Banjo-Tooie is the critically acclaimed sequel to Banjo-Kazooie, and most people regard them as some of the best 3D collect-a-thon platformers in the Nintendo 64, a console where the genre thrived more than ever. After many years, fans o?f this classic can re-experience it on their Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo recently posted a trailer that confirms the addition of Banjo-Tooie to the Nintendo 64 catalog of its Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service next week, on October 25. This was long overdue, because Banjo-Kazooie has been available on the service since 2022.

However, the most interesting aspect of this new version of Banjo-Tooie is the addition of widescreen mode, something that is not quite common on Nintendo Switch Online releases. This not only makes the game look great, but it most likely means that Microsoft decided to use the version of the game that it's also available in the 2015 collection, Rare Replay.

Fans are quite excited about Banjo-Tooie's addition to the Nintendo Switch Online service, not only because of the high quality of this fun platforming adventure but also because of the significance this game and its predecessor had for the Nintendo ??64. The bear and bird duo starred in two of the best titles in the system, not to mention that they solidified the close relationship between their developer, Rare, and their publisher, Nintendo.

However, as most fans already know, Microsoft bought Rare in 2002, which gave the rights to the Banjo-Kazooie IP to one of Nintendo's biggest competitors. After a long absence, the bear and bird duo finally returned to the Nintendo family in 2019, when the company added both of them to Super Smash Bros Ultimate as DLC fighters. This marked the beginning of a fresh new amicable relationship between Microsoft and Nintendo, which led to the inclusion of Banjo-Kazooie and other classic Nintendo 64 games by Rare on Nintendo Switch Online and culminated with this new port of Banjo-Tooie. Nevertheless, fans are still hoping that both companies will continue adding some of the studio's other titles to the service in the near future, like Conker's Bad Fur Day or Donkey Kong 64.

Last week, Microsoft confirmed it would bring more first-party titles to other platforms. There was plenty of speculation as to what those games would be, but after various an?nouncements today, the roster has been set.

During today's Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, Nintendo fired off the first confirmation that Grounded would be heading to the Nintendo Switch in April and Pentiment would arrive February 22. Then, Hi-Fi Rush for PS5 leaked a little early.

Now, Xbox has confirmed all four games: Grounded, Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves.

//twitter.com/XboxWire/status/1760364075228303617

The first to roll out will be Pentiment, and it's coming quite soon! Obsidian Entertainment's "superb" RPG is coming digitally to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Swit??ch on February 2??????????????????????????2.

Following Pentiment, Hi-Fi Rush is coming to coming to PlayStation 5 on March 19. Tango Gameworks' shadow-dropped rhythm brawler is apparently skipping over the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch. The title will be available for preorder over on the PlayStation Store at some point today.

As previously mentioned, Grounded is making its way to the Nintendo Switch on April 16. However, it's also making its way onto the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 as well. Crossplay wi?ll be built in over all platforms, so expect a significant player base boost as we head toward the summer.

Finally, as many predicted, Sea of Thieves sees another system off on the horizon. Rare's still-go?ing-strong live-service pirate sim is coming to PlayStation 5 on April 30. This, too, will feature crossplay so that PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox players can all adventure together.

Microsoft gently reminds us in today's Xbox Wire post that the above four titles join other massive Xbox properties like Minecraft, Overwatch, Call of Duty, and Diablo to go third-party. For whatever reason, some Xbox fans are still balking at this business decision. However, it's pretty clear at this point that this is the direction Microsoft will be considering for its games going forward, though those like Starfield and the upcoming Indiana Jones are staying on Xbox.

As part of today’s Nintendo Direct, the company announced that five titles fr??om former partner Rare’s back catalog are releasing on their Nintendo Switch Online service.

The first couple are for NES: 1990’s Snake, Rattle & Roll, and 1988’s R.C. Pro-Am. For the SNES, we have 1993’s Battletoads in Battlemaniacs and 1995’s Killer Instinct. And on N64 is 1997’s Blast Corps, which requires the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack to?? ??access.

//youtu.be/LoEPANHSaxM?feature=shared

It’s no Rare Replay, but it’sno Rare Replay.

Of the bunch, I’m excited to see Blast Corps on here. It’s a creative title that just smells like early N64. It’s all about demolishing buildings with a plethora of weird vehicles. A truck carrying nuclear devices has lost control and is very slowly moving through populated areas. The only solution, obviously, is to knock down everything in its path. And for bonus points, knock down everything that isn’t in its path, as well.

Snake, Rattle & Roll is fine. R.C. Pro-Am is a bit of an NES staple. Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is not the best nor worst game in the series. Killer Instinct is a pretty big departure from the much f?lashier 1994 arcade r??elease.

Still, it’s a great bunch of games for the service. But it would have been cooler to see Rare Replay go multi-platform.

This buffet of Rare ?titles will hit the NSO cha??nnels today.

Rare's Perfect Dark is a spiritual successor to GoldenEye 007, one ??of the most influential shooters of the Nintendo 64 era. If you've never played the original capers of special agent ?Joanna Dark, you can now check it out on PC.

Although it's an unofficial port, GitHub user fgsfds has made Perfect Dark playable on PC, which not only brings the classic 2000 game bac??k from the dead, but adds extra features. For example, mouselook, widescreen support, FOV, and more have been implemented.

The download page notes the game is "in a mostly functional state." Indeed, a report from DSO Gaming says the port does have som?e bugs, "but not any game-breaking issues." The only thing you may need to consider is that it's only available on 32-bit operating systems?.

When Rare games weren't so rare

Perfect Dark represents a grander time for developer Rare. Hot off the immense success of GoldenEye on the N64,?? the relatively small British studio was the darlings of a bygone Nintendo era.

The team is responsible for some of the most memorable games of the 90s. Setting standards with the release of Donkey Kong Country on the SNES, Rare consistently knocked it out of the park for years to come. Just ask anyone who remembers Banjo-Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, or Killer Instinct.

As for Perfect Dark itself, the series has struggled to make much impact in more modern times. While there is a reboot in development, conflicts mean we ?might not see it for a good few ye?ars.

It's going to need to be 'perfect' at this rate

The age of reboots and remakes is par for the course nowadays. So when a trailer for a Perfect Dark reboot came out in 2020, it seemed like a good time to revisit the N64 FPS. At least, that was the plan, but the project appears to have suffered from? development hell for some time. In fact, it could still be years awa??y from completion.

A recent (and insightful) report from IGN gives the skinny on what's been happening with the reboot of Rare's legendary follow-up to GoldenEye. Beginning life in 2018, The Initiative, a studio set up internally at Microsoft, got the ball rolling on bringing Perfect Dark to the modern gaming world.

However, conflicts rose between the stud??io and Certain Affinity, who came onboard in 2019. This slowed development, even resulting in a flurry of resignation??s. A lack of direction also meant the project (ironically) saw a number of reboots.

[caption id="attachment_388965" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]Perfect Dark N64: Joanna Dark shooting at some enemies. Image via NEPA Scene[/caption]

Things seem to be moving forward at the moment, with Tomb Raider's Crystal Dynamics now helping out. However, the Perfect Dark reboot still seems to be a long wa??y from reaching us. In fact, sources from IG??N's report state that it may not surface for another two or three years.

That puts the release window around 2025 at the earliest. Given that it's bee?n in development sinc?e 2018, that's at least a seven-year cycle. While some games have been in development for longer, the fact that the project restarted a number of times means it will likely arrive long after its original due date.

Hopefully the final product will live up to the hype, especially for those who remember the original Nintendo 64 release. With GoldenEye getting ported to modern systems this year, the opportunity to relive retro games is very much in vogue. The chance to play a remake of Perfect Dark is probably on a lot of people's radars.

Perfect Dark remains slated to launch on X?box Series X|S an??d PC.

But not unplayable by any means

The 1997 FPS GoldenEye 007 is considered one of the best influential shooters of all time, especially when it comes to its local co-op mode (I guess technically it had to be local because online play hadn't been invented yet). I missed out on the golden age of the James Bond title because I wasn't even a year old when it came out, but hearing friends and colleagues recounting the magical months and years that followed its release, I'm somewhat envious of a time before online gamer rage. Now's my chance to live vicariously, though, because Rare announced that GoldenEye 007 is ?available to play on Nintendo Switch and Xbox consoles 26 years after it launched on the Nintendo 64.

While fans are thrilled to be able to return to a childhood favorite, there are a few issues with the port that are hard to ignore. Most obviously, the game only runs at 30 frames per second, which isn't a deal-breaker, but can be an issue for those who are more particular about how their game runs. The lower frame rate is intentional on the developers' part because the port uses the game's original ROM code, and the N64 could only run at 30fps back then anyway. I personally don't mind lower framerates, but for those who do, there are ways to play GoldenEye 007 on the PC at today's industry standard, 60fps.

//twitter.com/CodeMystics?/status/1618895288235?855873

Other bugs or problems include audio issues, incorrect textures/decals, hard-to-read low-res text, and visible seams in the environment of some of the levels. Speaking specifically to the issue with the seams, one of the developers behind the game said through the company's Twitter account that these issues were always present in the base game, but these issues are "just easier to see in HD." The emulation may not make for "perfect" gameplay for long-time fans or at least as perfect as nostalgia goggles can make a game feel that came out on retro consoles but at the very least, the release of GoldenEye 007 on modern consoles is a great step forward for makin??g classic games more accessible for new generations.

Speaking from experience as someone who isn't tech-savvy at all, emulators aren't for everyone. It's pretty cool that now anyone who has Game Pass can instantly get access to a classic that's been tough for the average player to get their hands on over the past couple of decades. Games preservation is important to me, especially considering we've lost a lot of the indus?try's history already, but rereleases like this are certainly a vast improvement for the accessibility of classic ga?mes.

Avast, ye! An update is here!

It always makes me happy to see Sea of Thieves in the news it's one of those games that I think has a great premise and always delivers on the fun, and it's managed to live on despite threats of a shutdown in 2022. The game is not only alive now, but thriving evidenced yet again by announced a new update for 2023 that Rare announced this week. This release will focus on matchmaking improvements, as well as the addition of Pet Rocks and a brand new live event called The Secret Wilds. It's always been exciting to be ?a pirate, but now, even more so.

The Secret Wilds event will take over right where the previous PvE event The Rogue's Legacy left off, which explored the backstory of an undead pirate named Captain Briggsy. The event will run from January 18-February 2??, so players will have a few weeks to d??elve further into the mystery.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=XresgzEZaT0

Sea of Thieves is also get?ting a whole host of new cosmetics, including the "Labyrinth Looter" set of outfits, guns, and ship accessories themed around the Greek myth of Theseus and th??e Minotaur. There's also a new emote that has players playing with their very own Pet Rock I guess if you can't have a parrot, a rock is the next best thing.

Arguably the most exciting changes, however, come in the form of improvements to the game's PvP mode, especially when it comes to its matchmaking systems. In an attempt to make queue times shorter, Rare is introducing a system that will pair players with an opponent from the same faction if load times are too long to make sure that players will always be able to get into a game. In addition, Rare is also increasing the number of PvP arenas from six to 50, and the losing crew in a battle will receive more compensation as an effort to make losses less bothersome. Make sure to check out the Sea of Thieves news video for more info!

We've been expecting you, Mr. Bond

During today's Nintendo Direct presentation, the publisher revealed that one of the most popular Nintendo 64 titles of all time, Rare's GoldenEye 007, will be heading to the Nintendo Switch Online service at some point in the near future. Rare would also announce that the same release will be made availabl??e on Xbox platforms via the Xbox Game Pass service.

Many had wondered w??hether the 1998 classic would ever show its face on the Switch, or any modern gaming service, given its tangled mess of licensing d??eals. It seems, however, that Rare, Nintendo, and Xbox have managed to cross the i's and dotted the t's, and the multiplayer classic will soon be available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers and Xbox platforms. Online multiplayer has been confirmed for the Switch release, but the Xbox Game Pass version may be local only.

GoldenEye 007 is "coming soon" to Nintendo Switc?h Online and Xbox Game Pass.

The trailer is out now, the full thing arrives on June 27

In case you've been wondering why there's been some GoldenEye 64 news this year, note that it's the 25th anniversary of the series (amid rumors that it could be coming back in some capacity). That's partially why it's getting a whole GoldenEye 64 documentary!

Directed by documentarian Drew Roller, it'll bring us through the journey of the game "developer in a farmhouse in Warwickshire by a small ragtag team of university graduates, most of whom had never worked on a game before." Based on the trailer, the doc will take a look at how GoldenEye 64 (among several other games), changed the way shooters were perceived on consoles. There's interviews with past developers afoot, as well as tons of classic late '90s footage sprinkled in to take some of us back: or give younger folks a frame of reference for the "Xt??reme/Attitude" period of the industry.

If you're interested, you can find the site for the pr?oduction team here, which is where it'll debut in d??igital format on June 27. Although the digital platforms differ by region, it's currently being sold on iTunes?? [Apple TV] for roughly $9.99 USD, and the film clocks in at one hour and 39 minutes.

It's starting to get to the point where a lot of these retro games are "ancient history," and can be looked at in the same way that old relics of the past (like Pong) were just 20 years ago. I've come to accept it!

[Update: The documentary is out now. The digital platform options now include Prim?e?? Video, Sky, and Google Play in addition to Apple TV.]

Microsoft should have announced this with the Xbox Series X reveal

Banjo-Threeie isn't a real thing yet, but after watching this fan-crafted trailer from Project Dream, I want it to be. Although the project stresses that it "will not be made into a playable game," I would play it today if it was released.

Here's the full pitch from the creators:

"The Adventure Continues! Banjo-Threeie takes place 22 years after the defeat of Gruntilda in Banjo-Tooie.. However, for a third time the old hag is back and stronger than ever.. She has gathered an army bigger than you could imagine.. And she's out for her final revenge! Battle your way through an inspired story exploring fantastical worlds collecting notes & jiggys! Be captivated by magical transformations into different shapes of Banjo & Kazooie to un??lock puzzles and jiggies, as well as fighting an array of terrifying bosses to defeat Grunti??lda and her army for one last time."

Note that the trailer does in fact have its own music track! If you're interested in the "main theme" of the faux game, you can check it out here: it's composed by Dark-Grunt.

We have a serious shortage of AAA mascot platformers in the current era. We do get some third-party efforts, but I could go for a new entry in a series like this. It's beloved enough, and relevant enough with its enduring legacy, plus it's bolstered by a fairly recent Smash Bros. appearance. Games like A Hat in Time have also shown ?publishers that the audience is there still.

Double Trouble, Double Trouble, Double Double, Trouble Trouble...

Publisher Retro-Bit Gaming has lifted the lid on its recent Battletoads teaser to reveal that it is partnering with several retailers to produce a full NES reprint of Battletoads & Double Dragon.

Released to multiple platforms way back in 1993, the Rare-developed beat-'em-up saw the scaly team of Rash, Pimple, and Zitz team up with Double Dragon heroes Billy and Jimmy Lee ??to thwart another dastardly scheme from the voluptuous Dark Queen. The quintet of heroes jets off toward the ominous spaceship Colossos on a fist-flinging adventure set in the far reaches of the galaxy.

Much like the previous Battletoads releases, Battletoads & Double Dragon features non-stop face-smashing action, as well as a slightly more forgiving difficulty setting. Villains from both series put in an appearance, and the title sports a roster of five distinct characters, loaded for bear with body-breaking strikes, throws, and specials. I mean, it's not Streets of Rage 2, but it was a fun time for NES fans.

Retro-Bit Gaming's new edition of Battletoads & Double Dragon includes a fully-working NES cart in an exclusive transparent jade casing. The cart is housed in a hardcover box and comes with a full-color instruction manual as well as an acrylic stand with which owners can display the cartridge in all of its 8-bit glory. Battletoads & Double Dragon retails for $59.99 USD, not including shipping.

Pre-orders for the new NES cart are now live over at selected North American and European outlets, simply visit the official Retro-Bit Gaming website and follow the path to your retailer of choice. The pre-order window will clo?se on May 22, 2022, so be sure to get your name on the list before this date.

I miss the ice forming in my hair as I enjoy the single-digit temperature around me while Tears for Fears lulls me into ultimate Good Vibes mode. Pic included for posterity?'s sake.

Well I'm back in the desert now, which just goes to show that life is full of changes. Rare's jolly 3D platformer returns on January 20

Ever since Nintendo teased that Banjo-Kazooie was coming to Nintendo Switch in January, I have been counting the days for one of those kinda sorta out-of-nowhere "here's the release date!" tweets. We got exactly that tonight, and the date is set for this Thursday, January 20. Rare's classic Jiggy-collecting adventure is one of my most anticipated Switch Online additions, at least in terms of the confirmed N64 roster. I mean, the music alone!

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWrWuXE6RHw

I know myself well enough to know that I can't just peek around Grunty's Lair and pick up a few Jinjos in Mumbo's Mountain and call it a day. Nah, I'm gonna need to play Banjo-Kazooie until I find every last collectible trinket and face that quiz show, which is still nerve-wracking to this day. So much of this game holds up. And? the best bits especially the layered hub-based exploration and timeless tunes are a one-of-a-kind vibe.

Of course, Banjo-Kazooie isn't getting a direct port that you can go out and buy on the eShop it's arriving on Switch by way of the pricey, annual-only Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription service, which seemingly all of us have many thoughts about, more bad than good. For as much mileage as I'm getting out of it with bangers like Paper Mario, the slow release schedule is needlessly grating. And again, that price.

Then again, I don't need to open that can of worms every time. The famed bird and bear duo is back on a Nintendo platform after way too lon??g. It ??feels strange. Good, but strange.

I know it's going to be hard for fans of 4J Studios' excellent Xbox version to adjust to the less-than-ideal emulation that Nint??endo is using for th??ese Switch Online offerings, but I am pumped to revisit one of my all-time favorite games either way. It's gonna get so cozy.

Bond could be back in action on the Xbox

A leaked set of achievements seem to indicate that classic console FPS Goldeneye 007 could be coming to the Xbox ecosystem. As logged on TrueAchievements, a full set of rewards for a version of Goldeneye 007 has appeared online.

The nabbed list of achievements has 55 tasks to complete for 1,000 gamerscore. These include obvious ones, like completing maps like Dam and Facility on any difficulty. But there are others with more specific requirements, like some for unlocking Paintball Mode and the Golden Gun, or scoring 100 kills in multiplayer matches. My favorite?? is definitely the achievement for playing Slappers Only on Complex.

//twitter.com/Wario64/status/1477108966513467392

Back in 1997 when it first launched, Goldeneye 007 was the hallmark of dorm room splitscreen parties on the Nintendo 64. Its legacy has remained over the years too, even as more re-releases and updated versions have arrived. That includes a Wii version of Goldeneye 007 and Goldeneye 007: Reloaded.

Still, a lot of fans want the original back in its original form. The classic Goldeneye 007 was noticeably absent from the Rare Replay collection, though. And attempts have been made in the past by Rare and Microsoft, though they reportedly ran into complications.

The achievements leaking certainly seem like a surefire smoking Golden Gun for a modern Goldeneye port. And honestly, the time does seem right; my nostalgia for an older era of console shooters has been in overdrive with the launch of Halo Infinite. I was also prone to the occasional splitscreen Slappers Only match myself, and I'm interested to see what Goldeneye i?s like, decades of console FPS development later.

//twitter.com/007/status/1477237155013578758

We'll see in the coming weeks and months of the new year, I imagine, how this all pans out. But with the blue-checkmark James Bond Twitter account hinting at special things to come in celebration of Bond's 60th, Goldeneye 007 sure seems primed to re-emerge.

These Banjo-Kazooie remixes are so playful

I've been listening to new takes on classic Banjo-Kazooie tunes from Grant Kirkhope, and I am beaming. The composer shared 10 new arrangements for the beloved N64 game.

The remix album is called Banjo Kazooie: Re-Jiggyed I hope you didn't get your hopes up with a hastily-read headline! and it's now streaming on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Dreezer. You can soak up the songs in this YouTube playlist, too.

//youtu.be/f0tou94hDqE

?These renditions of Mad Monster Mansion and Rusty Bucket Bay go pretty dang hard, but it's tough to top Kirkhope's chiptunes-ification of Click Clock Wood and the escalating feel-good nature of Spiral Mountain. Gruntilda's Lair is super catchy, as always.

"Re-Jiggyed was supposed to be an 11-track album but I couldn't include one of the tracks because of publishing issues," Kirkhope tweeted. "Maybe I'll find somewhere to put it so you can all hear it." Presumabl?y, he means Clanker's Cavern that's the odd level out.

In a video message on Instagram, Kirkhope thanked fans for listening and admitted it's taken "ages" to get the Banjo Kazooie: Re-Jiggyed album done. "I find it really hard to do it, I don't know why??. Remixing my own stuff was difficult, and trying to think of different things to do with it. I didn't want to do just a straight remix, you know, note for note. I wanted to make it different, or fun, or different styles to appeal to everybody."

"Who knows??, I might do another?? one if I ever get the energy to do it," he said.

Banjo-Kazooie is a top-ten game for me, and that's due to numerous factors the well-tuned stuff-collecting, the exploration in the individual worlds and imaginative hub, the fantastic music, and the vibes. It's such a complete package. No matter how far removed we get from its original Nintendo 64 release, Banjo-Kazooie will always be timeless to me.

I'm excited to reunite with this duo on Nintendo Switch, no matter the cost.

Now bring me that horizon

Sea of Thieves launched its Pirates of the Caribbean-themed crossover A Pirate's Life in late June. And now, just over a month later, Rare has announced just how many s?callywags it brought to the ship.

In a blog post, Sea of Thieves executive producer Joe Neate said that players were sharing reactions, fan art, and stories about exploring the new Tall Tales, and all the excitement from the launch of A Pirate's Life resulted in the game's busiest month ever. In June, Sea of Thieves saw 4.8 milli??on active players setting out for tales and treasure.

"To all of you who’ve recently cast off for the very first time, jumped back in after a break or simply never stepped away from your regular Voyages, thank you from all of us," wrote Neate. "And we hope that Sea of Thieves: A Pirate’s Life (and the surprise of its unveiling!) was everyt??hing ??you could have wanted from a crossover on this scale."

//youtu.be/i8KVJGJQBPU

There are still more updates on the horizon, however. The August update is set to make more improvements, as Rare continues to fine-tune Sea of Thieves across the board. There will also be a Gold & Glory Weekend on Aug. 20 through 23, offering double gold and reputation alongside Seasonal Renown boosts for al?l treasure turned in.

There's also a new set of Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean cosmetics coming to the Pirate Emporium, too, as part of the August update. You can turn your ship into the Cursed Ferryman, get a Davy Jones Curs?ed Costume Set, or get a Condemned Captain Monkey pet. Yes, you too can have a cursed pet accompany you on the high seas, towards plunder and danger alike.

Anecdotally, I saw a lot of friends get back into Sea of Thieves around the time of A Pirate's Life. ?It doesn't hurt that it's free to hop into, either. Maybe I'll give the seafarin??g life another try.

One step closer to flushing out Ultratech

Xbox Head of Gaming Phil Spencer has referenced a desire to get the wheels in motion on a new entry in revitalized fighting franchise, Killer Instinct. Speaking with gaming podcast Dropped Frames (as reported by VGC), the Microsoft executive reference??d the Rare-originated fantasy fighter as one of several Xbox IPs he wants to see return to the forefront of the Xbox brand.

"The response when we redid KI at the launch of Xbox One was fantastic," recalled Spencer. "Matt [Booty, Xbox Game Studios] and I have discussed many times KI and where we would like to go with it and it’s not out of our minds that it might be out of our minds but it’s in our hearts and in our minds that we want to continue to do something with KI [...] It’s about finding the right team and the right opportunity, it is not due to any kind of lack of desire on our part that we’re not doing more with KI because we love the franchise? and the community response."

Debuting in 1994, Killer Instinct was a unique and pretty clunky fighting title, originally developed to showcase the power of Nintendo's then-upcoming hardware Nintendo 64. Unfortunately, the new console would ultimately arrive too late to capitalize on the combo-heavy fighter's fandom, eventually receiving the so-so Killer Instinct Gold in 1996.

In 2013, Killer Instinct returned as an Xbox One exclusive, given a fresh new look and much-improved gameplay courtesy of developer Double Helix Games, all backed by a fantastic score from veteran composer Mick Gordon. Following the purchase of Double Helix by Amazon, Killer Instinct was handed off to Iron Galaxy, who fine-tuned the fighter into an absolu?tely stellar release, adding a slew of fantastic new a??nd returning characters, while developing a highly impressive (if too late) PC port.

I loved 2013's Killer Instinct. Its compelling mechanics, awesome music, creative characters, stunning visuals, and easy-to-learn/hard-to-master gameplay swallowed me hook, line, and sinker. Probably my favorite fighter of the last decade, I had more fun (and more success) with KI on the competitive circuit than I did with any other slugfest releas?ed within the last generation. It goes without sayi?ng that I'm absolutely up for another round. Drop a c-c-c-c-combo breaker into the procrastination, give Iron Galaxy a ring, drop Mick Gordon an email, and let's get back to brawlin'.

You may not finish all five Pirates of the Caribbean-themed Tall Tales, but the first one is worth playing, with or without a crew

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life makes a great first impression, even as someone who's been away from the base game for well over a year and isn't particularly attached to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. But free is free, and I had to see the new crossover story for myself the first chunk, at least. If you're on ?the fence, I recommend doing the same.

First off, it's worth noting that A Pirate's Life could be your first experience with Sea of Thieves period (outside of the tutorial) and you'd be fine. As Chris detailed in his guide, starting the Pirates of the Caribbean questline is pretty simple,? and there's even a main menu listing to spawn you into the world in the precise spot needed to get everything underway. From there, you'll hop in your ship, sail into a portal, and enter a distinct story-driven zone in which you won't need t??o worry about rival players wrecking your fun.

The first Tall Tale, A Pirate's Life, plays out like a walking tour with light puzzle-solving and platforming throu??gh a moody theme park-inspired area. It's so c??????????????????????????ool.

Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life feels like an adventure game take on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride

Whether you've recently been on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride or you've gone on it at some point in your young life (you think), you'll surely recognize narrated snippets ("Dead men tell no tales"), the iconic c??a?tchy music, and even some familiar set decorations.

Rare nailed the atmosphere in every facet, and for folks who haven't spent a lot of time up close with Sea of Thieves, the? studio's craftsmanship he??re will be even more impressive.

Gameplay-wise, the mission gets a bit more interesting when the cave corridors open up into a mini hub. There's a ?chatty skeleton in a suspended cage in the middle of the area, and you're free to poke around for secrets and find a meandering way up?? to rescue him. Once you do, you'll carry the captain's skull around and eventually climb up a barely-still-standing tower to summon the Ferryman's ship. I can't get enough of this visual design.

Exploring Sea of Thieves: A Pirate's Life with a chatty skull in hand

Without oversharing story specifics, once aboard?? the ghostly vessel,?? it won't be much longer before you meet Jack Sparrow and start blasting away at a rival ship.

Again, for new players especially, even if they're going it alone, this is a nice little combat tutorial without it feeling too forced. You have all the supplies you need to load and fire cannons, t??ake out otherworldly foes with your sword or pistol who clamber aboard, and munch on food to heal up. For this sequence, you don't have to worry about steering the ship or protecting Jack, or anything like that. It's a smooth on-ramp. I shook off my rust.

A Pirate's Life too??k me over an hour to complete, and that's just one of five Tall Tales.

Fighting with Jack Sparrow on the Ferryman's ship

I also dug into the second mission, The Sunken Pearl, which feels more like the traditional open-ocean Sea of Thieves experience in that you'll sail out to a conspicuous marker in the sky and need to adjust for ??the changing winds along the way. Once there, you'll then dive down way, way down by following bits of wreckage until you reach the seafloor.

After finding a key item in the sunken Black Pearl, making sure to stay oxygenated every so often using bubble vents, you'll engage in some on-foot puzzling and combat. The second Pirates of the Caribbean Tall Tale doesn't feel quite as tight or directed as the first, but it's still decent, doubly so if you enjoy Sea of Thieves' whole vibe on a lower-profile day.

Will I keep plugging away to finish Jack Spa?rrow's arc? I'm not sure. Maybe wit?h a crew.

The Sunken Pearl in Sea of Thieves

As much as I feel like you can play this stuff alone and have a good time, the feeling was admittedly much stronger in the more linear and finely-tuned first Tall Tale. From the look of things past the second mission, the rest of the Pirates of the Caribbean campaign will be? more enjoyable with at least one other shipmate, if not a full four-person crew.

Don't let that stop you from diving into A Pirate's Life, though even if you only complete the first part, it's worth your time. It's a treat. I may have moved on from the wider Sea of Thieves experience after mostly getting my fill of the game earlier in its lifecycle, but I'm glad I showed up again. I wonder how Rare migh??t try to top this; it won't be easy.

If you've got Xbox Game Pass, queue this up!

Caught in the headlights

Do you remember Everwild, Rare's evocative and spiritual new IP? Well, it seems that the beautiful-looking adventure is still more than a couple of years away, after reports that personnel and directorial changes have pushed Everwild back to 2024, following a project reboot.

According to a report by VGC, development on the title is undergoing a major overhaul. While it seems that Rare is confident in Everwild's stunning art style, the team has struggled t??o nail down the ongoing gameplay loop, while also having fluctuating opinions with studio bosses on the subject of combat. While this sounds like negative news, one positive comes in the form of 30-year Rare veteran Gregg Mayles, who is joining the project as its new creative director, following the departure of Simon Woodroffe in Oc??tober 2020.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWpcUH-tKEU

"Gregg Mayles joined us, late last year as Creative Director, and the team has never been stronger," said executive producer Louise O'Connor in a statement to VGC. "Since showing the world our 'Eternals' trailer, we have been making progress on all aspects of Everwild. [...] The team behind Everwild continue to shape a truly magical experience and remain focused and excited about creat??ing a new game centred around a truly unique, new world."

In recent years, many game studios have gone in hard on titles that have wondrous aesthetics, beautiful fantasy universes, and strong, spiritual, ecological messages. While these development issues are no doubt very unwelcome for the team, both Rare and Mayles have a strong pedigree, and it feels as though Everwild will eventually emerge from the reboot as something quite special and unique, despite these frustrating o?bstacles and setbacks.

During today's Microsoft and Bethesda E3 conference, Xbox Game Studios revealed that its pirate adventure Sea of Thieves will be getting a brand new original story, featuring the characters of Disney's cinematic Pirates of the Caribbean franchise,?? including the head rogue himself, Captain Jack Sparrow.

Incredibly, this brand new content packed full of side-quests and new adventures is already good-to-go and will arrive in Sea of Thieves as soon as June 22, and even more surprisingly, it will be made available for free for all players. Sea of Thieves is available now on Xbox, P?C and Xbox Game Pass platforms.

Based on the comic-book of the same name and developed by Iguana Entertainment, Turok (1997) and Turok 2 (1998) were originally released on Nintendo 64 before later being ported to PC. The remastered editions of the cult first-person shooters are handled by Nigh?tdive Studios and feature all of the stages, weapons, quests and, of course, primeval scaly scaries of the ??two N64 classics, remastered for their return on modern platforms.

Also included is a revitalized version of Turok 2's original multiplayer mode, which offers support for up to 16 players. You can? check out trailers for both titles below. I can't think about Tooty without picturing the "game-over" scene (that played when you exited the game) where she's turned into a monstrous green-skinned version of herself by Gruntilda. As for dear old Bottles, I can't see him without dwelling on his untimely demise in Banjo-Tooie. He had a family!

For me, the duo is the best figure of the group, though I'd like to see Mumbo or Kunglo in? this style.

For England, James?

In an undercover operation worthy of Bond himself, a full playthrough of the canceled Xbox 360 remaster of Rare's GoldenEye 007 has surreptitiously slipped o?nto YouTube, giving fans of the legendary N64 title perhaps their only opportunity to see the lost game in its entirety.

Originally planned for release on the XBLA service in 2008, Microsoft, Rare, and Nintendo somehow aligned the moon and the stars in order to get the remaster developed. However, the James Bond license serves many, many masters, resulting in endless issues that have plagued the franchise for decades. GoldenEye 007 for Xbox was no different and ul?timately required too much plate-spinning in order to get the remaster into the hands of the players.

The two-hour video was uploaded by GoldenEye 007 devotee Graslu00 - a highly prolific modder within the GoldenEye 007 community.?? We see the single-player campaign?? in its entirety, from the Dam-based opening all the way through to the Cradle finale, before we take a quick trip through the well-trodden multiplayer maps. The video is captured directly from an emulator at 4K resolution running at 60 frames-per-second.

For obvious reasons, Graslau00 is declining to reveal their source of the footage, but has stated that this build of GoldenEye 007 for Xbox was initially accessible via Xbox dev kit software PartnerNet. Graslau00 also says that the video is unrelated to any recent GoldenEye 007 leaks and that any poss??ible future "release" of this fabled XBLA build is not on them.

Some 'rough scribbles' from the old days at Rare

Aside from my normal rotation of gaming-adjacent YouTube subs that I keep tabs on a few times a week, lately, my feed has been full of anything but modern video games – hardware mods, console restorations, little-known tidbits about my favorite series, wacky l?ists, and everything in between.

It's entirely on-brand that I'd come across a video from former Rare artist Kev Bayliss covering his original Donkey Kong Country s?ketches – including the iconic Animal Buddies – from? 1993.

These are some of the "original scribbles which were used as a basis for us to model our 3D graphics for Donkey Kong Country," he said. "There's not a lot here, really – it's just a? lot of scribbles – and as I say, they're very crude, but it was all we needed back in the day before we began m??odeling our characters."

"We just needed a couple of sketches so that we could ref?er to them and say 'Yeah, we want a frog,' and then ??we'd probably consult our natural history books or whatever we had on our desks way before the internet, and we'd look at all the finer details."

"If you were to present this as concept art nowadays people?? would just laugh at you," Bayliss added.

I particularly love the scratched-out names that weren't used (Rambi the Rhino is presented here as "Rhidocerus") and the "meaner," more Battletoads-esque variations that were considered. He also showed off a "Slippas" snake enemy that could stun th??e Kongs and an early look at the Kremlings.

As for DK himself, Bayliss said that the character's proportions were meant to "work better as a platformer rather than a villain at the top of the screen," hence the more "box??y" and "compact" redesign.

It's fascinating to see the original fax that "came over from Nintendo" compared to Baylis??s' sketches.

M-pressive

If you had a thousand bottles of beer on your wall, and every day since Sea of Thieves launched, you took a bottle down and passed it around, you would now have zero bottles of beer on the wall. If Vanessa Carlton started walking on the day Sea of Thieves set sail and onl??y walked one mile each day, she'd have reached? her destination and she'd see you tonight.

Rare is celebrating the one thousandth day since Sea of Thieves launched on March 20, 2018. It's a game that has maintained a health player base because Microsoft and Rare committed themselves to su??pporting it through a regular cadence of updates and events. Back on launch day, it was a fascinating social game that lacked depth; it was tough to imagine this is a game that'd stick around for years to come. Now it's a model for how live service games should be approached in a lot of regards.

Of course there's more than just the mere mention of Sea of Thieves' longevity. There are commemorative items! Anyone who logs in ??by December 16 will get a special eyepatch that has the Roman numeral "M" on it. People who have been around since day one will get a gold version of the "M" eyepatch. 15 million players can't be wrong.

There's a free tier and a premium Plunder Pass

In an end-of-year video, Rare shared some impressive figures about Sea of Thieves' ongoing growth &nd??ash; over 11 million people played the game in 2020 – and spoke about its shift to a battle pass model.

In 2021, Sea of Thieves is moving away fro??m meaningful updates to the competitive Arena mode, though it will still be supported and playable going forward. In another understandable move, Rare is switching over to a seasonal content schedule for the main Adventure experience. That means there will be a major update every three months or so headlined by "a new experience or way of play." After each season kick-off, the game will get "regular and featured live events" and quality-of-life patches.

Of course, a ??seasonal format wouldn't be complete without a battle pass – "the biggest change to our progression system since launch," according to Rare. In this case, there's a free tier with 100 levels of Pirate Renown progression and a premium Plunder Pass with "un??ique rewards" and exclusive items from the Pirate Emporium. Rare wants players to achieve "tangible" progress in "shorter sessions."

It's hard not to associate passes with FOMO – there are a lot of games trying to get us to do a lot of things in specific time frames – but a progression path beyond the Trading Company gr??ind sounds fine.

Once Season 1 begins in January, Sea of Thieves players w??ill be able to undertake a clue-gathering? "detective" voyage with the Merchant Alliance. Creative director Mike Chapman also says that "big things" are planned for 2021 and they're "inspired" to freshen up the open-sea sandbox experience.

As for the game's?? continual success, Rare pointed to the Steam launch (which brought in a million players "within that first month") and a diverse audience fueled in large part by China and Korea.

The Xbox Series X version of Sea of Thieves will run at 4K and Xbox Series S will stay at 1080p

Sea of Thieves might not be your first order of business on Xbox Series X/S, but the next time you're in the mood for swashbuckling, you'll benefit from s??ome noticeable visual and performance gains.

As confirmed by Rare today, Sea of Thieves will reach ?4K/60FPS on Xbox Series X and 1080p/60FPS on Xbox Series S. As expected?? I'd say so. I think we're bound to see similar results elsewhere.

That said, the real win – the thing I'm most excited about for backward-compatible games, in general – is spending less time waiting to actually start playing. Both consoles will "lead to significantly reduced load times" for Sea of Thieves, according to Rare. The cu??rrent slowness is a widely-held g?ripe.

Backing that claim up with some real-world testing, in its pre-release coverage, The Verge clocked the game's load time as 20 seconds on X??box Series X and 1 minute and 21 seconds on Xbox One X.

"This optimized version of Sea of Thieves will be available to all players with Xbox Game Pass al?ongside the launch of both consoles [on November 10], and via Smart Delivery for existing owners," said Rare.

When this game f??irst released, I wasn't sure it would still be kicking in 2020. What a turnaround.

Grunty Returns and Mad Monster Mansion

Grant Kirkhope is a legend. We know this. Having worked in the industry for nearly three decades, Kirkhope is responsible for scoring or performing a few of your childhood classics, including Banjo-Kazooie and Perfect Dark. Now??, the master is back to r?evisit the former with a few spooky remixes.

"Just in time for Halloween," Kirkhope has tweeted out a link to his "Grunty Returns" remix, a take on the track from the original game. He also reminded us that he has a similarly themed Mad Monster Mansion remix available, dubbed "Mad Monster Mansion Rides Again." These aren't just one-offs though. Kirkhope ?notes? that there is "more to come."

Exactly when will that happen? Well that's the bad news: it's all pretty vague right now in terms of a timeline. The good news is that they have confirmed on Twitter that they are "going to release a remix album of music from [Banjo Kazooie]," they just aren't sure if they'll "get to it ??all."

Although we don't exactly have a new Banjo game on the horizon (that we know of), the character did get plenty of attention when he was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2019. There's hope! Either way, plent??y of folks like Kirkhope will keep this classic alive.

I called it 'Diddy Kong's Quest' for years

In the...oh I want to say, hundreds of hours I played and replayed Donkey Kong Country 2, I never gave its subtitle a second thought.

"Diddy Kong's Quest." Yeah, that sounds right. Perfect actually. No one corrected me. Not my cousin that was visiting from out of state, during our eight-hour session with the game. None of my friends or family members, either. Years ?later I would come to recognize that it was "Diddy's Kong Quest," a clear play-on-words for "Diddy's Conquest," given that he was the new star of the sequel.

Our own Jordan Devore and I periodically muse on how amazing Donkey Kong Country is and still, to this day, joke about how this tripped us up at one point in our lives. So why am I bringing this up decades later? Well, Nintendo just released the game on Switch,?? ??and they had a fun little time tweeting about the aforementioned phenomenon.

At this point, the correct title has safely entered "Sinbad ?Genie Movie" and "Berenstain Bears" territory. I doubt many people are going to die on that hill anymore: knowingly pronouncing it incorrectly. But it's fun to see N?intendo poke fun at it, years later, now that we know the truth.

Missed opportunity

I wasted 92 seconds watching this animated interview, convinced that Zitz, Pimple, and Rash were gonna beat the living hell out of Xbox's Major Nelson. Through straight-faced questions (a missed opportunity to get weirder&?nbsp;with it), Major Nelson asks them if their game is good.

I will spare you the suspense and tell you that Major Nelson does not get his ass kicked. Pimple does not bodyslam him for wondering what kind of game Battletoads is. Rash doesn't huge-foot kick him through the screen for the sheer auda??city of asking whether they're worried about the competition from other now-revived franchises.

You, however, may be curious as to what kind of game Battletoads ended up as. It's not a straight beat-em-up like you may think. It's a bizarre collection of mini-games and brawler segments, almost like a bunch of non sequiturs stitched together. It's unexpected but it turned out fine! Check out Chris' review for some insight as to the new Battletoads, or just go?? pick it up as a part of Xbox Game Pass.
