Sifting through the many games on your PlayStation 5 can be a drag. When it comes to playing with a friend, there are going to be some limitations depending on the titles. So, if y??ou want to get a list of some of the best 2-player PS5 games out right now, ?check out our list.

The best 2 player games on the PS5

This list will include games that have appeared on the PlayStation 4. However, they can still be played on Sony’s current generation console. The games listed here are also multiplayer-friendly for local and online sessi?ons.

Rocket League
Image via Psyonix

Rocket League

Starting off with a free-to-play game, Rocket League can provide? hours of fun. Yeah, the better you get, the sweatier this game can be. However, if you’re playing with one other person locally against bots or online against other players, it’s just a good time whether you win or lose.

Though, to counte??r the whole sweaty aspect of the game, it’s such?? a good feeling when you finally master aerial and other advanced movement techniques.

Star Wars Battlefront Collection
Image via Aspyr

Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection

Despite having a very rough launch with server issues and crashing, there’s still fun to be had in the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection on the PS5. If you and a friend want to sit down for some cou??ch co-op or online Galactic Conquest or Campaign, yo?u can do just that.

It’ll be like 2005 all over again, just with slightly upsca??led graphics.

tetris effect: connected psvr2 ps5 update

Tetris Effect: Connected

Tetris Effect: Connected is the definitive Tetris experience on th?e Pl??ayStation 5. While it has a good ?selection of single-player modes, it also offers a lot for a multiplayer experience.

It has a three-player cooperative mode where you can team up with other people or sub in an AI to fight against a big boss. If you like a ??more PvP?? experience, it also sports the Zone Battle, Score Attack, and Classic modes.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure PS5

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy games aren’t quite as heavy hitters as Mario games, but if you want a solid platformer to get your friends in on the action, A Big Adventure is it. With easy drop-in multiplayer, you?? and your buddi?es can get through the game rather quickly.

The hectic nature of more players o??n screen just adds to a better time. Yeah, you’ll be getting in each othersâ€?way, but it’s ?all in good fun.

Serious Sam Collection

Serious Sam Collection

If you want the definitive version of a ??boomer shooter wit??h cheesy one-liners to mindlessly gun through with your friends, you’ll have a blast playing through the Serious Sam Collection. It’s? a collection of games that’s easy enough to get into with some friends locall?y or online.

This has the three mainline Serious Sam games in one, with the DLC for all of them. There are hours of hilarity and madness to be had as you and your squad mates can blast through hordes of wacky and vicious enemies. There’s even a survival and PvP component in the game if you want to extend the life of this game for your group. Just, skip The Legend of the Beast to save you and your partner(s) a headache.

Castle Crashers Remastered
Image via The Behemoth

Castle Crashers: Remastered

Castle Crashers was perhaps one of the best cooperative games to play with friends on the seventh generat??ion of consoles. Two generations later, it holds up well and it’s one to definitely have on your radar if you’re looking for some 2-player games.

It’s a light version of a side-scrolling RPG that even newcomers to gaming can understand. Plus, the many different classes you can play really open up how much replayability there?? is.

Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box
Image via Gearbox

Borderlands Collection: Pandora’s Box

So I’m kind of cheating here as this version of the Borderlands Collection contains the entirety of the series so far. What you want to focus on for a cooperative aspect are the FPS games: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, and Borderlands 3. Much like the Serious Sam collection, these games have all the DLC expansions packed in with?? them.

So, if you want a hell of a good story with humor that still ?mostly holds up today, even with the weaker parts?? of the third game, this series is the epitome of cooperative looter shooter games.

Broforce Forever Header
Image via Devolver Digital

Broforce

If you like games like Contra or Metal Slug, Broforce is going to be the perfect game for you and yo??ur co-op partner(s). The 8-bit gra??phics are such a blast in the past, paired with every unlockable character being a “broâ€?parody of a popular movie character from the ?80s and 90s.

The cherry on top is how hectic the game can get, with several explosio?ns, destructible environments, and the over-the-top satirical narrative. Even if you don’t like shoot-em-up games, this game is surely going to bring a smile to you and your group.

Astarion in Baldur's Gate 3.
Image via Larian Studios

Baldur’s Gate 3

Unlike many other cooperative games where you can just drop in and out of games, Baldur’s Gate 3 works differently. Characters are tied to campaign sessions, akin to typical Dungeons and Dragons sessions. It’s actually really cool, as you can actually “pick up where you left offwi?thout anyone getting ahead or being left behind.

With how much freedom you have in the game like exploration and dialogue choices, this is easily one of those games where you lose track of time. Plus, cooperative gaming just adds much more fun. It may be a genre that’s hard to get into, but cooperative Baldur’s Gate 3 deserves all the praise it gets.

It Takes Two
Image via Hazelight Studios

It Takes Two

You simply cannot overlook It Takes Two if you’re looking for the best nin?th-generation game to play with just two pl??ayers. It’s also deserving of all the praise it got not just from the story, but from the way it keeps you on your toes as you progress in this cooperative-only game.

Just as you start thinking this game can’t get any more innovative, it does. Please, play It Takes Two even if you thi?nk its graphics look “childish.Just let go of any preconceived notions of the game before trying this game.

While we have listed only ten games on this list, there are many others out there you ca?n try that suit you and your friends, family, or significant others. And yes, fighting games were omitted from this list, just because the skill gaps can oftentimes lead to shorter times playing them.

Also, Meet Your Maker and Tails of Iron

Warm up your network card, Sony has announced their offerings for their “EssentialTier offerings for all PlayStation Plus subscribers. Free for the month of April will be Sackboy: The Big Adventure, Meet Your Maker, and Tails of Iron.

//youtu.be/ZOk3fj5ujNM

Beginning with Sackboy: The Big Adventure, this 2020 LittleBigPlanet spin-off was described as Destructoid’s resident snack-cake, Chris Carter, as a a href="//jbsgame.com/reviews/?review-sackboy-a-big-adventure/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chill platformer. It ditches the creation suite that was such a focus of the LittleBigPlanet games to instead create a un??????????????????????????ique and charming platformer.

//youtu.be/ncT9bACGd5Q

Next up is Meet Your Maker from Behaviour In?teractive. This title is currently unreleased, so it you’ll be able to grab it free on its la?unch date if you’re a PlayStation Plus subscriber. Behaviour Interactive describes it as a first-person build and raid game. It has a co-op and base-building focus, so it’s something to grab if you need a game to share with a friend. If you have one.

//youtu.be/TMJF8hH8RGE

Finally, Tails of Iron is a Souls-like action-RPG, that Destructoid’s resident tough-lad, Chris Moyse, described as one of the most distinctive RPG experiences of 2021.

There’s nothing on this list that strikes me as something I need to download and play right away, but they’re all welcome additions to the library. Sackboy and Tails of Iron are both well-loved titles, while Meet Your Maker still ??needs to prove itself in the crucible of ??opinion.

Sackboy: The Big Adventure, Meet Your Maker, and Tails of Iron will be ?available? to all PlayStation Plus subscribers on April 4, 2023 until May 1.

A new thread to pull

Another PlayStation exclusive is making its way to the PC soon. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is getting a PC port on October 27.

Sumo Digital's thread-bound plat??former released for PlayStation 4 and PS5 in 2020, as part of the PS5 launch lineup. Now, it's getting the PC treatment, with some new features in tow.

//www.youtube.com/watch?v=MAaEqyE_Hfg

The new port of Sackboy will allow f?or 4K resolution with a target of 120 FPS, if you've got the hardware for it. The platformer will also s?upport a range of display ratios, including wider options like ultrawide, or 21:9.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure will also have NVIDIA DLSS2, or Deep Learning Super Sampling, for those with compatible graphics cards. Variable refresh rate ??support will also help with all that platforming.

While that's all for higher-end hardware, the PlayStation Blog also highlights lower-end options. It seems like owners with relatively older hardware might s??till be able to make this ga?me run, albeit at lower settings.

The next big adventure

Sackboy is getting some customization options too. A Big Adventure will fully support? the DualSense controller, so you can get thos??e haptics and dynamic trigger effects, same as PlayStation 5.

Mouse and keyboard will also be suppo??rte??d, in both gameplay and the user interface. Achievements are included too, as are cloud saves on both Steam and Epic Games Store.

This seems like a good grab for folks who dig co-op in particular, but maybe don't have the newest hardware. As per our review, Sackboy: A Big Adventure seems like a p??retty enjoyable co-op platformer to bla??st through with a friend or family member.

Sackboy also marks another PlayStation-exclusive game headed to PC. And considering how well these have been going, like with Marvel's Spider-Man and God of War, I'd hope to see more continue making their way over.

Sackboy banana is a go

Playing LittleBigPlanet when it came out was a treat. The playerbase was flowing, level creations actually got some love, and the game itself was pretty fun, especially with a group. I'm glad that the series got at least three main entries and some spinoffs, but I'd really like to see it continued proper again on the PS5. While I muse over whether or not that'll actually happen, we have Sackboy: A Big Adventure now. And the Sackboy Banana costume.

It's actually called the "Sacknana," and it's a fan favorite outfit from the original series: the PSP game specifically. You can actually grab it for free now as of August 20 in Sackboy: A Big Adventure, as one of the many in-game costume options. Oh, and it comes with a dance emote, too! Again, people are really taking to this banana costume, wh?ich became a meme in its own right when it was originally released.

I didn't think I'd return to this game as m?uch as I have since the launch of the PS5, but here we are. Simple things like tiny DLC costumes were always a motivator for returning to the original trilogy, and now history repeats itself.

Considering some levels are co-op-only, that's a big deal

Will I make it to the end of the year without buying Sackboy: A Big Adventure? I'm not sure I can wait for a sale as originally? planned. It seems like to??o jolly of a time for me to miss this during the holiday break.

Helping resolve my on-the-fence-ness, with today's update, Sackboy h??as online multiplayer suppor??t and save-file transferring between the PS4 and PS5 versions (look for an option in the Extras menu).

That's important! Ten of the levels are specifically co-op only, and while ??there's already local multiplayer in this game (for all types of levels), that's obviously not going to work for everyone in all situations. If you ever hop online with friends or strangers, "your progress will be carried over to your local game."

Another cool thing I always appreciate: online multiplayer is cross-gen, and that should help fill the ranks. I imagine plenty of people got Sackboy on PS5 despite having only?? one ?DualSense controller.

Astro's Playroom seriously put me in a ??platformer mood, so it's just a matter of time.

Sack lunch bunch

Oh hey, didn't notice you there: I was too busy picking up my Sackboy: A Big Adventure co-op partner (read: my wife) and throwing her i??nto the abyss.

How did everything go after that was all said and done? Pretty good actu?ally!

Sackboy: A Big Adventure review

Sackboy: A Big Adventure (PS4, PS5 [reviewed])
Developer: Sumo Digital
Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment
Released: November 12, 2020
MSRP: $59.99

The last time we checked into A Big Adventure I was enjoying myself, and not much has changed since then. We're entering a new renaissance of sorts of cute mascot platformers, with tons of games like Lucky's Tale entering the fray. Heck, Crash Bandicoot even came back??. If you have an idea for a cute character, now is the time to ??strike.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure breathes new life into the world of LittleBigPlanet in an endearing and non-cloyi??ng way. There's more of a narrative now, as Sackboy squares off against the evil Vex: who is hell-bent on subjugating Sackboy's kin and twisting the adorable sackworld into his own vision. Vex doesn't jus??t come at the start and leave until the end either, as he makes his presence known throughout.

The campaign also introduces you to some great supporting characters, a few of which try to add a little allure and lore to the universe that you may have come to love over the past decade-plus. Skippable level intros are the best, as they allow you to get as little or as much as you want out of the narrative. If y??????????????????????????ou wan??t everyone to shut up and just grab some collectibles, you can do that.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is what I'd classify as a "chill platformer": so, perfect for 2020. In one level, you race along a level that's tweaked to trigger bounces and bumps to the tune of Bruno Mars' "Uptown Funk" (my immediate reaction: an audible "WHAT?!"). A few stages later you'll come across the queen of the monkeys, who won't stop talking about "banana exports." LittleBigPlanet has always been sort of weird, but Big Adventure takes that to the next level.

Themes range from "ah that was cute" to the exciting musical journeys above, but at no point does the game feel like a chore. The physics, like most LBP joints, might take some getting used to. Mechanical??ly, the platforming is up to snuff; just responsive enough to not being annoying. You can jump, punch, roll, and grab: the latter of which is responsible for quite a few interactions that dictate how successfully you pull off a lot of sections.

Sometimes the physics system doesn't work exactly how you want it to, especially when it comes to swift trajectories when jumping off of a moving object. Usually it?? just results in a groan and a quick checkpoint restart. Sometimes, especially when it comes to the more coveted secrets, the floatiness can get infuriating.

What is annoyi?ng is the level gating, which asks players to earn a certain number of orbs (a collectible) from stages before they can "finish" a map. It'??s not a deal-breaker per se, but if you're rushing through (or genuinely can't find a few orbs), you might need to go back to a previous stage. I've played through games where this concept was egregious and clearly designed to pad out a campaign, and this isn't it.

That campaign is all you're getting, by the way, as Sackboy: A Big Adventure doesn't have a creation tool like a proper LittleBigPlanet title. A commenter in our review-in-progress mentioned that they didn't even touch the creation tools in the past and favored the main stor????????????????????????????yline: a sentiment I can get down with after seeing how rewarding this game can be. There's a lot to scour for here, so you'll be busy for a while if you go for a 100% rating.

Bring your family and friends into your Sackboy: A Big Adventure playthrough and have a blast. Or play by yourself. It doesn't really matter, a??s Sumo Digital has once again ??tapped into the essence of what makes this series so special. It's innocent, it's fun, and it feels unique. We need more games like it, even if they don't push the genre forward...which is by no means a requirement.

Sack lunch

LittleBigPlanet has a really special place in my heart for many reasons, but chiefly, it was one of the first games that my wife and I were excited for as a couple. When we were dating we'd introduce each other to all sorts of oddities and new experiences, but when that first LBP preview hit in a magazine we picked up, it was something we coul??d share together.

Over the last 12 years, somehow this underdog is still alive after ?being bounced around multiple developers and subject to several spinoffs. Now it's back, in adventure form: and we're playing it together?? once again.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Sackboy: A Big Adventure (PS4, PS5 [reviewed])
Developer: Sumo Digital

Released: November 12, 2020
MSRP: $59.99

This is a pure platformer without a creati?on mode: I feel like I need to say that upfront.

Even with that proviso, I think I'm okay with recommending A Big Adventure at this point, several worlds in. Sumo Digital was able to bottle the same whimsical magic that it did in LittleBigPlanet 3, crafting stages that will basically force you to smile. Stages are cohesive, offering up new concepts at a respectable pace, while keeping the focus on hidden zones and collectibles. If you rush through any given Sackboy stage you won't have too many problems, but finding everything they have to offer requires a set of discerning eyes. It's very much like some Mario games in that way??, which ??is a compliment of the highest honor.

Your little Sackboy avatars can do a little Yoshi-style extra hop after jumping, whack things, mash the Circle button to roll, and grab onto objects (or each other). While more tools become available as the campaign progresses, your core kit is jumping and punching. It absolutely works for me. The DualSense functionality isn't quite as impressive as Astro's Playroom (which might become a trend), but it is very cute and adds a tad to the festivities, mostly by way of sou??nds via the controller's built-in ??speaker.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure also has those classic multiplayer challenges, as well as secret levels, a shop to buy more outfits (you can earn pieces in levels too, like always), and bonus stages. The "walkabout world map" helps ensure that this feels a tad more robust than a typical LittleBigPlanet title. Speaking of multiplayer, I was able to test out both solo and two-player co-op, but online pl?ay is "coming later this year," so keep that in mind.

It's going to suit a certain kind of audience. After you've played your explosive next-gen games, I can see a family sitting down and enjoying Big Adventure together as they slowly pour through every level and try to find the cutest costumes. It's not flashy,? but it's a welcome addition to the PS5's lineup.

I came in expecting an adorable serviceable platformer and that's just what I got here. Sumo Digital generally does good work, so I'm excited to see what's next in Sackboy: A Big Adventure. Stay tuned for our full review.

Sumo Digital's co-op platformer could slip through the cracks

I'm not about to argue that any of us should prioritize getting Sackboy: A Big Adventure over other PlayStation 5 launch games like Demon's Souls or Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but you kn?ow what? It looks better every time I see it. This latest trailer – a story spotlight – fills me with feel-good vibes.

Squaring everything away for local multiplayer on PS5 will be a pricey proposition – you would need a ($70) DualSense for everyone since DualShock 4 controllers won't support PS5 games – but there is a silver lining. Sackboy: A Big Adventure is also playable on PS4 as a $60 cross-gen release.

Unlike Horizon Forbidden West or even Miles Morales, I'm not too worried about any potential performance concessions with the PS4 version of Sackboy. (I hope I d???on't regret that optimism.) For those of us with way too many DualShock 4s, it just makes sense to go that route for couch co-op.

Save data for Sackboy will transfer from PS4 to PS5 once an update rolls out "shortly after the release of the game," according to Sony. This process "will vary ??title by title for cross-generational games."

The free PS5 pack-in Astro's Playroom will be a nice warmup for whenever I get around to playing Sackboy, but I get the distinct feeling that most of us? will skip this at launch and circle?? back later.

Let's use t??he buddy system: I'll remind you if you remind me – preferably onc??e there's a deal.

Ghost of Tsushima, Death Stranding, and more

Sony says that Sackboy has more than 60 costumes to discover, providing all sorts of options for customization and snazzy d?ress. But, you'll need to shell out an extra $20 to outfit Sackboy in some of Sony's more iconic looks.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure's digital deluxe edition comes with a handful of pack-in goodies but none are more alluring than costumes for some recent high-profile PS4 exclusives. Buying the $80 extra-good edition comes with skins for Ghost of Tsushima's Jin, Death Stranding's Sam Porter Bridges, Detroit: Become Human's Connor, and Days Gone's Deacon St. John.

That's right -- if yo?u think Sackboy should have awful facial hair, you can Hideo Kojima-fye him.

That's just part of the dig?ital deluxe edition package. Here's everything the $80 version comes with:

  • Digital art book
  • Digital soundtrack
  • 4 Sackboy costumes listed above
  • 4 Sackboy emotes based on each PlayStation icon mentioned above
  • 20 Sackboy avatars wearing different costumes

There's a ??physical option too, but only if you're not moving along to next-gen. A special edition is only available on PS4, and it comes with all the stuff listed above and this plushie:

The Sackboy PS4 special edition runs $90 and can be pre-ordered now. It's worth noting that Sackboy has a free upgrade from PS4 to PS5, so picking up the special edition doesn't lock you out of a PS5 version of the game. In fact, if you're interested in the digital deluxe edition, it's probably worth t??he extra $10 to get a plushie out of it.

A few games are still set for PS4

Sony is obviously in the position of trying to sell new consoles to as many people as possible. However, when the PlayStation 5 launches on November 12 (pricing and release date plans are outlined here), Sony's not requiring that you own the new?? hardware to play some of the most highly-anticipated games.

As part of a very beefy press release Sony sent immediately following this afternoon's PS5 stream, it's revealed that three games are coming to PlayStation 4 even though it wasn't necessarily expected. Horizon Forbidden West, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and Sackboy A Big Adventure will all hit PS4 too when they launch.

Two of these will also serve as PS5 launch games. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Sackboy both release on November 12 on new- and last-gen consoles. As part of all the Spider-Man details we got today, it seems as though Miles Morales has cross-buy functionality between the PS4 and PS5 versions. So, anyone who isn't all-in on a PS5 right away can buy Miles Morales, play it? on PS4, and t??hen eventually enjoy all the enhancements down the road a bit when they end up nabbing a PS5.

Horizon is a bit more of an oddball case. Horizon Forbidden West won't launch until sometime in 2021. Still, it'll have a PS4 version even though Sony will be squarely focused on PS5 by then. Maybe this is a ?response to Xbox's policy that all its first-pa?rty games are cross-generational for the first few years? Whatever the logic, it's more good news for the non-early adopters.

Don't sack him off

Sackboy is back. As revealed in today's PS5: The Future of Gaming presentation, Sumo Digital is working on a 3D platformer starring LittleBigPlanet's homespun hero, Sackboy.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure will see the little knitted fella run, jump, swing, glide, and climb his way through huge levels, decorated and realised in the classic craftwork style of LittleBigPlanet. This fun-looki??ng platformer will feature single and multiplayer modes.

Sackboy: A Big Adventure is currently in development for PS5.
