Overwatch 2 is no stranger to collaborations with some of the most popular anime franchises, including One-Punch Man and Cowboy Bebop. Now, a new crossover is getting fans hyped up, as the game is getting a brand new collab with My Hero Academia

The official Overwatch Twitter account recently debuted a teaser for the upcoming event, with a video showing off many new skins based o??n some of the most popular characters from the manga. Kicking off on October 17 and concluding on October 30, players will be treated to thes??e skins for a limited time.

//twitter.com/PlayOverwatch/status/1839334388183584855

My Hero Academia is coming to Overwatch 2 in October

The teaser features five of the playable heroes in skins?? of some of the most recognizable characters in the anime, including:

  • Tracer as Midoriya Izuku
  • Juno as Uraraka Ochako
  • Kiriko as Himiko Toga
  • Reaper as Tomura Shigaraki
  • Reinhardt as All Might

These skins will be available through the shop during the collaboration period, similar to how previous crossovers have worked in the game. It’s not yet known how much each skin will cost, but as confirmed in the official post by Blizzard, you will be able to buy each l??egendary skin individually or as a set, the Overwatch 2 x My Hero Academia Mega Bundle. This bu??ndle will include additional cosmetics, as well.

If you don’t want to spend any money but still get in on the fun, you can earn five sprays and a charm through regular gameplay. We don’t know the exact requirements for unlocking these yet. However, we do know you wo??n’t need to purchase ?anything, which is always a win.

My Hero Academia officially concluded its manga with Chapter 430 in early August. While the anime hasn’t officially concluded yet, there isn’t any info about a Season 8, so this has left fans with a big void to fill. The collaboration with Overwatch 2 might be able to fill some of it.

Overwatch 2, on the other hand, is still going strong, currently running Season 12 with a World of Warcraft theme. The collaboration will coincide with the release of Season 13, which will run the entire duration of the collab and likely beyond. While we don’t know much about Season 13 yet, the? MHA collaboration is a great piece of news for anime fans and cosmetics completionists.

Overwatch 2 has plenty of great skins on its own, but it’s always great to see the game working with other iconic franchises to?? ?create some truly impressive cosmetics.

Overwatch 2 has a robust ranked system divid??ed into several?? tiers, much like other multiplayer games. Here's how the entire system works.

Overwatch 2 Season 12 i?s here, bringing in the mid-year Rank reset, w??hich means you have to start from scratch and complete the placement matches to unlock the ranks for every role.

All ranks in Overwatch 2

Ranks in Overwatch?? 2 start from Bronze and go all the way up to Top 500. Each skill tier is divided into 5 divisions, with 5 being the lowest and 1 being the?? highest.

Here's a complete breakdown of every rank:

  • Bronze: 5 to 1
  • Silver: 5 to 1
  • Gold: 5 to 1
  • Platinum: 5 to 1
  • Diamond: 5 to 1
  • Master: 5 to 1
  • Grandmaster: 5 to 1
  • Champion: 5 to 1
  • Top 500

Champion, added i??n Season 9, is the last conven?tional rank among all, while Top 500 simply denotes the best players from a particular region. It may include players who are either Champions, Grandmasters, or even Masters in very rare cases.

How does ranked work in OW2?

Overwatch 2 rank modifiers
Screenshot by Destructoid

Cu??rrently, in Season 12, the ranks have been reset which means you have to complete 10 pla??cement matches for all roles to unlock the ranks.

Completing each ranked match affects the Rank Promotion percentage. If you win, the percentage will go up and? if you lose, it will go down. Cert?ain rank modifiers also come into play if you go on a winning or losing streak, which further affects your rank progression. Draws, however, ensure your rank progression remains unchanged.

Here's how the modifiers work:

  • Winning Trend (Green): Bonus for high win rate
  • Losing Trend (Red): Penalty for high loss rate
  • Consolation (Green): You weren’t favored and you lost
  • Reversal (Red): You were favored but you lost
  • Uphill Battle (Green): You weren’t favored but you won
  • Expected (Red): You were favored and you won
  • Calibration (Green and Red): Your rank is uncertain
  • Demotion (Red): You lost a match while in Demotion Protection
  • Demotion Protection: If you lose again you will rank down
  • Wide (Green and Red): Your group is wide so you gained or lost less rank
  • Pressure (Green and Red): You were pushed toward average at a high or low rank

Overwatch 2 ranked rewards

The more you win matches and climb up the ranks, you unlock C?ompetitive Points (CP) which you can use to purchase Golden or J??ade weapon skins.

You have to spend Lega?cy CP to get Golden weapon skins. This happens automatically at the end of a rank year, wh??ere regular CP converts into Legacy CP. To earn Jade weapon skins, however, you must spend regular CP.

  • Platinum: 500 CP

Overwatch 2 ha?s finally transitioned into Season 12 as Blizzard Entertainment brought a ton of new content to dive into. This season is titled New Frontiers and is here to shake the meta with a brand-new Her?o, maps, game modes, and more.

After a 4.2 GB update, it's finally time to try out the new support hero, Juno, and experiment in the Clash game mode. With that said, here's a complete breakdown of everything new in Overwatch 2 Season 12.

What's new in Overwatch 2 New Frontiers?

New Hero: Juno

Overwatch 2 Juno
Screenshot by Destructoid

Juno is the 11th Support hero in Overwatch 2 who provides both healing and packs a hefty punch, simultaneously. According to her backstory, she was sent to Earth from Mars during Project Red Promise?, a secret ini?tiative from Lucheng Interstellar to terraform the planet. If you're wondering what her abilities and weapons are, we've got them sorted for you below:

Weapon

  • Mediblaster (Primary Fire): Burst fire weapon that heals allies and damages enemies.

Abilities

  • Pulsar Torpedoes (Secondary Fire): Once locked on, heals allies over time and damages enemies.
  • Glide Boost (L Shift): Glide horizontally with increased movement speed.
  • Hyper Ring (E): Deploy a ring that increases the movement speed of allies that pass through it.
  • Martian Overboots (Space): This is her passive ability. While airborne, press Space (or other buttons according to the controller you're using) to double jump and hold the button to hover.
  • Orbital Ray (Ultimate): Call down a ray that travels forward, healing allies and increasing their damage.

New core game mode: Clash

Clash is the latest game mode in Overwatch 2, featuring five objectives in total (A through E). Both?? teams must capture each point before the othe?r, and only one objective is active at a time.

The g?ame mode starts with the center objective (C) while the final capture points (A and E) are activated last. Each time you capture an objective, you secure a point. This is applicable ?for objectives B, C, and D.

The final two points (A and E) are divided int??o three Segments, and each captured successfully awards you a point. This means you can earn three points from these two objectives. Check the table below to find the capture time for each? objective:

Objective Capture times for 1 player Capture time for 2 players Capture time for 3 players
C 19.5 seconds 14.6 seconds 11.7 seconds
B, D 20.85 seconds 15.65 seconds 11.85 seconds
A, E 15.75 seconds 12.2 seconds 9.5 seconds

ESL FaceIt Group (EFG) and Blizza?rd Entertainment have announced that the Overwatch Champion??s Series (OWCS) is bringing its World Finals to DreamHack Stockholm 2024. The event will take place between November 22 and 24, 2024, and is the first major in-person event for the esports league in years.

During the OWCS World Finals, eight of the world's best teams will battle it out to see who is the best Overwatch 2 group while fans can enjoy watching the physical event and exploring the lifestyle gaming festival over the course of three days. Of course, there will be much more than the tournament for Overwatch 2 fans to enjoy, with various physical activations to keep fans busy in?? addition to everything Stockholm's first-e??ver DreamHack festival has to offer.

Live Overwatch 2 and a gaming festival

The Overwatch Champions Series has already exceeded our expectations, and we’re excited to cap off the year with our first-ever championship in Europe. Our first OWCS LAN showcased the continued appetite Overwatch 2 fans have for international competition, and we expect that passion and excitement to reach new heights in Stockholm??.

Sean Miller, Director and Head of Overwatch esports at Blizzard Entertainment

The OWCS World Finals at DreamHack 2024 follows an incredibly successful D?reamHack Dallas showing earlier in 2024. The show's seating sold out, and the event racked up over 2.5 million hours watched live, with a concurrent viewer count of almost 130,000 people.

Players who want to compete in ??the World Finals have between now and September 20, 2024, to tighten u?p their teamwork before the Stage 4 open qualifiers begin. The winner of those qualifiers is automatically put forward into the World Finals.

If you're hoping to attend the physical event and watch the OWCS World Finals in person, you can pick up a ticket for DreamHack Stockholm 2024, which includes entry to the tournament. There's ??an add-on when purchasing tickets if you want to buy guaranteed seating at the event.

The final event for any esport is always the most exciting. I've attended one for ALGS and EA Sports FC, and at both the atmosphere was electric. Fans worldwide gather together, online or at the event, to celebrate the game they love and the people who are the best at playing it out of the millions of us who log in every day??.

If you're planning to attend the OWCS World Finals, it sounds like it's worth making a bigger trip of it and seeing as much of Stockholm's first DreamHack festival as possible. There will be plenty of time around each Overwatch 2 match for you to s??ee the gaming activities on offer and enjoy the event to the fullest.

Nearly two years later, Blizzard has stepped forward to addres??s this ongoing debate, and is apparently considering bringing back 6v6 teams for the first time.

A recent Director's Take from OW2 director Aaron Keller dove deep into this topic, discussing why Blizzard shifted from 6v6 to 5v5 and their thoughts on the original team sizes. According to the post, having two tanks, damage dealers, and supp?orts apiece on a team tended to make the matches much slower, with damage characters feeling less impactful and supports focusing solely on healing their two tanks.

"While 6v6 can have high moments, it's also hard to follow," said Keller. "Tracking nine other players is easier than eleven. There are fewer visual effects on screen, especially during big team fights. Overwatch is a pr??etty demanding game and moving to 5v5 made it a bit more cogni?tively manageable."

The post also highlights changes to ??queue times after shifting from 6v6 to 5v5, with the latter significantly reducing how long it takes ??to queue into both competitive and quickplay matches.

Following the explanation behind the original change, Keller says the team is looking to run "a series of events to try out different core team composition formats in Overwatch 2." In short, Blizzard plans to run various tests that include the original 6v6 team sizes to see what the community prefers, and opt??imize technical performance for them.

"We would reflect carefully on the learnings from whatever test we run and explore how to best give players what's being asked for," said Keller. "Whether that’s a world of 5v?5, 6v6 or even both, is for future us to figure out."

As of now, it's unknown when exactly these tests will take place or whether they'll result in 6v6 returning in full. At the very least, it's coming back in some capacity. It remains to be seen whether it becomes the regular way to play Overwatch again.

Today, Blizzard introduced Juno, the next Support Hero joining the ranks of Overwatch 2 ?and you can see what she's about sooner than you think. Juno ??will be playable this weekend, so you can check out her abilities before she arrives in August.

As a Support Hero, Juno can dish ou??t pain and heal it in equal amount. A Martian, she zips around the arena with anti-gravity skates like Shadow the Hedgehog and wields just as mean of a gun. Taking a page from Ana's book, it appears Juno's weapon—the Mediblaster—can heal allies and also damage enemies. She's not a sniper, though; it's a burst weapon that looks more akin to an SMG.

Overwatch 2's next support hero is playable this weekend

You'll be able to try out Juno, who becomes available as part of a limit??ed-time hero trial beginning July 19 and ending July 21. It'll be your best shot until she joins the game's roster when Season 12 starts on August 20.

As you can gather from her trailer, Juno is all about speed and vertical momentum. She can leap into the air with a Glide Boost ability that lets her float. It also seems like she can use it to deliver a nasty kick that likely violates the Hippo??cratic Oath. Her Hyper Ring creates a field that gives her and her allies a speed boost when entered. If it stacks with Lucio's speed boost, we're probably looking at a new rush strategy.

There are some damaging m?oves mixed in. Her Pulsar Torpedoes lock onto both allies and enemies alike, delivering healing or damage. Her Ultimate move seems to be the Orbital Ray, which fires a massive beam that slowly sweeps the field boosting all?y damage and healing.

With Overwatch 2 Season 11, Blizzard is continuing to try and lure me back with collaborations that scream my name. The latest trailer showcases what's coming to Overwatch 2 this week, ranging from Super Sentai-inspired content to Transformers.

I'm strong, and I have little time on my plate, so I'll still resist the temptation to yeet hooks once again ?though Blizzard hasn't been making it easy. Somehow I managed to ignore the mind-blowing Cowboy Bebop collaboration (I'm still so tempted). Now that the company is roping in Transformers and Power Rangers (sort of), I'm running low on excuses.

Overwatch 2 Season 11 begins on June 20, and the new trailer show??cases what's involved. It's a short, coming in at 3 minutes, but it's jam-packed with new info covering skins, game modes, and the return of the Pink Mercy charity skin.

Super Mega Ultrawatch buddies arrive in the Overwatch 2 Premium Battle Pass

A new set of Premium Pass skins is arriving in Season 11, inspired by the famed Super Sentai television franchise that couldn't stay locked only to Japan forever. Genji, Cassidy, Sojourn, Ana, and Wrecking Ball can all rock Sentai-themed Ultrawatch Legendary skins. In case you're wondering, yes, it looks like there are Victory Poses inspired by the show, which means you can see Ana bust out a silly pose along with ??her allies.

Naturally, there can't be heroes without villains. Ashe is taking on that role as "Calamity Empress Ashe," who has a skin variant with Rita Repulsa-esque hair horns. Excellent. Zenyatta, Reaper, and R??oadhog join Ashe with Kaiju skin??s.

Here's everything that comes in the Overwatch 2 Se??ason 11 Premium Battle Pass (courtesy of?? Blizzard):

  • Up to 80 Mythic Prisms
  • 5 Legendary Skins
  • Lifeguard Lucio Epic Skin
  • 500 Credits
  • Additional Rewards including Souvenirs, Weapon Charms, Victory Poses, Highlight Intros and Emotes
  • Everything in the Free Battle Pass including two additional Epic skins, 600 Overwatch Coins, an additional 1,500 Credits, and more

Maps, Masteries, and the return of the Pink Mercy charity

A new map enters the rotation in Overwatch 2 Season 11. Runasapi is a push map that takes you to Peru, and will be available in Quick Play and Competitive when the season launches. Another Push Map, Colosseo, is getting a rework in Season 11. Blizzard announced that it removed the glass on the map following player feedback and added "a variety of other chang??es that will allow team fights to take place all over the streets of Rome."

New Hero Mastery missions for Kiriko and Soldier: 76 are coming. According to Blizzard (Solider?), these will be part? of a limited-time event that runs from June 20 to July 9. Playing the ??missions earns rewards and experience points that go toward the Battle Pass.

Pink Mercy's return was announced late last week, but we'll go over it for those who haven't heard. Back in 2018, Blizzard sold a Pink Mercy skin as part of a charity push for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The charity was incredibly successful, raising $12.7 million for the foundation. Pink Mercy has returned along with a new Rose Gold Mercy bundle which are being sold for charity. Bli??zzard will send 100% of? the profits once more to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Blizzard teases a collab between Overwatch 2 and Transformers

If Super Sentai and Cowboy Bebop aren't enough to draw in those dwindling millennial dollars, Blizzard is teasing a Transformers collab for Overwatch 2. It's probably better than a Porsche collab! At the end of the trailer, the Overwatch 2 logo, well, transforms into the Au?tobot insignia ?complete with the ear-tickling audio. The trailer doesn't reveal much beyond the tease, so fans of the famed Hasbro franchise will have to use their imagination. I mean, Wrecking Ball and Bastion are obviously getting skins, right? They already have the transforming part down.

There's plenty more to come in Season 11. Reinhardt is getting a Mythic Bound Demon weapon skin that causes flames to erupt with every slam. We'll also see the return of the Summer Games, along with lifeguard skins for multiple characters. The blog released by Blizzard contains an in-depth rundown of everything you can expect. Overwatch 2 Season 11 begins on Jun?e 20 for those interested in striking goofy pose?s.

A sixth currency is being added to Overwatch 2. Alongside Credits, Coins, League Tokens, Competitive Points, and Legacy Competitive points, we now have Mythic Prisms. Muc??h like the heralding of a new playable hero, Mythic Prisms have joined the game's growing roster of? convoluted currency.

The cost of Mythic Prisms

This new currency is earnable in-game through the $10 Premium track of the Battle Pass and are spent on, predictably, Mythic Skins and their upgrades. You may already know that unlocking a Mythic Skin for a hero is just the start - if?? you want all the?? juicy customizations you'll need to upgrade it as well. Every Mythic Skin has four upgrade levels, and Mythic Prisms translate to these unlocks as follows:

Image via Blizzard Entertainment.

If you play throughout the season, you will earn exactly enough Prisms through the Battle Pass to fully buy and level one Mythic Skin (that being 80 Mythic Prisms, unlocked from Tier 8 - 78). Unlike before, you won't be restricted to whatever Mythic Skin the current season has you unlocking, and you're free to spend these as you choose. The catch, of course, is that if you want more?? than one skin in a season, you're going to have to either wait or fork up a pretty penny. Let's look at the, frankl?y absurd, exchange rates:

Mythic Prisms Retail Price
10 $9.99 USD
50 $39.99 USD
100 $79.99 USD

So, to unlock a fully leveled Mythic Skin, you're looking at spending $79.99 for enough Prisms, or about $64 for the exact amount needed (if we want to get pedantic). That's enough to make the Diablo 4 in-game shop blush. This is all without mentioning that the current Mythic Skin (Mercy, this season), is only available during the season, and will then rotate out for the following two seasons. Even this brand-new system has built in FOMO!

So, you can earn 80 Prisms from the $10 Premium Battle Pass, use them, then do it all again next season. But for those of us who don't play each season and may want to fill out our collection, we're always going to be running behind, earning enough to get one skin per season but never enough to fill out a ??backlog. If you missed out on multiple seasons, your options are to whip out your credit card or kick rocks. They're only cosmetics, sure, but fighting FOMO with finance never feels good.

Venture is the newest character to be added to Overwatch 2 with Season 10. They mark the newest Damage character to be added to the roster, equipped with many short-range options for dealing with enemies. However, you may be curious less about their gameplay and more about their lore and background. Here's everything you need to know about Venture in Overwatch 2, including their nationality, age, voice actor, an??d more.

Where Was Venture Born in Overwatch 2?

Overwatch 2 Venture in Petra
Image via Blizzard Entertainment.

Venture, also known by their full name Sloan Cameron, is the second character to hail from Canada, alongside Sojourn. More specifically, they're a Mexican-Canadian archaeologist and adventurer hailing from Nova Scotia (which as a Canadian feels like a random choice admittedly). As of late, however, Venture's?? been associated with the W??ayfinder Society, an archaeological research group that's been searching for lost artifacts in Petra. Through their travels, they've come into contact with both Overwatch and Talon, though their hostile interactions with Talon speak to whom they'd likely find allegiance.

As per the existing lore, Venture is 26 years old, which?? places them comfortably between characters like Brigitte and Tracer.

Who is Venture's Voice Actor?

Venture is voiced by Valeria Rodriguez, a Mexican voice actor who's had a few other high-profile roles. If you're a big fan of gacha games, you'll know them as the voice actor for Sucrose in Genshin Impact. You may also know them as the voice of Lagoona in Monster High (the G3 variant of their do??ll). Venture is their largest role yet, though they seem to sport a wide range of talents.

As a bonus fact, and a rather morbid one at that, Venture is asked by Lucio in an interaction between the two what their favorite anima??l is. In response, they say they'd wan?t to be eaten alive by Scarabs. Not how I'd want to go out, but to each their own.

Overwatch 2's highly anticipated Season 10 update will be released on April 16 and naturally brings with it some fresh cosmetics and a whole heap of changes.

The biggest highlight of the new patch is the official debut of new Damage character Venture. Their kit is similar to characters like Genji and Tracer in that they're all about getting in, securing a quick pick for their team, and getting out before being focused down. Unlike characters who have been released in the past, however, Venture will be available ?from day one in Competitive Play??.

Speaking of Competitive Play, those in the high ranks can now play with friend??s in much lower ranks thanks to some tweaks to matchmaking. If you and a friend (or friends) have a major skill disparity, you'll be able to queue as a "Wide" group in Competitive, matching with other players that fit into this category. Those within similar skill levels or are playing solo will st?ill end up in matches with people of a similar skill level.

As for events this season, the trial for the brand new Clash mode releases with the launch of Season 10 and run until April 29. This new mode sees five separate points on a large map, with one central point and two on either team's side of the map. Whoever captures the central point first can push onto the next point until either one team has captured five points, or the final point on one team's side of the map has been captured by the enemy. Alongside this Clash tr??ial will be a Mirrorwatch game mode with unique abilities for each hero, though details on this are sparse. Mirrorwatch begins on April 23 and will run until May 13.

The final group of major changes comes through the usual wave of balance changes at the start of each season. However, this season also brings forth a mini-rework for Wrecking Ball. He's now capable of retrac?ting his grapple to be pulled to its origin point, along with giving some of his overshield to his allies, cause who doesn't like spreading the love? Other than Wrecking Ball, numerous other characters such as Junker Queen, Tracer, Illari, and Moira have received smaller tweaks to bring them in line with the other characters. If you ?want the nitty gritty for this patch, read on below.

Overwatch 2 Season 10 patch notes

Limited-Time Mode: Clash Trial

Clash is an upcoming core game mode in Overwatch 2. Teams must battle back and?? forth over 5 capture points, with each captured objective adding a point to the prevailing team’s score. Teams can win in two ways: either by having control of all five objectives at once, o?r by scoring five points total before the other team. Clash will be available as a limited-time trial through April 29.

How Clash is played

  • Five total objectives placed in a linear pattern on a mirrored map.
  • Only one objective is active at a time.
  • Matches start with the center objective active.
  • Players capture an objective by standing on it and filling in a progress bar. Capture progress cannot be made if enemy players are contesting the objective.
  • When a team captures the current objective, they are awarded one point to their total score and a new objective moving forward from the scoring team’s side is activated.
  • Objectives can be secured multiple times. If a team is pushed off an objective and the other team successfully captures it, the next active point will be in the opposite direction.

Win Conditions

Complete one of these conditions to win t??he match:

  • A team has successfully captured five objectives throughout the match to reach a total score of five.
  • Regardless of score, a team manages to take the final objective (A or E) on the opponents?side.

Hanaoka ?New Map

Explore never-before-seen corners of Hanamura in the new map Hanaoka, inspired by the visual themes of the beloved Assault map. Explore the shops and restaurants around town or follow the sc?ent of Sakura trees into the once-proud Shimada castle.

Mythic Hero Skin Updates

Mythic Hero Skins

  • Mythic Hero Skins are now unlocked in the new Mythic Shop in exchange for Mythic Prisms.
  • Mythic Hero Skins are unlocked for 50 Mythic Prisms with a starting set of customizations and then can be leveled up with 10 Mythic Prisms per level. You can unlock the skin and all available customizations for a Mythic Hero Skin for 80 Prisms.

Introducing Mythic Prisms

  • Mythic Prisms can be earned in the Premium Battle Pass and used in the Mythic Shop to purchase the current featured Mythic Hero Skin for the season and select previous Mythic hero skins. You can earn a total of 80 Mythic Prisms when you complete Premium Battle Pass.
  • Earning Mythic Prisms in the Premium Battle Pass is the easiest way to unlock a Mythic Hero Skin and all customizations each season. You can also purchase additional Mythic Prisms in game or in your platform’s store marketplace.

General Updates

Challenges

  • Completing Weekly Challenge milestones will now reward additional Battle Pass XP.
  • Overwatch Coins that were earned in the Weekly Challenges can now be earned in the Battle Pass for all players.
  • Reduced the number of Weekly Challenges.

Developer Comments: The number of Weekly Challenges has grown over time, and we are simplifying what players can aim to accomplish, while also making earning Battle Pass XP more straightforward.

Endorsement Changes

Players who are actioned for disruptive behavior and reduced to Endorsement Level 0 cannot use te??x?t or voice chat features until they return to Endorsement Level 1.

Developer Comments: Since we added the Endorsement system to Overwatch, players who have been actioned because of social reports (Inappropriate Communication, Gameplay Sabotage, etc) have had their Endorsement Level reduced to Level 0. That part of the system isn’t changing, but going forward, Level 0 players will no longer be able to speak in voice channels or type in text chat in most modes.

Hide My Name

  • Updated option in Streamer Protect, found in your Social Options.
  • You are now able to hide your BattleTag from other players in your group and from your friends in the match as well.
  • When enabled, anywhere your BattleTag is displayed to players during a match now displays a random anonymized BattleTag, instead of only to the player with the “Hide My Name?setting visibly enabled.

Developer Comments: “The “Hide My Name?setting in the Social Options now displays a random anonymized Battle Tag to all players in a match, instead of only to the player with the “Hide My Name?setting enabled??. New settings have been added to “Hide My Name From Friends?and “Hide My Name From Group.?Of these two settings, “Hide My Name From Friends?takes priority when group members are also friends. A large list of hand-crafted BattleTags have been created to support this featur?e. Could it contain easter eggs or silly references??/em>

Progression

  • Added progression badges/sub-badges and rewards for Venture. Rewards can be found in Hero Challenges.

Leaver Penalties

Two new thresholds for Unranke???d Leave Penalties have been added:

  • Leaving two out of 20 games will result in a 5-minute suspension from queuing for most modes.
  • 10 or more out of 20 games will result in a 48-hour suspension from queuing for most modes.
  • All other threshold tiers are unchanged.

Developer Comments: Overwatch 2 is a competitive game even for Unranked game modes, and the match experience for all remaining players is negatively affected when a player leaves before it is completed. Remember a penalty only applies when you leave games and not when you complete games.

By introducing a lighter 5-minute penalty, we aim to discourage players from deliberately leaving games they don’t want to play, while not impacting those who may have a technical issue or an urgent need to step away from the game which they can resolve by the time the queue suspension is finished. The larger 48-hour suspension aims to target a very small portion of players who are aggressively leaving games.

Leaving 10 games in Co?mpetitive P?lay will now result in a season ban regardless of the number of games completed.

  • Players can still get banned from Competitive Play in as few as 5 games if they leave very consistently and don’t complete enough games to get back into good standing.

Games completed in Competitive Play no?w count toward the 20-game window of the Unranked Leaver Penalty.

Developer Comments: We already suspend players who leave a Competitive and increase penalties up to a season ban for leaving games frequently, but players can work their way back into good standing if they complete several matches. However, this new rule will stop players from gaming the system over time.

Competitive Updates

Competitive Role-Specific Titles

  • End-of-season titles for Competitive Role Queue now include the role the rank was achieved in.
  • Examples include Champion Tank, Champion Support, Champion Damage, and Open Queue Champion.

Competitive Progress

  • Each Role Rank Card now displays the associated Competitive Role-Specific title.
  • Role Rank Cards can now be selected to open the Match History for the selected role.
  • Match history will display the following: Map / Game Mode, Heroes / Role, Date, Score, Results of the match
  • Match History can now be selected to open the Game Report for a match.

Grouping Restrictions

  • All previous Competitive Grouping Restrictions have been removed.
  • All groups in Competitive Play are now classified as Narrow or Wide.
  • Players between Bronze and Diamond must be within five divisions of each other player in their group to be in a Narrow Group.
  • Players at Master must be within three divisions of each other player in their group to be in a Narrow Group.
  • Players at Grandmaster and Champion cannot be in Narrow groups, regardless of how close their ranks are. This restriction ensures that our highest-ranked players have the highest quality Narrow matches.
  • Narrow Groups will always be matched against other Narrow Groups or solo players. If a group has both Wide and Narrow configurations of players, the Narrow configuration will always be prioritized.
  • Any group that does not meet the criteria is considered a Wide Group.
  • Wide Groups of four players may not queue. This restriction exists so that solo players are never required to make a Wide match.
  • Wide Groups have increased queue times and reduced match quality because it’s more difficult to find another group of players with the same ranks in the same roles to match against.
  • The amount a player’s Rank Progress changes after each match is modified by the group’s width.
  • The wider the group is, the less their ranks will change when winning or losing.
  • The higher the rank of the highest-ranked player in a Wide Group, the less the ranks of all players in the group will change when winning or losing.
  • Players will now be informed if the configuration of roles they have selected would result in a Wide Group.
  • The Tier Legend has been updated, and a new banner has been added to explain the rules described above.

Rank Information

  • New Modifier: “Wide”—this modifier reduces changes in Rank Progress when winning or losing matches. The wider your group, the less your Rank Progress will change with each win or loss.
  • The modifier “Volatile?has been renamed to “Demotion.?/li>

  • Arrows displayed under the modifiers have been changed to point from left to right instead of right to left.
  • New Modifier: Demotion Protection
  • This modifier appears on the Rank Progress bar to denote when you did not go down in Skill Division because of a loss. If you lose the next match after, then you are dropped down to the previous Skill Division.
  • Victory and Defeat have been added below the Rank Progress bar where modifiers are displayed.

Golden Weapons

  • Golden weapons can now be purchased with either Legacy Competitive Points or 2024 Competitive Points. You cannot purchase weapons with a combination of both currencies.

New Hero: Venture

  • Venture has been added to the line-up.
  • Venture is immediately available to play in Competitive Play.

Developer Comments: This is a pretty major change from past heroes, but we’ve always wanted to allow new heroes into Competitive when a new season for Overwatch 2 launches. In the past, we wanted to make sure new heroes were free of any bugs or outstanding balance issues, as well as giving players enough time to unlock a hero from the Battle P?ass. Because of the recent hero trial, we’re confident Venture is ready to jump into the action right away?/em>

Tanks

Doomfist

Rocket Punch

  • The empowered punch is no longer consumed when the windup is canceled by using Seismic Slam or Power Block.

Developer Comments: This quality-of-life improvement streamlines the transition between charging up an empowered Rocket Punch and another ability by removing the requirement of pressing the cancel input first.

Junker Queen

Carnage

  • Impact damage increased from 90 to 105.

Reinhardt

Earthshatter

  • Knockdown duration increased from 2.75 to 3 seconds.
  • Shockwave range increased from 20 to 25 meters.

Sigma

Experimental Barrier

  • Movement speed increased from 16.5 to 20 meters per second.

Developer Comments: This change will improve Sigma’s ability to protect allies that are further away from him.

Wrecking Ball

Grappling Claw

  • Hold the jump input while the Grappling Claw is attached to terrain to retract it, pulling yourself towards the anchor point. This action can be rebound in his hero settings.
  • Now has a one second cooldown if Wrecking Ball never reaches ramming speed before canceling the ability. Interrupting him with Hack, Hinder, and stuns will still trigger the full cooldown.
  • The maximum duration timer no longer triggers unless he reaches ramming speed.

Adaptive Shield

  • Can now be reactivated to redistribute up to 300 overhealth to nearby allies, capping at 75 per person.
  • Enemy and ally detection radius increased from 10 to 13 meters.

Minefield

  • Health increased from 50 to 60.

Developer Comments: The general goals here are to add a direct way for Wrecking Ball to support his allies aside from purely enemy team disruption, make the hero more approachable while also adding more avenues for skill expression, and improve quality of life around the grapple.

Damage

Sombra

Virus

Total damage over time decreased from 100 to 90.

Tracer

Recall

  • Cooldown increased from 12 to 13 seconds.

Pulse Bomb

  • Base projectile size decreased from 0.2 to 0.1 meters. The total projectile size is now 0.25 meters.

Developer Comments: There is now more downtime before Tracer can safely reengage after driving her away and Pulse Bomb will require more precision.

Venture

Drill Dash

  • Impact damage decreased from 60 to 40.
  • Damage over time increased from 40 to 60.

Clobber

  • Impact damage decreased from 40 to 30.
  • Damage over time increased from 30 to 40.

Tectonic Shock

  • Vertical knockback decreased by 30%.

Developer Comments: We are redistributing the damage on some of their abilities so that positioning relative to the enemy and tracking a target are more important for dealing maximum damage.

Support

Illari

Solar Rifle

  • Primary fire recovery increased from 0.2 to 0.25 seconds.
  • Secondary fire heal-per-second increased from 105 to 115.

Lúcio

Sonic Amplifier

  • Damage per projectile decreased from 20 to 18.

Every Mercy main wants it, but is Mercy getting a new Mythic skin in Overwatch 2? As we approach the nex??t big seasonal update for Blizzard??'s hero shooter, it's worth a little snooping and speculation on what's to come.

Is Mercy getting a Mythic Skin in Season 10 of Overwatch 2? ?Answered

There’s no denying that Mercy is one of the most popular heroes in Overwatch. In fact, on console, she’s the top pick. And it’s for that reason she’s developed a fanbase that’s absol??utely ravenous for new skins. But will Mercy get ?the Mythic skin for Season 10?

As much as support mains and Mercy lovers might want to see our angelic, overworked doctor at the end of a battle pass, it’s unlikely that Mercy will have a Mythic skin in Season 10. And we can chalk that up to the fact that Moira just ha??d a Mythic skin release in Season 9.

While there’s no official rotation for how? Mythic skins have been revealed, there’s a set order in how Mythic skins have been historically released. A support Mythic ski?n is generally followed by a damage Mythic Skin, then a tank Mythic skin. So, it’s much more likely we’ll see a Mauga Mythic than anything else.

But, you might be wondering, why is there so much hype around Mercy right now in the Overwatch 2 community? The answer is because in the Season 10 trailer, a sneak peek of a new Mercy cosmetic was revealed. Usually, this cameo is reserved for the Mythic skin of the new season. We were only able to see bits of her skin, including her wings, shoulder, and brutal death mask, but this one glimpse has sent the entire?? Mercy community into a tizzy.

It’s likely that this new cosmetic will be something you can either purchase in the shop for real money or unlocked by completing the premium battle pass track. But at least it fits the season 10 battle pass theme of Mirror Universe. As much as I love Mercy, I’ve got my fingers crossed that D.va will see some Mythic love when Overwatch 2’s season 10 releases on A??pril 16.

Season 10 also heralds the release of a new Mythic Shop, so you can put your fear of missing out to bed. But if you’re getting a little fatigued on Overwatch 2, now might be the time to check out some of the best FPS games on the market.

Blizzard is shaking things up in a big with its troubled hero shooter. Starting with Season 10, Overwatch 2 heroes will become free. Yes, all of them, including new heroes in the future. The game will also include alternative ?ways to earn Coins and Mythic Skins.

There's a chance it could be a new dawn for Overwatch 2. With the launch of the maligned sequel, Blizzard made the controversial decision to lock new heroes behind a Battle Pass. Those who opted for a Premium Battle Pass gained access right away. ?But with the release of Season 10 i?n April, every player can use new heroes right out of the gate. All previously released heroes will also be available.

There doesn't seem to be any kind of surprise catch, either. New players still need to jump through the tutorial hoops to unlock the original Overwatch roster. But ?once that's complete, all 39 heroes will be ready for s??ervice.

Blizzard announces free heroes and Mythic Skin changes for Overwatch 2 Season 10

Overwatch 2 heroes going free is surprising news, to be sure, but more changes are coming to Mythic Skins. Blizzard is introducing the Mythic Shop, a place where you can progress toward Mythic Skins. You apparently don't need to work toward unlocking everything for a skin, either. Colors and model variations are among the aspects of the s?kin you can earn. But if you don't want a specific color or model type, you put that progression toward other Mythic Skins. Starting in Season 10, every Mythic Skin from? past seasons will be available in the shop.

Overwatch Coins, the premium currency that longtime fans?? begrudgingly embraced, can now be earned in new ways with Season 10. Coins will be earned in the free and paid Battle Pass tracks, with up to 600 for the taking rather than the ?typical 540.

Blizzard has even more plans for the future of Overwatch 2, of course. The team plans on continuously tweaking gameplay mechanics and twisting every knob and throwing every switch to "give the game a regular heartbeat," according to Game Director Aaron Keller. Will the announcement of free heroes and updates keep the ol' game moving for a while longer? Only time can tell. But I know what?? can help.

Overwatch 2 will get more maps in Seasons 10 and 11

Blizzard is preparing to unleash a new map in Overwatch 2 Season 10. Hanaoka is a map designed specifically with the new Clash mode in mind. Both ?will be ready at the start of Season 10 for a limited-time trial.

Though we're far and away from Season 11, Blizzard is teasing a new Push map. Runasapi will send players to Peru. Blizzard also announced that some maps are getting updated, and those include Dorado, Numbani, Havana, and Circuit Royale. Colosseo is getting reworked for Overwatch 2 Season 11.

Look, I'm a simple dude. I just want fun and cool stuff. And it looks like Overwatch 2 is getting just that with a Cowboy Bebop collaboration event. The event starts March 12 and features skins, emotes, and more from the space bounty hunter anime. Music from the series will be featured in-game as well. The below trailer is all it took for me to click the Install button for Overwatch 2 on my Battle.net launcher for the ??first time in over a year.

//youtu.be/uS480mqndzQ

I'll admit, I didn't see this coming. But I'm oh so glad it is. Cowboy Bebop is one of my favorite animes ever. Well, the original, of course, not the live-action Netflix thing. And while I never really considered an Overwatch collab with the ?series, it's actually...quite perfect.

Here are all the confirmed Cowboy Bebop Legendary Skins coming to Overwatch 2 in the collab:

  • Spike Spiegel Cassidy
  • Faye Valentine Ashe
  • Jet Black Mauga
  • Ed Sombra
  • Ein Wreckingball

The Ein ??Wreckinball skin will be available to ?all players for free.

I didn't see myself reinstalling Overwatch 2, at least not any time soon. So great job Blizzard, you've achieved that. Now don't let me down, let's keep the cool stuff coming. After all, that's all I want with Overwatch 2, is to have a fun time!

The Overwatch 2 and Cowboy Bebop collab event goes live on March 12 on al??l pl??atforms.

Blizzard Entertainment announced it's joining the growing list of games with K-pop crossovers, this time with Overwatch 2.?? The hero shooter? will host its first-ever, in-game musical event in collaboration with popular K-pop girl group Le Sserafim.

The five-member girl group under HYBE consists of Kim Chaewon, Sakura, Huh Yunjin, Kazuha, and Hong Eunchae. The powerhouse girl group debuted in May 2022 with their title track ‘Fearless? S?ince their debut, they’ve taken the K-pop industry by storm as well as the gaming scene.

Le Sserafim’s newest single, ‘Perfect Night,?will be featured in Overwatch 2 via a fun and colorful ??music video. The video is set to air on Thursday, Octob??er 26, at 9 p.m. PDT.

A quick teaser displaying the Le Sserafim members in t??heir own uniquely styled D.VA-inspir?ed headsets dropped on October 17, prior to Blizzard’s announcement.

Overwatch takes a Fortnite approach

Blizzard's new approach is similar to that of Epic Games?Fortnite. The game has had several collaborations and crossovers between K-pop groups, some of which featured BTS and IKON. Those collaborations included emotes and skins for players to sift through. Some of those crossovers also brought the live show experience to a virtual audience, like when Marshmello performed in an in-game Fortnite concert in February 2019.

Alongside Le Sserafim's music video, the Overwatch 2 collab will also include a Le Sse??rafim-inspired game mode for players to enjoy. Legendary hero skins and exclusive in-game items will also be available for players to collect after the event launch. Blizzard says it'll share further details on Monday, October 30 after the event begins. All in-game content will go live on November 1.

Le Sserafim’s work with Blizzard and Overwatch 2 doesn’t stop there, either. The K-pop group will also make an appearance at this year’s BlizzCon on November 4. Following the conclusion of Community Night, Le Sserafim will showcase a special perfo??rmance, including their new single ‘Perfect Night?and several other popular tracks from their previous releases.

Overwatch 2 has been available for a while on multiple platforms, though it was in Early Access. With the Invasion update, the game left early access and offic??ially launched on August 10.

Reception hasn't been particularly good, and the game currently sits with "Overwhelmingly Negative" user reviews on Steam. The main reasons for the review bombing relate to how the free-to-play model w?as implemented, as well as th?e lack of previously promised content.

[caption id="attachment_373661" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Blizzard Entertainment[/caption]

Overwatch 2 has had a less-than-perfect launch

One of the main criticisms Overwatch 2 is facing is that it is far more money-oriented than its predecessor. For example, some Heroes and game modes are locked behind a Battle Pass system. They can be unlocked through normal gameplay, though paying players can simply bypass it all. Some content has also been cut from the game, including the planned PvE Hero Mode.

Explaining why this is the case, Blizzard's Aaron Keller wrote a blog post revealing how plans were made but developers struggled to find their "footing with the Hero Mission experience early on,"  leading to the decision to cut it. The Invasion update does come with PvE Hero missions, but they are locked behin??d the Battle Pass system, leading to further annoyance.

When scrolling through the user reviews, it is easy to see a trend among the complaints. They're su??ccinctly summarized in Steam user Br??aySC's review: "They released Overwatch 2 as a free-to-play business model, which leans more heavily into microtransactions, overpriced skins and predatory beha?viour. To m?ake matters worse, they shut down the first game, making it unplayable for people who purchased it, meaning the player base has to move over to this free-to-play business model to keep playing the game." There are also plenty of mentions of Blizzard's history of workplace sexual harassment allegations in the reviews.

As of August 13, only 9% of the 92,028 reviews are positive, making Overwatch 2 one of the most neg??atively reviewed g?ames on Steam. The negative reviews aren't limited to Valve's store, and players have also been voicing their dissatisfaction on Metacritic where the game sits a user? score of 1.4 as of August 13, indicating "Overwh??elming Dislike."

Things haven't been all bad for Overwatch 2, however. On Metacritic, the critic review score is a respectable 69 as of August 13. It also hit a commendable peak of 75,608 concurrent Steam players on? August 11, indicating that there may still be hope for the colorful FPS.

The veil between launchers thins

Blizzard is bridging the gap and bringing some of its PC games over to Steam. The publisher announced that select games will appear on Valve's launcher, starting with Overwatch 2 hitting Steam on August 10.

The free-to-play team shooter will launch with a few Steam tie-ins. Namely, there will be some Steam Achievements and the ability to invite Steam friends into matches. Players on Steam can also match and play against Battle.net users too, in case you were worried about that. You will, however, still need a Battle.net account to play Overwatch 2.

Overwatch 2's Steam launch also coincides with the release of Invasion, the seasonal update that will add Blizzard's pared-down and reduced PvE plans.

While Overwatch 2 is the start, more games from Blizzard are headed to Valve's storefront. "As far as what’s next for Blizzard on Steam, we’ll be sharing more about potential other games coming to the platform when the time is right," reads a blog post from the company. Obvious hopes would lie in big games like Diablo IV, though I'd love to see some classics come over too?.

Watch over me

The news comes at a tumultuous time for Overwatch 2 in general. Alongside the aforementioned scaled-back PvE plans, the hero shooter is declining. Activision Blizzard's Q2 2023 earnings report says engagement and player investment in Overwatch 2 has declined "sequentially" in the quarter. Its hopes seem to be that the Invasion update will bolster the game.

But on the esports side, the Overwatch League is also headed for a crossroads; teams are set to vote on an updated operating agreement, putting the fate of the league in the team owners' hands. League commissioner told The Verge that Overwatch will remain committed t??o a "competitive ecosystem in 2024 and beyond." But Activision Blizzard is also laying off workers in its esports department, per ?The Verge. We'll see if a seasonal update and Steam launcher appearance can right the ship.

Don't Pay to Play

Gaming can quite quickly become an expensive hobby. The non-stop conga line of fantastic games this year has made it harder than ever to play without hurting your wallet. Not every worthwhile experience has a price tag on it, however. With the following PS5 titles, you'll have a blast without?? spending a cent.

When it comes to free-to-play games, fans of first-person shooters have more than enough to pick from. Apex Legends is a battle-royale style game featuring a cas?t of characters serving as either Recon, Support, Skirmisher, Assault, or Controller. With a good variety of gun??s and maps, it is a title that easily hooks players for hours at a time.

Yet another first-person shooter appears on the list in the form of Destiny 2. It has managed to remain relevant thanks to constant expansions, including Lightfall in 2023. With Sony's acquisition of Bungie, it? appears the franchise will b??e supported for a long time to come.

Much like the aforementioned titles, Sky features a minimalistic style of storytelling along with multiplayer elements implemented in unexpected ways. The popular life simulation game The Sims 4 went free-to-play in 2022, breathing new life into a somewhat dated game. Although the controls on consoles are occasionally awkward, The Sims 4? is definitely worth playing. It has earned its longevity through its expansive gameplay, detailed character crea?tor system, and quirky humor that has characterized the franchise for years.

It's hard to make any free-to-play list without including Fortnite. Over five years after its initial release, it has since grown into a phenomenon encompassing celebrities, music concerts, and various other gaming franchises. Nevertheless, it remains ol' reliable? when it comes to exciting battle royale? gameplay.

The first-person shooter Overwatch 2 is one of the most po??pular games of its type around. Gameplay is fast-paced and fun, with a learning curve that's not too steep. The player base is very active, ensuring you can jump into the action ??at any time.

When it comes to addictive gameplay, it's hard to do better than Rocket League. Released in 2015, it has players playing soccer with rocket-powered vehicles. It has since develope?d a competitive scene, though casual players can stil??l easily join at any time. In 2020, it went free-to-play, opening the game to an even wider audience.

Fall Guys launched in August 2020, and it was an immediate record-breaking hit. Though it may not make as many headlines in 2023, Fall Guys is still a silly battle royale game with an active user base. Much like the show Takeshi's Castle, players are tasked with completing an assortment of? ?games and obstacle courses. Little beans are the competitors, which makes things all the more sillier.

Astro's Playroom is bundled with the PS5, and it f??amiliarizes players with the features of the DualSense, as well as the blinding speed of the console's SSD. It is, without a doubt, a must-play for every PS5 owner, and years later it remains one of the best showcases of the PS5's abilities.

The game features gorgeous visuals that reference many classic PlayStation franchises, and the platforming gameplay is both fun and varied. The only wish now is that the PSVR 2 receives a similar title.

There is a good variety of free-to-play games available on PS5, and they'll satisfy fans of sports games, shooters, and platformers. Upcoming free-to-play games to look out for include the soccer game UFC, as well as the MMORPG Throne and Liberty.

Overwatch 2 hasn't been hitting the same for some

When I covered Overwatch 2 at its "release," I was anxiously waiting for the major PVE element that would eventually come down the pipeline. It sounded absolutely fantastic and would have added a true PVE element to the game, something Overwatch sorely needed for longevity. Sadly, those plans were scrapped, and alth??ough the team is still excited about w??hat they're putting out, it's not the same.

But all that is still a little ways out. For those of you who are still playing, here's what to expect in Season 5.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GGam7tHwts

More modes are booked for Overwatch 2 Season 5 as we wait for the big August 10 update

Dubbed "Questwatch," a new "role-playing campaign" (micro-event) will commence, which allows players to discover the "magical kingdom of Overland." "New chapters" are linked to Season 5 Battle Pass tiers, which is one of the iffiest sentences I've typed since the release of Overwatch 1. You'll also have the opportunity to "defeat the Demon Lo??rd" (Reinhardt) in a new community-created 1v4 mode, which also has "key quests" tied into it.

Here's what those key quests actually do:

"Complete five of the Key Quests and you’ll unlock a treasure chest of 1,500 Currency, which can then be used to unlock ??your favorite past skins from the Hero Gallery. Plus you’ll earn as much as 20,000 XP in the Battle Pass!"

Sounds like a lot of busy work!

Oh, and if you were a big fan of the Summer Games event, it's coming to Overwatch 2 in Season 5. Prop hunt will be a part of the Season 5 festivities too, via a 5v5 elimination mode that will have a "limited-time run" starting on July 25. An epic Ana skin and 50,000 battle pass XP are in it for you ??if you participate.

As for the big story/"campaign" additions, that won't come until August 10.

Mystery Heroes mode will come back in Overwatch 2 Season 5

Just a few months ago, the Overwatch 2 team eliminated the "Mystery Heroes" mode (where players fight in randomized 5??v5 teams) without warning. It was a tone-deaf decision, and it was met with an outcry among the? community.

Thankfully, Blizzard? has confirmed that it w?ill be coming back in Season 5.

Competitive mode is getting revamped a bit

"Team Queue" will be introduced in Season 5, which lets groups of five play in Overwatch 2's "standard role lock ruleset" without the extra team restrictions. Players will be able to "compete and c??limb the ranked ladder together," which is great news for folks who were previously l??ocked out of the festivities.

To go along with those alterations, Mei is getting tweaked a bit, and the team "also made changes to playing against heroes with quick kill potential a little more fair to play against including Cassidy, Hanzo, and Widowmaker." The Overwatch 2 team has provided their t??houghts on the changes ??here.

[caption id="attachment_386269" align="alignnone" width="640"]Overwatch 2 Season 5 first look at skins Image via Activision Blizzard[/caption]

Weekly Challenges won't use a FOMO system starting in Season 5

Every publisher has a different strategy for rolling out weekly challenges. Some of them allow players to "bank" weekly challenges throughout an entire season, so you don't have FOMO (fear of missing out) knocking on your door). Some publishers force you to finish them week to week, ensuring that players log in and engage with a limited amount of titles for key progression. Some oscillate between both (as Fortnite has done in the past).

But for Overwatch 2 Season 5, "any weekly challenges that are not completed ?by the time the reset hits will simply roll its progress over to your next week." The team uses the phrase "starting in Season 5," so hopefully this is a permanent change.

The Overwatch 2 team is taking PvE in a seasonal direction

Blizzard is changing its plans for the long-awaited Overwatch 2 PvE mode. In a developer update today, the company confirms that it's scrapping its original plans for the mode, pivoting its PvE side into the seasonal content? structure of the game.

Back in 2019, Blizzard Entertainment officially unveiled Overwatch 2, a follow-up to its 2016 hero shooter. Alongside updat??es to the PvP multiplayer side, there was a PvE mode shown off. Players would choose a hero, squad up, and tackle missions where they could level up talents and maintain some level of long-term progress.

This mode felt like a big reason for the "2" in Overwatch 2, but it eventually fell by the wayside. Overwatch 2 launched last year without its new PvE mode, and the question of wh?en it would arrive has floated around until now.

In today's Overwatch 2 Dev Chat, executive producer Jared Neuss says it seemed like there was "no en??d in sight" and the team faced a difficult choice: leaving the original vision for the PvE mode behind.

"With everything we've learned about what it takes to opera?te this game at the level that you deserve, it's clear that we can't deliver on that original vision of PvE that was shown in 2019," said Neuss. "What that means is that we won't be delivering that dedicated hero mode, the talent trees, that long-term power progression. Those things just aren't in our plans anymore."

Neuss says it's "been difficult" for the team, as many "pour?ed their heart and sou?l" into the mode.

PvE goes seasonal

There are still plans for som??e amount of? PvE, though, as game director Aaron Keller outlines.

"Going forward ??though, rather than doing a big, one-time PvE release, and rather than pouring all of our efforts into these singular releases, we're planning to make co-op gameplay and co-op experiences just part of our regular live roadmap," said Keller. "So we want you to be able ?to experience it more often, and with more variety than we had originally announced.

"We're going to be releasing our first major story-based event, featuring a new set of missions, and it'll kick off a brand new story arc for Overwatch," Keller continues. "And beyond that, we have a lot more co-op features planned. Some canon, and some very-not canon. We just want to give ourselves flexibility to explore the universe of Overwatch and its cast of heroes and villains, as?? well as jus?t try new things. We're going to continue to find the most exciting ways of bringing new experiences to the running game on a frequent and consistent basis."

In an interview with GameSpot, Keller elaborates on some of these plans. The Overwatch 2 team plans to roll out story content starting in Season 6 (we're currently on Season 4, heading into 5) with the "start" of a big? narrative. ??The team is also planning for multiple cinematics to arrive this year, either setting up the story for Season 6 or to "further some of those characters" that they're working on.

The road ahead for Overwatch 2

Blizzard outlined a roadmap for the year ahead, with new limited-time events, heroes, maps, and more. According to Blizzard, the PvE Story Missions will have in-game cinematics that "push the narrative arc of Overwatch forward" for the first time since the original Overwatch's release.

[caption id="attachment_379943" align="alignnone" width="640"] Graphic via Blizzard[/caption]

While it sounds like pieces of what was developed for PvE will still be incorporated back into Overwatch 2 and its new designs for co-op, it's hard not to be disappointed in this. Overwatch 2 has had PvE events before. The hope for Overwatch 2's new PvE mode was that might take those ideas forward and expand them alongside its story. With this change, we're still getting some movement on the narrative front, but the 2019 vision of talents and Her?o Missions are not coming along for the ride.

Overwatch 2 Sea??son 6 and its new vision for PvE will go live later this summer.

Genji or Mercy?

For the first time ever, Blizzard has introduced a new and interactive experience to the world of Overwatch in the form of Loverwatch - Love Never Dies. This strictly non-canonical dating simulator is completely safe for work, unlike many fan creations in the Overwatch universe, and allows the player to interact with either Genji or Mei on romantic occasions set in various recognizable Overwatch map locations.

As a reward for completing the game, exclusive titles and in-game cosmetics will be granted depending on ??which options you choose. Up for grabs are the Hanzo Cupid's Kiss highlight introduction and cute titles which will automatically be applied to players' accounts. There are plenty of hidden Easter eggs, inside jokes, and a secret ending to discover, and finding all of them won't happen in just one playthrough.

Players can launch Loverwatch via the official website and it's suitable for most major desktop web browsers but unfortunately won't work on mobile or non-desktop, web-based browsers. Playing through ??the storyline and choosing ??the correct answers will result in being able to choose whether you'd like to be your chosen character's friend or partner. Making bad selections will remove this option.

How to unlock the secret ending in Loverwatch

[caption id="attachment_363647" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Play through the game twice and make it to the "good" ending by selecting favorable responses to Genji and Mercy's questions and you'll be able to begin a third new game, this time romancing Cupid Hanzo, who insists that he is not in fact Hanzo and stresses that this absolutely is not canon, and players should not go updating Overwatch wiki pages. Okay then.

Compared to Mercy and Genji, Hanzo's dating storyline is short and sweet. There is one question respo?nse that changes the overall outcome, but achieving the good ending by telling him that he was your soulmate al??l along will also reward an additional Cupid's Arrow icon in-game.

How to redeem Loverwatch rewards

[caption id="attachment_363646" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

After earning all potential in-game rewards, fans might be wondering how to get these added to their Overwatch 2 accounts. Unlocking the good endings for Mercy, Genji, and Hanzo will gift the maximum rewards including player icons, titles, and highlight introductions, and must be claimed on the Loverwatch official website before they can be used in Overwatch 2.

To claim the in-game rewards, select 'rewards' from the main menu, click the reward you want to claim, and then log in to your Battle.net account. Accept the permissions for sharing Battle.net account ID and BattleTag and choose 'allow'. The in-game rewards will then appear in your Overwatch 2 account within 48 hours.

But why?!

//youtu.be/2hM7qgRxODs

Loverwatch wasn't always a Blizzard project. Back in 2016, it was a fan project created by designer and writer Lucy Morris. It was originally intended to be released for free and remain around indefinitely, whilst the current iteration is only available until February 28. The project originally begin in the period between the Overwatch beta and full release and began w?ith the player visiting HQ and ch?oosing a job that would decide which of three relationship storylines to follow featuring Genji, Mei, or Bastion.

Morris had previously worked with the likes of Ubisoft as well as her own independent projects, and whilst the original iteration of Loverwatch had a fairly big following on the likes of Tumblr, it's unclear whether the game ever made it through the development process as Morris stopped updating the Tumblr page in late 2017. Whilst the concept wasn't a new one (there are many dating simulators for Overwatch perhaps unsurprisingly), this was the biggest at the time. It's unclear whether the new Loverwatch is related to or inspired by this original, but fans can take a look for themselves on the official website until February 28, 2023.

40 million players also confirmed

Blizzard, in addition to reconfirming "over 40 million players" have interacted with Overwatch 2, has also provided details for their "De??fense Matrix Initiative," which is apparently "making strides to push? toward a fairer gaming experience for all players." In short, it's an enhanced anti-cheat system.

Overwatch 2 now has custom game moderation and "disruptive voice chat detection"

This is the big one. The?? workshop system and custom games have been causing issues since launch, and Blizzard is trying to "provide ways to make sure custom games remain safe and enjoyable for all players." Moderation tools w?ill "automatically remove custom games containing inappropriate titles or content," while penalizing accounts that do so.

As for the chat bit, Blizz??ard is implementing voice-to-text transcription and "AI learning" to assist in moderation, which started with Season 2. Blizzard says they've "already begun working to stop disruptive players with applicable chat silencing and account suspensions?? as needed"

A new "streamer protection" system is in place, and there's more of a focus on taking down cheaters

In the ever-growing gaming landscape, considerations for all ty?pes of players are always a concern, including streamers. While Blizzard admits "stream sniping" (the attempt of queuing into a streamer's game to disrupt the stream) is a tough nut to crack, they are trying a few things to mitigate it.  This one is arguably the biggest policy rollout: "Players will now be able to hide their current BattleTag or hide the tags of the other players in the same game they play in on their own game client. This will prevent those who may be watching that player’s live stream from identifying if they’re in the same lobby. Players can also now hide the current queue time and even delay it for a random time before the game actually begins to find a match for that player. Replay Codes can also now be hidden from appearing in the game client. These features will be available starting in Season 3 for all players and can be found i??n the Social options in your settings."

Blizzard also re-ups their commitment to taking down cheaters, noting that "over 50,000 accounts" have been dealt with. When Season 3 hits, they'll be able to more easily identify cheaters with the Defense Matrix Initiative, and controversially, will sanction players who are "grouping up with anyone who uses cheats and hacks." The idea is to take out "players who knowingly group up ?with cheaters," which will involve suspensions (while the player who is directly using cheats will be banned permanently).

We'll see how this one shakes out! Overwatch 2 and Blizzard as a ??whole aren't in the best spot in terms of public perception, so I expect this facet of the initiative will be the toughest to enfor??ce going forward.

No more one-shot kills for Hog mains

Overwatch 2 is a constant balancing act of buffing and nerfing heroes as th??e meta changes, and the character on the chopping block this time around is none other than? everyone's favorite hook-wielding heavyweight, Roadhog. He was known for his hook-shoot-melee combo that could kill players in one shot, which I knew all too well as a Mercy main.

The Overwatch 2 devs said that "these changes aim to reduce the frustration of dying in one shot immediately after being hooked and pulled by Roadhog," while also reassuring players that his hook is still a "powerful utility to forcibly reposition enemy players." The full details of Roadhog's nerf are as follows per the official patch notes:

Chain Hook
  • Impact damage reduced from 30 to 5
  • The enemy final position distance from Roadhog after being pulled increased from 3 to 4 meters
Scrap Gun
  • Damage per pellet reduced from 6.6 to 6
  • Recovery time reduced from 0.85 to 0.8 seconds
  • Reload time reduced from 2 to 1.75 seconds
  • Maximum ammo increased from 5 to 6

//?twitter.com/PlayOverwatch/sta??tus/1617954027987210241

Roadhog isn't the only hero on the Overwatch roster who's getting some changes in this patch, either ?Orisa, Sojourn, and Kiriko are also getting hit with some small nerfs. Orisa's Fortify health bonus is being reduced from 125 to 75, Kiriko's Healing Ofuda recovery time is being increased from 0.85 to 1 second, and Sojourn's Railgun is getting changes yet again so that the primary fire damage is reduced from 10 to 9, and her primary fire will now generate 5 energy per ??hit against an enemy player, rather than energy accumulating from damage done to enemy players.

The patch will also come with a handful of bug fixes, including issues with certain skins and remixing the audio so that enemy footsteps are louder. I know this is a sad day for Roadhog players, but this is just another turn in the cycle that is Overwatch patches. One?? of these days Hog will be up on top again,?? but for now, maybe it's worth trying out a new tank for a bit.

Looking for that mysterious hissing noise

Overwatch 2's Battle For Olympus event is live, and a pantheon of Greek god skins have stormed the store. One skin in part??icular has caused a stir over the last few days though, causing players to question whether they're paying for a disadvantage.

The Medusa skin for Widowmaker is what you'd expect: Overwatch's spider-themed sniper Widowmaker in Medusa garb. She t?akes on a serpentine appearance and, crucially, the locks of her hair become snakes.

These snake hairs aren't just for show; they actually hiss and make noise in-match. Which is a cool feature, that also lacks some subtlety when you might want it. Brian St. Pierre, also known as competitive gamer under the handle "Kephrii", posted about this skin last week.

"The new Medusa skin is so lou?d it actively punishes you for using it,"? Kephrii wrote. "Not only can you not hear enemy footsteps you also can't hide either. The enemy team can hear the snakes/hair on the Medusa skin & pinpoint your location from them."

//twitter.com/Kephrii/status/1610489285739778051

For a sniper who might like to sneak around in the backlines, this obviously isn't ideal. If you were tracked via these sounds and ta??ken out, it'd feel like you paid for a disadvantage, often short-handed to "pay-to-lose"??. But the discussion hasn't been fully against the skin, either.

How not to be heard

As replies to Kephrii point out, Overwatch 2 is a very loud game at its default settings. If you're a Reinhardt player, the cacophony of hammer swings, missile blasts, and voice line quips might drown out a fairly quiet hissing sound.

While you can boost your own sound settings to highlight certain factors, as one of my fellow writers pointed out, there's also the matter of how often this comes up. Audio is a key source of information in any game, but it's a fair argument to ask whether hearing some footsteps is as critical as it might be in other shooters.

Add into the mix that this is an optional skin, one you can pay for but also choose not to use, and it's a bit more complicated. For the high-level players, this might be a dealbreaker for a skin. But for the average Overwatch 2 player? Maybe hearing the snakes hiss is worth a little?? less subtlety.

The Moira mains are delighted, though

Moira used to be one of the most reliable picks among the lineup of Overwatch's healers. Her abilities aren't difficult to use which makes them viable for players of all skill ranges, plus she has great survivability and can deal good damage when it's needed. When Overwatch 2 dropped, however, Moira took on a new life with the five-player teams, and most will say these changes weren't for the best. A whole host of player?s decided they were tired of healing and wanted to use her as a glorified damage dealer. This is where the DPS Moira controversy began, and? it's only snowballed from there.

Fast forward to now, and Blizzard released some new patch notes announcing a buff to the notorious Irish scientist. Now "dealing damage with Biotic Orb now restores a small amount of Biotic Energy," or fo?r laymen like me, when you deal damage with the purple ball it regenerates some of the yellow healing stuff you spray on your teammates. I guess the idea is that ?since players are going full DPS Moira anyway, they might as well make it easier to give your teammates more healing.

//twitter.com/PlayOverwatch?/status/1611142281775484??928

I'm fairly skeptical that this change is going to be good in the long run, but that might be my knee-jerk reaction to hearing about another Moira buff. I want to say I trust that Blizzard knows what they're doing, but as of late my confidence in them has been waning. It'll be a waiting game to see how this buff affects?? play, and whether the devs will have to come back with a nerf in the near future.

These patch notes also detail the new Greek-themed arcade event Battle for Olympus, the new competitive season ??starting on January 10, and other balance changes for characters like Junker Queen, Zarya, and Brigit??te.
