"Culturally, the company didn’t see a huge opportunity in online"

Former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime has a book to sell, and we're learning all sorts of fascinating info from his time at? Nintendo as a result. This time,? we're learning about the Nintendo online play situation: specifically why the company took forever to actually implement it in earnest.

Speaking to the GeekWire podcast (via Nintendo Life), Reggie elucidated on what a lot of folks assumed over the years regarding Nintendo's slow play with online, with some inside info. Noting that Nintendo has always been interested in "doing things differently," he highlighted the strong historical push for couch co-op, going all the way up to the Wii era with Wii Sports (something else Reggie knows quite a bit about).

Following that strong push, when it became clear that online play was going to become more ubiquitous, Reggie says that Nintendo once again tried to t?hink outside the box:

"In order to do online multiplayer, the company really needed to think about what’s the new type of game, what are the different types of experiences that we’re gonna need to create in order to now excel in that form of play. And candidly, it took the company a while to think that through, to come up with something that they believed would be fundamentally different and add value in a new way. I would argue the company’s core success started with their taking Smash Bros. a key franchise for them taking that onli??ne, which did exceptionally well."

The success of Smash kind of came about organically, and after Splatoon, th?e rest was history. So that's the impetus for the big shift into online play and a paid subscription: but there's also a cultural reason for the slow adoption of the service. ?Reggie explains:

"Culturally, the company didn’t see a huge opportunity in online. It was an area that the Americas and Europe constantly was trying to educate the company in Japan about the value of online play, investing in the online infrastructure which needed to be done in order for the experience to be a positive one. You’re absolutely right that of the three m?ain hardware competitors in the video game space, this is where Microsoft invested so significantly, and it became their competitive advantage it still is today I would argue in terms of their connected gameplay. It was a constant area of push by the Western parts of the company to encourage the development and the inves?tment in the infrastructure, and I’m sure that conversation continues today."

Nintendo has a long road to go in terms of making their online service up to par (even in terms of comparing it to prior generations of competition), but they are still upholding their couch co-op legacy...to a point. I'd love to see full 100% couch co-op for Splatoon's campaign, for instance,?? without strings, on top of online play.

"It didn't deliver"

Penny for your Metroid: Other M thoughts? Well, I'm sure you can spare more than a penny, as people have thoughts on that game, including former president of Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime. The Reggie Metroid: Other M well is deep, as he elaborated recently on the Kinda Funny Gamescast [via Nintendo Everything]. Reggie explained:

"I really thought that that was going to be a defining moment for the Metroid franchise. It was giving much more of a perspective about Samus. I really thought that was going to be a killer moment in the franchise’s history, and it wasn’t. It ?didn’t deliver not the business results, it really didn’t touch the player the way we hoped it would."

He goes on to say that there was a "large group meeting" of the minds, with Iwata and Miyamoto in attendance, on what happened, as a post-mortem of sorts. Describing himself as the "brash American" of the crew, he made the case that the game "took too long to get int??o the meat and potatoes," which is absolutely true. He dinged the "first five hours" as treading water without payoff, and is "sure [he] pissed people off in the room." Reggie says he hopes that his advice impacted future development and to an exten??t, I think it did, though some Nintendo games still have pacing and over-tutorialization issues.

You can't really predict how anything is going to turn out with the general public in the end, even if you really believe in something. While Other M had myriad issues that prevented it from being a true hit, and suffered from a negative word of mouth, I can see where he's coming from. There are things to like about Other M, but the action gets bogged? down by an incredibly polarizing story w??ith unskippable cutscenes on the first run (a cardinal sin in that era).

Once that word of mouth spread, it was over for Other M. But as I've talked about over the years, it had a lot of things to offer, particularly from a mechanical standpoint. I hope that with some story refinements (and skippable cutscenes the f??irst time through!), it sees the light of day again.

It bombed at $250, then saw an uptick with the price cut

How Nintendo at large and how former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime wanted to handle the launch of the 3DS is very different, as the former points out in his new book: Disrupting the Game. If he had it his way, a Reggie 3DS launch would have seen the handheld ship at $199.99, rather than the $249.99 price point Nintendo ended up going with, due to experience with the retail field and knowledge of the current state of the US market. After an "I told y?ou so" moment due to sluggish sales, it was eventually cut to $169.99, and early adopters were given access to the Ambassador Program: something Reggie himself pushed for.

As uncovered by NintendoLife through his book, Reggie talks through the launch of the 3DS in great detail. Initially reminding folks that retail hardware margins are "typically slim" (he cites roughly 4%), he "repeatedly" asked Nintendo to launch the 3DS at $199.99, knowing it would struggle at $249.99. Instead the company took the latter route, and the handheld suffered fo??r a time until Nintendo could turn things around.

Eventually, it became necessary to ?cut the price, at which point Reggie pushed for a loyalty program:

"The entire experience reinforced for me the need to move decisively when face with an issue or an opportuni?ty. With 3DS, we did not let the poor sales performance linger. We moved quickly to create a plan and implemented it with excellence. The episode also reinforced the need to consider ?fully the needs of your best and longest-term customers. By implemented the Ambassador's Program, we kept our strongest fans engaged with Nintendo 3DS even when the price of the hardware was cut dramatically. They remained advocates for the system and used social media to post positive comments about the digital games we provided as rewards for their loyalty."

It was a savvy move, and of course Reggie gets to boast a bit in his business-centric book, which was a win for him at the time, and a win now. It's been fascinating to take a trip down memory lane through the eyes of Reggie with his new book, now that he's no longer with Nintendo. While a lot of these situations are likely a bit more nuanced, it's easy to see why Nintend?o might trip up from time to time through their ??decision-making process, and how certain people inside aim to slowly push them in the right direction.

"[It] was a nonstarter"

In case you missed it, former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime just launched his new book, and there's a bunch of info coming out in regards to his time at the company. As VGC points out, one interest?ing tale involves the fabled Game Boy Micro.

If you missed it in ?2005, the Micro was one of Nintendo's oddball handheld releases that offered up a tiny Game Boy Advance for $99.99. It did not do particularly well, by Nintendo's own admission.

Here's what Reggie ha??d to say on the matter, and how he wishes the company could have sidestepped the whole affair:

“From my perspective, the concept of Game Boy Micro was a nonstarter. The hardware was exceptionally small, Not only were the control buttons difficult for any reasonably sized adult to manipulate, but also the screen was tiny. This ran counter to current consumer electronics trends of making screens larger. But develo??????????????????????????pment of this hardware had continued, and now we were forced to? launch the system. ‘We should have talked about this long ago I told [fellow NOA executives] Don James and Mike Fukuda. ‘We should have all agreed that this product would be a distraction for us in our market and either not introduce it here or have it terminated as a project globally. By working together we could have had a different outcome.'"

And here's how Reggie flipped this into a learning experien?ce:

"The lesson: company leadership needed constant communication on our priorities. As president, my solution was to institute weekly meetings of the executive leadership team to review key priorities and our progress against them./p>

So I completely get, from a business standpoint, why Reggie felt this way about an oddball pet pr?oject.

But at the same time, the Game Boy Micro is part of the reason why I continued to maintain an interest in Nintendo. Sure it? was weird and unwieldy. Sure it's mostly? collector fodder. But the fact that the company was doing strange things like this kept me interested. So while it may not have "met Nintendo's expectations" in the words of Satoru Iwata himself; Nintendo's long string of crazy handhelds helped augment its legacy as a company that was different, for better or worse.

My eyes and ears are ready

A new Reggie ?Fils-A??ime SXSW panel? Don't mind if I do!

The former Nintendo of America president spoke on multiple topics on a SXSW (South by Southwest) panel back in mid-March, and now the entire thing is online via the official SXSW YouTube account.

For those of you familiar with his story and his MO, some ??of this Reggie SXSW panel will be remedial. But he also opens up about several issues that are directly gaming/Nintendo related, including some moments on his mentor and friend: Satoru Iwata. It gets Nintendo-centric pretty quickly actually, just six minutes in.

Reggie talks about how in 2003, "Nintendo was in a tough position," given the p??opularity of the PS2, and how it was "running away with the industry." He says that "all of his advisors" told him not to take the job at Nintendo of America, because of the difficulty of working for a "Japanese parent company," and the "cultural differences" therein; on top of the difficulty of bringing Nintendo out of the GameCube slump. But ultimately, it was meeting Iwata that convinced him to join (a process he says almost cost him the job, as some in the company did not like the audacity of a "brash American" asking to meet Nintendo's president).

He also gets ample time to plug his own book, which is out in May and will be narrated by himself in au?dio form. Much of it will provide new details of his life growing up in the Bronx and the path that led him to where he is today. He notes, in the panel, that the main point of the book is to provide "perspective on the things he's done and the choices he's made."

It's out in May

The Reggie Fils-Aime audio book has a narrator: the Regginato??r. Yep, Reggie will be?? bringing his own book, Disrupting the Game, to life, when it arrives on May 3 of this year.

The news comes via IGN, where Reggie confirmed that the best way to get his point across was to do it himself: "I wanted it to read as if I had written you a detailed letter with key stories and insights that inspire you to pursue your own journey. Narrating the audiobook reinforced that I achieved my objective the book truly is my own story, in my own voice. There are no self-congratulatory segments. Failur??es?? are unvarnished. I wanted the book to be authentichopefully, inspiring. Reading the book aloud brought a smile to my face."

Subtitled "From the Bronx to the Top of Nintendo," it'll tell the tale of his beginnings as a Haitian immigrant into his stay at Nintendo, amid purveying business concepts like "how to stand up for your own ideas," and "creating vibrant v??isions for your team?? and company."

Given his enigmatic history in the gaming sphere, there's a lot of eyeballs on this book, but Reggie is really prepping people early for the fact that it will be business-centric. In other words, it won't entirely be focused on his wacky meme-filled adventures at Nintendo, nor will it be filled with juicy Mi??yamoto anecdotes. That said, he does confirm that there will be a section on going to Kyoto for Iwata's funeral (which he said was ?painful to narrate), as well as the story behind "getting Itawa to agree to the memorable E3 opening line of 'kicking ass, taking names, and making games.'"

Amid a missed opportunity to call the book "My Body is Reggie," a joke I've heard many times since this projec?t was announced, I'm looking forward to it especially given the news ??that he's narrating it himself.

Eight members to leave retailer this summer

Turbulent times continue for GameStop. The gaming retailer has announced that several incumbent members of its board of directors will be stepping down at the ?company's 2021 Annual Meeting, whic??h is set to take place in June.

As reported by GamesIndustry.biz, among the eight directors retiring from their posts on the board are former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime, who took the part-time role with GameStop just over a year ago. Also stepping away from GameStop are fo??rmer PetSmart CEO JK Syman??cyk and former Walmart U.S. CEO Bill Simon, both of whom were brought on-board with Fils-Aime in hopes of improving the retailer's fortunes.

GameStop's fortunes did indeed improve in the short-term, thanks to the release of next-gen platforms PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, which brought a serious boost to the retailer's fourth quarter for the year 2020-2021. In the long-term, however, GameStop had a difficult year, with an overall 21% decline in sales, leading to a loss in the region of $215 million USD. The recent "GameStonks" debacle - which saw online traders purposefully drive up GameStop st?ock cost in order to price out opportunists - no doubt lead to further headaches for the company's accountancy.

GameStop has been living on a relative knife-edge for several years, facing store closures, raising ire with its opening policies in a time of COVID, and struggling to compete with the ever-increasing growth of onl?ine retail. For now, however, the company remains afloat and many stores remain operational. With the new digital generation underway and COVID continuing to increase the pressure on high street stores, this will be a critical year for the retailer.

Right on

Now that Reggie is free from th??e shackles of PR, he's allowed to speak his min?d.

He's remained extremely professional though! It's not like he wants to burn any b??ridges during his fairly active "retirement," but he's continued to give us interesting insights into the industry multiple times a year. This newest E3 advice is one that publishers still have time to heed.

While E3 pretty much has to be digital this year, Reggie tells Gamertag Radio that it "doesn't sound al??l that compelling." He explains that "platform holders need to find a way to digitally enable their?? fans," allowing them to "experience the content," because of how "key" that is for E3 as a whole.

Reggie gives the example of playing The Last of Us Part 3 potentially for the first time together, or "the next Breath of the Wild game," or "the next great game coming from the new amalgamation of all the Xbox studios." And he's absolutely right. In past years, one of my favorite E3 activities, even covering it from home, wa?s the "surprise release." Getting to experience something with everyone at a??ll once, even if you were physically present at E3, was magical. That spark was sorely missing from E3 2020.

As someone?? who covered E3 every day last year, the bombardment of streams was exhausting and generally, unrewarding. It was insane having to sit through some incredibly weak streams just because some executive had an idea that they shou??ld join in on the streaming wagon.

If someone had actually had the original idea to drop a bombshell demo, it likely would have made waves. I get that everyone had to scramble to make E3 come together in just a few scant m??onths because plans suddenly changed, but I hope this year is different. They've had roughly a year to figure out E3 2021.

His body was ready to retire

Reggie Fi??ls-Aimé is legendary. I mean, he ?helped make the Bigfoot Pizza a reality!

But really folks...the bigfoot pizza ruled. But really really, Reggie Fils-Aimé is easily more well-known for his stint a??t Nintendo of America, where he brought a very welcome larger-than-life persona out in the world to give Nintendo the gravitas it needed. According to Reggie, the Switch kind of sealed the deal on his retirement.

As he puts it speaking to Gamertag Radio: "candidly, knowing that it was going to be successful is what helped make my retirem?ent decision easy b??ecause I knew the company was going to be in great shape for at least a few years." Reggie talks about the sheer power of Nintendo when it comes to portable systems, saying that the "hair on the back of [his] neck stood up" when he first saw the Nintendo DS.

Reggie talks about how the Switch went differently than the Wii U, noting: "And I say thi?s because the system was solving for a key player complaint, and that complaint is, I’m having fun, I’m playing my game, and now I need to stop because I got to go to work, or I gotta go to school, and I can’t take my game with me. I can’t continue playing that game. So Switch, with the opportunity to play on that big screen TV, then take it out of the dock? and go play in handheld mode, it met a fundamental consumer desire. That was the triggering moment. There were so many other smart things the company did – the support for Unity and Unreal, which allowed all of the great independent content to come. A number of other key decisions."

It's been fascinating hearing from Reggie during? his retirement: you'd think he actually isn't even retired at all, given how many speaking engagements and podcasts he's appeared on. But whenever he does talk, it's very easy to listen. He's the type of person who always feels like his work is never fi??nished, so having the Switch be a hit could give him the solace he needed to step back and take some time for himself.

'People forget, when the Wii U launched, the performance over that life cycle was so poor'

Now that Reggie Fils-Aimé, is working for himself and no longer with Nintendo, we've gotten a number of frank post-mortem observations from him: it's refreshing! This time Fils-Aimé spoke again on the subject of the Wii U, and how the burned phoenix of its remains allowed Nintendo to achieve an ever greater fee?ling of success with the Switch.

Speaking on the New York Gaming Awards stream, Fils-Aim&eacu??te; recalls the "poor performance" of the Wii U, and how the achievement of the Switch is a "lasting memory" for him. He reminds us that "when the Wii U launched, the performance over that life cycle was so poor," and calls it the "worst-selling platform," outside of the Virtual Boy. He goes on to state that it "underperformed pretty ??radically," something we know due to hard sales figures.

Fils-Aimé says that when "your only business is video games," it's kind of important for your flagship product to soar. So when the Switc?h did what it did, b??oth in terms of concept and cold hard sales, it's something he can "always be proud of." Boldly, he says that the Switch was a "make or break product" for Nintendo, and that it "luckily was a hit."

It's hard imagining a world where the Switch, which did basically everything the opposite of the Wii U (both in terms of marketing and ease of hardware), wasn't a hit, but it would be really interesting to see the state that Nin?tendo?? would be in if it failed.

At least he's kicking up his feet a bit, albeit in Animal Crossing.

While we've missed him in Nintendo Directs (speaking of: we've been missing Nintendo Directs altogether), we'll soon get Reggie's sweet dulcet tones delivered straight to our eardrums. Reggie's starting a podcast! It's a collaborative effort with the New York Videogame Critics Circle, as Reggie's accompanied by journalist Harold Goldberg in the bluntly-titled Talking Games with Reggie and Harold. It's scheduled to be a seven-episode series, and Geoff Keighle?y is the first guest.

It's nice that he isn't disappearing from our lives completely, but the podcast has nobler aims than merely a one-way hotline to Reggie. The podcast is a charitable effort, as it's raising money to provide youths in New York-area homeless shelters with video games. Anyone who's interested in donating can check out the GoFundMe campaign.

Contributing isn't necessary, though. The podcast will be free for everyone. However, donors have some exclusive opportunities such as: Getting extra podcast content from Reggie and guests, participating in a charity auction for rare memorabilia (a given example is a Miyamoto-signed issue of Nintendo Power), and ha??ving the opportunity to ask Reggie a question for ??the show.

There's no word as to when the inaugural episode of Talking Games with Reggie and Harold will be ready. It could drop at any time. J??ust make sure your ears are ready. Full-body exertion probably isn't required this time.

The board is ready

Reggie's coming out of retirement...sort of. Less than a year after stepping down as president of Nintendo of A??merica, Reggie Fils-Aime picked up a part-time gig at GameStop. No, he's not going to be slinging PowerUp Rewards Pr??o subscriptions.

GameStop is overhau??ling its board of directors, and that includes appointing Fils-Aime to the board. On Twitter, Fils-Aime writes "The gaming industry needs a healthy and vibrant GameStop. I look forward to being a port of the GameStop board and helping make this happen."

As we've documented many times, GameStop is in the tough position of watching sales decline and losses pile up. Many have accepted its fate as a failing corporation, far more likely to close its doors?? than to right the ship. GameStop hopes that Fils-Aime's expertise and guidance can help turn things around. He's not a bad candidate, considering all that he helped accomplish at Nintendo.

Fi?ls-Aime won't be alone. He's part of a leadersh??ip refresh at GameStop that also sees Bill Simon and JK Symancyk take up spots on the board of directors. Simon has experience in the retail and food industries, most notably as the president and CEO of Walmart in the early 2010s. Symancyk is the current president and CEO of PetSmart.

'I put a stop to that'

Most people who grew up in the '90s are probably aware of (??or lament) the "Attitude Era" of professional wrestling.

The short of it? The WWE (known as the WWF at that time) revamped their strategy with a more irreverent and edgy approach, and it completely worked...for them. For every successful Attitude Era there's a try-hard Poochie, and Nintendo almost fell into that latter trap. Well it did, for a time.

Speaking to the Present Value Podcast, former Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime reminisced on his time at the company, and noted that he put the kibosh on those sort of efforts. Reggie explains "When I joined Nintendo, there was a sense of almost shame that Nintendo appealed to young consumers, and t??he marketing team at Nintendo of America started doing things with the lo?go – that classic Nintendo logo in an oval – they would put it into graffiti style, or they’d do different things to try and age up the logo, and I put a stop to that because that is not our brand."

Reggie goes on to say that the marketi?ng campaign felt "false," and th?at his philosophy eventually broadened Nintendo's horizons anyway, leading up to the launch of the ubiquitous Wii. Although he doesn't specify an exact time period he does say "when [he] joined Nintendo," which is likely around the backend of 2003, when the echoes of the attitude-laden '90s were still being felt and he was serving as the executive vice president of sales and marketing.

I'd say he succeeded! Most of those ad campaigns? don't age?? well at all, but the core message of Nintendo has been enduring.

'It will happen over the next decade and be something that's really meaningful for players'

We've seen the tepid reaction from the general public when it comes to???? Stadia's recent launch, but many high-ranking industry officials are still banking on cloud gaming. You can now add former NOA president Reggie Fils-Aimé to that list.

Speaking to Fils-Aimé (among others) at The Game Awards, Hollywood Reporter managed to squeeze a few choice quotes out of the man, most notably where the industry is headed and just how hardcore of a Nintendo fan Reggie was before he took on a major role with the company. As it turns out Reggie is a big fan of cloud gaming, and thinks it'll take off in the next 10 years or so: "As the technology evolves to be ??cloud, and as download speeds increase, what it means is you're going to be able to play any game on any device at any time...it will happen over the next decade and be something that's really meaningful for players."

Before you tear the message apart you can really see what he's saying here: as the modern era of gaming continues to blur the lines of PC-versus-console and cross-play proliferates, gaming will become more ubiquitous. Whether that takes the form of cloud gaming or not, we'll see. Although he doesn't elaborate further, he does go on to give us a great little factoid on his passion for his former employers. Reggie says that his first system is the SNES, and re-iterates his love for Zelda: A Link to the Past as well as Super Mario World. But he also reveals that he owned ??"over 80" games for the platform, which is a respectable hoard by any metric.

Turning back time, Reggie would have been roughly 28 years old when the SNES was released and his passion for gaming truly began. He picked a good time! Although the Atari and NES era were great, the SNES felt like the beginning of a new era for storytelling, as JRPG developers really kicked things into high gear for masterpieces like Chrono Trigger and Earthbound.

My Body etc...

We are one day away from the trailer-fest that is The Game Awards, and producer and all-round hype man Geoff Keighley is still dropping news and tidbits in regards to this year's ceremony. This includes the announcements that beloved industry figures Ikumi Nakamura a??nd Reggie Fils-Aimé will be putting in appearances as guest presenters.

Nakamura, formerly of Tango Ghostworks, is a creative director and game artist who won the hearts of the community after her E3 appearance earlier this year. More recently, Nakamura was seen in a video with Hideki Kamiya, where she showed her interest in a new Okami title. On her official Twitter, Nakamura noted that she was coming to The Game Awards sans translator, and wondered whether she should dance, play the violin, or just run reception. I'm sure?? in whatever role Nakamura appears, she'll make a lasting impact on the audience.

Fils-Aimé, who almost needs no introduction, is the former president of Nintendo of America, who practically became a brand in and of himself due to his performances - both on stage and in skits - when promoting Nintendo products. Now retired from the company, Fils-Aimé is a Leader in Residence at his old alma-mater, Cornell University, where he occasionally lectures students on business. On Twitter, he responded to his Game Awards invite with his catchphrase "My body is ready."

CLASSIC REGGIE.

The Game Awards 2019 takes place Thursday, Decem??ber 12 at 17:3?0 PT / 20:30 ET / 01:30 BST.

And his favorite fighters are Zelda and Ridley

Former Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime has been popping up lately due to his work in the lecturing circuit, and once again in a Q&A port?ion (for a marketing seminar) he's being asked Nintendo-relat?ed questions.

This one is a two-fer, courtesy of official video breakouts from the lecture at Cornell University. First up: his favorite game during his tenure at Nintendo (2003-2019)? Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That one wasn't too tough, given that Reggie has sung its praises inside and outside of the organization. But there's a follow-up! As for his favorite Zelda? Link to the Past. My man, same!

The next one is a little more to the point and probably confused every other non-gamer in the room: "what's your main in Smash." Reggie loves to play Zelda he??rself (because her float ability keeps him on the stages) and Ridley. No explanation was gi??ven for that latter answer, but do you really need one?

If you're interested in actual non-gaming related lecturing from Reggie (I definitely am more-so than the infinite meme questions he got), Cornell College of Business has a bunch on their YouTube channel. Here's one to get you started. Watching his ?conviction on screen with these lectures is like sitting through a captivating press conference all over again.

Lucas is out to pasture still

Will Mother 3 ever be localized? Well if the typical rumor-starters are right, it should have been localized every year for the past decade or so. Every single time, without fail, a Mother 3 rumor pops up, whether it's for E3 or literally any Nintendo Direct, and it never happens. W?ell, at least one person doesn't have to deal with it anymore.

During a business and marketing lecture at Cornell University this past week, former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime was asked about Mother 3.&nb??sp;and was put on the spot. But without missing a beat, he replies "all of my answers are out there...look...luckily for me, this is a decision I'm no longer part of" w??ith a smile on his face.

While a marketing lecture probably wasn't the best place to ask ab??out it, this sort of class act behavior from Reggie shows why he was such a radiant and positive force at Nintendo for so many years.

Reggie in Back 2 Skool

Reggie Fils-Aimé may have left the corporate world behind, but "The Regginator" isn't done just yet. In fact, the former Nintendo of America President announced this past weekend that he is returning to his former place of learning, Cornell University in New York, where he will lecture? students as the campus' fi?rst Leader in Residence.

Reggie attended The Cornell University's Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management back in the early '80s, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Economics, and was even the President of the school's Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity chapter. I like to think he got up to Animal House style shenanigans too - and pulled pranks on the crusty old Dean - but that's proba??bly just the movies? talking.

On October 21, Reggie will host his first lecture, where he will "share principles for you to master so you can cultivate your own leadership capability". Given that Fils-Aimé eventually went on to preside over one of the most instantly recognisable brands in the history of business, some of his advice is probably worth taking. You can find out more about the event over at the official Cornell University website.

His laser eyes aren't a new weapon, unfortunately

Not long after players fire up Gears 5 next month -- assuming they go straight into ?the campaign and not the versus mode or the horde mode or the Escape mode -- they'll earn an achievement that nods knowingly to a well-worn gaming meme. That alone isn't surprisi??ng, but the man behind the meme steered one of Xbox's biggest competitors until recently.

Gears 5 went gold ahead of its September 6 launch. Alongside that milestone, developer The Coalition revealed the game's achievements. The campaign's first achievement is called "My Body is Ready" and it's earned by completing boot camp (presumably the tutorial section). The phrase "my body is ready" was turned into Nintendo ex-president of North America Reggie Fils-Aime's catchphrase after he said it live on-stage at E3 2007 during a Wii Fit presentation:

Fils-Aime retired in April, going out as one of the more popular and beloved executives the video game industry has ever seen. That means Fils-Aime has time to notice and acknowledge the reference, publicly thanking Xbox head Phil Spen??cer along ??the way:

It also means Fils-Aime now has all the time in the world to play Gears 5. Go get Seriously ??5.0, Reggie. Put that time to good use.

Retro Studios might've just teased a new character

We miss Reggie. We reall?y do! It's been a few day??s since Reggie Fils-Aimé departed from Nintendo to enjoy the sweet, leisurely retired life, but the sting of his absence from this industry hasn't let up.

As Brett recently highlighted, there is a silver lining. Now that he's no longer the president and face of Nintendo of America, Reggie has more breathing room to do his thing on Twitter. So far, it's mostly been a bittersweet collection of knickknacks that are sure to spark fond memories for Nintendo fans. His first E3 badge, from 2004. That gigantic Mii head. An office decked out in amiibo. Then came the gifts.

The Mario statue, in particular, is worth a closer look. The inscription reads: "Congratulations on your retirement and years of dedicated service. From all your friends at Nintendo and fans around the w?orld."

It's all so very heartwarming. Seeing these sincere gifts brings?? some much-needed closure.

There's also the matter of Metroid Prime 4 developer Retro Studios' framed "Thanks for Playing!" tribute to Reggie – it may hold a secret. If you zoom in on the bottom-left corner of the artwork, yo???u can faintly see what appears to be a robotic hand of unknown origin. Once you notice the mystery character's appendage, you can't unsee it. Shout-out to Destructoid reader Mydude for scoping this out.

It could be a sly clue related to a future announcement, or it might end up being nothing of substance. That's kind of the fun of wild Nintendo-fueled speculation, isn't it? Either way, talk about on-brand.

If and when Reggie eases up on the Twitter updates or eventually decides it's time to step out of the limelight, he can ??rest easy knowing that he's had a positive impact on many?? people's lives.

Even if it's an E3 sendoff

[Update: Reggie was able to tweet out another farewell message yesterday on his ??last day with his new Twitter account, perhaps bookending his career at Nintendo.]

Reggie Fils-Aime is officially retired from his position of president of Nintendo of America as ??of today (April 15, 2019), but his legacy will live on. He is a man who defied expectations and embraced the various nicknames given to him by the community over his storied 13-year career as president of NOA. Doug Bowser will be stepping into his shoes in what seems to be a quiet, seamless contingency plan.

With all that said, I wanted to believe the flimsy rumor that there would be a Nintendo Di?rect last week just so Reggie could have one final send off. That's not to say that he couldn't have pre-recorded another?? series of videos before he left his position: as there's the distinct possibility that he'll appear in Nintendo's E3 festivities. The Big N could also easily have him come back for cameos every now and then.

Now he did post a farewell message back in February, so it's not like he left in the dead of night withou?t saying goodbye. No matter how elaborate the sendoff was though it still probably wouldn't have been enough to properly communicate how much of an impact Reggie had on the company as a whole.

Smash that follow button

Reggie Fils-Aime is living the life of a dream right about now.? Once the president of Nintendo of America, now he's just another regular retired dude. He's probably going to spend his days golfing, fishing, wood-working -- all the happy-go-lucky activities you'd see in a blood pressure medication commercial.

He hasn't, however, gone offline. Reggie joined Twitter, presumably paying a hefty ransom to secure the username @Reggie??. More than 80,000 people have followed him in the tw?o hours since the account was created (at the time of writing). The numbers are skyrocketing by a thousand new followers or so every few minutes.

H??ere is the only tweet Reggie has posted thus far:

I share Chris' sentiment that Nintendo should give Reggie one last Direct at some point. It'd be great to see a final proper sendoff. But, Reggie on Twitter means that we don't have to see him off at all. That's why you should give Reggie a follow. Besides, this Twitter account is probably where Mother 3 will be officially announced.

Thanks for the memories

It's nearly Reggie Fils-Aime's last day at Nintendo. In February, the much-beloved president of Nintendo of America announced that he'd be retiring on April 15, 2019. Nintendo might -- and should -- send ??him off in style.

Although not officially confirmed by Nintendo, Gaming Intel is reporting that its sources say a Nintendo Direct is planned for later this week. It'll supposedly take place Thursday, April 11. That's just ??a few days before Fils-Aime leaves and current senior VP of sales a??nd marketing Doug Bowser takes over.

We don't even have super good guesses as to what this currently-hypothetical Direct might focus on. Persona's Joker is coming to Super Smash Bros Ultimate sometime soon, and this might be an opportunity for a release date. Otherwise, more PokémonSword and Shield, Animal Crossing for Switch, or Luigi's Mansion 3 news might be in the pipeline.

??Most important, though: If this Direct comes to pass, it'll include a heartfelt goodbye from one of the games industry's most influential and admired figures. Fils-Aime will almost certainly thank everyone for making his tenure at Nintendo so great. I hope the Direct happens, because it feels like we, as an audience, need?? a chance to collectively say thank you right back.

I always knew trees were a sham!

While Lyle and I con??tinue to schedule our future fingering endeavors, here's what's been h??appening in video games:

  • Resident Evil 0, 1, and 4 are heading to Switch!
  • Devil May Cry 5 won't have any DLC outside of a free patch!
  • Reggie's retirement and more!

So, unfortunately, our virtual recreation of Lyle's home and day-to-day life was a tad bit flawed. Lyle now has the belief that trees are a “conspiracy” after spotting one of our developers replacing the tree textures with a more appropri?ate and seasonal re-texture of the trees around his home. Basically, he noticed a random dude swapping out tree models.

So, now Lyle is even more on edge than normal. This doesn't help with the content creation we need to have ready on a week-to-week basis. I'm afraid we'll need to pull Lyle out and wipe everything. What does this mean for Pregame Discharge? Not a damn thing. Let's just say Lyle's sanity will be... Less fragile than normal going ??forward. This is fine.

Discharged question of the week: What games do you think Reggie will be playing the most in his retirement years? I'd like to think he's already preparing for the next Animal Crossing.

Doug Bowser stepping up

It's always sad to see a beloved, personable member of a well-liked company move out of the public eye. Today, Nintendo confirmed that Reggie Fils-Aime, the longstanding president of Nintendo of America, will retire. His last day is set for April 15, 2019 and his replacement will be Doug Bowser.

T?hat's not a bit?, by the way! Doug Bowser is the current senior VP of sales and marketing.

Doug Bowser joined Nintendo and promptly kidnapped Mario and Luigi

"Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever," Fils-Aime said in a statement. "It's a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I've wo??rked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world's most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not 'game over' for me, but instead 'leveling up' to more time with my wife, family and friends."

It's the most Reggie response ever and a reminder of why we hold him so dear, as is this heartfelt vi??deo message to Nintendo fans. "From the bottom of my heart, thanks again for everything."

I vastly underestimated how hard this goodbye would hit me. If you want to relive some of the good times over the past decade and a half, Nintendo has put togeth??er a playlist of Reggie's greatest hits.

"Inside and outside our company, Reggie is kno??wn as an exceptional leader," said Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa. "We are grateful that he is leaving the bus?iness in good shape with strong momentum. While we will miss him and we wish him the very best in his retirement, we are also pleased to have such an able successor ready to step into that role. Doug Bowser and the rest of the team will ensure a seamless transition and continued momentum for Nintendo."

How about one final Nintendo Direct appearance for old times' sake?

F-f-f-forever?

So Nintendo has been wishy-washy overall with the whole NES and SNES Classic situation, particularly in regards to the former close to launch. Originally they said they were printing more, then didn't, then acquiesced in 2017 and discontinued the NES Classic. It was a wild ride. Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo of America boss Re??ggie Fils-Aime re-iterates that yeah, they're pretty much done.

After noting that they "worked very hard" for both to have the best games possible, he reminds folks that "these products are going to be available through the holiday season and once they sell out, they’re gone. And that’s it." Instead of giving people a ton of games in one go Reggie says that Nintendo fans should subscribe to the Switch Online service, which is currently delivering NES games to the Switch platform. Reggie s?ays that this is the "main way that consumers will be able to experience that legacy content."

So yeah, not only are the Classics allegedly a pain to make, but they're struck proverbial gold by making people pay a subscription service for games instead of owning them. I can see a long term goal of steadily raising the price after it potentially ex?pands to SNES and beyond and people start to depend on the cloud save service.

Ninte?ndo always says that it likes to take risks, but that doesn't mean they can't be calculated. ?There's a reason they've gotten to the point they're at now.

'What happens moving forward? We'll see'

Speaking in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime addressed Red Dead Redemption 2 not having made an appe??arance on Nintendo's hybrid?-console, Switch.

While many would consider a game with the insane scope, scale and top-tier visual class of Rockstar's we?stern adventure may be beyond the capabilities of Nintendo's baby, but Reggie says it's more a question of development time, and calendars simply not syncing up.

"We’d love for (Red Dead) to be there," stated Fils-Aime. "But again - and this is where there needs to be an understanding of just the development process - Red Dead has been in development for years, time that predated any communication of Nintendo Switch. So, from the developer’s mentality, they need to move forward and finish the game they’ve been working on and then be in a position to look at other opportunities. Any game from a key third-party that’s coming out now, typically that development started well before any conversations about Nintendo Switch. What happens moving forward? We’ll see. But that’s how you wind up with a situation with Red Dead not being available on our platform".

Elsewhere in the interview, Reggie goes on to discuss his excitement regarding future DLC reveals in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, as we?ll as the incredible success Nintendo had during the recent Black Friday ?sales. You can check out the full interview with Mr. Fils-Aime at the link below.

That's a lot of cash

We all know that the holiday season is absolutely crucial for ??pretty much every company in existence, but to really drive the point home, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aimé wants you to know just how important ??it is.

Speaking to Yahoo Finance, Reggie explains, "We typically do, in the Americas, about 60% of our revenue during that time frame. The reason that it’s so significant is first, our products make great gifts. Whether you’re talking about Nintendo ??Switch, whether you’re talking about Nintendo 2DS, we really do well with that gift-giving occasion." 60%? Yowza.

Reggie explains that this period entails the months of October through December, so it's a decent amount of time to batten down the hatches before the Black Friday and pre-Christmas rush. Although this period is make-or-break for a lot of companies, the NOA boss isn't too worried, recalling a mantra of a former company president: "Whe??n things are going well, don’t get caught up in that, and when things are going poorly don’t be too sad about that either."

While Nintendo is always looking for an explosive holiday season, they have a lot to be thankful for a year and a half into the Switch's life cycle with a Pokemon console release and the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Ultimate arriving just before Christmas. I'm thinking the "multiple Switch units per household" plan will start to really kick in this year?.

64-bits of sadness

For the past two holiday seasons, Nintendo has released mini variants of the NES and SNES consoles. Along with being a pretty faithful replication of the gray boxes, they included pre-packed games that were curated to pe?rfectly tickle your nostalgia bone. T??hey were love letters to an era when Nintendo dominated the market.

Many people were expecting an N64 Classic for 2018, but that seems to be off the table. Speaking with Kotaku about the Switch's online service and Smash Ultimate's roster, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said, "I would not ever rule something ou?t, but what I can tell you is certainly that's [N64 Classic] not in our planning horizon."

Going deeper, Fils-Aime stated, "We were clear when we did the first two Classic series that, for us, these were limited time opportunities that were a way for us as a business to bridge from the conclusion o??f Wii U as a hardware system to the launch of Nintendo Switch...We've also now been very clear that as the consumer looks forward to engaging w??ith our classic content that is going to happen more and more with the subscription service."

That last bit opens up the door for other platforms to eventually reac??h the Switch Online service, but nothing else was said on the matter. For the? time being, an N64 Classic is not happening and certainly won't be releasing in 2018. I'm sorry to dash your hopes.

Someone had to ask, right

E3 2018 -- the year of Super Smash Bros. As a fan of the series since day one on Nintendo 64 I was all-in on the decision to to make Nintendo's conference all about Smash, but some people weren't so thrilled. "Where's [x]?" people said afterward -- and Metroid Prime 4 was one of the most talk??ed about variables in that equat?ion.

Well, Nintendo heard those cries, and NOA president Reggie Fils-Aimé has a canned response for ya. When Game Informer asked him about Metroid Prime 4, Reggie fired back: "Last year was important to us to message to the Metroid fan that there was a Metroid Prime experience in development, as we showed Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS. We didn’t want that fan to say “You just launched a new system, when are you going to bring me a Metroid on that platform?” We said it was coming. This year, with so many games launching effectively between [now] and the first half of next year, we wanted to focus on those games. Rest assured, Metroid Prime 4 is still in development and proceeding well."

I think we all kind of expected this would take time, even if some folks are ge??tting antsy at the fact that Nintendo hasn't shown any footage ye??t.
