Pokémon Home regularly allows trainers to get their hands on rare Shiny Pokémon. The app's latest update has given users a brief window to add a Shiny Keldeo a??nd a Shiny Meltan, two hard-to-get Pokémon, to their collecti??on. However, it isn't handing them out for free.

If you want to get these two Shinies, you'd best be ready to hop back into some old Pokémon games to complete a few of Pokémon Home's Pokédexes. It won't be easy, but catching Shinies never is. Here's how to get Pokémon Home's Shiny Keldeo and Shiny Meltan.

How to get Pokémon Home's Shiny Keldeo

Keldeo, the Colt Pokémon, is the adoptive ward of the Swords of Justice, a trio of Legendary Pokémon introduced in Pokémon: Black and White. As a Mythical Pokémon, Keldeo is usually only catchable during limited-time giveaway events (although there is an obscure way to catch it Pokémon: Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra DLC). This is the first time its Shiny variant has been available, making it an irresistib?le prize for Shiny hunters.

Here's how to get the Shiny Keldeo from Pokémon Home.

• Download the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon Home.
• Complete the Galar, Isle of Armor, and Crown Tundra Pokédexes for Pokémon: Sword and Shield and its Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLCs
• Transfer the required Pokémon from Pokémon: Sword and Shield into Pokémon Home through your Switch to register them on the app's Galar, Isle of Armor, and Crown Tundra Pokédexes.
• Download the Pokémon Home app on iOS or Android and link your mobile Home account to your Switch Home account.
• Use the Mystery Gifts feature in your Pokémon Home mobile app to receive your free Pokémon.

How to get Pokémon Home's Shiny Meltan

Meltan, the Lugnut Pokémon, is one of my all-time favorite Pocket Monsters. How can you not love this little guy? Look at his little wheel nut head! Unfortunately, you can only catch Meltan in Pokémon Go, the only game where it can evolve into its second form, the roided???? out Melmetal.

Here's how to get the Shiny Meltan from Pokémon Home.

• Download the Nintendo Switch version of Pokémon Home.
• Complete the Kanto Pokédexes for Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu or Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu.
• Transfer the required Pokémon from Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu or Pokémon: Let's Go Pikachu into Pokémon Home through your Switch to register them on the app's Kanto Pokédex.
• Download the Pokémon Home app on iOS or Android and link your mobile Home account to your Switch Home account.
• Use the Mystery Gifts feature in your Pokémon Home mobile app to receive your free Pokémon.

Before making room in your menagerie for Shiny Keldo and Shiny Meltan, don't start thinking you can trick the system. Pokémon Home can tell which game you got the Pokémon you're trans??ferring in from, and it won't count any Pokémon that weren't caught in the games I listed above. There are no shortcuts here; if you want these Pocket Monsters, y?ou've got to put in the work and fill in those Pokédexes the old-fashioned way.

The few but the mighty.

I like to think that if I lived in the Pokémon universe, I would be a cowgirl. I was obsessed with horses as a kid. We lived next door to a couple of them, and I think it's easy to forget just how big these animals really are. Being a tad vertically challenged myself, my face is about level with th?e average horse's neck. They literally ripple with muscle, run faster than we ever could, and could end your life with a single kick. Now imagine if they were al?so covered in fire. There may not be as many horse-like Pokémon as there are birds or dogs, but there's still a decent list of them.

Ponyta

Ponyta is the OG. In the early days of the anime, Ponyta was one of my favorites. I loved the sense of loyal??ty. This Pokémon won't let just anyone touch them. If Ponyta isn't feeling you, its firey mane will burn you. If it likes you, the fire doesn't burn! That's the same level of satisfaction you feel when your friend's cat who "hates everyone" loves you. You just feel like the chosen one.

Rapidash

Rapidash is Ponyta's evolved form. More fire, more independence, and somehow even more beautiful, Rapidash can run at 150 mph! The fiery mane extends all the way down its ba??ck, connecting to a fluffy fire tale. The fierce Pokémon also has a horn like a unicorn, making it look even more majestic. A herd of Ponyta with Rapidash as the leader would be an amazing sight to see.

Galarian Ponyta and Galarian Rapidash

At first, I wasn't sure if these two would really count on this list because they are variations of Ponyta and Rapidash. But I read that speciation has occurred, effectively making Galarian Ponyta and its evolved form, Galarian Rapidash, a new species! Over generations, they have acclimated to the life energy of the Galar Forest. Now they both have cotton-candy colored manes and tails and new abilities that distinguish them from the above-mentioned ancestors. Galarian Ponyta's "Pastel Veil," for example, will cure its allies and itself from poisoning! Pokémon Sword & Shield's website has a lovely spread on Galarian Ponyta i?f you would like to read more.

Blitzle

Blitzle is an adorable two-foot-tall zebra with some shocking abilities. Sorry. This little Pokémon can catch lightning in its jagged mane and then discharge it. With abilities like Lightning Rod and Motor Drive, which boosts Blitzle's speed when shocked, Electric-type attacks will only make it stronger. Plus, it's t??he size of a small dog. That has to be worth something.

Zebstrika

Blitzle evolves into Zebstrika and gains an attitude. A feisty Pokémon who tends to shoot lightning from its mane when it's upset, Zebstrika is like Blitzle but am??ped up. Its mane has two lightning bolts and flows all the way down its back. Light??ning Rod and Motor Drive are also the main abilities of this dangerous zebra, but now when it runs, it sounds like thunder! A herd of Zebstrika might be a bit too much, but it would be quite the show.

Keldeo

Kaldeo is the funkiest looking Pokémon on this list. It may be only four feet tall, but this Water/Fighting-type Pokémon is full of spirit! Independent Kaldeo doesn't evolve, and legend has it that it can run across bodies of water. Its big personality shines through and becomes powerful when the Pokémon seeks justice. Especially after being hit by a Dark-type, K??aldeo stands its ground and gains double the attack stats. If there's a lake for this sweet justice seeker to enjoy, then Kaldeo would be so much fun to have as part of the herd.

Mudbray

Mudbray is closer to a donkey than a horse, as evidenced by its giant ears and name. It also looks a little clueless, but in a cute way. Like donkeys in our world, Mudbray makes a terrific pack animal. Unlike donkeys in our?? world, it can carry 50 times its body weight and uses dried mud around its hooves to grip any terrain. What I love about Mudbray is that despite the vacant expression, one of its main features is "Own Tempo," which prevents it from being confused by an enemy. March to your own drum, little donkey!

Mudsdale

Mudbray evolves into a proper horse though when it becomes Mudsdale. Reminiscent of a Clydesdale, Mudsdale also packs on mud around its hooves. The mu??d becomes harder than stone, so a swift kick can do some serious damage. According to the Pokédex, one kick can scrap a truck! Mudsdale also enjoys pulling heavy things and can carry 10 tons for enormous distances without issue. I would not want to make it angry.

Glastrier

Despite the name, Glastrier is decked out in ice, not glass. This Ice-type horse is all white except for the blocks of pure ice on its hooves and head. The ice helmet is a hundred times harder than a diamond, which is bad news ??for anyone who gets on this belligerent Pokémon's bad side. Glastrier looks like it's ready to go to war, and apparently, it has a tendency to take whatever it wants.

Spectrier

Spectrier is my favorite. This gorgeous Ghost-type Pokémon's kick will knock your soul from your body. At night, it gallops through the darkness while absorbi??ng the life force of everything sleeping nearby. What a legend. It's tempting to want a whole herd of these ethereal creatures, but the beauty of Spectrier is in its solitude. This sightless loner is meant to be ad??mired from afar when you catch a rare glimpse of its flowing purple mane and ghostly hooves.

I guess that's the running theme of these horse-like Pokémon though. They are wild, independent, and powerful, which makes them beautiful. There are plenty of other cute Pokémon to catch and entertain, but the horse-like Pok?émon remain some of my favorites.

Genesect, Marshadow, and Volcanion

A Pokemon distribution is underway in Europe! If you're still playing Pokemon Sword and Shield (or have access to it), you can partake.

The Europe Pokemon distribution event: Genesect, Marshadow, and Volcanion at GAME (UK), Gamemania (Belgium/Netherlands)

Genesect, Marshadow, and Volcanion are all part of the same event, which is going on at the moment in several regions of Europe (listed above) until September 30. According to Pokekalos, it will be an in-store deal, and you'll get a receipt with the code for the trio. Again, this distribution is restricted to Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Once you have your code, you have until December 31 to actually put it in using the mystery gi??ft system. There's another event possibly on the horizon, too!

Another event is on the books: a shiny Eternatus at GameStop

Details on the shiny Eternatus event are slim, but Pokebeach is reporting that GameStop stores are prepping for a GameStop distribution event (to be announced soon). While GameStop just secu??res a US drop right now, it could come to other regions.

Yet another event is live now

Also remember there's a code live now for Ash's ?Genga??r! Oh, and there's going to be a Scarlet and Violet bonus distribution when it launches. Nintendo and Ga??me Freak a??re getting everything out of the way before a new era begins, that's for sure.

September 3 through September 11

A Clefairy distribution is on the way, and thankfully this time I don't have to add the caveat of "but it's just Sword and Shield." I do, however, hav?e to note this is Japan-only!

The reasoning? Well, yo?u need to actually go to a Pokemon Center in Japan to snag a serial code. The distribution event is "nationwide," and will run from September 3 through September 11, close of business Sunday. To get the bonus you'll need to "do something" with the Pokemon Center staff, which will probably amount to a passcode of sorts, announced publicly. You can find detai?ls of ??prior events like that here.

Curiously, Clefairy appears in tons of games, so The Pokemon Company took the opportunity to spread the event to multiple titles. There will be three serial codes listed on the event card, which grants you Clefairy bonuses for Brilliant Diamond/Sword generations/remakes, as well as a separate third code for Legends. According to the event page, the Clefairy for BDSP/Sword/Shield will be the same, while Legends will sport a different moveset.

You'll be able to access the Pokemon Clefairy distribution event with:

• Pokemon Brilliant Diamond
• Pokemon Shining Pearl
• Pokemon Sword
• Pokemon Shield
• Pokemon Legends

If you're in Japan currently and want to check it out, you can find all of the info here. Once you do get it, the serial code will expire on September 30, 2022 at 23:59 JST, so make sure you actually use it! Also I can't imagine this coming up, but it's a thing: "If you enter the serial code incorrect??ly 10 times, you will be temporarily unable to enter it. Please try again after 6 hours have passed."

The Dracovish distribution mystery gift code is "GANJ0UAG0882"

A Dracovish distribution is currently underway for Pokemon Sword and Shield, as the game clings to life before Scarlet and Violet come and take all the special event fun away.

The code comes compliments of the Pokemon TV show promo in Japan, where the code was announced during a broadcast. It's the first code that highlights Ash's team, and more codes will come later for Dragonite (August 26), Gengar (September 2), Sirfetch'd (September 9), and Lucario (September 16). It's a neat little promo that also hits a little close to the anime, which is cool. The code is "GANJ0UAG0882," and you'll enter it via the mystery gift system.

With that in mind, I hope Nintendo and Game Freak step things up with Scarlet and Violet. These sorts of themed distribution events are real??ly easy to do and should happen way more often. Ideally, none of them will require anyone to step foot in a GameStop! Currently, we're 1/1 on that, with the aforementioned Pikachu event serving as a basic incentive to just pick the game up before the end of Februar?y.

With a lot of the innovations from Pokemon Legends already in everyone's collective mindset, Scarlet and Violet have a lot to prove; especially when it comes to open-world explo??rat??ion.

It's good through today

There's another Pokemon Sword and Shield gift afoot, and this one is celebrating the North American International Championships and participant Eric Rios.

Specifically, it gifts players a level 50 "sassy" Gastrodon, with the ability storm drain, the leftovers held item, and earth power, ice beam, yawn, and protect moves. You'll be able to pick it up via the mystery gift menu with the code "ER1CSGASTR0D0N" throughout today, and note that as of this morning, it was still live. The code aired during the championship stream itself, as is customary with these types of championship-?based codes.

As a reminder, here's how to redeem Pokemon Sword and Shield mystery gifts:

• Boot up the game and head to the main menu
• Select mystery gift (the purple present icon)
• Select "get a mystery gift"
• Go to "get with code/password"
• Enter the code above

For now, the momentum of Sword and Shield gift bonuses continues, though that will slow down later this year once Scarlet and Violet hit, and eventually, end altogether. Such is the flow of time when it comes to new generations: not to mention the off-kilter distribution schedule of spinoffs and re-releases. There's generally a more interesting way that distributions could be done in Pokemon, and h??opefully future generations will take advantage of things like more exciting unique distro opp??ortunities.

June 18 through June 19

The powers that be have revealed that a shiny Clefairy Pokemon distribution event for Sword and Shield is happening soon, to celebrate the Asia Player's Cup. The news comes via Serebii.net, who discovered that the code will be shared on various Pokemon Facebook pages from June 18 through June 19.

Like most worldwide distribution events, this one will be a code that's provided by The Pokemon Company, which works for a limited time. You can get it via the last mainline entry (Sword and Shield), by going into the mystery gift section and entering it. Stay tuned for the actual co??de distribution on the week??end.

This particularly Clefairy, again, is shiny, and will come with an Eviolite held item, at level 50. Serebii.net states that the official documents notes that it'll have glaciate, rather than icy wind. Earlier this year in February, Clefairy was datamined for Pokemon Unite: which i??s still a possibility for the game. It would potentially make sense to do a shiny Clefairy Pokemon event with that in mind, though this is mainly being done to honor the 2021 Asia Player's Cup contestant.

With Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in the pipeline, it stands to reason that all these events will shift over there by the end of the year, ??as well.

You gotta start somewhere

Holi?day shopping can be pretty difficult, especially when you have really different interests and hobbies than your non-gamer friends or family. Gift-giving can, however, be a great ?opportunity to introduce your loved ones to the magic of gaming, because there's nothing better than helping someone understand your passions and then enjoying them together.

The only thing is, if you're going to get someone a game who has never tr?ied them before, you've? got to make sure it's the right one, lest you risk putting them off of games forever. To give you some handy suggestions, or at least get you thinking on the right track, here's our list as some of the best newb-friendly games to gift to your favorite non-gamers this holiday season.

1. Minecraft

When taking into account different types of potential players, Minecraft is an all-arounder when it comes to game rec?omme?ndations. It can appeal to people who just want to chill out in creative mode and build something cool, as well as those who want to challenge themselves with survival mode.

There are also a plethora of mods out there that can cater to all kinds ??of niche interests, so you can customize the game to be appealing to anyone in your life. To top it all off, it's also a great way to help someone le??arn gaming controls in a low-stakes, low-pressure environment.

2. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is a great choice for a new player because of its more casual feel. The game never rushes or forces you to do anything in particular �you can play it however you want. The mechanics are also simple and relaxing (with t??he exception of combat, but new players can work their way up to that), and do a good job of easing the player in as they learn.

There's also the benefit of it?? being a 2D game, so you don't have to worry about dealing with the whole moving-and-looking-at-the-same-time thing if that's a stumbling blo?ck. Just make sure you set them up with the practice fishing rod at the start, and your buddy should have an awesome time.

3. Pokémon

I kind of missed the Pokémon train the first time around, but after playing Sword & Shield, I have to agree with my friends that say this series is a great way to introduce someone to turn-based combat or JRPGs. Having cute little critters to collect makes for a fun, easily understandable objective, and you don't have to be amazing at the game to progress, especially with the newer entries in the series. I've heard Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu/Eevee! can be a great pl??ace to start, but you're probably fine if you try any mainline series entries that have come out in the? last decade.

4. Telltale's The Walking Dead

Telltale's The Walking Dead is a great choice because while it does introduce new characters, it's part of a franchise that non-gamers are already familiar with. It's even structured like a TV show with its episodes, which also divide what is overall a lon??ger game into manageable chunks.

The gameplay itself is mostly limite??d to dialogue choices, but also includes some classic point-and-click adventure stuff �both of these factors can make it a great jumping??-off point to try some other games that share these mechanics.

5. Portal

Portal is also a great game I recommend to newbies, seeing as it's ?the game I played to learn shooting mechanics on a controller. Because it's a puzzle game that only has stationary turrets as enemies, you can really take your time as you try to figure out how the camera works. Some of the later levels require perfectly-timed shots, but by the time you get there, you pretty much have the contro?ls down.

There's also the fact that Portal has one of the best game stories out there, so in addition to helping a new player learn the ropes, they can also see some of the superb storytelling that games are capable of. I'd just steer clear of this on??e for someone who is particularly puzzle-averse, because it can be pretty challenging to figure out some of the solutions.

6. Journey

One of the problems I've run into while trying to recommend games to someone who has never played them is how long most of them take to complete, but Journey negates this issue by having a run time of about two h?ours. What better way to convince a skeptic than ??to have them play a great game that's no longer than a movie?

Journey is also new player-friendly because of its fluid, relaxing gameplay. There are no enemies to be seen, so your friends shouldn't have any issues making it to the end. The game is known for its gorgeous visual style and music as well, so if you show someone Journey, they?? know they?'re getting some of the best that gaming has to offer.

7. Overcooked

Want to be able to play alongside that friend or family member while they learn the ropes? No problem! Overcooked is a great option �while things?? can get a bit hectic as you progress through the levels, the game is designed to be easy to pick up and understand. Considering it's one of those games wh??ere you can see yourself mastering it as you go along, it can make for a good confidence booster before throwing your new player into the deep end.

8. Firewatch

Firewatch is such ?a fun ride, but in different ways than you might expect. The gameplay is super simple, and mostly involves walking around and interacting with items. The real star of the show here is its story, particularly its voice acting, which can make it the perfect option for someone who prefers?? a more narrative-based experience, if that's something your new gamer is into.

I know for me, story games were a great way to initially get into the hobby, and then I started trying out some more gameplay-heavy games once I learned the ropes. Firewatch also has the benefit of helping players learn the controls at their own pace, similar to Portal.

9. What Remains of Edith Finch

Many of the principles that apply to Firewatch are also in play here. What Remains of Edith Finch is in the upper echelon of game stories, in my opinion, so it's another exc??ellent choice for those who like storytelling.

It also just has some really clever gameplay sections that I think showcase some of the best narrative design in the industry. It's wistful and moving, and is yet?? another relatively short play that can help you learn controls, so this one is a must for new playe?rs.

10. Uncharted 2

If you have a buddy who loves action movies and just wants to feel like a hero, Uncharted 2 is the way to go. I could be recommending the first Uncharted, but parts of that game haven't age?d super well gameplay-wise (I'm looking at you, jet ski level), and the sequel is where Naughty Dog really hit their stride with the franchise, both in terms of narrative and gameplay.

You've got loveable characters, swashbuckling action, and puzzles that will make you stop and think, which makes it perfect for a movie buff. Plus, if they end up liking it, there are still four other Uncharted games they can go and play.

I'm actually fairly impressed with Pokemon Sword and Shield's i??n-game support over the past one and a half years.

I know I know, there's plenty to criticize overall. But the team has been rolling out Gigantamax events and distribution methods on a regular basis this entire time, giving hardcore fans something to look forward to when they log in. They're not game-changing to be sure, but I love that at pretty much any point when I feel like getting back into either game there's something there. Nintendo has been doing the same thing for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: it's great.

So anyway, the next event is actually crowdsourced through a fan ??voting process on this Twitter accou?nt, and you can pick the items that will be doled out to plays "lat??er this summer," as part of the Players Cup IV broadcasts.

'Several issues have been fixed to improve gameplay experience'

Pokemon Sword and Shield came out in November of 2019, and my how time?? flies?.

I mean, adding two very spread out DLC campaigns will extend the life of your game fairly well, and I think at this point I prefer that single SKU additive approach over starting all ov?er with a "third or fourth" version of the game: hopefully it continues! But despite how additive Game Freak was, there is still a laundry list of things fans want them to add, namely the National ??'Dex.

Over 200 creatures were added via the expansions, but it still wasn't a true National 'Dex. So when I saw that Pokemon Sword and Shield was updated this week, I did a double-take and quickly dove into the patch notes...only to?? be greeted by sweet sweet stability.

This latest update "fixed the issue where some Pokemon icons were not properly displaying during online or local wireless battles" and adjusted "several issues have been fix?ed to improve gameplay experience." So if you were having problems playing the game recently, the new version might hav?e shored things up for you.

Maybe Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will add more into the mix? Or Legends will do something? Surely they must be p??lanning around the backlash if nothing changes.

Over the weekend Nintendo held a Pokemon Sword and Shield Players Cup III tournament, and you can ?reap the benefits.

As is the case with these sorts of events, folks can grab a free reward: a Dream Ball. Wait, is that a big deal? Well, sort of! In Pokemon Sword and Shield you can only get o?ne per save file at Wyndon Stadium. The ball makes it more likely to capture sleeping creatures, which can come in handy for finishing the last few entries of your Pokedex.

I'm always itching to jump back into Pokemon Sword and Shield, even though I've pretty much exhausted every??thing I can do at this point.

Whether it's messing around with expeditions or hopping into new Max Raid Battles, the call of getting a slightly different Pokemon is always there. And that's by design! But this time, for April Fools', folks were greeted with so??mething else entirely.

You know how the game has Max Raid Battles from time to time? Well to add insult to injury, they were changed to allow Magikarp to be caught in every raid. And on top of that, he's unable to caught. Yep, Game Freak just trolled th?e entire playerbase.

I can imagine someone playing randomly, or maybe a newcomer trying to mak??e sense of the situation, then slowly going "ooooooohh." These sorts of harmless pranks make up for a lot of the other nonsense this week! Though I'm sure some people are?n't happy that the game is having any semblance of fun and want Game Freak to add the rest of the Pokedex in still.

I really wonder ??how t??he next game is going to go if the full 'Dex isn't in.

87 Armorite and 87 Dynite

Since the November 2019 launch of Pokemon Sword and Shield, Game Freak has done?? a decent job of?? running various max raid events, as well as doling out items for random celebrations.

Some of them require a "community goal" of sorts (a modern staple of the series after online play was implemented widely), and a few are given out just because. Either way, you can sign in now and grab a free Mystery Gift reward. Spotted on Serebii, all you need to do is head to the main menu, select Mystery Gift, then "receive from internet" as normal. After you do so, you'll get 87 Dynite and 87 Armorite Ore.

This was all unlocked because 874,808 Pikachu creatures were killed off in the event announced during the recent Pokemon Day stream. For reference, Armorite Ore wand Dynite Ore were introduced in the Sword and Shield DLC expansions, Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra. While the merits of each can be debated, the latter is especially useful for folks who have exhausted everything Isle of Armor has to offer; as Dynite can be used to finish up you??r Pokemon collection via new Dynamax adventures.

It's an easy Mystery Gift giveaway

Every so often, Game Freak does mystery gift giveaways for free creatures in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Okay, it's mostly just different types of Pikachus. Okay, it's basically all Pikachu, all the time. But at the very least you're getting one that doesn't spor?t a hat this time around. In fact, it will use sing, encore, celebrate, and el??ectro ball; with a lightning rod ability and a light ball item.

Starting today, you can grab a "showstopping Pikachu" in your game, which has the "exclusive move" sing. Yes, it's a singing Pikachu. It still looks the same. To get it, just load up the mystery gift portion of the game and enter: P25MUS1C.

I've had so-so luck over the past year and a half collecting all the free Mystery Gifts Nintendo and the Pokémon Company have sent out for Pokémon Sword and Shield, and there's a good chance I would have mi??ssed this one too if I wasn't in the right place at the right time.

Well, this is where we're at. Amid all of the controversy, people showed up for Pokemon Sword and Shield. In overwhelming amounts.

According to the latest sales data from Nintendo, Pokemon Sword and Shield, billed as a duo (which is historically how Game Freak and Nintendo handle generations), have sold 20.35 million copies. That's huge! Like, right behind Zelda: Breath of the Wild in a much shorter timeframe, ?and "fifth biggest Switch title so far" sales.

But as ResetEra points out, it's actually kind of monumental. This makes Sword and Shield the only Pokemon set of games to cross the 20 million mark since Gold/Silver so many years ago. The only other generation to break 20 million (and soar into 31 million actually) is the very first: Red/Green/Blue.

It's really interesting, looking at the sales data throughout the series. Platinum/Emerald/Crystal are at the bottom, beaten ever so slightly by a collective of sequels: Black/White 2 and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon. While 8.89 million for the latter pair isn't something to shake a stick at, I can definitely see why Game Freak ?might be reticent for full-on sequels in the fu?ture.

Why limit your audience when you can just sell a season pass for a game with a 20 milli??on install base?

A new ban wave is coming

The Pokemon Company periodically tackles big Pokemon bans in waves, and another one is coming around the bend. Last year they cracked down?? on pl??ayers who abused a "disconnect" glitch to get ahead, and n??ow they're focusing on altered/modded data.

As anyone who has been playing Pokemon for any amount of time knows, save data manipulation has been running rampant in the franchise. Duping legendary Pokemon, beefing up stats, you name it. As Serebii reports, any?one caught "modifying save data" will be banned.

That includes no online play for Sword and Shield, as well as no trading or Pokemon Home app use. Game Freak will likely remind p?eople that this is part of the TOS, or just a completely obvious rea??lity: you use Game Genie online, you're gonna get banned.

In line with past ban waves, no refunds will be granted and they can either range from temporary or permanent length??s of time, depending on the offense. Serebii explains that these check-ins are going to?? be "more regular" in the future, so avoid it!

Despite the fact that we've had an entire string of free Pikachus?? recently, The Pokemon Company is trotting out their main mascot yet again for another Pokemon Sword and Shield promo. This time, it's a KIBO Pikachu, which sports ?the wish, swift, thunderbolt, and celebrate abilities; and comes with a comet shard ??item.

So what is all of this for? It's actually a promo from the 2021 "Space Sunrise" stream, which ran via the International Space Station right before the New Year?? in Japan: for some reason, Pokemon were also featured??.

Okay, I was not expecting this: especially one year after the launch of Pokemon Sword and Shield.

In an effort to promote the season pass for the aforementioned game for the holidays, Nintendo is putting on their best Planet Earth impression: complete with a faux David Attenborough narration. Playing it mostly straight, the below video takes you through the Galar region over the course of four minutes and change, mostly centering around the Isle of Armor and Crown Tundra DLC zones.

It's actually fairly well made, taking advantage of some great in-game camera angles to showcase some of the more diverse?? locations. The subtle sound effects (like the crashing waves amid majestic background music) are great touches too! Kudos to the team who put ?this together.

Hardcore Pokemon playe??rs might even get a bit of lore tidbits out of it! Man I'm ready for another Pokemon game; one that hopefully adds everyone in this time.

'#152 may shock you!'

Pokemon Sword and Shield is seemingly done with DLC. Now, there's a chance Game Freak could announce an additional expansion or even a second season pass, Gearbox style, but at the moment, this might be the "complete" edition of Sword and Shield.

The Crown Tundra add-on introduced a ton of legacy Pokemon into the game (as well as a few new ones), but there is still a large amount of creatures that just simply are not suppor??ted. As in, you cannot find them out in the ??game world (or in either expansion) and they can't be transferred in.

According to Serebii.net, there are exactly 234 Pokemon that still have not made the cut. You can check out a full list here, which includes a host of Generation 1 characters and several starters like Chikorita. At the time of publication, the current grand total of all Pokemon across all games is 898: the list ends with Calyrax, the new Crown Tundra ;?lege??ndary. With a new generation, that number could break 1,000.

In spite of its issues, I enjoyed my time with Sword and Shield well enough. But if Game Freak never adds the ability to recoup most (if not all) of these Pokemon, it'll likely be forever-talked-about in the comm?unity. Ga?me Freak has the opportunity to turn the conversation around on this, but I don't know if they will.

Today during this morning's special Pokémon stream, The Pokémon Company unveiled a new promo for Sword and Shield. Naturally, it involves Pikachu.

From here on out, special Pikachu will be distributed for Sword and Shield, tailored around the idea of it being "Ash's Pikachu??" with eight different hats. The first one is available today, with more coming later "through various means." If history is anything to go by, codes doled out during tournament streams and the like are a safe bet.

To get the f?irst rat, enter "P1KACHUGET" into your copy of the ?game.

To unlock the second version, use: "1CH00SEY0U."

A third version has been released: "P1KAADVANCE."

As well as a fourth version: "V0LTTACKLEP1KA."

The second half of Pokemon Sword and Shield's season pass is nearly here, as Crown Tundra is set to debut tomorrow.

So far, all of the promotional materials for the DLC have shown that it could be more expansive than the first half (Isle of Armor), but of course the jury is still out in terms of just how deep it w?ould be. With the current generation's limitations, anything is pos?sible.

For now, things are sounding good. Speaking to VG247, a Game Freak rep confirmed that much of the DLC will deal with the mystery of Calyrex, which is the main questline of the new zone. Beyond that, players will be able to explore another mystery dealing with a legendary tree, as well as hunt down three new legendary birds that shift around the landscape just like the legendaries in Pokemon Gold and Silver.

Additionally, "Dens" are going to be a major mechanic, which lead players to one of the big gimmicks of the DLC: the ability to capture every old legendary. Here's a rundown from VG247 that explains how they'll work: "he twist in the tale is that you’re not fighting with your own Pokemon. At the start of the lair, you choose one?? from a set of randomly-generated creatures – and then each time you defeat a Pokemon in a dynamax battle, before moving on one player can choose to swap their existing, probably injured Pokemon for the one you just defeated. At the end of the lai?r behind numerous battles and branching pathways is a legendary or other similarly rare Pokemon."

Then there's the Galarian Star Tournament, which brings back the big stadium battles from the main storyline. Here, yo??u'll get to partner up with another trainer of your choice, then duke it out tournament style. According to a Pokemon Company rep, it's the "hardest challenge in the game" thus far.

On paper, this sounds like a really complex DLC you can sink your teeth into and might eclipse Isle of Armor in terms of replay va?lue. We'll find out tomorrow.

Say what you will about Pokemon Sword and Shield (and you will!), but I really love ??the Gal?ar region.

Some portions of it feel underdeveloped, but the vistas and actual landscapes are beautiful and fun to look at. Having played Pokemon since day one of picking up Red and Blue at Toys "R" Us, it's crazy seeing how far the series has come: even if it hasn't come ??far enough for a lot of people.

If you also dug Galar, this video from The Pokemon Company's YouTube channel should give you a bit of background on the real-life UK inspiration. One word of warning though: if you want to skip all of the influencer-esque freaking out about how cool all the free stuff is, skip ahead to roughly 5:00 in.

While the actual touring is fairly light in this episode, there's more to come: it's part of a series that will be traveling aro?und the UK "each week." ??If you're in the UK, you're probably thinking: this is just my backyard! Well, your backyards are breathtaking!

You need to fight three enemies before you get the chance

Things are starting to come together for the Pokemon Sword and Shield Crown Tundra DLC: ??a?nd it's good timing! After all, the expansion is out in three days.

While we kn?ew about the additional zone, one of the biggest features of the DLC is the ability to capture old legendaries, going back to the original generation. That means Mewtwo, Articuno, Moltres and Zapdos; ??among many others. Thankfully, grabbing them is going to be a little less frustrating than some folks assumed.

The most recent episode of the Japan??ese TV show Pokenchi has revealed the process for catching legendaries, and things are looking up so far. According to the program, you need to battle three Dynamaxed Pokemon first in a sort of gauntlet situation on a Dynamax Adventure. Once those are out of the picture you can move on to the legendary.

The pro?gram claims that once you get to the end of the line and have the ability to capture the legendary, it's "guaranteed." That's great news, but we'll have to see how time consuming this process is for ourselves.

The third and final expansion to draft some aces

On previous lists looking on the Pokémon meta, we've seen both brand new Pokémon set the tier list aflame as well as witness old favorites continue holding down the fort. Now it's time to see what has changed since the base game launched with how the Isles of Armor brought back classic Pokémon, gave current dex Pokémon new tools, and determine how some returning legendaries may fare when the Crown Tundra releases.

Some that were on previous versions of t??he list, l??ike Gyarados, are still dangerous owing to the strength and longevity of their sets. Others, like Durant, will experience a dip in usage as old rivals like Scizor return, better than ever with new moves like Dual Wingbeat for Scizor specifically.

One such example worth pointing out for Crown Tundra is everyone's favorite meme sweeper, Dracovish. Dracovish's number one problem is a lack of speed. Without speed, Fiscious Rend will be working at half strength when Dracovish inevitably goes second, unless this is remedied with Choice Scarf or Sticky Web support. The new Hidden Patch item coming with Crown Tundra, however, will switch a Pokémon's ability to its hidden ability (w?ith no option to go back if you desire). In Dracovish's case, its hidden ability is Sand Rush, doubling speed during a sandstorm.

It is important to note the obvious, that Dracovish will lose Strong Jaw, which boosts Fiscious Rend's base power by 50%. So ??fixing one problem only creates a deficit in another place for Dracovish, so it can't catch? a break. Of course, Fiscious Rend will still hurt quite a bit, especially if you can guarantee that Dracovish won't be outsped, it just won't hurt quite as much. Sand Rush Dracovish will probably function as more of a late-game sweeper to pick off weakened Pokémon as opposed to Strong Jaw Dracovish working as a threatening wall breaker.

Speaking of Pokémon returning from the base game to the expansions, Cinderace and Rillaboom have made a splash thanks to their hidden ability, which goes to show how changing one aspect of a Pokémon can make a mediocre 'mon amazing. Rillaboom got two new toys during Isle of Armor: access to its hidden ability, Grassy Surge, which creates grassy terrain, and Grassy Glide from the move tutor, which is a strong priority attack that only works on gra?ssy terrain. Coupled with Rillaboom's strong attack stat and a diverse selection of practical items, it's a strong offensive presence that can help revenge kill or wall break. Switching away from a Grassy Glide, only to get smacked by Wood Hammer can hurt a lot, or if the Rillaboom trainer sees the switch coming, it can use U-Turn and maintain the momentum.

Cinderace, on the other hand, is experiencing Blaziken's ubers ban, getting quick banned to ubers in organized play like Smogon due to its own hidden ability, Libero. Libero is basically just Greninja's Protean ability, switching its typing to match the move it uses. The difference between Greninja and Cinderace is that Cindera??ce actually has the offensive stats to back up its ability, alongside wide coverage of moves with high base power. With Libero granting automatic STAB for any move, Cinderace can hit hard with Pyro Ball, Hi Jump Kick, or Gunk Shot, all attacks that are over 100 BP. Cinderace even still has room for a more specialized strategy like U-Turn for momentum, Sucker Punch for?? priority, and Court Change for flipping field hazards like Stealth Rocks. Simply getting STAB with a wide variety of powerful moves already at its disposal makes Cinderace's 116 base attack hit that much harder, not to mention the defensive utility of changing its weaknesses and resistances.

Clefable is really thriving right now thanks to its hidden ability, Unaware. 95/73/90 across HP, defense, and special ??defense doesn't sound like a particularly bulky Pokémon, but Fairy-type carries very useful resistances, and having the choice between Magic Guard and Unaware makes Clefable impossible to chip away at after it invests in defensive EVs. While not the most powerful Pokémon, its bulk?, combined with an incredibly diverse move pool, can make Clefable hard to predict until it gets moving.

Will it use Thunder Wave to paralyze while stalling with Soft-Boiled? Or will it use Calm Mind to boost and turn its Moonblast into a powerhouse? Or maybe it'll use Wish then Teleport to safely heal a hurt s?weeper to regain its momentum. Magic Guard lets Clefable's bulk stand out as it won't take damage ??from Toxic or Sandstorm or even more insidious, Sticky Barb, before trying to pass it on to someone else.

Volcarona, along with every other bug dual-type Pokémon, is currently rejoicing at the prospect of Heavy Boots, the one thing that rectifies the staggering effect Stealth Rocks has had on the meta since its inception. Forgoing a more useful item in favor of ignoring Stealth Rocks along with all other field hazards is an obvious choice considering Volcarona is an examp??le of a Pokémon that is extremely powerful on pa??per but has difficulty actually working in practice due to the threat of Stealth Rocks.

Nothing else has really even changed for Volcarona. It's always been quite powerful with Quiver Dance and a 135 base special attack to really punch holes in opposing teams, but now that it can travel to Galar through Pokémon HOME, it gets to experience life ??in a whole new light thanks to Heavy Boots.

Lastly, before we talk about some concrete additions to legendaries, we come to two Pokémon that share a singular buff in the form of the Isle of Armor move Poltergeist. Ghosts have long struggled to become powerhouses due to almost all of their moves having moderate to poor base power. Shadow Ball is 80 BP special attack that favors special sweepers while physically attacking ghosts are nearly non-existent. Pokémon like Giratina and Dusclops rely on more roundabout strategies to find work, while Giratina-O and Duskinoir rely on alternatives to ghost-typ??e attacks to do damage.

Poltergeist singlehandedly gives them an offensive presence thanks to a beefy 110 BP, 100% accurate attack that only works on Pokémon holding items, which is virtually a 100% guaranteed chance. Duskinoir has always been overshadowed by its Ev??iolite enabled form, and Giratina only had Shadow Force to use, which is a two-tu??rn attack that can be countered easily. Now with Poltergeist, physical ghost-types like these two have more of a presence on the field compared to their usually more passive movesets.

Moving into the realm of legendaries as they have a lot of push with Crown Tundra and the Dynamax Adventure, a few are getting access to new moves to freshen up. Groudon, for example, will get Heat Crash, which will work well due to its weight class as it becomes stronger the more the user outweighs the target. Others, like Kyogre, don't get anything new because they're already too good. Speaking of the weather trio, Rayquaza can not only learn Meteor Beam, giving it access to rock-type coverage, but it also gains Hydro Pump, which I think is overkill on this overwhelmingly offensive force. Even without its mega form, getting this powerful water-type coverage will let it thr??eaten opponents it wouldn't normally be able to intimidate before.

Cresselia has always classically been known as a wall and stall type of Pokémon, preferring to do more damage via Toxic then stalling with Moonlight healing more than anything else. Crown Tundra will give Cresselia access to Stored Power and Cosmic Power, letting Cresselia become impossible to kill wall while simultaneously boosting the power of its STAB Stored Power. While the overall strategy doesn't change (wall out your opponent in a battle of attrition), Stored Power gives Cresselia access to a flashy ?finale after setting itself up to become a problem unless it gets forced out via Whirlwind or Roar.

Lastly on the list is a revisit on the Tapu guardians from my previous draft. While last time I just touched on what they'd bring to the table as they are, they'll now have access to the terrain specific moves that the Isle of Armor move tutor offers. That means Tapu Bulu will get priority with Grassy Glide, Tapu Lele will get a buffed up Expanding Force, Tapu Koko will get an amazing 140 BP Rising Voltage, and Tapu Fini wil?l get Misty Explosion, which is frankly pretty bad, but Tapu Fini's role as a Defogger will remain intact as the pool of useful hazard cleaners is still pretty small. But all these new moves on the Tapus latent terrain setting abilities are sure to make them a deadly force in the meta. I'm a big fan of putting Tapu Bulu's tank and spank strategy on my teams, so giving him Grassy Glide is sure to surprise some people.

But these are only a small handful of contenders for now during Isle of Armor, and in the future with Crown Tundra. Even with just a few new Galarian Pokémon like the legendary birds or the new Regis, a few new moves and the addition of easy access to hidden abilities will make some fun shake-ups to the meta even after quickly finishing whatever content the Crown Tundra has to offer as a single-player experience.

As you know by now, first-party Nintendo games rarely go down in value in the first few years of their existence. The same can be said about Pokemon Sword and Shield, which is st??ill rolling with a $60 MSRP. It ?looks like the upcoming "complete editions" are going to be using that same tactic.

In case you missed it, The Pokemon Company announced recently that there was going to be a physical bundle for both Sword and Shield that also packed in their accompanying season pass. Thanks to an Amazon listing for Pokemon Sword, we now know exactly ?how much that's going to cost: $90. In short, that's literally just the price of the game itself and the actual digital pass ($30), which comes with two DL?C expansions.

So basically, if you prefer physical and haven't picked up the new Pokemon game yet, you can either op??t for this package or the original run and just buy the pass manually. The box says that "no separate download" is required for the expansion pass. Also ??note that this new edition comes with 100 Poke Balls and a Pikachu/Eevee uniform (which were originally pre-order bonuses).

This morning, The Pokémon Company showed us a rather lengthy trailer for Pokémon Sword and Shield's upcoming Crown Tundra expansion, which includes a ton of new Pok&?eacute;mon and locations. It'll also open the Galarian Star Tournament, complete with familiar faces (past gym leaders, Hop, Isle of Armor trainers). You can "form a dre??am team" with these trainers.

The gist involves a person named Peony, who will send you on an adventure through the new region. The Pokémon Company reminds us that "every legendary" is up for grabs in this expansion. Dynamax Adventures are also in, allowing you to team up with up to three trainers and battle Pokémon in the depths of caves. Pokémon Go functionality with Pokémon Home is imminent ("before ??the end of the year"); linking them will grant you a special Melmetal that can Gigantamax.

Crown Tundra is out on October 22, and a phys??ical "all in one bundle" is ou?t on November 6: it'll include the expansions.

Pokémon Sword and Shield still has gas left in the tank. While Isle of Armor came out earlier this year, it's only one half of the season pass. Crown Tundra has yet to be released, but thanks to a new announcement of a Pokémon stream, we may have an idea of when it could be arr??iving.

As a general rule, Nintendo likes to hold big first-party streams for games that have imminent releases. We've seen it before with games like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and it might happen again tomorrow with Sword and Shield. "Fall 2020" is currently underway, after all.

The stream will take place on September 29 at 9AM ET, at which point "updates about the upcoming expansion pass" will be provided. Given that the icons for the stream are the emblems for the two DLCs, it's likely that this will not feature Pokémon Unite news or reveal a new title. Instead, we'll probably get the date for Crown Tundra, as well as more info on the DLC.

We??'r??e set to get another Pokemon Direct fairly soon.

The Pokemon Company still needs to give us more information on the upcoming Pokemon Unite MOBA (which was shown and then promptly shot off into the sun by PR), and we should also probably get a closer look at the upcoming Crown Tundra DLC for Sword and Shield.

Revealed earlier this year, it'll take us to the titular Crown Tundra region as the second part of the pair's season pass. A new clip below from Nintendo South Africa, sent in by a reader, gives us a closer glimpse at what's to come in this expansion; which ostensibly looks bigger (or more impactful, lore-wise) than Isle of Armor.

Remember, if you're getting into the season pass scheme late: you can accidentally buy the wrong pass. Sword and Shield each have their own SKU. Hopefully the sheer number of snafus and customer service? calls they've ?gotten thus far has turned them off from the idea in the future.

But with The Pokemon Company (and thus Nintendo) at the helm, I wouldn't count on it. Things can't jus??t be simple!
