Get some Switch hits for a good deal

The Nintendo eShop has got a sale on, and it's a pretty big one at that. The Big Ol' Super Sale on the eShop has some solid deals for those looking to fill out their Nintendo Switch backlog.

Running now until July 6 at 11:59 p.m. PT, several staples of the Nintendo Switch library are on sale. For Nintendo fans in particular this is a good one, as several N??i?ntendo first-party games are seeing discounts.

Super Mario Odyssey, for example, is up for 30% off. The remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is down 30% as well, as is Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Super Mario Maker 2.

If third-party is more your speed, there are some fairly deep discounts there too. Persona 5 Strikers and No More Heroes 3 are both 50% off, a sizable discount. And Doom Eternal rolls in at a whopping 67% off.

Picks of the Big Ol' Switch Sale

There are some heavy hitters di??scounted in this eShop sale, so it's fairly hard to go wrong. A few of my personal picks from the bunch:

You can find the full lineup of Nintendo Switch deals in the Big Ol' Super Sale here.

Lightning in a Bottle

When the discussion of beautiful video games is raised, very rarely does the conversation go long without someone mentioning Square Enix's iconic RPG franchise Final Fantasy. And with good cause, as the decades-long adventure franchise has offered fan??s some of the most beautiful a?nd memorable characters and vistas in the artistic media of video games.

Among the many people responsible for these indelible heroes, villains, and worlds is artist Isamu Kamikokuryo, who plied his tried at Square Enix for almost 20 years. In this time, Kamikokuryo worked as a lead artist and artistic director in a slew of Final Fantasy titles, beginning with 2001's Final Fantasy X, through 2017's Final Fantasy XV. Kamikokuryo would then leave Square Enix in 2017 to go freelance, and has since worked with Nintendo on titles such as this year's Paper Mario: The Origami King.

Documentary producer Archipel Caravan has chosen to spotlight Kamikokuryo for the latest episode of its ongoing video series, which focuses on some of the legendary artists, musicians, and designers that have used their skills to create some of the most wonderful and incredibl??e experiences in gaming.

This new episode is the longest in the series to date - running nearly 45 minutes - but offers a contempl??ative look a??t Kamikokuryo, his life, work, and inspirations. It's a really gorgeous piece too, featuring fascinating locations and a very personal atmosphere, as we step inside the mind of one of the most complex and talented artists the industry has ever seen.

You can find the full series of Archipel's documentaries over on its official YouTube channel. Previous episodes feature profiles on Danganronpa's Kazutaka Kodaka, Resident Evil's Shinji Mikami, Yakuza's Toshihiro Nagoshi, and a live performance by Panzer Dragoon composer Saori Kobayashi.

Switch releases make up 50% of Top Ten

Nintendo's super-successful life sim Animal Crossing: New Horizons has returned to the top spot of the UK Charts, over Sony Interactive Entertainment's samurai epic Ghost of Tsushima, which was just one week away from spendin??g its debut month in the premier position.

The spike in Animal Crossing: New Horizons sales was part of a very successful sales week for Nintendo, which saw half of the Top Ten taken up by Switch releases. Following Isabelle and pals in the upper echelon are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at number three, Minecraft at number five, Paper Mario: The Origami King at number seven, with Ring Fit Adventure and 51 Worldwide Games rounding out the?? Top Ten and nine and ten respectively.

Elsewhere in the charts, the only new entry this week was Codemasters' Fast & Furious: Crossroads, which failed to make an impact, debuting at number 17. Of note, Sony Interactive's The Last of Us Part II le?ft the Top ?Ten for the first time since launch, now sitting just outside at number 11.

This one is pretty huge

Paper Mario: The Origami King has been out in the wild fo?r a bit: enough time for folks to spot some progress-hinder??ing bugs.

While a few of them are hard to trigger they do in fact exist; and can gate your progress on the critical path or toward a 100% c??ompletion rating, which?? will unlock a secret ending. As of patch 1.0.1, which was released this week, a few of those have been squashed.

The "main" one that's been making the rounds involves a? location where, if certain conditions were met, you wouldn't be able to re-enter the area. As of patch 1.0.1, you can "proceed normally" even if you've already encountered the bug. Another popular callout involved the game's inability to register a special enemy as "defeated??" in your log book if a party member (AI) finished it off. That's also been fixed.

Finally, some broken hidden Toad locations have been fixed, amid a few rarer progression-halting bugs. I'm keeping things fairly vague, because the ??patch notes below outright spoil a few minor secrets and locations.

Version 1.0.1 [Nintendo]

Ver. 1.0.1

Overall Fixes

  • Fixed an issue in which you would be unable to enter the Spring of Rainbows in Shangri-Spa.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, you will now be able to proceed normally.
  • Fixed an issue in which players were unable to hit the Toad on top of the fountain in Shroom City.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, you will now be able to proceed normally.
  • Fixed an issue where Black Shy Guy would not be registered in the Gallery of the Musée Champignon—even if you have previously defeated one.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, return to Scorching Sandpaper West after the sun has returned and defeat Black Shy Guy once more to add him to your Gallery.
  • Fixed an issue in the Ninja Attraction in which, depending on the state of the player, certain Ninji enemies were undefeatable and halted progression.
Note: If you have already encountered this issue, you will now be able to proceed normally.
  • Fixed an issue in which the game would occasionally hard lock in the Rubber Band boss battle.
  • Fixed an issue in the Battle Lab in which the score would not be properly registered after solving 33 or more lineups in Speed Rings in the Ring Trainer.
Note: Previously registered scores will not change. New scores will be registered correctly after downloading this update data.
  • Fixed an issue in which you could obtain an item from outside of a certain coffin in the Temple of Shrooms. This fix also corrects a related error involving hints from the Love Toad in Toad Town.
Note: If you’ve already obtained the item from outside of the coffin, the Love Toad’s hint error will be resolved.
  • Fixed an issue in Overlook Mountain in which the event of looking up at Overlook Tower would occasionally occur from the bottom of the hill.

Destroy All Humans! beams down into the Top Ten

Sucker Punch's PS4 smash hit Ghost of Tsushima has retained its place atop of the UK Charts, making it a third week at number one for the open-world samurai epic.

Ghost of Tsushima managed to hold off continued sales from Nintendo's Animal Crossing: New Horizons, as well as the launch of THQ Nordic's Destroy All Humans! with the sci-fi remaster debuting at number three. Also appearing in the Top Ten this week is Easy Day Studios' sandbox skating title Skater XL, which finally saw release on PC and consoles after spending an extended period ?of time in Early Access.

Elsewhere in the Top Ten, Koei Tecmo's anime RPG Fairy Tail debuted at number 15, while DotEmu's Streets of Rage 4 made its long-awaited physical release, landing one step ahead at number 14. The brawler sequel has been av??ailable to purchase ??digitally since its launch back in April, thus its physical numbers are understandably lower than expected.

Like magic

In Paper Mario: Origami King, the evil Olly transforms nearly all o??f the Toads in the Kingdom into various objects or creatures: it's your job to save them. Or, forgo that optional collect-a-thon entirely and just save your lo?ved ones. That might be more preferable.

Ei?ther way, the Toads exist and are very much in peril, but Nintendo, at the?? very least, is giving them a second thought with this new origami folding tutorial. What's amazing about this particular video is how meticulous it is. The demonstrator is actually taking a paper Toad, similar to the ones in the game, and folding it into an object that exists in the game.

While people are quick to dismiss the new Paper Mario formula, I think this goes to show that there's still quite a bit of thought that goes into building these worlds. Color Splash was the same way. It'll be very interesting to see if Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have any gas in the tank left for a new gimmick, having already done stickers, color and? origami: t??he latter of which is the best theme yet.

Tom Nook still shifting homes

Sucker Punch's mega-selling PS4 release Ghost of Tsushima has successfully retained the number one spot of the UK Charts. The open-world samurai epic has already broken global release records, selling 2.4 million copies worldwide in just the first three days of release, thereby becoming the PS4'??s fastest-selling, first-party, original IP.

The other major release of this past fortnight - Nintendo's Paper Mario: The Origami King - currently resides at number four, having slipped two places from its launch week standing. Speaking of Nintendo, both Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Ring Fit Adventure saw a sales resurgence, allowing the two Switch titles to climb to number two and number 10 respectively.

With very little on the horizon in terms of big-budg?et, mainstream releases, the UK Chart is likely to stagnate a little throughout August, with consistent sellers simply jockeying for position until September brings about the dawn of the?? lucrative Holiday market.

Paper Mario debuts at Number 2

Sony's Ghost of Tsushima has debuted in the top spot of the UK Charts. The bleak samurai saga sold as much as four times the physical copies as Nintendo's cutesy Switch adventure Paper Mario: The Origami King, which settled in at number two.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, it was still a solid physical launch for yer boy Mario, with The Origami King beating launch sales of 2016's Wii U release Paper Mario: Color Splash and 2012 3DS title Paper Mario: Sticker Star. Last week's number one, Codemasters' F1 2020?, is still enjoying comfortable sales and currently sits at number?? three.

The remainder of the Top Ten is filled out with the usual suspects, as Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part II sits at number five, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto V is at number seven, while Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy refuses to give up the fight, and ??is currently parked at number? nine.

Fold up and roll out

Paper Mario: The Origami King maintains the r??ecent "action-adventure" style of the series, but there are still ??a few tips to keep in mind that will help you get rolling quicker.

Here ar?e a few easy adjustments you can make in the early game!

How to get confetti in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Hit trees for tons of confetti

Although you'll explore a host of biomes in Paper Mario: The Origami King, many of them w??ill h?ave good old fashioned logs to smack.

If you're ever running low on confetti to fill in the world, bash a tree: they often have more confetti to go around than you can carry. It's smart to fully stock up and keep your b?ag full when you can.

Rest on benches: they aren't just scenery

Benches might look innocuous but they're the key to keeping your health topped up without resorting to spending money on HP-restoring mushroom items — so save those for combat use.

Instead, similar to filling up your confetti bag as much as possible, rest at every bench you see when you're not at full health just in case. You never know when a tough fight is around the ?corner.

Go back through areas to get a new perspective

Paper Mario: The Origami King, as Paper Mario ga??mes tend to do, provides multiple perspectives in which to view the predominately flat? game world.

Because of this approach, you'll probably miss a ton of secrets if you don't backtrack through areas after completing them. Since Origami King ?is an open world game, it's e??ven easier to just waltz through places you've been before.

How to turn off motion controls in Paper Mario: The Origami King

You can turn motion controls off

If you really aren't digging?? the motion control system for the 1,000-Fold Arms mechanic that's used to solve many of the game's puzzles, you can head into the options menu and turn motion controls off.

You can pretty much do this as soon as you have control of Mario and gain the a?bility in the intro seq??uence.

Take note of where enemies start in a fight and move them back

A huge part of the com??bat system is moving enemies into straight lines to jump on them with your boots or arranging them in a 2x2 grid so you can hit them with your hammer.

Pay attention to how enemies are arranged at the start of a battle, as their initial pattern could clue you in on what the best mo??ves are to align them correctly. As a tip, like-minded enemies of the same types generally go together in one of the two aforementioned formations.

How to find the Toad Bell in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Buy the Toad Bell early

Very early into The Origami King, you'll come across a shop located right outside of the first mini-dungeon. The NPC there will sell you your first pieces of equipment, one of which is the Toad Bell. This bell will audibly chime and show up on-screen when you're near? a hidden Toad.

Although it's debatable how effective the "more health/time" items are based on your combat prowess, locating more Toads can grant? you access to new shops and nominal? amounts of coins as a reward. Make sure you beef up your ability to find them early so you aren't leaving them behind!

How to pay Toads in Paper Mario: The Origami King

Hold the Y button in combat to pay Toads

Low on health in the m?iddle of combat, or completely st?umped as to how to line everyone up?

Press and hold the Y button to call the Toads for help?. You can "pledge" up to 999 coins per use (a round of combat), which nets you random effects like free ring rotations, free health power-ups, extra damage, or any combination thereof.

Toads are especially e??ffective in boss battles, as they highlight the path that Mario will take when walking along the rings during those special encounters??.

Paper-view

Midway in the series' life cycle, something about Paper Mario just...changed. Most of the RPG pretenses were dropped, morphing the series into a more action-adventure package. People were pissed, but the world kept turnin??g.

No, Nintendo didn't magically change its mind with The Origami King and bring the original formula back but like Color Splash, it's still a fun romp in its own right.

Paper Mario: The Origami King review

"Oh no, he liked Color Splash?!"

Look, I loved Super Mario RPG as much as the next '80s/'90s kid and would enjoy witnessing its legacy carried on into oblivion. But following in the footsteps of the reality of the genre-shift with Sticker Star, Color Splash was a fun little action-adventure that made me smile more than most of the games released in 2016 and Origami King has a very similar vibe to it.

It might have a lot of the series' long-gone RPG elements stripped out, but it has plenty of personality. As expected, the wonderfully art of origami is front and center here. The Mushroom Kingdom (and the outskirts) are taken over by King Olly: a mysterious and powerful new entity that wants to fold everything in his image. Bowser is pissed he isn't the top dog, too; it's a very similar vibe to past RPG Mario games.

Pitting the more fully-formed origami aesthetic against the paper aesthetic is genius, and really helps make Origami King work. Origami as an art form has always fascinated me, as does the zen-like experience of watching someone who is really into it slowly make somethi?ng ??out of nothing. So having a crude paper version of Mario smashing things up in juxtaposition is pretty great.

In Mario's quest to rid the kingdom of the tyrannical Olly, you'll explore a fully open world (no "stage select!") in a very Zelda-like fashion (with shrine and dungeon stand-ins). A lot of the loop is Zelda-like, actually. You won't "level up" traditionally, but you'll earn ??money from fights, which you can use to unlock stat-boosting equipment. You'll also come across life-increasing heart upg?rades in the wild, or you might have a quick encounter with an NPC that ends up becoming a shopkeeper.

Keep in mind, though, Origami King takes a more relaxed approach to everything. Although a scant few interpersonal relationships are at the forefront, the narrative takes a big backseat to silly antics and comedic dialogue. As yo??u roam across this chill world-in-peril you'll patch up its holes with confetti, solve puzzles, and engage in some very light platforming. Even the combat system is reserved.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

This time around battles take place in a ringed arena, with enemies scattered about. Your job is to use a circular or line selection tool to "line up" enemies in either a 2x2 grid or a straight line so you can smash them with your hammer or jump on their heads, respectively. Different enemy types are weaker to specific variations of those two weapons (steel boots will stomp foes with spikes, and so on), which have durability meters and can break. There's also sparing instances of direct combat out in the field with your hammer, and you can give your attacks or defenses an "oomph" to them by pressing a button at the right time: just like Super Mario RPG and its successors.

Throughout my time with Origami King I was back and forth on whether or not I dug the ring system. Sometimes it can feel relaxing and fun, especially when you enter a new area and are asked to "solve" an enemy type. It all funnels into the central puzzle archetype ?of the game. But in areas rife with enemy minions it can feel tiring, especially since you don't get major rewards for your troubles beyond extra gold (which you'll sometimes spend to boost yourself in the middle of a fight).

Bosses are similarly hit and miss. A few (like the one in the Treehouse video recently) are very basic in nature and take little time to solve. Others are more intricate puzzles, with hazards that blow tiles off of the board or create less predictable outcomes with multiple phases. It's par for th??e course for the uneven combat system, but there were very few times where I was either rolling my eyes or huffing for it to be over. At worst, it can be a minor inconvenience when an encounter doesn't click.

Paper Mario: The Origami King

Those moments can also spill over into the core of the game's exploration route. There were times where characters were interacting in such a basic, tutorialized way that I was audibly saying "get on with it!" as I witnessed very slow-moving moments that are in way too many first-party Mario&nb?sp;games. But then a character will say a riotously funny bit of dialogue, ??something interesting will happen, and we'll be on our way.

The creepy and cult-like style of the enemy faction assists with creating an air of intrigue. Olly can be uncharacteristically cruel for a Mario character, and some cast members are not afraid to get weird. While some of the aforementioned faults would sink a lesser team, Intelligent Systems and the writing squad have done a great job of keeping Paper Mario funny and?? fun to play. This is a world worth experiencing.

There's room in my heart for both styles of Paper Mario. The old games still exist and this newer, sometimes thinner formula is fine too. That said, it's possible Nintendo and Intelligent Systems have folded this sub??series every which way they can at this point. I hope the next one is a little more fresh.

'I aim to pick ideas that are understandable all around the world'

Nintendo's Kensuke Tanabe is kind of a legend. He's worked on Super Mario RPG's script, he's been involved in franchises from Donkey Kong Country to Pokemon and he even wrote Link to the Past. Quite the resume!

Although Intelligent Systems is responsible for a large part of recent Paper Mario games, Tanabe and several other developers at Nintendo also pitch in. VGC recently caught up with him to talk Paper Mario, and he provided some extra insight into why the recent games are the way they are, as well as his approach to the humorous tone that entries from Sticker Star on have leaned into.

Speaking to VGC, Tanabe gives us his core philosophy on comedy, explaining: "I don’t use any ideas that go against what’s considered appropriate for the times. I also don’t use ideas that are too much of a twist and so are difficult to understand. Instead, I aim to pick ideas that are understandable all around the world." He says that Miyamoto was a big influence on the team, especially as it pertains to Mario and the angle of? sto?ries that aren't "too complicated."

As for the inherent nature of the new direction of Paper Mario (specifically Origami King), Tanabe notes: "I do think it’s difficult to satisfy certain fans with the adventure game direction if they think of Paper Mario games as simply being RPGs. I hope that everyone will play this game with an open m??i?nd."

He goes on to say: "I do look through the opinions of fans once a game is released. As there are cases where I can’t address those opinions exactly as fans want, I try to challenge myself to other new, fun ideas. What I always keep in mind though is to do as much as I can so that players can enjoy new and unique game experiences. I’m confident that if you play Paper Mario: The Origami King, you&?rsquo;ll understand just how many ideas we’ve managed to pack into one g?ame."

Tanabe also seems incredibly humble, accepting the fate that maybe, his co-creations might not make it into the annals of Nintendo history. He admits that the legacy of "all-time hit" characters isn't up to the development team, and hopes that "fans truly accept" those creations and that Origami King's characters "will stay in players' memories," des??pite the fact that they might end their journey in this solo entry.

Well, there's always assist trophies in whatever the next iteration of Smash Bros. looks like! ?As for me, I'd love to see some of the origami characters?? live on in the future.

Creepy lady!

Methinks there's something wrong here. Through slick deduction skills learned from games like Mario is Missing, I'm able to surmise that all is not ??as it should ??be in the Mushroom Kingdom.

GameXplain uploaded the five-minute intro cinematic to the upcoming Paper Mario: The Origami King and someone has a lot of explaining to do! The Origami Festival is a ghost town and Pri??ncess Peach's castle is a prison. Then Peach come??s stomping out of her lair asking creepy-ass questions like "Shouldn't the Toads be silenced for all of eternity?" and "Will you crease yourself and be reborn?"

We already know the impetus for this adventure: King Olly has some sort of stranglehold on the castle. There's brainwashing at play or someone's in a disguise made of papier-mâché. Eit??her way, sound the alarm! This i?s too culty to be wholesome.

Paper Mario: The Origami King is out on July 17 on Switch. However, we'll find out more tomorrow during a surprise Nintendo Treehouse live stream. In the meantime, here's (mostly) everything we know about Origami King at? this point. Then, in a week or so, we find out whether these folds are gold or tearable.

Interest inCREASING?

May's surprise reveal of Paper Mario: The Origami King was met with some trepidation. Releasing in July, that first two-minute trailer didn't show enough to earn much confidence. Paper Mario missteps like Sticker Star are too fresh in too many minds.

Maybe this six-minute overview will win some hearts. Nintendo covers a lot of ground here, explaining Origami King's exploration, combat, companions, and more.

Let's take stock of everything in bullet points:

  • The impetus for this quest is to find the ends of five streamers (not the Twitch kind) that have stretched out across the land. That is, somehow, how Mario plans to free Princess Peach's castle from King Olly's paper-clad stranglehold.
  • The five streamers correlate to Origami King's five lands. They are: "a forest spring, an autumn mountain, a ninja-filled mansion, an underground sewer system, and a desert oasis."
  • As we learned during the reveal, exploration is driven by unfolding the environment to find new paths and hidden secrets.
  • I love that Toad Tower shooting a laser beam out of its eye at 1:10.
  • At some point, Mario appears on a quiz show in front of an audience of Shy Guys. That's the kind of wholesome creative touch that wins me over.
  • Olivia is Mario's main companion in Origami King. She's King Olly's brother and she's deadset on foiling his plans. Other companions mentioned are: Bobby the amnesiac Bob-omb, Professor Toad who cosplays as Indiana Jones, and Kamek the Koopa wizard.
  • Finally, a proper combat overview. All battles take place on a grid of rings, with enemies each stationed in their own square. Before the fight starts, Mario has to rotate the rings so as to best align the enemies for efficient attacks. This stage is timed and is also limited to a set number of rotations. (Curiously, there's also a "Buy Time" mechanic.)
  • The grouping of enemies will inform the kind of attacks you want to pick. For instance, a line of Goombas would best be taken out with a Super Jump that bounces straight on each one's head. But, a square grouping could be walloped with a hammer that doesn't reach as far but has a wider radius. Fireballs, Raccoon Tail, and POW Block are a few more Mario-centric attacks that are namedropped.
  • Maybe the most ridiculous and incredible inclusion of all, boss fights are against everyday office supplies. Cower in fear at 12 Colored Pencils. Tremble at the very sight of the might Tape Dispenser. I'll be very disappointed if Milton's Swingline doesn't make a cameo.
  • The ring-based combat system plays a different role in boss battles. Rather than lining up the enemy, it's used for Mario to navigate around the boss' attacks, putting him in position to target their weak points and launch his own offensive.
  • Smash everything and there might be a Toad inside. Toads are Origami King's collectibles. That frying pan full of bacon and eggs is actually a Toad.

Paper Mario: The Origami King releases? on Switch on July 17. At least now we have some proper information.

Out on July 17

Look, we all knew it was coming!

This morning Nintendo has announced Paper Mario: The Origami King&nbs??p;for Switch, which is due out on July 17 for $59.99. The narrative will be extremely familiar: Mario is invited to somet?hing (the kingdom's origami festival) and things go horribly wrong.

A foe named King Olly will attempt a power grab as he "unleashes his plan to fold the entire world," enlisting Bowser's own minions to his cause. To fight back Mario will use a new "1000-Fold Arms" mechanic, which "allows you to interact with the landscape by stretching out and pulling, peeling and revealing new locations, helping you to solve puzzles and uncover unexpected surprises." Nintendo also teases a new turn-based battle system that is "far from stationary," as well as plenty of minigames. You can check out the lovely box art here and the official site here.

Well, with Ni?ntendo sitting back and seemingly avoiding a June show??case this year, this is what we can look forward to: randomly waking up to new Mario projects.

Here's a craftily hidden video showcasing combat on the Japanese YouTube account (th??anks tvirusgetz!)

And here's a tease of the types of cameos you can expect from Origami King
