Hideki Kamiya, one of the founders of PlatinumGames and the creative mind behind Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, and the Viewtiful Joe series i??s leaving the studio he?? helped create, according to a post on Twitter made by Kamiya and one made by PlatinumGames. Kamiya’s resignation is effective October 12.

//twitter.com/platinumgames/status/1706201875564130785

“We are truly grateful for [Kamiya’s] creative ideas, leadership, and contribution to the growth of PlatinumGames from our start-up to this very day, said the Bayonetta and Nier: Automata developer in a post on Twitter. It goes on to wish Kamiya success “in his future endeavors as a game creator./p>

//twitter.com/PG_kamiya/status/1706202627531489367

In a post made to his personal Twitter account, Kamiya elabora?ted on his decision to leave Platinum, saying “this came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs. and was by no mean??s an easy decision to make, while also confirming in a reply that he will continue to create “in my Hideki Kamiya way. This, plus the studio’s well wishes, seem to suggest that Kamiya will continue creating games.

Kamiya has become notorious on Twitter for his liberal use of the block button, making it very clear that, among other reasons, responding to him in any language other than Japanese would earn an insta-block.

Kamiya’s career began with Capcom, where he served as a system planner for the original BIOHAZARD, known in the west as Resident Evil. He then went on to become the chief game designer and director for the sequel, BIOHAZARD 2 / Resident Evil 2. Kamiya, Viewtiful Joe producer Atsushi Inaba, and the creator of Resident Evil Shinji Mikami would create Seeds in 2006, the studio that would merge with Tatsuya Minami's Odd Inc. to form PlatinumGames in 2007. It was there where Kamiya would work on titles such as Bayonetta, The Wonderful 101, and Astral Chain.

Just when you thought the game couldn't look more promising

On Sunday night Square Enix hosted a Final Fantasy XVI pre-launch celebration stream. Early in the stream, fans were presented with two special video clips, featuring some of the high-ranking personnel connected to both developer PlatinumGames and to Square Enix' RPG franchise Kingdom Hearts.

The first was from PlatinumGames Inc. President and CEO/S??tudio Head Atu?shi Inaba.

"PlatinumGames was graced with the opportunity to develop a part of Final Fantasy XVI. We'd never had an experience to work on a title in this manner, so it certainly took us by surprise when we were first approached. But the development staff myself included, were all extremely excited for this opportunity, saying things like, 'it's the Final Fantasy' and 'we'll never get another chance to work on Final Fantasy.' So we gladly acce??pted thi??s opportunity and made it happen.

Takahisa Taura, who worked with Square Enix previously on NieR: Automata, led the development staff and the team on the PlatinumGames side. He powered through thee development as leader of the team,?? and I'm confident that the part we handled ended up being a high quality content.

We were able to work on Final Fantasy XVI with excitement as creators, but we only partially handled the development, so we're also looking forward to playing the content as individual fans, just like those that are watching this video. And so, I am looking forward to enjoying the fantastic world of Final Fantasy XVI as both a creator and a fan.

Our sincerest congratulations!"

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNXD3J3vmqw

Immediately following the first clip, a second was played featuring the Co-Director of Kingdom Hearts IV, Tai Yasue.

"Hello everyone! I'm Tai Yasue, Co-Director of Kingdom Hearts IV. I'm happy to announce that, in fact, the Kingdom Hearts development team had a part in developing Final Fantasy XVI! We joined forces on the battles and such, but to be honest, it came as a surprise when the idea was initially ??brought to us. It seemed like a daring idea!

It's already hard to achieve a scale of this level while being an action-based game. And, it felt even craz?ier hearing their plan to join forces with development teams that each have different creative methods. I mean, even if it's coming from Naoki Yoshida, the man with an asteroid named after him, we were thinking about politely declining...

That being said, as we got to know more about the game's plan and story, the entire?? team wanted to make this work, no matter what. Although it was a wild undertaking, there was ultimate?ly something to gain through its development.

Now, Final Fantasy XVI's release is right around the corner. In a s??ense, it's been developed in an unconventional way, but in part, because of that, we feel it's shaped up to deliver an exceptional experience, s??o please give it a go! Thank you!"

So there we have it. Creative Business Unit III, PlatinumGames, and the Kingdom Hearts team all worked together to make Final Fantasy XVI happen. Yoshida went on to point out that the production scale of the game was so massive, and with a new action combat system, he felt they couldn't reach the intended scale without the fellow studios' assistance. For spoiler reasons, he declined to point out exactly what elements of FF XVI they worked on, but assured fans we'?d know after launch.

As if I wasn't already extremely excited for FF XVI, this makes me even more so. NieR: Automata is one of my favorite games of all time, and it nothing else had a stellar combat system. And while Kingdom Hearts III may no??t have been the best game in the series, it?? was still great and the combat was fun.

If you want to try out Final Fantasy XVI for yourself, a demo just released earlier today. Otherwis?e??, the game launches on PlayStation 5 on June 22.

What's the time? Witch time

After Bayonetta 2 hit in 2014, the series became so much more than just a one and done successor to Devil May Cry. It was a fully-fledged universe that many fans started to grab on to; as evidenced by the discussion behind the recently-released Bayonetta 3 story beats. Now it even has its own spinoff! Thankfully, it still keeps the sa??me witchy style intact, but with a considerably different genre shift.

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon (Switch)
Developer: Platinum Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: March 17, 2023
MSRP: $59.99

Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is an action puzzle game ??with a major emphasis on the puz?zle aspect.

Initially you'll control Bayonetta herself (Cereza) as part of a wonder years, witch-in-training prologue before picking up Cheshire; a demon companion that does most of the fighting, and a bit of puzzle-solving. The duo will work in tandem (independently through left analog stick control for Cereza, and right analog ??stick control for Cheshire), with Cereza using her magic powers to lock down enemies and create exploration-based opportunities, while Cheshire can more directly swipe at and damage foes. You'll need to dodge enemies with both halves, adding a neat wrinkle to the urgency of the action.

Slowly, you'll get acquainted with all of the game's mechanics, eventually gaining ?access to a skill tree for each character (which opens up advance moves like projectile countering and combos). In addition to moving the duo from each story-progressing sequence to the next, you'll wander around a forest playground of sorts?? connected by save points and challenge rooms: some of which require future abilities to fully complete.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=DF0TfX02Mw4

I was surprised at how easy it was to acclimate to the idea of Cereza and Cheshire working both together and separately??. Controlling them both is easy as the locales aren't too sprawling (albeit sometimes of a cramped variety), and it's rewarding to pull of even simple combos and clear simple puzzles. An example includes putting Cheshire on a lift raised by Cereza to unlock a seal on a chest; and having Cereza then ride the platform (raised by Cheshire) to grab the loot. These sorts of puzzles raise a bit in complexity over time, but it's nearly always fun to see a theoretical point A (the edge of a cliff) and point B (where the treasure is) and figure out how to connect the dots between the two.

Whoever thought of "hug mode" needs a raise. Using the L button, Cereza can grab and hug Cheshire's smaller stuffed animal form, which lets you move around the world as a sin?gle unit. It's a nice respite from controlling both characters, and is even directly woven into some of the game's puzzles. You can use it basically at any time, though you understandably may need to split them off for combat or puzzle-solving (like tos?sing Cheshire up a ledge in hug form to open up a path or avoid a substance that keeps Cheshire at bay).

As you progress and earn more tools of the trade, both combat and exploration get more interesting. Cheshire can sport multiple forms, which can be used to solve puzzles; and creates more open-ended situations where the solution to a particular collectible drop or a critical path puzzle is less obvious. After the hour-ish long first tutorial-like area Bayonetta Origins opens up more, but without feeling overwhelming or like ther??e's tons of padding. You'll come across a reasonable amount of collectibles du?ring your journey, and the paths don't become too labyrinthine and boring, even later on.

[caption id="attachment_368435" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

All along the way you'll get constant tidbits on Cereza's backstory, which in turn inform future Bayonetta timeline events. While you don't need to be a pure Bayonetta fan to really enjoy the mostly self-encapsulated story, it does help: especially during some of the game's more eventful series references. As someone who loves this world, it's interesting to see first-hand how ??Cereza grew ??up and the circumstances surrounding that, as well as what led to the imprisonment of her mother (and how she personally dealt with it).

Bayonetta Origins isn't a prestige drama by any means, but the entire vibe is extremely amenable to fans. There's always the risk of over-explaining things (which some fans took umbrage with in the third game), but the way Bayonetta Origins operates is relatively melancholy and muted, and doesn't quit?e sink to the depths of "just say the line!" depravity.

The bit that should appeal to pretty much everyone is the storybook aesthetic. It's so much better looking in motion, as the backgrounds really pop and feel alive i?n incredibly nuanced ways. The animation on Cheshire in particu?lar (especially when changing forms) is mesmerizing, which is fun to look at during some of the game's slower moments, and during the higher octane battles. I love how Cheshire clambers up walls and has exaggerated slashing motions: it feels true to Platinum's sense of "functional style."

[caption id="attachment_368439" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

At $60, the low key nature of Bayonetta Origins and the fact that some of it is going to appeal to Bayonetta fans isn't going to do it any favors. But when I was playing through it, I was reminded of a few '90s classics like The Lost Vikings and the quirkiness of the Gobliiins series. It's a really breezy game to play if you're enamore??d by the storybook look and feel, which does some of the heavy lifting.

The full game is still out on March 17

Bayonetta Origins, otherwise known as Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, is slated for release on March 17. Before that, yo?u can test out this interesting spinoff in demo form. It's actually out today, and will pick up from the opening moments of the game through "the early chapters."

Here?'s the full rundown of the demo from Nintendo:

"This is your lucky day. Or unlucky day, depending on how you play your cards, for the Avalon Forest is just as beautiful as it is beastly, and it has an appetite for wandering witches. In the Nintendo eShop demo, you can try out the early chapters of the Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon game. As a bonus, save data will transfer over to the fu??ll version of the game, when purchased,?? which launches on March 17."

Yes, you can transfer save data from the demo over to the full version of the game. It seems like it's a given for most larger IP these days (especially Nintendo games), but you never know! Also, there are accessibility options in tow: "The game also features accessibility options, such as reducing damage or automating some controls, that can help anyone (newcomers and Bayonetta fans alike) enjoy the game."

Babylon's Fall: born on a Monday, buried on Sunday

Alas, poor Babylon's Fall. The game has finally fallen down its final flight of stairs. As we reported nearly six months ago, the game's end of life arrived at the end of February, but folks are just now noticing that the studio published patch notes for i?t.

Available to peruse publicly on Steam, the Version 1.4.0 patch notes simply state:

  • End of service

The last patch the game hosted was all the way back in November of 2022, where the team reminded players that it would be the final update. Before that the team distributed a launch patch, a minor update shortly after release, and patches in April, May, and July of that same year. The "live ser??vice element" of the game essentially lasted from March 2022 until a few months later? in early September.

We hardly knew ye, Babylon's Fall

As someone who actually played Babylon's Fall from? birth (the beta) to death, it's sad to wonder about what may have bee??n. Had it not been conceived as a live service game, and if the powers that be gave it a bit more time in the oven, it could have been a cool stylized action romp from Platinum. The team could have moved on instead of spending time developing post-launch seasonal content (before or after launch), and a standalone release definitely wouldn't have scared off so many people from buying in.

Maybe The Suicide Squad game will meet the same fate? Stay tuned!

Feelin' Witchy

Somebody deserves a whole stack of lollipops PlatinumGames has proudly announced that its dazzling hack 'n' slash sequel Bayonetta 3 has smashed past one million global sales. The long-long-long awaited s?equel first launched?? on Nintendo Switch back in October 2022.

The sales milestone was modestly announced on the official PlatinumGames Twitter account, and sees the popular series' second sequel become the fastest-selling title of the Bayonetta series. The adventure sees the sultry Umbra Witch take on the powerfu??l "Homunculi" arsenal in an effort to prevent the very?? tearing of space and time itself. Over the course of the story, Bayonetta is aided by friends from alternate universes, as well as a young witch-in-training known as Viola.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RlGQM6PvHY&?;ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

After what seemed like an endless wait for release, Bayonetta 3 finally launched to a mixed, but mostly?? positive reception from critics and fans. While most everybody was pleased with the iconic and chaotic combat, as well as its seamless integration into the mise-en-scene, many fans were left a little disappointed by the story and the overall character arc for their favorite naughty spellcaster.

The next title in the series will be spin-off release Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and The Lost Demon. This c??utesy-looking title will see the young girl who would eventually become Bayonetta emba?rk upon one of her very first adventures, exploring the Avalon forest alongside her first demon companion, Cheshire. Bayonetta Origins will launch on Nintendo Switch on March 17.

Bayonetta 3 is ava?ilable right now, exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

Update 1.2.0 to the rescue

Just this past week, Platinum released the first major post-launch update for Bayonetta 3, and it was a doozy. Not only did it address some long-running concerns from the community for a few encounters (and Viola's moveset), but it also directly impacted a really low key aspect of the game: the playable teaser for the upcoming release Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon.

Here's a quick ??reminder of what that update actually changed:

Game Modes

  • Conditions for obtaining the “Tricolored Keysâ€?needed to unseal the “Old Picture Bookâ€?have been made easier.
  • “Tricolored Keysâ€?will be automatically available on the chapter select screen once it becomes possible to access the “Gates of Hellâ€?
  • Even if the player already has access to the Gates of Hell, or has already obtained one or two keys, they will automatically obtain the remaining keys when going to the chapter select screen after applying the update.

Accessing the Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon demo is much easier in 2023

As the Nintendo ?of Europe Twitter account pointed out this weekend, once you have the new update (1.2.0) installed, you can just buy the Old Picture Book from the Gates of Hell shop: no keys or added steps needed! Prior to the update, after buying the book, you needed to locate three hidden keys spread ??across several chapters of the game (Chapter 1, 4, and 13).

This takes me back to the bygone era where demos were king, and sometimes were selling points all on their own. While the Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon itself is very brief, it's c?ool to see more free unlockables ?in games, sans DLC. The action genre is the perfect host for it.

Niflheim is generally easier now

Bayonetta 3 came and conquered, but Platinum Games has been inf??requently tweaking the game since its October 2022 release. Beyond the initial day one launch patch, this week is the only time it's been adjusted in a major way: in this instance, via version 1.2.0, which was implemented late on January 10, 2023.

So there's a few things this patch addresses:

  • Combat adjustments that mainly apply to Viola
  • Nerfs to many Niflheim challenge stages (which a lot of people asked for, even on higher-end difficulties)
  • The Tricolored Keys/Old Picture Book secret is easier to access, as you just get the Tricolored Keys automatically now
  • Other minor game balance issues, as well as bug fixes

So the first two poin?ts are actually entwined, as many folks were frustrated with some of the Viola-specific Niflheim challenges. To accommodate, it is now easier to enter Witch Time with Viola, and it's been generall?y buffed. This has been a consistent point of contention and one of the biggest asks from the community.

Beyond that, the enhanced ease of accessing the teaser demo for the upcoming Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon is a smart move: especially since the initial hype of finding it the "secret way" has died down a bit. Plus, granular bug fixes in a fram?e-perfect action game are al??ways appreciated!

You can fi??nd the full patch notes here on Nintendo's official sit??e, or below.

Bayonetta 3 Ver. 1.2.0 Patch Notes (Released January 10, 2023)

    • If the Block input is used repeatedly, the granted Witch Time duration will decrease.
  • Adjustments made to prevent Viola's evasive input and Cheshire's summoning input from activating Assault Slave while maintaining invincibility if they are used in rapid succession.

I haven’t completed Bayonetta 3 yet, but it’s already everything I hoped it would be and so much more. The action is bat-shit crazy, t?he new characters are intriguing and well-acted, and the game is so damn fun it helps me look past its performance woes. I’ve played very few games where it’s so abundantly clear it was crafted with truckloads of tender love and care -- and in this instance, a pinch of perfume and gunpowder. Bayonetta 3 is the win PlatinumGames has needed in recent years. There's so much to discuss!

Our lovely cast from around the web: Brett Medlock (me) and Mary Stowe from Destructoid, John Friscia from The Es??capist, Greg Bargas from PC Invasion, and Brett Larsen, our extra spe??cial guest. Behind the scenes, GamursEric Weichhart is live-editing this week’s show.

Spot Dodge is a weekly Nintendo Podcast here at Destructoid where we dedicate an hour or two to go over the latest Nintendo news and discuss the games we’re playing?. If you’re a fan of Nintendo Switch, RPGs, or having a good time, Spot Dodge will be a great addition to your podcast rotation.

Spot Dodge is streaming live every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. ET on Destructoid’s YouTube and Twitch channels. Don’t be afraid to join the chat and be part of the show! Note: This week we're only streaming on the Twitch. N?ext week we'll have a dedicated Spot Dodge YouTube channel!

Afterward, the show will be available on-demand for audio listeners via Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and more. The live video version will remain on both YouTube and Twitch (don’t forget to fol?low and ?subscribe). So many options!

The short answer is yes you can dive in; but if you have time, playing the first two would be ideal

If you asked a member of the Platinum marketing team, they'd probably tell you that Bayonetta 3 as a standalone story that you can dive into. But if you asked Platinum dev and executive Hideki Kamiya, he'd urge you to play the initial two games first. The latter is mostly true: if you can play the first two, you'll get a lot out of it. If you play Bayonetta 3 first you'll mostly be fine, but there are bits and pieces from the original two games that will greatl??y benefit you??r enjoyment of the story, and certain character interactions.

Minor vague spoilers below in terms of themes, but nothing specific

In Bayonetta 3, the titular protagonist and her team are squaring off against a new threat: humanity. Or rather, humanity evolved, by way of "Homonculi." Bayonetta has essentially conquered hell and heaven in her original games (which are present throughout mostly in the form of challenge rooms), but this story is new, and most of it will be easy to glean/pick up as said threat is introduced. Viola, the new playable ??character, is also a clever way to usher in brand new players a??????????????????????????nd ground them to this third entry.

The action speaks for itself. Bayonetta 3 has myriad tutorials, as well an easier mode, and even an accessory that can do auto-combos (you just need to purchase it from the shop). By all counts, it's arguably the most accessible entry in the series from a mechanical standpoint. You can get the gist of what's happening through a lot of early exposition, ride out the adventure with Bayonet?ta's new adversary, and pick up the game while you're at it.

That said, where you're really going to get a lot out of playing the first two games is the emotional resonance of the final act, and the character interactions. A few people kind of just pop up, and especially toward the end of the game, you're meant to react to t??hem on a more personal level, and vibe with the narrative twists.

If you have the time, you'll likely get a lot more out of the last portio?n of the game, specifically the ending. But if you just want to play a g??ame with a good action foundation and come along for the ride, you can totally do that too: especially if you have no intention of revisiting the other two games.

"We apologize that we could not meet demand"

Bayonetta 1 Switch shortages for the newly minted physical editions are sadly plaguing the UK and? some regions in Europe, thanks to an exclusive rollout on the My Nintendo Store??.

Here's the full statement from Nin??tendo, on Twitter, issued today:

"We apologize that we could not meet demand for the physical edition of the first Bayonetta game recently. We will restock the physical edition of the first Bayonetta game once more later this?? year, on [the] My Nintendo Store.??"

The tweet then goes on ?to pro??vide a link for update registration here.

Meanwhile, in the US, Bayonetta 1 has been available at several retailers, and is readily in stock a??t the time of writing at Best Buy?. It actually went up for sale weeks ago (I got my copy a while back), and is holding stock. So the "limited quantities" Nintendo spoke of in the past seem to be region-based.

Outside of the regional Bayonetta 1 Switch shortages, this isn't the first hectic rodeo from a My Nintendo Store rollout. Xenoblade 3 was rife with access problems, with virtual queues that didn't work, or crashed randomly. Ideally Nintendo will stop doing ex??clusives like this in any region, as the demand clearly exceeds whatever Nintendo has in mind in terms? of a sustainable approach to taking pre-orders.

In the meantime, if you really want it and don't want to wait on a mystery restock window (or potentiall??y deal with a broken website again), importing from the US could be an option. Secondhand markets aren't se?lling it at obscene prices just yet, and some stores might ship overseas.

It mostly deals with Naive Angel Mode and leaderboards

A Bayonetta 3 patch has been release?d, just in time for the game's launch on Friday. The good news? It's short a??nd sweet.

So the first bit involves "Naive Angel Mode," whic??h, in the words of Platinum themselves, "lowers the amount of violence and sexual content." Apparently the day one patch will apply this optional? mode to "more scenes," and it can be enabled immediately when starting the game (rather than on the chapter menu after the intro).

Also, the leaderboard/high score functionality is now properly applied before launch. There are numerous ways to upload your? score: right after clearing a chapter and pressing "+," or selecting a chapter manually on the chapter menu hub, selec??ting play history, and pressing "+" after the fact.

Other than that, there's a generic "game balance and other adjustments" note, which could mean anything. You can find the patch notes below, courtesy of Nintendo Everything.

Bayonetta 3 patch 1.1.0 notes:

Game Modes
Naive Angel Mode, which can be activated to lower the amount of violence and sexual content, can now be used in more scenes. Also, Naive Angel Mode can now be activated when starting the game for the first time.
After starting the game, you can change the Naive Angel Mode setting from “Options > “Screen Display However, you cannot do so while in ??the middle of a chapter. You can change it either from the Title Screen or from “Optionsin “Chapter Menu

Online
High-scores and best times can now be uploaded in the “Online Leaderboardssection.
Here’s the various ways to upload your high-scores and best times:
Press the + button on the result screen after clearing a chapter
Select a chapter you’ve cleared as well as the difficulty level in “Chapter Menu“Online Leaderboardsand press the + button
Select a chapter you’ve cleared in “Chapter Menu“Play Historyand press the + button
If you obtain a “Platinumrating for your score or time before downloading this update, the score or time will be adjusted to match the target value of the “Platinumrating
The “Total Timefor each chapter will be revise??d if your time is faster than ??the target value.

General
Game balance has been adjusted.
Other adjustments were mad??e to improve the game play exp??????????????????????????erience.

Full Umbran circle

Bayonetta 1 and 2 are up there with Devil May Cry 3 and Ninja Gaiden Black as one of a select few all-time action greats. There's a strong case that until Devil May Cry 5 came along, Platinum was practically peerless in the contemporary action space. Now, we have Bayonetta 3.

So how do you follow u??p on prior perfection? Mo?re of it.

Review: Bayonetta 3 1

Bayonetta 3 (Switch [reviewed])
Developer: Platinum Games
Publisher: Nintendo
Released: October 28, 2022
MSRP: $59.99

Bayonetta 3 starts with Bayonetta getting her ass kicked without context; which is a pretty great way to kick off an action game. We're immediately introduced to newcomer Viola, who has an appropriate punk vibe, looking to make a name for herself and earn the respect of Bayonetta while saving the ?world.

The phrase "multiverse" is literally used early on, and that's the heart of the rabbit hole that Bayonetta 3 takes us down. We'll see multiple other incarnations of existing characters, which is a slick way to marry both the old and the new into one non-repetitive or cloying package. "Bayonetta nostalgia" is a thing at this point, given that it's been 13 years and multiple generations since her debut, and most of it is executed in a tasteful?? fashion. Going big in terms of scope, while also keeping things personal, is a smart way to handle a gam?e like this. The new stuff, thankfully, has the same amount of care put into it, so it doesn't just feel like a retread.

Viola thankfully doesn't fall into the trap of becoming an obnoxious "attitude-era" character. She's relatable, she likes anime, and a lot of her physical comedy is to the tune of Trigun's Vash the Stampede. She sports separate mechanics that involve parrying at the perfect time instead of dodging (like Bayonetta), on top of her playful cat demon Cheshire (who can be summoned in combat??) which immediately gives her a fresh playstyle. This isn't the first game to have two distinct "young versus old" her?oes that juggle different mechanical concepts, but it's one of the better-handled ones over the years. While Viola's voice lines can get repetitive, the actress (Anna Brisbin) gives it her all, with a wide variety of emotions in play by the time the curtain closes.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RlGQM6PvHY

As far as Bayonetta's performance goes, I'd be remiss not to mention the controversy with the original actor, as well as the complicated follow-up report. I'll leave you to make your own decisions about how to handle this, but suffice to say that Jennifer Hale is once again a true professional in the booth, and does a fantastic job at voicing Bayonetta. Not only does she need to juggle the Bayonetta we're actually playing and hearing on a ?constant basis, but Hale also voices many other characters, including the other?? multiversal incarnations of the titular witch. She has a ton of dialogue, but manages to give each version their own spin (even when it comes to their nuances or attitude).

Of course, the sleaze and impeccable sense of style is still present in the threequel, including a jazzy poppy soundtrack that I would listen to in my free time; and some crazy cutscenes that include a few of the most insane scenes I've seen all year in almost any medium. There's a lot of tension to the story (as well as last-minute eucatastrophic saves that will make you smile), and Bayonetta gains access to an array of powers that allow for tons of different playstyles. Most of these are incorpora??ted? directly into the game's cutscenes, albeit to an extreme degree.

"Kick, punch, shoot, dodge (with the time-slowing witch time mechanic)" is still the core of the gameplay but the combo system is even more detailed this time around with the addition ?of demon summoning. There's a quick-swap system (toggled by L) for two weapons, which are tied to traversal, to give them even more personality. Now instead of whipping people with a yo-yo with a spider-inspired loadout, you can dash to act?ually turn into a spider, skitter around on walls, and flip around via webbing. Summoning a frog to dance and cause an acid rainfall and directing the course of a train with tank turrets on the side of it is just as fun to control.

Review: Bayonetta 3 4

The d-pad is further tied to a trio of summons, which are ruled over by a magic meter/MP system. Demon summons generally put Bayonetta in place while they're out, and have their own nuances, abilities, and combos. You can even work them into combos, and a few of the demons that I can't spoil here allow for some insane possibilities. At first I found myself wanting more out of the demon summoning system, but once you start unlocking more and fleshing out their own skill trees (you can boos?t each weapon and summon separately), it all came together, and ??the power fantasy came across nicely.

It's all so seamless. You can dodge, enter witch time, summon demons for a punish, swap mid-summon for an area-of-effect attack, then quickly cancel out of everything back into another dodge. It's just as fun to punch someone across the room and slowly riddle them with bullets as it was in the original Devil May Cry. There are some extremely badass and tense boss fights to tackle, including a few of my favorites?? in recent memory.

Funnily enough, more so than perhaps any character action game before it, I found myself experimenting with everything. Typically there's at least one weapon I leave behind, but I made a concerted effort to unlock the potential of all of the tools Bayonetta 3 provided, and reaped the benefits. I started finding what I meshed with, raising my end-of-leve??l rankings as time went on.

Review: Bayonetta 3 3

My one errant foundational complaint about Bayonetta 3 is that I wish some of the zones were a bit more expansive. Platinum is gifted at crafting dynamic areas that are fun to fight in, but some locales are cordoned off by an impassable? mist too much for my liking. We're given access to unprecedented access to unique traversal powers in this entry, and I wish there was more of a chance to use them. It's not all bad though.

As far as side content goes, there's a lot of it! Each stage has multiple optional arenas and secrets (which usually include some sort of comb?at challenge or twist, or gathering cubes on the map in a quick fashion), on top of multiple achievements to clear that are level-specific. There's also a postgame o?f sorts that I can't discuss here (but will once the game is out). It took me roughly 10 hours to finish, at an exploratory pace. A direct shot will no doubt make for a shorter run.

For everyone else, there's a casual difficulty (plus, clicking the left stick will tell you where to go) as well as a "naive angel mode," which alters the game's charac??ter models. You can also continue from completed chapters (with checkpoints), peruse the art and music gallery, unlock items for Viola's room, boost your skills, acquire new equipment/items, and go for cosmetic unlocks (which can be used to customize the look of the "main" Bayonetta of the game, as well as take on the visage of the multiverse versions). It's refreshing, i??n 2022, to boot up a game and just hit "play," with nothing else to juggle.

In an early tone-setter for the game, you'll water ski as a giant demon dragon, and it only gets wackier from there. When playing Bayonetta 3, much to my delight, I had no clue what was going to happen next at all times. I was absorbed, and between the cr??azy story, the environments, and the action system that's been refined through two prior games (and years of experience), I had very little downtime. It's pretty much everything an action fan could want.

Hair today, gone tomorrow

Ramping up those hyper engines beyond capacity, Nintendo has released a four-minute trailer for its long-awaited sequel Bayonetta 3, ahead of the game's October 28 launch on Nintendo Switch. The new preview features the Umbra Witch in typically fine fashion, battlin??g alongside new and familiar allies.

Titled "Bayonettas Everywhere?!" the trailer mixes fast 'n' frantic gameplay with snippets of the game's cinematics perhaps showing a little more than is necessary, frankly. Our favorite hair-whipper is showcased battling an array of demons, monsters, and ghoulies, while tighter attention is paid to her new punk-rock protege, Viola.?? This young and spirited witch-in-training will accompany Bayonetta in her battle against a fearsome new enemy: the time-warping Homunculi.

You can check out the trailer below. Personally, I think it shows off a little too much story.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh6bwdYgbio

In addition to the story and gameplay footage. The preview offers another look at the "Demon Masquerade" an ability that will allow the unholy one to channel various otherworldly beings including demons Gomorrah, Malphas, and Ph??antasmaraneaeto to both tweak her attack option and offer up brand-new combo routes, allowing our girl to switch up her battle abilities in the thick of the action.

More curiously, the trailer ends with a delightful-looking side-mode, that sees long-time Bayo pal Jeanne infiltrating a subterranean complex in delightful 2D action. The footage is reminiscent of the classic 1994 arcade release Elevator Action Returns, and is, surprisingly, one of the trailer's coolest elements. Bayonetta 3 might have tea??sed us with the very longest of waits, but the sequel seems to be shaping up very nicely indeed. Besides, if we aren't being teased, is it even really Bayo?

"I personally do hope that they still have this portable element"

Bayonetta 3 is nearly here after a years-long wait, and amidst its release, we have some Hideki Kamiya Switch thoughts. Those are arguably the best kind of Kamiya thoughts.

Speaking to VGC (alongside of Platinum vice president and CBO Takao Yamane and CEO Atsushi Inaba), vice president Kamiya chimed in on several industry topics (as he does!) and touched on a theoretical follow-up to the Nintendo Switch: as well as how? he currently engages with his current hardware, and the hobby in general.

Here's Kamiya's full rundown on the issue:

"And that’s exactly how we approached Bayonetta 3: we had to make use of the full potential of the hardware that we have. And as I said, this mentality will be the same on every hardware platform that we’re developing games for moving forward, and not a mentality that is limited to the Nintendo Switch. Personally, this is a very lifestyle-oriented preference for myself, but right now I feel it’s really difficult for me to actually 'sit' still in front of the TV and play game?s. For me, I lie down and play games in portable mode and I enjoy games? that way, and that’s the biggest reason why I like the Nintendo Switch. Whenever the new hardware that Nintendo decides to launch next arrives, I personally do hope that they still have this portable element so that it can support my lifestyle of playing games as I lie down!"

So there's several things to unpack here. Obviously Kamiya is going to boost up the current hardware of something he's released several big games on, but the "lifestyle-oriented preference" bit is really interesting. Although portable handhelds have existed for decades, the ability to play many AAA games lying down, for him, ushered in a new way to mesh with the hobby. ??I've met myriad?? people who feel the same way, who even play their Switches in portable mode despite being right next to a dock/a TV.

He also mentions "new hardware" from Nintendo, and how a portable element is on his wishlist. I think it's safe to say that if Nintendo does do a Switch Pro to wring out every last drop of the Switch series line (or goes for a Switch 2 in the future): either way it'll likely have a portable focus. Nintendo struck gold with the ability to sell multiple pieces of hardware to families, and likely won't want to give it up? anytime soon.

Basically all they need? to do is forge a "more powerful Switch," and most of the hard work is done.

A new voice for the Umbra Witch

The next entry in the Bayonetta series arrives this month. But the voice actor of the series' protagonist won't be returning for Bayonetta 3.

In an interview with Game Informer for its cover story on Bayonetta 3, Platinum Games confirms that Hellena Taylor, the voice actress of Bayonetta in the first?? two games, is not returning? for the third.

Fans had speculated th??is may be the case, but now Platinum has made it clear. Rather than Taylor, Bayonetta will be voiced by popular voice actor Jennifer Hale.

"Various overlapping circumstances made it difficult for Hellena Taylor to reprise her role," said game director Yusuke Miyata to Game Informer. "We he??ld auditions to cast the new voice of Bayonetta and offered the role to Jennifer Hale, whom we felt was a good match for the c?haracter. I understand the concerns some fans have about the voice change at this point in the series, but Jennifer's performance was way beyond what we could have imagined. I'm confident that her portrayal of Bayonetta will exceed our fans' expectations."

Bayonet?ta's voice actor for the?? Japanese VO will still be Atsuko Tanaka.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=gOGJGv6OoXA

A new voice in the fray

Jennifer Hale is well-known for her work on several different game franchises, ranging from Rivet in Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Ashe in Overwatch to perhaps her most well-known role as Commander Shepard in the Mass Effect trilogy. There's little question that Platinu?m got someone talented to fi?ll the shoes (gun-heels?) of Bayonetta.

Whether Hale fits as well as Taylor did for Bayonetta or not is the question. GI's coverage seems po?sitive on the ?change, commending Hale's portrayal as being "sometimes indistinguishable" from Taylor's work in the first two games. But if you want to find out yourself, you'll have to wait until later this month.

Bayonetta 3 goes live for Nintendo Switch on October 28.

Ahead of the physical release of Bayonetta 1 on Switch

The two Bayonetta Switch games just got a version 1.1.0 patch (1, 2), mostly to shore things up language-wise (Korean, and traditional/simplified Chinese) ahead of the release of Bayonetta 3 in October as well as the debut of the first Bayonetta on Switch in physical form.

Due out on September 30 (mine already shipped!), a $30 p??hysical editi??on of the original game will be released, said to be "limited in number" by Nintendo directly. Interestingly enough, the Masquerade Edition of Bayonetta 3 will have three sle??eves, which will allow you to store the first entry in it.

It's a flood of Bayonetta-related news! It's weird to think that this series debuted in 2009 (!), and it's still alive and kicking today. It just speaks to the overall quality of it, as some of Platinum's best work to date: and two of the best technical action games of all time. Hopefully Bayonetta 3 will complete the trifecta.

Troubled RPG bowing out just one year from launch

Square Enix and PlatinumGames have officially announced that their ambitious RPG Babylon's Fall i??s to end service in 2023, a scant year a?fter the live service adventure's launch.

In a statement on the official website, the development team says that it?? will close servers on February 28, 2023, after which, the game will be rendered unavailable to play on all platforms and all online data and player records will be erased. Furt??her sales of the title and any of its post-release content have been officially halted as of the statement's publication.

"With the desire of delivering an exhilarating online multiplayer action RPG set in an elaborate high fantasy world, we launched the game’s official service on Thursday, 3 March 2022, and have continued to undertake additional development and operations," reads the statement. "However, it is with deep regret to inform you that we will be terminating the game’s service on Tuesday, 28 Februa??ry 2023."

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0ZktpmoGrg

"We will also cancel the large-scale updates that we had planned. In terms of the plan moving forward, Season 2 will run until Tuesday, 29 November 2022 as scheduled, and the Final Season will begin with the maintenance ?scheduled on the same day. This Fi??nal Season is the period during which you can earn the ranking rewards of Season 2."

Babylon's Fall, intended to be a long-life service title, struggled to build and maintain a community immediately upon release, with one particularly rough day showcasing less than 10 concurrent users on Steam,  less than a month after the epic title's launch. While PlatinumGames accepted these early struggles, noting that it intended to bolster the title with the aforementioned "large-scale updates," it seems that the team has seen the iceberg, and? decided to call it quits.

The statement closes out by telling players that the team hopes to implement "events and initiatives" between now and the end of service. This will likely come as a small reward to those remaining Sentinels who paid $60 for the game at launch, and will be unable to play it in any fashion whatsoever just a year later. While it's easy to be glib about these matters, it ultimately represents a waste of time, money, talent, and effort from all parties, swallowed up by the ever-hungry, bo??ttomless pit of trend-chasing.

It'll happen? aga?in. As surely as night follows day.

Kamiya reminds us that Nintendo even wanted the Link outfit to be more revealing

The new Bayonetta 3 naive mode is an optional toggle that makes the game less revealing and apparently, it was Platinum's idea. The Bayonetta 3 naive mode move was done so that everyone could en?joy the game.

Speaking on Twitter in response to a fan (and all of the speculation that Nintendo "made Platinum Games do it"), outspoken Platinum producer Hideki Kamiya notes that Nintendo has "never complained about exposure" before in the series, including this new entry. In fact, he says that in Bayonetta 2, when adding the extra Link (Zelda) costume to the game for the Nintendo edition, the company asked if it was "okay to expose Link's chest more." That last bit is actually public info revealed on a Platinum Games post in 2014.

Kamiya goes on to say that he thought Nintendo would be a more "square" company, but he's had a good relationship with them, and they're able to talk directly about issues and strategy together. It behooves Platinum to play ball with ?Nintendo, but at this point they've been in business for so long (and see the relationship as mutually beneficial), so they have a rapport.

I figured this was always the case. Nintendo allowed the first two games to hit Nintendo consoles after all, and has sanctioned games that overstep even more boundaries on the platform as well. For a long, long while now (Devil's Third helped solidify it) Nintendo has been open to more mature games, so Bayonetta 3 isn't special in this regard.

Make some space

Nintendo has updated the official page for the newly revealed sequel, and the Bayonetta 3 file size clocks in at 15GB.

It's not quite as compact as a first-party game (Nintendo continues to work its magic, as Mario Strikers Switch is a staggeringly low 3GB!); rather, it's a fairly standard "AAA" size without breaking the bank too much (like say, an open world RPG such as Witcher 3 does with roughly 31GB of space baseline).

For reference, here is how the Bayonetta 3 file size stacks up against the other games on Switch:

  • Bayonetta 1 - 8.6GB
  • Bayonetta 2 - 12.4GB
  • Bayonetta 3 - 15GB

On Switch, physical copies tend to matter more than other platforms. Not only are you cutting out the need for space (as Switch carts don't need to obnoxiously install anyway on your device), but typically, Nintendo games keep their value over time, especially if it's something that's technically first-party (developed or published) like Bayonetta 3.

Thankfully Nintendo tends to keep its file size data updated on the official listings for all its games, so people can plan ahead if needed, and people can do all the storage Tetris they can to prepare. For people with a ??lot of games, it can get overwhelming sometimes!

On top of the Trinity Masquerade Special Edition of Bayonetta 3

A Bayonetta Switch physical edition is coming "later this year," according to Nintendo, who will be providing more info a?t a later date.

The news was revealed with the Bayonetta 3 launch date trailer this week, but Nintendo has separately c?larified a bit on how that distribution of the f?irst game will go down.

Since collectors will be itching for any kernel of info, here is everything we have on the Bayonetta Switch physical edition, straight from Nintendo

  • It's priced at $30, MSRP
  • It'll be a standalone physical release on September 30, 2022
  • "A limited number of the Bayonetta physical version will be available to pre-order via select retailers and available at launch in the My Nintendo Store"
  • The Masquerade Edition of Bayonetta 3 will contain three game sleeves, one for Bayonetta 1

Hopefully the rollout will be smooth, and will provide plentiful options/stock, with safeguards in place for bots/scalpers. That will totally happen you all.

But really folks! Ideally, none of these retailer drops will be "two-minute sellouts at 2AM E??astern time," or riddled with hours-long login queues. This isn't a special edition, it's a $30 re-release.

That said, there is a special edition in the works for Bayonetta 3?: the aforeme??ntioned Masquerade Edition. You can get a look at it here:

Also signifies "violence, blood and gore, partial nudity, and strong language"

Bayonetta 3 in-game purchases are going to be a thing, according to the updated Nintendo Store listing this past week.

As spotted on Reddit by user XDitto, the page was quietly updated recently, showcasing a full M rating. Now this was expected! Previously it was "pending," and I don't think anyone at Platinum would have settled for less than an "M for mature" for Bayonetta 3, and Nintendo has published the two prior games with the same rating. When it comes to the reasons why: "violence, blood and gore, partial nudity, and strong language" are obvious "just Bayonetta things."

Interestingly, folks caught another addendum to the rating: in-game purchases. If you recall, this was a bone the ESRB threw people roughly four years ago during the height of the loot box craze/controversy, though it applies in a general sense beyond that sole pa??rameter.

At present, I fully expect "in-game purchases" to mean some form of costume DLC, or even a potential season pass, which Nintendo has been all about in a number of their first-??party games. Platinum is generally in the habit of providing full action experiences out of the box, so there's probably no cause for alarm.

In fact, the idea of a potential Bayonetta expansion could be a great way to keep the party goi?ng without having to wait years for a new entry.

Rise of the Robots

A stone-cold classic of dystopian gaming is headed to Switch this year as revealed during this morning's Nintendo Direct, Square Enix's apocalyptic and dramatic action adventure NieR: Automata will bring its wistful storytelling and dark, indelible worlds to the Swi?tch platform this fa?ll.

NieR: Automata: The End of YorHa Edition will see the award-winning 2017 release faithfully recreated for the Swi?tch platform, bundled alongside all previously released content including DLC expansions, additional modes, and a fully-stocked wardrobe of snazzy duds for automated heroes 2B, 9S, and, A2. In addition, the Switch port will feature its own range of console exclusive skins, so you ??can ensure 2B is rocking all of her fineries as she picks her way through our miserable, dilapidated planet.

Originally developed by PlatinumGames, Nier: Automata sees an Earth lying in devastation, with mankind locked in a brutal proxy war against a seemingly insurmountable army of alien-created machines. In response, humanity builds its own automated protection in the form of sentient androids, who do battle with the machines in a never-ending war of attrition for control of the planet. NieR: Automata tells the story of three such androids? and their dramatic, emotive, and often heart-breaking existence as pawns in a galactic battle for world domination.

NieR: Automata: End of YorHa Edition launches October 6 on Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders for the physical release are now live at the official Square Enix store and include a pretty rad-looking shirt.

It fell

Platinum Games is seemingly at a crossroads. As a follow-up to Clover, one of the finest development studios of all time, its reputation was legendary. As far as single-player action romps go, MadWorld into Bayonetta, into Vanquish, into Metal Gear Rising, Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2? What a run! Then Legend of Korra came and pumped the breaks a bit on expectations. Since that turning point, Platinum has been spreading its time across multiple studios, including collaborating with Square Enix for Babylon's Fall.

It's a weird one.

Review: Babylon's Fall 3

Babylon's Fall (PC, PS4, PS5)
Developer: Platinum Games
Publisher: Square Enix
Released: March 3, 2022
MSRP: $59.99

When I talked about Babylon's Fall in my preview four months ago, I noted the promise of the core action system. But at that point a lot of the freemium elements weren't in full swing, and the assumption was that the tower would e??volve and shift into something radically different th?e more you progress. That didn't really pan out.

From minute one, asking me to mandatorily link my Square Enix account wasn't a great si??gn. It even warns you multiple times that "you cannot relink this," so my first emotional experience with the game was anxiety as I double and triple-checked menu text. 2022 in a nutshell. My first-impression blues didn’t get any better once I was asked to navigate a weird browser UI for seasonal news dealing with the game. You also can’t delete your characters ??for some reason, a notification that I got right after logging in. This game is a house of cards!

After actually getting in and creating my character, I got to experience a brief moment of joy, as I took in the incredibly weird story setup, which feels authentically Platinum. Your job is to climb and explore the mysterious tower of Babylon, amid some really bizarre (and enjoyable) English voice acting choices (Japanese audio is in too if you can't deal). The big narrative gimmick involves the "Gideon Coffin," which is attached to the backs of candidates in a creepy ritual of sorts that kills most of the participants but you're special, and the story? beats are somewhat driven ??by that.

I actually really enjoyed ?many aspects of the story, and again, like a broken record, I have to stress that I wish it was either a fully single-player game, or eliminated the live service elements altogether. Some of the little moments between missions where characters are just chatting at a tavern show the potential of this world, and the story portions can be exciting. The ability to equip vanity attir??e (transmog) shows that they cared about the design of how characters look and operate in a more granular way than expected. A lot of thought was put into this game.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=h0ZktpmoGrg

Visually, Babylon's Fall has gotten a little better since the shaky reveal, but it's still rough, especially when it comes to character models ?(and the number of repeat enemies). There are elements like the sound design that are trying to feel stylish, but stumble due to what could be time constraints. It's a really weird game that I'd love to have more insight on when it comes to the developmental process.

When you're actually fighting stuff, it's a ton of fun. Gameplay is the saving grace that made this assignment worth doing, which is no surprise from Platinum. At ?its foundation it involves a light and heavy attack system, but with a twist. You can actually assign weaponry to either of the two, which fundamentally cha??nges your build and playstyle.

When you add on the two "coffin combos" (which are the bread and butter of gameplay), it gets even cooler. Those are linked to L2 and R2, and can have two more weapons linked to them. Coffin abilit?ies op?erate independently from everything else, so you can queue up a hammer smash even if you're on the ground or mid-combo with something else. It's really refreshing, lightning-fast at times, and responsive. Dodges are slick too, as you get a quick non-annoying blur effect when you hit at the critical time. Mixing and matching ranged and melee attacks showcases the potential of the system in a way that a lot of people are unfortunately never going to see.

But I hit a fun wall when I was constantly doing the same exact things over and over. You know how in Monster Hunter when you load into a sandbox, it errs on the side of feeling open? Well Babylon's Fall offers linear dungeons instead of sandboxes, and many of them look the same. The most constraining thing of all is variety: something I already hinted at with the lack of enemies to f??ight. You see that room in the above screenshot? I'??ve been there like over 100 times, no matter how many different ways it's dressed up.

Review: Babylon's Fall 2

Whether I queued up for solo story quests, party quests, or quick match runs, everything felt homogenized, and small iterations like lava floors don't fundamentally change that. Bosses do, but they're few and far between, as most of the challenges are the same hallways, remixed, and the same enemies, slightly tweaked. When combat is clicking in the moment against an enemy that actually matters, with a build that you've come up with that sings, it's easy to forget about some of Babylon's Fall's issues. But you'r?e just not doing that often, as a lot of the game is c??onfusingly spent in hallways and menus.

The menus are, surprisingly, a big point of contention. It's laborious to navigate even the most basic things and the UI is sluggish; even during the premium shop portions, which is probably a no-no for any publisher. So this all sounds like a free-to-play game right? Wrong. Babylon's Fall is $60, with a $99.99 digital deluxe edition. Looking at the in-game item vendor and having to sift through multiple premium pages was strange. Because it's a live service game with seasons, it's really hard to stay invested in what's at the top of the tower, and seeing the daily login ??bonuses pop up on top of everything else was a bummer. Even providing the first ba?ttle pass for free feels like a trap, and just leads to more menus.

Live service games often put the cart before the horse, and their lifespans are really dependent on how many people are playing and pumping money in (because of the way it necessitates constant updates with its vicious cycle). Even if there are people like me who will ingratiate themselves to the action system, Babylon's Fall is almost impossible to recommend, because you could be buying into an experience that has its plug pulled before the end of the year. Remember Let it Die? That started off with a similarly polarizing reception (and the sa??me "tower climbing" concept!), but grew into something more; albeit keeping? its free-to-play machinations. Maybe something like that can happen here, but you can wait on that.

Every time I hit a frustrating or repetitive portion of Babylon's Fall I found myself wishing it was just a fully single-player game that was somehow worked into the NieR/Drakengard universe. To see a Platinum joint end up like this is disheartening. Again, the foundation is there, and I have no doubt that this would have been a stronger game that would have spread via word of mouth to action enthusiasts far and wide if it didn't have the freemium elements. Whatever happened behind the scenes, I hope it wasn't their call, and I hope this isn't the type of product they're going?? to focus on in?? the future.

Out of the ashes of my youth

We're now in the era where April Fools jokes can become real. And I'm into it. Especially when it's a game from Platinum, most definitely when it's Sol Cresta.

Review: Sol Cresta 2

Sol Cresta (PC [reviewed], PS4, Switch)
Developer: Platinum Games
Publisher: Platinum Games / Hamster
Released: February 22, 2022
MSRP: $39.99 (base game) / $9.99 (dramatic DLC)

In case you missed this niche celebration: Platinum Games, with Hamster, brought back the old school Cresta shoot 'em up (shmup) series on modern platforms with a new true sequel. You're looking at arcade?? mode (and dramatic mode via DLC, which I'll get to later), with seven stages by default. T?hose stages are broken up by multiple subsections, which last up to five minutes each. Many of these portions do involve giant enemies, but a "rival" Proto Man-esque figure (with docking abilities) pops up from time to time to ground the big boss encounters. It gets even more creative from there as you move from stage to stage.

I played it on PC, which is my favorite home for shmups because of TATE-enabled monitors: which Sol Cresta supports. Advanced options are semi-slim, but sufficient for most shmup enthusiasts. There's a toggle for scan lines, rotation (right ?or left 90 degrees) for TATE mode, windowed/full-screen, extra life/extend score (how many points you need to get an extra life) toggles, full controller remapping, and controller support.

Passive polish is really the key ingredient to Sol Cresta. While it's not doing a whole lot that you haven't seen before, Platinum Games managed to craft Sol Cresta in such a way that it looks and sounds like an above-average genre effort. While regular and charged shots are the core of what you're going to be doing with your ship, the "splitting and docking" mechanic (taken from the franchise's humble beginnings in 1980) is Sol Cresta's bread and butter.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=oaTsfzC5jo0

You can press a button to separate from your ship, and redock in different configurations. The gimmick is that different formations can trigger different playstyles and ultimate attacks, allowing some form of expe?rimentation. In short, it's your "bomb," with a little more work. It takes some getting used to, especially with the various gauges and displays, but most people will pick it up after a level or two.

Platinum also adds a little extra flair on top with commands (think like a fighting game), where you can fire backward, to the side, or burst in a 360-degree fashion. It's just enough to warrant a little extra nuance when playing without being too overwhelming, or stuffing so much in that everything suffers because something is under-designed. Having to pick up formation-enabling chips (which can be shot to change the type) and fly through color-coded hoops/shoot color-coded boxes that provide bonuses if a certain ship is the lead adds ano?ther level of chaos into the mix and rewards precision. It's the s??ort of thing score-attack fiends will want to keep an eye on in repeat playthroughs.

Sol Cresta just has a fantastic flow to it, especially on higher difficulties; there are five in total in arcade mode. It's a blast to flip into a formation to answer something you need to do at that given moment, then slip back into your standard ship instantly say, to dodge something on a dime. Acquiring the command abilities and bonuses gradually in a stage as you score points is slick, as it lets you build up and unload as the stage crescendos. The docking goes both ways, as it'??s thrilling once you're stripped down to just one small ship with a d?esperation dodge; trying to build back up again. The visual style is very clear so you know what's going on at all times, as is the sound feedback and stellar soundtrack.

Review: Sol Cresta 3

If you're so inclined you can spring for the $10 "Dramatic DLC," which we were provided in addition to the base game, and spans two difficulty modes (easy/normal). "Dramatic" is basically short for "drama," as there's an actual story here, told via text [with character portraits] on the sides of the screen, and Japanese voiced audio (a la Star Fox). It boasts the "true identity" of an enemy in the story and several plot revelations, as well as a "true ending." What is this, a Capcom game from the 2010s?! In all seriousness, a $10 ??true ending ??DLC isn't a good look on paper. But I did have a lot of fun with it, and the base game feels complete on its own. You can decide if the juice is worth the squeeze especially given the high price of the base game, which towers above most modern shmups.

Either way, Sol Cresta isn't just a revival of a classic franchise, it's a fully-fledged shmup that stands on its own two feet. It's a bit of an?? ask price-wise, but the polish speaks for itself.

[This review is based on a retail build of the game provided by the publisher. The dramatic DLC was provided as well.]

'If you haven’t played the first and second games, I think you’ll be missing out'

While it seems fairly obvious that the third game in the series will be a continuation of the first two, Platinum says you should really play Bayonetta 1+2 before Bayonetta 3. Well specifically Platinum's Hideki Kamiya: the producer that's been the most vocal purveyor of Bayonetta 3 since it was announced.

Speaking to IGN Japan (as translated by VGC), Kamiya tells fans that he'd "like" people to play the first two games in the series, and that you would be "missing out" on elements of Bayonetta 3's story if you didn't.

So there is a caveat: you won't be completely lost.  Kamiya elaborates: "We wrote the storylines for the first and second games in a way that you could enjoy them regardless of which one you started with, and there’s no reason why you won’t be able to follow the story and enjoy it if you start with Bayonetta 3."

Again, all of this seems obvious, but it's nice to hear that the game is framed as a standalone in some ways, as a lot of folks are going to be coming straight into this game around launch. Telling people they might get more out of it is also a great marketing move to sell two classic action games: which action fans really should give a shot at some point.

It doesn't look like a sure bet, but we're still keeping tabs on this new Platinum game

Announced at the 2021 Game Awards, Babylon's Fall has a March 3, 2022 release da?te. And before you let out a sigh of relief t?hat Platinum Games' new action-RPG is narrowly dodging the jam-packed February launch schedule, it isn't not exactly. While the full release is in March, digital deluxe owners can start on February 28 with early access.

It's the way of the world, apparently!

This game has been cooking with closed-off beta tests, and we heard Chris Carter's hands-on impressions as recently as three weeks ago. It's a little complicated. The Gideon Coffin multi-weapon combat system has potential for fun comboing, but a lack of enemy and dungeon variety so far brings the experience down. Visually, the developers have re-tuned the "medieval oil painting aesthetic" following fan feedback, but it's still divisiv?e.

So while the vibe is intriguing as an action-RPG nut, Babylon's Fall isn't coming together how I would've hoped. Platinum has that upper-tier action pedigree, but not everything the studio puts out is on equal footing, and Square Enix has had its own mis??steps as a publisher. It's going to take some strong word-of-mouth at this point, basically.

The idea of potentially trying to wrangle three other loot-hungry players for the full online dungeon-crawling experience, instead of just playing Babylon's Fall solo, is also weighing on me. (That concern isn't unique to this game, but it's one I think about whenever something like this is ??or isn't a part of Game Pass. That can?? change a lot.)

But I don't want to get too far ahead of myself Babylon's Fall has a release date now, and t??hat's a start. Some people were wondering if it would even get th?is far.

The live servicey looter conceit could wear thin

As I played through the recent wave of the closed beta to gather my current Babylon’s Fall impressions, I was torn. On one hand, Platinum clearly knows what they're doing, and you can see it as plain as day when you're actually in the heat of combat. But I can't help but question the decision to make this a m?ultiplayer dungeon crawler first; everything else second.

Babylon’s Fall impressions 2

Like many of you out there, you may have seen the trailer and c?ame away? underwhelmed, but the powers that be have been working to improve the look and feel of Babylon's Fall since then. Here are some big t?hings that Square ?Enix and Platinum improved upon in this newest release this week:

  • They changed the visual style to look more detailed, but kept the spirit of the painting motif.
  • Combat has been tweaked to be more responsive.
  • Dungeons now scale to player count (it should have always been like this).
  • Getting in parties is now easier with a menu prompt.

Some of that should have been there s?ince the start to put its best foot forward, but it is the beta period after all! I'm glad they'r?e sorting this out now.

If you haven't been following along, think of Babylon's Fall like a mix between Monster Hunter and other recent live service loot-focused games like Destiny. The hub world is clearly modeled after the former (it even has boards that you take quests from), while the loot system is very much Destiny-esque, with "boxes" to open after dungeon runs, with varying degrees of loot rarity (and varying degrees of usefulness), and a "power level" throughput to command progression. The idea of "climbing the tower" provides some le??vel of promise that yes, this will eventually end (and after that, post-launch content is planned).

So, a lot of my problem with the dungeon crawling format is how rote a lot of the progression sense is, because it's clearly framed with the "do the same stuff over and over" mindset. The actual dungeon layouts in Babylon's Fall can feel lifeless and empty, with terrain constantly blocking your view of the backdrops: the most beautiful part of the game. There's really not much room for explo?ration either, as most paths lead to complete dead ends with nothing fun at the end. Player expression is?? paramount with loot aesthetics and combat (more on that in a moment), but the means in which to facilitate that can feel barren.

If this was something more in Platinum's classic wheelhouse, there would be jumping puzzles, labyrinths to explore, optional paths, rewarding secrets, and so on. But Babylon's Fall doesn't really have any of that. You pursue the linear path of each dungeon, occasionally jump over a few "traps" (which are more like the same set of spikes, re-used in the same few ways), then fight a boss.?? In one subsequent run I was basically going through the same dungeon again, but backwards. The repeatable dungeon format tries to squeeze blood from a stone.

It's a shame, because I actually like the way it plays, and the combat system has a lot of potential. You can actually equip individual weapons to light, heavy, and two special slots (with abilities that essentially draw upon an MP bar), allowing you to swap between them at will, even mid-combo. It's a lot like Devil May Cry 3's dynamic syst??em, but in some cases, even more ope?n. My favorite combo was a light and heavy archery loadout that had melee linked to special slots.

Each light and heavy slot had a different bow in it, and my specials allowed for close-combat spells to wreck if I wasn't drawing aggro at the moment. Since specials operate independently of your heavy and light attacks, you can do some really cool things with your loadouts as you charge specials and unleash them at your own pace. I was basically creating my own combos, ??using two specials separately, while peppering enemies with light and heavy attacks. It's even cooler in practice with a party, as there's lots of opportunities to stunlock enemies and focus fire to the point where you're creating special team attacks. With cross-play between PC, PS4, and PS5, there's a good chance the playerbase will be healthy at launch.

There's a limit though. Similar to how bland the dungeons c??an feel, enemy variety can also take a hit. There aren't a lot of enemy types at the moment, and some of them can really blend together (hopefully this is just a beta thing, or will open up a??s the game progresses). One "big boss" fight I encountered so far mainly just vomited out minions that ruin the uniqueness of the battle. They can often feel like a blank canvas on which to paint your combat plan. If that changes, it'll up my interest considerably, despite my other issues.

All that said about the loot, I could see the progression coming to fruition as I leveled up. Each piece of armor made my character look distinctively cooler, and at the moment, my avatar is a hooded cyborg of sorts with a sword/bow combo. As far as loot-based games go, it does have more personality on paper. But all of that could be accomplished with something simpler; something more like the traditional NieR: Automata approach, with multiplayer a??s an option, not the focus or crutch.

I really love the core of Babylon's Fall and the potential of the combat system, just not necessarily with this format. I think a lot of people are going to miss out on Babylon's Fall because of the w??ay it's presented, and that's fine. Not everyone has time for a live service "endless" loot-based game, and it's a p??retty crowded market out there. If it doesn't succeed, I hope it gets reworked into something everyone can enjoy.

We're coming home in 2022

Today's Nintendo Direct ended with the game we've been waiting to see for too long. In Yoshiaki Koizumi's own words, "We announced this game in 2017, and we thank you for your patience. This game will launch next year." Why yes, it's none other than Bayonetta 3!

"After what seems like 500 years, we're proud to finally show the trailer," said Platinum.

The main upgrade for Bayonetta 3 or at least the ?first big one we've been privy to after finally getting a three-and-a-half-minute glimpse of this long-awaited Switch game is the Demo??n Masquerade ability, which lets Bayonetta take control of beefy demons.

More than anything, I'm most stoked about the continuation of this wild, witchy world. We love this studio for its top-tier action gameplay, and I'd put Bayonetta in that bucket. I also ??really like the story, which seems like it's ~going places~. I need to cons??ult the lore.

I have no real doubt that Bayonetta 3 will be anoth??er sweet game for action fans, and I trust in Platinum, but at the same time, this showing didn't do?? much for me.

The big demon clashes are an interesting focal point, and I get why Nintendo would want to point at them for this showcase, they just don't seem all that fun so far, anyway. Granted, we're missing the wider context, and we don't know how prevalent this stuff will be in comparison to everything else the game is cooking up, so I'm trying not to judge too harshly here. As a show closer, even just as a "Bayonetta 3 trailer," I'm underwhelmed.

It's nice to have this reveal out of the way so we can all finally chill for a bit and I look forward to seeing more footage in the lea??d-up to the 2022 launch.

What do you think the shadowy tease at the end is getting at? And how do you feel about Bayonetta's new look? Bayonetta 2 is a tough act to follow, and I'm rooting for Bayo 3.

"We're in the home stretch of development right now, working on making the core of the game even more fun and test playing nonstop," said director Yusuke Miyata. "As the culmination of this series loved by all of you, we're giving our all to make it a masterpiece worthy of the name Bayonetta so please wait and anticipate jus?t a bit longer!"

Star Fox Zero Switch? Sure

Star Fox Zero hasn't had the best reception for a first-party Nintendo game. But Star Fox Zero Switch? With some tweaks?? in tow? Maybe that version could salvage its reputation.

Speaking to VGC, Zero developer Platinum Games is totally cool with making it happen on Switch. In fact, they are "definitely" interested, and seemed to have a smooth ti??me developing it. Platinum boss Atsushi Inaba explains:

"It’s unfortunate that people aren’t able to play older games because they’re locked out of the platform, so of course if possible we’d like to bring over any of those older titles to the newer platforms. It kind of depends on what’s in the realm of actual possibility, but yes, if the chance came up [Star Fox Zero Switch] it’s definitely something we’d like to think about. The important thing to remember there is that because it’s Nintendo’s IP, the ideas are coming from Miyamoto-san himself./p>

Interestingly, Inaba notes that for the director of the game (Yusuke Hashimoto), going to Miyamoto to provide feedback or i??deas was somewhat intimidating, given Miyamoto's legendary status in the industry.

One of the best ways to do this whole affair, if we did get Star Fox Zero Switch, is to provide a peace offering of sorts: a cheaper price point, reworked controls, and the bonus of bundling in Star Fox Guard as well. Star Fox Zero didn't really get a fair shake, but I totally understand why people would take umbrage with the controls. If those were ?tweaked, there's a lot to enjoy underneath.
