Teyon has announced that RoboCop: Rogue City is getting a content update that will in??clude new game plus, a new difficulty, and an Auto9 skin. It’s available now on PC, with the console ?versions getting it tomorrow.

RoboCop: Rogue City was a pleasant surprise last year. The licensed title went on to win a prestigious “On Zoey’s favorite games of 2023 listaward, one of the most unprestigious honors in the industry. One complaint I did have about the game is that I wanted to play it again after I completed it, but I didn’t?? want to start over from scratch. Now, it’s finally safe to reinstall it now that it will be getting? new game plus.

//youtu.be/Dp7Ep2mfLbs?feature=shared

On top of that, there’s a new, harder difficulty based on Murphy’s frequent utterance, “There Will Be Trouble. Not much more has been revealed about the difficulty, but it’s safe to say it will be more difficult. Personally, ??I like playing as a walking tank, so I’m not sure being squishier will make the game more fun for me.

Finally, the Auto9 pistol gets a new skin once you complete the game. This one is gold plated, which is nicely garish. If you’re not familiar, RoboCop does allow you to pick up discarded gu??ns off of enemies, but Murphy’s main sidearm nev??er stops being effective. Rarely would I use anything else, except when it came to boss battles. However, not once did I stop and think it would be better if it was more ostentatious.

RoboCop: Rogue City is available for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series?? X|S. The new game plus patch has been released on PC, with the console versions getting it tomorrow.

After I played the demo of RoboCop: Rogue City earlier this month, I mentioned I had never watched the RoboCop sequels. Because of recommendations from the comments on that article, I finally watched RoboCop 2, and I’m glad I did.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t as good as the original, but it still had worthwhile parts. The biggest issue, th?ough, is its resolution. It spends a lot of its runtime setting up interesting narrative threads that all begin converging, and then they just wrap it up with ??a boss battle. The end.

RoboCop: Rogue City has a lot of problems, but it also has a great deal of spectacular successes. Chief among them is the fact that it grabs a lot of the dangling threads of RoboCop 2 and finally gives them the resolutions they deserve. There’s bad news, however. The developer, Teyon, also acknowledges and sets up for RoboCop 3, and I c??annot condone anyone legitimizing that mistake. We should erase that mist??ake.

RoboCop: Rogue City (PC [Reviewed], Xbox Series X|S, PS5)
Developer:
Teyon
Publisher: Nacon
Released: November 2, 2023
MSRP: $59.99

As I alluded to, RoboCop: Rogue City is a game that falls smack between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. It ties up loose ends of the former and l??eads into the events of the latter. It involves the eponymous cyborg trying single-handedly hold the city of Detroit together while navigating the fact that his creator, Omni Consumer Products, is the city’s single biggest threat.

If you’re unfamiliar with the series, it’s about police officer Alex Murphy who, after being brutally killed by thugs, is resurrected as an unstoppable cyborg by the morally bankrupt OCP. I respect 1987’s RoboCop for its nuance. At the fo?refront, it's a fun, ??R-Rated movie for the whole family. However, it is an absolute lasagna of themes that include (but are not limited to) what makes us human, the dangers of profit-driven overreach, and the role of law enforcement in modern society. It’s really good stuff, and the dumb name actually plays into its corporate themes.

I’ve always believed that RoboCop, much like Superman, would be a difficult subject to authentically adapt to the video game medium. The character is a garbage truck on legs. He’s practically unstoppable. On t??op of that, his fastest walking speed is “stroll. However, Tey?on looked at this, thought it was awesome, and somehow created an effective game around it.

Testikills

When the guns come out, RoboCop: Rogue City is focused on making you feel every bit as unstoppable as Alex Murphy. There is very little visual feedback to damage, even when a grenade explodes at your feet. The first real warning that your armor is starting to crack hits when you’re? at 20% health.

The Auto9 pistol you are constantly equipped with never runs out of ammo and never stops being your most effective weapon. A headshot always kills unless the enemy is wearing a helmet, and in those cases, you can just shoot them in the dick for an instant takedown. Heads explode like ripe melons, splattering marinara sauce in all directions. If you’re feeling sassy, you can grab thugs and hurl them at their friends or punch them to send them bowling down the corridor. You can grab?? explosive-adjacent items and hurl them into groups of thugs. There is also a slew of skills you can upgrade that give you some truly cruel extra combat abilities.

It’s excessive, and it’s awesome. However, it runs the risk of becoming stale after a while, since challenge is obviously not a primary concern here. Most of your combat options are unnecessary, making RoboCop: Rogue City a clearly dumb shooter.

But rather than take creative liberties with Murphy’s abilities, Teyon took a smarter approach? to the gameplay: it’s not only about shooting.

Guns, guns, guns

RoboCop: Rogue City has more in common with Deus Ex than a standard cinematic FPS. While there are sections of the game where you mostly just blast your way through linear environments, you’re often set free in more open areas? wher??e you spend time investigating, exploring, and completing sidequests.

There’s a lot to like when it comes to Rogue City’s narrative. While it takes a lot of story beats from the movies, it very effectively focuses on Alex Murphy grappling with his identity. A lot of it invol??ves him trying to prove his humanity, in the face of many referring to him as a product facing obsolescence. During this, he grapples with his memories in the form of “glitches, which was touched on in the second movie and then never resolved. As a player, you make choices regarding his association with OCP and who Murphy chooses to affiliate with. You can stick to Alex Murphy’s established character or just go full RoboDick if you’d prefer. There are multiple endings based on your decisions.

It’s perhaps the characters that give the narrative it??s real beating heart. Murphy is explored in depth, but he also interacts with original characters who each have their own arc. Even secondary characters, like many of Murphy’s fellow officers, are given names and personalities. People who you help, even ones that make only minor appearances, often show up later in the game, which gives you a constant feeling of familiarity.

The dialogue is full of the characteristic wit of the films, with satirical scenes like drug dealers explaining supply? and demand to someone undercutting their pricing. There are softer scenes, like when Murphy is assisting a police informant with finding a movie in a rental store. Like the stories on which it is based, there’s a lot to dig into.

RoboCop: Rogue City movie advice

Somewhere, there is a crime happening

However, despite all the ways that Rogue City imp??ressed me, it’s hard to miss how janky the whole product is. Even from a presentation standpoint, it's extremely inconsistent. Dialogue scenes have stilted animations that harken back to games from over a decade ago. Some of the cutscenes are reasonably well done, while others look terrible. Many of the characters are recognizable facsimiles of the ones in ?the movies, but the voices are often jarringly off, like the actors are straining to try and imitate them.

Peter Weller reprises his role as RoboCop, however, which is well done and just f??eels so right.

Gunplay also tends to get a bit ridiculous. Everything is leaned to make you feel as powerful as possible, which sometimes manifests in strange ways. You can grab enemies, for example, and that brings their faces straight up to the screen where you can view their awkward and gross visages. The grab, in general, has a range of a few feet, so if you hit the button (say during a slow-motion part) and the enemy is a few paces away from you, they’ll be drawn into your hand by an unseen for??ce. The ragdoll is ridiculous, and environmental animations aren’t much better. I found all this to be amusing and enjoyable, but if you’re used to playing big-budget games from large publishers, the lack of polish might seem like a sign of poor quality.

RoboCop: Rogue City Bomb defusal

You call this a GLITCH!?

Worst of all, however, are the technical problems I ran into. The audio levels are all over the place, with some characters sounding quiet and far away when they’re talking to you. I found it to be a huge improvement if I was listeni??ng throu?gh headphones. What was most distracting was the texture streaming problems I had constantly. The ground in front of me would be a blob of low-resolution textures that slowly come into focus while I stared at them. During the dialogue, whenever the shot would reverse to another character, I’d be treated to their soft, blurry faces for a while until patches of their skin would start to be rendered in higher resolution.

I took various troubleshooting steps to try and fix this, both with the game’s settings and my own graphics card, and nothing had any effect. I can often overlook performance issu??es, but this was so annoying and distracting throughout the entire game. I’m not sure if this problem exists on console versions. Maybe it will eve??n be fixed in some early patch for the game. But it marred my experience.

Come quietly, or there will be... trouble

I said in my preview of Rogue City that I was curious to maintain the quality present in the demo. It’s certainly true that it gets clumsier as it moves towards its climax, but weirdly, it never loses its focus. It still manages to surprise all through its runtime, and there’s always something new to keep you engaged. I was afraid the environments would become less interesting, the story would start being rushed, or t?he game would eventually drop its exploration aspect, but that never happened. I feel that one of the game??’s best setpieces shows up very close to the end. Everything gets proper closure.

In a lot of ways, RoboCop: Rogue City is a better successor to the first movie than either of its sequels. I think the only downside that a lot of fans will find is that it was made by a relati??vely small developer and backed by a less prominent pub??lisher. There’s a lot less gloss than you’d find overlapping at a typical “AAAgame, but that also makes it obvious to see the passion that went into it.

That’s sort of what it comes down to. I feel like RoboCop: Rogue City is a terrific game. To use the obvious reference: I’d buy that for a dollar. I can see myself playing through its 15-20 hours again, not necessarily to check out things I may have missed, but simply to re-experience the world it presents. I know that it almost looks like something that belongs in the sc?rap heap, but if you’re able to look past its rough exterior and exposed seams, you might see the heart that beats underneath. Teyon did a fantastic job with the resources they had, but they’re only human.

Do you remember how RoboCop: Rogue City was coming to Switch? No you don't, because it's not happen?ing! Nacon has confirmed that their plans for a Switch version has been quietly tossed in the dump??ster.

This might not be much of a surprise. The Switch logo hasn't been shown on the game's trailers since at least the Future Games Show that was held in August. It was, on the other hand, on its gameplay reveal trailer from last year. So, it seems that a Switch version was at least considered. Gematsu reached out to Nacon to get confirmation and was told, “At this moment, we don’t have any plans for a Nintendo Switch release./p>

Normally for a licensed game, this wouldn't be a huge loss, but I recently played the Robocop: Rogue City demo, and it ins?tantly shot up my list of anticipated games. I was not expecting that. Not only does it capture the feel of being a walking refrigerator, it also ties in deeper elements to complement its gunplay. My only question at this point is if it can maintain that quality for the game's runtime. If so, I'll be stunned, blown away, and many other hyperbolic statements that will hopefully get me into the accolades trailer.

As I mentioned, however, a Switch version of Robocop: Rogue City was never heavily advertised to start with. However, there's evidence that it was considered, but they decided not to go through with it. This might have been technical difficul??ties, lack of budget, or any number of other reasons. Still, it's a bummer for gamers who prefer to stick to Nintendo's handheld hybrid.

Did I mention how amped I am for this game?

RoboCop: Rogue City? is still coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on November 2, 2023. And I'm very excited.

I really didn’t expect RoboCop: Rogue City to even be any good when it was first revealed, let alone be absorbed in a demo of it for hours. Licensed games are rarely high up on my priorities, and even though I love RoboCop, I never thought anyone would go to the ef???fort of doing the movie justice in a video game.

RoboCop is a lot more than just a license easily transferable to action figures. The 1987 movie was a surprisingly grey look at corporate overreach, gentrification, the role of police, and the nature of humanity, among other things. Those themes, as well as the ultra-violence depicted, make it strange that it would be adapted into a children’s cartoon. It’s so ironic for the license; an irony that was probably missed by the marketing d??epartme??nt.

And while the action-oriented plot and memorable protagonist would and have been ample groundwork for a braindead action game, I figured it would be too much work for a licensed title to really create something faithful to the movie. For that matter, I can’t believe the developer who turned Rambo into a rail shooter would be the one to make the attempt. But if the demo is any indication, they’ve succeeded??.

//youtu.be/zoeMhqNzJeQ?feature=shared

Somewhere, there is a crime happening

RoboCop: Rogue City supposedly takes place between RoboCop 2 and RoboCop 3. I’ll take their word for it since I’ve never watched the sequels. I’ve heard they weren’t as good as the original, and some of the cast complained about the studio’s handling of the material, so I just ignored them. It doesn’t feel like I missed much because I would absolutely believe that Rogue City also ignored the sequels.

If you’re unfamiliar, RoboCop is a mechanized weapon of law enforcement created by resurrecting fall??en officer Alex Murphy as a zombie cyborg. The demo starts off with Murphy doing what he does best and marching into danger along with his partner Anne Lewis.

The thing about RoboCop is he seems barely capable of movement. His a??dvantage against crime is that he’s virtually immune to small arms firepower, but any perpetrator capable of moving faster than a brisk walk can evade him. You would expect that any first-person shooter developer would take?? some creative liberties with this and just make Murphy move and die like any other protagonist, but they really didn’t.

RoboCop is a dumpster on legs. He can take immense amounts of damage without stopping, and that’s exactly how RoboCop: Rogue City plays.

RoboCop Rogue City Combat
Screenshot by Destructoid

That's it, buster. No more military aid!

I am not sure I have ever experienced such a satisfyingly dumb shooter. It feels so good to be RoboCop. Even with your default pistol, you can absolutely tear down anything in your way. Any damage can be patched up with a health pack. I often wondered who would be dumb enough to actually take shots at the walking death machine, and that carries through to Rogue City. It felt like playing with god-mode on. The swarms of thugs? were merely flies to be s??watted.

If you’ve watched any v?ideo of the game in action, it looks extremely janky. It is. There’s no way around it, but all the combat has a veneer of dopiness to it. You can grab enemies and hurl them at each other. You can serve the public trust by hurling them out the window. Years of deliberately playing bad games has left me inoculated to jank. If you’re not, you probably won’t get my excitement.

However, the combat is only part of it. You might have expected the demo to stop after the first mission, but it doesn’t. After the prologue??, you’re allowed to wander around the Detroit Metro West Precinct and can pick up and complete some rather unique side-quests. But it doesn’t stop after that, either. You’re th??en sent off into Old Detroit to try and track down a perpetrator.

RoboCop: Rogue City Parking Ticket
Screenshot by Destructoid

One parking ticket is all it takes to improve mindfulness

The surprising thing is that RoboCop: Rogue City doesn’t just depict Murphy as an action protagonist but also as a cop. The chunk of Old Detroit you’re left to explore is a large hub environment, similar to the open areas of Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Instead of just heading of??f to the mission waypoint, you’re rewarded for serving the public trust. This doesn’t just take the form of optional combat and investigation activities, but also in ticketing for petty crimes. Along the way, Murphy muses to himself about what a great job he’s doing.

This is the most surprising part to me because I definitely expected a straightforward first-person shooter. I was not expecting Deus Ex mixed with L.A. Noire. It’s a difficult mixture to work on, and not something I expected from Nacon and Teyon. Yet, somehow, it’s here. And even more su?rprising is that it all works.

The budgetary restrictions mostly show when it comes to the g?ame’s graphics. The environments shown off look okay, but the characters are invariably terrible-looking. While RoboCop is based on his origin??al actor, Peter Weller, I wasn’t sure about some of the other characters. They often look similar, but I can’t tell if they’re supposed to be legally distinct or just terrible renders of their real-world actors.

RoboCop on the phone
Screenshot by Destructoid

You call this a glitch!?

Meanwhile, you’re graded on your performance and can spend your experience on tuning Murphy in both combat and investigation abilities. In various ways, these abilities present themself outside of combat. Deduction, for example, can allow you to obtain pieces of evidence that make it easier to nab the perpetrator. I just can’t believe that it’s a feature in a RoboCop game.

I’m very curious to see if RoboCop: Rogue City can maintain the quality shown in the demo through a full-length game. If Teylon does manage to pull it off, it might become an unexpected favorite for me this year. Because while there is jank and rough edges abound, there is also an obvious passion and excitement in putting it together. There are way easier routes to take in creating a RoboCop game, but Teyon di??dn’t take them. They went for something much more fascinating. And that shows a level of passion and excitement ??that you just rarely see in licensed games or any game with massive budgets and huge teams.

That's life in the big city

During today's Nacon Connect live stream, the French publisher released a new gameplay trailer for RoboCop: Rogue City, which is currently in development at Treyon?? for PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.

The new title, representing the first video game adaptation of the RoboCop franchise in many years, will see players mount the leg holster of Alex Murphy, slain in the line of duty and resurrected as The Future of Law Enforcement. The new gameplay clip sees our boy Go Robo through the slums of Old Detroit, where he investigat???es, (ie decimates), a suspected inner-city drug trafficking operation.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnqLsINgQDA

In the clip, we see Murphy note evidence littering the crime scene, before encountering an addict of the city's most prominent and destructive drug, NUKE. Having followed police procedure to this point, Murphy then executes a search warrant Which basically means he punches down the door of an arcade and slaughters everybody inside. Rogue City looks to be replicating much of the iconography from Paul Vehoeven's 1987 masterpiece including grid-based aiming, the recording of evidence, and buckets and buc??kets of the red stuff. Actor Peter Weller has returned to voice Murphy in-game.

Also of note is a similar vein of black humor, such as a gang of buggy-whip-armed thugs even considering taking on our titanium-covered walking tank. RoboCop: Rogue City is certainly being developed in an interesting era, when the movie's underlying themes of capitalism gone amok, c??orporate-run crime, and the overbearing police state have reached upsetting highs in the real world. Hopefully, Treyon will be able to finely balance the carnage and violence of Murphy's actions with the satire, commentary, and heart that lies buried within the film's narrative.

I might be asking too much, but I'd ?still buy that. For a dollar.

RoboCop: Rogue Nation is scheduled?? to launch in September on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X.

Nacon is gearing up for its next Nacon Connect live stream, where the publisher plans to show off an array of its upcoming releases, spearheaded by Teyon's RoboCop: Rogue City and Daedalic Entertainment's RPG adaptation The Lord of the Rings: Gollum. The stream will take place on March 9.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQ2hZ-4JCTE&ab_channel?=Naco?n

Originally announced in the summer of 2021, RoboCop: Rogue City will see The Future of Law Enforcement laying down the Prime Directives in the city of Old Detroit. Fans are hoping that the titl?e will capture the ridiculous violence and biting satire of Paul Verhoeven's fantastic 1987 movie. Actor Paul Weller is confirmed to be on board to p??????????????????????????rovide his voice and likeness to the irreplaceable Alex Murphy.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is an action-RPG that has unfortunately fallen into something of a development spiral, having been delayed several times since its initial announcement. Initially slated for launch in 2021 and then 2022, Daedalic Entertainment is yet to announce an official launch date for The Precious' arrival on PC and console platforms. Perhaps this Nacon Connect will finally mark the calendar with ink, giving LOTR fans so??mething particularly intr??iguing to look forward to.

In addition to RoboCop: Rogue City and The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, the Nacon Connect will feature appearances from Robin Hood-themed multiplayer title Gangs of Sherwood, motorbike sim TT3: Ride on the Edge, psychological WWI horror Ad Infinitum, and fantasy roguelike Ravenswatch. We can also e?xpect to see the latest from the publisher's line of gaming hardware and? accessories, including headphones, microphones, and keyboards.

You can check out the stream over on the official Nacon YouTube channel on March 9, with the action scheduled t??o kick off at 10:00 PT / 13:00 ET / ??18:00 BST.

Peter Weller is on board

Yes, there's a RoboCop game on the way, and not to jinx us, but it looks good! Nacon and Teyon who you might remember from another recent licensed game, Terminator: Resistance debuted the RoboCop: Rogue City gameplay trailer at Nacon Connect 2022.

It's hard to adapt a perfect movie into a video game, but they're going for it.

//youtu.be/jQ2hZ-4JCTE

In line with the 1987 movie, OmniCorp has t??aken control of the Detroit Police Department, and it's now on RoboCop to clean up the streets by popping scumbags' heads. Today's gameplay trailer showed several first-person skirmishes, including RoboCop's iconic targeting system, and I hope Teyon goes all the way with the HUD elements.

??I'm not expecting ?glossy high-budget FPS action, but that's okay if they nail the little details. If this one's "for the fans," that'll be fine. I hope it's widely enjoyable, though.

"You have the power to decide how to fulfill prime directives in your own way, but as the story unfolds proceed with caution because corruption and greed know no limit," according to the summary. It's also confirmed that RoboCop himself, Peter Weller, will return for "voiceover work on the game."? It's a check they needed to write, for su??re.

The Steam page has a few more screenshots, including one with ED-209.

RoboCop: Rogue City ED-209

Remember those directives

I'm curious what kind of progression this game might have how do you make RoboCop feel powerful without going overboard? To be honest, I wouldn't mind being totally OP. As the crime wave escalates, I'm sure OCP's heavy weaponry will come out in full force.

RoboCop: Rogue City is in development for PC (Steam and the Epic Games Store), PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch. (I was surprised by that last one, but there's a logo and everyth??ing at the end of the trailer.) It's launching in June 2023, and I'm hopeful.

Nacon is getting set to kick off its summer Nacon Connect live stream, offering updates, trailers, and reveals pertaining to the publisher's upcoming wares. The action will kick of?f in about 15 minutes' time and is expected to run for around an hour in lengt??h. You can check out the action in the stream below.

Nacon has been pretty forthcoming about the titles it will be spotlighting during the stream. We can expect new updates on robo-revolution title Steelrising, Lord of the Rings adventure Gollum, racers Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown and WRC Generations, and Games Workshop's ultra-violent sports sim Blood Bowl III. We will also be hearing about several new Xbox accessori??es in development in Nacon's hardware division, including the Daija Arcade Stick and the snazzy Pro Compact Colorlight controller.

Perhaps the most intriguing title on the lineup is RoboCop: Rogue City, which was first revealed during last summer's Nacon Connect live stream. Developed by studio Teyon of Terminator: Resistance fame, we still know so little about Alex Murphy's latest jaunt into the digital realm. Though RoboCop, as a franchise, seems custom-??designed for video games, the brand has always struggled to truly recreate the cinematic excellence of Paul Verhoeven's 1987 classic.

While Teyon's Terminator title admittedly left something to be desired from a gameplay standpoint, it was clear that the studio does understand the potential buried within these enduring cinematic licenses. Fingers crossed that the developer will deliver the goods with RoboCop: Rogue City, and that we'll see some promi???sing gameplay footage today.

Join us on Destructoid this lunchtime and we can see what's in store. ??You have 15 minutes to comply.

Stay Out of Trobble

Nacon is joining the long list of p??ublishers dropping dates for its own summer live stream presentation. Nacon Connect 2022, which is scheduled to take place on July 7, will feature a slew of reveals, updates, and trailers pertaining to the company's catalog of upcoming games, accessories, and development projects.

"This year, NACON Connect is reinventing itself in its format and will feature even more content for gamers," said the company in a press release. "Two pre-show and post-show sessions will be added and hosted by renowned influencers. The conference will be the occasion to announce several major projects, reveal new trailers and exclusive?? gameplay, and introduce new accessories that will delight all gamers."

While Nacon is expected to reveal the show's itinerary at a later date, we can snugly assume that we'll be seeing updates on the cyber revolution RPG Steelrising, Daedalic's action-adventure title The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, and Teyon's previously teased RoboCop: Rogue City. Nacon promises new trailers, exclusive gameplay footage, and the debut of several new accessories from the company's hardware d??ivision.

Nacon Connect 2022 will go live on July 7 at 10:00 PT / 13:00 ET / 18:00 BST and can be watched on the official Nacon YouTube and Twitch channels. I may not be a "ren??owned influencer", but I'll also do my best to bring you any ?pertinent news from the stream right here on Destructoid.

Trading one robot for another

The streets of Old Detroit are getting a virtual tune-up. A new RoboCop game, RoboCop: Rogue City, has been set for 2023 on PC and consoles.

Announced during today's Nacon Connect, RoboCop: Rogue City is a new game from Teyon, the developer behind 2019's Terminator: Resistance. We onl?y got a brief teaser today, as the trailer description says you will take on the role of RoboCop to bring justi?ce to the streets of Old Detroit.

Although Rogue City is based on "the first three films in the original RoboCop universe?," it will tell its own "original story" that aims to be "faithful to the franchise's DNA."

It's still a few years out, so I'm not expe??cting to see much more of this for a while. Publis?her Nacon has only confirmed PC and consoles as the platforms.

Though Terminator: Resistance was originally met with a tepid reception, I've noticed folks coming around to it, especially as it's been patched and gone on sale a few times. A studio with some Terminator experience definitely seems like the right place to hand a RoboCop game to, but we'll ha?ve to wait to see the results until 2?023.
