This is all well and good, but some PC games require the pinpoint precision of mou?se-and-keyboard input. That's why we're t??aking a look at the 15 best Steam Deck games, so you know which titles are worth playing on your portable PC device. All of the following games are marked "Steam Deck Verified," meaning you can guarantee a solid experience with these selections.

15. Phasmophobia

Hunting ghosts with friends, what could be more fun? Despite still technically being in Early Access, Phasmophobia is arguab?ly the best g??ame in its genre. You're placed on a map, which can be as small as a suburban house or as large as an entire prison, haunted by a ghost.

There are 24 different ghost types, each offering up three types of evidence to help you and your friends decipher what they are. You find this evidence using various types of ghost-hunting equipment, from spirit boxes to EMF readers. It's not entirely that simple, as these ghosts will drain your sanity before hunting and killing you. Phasmophobia is a blast, and we recommend playing with ??friends.

14. Diablo 4

Blizzard's long-awaited follow-up in its iconic ARPG series was worth the wait. Diablo 4 follows the sam??e general gameplay loop as ??previous iterations, defeating powerful enemies throughout dungeons while collecting hordes of loot to upgrade your build.

While technically an RPG, Diablo 4's quests and storyline play second fiddle to the game's unique brand of chaotic action. There's nothing quite like melting swarms of demons while finding a rare item that takes the havoc up a notch. Some might recommend a mouse and keyboard for Diablo 4, but you can definitely do just fine on a S??te??am Deck.

13. Balatro

Balatro isn't your standard card game. There's almost too much complexity to sum up in a few sentences, but the gist of it is this: it's a roguelike deck-builder where you must score points by playing poker hands against blinds. With these points, you can upgrade your deck and buy? joker cards, which affect the game in various ways. It's absurdly addictive and puts an impressive spin on a classic card game.

Given the nature of Balatro's controls, it really doesn't matter whether you play on a regular PC or on a Steam Deck. It plays very well on Valve's portable devices, so if you're looking for a more laid-back Balatro, Steam Deck is the way to go.

12. Portal 2

Portal 2 might be well over a decade old at this point, but it can still kick it with any modern release on the market. With sharp humor, challenging puzzles, and an endlessly replayable co-op mode, Portal 2 remains one of the best video games ever made.

Valve gets so much mileage out of one simple? concept: you have a portal gun that you can use to open portals around the game world. You must use these portals to solve puzzles throughout each level, most of which are physics-based. Luckily, these puzzles don't require pinpoint mouse precision, which is why this is perfect for chilled-out Steam Deck play.

11. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 had its troubles upon its 2020 release, disappointing almost everyone. In the years since, CD Projekt Red has remained committed to making it the best game it can be via countless patches and the sublime 2023 expansion, Phantom Liberty.

At long last, Cyberpunk 2077 is (almost) everything it was hyped up to be, and it runs great on the Steam Deck. With engaging characters, powerful RPG choices, and the staggeringly beautiful open world of Night City, Cyberpunk 2077 is?? a game you can rea??lly sink your teeth into nowadays.

10. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

If The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth isn't the best roguelike ever, then I don't know what is. Straight from the brain of Super Meat Boy developer Edmund McMillen, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth sees yo??u fight through procedurally-generated dungeons against some of the most terrifyingly??-designed monsters you'll ever see in a video game.

As you progress, yo?u collect items on each floor. This contributes to your build, but not every item complements one another. This means you're constantly making important choices about what to pick up and what to leave behind. Each run is permadeath, resetting you right to the start if you die while progressing through the floors?. Because of the randomized floors and items, it might be one of the most replayable games ever made.

9. Dave the Diver

How many games do you know that can blend the action-adventure and restaurant simulator genres seamlessly? There's not many, let me tell you that much. Dave the Diver is one such title, and it's undoubtedly one of the best games on ??the Steam Deck.

Dave the Diver is split into two ga??meplay sections. During the day, you dive into the ??sea, collecting ingredients from the ocean floor while fighting sealife with your harpoon gun. Later in the evening, you use these ingredients to run a sushi restaurant, improving its reputation through good food and service. All of this is complemented by a gorgeous pixel art style, resulting in a game unlike anything you'll have played before.

8. Resident Evil 4

2023's Resident Evil 4 might be the best remake in the series to date, and that's a high bar to cle?ar. The game sees the return of Leon Kennedy, who is tasked with rescuing ??the president's daughter, Ashley. You're faced with hordes of the undead throughout your adventure, which tops the 2005 original in just about every way.

Its graphics? Stunning. Its controls? Modern. The story? It has a tighter pacing this time around. And that's before we even get to the atmosphere, which is the real star of the show in the Resident Evil 4 remak?e. It's absolutely drip?ping with tension, which carries over even on the small screen of the Steam Deck.

7. Skyrim

13 years after its launch, and there's still nothing that quite evokes the same feelings as Skyrim. It's a classic RPG in every sense of the word, with on?e of the most detailed open worlds you'll ever explore, even after all this time. Interesting questlines and memorable characters are the tip of the iceberg in Bethesda's magnum opus.

On PC, Skyrim modding takes things to another level. Nexus Mods has almost 100,000 mods to download for the game, so the question is: can you mod Skyrim on Steam Deck? Yes! It's a bit more hassle, but it's certainly possible, meaning you can bring Skyrim up to modern standards on your handheld device.

6. RimWorld

Ludeon Studios' RimWorld is a far deeper game than it seems on the surface. At first glance, it appears to be just another construction and management simulator. Simply put, it isn't. RimWorld gives you numerous starting scenarios, where you must at?tempt to survive and escape from a procedurally generated planet.

To make every playthrough unique, it employs the use of an AI storyteller, which can make decisions on the fly to affect proceedings. You can choose from various storytellers, each of which will change its behavior based on various parameters. Want something intense? Go with Randy Random. Want a more traditional narrative? Cassandra Classic will make that happen. The third is Phoebe Chillax, which offers a more laid-back experience. It's this storyteller feature alone that elevates RimWorld above every other game in the genre.

5. God of War

2018's God of War finally arrived on PC in 2022, breaking Santa Monica Studio's masterpiece free from its PS4 restraints. The ??game tells a powerful story between Kratos and his young son, Atreus, and their journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye, at the highest peak in Jötunheim.

Its hack-and-slash gameplay is similar to previous God of War games, yet the combat still manages to feel distinctly modern. That's an achievement in itself. Just everything, from the impeccable score from Bear McCreary to the awesome world design, comes together as a full package to make God of War one of the best Steam Deck games.

4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

How will CD Projekt Red ever top The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt? The culmination of an epic trilogy, this title is an extraordinary RPG, with impactful choices to be made even in the smallest of moments. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features some of the most well-written side-quests you'll ever see, as well as two fantastic expansions in Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine.

For a 2015 release, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt holds up extremely well from b?oth a visual and gameplay perspective. The combat still feels very fluid, which is why it remains one of the best Steam Deck games you can play after almost a decade.

3. Stardew Valley

There's a reason life-simulation fans are still returning to Stardew Valley almost nine years after its release. ConcernedApe's game strips the formula back to bas??ics but does everything ??it attempts just about perfectly.

There's farming, fishing, building, mining, socializing, romancing, and even combat - it's a pretty simple life in Stardew Valley. If you enjoy life-simulators, there's a good chance you've already played this game. If you haven't, there's a good chance Stardew Valley will convert you to the genre.

2. Elden Ring

Elden Ring is not for the impatient gamers out there. This open-world RPG by FromSoftware will test the limits of your patience, punishing you with sweet, sweet death over and over again. It's a classic Souls-like, defined by nigh-impossible bosses and frustratingly infrequent checkpoints, but with a bigger scale than anything the studio has ever attempted before. The satisfaction from victory in Elden Ring will have you jumping for joy.

Given that many would recommend Elden Ring with a controller anyway, I feel safe saying the game works great with the Steam Deck joysticks. Go forth and explore the Lands Between ??f??rom the comfort of your own couch.

1. Baldur's Gate 3

Top spot was only ever going to Baldur's Gate 3. Larian's 2023 CRPG is an instant classic. With deep customization, fun combat, brilliant companions, and a gripping narrative, Baldur's Gate 3 is a game we'll all be playing for many years to come. I could wax further lyrical about its epic wo??rld, engaging quests, and a staggering level of freedom, but I reckon you get the picture.

Baldur's Gate 3 feels made for the Steam Deck in many ways. The turn-based combat lends itself well to the joystick controls, and the slow-paced gameplay in general makes it perfect for k??icking back on the couch and playing at your own pace.

10. Shao Khan (Mortal Kombat 3)

Imagine the kid version of you finally defeating Motaro after countless attempts on your Sega Genesis. You're now on top of the world, but that feeling will only last exactly as long as the next stage takes to load, as you're about to meet something even worse. The beauty of Shao Khan's second �and best �appearance in the series is that unlike bosses suffering from the infamous SNK Boss Syndrome, he's not cheap. Shao Khan doesn't hit?? too hard, or shoot unavoidable world-ending energy beams. He's just a big guy with armor and a hammer. The hammer doesn't seem like a fair gadget in a tournament where most characters only count on ??their hands, feet, and kinetic abilities, but that's not even the toughest part.

Shao Khan's thing is his apparent ability to predict and intercept your every move �even when you try to take a cheap shot at him while he's taking a break from the fight to laugh at the player. Shao Khan might seem like an unfair opponent, but he isn't. Shao Khan is, however, sure to make anyone who manages to beat him into a better Mortal Kombat player.

9. Malus (Shadow of the Colossus)

Good thing we're talking about final bosses only, as saying Malus is "that really big giant" in Shadow Of The Colossus probably w??ouldn't help readers picture what I'm talking ??about.

What I love about Shadow Of The Colossus is that it's all killer, no filler. You have to traverse a great big area, yeah, bu??t it takes you straight to the bosses without wasting your time with pesky minions. Every encounter here is memorable and unique, but Malus takes the cake.

This laser-firing mountain requires players to use all the gameplay knowledge they'd acquired throughout the game, but it's also ?its own, devious, thing. Malus is the best boss in the game, which is quite the achie??vement for a game that already plays like a "best of" boss compilation.

8. Ganondorf (The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker)

It's hard to pick the best Ganondorf, the most persistent final boss in gaming history, so I'm just gonna go the safe way and choose the cutest one. I kid. I know that Wind Waker's cutesy presentation disappointed many fans, but I really do believe that the best �and most gruesome �battle against Ganondorf is the one in Wind Waker.

Dual sword-wielding Ganondorf rules, but even better is how we finish him off by piercing his skull with a sword �how's that for a game that looks "too child??ish"?

7. Vergil (Devil May Cry 3)

Vergil doesn't just act as the final boss in Devil May Cry 3, as we have to fight him two times throughout the game before our ultimate showdown. Still, he plays the part of the stronger (and older?) twin brother perfectly, always showing up to kick our ??ass whenever we thought we'd finally gotten the hang of the game.

Vergil is the perfect foil to Dante, and even though newcomers will likely find him extremely unfair to trade blows wi??th, it'll only be a matter of time for them to unde?rstand how to climb this katana-swinging mountain.

6. Gehrman (Bloodborne)

You could argue that Gehrman isn't the true final boss of the game, but the boss whose presence I still refuse to spoil nearly ten years later is opti??onal, so this is the o??ne we're going with.

We spend the entirety of Bloodborne fighting either hunters or the things that hunters are meant to hunt, and Gehrman is the perfect mix between the two. Gehrman's regular and ultimate forms comprise all the most interesting gameplay elements of Bloodborne??, so he serves both the game's themes and the need for a final challenge perfectly?. Do not underestimate this old man.

5. Senator Armstrong (Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance)

Picking the best final boss in the Metal Gear series is a nightmare, because the only game without a contender is Metal Gear Survive. The Boss is the heart, Liquid Snake is the mirror, Ocelot is the legacy, and Solidus is just plain cool. Still, the world needs only one Big Boss, and I believe that's Revengeance's Steven Armstrong.

Metal Gear expanded upon the perceived limitations of games as vessels for great narratives, which earned the series high praise for closing the gap between games and Hollywood. Still, the best thing about the Metal Gear series is how it conveys surprisingly serious points underneath all of its camp. I believe this never rings truer than with Senator Armstrong, whose rise has ?some haunting real-world parallels. Oh yeah, the boss confrontation itself is also the wildest, most intense, and nearly the most bizarre one on this list.

4. Wheatley (Portal 2)

GLaDOS is a better villain than Wheatley; not to knock down Wheatley, he's a marvelous buffoon, but GlaDOS remains one of the most hauntingly hilarious sociopaths in all of art. Still, the final battle against GLaDOS in the original Portal feels too serious and a bit too straightforward for such an otherwise inventive game. Luckily, the final encounter with Wheatley in Portal 2 fixes that small problem by deliver?ing the perfect mix of comed??y, wild mechanics, and the payoff to one of the best set-ups in video game history.

3. Edgar Ross (Red Dead Redemption)

What better way to conclude a Western game than with a showdown? The final enemy that must be destroyed in Red Dead Redemption only requires you to win a duel. It's as simple as that. No catch, no drawn-out battle, but you must be as quick and precise as you can, otherwise, you'll be looking at immediate death. It's almost as unorthodox as it gets for a final video game confrontation, but it's equally poignant, and victory will bring about one of the coolest and most fulfilling endings yo??u'll ever experience.

2. Giygas (Earthbound)

By the time Earthbound came out, the formula for the perfect end boss in a Japane?se RPG was already out. Just give it various forms, each weirder-looking and wit??h a less-pronounceable name than the previous one, and you're golden.

Earthbound ignored the formula, pulled out all the stop?s, and had players fight it out against what can only be described as a nightmare that a demon would have. The fight against Giygas isn't one of the greatest final boss encounters of all time because of the mechanics at play, but for being the one that best conveys the idea of fighting against a being so a?lien that even the boss itself might be unaware of what it is.

I'd rather not spoil it any further, as this is an experience you should have and not? one you merely read about. Either way, I assure you that, even though this is otherwise a very kid-friendly game in the family-friendly console, this one might end up fueling your nightmares for a few lif??etimes.

1. Sephiroth (Final Fantasy VII)

Multi-form bosses weren't new by the time Sephiroth sh?owed up, but he more than delivered with Bizarro and Safer Sephiroth, the seemingly biblical accurate representation of an anime one-winged angel. Both forms offer plenty of unique challenges, and it's just g??reat to watch all the cool lighting effects coming out of those beasts.

But neither of those show up in my favorite clash against Sephiroth. My favorite final boss in Final Fantasy, and gaming history, in general, is the plain Sephiroth who pulls Cloud back into the Northern Cave for a final showdown, probably just because Squaresoft knew that there's no such thing as kicking Seph?iroth's ass too hard.

The fight isn't even a challenge �we just have to press a button, but we totally deserve it after what tha?t guy put us through.

Portal 2 was released in 2011 to widespread acclaim. Now, 22 years later, there’s a free fan-made mod called Portal: Revolution that perfectly?? re-captures the joy of the game, albeit w?ith the sad omission of a much-loved character.

Released on January 6 2024, Portal: Revolution—developed by Second Face Software—has received positive reviews on Steam. Over 3,000 people have reviewed the mod at the time of this writing, and 94% of those are ??positive. 

One of the reviewers on Steam likened it to the scene in Ratatouille where the chef eats something made by the rat and has a flashback to a heartwarming chi??ldhood memory. They’re right, too.

The game add-on offers eight hours of exclusive gameplay, voice acting that perfectly captures the humor of the original game and challenging levels to work through. Promising to pick up in terms of difficulty where the original Portal 2 left off,?? there really is some challenge to work through.

Sadly, the add-on takes place after the demise of GLaDOS, s??o we’re without her dark sense of humor. But with so much on offer, we can’t hold that against the developers. 

As well as taking the difficulty of puzzles up a notch, the developers have also introduced some new elements to gameplay. There’s a new variant of laser cube and field that cl?eanses gel. Second Face Software have also resurrected a feature that was removed during development of the original Portal 2: "Pneumatic Diversity Vents."

If you're tired of waiting around for a third Portal game, there is a (sort of) solution out there. Until Valve takes it upon it??self to carry on with the series, fans will take the reins in an unofficial capa??city. And that's exactly what's happened here.

Portal: Revolution is not exactly a threequel to the Portal universe. Instead, it's actually a prequel that takes place before the events of the second game. Brought to us by Second Face Software, this mod comes complete with eight hours of gameplay, which includes more than 40 new test chambers. The above trailer almost looks like an official new entry or something Valve would put together. As a community project, it definitely looks impressive, fitting in between the two installments with its own story and characters. It should be noted that you will need a legitimate copy of Portal 2 before you can use this free mod.

The modding community strikes again

You can always depend on the fan base to keep video game universes alive. Portal 2 recently got its own VR mode, thanks to the dedicated community, which is good seeing as Portal 3 is probably never going to happen. Prove me wrong though, Valve. Prove me wrong.

We've circled this proverbial airport many times before, especially when it comes to Half-Life??. The continuation of Gordon Freeman's story is a dream many are s?truggling to hold onto these days.

Without any official sequels in the make that we're aware of, we can at least take solace in the unofficial stuff that's out there. Portal: Revolution is just one example of people showing they're not ready to accept Valve's unwillingness to bring us something new (Half-Life: Alyx notwithstanding, of course).

We'll likely never see a third entry in Valve's puzzle magnum opus. But that's okay, because Portal 2 is a magnificent beast that maybe doesn't need improving on. However, one way it can be improved a little bit is with v??irtual reality.

As spotted by DSO Gaming, modder Gistix has released an early version of their Portal 2 mod that makes the game compatible with VR headsets. You can download it right now from GitHub, with version 0.1.5 having released just ?a few hours ago.

It's still a work in progress, but it at ??least gives you a chance to take on the test chambers of Aperture?? Science in a more immersive environment.

If you don't have a VR headset, the embedded video above gives you an idea of what it would be like to play the game using one. Perhaps it's not the same as actual??ly playing it, but it offers a glimpse into Gistix's mod.

It doesn't specify which headset in particular it's compatible with. Presu??mably it will work with any device you plug into your PC, so long as it meets certain requirements.

Playing off the 360 with one of its greats

September's Xbox Games with Gold have been announced, and there's a pretty notable inclusion. And capping off the end of Xbox's 360 offerings is Valve's exceptional Xbox 360 puzzler Portal 2.

Over on the Xbox Wire, the company has revealed four newcomers to September's Games with Gold. As always, Xbox Live Gold members will have access to these games for a limited time as part of Games with Gold. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members can also take advantage of this perk, and if you haven't played Portal 2 yet, you really should.

Portal 2 was first released in 2011, as a sequel to the already fantastic Portal. It is an incredible puzzle game that expands on the ideas of the first, while also incorporating some stellar story and details around the world of Aperture Science. Seriously, everyone who has played Portal 2 can recall J.K. ?Simmons delivering the lemons monologue.

It's now over a decade later (ouch, my bones) and Portal 2 is still one heck of?? a game. If you've somehow missed this one and d??ig puzzles, don't miss the chance to try it out.

This is also a swan song for the Xbox 360 era of Games with Gold. The company announced earlier this year that it would stop rolling out Xbox 360 games starting in October. Xbox says it has "reached the limit" of its ability to bring 360 games to the catalog. However, Xbox One titles will continue to roll out on the serv??ice.

Alongside Portal 2, Xbox is bringing three oth?er games to the service, staggered across the month. This includes a god-felling action game, some sick bass, and an amusement park designer. Here's the full lineup.

And we're right there with him

It's been over eleven years since Portal 2 was released, and it looks like the fans aren't the only ones who are clamoring for Valve to start on a follow-up to one of its most beloved games ever. Erik Wolpow, co-writer of both of the Portal games, as well as plenty of other famous Valve titles like Left 4 Dead and Half-Life: Alyx, went on the Kiwi Talkz Podcast this week and urged Valve to start work on Portal 3, as originally reported by VGC.

His exact words were: "I am not getting any younger. We are reaching the point where it’s crazy to think [that we’re] literally going to be too old to work on Portal 3, so we should just do it.�/p>

First off, I think Wolpow is hilarious, and I think from this interview it's really easy to tell that he wrote the Portal games. I also think it's cool that he wants to? come back, because it shows how much he really enjoyed working on those games. His comments also show that while he may have been instrumental in creating the game series we know and love, his wish for another sequel alone ??isn't enough to get the ball rolling at the studio.

Wolpow goes on to discuss that a lot of fans are wondering what the team over at Valv?e is actually working on,? but assures us it's not all for nothing.

"As much as it seems like Valve often [is] just a bunch of people sitting around sipping gin and tonics by a pool, everybody’s working," he said. "They’re working all the time, it’s just you don’t always see the [result], it doesn’t always end up coming out, or it comes out years later, it gets turned into something else. So ev??erybody is accounted for, I guess is what I’m saying."

This constant shifting and changing of plans is a classic tal?e of game development, and Valve has enough of that sweet Steam money to keep the lights on while?? they try to figure out their next move.

I'm with Wolpow �if they ever want to make another Portal game, they need to do it soon, and they need to do it with him and the rest of the original dev ?team while they still can. I get the feeling that any other attempt won't be as successful.

Finally, I can bring GLaDOS on the go!

Portal is one of my favorite game series of all time. It's challenging, it's funny, and it's exactly the kind of bombastic romp I miss in AAA games right now. As announced during today's Nintendo Direct, I can finally take the Portal series on the go with me, because both titles are being ported to the Switch in the Portal: Companion Collection. According to Valve, this will include both full single-player experiences, as well as the co-op mode from Portal 2, which will be?? playable via split-scre?en, local, or online multiplayer.

I'm shocked that it took this long for Valve to port out these games, considering their continued popularity. Portal 2 just celebrated its ten year anniversary last year, and the first Portal game ??came out all the way back in 2007. Even if the wait was long, I think it'll be worth it to get to play through the games again on my favorite console. Better late than never!

There was a time when making props from movies, games, or comics was something to be left to the professionals, but with how accessible and affordable 3D printing is these days, fans are making elaborate pieces from the comfort of their own homes. That's exactly what this fan of Portal did when he decided to make a two-foot-tall replica of GLaDOS that he 3D printed, painted, and hung themselves??. It doesn't look like? a simplified version of our favorite AI villainess, either �she's complete with all of the wires and guts that make her what she is.

The or??iginal poster doesn't disclose too much information ab??out what went into this massive project, but they did say that it took them 150 hours over the course of two years to complete!

Plenty of other Reddit users had suggestions on how to further improve the project, like adding a light-up eye with motion sensors so she wakes up and speaks to anyone who might walk by, but it sounds like OP is planning to somehow sync her up to their Portal game, so that she insults them whenever they die. They hung it dire???ctly over their computer desk, too so there's really no escaping her.

As a huge fan of the Portal series myself, this is one of the coolest pieces of gaming memorabilia I've seen as of late. The fact that hobbyists can download the plans for a project like this and make it at home in a way that's fairly inexpensive says so much about how far the t??echnology has really come.

I know that personally I wouldn't want to hang a giant GLaDOS over my head bec??ause she would definitely freak me out, but I'm happier for knowing that this exists out in the world.

Nothin' like an endless scroll of names

This post contains mild spoilers for the end-credits sequences of Marvel's Spider-Man, Portal 2, and Tales from the Borderlands. If you still want to play these games and be surprised, maybe come back to this one later.

After the last ten years, Marvel has really conditioned us to sit all the way through the end credits of their movies. There is something fun about the anticipation that sinks in as you sit through the 10+ minutes of scrolling names, waiting for one last tidbit before the lights come up. Post-credits scenes are certainly a thing in games (the irony that Marvel's Spider-Man has one is not lost on me), but ma??ybe there's some wasted potential there considering most of them don't employ this same strategy.

W??hen you don't have the promise of extra content at the end of something, do you ever sit through the credits anyway? Because I certainl?y do.

Making games is a tremendously difficult feat to accomplish, so I usually will sit through the credits and read the names because I want to. One of the most moving moments of my career thus far was seeing my name in the credits of a game for the first time, so maybe it's just my own wishful thinking that someone saw my name nestled in there with the other QA testers and was proud of me for a moment, too. Sometimes it's just fun to sit there, read someone's name, and say to ??yourself, "I don't know who you are, John Doe, but I appreciate the work you did on this thing I enjoyed." It's kind of weird, but I do it anyway.

Sometimes, developers go out of their way to make credits a lot of fun. Tales from the Borderlands is a great one, mostly because I love licensed music in games, and that use of "My Silver Lining" by First Aid Kit was iconic. It really felt like it brought the whole journey together, you know? I also love Portal 2's credits �that turret oper??a and GLaDOS' song were such a fun way to end one of the?? most hilarious games I've ever played.

Other times, sitting through credits can be a really cathartic thing too, especially if the game was emotionally moving. A prime example of this is the end of the first Last of Us game. That final moment ??is so? poignant and heavy, you kind of have to take a minute to recover, and the credits can help with that.

How has it been a decade already?

The year is 2011, and the haunting, distant sounds of the Aperture facility are reverberating through our unfinished basement. My brother's at basketball practice, I have free reign of the Xbox. I've spent the past half hour trying to solve this puzzle, but I'm not getting up until I solve it. "Hello, who's there?" th??e turrets chirp at me.

They always kind of creeped me out, but I push it aside and… aha! I climb up to the tallest platform in the room, throw myself off with reckless abandon, and land my port??al at ?the last second. Now I'm hurtling through the air, and land gracefully in front of the exit. I pump my fist, celebrating my victory, and feeling like the smartest kid in the world.

Back when Portal 2 first came out, you couldn't escape it. Kind of like Minecraft or Fortnite, it was one of those games that was everywhere. T-shirts, plushies, LEGO, stuff like that. My ninth-grade science teacher even had the Aperture Science safety posters on his classroom wall, which always provided me with a fun read when I? would get bored in class.

Even as someone who only tangentially knew about games at the time, I knew what Portal 2 was. "The cake is a lie" had already taken over the internet years before as a meme, and Let's Plays of the co-op were all over YouTube. Portal 2 wasn't just a game, it was a cultural touchstone, and one that has become as big a part of gaming history as Call of Duty or GTA.

Of course, that could be said about nearly every Valve game. Their catalog is one of the most impressive out there: Team Fortress, Half-Life, Dota, Left 4 Dead, Counter-Strike?. Basically everything they touch t??urns to gold — especially Steam, but more on that later.

That being said, all these years later when I went to replay Portal 2, I thoug??ht, "surely this can't be as good as I ?remember." I was so, so wrong.

After learning that one of my close friends had never played it before, a small group of u??s decided it was worth watching him struggle through the puzzles as we facepalmed in the? background. Besides, nothing says quarantine like a game where you're trapped in a science facility, right?

I was so impressed with how the game had held up, I decided to look up when it came out. April 18, 2011. Damn, ten whole years? It's pretty hard to believe, to the point that if someone wiped my memory, and told me it came out today, I would probably fall f??or it.

When I first picked up Portal 2 back when it came out, I hadn't heard of the series before. I really wasn't gaming all that much either, as it was released when I was too bu?sy with my nose in young adult books.

But I saw a commercial for Portal 2 on TV, and I knew right away it was something I wanted to try. So, I saved up my allowance and bought a copy to play on my brother's Xbox 360. I don't remember much about that playthrough, other than that I couldn't play it while I was home alone, because they nailed the unc??anny, liminal feeling of the environments that creeped me out if no one else was there. It was crazy to have that feeling come rushing back to me, now sitting in my own apartment.

So when we decided on replaying, I was super excited about it. There's nothing better than a game that you remember really loving, but that's all you can rem?ember. It's lik??e having a clean slate so you can enjoy it all over again for the first time.

And enjoy it, I did. Within the first minute or so we were already laughing, and I cannot stress enough how much I love writers Erik Wolpaw and Jay Pinkerton's work.?? There's this quick, witty humor they have going on that I can never seem to get enough of. The sheer volume of jokes is already amazing, but the number of jokes that land is even more so (it's all of them).

One of my favorite jokes happens while the game is teaching you the controls right at the beginning, but I won't spoil it for anyone who hasn't had the privilege of playing it yet. I just appreciate the fact that Portal 2 uses everything ?at its disposal to get a chuckle out of you, from the tutorial to the chapter titles to even the achievements.

For me though, I think my favorite part of the game is Stephen Merchant's performance as the idiotic AI Wheatley, the sequel's new addition to the series' minimal cast. Merchant is a prominent British comedian, best known for his appearance in the English (and original) version of The Office.

Valve designed and wrote Wheatley's character specifically with Merchant in mind, because he was just too perfect for the job, which is obvious to anyone who has played it. In an interview with IGN, Merchant said he accepted the role without thinking much ??of it, but when he started telling his friends about the role, he began to understand the kind of pressure he was under. "I was petrified," he tells the interviewer, "what if I blow it?"

As I'm sure you could assume from what you've read so far, he in fact did not blow it. His comedic timing and delivery are always perfect, plus the fact that any? time he goes off on improvised monologues (which is often) they're always so random and hilarious yet perfectly in character.

The real dramatic challenge of Wheatley's arc, though, is bein?g both wacky and idiotic while also being maniacal, which Merchant yet again nails. Being a lovable villain is a fine line to walk, but Wheatley achieves it, just like GlaDOS before him.

As much?? as I could go on and on about how brilliant Merchant is, I have to also give props to Ellen McLain's return as GlaDOS, as well as J.K. Simmons' portrayal of Cave Johnson. Perfect casting is a theme with Valve (especially considering they have enough money to get whoever they want for a role), and the writing always allows for the actors' undeniable talent to shine through.

The introduction of Cave and Caroline's characters, and the deep dive into Aperture's history, was such an interesting way to give the game a new flavor while at the same ti??me keeping true to the feeling of the original and expanding?? the world's lore all at the same time.

The commitment, humor, and ease of these performances are truly awe-inspiring, and enough to cement the game's place as one of the best ever created in my book. But the voice acting is only one aspect of what makes Portal 2 so incredible.

The visuals also hold up well, which is partially due to the fact that there aren't really any people on screen a?t any point. Attempts at photorealistic human faces seem to age the fastest in my opinion, so avoiding them all together definitely helps.

Even so, Valve seemed to go for a stylized version? of reality that feels immersive and lifelike, ??but doesn't feel so cartoony that it takes you out of it. In our playthrough, I think the only sign of aging we saw were a few textures popping in, but that was pretty minor.

Like the performances, another aspect that will alw??ays age like fine wine is the core game design itself. The puzzles? are ridiculously, addictingly fun. I'm so glad I didn't remember any of them, because I had a blast trying to work them out all over again.

I remember thinking that I wish we had more momentum-based puzzle games, because there's a certain kind o??f thrill to flinging yourself off of a high platform to be catapulted toward the exit. The fact that the game's field of view is in first-person makes it all the more thrilling.

Not only did the designers use the core portal mechanic intuitively, but there are so many other mechanics added on top of it, in??cluding some from the original game like cubes, emancipation grills, and turrets, as well as new ones like faith plates, the di??fferent kinds of gel, light bridges, excursion funnels, lasers, and so on.

The thing about all of these different elements that I was so impressed with is how organically they are introduced and utilized as the puzzles increase in difficulty. When we hit the last few puzzles, I was so shocked to see how many different elements we were using? to solve, and how all of them fit together so nicely. Valve, color me impressed, even after all these years.

E??ven when everything else fades away, and what used to seem shiny and new feels dated, that?? game design is always going to feel fun and exciting, which to me is what sets apart a good game from a truly great one.

The craziest part of this is that in early development, Valve was exploring other types of puzzle mechanics other than the portals. In an interview w??ith Fast Company right after the game's release, Wolpaw revealed that they thought there might be more to explore within the Portal franchise, but they "discovered through playtesting that people wanted portals in their Portal 2 — and GlaDOS, and the whole vibe of the first game." Thank you playtesters, whoe??ver you were.

I know I've spent this whole time talking about Portal 2'??s impeccable single-player game design, but I have to throw in a shout-out to the co-op mode too. There was no greater joy than dropping your buddy to their doom or squishing them in that one maze puzzle (you know the one) and I will forever be chasing that high.

The other thing I got to thinking about was Portal 2's length — its run time clocks in somewhere around the eight-hour mark. I feel like recently, there's this idea in the games industry that the bigger a game is, the better. Just look at the hype surrounding the worlds of games like Cyberpunk, The Witcher, or GTA V.

I think a great example of the inflation of playtimes is Naughty Dog's Last of Us series: the first game would run you roughly twelve hours, while the sequel was 25 to 30 hours. The sequel's doubling of the original's run time was a selling point during Part II's marketing campaign last year, and touting a game's long run tim?e seems to be more and more common these days.

Now, that's not to say that these games are necessarily worse for being bigger or longer, it's just that when I was playing Portal 2, I ??couldn't help but notice how tight ??and polished the whole experience felt. As a writer, I was so damn impressed because every line spoken by a character felt amazing — every joke landed, every emotional beat hit.

It felt like?? if ??you took away one sentence a character spoke you would miss something big. Spending hundreds of hours in a game can really be a blast, but sometimes I can't help but wish for more short games that pack a hard punch in a smaller window.

I've played a lot of games, but I really can't think of a studio that has Valve's command over game design. The people who worked on Portal, and so many other titles, really are the best in the industry, and ??they have the success of their IPs to show for it. That's why it's such a shame that Valve all but stepped away from game development.

Steam, Valve's digital video game distribution service, was released in September of 2003. Initially it served as a platform to distribute updates?? to their own games, and soon expanded to put out games from third-party publishers as well.

In the f??irst few years after Steam's creation, only publishers could get their games onto the storefront, but that all changed in 2008 with the introduction of the Steamworks software development kit. From then on, anyone could put their games up for sale, which revolutionized the gaming industry. Without Steam, the indie scene wouldn't be as successful and vibrant as it is today, thanks to Valve's ingenuity.

By 2013, Valve had taken over 75% of the market space for digital distribution of PC games, and by 2017, users purchasing games through Steam had soared to over $4.3 billion. Yeah, that's billion with a "b."

When you think about it, it makes complete sense that Valve wouldn't be making games anymore. Developing games is insanely expensive, risky, and takes?? a ton of work. Creating something like Steam is basically every company's dream — it's low maintenance but turns the maximum profit. It means they don't have to crunch, or worry a?bout if they're going to get a return on their investment during the development cycle.

But at the same time, it's such an incredible shame that the studio decided to turn away from games as their main focus. Thanks to Valve'?s track record, how talented their developers are, and fans' enthusiasm for highly anticipated sequels, it seems impossible for them to fail. To have them step out of the spotlight feels like Tony Stark deciding not to build the Iron Man suit because it wasn't cost-effective, but what can we do?

Of course, Valve has released a few games over the past few years, like Dota Underlords and Half-Life: Alyx. These more recent titles have been met with mixed results (looking at you Artifact), ??but it's hard to say Valve has lost their touch when making games?? isn't their focus in the first place.

Players seem to get their hopes up with every new announcement, only to be disappointed when their next release isn't the full game we all h??ope it to be. Part of me wishes they would either go all in or stop developing altogether, just to save us the heartache.

Despite it all, I don't think I'm alone in saying that Valve's games will forever be remembered as some of the all-time greats. From Team Fortress to Half-Life to Left 4 Dead, these games raised us, in a way. Hell, Portal 2 wa??s the game?? that taught me how to use twin-stick controls.

I'm certainly going to be secretly hoping Valve will make an epic comeback in game development, but even if they don't, I have plenty of fond memories to look back on, and for that I'm grateful. Happy anniversary, Portal 2.

Prototypes revealed at New York Toy Fair

Portal 2 had a great single-player mode, but the most fun I had with the title was playing through the devious puzzles in the cooperative two-player section. Instead of controlling a human, your Portal gun in this mode was carried by one of two cyclopean robots named Atlas and P-body. The pair never say a word, but they have tons of personality that comes out through t??heir movements and gest??ures in the game.

Earlier today, the Good Smile company revealed at the New York Toy Fair that two new Figma models of the robots will soon be available. While toys depicting the pair h??ave been obtainable in the past, the Figmas look to have a lot more points of articulation. Potential VR spin-off

Gabe Newell recently held an AMA (ask me anything) on Reddit and people were obviously drooling at the chance to question the existence of Half-Life 3. While that was deftly avoided by Gaben, there were some interesting hints droppe??d about a potential spin-off to the series that could be in the pipeline. When questioned about whether Valve was actively working on any kind ??of single-player game, Gabe responded with, "Yes."

After that, another user further clarified the question by asking whether Valve was working on a new IP that is set within the Half-Life/Portal universe. Gabe also replied with, "Yep." Now, this could mean a number of things, but more than likely, it has to do with the HTC Vive. Gabe did bring up the possibility, later stating, "We think VR is pretty imp??ortant as a t?ool for interesting games."

While that could be anything, Valve actively backs the HTC Vive, so that would clearly be its target device. You could also take this to mean that Valve is currently working on two separate projects, one in VR and one as a spin-off. Then again, The Lab is a fully VR tech demo that takes place within Portal, so who is to say what is really going on?

Source 2 is also mentioned in the AMA and Valve seems to be going full force with their new engine. While it has only debuted with DOTA 2, so far, it looks like Valve is not giving up on their technology. "We are are using it as the foundat?ion of some unannounced products," Gabe confirmed.

Someone else also brought up the potential movies that Valve was working on with J.J. Abrams. Apparently those are still in the works, so I guess we can look forward to th??ose not sucking...maybe.

Free mod for Portal 2 owners

It's been a while since I've thought about Portal 2, but the time is right. Portal Stories: Mel is out now on Steam, free to anyone who owns the core game. This is a standalone mod with its own voiced storyline, soundtrack, and custom assets. A new four-hour-plus Portal adventure, basically.

"In the early years of Aperture Science Innovators, Cave Johnson's scientists rushed to get everything working to catch up with the growth of the company. Unfortunately, not everything worked as it should. Mel took part in a faulty experiment, the Aperture Science Innovators Short-Term Relaxation Vault, falling asleep for years. Now, with a fake Cave Johnson telling her she needs to esc??ape the facility, and a new device, the mysterious Aperture Science Innovators Handheld Portal Device Prototype, her m??ind races with questions."

And I'm hooked. I particularly like the team's design philosophy: "The difficulty is always in the logic, never the execution. Portal Stories will n??????????????????????????ever re?quire any ninja skills." High hopes for this one.

Portal Stories: Mel is a lovely-looking community-made mod for Portal 2 that's due out sometime in Q1 2015, according to the title's store page.

The leng??thy 20+ level mod will feature a new protagonist call?ed (you guessed it) Mel, who will be partnered up with an all-new personality core and will ultimately face off against a "new, still unknown threat."

The mod will also feature custom story and dialogue, as well as new models, textures, animations and a really nifty-looking '70s version of the Portal gun. Once released, the mod will be free for all owners of Portal 2.

Afte??r seeing this trailer all I want to do is play through the base game again using that adorably clunky-looking '70s Portal gun!

Sweet, d00d!

People often love Valve because they're the company that keeps on giving. Today, you'll be able to bottle some of that love in the form of free Portal 2 DLC, exclusively for the PS3 version of the game. The DLC is said to be a "thank you" from Sixense (who developed the Hydra motion and worked on Move support), to owners of the In Motion DLC.

The new add-on itself is an all-new co-op campaign designed for the PlayStation Move, in the form of a free patch -- so just update your game, and go look for it. If you don't have the game or In Motion yet, they're 20% off as of today (40% for Plus owners). While I don't think that Portal 2 i?s as good a?s the original, it's still a great game, a ton of fun for co-op purposes, and at this point, it has a ton of content.

Wheatley's abomination is just as scary in real life

The Frankenturret, as they're officially called, are the Portal 2 turrets merged with a weighted storag?e cube. Wheatley had fun creating them in the game, and I'm sure artist corroder666 had fun making the Frakenturret in real life. Best of all, corroder's creation actually lights up. The legs will even move too!

Time to dig out the ol' PS Move controller

As announced on the PlayStation Blog, the In Motion content for Portal 2 that was originally playable using the Razer Hydra motion controller will be releasing on PlayStation Network this Tuesday, November 6. You might recall this as having those neat-looking leve?ls revolved around? manipulating the size and rotation of objects.

On the same day, Portal 2 will see a digital release on PSN, supporting the Move controller for single-player, co-op, and naturally the new DLC. In Motion will?? be $9.99 for regular players and, of course, PS Plus subscr?ibers can get a discount at launch -- in this case, 30 percent off both the full game and the add-on.

In one year's time, what started off as an easier way for players to access new user-created content for Team Fortress 2 has grown to encompass more than just sweet hats and guns, with a touch of J.C. Leyendecker or Norman Rockwell vis??ual style thrown to them. Dust your finest Ghastly Gibus, Steam Workshop is o??ne year old!

Since last year, Steam Workshop has added over 16 games from various publishers to it's modding community, with many others hoping to join in on the fun. At last count, the number of user-created items for these games now ranges around 300,000; with at least 200,000 of those dedicated to Portal 2 content. With the recent addition of software to their library, GameMaker Studio has also seen a boom in co??ntent from full games to modelli??ng tools.

So far St?eam Workshop has had over 55 million items downloads through its service, and considering the passion and dedication of these individuals those numbe??rs can only go up from here.

Aperture Science's "Perpetual Testing Initiative" has just undergone a major expansion. An update for Portal 2 released today which allows users to now create puzzles requiring cooperative play to add to the more than 170,000 single-player levels t??he community has already created since the creation tool was released this May.

In addition, a new "Quick Play" option has been implemented which provides easy? access to the top-rated maps across a range of catego??ries. That sounds like a pretty good thing to have if you're going to have hundreds of thousands of stages on offer.

And, in an effort to make sure every possible human being on Earth has played Portal 2, Valve has used this as an excuse to provide a tradeable 75% off coupon for the game to everybody who already has a copy of it on Steam. Toss the coupon to that one person you know, if such a thing e?xists, and get cracking on those test chambers!

Thanks to Valve's newly released education program "Teach with Portals", schools will now have the opportunity to teach their students through Portal 2. No, really.

Valve has taken Portal 2's recently released Perpetual Testing Initiative expansion and created a more educational version known simply as the Puzzle Maker. Valve has described the Puzzle Maker as a tool that, "...empowers students and educators to craft unique puzzles, explore worlds, and share custom lesson plans?."

Valve also says that the program can help students "develop an intuitive understanding of physical principles such as mass and weight, acceleration, momentum, gravity, and energy" as well as with "critical thinking, spati??al reasoning, pr??oblem solving, iteration and collaboration skills, and encourage overall inquiry into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) learning."

Teach with Portals is available for download to all educators that successfully complete the sign-up process for the summ??er beta right now. Teachers will be able to begin drawing up lesson plans and have them ready come autumn?.

Of course, this being Valve, the program will be co??mpletely free. Why doesn't that surprise me?

Portal 2's latest DLC installment, "Portal 2 In Motion," is b??eing shown on the E3 show floor today. It includes the same level?s from the DLC for the Razor Hydra controller and offers players a more tactile experience as they manipulate objects in the environment to solve puzzles.

The add-on is coming out for PlayStation 3 later this year and has Move support. It's one of the few things that's managed to pique my interest in terms o??f Sony's p??eripheral.

Released just this week, the Perpetual Testing Initiative expansion to Portal 2 has already resulted in a success of some kind. No, no. Don't tell me. I'll figure out the appropriate adjective eve??ntually.

More than 35,000 tests have been ??created by players with in excess of 1.3 million downloads of those tests and Lord only knows how many screamed expletives and dead test subjects. Come to think of it, Valve probably knows that too.

In a related story, Steam has started a sale promotion in celebration of the Perpetual Testing Initiative launch by marking down prices on Portal 2 and fellow Steam Workshop game, Skyrim, as well as a number of Workshop items for Team Fortress 2.

Mr. Cave Johnson, CEO of Aperture Science, recently issued a message to all his employees, confirming the existence of the Perpetual Testing Initiative (PeTI), and its status being operational as of now. In the message, rather tha??n explaining how it works, Johnson instead opts to categorise his employees as having less intelligence than a dog. However, he reassures them that all is not lost, as he, personally, will be there every step of the way, ensuring that they will eventually become smarter than dogs and that he can squeeze as much out of them as his fists physically can. And by them, he means you. 

That's right. All of you who play Portal 2, it's time to prove your worth to your boss or you'll end up like Pet?e??r, and you don't want to end up like Peter.

Starting next month, the possibilities for portal puzzles become as infinite as spaaaaaaaaace.

Valve has announced a new update for Portal 2 which will arrive on May 8. The "Perpetual Testing Initiative" will give players the capability to make their own puzzles using a simplified, built-in level editor. The editor will also be able to publish levels directly to the Steam Workshop for others to download and rate. A select group of puzzles made with the Perpetual Testing Initiative will also be made available directly within the Portal 2 game.

Obviously, this DLC is only releasing on the PC and Mac versions of Portal 2, proving once again that there are just some things a console isn't good enough for. Go forth, minions. Provide me with enough spatial puzzles to last me a lifetime. So mote?? it be.

Valve has divulged what's next for Portal 2, following the recent release of the "Peer Review" add-on: "?an easy-to-use" map editor that's expect??ed to come out in early 2012.

This editor will hopefully push crowdsourcing a step forward, since it's said to let players "view, play, and vote" on community-created single-player and co-op test chambers "with a simple cli??ck."

There was no mention of applicable platforms, though I suspect V?alve is still trying to figure o?ut if this stuff is feasible on consoles. That'd be swell.

Sequel time!  For the originals, here's Crysis and Portal.

I've learned my lesson.  Crysis joins the list of franchises I'll never touch again.  That's not to say Crysis 2 was a bad game.  Just a bad all around experience.  That aside, Crysis 2 really shocked me by turning the franchise around and bringing it closer to all the other, better first person shooters.  Giving the player stuff to hide behind and a power suit that can actually do something.  Now if Crytek could just comp?e??nsate me $1,000 for all the broken stuff the "Crysis Curse" brought upon.

Portal 2 was, as fully expected, some great stuff.  And you know what else is great?  Whenever I see Destructoid's name appear in a trailer.  It makes me proud to post on this site.  And that robot head guy...nicest person you'll ever meet.   I'm skillfully avoiding posting anything further about Portal 2.  Yeah, it was good game.  We a??ll know this.  Did you also know that we see with our eye's and hot things are hot?

Probably should have reinstalled Portal 2 last night. Whoops. The new, totally free "Peer Review" dow??nloadable content is now available for PlayStation 3, PC, Mac, and Xbox 360 players.

This add-on expands the P-Body and Atlas adventure wi??th another test track to get stuck in, plus? a single-player and cooperative Challenge Mode.
