Back into the breach

I generally approach matters of shooting digital Nazis in the face with avid gusto. However, fate conspired to delay my spree through Sniper Elite 5. A storm rip??ped through my neighborhood and thoroughly savaged the power grid. The electricity is still down, and I’m writing from a hidden bunker in a remote location. Be thankful, Fritz. You’ve been spared a few more da?ys to tighten your helmet strap.

In the meantime, I c??an give you the rundown of what I have played in the dim light of my underground lair. I doubt any of it will be very surprising.

You’re ?once again dropped into the boots of Karl Fairburne, OSS guy and sniper-extraordinaire. This time, Karl’s vacationing in France in advance of the Normandy invasion. When his ride home is sunk, Karl links up with the French Resistance and decides to lend his scopineye to their cause.

I’m only a short way into the campaign, and I can tell you that it’s probably, once again, about a Nazi secret project that got gloss??ed over in?? the history books. I’m hoping UFOs.

Along the way, you need to soften up Nazi targets and repatriate treasure, among other objectives. If this sounds like a re-tread of previous Sniper Elite games, yes, I very much?? get that feeling too. The landscape and architecture are different, but the song re??mains the same.

[embed]//youtu.be/DS8Ef3dHyQw[/embed]

As before, you select your loadout, drop into an environment, and proceed to shoot Nazis in the face. The biggest new feature that comes to mind is the Axis invasion mode. It’s a little bit of Dark Souls where some jerk is allow?ed to come into your game and slip on a pair of jackboot?s. Their goal is just to try and kill you, which nets them some rewards.

Returning is improved co-op and survival modes?. Unfortunately, th??ere’s no split-screen. Bummer.

When it comes to new things for single-player, I’m drawing a complete blank. That’s not to say the game hasn’t been upgraded in ways, they just haven’t in a way that significantly alters gameplay. It’s almost so similar to previous experiences in the series going way back to Sniper Elite V2 tha?t I’m distressed. I’ve been shooting Nazis in the face since about the time that we finally moved away from hitscan. It’s still fun, but isn’t there something ??we can do to make it fresh?

Sniper Elite 5 Scenery

It probably wouldn’t feel so bad if the story didn’t feel just as routine like everything else. Again, the Nazi superweapon plot is stale. Karl Fairburne wasn’t an interesting character to start off with, and that hasn’t changed. The characters flanking him aren’t any archetypes we haven’t really seen before either. You can get a lot more creative with World War II historical fiction without even thinking that far past f?ormulaic creations. You can do more with the characters without straying too far into fantasy. Fairburne is boring. He isn’t attached to the game’s name, so why are we still playing as him? He isn’t Sam Fischer, he isn’t even B.J. Blazkowicz. We can do better.

I don’t know where to go from here. The environments look nice, the stealth is as satisfying as ever. When your stealth is blown, it’s still a bit of a pill to throw down. Leading up to release, it sounded like Rebellion was going to? reach further to accommodate people who prefer the assault approach. However, unless I had a lot of reach to w?ork with, I never found myself very capable of fighting.

I guess this is where we point out that it’s Sniper Elite 5?? and that expecting anything more balls out than removing Fritzchildhood memories from 300 meters isn’t really in the game’s scope, but I feel it’s important to point out.

Nazi Kraken

To be fair to Sniper Elite 5, I still have a ways to go before I bump up against its credits screen. It’s also possible that its multiplayer is a riot. It wouldn’t be the first time that a game changed my mind about it midway through. However, as ?it stands, I’m not entirely sold. I’m not telling you to avoid it entirely, just that you should keep your expectations in check. We’ll see what I have to ?say when I crawl out of my bunker for the final review.

Supervillain seizes East Coast

The evil genius archetype is one that fascinates me. It’s not that outlandish that an eccentric megalomaniac could gather a group of underlings and launch a campaign against the world, but I ca??n’t convince a courier to leave a package at my doorstep, let alone a legion of faceless goons to lay down their lives for me. I also don’t know what I’d do ??with the world if I ruled it. Enact permanent daylight savings and mandatory nap times?

Forget that, though; ??what would I make my minions wear? What humiliating nickname would I give my most loyal henchman? How would I mock secret agents? I’d probably invite them to tea and just repeat everything they say.

Back in 2004, Evil Genius provided me the chance to live my dream. Kind of. I really enjoyed the game, but it definitely had its problems. Nonetheless, Rebellion has seized the reins and has breathed new life into the property with Evil Genius 2: World Domination. Thei?r approach to a sequel seems to be a complete do-over. The result is another game that may not be for everyone but certainly tightened the screws on the old d?oomsday device.

Evil Genius 2: World Domination

Evil Genius 2: World Domination(PC)
Developer: Rebellion Developments
Publisher: Rebellion Developments
Released: March 30th, 2021
MSRP: $39.99

Evil Genius 2 casts you as one of four masterminds. There’s Maximillion, your typical Ernst Stavro Blofeld kind of dude; Red Ivan, a military dictator sort of b?oss; Zalika, an aloof, science-minded mad genius; and Emma, who looks like she has a closet full of clothes made out of the hides of children's pets. Each o??ne comes equipped with their own twist on the campaign and a unique doomsday device. You also get to pick from one of three deserted islands, which becomes your soul real estate for the game. No switching up halfway through this time.

The plot is much the same as the first one: you’re evil and you’ve got a bone to pick with the world. There is some indication that this takes place after the first game, so I guess your old well of evil dried up and the world got back to business. If at first you don’t succeed/p>

The formula is somewhat th?e same. It’s largely a management game where you build your base,?? run human resources for your minions, and enact schemes on the world stage.

The base building is key to your plans. The forces of justice will come knocking to ask you to stop being so bad, and a well-maintained base is necessary to keep them at bay. Evil Genius 2 diverges a bit in focus from the first game. With the original, good base building meant keeping up a front: build your innocuous rooms towards the entrance and your important stuff in?? the back where they can’t get to them. For bonus points, build a hotel so invaders get bored and decide to leave.

Here, the cover operation is less important. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still an advantage to building your good stuff in more secure areas - and the casino front is good?? for repelling bog standard investigators - but some enemies can’t be distracted, aren’t on a timer, or just use the back door.

This means you’ll be relying more on placing traps and making sure your henchmen and minions can react to intruders in the most efficient way ??possible. Screw it up and your hallways will be littered with body bags. Get it right and they won’t make it across your welcome mat.

The world stage has been completely redesigned. In the first title, you’d move your pawns onto the territory you want to plunder and then just complete missions or wait while they accumulate wealth, but here you will need to take a more active role. It’s still the place where you complete most of your missions a??nd build your wealth, but they’re all done by accomplishing schemes. Schemes are performed by sacrificing a certain number of minions, intel, and cash, which could be viewed as the game’s three primary currencies.

Heat has changed as well. Each territory has its own heat threshold, and all your heat accumulates for whichever of the five factions the territory belongs to. Previously, you’d send out deception minions to hide the presence of your combat minions, but now you have to drain your heat with, what else, ??schemes.

This can make it difficult to monitor your heat levels. This?? gets worse when special agents hit the field and start cranking up the heat on whatever territory they’re in. You also have to be careful when they’re around; if you accomplish a scheme while they’re on the same territory, they’ll show up on your doorstep to cause trouble. Some of them can lay waste to your minions, so it’s important to figure out when to lay low.

It makes the opening of the game far different than the end. You begin as a plucky organization trying to steal as much as possible while remaining invisible. Towards the end, when your tentacles have reached into every crevice, you’ll be free t??o pick opportunities as they come up. On the whole, it’s a worthwhile overhaul.

One of the best improvements is with the side objectives. Throughout the game, while you’re keeping plates spinning both i?n your base and on the world stage, you’re also able to challenge criminal masterminds for a chance to recruit them as henchmen, frustrate special agents to eventually be rid of them entirely, and gather a range of loot that has different benefits on your base.

I??t’s pretty key in keeping things moving and allowing you to run your empire as it suits you. You can’t take out all your enemies and recruit all the henchmen off the hop, but while you’re working on fine tuning your deathray, you can push things along until eventually you're able to apply the coup de grace.

The game does stumble over itself in a few places. The pacing is a bit off, especially when it comes to scientific development. Different advanc?ed minions are unlocked as you proceed through the main objectives, which means tiers of research are locked until you reach that point, and the first recruitment options take a while to present themselves??.

The last chapter of the game is also a bit of a slog. Without getting into spoiler territory, your secondary objectives are removed and the schemes now require the most advanced of advanced minions and lots of intel. This means that you are sometimes left waiting for minions to be trained to the tippy-top and intel to drop into your UI, and there’s no secondary objective to distract you. So you’re just left tenting your f??ingers and watching progress bars fill. Not the best climax.

If there’s one major place that Evil Genius 2 improves over the first title, it’s in the way it makes you feel evil. Your most evil acts in the original seemed to happen after the credits rolled, as the goal was to ??build your doomsday device and that’s it. Here, you get your doomsday device rather early, and much of your time is spent eliminating enemies and causing havoc. The mere fact that you get the option to fire your device whenever you have the fuel available is delightfully satisfying in its own way.

It comes across as a diabolical labor of love. The game is ob??viously made by people who cared for the property, as it conserves everything that was great about the original title while tightening the screws on the old doomsday device. Even without the multiple campaigns, it’s a ridiculously long game. But the fact that I was rarely annoyed or bored, while continuously finding new elements to love, is a testament to how well-executed the sequel is. If the first game wasn’t diabolical enough for you, this one should scratch that evil itch a bit better.

Now begone. While th?e world rebuilds, I must contemplate my nex??t nefarious scheme. Insert maniacal laugh here.

Everybody wants to rule the world

Sometimes it feels like Evil Genius was a pretty recent game. Yeah, recent. 2004. I played it while I was waiting for Half-Life 2 to be released. I was in high school. High school. That was practically yesterday, right?

The original studio that developed it, Elixir Studios, went bust shortly after its release, with rights getting scooped up by Rebellion. This led to a couple of Facebook games because that was the trend at the time and everyone wanted that Farmville money. But Rebellion has always said they were looking into bringing a full-featured sequel into the world. It took a while, but we’re finally here with Evil Genius 2: World Domination, and it’s time to bring the ???world to its knees once more.

Evil Genius 2: World Domination (PC)
Developer: Rebellion Entertainment
Publisher: Rebellion Entertainment
Release: March 30, 2021

If you’ve never heard of or played the original Evil Genius, the premise is simple. Set in the funky 1960s, you play as a bad dude (or dudette) on the path to world dom??ination. You build your evil lair, send your minions out to accomplish nefarious acts, and gradually build your infamy until you’re given the opportunity to assemble a doomsday device.

I feel like the original has aged pretty well ?thanks to its amazing aesthetic and enjoyable gameplay loop, but it could have used some improvements. It was a pretty hands-off game, where you set everything up and then have no control over how things unfold. A lot of the time was spent waiting for things to happen while making su??re the forces of justice don’t find where you hid all the bodies.

Rebellion set a few goals for itself before attempting this sequel, one of which was to individually look at the pain points in the original title an??d address them, and it really shows. While the main focus is still strategic base building, you’re given a lot more options on how you manage your global heat; that is to say, how mad all the forces of justice are at you. You can push riskier missions more frequently to gain greater reward or play it safe and lay low as much as possible to avoid bringing chaos to your front door.

The pacing of the original game was a major problem. Things would grind to a halt as your minions went about researching the ??absolute most useless upgrades, and there was this point at which you vacated the base you?? spent so much time building for a bigger one, and re-establishing yourself is a whole ordeal.

This time around, you pick whatever island you want from a selection, and it’s yours for the entirety of the g??ame. It’s separated into multiple floors, and every?thing is included within the unit, rather than scattered across the island. You also have direct control over what your scientists are developing, which allows you to focus on base upgrades or traps as you see fit.

The doomsday device plays a much bigger role this time around, as well. While in the original Evil Genius, it was essentially your end goal -- build the device and you win -- I’m told in Evil Genius 2, you’ll actually get a chance to use it and exper?iment with it. The preview build didn’t let me get this far, but the team ha?s said that it comes fairly early in the game.

On the topic of traps, I never really got much use of them in the original game. I was more the type ??to strategically build my base so that the forces of justice never fou?nd the suspicious-looking furniture deep within. I’d use social minions to bamboozle them, making them waste their time on my island and leave none the wiser.

The team says that part of their focus was to allow players to approach the game however they see fit. Part of this comes from the strengths and weaknesses of the megalomaniac you pick. Some players of the original set up extremely complicated trap combinations to stop the agents that infilt??rated their base, so there’s one the focuses on research and upgrades. Whereas I enjoyed covertl??y working from the shadows, I’m also catered to.

If you are the type to develop nefarious traps, the team has spent some time making them more accessible. The first game required you to place sensors and link everything up, requiring a bit of trial and error. In Evil Genius 2, every trap is essentially ready out of the box. It’s much less of an ordeal to set up a complex, Rube Goldberg-styled combin?ation.

Largely, Evil Genius 2 will feel familiar to anyone who played the first. The concepts of it are mostly the same, and many of the rooms and minions are more or less unchanged. In many ways, the game feels l??ike a do-over of the ori??ginal title, focusing more on addressing the problems of the original and expanding where it’s needed.

One of the places where things have expanded is with the addition of a sandbox mode. This w??as something the original lacked, and, at that time, it seemed like an oversight. The sandbox mode will allow players to tinker around with the mechanics without worrying about an end goal or having things descend into chaos. It’s a great way to experiment with the new trap system or just take it easy and watch the minions g??o about their life. I’m not judging.

If you’re concerned about whether or not this Evil Genius will take from the Facebook titles, don’t be. Rebellion has stated that a completely different team worked on those titles and Evil Genius 2 is ?intended to be a prope?r successor to the original title.

The team has stated that they do have plans to support the title after its release with DLC. This will include new henchmen, new items for your base, and an additional campaign featuring a new criminal mastermind. The plan, for now, is to build the best possible PC title, but console releases in the future are not r??uled out.

For now, Evil Genius 2: World Domination is slated for release on March 30, 2021, and I personally can’t wai?t to dive back in and get my hands dirty.

[This preview is based o?n a pre-release build of the game provided by the pub?lisher.]

The Glimmer Man

This month, stealth 'n' snipe adventure Sniper Elite 4 will arrive on Switch, marking the series official debut on the Nintendo platform. Developer Rebellion has released a new trailer, giving wannabe shar??pshooters their first decent look at the Switch version in action.

It's referred to as a "gameplay trailer," but aside from the opening 10 seconds is still a little too "quick-cut" to really get a feel for how the Switch will handle the third-person adventure. We do get to see our man in Italy, taking down the Nazi regime one bullet at a time, as expertly demonstrated through Sniper Elite's gloriously gory X-ray kill cam.

The video also espouses some of the features incorporated into the Switch port, including gy??roscopic aiming, HD Rumble support, character customization, and local multiplayer modes for up to four perfect shooters.? Let's hope you don't get me on your squad, decades of coffee have left my hands about as steady as a rock grinder.

Sniper Elite 4 launches November 17 on Nintendo Sw??itch. Pre-ordering via the eShop will bag you a 15% price discount.

One Shot, One Kill

This morning's Nintendo Direct Mini presentation offered a look at Rebellion's Sniper Elite 4, which is bri?nging its stealth-action and pin-point m?arksmanship to Nintendo Switch.

As a highly-skilled sniper stationed in Italy at the height of WWII, players must complete a campaign of vitally important missions of assassination, espionage, and sabotage, bringing down the encroaching Nazi regime one bullet at a time. Tactical planning, smart positioning, and stoic? patience will be key elements to achieving each goal, ultimately demonstrating how one man can carry the worth of an entire army.

British developer Rebellion has announced that its undead Nazi shooter Zombie Army 4: Dead War will receive a further two seasons of DLC content, extending the life, (or is that "af??terlife), of the multiplayer team? title into 2021.

Rebellion announced the content in a new video - which you can check out below. Seasons two and three will bring with them a fresh slew of characters, enemies, weapons and maps, alongside expanded campaign chapters. Previous DLC drops have seen our rag-tag band of heroes venture into darkest Transylvania, and even into forgotten subterranean cities, while on the??ir quest to eradi??cate every trace of the Undead Reich.

There is still some season one content to arrive in the coming weeks, including a zoo-based Horde map and a crossbow pistol pack??. Season two will then follow later in 2020, with season three launching at some point in 2021. Specific details regarding the new content will be revealed closer to release, but the video does contain a sneak peek at some of season two's new locations. There will be a mix of paid and free goodies included in both seasons.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Bury the Undead Reich

Rebellion has released the third and final chapter of Zombie Army 4: Dead War's story expansion Hell Cult. Available to purchase now on all platforms, Deeper Than Hell adds a new story chapter, new weapons, and an all-new difficulty setting f?or hardened zombie-poppers.

Following on from the previous chapter, Blood Count, Deeper Then Hell sees our mob of ragtag heroes travel into a subterranean archaeological dig, where it appears The Reich had been attempting to tap into some great evil from generations past. Not only will players have to contend with armies of rotting Nazis, but it seems that the guardians of the ruins themselves are none-too-pleased with this violent incursion into their resting place. It's been a long and frightening journey, soldier, but the end is i?n sight. Fight on.

Alongside this climatic story chapter, the Deeper Than Hell DLC also includes a new character in the form of French resistance fighter Maria. On the boom-boom front, new sidearm weaponry includes the highly penetrative Luger P08 and the devastating Shotgun Pistol. Yeah, you heard me right. Also included are a selection of "Wrapping Paper" skins for your favourite boomsticks and an all-new "Brutal" difficulty mode, which will no doubt test the mettle of even the most veteran Zombie Army players.

Deeper Than Hell is available to purchase for around $7, or comes included with the Zombie Army 4 season pass. Zombie Army 4: Dead War is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

It's my Hank Scorpio simulator

I'm not going to lie. I've never heard of the game Evil Genius&n??bsp;until I watched the trailer for ??its sequel during the PC Gaming Show. Holy hell, how have I lived without this in my life?

As revealed during last year's PC Gaming Show, Evil Genius 2: World Domination ta??sks players with designing their own nefarious lair as they strive to take over the world. Build traps, hire henchmen, and basically become a '70s Bond villain with equally ridiculous schemes.

Evil Genius 2: World Domination ??????????????????????????;is set for release on PC later this year. You can add it to your Steam Wishl??ist right now.

Don't stay out after dark

Rebellion has released the latest DLC for Zombie Army 4: Dead War. Mission 2: Blood Count, available to purchase on a??ll platforms now, represents the se??cond chapter of the horror shooter's ongoing "Hell Cult" story campaign.

Blood Count sees our intrepid heroes travel to Transylvania, where they will investigate the Undead Reich's mysterious plan to burrow beneath an ominous? gothic castle. Quite what lies in the soil, no-one k?nows, but surely anything buried deep in Transylvanian soil can't be too friendly. Players will have to fight their way through armies of zombies, including new bat-hybrid creepers, if they are to uncover the truth and throw a wrench in evil's plans.

Alongside the new story chapter, Blood Count will include a new player character, Werner, a former Nazi officer and master sniper who has turned r??ogue against his scumbag cohorts. Al??so included in the bundle is a powerful new secondary weapon, the Mortar Shotgun, a selection of gory new "Bloodsoaked" skins for your arsenal, and finally a selection of gas masks, ranging from creepy WWI examples to a bizarre kawaii endeavour.

Mission 2: Blood Count is available to purchase for around $7, or comes included with the Zombie Army 4's season pass. Zombie Army 4: Dead War is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Redeem via Steam

Evil Genius, a classic "world dominator simulator" produced by Elixir Studios and published b?y Rebellion, is still beloved by ?the strategy community.

Originally released in 2004, it joined the ranks of a select few strategy titles that put you in command of the bad guy, like Dungeon Keeper did before it, and Overlord?? did several years later. It's an oldie but a goodie, and now it's free??. With a big catch.

Rebellion is offering the game now through their Rebellion ID system. ??All you have to do is head here, get a Rebellion account (which understandably could be a dealbreaker), then link your Steam account. Done. That's not really the catch though: Rebellion isn't telling us when this promo ends to create a sense of FOMO.

Here's the official statement: "Since Rebellion’s SO dastardly, they’re not disclosing when the giveaway will end – so players better grab their free copies of Evil Genius quick to avoid del???icious, delicious heartbreak!" Dastardly is not the word I'd use, but free is free.

If you don't want to worry about all this, or happen to be reading it after you missed the promo, you can find it on Steam for 10 bucks. Evil Genius 2 is coming at some point this year.

Rat-a-Tat-Tat

Rebellion's co-op shooter Zombie Army 4: Dead War is now out of the trenches and ready to do battle on PS4, PC and Xbox One. The developer/publisher released one final trailer to showcase the sequel's chaotic, action-packed universe, where the living stand together to fend off a horde of soldiers that were once almost human.

Up to four players can squad up to take on a seemingly endless march of the undead, ranging from bog-standard zombie grunts and explosive-laden psychopaths to heavily armoured boss characters and even a zombie shark! Dead War contains a full co-op story campaign along with various side-attract??ions, including that st??aple of the co-op shooter: Horde Mode.

Post-release, Rebellion has plans to pepper Dead War with multiple updates, adding new modes, characters, gear, maps and weaponry. Much like World War Z, Dead War looks to be a shamelessly cathartic good time, and a wild way to spend a weekend with some pals. So if you fancy laying waste to the decaying remnants of the Reich, This could be a title worth setti??ng your iron sights on.

Zombie Shark... doo, doo, do-doo, do, doo,

With less than three weeks to go until the launch of creepy alt-history shooter Zombie Army 4: Dead War, developer Rebellion has released a new trailer showcasing the ghoulish, violent warfare that awaits fans of this strange series, a spin-off from the Sniper Elite titles.

The jam-packed trailer showcases many elements of Dead War, including characters, locations, an arsen?al of explosive weaponry, special abilities and, of course, the rotting hordes of the resurrected Reich. The undead will swarm parties of up to four players in intense, co-op gamplay, forcing them to stand their ground with?? immense firepower, environmental traps, and powerful, crowd-clearing elemental abilities.

As players grind their way through Dead War's 100-rank system, they will unlock gear, item modifiers, weapon executions, upgrades, and more. Multiple modes include a full co-op campaign and the obligatory Horde Mode, which promises to test the mettle of even the best players against wave after w?ave of dangerous enemies.

While essentially a mid-tier release, it might not be wise to sleep on Zombie Army 4: Dead War. It looks great, seems very creative in its monster design, and is stacked to the rafters with interesting locations, enemies, and weapons. Much like World War Z before it, Dead Army could prove? ?to be one of the surprise multiplayer experiences of 2020.

A fresh round of Brutal Deluxe, anyone?

British publisher Rebellion has announced that it has acquired the "brand and ??portfolio" of iconic developer Bitmap Brothers.

For you younglings, The Bitmap Brothers was a small but highly-regarded studio who plied their wares in the mid-'90s. Founded in 1987, The Bitmap Brothers adopted an anarchic, punky image - not unlike Devolver Digital today - and would create dystopian games such as Speedball, GODS, The Chaos Engine and Xenon; all great titles that defined Amiga gaming, part??icularly in the UK.

"We're delighted with the addition of The Bitmap Brothers to the ever-growing Rebellion portfolio," said Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley OBE in a press release. "The Bitmap Brothers are renowned for making great games and for bringing gaming into the mainstream with inimitable style. We've known (Bitmap Brothers MD) Mike Montgomery for many years and we're honoured by the faith and trust that he has shown in us by passing on the torch. We'll strive to be vigilant custodians of one of gaming's gr??eat names."

Rebellion hopes to bring some of these classic games to new platforms, and has intentions to create brand new titles within these franchises. Personally, this old boy is more than up for quality sequels of any of the titles tied in with The Bitmap Brothers legacy. The time is right for a fresh shot of that Chaos Engine spirit.

Sniper Elite to be division's first adaptation

British developer Rebellion, known for titles such as Sniper Elite, Strange Brigade and the Zombie Army series, has announced an exciting new board game di?visi??on, Rebellion Unplugged.

Headed up by Duncan Molloy, (formerly of Osprey Games), Rebellion Unplugged will produce tabletop games and other collectible items based on its range of IPs. Several titles are already in pre-production with the first announced game being Sniper Elite: The Board Game. The tabletop take on the stealthy sh?ooter will be unveiled at PAX in December, with a crowdfunding campaign to begin in early 2??020.

"We're absolutely delighted to be launching Rebellion Unplugged," said Rebellion founder Jason Kingsley?? OBE. "My brother Chris and I have been making video?? games for more than 25 years, and our love of the medium has its roots in our childhood love of board games. We've got so many great games and comic book heroes and universes to draw from too, so it's going to be a lot of fun."

Given that Rebellion own the 2000 A.D. trademark, I'd personally live to see games based on strips from that particular property, such as Judge Dredd, Rogue Trooper, or perhaps even A.B.C. Warriors. More games are expected to be revealed next year.

Modern Gorefare

British developer Rebellion has announced a release date for the fourth entry in its grim shooter series Zombie Army. Dead War will be arriv??ing on PS4, PC and Xbox One on February 4, 2020.

This collector's edition is available to pre-order at GAME in the UK, priced at around £90.

This comes in addition to th??e online features, but local wireless play for up to four systems will allow you to experience the co-op campaign (which is a two-player affair) or a smaller-scale version of the competi??tive multiplayer modes without subscribing to Nintendo Switch Online.

Digital pre-orders for Sniper Elite 3 will begin on September 17, 2019. The game will retail f??or $39.99 USD when it comes out.

'We'll take some of their money, thank you very much'

After proclaiming that Rebellion would need a "bloody good reason" to make Zombie Army 4 an Epic Games Store exclusive, it looks like the latest installment of the undead Hitler killer simulator will indeed be an Epic Games Store exclusive. While we were all likely thinking this anyway, the reason for that decision is because of money. According to Rebellion, Epic is "paying through the nose" to get exclusive games on i?ts platform.

At an on-stage interview at the Develop: Brighton conference this week, co-founders Jason and Chris Kingsley spoke about what prompted their stance reversal on making Zombie Army 4 exclusive. Both admitted the previous interview was "embarrassing" to give, but were willing to concede that the choice ultimately came down to the almighty dollar. "Generally I think I would prefer not to do exclusives but I understand Epic's position with it, and quite frankly they are paying through the nose to build their store," Jason stated. "All credit to them, it's fantastic, and we'll ta??ke some of their money, thank you very much."

Jason notes that the exclusivity deal was all part of an "attractive package" that Epic brought to Rebellion. "Sometimes, as an independent developer, you've gotta take your chances," he said. "When something like that is offered... you sort of share the risk and share the reward." What really sold it for Rebellion was how keen Epic seemed to want to support the game. "Obviously they count our new title Zombie Army 4 as a big title, which is great, ?it's a r?eally nice bonus for us."

So while it does suck that Zombie Army 4 will only have a single home on PC, I can't fault Rebellion here. The studio is relatively ??small and creates niche titles that don't do gangbusters. If Epic wants to throw a ton of cash its way, why not take the offer? If nothing else, it will eventually lead to Rebellion creating bigge??r and better games, which is ultimately a win for everyone.

The dead keep rising

I'm not exactly well-versed in the Sniper Elite games, but I am familiar with the Nazi Zombie Army spin-off. Taking a lot of cues from Valve's Left 4 Dead, this diversion from sniping living Na??zi soldiers added a more focused campaign to the proceedings while allowing players to team up and shoot some undead. They were fine enough, but never really showstoppers in their own right.

The two available titles received a dramatic overhaul in Zombie Army Trilogy, which capped off the series nearly four years ago. With that chapter of Sniper Elite closed, it didn't seem likely that a new sequel would be in the works. I suppose now is the time to strike again, as Rebellion announced shortly before E3 that Zombie Army 4 would be taking us back to WWII to fight undead Hi?tler and his regime.

While not a huge evolution over what has previously been available, I do have to admit that Zombie Army 4 is a pretty good time.

Zombie Army 4

Without much in the way of story explanation, I was given the reins of a PC to try out this new slice of Nazi zombie slaying. Much like the previous entries, Zombie Army 4 allows you to select one of four characters that represent different classes. I went with the overall basic, machine-gun-focused guy since I didn't ?want to think too much about anything.

You can customize all manner of items from your clothing, to your guns, and even your perks. I get the feeling that Zombie Army 4 is a little loose on the definition of class since it appears as if you can tweak the various attributes to your liking. My guy, for instance, had a perk that would allow him to revive himself when downed by scoring? a kill. That perk could be applied to whichever character, so it wasn't specific to my generic grunt man.

The various guns are more just playstyle choices than anything too intense. In intense situations, I don't like dealing with bolt-action rifles, so I opted for a semi-automatic one to ease my mind a bit. I also have a penchant for the StG 44, so I took that as my assault rifle for when the hordes got thick. The class screen isn't unlike something you'd find in Call of Duty multiplayer, ju?st that it has a WWII tinge to it.

Zombie Army 4

From there, a cutscene played that set up the story for this new installment. The dialogue and acting weren't bad, but I really wanted to see how everything played more than figure out why I was playing it. After skipping it, I started off in a small encampment that was getting overrun by zombies. Controlling just like any other third-person shooter, Zombie Army 4 felt pretty good. There is a certain heft to your character that makes turning feel slu??ggish, but it also grounds you in the world Rebellion has created.

Your character will have special moves available to them, which is where the class selection really comes into play. My character had a basic shovel bash attack that could take out a whole group if he got surrounded, but it was set to a cooldown to reduce spamming. Along with that, he had a power-up that would add electricity to his shots and even chain across en??emies to thin out groups with ease. These are all mechanics that don't reinvent the wheel, but at least give you a reason to think more tactically in combat. You can set up scenarios where you run to an ammo box but do so to allow zombies to crowd near you. Rip out that special melee and you're good to go.

After fending off a few waves, the game proceeded through some railyards and a small town. It all felt appropriately WWII, looking almost as if it was in Italy. The setting won't wow you with how original it is, but that also isn't the point. Zombie Army 4 is a refinement of what came before and ??a continuation for fans who want another taste of Rebellion's ??unique brand of shooting.

Zombie Army 4

While not as realistic as Sniper Elite, the general act of pointing a gun and shooting it feels weighty in Zombie Army 4. When I first took out my sniper, I missed my shot because I wasn't prepared for how heavy the rifle would feel. You won't need to account for wind, but you also can't expec?t to be zipping around from target to target like nothing. About the only weapon that does allow that is a pistol due to its small size.

It's certainly different from what Valve started all those years ago, if a bit derivative. Still, in the absence of a new Left 4 Dead and with World War Z showing that people are craving this type of experience, Zombie Army 4 is primed to take the zombie market by storm. Zombies have never fully gone out of style and with comparatively few experiences available??, Rebellion could have released anything and gotten away with it.

Thankfully, that isn't the case. As I said, I'm not blown away by what I played, but Zombie Army 4 is pretty good.?? It doesn't revolutionize shooti??ng or zombies, but it gives you what you'd expect and does it with more polish than before. It has full co-op support, includes a full-length campaign, and allows you to shoot zombie Hitler. I'm not sure what else you really need to have a good time.

Silent Scope

I'm not exactly well versed in the world of VR gaming. While I think the technology is cool and all, I feel it has mor?e value in academic?s than gaming. You can certainly make interesting games around the technology, but there hasn't been much that sticks out to me. I like first-person shooters, and there are a ton of first-person VR games, but they are almost always compromised by the limitations of VR headsets, usually playing dramatically slower than what you can play on a standard system.

Having heard nothing about Sniper Elite VR, I wasn't sure what to expect. I figured this would be akin to something like Hitman: Sniper Assassin, where you're perched in one spot and taking shots at targets from far away. While that gameplay does feature a little, imagine my surprise when I discovered that this is a full-on FPS like the rest of the series. No teleporting around, no downgraded arenas to compensate for limited movement, no stationary segments that feel like glorified shooting galleries. Somehow, Sniper Elite VR is a fully featured FPS in VR form.

Sniper Elite VR

The E3 demo I played was a relatively short slice of what the final campaign will be. In a mission that took roughly five minutes to complete, I was tasked with storming a village and clearing it of Nazis before my troop could proceed forward. I'm not sure where this takes place in the Sniper Elite c?anon, but it seems World War II is still raging on and you're all but ready to shoot more Nazi scum.

For t??his specific demo, I was playing the PlayStation VR version of the game using the PSVR Aim controller. Since that device has two joysticks like a regular gamepad, I was allowed the option for free movement and aiming. It works exactly like any other FPS title, so you're able to roam around, sprinting with the left stick while the right stick helps you turn. You could get fully immersed with the VR helmet, but I decided to utilize it more for slight adjustments, instead of full body movement.

It's surprising how intuitive Sniper Elite VR felt, especially since I have? next to no experience with VR ??games. Other than missing some button presses on the completely foreign controller, I was looking through the sniper scope with little practice and picking off guys from far away.

Sniper Elite VR

There are a few concessions given to the player to help acclimatize to this new environment. By holding one of the triggers on the Aim controller, you'll enter a slow-motion state that lets you line-up your shots without fear of taking too much enemy fire. Once you become accustomed to how Sniper Elite VR feels, ??you'll rarely need it. Still, for my first run through the demo, I was making liberal use of this function and picking off foes like a pro.

The other comes in the form of difficulty options. On any setting lower than "Sniper Elite", you don't have to worry about distance or wind direction/intensity. While that sort of destroys the whole point of what Sniper Elite is about, it does at least let you familiarize yourself with the VR mechanics while practicing the art of pointing and shooting. I honestly don't believe you'll need mu??ch practice, though, because the game feel?s very natural.

Once you're closer to foes, you're able to swap weapons to a close range machine gun, but it felt much less accurate. That's probably more because I was afraid to move too muc??h than anything to do with the VR sensor. I had no idea where I was in relation to the TV set, so I really didn't want to punch over the unit and leave with a very expensive broken display. Regardless of my spatial fear, using the machine guns feel just as natural as the sniper ??rifle. You move the iron sights up to your face to aim and the extra depth provided by VR makes judging distance easy to understand..

Sniper Elite VR

It's truly outstanding how well something like a shooter translates to VR. Since everything in the environment now has an appropriate sense of scale and depth, making split-second shots without having to fumble with sometimes complicated control schemes keeps the action moving at a brisk pace. You don't need to remember to hold L2, then tweak your reticle with the right stick, but sim??ply point and shoot as i??f holding a real weapon. You're also easily able to better gauge distance when the world is in 3D, instead of being filtered through a traditional display.

That all came together for me when I ran through "Sniper Elite" difficulty mode. My practice with the easier option had benefited me greatly, as I was now lifting the gun and making shots within seconds. Having to compensate for wind was challenging, but a meter underneath your sc?ope keeps the HUD concise and focused. That clarity is appreciated, especially when the screen in VR is massive.

The only thing I wasn't able to test is how the game would play with standard PlayStation VR controls. A teleport option does exist for people that would prefer it, but you can also opt to use the regular DualShock 4 if you want to retain that free movement. I don't think I could go back to teleporting around, because having that freedom to play like a standard FPS transforms Sniper Elite VR fro?m being a cheap cash-in to a fully featured experience. I truly can't believe how much I enjoyed this, especially since I'm very cynical about the future of VR gaming.

While I'm still not quite sold on getting VR, Sniper Elite VR makes a very compelling case for investing in a unit. I might personally opt for the PC version of the game (which will be coming to both Oculus and Vive), but Sony's Aim c?ontroller really does complete the illusion of being a WWII sniper. Currently, there is no planned release date, but this will be one to keep your eyes on.

Undead legion rises again

[Update: During this morning's PC game presentation at E3, we saw official confirmtion of Zombie Army 4: Dead War, which will launch in 2020. You can check out an awe??some ne?w trailer below. Take that, Zombie Hitler.]

A listing on Amazon's Spanish site may have jumped the gun on an upcoming announcement, seemingly revealing a new sequel in Rebellion's popular Zombie Army franchise. This ties in wit??h Rebellion's own intentio?ns to reveal a "major unannounced title" during E3 next week.

According to the (since removed) listing, Zombie Army 4: Dead War will feature an all-new campaign, which will see up to four players battle the undead Nazi menace across 1946 Europe. Zombie Army 4 will also?? feature "Epic weapons, skills and improvements," along with the largest ??horde mode ever made and the return of the grisly X-ray camera.

The listing originally stated that Zombie Army 4: Dead War will be? releasing on PS4 and Xbox One and will be receiving a collector's edition. No doubt we will be hearing more (officially) about this creepy sequel during E3's PC press event, which is taking place on the morning of June 10.

Roughly two years ago Rebellion announced it was working on Evil Genius 2, a follow-up to their villain simulator from 2004.

Well, now we know what the animation style entails as a group of heroes tries to infiltrate a very Incredibles 1-looking island and take on? a very Blofeld-looking villain. I dig the art! Now I just need to see how i??t plays.

If looks could really kill, then Sniper Elite V2 Remastered might just pu?t everyone in the grave. What else would you expect from a professional?? assassin?

Just a few weeks after announcing a remaster of Sniper Elite V2 (and three other Sniper Elite projects), developer Rebellion has already confirmed that a release is imminent. It'll launch on May 14 on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One for $35. However, Steam users who already own the original can upgrade to the remaster for $10; in case you thought you'd game the system, the original version has already been pulled from Ste??am.

Rebellion promises the ?remaster will have 4K resolution and HDR support. I only mention this so you understand the visual fidelity at which you'll be watching nuts shatter into balldust.
