Popular World War II grand strategy title Hearts of Iron IV is getting its sixth expansion pack. Paradox Interactive revealed Götterdämmerung, the upcoming expansion that will revise the German focus tree to allow the most played faction to have even more choices o??f direction including takin??g Germany down a monarchist, a restored democratic, or even an alternate fascist path.

//youtu.be/X35yPqws-vk

It certainly makes sense for Paradox to revamp Germany's Focus Tree in HOI4, as other countries have gotten bigger tree revisits in recent expansions, and Germany is the most-played country??. Austria has also received a revised Focus Tree, allowing players to vie for freedom from German control as well as rebuilding the Habsburg Empire with surrounding countries.

Two countries are also receiving new Focus Trees for the first time, essentially making them new options to play as. The first one is H??ungary, where players will have to use technology to overcome the manpower shortages in the country. Players who succeed can eventually reform the Austro-Hungarian Emp??ire and create a powerful unified faction in doing so. The second country getting a focus tree is Belgium. As Belgium, players can resist or welcome German supremacy and then draw on the wealth of the Congo.

Aside from the new and revised Focus Trees, HOI4 is also getting some love with various systems. Special Projects will allow?? players to build scientific facil??ities and pursue advanced research by assigning scientists to them. A new Raid function allows you to attack specific targets with carefully planned strikes such as ports, industrial structures, research facilities, and more, hitting them with targeted bombing strikes, commando raids, and paratroop attacks.

The Hearts of Iron IV: Götterdämmerung expansion is set to release on November 14, 2024 for $24.99 on PC. This expansion is also part of the HOI4 Expansion Pass 1 as well.

It's hard to believe we've had 8 years of Stellaris, but it's true. Since releasing back in 2016, Stellaris has nine core expansions, a single narrative expansion (Astral Planes), and about a dozen content packs including story-specific content and new playable species. The newest expansion, Stellaris: Cosmic Storms, adds new dynamic Cosmic Storms that affect gameplay, a new Origin, Storm Chasers, 3 new Civics, and some new technologies built around the new storm mechanic. Through and through, it's more Stellaris, which is always a good thing.

Into the Eye

As the title of the expansion would suggest, Stellaris: Cosmic Storms' main big new feature are its new dynamic cosmic storms. There are eight unique storms in total: Electric, Particle, Gravity, Magnetic, Radiant, Stardust, Shroud, and Nexus. These storms com?pletely replace the old existing Space Storms, which were rather inconsequential in their former structure.

Let me start by saying, each of these storms are absolut??????????????????????????ely stunning graphically. Most of them add a swirling particle effect of colors that really light up entire systems, often with chaotic flashes of lightning and other cosmic explosions throughout the storm as it circles an area.

Each storm has a general effect that affects your systems in the storm, regardless of the actual storm type: +0.2Monthly Devastation to y??our planets and increased Emergency FTL Damage Risk, but then there is a slew of other pros and cons based on which of the eight storms it is. For example, a Magnetic Storm incr??eases station and ship upkeep but reduces Metallurgist Upkeep.

As you can imagine, depending on where the storm hits, what sort of empire you're building, and what stage of the game you're in, the storm can be a huge headache, a nice buff, or rather meaningless. In the end, I think that the biggest issue I have with the s?torms, is depending on when and where they hit really changes how big of a deal they actually are, but of course, that's the intent.

An all-new ascension perk, c?alled Galactic Weather Control, allows you to generate Cosmic Storms manually using your Science Ships. This can be a pretty big boon if you have cloaking technology researched and placed on your Science Ships, because you can cloak i??nto enemy territory and start generating some destructive storms.

One of the biggest problems with the storms is their duration. In most cases by the time I start to move things around to try and optimize t?he impact of them hitting, the storm ends and I'm just left with the aftermath effects, not the?? meaningful modifiers that existed why they were raging on. I get wanting the storms to have a more randomized and unpredictable effect, but I feel like there needs to be a bit of a balancing act between their randomness and being able to capitalize on them.

I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore

Anytime I see a new Stellaris expansion get announced, I quickly look to make sure there's a new Origin I can look forward to trying it. In Cosmic Storms, Storm Chasers is that new origin. Traditionally speaking in Stellaris, some Origins are big gameplay changers, paving the way for unique builds that can really add some new build potential. Others, however, are more story-focused or even just provide some unique mechanic that add a new element of gameplay to the core Stellaris experience.

I'm no min-max expert at Stellaris, but the Storm Chasers origin feels like more of a flavorful narrative origin than one of the game-changing options. Goin?g with Storm Chasers gives you a weather map overlay to track cosmic storms, as well as see their effects. As you advance through technology, the map improves, eventually even showing you forecasts so you know when and wh??ere storms will hit certain systems. You become a galactic meteorologist, essentially.

You also get a few storm-focused benefits like an increased chance for storms to spawn in your borders, a higher chance of getting storm-related re??search options, and more unity per storm building that you build. However, being a fearle??ss Storm Chaser also results in a shorter lifespan for your leaders, and they are less effective in council positions. In return, your entire species gets a trait called Storm Touched, which adds 10% of resources from Jobs, and reduces Amenity usage by 10%. The benefit certainly outweighs the negative, but it's certainly no game-changer like Clone Army, Necrophage, or Progenitor Hive.

It's a cool origin option if you really want to have some insight into the new Cosmic Storms as they work their way across the galaxy, but the benefits pale in comparison to some other origins, which is why I think this is more of a fun option than an impactful one. Storm Chasers almost feels like an origin dedicated to going, "Hey, let's go full-fledged into seeing what's new ?with these storms."

Riding the galactic waves

In the end, Stellaris: Cosmic Storms is a very unique DLC, for better and worse. The new storms certainly add a new element that you'll have to learn and adapt to while playing. But in a lot of ways it ends up just? adding some more difficulty, and in some cases tedium. For veteran players, I imagine the added diffic??ulty will be appealing to shake up the game, but at the same time, I can't help but wonder if some players will simply opt to disable this DLC unless they really want to do a playthrough with the storms enabled.

The beautiful visuals of the storms single-handedly elevate the Stellaris experience, and I can see some real potential from the new storm system if Paradox continues to build on and expand it, adding more opportunities to earn rewards for properly handling the storms or even making it a more streamlined risk/reward system. But in its current form, Cosmic Storms falls a bit short of being a "must-have" Stellaris expansion like Utopia, or Apocalypse. That being said if you're like me and just always want more Stellaris, there are plenty of entertaining layers in Cosmic Storms? t??o make it a worthwhile addition to your the best grand strategy space game on the market.

[These impressions are based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher.]

The long and fraught journey of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines' sequel is adding another entry today. Developer The Chinese Room and Paradox Interactive have confirmed Bloodlines 2? is pushed to the first half of 2025, out?? of this year.

The news arrives via a development update from the developer and publisher, showing some more in-development and behind-the-scenes footage of the game. Alex Skidmore, creative director at T??he Chinese Room, says the team is in the late production phase, "iterating and polishing" what's there.

But as Paradox's Deputy CEO Mattias Lilja states, the publisher has "reaffirmed" its commitments to delivering quality games, and that does apply to Bloodlines 2.

"We have learned a lot through the past year, and that is why we are putting our words into action," said Lilja. "Jointly with Chinese Room, we have decided to extend development. This decision gives Chinese Room extra time to spend on the game, to deliver the best Bloodlines 2 they can."

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxFk0g11a6c

As Lilja states, The Chinese Room is "prioritizing polish over release date," and it sounds like the delay could result in more than just fine-tuning. While the team is incorporating feedback from playtests and dev diaries, Skidmore says The Chinese Room is working on adding more endings to the game as wel??l.

A long, cold night

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has been on a long, long trek to this point. Originally announced at GDC in 2019, under the direction of Hardsuit Labs, the long-awaited sequel to Troika's c?lassic RPG see??med set for success.

Yet delays soon set in, and the departures of high-profile developers—including Bloodlines veteran Brian Mitsoda—foreshadowed harsher developments. Paradox pulled the project from Hardsuit, with layoffs at the studio following soon after, and the project languished without a confirmed developer for a spell until The Chinese Room inherited it in 2023.

Known for games like Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, it's a curious choice. Even some elements of the original Bloodlines 2 pitch shif?ted in the transfer, like changing the player character's role f?rom a thinblood to an awakened elder.

If time really can heal all wounds, then maybe a little more development time can help The Chinese Room deliver on a Bloodlines sequel. After years of fraught development, I'm just curious to see what comes out the other side. Bloodlines 2 is now slated for the first half of 2025.

While storm systems already exist in Stellaris, the new Cosmic Storms expansion adds 8 new types of Cosmic Storms that replace the existing Space Storms and randomly spawn across the map. Less than five months after the release of developer C Prompt Games and publisher Paradox Interactive's 4X title Millennia, the historical-turn-based game's first expansion, Ancient Worlds, has been released today. Released alongside the expansion is Update 5, which adds mod support and more to Millennia.

//youtu.be/MtRoczdjW6A

The Ancient Worlds expansion adds an all-new Nomadic Band start, allowing players to start their Millennia run as a band of unsettled travelers, scavenging t??he frozen terrain of the post-Ice Age world for natural resources until they feel strong enough to settle down and start their actual society. Ferocious Megafauna stalked the frozen tundra,? threatening the nomadic tribes' very existence but also allowing for some unique new events and experiences.

A new national spirit, Messengers, will be available as an Age II National Spirit that puts emphasis on early game diplomacy. You can give gifts to rival nations, gather resou??rces from minor nations, ensure their independence, and reap benefits from a new Llama special resource. Using the new Band Society starting government, you can opt to take short-term bonuses to boost your tribal camps as opposed to building up your homeland, utilizing a Nomadic Band to scavenge the terrain and settle an additional Capital Region via this new start.

With the release of Ancient Worlds, Millennia has one more DLC, Atomic Ambitions, scheduled as part of its 202??4 roadmap that is expected to be? released in Q4 2024. The DLC will launch alongside Update 6 which adds Steamworks Mod support, a Strategic Warfare system, Simultaneous Multiplayer, and much more.

The Millennia: Ancient Worlds expansion is available now for $9.99. For those who purchased the Millennia expansion pass, it is included with it.

Paradox has announced that the console version of Cities: Skylines 2, planned for ?release in October, is being pushed back to an unspecifi??ed time.

“We have not yet met the stability and performance targets we set for the console release,the statement reads. However, the port is making “slo??w but steady progr??ess.They’re expecting a release candidate to be ready for August, and if that is up to standards, they can begin the certification process. However, they aren’t able to give a more specific date.

Cities: Skylines 2 had a troubled release on PC last year. Among the complaints against it were performance issues, but the problems went a lot deeper than that. Over time, Colossal Order has been patching issues, recently releasing the a href="//jbsgame.com/cities-skylines-2s-massive-economy-2-0-overhaul-has-arrived/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Economy 2.0update, which overhauls a lot of the game’s systems. There are still prob??lems, and performance isn’t where it should be, but this feels more like h?ow it should have been at launch.

As much as this is a bum?mer for console players who want to start their urban planning, I feel like the initial growing pains should serve as a warning about releasing games before they’re ready. If anything, it’s heartening to see that Paradox and Colossal Order are delaying things to ensure that they’re where they want it to be. Maybe a lesson has been learned.

Cities: Skylines 2 is current??ly available for PC. It is coming to PS5 and X??box Series X|S sometime later.

It was already disappointing to hear that Sims competitor Life by You had been indefinitely delayed, but it seemed the behind-the-scenes situation was grimmer than we thought. Earlier this week, Paradox Interactive announced it had not only cancelled the game, but had shut down developer Paradox Tectonic too. In the wake of this, though, one member of the now defunct studio has c??laimed that progress on the game was going much better than it sounded.

As spotted by PC Gamer, one Willem Delventhal took to LinkedIn to say that the team at Paradox Tectonic were doing "extremely well" ahead of Life by You's planned early access launch on June 4. After having already been delayed once before, the game was suddenly put on an indefinite hiatus, followed by the ??aforementioned cancellation.

"I cannot share specific numbers, but I can say that we had an internal metric we were aiming for that had been approved, and that we exceeded that number by a significant portion," wrote Delventhal. He added that they "got a thumbs up a few weeks before launch," which makes it sound like the delay was as much of a surprise to the team as it was to fans waiting to play Life by You.

By comparison, Paradox Interactive CEO Fredrik Wester, when explaining the reasons for the cancellation, had said Life by You? would not be able to meet the company's expectations and that "a version that we’d be satisfied with is too far away." This doesn't match up with what Delventhal is alleging. By his account, everything was going incredibly smoothly, especially if they were exceeding internal targets, yet Paradox pulled the plug anyway. Deventhal has also claimed he and his ??team were never told why their studio was closing: "Instead we spent a month in purgatory, and did everything we could to prove to them we were worth launching, including things like finding potential buyers or suggesting cutting ties and going indie. We heard virtually nothing back."

It must be stressed that Delventhal's comments do not represent the rest of Paradox Tectonic; he is only speaking for himself, and has refrained from sharing his own theories on? why the project was ultimatel??y canned. However, he did add, "This industry has become a place in which you can deliver more than expected, have AA money behind you, and still have the rug pulled two weeks before launch."

The games industry is most certainly in a rocky state; in fact, calling it rocky is a massive understatement. After all, a distressing number o?f people have been laid off ??this year, and that number has only increased thanks to the closure of Paradox Tec?tonic.

Less than a day after publisher Paradox Interactive canceled Life by You, the company announced that the game's developer Paradox Tectonic is shutting down.

The news was delivered earlier this morning by the publishe??r. Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox, called the move, which affects 24 people, "difficult and drastic," and ??shutting down the studio was a "tough decision."

"This is difficult and drastic news for our colleagues at Tectonic, who’ve worked hard on Life by You’s Early Access release," Wester said. "Sadly, with cancellation of their sole project we have to take the tough decision to close down the studio. We are deeply grateful f??or their hard work in trying to take Paradox into a new genre."

Paradox Tectonic is shutting down after Life by You cancellation

Paradox announced the cancellation of Life by You yesterday. In a quote, Wester said the game would not meet expectations: "A version that we’d be satisfied with is too far away, and therefore we are taking the difficult decision to cancel the release." The decision resulted in an estimated $19.8 million write-down for the company, which has seen other trouble as of late. Last year, the company announced it would write down The Lamplighters League for approximately $23 million a week after the game launched.

It has been troubling all around. Paradox Tectonic's shuttering feels like another stone in the road for an industry that has already experienced a lot of job loss in 2024 and we're only halfway through the year. Just yesterday, before the news of the Life by You cancellation, Embracer Group announced the closure of Alone in the Dark (2024) developer Pieces Interactive. Microsoft closed down the Hi-Fi Rush developer Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin (along with Alpha Dog Games) ahead of its big June showcase. Needless to say, the move dampened the excitement before the show.

Paradox Interactive announced today that the upcoming The Sims competitor, Life by You, has been canceled. Originally announced back in March 2023, Life by You was to be the debut title for Paradox Tectonic, an in-house Paradox development team led by former The Sims head Rod ??Humble. The canc?ellation resulted in a MSEK 208 write-down in Q2 for Paradox which according to Google Conversion is roughly $19.8 million.

Rough times for new IPs at Paradox

Paradox Interactive has long been considered the power player when it comes to grand strategy and 4X title releases, with hit franchises like Stellaris, Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings, and Europa Universalis. However, recently the company has expanded its scope and begun publishing and developing more titles in the strategy genre, but not necessarily grand strategy. In October 2023, Paradox published a turn-based tactical RPG titled The Lamplighters League but just one week after release also wrote it off as a loss due to poor sales.

With Paradox willing to outright cancel Life by You instead of putting in the time and resources to get it where they want to be, it seems as though the project may have been far off from where the company hoped it would be. Life by You was originally scheduled to be released into Early Ac?cess in September 2023 but was delayed to March 2024, then June 2024. Just a few weeks before its intended June release, Paradox revealed the life s??im had been delayed indefinitely, and now we know why.

For a long time, we’ve held hopes for Life by You and the potential we saw in it, but it is now clear that the game will not be able to meet our expectations. A version that we’d be satisfied with is too far away, and therefore we are taking? the difficult decision to cancel the release. Moving forward, we should perform at a much higher level, and it’s obvious that we have work ahead of us.

- Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive

Fans looking for a new life sim will now have to wait and see what The Sims 5, codenamed Project Rene, will turn out to be.

Life By You has once again shifted its Early Access date, only this time wi?thout a new release window in sight. The life-sim game was set for an Early Access launch on June 4, but that has since been pulled due to the additional need for more development.

The Deputy CEO of Paradox Interactive, Mattias Lilja, made the announcement and ind??icated that this shift was a dif??ficult choice.

"After much consideration, we regret to announce that we have decided to retract Life by You’s Early Access release date, previously set for June 4th. This was not an easy decision, especially since we understand the anticipation and excitement that many players have for the game. However, we ??believe that ?additional development time is needed.

While we would have preferred to commit to a new release window, we be??lieve it is more prudent to hold off while we plan ahead, rather than committing to a new date that we cannot be certain to meet."

This is the third time Early Access has been delayed, and some fans are wondering when it will ever make its official debut, if the social media replies are anything to go by. Though, some are also lauding the choice to take time to work on the life-sim.

The previous delay noted some issues with its Early Access, including problems linked to bugs, performance, and character art. These errors have likely caused the delay again, especially with the mixed reviews from some of Life By You's development updates.

Life By You isn't the only Paradox Interactive entry to be delayed, considering Prison Architect 2's May 7 release was pushed back to Sept. 3. Cities: Skylines 2 has also bee?n catching some heat, where players believe it was released too ea?rly with its many broken specs.

Considering Cities: Skylines 2's "Mostly Negative" score on Steam, Paradox Interactive may not want the same result again with Life By You. Hopefully, all this waiting will be worth it, giving us life simmers more content. Information regarding its launch may be coming shortly, but it seems like its launch hangs in the balance for now??.

You wouldn't think a sci-fi game that was released in 2016 with tomorrow marking its 8th anniversary would still be kicking it in this cut-throat industry. However, Paradox Development's Stellaris has seen an uptick in ??popularity recently, and fa??ns can probably guess why.

Back in March, it was announced that the game was getting a new expansion in the guise of The Machine Age. Well, that time has now come, as the DLC released yesterday. As a result, Stellaris has jumped up the Steam Top Sellers list. At the time of writing, it's sitting at num?ber three, having shot up a hefty 44 places. The new content itself is also up and down on the chart.

//twitter.com/StellarisGame/status/1787877232918073695

To add to this, the game is on sale over on Steam, where you can pick up a copy for a generous 70% off. That goes hand-in-hand with the DLC, I reckon. Also, The Machine Age comes with Season 8 of Stellaris, if that tickles your fancy.

What's in the new content?

A comprehensive breakdown goes into s?ome detail about what exactly you'll get with the DLC. For starters, there are three new origins: Cybernetic Creed, Synthetic Fertility, and Arc Welders.

On top of this, there's a new Player Crisis Path and a new Endgame Crisis, which is d?escribed thus: "A tempest rages in space, a Fallen Empire goes dark, and a long-forgotten enemy emerges to shake the foundations of power."

If nothing else, it shows that eight-year-old games can still keep their collective heads above water with expansions and extra content. Now all I need to do is actually play Stellaris to see what all the fuss is about.

Publisher Paradox Interactive announced today that the debut title by Paradox Tectonic, Life by You, will hit Early Access on June 4. Revealed in March 2023, Life by You gives players the creative freedom to design their own characters then build their homes and live out their lives, similar to popular long-running Electronic Arts series The Sims.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9c3WEYTJIU

Fans of The Sims have had their eyes on Life by You since its announcement due to its similar approach but potential freedom to do more. While The Sims 4 seems to be in a never-ending DLC-release cycle—I'm not exaggerating when I say there is over $1,000 of DLC at this pointem>Life by You instead focuses on what makes life simulator games so fun in the first pla??ce: creative fr??eedom.

The life simulator also features deep Creator and Editor tools such as its Character Creator, Object Designer, Language Trees, and more, allowing ease of access for players to create, customize, and even mod Life by You to fit their story. Former Electronic Arts Executive Vice President and Head of The Sims label at EA Rod Humble thinks this is what makes Life by You so special.

"At the core of Life by You is the player community. We’ve created a sandbox where players can tell whatever story they want. From deeply personal, esoteric, or fan fiction, they can live life to the fullest - or break the rules as they see fit!/p>

- Rod Humble, General Manage of Paradox Tectonic

In development since 2019, Life by You had ??originally scheduled to enter Early Access earlier this year in March. However, the team opted to del??ay Early Access by about three months to put some finishing touches on the visuals and further improve the gameplay.

Life by You enters Early Access on Steam and the Epi?c Games Store on June 4?.

Cities: Skylines 2 was the hotly anticipated sequel to the seminal 2015 hit, but it stumbled and fell flat. With bugs aplenty, no mods, and performance issues, there was much for the developer to work on. Now, Cities: Skylines 2's modding support is finally available at least.

Of course, Cities: Skylines 2 did have a slew of unofficial mods beforehand. Still, it wasn't until the latest update - patch 1.1.0f1 - that Colossal Order finally added full-featured support with an in-game mod browser and beyond. This is good, in and of itself, but the community reports that the implementation is sadly half-baked, with mods not activating, the?? UI freezing, and a whole assortment of other problems to deal with.

Image via RaftermanNZ

Official modding support for Cities: Skylines 2 is now available, but there's some trouble afoot

As per the official announcement from Colossal Order, Cities: Skylines 2 version 1.1.?0f1 comes with support for two all-new pieces of paid content (Beach Properties Asset Pack and the Deluxe Relax radio station), a number of p??erformance improvements and assorted bugfixes, and proper modding support.

More specifically, Colossal Order says to have delivered all of the following mod?? functionality:

  • Code modding support
  • Modding toolchain installation and status, for the creation of code-based mods
  • Support for Map Creation editor (import/export height map, resource map, climate, water sources, etc.)
  • Support for Paradox Mods, allowing creators to share code mods, save games, and custom-made maps

This is phenomenal news in its own right, of course, but the community is not too thrilled wi?th the current version of the feature. Most users agree that the in-game mod browser is exceedingly slow and unreliable, and worse yet, there is the major problem of mods not activating.

Some players report that restarting Steam and validating Cities: Skylines 2's game files can resolve this problem, but this potential solution hasn't caught on with the community just yet, so there may be more to the issue than ??this could solve. Whatever the case may be, the fact that Colossal Order has delivered proper and official mod support is a major step forward for the game and?? should allow the community to resolve its biggest problems as the developer works on stability, performance, and DLC.

Paradox Interactive announced today that its popular space grand strategy title Stellaris is getting a new machine-focused expansion titled Stellaris: The Machine Age. Scientists have discovered advanced means to commune with machines, enabling life to overcome the biological limitations of minds and flesh. The Machine Age is developed ??by Paradox Development Studio and?? coming soon on PC.

//youtu.be/MSunS8wpU54

New Origins

Three new Origins, essentially starting parameters in Stellaris, are coming in The Machine Age.

  • Cybernetic Creed â€?/strong> Your empire pursues a divine calling: the holy fusion of the body and cybernetics. Augmentation is worship.
  • Synthetic Fertility â€?Once a thriving society, a novel genetic disease leaves your empire unable to reproduce biologically. Digital salvation seems the only option to avoid extinction.
  • Arc Welders â€?Hailing from a world starved for space, a robotic society turns to the stars for resources.

Alongside the new Origins, The Machine Age also includes new reactive portraits, 6 new Civics, 2 new mid-game structures (the molten Arc Furnace and powerful Dyson Swarm), new Population Traits??, and seven brand new music tracks.

New Endgame Crisis, Crisis Path, and more

For the first time in a while, a new Endgame Crisis has been added to Stellaris in the form of a new synthetic threat. Also, a new Crisis Path will allow players to become the threat t?hemselves.

Previously in Stellaris, machine empires were required to use the Gestalt Consciousness Ethic. However, that's no longer the case as machines can have individual personalities and more diverse stories and origins. Machine empires also have access to?? three new Machine Ascension Paths, further building upon the ability to create a machine empire.

Stellaris: The Machine Age does not have a relea?se date but according to Paradox i?s coming soon on PC.

Paradox Interactive today revealed all-new details for Victoria 3's first expansion: Sphere of Influence. In Sphere of Influence, rapid technological and societal changes of the Victoria Era allows empires to compete in new lands and with new means. The expansion has a handful of new features inc??luding the ability to create your own Power Bloc and then bully, bribe, or befriend other nations to get them to join.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9yae-7XGqA

The Great Game

Sphere of Influen?ce also focuses on The Great Game, a 19th-century rivalry between the British and Russian empires over influence in Central Asia. Players can use Prestige to become a Great Power and create their own Power Bloc, from which they can dominate other nations in diplomatic arrangements or use the bloc to pursue common economic or ideological goals.

Players also have the opportunity to ?play as any of the powers central to The Great Game conflict, including Persia and Afghanistan. The map has been redrawn to highlight the many competing interests during The Great Game.

Other features of Sphere of Influence include Foreign Investments, Nationalization, Subject Interactions, Interest Group Lobbies, and many more systems built aroun??d the new Power B?loc feature.

I've got about 30 or so hours in Victoria 3so far and have been waiting for an update like this to jump back in. The ab??ility to ccreate a Power Bloc will really change up the strategies you can use to effectively grow your empire, and I'm excited to see how it all works.

To celebrate the news, a Trains Bonus Content Pack with ten new 3D models for trains from the early days of steam to the golden age of rail is available to download for free for anyone who owns Victoria 3.

Victoria 3: Sphere of Influence is set to release ???on PC on May 6, 2024 for $29.99.

Paradox Interactive has announced that they’ll be handling publishing duties for XperimentalZ GamesEscape the Mad Empire under their Paradox Arc (al??ternative game publishing??) label. It’s set to launch into early access sometime this year.

Escape the Mad Empire has been quietly in development for quite a number of years now. However, with that sweet, sweet PR budget, there’s now a nice new trailer for us to watch and a demo to play. Both of these outline the uniq??ue action/strategy mix that is? put to use.

//youtu.be/vfAMyyyVmsA?feature=shared

I played a bit of the demo since I wasn’t able to fully grok the gameplay based on the trailer. While Escape the Mad Empire is a loot-heavy roguelite, you control a party of adventurers. However, this isn’t a turn-b??ased affair. The action plays out in real time. However, to enable you to control multiple peeps, you can use tactical pause to stop time, and issue commands that instantly get carried out when you unpause.

It’s a neat little system that keeps things moving while also giving you the ability to pull off big attacks against hordes?? of enemies. There's also a cover system that encourages movement, so your spellcasters don't have to stand out in the open like dumbasses. I haven’t played past the tutorial in the demo, but it leaves a goo??d first impression.

Escape the Mad Empire is p?lanned to launch into Early Access sometime in 2024. The demo is available now.

Legends of the Dead

The first new content as part of the third chapter is the Legends of the Dead core expansion. Available March 4, the expansion adds new activities, events, and features to the grand strategy game. New f??eatures include:

  • Legends: Commission an epic retelling of your family history or build your own heroic reputation through great deeds. Promote this legend, far and wide, and see how the stories of the past reverberate through the centuries, and add even more glory to legendary dynasties.
  • Legendary Playstyle: Leverage your living legend status through new Decisions and actions, keeping the stories of your family in the minds of a continent, strengthening the legitimacy of your rule and allowing further choices.
  • Legendary Buildings:  Your legendary reputation gives you access to new elite buildings, cementing your legacy for future generations.
  • Legendary Feasts: Poets and bards can ornament your celebrations with songs and odes to your greatness, inspiring your guests to spread the tale of your legendary generosity.
  • Court Chroniclers: Hire an official historian to spread the story of your dynasty’s great accomplishments, or use your poets and musicians to turn your actions into art.
  • Two New Legacies: A new Heroic dynastic Legacy for the heirs of legendary characters, even using the great deeds of ancestors to justify claims from the distant past, as well as a Legitimacy Legacy that promotes your dynasty as the true rulers of the realm.
  • Illness and Mourning: New diseases like the Bloody Flux, Measles and Holy Fire may ravage your court, but you can honor your deceased loved ones with dignified Funeral rites, according to your faith.
  • The Black Death: The greatest scourge of the Middle Ages strikes down noble and commoner alike, radically transforming the political and social environment. Prepare your realm and prepare your soul, because a rampaging plague may be the strongest enemy facing your rule.
  • New Art: Both life and death are given new energy with the celebrated art style that Crusader Kings III fans have come to appreciate. A new exclusive Map Table, new varieties of clothing, unit models and holding designs for extra flavor.

Into the Future

After the release of Legends of the Dead, another major expansion and an event pack are still in the plans for 2024. The first, Roads to Power, is a Byzantine Empire-themed expansion. Players can rule Constantinople through a new Administrative Government form and experience new Byzantine-themed events and flavors. With this expansion, you'll?? also have the ability to live your life roaming the map as an adventurer for hire, a first for the series.

In the Wandering Nobles event pack, Crusader Kings 3 looks to build upon the travel s??ystem introduced in the Tours and Nightmares event pack. Wandering Nobles adds a new travel system and new ways and reasons to travel including new incide?nts and stories.

Crusader Kings 3: Legends of the Dead will be available on March 4, while the rest of the new conten??t is scheduled over the rest of 2024. Those interested can pre-purchase the Chapter 3 Expansion Pass and ga??in immediate access to the free Couture of the Capets cosmetic clothing add-on.

Build a New Hemispheric Power

Launching alongside the DLC pack is update 1.5. The massive update will rework warfare, companies, and how local prices works in Victoria 3. According to the video for the DLC, this is the biggest update to milit??ary, economy, and diplomacy in the grand strategy title yet.

The Colossus of the South region pack is a narrative-driven pack centered around the Amazon River as South America enters the Victorian Age. Features ??of the pack include:

  • Reign of Pedro II: Historical actions highlighting the reforms and ambitions of Brazil’s Emperor Pedro the Magnanimous, including the abolition of slavery and the modernization of Brazil’s economy.
  • The Old Republic: The power of Brazilian landowners and the emergence of the Positivist revolution against the monarchy.
  • Populism: Challenges to the agrarian oligarchy in Brazil from anti-government bandits and the populist Integralist movement.
  • National Awareness: Development of a unique and diverse Brazilian culture, as well as expansionist goals in Paraguay, South American unification from Gran Colombia, and Pan-National movements of the Federation of the Andes and Rio de la Plata.
  • Amazonian Riches: Exploit the riches of the Amazon while avoiding international conflict and national disorder.
  • New Historical Characters: Coup leader and general Deodora da Fonseca, populist dictator Getulio Vargas, and more.
  • More content for South America: New events and journal entries and flavor for many countries in the region!

I played Victoria 3 when it originally launched and while I enjoyed it, I really had a hard time figuring out some of the things that w?ere going on. Apparently a lot of that has been fleshed out since, so this region pack seems like a great time for me to jump back in and give it another shake.

Victoria 3: Colossus of the South releases on November 14 for $5.99. Players who purchased the Grand Edition or have a subscription to the Victoria 3 Expansion Pass will be able to access the region pack a??t no additional cost.

The story-centric expansion will feature branching narratives, a first for Stellaris. Players can navigate a branching narrative built specifically to make choices matter. According to Paradox, Astral Planes will be full of surprises and hard choices. Decisions will not only affect the narrative but also?? shape the player's empire to fit their playstyle.

In terms of gameplay features, Astral Planes will feature new Technologies, Actions, and Relics, which is p??retty par for the course for this type of expansion. It also appears there is a new Origin called Riftworld.

Stellaris is my favorite Grand Strategy game, so any new content looks good to me. But depending on how the Astral Planes actuall?y works, this could set the 4X title up for even more content avenues in the future.

Paradox Interactive and Harebrained Schemes have announced that the two companies will be parting ways. This comes after Paradox expressed disappointment with the performance of The Lamplighters League. Paradox had acquired the company in 2018.

This is all kind of shocking to me, simply because it doesn’t seem like that long ago that Harebrained Schemes was acquired. However, following the launch of The Lamplighters League, Paradox said that they’d be taking a write-down on the production, as they don’t expect to recoup the development costs. Destructoid’s own Steven “Big LifterMills has a pretty great write-up of that here.

Charlotta Nilsson, CCO of Paradox said, “We and HBSleadership have been discussing what would happen after the release of The Lamplighters League, but a new project or sequel in the same genre was not in line with our portfolio plans. Hence, we believe that a separation would be the best way forward./p>

Meanwhile, Harebrained Schemes expects to continue supporting The Lamplighters League through the end of the year and will be seeking p??artnerships and funding beyond tha??t.

//youtu.be/ZmTIDxl4OwM?feature=shared

A different strategy

Harebrained Schemes was founded in 2011 by Shadowrun creator Jordan Weissman along with Mechassault producer Mitch Gitelman. The company seemed to be set on revisiting FASA’s old properties, being known for the Shadowrun Returns trilogy and Battletech. However??, following the acquisition in 2018, Weissman left the company.

The Lamplighters League is a new property from the developer, but following lukewarm reviews, it has not performed to expectations. Personally, I’m puzzled by it. I have always kept one eye on Harebrained Schemes (mostly with hopes of another Shadowrun title), but I had no idea that The Lamplighters League was even launching. While many of the game’s features have been called over-ambitious, much of t??he community’s complaints seem to be about technical issues and day-one DLC. Those sound like publisher problem??s.

Nonet??heless, I’m hoping this isn’t the last we see of Harebrained Schemes. This outcome is at least better than the company being shuttered outright.

Set and primed to release on October 24, the new Cities: Skylines game might launch with some potentially big problems, according to the developer. As per Colossal Order's latest announcement, the studio has decided to hit its targeted release date even though this means launching with less-than-stellar optimization. In other words, early adopters of the long-anticipated city-builder may end up struggling to ??run the game properly on day one.

This information comes from Colossal Order's recent forum announcement, where the post ??states: "Cities: Skylines II is a next-gen title, and naturally, it demands certain hardware requirements. With that said, while our team has worked tirelessly to deliver the best experience possible, we have not achieved the benchmark we targeted." It's really not phenomenal news, but the fact that Colossal Order is being up-front about it merits kudos, for sure.

Is Cities: Skylines 2 going to have bad performance on day one?

Colossal Order's announcement that Cities: Skylines 2 might run poorly on PC on day one comes not long after the significa?nt bump-up in the game's system requirements. Colossal Order's recommendation is now for players to come packing some serious hardware, all things considered, with the RTX 3080 and the Ryzen 7 5800X being the recommended GPU and CPU, respectively. The fact that the devs would go on to provide further clarification on the game's performance even after this sugges??ts that things could be rough early on.

"In light of this," says Colossal Order's announcement, "we still think for the long-term of the project, releasing now is the best way forward." The statement also adds that "[Colossal Order]?? will continually improve the game over the coming months, but [the studio wishes] to manage expectations on performance for the coming release. Our ambition is for Cities: Skylines II to be enjoyed by as many players as possible, and we're committed to ensuring it reaches its full potential."

It's not all bad news, of course. The very same post also goes into considerable detail on Colossal Order's modding plans for Cities: Skylines 2, saying that "while the modding tool [for Skylines 2] will have a basic framework at its inception, we are dedicated to its continuous expansion and enhancement, making it a central focus of our development efforts moving forward." Console players, too, will be getting access to mods, which is the silver lining to the fact that the console build of Skylines 2 got postponed, to boot.

Just one week after its release, Paradox Interactive has revised its sales? forecast for The Lamplighters League. In a public statement, Paradox Interacti??ve revealed they would be writing down capitalized development cost on the turn-based RPG. The publisher announced it plans to write?? down MSEK 171, or roughly $15.7 million USD.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZmTIDxl4OwM

Per Investopedia, a write-down is an accounting action that reduces the value of an asset to offset a loss or expense. The write-down is based on a revised sal??es forecast established after the? game's release.

The statement goes on to reveal the capitalized development costs of The Lamplighters League to be MSEK 320, which equates to about $30 ?million USD. The newly revised sales forecast puts the fourth quarter profit impact estimates for the game at MSEK -248, which is just ??shy of $23 million USD.

"The Lamplighters League is a fun game with many strengths. Even though we see cautiously positive player numbers in subscription services, the commercial reception has been too weak, which is frankly a big disappointment. Game projects are by their nature always risky, but at the end of the day we haven’t performed at the level we should. It is painful but makes us more eager to roll?? up our sleeves and do? better."

-Fredrik Wester, CEO of Paradox Interactive

Essentially, Paradox is saying The Lamplighters League is off to a slower start, so it's writing down expenses a??s a loss it doesn't expect to immediately recoup. Paradox Interactive is a publicly traded company. As such, they are obliged to disclose this information pursuant to the EU Market Abuse Regulation (EU nr 596/2014).

As a reminder here, The Lamplighters League just released a week ago on October 3. Hopefully, this is just Paradox Interactive mitigating its own economic risk, and not a sign of things to come in a recently hectic industry.

Paradox Interactive announced today that the company will publish Foundry, a factory-building sandbox simulation game by Channel 3 Entertainment. In Foundry, players are tasked with using their imagination to build an efficient factory in a procedurally-generated sandbox. Prior to the announcement, Foundry had climbed to the top of itch.io as a top-selling game. The game can be compared to similar factory-building titles like Satisfactory and Factorio. Players start at the bottom of the technological totem pole, having to manually mine and process reso??urces. Eventually, you unlock the ability to craft new machinery, develop technologies, and automate your entire production line.

A new demo for Steam Next Fest

Paradox also revealed a new demo will be available for Foundry during next week's Steam Next Fest which takes place from October 9 to October 16. Players? can jump in solo or with friends to build efficient production lines and self-sustaining factories.

"The overwhelmingly positive feedback we received from the Foundry Alpha on Itch.io was encouraging and highlighted the game's immense potential. To fully realize this potential, it was essential to collaborate with the perfect partner. Being published by Paradox Interactive allows us to fulfill the vision and ambitions we have for Foundry.

- Patrik Meder, Vice-president at Channel 3 Entertainment

I'm a huge fan of Satisfactory and Factorio, so I'll definitely be checking this one out. Based on the above announcement trailer, it seems like a fine-crafted hybrid of the two. Of course, being first-person and 3D makes you initially think Satisfactory. But the intricate production lines remind me more of Factorio. I'm also curious to see what sort of features can ut?ilize the? voxel-style world, which is a first for the genre.

No release time frame was given for Foundry, but once again the new demo will be available for one week starting October 9. Those interested in playing can download the demo via the Foundry Steam Page once Steam Next Fest begins.

Vampire: the Masquerade - Bloodlines 2 has awoken from its long slumber, with a new studio and release window in tow. Over the weekend, Paradox Interactive confirmed that Bloodlines 2 development is?? in the hands of ??The Chinese Room, with a release window of fall 2024.

Bloodlines 2 has been quiet for some time, following what could only be considered a tumultuous development. After delays, departures of its leads, and eventually Paradox removing Hardsuit Labs from the sequel, the Vampire succes?sor has found a new home with The Chinese Room.

It's an interesting pick, as The Chinese Room is well-known for its narrative adventures. The studio produced Dear Esther, Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, and Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, and is working on another horror experience, Still Wakes the Deep. Now, it's taking ove??r the sequel to a cult-classic RPG.

Sleepless in Seattle

My immediate question was how much we'd see of Hardsuit's Bloodlines 2 work in The Chinese Room's version. In an interview with PC Gamer, Paradox VP of World of Darkness Sean Greaney and Bloodlines 2 creative director Alex Ski?dmore talked a bit abou??t it.

While Greaney says they "have been able to reuse a significant amount of art and level design" from Hardsuit's work, Skidmore clarifies that The Chinese Room is utilizing "a new code base with different gameplay mechanics and RPG systems." You can see some of the original vision in the re-reveal. There's a look at the snowy holiday atmosphere and its initial Seattle setting. And while The Chinese Room is a surprising pick for an RPG, Skidmore brings some experience; he was a lead designer on Gears Tactics and worked on the Fable series, per PCG.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=2clSTM3UvTo

Where the original Bloodlines 2 pitch had the player taking on the role of a recently turned "thinblood," The Chinese Room's Bloodlines 2 wil??l star an "Elder" vampire. We're d?ue more information soon, as a gameplay reveal is set for January.

It's a shame we won't see Hardsuit's vision, but I'm still curious to see what The Chinese Room makes of a Bloodlines sequel. It's an interes?ting choice, but the studio does seem to be doing something a little different in an intrigui??ng way. We'll learn more in January, ahead of a planned fall 2024 release for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

As we get closer to the Cities: Skyline 2 launch, developer Colossal Order has been highlighting various features of the city builder with weekly video releases. Today's video highlights the new Game Progression system which looks more in-depth than the original Cities: Skylines.

There are? 20 milestones in total that you can strive for with each one unlocking new rewards. Unlocking a milestone will earn you some cash as well as some expansion permits and development points.

Expansion permits allow you to add new tiles to add to your city, expanding the bounds in which you c??an build your metropolis. You can also use expansion permits to check out? the exact resource and quality aspects of a prospective tile.

New development points system introduces progression trees

The addition of development points is where it looks like progression in Cities: Skyline 2 will really shine. Development points are required?? to add city services such as fire departments, water and electric utilities, educational buildings, and more. Each city server has its own unique tree that you will spend development points on to unlock new buildings. As your city grows and the demands of your population change, you will have to unlock new buildings to address them. The further down the tree you progress, the more advanced each building is offering higher levels of sophistication and specialization.

For example, when addressing the transportation needs of your population, you will first unlock basic transportation services like buses. However, from there you will have to choose from several options. You could choose to unlock trains, trams, and eventually subways. Or, you could go down the water tree and unlock boat?s or even the air tree and unlock planes and eventually even a space center.

Also, it looks like milestones will progress differently in Cities: Skyline 2. Cities: Skylines progressed and unlocked milestones based simply on reaching new population highs. Bu int Cities: Skyline2, each milestone requires a certain amount of XP to unlock it. According to the video, you'll unlock XP passively based on population happiness as well as actively by investing in your city and placing key buildings or building up infra??structure like roads.

I saw some pretty interesting-looking buildings on the development tree in the trailer. I'm not exactly sure what I'll be able to do with a Large Hadron Collider, but I'm excited to find out. I'm excited to see what other cool things we can unlock via progression in Cities: Skyline 2.

Cities: Skylines 2 releases on October 24 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Se??ries X|S.

Warm towels

Paradox has announced the last stops in its Cities: Skylines “World Tourcontent push that will bring us to the end of the DLC for the game. The big ticket item here is the Hotels & Retreats mini-expansion, but there ??is also a slate of Content Creator Packs coming with it. It’s all set to drop on May 23, 2023.

Hotels & Retreats does essentially what it says on the tin. Sort of. It enables you to plop hotels in your city and run them. This runs in line with previous expansions like the Campus one that gave you things that would, I expect, be largely outside of your municipal power. I can’t see the mayor/city planner getting involved in the day-to-day of managing a hotel, but that’s what this expansion asks you to do.

You start with a small 1-star establishment, then unlock upgrades to expand it to a must-see tourist hotspot. You’ll then unlock various other types of hotels, like hostels and cabins, as well as supporting tourist buildings. Location? is key, as certain hotels will bring in specific tourist groups.

This seems like it will be a completely missable expansion to a lot of people, but I’m personally very excited about it. I love service management games, so mixing that in with my favorite urban city-builder is just so appealing.

Creator Content

These are some inter?esting Content Creator Packs, too.

From Samantha “AvanyaWoods comes the Industrial Evolution pac????k. This includes growable industrial buildings that draw from both historical and modern sources.

Next is Railroads of Japan from Ryuichi Kaminogi. As the name suggests, this offers several items ??to make your rail system more like Japan’s legendary commuter system. This includes stations, trains, and buses. I’m probably most excited about this pack, because I have no end of appreciation for Japan’s rail.

Finally, there’s Brooklyn & Queens from creator Prosper. This one is also pretty self-explanatory as it adds a number of growable buildings inspired by the boroughs of New York City. This is quite a timely set since Brooklyn features prominently in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

On top of this are a couple of radio stations, which are probably less interesting because, if you’re like me, you just switch off the music and play your own in the back??ground while ??you build.

End of an era

This all marks the fact that attention is now moving to the recently announced Cities: Skylines 2, which is set to drop this year. Developer Colossal Order pledges to continue the support for Cities: Skylines through to the end of th??e year. However, it’s unlikely it will see any new content past that.

At the same time, I don’t expect Cities: Skylines 2 to launch with all the extra features that the first game built up. It could be a while before we see hotels again. Hopefully, all the new features of the sequel will make up for that. Otherwise, you can always wait eight years until ever?ything drops.

All of the above will launch on May 23, 2023.

That's right, it's a Tournament arc

Crusader Kings III is setting out for some new festivities in May. The next Crusader Kings III expansion, dubbed Tours and Tournaments, debuts on May 11, 2023.

While Crusader Kings has had plenty of courtroom drama, this particular expansion looks to add some pageantry to all of it. Host a royal wedding! It's never gone poorly for anyone, ever. Head out on tour,? or yes, even hold your own tournament. I'm sure leaving your kingdom in the hands of a cunning and ambitious seat-warmer will certainly turn out fine.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=ATwJhpy_FQw

It's not all just events planning, though. The new travel system will include route planning, which means determining how fas??t you want to travel v?ersus how safe your charted course will be.

Additionally, Knightly Accolades are getting a spotlight, as are some new armor? designs and clothing. Fashion is crucial, even at a sometimes bloody tournamen?t.

Expanding your borders

The Tours and Tournaments expansion for Crusader Kings III will go for $29.99, and will launch alongside a "major" free update for all CKIII players. Or, if you prefer a more deluxe route, you can also pick up the Chapter II pack.

The Chapter Packs for Crusader Kings III tie in a few extra updates, big and small, for $34.99. Picking that up now will immediately garner the Elegance of the Empire Pack, with historic regalia inspired by real-life rulers. Further on down the road, alongside Tours and Tournaments, Chapter ???II pack-owners will get the Wards and Wardens Pack as well as the Legacy of Persia pack.

Basically, a lot more grand strategy is on the way for a pretty solid grand strategy game, from what I've heard. Tours and Tournaments arrive for Crusader Kings III on May 11.

That's a lot of responsibility

As promised, by way of livestream, Paradox has given us all the juicy, wriggling details on their upcoming life simulator, Life by You?. This includes not just how the game will play and the approach it will take but also its goal ?of releasing in an Early Access state on September 12, 2023.

//youtu.be/ZNhV-Gnjdy8

Life by You is an open-world life simulator that looks to move in on The Sims territory. You create your families, design their houses, and dictate their lives. That’s pretty much The Sims, but Paradox Tectonic is trying to differentiate Life by You in quite a few ways. The most disturbing to me is that conversation will be held using real language rather than the gibberish Simlish utilized in Maxislegendary s??????????????????????????eries. Outlined is a conversation creator that allows you to choose how your person reacts in different situations.

One of the features that stuck out to me is the ability to directly control your humans in a third-person control mode. This feature hasn’t been available in any of the mainline games of its closest competitor. However, a few of the console and handheld versions have allowed this, such as The Urbz and The Sims 2. I like the option. I have two modes of playing life simulators, and those are direct? immersion and storytelling.

Customization seems to be the central design philosophy. You can build the town of your humans to your liking, including homes and businesses. There’s a variety of different creators built in to allow you to tweak things to your liking. They’re also touting the integration of mods, which has been something EA has always been a bit cagey on with The Sims.

Life by Me would just be a trainwreck

It’s absolutely bizarre to me what a creative monopoly The Sims has had on the life simulator genre. Some of the ways that Life by You is breaking from the formula initially strike me as sacrilege, but upon reflection, I can’t see why. I even had difficulty not referring to the “humansin this game as “sims./p>

[caption id="attachment_369497" align="alignnone" width="640"]Life by You Character Creator Image via Paradox Interactive[/caption]

Rob Humble is involved, bringing with him some life simulator clout. He was producer during much of The Sims 2’s and was a big pla??yer at EA Games during that time.

There isn’t much reason why I shouldn’t love Life by You, but so many of my expectations are hung up in The Sims. I’m definitely going to try and get over that and give Life by You a try when it drops.

So far, Life by You has been announced for PC. It will be arriving in Early Access on September 1?2, 2023. You can pre-order it for $39.99 on the Epic Game Store, but it will also be launching on Steam.

Stop the cult, save the world

Harebrained Schemes, the studio behind Battletech and the Shadowrun Returns trilogy, has a new strategy game. Today, Harebrained and Paradox revealed The Lamplighters League, a pulp fic??ti?on adventure that mixes stealth and strategy with quite a look.

Announced as part of today's Paradox Announcement Show, The Lamplighters League definitely has an XCOM sort of vibe to it. You manage?? a motley crew of misfits, all working together to stop the Banished Court ?cult from taking over the world.

As the tagline notes, "Unfortunately, the best of the best are all gone, so now it's up to the best of the worst." Today's announcement trailer emphasizes that?? a bit, as your team are not quite pristine heroes, so much as endear??ing rapscallions.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7oq0_dIRiU

Each team member brings their own skills to the field, and the action takes on a mix of modes. While you infiltrate in real time, combat ?plays out in turn-based order. It's a pseudo-real-time-with-pause that I've come to like a lot, actually.

Mixed in all of this is an alt-history 1930's aesthetic that reminds me of those classic globetrotting, treasure-hunting stories. The pulp style is a neat one, and definitely a departure from the likes of Battletech.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnTjWoFvmzg

Don't put this in a museum just yet

Add on some mentions of injury and stress that I spotted in the Steam Store description, and The Lamplighters League seems like a pretty neat entry in the strategy genre. Harebrained Schemes did some solid work on the Shadowrun trilogy and while I've yet to try out the big mechs of Battletech, I'm definitely intrigued by today's reveal. The Lamplighters League could be something a bit different and unique for strategy fans to keep an eye on,?? as we learn more.

The Lamplighters League is expected to hit PC and Xbox Series X|S sometime this year. Also confirmed today for Paradox fans were a new life-sim and Cities: Skylines 2.
