Capcom is back with another VR mode, and this time it's for Resident Evil 4 Remake. That was enough for me to dust off my PS VR2 to see whether I’d be treated to an experience as good as Resident Evil Village’s phenomenal VR mode.

As is the case with Resident Evil Village, the VR mode is only available for the main story of RE4 Remake, but this time around you have trophies! I've thoroughly enjoyed my time playing RE 4 virtually so far, and while I've yet to complete the lengthy campaign, there are so many epic encounters ?I'm lo?oking forward to tackling in VR.

Horror at its most beautiful

RE Village was a graphical showcase for Sony's headset. It's not the best-looking game on PS VR2, but it's definitely in the same playing field as titles like Horizon: Call of the Mountain when it comes to visuals. Capcom has managed to exceed itself with RE 4's VR mode??, which se?rves up a gorgeously horrifying world with a level of sharpness that few games on the headset have managed.

The blurriness that tends to plague VR games is rarely seen, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the world you've been warped into. RE 4 has never terrified me nearly as much as its predecessors, but that changes drastically when I'm thrust into VR. Suddenly, being surrounded by enemies feels like?? a life-or-death experience that has my heart hyperactive and occasionally, even my hands trembling.

Don't exp?ect the same graphical quality as the flatscreen mode, but prepare for a visual feast. During my first gameplay session, multiple times I stopped to just appreciate my surroundings after dealing with the enemies. The visuals are complemented by audio that never lets up when it comes to raising the hairs on the back of my neck.

The 3D audio comes in handy in VR, as it's accurate enough?? to use sound alone to determine which direction danger's coming from - all I had to do was follow the demented rambling from the Las Plagas-infected foes.

Fun with guns

Undoubtedly, the best part of the game is the gunplay. It's so satisfying. Before blasting baddies, you have to go through the motions of ejecting your empty magazine, reaching into your pouch for a new one, loading it, and cocking your firearm. It's a lengthy process that takes some getting used to before you can do it automatically under the most stressful of situations, but it adds an exhilarating layer of gameplay that even returning players can enjoy, not unlike RE 4’s VR version on Oculusheadset

The various guns behave and function differently, which is forcing me to practice and gain experience with every firearm. For example, pistols require a magazine change while shotguns force me to load shells individually instead. Shotguns take longer to prepare, but it's wor?th it when I can finally pum?p and blast my way through a mob.

If any of this sounds overwhelming, don’t fret. The game does offer a tutorial at the beginning, and ?you have the option to simplify reloading in the settings menu.

Action that's accessible

VR can be a tricky thing to get right, not least of all because of the variety of settings necessary to accommodate different people’s needs. For the most part, RE 4 VR does a great job i??n this department, allowing you to fine-tune several aspects of the game.

I hadn't used Sony's headset in ag?es, so I had lost ?my VR legs, and it didn't take me long to feel nausea after jumping into the game. Fortunately, there are settings to help mitigate motion sickness, including snap-turning. There are also a few accessibility settings, including the ability to switch to left-handed mode if that's the way you roll.

The only complaint I have on this front is that the HUD can be somewhat intrusive. You can switch it off completely, but then you can’t spot what objects in your environment can be interacted with. Turn it on, and you? can switch off a lot of unnecessary junk, except for that cursed ammo indicator.

I really don’t like the fact that my weapons have a floating HUD element telling me how much ammo I have left. Let me find it out the hard way when I hear that dreaded click instead of a bang.

Inconsistent immersion

Both RE 4 and RE Village prove that Capcom has what it takes to craft some of the scariest VR titles possible. However,?? both games are also deeply flawed due to their flatscreen origins.

It feels a bit deceptive to call Resident Evil 4 Remake’s VR mode a first-person experience bec?ause it deviates from the perspective so often. It’s not just a matter of cutscenes being in the third-person. The problem is that the switch from first to third-person occurs at some of the most inopportune moments, including during combat.

Attempt to melee an injured foe, and you’ll see Leon pull off his cool kick in third-person. It’s so immersion-breaking that I try to avoid melee moves as much as possible. You run into the same problem when interacting with ??the environment. You can’t just open shelves, and instead, you have to press X. This feels really off in VR where the desire is strong to see just how much you can naturally interact with everything.

The VR mode is an amazing offering from Capcom, and it's made more impressive by the fact that it’s a free download for anyone who already has the base game. If you own RE 4 Remake, and a PS VR2,?? this is an experienc?e that should not be missed.

Are you one of the rare few who haven't played this classic yet? It'll be an exhilarating adventure to try virtually first, and I envy you. Nevertheless, be aware that it's not flawless, and it constantly reminds you that you'r?e dealing with VR slapped onto a title that's flatscreen at heart.

Resident Evil 4 received a remake in March 2023 which brought Leon’s classic adventure to modern consoles. As was the case with Resident Evil 7 and Village, Capcom has promised a VR mode for the remake. We’ll get to see a little more of the VR mode at the upc??om??ing Tokyo Game Show, which kicks off on September 21 and runs until September 24.

Resident Evil 4 isn’t the only Capcom game that’ll be making an appearance. The company also lists Street Fighter 6, Exoprimal, Monster Hunter Now, and the Ace Attorney trilogy on its official webpage outlining its Tokyo Ga?me Show plans.

Capcom has big plans for the Tokyo Game Show 2023

Capcom will have its own booth at the Tokyo Game Sh??ow where attendees will have the chance to try out some of the company’s latest games. The event will also feature the return of the Resident Evil airsoft shooting range in collaboration with Tokyo Marui. For those who can’t make it, there’ll?? be a prerecorded stream which’ll share some of Capcom’s biggest news. It airs on September 21 at 07:00 AM PDT.

We received our first teaser for Resident Evil 4’s VR mode during the May PlayStation showcase, though not much was revealed. We'll hopefully see a few more details this time around, including whether game modes outside of the main campaign will also receive the VR tr?eatment.

The company will have to put on a good show if it hopes to stand out, as several other gaming?? giants have confirmed that they’ll be showing up, including Bandai Namco and Square Enix. Sony will also be there, though?? they’ll only be exhibiting indie titles.

You can almost feel the chainsaw on your eyes

We are a sliver under a month away from the launch of Resident Evil 4, easily one of the most highly anticipated remakes of all time And? for those of you who want a truly immersive experience with the Los Illuminados, Capcom is developi?ng an immersive virtual reality experience for the PS5 edition and its related PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR 2) hardware.

"VR mode for Resident Evil 4 has started development! Stay tuned for more details!reads a new tweet from the Japanese Resident Evil Twitter account, before later adding "The VR mode of Resident Evil 4 will be distr??ibuted as free DLC for PlayStation5 / PlayStation VR 2??."

//twitter.com/BIO_OFFICIAL/status/162830961484?3559937??s=20

One can only assume that the new mode for Resident Evil 4 will see players go face-to-face with some of the terrifying mutants of the iconic survival horror title, which first freaked out video game fans the world over on its initial release, way back in 2005. If you ever fancied looking one of the horrifying Regenerat?ors, dead in th?e eye in full 3D, then you'll soon have the opportunity.

Also, what's wrong with you?

Resident Evil 4 VR will not be the only virtual reality experience coming to the Capcom franchise this year, as Resident Evil Village is receiving its own virtual reality equivalent today on PlayStation 5. Resident Evil Village VR lets players step into the shoes of Ethan Winters as he goes toe-to-toe with terrifying characters such as Heisenberg, Lady Dimitrescu, and, of course, that baby. Yikes.

Resident Evil 4 launches Ma????rch 24 on PlayStation, PC, and Xbox Series X.

It's like I'm really there.

The Oculus Quest line of standalone virtual reality head-mounted displays has been around for three years now. As one of the only people in my friend group who has a Quest 2, I still get the same exact question every time I bring it up: "Are there any good games on there?" The answer, of course, is yes. There are plenty of great games on the Quest 2. However, there are also plenty of bad games on the Quest 2, and separating the wheat f??rom the chaff can b??e a bit of a challenge.

Virtual reality is still a bit of a niche market, so it's tough to get a sense of which VR games are actually worth playing. Since so much discussion is centered on PC VR, it can be even tougher to figure out which Quest 2 games deserve your attention. I've been tooling with this thing for a couple of years now, and I'm pretty happy with this list of five, but it's by no means definitive. There are a lot of great games on Quest 2, and I've excluded some for reasons that are, quite honestly, a little silly. That's the cost of whittling a list down to five, but it's als?o a good reason to explore other corners of the platform's library. After you've played these five, of course.

A screenshot of Beat Saber. Two lightsabers slashing colored blocks.

5. Beat Saber

This one is kind of a free space. If you've played one game on Quest 2, it's probably Beat Saber. It's the game that Quest 2 owners love to bring out to demonstrate the potential of the hardware to neophytes, and it's the game that most non-VR people I've talked to mention as soon as I bring up VR. There's a good reason for that: Beat Saber rules.

Beat Saber is a fairly simple rhythm game. You simply stand in place and swing two copyright-proof things that look like lightsabers but definitely aren't lightsabers to the beat. Beat Saber's simplicity is its secret sauce - it's?? readable and immediately ??playable for everyone, regardless of their level of VR literacy, and it makes excellent use of the Quest 2's limited hardware.

4. Superhot VR

Superhot has been a favorite game of mine ever since the original Game Jam prototype was released in 2013. It's got a pretty straightforward conceit: it's a first-person shooter where time only moves when you move. That means moving slowly allows you to pul?l off incredibly slick bullet-time stunts, while moving quickly turns the game into a hectic first-person bullet hell.

Superhot is always great, but it's at its greatest in VR. Having full control over your body makes the game feel even more like an incredible action movie. Like Beat Saber, the simplistic graphics and limited use of color provide full immersion without pushing the ha?rdware beyond its limits??.

3. Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted

Listen, I get it. It's 2022. You're tired of Five Nights at Freddy's. But I really need you to hear me out on this one - Five Nights at Freddy's: Help Wanted is great. The Five Nights at Freddy's formula is kind of perfect for virtual real?ity. The first three games in the series are all about sitting still in an unsettling environment. The control scheme is in??credibly simple and the scares are ultra-effective.

Help Wanted lovingly recreates all three of those original games, and it also includes some neat mini games based on later entries in the series. It doesn't reinvent the wheel by any means, but it's still a pretty scary wheel, and it's made even scarier when you're right in the middle of it. If nothing else, Help Wanted is a great way to remember why everyone was so entranced by FNaF in the first place.

2. VRChat

Is VRChat a game? Kind of! It's more like a virtual reality Roblox, a platform for hobby developers to deliver a whole bunch of miniature games of their own. It's also a virtual reality social media platform, and one of the only places where you can watch Rei Ayanami and Pickle Rick furiously debate over the best Shrek movie. It's an outlet for creative expression in the absolute rawest sense. Everyone is exactly who they want to be in VRChat, for better and for worse.

For some people, VRChat will be unbearably annoying. It doesn't look very good, and its player base is roughly 75% young children who haven't learne??d mic etiquette just yet. Still, there's nothing else quite like it, and it's absolutely worth trying at least once. Who knows? maybe you'll find that SSJ3 Goku avatar that makes th??e whole thing click.

1. Resident Evil 4

What is there to say about Resident Evil 4? It's Resident Evil 4. It's one of the greatest games ever made, and absolutely nothing has been lost in the transition to virtual reality. In fact, there's a very real case to be made that Resident Evil 4 in virtual reality is the best version of Resident Evil 4 ever made.

Resident Evil 4 fans have extolled the virtues of the Nintendo Wii version of the game for years. RE4 just feels right with a light gun. Now imagine, if you will, playing the Wii version of Resident Evil 4... but in virtual reality. It's honestly a pretty breathtaking experience. For me, as a devout Resident Evil 4 enjoyer who owns the game four times over, it's an incredible way to recontextualize ????an experience I've had more times than I can count.

For a newcomer, it's probably the most accessible and immediately enjoyable version of the game. If I could install one game on every single Quest 2, it would be this one. It's the perfect version of an already perfect game, and it's?? hands down the best experience you can have on the platform.

Once upon a time there was a contest guy named Wes. Wes liked to give out games basically every day of the week, and loved ensuring the fine readers of Destructoid paid for as few games as possible. Well, wouldn't you know it, one day Wes' ??sordid past finally caught up with him, resulting in him spending seven months in a workers' prison in central Monta?na, where he could no longer give free games away.

Well, I just got released yesterday, and I'm back on my bullshit! I wrestled a bear (name was Russell, he was a truck driver) for some Resident Evil 4 VR keys for Oculus Ques?t 2, and now I'm desperate to give them away. Please take one. Please?

As one of the highest-rated action/survival horror games of all time, Resident Evil 4 needs little introduction. Hell, it's followed us around for three console generations now, and will likely show up for a fourth at any moment. Well, now it's time to have your date with save the President's ?daug??hter again -- this time in virtual reality! Get all up in Leon Kennedy as he traipses through the European countryside blasting away weirdo bag-heads with chainsaws, giant mechanical little people, and horrifying lake monsters, all the while escorting the incorrigible Ashley Graham.

But seriousl??y, Del Lago is like the scariest thing ever and I'm terrified to go through that in VR.

Experience Resident Evil 4 like never before thanks to Oculus Quest 2, the premier way to experience virtual reality. Leon S. Kennedy isn't hampered by wires, which means neither are you with this state-of-the-art wireless headset. Look down to see your inventory, throw grenades like you're in a World War II trench, and shoot harpoons at that horrible sea-beast all without tripping all over yourself in the process. This is the definitive way to play RE4.

Now how's about putting RE5 in VR? It's my favorite RE game and no, I'm not afraid to admit that.

Surviving the village sequence, a funny egg toss, a run-in with a Regenerator, and more RE4 VR clips

To a certain extent, I was perfectly fine living in the land of blissful ignorance with respect to Resident Evil 4 VR. But after hearing such great things a?bout it and seeing it in action with clips that really show off the heightened sense of player freedom I??'m starting to visualize a few hundred dollars vanishing from my bank account in the near future.

First up, the iconic village. This clip from EchoSmoker captures the adrenaline-pumping scramble of being cornered by a group with a chainsaw in the mix, and it??'s so sty?lish.

Basically, all of the wacky player antics that make Resident Evil 4 such a blast to replay year after year also translate super well to VR (courtesy of developer Armature Studio).

Classic tricks like the flash grenade birdpocalypse still work, and it's fun to see them from an up-close-and-personal perspectiv??e. I'm sure? VR players will quickly figure out new tactics, too. (It's a shame Mercenaries mode didn't make the cut; think of that skill ceiling.)

Can I hold out for a non-Oculus Quest 2 version of Resident Evil 4 VR? I won't be shocked if it's a permanent exclusive, but I sure would be disappointed by that turn of events. Much like Half-Life: Alyx and even Resident Evil 7 before it, this game is too great to?? be confined anywhere it deserves a spo??t in every virtual-reality ecosystem that can support it.

Leon's got a new watch

Earlier this month, Capcom announced Resident Evil 4 would be coming to virtual reality via the Oculus Quest 2. During today'?s ??Oculus Gaming Showcase, the VR company showed more of how Leon's adventure is being turned into a first-person VR experience.

The most obvious change is that you're moving around in first-person, with the Touch controllers acting as your mode of interaction. The analog stick moves you around, but development studio Armature has added an upper-body rig on top of Leon to work movement in with the Touch controllers, and there's support for both teleportation and room-scale movement options. The Oculus blog says you can play through the whole game co?mfortably seated, if you'd like.

There'??s also a lot of remastered art. Over 4,500 textures have either been repainted or had their resolution bumped up, character animations have been converted over to Unreal Engine 4, and cutscenes will be shown in their original format.

Overall, the VR version is looking even more solid than it did during last week's showcase. You can see more of it in the above video starting around the 21:30 mark, including a wild Pokédex-looking device and Leon's sick health-tracking watch. Considering how much of a different experience VR made for playing through Resident Evil 7, playing through the village, castle, and more in Resident Evil 4's VR adaptation could be pretty rad when it goes l?ive later this year.

It's coming to Oculus Quest 2

Resident Evil 4 is once again being "enhanc??ed for a modern audience." While remake talk will have to wait for another day, Capcom did announce a VR ve?rsion of the endlessly replayable horror-action romp.

Resident Evil 4 VR is a collaboration between Capcom, Oculus Studios, and Armature Studio for the Oculus Quest 2. The early footage looks promising and pretty fleshed-out — Leon is shown dual-wielding a pistol a??nd knife, he fully interacts with a typewriter one key at a time, and the inventory management screen isn't just a flat menu. I'm super hopeful about this conversion to VR.

The footage shown so far looked fun enough, but what about those qui?ck-time events? We'll see.

Apart from these screengrabs, you can also see Resident Evil 4 VR in action at this time stamp.

More info will be shared on April 21 at 3:00 p.m. Pacific at the Oculus Gaming Showcase. For now, the official line is "O??culus Quest 2" — no mention of other platforms or eve??n the original Quest model.
