you should have the Light Burst ability so that you can charge fireballs and throw them to break the troll-thing's shield; this is the ability that's actually earned in Baur's Reach, so finish this area before attempting this. Also, you'll want these Spirit Shards (mine were all upgraded already but yours don't need to be): Bounty (enemies have 70% more life and deal 70% more damage, but drop double Spirit Light), Turmoil (enemies respawn faster), Light Harvest (enemies drop four extra Spirit Light orbs), Spirit Surge (Spirit Light grants bonus damage, ca??ps at 6,000 Spirit Light).

That's all there is to it. The troll guy will constantly respawn and drop well over 1,000 Spirit Light every time you kill him. If you're low on health or energy, just trek back up to the fast travel spot to replenish and save your game. You should be done in a few minutes, which is great because buying everything seems like it'd be a huge end-game grind. As a bonus, you'll pick up the Tools of the Trade, Mad Skills, Shard Hunter, and Shard Specialist&nbs??p;achievements for unlocking and upgrading all abilities and shards.

Now i?f only getting the achievement for beating the whole game without dying were this easy.

Where there's a will...

The cliched "games are art" discussion is bound to cause eye-rolling in 2020, but Ori and the Blind Forest feels like one of those examples that's just unanimously ce????lebrated.

Much like a well-animated Don Bluth film, Ori still holds up today both?? in terms of theme and aesthetic value, and that's to say nothing of the strong platformer foundation that Moon Studios built to hold it all together. It's a masterpi??ece.

And five years later, n??ear??ly to the day, they've done it again.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps review - Destructoid

Ori and the Will of the Wisps (PC [reviewed], Xbox One)
Developer: Moon Studios
Publisher: Xbox Game Studios
Released: March 11, 2020
MSRP: $29.99

The first thing you should know about the sequel is that Moon Studios pretty much dials everything up. Environments no longer contain just shades of beauty, but show a sort of emotional growth for the studio as a whole. Will of the Wisps is more stylized, without fear of delving into more harrowing territory to combat that ever-encroaching idyllic bliss that Ori so effortlessly exhumes.

I mean...just look at any screens for it.

The minimalist tear-jearker of a story is also back, and partly focuses on the relationship between Ori and his owl-friend Ku: an owl that descended from a creature in the first game. This manifests itself both narratively and mechanically, in a way that emphasizes their frien??dship in a meaningful way (a joyride, just aft??er Ku learns to fly, leads them to a new region, the basis for the sequel). Moon really knows how to hit those emotional high notes, and when that score kicks in: oh man! There's also a bit more drama and a few heavier themes to boot, which I won't spoil here.

To its credit, Will of the Wisps immediately tries to differentiate itself from its predecessor in that Ori is no longer mashing buttons to shoot out short-range projectiles. Instead, he's stripped of his powers, Metroid style, and is initially forced to bust up enemies with a melee torch: whi?ch quickly becomes a much more elegant light sword. As a result, the sequel's combat feels a little more deliberate, and at times, tougher.

A lack of a quick dash at the start puts a damper on combat as you're manually maneuvering around attacks instead of comboing in escapes, but Ori&nbs?p;was never really a frame-perfect action game. Once you become more agile things heat up, but not until that point. Still, it's a thrill to hit that perfect ability window right before an enemy comes at you, then dodg??e. That sort of drama wasn't as electric in the original and you can clearly see evolution with the sequel.

Being more keyed into the mechanical aspects of the Ori series extends to the spirit shard system: where players can select up to three abilities (at first; you earn more slots) to augment the latent upgrades (like double jump) Ori acquires during his travels. Instead of just following a skill tree you'll eventually complete, the way you play Ori is?? likely going to be different than the way someone else plays him. Above all, it helps age subsequent playthroughs, and dual-purpose key abilities (like the bow and arrow, which tr??iggers puzzles and roughs up enemies) also nudge players to use skills throughout the game, not just for their niche in-level purpose.

The world feels bigger, with more questgivers, vendors and more outlets to spend currency: includi?ng a really cute village-building minigame. The map is more helpful and highlights nearly everything you need from the get-go to encourage exploration. If you liked the dramatic chase sequences from the original they're back: with new challenges in tow and more garish creatures to run from. These still work incredibly well and lead to some of the best moments in the game.

They will lead to plenty of deaths, however. The whole "save anywhere" gimmick is also mostly gone, replaced with generous checkpoints. It's somehow more forgiving and more demanding, all at once: but with the former favoring exploration, Ori's core strength, it comes out as a net p?ositive. The ability to? skip cutscenes by default in 2020, the era of speedrunning, is a no-brainer.

So here's the bad news: I pla??yed both versions of the game, and encountered framerate issues on my Xbox One X (my PC tests, which are indicative of this review, were cle??aner), but it's a weird situation. Upon first booting up the game I noticed slowdown throughout, as well as framerate drops in a few major areas. After re-booting my machine almost all of that cleared up throughout the rest of my subsequent playthroughs, so it remains to be seen if it's a temporary bug that will pop up for some people.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

W?hile the framerate stabilized, I did still encounter some stuttering (mostly when opening up the map) as well as a missing animation in the final dungeon. None of these issues were game-breaking or impacted my experience in a major way. Moon Studios says there's a day-one patch coming, so hopefully it'll fix any mystery problems.

With the need to go bigger, Ori and the Will of the Wisps loses some of the simplicity and innocence of the original game, but it steps up in turn with bite and refinement. It's the perfect companion to Ori and the Blind Forest, and is an early? defining moment of the?? decade to come.

[This review is based on a retail bui??ld of the game provi?ded by the publisher.]

The game doesn't really tell you

Ori and the Will of the Wisps does things a bit differently when it comes to combat. Unlike the original, the incredibly cute and formidable Ori will not dispatch enemies by way of mashin??g the attack button and throwing out short-ranged little homing missiles. Now, you need to get your h?ands dirty a bit.

This time around, combat is decid?edly melee-focused. Ori will pick up a torch in the early game before swapping to a light sword of sorts, forcing you to get up close and personal throughout th??e course of the game. The thing is, the sword itself has a few tricks up its sleeve that isn't directly communicated through an overt tutorial.

Most notably, you have a downward slash available similar to an old school Zelda game. If you jump up and slice down, you'll trigger a very long range attack that not only allows you to hit enemies below you safely while remaining aerial, but lets you combo right into a double jump to safety. In some cases, enemies wi??ll be staggered by the downward?? thrust.

This maneuver is crucial in the early game when taking on some of the tougher ??bosses or mid-bosses in Ori and the Will of the Wisps, as many of them are extremely aggressive and favor horizontal?? attacks. This way, you can get a few hits in and plan your next move.

Give a Hoot?

Fans of the sublime Ori and the Blind Forest will want to tune into The Game Awards next month, as host Geoff Keighley has revealed that Moon Studios is set to raise the curtain on its equally charming follow up, Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

The sequel, which was first revealed way back at E3 2017, already looks to combine the fantastical, dreamlike imagery of The Blind Forest with its classic metroidvania exploration. Players will once again assume the form of guardian spirit Ori, as they travel beyond the forests of Nibel and into the wider world. Our own Jordan Devore was able to play a build of the game during E3 2018 and was very impressed.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is currently scheduled to release on PC and Xbox One February 11. Tune in to The Game Awards 2019 on December 13 for more information on this endear??ing-looking sequel.

This trailer has me jazzed

Ori and the Will of the Wisps looks like a fantastic sequel to the platforming genius of 2015's Ori and the Blind Forest. This afternoon's trailer at Xbox's E3 press conference showed incredible sequences a?mong some ferocious-looking monsters.

It's going to take some extra time, though. We've been expecting Ori and the Will of the Wisps in 2019, but it has been pushed back ??to next year. Developer Moon Studios ha??s set a release date of February 11, 2020.

It looks like it'll be worth the wait though. And, because this is a first-party Xbox Game??s Studios title, it?'ll be a day-one addition to Xbox Game Pass. Value!

Race ghosts in platforming challenges

The speedrunning community took a liking to Ori and the Blind Forest, and based on how well Ori and the Will of the Wisps is shaping up, I think they're going to hav??e a lot t??o dissect in this sequel.

At gamescom, Moon Studios debuted a new Spirit T??rial mode that'll feel? right at home: it's an asynchronous race against other players' best times.  This footage comes from a relatively early area, Windswept Wastes, but you'll be able to find more Spirit Trials "throughout the world."

More than this neat little side element, I'm just happy to have a chance to highlight the new burrowing ability in Will of the Wisps. It's even more satisfying than it looks, and that's saying somet?hing.

My expectations are now sky high

Microsoft had a fairly stacked E3 press conference with reveals for Devil May Cry 5 and From Software's badass Tenchu-looking action game Sekiro. I'm dying to dig into both! But there's another game that's flying slightly more under the radar than it should be: Ori and the Will of the Wisps. I've played a bit of the Ori and the Blind Forest seq??uel during a pre-E3 event and it j??ust feels phenomenal.

The last game was a wonderful debut for Moon Studios, but the now-50-person team is looking to push things even further with Will of the Wisps. As game director Thomas Mahler puts it:

"When Blind Forest was done, we read through all the message boards and everything, read everything every journalist wrote, and we looked at 'what were the complaints?' T??he goal is: how can we perfect the metroidvania? How can we really push the genre forward?"

At an Xbox showcase event, I was free to roam around the W??indswept Wastes, an area that'll be featured four to five hours into the final ??game. My biggest takeaway was Moon Studios' tweaks to make combat "much more varied," which really showed in my hands-on time.

At any point, I could pull up an ability wheel to pause time and equip/re-map attacks and spells to? different buttons. I started out using a well-rounded sword-like weapon, but quickly became obsessed with a slow but super-damaging hammer and a bow?? that made me feel like a little badass.

The idea is that you can focus on your preferred playstyle and customize Ori to better suit it. Collectible shards are found in the world and earned in side-quests, and they give you more direct control over passive upgrades (such as firing more arrows at once, or dealing and taking extra damage like a glass cannon) than Blind Forest's more rigid ability tree. Sha???????????????????????????rds can even be found "out of order."

The best part of the demo, however, was burrowing. The new ability allows Ori to launch himself in (and out of) the ground and it's tough to put into words how ridiculously fluid it feels to fly through soft soil. Moon Studios' intent is to make all abilities multi-functional in that they serve a purpose for platforming, puzzle solving, and combat. For the la??tter, the burrow move let me dig under shelled enemies and pierce their soft underside, knocking their shells clean off so they'd become vulnerable.

If you struggled in Blind Forest, expect Will of the Wisps to take more of a tough-b?ut-fair approach. "Challenge itself is a good thing," said Mahler. "I think we did one thing really wrong with Blind Forest which was right when you got into the challenge, we saved your game. So when you went back in, you had to complete that challenge." This time around, you'll be free to back out, chill for a bit with side-quests, upgrade your skills, and return for the sequence that's stumping you when yo?u're ready.

"We have sequences in there that ar?e bananas still, absolutely crazy, and we love that, it's cool."

If you've played Blind Forest, you should already expect good things from this follow-up. Now that I've demoed it, I can confidently say that those expectations are well-founded. Assuming the rest of Will of the Wisps is ??this good, it stands a very real chance of becoming an all-time great metroidvania.

I'd expect nothing less after the first game

Ori and the Will of the Wisps is a sight for sore eyes. Microsoft brought a new gameplay trailer for its E3 2018 press conference and I need it to be 2019 already so I?? can play this immediately. For the time being, I'll just have to pause this video ev?ery few seconds and marvel at the art direction. The lighting!

Things seem to start on a light note, but I'm expecting to get emotional again. The trailer mentions seeking help "from discoverabl??e allies on your path to unravel Ori's true destiny."

All that work paid off

The saga of Nintendo versus various fan games has been a hot topic for a lot of people. While Nintendo may hold all the legal rights to own and distribute their IPs, what is the harm in a free fan game floating around? If anything, it builds up interest in the particular series to then have Nintendo go and make an official version, much like what sort of happened with Metroid: Samus Returns and AM2R.

Obviously that story is far more complicated than my condensed version, but its hard to deny that the existence of AM2R got people anxious to see what Nintendo would be doing with Metroid next. It could have also forced Nintendo's hand in starting development on Metroid Prime 4 to satiate fan desires, since Samus Returns has a secret project for a few years.

Sadly, AM2R got wiped out of existence due to a DMCA take down from Nintendo last year. While you can still find it online, if you look in shady places, the question of what that developer was going to do now that his magnum opus was unceremoniously put out to pasture was on a bunch of people's minds. It looks like Moon Studios, the developers behind Ori and the Blind Forest, have brought on the dev to work on Ori's sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

While it may not be with Nintendo and working on Metroid, this conclusion couldn't have been happier. With a lot of fan games, people will spend years of their lives creating a true labor of love that then disappears and erases their legacy. While I doubt we ever would have seen the end of AM2R (since Metroid fan?s are truly starved for anything relating to the franch?ise), at least the dev can go on to professionally work on games.

Hell, maybe Nintendo will wise up and hire him for a potential new 2D Metroid in the future. One can hope.

Don't tear up, don't tear up...

Ori and the Blind Forest was such a treat and, to date, it remains one of my favorite Xbox One games as a beautiful, challenging, and at times emotional metroidvania title. (It's not too late to play it there or on PC. Go go go!). Just hearing the name of the sequel, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, is enough for me.

This detail-drench??ed trailer out of E3 2017 sure is nice, too.

"Embark on an all new adventure to discover the mysteries beyond the forest o?f Nibel, uncover the hidden truths of those lost, and unravel Ori's true destiny."

Will of the Wisps is coming exclusively to Xbox One and Windows 10. No? date yet.
