Today, Nintendo published its fi?nancial reports for the second quarter of the fiscal year, and it's full of surprises regarding the sales numbers of both the company's software and hardware, with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom being one of the biggest standouts.

Nintendo's best-selling games of Q2: Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

The latest entry in The Legend of Zelda series, Echoes of Wisdom, was one of the company's best-selling titles, with more than 2.58 million units sold from its release date, September 26, to the end of the quarter a mere five days later. This means that Nintendo managed to sell almost 30 million units in less than a week, which is quite impressive for a new 2D Legend of Zelda title that's not a remake of an older game.

Other notorious examples of Nintendo releases that sold remarkably well in the past few months include the Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door remaster, which, with 1.94 million units sold, already matched and surpassed the sales of the original GameCube release. Luigi's Mansion 2 HD also did quite well, with 1.57 million units, but the undisputed king of the Nintendo Switch catalog still is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, since Nintendo sold 2.31 million units within this fiscal year, and ?it remains as the best-selling game in the entire console.

The Nintendo Switch has seen better days (But it's okay)

Nintendo Switch Lite: Hyrule Edition.

On the other hand, the shifting trends also show some surprising information regarding their recent sales. For starters, the Nintendo Switch itself had a significant decrease of 31.0% ??in yearly hardware sales, and a 27.6% decrease in the software equivalent.

This makes a lot of sense when you think about it. After all, the Switch has been out for over seven years, and Nintendo h?as alre?ady stated that it plans to release its successor within this fiscal year. Most people who wanted to buy a Switch most likely ??already have on??e, and those few who still don't have may prefer to wait for its successor.

After all, most successful video game consoles sell fewer units around the time the company's next system is about to launch, so these numbers are not worrying at all. Nintendo still managed to sell 6.84 million Switch units in this fiscal year, meaning that the console has achieved?? 146.??04 million units sold in to date. It seems it's Zelda to the rescue once again because Nintendo specifically noted that the Hyrule Edition of the Switch Lite released in September resul?ted in a significant increment in? hardware sales during the second quarter.

Digital software did a lot better, though

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.

The financial report also disclosed that while digital sales of games decreased by 26.5% during the first half of the fiscal year, the overall digital software sales of the Switch proportionally increased by 6.1 percentage points, up to 56.3%. According to Nintendo, there's a good reason as to why this happened: fewer people bought DLC and add-on content. This makes a lot of sense, seeing as some of the most popular DLC packs in the console, like Pokemon Scarlet & Violet's The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero or Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's Booster Course Pass, came out in 2023.

Nintendo also revealed that an increase in download-only games and stable sales of its Nintendo Switch Online service caused the proportion of its digital sales to increase on a yearly basis. This means that the company's new online service, which not only lets players connect to each other to play online but also gives them access to an extensive catalog of classic NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Sega Genesis, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance games, has been working very efficiently. So, it shouldn't be a surprise that Nintendo recently confirmed that it plans to carry the service onto the Switc?h's successor.

The inevitable impact of the Super Mario Bros. Movie

Official promotional material of the Super Mario Bros Movie.

To no one's surprise, The Super Mario Bros Movie (which became one of the highest-grossing animated films of all time) energized its video game sales. It didn't specify which games sold better because of this movie, but it likely affected titles in the Mario series, especially those the company released in 2023, like Super Mario Bros. Wonder and the Super Mario RPG remake.

This means that the sequel will likely do the same, especially considering that it will premiere in 202??6, when the Switch's succes??sor will already be available for purchase worldwide.

One cheeky way you can spend your points in Paper Mario: TTYD is a build that players have termed “Danger Mario. The idea is that if you maintain Mario’s HP at 5, you can exploit badges to de????al massive damage.

If you decrease Mario’s HP to 5 to push him into danger status and equip multiple Power Rush badges and some Last Stands, then Mario can take on almost any challenge. However, this isn’t fully available until much later in the game. This is because you in??variably?? start the game at 5 HP.

In order to adjust this and achieve Danger Mario status, you’ll need to visit Chet Rippo. You can access him by going down the pipe in front of Professor Frank?ly’s door and using Bobbery to blow open the crack in the wall. This means that you won’t be able to reach them un??til after Chapter 5.

Chet Rippo can then reallocate your stats, so you can shift your HP to BP. Each adju??stment costs 39 coins. I??f you move it down to 5HP, Mario will be permanently in the danger zone.

However, keep in mind that you still need FP. Even while focusing on BP, you still need ??to be able to use ??your abilities. I’d recommend stockpiling at least 20 FP, but you may want more.

It’s also a good idea to have Life Mushrooms on hand at all times. These will revive you if things don’t break your way. You can get them from the store ??in Twilight Town or from the shop in the Westside Rogueport.

What badges to equip

The purpose of the Danger Mario build is to capitalize on status boosts offered by certain badges that buff you up when you drop below 5HP. Power Rush and Last Stand are the main badges to look at.

Power Rush badges can be bought at Pianta Parlor (the casino in Rogueport) for 34 Pianta Tokens with the gold card (obtained through the Trouble Center) and are sometimes carried by enemies (Paratroopas, specifically). There is also one available at the Lovely Howz of Badges above Rogueportâ€??™s inn.

Last Stand Badges, which wi?ll halve the damage Mario takes when you’re at or below 5 health, are less easy to access. One is found in the hallway of the Glitz Pit, while the other is found in the Lovely Howz of Badges. It can also be stolen from enemies (specifically Hyper Goombas and Green Fuzzies) using Ms. Mowz ability. The badge provides diminishing returns, but ??they only require one BP to equip, so keep piling them on.

You may also want the Lucky Day badge. This is found on the? 90th floor of the Pit of 100 Trials and als?o for matching all four numbers on the lottery. This badge causes enemies to miss, and equipping multiple raises your chances.

Since being able to attack is a very important part of this build, you’ll want to open up your options. You can keep jumping your primary method of attack if you get the Spike Shield badge from the room beneath Rogueport with the trail of stabbing spikes. You use Vivian to protect Mario whenever the spikes are about to emerge upward. You’ll also want the Ice Power badge, which is found beneath the bridge on Keelhaul Key. These will let you jump on spiked or fiery enemies without taking damage.

With that in mind, you’ll want to concentrate on jumping attacks. Multibounce will allow you to attack all enemies facing you, allowing you to wipe out most groups without allowing them to get an attack in. You should also use either Power Jump or Power Bounce or both. Power Bounce requires you to continually hit?? the action command for maximum effect, so if you have a habit of missing these, it may be better to use Power Jump instead. Again, you can use both, but you shoul??d definitely pile on as many as you can hold to increase their attack power.

The idea is to have?? ??so much attack power that nothing can stand up to Mario's mighty feet.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an RPG-lite. It includes leveling, but ea?ch time you hit a new level, you are given the choice of three stats to upgrade. That's still ?quite the commitment with huge consequences. So, which ones should you pick for maximum efficiency?

For clarity, the three stats are:

  • HP: Health points for how much damage you can take.
  • FP: Flower points used for abilities
  • BP: Badge points used for equipping badges.

FP and HP? rise 5 points, while BP rises 3 points when selected during a level-up.

For obvious reasons, you need FP. Unless you are just going to keep on downing honey to use your skills, you’ll want some sort of stockpile. You might think that HP is also important, but probably not as much as you think. That’s because, in truth, BP gives you the most flexibility.

Backing up for a moment, the first three times you level up, you don’t have many options for badges. The most helpful ones come a little bit later in the game. An early investment in BP isn’t the worst idea, but it would be better spent elsewhere. To be more specific, I’d advise spending one or two levels upgrading your FP. The amount you start with doesn’t allow? for the use of many abilities.

However, once you get up there in levels, BP is the best place to focus your points. Keep in mind that your attack power and skills don’t increase with each level. Beyond getting new shoes and an updated hammer, badges are the only way to increase your damage output. It’s also the best way to improve your defense. You can even double-u??p badges to further increase their effectiveness. You can also get more badges by using Ms. Mowz to steal them from enemies who are holding items in battle.

While badges are important, you probably don’t want to entirely neglect your HP and FP. Some players recommend doing an alternating pattern of HP, BP, FP, BP, HP, BP, and so on. However, I found that once I hit around 25 or 30 points in HP and FP, that was enough for most of the game. Everything else I mostly put into BP.

Then, it’s a matter of finding the best badges and equipping them. There are plenty of both attack and defense badges (Power Plus and Defend Plus), and you can stack ability badges on top of each other to increase their strength. The important thing is t??hat you have enough Badge Points to hold them, so that’s why investing in BP is so useful. It lets you adapt more readily.

If you find your build isn’t working well (or if you discovered this guide several levels in and it makes sense to you), then you can talk to Chet Rippo after Chapter 5 to re-allocate your points. He’s found beneath Rogueport. Take the pipe down from in front of Professor Frankly’s house and use Bobbery to blo??w open the ?cracked wall. Go down that pipe and talk to Chet Rippo. He’ll reallocate points for 39 coins each.

The RPG genre is host to some of the longest games available. However, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is more of an RPG-lite, stripping out a lot of complexities and replacing them with simple action-bas??ed mechanics to keep it interesting. So?, how long does it take to beat?

This all depends on how much side content you’re going to do and how much you’ll devote to exploration, but on average, it’s about 40 hours in length.

In my own personal experience, that's about the runtime. I didn't do absolutely every last activity, but I did take on ??a great deal of side content, a?nd that's what I wound up with.

While Paper Mario: TTYD is structurally linear, there’s a decent amount of exploration piled in there. On top of that, you might try finding all the tattle log entries, Star Pieces, or Shine Sprites. Or maybe you’ll battle down the ??Pit of 100 Trials to gain every last badge you can from the game. There’s a lot that can keep you occupied, even before you reach the credits.

On top of that, the Switch version of Paper Mario: TTYD piles on some additional content to the GameCube version to keep you satisfied for?? ?longer.

If you only concentrate on the critical path (only the necessary parts), it could take you more like 32 hours. However, that sounds like a pretty boring way to play. It’s more likely that, e?ven without trying to complete a??bsolutely everything, you’ll hit closer to 40 hours.

Being refused by pipes isn’t new to Mario, but in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they can be a little forward about it in one chapter. Starting Chapter 4 requires that you? have y?our name written on your butt just to get to Twilight Town, but there’s another pipe within that behaves the same way with no explanation.

The pipe is located in a house within Twilight Town beside the item shop. You’ll know the house because the pipe is a dominant feature of its single room. If you attempt to go down the pipe, you’re told, “The pipe rejected you./p>

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Pipe rejection

Don’t worry about it. Don’t pay any attention to the pipe. It’s not important right?? now. It isn’t a puzzle that is keeping you from reaching vast loot. Don’t waste ??your time or energy on it. You’ll discover its use in due course.

The pipe actually connects to an area in Creepy Steeple. During the chapter, you’ll descend to the basement in search of the name of the person who st??ole Mario’s name and body. Once you finish that part, there’s a pipe that will take you back to Twilight Town. The reason it rejects you is because it’s a one-way trip. A temporary reprieve from traipsing back and forth between Creepy Steeple and Twilight Town.

There’s nothing you can dow ith it before that, and there’s nothing you can do to have it accept you. Instead, you’re going to have?? to accept it as it is. Every ??pipe is beautiful, flaws and all.

I like trivia, and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door provided me with not one, but two (technically-sort-of three) chances to flex my brain muscle. Throughout the game you’re? quizzed by Thwomp twice on the goings on of the game. If you’re paying attention, they aren’t too diffi??cult, but if you’re coming back from an absence or are simply absent-minded, here’s some help.

Chapter 1 Thwomp Quiz answers

Your first quiz in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door happens early. During Chapter 1, you need to get the Sun and Moon stones from Shhwonk Fortress. You’ll meet an ornery Thwomp who will hand over the stones if you can beat his quiz. You only ??need to get five correct without g?etting three strikes.

Here are the questions and answers.

Q1: What’s hidden in Shhwonk Fortress?
A1: Sun and Moon Stones

Q2: What do/does one [item] and one [item] cost at the shop in Petalburg? Total!
A2: X Coins.
This ques??tion sometimes varies. You may want to write down each items cost in the Petalburg shop. If they ask what a mushroom and fireflower cost, the answer is 12. If you get it wrong, you’ll just hav?e to answer another question.

Q3: What is the name of the mayor of Petalburg?
A3: Kroop.

Q4: Tell me, now! Where is the Crystal Star?
A4: Hooktail Castle.

Q5: How can one get from Rogueport to Petal Meadows?
A5: Go through a Pipe.

Q6: Which of the following characters can be found in Petalburg?
A6: Koopa Troopas

Q7: What number question is this?
A7: Number Seven.

Don’t worry if y??ou fail. Your pu??nishment is simply having to face Clefts. If you have a POW block on you, this isn’t a problem at all.

Chapter 7 Thwomp Quiz answers

You run into another Thwomp in Chapter 7 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. This one is found i?n the X-Nauts moon fortress. The rules are the same: answer five without missin?g three.

Here are the questions and answers:

Q1: Exactly what’s hidden here?
A1: Elevator key

Q2: What’s the name of the girl in Petalburg who’s waiting patiently for Koopsreturn?
A2: Koopie Koo

Q3: Goomba, Lava Bubble, Buzzy Beetle, and Boo. How many feet do they have? Total!
A: 6 feet

Q4: Where was the one, the only, Diamond Star?
A4: Hooktail’s belly

Q5: What was the name of the very first champion of the Glitz Pit?
A5: Prince Mush

Q6: What did Frankie and Francesca loose on Keelhaul Key?
A6: A ring.

Q7: What number question is this?
A7: Number Seven.

If you fail here, it’s X-Yux you face. Not the worst fate ?to befal?l you.

Chapter 4 Interlude - Peach/TEC Quiz answers

Here’s that technically-sort-of quiz I mentioned. At the end of Chapter 4 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and before the start of Chapter 5, there’s a Peach interlude. The crux of it is that Tec ha??s Peach answer 5 questions. The difference here is that rather than quiz Peach on what happened previously in the game, he asks her to deduce what is happe?ning in the story right now.

It’s a very interesting way of delivering exposition. As it respects you, the player, enough to assume you’ve figured thin?gs out already. And if anything is unclear, it gives you the necessary prompt to finally put?? that piece of the puzzle into place.

I’m actually not sure what happens if you fail here, but I’m guessing it isn’t much. That doesn’t matter, though, because here are ??the answers:

Q1: What will happen if you collect seven Crystal Stars?
A1: Thousand-Year Door opens.

Q2: What is the goal of Grodus, leader of the X-Nauts?
A2: To conquer the world.

Q3: What is the legendary treasure that waits behind the Thousand-Year Door?
A3: A 1,000-year-old demon's soul.

Q4: What does Sir Grodus wish to do with this ancient demon's soul?
A4: Bring the demon back to life.

Q5: What is required to seal up the demon again?
A5: Crystal Stars.

There you have it. All the answers to all the quizzes (and quiz-adjacent sequences) in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

In Chapter 7 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the team needs to find a cannon to get to the moon. Apparently, they subscribe to Sparkster and Doomguy’s newsletter. However, when you visit Fahr Outpost, you find?? that the??y won’t even admit the cannon exists. When forced to, the mayor will say he requires the okay from Goldbob and General White to fire it.

Goldbob’s location (in Poshley Heights) will probably be fresh in your memory since you left him there during Chapter 6. However, you probably haven’t seen General White since Chapter 1, and?? even then, he doesn’t make a very memorable appearance. You’d be forgiven for ov?erlooking or forgetting him.

General White can first be seen way back in Petalburg. He’s pretty in the dumps at that time. However, when you go back there to find him in Chapter 7, ??he’ll be gone. If you talk to the Koopa Troopa near where he was or Kroop (the mayor), you’ll be told he went somewhere sunny.

Just a warning: this whole process requires a lot of travel. The quickest and most convenient way to get through it is to use the collection of pipes directly beneath Rogueport Square. Ea?ch one leads to one of the chapter locales, and it re??ally cuts down on travel time.

Go to Keelhaul Key. You won’t f??ind him there either. Talk to Pa-Patch, who will give you the next hint on where to go.

Next stop is Glitzville. Of course, he’s not there. If you talk to Podler in the ?Juice Bar, he’ll say he met General White, but he set off to some great big tree.

Go to the Great Tree where the Puni are. Here, you’d ex??pec?t to have to talk to the elder, but that’s not the case. Talk to the Puni right inside the door. The next hint suggests Twilight Town.

Head to Twilight Town. Talk to the citizen in front of the inn, and you’ll be given a hi?nt that points you at Fahr ?Outpost; the place where you started.

Return to Fahr Outpost. Talk to the mayor. While in conversation, you’ll see General White step out from a? building in the background, then turn around and go back in. Go to where he emerged, and you’ll finally be face-to-face with him. He’ll say he was looking for you this whole time but was also given the runaround. He’s willing to help fire you from a cannon.

Vivian was always a great partner in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, but she was given a bit of a boost around the release of the Switch version. If she’s caught your attention, you might be wonderin?g when she joins your party.

Vivian joins your party in Chapter 4. It’s probably no surprise since Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door doesn’t give you very much player agency, but there’s no way to get her?? sooner.

Sh?e starts the game as an antagonist. She’s part of The Three Shadows along with her sisters Marilyn and Be??ldam. Beldam, the eldest and de facto leader of the group is verbally abusive, constantly belittling Vivian and blaming her for her own mistakes.

In Chapter 4, Vivian has once again been blamed for Beldam’s mistake and is left searching for the Superbombomb, an? explosive device with unknown (but presumably high) yield. After Mario has his name and body stolen, he assists Vivian in finding it, though it’s discovered broken. Not realizing that it's her sister’s enemy she’s talking to, she agrees to help ??him recover his stolen moniker.

Vivian joins as a party member at that moment. Since the rest of Mario’s party has been fooled into following his doppelganger, she spends time as his only p??arty member. This continues through the battle at ??the end of Chapter 4.

Before that battle, Vivian learns of Mario’s true identity. Initially, fearing the wrath of her sister, she abandons ??Mario, but returns saying that he’s the only person who ever treated her kindly. From that point forward??, she’s a permanent fixture on the team.

What are Vivian’s abilities?

Vivian is one of the best partners in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Her field ability has her draw Mario i??nto the shadows where enemies (and NPCs) won’t notice him. This is used in the game’s puzzles to allow you to eavesdrop on some characters to get them to speak openly and unaware.

Her initial HP is 15. In battle, her default attack is a flaming punch called Shade Fist. This does direct damage and can also set enemies on ?fire. You won’t want to use this against fire-based enemies, as fire attacks heal them, and since it’s a direct attack, will result in Vivian getting hurt.

Veil requires 1 FP and draws Mario into the shadows where enemies can’t hit him. The downside is that, on the turn whe??re they re-app?ear, Vivian’s turn is used up.

After upgrading Vivian once, she’ll reach 20 max HP. She’ll also learn the move Fiery Jinx, which uses 6 FP. Again, it’s a? fire attack, but this one dama?ges all enemies. While you still don’t want to use this on fire-based enemies since it will heal them, it does indirect damage, so Vivian won’t be hurt by them.

On the second upgrade, Vivian reaches 30 HP. She learns the ski??ll Infatuate, which has her blow them a kiss. Any enemy affected will become confused.

Is Vivian actually transgender?

What has brought Vivian into the spotlight is the revelation (for some) that she’s transgender in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. It’s new informati?on for most because the English translation of the original GameCube version omitted this.

In the Switch version, this has been changed to better reflect the original Japanese script. She says the line: “Truth is, it took me a while to realize I was their sisternot their brother. Now their usual bullying feels heavier./p>

While that doesn’t directly say it, it would re?quire some extreme mental gymnastics to read any other inference from it. To add to this, the original Japanese script already implied that she’s transgender, although culturally, that’s a little less clear. That’s a whole topic in itself.

On the other hand, most other translations retain the idea tha?t Vivian is transgender. It’s only German and English that alter the script to ??remove the reference.

You may wonder why it was changed back in 2004. While it’s true that 2004 was a very different time in terms of LGBTQ+ accep?tance, that’s most likely not the whole story. Rather than ??concern for offending parent groups, Nintendo probably had the line changed to avoid getting a T for Teen rating from the ESRB.

In 2000, The Sims was given a Teen rating. This might seem certain today, given its mild references to sex, alcohol, and drugs. However, the original version of The Sims didn’t have any of that. The first real allusion to Sims having sex was introduced in the first expansion pack LivinLarge. While the T rating also cites Comic Mischief and Mild Animated Violence, it describes the sexual content as “Mature Sexual Content. What it’s likely referring to is the fact that same-sex Sims can kiss and have relationships. That is something that was in the original version of The Sims.

Another instance is with 2005’s Playboy: The Mansion. Despite being based on what was, at the time, a pornographic magazine, the base version only received an M rating because the sexual content wasn’t explicit. However, the expansion, Playboy: The Mansion: Private Party, received an AO rating. What changed? The female stars could have relations with other females?.

A??s established, 2004 was a different time for LGBTQ+ rep??resentation. It’s still possible that Nintendo had the line changed to prevent reaction from various groups or even internal transphobia. However, I feel the more likely explanation is that they didn’t want to lose the E for Everybody rating.

You knew that red Skull Gem of Flavio’s was going to come in handy at some point in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and here it is. During Chapter 5, you find a skull-shaped door and it seems like the skull-shaped gem might have somethin??g to do with unlocking ??it. Convince Flavio to hand it over, and you’ll meet with the ‘Stache Brothers Red and Blue.

To reiterate, this al??l happens in Chapter 5. About halfway throu??gh the chapter, you’ll find the skull door. Eventually, you’ll return to Flavio who will follow you back across the island to see it for himself. You can then convince him to borrow the skull. It slots into the door, and the ‘Stache Brothers Red and Blue rise from the ground.

The hint for completing this ?is in Flavio’s song, which he will helpfully start singing soon after the ‘Stache Brothersappearance.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Flavio's Song

The song first mentions Red ‘Stache “landing on his ?endthree times. What this means is that you need to jump on top of the pillar with the red mustache and do a spin jump? (ground pound) three times.

You’ll then ??need to move to Blue ‘Stache. The song says he’s whacked ??four times on the belly. That simply tells you to hit it in the face three times with your hammer.

The skull door will then (partially) open. Grab Admiral Bobbery and toss him up o??n the ledge that opened. He’ll walk in and detonate, bl?owing the door open.

Flavio will mourn the loss of his treas??ured Skull Gem, but it is quickly returned to him.

Admiral Bobbery is on his last legs in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Chapter 5. His final wi?sh ?is to taste that sweet, sweet (I assume) Chuckola Cola. This starts a quest that can be somewhat confusing.

He’ll tell you that his own stash of the drink probably washed up with the rest of the ship. This should t??ake you back to t??he crew’s camp and Flavio.

Talk to Flavio, and he’ll admit to having the Chuckola Cola but will refuse to give it up unless you bring him a tropical fruit. You probably wouldn’t be here if y?ou already found this, so let’s proceed wi?th the assumption that you haven’t.

What Flavio is looking for is a coconut.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door coconut location.

Where to find a coconut in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The tricky part of finding a coconut in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is that the camera won’t cooperate. To get one, you’ll need ??to go back to the suspension bridge where you saw the crewmates (including Admiral Bobbery) getting attacked by ghosts.

It does??n’t really show it, but on either side of the bridge, if you walk toward the camera, you’ll drop down onto a platform. You’ll find a couple of gaps over water that are too wide for Mario to cross on his own. You’ll need to partner up with Yoshi and use their flutter jump to cross safely. You’ll make it to a pipe which will spit you out in the background.

You’ll find yourself on another island on the backdrop. There’s a single palm tree there. Walk up and ??hit it with your hammer. It will drop the two coconuts. Grab them, then head back to Flavio.

Flavio will com??plain about your gauche choice of fruit (fun fact: coconuts are actually considered a fruit) but will hand over the Chu?ckola Cola. Take this back to Bobbery, to fulfill his final wish.

Spoiler alert: Bobbery won’t actually die. This is a Mario gam?e. He’ll simply fall asleep. Wake him up, and he’ll join your party.

Here’s an interesting fact: While the drink you fetch is called Chuckola Cola and is a reference to the Mario & Luigi games, it’s actually not intended to be that. In the Japanese version, it’s referred to? as “Vintage Red,which would suggest it’s a wine. This wasn’t changed in the Switch port and still remains as Chuckola Cola.

One of your partners in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a newborn Yoshi that you name yourself. The marketing material invariably shows this Yos?hi as being green, but that’s actually only one of a variety of possibilities.

What color of Yoshi you get depends on the amount of time that it stays in its egg. There are seven colo??r possibilities. But let’s first look at how to get the baby Yoshi. Just scroll down to the chart if that’s what you’re looking f??or.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Baby Yoshi

How to get Baby Yoshi in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

You’ll come across baby (or kid or mini, whatever) Yoshi in the regular course of the game. It occurs during chapter 3, ??whe?n you’re battling your way up the ranks in the Glitzpit.

As you proceed, you’ll eventually be?? told that you should go try a hot dog from the stand in front of the stadium. Do as you’re told and yo?u’ll see a cutscene of an egg bouncing around with the stand owner chasing after it. It will eventually go up to the top of the hot dog stand and stay there.

To reach the egg, go to the roof of the Juice Bar and use the paper airplane pad to glide over to the hot dog stand. This might take a few attempts, as it’s pretty precise. Once you ??reach the egg, it will join your party.

Continue to fight up the ranks of the Glitzpit until you reach the fight with the Iron Adonis ??Brothers. You won’t be able to beat them, initially, no matter what you do. Run a??way (or get defeated). You’ll be sent back to the locker room, where you’ll find the egg has hatched. Name baby Yoshi, and he’ll become a party member. His battle ability is how you defeat the Adonis Brothers.

How to choose your baby Yoshi color

Baby Yoshi’s color depends on how long he stays in the egg. If you beat the Iron Adonis Brothers in less than six minutes, you’ll get the default green. However, the color changes every few minutes after that until it hits the 20-minute mark and starts over.

This means that if you start a timer and push your way up to the Iron Adonis fight, you can choose what color you want. Just wait in the fight until your time comes up, then run. I would recommend that you save first and be c??aref?ul not to save again if you get the wrong color.

With that in mind, he??re are the colors and the timing you need.

Color Time
Green 0-6 Minutes
Red 6-9 Minutes
Blue 9-12 Minutes
Orange 12-15 Minutes
Pink 15-18 Minutes
Black 18-19 Minutes
White 19-20 Minutes

After 20 minutes have passed, the cycle star??ts again. So between 20-26 minutes, you’ll get green Yoshi. 38-39 minutes and y?ou’ll get black Yoshi.

It can be a little tricky to get the timing right, so make sure that you save first. If you do, you can always just try again for another color. You cannot change th??e color after the fact, so you'll need to? get it right before moving on.

Lastly, the co??lor does not affect the stats or abilities of the Yoshi. It is purely cos?metic.

Chapter 6 is my absolute favorite part of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. Turn-based combat can?? start to feel dull after 30-or-so hours, so when the game suddenly turns into an adventure-style investigation, it’s a welcome reprieve. However??, you might get stuck trying to find a blanket in that chapter and want to get back to the turn-based combat. Here’s where to find it.

Chapter 6 has you r??iding on the Excess Express, and a large chunk of the beginning has you mer?ely solving mysteries. These can get a bit obtuse, and where to find the blanket is the absolute peak of cryptic.

The Excess Express isn’t very big, so your best course of action at the start of each mystery is to talk to everyone you can. If you talk to the toad who is constantly holding a fork and knife, he’ll tell you that he heard something in the next room?, and that’s your big clue.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door fat toad

The room next to the toad (Room 004), appears to be empty. Your first thought might be to check for a trap door. If you hit something with your hammer, a hatc??h will shake on the floor. Do a ground pound (not on the hatch but beside it), the hatch will flip around and a Star Piece will pop out. Not what you’re looking for.

If you go back to the toad, he’ll insist that he heard something. If you return to the room, however, nothing has changed. You might also think to use Flurrie’s field ability, but you won’t find a sticker to peel off anywhere. There’s nothing on or under the bed. There is no concealed hatch, no small nook?, no crack to slip through. The room seems empty.

You need to grab your partner, Vivian. Use her Field Ability to? drop in??to the shadows. Before long, the ghost of a toad will appear.

The Toad will ??admit that he has the blanket but says that if you want it, he first needs you to go to the baggage car and find the diary that is still stashed there.

Where to get the Ragged Diary in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

The Ragged Diary is in exactly the spot that the ghost suggested. Head left along the train all the way to the back. A conductor blocks the door, but if you talk to him, he’ll step aside, knowing that you don’t say no to a? gh?ost.

In the baggage car, there’s a pile of crates in the mi?ddle of the room. Between them, there is a ??small gap. Turn sideways and slip through the crack and you’ll emerge at the other side. There, you’ll find a chest. Open it, and you’ll discover the Ragged Diary.

The ghost tells you not to open the diary, and ??he means?? it. If you want to do it, save first. The game will warn you three times before you are finally able to open the diary, and then you’ll be interrupted before you can get far. At least, that’s what happens in the GameCube version. I didn’t think to try it on Switch because I’m not a snoop, but it’s a good bet that this plays out the same way.

Bring the Ragged Diary back to the ghost, and he’ll give thanks. He’ll also ?decide that spending his afterlife on a posh train doesn’t sound? that bad, and will remain there. You can talk to him throughout the rest of the trip, though he does disappear at times.

With the blanket in hand, return to the conductor. He'll t??hank you for it, and the trip (and chapter) will continue.

Lumpy, the green Ratooey, is looking for someone to fund his search for oil in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. He’s certain he can strike it rich and promises a re??turn on investment. However, he’s asking for a lot, so should you do it?

Lumpy appears early in the game. You’ll find him near the dock in the south part of Rogueport. He’s loi??tering near the extreme right side of the screen, and being a bright green rat, he’s a bit hard to miss.

When you talk to him, he’ll speak of his aspirations to drill Dry Dry Desert for its black gold (oil). He’ll ask for a steep upfront payment of 100 coins. Pay him that, and he’ll ask for 100 more. Pay him that, and he’ll ask for 100 more. After you’ve paid 300 coins, he’ll say he has enough. He’ll then depart after Chapter 4. Despite his earnestness, there’s something sketchy about the whole deal.?? It’s probably the way he ??gets indignant if you refuse.

However, if you do make an investment, he does stay true to his word. He’ll return to Rogueport?? after Chapter 6, and will give you a share of the earnings that your investment help??ed enable.

How much does Lumpy give you?

In Paper Mario: TTYD, Lumpy?? will return from Dry Dry Desert after Chapter 6, and will bring you stor??ies of his adventure, as well as a return on your investment.

Here are wh?at you ge??t depending on what you invested.

  • 100 coin investment - 300 coins
  • 200 coin investment - 600 coins
  • 300 coin investment - 999 coins

Each level of investment is tripled, so no matter what you give to Lumpy, you get a decent stack of coins for your trouble. However, the 300 coin investment nets you the largest profit by a pretty hefty margin.

So, yes, you should definitely invest in Lumpy’s enterprise. This might sound obvious, but I’d recommend 300 coins if you can spare it since it will co??mpletely fill your pockets.

Speaking of which, the maximum number of coins you could carry in the GameCube version is 999. This means that if you had coins in your pocket when you collected from Lumpy, it would subtract from the number you’re given. However, this has been increased in the Switch version. I'm not sure what the maximum is, but I'm guessing 9999. Either way, you should now be able to fit all of his reward in your pockets.

In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door you get all your partners throughout the course of the story. That is to say, all the required partners. There is one that you don’t ne?ed in order to complete the game, but?? she requires a detour to get. This is how to add Ms. Mowz to your party.

Ms. Mowz is the flirtatious rat-thing you meet a few times in the narrative. She shows up in Hooktail Castl?e, for example, and then again in the Great Tree. Each time, she talks about how hunky Mario is and gives him a little peck before running off.

After Chapter 4, you can actually recruit her into your party. To do so, you need to head to the Trouble Center in Eastern Rogueport. If you’ve never used it, this is essential?ly a bulletin board for side-quests. While some of these only result in getting a pocketf??ul of change for your troubles, others will reward you with extremely useful items or, as we’re talking about here, Ms. Mowz.

In the list of quests, you’re looking for one called “Elusive Badge!posted by someone anonymous?? (???). The request will tell you to meet on top of Zess T’s h??ouse, which you can get to by going into the inn, climbing the stairs to the second floor, and exiting through the door on the left.

If you peek into the badge shop before talking to Ms. Mowz, you’ll discover ??her secret identity. She’s the assistant at the badge shop, if the shape of her tail didn’t give her away earlier.

Talk to Ms. Mowz on the rooftop and she’ll tell you the badge she’s looking for is in the? room that Hooktail was defeated in. ?However, she can’t find it, which is where you come in.

How to find the Elusive Badge in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

To get the Elusive Badge in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you nee?d to return to the room you defeated Hooktail in. Getting back can be a pain. It isn’t difficult now that you’ve got more chapters under your belt, but it is a long trek. I don’t have any shortcuts for you; you just need to go back to Hooktail Castle and retrace the path back to the top.

When you reach Hooktail’s Room, youâ€?™ll find it quiet and empty. Search around, and you probably won’t see anything out of place. However, if you go straight right from the door, you’ll eventually bump into something invisible roughly in the center of the room.

Switch to Flurrie and use her ability on the invisible b??lockade.?? A sticker will give way and reveal a chest. Inside the chest is the Elusive Badge.

As a note, you cannot immediately equip the Elusive Badge. It isn’t considered a Badge at this point. However, at the end of the quest, it will be handed back t?o you in the form of At?tack FX B.

With that in mind, return to Ms. Mowz. She’ll reveal that this was simply a test to see if you had what it takes to be a successful badge hun??ter. She will then join your team. You aren’t given a choice.

What are Ms. Mowz’s abilities in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

While not required to complete the game, Ms. Mowz is an extremely useful ally to have in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

Her partner ability??, in particular, is one you’ll probably keep returning to use. She can sniff out nearby items, hidden or otherwise. Her nose will begin to twitch when one is nearby, and you can hit the X button to have her take a deep whiff and tell you exactly how close it is.

In battle, she has another useful ability. Her “Kiss Thiefskill costs 2 FP and will steel an item from an enemy. Since some enemies hold badges, this enables you to build up your badge collection further by swiping them. Plenty of enemies in the Pit of 100 Trials?, for example, will have badges on them, and Ms. Mowz can snatch?? them for you.

Aside from that, her default attack is a physical slap. When upgraded, her 3 FP “Teasewill make enemies Dizzy. When ultra-upgraded, her 10 FP “Smoochability can h??eal ??Mario, which is helpful when you don’t have the items or star power to heal any other way.

Overall, ?Ms. Mowz isn’t that terrific in?? combat, but she more than makes up for it with her thief-y abilities.

I hate when things get dangled out of reach, and it’s hard to miss the Shine Sprite in Glitzville in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. So, what’s up with that? Can you get it now? C??an you get it later?

I’m going to give you some advice: when something is too high to get to in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, there is a good chance there is a hidden? coin block under it. There’s a red block in The Great Tree that you may have noticed. It just kind of hovers over nothing. If you send Koops underneath it, he’ll hit a block that you can jump on and you can then jump again to hit the block above it.

It’s the same deal in Glitzville, right in front of the Glitz Pit. There’s an invisible coin block sitting under the Shine Sprite. If you use Koopspower, you can hit it. Howev?er, it’s easier just to swing your hammer at t??he spot under the Shine Sprite. It will hit the block and expose it. You can then jump on the block, and then jump off the block to hit the Shine Sprite block.

That’s about it. Generally, if there’s somethin?g you can’t get to, searching for a coin block or using Flurrie to se??arch for stickers with her breath are your best bet. You do get an improved jump later in the game (Chapter 6), but it’s for reaching objects directly above you. You can’t really move side-to-side.

To actually find this pipe, you need to go to West Rogueport and look for a little storm d??rain. There’s a child cowering nearby. Turn sideways and you can slip into it. You’ll land on a platform in the underground. Hop on your baby Yoshi, then use his flutter kick to get to the ??platform on your left. Through the door there you’ll find the pipe I mentioned. Attempt to go down, and it will pop you back up.

You need to then return to Professor Frankly who has no idea how to get down the pipe. He suggests finding an inhabitant of Twilight Town that might be hanging around Rogueport. Now where would ?one be? Hmm?

Where to find Darkly in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

You need to find Darkly to get to Twilight Town in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. If you’re like me, you spend a lot of time exploring dark alleys, so you may have already met him. He’s actu?ally loitering in the alley right behind Professor Frankly’s house.

If you go left from Professor Frankly’s door and stop before going through the archway to Rogueport’s central square, you’ll see a brick wall behind you. Just a normal brick wall. Or is it!?

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door secret alley

Through clever use of perspective, there’s?? a hidden gap in the middle of that wall. If you just push near the center, the camera will change angles and you’ll find yourself in an alleyway. Not far into it, you’ll see Darkly looking somewhat sinister but otherwise minding his own business.

When you talk to him, he’s very forthcoming? with information. He says you just need something with your name written on i??t to go through the pipe. I guess Mario’s monogrammed hat doesn’t count. Thankfully, he’s willing to help by writing Mario’s name on his butt.

Return to the pipe that refused y??ou before. Now you’ll be able to go down it. Now that I think of it, I have no idea why that segue was necessary. Was it entirely for the?? scene of Mario having his name written on his butt?

To really get into the meat of Chapter 3 in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you’re going to need a Blimp ticket. You’re told that, in order to get a blimp ticket, you need to see Don Pianta. Actu?ally, let’s start there.

To tal??k to Don Pianta, you first nee?d to meet his rival, Robbo. To get there, you need to slip through the crack next to the Trouble Center. There, you’ll have to pay 64 coins. Robbo will then tell you that, in order to see Don Pianta, you’ll need to buy a Dried Mushroom and a Dizzy Dial, then give the clerk the password “Yellow.Well, first she’ll ask what color your mustache is. You can say yellow, but she’ll then just correct herself and ask what your favorite color is. Give her the answer “yellow, and you’ll be let through the back door.

Up the stairs, youâ€??™ll meet with Don Pianta. He’s vaguely threatening, but eventually will give you the deal that if you can track down his daughter and former underling, he’ll give you the blimp ticket. They’re planning on eloping, and he needs to “talkâ€?to them.

Once the conversation is over, you’ll need to head to the Docks.

These are South of Rogueport’s main square. You’ll need?? to go right onto the docks further south, as the couple are standing at the end of it. Talk to them.

It doesn’t matter what you tell them. You can say that you won’t rat them out to Don Pianta, or, inversely, you can tell them that you are. It doesn’t matter. Once the discussion is over, return to Don Pianta. At that point, the couple will burst in and hijack the conversation. It’s a pretty mild scene. Cute even. This is a Mario game, after all.

In any case, Don Pianta will excuse the couple through some more veiled threats. Afterward, he’ll give you the blimp ticket. You can disem??bark through the area no?rth of West Rogueport.

If you find the item limit in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Switch to be too miniscule, you may be horrified to learn that it was smaller in the GameCube version. While y?ou can fit 15 gewgaws in your pockets on Switch, it was 10 on GameCube. Either way, it isn’t a lot, and you may feel as though it’s difficult to manage your offense and healing items in such limited space.

Thankfully, there’s a way to expand this. It isn’t too difficult, but it i??s time??-consuming.

With that in mind, I’d like to point out that you can access a storage box at every item sho??p. You can store away whatever doesn’t fit in your pockets and go back for it when it’s needed. I get it, tho??ugh. Traipsing back and forth to the item shop to pull out your banked items is annoying, so let’s talk about expanding those pockets.

In order to expand your inventory limit and carry more items in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, you need to reach floor 50 in the Pit of 100 Trials and get the Strange Sack. The Pit of 100 Trials can be found underneath Rogueport t?o the left of the Star Chamber. You have?? to use your paper airplane ability to get there. There are detours available, but they mostly require you to break giant blocks with your mallet.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Strange Sack
Screenshot by Destructoid

The Pit of 100 Trials has you taking on one gro?up of foes each floor you descend. You can only quit every 10th floor, and each time you start, you do it from the very top. So, to get to the 50th floor, you need to do it in a single run. The enemies that inhabit t?hose floors don’t get too terrifying, but the time it takes to get to level 50 can be a pain. I was able to make it to level 50 just before the end of Chapter 3, but It can take over an hour to make it that far.

Once you have the Strange Sack, your inventory is doubled. You can now hold 20 items, which is also the maximum of the GameCube ?version. This means that, while you start with more space in your pockets on Switch, the Strange Sack will only bring you to parity. Considering items can’t stack, that’s still not a lot, b??ut it should get you through.

Levelling up Mario in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door works like any other RPG. You gain enough experience (Star Points here), a??nd eventually he’ll become more powerful. Your partn?ers, on the other hand, need a bit of extra love.

If you are unable? to level up your partners, you’ll find they quickly become a liability. While you can keep Mario out front to be the primary target for enemies, some attacks will hit both your party? members, and take them down quickly. So, you’ll need some way to make them hardier, and badges only go so far.

To level up your partners, you need Shine Sprites. If you’re familiar with Super Mario Sunshine, these are what you collect to advance in the game. They look like suns, essentially. In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, they come in boxes you need to bop to collect.

Each partner upgrade requires three Shine Sprites. Once you have three, you need to go to Merlon in East Rogueport (the house right next to Professor Frankly). Talk to him, and he’ll allow you to apply those Shi?ne Sprites to one of your partners.

Leveling up a partner? increases their HP and will teach them a new move. Now they??’ll be able to keep up in battle.

How to level up a partner a second time

At first, you’re only going to be able to level up a party member once in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. However, they can be leveled up again later if yo??u first find a special item.

Right before (or during) Chapter 6, you can speak with Merlon who will give you a clue that points you back to Hooktail Castle. If you return to the room with all the spikes, you can find a wall on the far side with a crack in it. Blow this up with Bob?bery’s ability and you’ll find a room with the “Up Arrowin it.

Take the Up Arrow back to Merlon, ??and he’ll then be able to upgrade your partners a second time. This requires an additional? three Shine Sprites. Leveling up your partner a second time provides them with more HP and another skill.

That’s as far as you can upgrade them, though y??ou can still make them more powerful through the use of badges.

Chapter 4 of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has you visit Twilight Town and Creepy Steeple. Everyt??hing seems to be going well. Mario and the gang get the star, and it seems like the chapter is at a close. That is until it’s revealed that Mari??o’s body has been snatched, leaving him as a shadow.

Venture back to Twilight Town, and you’ll be confront??ed by the fiend. He’ll give you a fighting chance, however. Guess his name, and you’ll get your body? back.

I could just give you his name, but it won’t do you any good. The ke?yboard he provides to you to type his name in is missing the lower-case “p,/strong> and you won’t be able to spell it out without it. The key is locate?d in the same place as his name, so buckle up.

A fight will ensue, but just run away (you have no choice) and head into?? Twilight Town. You’re going to need Viv?ian.

How to recruit Vivian in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

You find Vivian in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door in Chapter 4, and you’ll ?need her skills to complete it. She’s been getting bullied by her sisters, and now they’ve given her the task of finding their doomsday device, the Superbombomb.

She doesn’t recognize Mario in his shadow form and asks him to help. You need to search through the grass, pounding down each tuft of it with your hammer. Eventually, the Superbombomb will pop out. It might seem like a bad id??ea, but giv?e it back to Vivian.

As it turns out, the Superbombomb is broken. Mario then explains to V??ivian that his name has been stolen, and? she agrees to help. She joins your party.

Where to find the p Key in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

You’re going to need Vivian’s field ability to find the name of the fiend who stole Mario’s name (and body) in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. First, you’re go?ing to need to eavesdrop on the crows around Twilight Town. Simply walk under a tree and press X to have Vivian draw you into the s?hadows. The crows will then speak freely. You won’t learn the name, but they will say that it can be found under Creepy Steeple.

Return to Creepy Steeple, but don’t enter through the front door. The well in front of the gate is boarded up, but you can butt stomp (ground pound) through this. I’ll bet you did this already because it’s?? pretty conspicuous, but the solution to its sliding gate puzzle would stump you without Vivian.

To solve the puzzle, you have to push the metal door up the hill for a while. It doesn’t need to be all the way. Once it’s high enough, have Vivian pull you into the shadows, and the door will slide back over you. Pop back out a?nd you’re now on the other side o?f the door.

Go through the wooden doo?r, then roll up and go through the narrow path. At the end of it is a wooden hatch on the floor. Pound through it, and you’ll find yourself in a gated hallway. Go left, then roll yourself up again to squeeze through a small hole at the bo?ttom of that wall.

You’ll find yourself in a room with a parrot and a few chests. In the far chest is the coveted letter p. Stand under the parrot and have Vivian hide you again. The parrot will talk freely and drop the bodysnatcher’s name: Doopliss.

You have the letter p and the name you need. Leave and continue back to Twilight Town. You’ll be ambushed at the usual spot. This time, enter the name Doopliss into the prompt, and the fiend will panic. He’ll ru??n off, still with Mario’s body.

You can probably guess where he went. Head back to Creepy Steeple (again). Climb back up to the top where you ??first fought Doopliss. He’ll be there again, this time ready to fight alongside your former companions. Vivian will put th??ings together and realize that you’re actually Mario. She’ll run away at first, but she’ll return for the fight. Mario is the only person who has ever been kind to her.

Take down Dupliss and, this time, you??’ll actually get the star with no strings attached.

At the end of Chapter 5 and before the beginning of Chapter 6 in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, there’s a vignette with Princess Peach. During this, you’re a?sked by TEC to mix a potion to turn Peach invisible. It’s a puzzle, and lik??e any puzzle, it’s possible to get stumped, so here’s how you do it.

First up, you need to grab all the beakers in the room. There are four of them, each a different? color, and they’re all on the table. You don’t have to pick up and use th?em one at a time, so just grab them all and stuff them in your pocket.

Next,?? you have to figure out the pattern to place them in. There are notes around the room that will give you clues on how to arrange them. The most important ones say not to put the red potion on the right, and to keep two potions between red and green. Because there are only four spots, you know that green and red will be on the extreme sides, and if red can’t be on the right, that means it’s on the very left with green on the very right.

You need only one more clue after that, like the one tha?t says place the blue potion next to th??e red. The leaves one spot that you set yellow into.

That means the pattern is:

Red->Blue->Yellow->Green

How to create the invisibility potion in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door

Once you have the beakers set in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, it’s time to mix them. TEC will give you instructions. You start the machine, then the nozzle will go from one bottle to another. You need to pres??s the button under the nozzle to fill the bottle.

The trick is here that the nozzle doesn’t just go from one bottle to the next, it sometimes moves back and forward. That doesn’t complicate things a whole lot. You’re ??given plenty of time to press each button, so just watch where the nozzle goes, step in front of it, and push the button.

The tricky part is where you need to let the mi??xture heat for exactly 30 seconds, then press the button to turn it off. While TEC uses the word “exactly,it isn’t as strict as it sounds. You can be a few seconds late and it will still work.

However, there’s no in-game timer to watch. The machine supposedly beeps every second, and you could count in your head if you’re good at that sort of thing, but it’s easier just to use a stop watch. There is a very very high chance that your phone has a stopwatch. If not, there are sites with stopwatches available for free. That’s the power of the future; suddenly we all have ??stopwatches.

In any case, if you got the timing correct, the concoction will come out bright green. Any other color you’ll just want to dump and try again. Scratch that, you should drink any failures, as some of t??hem have quite amusing effects. Regardless, you’ll be able to try again immediately, so don’t stress about it.

Once it’s done, Peach will turn?? invisible, but her clothe?s won’t. She has to take her clothes off, which sounds pretty relaxing right about now.

My time as a Nintendo fangirl playing on a GameCube feels like the halcyon days. Between Metroid Prime, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Eternal Darkness, and F-Zero GX, I was always deep into something that ??would endure as an all-?time favorite.

Then I remember those were also the years I?? was in high school, which were years of trauma that helped shape me into the mess I am today. That’s maybe why those games shine brightly in my memory; they were backed by total darkness.

Speaking of which: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. A 20-year-old high-water ?mark that t??he series may never return to.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the second in the series, and the follow-up to â€?bear with me here â€?2000’s Paper Mario. The series started off as something of a successor to Super Mario RPG. In fact, the original working title of Paper Mario was Super Mario RPG 2, and thatâ€?™s how I first saw it in an issue of Nin?tendo Power.

What the se??ries have in common is a simplification of the JRPG format. Aside from that, they??’re almost entirely different approaches.

However, the story is rather familiar. Mario has to collect seven stars. Stars tend to be the solution to all of Mario’s problems. At this po??int, the narrativ?e framework has been so well-trodden that it actually points fun at it, by having Luigi embark on an extremely similar MacGuffin gathering quest that he’ll tell you about at the start of each chapter.

Luigi’s quest actually sounds a bit more interesting. Not that the one in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is terrible or anything. B??ut everything is better when Luigi is in??volved.

//youtu.be/gCV-uTRULn8?feature=shared

Th??e story kicks off (and largely takes place) in Rogueport. The characters describe it as a wretched hive of scum and villainy, which is already kind of a hilarious concept in a Mario game. Sure enough, the infrastructure is crumbling, people who skulk in dark alleys talk about how much they love crime, and gangs talk about holding dominion over a small chunk of the town’s four blocks.

The town sits on top of ancient ruins, and in these ruins is the eponymous spooky door. Allegedly this door holds great treasure, so Princess Peach, like all monarchs, wants this treasure for herself. But also like all monarchs, she doesn’t want to do it herself, so she mails it?? to Mario while she pursues her passion of getting kidnapped.

Mario, the ever-obedient working-class hero, sets off and immediately starts solving people’s problems in?? return for Crystal Stars and things you can just find on the ground. Really, the story doesn’t throw any huge curveballs that you c?an’t see telegraphed from a mile away. In fact, one of its best pieces of exposition has you guessing the twist in dialogue.

But it’s the journey, and not the reason for it, that makes Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door so memorable. Each of the game’s chapters could be thei?r own episodic game, as while they’re linked by the central mechanics, they are each largely self-contained and entirely unique. I don’t want to spo??il it for anyone who didn’t play the original 4 release, but you’ll probably come away with your own rankings of all the chapters.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Night Sweats

The combat uses a unique system where everything is played out in front of a live audience. Your party consists of Mario a??nd his partner, though that partner can be swapped out mid-combat. It brings in the hallmark of all Mario RPG systems, by which I mean “timed hitsor “actionsas they’re simply called. You perform these by either press??ing a button at the correct time during an attack, or playing a short mini-game.

There are also stylish moves ??for appealing to the crowd. Your ultra-special moves require star power to perform, and that means exciting the audience. The more audience members you have, the more star power you get when you rile them up. It’s not as complex as it maybe sounds, but it’s a fun extra layer on the otherwise simple turn-based combat.

Outsi??de of?? combat is similarly simple. Dungeons don’t get too devious, though there are plenty of secrets enticing you to stick your finger into every nook. It makes use of the paper aesthetic to have you peel away scenery or turn into a boat to traverse water hazards.

What I find interesting is that, while Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door la?cks complexity, it’s also not as signposted as modern games. You can get a hint from your partner, but there are times when it will stop you and force you to think about what you’re supposed to be doing. I don’t just mean when solving puzzles, either. It will sometimes ask you to recall where you met a specific character or what happened earlier. You can always ask for a hint from your partner, but sometimes they’ll just tell you to think hard about one particular spot. It struck me that a lot of modern mainstream games won’t ask this of you.

The dialogue is what makes Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door really excel. Like most RPGs, the world is infested with? NPCs, but most of them here are given a lov??ing touch to bring them alive. Each one has its own priorities and fixations, and they’re all just so bitchy.

You generally expect that a Mario game is going to keep on its kid gloves, and to an extent, The Thousand-Year Door does. There’s nothing graphic or explicit, but some of it pushes the line. It can often be quite cutting, or just extremely clever. There’s a depth to it that makes even Mario’s bizar??re, fungal-centric world seem real. But most of all, you can tell that the writers had a lot of fun with it. It’s awash with personality, something else that tends to be lost in mainstream games of today.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Mom turns into a pig.

For those of us who did play the 2004 original, there’s enough in the Switch version to?? make it worthwhile. While much of what made the original so special remains unchanged (though, I didn’t see the scene where the robot spies on Peach showering), there are some additions that go beyond just being a simple upscaled port.

The weirdest is actually the graphical upgrades. A lot of small details have been redone, which is nice. But for some reason, part of the overhaul is to make everything slightly reflective. Like, it’s still paper, but it’s glossy or laminated for some reason. To be fair, it looks really good. It was very pleasing to my brain to see these gentle reflections on every surface. However, I think the idea behind the Paper Mario aesthetic is that it’s a collection of hand-crafted dioramas. I don’t know anyone who crafts with gloss?y paper.

The new soundtrack is extremely helpful, however. There’s a badge you can get early on that allows you to change to the original soundtrack, but I don’t think the nostalgia is worth it. The new compositions generally stick to the tracks from the original, but it’s greatly expanded. This is best demonstrated through the battle theme, which changes depending on the section of the game you’re in. It’s always the same tune, but the instrumentation is different in each area, providing a new twist. Considering Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door can take aro??und 40 hours to complete, not having to listen to the exact same music every time comba?t starts is welcome.

Beyond that, there are other tweaks to the gameplay, some of which I can’t r?eally get into. It’s not a complete overhaul, but it is a slightly more comfortable experience.

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Bowser Section

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is the seriesconcept delivered with maximum effectiveness. The games have seen their ups and downs since then, and that’s partially because they had to find a new direction. They could keep revisiting the same formula, but it’s hard to improve on perfection, and even that would get old after a ??while.

But the fact that Paper Mario did diverge after The Thousand-Year Door makes this remaster even more effective. It’s been absent for 20 years, and the new territory that has been covered since then hasn’t resulted in the discovery of the same magic. It’s a new opportunity to see the seriesapogee. It’s a reminder that while the JRPG-lite approach has its limitations, with the right? voice, it can really sing.

Twitter user Wario64, who frequently highlights gaming related deals, recently shared a post sent them to by a Walmart customer who had been informed by Walmart that they wouldn't be getting their pre-order for the Paper Mario remake. Is it because of stock shortages? No, instead Walmart's email says it's because "Nintendo will only be offering this item in stores." So, Walmart will have copies of the game, but customers will only be able to bu?y it in-person once it launches on May 23. As an apology for the cancellation, Walmart is offering $25 off affected customers' next purchase.

The phrasing makes it sound like this was Nintendo's decision rather than Walmart's, but that doesn't make it any less perplexing. Especially since, at the time of writing, the Paper Mario remake can still be pre-ordered online at other retailers, such as GameStop, Best Buy, and Target. Walmart's website, meanwhile, says the item is out of stock. That said, the game's also been unavailable at Amazon US too for at least a month, with customers on Reddit reporting it had cancelled? pre-orders due to a lack of inventory.

We've seen some suggest that this is Nintendo's way of preventing Paper Mario from breaking its street-date. In the past, retailers have shipped some games to customers early, resulting in gameplay footage and s??tory spoilers being posted online. However, we've contacted Nintendo for an official comment on the situation, and will update this article if we get a response.
