At this rate, the priciest PS Plus subscription tier is a tough sell if you're not into cloud gaming

PlayStation Plus offers three subscription tiers—Essential, Extra, and Premium—and out of all of them, the middle option feels like the best value. A?s someone who treasures retro games, especially the ability to easily play them on modern hardware, I thought I'd be a regular Premium subscriber above all. But the initial wave of PS Plus Premium classics was sparse, and the rollout since then has been as incremental as folks had feared.

Sony's updates to its classic catalog have been disappointingly irregular, and whenever it has added old-school titles from the PlayStation 1, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable days, they typically haven't been the most exciting inclusions. To this day, many fan-favorite games that defined these consoles remain absent from the catalog, such as the original Crash Bandicoot and Spyro the Dragon trilogies.

Right now, it seems like most of the value of Premium is tied to the streaming-only PS3 classics and cloud gaming in general. Unfortunately for players like me who never got into the PlayStation Now ??service, that's not a great deal—but it could be so much more enticing if the PS1, PS2, a?nd PSP library did more heavy lifting.

For all of the backlash, I've slowly but surely come around on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack thanks to the N64, Sega Genesis, and DLC inclusions. I hope PS Plus Premium can step it up too; otherwise, I'll swap to the Extra tier w??hen my sub runs out.

As more games join the service, I'll update this list, including notes about any PS1 classics wit??h trophies, or games that are exclusively playable with PS Plus Premium.

This would be a much different conversation if PS3 games weren't tied to the cloud.

It's worth noting that some beloved games are included in the separate Remasters list on PlayStation Plus Premium. Notable examples include Patapon, Patapon 2, LocoRoco, LocoRoco 2, Toukiden: Kiwami, and Gravity Rush. So while it's? a lot of various newer remasters, there are gems that fit the "classic" vibe of the PSP and Vita era.

As for PS3 games, again, they're streaming only on PS4 and PS5. There are way too many for me to list out and link �sorry! But Tokyo Jungle and PixelJunk Monsters sure do rule.

A portable Xbox has inhabited the realm of hearsay and myth ever since the first Xbox came out. Do you ever?? feel sad that Microsoft was the only big console manufacturer to dodge the draft to enter the portable gaming war? Fret not, as a fan just turned the original Microsoft Xbox into an enhanced Portable version of its former self. The result is visually reminiscent of the Steam Deck, but its design features no lack of that sweet early '00s Xbox edge:

I really do think it looks great, with the Xbox's menu screen going together perfectly wi??th that edgy des?ign, but it's also a technical marvel.

Twitter user Redherring 32 explains that this isn't new hardware or emulation. We're not looking at an attempt at making a smaller console like the PlayStation classic. Redherring 32 really did take the time to "slimify" the original Xbox's hardware to fit into a ??portable shape. He trimmed the Xbox's motherboard to fix the case, then added a 9�?480p display and pure digital video/audio. He also modernized the original package by adding a 100W USB C charge and play and is still working on adding WiFi functionalities for Xbox Live.

From Sandover Village to Metal Head City, the Jak & Daxter games have take?n us to many different locations over the years.

While there hasn't been a recent entry, these PS2 and PSP games are worth venturing into. Those two PlayStation platforms are fondly remembered for a reason, and games like the Jak and Daxter series are definitely a part of the fond memories th??at many of us have from those wonderful times.

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy - 2001

2001 was the year this mascot platformer franchise kicked off, with Jak and Daxter teaming up to find a way to reverse the latter's otter-like tran??sformation

The Precursor Legacy is more light-hearted than future entries with vibrant graphics and a brighter tone in its script. One of the most impressive parts of the first game is that you can see previously explor?ed a??reas in the distance. Therefore, it was a good showcase of what the newly-released PS2 could do.

Jak II - 2003

Inspired by the likes of Grand Theft Auto 3, this sequel to Jak & Daxter took on a darker tone. After entering a strange portal, Jak is captured and experimented on with dark eco for years. Daxter eventually breaks him free, and Jak swears vengeance on ?his captors. The protagonist looks older, potentially trying to make the series appeal more to older audiences. ??The script became a little edgier, too.

Haven City's the main hub of the game as Jak and Daxter can explore the open area in vehicles, quite similar to GTA. It also introduces guns into the gameplay experience. One of my major complaints is that the checkpoints are too sparse. According to HowLongToBeat, it takes around 17 hours to finish the story, likely somewhat due to?? the ba??d checkpoint system.

Jak 3 - 2004

Developer Naughty Dog came out swinging with a sequel one year later. Man, it was amazing to have sequels released?? so quickly back then. This time Jak and our otter-like friend step into the desert landscape of the Wasteland. Instead of New Haven, the hub area is Spargus City. The game features new vehicles like dune buggies that players relished controlling. There are also animals, if you prefer that option.

Jak 3 had positive reviews when it was first released. IGN gave it a staggering 96/100 score. "Jak 3 offers a gamer just about everything," said reviewer Ivan Sulic. "There are twelve interesting guns, four melee attacks, a dark Jak with melee and ranged attacks all his own, and a light Jak capable of shielding himself, flying, freezing time, and self healing." Despite this game releasing just a year after Jak II, it added a lot of features into the mix.

Jak X - 2005

Jak X took racing to the extreme, yet kept the storyline of the series accelerating forward. Inspired by the likes of Mario Kart, Jak and his friends use items to defeat their foes in front of them and pass their position. Each of the race vehicles can be destroyed, and similar to the Burnout series, you'll see the car parts flying all over. ?It's an absolute rush to play ?this game, even to this day.

At the beginning of the game, Jak and his friends are poisoned by Krew. The only way to get the antidote is to win the Combat Racing Championship. What's present is a funny script with the quips you'd expect from Jak & Daxter. Jak X is the final Jak & Daxter game developed by Naughty Dog, as the studio moved on to the blockbuster Uncharted series.

Daxter - 2006

Our animal companion Daxter starred in his own PSP game back in 2006. It tells the story of Daxter between the very beginning of Jak II and when he later freed his pal. This game was developed by Ready at Dawn, the studio that would go on to make The Order: 1886. Inst??ead of Jak's guns and kicks, Daxter uses an electric? swatter to exterminate bugs.

During platforming segments, Daxter throttles a flamethrower to propel himself, which he'd also employ for combat. Similar to his human pal, Daxter rode vehicles to get around the city. The game was an impressive graphical showcase for the PSP at the time, releasing one year after the platform's launch. It currently has a decent 85 MetaCritic score overall, ranking just above Jak 3, ?which is an impressive? feat for a portable entry.

This is the only game not available to play on PS4 and PS5 in some shape or form. Hopefully, a port arrives for Play?Station Plus Premium members soon.

Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier - 2009

PlayStation's last effort with the duo is Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, from High Impact Games, launching on both the PSP and PS2. It's since joined the PlayStation Plus Premium re??tro games lineup. Instead of a hoverbike or a dune buggy, Jak pilots a battle ship. Daxter also turns into a strange dark eco monster that fires orbs towards his foes. He even spins like C??rash Bandicoot, perhaps a reference to Naughty Dog's origins.

Despite the new vehicle and Daxter transformation, The Lost Frontier retu?rns to the simil??ar platforming and third-person shooter hybrid gameplay you'd expect.

Unfortunately, The Lost Frontier is commonly known as the worst title in the series. It currently holds a 71 MetaCritic score, which is far lower than prior entries. "As you might expect from a new developer’s take on a series with such history, The Lost Frontier doesn’t feel essential," said Game Informer's review. "If you miss this gam??e, you’re not going to be missing any major plot movements or character deve?lopment in the Jak universe."

Despite this game teasing another adventure, this series has become dormant ever since. Jak IV artwork was showcased in a special Limited Run Games offer, but the original studio Na??ughty Dog seems to have moved on from the series, which is a huge shame.

A match made in Hell

The DualSense is my favorite current-generation default controller. I am a huge fan of handheld gaming. By rights, Sony's just-announced Project Q, a handheld console that appears to have all the same features as the DualSense, sho??uld be right at the top of my hardware wishlist. And yet I feel no warmth towards that little machine at all.

That's because Project Q is not actually a handheld console. It's the latest and worst in a long line of "kinda handhelds," a trend that I feel pretty lukewarm towards that started with the Nintendo Switch. These are "handheld consoles" that primarily or exclusively exist to play home console games. They're neat. I love my Nintendo Switch. I'm sure I would lo?ve my Steam Deck if I own??ed one. But they don't fill the same space as real handhelds in my mind. And Project Q is the worst offender yet.

Portable, kinda

Project Q is a streaming-only handheld. Out of the box, it will use the PS5's remote play feature to stream games.? In case you haven't caught on to the ?problem yet, it's this: the Project Q is being developed not as a console but as an accessory for the PS5. And it's not even an especially useful accessory.

Because PS5 remote play requires a constant internet connection, its away-from-home applications are pretty limited. Sure, you could bust it out at the coffee shop for some quick Returnal sessions, but if you're looking for something to leave in your bag and grab whenever you've got some downtime in your day, you're probably out of luck. You will also look like a massive dork using it anywhere outside of your own home because of its garish and gamerly DualSense handles (I like them, but they do not scream "things I want other people to see me using"). Beyond that, there's also the apparent 8-inch screen, which is a full inch larger tha?n the Nintendo Switch OLED and Steam Deck. Those devices are both already stretching the definition of "portable" considerably, so Project Q may as well have left it behind entirely.

The largest elephant in the room here is that a PS5 remote play handheld already exists. A whole bunch of them exist, actually, and there's a non-zero chance that you're reading this on one of them right now. Yes, of course smartphones already have PS5 remote play. And it's quite good! There are also already a ton of mobile-ready controllers - as a matter of fact, the DualSense is compatible with iOS and Android devices. It's hard to figure out who the target audience for Project Q actually is, even before cons??idering the still-secret price point.

Why should I care?

To be clear, I'm not a Sony shareholder. The good folks at Sony can make whatever bad business decisions they want. But I am someone who desperately misses the halcyon days of portable handhelds. If Sony insists on dedicating tons of resources to products that general consumers aren't really clamoring for, then I'd really prefer if they made a new Vita.

Frankly, I just miss real handheld games. Consoles that actually fit in pockets and games that are designed to be played on the go. I know those games are still out there - in the time since I last wrote on the topic?, I've come to appreciate that there really are quite a few 3DS-ish games on the Switch and Switch Lite, and that the App Store is not as much of a wasteland as I had assumed. But at this point, handhelds that exist to put home games in your "pocket" (or, more realistically, your purse or backpack) are so popular that even the worst version ??of that concept takes priority over a new dedicated handheld. It bums me out!

I don't really like the idea of Project Q. I don't see the point of it. But more than that, I don't like what it represents. Hardware companies have been hammering home the idea that the dedicated handheld is dead for more than half a decade, and it feels like Sony is finally putting the last nail in that coffin. In the place of the PSP or PS Vita, we now have a tablet for nobody designed to play the exact games yo?u can already play at home, but worse. Instead of honing handheld design philosophy, it feels like the industry at large just wants to get rid of it.

I am into the PlaySta??tion earbuds though. I'll wear those.

Feeling Catty

Capcom has quietly issued a brand new trademark for the unannounced title Monster Hunter Puzzles: Felyne Islands, suggesting that the Japan-only PSP release, Airu de Puzzle, may be getting dusted off for an all-new worldwide release. The tra????demark was filed with multiple international licensors.

As noted by Gematsu, Airu de Puzzle is a cute, block puzzle title that launched on PlayStation Portable (PSP) way back in 2012). The fun handheld title has players battle it out in typical block-busting action, championed by the adorable feline friends of the Monster Hunter franchise. The backstory sees the characters, (and even some of the monsters), of Airu village gather together for an exciting puzzle festival, which will also, conveniently, p??rovide plenty of the mythical ene?rgy to bring prosperity back to the island.

Now, to be clear, this is just hearsay, but the new title of Felyne Islands sure sounds like a localization of the 2012 release, unless Capcom is planning to build a brand-new title from scratch. Given the newfound love of Monster Hunter on a global scale, it would make sense that the developer might simply be mining its back catalog for timeless titles that would most certainly sell in 2023, perhaps when afforded just a little HD polish. Either way, we'll be sure to give you the heads-up when Felyne Isles is officially announced, in whatever form it eventually pr??esents itself.

A legendary cast of characters

The best Kingdom Hearts characters have a ton of personality, have been through hardship, or simply have powerful and exciting abilities that dynamically elevate the series' battle scenes. A key element why Kingdom Hearts resonates with so many people is not just the non-stop action; but the passion behind the cas??t's motivations.

Characters like Sora and Roxas aren't afraid to express their emotions: to cry, to scream, to love, to smile. And?? many of the legendary series characters are more intriguing than the average RPG cast, and it's refreshing to see heroes, (or in some rare cases, villains)??, that we are able to relate to.

Warning: There are spoilers for Kingdom Hearts 3 and Kingdom Hearts 3: Remind in this list.

10) Xigbar/Luxu

One of the best factors of the Kingdom Hearts narrative is how it intrigues its fans? with subtle no??ds and mystery.

Xigbar is certainly one of those characters that make you think. If you've played and finished Kingdom Hearts 3, you'll know he is in fact Luxu, the Master of Masters' right-hand man. His witty humor makes him a great foil for Sora, and his boss battle in KH2 is phenomenal.

9) Goofy

Despite his clumsy?? origins in cartoon form, Goofy is a reliable ally for Sora. He's the one in the Keyblade Hero 3 that gives the spiky-haired hero valuable advice and is the level-headed person in the group.

He's ??endearing and kind which makes him a great ??friend!

8) Master of Masters

We really don't know much about the Master of Masters, but from his few appearances so far, fans have been intrigued by his presence. He seems to have ever??ything planned with the Book of Prophecies in his mind and has a strangely goofy (not our pal Goofy) vibe from him.

His personality makes him such an odd antagonist, and the intrigue makes him one of the best Kingdom Hearts characters.

7) Xemnas

Xemnas is a badass antagonist in Kingdom Hearts 2.

The Organization XIII leader has dual blades, and his battle skills with these l?aser swords would put even Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul to shame. Xemnas is also an antagonist who has a just cause for his actions. He wants himself and his fellow Nobody Organization members to have hearts again but can only do so by making Sora defeat the Heartless. Therefore, he causes chaos throughout the worlds.

6) Xion

Xion is another nobody stuck with a dreaded path ahead of her. Those who have played 358/2 Days know that she's a fun, charismatic character that'?s similar to Sora in many ways. Roxas and Axel get to know her throughou?t the game as she struggles to wield the keyblade.

The story behind her existence is a fascinating mystery that begins to unravel as the days continue. By the end, your heart will be broke?n as a friendship is torn apart by fate.

5) Aqua

Another character Kingdom Hearts fans love (myself included!) is Aqua. She is strong-willed, disciplined, and has a sharp wit about her that few other Kingdom Hearts characters possess.

She has a stern exterior, but when it comes to her friends, she will do anything in her power to protect them, especially Ven, who drifted to sleep for a decade before she could rescue him again. She's one of the best Kingdom Hearts characte?rs in m??y mind because of her adept abilities and strength.

4) Axel/Lea

Axel (or Lea) is a Nobody that nearly everyone loved as soon as he?? appeared on-screen. He has a rambunctious personality and likes to work out?side the lines.

His unpredictable nature and break-the-rules flair helped him gain a buddy in Roxas. He also goes through a tragic story as he's forced to take out his own best friend, who has lost their memories. Axel is just plain one of the best Kingdom Hearts characters: "got it memorized?"

3) Roxas

The character that has arguably lost the most in the Kingdom Hearts series is Roxas. He loses his friends, ha?s his body completely taken away from him, and is told that he was never meant to exist. It's quite tragic! During his time in Twilight Town, he tries to think positively. He is loyal to his friends like Hayner and Axel.

However, Roxas is less trusting of others than Sora in many ways. It makes for a refreshing change of pace from Sora's happy-go-lucky approach. He's more critical, able to think on his feet, and is a sharp wise-cracker. He also has a wonderfully dramatic theme song. Hopefully, we get another ??game with Roxas again, his badass dual-wielding style included.

2) Sora

To some, Sora can be a nuisance. He's loud and obnoxious at times. However, what makes Sora one of the best Kingdom Hearts characters is his compassion for others. Unlike many video game protagonists, he is willing to show his feelings. He begs on his knees to see Kairi again towards Organization XIII member Saix. He cries when the Guardians of Light fail in one fell swoop in Kingdom Hearts 3. 

That willingn??ess to show his emotions, within a genre filled with masculine protagonists, is a breath of fresh air. He's super relatab??le.

1) Riku

It can be argued that Riku has the most character progression of all of the cast in the KH series. He grew accustomed to the darkness as Maleficent convinced him to twist him into a servant. He betrayed his best friend Sora for the wellbeing of Kairi, (even fighting against him). Then, after Xehanort's Heartless took over his body, Riku suffered for a long time, even taking the form of the person he ha??tes.

Get ready

If someone told me they were creating a new OutRun with 3D graphics, I’d be extremely skeptical. OutRun was not merely a raster racer through and through, it’s the God-empress of raster racers. I would think that adding some depth to that would hurt the appeal. Not so, because OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is about as faithful as I could imagine.

To be clear, OutRun 2006 is sort of the sequel to the sequel. OutRun 2 was released in arcades in 2003, and followed up with a port to Xbox in 2004. Afterwards, OutRun SP was released in 2004 as an upgrade to OutRun 2. OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast is a console (and PSP) combination of? the two titles. It is the ultimate version, and I have no idea why it hasn’t been ported since. Probably the?? Ferrari license. It’s always licensing.

Magical Sound Shower

I feel like OutRun 2006 is unexpected since the racing genre had long moved on from the seminal 1986 arcade title. What I thought would have happened is some soulless simulation racing game with the OutRun name slapped on. Instead, OutRun 2006 is OutRun. The only thing that really changed is that n?ow the g?raphics are in 3D. New mechanics and progression are piled on top of it.

The setup is the same; you take the wheel of a Ferrari, with your girlfriend sitting next to you. Then, you take off on a journey across a branching course. While there are rivals on the road this time around, you’re not required to pass them. You merel??????????????????????????y have to get to the end of the course before your time expires.

That’s easier said than done, but the addition of drift is a welcome feature. The drift is that special kind of unrealistic that we’ve seen in the Mario Kart series. You can throw your car into a drift by pum?ping the break in a turn, and then it’s stuck there until you deliberately steer out of it. You can snake back and forth with it, in ??a way, never having to leave it at all. It’s an amazingly perfect fit for the series.

Love kills

Or, at least, that’s the regular mode. There are two of these big branching courses: OutRun 2 and OutRun SP. That’s already a lot of course, but to ensure that you don’t put the game down immediately after completing a run of each, there are alternate modes. There’s something of a campaign that have you completing smaller missions and beating rivals in a race. That’s probably the best way to gather Out Run miles that can be used to unlock more Ferraris and additional track??s?? on the soundtrack.

The most unique is perhaps the Heart Break Mode. While the OutRun games have classically had you travel alongside your girlfriend, this time around, she tells you to kill. Okay, I’m being slightly facetious. She doesnâ€??™t just tell you that you must commit vehicular manslaughter by crashing into other cars, sometimes she tells you to evade aliens or run into ghosts. If you’re unable to fulfill her perfectly reasonable demands, or even if you’re j??ust too slow, she’ll start physically abusing you from the passenger seat.

I really think the protagonist of OutRun could do better. A woman who leaves you because you don’t wreck your high-performance sports car by turning it into a murder machine is probably ??not worth your time. I get wanting a little excitement, but my idea for excitement is going? through the Popeye’s drive-thru.

Splash Wave

There’s a wide spread of what you can unlock, from over a dozen Ferraris to remixed and classic tunes. Considering Splash Wave is unequivocally the best piece of music ever composed for a video game, it’s unusual that there are even other tracks available. However, there are three versions of Splash Wave, including the original. That’s immediately the best s??oundtrack ever assembled.

My biggest complaint is that it takes a long time to unlock new gear, and that means you’ll be driving the same courses a lot. Regardless of how much unique mileage is in the game, you’ll always have to drive the first stretch of road, and frequently need to see the second areas. As much as I love OutRun, I feel the formula works best in small sessions as opposed to grinding through it to unlock more stuff. You can choose individual slices of tracks, so you’re not just racing the same ones repeatedly, but I feel shortening the exp?eriences drains Out Run of some of the things that make it special.

Passing Breeze

I may be repeating myself, but I didn’t think a 3D OutRun would really work, let alone one that was created in the �0s. I suppose it’s important to remember that in the late-�0s and early-�0s, Sega was creating some of the most unique games that hit the market. Even if some of them aren’t the best (I don’t like the Sonic Adventure games, I’m sorry), titles like Crazy Taxi and Panzer Dragoon Orta were in a class of their own. They just don’t make games like these anymor??e.

Speaking of which, it pains me that we haven’t gotten ports of any of the games I just mentioned. It feels like Sega was on an apology tour, and we chose to forgive and literally forget. OutRun is even worse since we’ve received ports of the original title but not Turbo OutRun, OutRunners, OutRun Europa, OutRun 2019, or OutRun 3-D. Considering Sega is one of the better companies when it comes to making its classic library available, this seems like an issue that needs addressing. Especially when it comes to OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast.

The fan group Team K4L have announced that their translation of Kurohyou: Ryu Ga Gotoku Shinshou will be released this August. Initially, they had hoped?? to release it last year,? but unfortunately had to delay it.

Sega has come a long way when it comes to localizing their Yakuza/Like a Dragon series, so we’ve been eating well. Like a Dragon: Ishin! was once argued by Sega as being a poor choice for localization, but despite that, we just recently finally got it over here. However, in a recent interview with The Gamer chief producer Hiroyuki Sakamoto said of Kurohyou, “I think if we wanted to develop something, we're not really looking at the past, we're looking to the future, and we think that we want to put our efforts and our priorities at making new titles for Like a Dragon.�That’s not a “no, definitely not,�but it’s not looking good, so it’s always great to see fans step in to bring a title?? to a wider audience.

Kurohyou: Ryu Ga Gotoku Shinsho is a 2010 spin-off of the series for PSP. Rather than an attempt to simply transplant the Like a Dragon/Yakuza formula to the portable, Sega enlisted AKI Corporation (now known as syn Sophia) to put their own spin on it. AKI should be a familiar name to anyone who played N64 wrestling games, as they’re the developers behind WCW/NWO Revenge and WWF No Mercy. These ?titles, as well as the others they put out on the console, are still regarded as some of the best pro wrestling games ever released.

The gameplay focuses more on one-on-one combat, but the narrative features the familiar neighborhood of Kamurocho and is packed with mini-games and side quests. Combat is modeled closer to Def Jam Fight for NY, rather than the more beat-’em-up brawling of your typical Yakuza/Like a Dragon game.

K4L will be releasing the translation patch this August under the name Kurohyou (Like a Dragon: Black Panther).

Portable power!

The most popular current-generation console is a handheld. Computer companies with limited experience in the console market are jumping in with handhelds of their own. There's no denying it: portable gaming is in the ??midst of a renaissance. But as companies continue to release handheld consoles, and as consumers continue to buy them, I'm struck by an interesting question: what was the last mainstream handheld game?

I'm not talking about a game that you can play on a handheld. At this point, you can play basically any game ever made on a handheld. I'm talking about a game built for handhelds, one that benefits from a smaller form factor, lower processing power, and increased portability. Handhel??d consoles are about as big as they've ever been... so where are ?all the handheld games?

Very important pockets

Think back with me on simpler times. Remember when companies like Nintendo and Sony would have two main?????????????????????????? consoles on the market at once? A chunky home device and its lean, mean, pocket-friendly little sister? And, crucially, remember when they had different libraries? There was a kind of separation of powers in those days, and it led to some really compelling design decisions.

The limited power of the handheld has also always been of some import. Patapon, Loco Roco, and Echoshift are all wildly beloved PSP and Vita franchises, and it's hard to imagine any of them connecting on the PS3. While home consoles were in the midst of a graphical arms race, pushing more and more cinematic stories, Sony was quietly publishing some deeply innovative and interesting titles on their dedicated handhelds. At home, you get Halo and The Last of Us. On the go, you get a rhythm tactics side-??scroller.

Most of these games are designed based on a simple philosophy: a great handheld game is built on the idea that it will be played in your hand. It's a game in which nothing is lost on the small screen, and, indeed, one in which something is gained. Patapon plays great on my PlayStation 5, but its miniature heroes, are built for a smaller world. The characters bear simple designs that are readable on a? smaller screen. They address the player directly, assuming a level of intimacy that the PSP facilitates nicely. Most importantly, the tight, brief levels are the k?ind of thing that belong in a back pocket, not on a TV stand.

A delicious bite

When I talk about games that are truly built for handheld play, it's hard to avoid Pokémon: I have long believed that the original Pokémon games would have faded into the realm of the cult classic on home consoles. These games are full of smart design calls that make them sing on the go. Of course, Pokémon has some pretty foundationally pocket-s??ized ideas. A game about going on an adventure and finding new things outside was undoubtedly able to more fully resonate with young ch??ildren who could actually take it with them on their own mini-journeys.

Portability in Pokémon is baked into its ethos, but it also p?lays a meaningful role in its design. Battles are tactical, but they're usually brief affairs. Every moment offers up the chance to see? a cool new character, or to win a really tough fight. Satisfaction and engagement awaits around every corner... which also means every play session, no matter how bite-sized, is satisfying and engaging.

"Brief but satisfying" is the aim in a good handheld game. That's also why a lot of homebound games earned a revival in the back seat of Mom's car. Series like Final Fantasy and Persona earned second lives through handheld ports - where sprawling RPGs with intense stories were once considered TV-oriented affairs, ports like Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions and Persona 4 Golden posited that a sixty hour game with three minute fights might actually be more digestible on the go. These games were already satisfying in bursts, so they made for a natural fit on the PSP and PS Vita. Likewise, Tetris' earliest releases were on Soviet home computers, but it??s most iconic incarnation was on the original Game Boy. As it turns out, people like score-chasing dopamine hits in their pockets.

A necessary lifeline

Handheld design philosophy also left the door open to iterate on home concepts. When home gaming systems entered the 3D era, a lot of franchises made the jump with them. Handheld consoles needed games, too, but sprawling adventures didn't always play as well on the go.?? That meant older design philosophy met with handheld design philosophy to keep certain corners of the gaming world alive.

I often think of Metroid Fusion. This was a 2D Metroid game released on the Game Boy Advance exactly one day before Metroid Prime, which would become the "main" Metroid series for the following twenty years. My personal opinions on Fusion aside, it is a great portable title. It's fairly linear by necessity, because it is designed to be played in shorter bursts by more casual players. More notably, though, it's an actual 2D Metroid game - I can't help but feel that if the GBA wasn't around, 2D Metroid might have disappeared entirely. As a matter of fact, when a new 2D Metroid game finally arrived on the Nintendo Switch in?? 2021, it was a retooled version of a DS game.

Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda fo?llowed similar traject??ories: as the home console games got more expansive, the portable games tightened the bolts on classic concepts, offering up some of the best games in their respective franchises.

What now?

In 2023, the distinction between "handheld" and "home console" is becoming increasingly muddy. The Nintendo Switch, of course, exists to destroy that distinction entirely, serving as both Nintendo's current generation handheld and its home console. Games made for the Switch need to be both home console titles and handheld titles (and the handheld bit usually cedes itself to the big-screen bit). The Steam Deck, similarly, is a handheld that plays PC games. At least for now, basically nothing is built for the Steam Deck. It also bears mentioning that, while they do fit in your hand, neither of these consoles are especially portable, so the "on-the-go" philosophy that defines games like Pokémon isn't something developers need to consider.

I think the impact of this has been almost instantaneously obvious. It seems unlikely that we'll ever get, say, a new 2D Zelda game on the Switch. When an old 2D Zelda game was brought over, it was prettied up and converted to 3D to make it look and feel less like a handheld game. Sony has seemingly given up on its handheld platforms entirely. The company offers PS4 and PS5 remote play on mobile devices, as well as?? a meager offering of remastered PSP titles for its home consoles, but looking at a list of Sony-publis?hed games from the last several years, it's apparent that the portable design philosophy has vanished.

There have been proper handheld games developed and released more recently - Panic's Playdate, for example, is a comically underpowered monochrome handheld with a dedicated and compelling library. It's become something of a safe haven for independent developers looking for a quirky platform where smaller games can flourish. Developers want to make new games like Patapon, and the Playdate offers them that space. While there are plenty of Playdate games that would be comfortable enough on home consoles, the most beloved titles on the platform tend to be games like Bennett Foddy's Zipper, a tactical R??PG full of brief, satisfying encounters.

In terms of mainstream consoles, though? We're pretty much ou??t of luck. Every game made for Nintendo's flagship handheld must necessarily be made for its flagship home system, and nobody else is even trying to offer a smaller counterpart to their massive offerings. There's a portable hole in the market, and I truly hope someone comes along to fill it.

Sony veteran bows out after decades-long tenure

Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced that one of the PlayStation brand's longest-running developers, Masayasu Ito, will retire from the company at the end of September. Ito's departure was first communicated to Bloomberg, before the publisher made its own statement on the official SIE website.

Masayasu Ito started with Sony way back in 1986, where he worked on the company's range of vehicular stereo systems �back when audio equipment was the cornerstone of Sony's technological output. Ito woul??d not join the PlayStation brand until the year 2000, when his design kn??ow-how would be put to use in the development of PS2 accessories.

Ito would become a key player in the division, becoming part of the architecture team for the PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles, as well as the popular handheld console PlayStation Portable (PSP). Most recently, Ito had the unenviable task of co-engineering Sony's most recent hardware release, PS5. Creating powerful, next-gen technology against the backdrop of severely hampered production, component, and distribution shortages is no small feat, though the console would see its heralded arrival on November 12, 2020.

Ito's contribution to the PlayStation brand's success in the past two decades is clearly his legacy, having overseen the release of some of the best-selling game consoles of all time. Ito will retire from Sony Interactive Entertainment on October 1, 2022, when he will be replaced by Lin Tao, who currently serves as SIE's SVP of Fina?nce, Corporate De?velopment, and Strategy.

After neglecting retro game fans in August, Sony has several PS1, PS3, and PSP classics lined up for PlayStation Plus?? Premium subscribers in September, as well as more games joining the PS Plus Extra tier's Game Catalog. It's n??ot the splashy lineup I hoped to see.

As I've said befo??re, if you've got the money and interest, Essential is where it's at right now. The main limiting factor is time (and maybe storage or bandwidth caps).

Some of us were willing to take a chance on upgrading to PlayStation Plus Premium for this first year, but if Sony wants to keep people hooked long-term, it'll have to do better. A lot better. The fact that there's a treasure trove of potential classics to pull from makes it all the more painful to see stuff like Toy Story 3 for PSP instead of, say, Dino Crisis.

It is nice to see Sly Cooper return ?in any capacit??y, but you're out of luck if you can't (or won't) do streaming, which remains the only way to play these PS Plus PS3 games.

On a happier note, I'm stoked to dig into Chicory, Toem, and Alex Kidd. I think September is a pretty good one for the Essential and Extra tiers. More fuel for the backlog. It's a shame that th?e classics side of the equation isn't �or at least does??n't feel like �a priority.

Something old, something new

The launch date of the revamped PlayStation Plus service is closing in fast. Today, Sony revealed some of the games coming in the launch time frame, spread across the Essential, Extra, and Premium?? PlayStation Plus plans.

The new plans are set to go live on June 1?3 for the Americas. They're split into three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential comes in at $60 a year, while Extra goes up to $100 a ??year and Premium sits at $120 annually.

With Essential, the regular PS Plus benefits will still keep rolling ou??t. Most significantly, that means the lineup of monthly games. An upgrade to Extra or Premium, however, starts to open up the broader catalog of games, both recent and not-so-recent.

For both Extra and Premium, subscribers get a catalog of PlayStation 4 and PS5 games to play. These seem similar to the PlayStation Plus Collection that rolled ??out with the PS5's launch. There's a pretty decent list of PlayStation Studios games, as well as some third-party entries.

Bringing back classics

On the Premium side, the highest-tier subscribers also get some of the classics. Some will have better resolutions and frame rates compared to their original versions, or arrive as the rem??astered versions. Several PS2 games are the PS4 remastered versions, for example. PlayStation 3 games are also available, via streaming.

One note in particular stuck out: "Also, players who have previously purchased the digital version of select games from the original PlayStation and PSP generation will not have to make a separate purchase or sign up to PlayStation Plus to play these titles on PS4 or PS5." So if you've bought these before, they're back up now for no additional cost. Once they're released, owners can head to the PlayStation?? Store and download a version for no additional cost.

Lastly, Sony also spotlighted some of the time-limited game trials coming to PlayStation Plus Premium owners. For now, it's a short list: Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Horizon Forbidden West, Cyberpunk 2077, Farming Simulator 22, Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, and WWE 2K22. It's expected t?o sit at about two hours for most g??ames, and time will only count down when you're in-game.

A month??ly refresh is locked in too. For all PlayStation Plus owners, that includes the monthly game lineup that we've always had. An additional refresh will occur midway through each month with new games for PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium plans too, though the number of games will vary.

Inquiring minds really want to know each and every legacy PlayStation game that will be included in the upcoming PlayStation Plus Premium plan. At $120 per year, it's the most expensive of the three subscription tiers, but sometimes, nostalgia gets the better of us. Today, there's evidence that PS1 classics Mr. Driller and Tekken 2 �and the PlayStation Portable's Ridge Racer 2 �wil?l be playable with a PlayStation Plus Premium membership.

As shared by Reddit user the_andshrew on the subreddit r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, the PlayStation Network backend has references (in this case, Title and Concept IDs) pointing to Mr. Driller, Tekken 2, and Ridge Racers 2 �that's the Japanese name.

After the original post, Worms World Party and Worms Armageddon were discovered, too. All five sound pretty believable as PS Plus Premium picks. It's not much, but it's a start! We're also expecting multiple Syphon Filter games, based on recent ratings in Korea.

When will we hear more?

We should have a b?etter idea of what to expect from the PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP catalog in the coming weeks. Sony is rolling out the revamped PS Plus plan in Asia first, starting on May 23, with Japan up next on June 1, the Americas on June 13, and Europe on June 22.

I'm anxious to see how "global" the PlayStation classics lineup ends up being �will some games be overly locked down to certain re??gions? I hope not! Until Sony announces the full game list, I'd expect to see a lot more? backend clues pop up like the ones above.

What are your must-have PlayStation classics? What would you actually sink time into in 2022? There's so much to pull from these platforms. And come to think of it, it's been way too long since I've touched my PSP; I never got a replacement battery after it bulged.

I hope third-party companies play ball in a big way. If Capcom isn't going to put out a classic Resident Evil collect??ion on PS4 and PS5, well, maybe this is the path r??ight now.

June 13 is the big day in the Americas

Sony has narrowed down the launch timeline of its new multi-tier approach to PlayStation Plus. The revamped subscription service will roll out regionally, and the first lau?nch, for "Asia markets (excluding Japan)," is happening in just over a month on May 23.

Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO Jim Ryan announced the new PS Plus timeline in a bl??????????????????????????og post today, citing Sony's "fantastic progress with ou?r launch efforts":

  • Asia markets (excluding Japan) â€?targeting May 23, 2022
  • Japan â€?targeting June 1, 2022
  • Americas â€?targeting June 13, 2022
  • Europe â€?targeting June 22, 2022

That's all well and good �??but what about the games, especially the fan-favorite legacy PS1/PS2/PSP games that may (or may not) make it in? We'll have to wait for the?? full list.

What are the different tiers again?

A "quick" re??fresher on what's included in th??e three PlayStation Plus tiers:

  • PS Plus Essential â€?$60 per year with two monthly games, discounts, cloud saves, and online multiplayer, aka what we currently have as "PlayStation Plus."
  • PS Plus Extra â€?$100 per year with "up to 400" PS4 and PS5 games.
  • PS Plus Premium â€?$120 per year with "340 additional games" including titles from the PS1, PS2, PSP, and (cloud steaming only) PS3 catalog, as well as PlayStation Now-style cloud streaming and "time-limited game trials."

T?he pricing is going to be too steep for plenty of people, particularly folks who are into Xbox Game Pass or are struggling to find enough value in PlayStation Plus as it is. That said, plenty more of us are waiting to hear about the specific games in the latter two tiers.

Access to hundreds of (hopefully not filler) games in a digital pile doesn't necessarily do much for me �my backlog is big enough! �but seeing certain PlayStation classics lined up together could quickly sway me through brute-forced nostalgia. I mean, hell, I'm subbed to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for N64 access. I'm an easy mark!

Curiously, Syphon Filter could be in the running for PlayStation Plus Premium if a recent rating in Korea is any indication. With around a month to go before the subscrip??tion becomes available to the first players, I'm sure we'll hear concrete details soon.

I miss the PSP and Vita

Want a PSP Switch? Well you can't have one, because it doesn't exist! But this creator's mockup is making it look like a convincing idea.

Crafted from the minds of? Andrea Gallarini and Nicola Pez?zotti and shared on Yanko Design, the concept is deliberately mixing the PSP and the Switch together, pining for the days when the PSP existed, was thriving, and provided competition for Nintendo. It sports an ultra-HD OLED, with a Switch-like design with a DualSense twist. The mockup even has "teardown" pictures, as well as close-up views of the d-pad, analogs, and shoulder buttons: as wel??l as a look at the "PSP" cartridges that can be used insid??e.

It's a pipe dream presented in perfect conditions, but I'm a fan. I truly miss the days when Sony was riding high with the PSP, greenlighting interesting projects and really trying to make their handheld business work. It all came crashing down shortly after the launch of the Vita, when Sony silently pulled the plug and decided to ret??reat from the space altogether.

While the Switch is a great system, it could use competition. Nintendo has no real incentive to continue to innovate when it comes to quality of life upgra??des or UI improvements, and something like this could be ??the jolt we need. In the meantime, we can only just look at it.

PSP will still close this summer

Last month, Sony confirmed a report that it would be closing the online storefront for P?layStation 3, Vita, and PSP. Today, the company announced it would no longer be closing two of those store?s.

Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan said in a statement on the PlayStation Blog that while Sony had recently p?lanned to close the stores this summer, upon further reflection it was clear that it made the wrong decision. The PlayStation Store?? for PS3 and Vita will stay operational, though PSP commerce functionality will still retire on July 2, 2021 as planned.

"When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority o??f our games are playing on," said ??Ryan.

"We see now that many of you are incred??ibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I'm glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations."

This is certainly a positive for people who want to hold onto their old games, or might want to explore what they missed out on at some point in the future. Getting old games backed up was already proving to be a bit of a slog too?, so having two of these storefronts stay online and operational is ra?d. (Sorry for those holding out hope for the PSP, though.)

From login woes to slow downloads to missing buttons, it can be a pain to get your PSP, Vita, and PS3 libraries situated

After hearing the PSP, Vita, and PS3 store shutdown news l??ast week, I was disa??ppointed, but I wasn't as fired up as some. More like all-around bummed and tired. We're really doing this, Sony? Welp, okay.

With the recent clarification that we'll still be able to download our purchases after the store closures (for the time being, anyway), I had planned to procr?astinate on getting my libraries in order. July 2 – the PS3 and PSP store shutdown date &nda??sh; felt far enough away that I didn't need to spring into action.

[Update: It's hard to believe, but Sony has gone back ?on its store shutdown plan. While "PSP commerce functionality will still retire on July 2," the PS3 and Vita stores are staying open for now.]

With that "I'll get around to it later" mentality, on Friday, I began poking around various forums and communities to refresh myself on which digital-only games and cost-effective buys are worth looking into before it's too late. Tomba costs how much o??n disc nowadays? Okay, sure, another PS1 Classic for the list. Next thing I knew, I was in the researching groove and I couldn't help myself. I went a bit nuts.

Mega Man Legends is pricey on disc, so consider getting the digital PS1 Classics version.

On the PSP and Vita front, I have a PlayStation Portable, but it no longer has a functional battery (the bulge got me). And while I never owned a ??PlayStation Vita proper, I did get a PlayStation TV ba?ck when they were super cheap – I just never bothered to do much with the little box after a cursory glance.

My P?S3 is of the non-PS2-disc-playing variety, and I got it late in the cycle, so I never ended up getting many titles for it. Funny enough, most of my PS3 games are just cool, quirky, chill PlayStation Network indies – the exact kind of stuff that folks are now rushing to nab before the stores close in?? 2021.

You don't need to know my whole personal PlayStation history, of course, but I'm briefly mentioning it just as a jumping-off point. After setting up my systems again, I found some games I wasn't expecting – when the heck did I buy Ring of Red? – and I also realized I did??n't own everyth?ing I thought I did.

Patchwork Heroes is a hidden gem of the digital PSP library.

Whether you've sworn off Sony or you're still open to the idea of buying digital copies of older PlayStation games while you're allowed to, either way, I'd urge you to make a decision sooner than later. With the inability to check your "legacy" console libraries in a web browser, the bookkeeping process is a h??uge pain. I say that as someone who, again, doesn't even own all that much digital stuff.

My first wake-up call was when I tried to log into these systems. I started with the PlayStation TV first, and while my account info was still there, my password gave me an error. As it turns out, I needed to authenticate my PS TV and PS3 login using a semi-obscure Sony page to generate a password.

(If you have 2-Step and you're struggling like I was: go to the PlayStation Store, click on your avatar up top, then Account Settings, ??then Security, and finally Device Setup Password. This will hel??p you sign in.)

Once I was logged in, I took stock of my PSP, Vita, and PS3 games and cross-referenced that with th??is very very helpful collection of game recommendation li??sts on ResetEra. Another good one: this list of games you can play on your Vita but only if you purchase them on a PS3 and then transfer them over.

The "add to cart" button is invisible on the PlayStation 3 store, but you can still click it.

If there's a theme to this article, it's that everything involved with preparing for Pl?ayStation's store shutdown is more time-consuming and finicky than it needs to be – by like an order of magnitude.

Case in point, the "add to cart" button (and, as a result, pricing inf??o) is invisible for me on the PS3 st?ore.

I had heard complaints about this recently, but seeing it for myself was wild. As a workaround for the missing button, every time I landed on a game I wanted to buy (a process in and of itse??lf), I had to go down and highlight the "Overview" button, and then press up once and hit X to confirm. I've also read about purchases failing to go through, but I haven't encountered any of those errors. Fingers crossed.

If you're anything like me, you'll want to fill in gaps in your PS1 and PS2 Classics collections on PS3 and Vita. It's less t?han ideal, but in a lot of cases, it's better to manually search for games than rely on the PlayStation Store's inc??omplete lists. For the former, search "PSOne"; for the latter, "PS2." That should bring up a big list of Classics for you to peruse. I'd also take notes as needed so you know which of your games are already installed – the Download List isn't helpful or intuitive. It's still a clunker in 2021.

Overall, though, it's best to rely on comprehensive external lists of titles for your? region of choice and manually search on a game-by-game basis. The PlayStation Store's built-in search is lacking.

Instead of casually browsing the PS3 and Vita stores for Classics, search for "PSOne" or "PS2" so you don't miss anything.

At the risk of rambling more than I need to, there's also the matter of navigating the PlayStation Store and downloading, installing, and patching games in general on these platforms. It's all much slower than I remember, and I didn't have particular?ly fond memories in the first place. Come into this? process expecting to babysit everything – even in the best circumstances, it's going to feel like a project.

I ended up with a dozen more PS1 Classics including Mega Man Legends, Suikoden, and The Legend of Dragoon, as well as the Resident Evils (I'll laugh if Capcom does modern ports later this year for the series' 25th anniversary) and can't-miss titles like Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. When will I ever get around to playing any of this??? That's a topic for an?other day – but I'm gonna try, honest!

I've only done the bare minimum, which is to say I got the games I wanted (and some I probably didn't need), but I haven't backed up anything or put in any additional time to future-proof my digital purchases. Those conversations are happening online, though. If you're invested in your digital library for PSP, Vita, and P??S3, I wouldn't necessarily encourage you to start buying a bunch of old games you may or may not need before Sony pulls the plug on new purchases, but I would start figuring out a plan.

To anyone moving away from the PlayStation ecosystem in light of these shutdowns – or at least reconsidering their stance on digital purchases under Sony – ??I feel you. The brand took a big hit.

Last week, there was a hugely disappointing rumor that Sony would close the PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PlayStation Portable stores this year. The report served as a wake-up call for people who see value in PlayStation's legacy platforms, and it was accurate – Sony confirmed the news this morning.

When do we lose access to the stores and, as a result, the ability to buy legacy games and DLC? These are the dates to remember: July 2 for PS3 and PSP, and August 27 for PlayStation Vita.

The silver lining (though I hesitate to call it that): we will still be able to re-download the games that we own as well as the games that we got through PlayStation Plus. We'll also be able to access our purchased media content and redeem game and PS Plus vouchers even after the stores ar?e closed. That said, once the dates come and go, we won't be able to redeem PSN wallet vouchers on the old systems.

For many people, even just having download access is crucial. You'll be able to do it using the Download List on PS3, Vita, and PSP. The race is now ?on to get our libraries situated before it's too late.

It's a shame Sony put an end to the workaround that let folks use the "old" PlayStation Store in a web browser. Actually finding and buying content on the old consoles is an unwieldy mess in 2021.?? As it stands, this is going to be an all-out scramble even for people who know which g??ames they're missing.

Long-term access to digital and even physical video games is one of those concerns that might not necessarily matter day-to-day for the average person, but without intervention – without ongoing preservation efforts – it's likely going to sneak up on a lot of people. What?? happens when a digital storefront gets taken down? In the case of PlayStation, we might find out sooner than expected.

According to a report from TheGamer, the PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Vita, and ??PlayStation 3 stores are going to shut down in 2021. In the aftermath of such a move, people would no longer be able to buy digital copies of PSP, Vita, and PS3 game?s and content – they'd be inaccessible to new players.

It's not official yet – TheGamer's source believes Sony will make an announcement by the end of this month – but the closure dates are expected to be July 2 (PSP and PS3) and August 27 (Vita).

[Update: Sony confirmed the store closure dates. You'll still be able to re-??download any games you own after the shutdown periods, but new purchases will be prohibited. The countdown has started??.]

That's so soon! To some extent, it's understandable for support to eventually fade away (or at least ?be diminished), but I don't feel like we're anywhere ne?ar ready for that day to come for these platforms.

The current web-based version of the PlayStation Store doesn't officially support the sale of PSP, Vita, or PS3 games, meaning if you want to buy legacy titles, you need to do so using your original systems. That said, there's still a workaround to access the "old" PlayStation Store in a browser right here.

On a related note, there's a well-researched Reddit post circulating again today that recaps a bunch of notable PlayStation 3 exclusives that would be harshly impacted by exactly this kind of store closure. Do you know how I'm always going on about Tokyo Jungle any chance I can get? It's on the list. Many fantastic digital-?only PS3 games have been ported to PS4,?? but many more of them never were.

It's unclear if users would still be able to re-download digital PSP, Vita, and PS3 games they own once the stores are closed, but I'd sure hope so at the bare minimum. Either way, I can't see any long-term path forward that doesn't rely on hackers, tinkerers, and ??preservationists who care about this stuff. It's far more complicated than just retaining games, too – think about DLC, post-launch patches, and rights.

This is an uphill battle even with all hands on deck. We've got a lot of those ?looming, don't we?

To buy legacy games, you'll need to break out your old systems

Sony is about to make a frustrating change to the PlayStation Store that's going to hit desktop and mobile users the hardest. Soon, it will no longer be possible to buy PS3, PSP, or Vita games (or their DLC) from the PlayStation Store if you're brow?sing on a web browser or mobile device. That restricted access also goes for a??pps, themes, and avatars – and the wishlist feature is being "discontinued" too.

What's?? the deal? Sony is cleaning house for the fast-approaching PlayStati?on 5.

The company sent out an email to PlayStation users yesterday with details about these (previously rumored) PlayStation Store changes and when they will take ?effect. On desktop, the switchover will happen sometime next week. On mobile devices, the removal is happening on October 28, 202??0.

Under the new setup, if you want to buy a PlayStation 3, PSP, or PS Vita game, you'll need to do so on your original system using its less-than-ideal storefront. (One of the big reas??ons why this change is such an annoyance.) If you want to get PS4 apps, themes, or avatars, you'll need to use your PS4.

To be clear, your purchases aren't being revoked – "you will still be able to acc?ess all your previously purchased PS3, PSP, or PS Vita content as before," according to Sony. The issue is ease of access.

As for the web-based wishlist feature going away, I don't?? get it. That's just irritating. If you've got a bunch of potential games stockpiled for a rainy day, it's time to take notes and plan accordingly.

It's almost like I felt a wave of collective "oh nos" this mornin??g as everyone on the internet rushed to check their PSPs.

As pointed out by IT Media, cases of PSP owners reporting that their cases are bursting open due to battery expansion has been surging these past few weeks. I went and checked mine right away (a slim and a regular): you'll note the 3.6v 1200mAh battery on the former and the 3.6v 1800mAh on the latter (which is a snug fit). Take a gander at the pictures linked in the previous passage in case you need help locating your battery. Here is? a picture of a battery gone horribly wrong.

Now, this is not out of sorts for lithium-based batteries. I've experienced this before with legacy phones and wireless headsets. But it's a good reminder nonetheless to check your stash and make sure everything is good to go. Sony has provided a statement to IT Media, noting that people should "refrain from using [the system] when the battery has experienced swelling," and to not game with the battery cover off. Ensure that you dispose of it properly.

Moon Holy Grail War... Moon Holy Grail War never changes

10 years on from its original launch on PlayStation Portable, Type-Moon Studio has announced that it is developing a remake of anime RPG Fate/EXTRA for "current generation platforms."

Fate/EXTRA Record will cast players back to a parallel dimension, itself inspired by the 2004 visual novel Fate/Stay Night. The story follows protagonist Hakuno Kishinami as they wake up in an unknown world and are thrust straight into the Moon Holy Grail War - a battle for control of the "Holy Grail," an item of great importance and immense power, but remains shrouded ??in mystery.


In a "Fate/EXTRA Series 10th Anniversary Live Stream" event held just this morning, Type-Moon Studio director Kazuya Niinou revealed various tidbits about the remake (as translated by Gematsu) which will include male and female voice options, new monsters and dungeons, and a brand new battle system which replaces the old Rock, Paper, Scissors element with a modern deck-building a??pproach.

Neither a release window nor specific platforms were announced, but Niinou noted that he wanted the Fate/EXTRA Record to reach as wide an audience as possible. Given that the remake is an anniversary affair for the current gen, this speculatively points to a release happening sooner rather than later. You can check out the Japanese live stream below, which features nine minutes of gameplay around the 39:00 mark.

A blast from 2008

I haven't thought about Patapon in a while.

Not becaus?e of the quality of the series, mind! It's just that digging up my PSP to get a few rounds in can be a chore, especially when my Vita and 3DS are pre-loaded with a ton of portable classics out of the gate. Well, it's going to be a lot easier to get back into the sequel this week.

As was previously hinted, Patapon 2 will arrive on the PS4 this very week on January 30. For the uninitiated, Patapon is a lovely little rhythm series that allows players to take control of a cute and deadly army as they march across levels and take down enemies. It was pretty much universally hailed as o??ne of the leading portable rhythm games at the time, and still hol?ds up rather well.

The first Patapon hit PS4 in August of 2017, so you ha??ve that to look forward to if you're coming in blind.

'POWERFUL'

Power Stone is one of my favorite franchises of all time. It cemented my love of brawlers forevermore, and the second entry in particular is one of my most-played games to date. It also had some pretty legendary talents behind it, like Hideaki Itsuno (of Devil May Cry fame), as well as Takeshi Tezuka, who helped make the series happen in the first place. The Guardian caught up with both of them, drawing out some interesting development facts and the sentim?ent that they'd like to see the series live on one day.

Istuno says that he's mostly responsible for the unique 19th century setting, as he wanted to push the "romance" aspect of the period, with influences from Indiana Jones to Jackie Chan. You can see the former very clearly in the sequel with the whole "giant boulder" motif of the Tomb Area stage.

Itsuno also recalls how he used skills he picked up from developing Rival Schools (among other fighters) to really fine-tune the mechanics, but he also shared the same school of thought of Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai, in that he wanted it to appeal to everyone (mission accomplished). He did this with a large focus on non game-breaking items and a lack of input-specific attacks, adding two layers of accessibility?? for newcomers.

Tezuka also just comes right out and says that he'd love to see the series on modern platforms, using the ever-popular adage "it would be a great fit on Switch." What are the odds of that happening? Well Itsuno himself waxes nostalgia for series he's worked on every few years or so, and already wants to try to get a new Rival Schools off the ground: this is on top of him resurrecting the Devil May Cry series once again with DMC5. Also, the last time we saw a proper Power Stone entry was in PSP form in 2006, so it's ?not like this is a hot property on?? Capcom's radar.

Still, I believe. Even a remaster of the PSP collection (1+2) on Switch would be a treat: seeing a new generation grab hold of this series would be something. For all my Power Stone friends out there: who was your main? I have to go with my man Ryoma (who basically had the Silver Samurai as his Power Stone-boosted alter ego).

A remake of a remake

Square Enix is developing a remake of the original Star Ocean for PS4 and Switch. Titled Star Ocean: First Departure R, not much is known about this particular reimagining other than the fact that it's coming to modern platforms. The original Star Ocean released for SNES in 1996 and First Departure came out on PSP in 2007. This is, presumably, yet a?nother remake of that original title. Have we reached remake inception?

Seeing as how First Departure was followed up by a remake of the second Star Ocean titled Second Evolution, it only makes sense that Square Enix will succeed this remake-remake with another remake-remake. While I'd rather see new entries in a long-running series over constant retreading, it's not like the last Star Ocean game was all that well received. Maybe going back? to the original will help refresh the team at t??ri-Ace so they can figure out what made this series so special to begin with.

RIP

In March of 2019, Sony decreed that Vita carts and most Vita models would no longer be produced, marking the death of the system in an official capacity. While the PSP and the PS3 had their time in the su?n, their number is nearly up as well: at least as far as Sony is concerned.

Earlier today Sony of Japan revealed that they would no longer be supporting repairs for the PSP-3000 or PS3 models. The reason for the? former? Sony says "repair parts are no longer in stock," and requests that folks "ask [them] early" if they need their PSP repaired. That's wild! The PSP has been a legacy system for a while but now you'll need to hunt down third-party services if you live in Japan.

It had a good run though. The PSP was released in 2004 in Japan and lasted all the way through December of 2014 in Europe. By comparison the Vit?a was released at the tail-end of 2011 and was taken behind the barn in early 2019. The PS3 on the other hand has a lot more to celebrate. It lasted from November of 2006 all the way through May of 2017 in Japan (nearly the same as the PS1's just over 11-year run).

That's one of the longest runs of all time for an?? active console, though almost nothing can touch the 2000-2013 run of the PS2. Can you tell I love console stats?

The Ikari Warriors are along for the ride

SNK has announced that run 'n' gun shooter sequel Metal Slug XX is now available on PC via the Steam platform. This title is one in a long line of releases for the classic arcade s?eries, which features a small group of brazen mercenaries laying waste to armies of soldiers, zombies and even extra-terrestrial beings.

Metal Slug XX is a re-release of the 2009 Sony PSP title, which itself is a remake of Metal Slug 7, the first game in the series not to see an arcade release. It features all of the chaotic and explosive action expected from the franchis?e, along with new rideable death-bringers such as the Slug Truck, Slug Armor and the Slug Gigant.

Joining playable regulars Marco, Eri, Fio and Tarma are The Ikari Warriors, crossover guests from SNK's own King of Fighters series. Ralf and Clark are present and correct, as is Best Fighting Game Girl Leona Heidern, who is no longer a DLC character. Leona can utilise her class?ic "Moon Slasher" attack to take out enemies and block incoming fire.

I always feel like, somebody's watching me

Recently, the word on the street was that Level 5 were planning a "revival" of sorts for a cancelled game. Well, the developer has confirmed via Famitsu that said title is cancelled Sony PSP release Ushiro, which is no??w expected to transition to Nintend??o Switch instead.

Ushiro is a turn-based RPG which features a young protagonist interacting with ghosts in real-world Japanese locations, such as Tokyo's Shibuya district. Despite receiving write ups, trailers and gameplay footage, the supposed PSP title never s??aw the light of day.

However, according to Famitsu's interview with Level 5 President Akihiro Hino, Ushiro is back on the books and will be coming to Nintendo Switch instead, although Hino does go on to admit that development is still in its very early stages. In a surprising bit of news, Marvelous! has announced that the 2016 PS Vita brawler, Uppers, will be localised in the west for PS4 and PC -? though oddly not on the PS Vita itself.

Produced by Kenichiro Takaki of Senran Kagura fame, Uppers is a shameless 3D smack-fest that sees childhood friends Ranma and Mitsuru arrive on the treacherous island of Last Resort, where the engage ??in a perpetual fig?ht with an en masse gang of troublemakers. As the game progresses, players unlock more characters, as well as a catalogue of customisation options, so you can stay stylish whilst you're snapping kneecaps.

As you'd expect, coming from the Senran Kagura producer, fanservice is in full-effect, with a screaming gaggle of girls literally swooning at how macho our protagonists are, encouraging them in battle in ways too perverse for this time o' the morning. Speaking of Senran Kagura, Uppers will include a guest charac??ter in the form of that series' Best Girl, the take-no-shit gang b??oss, Daidouji.
