It's quite fitting.

GOG has announced that their PC re-release of Capcom’s 1998 classic Resident Evil 2 will be available on August 27, 2024. I mean the original version of Resident Evil 2, not the 2019 remake. Of course. Just clarifying.

While Resident Evil 2 is often best remembered as a PS1 title, it was also released on ot??her platforms, including Windows. Unfortunately, PC games from the era can be extremely finicky on modern platforms. There’s plenty of voodoo you can do to pull it off, but for th?ose who don’t want to bother, GOG’s re-release will be pretty tempting. Rather than simply re-introduce the original Windows version back into the wilds, they’re going the extra mile to make sure it’s more comfortable on our futuristic super-computers.

//youtu.be/1EuuJCGWfC8?feature=shared

The list of improvements shows items that are both necessary and hilarious. They include things like “Issue-less game exit?and “Improved game registry settings?among? the audio fixes and improved subtitles. Then there are fewer must-haves like The 4th Survivor and The Tofu Survivor being available from the beg??inning.

The re-releases of the original versions of the first three Resident Evil games were announced this past June, along with the sudden appearance of the first title. 2 and 3 were left pending without a given release date, though you could buy the full trilogy in preparation. We’re still waiting to hear when we’ll see Resident Evil 3.

For my money, Resident Evil 2 is easily the best game in the series. While I have a strong fondness for the 2001 Resident Evil remake, I find that the infested police station is a much better setting than the Spencer Estate. The Resident Evil 2 remake is fantastic in its own right, but something gets lost when you remove t??he tank cont??rols and fixed camera angles.

The PC re-release of Resident Evil 2 will be available on GOG on August 27, 2024.

When you think of horror gaming, chances are you picture Resident Evil in one of its many forms. From its humble beginnings as a puzzle-based zombie game that took cues from Alone in the Dark and Sweet Home, Capcom's survival series has become almost the final word in scary video gaming. Th?ere's not much that comes close to it in terms of worldwide success and brand recognition.

With that, I'm going to attempt to rank all the mainline Resident Evil games that have been released over the decades (almost 30??!) based purely on their sales figures. Now, there are a couple of things I want to clear up before I get started?.

First off: there seems to be some debate about whether the likes of Revelations and Revelations 2 count as "main games" in the series. As such, I won't be discussing them, as no one seems to agree. However, Code Veronica is unanimous when it comes to classing it as a canon RE game. So, in the list it goes.

As for the sales numbers themselves, there doesn't appear to be a consensus on that, either. It would make sense to use Capcom's own figures, but they don't match up with what other sources say. For example: it lists RE4 (the original) numerous times, depending on the platf??orm and release version. Given this, I'll pull information from a number of places, but I will try to keep this as accurate as I can. Also, it ultimately doesn't matter in the end. We're all just trying to get through the week, yeah?

Code: Veronica (2000) - 2.54 million

Resident Evil Code Veronica: Claire Redfield running through a dark corridor.

Taking place just before the military destruction of Raccoon city, Code: Veronica is smack-bang in between Resident Evil 2 and 3. The Wikipedia entry for the game refers to it as the "fourth main installment" in the seri??es, thoug??h if you're not familiar with the franchise, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's a spinoff, seeing as it's not a numbered game. I've made that mistake in the past.

It's also considered one of the strongest entries, with pretty much universal acclaim across the board. Metacritic shows a review score of 94 and a user rating of 9.1 for the Dreamcast version. You'll sometimes see it on lists of the top Resident Evil games of all time. With such praise, it's no wonder there are high hopes that Capcom will remake Code: Veronica at some point.

Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999) - 3.50 million

Resident Evil 3 Nemesis: Jill Valentine walking down the stairs in Raccoon Police Department.

I still have fond memories of being in my teens and playing the 1999 release of Resident Evil 3. I loved the second game, and the third entry was just as fantastic to me. I was terrified of the prospect of bumping into Nemesis at unexpected intervals, but my sweaty hands and greasy face (teenager, remember) fought bravely. And that was the last time I tru??ly felt free. Sigh.

Anyway...three and a half million in sales is definitely noteworthy, especially for a time when gaming wasn't quite the behemoth industry it is today. Nemesis was the third-best game in Japan for 1999 ?where it was called Last Escape ?according to data originally published by Famitsu. That placed it ahead of Gran Turismo 2 and Dino Crisis.

Resident Evil 2 (1998) - 4.96 million

Resident Evil 2 (1998) - Leon Kennedy stands agog in a weapons store.

Now we come to my favorite Resident Evil game of all time. Is this a nostalgia thing? Almost certainly, yes. But I still recall being blown away by its visuals and the fact that the game dropped you right in the middle of the action. Unheard of at the time, when I think about it. I played this game to death when it first came out, even attempting to unlock the ability to play as Tofu.

Coming just a couple of years after the original, RE2 seemed to fall just shy of its predecessor in terms of sales. B??ut it absolutely (in my eyes, at least) took what made the first game such a hit and upped just about everything. Yes, two and a half decades later, it's dated, but it's a classic. But that first time Mr. X burst through a wall will go down as one of the most frightened I've ev?er been while playing a game.

Resident Evil (1996) - 5.08 million

Resident Evil: Chris Redfield stands in the main entrance of the Spencer Mansion.

There's some debate about when the "survival horror" genre actually began. One thing that most would agree on is that it didn't start with the original Resident Evil. However, it's generally considered the first game to be described as a survival horror. Some would consider 1992's Alone in the Dark ?which influenced RE ?to be the first. But the term can retroactively describe even earlier releases, it see??ms.

That aside, it doesn't detract from Resident Evil's impact on the gaming world. Its? blend of exploration, puzzle solving, and a zombie infestation combined to make it one of the scariest games ever released at the time. For t?hat alone, it's gone down in the history books as probably the most important horror game of all time.

Resident Evil Remake (2002) - 5.25 million

Resident Evil remake: Barry Burton looking quizzically at a photo while Jill Valentine sits in the distance.

You could argue that this reimagining of the first Resident Evil installment was what kick-started Capcom's keen interest in remaking the older games from scratch. However, this came out some 17 years before the RE2 remake, which is a fact that hammers hom?e just how long the series has been going for.

This 2002 do-over of RE kept the third-person perspective and tank controls of its ancestor, but gave a boost to the visuals. It was a much darker version than the original, I found, but it retained the franchise's position in the limelight a good few years before the fourth game would come alon?g and absolutely smash the boundaries o??f survival horror.

Resident Evil Zero (2002) - 5.45 million

Resident Evil Zero: Rebecca Chambers walks down a dimly lit corridor.

With the release of both a remake and a brand-new entry, 2002 was evidently a good year to be a Resident Evil fan. If you wanted to play the games in chronological order based on timeline, Zero would be the one to start with. Covering the events befo?re the 1??996 game, this one is a prequel and sees you playing as both Rebecca Chambers and convict Billy Coen.

Sadly, I never finished this one, though I did enjoy the fact that you could switch between both characters at a moment's notice. This was something of a departure from previous Resident Evil games, where you typically play?ed one campaign before playing the story again as someone else. Novel.

Resident Evil 4 Remake (2023) - 7 million

Resident Evil 4 remake: a close-up of Ashely Graham looking worried.

The numbers are starting to climb up, but we haven't yet reached the tens of millions. Also, given that Resident Evil 4 Remake is the latest installment to be released ?launching in March 2023 ?this number is only going to change as time moves o??n. The previous entries on this list are probably not shifting many copies now, given their general? ages.

The original RE4 is easily considered one of ?if not the ?best game in the series. So, you can imagine the pressure Capcom was under to make the remake nothing short of stellar. Fortunately, the studio pulled it off, bringing everything fans loved about the 2005 relea??se, but -- actually, you don't need me to tell you how good it is. No doubt many of you have played the remake already.

Resident Evil 3 Remake (2020) - 8.70 million

Resident Evil 3 Remake: Jill Valentine sat on a train looking moody.
Image via Steam/Capcom.

Don't be too surprised that this has (so far) sold more than RE4. Remember, the latter has only been out just over a year, while the remake of Resident Evil 3 has had a good while longer to rack up the numbers. It's not quite as high in terms of sales figures as some of the other games, but it's st??ill a sizeable chunk??, especially for such a short game.

That was largely the main criticism of RE3. That, and it dialed back the puzzles a tad. But even for a short horror title, it was able to capture the essence of its?? 1999 counterpart and inject some much-needed modernity into the mix. Of course, it also kept the Nemesis antagonist, which would have been criminal to leave out.

Resident Evil Village (2021) - 10 million

Resident Evil Village: a werewolf creature roars at night.

Now we're into the juicy numbers. It was very recently that Capcom announced Resident Evil Village had smashed 10 million copies, and is the fastest game in the whole series to achieve this. Much like RE4 Remake, we can expect the eigh??th installment to keep racking up those figures over time. B??ut we can already see how successful the series continues to be after all these years.

Village is ?in a way ?the second installment that is trying to do something different with the franchise, much like RE7 before it. Gone are the classic zombies and third-person camera angles. Replaced instead by a much more involved perspective, grittier visuals, and a return to form for gamers who just want to ogle a digital matriarch.

Resident Evil 6 (2012) - 13.10 million

Resident Evil 6: a zombie attacking Leon Kennedy at the bottom of some stairs.

This one might be a surprise to some. If you know the general trajectory of Resident Evil quality, you'll be familiar with the sixth game's rep??utation. Pretty much tacking on horror as an aside, the series was, by this point, almost entirely about bombastic? action than tension. This 2012 installment is typically regarded as one of the weakest of the mainline games.

Or so I thought. The fact that it's sold over 13 million copies must be a testament to how well it did upon release, or some time after it. Steam shows it as "mostly positive" for reviews, while Metacritic has it down as 67 out of 100. It seems weird, then, that the sales figures appear to be at odds with the overall reception of RE6. But that's show business, baby!

Resident Evil 4 (2002) - 13.20 million

Resident Evil 4: Leon Kennedy points his gun at a blue medallion.

I'm going to confess something right now. Please don't hate me for this, but...I don't consider the original Resident Evil 4 to be the best in the series. I know, I know. It's sacri??lege. But I think it's because I played it many years after it was released. By this point, the control scheme felt outdated and the voice a??cting felt too cheesy for something that had moved into darker and more sincere territory.

That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. It's a great Resident Evil game. Just not my favorite. But I could still see why everyone loved it so much.?? Its switch to an over-the-shoulder perspec??tive was genre-defining and while being more action-orientated would be the later games' detriment, it worked out pretty nicely in this case. It's just a shame I was late to the party to truly appreciate it.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017) - 13.30 million

Resident Evil 7: a dark look at the Baker mansion entrance hallway.
Image via Steam/Capcom.

When I first saw the teasers and trailers for this, I was massively excited. Capcom was rewriting their own rules for Resident Evil 7 and it was a decision that helped breathe new life into the waning series. It had lashings of P.T. (long-dead by this point) and Outlast, whic??h did? nothing to quell my thirst for this game.

Going back to its horror roots, Biohazard seemed to be a way to undo what the last two or three entries had done. While Resident Evil 2 is my favorite overall for both its gameplay and trip down memory lane, RE7 is easily my favorite of the modern games.

Resident Evil 2 Remake (2019) - 13.90 million

Resident Evil 2 remake: Leon Kennedy holds a shotgun while standing in the rain in front of RPD.
Image via Steam/Capcom.

While we mustn't forget the 2002 remake of Resident Evil, the 2019 modern take on RE2 can be said to be the start of a new era for Capcom in terms of remaking classic games. Nearly 14 million in sales?? over the past few years is probably all the evidence you need to understand just how huge this game was upon release.

Obviously, the game itself played a huge part in that popularity. Had it been a straight remake of the 1998 release, it probably wouldn't have been as well-received aside from some appeal to older fans. But bringing back the over-the-shoulder camera from RE4, adding Mr. X from the offset, switching the puzzles and overall level design around to keep things fresh are the ha??llmarks of a great remake that still hits that nostalgia spot.

Resident Evil 5 (2009) - 14.60 million

Resident Evil 5: Sheva Alomar holding a very long rifle.
Image via Steam/Capcom.

Much like RE6, I was surprised to see that not only had the fifth Resident Evil game sold so many millions of copies, it's actually the highest-selling entry in the series. Right at the start of this article, I posted a link to Capcom's list of its?? top releases. I went through to double check these numbers. It turns out, yes, it does ?indeed add up to 14.6 million when you include all versions of the game.

I never played RE5 beyond the demo. The fact that it had a co-op mode ?in Gears of War fashion ?was a neat idea, but it's shift towards heavy action was off-putting for me. Still, you know my views on Resident Evil 4, so what do I know, eh? The nu?mbers speak for themselves.

The remakes of the older Resident Evil games are exceptional reimaginings of some iconic entries in the survival horror genre. But with all this modernizing of such classics, it's easy to forget how we used to play games back in the day. That's probably why this one modder has injected some nostalgia into the RE2 remake.

In order to mix up the contemporary with the retro, Nexus Mods user alphaZomega has brought back the fixed camera angles, putting them into 2019's Resident Evil 2. From what ??I can tell, the game is still exactly as it is, but it just puts in that bit of a throwback to a bygone era.

Resident Evil 2 Remake: Claire Redfield in the STARS office, holding her abdomen in pain.
Image via alphaZomega/Nexus Mods.

In fact, fixed cameras a??re so antiquated, that the modder has put in a definitio?n of what they actually are:

When starting the game, you will see your character from the point of view of a mounted / fixed camera cine??matically pointed at the scene. Then when trying to walk out of frame, it ??will change to another camera based on your new location, with the camera angles transitioning to one another in a seamless sequence that will follow you wherever you go. There are over 1700 fixed cameras all carefully placed and the game can be completed from beginning to end entirely using these cameras.

I never thought I'd see the day

In terms of what the "RE2R Cla?ssic" mod features, you can also expect to find the implementation of autoaim. This is because, as alphaZomega says, aiming in a fixed camera perspective is "not easy," so this option should make things less difficult.

To aid aiming even further, there are also laser sights, and if you want that extra dose of Resident Evil 2 nostalgia, there's an option to choose between modern c??ontrols and the lesser-spotted "tank controls" feature from yesteryear??.

Decades after first hitting our PCs and consoles, Capcom's Resident Evil series is still going strong, perhaps even doing better than ever. It could be because the studio knows exactly what it's doing with its IP (RE5 and RE6 notwithstand??????????????????????????ing), or because different entries offer something new and/or old, appeasing both younger gamers and veteran players alike.

Speedrunning is, from my own outsider's perspective, an impressive effort in constantly chasing new goals. At first, runners might try to simply finish a game as fast as possible. Then, they might try to fully finish it, or complete certain objectives, or hit credits with limiters on themselves. It's that last bucket that CarcinogenSDA's run of Resident Evil 2 Remake at AGDQ 2024 falls under.

I've been a fan of Carci's speedrunning for a while. His AGDQ 2018 run of Resident Evil 7 is an easy recommendation for anyone who wants to see someone exemplify their mastery of a game by quickly adjusting their run on the fly. Last night at AGDQ 2024, Carcinogen took the stage with one simple, but incredibly difficult, objective: make it to the end of either Leon or Claire's route in Resident Evil 2 Remake, without taking any damage, on Hardcore.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbh5K9sJC-w

If you've ever spent some time running through the hall??s of Raccoon City P.D., especially on Hardcore difficulty, you know how daunting that seems. Different types of undead litter the world, all with different placements and tendencies meant to keep players on their toes. Oh, and there's Mr. X, too.

A smooth run

As Carcinogen lays out at the top, this particular run falls a bit more under the challenge run category?smooth r??un," as he calls it—than a traditional speedrun. While there are instances where the character on-screen may flinch, or have to use defensive items like a knife, as long as they do not translate directly into damage the run is still good. While damage wouldn't have stopped the showcase, Carci? promised to donate $100 to the Prevent Cancer Foundation (the charity AGDQ benefits) for every instance of damage.

The fact that Carcinogen was ready to run either character's route through Resident Evil 2, bas??ed on audience votes, is already impressive. What followed was an even more imp?ressive display of that knowledge, with a few teeth-clenching moments along the way. And if you don't want to know the result, maybe jump back up and watch the VOD quick before scrolling on.

Image via GamesDoneQuick

Escaping the city

If you couldn't tell by now, or were maybe avoiding it, Carcinogen succeeds in taking no damage throughout the run. It's an incredible a??chievement to pull off in a marathon setting like Games Done Quick. While runners practice a ton, making something big like this happen on the stage, rather than in your?? typical set-up back home, is always an exciting moment. When someone has one shot to perfectly land a display of all their accrued knowledge, and they nail it? That's worth watching.

Fittingly, Carcinogen pops off. After the final boss of Resident Evil 2 is down and defeated, he yanks off his headset and takes a celebratory run through the crowd gathered behind him. He'd later post on Twitter that he was "still in disbelief" he pulled it off, and thanking fellow no-damage runner MattDaRoc, who was on call for the GDQ run as well.

It was the perfect cap-off to a heavily stacked, exciting day at AGDQ 2024. Twice a year, the Games Done Quick streams occupy my second monitor for a whole week, and the Tuesday line-up was a day of bangers. From retro hits run by humans and one very good dog, to a blindfolded bout with an Octopath Traveler 2 boss, to whatever happened in that Granny run, it was an exceptional day. What a?? fitting way to close it out, for the stateside folks that lost some sleep today to see the run through.

What's next for Carcinogen? Well, he teased something quite intriguing: working on a no-damage run of Final Fantasy VIII, as well maybe some Resident Evil 3 Remake. Follow the rest of GDQ's week over on Twitch here.

Resident Evil 4 being nominated for several categories at The Game Awards 2023 shows that remakes are still very much in vogue. It seems evident that we should never forget the classics. And that's exactly what this one modder is doing with the original RE2.

Perhaps in an attempt to blend modern Resident Evil with the retro installments, Itch.io user PerroAutonomo has been remaking the second game ?in the series. Only, they aren't updating the visuals or the cheesy dialogue. No. They're sticking with how the original 1998 release looked, but have made it into a ?first-person shooter.

The above video from the YouTube channel Residence of Evil does a half hour playthrough of the demo. As for when the full thing will be released, PerroAutonomo's page says they may not finish it, and the current build "has many errors" (translated by Google).

Complete with fully remade cut scenes

The footage shows how authentic this unofficial remake is. It endeavors to keep the visual style of Resident Evil 2 but chooses a different perspective. We get to see a lot of the game? from new angles never seen before, and?? even though it's a fan project, it's still impressive to see.

As Capcom marches forward with its iconic survival horror series, we welcome whatever's on the horizon. With more Resident Evil remakes being confir?med, everyone's going to be wondering whic?h one's going to get the remake treatment next.

We may well get to see a fresh take on one of the spin-offs, such as Code Veronica or Umbrella Chronicles. Or maybe RE5 will get a?nother crack at not being a disappointment. Time will ?tell on that front.

Shuffling along like a zombie

What's the opposite of a speedrun? A "slowrun," perhaps? If you want a Resident Evil challenge that requires you to clear your schedule for the next couple of days, this could be what you're looking for. You see, it turns out the 1998 Resident Evil 2 can actually be completed from start to fin??ish without walk??ing at all.

This was proved by Twitch streamer and speedrunner Punchy (as spotted by PCGamesN). In an edited video uploaded to YouTube recently, they give a commentary on this unique challenge, which saw them get to the end credits of Resident Evil 2 without taking a physical step. While this video is a 40-minute highlight of the run itself, Punchy shows in the ?closing moments how long it took them to achieve this: 13 hours and 34 minutes!

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gjJ4ozkVmE

When asking whether or not the OG Resident Evil 2 can be beaten without walking, Punchy had to establish a couple of rules. First: they could not initiate a walk themselves (i.e. by pressing on the D-pad to walk). However, they could turn to face directions, and walking upstair?s was allowed, as it's an automatic animation when the player presses the use button.

How was it achieved?

The way they were able to move was by simply aiming their gun. Doing so does shift Leo??n forward ever so slightly. We??'re talking inches. To give an idea of how slow this is, it takes around five minutes to get through the first three screens of the game.

One big challenge was fighting against the auto aim. See, Punchy was playing the Japanese version of Resident Evil 2, which comes with a?uto-aim always on. This meant that, in areas where enemies were off-screen but otherwise in the opposite direction Leon needed to g??o, things became tricky as he struggled to make progress.

[caption id="attachment_392889" align="aligncenter" width="640"]Resident Evil 2 (1998): Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield holding guns. Image via Techradar.[/caption]

The ultimate obstacle, however, came during the fin?al boss sequence, in which a five-minute timer begins. Give??n how slow Leon is moving, this felt like an impossible achievement.

Indeed, Punchy almost gave up, choosing to run the final few meters towards the end?? cut scene. However, some off-stream testing showed that, by aiming the magnum down at the ground, Leon can actually get enough push to make it to the end of the game before the?? timer runs out.

The streamer admits this was not the most optimal run. If you feel you want to give it a try, Punchy has proven that it is possible to beat the original Resident Evil 2 without taking a step forward. ?But be prepared for one of the?? slowest game play sessions of your life.

A whole bunch of Resident Evil is coming to the Switch

Nintendo Switch owners will get a chance to check out the modern run of Resident Evil, thanks to the cloud. Resident Evil Village arrives October 28, with three more Resident Evil games coming in 2022, all via the cloud.

The first up is Village, which launches on October 28 and will get the upcoming Winters' Expansion on December 2. A demo is available now, so you can test out how the cloud processing works for y?our setup.

Winters' Expansion adds a new third-person option to Resident Evil Village, as well as a new story follow?ing Ro?se Winters and some new Mercenaries content.

Also coming to the Nintendo Switch via cloud are three more Resident Evil games, all hitting this year. The modern remakes of Resident Evil 2 and will come to Nintendo Switch alongside Resident Evil 7, all available through cloud streaming.

Resident Evil cloud switch

Scary clouds on the horizon

Seeing these games come to Nintendo Switch at all is pretty exciting, though the cloud addendum puts a bit of an asterisk on it. These are some pretty hefty games, and it's understandable that the Switch alone probably can't do all the heavy lifting. It's far from the first game to try it out, either.

But these cloud versions have had a history of being pretty spotty, and in some cases don't hold up well to comparisons. At the very least, it's nice t?hat the demo gives players an option to try the current implementation out, and see if it's the way they want to experience Ethan Winters' Hand-Slammin' Holiday Adventure.

Resident Evil Village arrives on the Nintendo Switch via cloud on October 28, 2022. The other three Resident Evil entries will hi?t the Switch via cloud before year's end.

Thanks, Capcom

Resident Evil has one of the most loyal fanbases out there, and those who love the series have been looking forward to playing their favorite games of the series on next-gen consoles. Earlier this year, Capcom announced that they'd be able to do just that, because they had free updates for Resident Evil 2, 3, and 7 in the works for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Resident Evil next-gen updates

During today's Capcom Showcase as part of the summer news blitz, they let us know that actually, these updated versions are available instantly. That was a nice surprise! The Xbox update will even be available with Xbox Smart Delivery, making it even easier for players ??to update to the best version for their console.

As reported a few months ago, the updated versions mostly just give us nicer graphics ?for each of the titles. It's nice that a company would go out of their way to make sure their games look amazing, free of charge. Now go and download your free update!

Just like we'd expect, but it's nice to know for sure

Shortly after announcing that Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, and Resident Evil 7 will be getting shiny new PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions this year (as well as some equivalent "upgrade patches" on PC), Capcom has confirmed that players' current save data will transfer. You'll be able to carry your PS4 and Xbox One save data forward, and Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition's DLC will "transfer over" as well, according to the publisher.

//twitter.com/RE_Games/status/1503776384870760448

This sounds so straightforward when i??t's laid out like that ?arguably to the? point of asking "wait, how is this even a story?" ?but there are no guarantees. Things can get needlessly messy when shifting from one generation of consoles to the next.

What this (probably) means for trophies

Among PlayStation players, there's already hope about cashing in on "easy" platinum trophies. With past games like Final Fantasy VII Remake and Death Stranding Director's Cut, players who carried their PS4 data forward onto PS5 were able to automatically? unlock their trophies again once they booted up the PS5 version since the PS4 and PS5 lists are separate. It's a strangely fun sensation ?like, "Hey, you earned this." Capcom hasn't specifically spoken ab?out the trophy situation on PS5, but that'd make sense.

Until now, I didn't realize people were out here tracking "auto-pop" trophies. It's neat!

Glancing around on Twitter, I saw some folks express a deep desire to not have to go back and complete all of the Resident Evil 7 DLC trophies again on PS5, as the Banned Footage stuff ?especially the unforgiving Ethan Must Die mode ?can be a nightmare. I got the base-game platinum, but never that one. Now now, not ever. I don't have it in me.

[caption id="attachment_312491" align="alignnone" width="1920"]Resident Evil 7 PS5 version Molded screenshot After running through RE7 so many times, I've still got the Baker's wacky basement layout (mostly) memorized.[/caption]

As for the current-gen-ification of RE2, RE3, and RE7 in general, I'm stoked. Any excuse to re-run these games is good enough for me, especially in the case of Resident Evil 2, which I've still got some trophies to check off. It's literally ??a yearly tradition for some of us.

Which of these games are you most eager to revisit? Reminder: they're ??free upgr??ades.

VR-ify the whole Resident Evil catalog, Capcom

After Capcom's outstanding early work in Resident Evil 7, and Armature Studio's recent home run with Resident Evil 4 for Oculus Quest 2, I hope the VR side of the series can expand to not just Resident Evil Village, but other games, too. When everything goes right, it's a pretty unforgettable experience. I mean, even fan-made mods can get the job done in some cases. You've got to see the latest footage of Praydog's Resident Evil 2 VR mod.

As demonstrated in newly-recorded footage from Eurogamer and Upload VR, the Resident Evil 2 VR mod for PC has made great strides, to the point w?here I could see myself playing the entire campaign (and secondary run) with a sweaty headset on.

While not widely available yet, the RE2 VR mod includes the ability to play in third-person with a gamepad, which could be fun in its own right. The star of the show is a tense first-person mode with motion controls ?just like you?'d expect from an official VR version.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=__L5AV8jA04

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=__au-pS4Z1c

I've seen snippets o??f this stuff be?fore, but never quite like this ?it's so wonderful.

Adding context to the gameplay, UploadVR notes that "a lot of our performance issues are due to screen recording and that the game runs better without those extra demands," while Eurogamer says that Praydog's RE2 VR mod "often comes close to making it feel like the Resident Evil 2 remake was made with nat?ive, first-pers?on VR in mind."

Compared to RE4 VR on Oculus Quest 2, the visuals are much stronger here ("almost photorealistic at times"), but the RE2 VR mod lacks some specialized-for-VR menus and interactions that can keep you fully invested in your surroundings. ??It's still great though!

Interestingly, a few years ago, we heard one explanation for why Capcom skipped VR support in Resident Evil 2 at the time: melding the?? rema??ke's third-person perspective with virtual reality was "not the best way to present the game," according to the producers.

It's hard to say when Capcom will find an opening to explore VR again ?it sure seems like a lot of Resident Evil games are brewing behind the scenes ?but worst case, I hope that more partnerships can be formed to get the older titles in our hands if that's what it comes to. After how well Resident Evil 4 VR turned out, even modified ports woul?d be awesome. (I'd also say the same about several other iconic video game horror series.)

As much as I try not to get my hopes up, I can't he??lp myself here. VR-ify it all!

Pre-orders open now at Prime 1 Studio

Premium merchandise maker Prime 1 Studio has unveiled a marvelous pair of statues depicting Resident Evil protagonists Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, styled after the dynamic duo's recent appearance in 2019 remake Resident Evil 2.

Each 1/4 scale statue stands roughly 22 inches in height and features the respective heroes caught in the midst of mayhem at the R.C.P.D. - while laying waste to two unfortunate members of Raccoon City's newly-dead city-dwellers. Fine details include the scatte?ring of various supplies, a damaged, ornate staircase, and gruesome wounds on the hapless zombies' rotten bodies. Grisly stuff.

As renown for their high prices as much as their intricate detailing, each statue will retail for around $1,350 USD. For all you mathematical wizards out there, that amounts to $2,700 USD for the complete diorama, not including any shipping or customs charges. Pre-orders are open now on the official Prime 1 Studio website, with the statues expected to ship in the first quarter of 2022. V??ario?us payment plans are also available.

As a reminder Prime 1 is also currently collaborating with Square Enix on this beautiful NieR: Automata piece. Thoug?h the studio is yet to announce a price or?? release date.

But you can't play it yet

Everyone's eyes are firmly trained on the impending launch of Resident Evil 3, but might I ask that you turn your attention back to Resident Evil 2 for just a few minutes?

Resident Evil 2 looks better than ever before thanks to the modding work of MassiHancer. They're working on implementing ray tracing effects to last year's outstanding remake, and it seems to be going stunningly so far. It's still a work-in-progress, but the video that's embedded above shows comparisons between Resident Evil 2 at ultra settings and wit??h the ray?? tracing mod enabled.

MassiHancer makes use of Pascal Gilcher's ray traced global illumination ReShade shader. With this tool, they're able to use the "double contrast" technique which achiev??es the look MassiHancer wants -- particularly lighting that focuses more on the character.

This mod is only for looking, ??not for touching right now. It's not available to download, due to the fact that it's still being created and that ReShade is still in beta. The general hope is that MassiHancer will release it when it's done, but there's no guarantee that'll happen.

Being eaten alive by corpses isn't as bad if they're adorable

Hideki Kamiya, director of Resident Evil 2 and originator of such franchises as Bayonetta and The Wonderful 101, is no stranger to seeing his characters in the hands of other developers. Dante from Devil May Cry, Amaterasu from Okami, and of course, Leon and Claire from Racoon City are just a handful of his creations who have been taken in new direction??s without him.

It's less often than he has one of his games recreated scene-for-scene, but that's exactly what happened with the Resident Evil 2 remake. I asked him what he thought of the new game, and he said "There are some videos of me playing it somewhere, but you have to know that the director of the Resident Evil 2 remake is actually a friend of mine. We were coworkers, we used to go out drinking after work, so before the game was announced, he let me know of his intention to remake it. He asked if I have any recommendations or advice, and I told him 'You're the designer. It's up to you.' and that was the last time we talked about it before i??t was released."

So, what d?id Kamiya think of it? "...after it was released, I was like 'Holy Shit, this is really s??cary!'" he told me. "The next time I see him I'm going to ask 'Can you make some DLC that's a little less scary, with maybe some cute zombies or something like that? (laughs)"

If it was m??e that remade the game, I'd take that as a ??compliment. I'd buy that cute zombie DLC in a heartbeat.

Resident Evil 2 is available now on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

As predicted, this Jill Valentine achievement ties into the newly-revealed Resident Evil 3 remake.

There was already a Nemesis-sized hole in Resident Evil 2's p?olice station. At some point in the near future, there will be a letter to connect the dots even further. Capcom's killing it

Capcom has had a pretty fantastic 2019. The Resident Evil 2 remake and Devil May Cry 5 are both game of the year contenders. Monster Hunter: World got an excellent expansion in Iceborne. Even Teppen, a free-to-play CCG with heroes across Cap??com's many properties, is an up-and-comer that's decently popular.

As part of its new financial report, Capcom has quantified these successes. Leading the way is Resident Evil 2 remake which now sits at 4.7 million sales. That's right on the heels of the original Resident Evil 2 which has plateaued at 4.96 million sales. The remake is still trending in the right direction after it got out to a hot start and shipped three million copies in th??e first four days. With Black Friday and end-of-the-year sales coming up, it's a safe bet that the remake will dethrone the original by the time of the next report.

Also noteworthy is Iceborne weighing in at 2.8 million sales in less than a month. (Iceborne released in early September and these rankings cut off at the end of September.) Success is inevitable considering that Monster Hunter: World is Capcom's best-selling game ever by a large margin?, coming in at 14.1 million sales.

Of 2019's heavy hitters, Devil May Cry 5 fared the worst with 2.7 million sales to date -- although that's still impressive. These rankings also introduce three other members into Capcom's prestigious platinum club. Mega Man 11, Okami HD, and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection&nb??sp;all?? broke the one million lifetime sales barrier.

The feathered star of HouseHouse's Untitled Goose Game continues to spread their wings/dominance across the entire medium of video games, with fans having inserted the tr??oublesome bird into many popular titles via creative and amusing fanart.

But Resident Evil 2 modder Alister/ZombiAli who you may remember from the notorious Thomas the Tank Engine mod may be taking things a little too far. ZombiAli's latest project seeks to replace the terrifying Mr. X with the equally terrif?ying Goose. The gif below shows the mod i??n action as Goose, all wide-winged and dead-eyed, comes barrelling down the corridor towards poor Claire Redfield.

This mod is still in the works, but Alister promises that the final version will include "extra HONKS." We've had quite a few creepy replacements for Mr. X since Resi 2's release, including Pennywise the Dancing Clown, Jason Voorhees and Resident Evil 3's Nemesis. But as scary as these charact??ers are, I??'m not sure if any match the unbridled relentlessness of Goose.

Something wicked this way honks...

BEEP BEEP CLAIRE!

When the remake of Capcom's Resident Evil 2 first hit the scene back in January, the relentless, almost unstoppable villain Mr. X really came into his own, ter??rifying a whole new generation of players with his grim appearance and relentless pursuit of heroes Leon and Claire.

Inventive modders have since taken to replacing the murderous tank for equally frightening figures, such as, erm, Thomas the Tank Engine. Here, talented modder Marcos RC has gone one step further into the horror realm and replaced Mr. X with another nightmarish icon, Pennywise the Dancing Clown, the shape-shifting monster from Stephen King's IT.

In the video above - posted by YouTuber Albert_Fn_Wesker - Pennywise (in his recent Bill Skarsgard incarnation) stalks Claire Redfield around the Raccoon City Police Department. With his unnerving grin, out-of-sorts eyes, and imposing eight-foot frame, its pretty frikkin' creepy. An eerie jingle has been added to the clip, just in case it wasn't unnerving enoug?h. And me without my inha??ler...

Five bucks for the infinite rocket launcher among other items

Resident Evil 2 is a game best enjoyed across multiple playthroughs, and there's something to be said about refining your runs to shave off time or win with certain restrictions in place. That said, if you're one of the many people who will never attain a Hardcore S+ rank, Capcom is now selling a paid unlock. The "All In-Game Rewards Unlock" DLC costs $4.99 and it's available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

The name mostl??y speaks for itself. The DLC opens up The 4th Survivor and The Tofu Survivor modes, extra costumes, the infinite-ammo rocket launcher and minigun, in-game models, and concept art.

Those powerful infinite weapons are the main selling point insofar as 1) they're a pain to unlock in-game and 2) they're fun as hell to wield. If you were to earn them the normal way, you'd need to play on Hardcore mode, use three saves or less, not use any of the other infinite we?apons aside from the knife, and come in under a no-nonsense time limit (2.5 hours for the A scenarios, or 2 hours for the B sc??enarios). In other words, you need to have a reliable plan of attack and stick to it until the end.

This DLC reminds me that I still need to clear Resident Evil 2 on Hardcore and then somehow do it again with the S+ limitations, which I'm not sure I'll ever pull o??ff without losing my mind a bit. I mean, I haven't even finished The 4th Survivor yet. That final gauntlet is too? stressful and I always lose my cool.

Having beaten the game several times now, I feel like I'm in a fine place. I love Resident Evil 2. It's fantastic. But I don't need to put myself through the wringer right now. One day I'll loop back. I wouldn't tell anyone to not buy this unlock if they really want the rocket launcher, but if you're going to further support the game with optional content, I'd kindly suggest the Original Version Soundtrack Swap.

Despite lack of massive spiders

Capcom's Resident Evil 2, that remake that fans were wishlisting for years and years, shifted a lot of copies when it was released. Who knew? In fact, the PC edition of the survival horror title has just passed one million sales since launch.

Leon and Claire's hi-jinx have already overtaken the sales of Resident Evil 7 - yet to break the one million mark - in just two months. Whether this is because Resi 2 is inherently a better game, or whether it is because of this Thomas the Tank Engine mod ?is a question that will no doubt be argued for generations.

Originally released in 1998, Resident Evil 2 took the claustrophobic, panic-inducing horror of the original PlayStation classic and successfully built upon it. Featuring a great soundtrack, a cool conspiracy story, interesting characters an??d several memorable boss battles, t?here's little confusion as to why many today still consider it one of the greatest video games ever made.

'It's about playing the game over and over and over...'

The Resident Evil 2 remake is a hit. It sold bundles, it's critically acclaimed, and I've barely seen any fans who aren't happy with it. It's doing so well amid other Capcom hits that a lot of folks believe the pu??blisher is "back." Based on an interview with the game's director in the latest issue of Game? Informer magazine, it looks like the series is in good hands.

Kazunori Kadoi, who's been with Capcom for over two decades, was given the shot to co-direct the remake with Yasuhiro Ampo and he kind of never looked back. Kadoi explains that although the team 'considered' including the original view scheme as an option, they decided that since they enjoyed the tension of the modern over-the-shoulder cam they decided to have "one defined camera" to avoid "splitting their energy," which would have resulted in a worse game overall (I can think of a few developers that try to do too much, so this is a good tip). Kadoi says that the obvious Resident Evil 7-based RE Engine link influenced their proces??s quite a bit, freeing them up to spend more time on the combat system.

He also goes on to note that they wanted to make Raccoon City bigger in scale and corrects the notion that USB devices weren't around in 1998 (they were invented in 1999 before they hit the mass market): Kadoi maintains that since it's actually just an authentication dongle, which was around at the time, their historical accuracy is safe (this guy is a boss). As for the Tyrant, he tracks your location "no matter how far [they] may be from the player," which is a neat factoid. Oh, and Leon and Claire's stories ar??en't "both canon" per se, as Kadoi claims that "whatever story you choose" is the main timeline.

The most interesting bit of the talk is when Kadoi shares his philosophy on resource management/design, stating: "[it's] not much of a secret aside from a lot of trial and error! It's about playing the game over and over and over and...over. It's ?about constantly tweaking the game along ??the way until it feels like the right level of balance."

It'll be interesting to see how many times the team will have to test out Resident Evil 3 if they do decide to remake it next (all signs point to "yes"). If you haven't played it before, RE3 has a semi-random distribution mechanic for items, allowing for more variety between playthroughs on top of some of the bigger choices (like ?staying to ??fight the Nemesis boss that stalks you the entire game or running). While it clearly seems like a lot of work I'd love for that to return as it's a big part of the game's DNA.

All three parts

Capcom's Resident Evil 2 roundtable discu?ssion has been going pretty well so far, and now it's finally wrapped up with a d??irector-centric part three. All three sessions are available to watch below.

If you want a TLDR version we covered parts one and two already. Part three doesn't reveal all that much outside of random fan trivia, which is still a watch if you're craving more info on the series. Hideki Kamiya, director of the original Resident Evil 2 (his directorial debut), ??joins the crew and sh?ares his thoughts.

He chides the puzzles a bit in good fun and even mentions some old and new development techniques, like how the recent team handled the Ivy (plant) monsters compared to the original crew. It covers a lo??t of nuances from general design to the emotional narrative changes. It's worth a quick watch (they are all, really).

So long, Trenchy

Modders have had a ton of fun toying around with Mr. X in Resident Evil 2, whether it's giving the vigilant pursuer some backing from DMX or turning him into Thomas the Tank Engine. But what if you'd rather slow down and explore th??e police station in relative peace? Well, now there's an answer.

Over on Nexus Mods, maverickheart has whipped up a straightforward mod for Resident Evil 2 that gets rid of Mr. X. He's gone! You won't have to deal with planning wonky routes through the station. You won't have to worry about Mr. X forcing you to duck into a ?room that you never bothered to properly clear out. An?d, best of all, you won't get a panic attack from his constant thudding footsteps.

According to the mod's creator, all the necessary scripted events with Mr. X still function as needed. "X has made sure? to leave friendly ghost in his place to lift up the helicopter for you when it's time."

As nerve-wracking as Mr. X can be, it's worth stressing that his presence is a key ingredient that binds the whole experience together. He's a mostly predictable threat in a game that never wants you to feel too comfortable with your surroundings. Without him, we'd play too safely and wouldn't need to adapt on the fly. Some of my best moments ca?me fro?m him corralling me into places I wasn't ready to face.

You can play Resident Evil 2 however you'd like, though. Options are good!

There's going to be two hits: Thomas hitting you and a Bawitdaba mod playing in the background

I'm glad Capcom has embraced the PC platform because now we can have wacky mods for an already wacky set of games: a list that includes Resident Evil 2. In addition to a ton of fantastic mod work (some of which bring back??? legacy options), a collective of add-ons have been sweeping the nation: Mr. X swaps.

For those of you who might not know what's going on, the Resident Evil 2 remaster brings back a character called the T-00 (colloquially kn??own as "Mr. X") that constantly stalks you throughout much of the game. He's a bit more tenacious in the newer version, leading to all sorts of great videos where people get unexpectedly shocked by his sudden appearance. He's been the go-to focus for the modding community, which kicked off with an "X Gon' Give It to Ya" music mod that serves as his unofficial them??e song.

Now there's a mod to swap his character model for Thomas the Tank Engine, which is all sorts of terrifying. The full instructions for the mod (which include character model files from ZombieAli and sound files by DJPop) can be found here.

First-person mode, a fixed camera, and a freaky new enemy

Continuing the Resident Evil 2 developer roundtable discussion, Capcom has shared more insight into the remake's production.?? This time, they're talking heated discussions, Easter egg?s, and cut content.

On the former topic, the artists were at one point envisioning a more military-themed aesthetic for the Tyrant, but they eventually settled into a look more befitting a city environment. Thank goodness!

Resident Evil 2 early Tyrant design

An unsettling new "jump-scare" enemy type, the "Condemned," was also explored. It would've tied into the remak?e's orphanage, but the id?ea never progressed beyond temp design and animation.

Beyond that, there was once a rough co??ncept for a driving sequence ("We all thought: Why don't you just drive off?") and a scenario with cable cars descending from?? the mountains.

Capcom also toyed with first-person for Resident Evil 2 and using a fixed-camera pe??rspective more in line with the original 1998 release. As the team explained over dinner, "We were thinking of the fixed camera as a sales point, but [over-the-shoulder] was great, so we th??ought we didn't need two types."

Resident Evil 2 cut content - first-person mode

Other scrapped ideas include a more fleshed-out sequence?? with the alligator that involved a crane and a more e??laborate G2 fight with "breaking pillars, electrocuting, and so on." Both were simplified.

If there's one main takeaway from the team, it's this: "With over three and a half years on this game, I think the good part was that we tried the ideas instead of just brainstorming them. All of them." Assuming the next Resident Evil game is given that much breathing room, the future is lo??oking bright.

As teased at the end of the discussion, the next roundtable video is going to bring Resident Evil 2 (1998) director and Platinum Games co-founder Hideki Kamiya i??nto the fold. That's?? gonna be a blast.

'I knew it. Is that a camera?'

I can't imagine the range of emotions creators must feel when a project they've poured themselves into for years finally comes out for the world to experience. That goes for games, movies, books, anything. You always hope for the best: an end result you can stand behind and be proud of even if it's never a commercial hit. If your creative pursuit do??es end up forming a passionate following, that's a bonus.

It's a rare treat to peer behind the scenes and see how creators feel after a big launch. One notable example from last year was seeing God of War director Cory Barlog's reaction to the game's glowing review scores. It was so heartfelt and personal. This week, I've got a more recent video to point to: a post-release dinner discussion with the developers behind this year's Resident Evil 2 remake.

The team started on a similar topic: review scores. It was "nervewracking" to hear how critics received the game and at least one member, senior project manager Hiroyuki Chi, "literally shed tears" when the above-90 Metacritic score went up. "It really does mak?e you cry, those comments."

There wasn't always going to be a demo for Resident Evil 2, and once they decided to go for it, release manager Takuma Uehigashi said he could "feel everyone's hate" when putting the schedule together. "Then, when I explained [producer Jun Takeuchi's] 30-minute rule, everyone was like 'Huh!?'" The concept behind th?e 1-Shot demo was divisive, but timing its release close to launch worked out.

An early iteration of Resident Evil 2's gadget UI

On the topic of underappreciated details, the team honed in on Ada's sunglasses, which, let me tell you, I appreciated the heck out of them. They ruled! The developers also brought up early designs for the inventory UI, the scale of the game leading up to the Police Station, and their love o??f toilets.

Aside from the fun anecdote??s, this is worth watching just ??to see snippets of test footage.

Did X "give it to you", LIKE IN THAT SONG?

Well, Resident Evil 2. That was certainly a long-awaited remake that ultimately delivered on its fans' hopes and nightmares. At least I think it did, that appears to be the word on the street at any rate, and I'm the hip guy to go to when you wanna what what all the kidz are down wi??th.

Still, THE MAN at Capcom isn't entirely sure what you made of it, despite the fact that you threw a fortune their way, and has thus released a questionnaire to gather fan feedback on the survival horror title. Obviously the questions co?ver topics such as platform and demograph, along with your views on the game's aesthetics, contro??ls and scare factor.

No doubt the correlated feedback will be used to gather intel on future projects, such as DLC or the now seemingly inevitable remake of Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. So if you don't mind giving up your thoughts, alongside some personal information, then you can find the survey right here.

Resident Evil 2 is available now on PS4, PC and Xbox One.

In part because it has silly masks

It's going to be a good long while before I've had my fill of Resident Evil 2. The more I play, the more fun I seem to have?, and that's no accident. As with the series at large, Capcom has done a marvelous job crafting a game that's enjoyable your first time through and only more rewarding as you optimize the fastest routes and unlock delightfully overpowered ge?ar. Single-player games can have longevity too!

For players who've run the gamut with Leon and Claire's outings, there's a new set of extra mini-modes exploring four familiar characters who never made it out of Resident Evil 2 alive. Similar to Hunk's 4th Survivor mode included at launch, The Ghost Survivors runs you through an action-packe??d gauntlet where every bullet, flash grenade, and footstep can have an impact on your s??uccess or failure.

There are three outings to start off -- "No Time to Mourn" with local businessman Robert Kendo, "Runaway" with the mayor's daughter Katherine Warren, and "Forgotten Soldier" with U.S.S. member Ghost -- plus an unlockable scenario, "No W?ay Out," featuring the blink-and-you'll-miss-'em sheriff.

You can play the first three seven-minute-or-so modes in any order, though I'd highly recommend swallowing your pride and using the "training" setting to get your footing and learn the ideal routes. The Ghost Survivors' default diff??iculty leaves little ro?om for error, and as a result, it's easy to bounce off.

There are three new undead variants, each requiring slightly different tactics. Poisonous zombies are best shot from a distance or outright avoided. Armored enemies usually have a vulnerable leg or arm. And the spookiest of all, the melted-looking creeps, require serious firepower to put down. Th??e Ghost Survivors also includes a bit of Mr. X and lickers so, yeah, it's a party. To stay stocked up, you'll want to find vending machines (which offer a choice between multiple items) and backpack zombies.

I'm not invested in my scores enough to trim down my completion time, but I am super into the idea of unlocking masks for these characters. It's a perfect incentive to strive for improvement. Aside from the tiger mask up top, there are also looks inspired by grotesque enemies including a familiar face from Resident Evil 7. The silly dress-up reminds me of Dead Rising in the best possible way.

The fourth and final mode places you in the sheriff's shoes, and you aren't getting out of the gas station from RE2's intro sequence until you've offed one-hundred unlucky undead. Infinite h??andgun ammo is reassuring at first, but this close-quarters sur?vival arena doesn't offer much breathing room.

I wouldn't have been super impressed with The Ghost Survivors had it been paid DLC, but as a free post-launch extra, it hits the spot. It's more approachable than The 4th Survivor, so even if you aren't one for Resident Evil's more frantic arcade-like offerings??, it??'s worth half an hour of your weekend.

Don't forget to nab the '98 costumes too

We're closing out the week with a big day for Resident Evil 2 fans. Capcom has released classic 1998 costumes for Leon and Claire, which is grounds for even more playthroughs of the main story. There's also The Ghost Survivors, a set of non-canon alternate scenarios exploring what could've happened to characters l?ike the gun shop owner and the mayor's daughter if ?only luck had been on their side.

This stuff is out n??ow, but if you're like me and can't play until tonight, take ?a peek at the trailer:

I'll have to spend the rest of the day mentally preparing to?? stare down a small army of lickers.

To be clear, The Ghost Survivors is akin to The 4th Survivor, a short survival ga??untlet with Hunk. Don't go in expecting much in the way of story revelations or anything too substantial. These? are extras.

As a quick aside, if you're going for the retro look, consider springing for Resident Evil 2's "Original Ver. Soundtrack Swap" DLC. It's three bucks (if you buy it piecemeal) and it is eerie in ??all?? the right ways.
