Evo 2024 has come and gone, with another year of spectacular fighting game competition in the books. Across its eight main games and many, many side tournaments and exhibitions, there was really no shortage of ?high-level fightin' and scrappin' to watch.

With all the streams and excitement, though, it might be easy to overlook some of the news announced over the course of the event. Who wasn't distracted by Hayao's 3rd Strike run, after all? So we've gathered all the fighting game news from the weekend in one co?nvenien?t post, to peruse in the wake of another excellent Evo. Here's every piece of fighting game news announced at Evo 2024.

Hunter x Hunter: Nen Impact adds Meruem, shows opening movie

The upcoming Hunter x Hunter fighting game Nen Impact didn't just get one new character, but what looks like its entire base roster is confirmed. The Chimera Ant leader Meruem got the most spotlight, but there are a few more familiar faces sprinkled throughout the opening movie. Though a few notable HxH characters are mis??sing, it looks like a solid roster to start??.

Rivals 2 adds Orcane, and is making the post-launch roster free

While platform-fighters walk a thin line between fighting games and being their own thing, Rivals of Aether has been an excellent Smash alternative to follow. Alongside confirming Orcane is making the jump to Rivals 2 when it launches in 2024, Aether Studios also confirmed all future Rivals 2 characters will head to the game free-of-charge. Pretty rad! Sp??eak??ing of platform-fighters...

Samurai Jack is coming to MultiVersus

Season 2 is on the way for MultiVersus, with Samurai Jack in the lead and Beetlejuic?e due later on. Warner Bros.' multiversal multiplayer game has certainly had a rough go of things, but maybe a guaranteed crowd-plea??ser like Jack can help tilt the narrative back in its favor. Samurai Jack arrives with Season 2 on July 23.

Here's what skins will look like in 2XKO

Riot's League of Legends fighting game 2XKO didn't share too much major news, as the team just recently revealed Braum and has its alpha coming up soon. For Evo 2024, though, the developers did show a brief look at the possibilities for skins in 2XKO using Ahri's Dynasty fit. If LoL i??????????????????????????s any indication, I definitely expect this game to have some cosmetic options when it fully launches next year.

The King of Fighters XV adds Vice and Mature

SNK had quite a bit of news to announce this weekend, starting with Vice and Mature joining the KOF XV roster in De??cember 2024. It's the addition of two known characters, but it's nice to know Team Yagami fans can get the team back together.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ekd2XTPAx48

Fatal Fury: COTW adds Kevin Rian to the line-up

The upcoming City of the Wolves also announced Kevin Rian for the lineup. Still not too much to talk about here, but the next Fatal Fury is looking quite solid. I got to play some of it back at Summer Game Fest this year, and dug how it's been coming along. Alongside the new trailer, we also got a quiet confirmation that SNK is working on a new Art of Fighting and a Samurai Shodown action RPG.

SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos gets a re-release

Here's the big surprise of the weekend from SNK: SVC Chaos is re-released for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam and GOG. It's a bit more niche and not quite as beloved as Capcom vs. SNK, but it certainly throws some fuel on the fire for those wanting a re-release of CvS, or even a new title.

Under Night In-Birth 2 Sys:Celes adds Uzuki this month

Back on the anime fighter side, Under Night In-Birth 2 is continuing it??s character rollout with Uzuki, who's going to be widely available not long after the conclusion of Evo 2024.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising confirms a second year of content

For Granblue players, Cygames confirmed an entire second year of content is coming to Rising, with Versusia already locked in and more characters on the way. Plus, there are a host of feature updates and even story content planned. It was really rad to see the Granblue scene thr??iving in the early Sunday morning finals s?lot.

Guilty Gear Strive reveals four more fighters, including Lucy from Cyberpunk Edgerunners

While the surprise was dampened a bit by an early leak, it's still crazy that Guilty Gear is adding a guest character, and from Cyberpunk Edgerunners. That said, Lucy feels like a perfect pick, and I cannot wait to see what she plays like sometime next year. Meanwhile, a new character is also planned for Strive, alongside series favorites Dizzy and Venom.

Somehow, Heihachi returns to Tekken

Remember how Heihachi got thrown into a volcano? Well, it's the year of the dead fighting game villains returning; first Bison came back to Street Fighter, and now Heihachi is returning as the third character in Tekken 8's DLC roll-out. Expect him sometime after Lidia, who goes live this coming week. Some story DLC is also on the way too, which is a pretty notable addition for Tekken lore fans.

Evo is adding a few new events

Since its acquisition by Sony and RTS, Evo has been steadily expanding. It looks like that isn't stopping, as Evo is planning four events next year: the Evo Awards in February, Evo Japan in May, the main Evo show next August, and Evo France in October. Organizer Rick "The Hadou" Thiher also teased a Singapore event for 2026. I love seeing the European scene, and France in particular, get the Evo spotlight lik?e ??this.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LUExu3qU-o

Here's a new look at Terry Bogard in Street Fighter 6

After the confirmation at SGF 2024, we knew SNK's Terry was joining the Street Fighter 6 lineup this aut?umn. While Terry's trailer at Evo 2024 didn't necessarily contain any new information, we did get to see him in motion, and ??I think he looks pretty solid. No doubt he'll be popular when he joins the roster this fall.

That's everything for Evo 2024. A slightly more subdued year, without any major game reveals and a few known quantities, but certainly no shortage of new fighters enteri??ng their respective arenas. Plus, a surprise retro re-release that might put some hope in older fighting game fans'?? hearts for more.

News or not, there were some fantastic finals, from an energetic 3rd Strike bracket to incredible matches across Granblue, Tekken, and more. Here's to one good year in the books, and a?nother year of fighting games ahead.

Highlighting what's good before it's gone

We are several days deep into the first Steam Next Fest of 2023. The event highlights upcoming games, and there's been a bountiful slew of demos rolling out to show Steam users just what they can expect in t??he future.

There are also, frankly, a gazillion demos on the storefront for Steam Next Fest. And while some of Valve's tools and algorithms can be effective for finding what you're looking for, you may also want to stumble into something you're not looking for. Games on the periphery, those that can surprise us, can sometimes wind up our favorites by year's end.

With that in mind, we've assembled a list of demos worth checking out before Steam Next Fest wraps up. Throughout the week, we've had our writers tackling longer impressions from demos that caught their eye, and we'll note those here, as well as some other games I've personally added to my wa?tchlist. The event runs from February 6 through 13, so if you're tuning in this weekend for ??a demo-spree or two, here's a good list to get you started.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXGc7QMHTXU

Radio the Universe

This eerie top-down action game may feel familiar, but Radio the Universe twists on just about everything you'd expect from the genre, from platforming and action to its presentation. Thanks to both style and substance, the long-awaited Radio the Universe has quickly become a standout demo of Steam Next Fest. Check out some longer?? thoughts and impressions here.

Cavern of Dreams

Do you wish to return to the age of Nintendo 64 platforming glory? Is everything else trying to take you there not hitting right? Well, maybe the Cavern of Dreams can help. As Zoey puts it in our writeup, "Cavern of Dreams is a pleasant experience that does a great job of harkening back to the better experiences on the N64." You can't ever truly go home again, but you can visit the Cavern of Dreams and ??pictur??e a different home, with fewer polygons and more collectibles.

Afterimage

Those looking for a Metroidvania with a little more style will probably find what they're looking for in Afterimage. While our writeup noted some enemies that feel a bit too sponge-y, the style and vibe of Afterimage permeates through every screenshot. A good-looking Metroidvania with some cool and challenging enemies? I have? a good feeling this could be a Steam Deck hit.

[caption id="attachment_361920" align="alignnone" width="640"] Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Mr. Saitou

Look, I'll level with you. Mr. Saitou is about llamaworms. Part llama, part worm. It's got a lot of heart, some good writing, and a snappy soundtrack. From those details alone, I think you know if you're in or out. But if you need anymore convincing, you can check out some longer thoughts on both Mr. Saitou and its in-universe compatriot Rakuen in our demo impressions here.

[caption id="attachment_362125" align="alignnone" width="640"]Super 56 Butt-shot Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Super 56

Why not keep the odd-train rolling with Super 56, the wild micro-game collection from Onion Soup Interactive that mixes simple button inputs with increasingly complex and bizarre tasks. It's the sort of game where driving a go-kart can immediately pivot into launching arrows into apples (or butts), and that's just the vibe. It's a good one, too. Check out more in our writeup here.

[caption id="attachment_361951" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via ColePowered Games[/caption]

Shadows of Doubt

Have you ever wondered if you could solve a mystery? Not one that's box and prepared for you, or presented in a neat procedural fashion, but a genuine whodunnit. Shadows of Doubt forced me to confront that question with how incredibly, and intimidatingly, open its world is. It's a go-anywhere, find-it-yourself kind of detective sim that pushed me to make connections and uncover plots bit-by-bit. If you like red strings and thumb tacks, t??his might be up your alley.

[caption id="attachment_361802" align="alignnone" width="640"]Mail Time Gliding Screenshot by Destructoid[/caption]

Mail Time

Sometimes, the pressures of the real world can be a bit much. Taxes, drama, and the neverending barrage of social media can build up. Sometimes, you just wanna be a lil' guy. Well, Mail Time is all about being a lil' guy. You can read more about its cozy charm here, and why sometimes it's just nice to be a wee courier in the woods??.

[caption id="attachment_291017" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Red Hook Studios[/caption]

Darkest Dungeon II

The first Darkest Dungeon made a big impact with its mix of roguelike runs and grim terror. Darkest Dungeon II takes it on the road, with a rickety carriage ride through eldritch horror and abomination country. It's been in Early Access for a while now on Epic, but Steam Next Fest will let those platform users check out a slice before the 1.0 launch in May.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=letySUGc0ZI

Robodunk

It's basketball, by way of block-based robots. Robodunk's unequivocally rad pitch highlights its unique charm and draw, mixing childlike wonder with the arcade-style approach to sports and a Rogue Legacy twist. Of the many demos in the Steam Next Fest, Robodunk ponders the question, "would you like to see this robot dunk?" The only acceptable answer is yes, and you can read all about why it's good in our writeup here.

[caption id="attachment_361576" align="alignnone" width="640"]Bleak Sword DX Header Image via Devolver Digital[/caption]

Bleak Sword DX

The latest from more8bit and Devolver Digital mixes the classic with the new. It looks like an old game, but Bleak Sword DX handles more like Tunic or other modern action games, as you fight the evils of the night and roll around its world. With a Jim Guthrie soundtrack on deck, this is probably worth checking out.

[caption id="attachment_362774" align="alignnone" width="640"]Plan B Terraform Image via Gaddy Games[/caption]

Plan B: Terraform

Look, I'll level with you: I had to stop playing the demo for Plan B: Terraform. I had to step away, because it ate away at my time in ways I absolutely was not expecting it to. Plan B falls into the same territory as Factorio or Dyson Sphere Program, but it's sleek and straightforward. You just mine, harvest, and?? create. It's not overly punishing, and there are no enemies to contend with in the demo. Just many, many rocks to harvest and systems to perfect, as you slowly but surely reform this planet into a humming titan of resource-retrieval. If that appeals to you, it's worth checking out.

[caption id="attachment_362780" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Ishtar Games\[/caption]

Lakeburg Legacies

The eye-catching art style of Lakeburg Legacies is reason enough to give the demo a shot. Beneath the look of it, though, there is an undercurrent of systems that sends me into a Sims-like fervor of assigning, managing, and matchmaking villagers. You're not quite playing god, but you are definitely weaving and navi?gating the threads of lives in this village, helping them raise farms and start families, in a style that's sure to appeal to the social life-sim fans.

[caption id="attachment_362779" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via sunset visitor[/caption]

1000xRESIST

This is one of the games on my list to play this weekend, but it's one of the demos I'm anxious to play this Steam Next Fest weekend. 1000xRESIST follows your life as a clone, dealing with a shattered history and trying to piece together what you can. It's published by Fellow Traveller, which has been pushing some great story games for a while now, and this looks like another potential hit. I probably won't play too far in, to avoid spoiling myself on the full experience, but I'm eager to see what developer Sunset Visitor is creating with 1000xRESIST.

[caption id="attachment_362789" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Excellent Rectangle[/caption]

Tape to Tape

There are some days you think you've seen everything games could have to offer. And then Tape to Tape, a roguelite sports game that answers the question "what if Hades played hockey" shows up. Sports fans will definitely want to put aside time to see this, especially if you're tired of annual franchise installments. Tape to Tape seems like a solid hockey game, with a really intriguing X-factor in its rogue?lite set-up.

[caption id="attachment_362793" align="alignnone" width="640"] Image via Wishfully[/caption]

Planet of Lana

The side-scrolling platformer-adventure Planet of Lana has appeared at several different streams and showcases. Now, it's finally playable in the comfort of your own home via Steam Next Fest. Check out our demo impressions here to read more about how Planet of Lana plays out in demo for??m, and how it mixes its art with some tense puzzles and platforming.

There are many more, too many more, demos? for us to possibly list here. Be sure and shout out any favorites you've found in the comments below! The February 2023 Steam Next Fest concludes on Feb. 13, 2023.

Mickey, Black Panther, and even Jake Sully

Today, Disney and Marvel aired its first-ever games showcase. The duo spotlighted a bunch of games, both upcoming and out right now, coming to a bunch of systems. Even Avatar snuck in there.

The showcase covered a bunch of stuff, so we're here to help break it all down. Everything ranging from a teaser for Skydance New Media's still-untitled Marvel project, to some new Disney Dreamlight Valley residents.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPm7MLt2BgQ

The headlines from the Disney and Marvel Games Showcase

  • Bithell Games opened the show with a short teaser for its Tron project, Tron Identity. A quick jaunt over to its Steam page shows it's a visual novel adventure set in the digitized world of Tron, which sounds pretty awesome, actually.

  • Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy team up for some co-op platforming in Disney Illusion Island. This will probably be hit-or-miss for some folks, but could be a decent co-op platformer for families. That's coming to Nintendo Switch sometime in 2023.
  • Marvel's Midnight Suns resurfaces, and it's got a new date! And by Odin's beard, it's this year still! Firaxis' Marvel project will arrive on December 2, and get a prequel series of shorts starting on Oct. 31.

  • Red Hulk is coming to Marvel Strike Force. I don't know enough about the different Hulk variants to tell you what's happening there, only that there's just a whole lotta Hulk. And when's that ever a bad thing?
  • The card battler take on the Marvel universe, Marvel Snap, locks in a launch date of October 18 for PC and mobile. That seems like one to check out if you like the idea of Marvel crossing over with Gwent or Hearthstone.
  • Alien: Dark Descent got a short gameplay clip. It looks kind of neat, but now I just keep thinking about how Aliens should cross-over into Kingdom Hearts.
  • Speaking of franchises you sometimes forget fall under the Disney umbrella, Ubisoft's Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora got a little teaser. That's coming to PC and next-gen consoles.
  • Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is getting a Galactic Edition, featuring some characters from the Disney+ lineup of Star Wars shows.

  • Return to Monkey Island keeps looking rad. That's arriving pretty darn soon, on September 19.
  • Gargoyles Remastered is on the way. adding another classic to the list of remastered Disney platformers.
  • Disney Mirrorverse has some villainous stuff afoot, with more info in October. Disney Speedstorm also showed up, to confirm its bringing Monsters, Inc. to the roster when it launches.
  • Toy Story is coming to super-chill life-sim Disney Dreamlight Valley sometime this fall. I'm not sure Buzz Lightyear knows how to fish, but we can teach him.
  • Avatar: Reckoning is an MMO RPG shooter where you play as an "Avatar warrior", with guns and customizable Na'vi bodies. I'm pretty distracted by the NieR: Automata boss battle they spliced in for a second there.
  • Skydance New Media teases its upcoming Marvel project, which looks to follow Captain America and Black Panther. No title yet, but sounds pretty neat!

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=2f5JMCX1-7I

  • Niantic closes the show with Marvel World of Heroes, which will looks like it's an augmented reality game with Marvel tie-ins.

Some of the coolest upcoming games we saw at the show

PAX East 2022 was a strange one. It was my first time attending the show since the pan?demic shuttered in-person conventions. And it was nice, getting to see old friends, new faces, and plenty ??of interesting indie games in Boston again.

Throughout my four days, I wandered the show floor, checking out plenty of games along the way. And to be clear, I did?n't see everything. Despite best efforts and a slimmer-than-usual year, there was still plenty on the floor I never got a chance to ch??eck out.

But among the list of what I did see, a few in particular stood out. So without further a?do, here are some games worth keeping an eye on from PAX East 2022.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uyhz-HBx9wI

Lucid

Take a little bit of every platformer you've dug in the past, mix it together, and you're somewhere in the ballpark of Lucid. It's got a little Celeste and Metroid, plus some time-trial speedrunning influence, and a Hyper Light Drifter-adjacent style.

But comparisons don't really do justice to seeing it in?? motion. It ties this all together into a game that, even in a behind-closed-screens hands-off demo, looked tight and fast. This small indie project was one of my favorites of the weekend, and though I only saw a little slice, I'm incredibly interested in seeing what developer Eric Manahan has in store for the future.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

What more do I need to say? TMNT: Shredder's Revenge turned out exactly as I'd hoped it would. It's energetic, u?pbeat, easy to pick?? up and a blast to master.

It's full of charm, the way y??ou'd want a Saturday morning brawler to play. The turtles, Splinter, and April all feel unique and worth swapping around the roster to check out. I'm glad this retro? brawler is shaping up so well.

Cursed to Golf

Someone in the comments section of my preview asked why so many indies are tackling golf in particular. It's been a few days since, and I feel like Cursed to Golf provides the answer.

Golf itself is a malleable sport. You have clubs, a ball, and a hole you have to whack the ball into. Everything in-between is completely up to the designer; the course can take whatever twists and turns it wants. Cursed to Golf does just that, turning a grand ol' game of golf into a platforming, puzzle-solving, route-planning roguelike full of challenge and fun characters. It's a clever reinterpretation in the vein of Golf Story and What the Golf, and worth keeping an eye on.

Find it on Steam, with a demo, here.

Signalis

The demo I tried out at PAX East 2022 was actually the same one I played last year, so I don't have much new to report on the Signalis front.

That is also an incredibly good thing, as I was more than happy to play that excellent demo again and still be just as excited for the full game. This lo-fi, sci-fi survival horror with classic Resident Evil vibes is high on my watchlist. If you like horror of the technologic, extraterrestrial variety, don't let Signalis slip by.

Find it on Steam here.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlwimDp1eqw

Cult of the Lamb

This was one of the big surprises for me. Not because I wasn't aware of Cult of the Lamb; I'd seen it pop up in showcases and trailers. But I did not think I was the target demographic for t??his one.

Behind the admittedly fun contrast of cute and grim, beyond the roguelite action, there's a base-building management side that captured my attention. Building a cult means building, after all. And I'm very eager to build my own adorable animal following when Cult of the Lamb finally drops.

Find it on Steam here.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJQjQ-nfJRY

Lego Bricktales

Few games have captured my childhood like Lego Bricktales, a game about physics and Lego bricks in equal measure. It's a fun adventure through a dioramic world that le?ts you problem-solve with batches of plastic bricks.

Snap them together, then send across the robot and see if it holds. It's a surprisingly simple concept that works very, very well in the world of Lego. Keep an eye on Bricktales if you?? want more hands-on building in your virtual Lego experiences.

Find it on Steam here.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=kYPSoSsOCrU

Rusted Moss

I managed to catch a spot on the Rusted Moss set-up in the PAX Rising area between appointments, which was a surprise in and of itself. It ga?rnered quite the crowd there, and after playing some, ??it's easy to see why.

Rusted Moss has elements of bullet hell, MetroidContra, and even Bionic Commando. It looks great, feels great to play, and swinging across gaps with my barrel blazing d??own on enemies felt incredible. It ticks an incredible number of boxes and, even in a short demo, made a long-lasting impression.

Find it on Steam, with a demo, here.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNsmLahKQE4

Potionomics

The way Potionomics mixes multiple genres I really enjoy together into one cohesive brew is pretty astounding. Sell potions to meet people, date those people, get their cards, and haggle better at the store. Build decks,?? seek rarer ingredients, and meet the needs of a town full of adventurers and mysteries.

Throw in a dash of quite excellent character design and animation, and Potionomics seems to be coming together quite well. I'm excite?d to mix, socialize, and sell? later on this year.

Find it on Steam here.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMotjq4Dltg

Demon Throttle

The pitch for Demon Throttle is pretty different from your usual game. It's a physical-only game, for the Nintendo Switch. And while I'm cautious on the approach, I?? do admit, it's a pretty fun game to pl??ay.

Demon Throttle is a pretty tough top-down shooter for two (or one person with character switching). It's got some RPG elements in the mix, and a lot of fun jokes. The pair of heroes seek revenge against a demon: the vampiress because it took her chalices, and the gunslinger because it slept with his wife. It's funny, very retro, and very fun. My one worry is more folks won't be able to play it, as it's currently sold out on the site. Hopefully manufacturing doesn't get in the way of a good time with Demon Throttle.

UpdateDeveloper Doinksoft has reached out to clarify that pre-orders are currently capped to let the manufacturer know how much to make in the initial run. The game will start shipping in "July or August," and during that time, sales are expected to re-open. Their intention, Doinksoft says, is to ensure Demon Throttle is "continuously available" to buy after launch.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXQMkQ71F_M

WrestleQuest

Wrestling and RPGs turn out to be an incredible mix in WrestleQuest. At first glance, it's easy to get taken in by the pixel art and turn-based battles wher??e s?everal fighters are duking it out in the ring.

Show up for that, but stay for the surprisingly good storytelling and tackling of darker subject matter. The narrative in this isn't pulling punches, and it?'??s got a star-studded lineup of wrestling legends to boot.

Find it on Steam here.

And one last note, special PAX East 2022 shoutouts to Match Point, a four-player competitive Pong-alike that's already out and was extremely fun to play; and Tough Love Arena, a free-to-play browser-based fighting game. They're both alread??y released, but very much worth your time.

This article has been updated to clarify Doinksoft's manufacturing plans for Demon Throttle.

Punching, driving, and Dooming

Nintendo's video game creation software Game Builder Garage has only been out in the public for a week. Much like Dreams or even Super Mario Maker be??fore it, though, users a?re already making some pretty incredible creations.

Game Builder Garage was a bit of a surprise announcement, with a surprise announcement last month and a launch only last week, in the middle of E3 2021. It sounds like the software is pretty alright, and? hopefully a little less intimidating than ot?her offerings.

Still, the early adopters are already finding ways to do things with this game I honestly didn't think would be possible. Here, for example, is one user recreating the steak-cooking minigame from Mario Party inside Game Builder Garage. There's also the Karate minigame from Rhythm Heaven, or maybe you want to play some Game & Watch without busting out the actual Game & Watch.

Note: (Almost) all the games and social posts we're linking have their respective Game Builder Garage codes in them, so you can try them out yourself!

Of course, remakes and look-alikes are always popular, especially on social media. An impressive F-Zero recreation was wow-ing people, both on Twitter and within our Slack DMs, earlier this week. There's a slightly more family-friendly version of P.T. that, uh, still managed to scare me.

And then there's still Doom EternalThe Legend of Zelda, a really neat-looking Sonic game, and the beginnings of a beloved LucasArts adventure. Somehow, there's a Grand Theft Auto-alike, which is a pretty ambitious goal to set one week in, but it has a drivable car, a store, and guns. What else do you need in a GTA?

And if you're looking for innovation, there's still more of it going around, as users are testing the bounds of what can be done with Game Builder Garage's code. And there are some original projects with some promise, too. In the course of a single week, the early adopters of Game Builder Garage are already showing that there's some zeal to create interesting projects in this suite; now, whether w?e see massive undertakings built within the game or not.

Either way, I can't wait to see wha?t the Game Builders cook up next. Oh, and before I go, I leave one last creation with you:
