Book 'em, Danno!

Developer Vblank has announced that Shakedown Hawaii, follow-up to Retro City Rampage, will be releasing in just a few short weeks on May 7, 2019. Coming to PC (via Epic Games Store), PS4, Switch, and Vita (!), the game will run you $19.99 when it comes out. A 3DS version is? in the works, though it needs more time in the oven. It will support both the original and New 3DS models, likely with some visual improvements for the upgraded kit.

A physical version for Vita (limited to 4,800 units) will be available for $29.99 with pre-orders beginning May 3, 2019, on Vblank's website. If you're also in the market for a copy of Retro City Rampage, the Vita version will be getting one final physical print run from Vblank. Reser??vations for that will begin tomorrow, April 24, over on the official website.

Pre-orders open soon for run of 3000 copies

While the PlayStation Vita has moved into its twilight days, there are still surprise physical releases popping up for the Sony handheld. Take for example Retro City Rampage DX, which is to see a limited edition run of 3000 copies, via publisher Vblank Entertainment.

Originally released for Nintendo 3DS and Switch in 2014 and 2017 respectively, Retro City Rampage DX is an enhanced version of the original Retro City Rampage, which - somewhat unbelievably - launched way back on PC in 2012,? before be??ing ported to almost every platform under the sun.

Retro City Rampage is a chaotic and colourful action title, reminiscent of the original Grand Theft Auto titles, that is so indulgently chock-full of references, in-jokes and callbacks to popular culture that even Ready Player One is like "Easy the?re, fella". Players guide a young ?thug through a series of missions, guided by Emmet Brown wannabee Doc Choc.

The PS Vita physical edition will be made available for pre-order on Wednesday, April 24 at 10:00 PT / 13:00 ET over at the Vblank Entertainment store. Previously released physical eds on PS4 and Switch sold out in double-quick time, so make sure you set your watch if you hope to bag one of the?? 3000 copies up for grabs.

Retro City Rampage is available now on PS4, PS Vita, PC, Nintend??o 3DS, Switch and Android and iO??S devices.

Possibly next week

Retro City Rampage, which has released on nearly everything under the sun, including the Wii U when the creator said it would probably be a loss, is coming to Switch. VblankEntertainment announced that the DX version, which debuted with the 3DS, shou??ld?? arrive on the Switch eShop as soon as "next week."

The details are still being worked out, and it'll possibly launch "the week after" if issues arise, but it seems like it's basically d?one. New tweaks include a "slightly more stylish score display," improved controls/lock-o?n, and alterations to the game's difficulty.

I'm not sure if I need to buy it yet again, but I'll be there for Shakedown Hawaii.

It's $4.99

Surprise! Developer Vblank Entertainment sent me over a note this morning that Retro City Rampage DX was stealth launched on iOS devices this morning. It features controller support as wel??l as touch controls, and runs on everything iOS 6.0 or above. Vblank notes that nothing was removed, and every minigame is?? still intact. Update 1.01, which adds more precise swimming controls, is already on the way.

I gave the port a go, and was rather ??surprised with how well it operated, even without a controller. There's a virtual pad for movement on the left, and buttons will pop up on the right with contextual actions (like hijacking a car, shooting, or jumping) when needed. They're all clear and well animated, and the vehicular controls ar?e precise.

Again, this is the same version as the original, including all of the fixins, and the (disclosure!) Destructoid cameos. You can pick it up here for $4.99.

Coming soon in North America

If you own Retro City Rampage DX on the 3DS, you should have an update ready for you now in Europe, and "soon" in North America. The delay for the lat?ter is due to a Nintendo certification process that isn't quite complete yet.

The update will improve performance by "unlocking" the power of the new CPU, which enhances screen effects, fast-forwarding, and turbo mode, in addition to C-Stick support.? It's said to b??e on par with the console versions now with everything in tow. If you don't own a New 3Ds you'll still get some enhancements, including a more consistent framerate.

Developer Brian Provinciano notes that he loves the 3DS as?? a platform, and would develop another game?? for it.

WiiWare is even getting an update

In a move that could be considered one of the biggest mass updates in recent memory, Retro City Rampage creator Brian Provinciano has announced that every version of the game will be updated to its improved DX version. That includes the Xbox 360, PC, Mac, PS3, Vita, and ev??en the dead WiiWare platform.

The PlayStation edition will now be Cross-Buy between the PS3, Vita, and PS4 with Cross-Save in tow. ??The entire game has been reworked in addition to extra checkpoints and visual options, so definitely check it out if you couldn't get into it before.

It'll drop on Novemb??er 11th for $9.99, or as the aforementione??d update.

Whenever it comes along

Retro City Rampage is a pretty polarizing game around these parts, but I found myself really digging it, especially the well-crafted 3DS port. For everyone who still plays it off and on, you might be happy to know that creator Brian Provinciano will be supporting the game going forward, even when the New 3DS drops.

When asked on Twitter, Provinciano stated that the game will get an update to accommodate  the 3DS' added buttons -- which may include the two triggers and the extra thumbstick nub...thing. In the past, he claimed that he wasn't happy with how the Circle Pad Pro turned out, and didn't add support to t??he game -- specifically, "it made it harder to reach the touch screen for weapons, making it awkward to switch between sho??oting and jumping."

If you're still tinkering with Retro City Rampage, developer Brian Provinciano has provided a world map for fans to print and take a look at, which includes every interior area in the game. He also provided a crazy update that I just can't believe. You re?member how WiiWare had this stupid system that required developers to hit a certain "threshol??d" before it paid out?

Well apparently Retro City Rampage still hasn't hit that threshold as of this month! Brian notes plainly, "Unfortunately, the WiiWare version hasn't done so well. While I knew the odds of releasing on this platform were stacked against me, it was a labor of love and I did it to keep my word, and for the fans. The challenge th??ough, is that it hasn't made a cent in revenue yet, due to the WiiWare sales threshold." Although he did enter fairly late into the game mostly for fans, I'm glad that system is dead and gone for 3DS and Wii U.

I know people are generally polarized when it comes to this game, but I heartily enjoyed it. It's a good love letter to the 90s as well as a functional classic GTA top-down game.

Sounds like the extra work was worth it

When Retro City Rampage was released last year, developer Brian Provinciano was inundated with requests to put the game on the 3DS. It di??dn't look likely at first. Brian was already tackling the job of building the game on PC, Wii, Xbox 360, PS?3, and PS Vita pretty much on his own. Dealing with all those bugs and player complaints must have been horrific. To put the game on the 3DS as well would involve rebuilding many aspects of it from the ground up, sort out the smaller screen size and resolution, and bunch of other problems. It was easy to forgive Brian for wanting to just move on.

Then again, Brian is the kind of guy who was ambitious (and/or self destructive) enough to dedicate much of his adult life to the development of Retro City Rampage in the first place. Hearing that he'd put in the extra months of work to deliver the game on the 3DS didn't come as a huge of a surprise. More surprising was the news that the game has already gone on to bring in more money on the 3DS than it did on the Xbox 360, despite an approximate 12 month head start on the Microsoft's highly successful console. Sounds like t??he 3DS and Brian's brand of game design may be a pretty good fit.

Brian just released a new update for the game that offers some dramatic additions and changes. If you're more inclined to play on PC, you can get a Steam code for Retro City Rampage and Gordon Midwood's Derrick the Deathfin on the Sup Holmes kickstarter right meow. You'll also get a c??omic book I drew and maybe an Inhumanoid, so that's cool too.

Stuff is happening!

First, the sad news-- Sunday's episode with Chris Seavor was the final Sup, Holmes? on Dtoid's Twitch/YouTube channel. The glad news? We launched a Kickstarter for the show yesterday, and?? due to ??overwhelming support, we were fully funded in less than 12 hours. Holy smokes.

We've still got to work out the details of the stretch goals, so chime in if you have ideas for things you'd like to see. A new animated intro, a Sup, Holmes? album featuring your favorite game music artists, a Sup, Holmes? Game Jam with your favorite developers, and a dedicated website (complete with an advice column) are just a few of the ideas we're hoping to put together. If you're a dev??eloper or musical artist and you'd like to get inv??olved in any of that, let us know.

In the meantime, Brian Provinciano of VBlank Entertainment has offered to donate a Steam code for Retro City Rampage to everyone who backs at the $15 tier and higher. Brian was a part of the show from the very start, so it's fitting to have him be an integral part of its reboot. You can bet your butts that we'll have him on the show again as soon as he's got a new game to talk about. Speaking of which, past and future reruns of the show will appear on this Youtube channel? going forward, so re-calibrate your subscriptions accordingly.

Thanks again to Dtoid for helping to create the show, giving it a home for the past two years, and to all the people who've backed us so far. We're going to do our best to give yo?u your money's worth.

Coming soon: Garages!

Retro City Rampage: DX (the 3DS port) has been called the definitive version of the game, and according to developer Brian Provinciano, it's "doing great". Considering that the game had already been out for a while, it wasn't a sure thing that it would do well on the 3DS, but apparently that hasn't been a problem. It will be interesting to see if it surpasses the PSN port, which is the best selling version to date. Brian's guess is that a lot of people played the game on the Vita. Seems like Retro City Rampage is the kind of game people want on a handheld.

Brian also made a point to say that he'd "love to do another 3DS game", which sounds promising. Before? he gets on that, he's got to fini?sh the new update for the game, which allows you to collect cars and store them in garages. I had no idea that the covered wagon was so lethal...

Retro GTA action comes to the 3DS

Retro City Rampage has hit the 3DS in the form of a DX version, which brings a few upgrades with it. Now, you may have already played Rampage on multiple platforms -- so what's ??better about this one?  Well, you're getting all the patches that the previous iterations have? obtained, as well as a new method of ditching the police (clearing the screen), a new drive camera, new control options (jumping and shooting), streamlined missions, and most importantly, a bottom map screen.

Gameplay-wise more checkpoints have been added, as well as a balanced difficulty and a generally better mission flow. As someone who has beaten the game previously, I noticed these upgrades almost immediately, though it's not a perfect port as there are a few limitations involved. Circle Pad Pro support has oddly been left out in favor of a more responsive control scheme -- and one wonders why it couldn't have simply been an option for those who prefer it. The lack of twin-stick shooting doesn't ruin the game a??t all as it's easy enough to pick up the L button free-aim system, but it would have been appreciated.

To compensate for the smaller viewing area, developer Brian Provinciano created a "dynamic" camera that pans ahead while driving. While the 3DS is technically less sharpe?r-looking than the Vita?? version, the upgrades add to the package and ultimately take precedent over visuals for me.

It's not flawless, but Retro City Rampage DX feels in its natural habitat on the 3DS -- a platform that keeps growing and growing every month. ?If you're looking for an open-world game to just screw around in, thi??s is it.

Big changes for the little game that could

Despite that it was coded by just one guy, Retro City Rampage was made available for just about every platform imaginable (PS3, Xbox 360, Wii, PS Vita, PC), except for the 3DS. That's about to change tomorrow when the comedy action open world crime fantasy sees release on Nintendo's handheld under the moniker Retro City Rampage DX

I just downloaded the game and so far, it's my favorite rendition yet. The base game is the same, but the camera is zoomed in and dynamic, making for a very different feeling. NES Remix showed us how different it is to play 2D games like Balloon Fight and Mario Bros. with a zoomed out camera. It changes how much visual information you take in and when you absorb it, which can have a huge effect on your overall experience. Those of you who had a tough time getting into Retro City Rampage before might find that this enhanced 3DS port is just what you needed. If you've already got the game and love it as-is??, then this port may be largely unnecessary for you, but it's the version I'll likely be recommending to people from here on out.

RCR has had a really interesting development cycle, mostly due to creator Brian Provinciano's complete openness on the process. From detailing his struggles with Microsoft to the Wii version essentially being a "$20,000 gift for fans," his experiences?? have cer?tainly shed some light on select portions of the indie development process as a whole.

Ultra-violent next gen madness crushed pixels on 3DS HARD

Retro City Rampage is coming to the 3DS in Q1 2014 for the low, low price of $9.99 in North America, the UK, Australia, and New Zeland. That's a heck of a bargain for a game with this much content. A friend of mine once described Retro City Rampage as Warioware crossed with classic GTA. Sou??nds like about as good of a fit for the 3DS install base as you could ask for.??

It took a huge amount of work to get Retro City Rampage on the 3DS, but VBlank has also found the time to update the PC version of the game, allowing for mouse and PS4 controller ?support and other upgrades. On top of all that, VBlank has also given us all permission to monetize our  Lets Plays of Retro City Rampage without risk of copyright claim?s from Youtube.

Brian Provinciano is a real sugarbear.

Look for it at PAX Prime

Considering all of the other platforms Retro City Rampage is available on, it only seemed like ??a matter of time before it would end up on 3DS. In a list of games playable next week at PAX Prime, Nintendo outed the existence of Vblank Entertainment's upcoming handheld port. Oh you.

Now that the info's out, designer Brian Provinciano graciously shared the first images of the new version. The bottom screen will be home to your? score, the minimap, and other HUD elements as well as dialog where applicable. If you haven't already bought the game multiple times, this will more than likely be a nice choice for double dipping.

Oh, and that Jim Sterling guy is pretty neat, too

According to Retro City Rampage's top fifty character styles, people love rocking that robot look. Mr. Destructoid is the second most popular character portrait on PS3/PS? Vita, and the ??third most popular on PC!

In order to unlock the Mr. D character style, you must travel to MJ's Face R Us in the Northwestern sector of the map, and select t??he coupon code rather than pony up cash for a new look. Enter the code, "DTOID," and you can get your own robot face! You'll also get access to a bunch of other Destructoid personnel, including Jonathan Hol?mes, Conrad Zimmerman, and that Hamza guy.

Oh, you c??an also unlock me, which is cool, b??ecause I made it into the top fifty styles on PC. I'm down there are number 43! Hey, it's better than nothing.

I heard that there Retro City Rampage was a pretty good game.

The retro gaming-inspired title is reduced on Steam today

Retro City Rampage was released on almost every system possible last year but the PC version is getting a lot of love today. Not only is it reduced by 75% to just £2.99/$3.74 in ??Steam's Daily Deal, developer Brian Provinciano has also updated the PC version with a new enhanced gra??phics mode and mod support.

While the new graphics mod?e doesn't drastically change the look of th??e game, the addition of real-time shadows and doubling the colors on-screen are nice touches. The new modding tools look to be a fun addition letting players create new vehicles, characters, and fonts.

It'll be fun to see what retro-game-inspired concepts gamers come up with using these new tools. It seems like if you've been holding off on purchasing Retro City Rampage, then now's the time to take the plunge.

Developer says Microsoft cancelled his game and then released it at wrong price

After a shaky relationship that put his career and game on the line, Retro City Rampage developer Brian Provinciano joins Jonathan Blow and Team Meat in talking mess about Microsoft.

After developing RCR for over four years, Microsoft cancelled the Xbox Live Arcade release due to Provinciano publicly stating his issues with the process, Provinciano told Wired. Perhaps this was written in some contract and Microso??ft wasn't out of line, but that is much harder to hold on to after what came next.

Provinciano says Microso?ft made him go through a long approvals process to get the game back in the pipeline, what followed was an extra six months of negotiations and Microsoft tasked him with hunting down an outside publisher. Not exactly a warm relationship but that's the game industry. It's the last part that is the most damning: When Microsoft released the game, they priced it at $10 instead of $15. Provinciano was told this was a mistake.

On a po?sitive note, Provinciano has found a friend in Sony and PlayStation Network: “Sony’s been incredibly supportive and promoted the game very well. It’s received a generous amount ?of promotion at no cost to me, from [advertisements] on the PS Store to events such as E3 and even having it playable on kiosks at every Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop, Target and Future Shop across North America.”

He says working with Sony is a ??"coffee shop chat,"? while dealing with Microsoft feels like an "intimidating corporate vibe".

I don't doubt that Microsoft and Sony want their indie developers to be happy and find success, but after hearing such negative accounts from succes?sful indie developers -- those who have a voice because they managed to reach so many people with their games -- makes me think Microsoft isn't putting the right people in place. Artists often get the short end of the stick when dealing with backers and publishers, but Microsoft sound like bullies, i??n this relationship.

One has ?to wonder what other horror stories are out there from developers that are afraid to speak up, because they have yet to find success to fall back on. Whatever the case, Microsoft has a long way to go in buttering up indie developers, who will only increase in value and reach with the next generation of consoles.

Brian Provinciano breaks it down

Retro City Rampage was in development for over six years, costing thousands of dollars and sleepless nights to develop. Brian Provinciano, the creator of the game, is finally getting a return on his investment. You may see some "exact" numbers elsewhere on the internet, but according to Brian, those figures aren't 100% accurate.

We do know that the game has moved about 100,000 units acro?ss the five platforms where it's currently available, with the most profits coming from PSN and PC. XBLA came in third, which comes as a disappointment. Provinciano?? reportedly would have "skipped" the platform if he knew then what he knows now.

WiiWare came in last place, which is also disappointing, but not all that surprising. According to Provinciano "It hasn't sold anywhere near 5,000 units on WiiWare. It has, in fact, sold only about 25% of the threshold". That means that until the game meets the mysterious WiiWare threshold, Brian wont get a penny from the WiiWare release. The good news is, if and when the game does meet the threshold, Brian will receive royalties to every unit of the game sold, including the pre-threshold sales.

If you've got a Wii or Wii U and nothing to play on it, why not get Retro City Rampage. It's $5 cheaper than on other platforms, and comes with special ROM version of the game that's not available on other consoles. Also, I'm in the game, which is pretty neat. All narcissism aside, it would be nice to see the WiiWare version at least hit the threshold so Brian could start to make back some of the $20K it cost to develop.

Brian Provinciano doesn't expect to profit from WiiWare release

Brian Provinciano wanted to keep his word. That is the reason Retro City Rampage released on WiiWare earlier this week. Its deve?loper has no expectation of turning a pr?ofit on the platform, calling the move a "$20,000 gift to fans."

"It’s only being released as fan service," Provinciano told Nintendolife in a recent interview. "H??ad I not done the WiiWare version, I could’ve saved around $20,000."

The Wii may have an incredibly large install base, but WiiWare never really panned out. Despite the service being significantly less popular than Nintendo had expected, the platform holder continues to set quotas on new releases??. If games don't sell enough copies, the developer doesn't see a cent.

Retro City Rampage may yet surpass Nintendo's sales threshold, but that isn't the only issue at play. Provinciano wound up spending a significant portion of his budget on account of an office space requirement. He could have easily cut co?sts by working from home had the measure not been in place.

Nintendo has taken feedback to heart in an effort to improve the situation. As a result, these policies have changed with the release of the Wii U and 3DS. Still, things look grim for WiiWare going forward. Retro City Rampage could very wel?l wind up bei??ng the last of its kind.

Best week ever?

This week's Nintendo Download has something for just about everyone. Bit.Trip Presents Runner2 is fantastic and it's available now via the Wii U eShop. Also on the console side of things, Retro City Rampage has arr??i?ved on WiiWare at long last. Yes, WiiWare. Remember when that was a thing?

Over on the 3DS, new arrivals include Etrian Odyssey IV, Coaster Creator 3D, and Mahjong Mysteries: Ancient Athena. Fire Emblem Awakening's Champions of Yore 1 DLC is still free for the time being. Make sure to grab that before it disappears on March 6. Also from Fire Emblem, the second installment in the Golden Pack DLC can be grabbed for just $2.50.

Side-scrolling platformer Fractured Soul is on sale for $7.99. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate has demo. And an abomination called Easter Eggztravaganza has arrived on DSiWare. Because of course i?t has.

If you missed last week's installment, here it is.

Did you know: Brian Provinciano has some killer biceps

Long before Retro City Rampage, developer Brian Provinciano was working on Grand Theftendo, essentially a demake of Grand Theft Auto III. Brian even created his own original Nintendo development kit to make this happen! He would eventually move away from making a little demake stuck within constraints of old hardware, with the result being Retro City Rampage.

With the release of Retro City Rampage tomorrow on WiiWare, Brian is including a special homage to his original concept by including a truly 8-bit version of the game called ROM City Rampage. This additional content will also be released as a free upda??te for the Stea?m version tomorrow.

It's not a simple?? process demaking a game, and this video from Brian shows you how he managed to pull it off.

"Indies should definitely jump onto the PS Vita"

Brian Provinciano, the creative mind behind the wonderful Retro City Rampage?, took to Twi??tter recently and shared how the game has fared on PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam. The clear winner is easily PSN, as RCR has "sold much more on PSN than XBLA and more on PS Vita than even PS3," Brian stated.

This isn't including all the copies of RCR out there through the PlayStation Plus service either, as Brian reiterated that the game has sold more on PSN than XBLA. The reason for the success? Brian states that "Sony promoted the game? incredibly well and Vita players are hungry for games! Make them?? more!"

Brian also shared on Twitter that "indies should definitely jump onto t?he PS Vita" as it's "been the easiest console platform to develop for," with Brian adding that he's developed for just about everything.

The Steam version has done rather well too, as it's "done far better" than the XBLA version. And at the end of the day, it doesn't seem like the XBLA version was worth it. Brian had a hell of a time getting RCR onto the Xbox, as he had to go through "two bouts of 6+ month??s of pitching, paperwork, negotiation" just to get on the service. And in the end, it ended up costing "more to do the XBLA version than all other SKUs combined."

It definitely seems the way to go for indies on console is with the PlayStation now. For those attending GDC 2013 next month, Brian will be giving an extended talk on developing and releasing multi-platform games.

Steam version will also receive prototype via update

Retro City Rampage for WiiWare missed its January release window, but creator Brian Provinciano has set his foot down and stated that the game will finally arrive next week on February 28. RCR's entire development history has been a long string of de??lays, so that's not too surprising. It's just ironic that the Wii was one of the first announced platforms but will end up being the ??last to receive the open-world nostalgia bomb.

But Brian appreciates Wii owners' patience and has decided to make the wait worth their while. In addition to being $10 versus $15 on other platforms as well as compatibility with every single Wii controller configuration, RCR on WiiWare will also include "ROM City Rampage," the game's original prototype ROM before development shifted to from NES to PC. It's essentially Grand Theftendo minus the GTA3 references, and it's 100% NES hardware-accurate!

Those who own RCR on Steam will also have access to "ROM City Rampage," which will be available as a fre??e update day and date with the WiiWare ??version. Sounds like a pretty cool gift! I'm looking forward to checking it out!

Bioshock and Bioshock 2 are getting a big sassy bundle chock full of bonus stuff and Australians are now allowed to have games with boobs and drugs in them. Meanwhile, XBLA is getting Retro City Rampage, PSN is getting Demon's Souls, and Polytron says Fez might be coming to other platforms. Sony patented a thing that could block used games, and used Wii Us may be able to acces?s previous owners' games. Video games, you guys.
